The party creeps cautiously into the cavern, searching for tracks, scanning the shadows for movement, and generally getting their bearings. Beren hands over the lantern to Alexi and leads the way deeper into the cavern. The cavern echoes with their footsteps, and there is a faint dripping sound from somewhere up ahead. Every now and then Ender and Caelnin can hear a faint pinging sound, but cannot determine just what it is, or from where it emminates. The shadows move and creep about the cavern as the lantern itself moves, and as different party members cross in front of it.
When Beren has led the party some 80' into the cavern. Alexi follows behind some 10 feet and the remainder of the party stays close to the light with the exception of Caelnin who holds position some 10' further away on the flank.
Without warning, the light from the lantern is extinguished and the cavern is pitched into a darkness that even those with elven vision cannot penetrate. Alexi feels something brush against him and a loud 'plop' sounds from just behind him. Ender is nearly doubled over by the force of something slamming into him in the darkness [Hit AC 21 for 5 dmg]. Whatever it is, wraps itself tightly about the halflings head, squeezing and cutting off his supply of air [Grapple=21 for 5 dmg]. A third 'splat' sounds somewhere from behind Caelnin. Before he can react, Jet is also slammed from above [Hit AC 29/19 confirmed critical for 14 HP] and he too finds his head and face encased in a leathery envelope that squeezes tightly [Grapple=29/17 critical for 13 HP].
Other than the sounds of muffled yells from the party, and the sound of something hitting the ground, the attack happens in silence.

He comes to the conclusion that shooting arrows in the dark is not a good idea and decides to get his longsword out in case something comes closer to him. Caelnin also turns towards where he heard the splat from behind him, as that seems to be the closest threat.

As Ender and Jet struggle against their unseen foes, Keela attempts to cast a light spell to no avail, the darkness remains. Caelnin, Alexi, Fatine and Beren search for their friends in the inky black. The creature that has grabbed Ender continues to squeeze, doing another 8 HP damage to the rogue. Jet manages to peel teh creature from his face and grab a breath of air. The creature continues to struggle against him but fails to regrasp the cleric. Another creature joins the fray, dropping down on Keela and slamming into her [Hit AC=27 for 7 HP]. It attempts to wrap itself about her in the dark [grapple = 17 for 5 more HP].

Fatine pieces together some clues and believes that she knows what is going on, and calls out for a silence spell, much to Caelnin's surprise, for hearing is all that he has to go by at the moment.
Keela tries to activate her wand, but given that her face and head are encased in the leathery embrace of one of the creatures, she is unable to utter the words [OOC take an extra action this round to make up for lost action, or make a concentration check versus DC 20 to be able to properly enunciate the spell activation for the wand].
No more creatures attack, but the darkness remains and teh creatures that have attached to Ender and Keela continue to constrict and cause damage [5 HP to Ender and 8 HP to Keela]
OOC Keela is now at -2 HP and unconcious, so please take the extra action for last round to see if you can escape. Even if mage armor works, the creatures new grapple is 22

The struggle in the darkness of the cavern continues. Beren finds Ender and tries to assist the rogue in prying off his assailant, but the elf's efforts are for not, and the rogue is unable to free himself.
Jet activates his sunrod, but it has no affect. He does not know that Keela has correctly surmised that the area is under the effect of magical darkness. The woman cannot tell him in her unconcious state.
Fatine calls out that they are under attack by Darkmantles and re-emphasizes the option of a silence spell to prevent more attacks before beginning her search for those in need of her assistance.
Caelnin detects a scuffling to his right and moves forward where he bumps into Ender. Alexi, moves to where he last saw Keela and tries to pry off the creature that ensnares her. The creature is strong, and only reluctantly loosens it's grip on the young woman. He know has an angry darkmantle on his hands that tries to ensnare him, but the fighter manages to avoid the attack and the creature falls to the ground.
Only Ender remains entangled and the creature squeezes his victim for another 5 HP

Just then a loud explosion rips through the cave; Jet,Ender and Caelnin make a saving throw versus DC 15 or be deafened for 1 hr. Those that can still hear can detect the sound of scraping and slithering as the creatures make their escape. As the darkmantles move away from the party, first Keela's light spell and then the sunrod appear and begin illuminating their surroundings. Four separate spheres of darkness move slowly away, each presumably hiding a retreating creature. One of them ascends a pillar of rock towards the ceiling.

As Caelnin pulls the thing off Ender's face, the resounding bang surprises and dazzles him. The light returns, and so does his keen sight. However as that sense is recovered, his very sensitive elven ears must've rebelled against the loud bang and all Caelnin can hear is a loud droning that blocks out all other sound that is coming from the party and the cave.
"Hmmmph... This is no good... Hopefully we don't encounter deeper darkness in a while, or I won't know what to do..." Caelnin thinks as he stands back from the party, knowing that he won't be any help as a scout until his acute hearing comes back.

