Lenny the Halfling

Naru [AC:14/12/12 HP:5/5]
Wednesday July 1st, 2009 4:48:12 PM

(ooc: Question, is there a crowd of people milling around the street?)

DM JIM-- everyone has cleared out

Valla [AC:16/16/12 HP:6/6-Marty  d100=75 ;
Wednesday July 1st, 2009 8:04:12 PM

wow, this got real bad and real fast too... I hope these mercs arn't as tough as they appear... Valla half sets and half drops the halfling to the ground, figuring that couldn't have hurt him much more than his face plant. "If your refusing to explain yourselves or rather this boy's wrong doings, then I think your hiding much more than what he did wrong. No justice in that skubs! " and with that Valla, muttering quietly in elvish, Casts a murky slick black liquid just behind the first two mercs. It spread roughly ten feet out, making the slick and murky brown mud black, shiny and slippery. All the while readying his quarter staff for the events to come.

ASF-10%, D100 75
casts grease, point of origin just behind the first two mercs. The ten foot spread ending just before Bosk and Ariman.

SPELLCASTERS

Please include a list at the bottom of your post of what spells you've memorized/prayed for that day.

Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7
Wednesday July 1st, 2009 9:01:25 PM

Xeron notices the place has cleared as it does before bad things happen in this part of town. "7 versus 7 I am the tie breaker. Who do I support? Should I support anyone? I don't trust minotaurs. Yet he is willing to find over a thief life. Why does he care? The woman reading the book sound selfish, asking for money and insulting people. The others are supporting the minotaur and don;t even know him. Probably some out of towners attracted by the magical riches of Hook City. They are not going to survive long in Hook City. Will be taken advantage off so fast in Mud Town. Not going to make in there. No street smart. Should have given the halfling. Do I know him? I wonder. Now they are going to pick a fight with these guys. For a complete stranger. Which is probably a good thing to do. I guess I help them. Being good is picking up a fight with other tough guys to protect someone you do not. Will not last long in this town. I guess being good does not be being smart Let's give them a hand"

He start walking to get being the woman on the stretcher, to create a distraction, a second front or may cut the thgroat of the woman.

Acid Splash
Daze

Magic Missile
Mage Armor
Grease

Lenwe
Wednesday July 1st, 2009 10:41:35 PM

I cast Mage Armor on myself. (I intend to cast Magic Missile next on the archer.)

Prepared spells are:

0: Daze, Disrupt Undead, Prestidigation
1: Mage Armor, Sleep, Magic Missile

VALLA & LENWE -- DM Jim
Thursday July 2nd, 2009 5:10:28 AM

Both of you guys have the wrong number of prepared spells for 1st level. Naru get's 3/day because she's an Enchantment Specialist. I didn't see any specialization on either of your CS' so you both should get 2/day for 1st level spells.

Valla just cast grease, leaving him 1 other 1st level spell for the day

Lenwe has already cast Sleep on the halfling and is casting Mage Armor on himself, which leaves him with zero 1st level spells for the day. Lenwe, if you want to and can change it before I post, you may, otherwise, it'll stay the way you originally posted.

Bosk Deox (James) AC 11/10/10 HP 14  2d6+3=10 ;
Thursday July 2nd, 2009 9:31:32 AM

Bosk listens as the halfling speaks. What does he mean getting paid? This halfling is a mindless meat shield for his master. Speaking with him is clearly useless. Bosk places his hand on his morningstar and glares at the halfling. ...to be some ultraviolence unleashed. 1...

Bosk looks back, and believing that there is no one directly behind him to get hit by an arrow, he winks to his new comrades and mouths the word now . As soon as the halfling counts to two Bosk, not looking forward to getting shot at come three, grabs his morningstar and lunges to the left as he swings it at the head of the male human #1 and hears it connect with a satisfying thunk (10).

OOC-Dm Jim.... Are you sure this time? Because when I first made my character sheet I thought the same, and you told me I needed one more 1st level spell, lol... Which it doesn't matter to me, I still cast grease, and have Magice Missle as the other prepared.

DM Jim-- I meant one more spell in your spellbook, not one more memorized per day, sry for the confusion :)

Sanji (Eric)
Thursday July 2nd, 2009 12:10:22 PM

Where to today? Sanji has asked herself this question everyday for quite a few years. Lately, the answer seems to be the same, and so, she stays in Mudtown looking for work. Day after day, she tries to hire herself out to the merchants. Many won't even consider her because of her size and cloth. This often works to her advantage, though. People don't realize their mistake until they view naked steel in her hand. Maybe today will be different. Maybe she will find that special something that has kept her searching for work in Mudtown. Maybe here, she will find some place she can truely belong.

Someday she will lift herself from this status. She has no desire to acquire large amounts of wealth, but only to purge herself of the stigma attached to her. She is a peasant in the eyes of most, an orphan in the eyes of others, and a mercenary in the eyes of those with enough money. She is barely a woman now. No longer a child working as a cutpurse. Maybe these 'gods' people keep talking about can do something to help her.

Already a tussle. This fine morning in Mudtown may yet prove to be interesting. The drizzle doesn't bother Sanji as much as some. In her experience, the rain can wash away things that might otherwise be incriminating. It can also shorten tempers in touchy situations. Does the big one even see the archer? Maybe he's smarter than it appears. After all, who am I to judge someone based on how they look.

