Deg Shanut

Part One of That Thousand-Mile Journey... (DM Donna)
Monday June 1st, 2009 1:08:32 AM

K'Nara takes a sack from the weapon mage, nodding as she thanks him for his time and trouble. As the requested items are brought forth and delivered by the lovely Mystery, the leader of the Emerald Dragons nods to the copy of the map that they have also been provided.

"What do you think, Ingrge..?" she asks. "We can't get directly to where the map guesses Deg Shanut happens to be...but that distinctive pile of rocks to the southwest of it looks like a good place to center our group teleport, don't you think..?"

On the map, the "pile of rocks" that K'Nara is referring to is a huge stone formation that looks a lot like a snarling orc head.

"There's a road that leads kinda north from there, from the looks of things..." the human blade singer points out, "...as good a place as any to start, yes..?"

Yup that works for me. After that we may need to rely on Argam to locate a possible entry. I am not much for dealing with rocks, unless I am destroying them.

OOC: There ARE more players to this game than myself and Ingrge's player, right...?

Away We Go..!

The Heal scrolls are given into Argam's keeping (OOC: write that down on your CS, Argam!), and Mystery has three specially-crafted bags made of padded material--there is a red bag, a blue bag and a yellow bag.

"Here...these bags contain five bottles each of Displacement, Remove Curse, and Remove Disease potions." the pretty potions vendor says as she hands the bags over to Ingrge. "Uh...respectively, of course...oh, and they have been--as requested--crafted by a potion brewmaster. Good luck on your journey, Emerald Dragons!"

DM OOC: "Potion brewmaster" means that the above potions have been crafted by a 12th-level spellcaster, so be sure to make note of that on your CS, Ingrge.

K'Nara takes the magic teleportation ring and puts it on.

"Anything else you people want or need?" the redheaded warrior says as she glances around at her fellow Dragons. She removes the ring and hands it to Ingrge so that he can don the ring next.

"Speak now or forever hold your peace..."

Argam takes the ring and looks questioningly at Ingrge. He puts it on.

"Oh pass it. I gets it. I gets it!"

How many healing scrolls of what level?

Donna, you're just in time to send out a scathing posting reminder...now that I've posted.

Gunther
Wednesday June 3rd, 2009 1:02:45 AM

The warrior makes positive that he gets two Enlarge Person potions like he asked for previously, and he also asks for a couple of vials of alchemical silver.

As the rings are passed around, Gunther gives K'nara a quick kiss and makes sure that Delilah is ready for the teleport before he puts the ring on his hand and then passes it to Lian.

OOC: Man it's been a long time. I can't remember how we handled getting Delilah to teleport with us.

DM Donna
Wednesday June 3rd, 2009 1:07:03 AM

OOC: Gunther may add the potions described in his latest post to his CS; and there are FIVE scrolls of Heal, scribed by a 12th-level caster as per Ingrge's request (posted on May 31st.) Delilah, I thought, has a special collar that had a Hand of Glory attached to it, right..?

Watch That First Step...

Mystery the potions 'n' notions lady makes sure that the Emeralds have the scrolls and potions requested and then steps back, looking with great interest as the last of the group dons the ring and hands the jewelry back to K'Nara.

"Off we go, then!" announces the chestnut-maned fighter, and she puts the Teleportation Ring on her finger.

POOF!

A split-second of mind-numbing vertigo and the entire party finds themselves in an area that has the tough and sprawling landscape typical of the area of the Wold known as the Scab. As the brief but intense magic effect of instantaneous travel clears from the minds of the Emerald Dragons, the party immediately notes that they are standing in the shadow of a large hunk of rock that stands a good twenty feet or so tall...and that the rock looks very much like a vaguely-misshapen but definitely snarling orc's head.

There is a wide dirt road (perhaps thirty feet wide) that--according to the position of the sun--runs in a southwest/northeast direction. The sun hangs low in the sky...there is perhaps three or four hours of daylight left.

"Everyone got all their fingers and toes..?" asks K'Nara, shaking off the last of the light-headedness from the teleportation and removing the ring from her finger. "I do believe we're supposed to try followiing this road northeast in order to try to find an entrance into the Twisted Run we are to investigate..."

LianAC 41, hps 134

Lian shakes out the cobwebs and looks around. "Wow, nice place. Could use a broom though. Hey, do you suppose the weather will remain nice?" He looks at the nasty clouds over head.

Gunther
Thursday June 4th, 2009 12:50:25 AM

The warrior stores away his potions and then heads out. It takes all his will power to keep his breakfast still in his stomach. No matter how many times he teleported, he never could get used to the feeling. Leaning perhaps a little too much on his dire lioness, Gunther shakes his head and gets his bearings. Spotting the rock formation he grins. "Hey K'nara...dat vould look really nice back at de Castle! Ven ver'e done here, do you tink Ingrge could teleport it back vith us?"