Fatine looks around, rubbing her eyes in the sudden bright light. Feet of Mist snarls at the retreating darkmantles, though Fatine is too slow even to notice them. Once she composes herself, she looks around and sees Keela lying on the ground. Rushing over, she looks to see if she can find the source of Keela's wounds.
If Jet heals Keela, Fatine doesn't do anything. If he does not, she will cast cure light wounds. "Dis spell usooly not be too strong, sister. But maybe it do dee trick." [ley roll 6] [heals 11]

Jet too is deaf, but he motions Alexi to start attacking the fleeing Darkmantles as he tends to Keela's wounds.
Jet is also very hurt, but at least the group didn't lose someone in the first battle for the children. Jet at first wants to bind her wounds and stabalize her. He moves Fatine aside so he can get to her, and in a voice loud from being deaf, "Save your spells and use potions!"
Jet gets out his healing kit to use on Keela next round.

Holding Keela's unconscious form, he sees the scutting dark forms and is in a quandry as to what to do next, see to Keela, or go after the forms. Fatine and Jet come to his aid, so he relinqueshes Keela to Fatine and Jet, then unslings his bow, and fires at the one climbing the pillar of rock.

The party rushes to the aid of Keela who lies unconcious on the rocky floor of the cavern. Jet yells out to use spells rather than potions in assisting the mage, but his own efforts fail, perhaps due to the ringing in his ears, and Fatine takes over, casting her magic and healing or at least partly healing Keela's wounds. Ender quaffs a potion to look after his own wounds while the battle weary leader of the group continues to issue orders despite his own haggard appearance.
Alexi and Beren both fire arrows at the retreating spheres of magical darkness but fail to find the creatures within the sphere and their arrows clatter harmlessly among the rocks. [OOC rolled 50% miss chance for Beren = 30 Fail as the darkmantles have total concealment within their spheres of darkness].
Caelnin shakes his head and hopes his hearing returns in the not too distant future .
Neither of the two elven scouts spot any further dangers and both get a good look at the retreating spheres and the darker nooks and crannies of the cavern that they have retreated to. An examination of the cavern ceilings reveal no more stalactites within eyesight, only the lightly worn path they have been following. It seems to lead gently upwards and towards the back of the cavern, although neither elf can see that far in the dim light despite their superior elven vision. It is a very big cavern.

Beren goes to Keela's side and checks for signs of life. It would do no good to heal a dead body. If she is breathing, he will give her one of the potions, then offer the other to Jet. (I will let them roll how effective these potions are).

With or without the help of the healing kit, Jet stabalizes Keela bringing her back from death door. He grabs a healing potion of CMW that Beren offers and using her natural reactions while unconcious, he gently pours the potion into her mouth. Her subconcious slowly swallowing the concoction until it is able to take effect and bring her back to conciousness. "If we don't kill those creatures, we will have to deal with them again later, so keep trying to kill them."
heal check to stabalize Keela: 26 (natural 20, always when I don't need it.)
If DM's won't let Keela quaff a potion while at zero, then Jet will sacrifice a 0 level spell to bring her up to one hit point, so she can do it herself. Either way, she should be up this round.

A confusing swirl of sights and sounds greets Keela as she awakens. Her shoulder hurts, and there is an odd, cloying taste in the back of her throat. She recognizes the taste of a healing potion and sits up.
"I--oh, where did they go? Are we still fighting them?" she asks, confused.

Alexi shakes a fist at the retreating forms. They are hard to hit singly, but if a wide-area spell could have been use... but Keela had been knocked out... Keela!
Alexi rushes back to where Jet and Fatine are administering to the young wizard. "Is she going to be alright?" he asks, forgeting some can't hear.
"Huh? Say something Jet! Is she gonna be alright?"
But Keela's own reaction answers his question and he sighs with relief. With that weight off, he goes back to pondering how to deal with these creatures.
"If we manage to come by enough shields for everyone, we could travers this cavern holding the shields above our heads. That should do the trick, I would think," he suggests.
Realizing that some can't hear, he says to Jet "We should wait until you can hear" very slowly and mouthing the words carefully, waits for his answer.

Alexi suggests using shields to protect themselves from any more darkmantles, but recognizes that first their leader must regain his hearing and his health. Caelnin keeps a wary eye for further danger but sees none.

She moves cautiously with the others, ready to cast a Web wherever she can catch at least two of the creatures in it.

He picks up his sunrod and looks around really well. What other exits are there? Possible map please?