Sanji moves closer to the brown haired male peacemaker. This might be a chance to make some more money. All she has to do is choose the right side.

Padre Sixtus Torquemada | HP10/10 | AC16 | Resistance (10 rounds) | Spell List  d20+3=4 ; d20+3=16 ;
Thursday July 2nd, 2009 12:53:07 PM

Sixtus watches the minotaur bolster to full size. He hears the idle words and sees the subtle signs of the arcane doing its work. Licking his lips, he can taste the growing tensions of the area and perhaps of his own ideals being strained. His eyes cannot stop running over the group of guards but always the rest of the female half-orc.

How dare that woman take the lives of the innocent into her own hands? She fires recklessly and therefore believes herself the judge of the innocent people's lives...heresy!

He continues walking along the buildings, hands folded in front of him, smile etched on his face and with fierce green eyes attempting to survey the movements around him through the rain*. Frustration begins mounting more and more as he slowly wipes rain from his eyes.

Padre begins whispering a prayer to Gargul, asking for a more stout body and mind and a moment later the feeling of quickness, determination, and fortitude fills him**.

As he nears the elven woman donning the breastplate and mace, Sixtus scans her for medallions or emblems or any indication of her organization or affiliations***.

Thursday July 2nd, 2009 1:47:09 PM

OOC I got ahead of myself, role to hit is 7... :( Most likely the satisfying thunk is really my mace hitting a mud puddle. Also, I forgot to add my studded leather to my A.C.

Naru [AC:14/12/12 HP:5/5]  d20+2=5 ;
Thursday July 2nd, 2009 2:55:56 PM

Naru ducks down the alley way nearby and hiding in the shadows (although not very well: Hide check 5)

I was looking for a job not a street fight.

She watches to see how things play out. Readying a Daze spell if anyone tries to violently lump her into the fray.

Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7
Thursday July 2nd, 2009 4:23:49 PM

Xeron

OOC: Does Xeron know Sanji or of Sanji? He has been in mudtown all his roguish life.

DM Jim -- sry, you've already posted in-character once for this turn.

No, no one knows each other unless it was written into your backgrounds before the game started.

Valla half sets, half drops the dozing halfling to the ground, which causes an audible groan from the mud covered lad, and then again chastises the gang of 7 about justice and whatnot. Flinging righteous fury at the gang, Valla quickly flings a spell of grease amidst it's lead warriors.

Having kept a bead on Bosk the whole time, Yasimina(red 3) cursed in her guttural way as she was too slow in responding in her attack and fired at Bosk as Valla's spell was released, but missing him by a mile.

Xeron, an intensity in his eyes, walks slowly through the muck and approaches the fair merchant in the litter-chaisse.

Bosk's contemplation of what the warrior in front of him was saying is abruptly ended as a spell is cast behind him and the
archers arrow sails in a shallow arc over his head. He wonders how did she miss? Looking over his shoulder and winking and mouthing the words "Now", he rushes to his left to avoid the spell of grease permeating the already slippery ground, brandishes his morningstar and swings at the human warrior(1) only to find empty air.

Sanji moves closer to Ariman, with a quirky smile on her face.

Padre Sixtus licks his lips in anticipation of what's to come and finds a battle has quickly broken out as he tries to move forward down the lane, invking the spell of resistance that bathes him in reasuring comfort.

Naru, runs for it. Quickly ducking into the nearby alley between the weatherbeaten houses, she plasters herself against a white wall--making her none too hidden.

Lenwe casts Mage armor to protect himself, depleting this spells for the day.

Both of the warriors(1,2) were taken aback by the sudden spell attack, but maintained their stance even though the grease spell threatened to cause each to fall at any moment. The human warrior cried out in anger at being attacked as he drew his sword and lashed out at Bosk, slashing him across the chest(hit AC15, 7dmg). The halfling warrior deftly leapt into battle against Bosk and pierced the minotaurs thigh with a grevious shortsword wound(hit AC17, 6dmg).

Bosk teetered on consciousness as the assaults reigned down on him, in the background he could hear the man in the blue robes casting a spell--thankfully it wasn't aimed at him.

Thorstein(4) wished he wasn't here, he didn't like fighting, he was a pacifist at heart, so he waited. Then he noticed the stranger with the intense look in his eyes coming right for them, He had to do something, and that something was a daze spell directed right at Xeron(DC12 WILL SAVE OR NO ACTIONS NEXT ROUND).

Rhora(5) quickly invoked a magic missle into being and sent it smashing into Valla for attacking her companions(4dmg).

Qillanna(6) raced foward to battle the loathsome minotaur, her mace would break it's bones if given half a chance, and today it would (Hit AC20, 8dmg).

Bosk falls back in the mud, a cry of pain escaping his lips as he clutches at his wounds, slowly dying.

What do you do?