OOC: Nope on the Hand of Glory, but I could get one. I think maybe last time Ingrge just cast Teleportation on her.

DM Donna

DM OOC: The teleportation issue is one that I should have paid attention to, but this is my boof, so Delilah gets a "free ride" this time. This will be an issue on the ED's return trip, however.

Country Roads Take Me...Somewhere...

Since there are no objections and no other suggestions, the Emerald Dragons begin to follow the road northeast.

"Gods, I wish Olana or Falin or Milo were here," K'Nara says aloud with a bit of a reminiscent sigh, "I really miss being able to send them scouting a bit ahead of us...walking this way, any hungry old giant or dragon can just come right up to us and have us for appetizers or something..."

Ingrge watches with amusement as Arham fumbles with the ring for a moment and then redies himself for the moment of truth. He is still taking in a deep breath when they seem to have arrived at their location all in one piece ans alive. Thinking to himself, he again wonders how as a mage he can absolutely hate and not altogether trust teleporting and wonders if he will ever get over his fear.

Ok K'nara let's be off.

Argam
Thursday June 4th, 2009 1:35:44 PM

LIterally checking his fingers and toes, he then looks up with a grin.

"That was awesome!"

He grins around looking for someone to fist bump, but then realizes he's being a newb so he calms himself and looks chagrined.

"NE is is then."

He pauses, then points to each in turn: "Blade, Weapon Mage, Monk, Fighter. Who has point? I assume you're all going to get in a square formation around poor li'l me?

"Forge and stone, I'm gonna have my hands full healing you guys!"

...Suddenly...!

K'Nara is in the midst of retorting to Lian's rather silly "spider sense" comment when everyone in the area is interrupted by the sound of another "poof!"...and the appearance of a very familiar-looking, red-headed, bow-toting elf. The jaw of the Emerald Dragons' leader drops open in utter shock.

"Falin..???" she gasps, unable to believe her eyes.

Falin
Friday June 5th, 2009 5:11:39 PM

Never having enjoyed teleports, Falin looses his footing as he appears and drops to the ground. He stands and dusts himself off just time time to receive the bone crushing hug from his friend Gunter. "I have missed you too." Is all he is able to wheeze out before Gunter releases him.

Falin stretches out his back and arms a bit from the crushing blow he received and then stands looking at the group with a smile on his face. Even though it has only been a few months he looks older. His skin looks paler than you remember and the deep red of his hair looks like it is washing out. He looks thinner and he has a slight darkness under his eyes.

He makes his way over to the group as he meets outreached hands and says, "It is great to see you all again. It feel like ages have past since I was last in your company." Falin eyes the new addition to the group.

He stands back again for a moment and closes his eyes as he takes in a deep breath and then slowly exhales. He open his eyes back up. "It is good to be in open spaces again. I had finished with my mission and had finally made my way back. Sturtavent was informed of my return and had me teleported to Orc's Head Point so that I could catch uo with you."

Falin asks no one in particular, "So, what is it we are doing here?"

He then walks over to the new addition (Argam) and extends his hand. "My name is Falin Darkshine. Nice to meet you."

Falin!! Good to see you. What's going on you ask?

Well, we seem to be on a jaunt to stop an invasion. Which is normal for us I guess, except this will be an invasion of super lycanthropes. Which is scary enough, but apparently if bitten the victem changes within minutes of being bitten. However, we really don't know where they are really located. Which is about normal also, however they seem to have completely conquered a dwarven clan without anyone noticing it and sent scouts into Plateau City.

With a grin, he looks around the others. Have I missed anything?

Falin 2nd Post
Friday June 5th, 2009 8:50:09 PM

Falin shudders for a moment remembering his time as a lycanthrope. He absentmindedly rubs his right shoulder. The same shoulder he was bitten on and received the dreaded disease.

"I spent a long time depressed about the power I lost. I can still remember the feeling of strength I possessed in that form. I can still feel the satisfaction I got from literally tearing my enemies limb from limb." His eyes widen a bit as he gets excited talking about it. Saliva begins to run down from the side of his mouth.

He closes his eyes for a second and brings his breathing back down. He wipes his mouth with the back od his hand. He opens his eyes and you are looking at Falin again. "It was a hard monkey to get off my back. I would literally listen for reports of lycanthropes because the thought actually crossed my mind to get infected again." He looks around at the group, "If it had not been for you all I would have folded to my addiction."