DM Bob and Carla Monday June 29th, 2009 7:19:20 AM Beren continues in his role of forward scout and elads the party forward, keeping an especially wary eye on the ceiling of the cavern, but there are no more stalactites and those with any sense of caves and rocks now realize that stalactites would not normally be found in such conditions.
The pathway forward leads towards teh back of teh cave, but teh path is littered with boulders and uneven conditions so care must be taken. The sunrod throws shadows from every protrusion and ghostly shapes flit across the rocks as the light source moves. As they near the rear of the cavern it jogs to the right revealing a secondary cavern at least as large as the first. Just ahead, not more than twenty steps into the second cavern, a split in the rocks widens and a set of rough hewn stairs leads downwards into the darkness.

The party cautiously enters the second cavern, alert to the possibility of other denizens that might inhabit these caves. There are none to be seen, a few cave crickets and a mouse attract the attention of the puma but they are not nearly as annoying as the pesky black birs that rides on Fatine's shoulder.
Jet orders a search of the immediate area and asks Ender to search teh stairway itself for traps. The search reveals little, other than the faint trail left by those that have walked this way in the past. There are no secret doors or passages and the stairs, while dark, steep, and uneven pose no additional dangers that the halfling can detect.

The group picks it's way down the stairway, keeping a close watch behind them , and an even closer watch ahead, but other than the physical danger of the staircase itself, there is no immediate threat. Jet casts his spell and after a moment he picks up a faint trace of evil that marks the route they have been following and would seem to lead down the stairs. The descent is long and arduous, but perhaps some 200 feet down from teh top of the steps they arrive at what can only be the bottom. Yet another giant cavern opens up before them, the light of the sunrod does not fully reach to the other side.

Jet steps to the side, in order to allow Alexi in front of him. He whispers in his helmeted ear as he passes, "We are on the path of evil."
Once thet reach the cavern, Jet calls a hold and pulls out the rest of his sunrods. "We can defend here without being flanked." he suggests. He used one Sunrod during the rescue of the seamstress and that leaves him four. He struck one earler and that leaves three unused. He takes the one he has been using and throws it as hard as he can toward the roof of the cavern, to see how tall it is and watches it as it lands back on the floor, to see if anything is disturbed.

As Jet's sunrod sails through the air it becomes clear just how enourmous the cavern is, for not only do they barely catch a glimpse of the cavern's ceiling, but on the way down the sunrod falls hundreds of feet below where they stand. The illumination of the sunrod has revealed them to be at the beginning of a stone archway that traverses the yawning chasm below. The bridge is wide enough for four medium sized beings to cross abreast, although the courage of the outside members of such a formation would be sorely tested. There are no immediate signs of danger beyond what they have already seen, although some may be mesmerized by just how very long it took to hear teh sunrod hit the bottom...

Jet hands out two Sunrods to those that ask and with the third strikes his, holding it above their head. "For once, I agree with Fatine, everyone make a break for the otherside and look for cover. Once over there, we need someone to look for tracks."
With that, Jet prepares everyone for the run across the bridge. he considers the necessity to carry Ender to increase the speed of the group, considering Jet has the run feat, it shouldn't slow him down much.
"Ender my friend, you want to be the lagging member running across the bridge, or do you want me to carry you?"

He still has Beren's lantern, so at least the immediate area of the bridge is illuminated somewhat.

The troop of adventurer's readies to dash across the massive stone arch. Keela wonders aloud as to who would have built such a thing but Caelnin's examination reveals it to be a natural rock formation...all that is left after the stone around it has collapsed or eroded. Like all natural stone it is flawed, and the elf can see where slabs of rock have broken away along it's edges, but he cannot properly assess whether it is sufficiently stable for them all to cross. Ultimately the unseen threat of attack overrides the unknown condition of the stone and the party makes a mad dash across the bridge. The footing is firm, nothing collapses, and no attack is forthcoming. The party takes cover behind some large boulders on the far side and scan their surroundings. The faint pathway leads on further and downwards, irresistably deeper as if the whole cave network draws them on.

Thoughts of wonder fill the elven ranger's head as they continue deeper into the cave. He is already beginning to miss the sun and open skies they have left behind. Oh to be back in the forests of his home, but that is not to be. He has a task to comlplete, and a committment to honor.
With his determination strengthened, Beren continues to lead deeper into the ground.
He checks for tracks occasionally, hoping to find some sign of the children's passing. Something to let them know they are going the right way.

The cavern that the party is now walking through extends downwards and away from the natural arch that traversed the chasm. Jet'sdetect evil spell allows him to follow the faint residual traces of evil that mark the pathway. The sunrods and lanterns carried by the group cast their light across strange rock formations that send shadows leaning away from them. The cavern is quiet except for their footsteps and just maybe... in the distance...is that the sound of tapping? Beren is sure that he hears something tapping rythmically in the distance.

