Grymash (ac24 hp47/125, -4 level drain, darkvision, prayer, bulls strength) d20+4=15 ; Wednesday May 6th, 2009 10:35:48 PM
Grymash, slack jawed and wide eyed, falls to his knees shaken to the core. Especially now in his weakened state. "Aauuughh! Lord Gargul! Gry be Lord Gargul's servant. Ask of Gry an it be done. Anythangs for Gry's Master an Lord!"
Gargul's Speech (DM JohnP) Wednesday May 6th, 2009 11:16:25 PM
Gargul nods in acceptance of the praise given to him by the Bloodpack. Even if not all of them are quite so impressed, the God does not deign to notice. The God speaks, his voice booming through the chamber and echoing down the corridors under Rattledam. Everyone has the impression that Gargul is not speaking at full volume, perhaps considering the threat of further damaging the ceilings and walls with the power of his divine voice.
"I am no longer restrained. And my part in this affair is done except for my usual duties. Even now, those killed during the Migration are gathering and petitioning for admission to my realm."
"This is the Child that the Manfri spoke of. I have sheltered the Child from the attention of Ga'al. It is now for the Manfri to complete their role. And for you to bear the Child to the Manfri."
Gargul shifts the Child, holding it in the crook of one arm so that he can extend a massive arm towards the Bloodpack.
"You have my blessing again. I withdraw the ban that I issued before. Do not, however, think that you are any more welcome in my realm until your true time occurs."
Gargul makes a casual gesture towards Flea and her haversack.
"One of you must carry the Child. Not in a device such as that, but in your arms. The burden is ... sometimes great. Would one of my servants take this burden?," says the God as he looks at Yanosh and Grymash.
Grymash (ac24 hp47/125, -4 level drain, darkvision, prayer, bulls strength) Thursday May 7th, 2009 12:49:01 AM
Mustering all the will power he can gather, Grymash slowly raises from the floor to a kneeling position. With hands outstretched in front of him he says, "Gry, mostist faith-filled servant, wills carry da babe if Lord Gargul see Gry worthy. Howevers, Gry wills no deny Yanosh da same honor. Yanosh or Gry, Lord Gargul please choose. Only Lord Gargul's most wise choice be best. Either ways, it be honor for Gry ta defend da babe wit life"
Trellus (AC 33, HP 75/93) (Magic Vestmentx2, Barkskin+3, Shield of Faith+4, Flying) Thursday May 7th, 2009 4:39:32 PM
Trellus winces a bit at the "burden is great" statement. But, if that was Domi standing there, he'd be doing the same thing Gry is. So, the blond man just waits.

Gilan[HP: 82/108 - AC: 27][endure elements, longstrider, barkskin, greater magic fang, mass bull's strength, prayer] Thursday May 7th, 2009 9:23:15 PM
Gilan moves off to another one of the bodies but looks up at what is said by Gargul. He raises his eyes and raises something that might be doable. "Lord Gargul...would it be possible to have each of your servants carry the child for part of the way?" It might not be a perfect solution but he cannot see denying either of them the chance to serve their god in turn. It was not his place but he would be more than happy to aid as well...but it is not his place.
Once he has spoken his piece, he will go back to working on the next body he is kneeling by.

Yanosh stands and draws himself to his full height. "I will carry the child too if you permit it my Lord Gargul."
Yanosh stands next to Flea, "No matter who carries the Child, myself or Grymash, the Child will be protected by the BloodPack as a whole. We are as one. For the Land, For the Pack."
The devout Dwarven Cleric looks at Gargul sternnly, "On my life the Child will reach the Mafri." With that Yanosh unstraps and shoulders his shield. He steps forward to take the Child from Gargul if he is chosen.

