As you continue moving through the hills, the villages and farmsteads become fewer and farther between. The road becomes rougher, and you see very few travellers.
It is therefore noteworthy when you overtake the stranger walking along the road ahead of you. He is simply dressed, but does not look like a farmer. There is a leather pack on his back, and a walking-stick in his hand. He looks like someone who has traveled many miles, and can readily travel many more.
"Greetings, travellers," he says calmly.

Zeph thoroughly enjoys talking with Hmark, Feyjarl, and Hmark about anything in general. His nose is generally stuck in his spellbook or in Dulcet's Thoery of Magic book, and he seems to be discussing things with his viper, Sliver. But he pokes his head up to smile at a comment, or make one of his own every now and then.
Zeph supremely fails his sense motive check (7) to not believe what Rollo said about wizards casting spells on gnomes, but Zeph does recognize the spell that Rollo casts (Spellcraft check =16) as Glibness, so Zeph searches through his book as to what that spell might do... nonetheless he is suspicious but believes Rollo wholeheartedly. "Well... research, yes, indeed. I shall do just that." Zeph says a bit nervously.
When the traveller shows up, Zeph will look him over thoroughly to see where the man may be from. (spot=13, grr)
After Hmark asks his question, Zeph will follow up with, "So... where ya heading?"

Hmark bobs his head in dutiful acceptance of Kiel's c'mon already wave. But as the stranger keeps pace, he's able to continue the banter.
"Out of the goodness of your hearts? Or are you, perhaps, hoping for a dragon hoard?" The brown haired lad breaks into a wide smile. "What, our kind hearts don't deserve a nice hoard?" he shoots back.
The smile fades as the stranger replies he's heard of no dragons hereabouts. "Well, we're here," he says. "So we might as well help with something. Have you heard of any other critter hereabouts?"
and then waits, hoping beyond hope the fellow might come right out and say 'wyvern'. [bluff 11]
Zeph AC19 HP37/37 HeroesLoot3 Thursday April 16th, 2009 10:57:24 PM
Zeph smiles at the ruse a bit. Why don't we just tell him we are hunting a wyvern? Well... on second thought, maybe he could be working for someone. Don't want to run into someone who is an agent of the same people Ruglio's group was. We better just keep him talking to avoid looking suspicious. Maybe we should change the subject? Zeph thinks to himself
"Well, riches and adventure may be why we are all together, but we each adventure to our own ends. Some may be here for monetary gains alone, while others may be trying to make their families happy, while still others might be looking to right wrongs of the past.... But yeah, any idea of where any dangerous monsters might be? Also, with all your questions, why don't you tell us where you are from, sir." Zeph says, with open honesty.
At the last remark, Sliver slides out from under Zeph's collar and flicks his tongue at the stranger, sizing him up. The black viper's skin reflects in the sun a bit and the red design on its back is visible.

A bird flies past him while he rides, spinning in the air and weaving about obviously having the time of his life, and Feyjarl's mind drifts back to the good times with Zhang - the birds swift but fluid movements reminding him of the beauty of Zhang's combat ability. He sighs aloud and glances behind him, 'I hope they get some decent information from him' He thinks, 'Strange how this single traveller didn't seem the least bit afraid of a well armed group of strangers riding up behind him, and even now seems very trusting, or maybe confident...'

"Other critters..." he ponders Hmark's question. "I've heard rumors that there are ettins on the hunt. And there's supposed to be a wyvern nesting in the north Hills."
He listens carefully to Zeph's reply. "I, too, am interested in righting wrongs," he says, but does not elaborate. "I am from Huxwell, in New Elanna, originally," he adds. "But I have lived many places, and seen many things since I left there."

Assuming Zeph is OK with the stranger's request, Hmark locks his gaze on Mr New Elenna, pulls out his bow, nocks and arrow and holds it (pointing toward the ground) in an easy and practiced manner.

Zeph is a bit skeptical.
Anything he has to say to me he can say in front of my friends. Zeph thinks at first, but then decides it would be best to earn the man's trust to perhaps get more information for the group.
Zeph looks at Hmark's reaction and whispers, "Good idea. Can never be too careful... but I can take care of myself. You guys go ahead. I think I can get some more information out of him if he trusts us."

