An Important Contract

House And Home (A New Day) - DM/Al
Monday April 13th, 2009 8:46:50 PM

Mask day comes with great celebration. For many of the Crimson Shields the greatest thing about it is the knowledge that Jonas will not retain the power of the Underlord in the secret level of Floating City down below.

Mask day passes and the business of Floating City continues on across each and every level of the Big Float. The Shields wake in their digs on Merchant Level. The newcomers to the two large properties note that the buildings show signs of not being fully moved into yet. In truth, the Crimson Shields have been so busy as of late, that they've scarce had time for things like moving in and decorating.

At the break of fast, Belkior reckons that he has two more days remaining until he finishes his Staff of Healing. At present, his work space is the dining room table. Mac prepares to leave for the forge that the Guard smithy has allowed him to use down on Barracks level, when his eye falls on the remains of a stable on the western property. With a little work, the run down stable might be turned into a smithy. From it's size, it may even house other work spaces as well. All that would have to be done would be to speak with Syr and find out whether Shield Construction could put in some work on their own home.

Wynn Brightsong remains silent. Since that second time before the elections he has heard nothing more from Xenia.

The only one not currently in residence on the Shield properties is Florin Jadanth. Happily married, he lives apart with his new wife and adopted daughter.

OoC: The properties owned by the Crimson Shields are here.

The only ones who have described their rooms are Wynn and Xenia. The have a place on the second floor of the East building, toward the back, with a balcony overlooking the garden and the parkland beyond the fence. Feel free to claim and describe your own room and/or to create other rooms or structures on either of the two properties.

Also, Florin, I need to know where you live, with Ivy and Jella, please.

Bonus XP: To the first one who comes up with a good jpg diagram of the properties with everything on it.

(OOC:Florin had a placed rented on the fence level of the Float when the Float almost got tipped over. If possible he will stick with that seeing as how the building I would guess would be fixed by now and all.)

Florin plans to meet up with the other Shield's today and see what is new, also hitting the GG if needed since it is one of the best places for any events going on in the Wold. (This of course takeing for granted that nothing happens to stop him before hand.)

When he meets up with Syr he smiles, "Morning Syr. I was thinking about things. I've got some skill with armor makeing and Mac has some skill with weapon smithing. How much would it cost you think to have a extra room added on to my home for smithing?"

(Mac: I'm thinking of haveing Florin see how much the lbs of admantine would cost to construct a admantine weapon. Would Mac beable to handle such a matter in his off time?)

(Syr: I'm haveing Florin head into the CC now but could you confirm the money the group will be getting a piece?)

Brahmah, Captain of the Chosen of Domi (AC 27, Hps 126)
Monday April 13th, 2009 10:54:35 PM

Not having been told he can stay with the CS in their residence, Brahmah is staying in the WLA barracks in the city. During these times, he's doing work for the WLA.

Belkior (AC 25 (27 vs. evil); HP 89/91) - Magic Circle vs. Evil, Purifying Aura, Haste
Monday April 13th, 2009 11:02:07 PM

The halfling cleric putters around on the ground floor of the house, going back and forth between the common area and the small chamber that he is considering claiming as his own. It's a simple space and far too small for the 'taurs that have recently joined Belkior's companions. Not to mention, it opens onto the garden behind the western building which gives him the ability to meditate outside when the mood takes him.

Of course, moving into the room would be very simple since Belkior has followed the rules of the priesthood of Alemi to the best of his ability. Actually moving would require the permission of the Chief Priest but that should only be a formality. Once permission has been granted, the Paragon can move his meagre belongings relatively easily.

Would someone be so kind as to formally invite Brahmah to take up residence at on the Shield properties? Not that he has to accept, mind you. Nor do you have to invite him if you don't want to. But, at least, then, he will have the option.

Thanks.

In amongst various conversations with a number of people, Florin mentions the possibility of constructing an adamantine weapon, and particularly its weight, cost and time. He replies, "Those are some fine questions. We can ignore the rarity of the metal and plough straight into the time factor. Making the basic weapon should only take a week or two - three at most, depending on the weapon of choice - Easily done, happy to help. Making it Masterwork quality will take me another three to (call it) six months - hopefully that would average out around four months. OOC: 12.5 to 24.4 weeks by my calculations, with successful craft checks every week. I could push to make it quicker, maybe as quick as two months, but that would risk not just delays, but potentially having to purchase more materials to replace fouled stock. There are way to mitigate those risks to an extent, but they aren't cost effective, like permanently and/or temporarily increasing my mental acuity for all my working hours every day until I'm done, or maybe a ring that works for Crafts (or a Craft) the way an Improved Ring of Jumping does for leaping. I can see I am not instilling you with confidence, but I have been honest, and I expect that counts for more."