Players moving through the viscous, clingy mud do so at half their normal Movement. Running requires a Dexterity check versus

Valla [AC:16/16/12 HP:6/6-Marty  d100=16 ; d4+1=4 ;
Thursday July 2nd, 2009 7:14:29 PM

wow... this is a lot worse than I thought it was going to be Noticing the minotaur dropping before he could make more than one attack, Thats not exactly lady luck smiling on us... I hope he is ok With one arm wiping the rain from his eyes and brow, UMGH!! Valla cries out as the magic missile smashes into him, then he starts to make his way under the tent. Just before taking shelter he unleashes his own crystal blue missile from his fingertips, with a word in elvish and wave of his hand to invoke his art. He let the energy smash into the same arcanist that attacked him, then taking cover behind some barrels or boxes. Hopefully losing the arcanist in the midst of being slammed by his spell. can't believe the grease spell didn't trip anyone, maybe it'll do more if they give chase" he thinks hopefully to himself. Upon reaching the cover he drops his quarter staff and starts to draw his longbow Probably a better idea to fight from a distance, and hopefully a few others on the street will come to our aid The slight simmer of hope, and being under the tent and out of the rain make him alittle feel better.

Naru [AC:14/12/12 HP:5/5]
Thursday July 2nd, 2009 9:01:36 PM

Naru sees the Minotaur go down. "Minotaur, or not 7 on 3 are bad odds."

Naru realizes her hiding spot is pretty awful and decides it is time to move, and heads further down the alley and behind the building (up and to the right on the map), readying a Daze spell just incase anyone attempts to pursue her.

Ariman's eyes go wide as he sees the minotaur fall into the muck. "Hold!" he asks "hold! Is this speck here worth so much that you'll kill for him? And what happens when this one's clan comes looking for your blood in payment for his? Please allow me to save his life before he should die..."

If he is given the opportunity then he will cast at least 1 heal light wounds spell on Bosk and begin Healing.

You are out of spells, and you need to be more specific about which target you're going to attack, otherwise, you won't attack.

Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7  d20=19 ;
Friday July 3rd, 2009 8:39:02 AM

Xeron feels the tingling sensation as if someone is trying to take over him but he shakes it easily (Will Save DC12 - 1d20 + 0 = 19).
He sees the minotaur swing first then go down and the woman with the book run away "Interesting group of good people. One swings first ending all chances to negociate and another one run away. I did not know that being good meant to act so stupidely.

He continues to walk until he is in stricking distance of the half orc carrying the woman in nice clothing.
"Sometimes you fight, sometimes you talk, sometimes you run .. fighting is now out, time to talk .. before running .... after all how can I do good if I am dead?

"My Lady, if you allow me a second of your time, it is obvious to me that you are the brain and the money of this group. I do not know the tiny brained folks who engaged your mighty powerful group but you surely are giving them a good spanking. I was wondering if you could stop your mighty warriors now that you have proven your superiority. I am sure you can get back whatever the halfling has stolen from you. See if I engage the fight I will attack your porter which will result you geting into therain drenched mud. Not the nicest feeling trust me for a lady of your stature. At worst I will throw mud at your nice clothes. If this halfing worth it?

He smiles at the lady and points to the mud and shakes his head.

Padre Sixtus Torquemada | HP10/10 | AC16 | Resistance (10 rounds) | Spell List  d8+1=3 ;
Friday July 3rd, 2009 11:31:36 AM

Fire flares up in the pale green eyes of the cleric. Three on one, no matter how big the one is, is just not necessary.

"You are done! There will be no more violence to the minotaur! You have defeated him but it is not your choice if he dies. Gargul will decide." The strong words of Sixtus are directed mostly towards the female elf who delivered the succumbing blow. His eyes are piercing and aflame as he stares deeply though the elven woman and the two warriors in turn. He approaches the fallen minotaur deliberately.

"I understand you have a job to do, and you have done it well thus far. Move along and allow me to tend to this stranger who has received the blunt end of you blunt instruments. And YOU!" Sixtus points directly at the half-orc archer, "YOU! How dare you shoot recklessly and risk the Gargul-granted lives of so many innocent people? He knows your fate and he will ask of me to deliver that fate sooner if you are not more careful and harm a bystander."

Sixtus kneels down next to the minotaur, lays his hand with the signet of Gargul adorning it on the minotaur's most grievous wound and whispers a prayer to Gargul* to close the wounds and return life if he so chooses. Sixtus watches as the wound begin to close slightly but his master's wish for the minotaur is ambiguous at best.

"Gargul chooses his fate, not you! Be gone or risk His wrath."

Round 3 Conclusion -- DM Jim  d8+2=7 ;
Friday July 3rd, 2009 3:35:41 PM

Today
My life is mirrored in
A morning glory
- Moritake 1549

Valla continued to wipe the rain from his brow, or was it rain? Maybe it was sweat, for the pain in his chest was awful strong, it gnawed at his muscles even as he decided to retaliate, sending his own magic missile into the chest of the green robed female mage who had harmed him. Smiling in satisfaction that the mage was hurt just as bad as he was, Valla made a dash for it into the safety of the market stalls. Once far enough away, he crouched down and dropped his staff, intent on raising his bow to fire upon anyone foolish, or brave enough, to follow him.

Naru had no dog in this fight, regardless of how she may have felt, the odds were stacked against her and the others that tried to do justice that day, or at least to make a little profit. She continued down the alleyway, fearful of any pursuers.

Ariman was in shock, the prone body of the minotaur lay at the mercy of his attackers. Ari couldn't just stand there and let the creature be slain for such a paltry offense. Crying for mercy, to hold their attack, the cleric of Alemi begged to be allowed to save the dying minotaur.