Zeph listens to the man and remembers back when he was a guardsman in Plateau City. There was a cult of Jancassis that preached every now and then about revenge. Zeph visited there every once and a while to listen to them and what they had to say. He did not like much of what they spoke of, but saw the power their god granted them and envied it.
Zeph thanks the man, "I appreciate this. If anyone could help me kill my enemies, it would probably be them. I would do anything to find those responsible for the atrocities of my past. Let evil kill evil and the innocent remain so. Zeph says, wondering how the man noticed his deepest desires.
If I have to sell my soul to become powerful enough to reap my revenge... then so be it. Zeph thinks as he looks at the amulet of the spider. He notices that the spider has the same color code as Sliver. An omen? Zeph thinks.
Zeph walks back to the group. "He gave me some advice for a career choice. Perhaps he knew me better than I knew him for some reason."
Then Zeph notices the noise that everyone is preparing for. He sees Kiel ready his weapon and does the same, drawing his bow. He allows the horse he has been riding, Shadow, to follow Phoenix.
"The traveler said Ettins right? If that sound is what I think it is, then combat may be unavoidable. It's best if I hide off the path a little ways to ensure surprise. My arrows strike best when the enemy is unaware. After I fire, I will try to flank with Kiel, Feyjarl, the bear, and anyone else in melee. If I can't get a flanking position, then I may need an Invisibility spell from you, Axara." Zeph says, knowing that his hand in magic is nothing compared to his skill at killing surprised enemies.
Then Zeph thinks about it again, "But then again, if combat can be avoided, then that is best - so words first? I'll be behind something ,within 30feet of them listening."
With that, Zeph moves off the path and tries to find some cover to hide behind, preferably a tree, bushes, fencing, anything. Then Zeph will try to peek in the distance at whatever could be approaching. Sliver whispers things in his ear. Yeah, Grease could make them fall, and Shield can keep me alive. I hate fighting big things, so hard to reach their organs with weapons. he thinks

So if you are hidden, you can shoot them without me wasting a spell. Now if you want to be sneaky and properly use an invisibility spell, you should try to master rogue and assassin moves rather than trying to be a magician." Her disdain when she says the word 'magician' is quite obvious.
"I think that if it is Ettins we are about to face, discussions would be useless. But I don't like this fight first talk second approach. We should be ready to prepare to defend ourselves but should not constantly attacking the others first.

Hearing the creatures approach, you make your preparations. Unfortunately, there isn't much cover up here. The hills are covered with waving grasses that reach to about knee-high. Scrubby, scattered bushes won't hide anything much bigger than a cat. Your campsite is tucked into the hollow of a hill; it is from the other side of the hill that you hear the creatures approach.
Zeph manages to find some cover by scrambling down into a ditchlike hollow. He can really only acheive cover here by lying flat, but when he does so, the rising ground blocks him from view.
Hmark and Dash take cover in a similar hollow with varying degrees of success. Axara makes herself invisible as Kiel and Selemar ready for battle.
When the three creatures appear over the hill, they are indeed ettins. Rollo moves forward to try to talk with them, but his only reply is a giant-sized javelin that thumps into the ground in front of him. Another javelin, aimed at Selemar, is thrown with more accuracy; Selemar is hit for 9 damage. A third javelin flies at Kiel, hitting for 11 damage.

(You may summon the swarm so that it shares the area of other creatures.) If no living creatures are within its area, the swarm attacks or pursues the nearest creature as best it can. The caster has no control over its target or direction of travel.
Spider Swarm: Hit Dice: 2d8 (9 hp) Initiative: +3 Speed: 20 ft. (4 squares), climb 20 ft. Special Attacks: Distraction, poison
Distraction: Any living creature that begins its turn with a spider swarm in its space must succeed on a DC 11 Fortitude save or be nauseated for 1 round. The save DC is Constitution-based.
Poison: Injury, Fortitude DC 11, initial and secondary damage 1d3 Str. The save DC is Constitution-based.
COMBAT In order to attack, a single swarm moves into opponents' spaces, which provokes an attack of opportunity. It can occupy the same space as a creature of any size, since it crawls all over its prey, but remains a creature with a 10-foot space. Swarms never make attacks of opportunity, but they can provoke attacks of opportunity.
Unlike other creatures with a 10-foot space, a swarm is shapeable. It can occupy any four contiguous squares, and it can squeeze through any space large enough to contain one of its component creatures.
Vulnerabilities of Swarms Swarms are extremely difficult to fight with physical attacks. However, they have a few special vulnerabilities, as follows:
A lit torch swung as an improvised weapon deals 1d3 points of fire damage per hit.
A weapon with a special ability such as flaming or frost deals its full energy damage with each hit, even if the weapon's normal damage can't affect the swarm.
A lit lantern can be used as a thrown weapon, dealing 1d4 points of fire damage to all creatures in squares adjacent to where it breaks.