Mac pauses for a moment to refocus his thoughts before continuing, "I would be honoured to make it, but I feel you need the services of a more masterful weaponsmith than myself, and certainly one who can dedicate himself wholly to the task - as my grandfather would have. Still might, actually, but I am a long way from home, and news from there is scarce..." another pause as memories stir. "That or purchasing one someone has already made. I mean, no waiting."

Syr Ac 35/34 HP 154  d20+28=43 ; d20+28=48 ;
Tuesday April 14th, 2009 5:14:25 PM

Nodding to Florin he says, "Yup, 19528.71 and that is with that same amount for Belk to spend on his wands and staff for the group's benefit."

As the two minotaurs turn to leave, he grabs Brahmah by the arm, "Woah there big guy, When I said that you could hang with us, (April 1st) I meant it. Just find a room big enough to hold you and drop your bags. Of course, you won't find any beds big enough but we have plenty of space." Turning serious he cranes his neck to stare into the minotaur's eyes, "I'll be frank, my only concern is that the WLA's goals might not align with the Shields'. What happens then? I wouldn't want to lose our big bookends in a time of need." He snorts, "We already have a sorceror whose untampered brain is more important than the common good." Adding an aside, "Sorry Theo, but it's true." Shrugging he gazes up hard, "You don't have to answer, and hopefully, we'll never cross that bridge."

With lightning quickness, he elf's mood shifts again, "Anyway, on to better things. The last two weeks and maybe some of my stumpin' have really helped out the construction business. We made more now than in the previous 8." He distributes 16 platinum pieces and 4 golds to each partner saving Mac for last. "Here ya go! I can probably clear up some confusion. Back when we were helping out Prionel, I made some contacts with the elves. We use that to get building supplies and get it shipped to our warehouse down on the fence level. It's right across the street from the Fish House, next to the docks...." he pauses for a breath, "Once the city was devastated from those vines, we opened up our construction business on a contract basis. No harm in helping rebuild the city and making a small profit in the process. We try to be fair to all while providing a quality construction. It's really not me, I do a little on the front end but ultimately, Dotta is our mastermind. I'll have to introduce you someday." (OOC: Syr's Leadership feat in case you didn't figure it out)

The bard remains closetted in the room he had shared ever so briefly with Xenia. Those that peek in will find him alternately gazing out the open balcony doors and writing in his journal. Several empty wine bottles litter the floor beside the makeshift desk.

Brahmah, Captain of the Chosen of Domi (AC 27, Hps 126)
Tuesday April 14th, 2009 7:50:49 PM

"Thank you Syr. I will take you up that offer I think. But keep in mind that my loyalties were with the WLA long before they were and are with the Shields." He smiles. "Should the WLA's missions some how clash with the Shields, I will stay clear of both."

Goings and Comings - DM/Al
Tuesday April 14th, 2009 9:31:03 PM

Days pass with Wynn in self imposed exile, shut in the room in which he and Xenia had spent so little time. Such is the life of adventurers, though. Always on the move, with so little time for one's self. He spends the time with is journal, and with numerous bottles of wine.

After two more days, Belkior completes his Staff of Healing, the "Stick" that Brahmah had admired days before. Florin comes up from his home on Fence Level to discuss the addition of a smithy to the home he keeps with his wife Ivy. While Mac explains the economics of metalworking to the paladin, Syr considers the question of the extra construction.

The bulk of the cost would come from the fine brickwork for the forge. Aside from that, there isn't much to putting up a lean to enclose the space. The work might cost some four hundred and fifty gold pieces and take a week to two weeks to complete. Unless, the paladin had something more elaborate in mind.