"I am not a murderer," said Saermund(1), pointing his sword at Ariman, perhaps to impress upon him that he could be next if he wished it. "Heal your friend and stay out of our way and no further harm will come to you, any of you." He spied the others then motioned for his halfling comrade to see to the halfling thief.

Gilbert(2) skipped past Ariman to the mud-drenched body of Lenny the halfling, who was just trying to get up on his own two feet. With a sharp tug, Gilbert helped Lenny up and then placed the tip of his sword just under his ribcage. "You've got something of ours, hand it over and you can be on your way, or, I can end your miserable life and take it anyways." Lenny feigned ignorance, "I didn't take nuffin', I swears!" His answer was unsuitable and was met with a sharp prick of Gilbert's shortsword, "Okays! Okay, geez! Here, take it!". Gilbert took the pouch with his free hand and quickly inspected it to find it was all there. Giving Lenny a steel-hardened look, the halfling warrior rebuked the thief by saying, "It's because of halflings like you that everyone thinks all halflings are thieves. You disgust me, you foul cretin. Now get out of here before I kill one of my own kind." Lenny didn't hesitate; he rushed into the market area, right past Sanji and his quirky smile, then past Valla who had found a lovely large barrel of apples to hide behind.

Xeron felt the spell smash into him, but willfully brushed it aside as he attempted to walk up to the merchant in the litter-chaisse only to be blocked by the half-orc merc with the bow, "No further, or I'll pin you to the ground." She was ugly, not just ugly, but painfully ugly, the kind of ugly that makes you take a step back in fright, kind of ugly. Speaking from where he was stopped, he tries the voice of reason with the merchant, but receives no response other than, "Run along." (if you want to use diplomacy, you have to roll for it like Ariman did)

Feeling that he can't just stand by and do nothing, Padre Sixtus vilifies the three warriors having downed the minotaur. His stern rebuke causes the mace wielding half-elf(6) to blush deeply and the subsequent look on her face was undiscernable--Padre thought she was either going to kill him, or run away crying. Approaching without fear of retribution, both he and Ariman pray to their individual gods to heal the minotaur, who in turn lets out a painful, but somewhat relieved gasp of air as his wounds knit back together.

After several protests had been squelched by their leader, Saermund, the gang of 7 began to back away. They had their stolen goods and didn't seem to want to continue the fight, possibly because there was no profit in it. They quietly walked backwards, and when they felt it safe, turned and went back the way they came, protecting the beautiful lady in the litter-chaisse.

The spectre of death receded from Bosk's vision, the Minotaur was very weak, but at least he wasn't dying. A rather plain lass from the market motioned them over for Bosk to have a seat, lest he fall over from still feeling weak. Once seated she gave the minotaur a large flagon of cheap wine and said to him with one hand resting on his muscled arm, "You were very brave out there, dumb, but brave." She smiled and it set her countenance aright--she wasn't beautiful by any measure, but she wasn't ugly either. "There is no justice here in Mudtown, except for that which you make. If you're dead set on making a difference here, well, you might want to make some friends, better fighters than yourself," another smile, "if you want to live a bit longer."

Combat rounds are over, you may RP freely.

Bosk is at 0hp. He is stable, but incapacitated. Until he is at 1hp or higher, he will not be able to walk without falling over, possibly incurring more damage.

Ariman Couatlfang (Jason) AC 15 HP 10  d20+10=23 ;
Friday July 3rd, 2009 3:52:46 PM

Heal Roll 23

Ariman will continue his ministrations to Bosk. The priest of Alemi smiles at the Minotaur cleric, "It is my most fervent prayer that we can get you back on your feet my friend, I doubt I could carry you very far!" His heart sank as he saw the seven pursuers move past him towards their halfling quarry, mercy must take precedence over Justice, he prayed to Alemi that Justice might yet be served and that these seven might learn the futility of anger and violence.

Bosk is no longer in the negatives, so if you administer to him for another 8 hours (bed rest), he'll recover 2hp at the end of that with your successful Heal roll.

Naru watches as the mercs head off to destinations unknown.

Seeing that danger has passed she heads back to the market to await any potential opportunities that may arise.

Bosk Deox (James) AC 11/10/10 HP -7
Friday July 3rd, 2009 5:00:53 PM

Bosk looks up and nods to the people speaking to him, not fully sure what they are saying. Something about being brave, stupid and alive...alive. Gargul must have been merciful this time. Trying to say something he realizes he does not have the strength. He gives a weak smile to those tending him, and knows he must find a way to repay the favor.

Lenwe
Friday July 3rd, 2009 5:47:21 PM

Lenwe walks over to the minotaur and offers his hand.

"My name is Lenwë Palantír...and that was very foolhardy AND brave of you. Although I don't think the theif was worthy of your efforts. "

I nod to the priest and look around and see if there is a wheelbarrow or something we can use to move Bosk.

"I would be honored to help you get somewhere where you can rest. I'm sure the priest and I may be able to move you."

A Note on the Catacombs -- DM Jim
Friday July 3rd, 2009 8:33:59 PM

I've seen Valla/Marty there asking what it's for. It's a place where PC's buy and sell magic and mundane items to the staffers there, not to each other--that can be handled in game. Access to the catacombs is restricted by the DM. Currently none of the PC's have access to the Catacombs.