(OOC: Kathy- Hmark and Garret said they were hiding, Dash said he was standing with Rollo.)
Zeph will inch himself forward until he gets within 30" of Ettin number 3 (which is only a 5foot hop). He is moving in the grass on his stomach, looking like a lion about to pounce on prey. It actually looks rather silly... or it would if the Ettins could see him (could I use the rolls from before? Since its the same hide attempt really. hide=24. Move silent=23). He has his arrow in his mouth and his bow in his hand as he crawls forward.
Once he is within 30feet of Ettin #3, Zeph will look to see where he should shoot to hit vital organs. Only got one shot at this. Once they notice me, they will be able to defend themselves. I wonder if their anatomy is about the same as a man's even though they have two heads. Zeph thinks as he slowly notches his bow.
Then, suddenly, after sliding to square Q-10, Zeph raises to his knees and notches his arrow, pulls it back and lets it fly at Ettin #3, aimed for its abdomen (Hit AC22. Flatfoot if their spot doesn't beat my hide. Damage total =14)
After Zeph's arrow goes, he knows he is seen by everything on the battlefield. His next action depends on the Ettin's weapons they have drawn. If the Ettins still have Javelins, then Zeph will casually drop back on the ground to make it harder to be hit by a ranged weapon. If they have melee weapons at the ready, Zeph will use his move action to draw his Rapier.
Free Action: 5-foot hop to square Q-10 Standard Action: shoot Ettin 3 from 30" away. hit AC 22, flat-footed unless they noticed me. Damage=14. Move Action: Draw Rapier or drop back to ground, depending on what the Ettins are wielding. If they have both... Zeph will draw his Rapier.

OOC; Did the entangle get cast? If so it's a reflex save at DC 15 to avoid getting entangled. As a full round action, one can make a Strength check or Escape Artist Check (DC20) to move at half speed.
Selemar looks rather surprised. He's not often struck and doesn't like it much. He's filled itht he sort of anger that can only be appeased by calling lightning from the sky and destroying a foe. Luckily for him, he has call lightning prepared. Not so lucky for the ettins.

Then Zeph moves to square P-5 with his Rapier drawn. He enters the grasping vines extremely carefully, tiptoeing his way while still trying to keep an eye on the Ettin. (Reflex save = 22. (OOC: Hey. Here's a funny question. Would the class ability "Evasion" make it so that I don't move at 1/2 speed when I succeed on the Reflex save?? I don't think it does... but its a funny thought.
On a side note. I think I found our weakness. Here we are fighting mobs that are the standard "brute" type. Low reflex/will saves and low touch AC with high attack bonus. Most groups are great at killing these types of monsters, but I predict this will be a close fight for us for some reason. Maybe we would fair better against some casters? Just some OOC thoughts that go through my head.)

[OOC Reminder: If you score a critical hit, roll your additional die or dice. Do not roll a single die and multiply the result.]
[OOC Clarification: 5-foot steps are only possible in normal terrain. When speed is slowed, a single square is 10 feet of movement and is therefore not a 5-foot step. Such a move is subject to attacks of opportunity.]
Valiant Shun falls unconscious, and an enraged Selemar retaliates with more lightning. He begins to move toward his companion. [OOC: I moved you assuming you wanted to stay out of the Entangle and Ettin 2's reach.]
Kiel continues pressing his foe, slashing the giant once.
Zeph feints his giant superbly, but alas the follow-up attack misses its mark. [OOC: Since there are no 5-foot steps in the Entangle, you didn't have enough actions left to move (feint+attack)]
The swarm apparantly decides it likes the taste of ettin better than the taste of unconscious bear, because it follows Ettin 2.
Hmark fires two more arrows, but is unable to conntect.
Rollo steps back and casts a spell. Unfortunately, he is still in the ettin's reach (10-foot reach), so the ettin takes an attack of opportunity as the spell is being cast. It hits for 16 points of damage. Rollo, please make a Concentration check, DC 26, to cast your Sanctuary spell. [OOC: with summoning spells, you can determine where the critter shows up when it actually shows up; you don't need to specify it initially. Also, I put your badger in D-7 to avoid the swarm.]
Garret clonks one of Ettin 2's heads with his sling.
Dash steps up to Ettin 2 [right? I wasn't sure which one you meant], and slashes a vicious wound in its leg. [OOC: Called shots are an optional rule, which we are not using.]
Ettin 1, not really interested in fighting an unconscious bear, begins trying to free himself from the Entangle. With a mighty pull of his massive thews, he tears himself free and tromps out of the spell's area.
Ettin 2 does not succumb to the swarm's distraction effect, but does succumb to the poison. A little of his strength leaves him. He steps out of the swarm (5-foot step), and swings his maces at Dash/. He lands two solid blows; one for 15 damage and one for 14 damage.
Ettin 3 continues working on Kiel, landing a critical blow! Kiel is rocked for 23 points of damage! Fortunately, his follow-up misses.