Gathering the Burdens (DM JohnP) Thursday May 7th, 2009 11:02:23 PM
Gilan has been searching the bodies of the fallen Ga'alians, looking for portable treasure. After a quick survey, he's managed to remove items from two of the bodies. After looting the second body, Gilan dares to suggest a possible means of sharing the burden between Grymash and Yanosh. DM Note - See Below for list of items on bodies
Grymash has spoken first, offering to bear the burden of the Child. The half-orc moves forward to accept the Child from his God. Trellus and Olaf both wait expectantly while the other members of the Bloodpack stand silently.
The defenders are still prostrated before God of Death and Life.
Now that Grymash has accepted the burden, Gargul shifts the Child in his arms so that he holds it in both hands. Then the God extends the Child towards Grymash before gently lowering it into his servant's waiting hands. Grymash finds that the Child is not as heavy as he was lead to believe, certainly not too great a burden. The Child feels warm against his skin and slightly moist. The surface feels firm, perhaps hard but Grymash hasn't dared to squeeze the Child to learn more.
"Take the Child to the Manfri. Protect it with your life, as you say."
"My role is complete and I shall be going to my realm. And you should be going, too. My servants may call upon me for guidance or answers without cost when the time seems right."
"Go now! Fulfill this task that you have been given!"
With that, the giant form of the god sinks down into the pool. Before disappearing from sight, Gargul makes a gesture that his servants, and maybe some others, recognize.
Grymash, Yanosh - Everyone else, Knowledge Religion DC 10 - Highlight to display spoiler: {The gesture is one commonly used by the priests of Gargul when completing the ceremonies welcoming a new life, or at the conclusion of a funeral.}
Ripples spread outwards on the surface of the Woldsblood from the point wher Gargul slipped beneath the surface. The viscous stuff laps over the surface of the pool, spreading out to just before Grymash's toes.

Grymash (ac24 hp47/125, -4 level drain, darkvision, prayer, bulls strength) Friday May 8th, 2009 3:23:28 AM
Grymash stands there stoic and hard, cradling the bundle in his arms. He looks down at the child with a piercing stare. The half orc doesn't seem himself. His face appears emotionless, but behind his eyes burns a fire, a spark, a glimmer. After looking at the child, his eyes close and he mutters a few words to himself. He turns his gaze to his pack. His expression is completely different from any of you have ever seen on his face. As if someone else was wearing Grymash's skin. "My friends, it's time we go. You've all done so well. Lord Gargul is proud of you all. This day shall be written in the stars and each of you have earned your place within the heavens."
Grymash turns to address the Rattledam defenders. "Please stand as I talk to you. I am not Lord Gargul. I am a simple servant. As you can see, Gargul himself gave us the authority to be here. We needn't your Council's permission. However you've served your purpose here well and earned your place among our numbers to deliver this child to the Manfri. For the Manfri have the favor of Lord Gargul. You may also represent Rattledam in offering the Manfri a tribute for their exalted status in this land and for the honor they so richly deserve. So I ask, who do you serve?"
Trellus (AC 33, HP 75/93) (Magic Vestmentx2, Barkskin+3, Shield of Faith+4) d20+8=24 ; Friday May 8th, 2009 9:01:32 AM
Trellus understands the gesture Gargul gives to his priests and quickly rises.
"We really need to be going now," he tells his packmates, with some urgency. "When a god says, 'Go, now', sticking around is a sunbaked idea."
Of course, it is at this precise moment when Grymash decides to get all eloquent on everybody, as well as asking the defenders to assist in the protection of the child. What's done is done, however, and Trellus adds no comment.
He does take advantage of this pause in the action to give his half-orc friend some much needed healing. [Cast Restoration off of that pesky scroll on Grymash]
Yanosh AC22- HP33/81 Hide from Undead, Bulls str, Prayer, Friday May 8th, 2009 11:04:34 AM
Yanosh steps back to his place as Gry takes the Child. Once Gry has finished speaking Yanosh places a hand on th Half-Orc. "Yes lets be off. Come Brother we must be sure to see your charge to saftey."
Gilan[HP: 93/108 - AC: 27][endure elements, longstrider, barkskin, greater magic fang, mass bull's strength, prayer] Friday May 8th, 2009 6:25:39 PM
Gilan stands slowly, fighting off the effects of so many changes and from the long battle. He has gone over the bodies and gotten what is of importance from each of those of the enemy. Glancing around, weary eyed from the battle he watches as Grymash takes the baby and then Gargul disappears.
When Gry starts talking, most unlike himself, he cannot help but smile and it comes as little surprise that it appears that something is talking through Gry. With a nod of his head he glances to the other pack in the cave still and shrugs his shoulders. "They are right, we must be going." He does not mind if the other pack comes with them, but it could be a death sentence for them if they do. Surely the Council will not be happy to know that they allowed the pack to live and going with them would be even worse.
Still he is ready to leave as soon as the rest are and will head in the direction of the exit to this room. He has seen enough of this area to last him and he will have to think on it for awhile. His form ripples and changes, slipping into that of one of the sightless birds that roams the plains.