Syr button-holes Brahmah and renews his initiation to the two new minotaurs to choose rooms and consider the Shield properties their home. And so, with all of the Shields now in residence, Syr settles down to talk business. But, wait. One is missing. Where's that crazy wizard Theodore? The Shields find a note in his room. In a quick barely legible scrawl, Theo speaks of being off in search of a long lost manuscript, the Quindabble Holograph. He adds that he has no idea how long the search may take, possibly years.

That settled, Syr finally settles in with the Shields for a shareholders meeting of sorts. Business has been good, and he distributes 164 gold to each of the five Shields in attendance.

*rap*rap*rap*

A knock sounds at the door. A look out the window reveals a lone man standing on the front stoop. His clothing has an expensive look about them, but, still, they remain simple and utilitarian. He wears glasses upon his large bony nose. And, he carries a large folio under one arm bound in string.

+++++++++++++++++++++

OoC: Unfortunately, it looks like Shegger/Theo won't be with us any longer. Cayzle and I received an email from him, and apparently his new job is putting the demands upon him. He will be missed. And, also unfortunately, this means you now have extremely limited Arcane support.

(OOC:Al&Cayzle, My charactershee shall be completely update once my CC transaction is finished. Well comepleted except for exp. I hope this is ok.)

Florin speaks to Syr more and nods to him, "I should beable to make a down or full payment depending and then the company can get to work once they have time."

Florin listens to Mac also and thinks, "I will wait for now and ask again later then. I do not mind waiting for you to take your time at it but if it would be best then I'll buy the weapon pre-made. I was thinking of a war hammer or such if that helps any."

When the knock comes Florin glances towards the door and then to Syr, figureing he'll allow Syr to get the door before speaking to Syr once more in a lower voice, "I'm going to go up and check on the bard, which room is his?"

When Florin finds out he heads to Wynn's room and knocks lightly before comeing in, "Wynn?" Looking around he shakes his head, "I can only imagine what your going through Wynn but you need to try and cheer up some. What would Xenia think seeing you like this? This isn't you and you know that you and Xenia share a bond much stronger then the space you are apart now." Florin moves up to lay a hand on Wynn's shoulder inless he shoves it away or such, "The Shield's need you also, we are like a family and we need you to have our back as you need us. I cared for Xenia too before you joined but it wasn't meant to be, you two are meant to be and those star crossed like yourselves can never be seperated."

Florin moves to the door now and speaks once more, "I'm not sure but I think a job may of arrived for the group. I hope you'll join us."

Belkior
Tuesday April 14th, 2009 11:26:34 PM

The halfling cleric looks up when he hears the knock at the front door. After allowing the larger members of the Shields to move, Belkior falls into place behind them and peers between the legs of the minotaurs. While he waits for one of the others to answer the door, Belkior gently holds the staff that he has recently created. Unlike some crafted by others, the Paragon of Alemi has tried to create a utilitarian tool fit for both healing and adventuring.

Wynn acknowledges the paladin's kind words. "I got another message...she's alright...not sure where, but she's alright. "

He accompanies Florin down the stairs, or at least as far down the stairs as one can get with two hulking minotaurs blocking the passageway. From two or three steps up he looks over the top of the crowd. "We'll don't leave him standing on the mat, invite him in and lets see what this is all about!"

The Man from the Office of the Overlord - DM/Al
Wednesday April 15th, 2009 9:11:35 PM

"Thank you. Thank you." The man steps over the threshold. "My name is Phileas Bankable and I represent the Office of the Overlord." The human male is thin, though nearly as tall as Florin, with the tight shoulders common of those who work long hours stooped over quill and ledger. As he removes the cap from his head, one of those velvet caps fashionable these days on Gold Level, he reveals a head of hair thinning from the forehead back.

"The Office of the Overlord," the man speaks the four words as though speaking of a person, a high functionary of some sort. "The Office of the Overlord comes to you with a proposal. Is there somewhere we might all sit?" When the group is settled around the dinning room table, Phileas Bankable, the man from the Office of the Overlord, continues.

"Floating City," he says, "appears to many as a city of contradictions. We have here the pinnacle of culture and technical sophistication, rivaling if not surpassing Plateau City, and yet we are isolated from the outside Wold. Surrounded as we are by the Crying Woods, we have no farms, few forests, no mines, and yet we build, we flourish, we feed our people. How do we do this? How is this miracle accomplished? Through the careful protection and husbandry of what resources we do have. This is the job of the Office of the Overlord, and the Office of the Overlord has been the key to the success of Floating City."