When Zeph sees the Ettin's morning star crash down on Kiel and hears the sound of bones snapping, Zeph gasps.
No, no, no, no, no. Not going to happen. One more hit and Kiel's a gonner. The Ettin can't attack if its on the ground can it? Zeph thinks as he pulls a bit of fried pig's ear out of his spell component pouch. Zeph keeps his attention focused on the Ettin's movements so it can't squeeze in an attack as he casts his spell, aimed at the thing's feet (Defensive Casting concentration check=17, Success. 10% spell failure, got 41, success).
As Zeph finishes the Grease spell, a pool of black slippery liquid explodes on Ettin #3's feet. (Reflex save DC=15. Or fall prone). (It covers a 10-foot square. So I'll just put it in the squares the Ettin is covering.)
After the Spell is cast, Zeph will use his remaining move action to Feint Ettin#3. (Bluff=31, nat 20. Feints last until my next turn if no attack is made on the turn the feint is achieved...btw.) In his Feint, Zeph will swipe at the Ettin's knees with his rapier and shout things like, "Hey, I'm your real threat you ignorant, smelly, OGRE-SPAWN!" Hoping that it will take the attention away from Kiel.
Standard Action: Cast Grease on defensive (Concentration=17, success) aimed at the squares Ettin #3 is on top of. Move-Equivilant Action: Feint (Bluff=31, Nat 20). Flat-footed until my next attack, as long as that attack is on my next turn.

Badly wounded, Kiel steps back and concentrates on defending himself.
But nobody messes with Axara's boyfriend. Or, her....whatever. She lets fly a trio of Magic Missiles, becoming visible in the process.
Rollo's badger nobly enters the fray, sinking its teeth into the giant. Hmark's arrows finish the creature off. Ettin 2 goes down!
Selemar drops a Flaming Sphere on top of the ettin that attacked Shun. The creature hisses in pain, and the smell of burned giant wafts over the battlefield.
Rollo heals himself as his badger moves to chew on the other ettin. [OOC: I changed the move since E2 is down. Let me know if you'd prefer something else.]
Zeph goes all-out to protect his companion Kiel. The Grease works like a charm; ettin 3 slips to the ground with a loud thump and an even louder bellow of rage. Zeph follows up by feinting his opponent so badly the giant doesn't know which way is up.
Garret, seeing that ettin 2 has fallen, slings his stone at ettin 1 instead. It hits solidly.
Dash fires a shot at ettin 3, which misses. Valiant Mich charges the beast, drawing an attack of opportunity. Fortunately the giant misses [nat 1!], and Mich sinks his teeth into the ettin.
The swarm of spiders, still loose on the battlefield, decides to find out what Dash tastes like. Dash takes 2 points of swarm damage. Dash, in your next round, you need to make 2 Fortitude saving throws, one against the distraction caused by the swarm, and one against the swarm's poison. The DC for both saves is 11. If you fail the distraction save, you are nauseated for 1 round. If you fail the poison save, you take 3 points of Strength damage.
Ettin 1 decides it does not want to be in the same square as a ball of fire. It has to move, however, to get completely off the sphere, so it provokes an attack of opportunity from the badger. Then it swings its mace at Dash, hitting for 15 damage.
Ettin 3 decides not to stand up. Doing so would provoke attacks of opportunity from Zeph and Mich, and anyway he would need to make a Balance check. Instead, he attacks from prone, swinging one mace at Zeph and one at Mich. It hits only Zeph, doing 13 points of damage.
Ettin 1: -28 hit points Ettin 2: down Ettin 3: Entangled, prone, -27 hit points

I swear, if Kiel makes it, I kill him myself for taking such risk. Does he care about me? No, let's take stupid risk and break my heart! Actually, I need to rethink him. As soon as this fight is over, I need to rethink him and me."
She unleashes another barrage of magic missiles and her magic fueled by her anger does quite some damages to the ettin.
I wonder which one of the idiots will make a parallel between the Hawkmen and the ettins. Will any of them have the guts to do it openly or they will all think of it in their head but they nothing, probably out of respect for Kiel?