Flea moves to keep a place beside Yanosh. She reaches out and gives the dwarve's shoulder a squeeze. In a low voice she speaks to the cleric of Gargul.
"Getting this kid to the Manfri isn't going to be a walk in the sun!" she says, "an' with Gry all warped around this egg-thing, he'll be no good for fighting if there are any more of these undead or vampire type folks waiting for us." Flea gives her kilted comrade a knowing look.
"Whatchu' think, Trellus?" she asks. "You think we better keep Gry in the middle and Yanosh close by...just in case? You want me to go scout out ahead? Maybe with Gilan? Where did he go?"

Tishe' is extactic that the Grey One has lifted the ban on her packmates, and, for once, is speechless!
The command and the advancing Woldsblood make her get back to reality and she lifts off to fly back towards the Golden Doors. Seeing the advancing Woldsblood, she calls warning to the Rattledam Defenders. "Watch out! I'll protect you!" And she uses her Staff of Ice to create a Wall of Ice that separates the Defenders and the Bloodpack.
"No time for words now!", she calls to the Bloodpack, "let's get going, get out of Rattledam, and get the Child to the Manfri!"
Tishe' is more than ready to run/fly out of here!

Onwards and Upwards (DM JohnP) Sunday May 10th, 2009 10:20:01 PM
Grymash accepts the burden of the Child from his god's arms, settling the Child into his arms. On close examination, Grymash and the others would guess that the Child was some kind of egg at least by its appearance. However, the half-orc finds that the Child is not a heavy burden but is certainly awkward and will require both arms to keep it secure. Yanosh stands by, ready to accept the burden if Grymash needs to pass it off.
While Grymash has been adjusting to his new burden, Trellus has taken the opportunity to heal him. Gilan completes the stripping of the bodies of their fallen opponents. Unless the shifter has some means of reducing the weight of all that armor, he will be heavily encumbered during the escape. Perhaps someone has a magical sack or bag? Or maybe Gilan will have to leave the armor and weapons behind?
Flea and Tishe' strategize, wondering how to best escape this place even as Vayine moves to cover their retreat. Even though Grymash has offered the Defenders the privilege of protecting the Child, Tishe' places a wall between themselves and the Defenders. The leader of the Defenders may have considered Grymash's offer but rejected.
"We defend Rattledam. The Heart is here and we will continue to defend it until we are ordered elsewhere, or it becomes undefensible."
In fact, after the Defenders rose from the floor after Gargul's departure, they moved to put themselves close to the Pool. The Wall might also serve to keep the rising tide of Woldsblood which was continuing to flood from the Pool. The last glimpse that the Bloodpack had before the wall of ice formed was of rivulets of the magical substance snaking across the floor. There was no immediate threat but the wall will provide some added time for them to escape.
Once they start moving, with Flea and the flying Tishe' near the front, the Bloodpack quickly return to the Golden Door. They must now decide how to escape ... back the way that they entered, or through a different path?