"I tell you this because the proposal that I'm about to make may raise many questions, and I'd like you to give our proposal the deepest of thought before coming to any decisions. The proposal concerns your company, Shield Construction. We would like to contract with Shield Construction for exclusive work upon the structures of Floating City. In exchange for a contract of exclusivity, we are willing to pay a monthly stipend of five thousand gold pieces per month."

"Yes, I know, that is a great deal of gold, but we feel it is money well spent for a pledge by you that you will take no other contracts save ours. From this five thousand gold pieces per month, you will pay all of your labor and operating costs. Materials, however, will be provided for you and will be paid for the by the Office of the Overlord."

"There are further conditions of this contract, and you may find some of them ... rather unusual, but before I move on to those, I'll ask if you have questions about anything so far?"

Belkior
Wednesday April 15th, 2009 10:05:12 PM

The halfling cleric moves with the other Shields into the dining room, staying towards the back of the group. Once the larger people are seated, Belkior climbs up onto the high stool that he uses to sit at this table with his companions so that he is somewhat closer to their height.

The Paragon listens intently to the proposition from Phileas Bankable. When the Overlord's representative asks for a commitment, Belkior cautiously waits for Syr and the others who have been more active in the operation of the construction to make the first move or statement.

Florin Jadenth
Wednesday April 15th, 2009 10:45:55 PM

Florin listens to what is said and simply looks to Syr and speaks to him, "I hate to say it Syr but I think this decision lays more with you then most. I might of bought into the company but I don't like the idea of makeing any decisions on anything of that nature." Florin smiles abit, he knows this probably puts Syr on the spot but Syr asks if Florin wanted to buy in and to him that means the company is mostly Syr's.

Syr Ac 35/34 HP 154
Thursday April 16th, 2009 3:33:03 AM

Looking around the group, the elf thinks their numbers are diminished but the table still seems too small with the minotaurs added. Syr's ears perk up at the mention of the construction business. "Phileas, I'm Syr and I deal with the business more than most, however, everyone here has a say in it. Did Alicia sign off on this? Also, from a contractual standpoint, I'm assuming the stipend is paid in advance?"

His brow furrowed in thought, "The only other initial concern is the size of this. I'm not the expert on this, Dotta is, but the city is HUGE. Shield Construction wouldn't be able to handle the maintenance of the Float without hiring many more people I would think. Are you making similar offers to others or are we expected to increase our workforce?"

He looks at the others wondering what their thoughts are on the subject.

Mac
Thursday April 16th, 2009 5:15:15 PM

Mac watches as listens to the offer and the comments. He doesn't say much, but he is clearly intrigued.

OOC: Brahmah, I'm assuming the 164gp was the last division of dividends before Mac invested, so Mac hasn't (shouldn't have) received it either. Mac's money hadn't had a chance to start working yet, so I haven't recorded this money on his CS.

OOC: Speaking of Character Sheets, I'm just this stretch in the Catacombs and XP away from being finished.

The Main Condition - DM/Al
Thursday April 16th, 2009 9:19:26 PM

"Ahh. Syrdeth Redbow. Your signature is on the tax records." The man looks to the other Shields, the Shields, who listen, but, for the most part, remain quiet. "To answer your questions in the order that you have asked them, no, of course the Overlord herself has not personally authorized your particular contract. She couldn't possibly tend to all of the thousands of business decisions made every day within the governmental machine of the Floating City. But she has approved the rebuilding effort, and she has approved our recruitment of private firms to aid in the rebuilding."

"Which, I suppose, answers your second question. No, you are not the sole company that we have contracted for rebuilding. You will be one among many. But, you, unlike the others, are uniquely suited to our purposes."

"And, no again. Actually, in the contract as written, payment of the monthly stipend is to be paid at the end of each month, rather than in advance. But ... though I really shouldn't be telling you this ... " With a secret smile on his face he leans in toward the Crimson Shields. " ... advanced payment is one of the points of contract that remains negotiable." Phileas Bankable gives a snork of amusement as though having just shared an amusing joke. Then the bookish smile fades. "Oh. I'm sorry. Those answers weren't exactly in the order you asked them, were they?"