According to tables on page 151 in the PHB, Entangled people suffer a -2 penalty to all attack rolls and a -4Dexterity penalty, meaning -2AC... would that change anything in the past rounds b/c I don't think they were accounted for? Also, while a character is prone, all other characters get a +4 to melee attack and -4 to ranged attacks against that prone person. Also, the prone person gets -4 to all attacks they make, which Kathy accounted for. My question is this: would we get the +4 on attacks of opportunity against him if he stands up?)
Zeph smiles to himself as the large Ettin topples to the ground in the pool of grease. Imagine his surprise when the head of the large morning star shoots up and catches Zeph square in the gut. Zeph almost doubles over in pain as he taste his own blood in his mouth, his vision blurring.
Broken rib? Zeph thinks as a new, fresh set of adrenaline gets pumped from his adrenal gland.
Zeph tries to focus himself through the pain, he quickly thrusts his Rapier downward, into the prone Ettin's stomach (its still flat footed from my last feint) while using his Combat Expertise to finish his attack rather defensively. (-4 from hit,+4 to AC) Zeph's blade bites deeply into the thing's stomach (17damage).
He then uses his move action to swipe and kick at Ettin#3 again, to try to get the creature to protect the wrong side of him. (Feint bluff as move action=18)
SO my full attack to him would be d20+7(from bonus)-4(From combat Expertise)+4 (from opponent being prone). Hit AC 20, (But-2AC from the dex penalty to the Ettin being entangled)
Standard Action:Attack Ettin #3 hit AC20. Using Combat Expertise, -4 from hit, +4 to AC. But the +4to melee attacks because he is prone cancels out the -4 from Combat Expertise. Damage total=17
Move Action: Feint Ettin#3. Bluff=18. (OOC:If it decided to stand up and provoke an AOO, then would the Ettin be considered flat footed from THAT AOO attack? The rule for feinting says it applies "until your next melee attack, as long as that attack happens before or during your next round." So the AOO would technically be the "next attack" right? I mean, you can turn AOO into trip attempts, so why not sneak attacks?)
(Reflex save vs Entangle=22)
(Also, Dathish. DMKathy posted that Ettin 1 and 3 are still up and fighting. You are closer to Ettin 1, so you should probably just melee attack him since you don't have enough movement to reach Ettin 3 and do melee attack. Also, if you have a BAB of at least +1 you can combine drawing a weapon with a move action, quick draw makes it a free action.

Anyways. Yeah, I know you got 40feets of movement, you big Barbarian you. But just look at the map and count up the feets of movement it would take to cross that field of Green entangle spell. Remember, entangle turns a 5foot square into a 10foot square. Also, every other diagonal square is 10foot normally... so it would be a stretch for you to charge over the field of your own entangle spell. I dunno, I'm not good at counting movement correctly. You would also need to succeed on your Reflex throw or have to take a full round action and str check to bust out of it, which would ruin your turn in a heartbeat. Now... if you dismissed the entangle spell, we would be in business.

Selemar inflicts fire and lightning on ettin 1. Both do their full damage.
Garret slings a stone at ettin 1, and Hmark sinks two arrows into him. Ettin 1 is looking really, really hurt.
Rollo rushes over to heal Dash, who steps up and clocks ettin 1. [OOC: You cannot charge across difficult terrain, and an Entangle spell is difficult terrain. Having a BAB of +1 allows you to draw a weapon as part of a move action; it does not allow a draw as a free action. The Quick Draw feat is what would allow you to draw as a free action. I therefore changed your actions to: draw a weapon (move action), five-foot step (which is its own weird little sub-action), attack the ettin (standard action).]
Ettin 1 goes down.
Zeph stabs downward with his rapier. The ettin, enraged, frustrated, and confused, is no match for the sly rogue's attack. He coughs up a bubble of black blood and goes limp.

He looks a bit somber as he looks up to Kiel. Zeph smiles at the Ranger and says, "See. Teamwork. Teamwork and magic." Zeph says with a smile, truly grateful that Kiel is still with the group.
Then Zeph hears Axara's tirade at Dathish and then at Kiel. He watches with amusement, thinking that his friends really are a diverse bunch. Maybe I should teach Dathish and Kiel about the Combat Expertise I picked up when I was in the city guard. It can truly help when engaged in melee Zeph thinks
He walks away from the dead Ettin, dodging out of remnants of Entangle spell and swipes his blade in the air to get blood off of it. He coughs a little as the slight pain in his chest raises up again. Then Rollo comes with his healing stick. "Thanks Rollo. You're a true servant of Eberyon." Zeph says to the gnome.
Zeph walks over the battlefield towards Hmark, taking swipes at the Shield spell still rotating around him. Well. This spell makes using my buckler a waste, since it acts as a shield. Lotta help it did against the Ettin though.
Zeph will look at the other Ettin's corpses and see what kind of damage was dealt to them. He sees the scorching from lightning and the flaming sphere and he smiles. Then he sees the several arrows in the two giants and smiles again.
He walks over to Hmark and says, "From the depth that those arrows are into the Ettin's skin, I guess you practically took one down alone eh?"
Finally, Zeph sits down at the camp site and pulls out a quill and parchment to take notes on combat tactics and ways to improve the group's strategy. He also takes notes on the happenings between group members. [i]I should find a tobacco pipe and pick up that habit if I'm going to write a book. Zeph thinks with a smile.

Zeph takes the circlet, the topaz brooch, and the gold coins to the campsite and sits down and looks at them. He is a bit excited to get his first chance to use Detect Magic. He quickly casts the spell and looks at the items.
He divides the 1100 gold by 8 and gives Garret, Selemar, Kiel, Axara, Dathish, Rollo, Hmark, and himself 137.5 gold. (Added to loot sheet. Don't forget to add it to your character sheets.)
Zeph says to anyone who is interested, and particularly to Axara: "Hey, there's a brooch that looks valuable--a twist of copper with a cabuchon topaz. Another ettin had in his pouch a glittering golden circlet studded with tiny seed pearls. I'm casting detect magic now, to see if they are enchanted or just valuable gems. If they are magical, I would like Axara to please cast Identify on them. After all, as Rollo said: these creatures were evil, and we are doing good. Let whatever we receive be for good reason and let anyone who can use the items effectively, lay claim to them." Zeph coughs a bit after his little speech, although the rib healed up nicely, he still has quite a large bruise on his chest beneath his tunic and armor.
Of course, what is laid claim to, will be deducted from your total loot. Zeph thinks, hoping that the circlet can increase the amount of spells he can cast in a day.