Beren looks for signs of tracks, but sees nothing (track 7!)
However, as everyone settles into the quiet of the cavern, he does hear something.
"Listen, do you hear a tapping noise?"
He tries to recognize a pattern or a direction in the light noise he hears.

Jet calls a hold and listens as well as he can. Attempting to not move at all difficult in metal armor. He attempts to follow the sound and use his spell, to see if they are in the same direction.

The dancing shadows just seem to confuse Alexi at the moment but he does try hard to listen for the tell-tale tapping noise. "Forced labor mining deep underground perhaps?" he wonders in whispered tones.
He shruggs in the dark and prepares to move onwards, shadowy monsters keeping him on edge.

Only a few of the party hear the noise. Beren and Ender can just make it out. tap.tap.tap......tap...tap...tap......tap.tap.tap repeated over and over. If an adventurer puts their ear to the rock it seems a bit clearer, but no louder. tap.tap.tap......tap...tap...tap......tap.tap.tap

Few of the others hear anything and [/b]Jet encourages the party to move along while his magic lasts. the trail he follows continues to retain the remnants of an evil aura and it leads deeper and deeper into the cavern and its interconnecting chambers. The further in they go, the deeper it seems to take them, and with each step, the tapping grows louder. It's rythym does not change. tap.tap.tap.....tap...tap...tap......tap.tap.tapEnder does not know just what the tapping is but surmises it might be a code.

Beren does not know if this is a code or not, but it is persistent. He still thinks they should tap back, but respects the wishes of the rest of the group.
He continues to lead the group. but now he is directing them as much as possible towards the sound. If the others notice, and object, so be it. If they don't, then at least they might discover what is making the noise.

Jet looks down at Ender in an angry manner. Feeling the pressure of being the leader is beginning to take it's toll on the normally chaotic and care free individual that loves drink and he loves whores. Heck, he loves drinking with whores. Yet, a man has to earn a living and he believes in earning it honestly and if it's to take these fellow Bryn Baraz protectors through perils and bring them back alive, that is exactly what he is going to do, or die trying.
Three deep breaths calms him down and he pats the new member on the back to get his attention, he then says with a smile, "Do you really think your good enough to move silently for you, Alexi and myself? Lets get those feet moving friend, they already know we are here, the evil is eluding us."
With that, Jet steps past the two in front and begins to move as fast as possible while safe, using his light source in one hand and holding his sword in the other, he runs just fast enough to where he can stop before he plummets into a chasm.

"Wha...," Alexi blurst as Jet moves past. Alexi looks at Beren and mutters, "he be in a hurry I presume." He then turns to the others, "The chase is on, folks. With all this light and noise, we aren't gonna suprirze anyone anyway, so let's go find this noise as fast a possible."
He then follows Jet as fast as he can keep up, holding Beren's lantern in one hand and sword in the other.

With people starting to run, a wave of confusion flows over Calenin, but is soon dissipated as he now knows that if something is going to happen, he should be there to help protect them.

The incessant tapping seems to have set something off in Jet who begins to run, egging his comrades on. The light from sunrods and spells bounces in every direction as they move at a rapid pace. Rocks seem to literally jump out at them as they dash forward into the dark. Twice the leader of the team has to jump to one side to avoid a deep crack in the rocks, but all manage to survive the dash forward.
Keela finally hears the tapping and is sure that it is a call for help...an "I'm here...please find me" signal but a direct translation of the code is beyond her. She jhas no time to fully concentrate on deciphering the tapping as she too must run to keep up with the pack.
At last they descend into a large cavern nearly completely filled by a body of dark, black water. It's surface is calm, motionless, like a mirror except little light is reflected by the dark waters. The cavern itself is immense, hundreds of feet across and at least 50 ' high. A strip of bare rock skirts around the edges of the water, and varies from 20' to only 5' wide in some section.

Fatine jogs along behind the others, finally stopping at the water, breathing heavily with hands on her knees. "Dat . . . not . . . be . . . stealthy . . . Big Man . . . ." she mutters between gulps of air.
Feet of Mist seems none the worse for wear, and purrs quietly at Fatine's side, every now and then giving a quick look in Col's direction.

"Oh, for Wardd's sake!" Keela starts after the others, becoming a little annoyed. Hurtling down stone steps in pitch darkness strikes her as an excellent way to get somebody killed. Not to mention alerting whoever or whatever awaits them down there.
She doesn't have the breath to explain that, though, so she contents herself with a few more mild oaths as she pounds after her friends and prays she doesn't fall.