Valla [AC:16/16/12 HP:6/6-Marty
Friday July 3rd, 2009 11:06:15 PM

Seeing the halfling warrior stride over to the theif strikes concern in Valla's eyes looks like our efforts ment nothing... Then upon hearing the conversation between the two he curses himself for his hastey actions, Should of let the damned theif take the whole quiver of arrows in the back... Restrapping his bow to his back, and making a crude gesture to the thief as he runs away, he picks up his quarter staff and clutches his stomach, now realizing just how much pain it had actually caused him. Scraping mud off his staff while he makes his way to the minotaur. "Hello friend, your bravery is such that is pretty much unheard of, Im very thankful" Valla smiles as he offers his hand in respect. Nodding to the cleric that is attending to Bosk, he speaks soft and weak "Your efforts are much appreciated also friend, although it actually shames me to know I tried to help the little devil of a thief... My attempt to reason with the gang obviously went unnoticed. Wat do they call you friend? Valla is my givin name, but Val will do..." Feeling exhausted himself from the fight Valla turns his attention to the 'plain lass' that gave them her hospitality for the moment " My kind lady, could you possibly point us to a near Inn, so that we might rest of worn bodies. For the big one here needs it drasticly and it would appeal very much to myself to rest my bones and ponder my book for the evening. A strong drink would be welcomed as well.. He leans against a barrel for good measure, not sure if he could stand much longer. He winces every so often while waiting for the company's response.

Bosk Deox (James) AC 11/10/10 HP -7  d8+1=4 ; d8+1=3 ;
Saturday July 4th, 2009 9:26:04 AM

Realizing that he has become a burden causes Bosk to regret his earlier decisions. Although he would never have felt right giving someone over to thier death without proof of trechery, there was little detested more than feeling helpless...and suddenly he was having visions of a human or a half-elf pulling him down the street in a wheelbarrow. This would not do. As Valla speaks to the woman Bosk places his right hand on his wounded thigh and with the other he clasps the symbol of Gargul around his neck and begins to pray*. As the gash in his side closes up a thought suddenly occurs to him, another had been injured in the battle. He should be helping those who, he assumes, must have come to his aid.

After Valla is done speaking to the woman Bosk says, "Valla. Thank you for your kind words, but it seems you could do with a bit of cure yourself. Allow me to repay your kindness. Then we can enjoy our drinks and thank this woman properly before heading towards the inn."

He then looks over towards Ariman "That's if you don't mind. Please tell me your name and let me buy you a drink."

If Valla accepts Bosk's offer then Bosk will cast Cure Light Wounds on him for 3hp.**
If Ariman accepts Bosk will buy him a drink and pay for Valla's as well.

Padre Sixtus Torquemada | HP10/10 | AC16 | Resistance (10 rounds) | Spell List
Saturday July 4th, 2009 11:04:53 AM

Pale green eyes seem to float over the small assembly of helpless heroes as the tanned human watches the recovering minotaur; he finally catches a glimpse of the Eye of Gargul around the hairy one's neck. Sixtus begins chewing the inside of his lip and allows his head to tilt slightly to the side as he considers the creature apparently devoted to the same god.

He was so quick to judgement...so quick into action...ready to send a soul to the Realm of Shadow without a true purpose...he would be an intersting one to talk with...

Sixtus firmly slaps his hand on the minotaurs shoulder before he rises and nods to him in recognition. After a moment he takes in the others assembled around the near death bed; the human in armor and a white tabbard, the silvery haired elf who calls himself Valla, and the olive-skinned man in red robes. He considers these four with great curiosity.

They had all stepped in to help someone outnumbered one to eight...admirable. Two had actually tried to talk the mercenaries out of fighting...respectable. One had tried to single-handedly take on the group of eight...questionable. They stepped in to do a good deed without knowing the circumstances; they put their lives in danger to help even the odds. It matters not if the person they tried to assist was guilty or not.

Looking the hairy-one straight in the eyes, Sixtus says dryly, "It looks as though you owe our master many prayers of thanks this evening. The Lord of Life and Death has spared you and your youthful vigor." The human's words are a bit off puting as the wisdom in his voice seems to be numerous years beyond the smooth face and young eyes of the cleric.

Sixtus turns to the mousy girl who spoke up, his eyes warm and gentle, "Thank you for the words my dear. I know that this is probably quite a stretch, but would you happen to know the name of the patroness of that that group which just left?"

Saturday July 4th, 2009 1:53:46 PM

Ariman stands slowly, letting some of the muck slide off of his formerly white robes. He offers his greetings and thanks to Lenwe and Padre. He smiles as he sees the magic power of answered preayer heal the large minotaur and eyes the inn across the way. He assists Bosk in any manner that he should need to stand. Looking at the collected group he smiles, "I was under the impression that the southern lands offered few priests or temples but this street here seems to be overflowing with them! I am Ariman Couatlfang, servant of Alemi. It is a strange welcome that we have received in this muddy town. I am impressed by the attempts made to reason rather than butcher. Though, it seems that the way of the heart is not so well known in these parts. There is much work to be done. Come, let us get out of the drizzle and muck and take a moment to get to know one another a little better..."