"At any rate, where was I? Oh yes. All building materials will be provided for you by the Office of the Overlord. You will use *these* building materials for your contracted construction and only *these* building materials. You will also keep a strict accounting of these materials down to the slightest scrap. All unused materials will be returned to the Office of the Overlord for disposal. Your inventory will be reviewed monthly, with the possibility of surprise inspections mid month as well. All materials *must* be accounted for."

"This point, I'm afraid, is non-negotiable, and it's why we at the Office of the Overlord find you so uniquely qualified to care for our needs. Unlike other companies engaged in construction, you actually have the prowess, the muscle, so to speak, to protect our inventory of building materials."

Then Phileas Bankable looks up from beneath his spectacles as though expecting further questions.

The bard listens to all of the answers provided and tries to determine just how genuine this Phileas Bankable is. [Sense Motive=16].

"And just what is so special about these materials you intend us to use, that we may use no other, and that they must be so protected?" Wynn winces as he finishes the question, for it came out much more demanding than intended [Diplomacy=15; nat 1].

The halfling cleric notices the emphasis and importance that Phineas Bankable is placing upon the building materials. Belkior is about to ask when Wynn blurts out the question.

"What ... ahh ... he said it better," Belkior half-heartedly mumbles. After pausing for moment, the Paragon continues with a different question.
Diplomacy = 8

"What, exactly ... or, more likely, who ... would we be protecting these building materials from?"

Still, Belkior has never particularly liked the self-important bureaucrats that plague even the priesthood of Alemi. This Phineas Bankable does seem to warrant observation.
Sense Motive = 18

Florin Jadenth
Thursday April 16th, 2009 11:32:57 PM

Florin listens to what is said and waits as he leans back in his chair some, wondering what Syr will decide mainly, "Depending on what Syr decided I will back what he decided." He smiles and nods to Syr, knowing that once again isn't much help but will help out none the less on what he decided. So far the info sounds ok he guesses, meaning the group did back the Overlord and if the Overlord is actually behind this in away as it were then it should be on the level.

"So, we'd be covering our own set up costs, assuming what you are looking for is a little more than Shield Construction have done before? Tools, other equipment, and the like." After a moments pause he turns to look Phileas directly in the eye and asks, "Just how much competition are you looking to see between the contracted companies?"

The elf nods along as the others seem to pick up nuances from the accountant that he didn't.

Syr pauses as if in thought. His eyes drift off to the left and he seems to be whispering numbers. With a sudden refocusing he addresses Phileas, "Those are all good questions. and they weigh in more than most but really what's in it for us? These last two weeks have been good for business and if that holds up, we'll fall just 500 gp short of what you are offering. You words seem to imply there is more risk involved than what we currently have for what? A small stipend? The Shields are accustomed to the risk but is our crew? Is there any type of additional non-monetary compensation?"

(OOC: For those that don't know, Syr invested 10k so his share is 10 times as much with the current set up. Not that I'm opposed to changing it for the group.)

Secrets of the City - DM/Al
Friday April 17th, 2009 9:52:34 PM

Wynn and Belkior take the opportunity provided by Syr and Florin to observe the emissary of from the Office of the Overlord as the man is engaged in the discussion over the contract offer. Neither the bard nor the priest of Alemi detect anything particularly amiss. However, Phileas Bankable, the emissary of the Office of the Overlord, does appear to notice the extra added scrutiny that he has drawn from the pair.

The man pauses, observing the Crimson Shields, much in the way that they had just observed him. He takes in the mood of the adventurers as well as their apparent intentions, then the smallest of smiles touches his thin lips, and all appearance of careless bureaucratic arrogance, all trace of foolishness falls away from his face. In its place is a business-like competence.

"Those are fair questions," he replies. "First, we will not require you to take on jobs that you are not equipped to handle at the moment," he says to Mac. "The Office of the Overlord is dedicated to the well-being of the city. We would not have you over extend yourselves and do a poor job. That is in the interest of no one. Jobs will be offered in lots designed by our engineers to be within your power to be completed well and correctly."

"There will be no competition for jobs. There is plenty of work to go around. Truth be told, there are fewer public companies in Floating City that we can trust with these jobs than we would like. We don't pay you such sums of gold for nothing."