One Way is Blocked (DM JohnP) Monday May 11th, 2009 10:31:38 PM
The Bloodpack mill about, stuffing looted equipment into magical haversacks and waiting for Trellus to tell them which way to go. Unfortunately, the human cleric is silent.
Flea and the shifted Grymash, along with Tishe', move ahead to reconnoitre the paths away from the Golden Door. They already know about two potential paths - back the way that they came through the flooded tunnel or out through the holy complex controlled by the Monks. The flooded tunnel is the way that they have used many times before but it may be difficult if Grymash is burdened by the Child. The path controlled by the Monks may difficult considering that they have been fighting them since coming back to Rattledam.
Tishe's Light spell shows the damage caused by the quaking, fallen rocks and other debris litter the floor and the overhead is cracked and shifted. The path ahead is open at least as far as the pool.
Olaf moves to keep both the scouts and the others in sight. Grymash and Yanosh stay with Trellus while Vayine prepares to guard the back. Looking back towards the Woldblood chamber, Vayine can see that the wall of ice is changing, somehow. Without going back, though, it's impossible to tell exactly what is happening.
Just then, the tunnel shakes once more! Worse, a deep rumbling groan echoes through the tunnel as if the very earth itself is being torn apart.
The immediate danger are the many small and large pieces of stone and masonry that tumble down from the roof and walls. Everyone must try to dodge the falling hazards or be injured.
Reflex Save DC 15 or take 2d8 impact damage
The Bloodpack might be able to take the time to reconnoitre the paths out, or they may simply choose a path. They might wait for Trellus to decide or someone can simply act and the others can choose to follow, or not.

The Bloodpack move up to the pool and the flooded cave that should, Gods willing, take them up to near the surface and out into the open sunlight of the Sargrass. Trellus had stopped there, waiting for the others to catch up. Everyone clusters around since nobody seems to want to be the first to attempt the swim.
Yanosh sits near Grymash as the half-orc cradles the Child in his arms. With the benefit of the spell, Grymash should not have too much problems but it will be awkward. After scouting further along, Tishe' and Gilan both fly back to join the group. Olaf comes close, as well.
Vayine has been looking back towards the chamber and Golden Door just in case something approaches from that direction. The sharp eyes of the dark elf spot something on the floor that reflects light, maybe something flowing down the tunnel towards them.
The question facing the Bloodpack is this: who will first attempt the swim? And what order will the rest follow, with or without the spells offered by Gilan? All of this is complicated by the threat of further tremors that might drop more debris or even collapse the tunnels under Rattledam. Nothing is threatening the Bloodpack at this moment but the air is getting thick with dust that has been shaken loose by the tremors. There is a constant sound of shifting sand and soil, far off clatters of falling stone and the ominous deep rumble that seems to be a constant companion to their escape.
Trellus (AC 33, HP 75/93) (Magic Vestmentx2, Barkskin+3, Shield of Faith+4) Wednesday May 13th, 2009 8:56:21 AM
Trellus looks around, and nods toward the vertical tunnel. "OK, who hasn't weaved this pick before?"
The blond man quickly explains to that group what's about to happen. The vertical tunnel leads up to a small chamber, covered by some kind of magical membrane. The chamber is under a pool of water. "Push through the membrane, and swim up," he says. "We swam down to it as kids, so getting to the surface shouldn't be that hard." The blond man glances at Gilan, and memories from a cross ocean flight flood his mind. "Can you turn into one of them turtle things and help out if anyone gets in trouble?" he asks his friend.
"Gil and Gry first. Me and Tishe last. Let's weave."

Tishe' sets up to be the last one out with Trellus. "It's a bit of a delay, but I can help in getting some heavy swimmers through the water." In order to help the heavily armored ones, she taps herself with a Wand of Speak with Animals, and then brings forth her druidic magics to Summon 4 Crocodiles. Speaking with them, she asks them to allow her armored companions to hold onto the reptiles while they swim through the tunnel to the pool inside the Rattledam dome.
She will keep one for herself to hold on and swim the tunnel.