Very much thankful for the minotaurs healing and no longer in pain, Valla also eyes the Inn across the street, following the lady's gaze. Wonder what kinda trouble we might find in there... This place seems to be a dragons horde of it... Thank you kind madam, if there is any way I can repay you for you hospitality in letting us rest for the few moments and stand out of the rain, just let me know.

Seeing Bosk up on his feet, Valla turns to the beast Much thanks big one, although a few hours rest would have done me fine, and you may have needed the gods grace more than I. Im in debt to you. Valla offers his word in payment of the cure.

Eying the cleric and wizard he begins while following the three to the Inn I agree, lets get out of this rain. May I ask the names of our saviors and fellow arcanist? I should hardly drink with people I can't address proper.. Valla ends his words with a warming smile, or as warming as one of his smiles could be.

[i] I should note these four, they could be help or good company in the future..."

Bosk sees the wisdom in Ariman's suggestion and follows Valla and Ariman to the in. Taking his time to move carefully, he walks with the two men and begins to introduce himself. Once at the in he talks with the two men and allows Ariman to heal him.

OOC I just realized that I misread the DM comment on Ariman's post on the 3rd and believe I had 0HP instead of 1HP and could not have used my healing spells. If this is going to effect game play, could I have a DM edit my previous post, and I will cast the spells after I regain some HP.

Sanji (Eric)
Sunday July 5th, 2009 3:39:42 PM

Well, that sure was entertaining. Saiji's attention is drawn to the man who seemed to de-escilate the situation with his rebuking words. That took courage. The Minotaur was brave in his own way as well. Even though, he might have been lucky to walk away from this one.

The halfling scurries past and Sanji can't help herself. Better luck next time friend. You may want to try some honest work until you can improve on your speed. She gives him a wink and a slightly flurtatious smile and returns her attention to the group of people only a short distance away.

That man... The one with the slightly greying hair. He stopped them with only his words. A rare skill. Perhaps it is time to get to know these folks. After all it will be more likely that merchants would hire a woman looking like me if I were in the presence of more respctable looking folk.

Sanji aproaches the man with the greying hair but first turns her attention to the minotaur. With a shake of her head and a playful, crooked smile, she addressed him. That certainly was a lot of comotion for so early in the day. I trust you weren't hurt too badly. It's almost a shame that this one had to give those folks such a tongue lashing she jerks her thumb to the man with the greying hair, otherwise I might have had a chance to take part in the entertainment. But, I guess it is a good thing that everyone made it out with all their parts and pieces still in tact.

Xeron looks at the half-orc standing in the way. "You could pin me down and expose your back and your throat to some low-life thief. Is that smart? Anyway, I will go my way now that your lady has called you off but remember my friend, sometimes someone will do the obvious simply to distract you."

"I guess there is some good in these people as they did not finish the foolish cow. And the priests went to save it, even scolding them. Interesting attitude. I guess saving a dying person is a good thing, unless the person is bad. Here I go again, confusing myself "

He moves away from the group, listening to them, hoping they could be the group to help him do good. Still watching them from the corner of his eyes, he takes a couple of steps, unsure how to approach them. Then he sees Sanji join the group and the plain woman and he turns away, feeling really uncomfortable around them.
"How I ask these people to let me in? I would probably do something stupid to impress these girls and they would think I am an idiot. Why is it so hard to talk to them?"

He stands there, looking at the group. If they enter the inn, he will watch them from the street, through the window, not caring about the rain.

Amazed at how many people have gathered, Bosk finds himself wishing he had come out better in the embarssingly short battle. Although he enjoyed being referred to as brave, the image of him being hauled in a wheel barrow by a human or a half-elf is enough to encourage him to go inside and rest for a while. Speaking to Ariman he says, "You are right, I should rest and treat these wounds better before sitting in this infernal rain. Thank you for your kind assistance, please let me know if there is any way I can aid you."
(Heal roll 17)

Adressing everyone else he says "Thank you all for both your concern and assistance. My name is Bosk, and while I would like to get to know you all better, standing out here in the rain is hardly the place. Come, let us all move inside and share our tales of past adventure and plans for glory. "Then, turning to speciffically adress the woman from the market he says, "And thank you Madam for your kindness, it will not be forgotten. I would consider it an honor if you would tell me your name and join us for dinner tonight."

After waiting for the woman's response he heads cautiously towards the inn, accepting help as necessary while trying not to place too much of his weight on those assisting him.

Inn of the Poison Frog - DM Jim
Monday July 6th, 2009 12:51:38 PM

The plain looking lass smiles at Bosk's invitation and accepts his offer,"My name is Rain, it was a pleasure to meet you Bosk, and you others also." Answering Padre Sixtus' question, she does not know the name of the merchant who's guard you just fought. She has lived here all her life, merchants come and go and take little to no time in talking to those in Mudtown, mostly keeping to themselves and the guards they hire. Taking your leave of her, you all cross the street, wary of any coaches or wagon speeding down the muddy lane. Once inside, the warmth immediately grasps you like a hurried lover, impatient with it's rough caress. The place is busy, but there is still seating to be had, and so the small group grabs a table in the corner, one with a bench so as Bosk can sit down properly.