"As to your questions ... " Phileas Bankable turns to Bekior and Wynn. "Do you remember when I spoke of the contradictions that frame Floating City? The sophistication amidst the lack of resources? Well, the materials that you will receive represent the greatest resource that the City has. The represent the reason behind our prosperity. These materials are the product of years of research, and yet they are only the beginning. They're all that we've been able to reproduce. These beams these glues, the stone and mortar, are such simple things, and yet they have taken us countless hours of research to learn their secret."

"The materials that you will use, that you will guard, and that you will account for every scrap of, have been reproduced from Teucri design."

The man from the Office of the Overlord pauses to let the implications sink in. Then he continues. "The materials are stronger and hold together better than natural wood and stone. We aren't sure why, but, at least we've learned to recreate it. This Teucri material is the reason much of the city survived the attack of the Crying Woods, and we are working to ensure that more and more of Floating City is rebuilt from this material too."

"It will not be the materials themselves that you protect, though. What you will be protecting is the secret of its manufacture, the secrets of the Teucri. All of our years of research will have been for nothing if someone else, gods forbid, the Star Mages or some other such get hold of a sample and figure the knack of its creation. If that happens, our advantage is gone. Our sages and wizards think they've cracked some of the key concepts behind the Teucri genius, and in some way those ideas are built into this material. Once the material is built into the structure of the city, it is hard to dislodge, but until then, they must be protected from theft."

The emissary from the Office of the Overlord then turns to Syr with the look of a trained and calculating negotiator. "There is the service to your City," he replies. "But, then again, I don't think that's what you have in mind. Let me assure you, though, that we have never had any problems with attacks on work crews. With the City Guard on duty that has simply never been a problem. Theft is more our concern."

"But, you mentioned additional non-monetary compensation. What did you have in mind?"

OoC Note: I will not apply the 1/20 - Auto Failure/Success rules to Skill checks in this game. Even if you roll a natural 1 your score stands as it is, on the merits of its value alone.

Sunday April 19th, 2009 9:57:21 PM

The halfling cleric looks over at the bureaucrat, wondering exactly how much of the foppish behaviour is real and how much is an act. Belkior still has a question, though.

"You've explained the what ... that we're going to be using these special materials. And you've mentioned that there is a possibility that some unknown others may attempt to steal the materials and the secret of manufacturing them. But you haven't said anything about who you suspect may try to steal these things."

"Excuse me if I'm being too direct but, please understand, that we may need to make some specific preparations."

Monday April 20th, 2009 7:55:24 AM

The bard considers all he has heard and now understands why the Overlord has foregone the normal processes of sealed bids for city construction projects, afterall, the lowest bidders may not even be prepared to work with such exotic materials, let alone be trustworthy enough to keep them secure. Nevertheless, he cannot help but feel a bit guilty that in helping the Overlord during the election that he has somehow invited this patronage. This is a decision for Syr...

Politics and intrigue were always Brahmah weak point. The Chosen often had the taurs that could handle it, and this minotaur was happy this group had them too. He'll ask questions later.

The name Teruci seems to bring up a thought he can't quite grasp. He mumbles to himself, "Hmph, maybe I should have taken Theo's route." shaking his head he continues staring at Phileas. "Okay, given the fact that we almost bring home the same amount you are paying us without the risk, what do you think is fair? Several other options come to mind. Didn't the Gold Dragons receive a house on the gold level at one point? Or you may have possibly noticed we are without an arcane member, can you come to some sort of arrangement there? We still would like to visit the orphanage without paying teleportation fees..."

"It's not that we aren't prepared to handle the task. It's just not something the Shields have normally taken on as a challenge."

Trust No One - DM/Al
Monday April 20th, 2009 9:30:48 PM

"Who do we suspect?" The man from the Office of the Overseer holds his hands open. "We suspect everyone. The Plateau City government, an and all of the Houses of Dirt City, the dragon-kin minions of Parnoth." He ticks them off on his fingers. "The gods know the Star Mages would love to obtain a sample to study. We've long suspected that the Mailed Fist has open offers to snatch samples should the any fall into their hands. They don't have the means to study the secrets, but they have enough connections to auction to the highest bidder. The Sanctity, bless their misguided notions of the free market, would steal a sample simply to sabotage us."