Zeph's eyes go a little wide at the mention of the 100gp cost to identify a spell. "Oh yeah. I forgot about that. Well, tell you what. We can simply subtract the 200gold for identification from the 1100gold we got from the giants. That would result in 900gold split 8 ways... or 112.5 each rather than 137.5 each. That way Identification costs come out of group loot. Hows that sound?" Zeph says with a smile..
He then pulls out the difference, which is 25 gold and lays it on the table. Then he digs in his assorted gems from the last adventure's loot and pulls out two pearls, worth 200gold total. "Here. We can use my pearls. Everyone just put 25gold in the pile and I'll take the pile since we are using my pearls. That way I lose 200gold in pearls, and gain 175gold back, and so everyone, including myself, spent 25gold on the identification." Zeph says, trying to make sure everything is fair and noone gets stiffed.
In truth though, I don't mind paying for it. Whats a few gold between friends? But maybe since we set the president already, we should stick to it. Zeph thinks to himself.
(OOC: SO everyone subtract 25gold from your character sheet. 200/8=25. Also, Kiel. The loot from the encounter with Ruglio and his merry men was divided up the post after you left. And I didn't know if your character was coming back or not, so I think I included your total in Buhl's... so if you want, perhaps you can subtract 714gold from Buhl's and add it to your own? It would be harder roleplay wise to subtract 85 from everyone's total so they can give it to you... but we can still do that.. just IMO.)

No, I don't like the base camp idea- we should move. And to avoid such ambushes, we should let Mich go ahead of us by about 200meters or so, he can run back to us if he catches a wiff he don't like. It would be nice to have a warning." Zeph says as he pulls out his book on magic that Dulcet gave him and starts perusing through the pages again.
Zeph looks up with a smile on his face, "Of course... that is just my opinion." Then he begins to think about battle tactics again, and draws up a small map of a combat.
"I have a few notes I made of that encounter I would like to share with anyone who is willing to listen." Zeph says
Axara[AC: 17 HP 30/30]Picture Wednesday April 29th, 2009 9:58:12 PM
Axara looks at Zeph with a dejected look "Don't call me ma'am. Do I look like your grand-ma pretty boy? Unbelievable!" She shakes her head in disgust. "Let's get the hell out of here as fast as we can so we find the damn wyven and get rid of the codex and we can move on with our lives .... ma'am? You got to be kidding me ..... "
DM Kathy Thursday April 30th, 2009 12:44:11 AM Zeph casts a Detect Magic spell, but neither the brooch nor the circlet detect as magical.
You discuss whether to stay here for the night, or whether to move on in case there are more ettins.
Judging from their gear, you surmise that these ettins were a hunting party. Of course, that still doesn't tell you whether there are more ettins nearby.
Also, the three giant dead bodies smell pretty bad.

Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:21 HP:21/21] Thursday April 30th, 2009 8:50:00 AM
Garret watches the interaction with interest, but stays clear of the apparently angry Axara. He wonders to himself, "I suppose it could be that time for her, but her time seems to last for weeks. Oh well."
When the suggestions begin about moving along, Garret quickly agrees, "These steaming corpses are going to be bringing all sorts of guests real soon. It might be their backup, or it might be any of a number of other things, none of which we need to bother with right now."
He takes a deep breath, then turns and addresses Axara, "I really wish we could get through an encounter without you yelling at someone. Do you think that just once you could realize this is about something bigger, apparently a lot bigger, than just you?"
With that Garret turns, takes another deep breath, then smiles and starts walking along in their previous direction, looking around at the trees and grasses again.
Axara[AC: 17 HP 30/30]Picture Thursday April 30th, 2009 9:07:50 AM
Axara looks at Kiel and rolls her eyes "Funny. Very Funny Kiel. Freakingly hilariious. I was wrong about you. You fully blend with that group. You belongs. Good for you."
She waits for Zeph to do his detect magic spell. Once the result is known, she asks him "I guess they are just decorative. Do you want me to keep the pearls for next time we find magical items or do you want to keep them as they belong to the group? And by the way, here are the 25 GP which is my share of the pearls cost."
She gets ready to ride when Garrett finally expresses his feeling towards her. She looks at the halfling with a surprised look before replying "Listen munchkin, why dont do go on looking at the trees, the birds and the bees and go ask farmers what kind of manure is best to grow artichokes? I did not join this job by accident like you. So don't question my commitment to it. I am here for the job, not for your company. "
She gets on Miss Mare and starts riding when the group decides to leave, looking at the nails, her cut off gloves and playing with the claws on her choker. "Pots, Pretty Boy, Farm Boy, Brand, Dumbbell and now Munchkin. Two left without nickname. Things are looking better."
Zeph AC19 HP32/37 HeroesLoot3 Thursday April 30th, 2009 10:22:09 AM
Zeph turns over the items one last time in his hands before the Detect Magic fades from his eyes. He also looks over at the corpses again, hoping to see some kind of glow.
Well. At least we worked out a system for identification. Getting kinks out of a group is a good thing. Zeph thinks optimistically... then he hears Axara's and Garret's conversataion and sighs.
In response to Axara, "Sure, that's fine. At the end of the day we all spend 12.5gold each per identification. That's all we gotsta remember." Zeph says with a smile.
"So... let's get moving?"
Zeph will ask to have the watch with Selemar when nightfall. He will spend equal time walking around the perimeter of the camp as with the Druid. Zeph will ask questions about druidisism to feed his curious nature.