A serving wench comes and takes their order, and as the group consisting of Bosk, Valla, Ariman, Sanji, Lenwe and Padre settle in, they note the gossip in the room. It is little more than "When is the next job?", "Know anyone who's hiring?" Curioser was the fact that no one cared there was just a fight outside, although it would have been obvious through the many windows that looked out upon the street. That was when they noticed him, Xeron; a human of average build and looks--the one that had approached the litter-chaisse of the merchant they fought, standing there in the rain peering through the window looking intently at them.

Senses acute, Sanji scanns the room. She listens with one ear to the hum of the patrons*, and to her new dining companions with the other. Her eyes scan the crowd to see if she recoginzed anyone.** She notices the man in the window and quickly averts her gaze. It appears we have an admirer. A playful smile decorates her face yet again. This is far more attention than she is used to. How did that aging fellow stop that fight with words alone? Multi-tasking between making polite conversation and keeping mental notes, Sanji reminds herself to keep an eye out for the Halfling "thief". It would be interesting to know what he took that caused such a commotion.

I hate to be such a downer on this splendidly pleasant day, but I hope that the food doesn't take too long. It may be smart to get back outside soon and keep looking for work. I try to stay in touch with who might be hiring. Sad to say there's nothing too unexpected as of late. Have you all heard any news?
She speaks loud enough to be heard by those at her table, as well as those who may be listening.

Valla embraces the warmth fully, and grateful to be out of the rain. Hearing Sanji talk about an admirer Valla gazes at the human outside. Why stare? Am I that disgusting to him, humans and their quick hatred... I'll sit by for now, but much longer and I'll make myself his friend or enemy. what do you think his intentions are? I mean, Im sure he watched the battle outside, why would he be staring at us. Even if we offended him, or if the theif we tried to help is kin to him in some way, wouldn't you think he would approach us instead of peering like some child in awe? Adverting his gaze to the waitress Valla only orders a strong drink to satisfy the grim events of the day so far. I think it may be a good idea to go where the merchants and employers are, whether they be outside or in another tavern. Some how I doubt people with any amount of coin to spare would stand outside in the rain for to long. Valla reply's to Sanji, but I just showed up in Hook city, if you try to stay in touch with those hireing, that leads me to believe you may know who is, if so maybe I could acompany you to meet them myself. Turnining to the rooms inhabitants and keeping a keen ear and eye for anyone who might be talkin about a job, or anyone who looks important, or rather enough so that they may spend coin for this company's deeds.

You have cut throat yet cannot face a woman stare? You are quite strange since you decided to do good. I say let's go back the old ways, and just thinking about us and get rich out of the fat of the merchants and idiots?"

Xeron shakes his head to silence the voice. It has been hard renoncing his previous life. Being selfish and not caring was easier. He grabs the wedding ring hanging around his neck to help him find his compass. He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath.

He enters the inn and goes near the group. He positions himself in a way that he still has a clear run to the door and also to make sure he will cross eyes with Sanji by accident. He asks the minotaur "Horny One, why did you risk your life saving a thief?"

What would it take before they could begin to consider the needs of their fellow beings? They would need an example...they would need to see how to begin..." Bosk repositions him self to better look at the new comer, and realizes that there are probably many here with the same question. Taking a sip of wine before he continues, he says"I am a Cleric of Gargul, and try to preserve the balance of life and death. Although the death of a criminal would not have upset this balance, it would have looked bad upon Gargul if I had handed a man over to his death without knowing the reason or of his crime. What if he had been innocent? It is mistakes like these that cause some people to fear Gargul and to look at both him and death its self as evil, rather than seeing him as preserving balance and death as a new beginning."

Taking another sip of wine he continues, "My father was wrongly accused of murder and put to death for it, and due to the injustice of it all was unable to cross over. His spirit was seen my many in town until one day a wandering Grim, a mere halfling, assisted him by proving my father's innocence and clearing the family name. It is my goal to repay the favor by becoming a Grim myself and avenging those who suffered such injustice, so that they too may cross over. Further more, it is my hopes that my journeys will lead me to find the true murder and to bring him to justice. While Gargul has not graced me with the gift of diplomacy or the ability to spread his word as he has some of his followers, it is my job to live his message. To set an example, help maintain the balance of life and death, and to one day help those who are unable to cross over."

The warrior were trying to get what is their. You would have killed them because you did not know the crime. Interesting. Confusing but different "

To clarify, I believe in balance...Not necessarily in neutrality. I will try to take the side which I believe to be good. And you must remember that it is the larger shifts in balance that I am concerned with, people who may take large numbers of life without cause. They may very well have been in the right in trying to get their stuff back, and they may have had reason for not telling us more about the situation. But that doesn't necessarily mean that it is right for us to hand him over with out verifying that he is a thief. My actions reflect upon my God, other clerics, and those who would travel with me. And yes, I know it gets confusing."

Bosk takes another sip of wine and wishes he was a better and more charismatic speaker.

Padre Sixtus Torquemada | HP10/10 | AC16 | Spell List  d20+3=20 ;
Tuesday July 7th, 2009 2:28:30 PM

The rain, in all of its pure coldness and seeping ways, penetrates deeply through the layers of the graying cleric. His eyes, a pale green the likes of peridot, continually scan through the streaks of light-licked rain. The ramshackle encampment lives up to its name and with rain like the rain today, it can only remain Mudtown.