"Need I list more? Anyone and everyone who either has the means to tease the engineering secrets from our materials, or anyone who might be inclined to sell our secrets. Can you imagine how long that list might be?"

"I never said that the job would be easy. But, then again, I never said that it would be wildly difficult either. Despite our fears, we've had no attacks on any of our construction projects so far. We are an island city, now constantly on the move. Such a thing is difficult to enter unnoticed. And we're still in the infancy of our development. Though it's taken use years, we've still only been able to replicate the most basic of items. Wait till we crack the secret of weapons or mass teleportation. Then you'll see them come sniffing around."

"We could easily waive the teleportation fees to Plateau City for you," Phileas says, in answer to Syr's counter negotiations. "There are emblems of passage that our couriers carry to give them free priority use of the teleport facilities on Gold Level. As for the rest, I'm not quite sure I understand what you're asking. You'd like us to provide you with a house on Gold Level? You seem to have plenty of room here. And just what sort of arcane arrangements did you have in mind?"

His eyes turn from one Crimson Shield to the next, inviting more questions.

"Shall we give you more time to think on this? We do wish you would accept our contract. The Overlord has spoken well of you, and you're the only ones on our list of reliable companies who we can say this of. But we also understand that this may take some time to decide, and that you may wish to talk this over with each other. We place no unreasonable time limits on this offer. We at the Office of the Overlord like to think that we are in this for the long term. As long as the city needs us, we will need you. I could be back, say, tomorrow? The day after?" And he lifts an eyebrow as though to ask what you think.

Florin Jadenth
Monday April 20th, 2009 10:43:32 PM

Florin shakes his head some at the list of enemies they could have knocking at their door, Jonas, star mages, mailed fist, any and maybe every blackmarket thug...he almost half laughs as he can imagine all of this.

Florin glances towards Syr and begins to stand a moment, "Syr? talking is thirsty work, since the place is new show me to the kitchen so we can get everyone something to drink, ok?"

If Syr agrees and goes to the kitchen with Florin then he stops in the kitchen a moment and between helping get drinks he speaks to him, "Your going to need more guards on work sites or warehouses. I'm not saying not to takeup the offer but you could have every petty theif, blackmarket person and such come out of the wood work if it this important. Your also looking at they might try going after hostages to make handing over goods. This is a serious move and we're and more you are looking at serious players like Jonas getting involved. We seen the weight he once carried and who knows how many people he or the other orders mentioned could throw at us."

When the drinks are ready Florin will help get them back to the others. He haveing wanted to voice his concerned to Syr personally.

Belkior
Monday April 20th, 2009 11:25:04 PM

The halfling cleric frowns before nodding at the suggestion from the bureaucrat that he and his companions consider the proposition for a day. Belkior is silent, though, since he has said enough and the others have been more involved in the operation of the construction company. All along, his role has been to heal and protect the others.

The ranger finally pipes up. "Forgive me. When politics and such crop up, I tend to glaze over. Have you talked with the WLA about gathering more in this? Or are they also suspects?" He glares. "They are a source no one seems to draw on. You mentioned Parnoth. Have you contacted the Emerald City or those who run it?"

Florin continues to listen to what is said, not sure how Syr may react to his comments to him privately but hopeing still that he didn't just persuade Syr from helping since that wasn't what he was trying to do. Florin is just trying to look at all this from a tactical stand point.

Waiting on a Decision - DM/Al
Tuesday April 21st, 2009 9:31:17 PM

The eyes of the man from the Office of the Overlord follow Florin and Syr as they leave for the kitchen.

"I'm sorry ... you're Brahmah, aren't you?" His eyes then flick to Mac, linking the two minotaurs through the WLA badges both sport prominently on their clothing. "Brahmah, no offense to the League, but we prefer to handle security matters ourselves. And, no, the League is not under direct suspicion. The loose structure of their organization does not lend itself to taking on matters involving research."

"We watch them for rogue elements, but little more than that."

Again, Phileas Bankable turns to the kitchen. Then he turns back to the others and smile, waiting patiently for a decision, even if that decision might be to wait, discuss the options in greater privacy and leisure, and come to a final decision later.