He looks at Ingrge with a smile, "If I start to get weird I expect you to put me in my place by whatever means necessary."

DM OOC: edited for spelling.

A Welcome Re-Addition

Argam's investigation of the large and disturbingly accurate rock formation of a snarling orc's head reveals that it is a completely natural formation--or a very cleverly-applied use of some rock-shaping magic. However either of those events may have occurred, it happened eons ago.

"Falin!!!" K'Nara's voice and expression are surprised and yet overjoyed at the same time. She lifted the Elven Sharpshooter off his feet and swung him about in a small arc before setting him once more on his feet, laughing with delight.

"Falin, you don't know how glad I am that you're here again!" the leader of the Emerald Dragons tells him emphatically. "I only wish it were under better circumstances!" She releases her friend and steps back to allow Argam to introduce himself to Falin before adding to Ingrge's update:

"These lycanthropes seem to have picked a kind of...super-wolverine form for their transformation...and they may already have infected an entire clan of dwarves to their disease. We're hoping to find some way into their stronghold--once we find it. We could use your sharp eyes to help us, Falin."

Hunting High and Low

Delilah does her best, but she finds no recent traces of anything similar to the creatures that attacked in the city.

"We're hitting the road, then..." K'Nara says. The party sets out on foot (as none of their usual mounts were teleported with them,) following the fairly wide road northeast. The Emerald Dragons travel deeper into the area of the Wold called the Scab, and as they do so, the spellcasters in the group gradually become more and more aware of the buildup of a distinct feeling of oppression--as though something invisible were being pressed down upon them from above...and yet there is nothing to be seen or even physically felt. DM OOC: all player characters with spell-casting ability need to roll a Spellcraft check versus DC25. After everyone pitches in to set up the party's camp, the simple dinner of rations and hot brewed herbal tea, and blankets are laid out as the resting places for the ED's, the various members of the group stand their watches.

Who Watches the Watchers..?

The watches set by the Emerald Dragons unearth nothing more threatening than crickets and the occasional call of a night bird or three. By the time dawn breaks the following day, K'Nara is halfway through her usual blade singer training routine. Argam and Falin wake to see the chestnut-maned human dance and swirl her oversize sword with deadly grace. (This assumes that Falin fell asleep at all, of course! ;D)

After breaking their fast and taking care of any other last minute needs, the party sets off along the road. K'Nara tells everyone to keep their eyes peeled as they follow the winding road ever deeper into the Scab. It is nearly mid-day when the travelers finally see something other than the local flora and fauna:

A tall stone wall rises from the earth here. Thick tarps spread gently down from a central post, forming a barrier between the sky and the outpost beneath. Several chimneys rise from the structure. A pair of south-facing iron doors stands closed, and no activity can be seen in the building nor on the muddy path that leads up to the western wall.

The outpost is a circular structure, a good one-hundred-thirty (or so) feet around. The stone making up the twenty-foot-tall outer wall looks quite solid and gives the impression of having been standing there forever. The central peak of the roof looks to be about thirty or so feet tall. The building in the middle of an open area that is about a thousand or so feet around. The plain is bordered by the forest that is to the south and east, and the foothills of the Scab to the north and west.

DM OOC: The structure looks like this.

The party is still within the shelter of the thinning forest, but will have to emerge out into the open in order to approach and investigate the structure that, in all likelihood, is Deg Shanut.

LianAC 41, hps 134
Monday June 15th, 2009 5:24:24 AM

OOC: I'm under the impression the ring is active for a time equal to the duration of the spell. 7 rounds or so. SO Lian would not CHOOSE to be visible at any point but he will time it so that each time it deactivates, he is against the wall and takes a standard to activate it again.

Lian's Recon (Part 2)

The invisible monk manages a complete circuit around the 130' diameter structure, his keen eyes noting that the stonework is solid and the only visible doors into/out of the place are the wide, cast-iron double doors in the western side of the outpost. He manages to make it to a point just outside the only doors when he gets the overwhelming feeling that his ring's duration of inviisibility is about to give out.

The doors are set into the stone wall with a bit of a door frame around them, but the door frame doesn't really stick out from the wall a whole lot...becoming visible here would mean that Lian would definitiely be visible from the dirt road and even from the cover of the forest fringe where his friends are currently located. There are no other niches nor anything near the wall that could even remotely provide cover for Lian.

Lian will become visible right in front of the doors to the outpost unless he chooses to move elsewhere.

Oh, Look--It's the Welcome Wagon!

Gunther, Ingrge and Argam (by virtue of not rolling at all) are too distracted by other things to see what the rest of the Emerald Dragons see: two figures streaking from the cover of the forest towards the doors of the outpost...and Lian! (The figures, although visible, are a bit too far away for the EDs to make out racial features.)