Through the Water (DM JohnP) Wednesday May 13th, 2009 10:46:04 PM
The Bloodpack organize themselves and begin to climb and swim their way to the surface. Grymash finds that the Child is a burden but not so bad that he has difficulty with either portion of the trip. The others keep close, making use of the summoned creatures and Gilan's shapeshifting to aid their passage upwards through the water.
Before leaving, Vayine looks back to see that the Golden Doors are now warped and twisted beyond belief, as if a giant creature tore them asunder. As he watches, though, one of the doors falls from it's hinges and the dark elf guesses that something is absorbing or destroying what ever magic was used in the construction of the great doors.
++++++
Everyone bobs to the surface in the pool, blinking water from their eyes. Somehow, something doesn't look or feel right ...
Those members of the Bloodpack who have darkvision look upwards and around and immediately realize what has occurred. The quake has his the cave as well, collapsing part of it and tumbling rocks and soil down into the pool. Further, there should be more light coming from the cave entrance ... unless, of course, a lot of time has passed and it is now night outside. But none of the Bloodpack think that is the reason for the lack of light from the entrance.
As they bob on the surface, the Bloodpack consider what to do next. Then, a shower of rocks and soil tumble down from above and splash the Bloodpack. Simaultaneously, a rumble sounds from what might be directly below the pool. It's then that the Bloodpack feel the first stirrings of current on their toes ...
Almost right away the water picks up speed, slowly spinning the Bloodpack and maybe pulling them below the surface.

In the Pool (DM JohnP) Thursday May 14th, 2009 11:46:15 PM DM Note(s):
Welcome Back, Carla!
I had a really good, detailed post written. Then I got booted from the site when I hit 'Submit'. Oh well, here's the gist of what I had written.
Those members of the Bloodpack who successfully swam to shore have pulled themselves out. Tishe' and Trellus have taken to the air. Grymash continues to hold the Child to his chest. The Child seems warm, somehow, and certainly does not appear to have been harmed by immersion in the water.
Vayine quickly scrambles ashore, moving so quickly in the water that he easily outpaces the crocodiles. Once on shore, his darkvision shows a rockfall at the entrance of the cave. There doesn't seem to be too many rocks and somone who is strong and knowledgeable about moving earth and stone should be able to make a passageway wide enough to allow humans and half-orcs through. Smaller folks like dwarves and gnomes would have no problem and neither would the fine-boned elves in the party.
Flea barely managed to grasp the end of Gilan's tail as she was swept by. She can hang on for now but the current it getting stronger and threatening to pull her free. Flea - DC 10 STR check to keep hold of GIlan. Failure means making the Swim check below.
Yanosh has merely been treading water and Olaf cannot make any headway. Both are swept away from the best spot to get out of the pool and can feel the current tugging more strongly on their feet. As they bob about, a large bubble bursts on the surface with a "POP!" that echoes through the cave. Other bits of flotsam are beginning to bob to the surface, too. Olaf and Yanosh - DC 15 Swim check (remember armor penalties) to make it to shore. Failure results in further bobbing like weighted corks. Failure by more than 10, or a critical failure, results in being pulled under water.

Once Yanosh is beached, Tishe' will call again. "I've got a couple of spells to shape the stone. If you tell me where best to put them, I can create buttressing arches to avoid further collapse as we dig out."

Having missed a good opportunity for rescue Flea is swept away from the best spot to get out of the pool and can feel the current tugging more strongly on her feet. As she bobs about, a large bubble bursts on the surface with a "POP!" that echoes through the cave.
Bits of flotsam are begin to bob to the surface, and she finds herself adrift along with Olaf and Yanosh. Making a second effort (Swim vs 15=21, nat. 20! Whew!) she strikes for shore until, with relief, she feels something solid under her feet.