(Appraise=24. Natural 20!)
Zeph is clearly disappointed at the jewelry found. "Well. Let me see how much they are worth and how that should be divided." Zeph says as he looks at the stones and metal of the jewelry and compares it to other gems he has in his backpack. (Nat 20 on appraise)
Zeph turns to Garret and smiles "I figure you can hold them and we can sell em when we get back to Dulcet to split it evenly. Or you can just have them and pay the group the difference. Like if they are worth 1000gold, you can keep them give us 1000gp to be divided amongst the 7 remaining."
Sigh... I like math. It's people I don't understand sometimes... Well... most people.
After that, Zeph will go to Hmark, "Wanna show me how the heck you shoot so accurately?{/b]

As the night falls, Axara smiles return to her face. She keep quiet as darkness takes over. When it is time to retire for the night, she asks. "Can I take the watch with Hmark?" She will thank the hero if he accepts the switch or will rolls her eyes if he refuses.
Assuming he accepts, she will do her watch in silence, knowing that Hmark is most confortabl not talking to her and being away from her. After her watch is over she will go to the side and look at the moon and the stars while playing with her choker. "I really need to rethink that Kiel thing. I am not sure this is good for me, for him or for the group. I thik I should focus on the Job more. He is careless and makes me careless. Not a good thing. I need time to think it through ...."

CDM Jerry Thursday April 30th, 2009 2:04:38 PM
The ACDMs have decided that Big Tim should no longer be a Woldian member. He has been disruptive in nearly every game he has played in over the years. He received several warnings--so to speak--and extra chances in his latest game: The Making of a Hero. Today, they decided he should not remain with us anymore.
I did NOT participate in this decision. Tim used to sit at my local table and we've been friends over the years and so I removed myself from this decision several months ago. However, I do support the decision.
His password has been revoked and he shouldn't be able to post anymore nor read any private pages.
Kathy, his DM has been informed already as have all active DMs.
We wish him well.

Hmark Thursday April 30th, 2009 3:43:07 PM
Hmark leans over Garret as Axara walks away. "Guess not," he answers the gnome.
Zeph's question lightens the mood, and the archer chuckles. "Can you teach me all that spellcasting mumbo jumbo?" he replies rhetorically. He holds up his bow. "Took me nearly a year to learn how to make a bow at all, and then another half year to get Red just right. I ain't that good with any other bow. So, I guess 18 months an' a lot of practice...." He smiles again. The lad clearly enjoys talking about his bow.
-
Axara asks to take watch with him, and Hmark is too stunned to do much more than nod. The watch comes, and the lad waits for the dark clad woman to say something, but she doesn't. Even more confused, and well aware of what happens to fellows who try to initiate conversations with this lady, Hmark goes with safety first, and spends the watch silently.

DM Kathy Friday May 1st, 2009 1:02:26 AM Zeph appraises the brooch at about 400 gp. The circlet, he figures, is worth around 3,000 gp.
You have much to talk over as you make camp and set watches. Nothing disturbs your rest, and the next day you continue on your hunt.
Up here on the hills, the sky seems bigger somehow. With few trees to impede the view, it feels as if you can see forever.
So it is that, all day long, you can see a storm approaching. Even the least weather-wise among you can look up and see the small clouds scurrying across the sky ahead of a rushing wind, can see the grasses toss and wave, can watch the gray-black mass of clouds building on the horizon, then sweeping closer.
It is summer, so it is highly unlikely the storm will pose any great danger to the group. However, you are pretty exposed up here, and likely to get wet and uncomfortable if you don't manage some kind of shelter.
Zeph AC19 HP32/37 HeroesLoot3 d20+9=16 ; d20+9=25 ; Friday May 1st, 2009 3:32:04 AM
Zeph looks up at the approaching rain clouds and sighs. He looks over at Dathish, "Well, how 'bout it nature-man? Look like rain?" he says with a wry smile.
Then Zeph turns to Garret and says after thoroughly exploring the value of the jewelry, "The pendant is about 400gp and the circlet about 3000. You can hold onto them for now and we can sell them when we get back to town and make sure that I am correct about the value."
If and when the storm gets to arriving, Zeph will try his best to help the more nature-wise individuals construct some sort of shelter. With the few trees available in the hills, Zeph will try to keep an eye out for one to make camp around, hoping that the branches may provide some cover from the rain.
"How in the world will we make a fire tonight?" he says to noone in particular.