Gunther, however, hears Delilah's VERY agitated voice, thanks to the magic of their wreaths:

Highlight to display spoiler: {'More Unnatural Ones!!! We must attack!!!' Delilah's mental voice is very savage, and Gunther knows that that lioness is referring to were-wolverines when she says "Unnatural Ones."}

This is what's happening.

(ooc: LOL Donna I did roll, and posted it, just not very well.)

DM OOC: Sorry--I was the one who posted poorly. You see, the one who DIDN'T roll was Argam, the last one mentioned in the sentence. Both Ingrge and Gunther rolled (Gunther even rolled for Delilah.) I was pointing out that Argam boofed his chance to Spot something due to the fact that he didn't roll.

Assuming Lian notices, the monk READIES TO ATTACK the figures if they are OBVIOUSLY making offensive gestures.

"They're here!" He says into his ring.

"Come on. Bring it!" The elf looks ready for a throw-down.

To Battle..!

K'Nara's lips compress as she fumbles for her bow.

"Dead!" she says tersely, figuring that if the group can get to the bottom of this mess, they can plead the case for resurrecting victims later--the diminished capacity of the Emerald Dragons at present called for minimizing the chances for fallen foes to immediately come back and attack the group after merely being injured.

DM OOC: I need to know what kind of arrows Falin is firing at the two blurry and very quick figures streaking towards Lian. I am ruling that--right at this momen--the pair of unknowns are 300 feet away from the EDs in the trees and about the same distance away from Lian.

Both Gunther and Delilah give chase to the newly-emerged foes, shaving their Move distance off the 300' or so that is between the EDs and the running enemy.

Ingrge's spell, however, has the most spectacular results: the two running figures suddenly fly up into the air--anyone watching could swear that they resemble a pair of unfortunates who have run off the edge of a cliff and were plummeting to their nasty demise...only these two are falling up.

DM OOC: Kent, kindly email me as to your opinion about how a Reverse Gravity spell is going to effect a couple of were-wolverines who are not going to encounter any sort of ceiling or overhead obstacle whatsoever. I suspect that these two aren't going to survive the encounter, but I would like your opinion on that, anyhow. Thanks!

K'Nara (having leisurely removed her short bow from her pack and snagged a few flight arrows,) lines up a shot at one of the floating foes.

"What, Gunther..?" the redhead asks over the sharp twang of her bowstring, "You mean you have no missile weapons whatsoever..?" The target she was aiming at sprouts an arrow in its body--the entire group can hear the curses being howled by the humanoid pincushion.

Coming Back Down to Yrth

The two foes floating in the air plunge towards the ground, their sudden descent making it impossible for them to avoid the massive damage of Ingrge's very-well-timed Cone of Cold spell. DM OOC: they both missed their Reflex saves. They also both hit the ground with a bone-crunching sort of "splat".

And, miraculously, Foe #1 is still moving, attempting to lurch to his feet.

By this time, Lian, Gunther and Delilah are all within about fifty feet or so of the remaining foe, who is now on the ground.

"Wow..." K'Nara says, squinting at the single foe left standing (well, almost standing--just give him another round...) "...looks like this one ate his Woldies cereal this morning..."

Lion Chow, Anyone..?

Delilah, by virtue of reaching the only moving foe left (after Ingrge's well-applied spells), does, indeed, manage to rip the were-wolverine to pieces. Soon the lycanthrope is scattered about the landscape, returning to its dwarven form as the last spark of life leaves its body. The other, unmoving form is that of another dwarf, dressed in clothing that blends into the backdrop of the forest.

The sun is shining on this otherwise rather gruesome scene of battle. The only movement comes from whatever the Emerald Dragons provide, and the stirring of the grass as a gentle breeze ruffles the blades...

Waking the Dead

Lian casts his spell over the mangled corpse that Delilah left behind. Falin's eyes and ears remain alert but nothing and nobody else is seen (so far.) The ex-dwarf's remains stir and its one good eye pops open, rolling in a macabre fashion before it settles and focuses on the monk asking the questions:

Are you aware you were infected with lycanthropy through the of Black Tooth Venom?
"In-fect-ed...? I've never been sick a day in my life...my late life..."

Was the Black Tooth Venom forced upon you?
"I...I used to be...without power...I woke up one day...with the power..."

Who infected you?
"Again, you say 'infected'...wolverines aren't an infection--they're the natural order of things..."

With those last rather petulant words, the mangled dwarf expires once more, his undamaged eye glaring at Lian in silent accusation.