Olaf struggles against the current and chaos of the foaming water, slowly inching towards the shore. He pulls himself out, grunting with the exertion [swim check 17 vs DC 15]. As he climbs out, he notices a large crocodile, whose presence he'd missed entirely, taken up with the efforts of staying afloat. "Heh heh...," he giggles in relief to himself.
On the Edge (DM JohnP) Sunday May 17th, 2009 10:55:18 PM
The Bloodpack manage to get every member safely to the shore. It was touch and go, for a moment, when Yanosh slipped below the surface of the water but Tishe' commanded her crocodiles to retrieve the dwarf. One of them emerged gripping Yanosh before he had turned blue with the effort of holding his breath. Olaf barely managed to make his way to shore on his own, dragging himself up onto the stone shelf beside the pool. Flea had arrived at the edge of the pool just before Olaf.
Meanwhile, Vayine had started shifting stones at the entrance of the cave. His wiry frame is more than capable of doing so but he's making little headway since a shower of smaller rocks and soils occurs every time he lifts anything. Still, the blockage isn't very deep since his senses, honed by years underground, can detect open air just on the other side.
Behind the Bloodpack, the water in the pool is swirling even faster. So fast that the summoned crocodiles are now struggling in the water and are trying to grasp the sides of the pool. Somehow, perhaps because of the tremors caused by the Great Migration, the magical barrier has been ruptured or the bottom of the pool has cracked. The consequences of all of this water draining into the lower tunnels near the Golden Door can only be guessed.
The immediate problem is the exit from the cave since, in all likelihood, another strong tremor might collapse this cave.
Olaf AC 30, HP 55/66 (20% miss chance, 10/adamantium 70/80; prot from evil 4m; nondetection, 5h; stoneskin 79m; barkskin 89m, Bull Strength 9m) Monday May 18th, 2009 9:44:25 AM
Seeing Vayine struggling with the rocks in the way, Olaf rushes forward, taking out some clay as he moves, and shapes it a long tunnel. He touches the stone, and intones the necessary words to enact shape stone, creating a 3' diameter tunnel, about 3' long.

"I would help with one of my forms to dig, but I have very few changes left to me this day. I am afraid that I might need to use them before we get this child safe." Grymash guards the child from falling debris. Then an idea hits him. "I have a potion of that will enlarge one of you to twice your normal size. If the things become desperate, maybe the strength and size of a giant would help create an exit."
A Breath of Fresh Air (DM JohnP) Monday May 18th, 2009 11:04:34 PM
Olaf and Tishe' use their spells to create an opening through the rocks blocking the exit from the cave and Vayine pushes his way through. The rest of the Bloodpack follow quickly since they are all aware of the threat of more tremors shifting the rocks and trapping them once more.
They all manage to crawl from the tunnel and begin to take stock, comparing wounds and thinking about what has happened in the tunnels beneath Rattledam. As they do so, Grymash notices that the Child has slowly changed colour until it is now a pale green like newly sprouted shoots of grass. As he stares down at what was placed into his arms by his god, the surface continues to change, small spots of dark green and brown spreading across the surface until the Child looks like a bird's egg. A very large bird's egg, mind you, but that is certainly what the Child now seems to be.
Another strong tremor shakes the Sargrass Plains!
Everyone is showered with dust and grit blown out of the tunnel by a blast of air, presumably from a collapse somewhere within the cave. Flocks of blind swallows and swarms of insects rise from the grass surrounding Rattledam as the tremors continue to shake the soil underfoot. A long, drawn-out sound rises from a groan to a shriek that echoes across the Sargrass.
Everyone's head whips towards Rattledam in time to see a large portion of the city collapsing inwards, away from them. As the section twists, snapping pieces of bracing and covering fly through the air in all directions. Slowly, seeming to take forever, the wall tips further and further until it impacts the ground. Despite the last echoes of the tremor, everyone can feel the impact - first as a trembling through the ground then as a rush of air that shakes their bodies.
The Bloodpack can see groups of people struggling through the grass close to the ruined sections of Rattledam. Evidently, not everyone was caught unawares or unprepared and has been able to escape from the collapse of Rattledam.
When we next return to the adventures of the Bloodpack, they will be struggling with the aftermath of the Great Migration! Not to mention delivering the Child to the Manfri, where ever those creatures have taken themselves to following the quakes that have accompanied the Migration.
Will Grymash ever unburden himself? Will Yanosh ever get the chance to hold the Child? Whatever will Gilan do with the piles of loot taken from the fallen Ga'alians?
Stay tuned for the next chapter of the Great Migration Saga!