OOC: I'm still away from home, and don't have much to post, but Selemar also had cast entangle, so Dathish couldn't have dismissed it. He stands by his decision, as it tied up the ettins, and should have cost them an action or two.
Thanks for healing my pet.

Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:21 HP:21/21] d20+5=24 ; d20+1=17 ; Friday May 1st, 2009 8:37:25 AM
Garret laughs with Hmark and looks at his bow. As they continue, Garret gets Hmark to talk more about his bow and mentions how he likes his sling just because he doesn't have to worry about making or buying bad arrows, even if the rocks don't hit as hard. When Axara asks to be on watch with Hmark, Garret look at him with wide eyes, just as surprised.
He smiles and takes the gems from Zeph and replies, "Certainly. I'll be glad to carry the gems, I like them, and don't worry, I'll return them and share their value when we return to civilization."
As the group watches the storm approach, Garret watches it, fascinated. "I love storms," he says to no one in particular. He starts looking around the area for some sort of shelter for the animals, hoping to spot a good cave that they can explore before the storm arrives.

Hmark happily chatters away with Garret about the 6 months he spent attempting to form a masterwork bow. "Red was the third try," he reveals. "The other two had flaws and broke."
---
"I love storms" Hmark looks at Garret with a 'are you crazy?' expression. "Storms get you wet," the lad points out with exaggerated patience. "And the only thing worse than being wet, is being around a bunch of animals that are wet." He glances at Selemar's companion. "Wet bear smell - mmmmmmmm" he gushes, sarcastically.
The archer sits higher on Stardancer, casting about. "Surely there's a big rock around here we can duck under......" [Spot 11]
Zeph AC19 HP32/37 HeroesLoot3 Friday May 1st, 2009 5:49:32 PM
Zeph smiles when Dathish asks about the combat tactics. "Well, really it involves people working together. Firstly, I think you did a good job. Melee is obviously what you are good at and you should always try to find flanking positions with others - its too bad we were separated in the last fight. Hmark did what he can do best, and he knows to aim after spellcasters and to stay away from firing into combat. The improvement I can see would be if Garret would try to tumble his way into melee with us to help with flanking. Tumble is useful for avoiding attacks as you move about the battlefield." Zeph says.
" Besides that, there are different tactics for different types of enemies. Firstly, the 'brute' type- such as Ettins. They only had two javelins to throw, so we SHOULD have just laid down two layers of entangle and fired at them from afar until they reach us. I think that is called 'kiting'- just staying out of melee until absolutely necessary if melee is what the enemy is good at. This of course would not work for spellcasters as they would just stand there and blast us." Zeph says he long speech and draws a combat map.
"Also, when people get hurt in combat and close to collapsing, we might have to rely on Axara to throw Invisibility on them so they do not get finished off before they can reach healing. Oh, speaking of spellcasters- its never a good idea for us to bunch up to much when fighting them. I'm reading about some... devastating spells. Lastly, both healers and arcane spellcasters should be targeted first and neutralized by Hmark, Axara, and anyone else with good mobility or range, while you, me, and Garret keep the enemy melee people occupied and away from our ranged teammates."
Zeph can go on for quite a while. He finishes with, "The last and probably most important thing is the element of surprise. When I am hidden, I can hit em where it hurts... so I don't mind being the first to fire to give away our position. Also, if we are ever in good hiding, the tactic of Entangle plus ranged attacks can be rather devastating. But overall, we should focus on one enemy together at a time as to prevent any partial damage that can be healed."
After he talks, Zeph thinks he may have put several people to sleep. He goes back to his writing.
Then, suddenly he remembers and looks up. "Oh yeah. About wyverns. I think you may be correct about trying to sunder the thing's tail off. But as for as climbing on it's back- I don't know about that unless you plan on wrestling with it. It may be difficult to climb on the thing's back and use your bastard sword at the same time. I think your best bet is probably just swinging the pointy stick after casting your strength magic. Speaking of enhancement magic... mind throwing me a Cat's Grace maybe next time?" Zeph asks with a smile.