He holds a hand up and begins checking off his fingers while staring at the bureaucrat. "First, free passage to Plateau City for ourselves and a predesignated 5 slots open to our work crew in case we need to hire specialists." He looks at the others before continuing. "Second, the city will pay for any losses suffered associated with the project, whether it be property or people. Third, the arcane help I mentioned earlier. Our warehouse couldn't hold out a thief let alone a determined group of thieves. We require magical assistance to fortify the property properly. Sorry that I'm not the expert in this so some of it is still to be determined." He looks over at Wynn and smiles sadly thinking of their favorite red head. Fourth, the city will pay the wages of any guards that we might have to hire. The 5k pays for a crew not a security force."

"Did I miss anything?"

Tentative Deal - DM/Al
Wednesday April 22nd, 2009 9:44:03 PM

The man from the Office of the Overlord turns again toward the kitchen door. Then Syr and Florin return. Phileas Bankable listens as Syr lays out his conditions. He draws a blank sheet of foolscap from his folio, and with a quill, notes each item in its own neat paragraph.

"These ... seem like reasonable precautions," he says, reviewing his own notes. "We'll have to explore the indemnification of your personnel, you understand. The city is perfectly willing to make good any losses that should rise from either the nature of our materials or the hazards of the particular job that you happen to be assigned. However, I hope you'll understand that we cannot guarantee recompense for mistakes that may arise from neglect or abuse of your own people. Not that we expect such, or we wouldn't have approached you. But we need to be clear where we stand from the beginning, don't we?"

"I'll return tomorrow with a contract that contains your additional provisions. At that time, we can arrange a time to move our materials into your warehouse. You'll need to clear around ten thousand square feet. I think that should accommodate things nicely. We'll arrange to have a few mages accompany the materials when they're delivered. They can go over your security arrangements."

From an inner pocket of his clothing, he produces a rectangular of stiff card stock upon which is embossed the seal of the Overlord of Floating City. Next to the seal, in a flowing, finely inked script are the words,

Phileas Bankable
Exchequer of Pleas, Grade 7
Manager, Contractual Fulfillment/Performance

"If you have any questions between now and then, just show this card at the Overlord's Palace, and someone will fetch me."

"I am so very glad that we'll be able to business together. Don't bother showing me out. I'll find my own way."

Then he is gone.

Syr blinks rapidly as Phileas escapes out the door wondering if he's been had. Syr looks at the others shyly, "I have no clue about magical protections, I just threw that in there on a whim. Anyone else want to take on that responsibility?"

The elf nods his thanks to Belkior, "Appreciate that. Speaking of which, it looks like we have some inventory to move. If it's okay with you guys, I'll sell it and take my share of Shield Construction down to the same level as you guys, making us all equal partners. It seems the fair thing to do, especially if ya'll are taking on the risk too."

The monk moves over to Brahmah and coughs politely whispering, "Not to put you on the spot but did you want to contribute 1k?"

Once all questions are resolved, Syr heads down to the office to talk to Dotta about the new arrangements.

Private Time - DM/Al
Thursday April 23rd, 2009 10:10:07 PM

The Crimson Shields are left to their own devices. Left to discuss the deal and to decide between themselves whether things are to their benefit or not, whether other provisions should be added or some removed, whether they even wish to be involved in this rebuilding project.

The decision is up to them.

The card remains on the table where Phileas Bankable left it, a means to contact the man from the Office of the Overlord, should the Shields wish to.

OoC: I will try my best to refrain from calling for Skill Checks of any kind. The application of Skill checks is completely up to you. I will evaluate them according to the rules, and, if there are any significant results to be had, you will have them.

The halfling cleric moves over to speak quietly with Syr. After an awkward moment, Belkior clears his throat and begins speaking.

"Syr, did you look after selling off the things that we took from the Ga'alians in the Underfloat? Would some of that money help with setting up and running the company?"

"I haven't put any money in before. I've been spending pretty much all that I have managed to scrape together on enchanting items. But that Tome should have provided enough cash for everyone to be pretty comfortable for a while. After I pay for the new staff, I should be able to chop in some things."

"As for magical protections, I can put some energy and prayers into doing that. But that would probably ony work if the work was pleasing to Alemi."

Florin glances towards Syr and shakes his head before speaking his mind, "I think you should leave the amount you put in there Syr. You might have more invested the any single one of us has but personally I do not mind. I personally was thinking of investing alittle more myself to be honest but the decision is up to you."