After hearing the local woman's response, Sixtus nods deeply, and simply says, "Thank you."

Sixtus eyes the collection of wanna-be mercenaries as they make their way from the middle of the now bloodied mud road into the Poison Frog Inn. There is no reason to leave Hire Road and no reason to waste the little money that was so graciously given to him. Sixtus keeps his ears open, never knowing when who is talking about what*.

The morning was, thus far, irregular to say the least. Sixtus' granted powers had been used, in some part, to save the life of someone who did not even acknowledge him. The Southern Continent has been tougher indeed and the attempts to reach the common folk have often fallen on deaf ears. Streaks of rain lept from his cheeks and chin in one last futile attempt to fly before crashing into the myriad footprint puddles.

I could always return to my old ways. All I need is a wooden crate and I could once again open the conduit.

He shook his head, a sputtering fan of collecting water sprays from his drenched, graying hair. Those ways were done; Ignacio would not have approved. So with a sigh, Sixtus leaned his back against a make-shift wall or lean-to and waited for the next step along his unknown path to be revealed.

Inn of the Poison Frog - DM Jim
Tuesday July 7th, 2009 4:40:53 PM

As Bosk, Valla, Lenwe, Ariman, Sanji & Xeron introduce themselves to each other and engage in conversation, Naru sits quietly at her table, alone. The serving wench who was so quick to take the minotaur's group order had passed by Naru several times without a glance. After several attempts to gain the server's attention, Naru took notice of a merchant sitting in a far off corner near a window-- he is a heavyset human male and looks to be in his late forties or early fifties with curly brown hair, sharp green eyes and a gap between his front teeth. Upon further examination, he is seated upon a floating cushion that has a tall umbrella affixed to it, which is closed at the moment. His gaze seems to be locked on the minotaur's group, but quickly turns as he notices Naru staring at him. His subsequent smile reveals the gap between his teeth as he points first at Naru, then at the group and then motions for her to bring them over to him.

The rain began to pick up slightly as Padre Sixtus remained outside, slowly becoming throughly drenched. Bosk looked on from his groups window at the lone figure on the street--it was a pitiful sight. It occured to the minotaur that perhaps he was one of the men that had helped when when he fell in battle. It was a muddled confusing moment when he hung at the balance between life or death, but in his blurred vision he remembered now it was the man standing out in the rain, Padre Sixtus, that had come to his aid with Ariman and helped save his life. Now that man stood outside, bedraggled and wind-worn from the oncoming rain.

Sanji and Valla, listening carefully to the others in the inn, most of whom we're not trying at all to be subtle or conservative in their talks, heard the same old story over and over again. Most were looking for work, but were not willing to stand out in the rain for it. As the pair listened on, they came to find out that the only law in this makeshift town was the survival of the fittest. This area they were in, Hire road, was the only one that had permanent buildings. As one were to travel further away from the center, a plethora of tents, corrals, and other makeshift structures would litter the area. Also, there were very few permanent citizens of Mudtown, nearly all were transients making a living hiring out to the merchants that would come and go when their shipments had come in or they had something to trade in Hook City.

Ariman Couatlfang (Jason) AC 15 HP 10
Tuesday July 7th, 2009 5:52:53 PM

Ariman sighed as he heard of the lawlessness of the town. It would be easier to spread the good news about the law of Alemi in a town that was acquainted with Law. Under the table he slipped his belt pouch under his breeches, so that he could keep whatever valuables he may have safer. Ariman felt compassion for Padre Sixtus. He excused himself from the discussion at the table and walked out into the rain after the man. He approached, kept a respectful distance, smiled and said, "It would seem that either you are in need, enjoy the rain or are part duck."

Naru [AC:14/12/12 HP:5/5]
Tuesday July 7th, 2009 6:15:24 PM

Naru smiles at the creppy gentleman and translates his hand gestures and counters with a series of her own pointing to herself, then the minotaur group, then to the floating guy, and finally rubbing her fingers together as the universal gesture for money. Upon seeing no indication to the contrary (an assumption on my part) she will walk over to Bosk's table.

Naru strolls up to the group, "Sorry for the interruption, I'm assuming since you were all standing out in the rain, like myself, that you are looking for work? Well, I think we've found some, or more appropriately it found us. If you're interested?"
_____

Description

Naru is a young girl of about 15, and her brightly color clothes verify this fact. All her worldly possessions appear to be stuffed in a small pouch on her belt next to a finely crafted dagger. An ornate leather bound book hanging from a strap over her shoulder, and a knobby wooden staff betray her arcane nature.

It was curious, Valla had not even noticed that Xeron had picked his pocket until the strange man placed the elf's money purse on the table before him. Apparently he had said, "...this is a dangerous place if you do not pay attention," to prove a point.

Ariman - DM Jim
Tuesday July 7th, 2009 7:00:32 PM

As the cleric stood there looking upon the soaked figure in front of him, Ariman remembered a conversation he had with his superior years ago as he was rising through the ranks of a novice. He had asked his superior why he traveled into the seemy sides of town and not into the more civilized parts? His answer was simple: "They have no need of me, they have heard the word, but the poor and unfortunate have not. They have no hope and I am a light in the darkness to them. Be the light Ariman, and banish the darkness where it lives."

Seeing his money bag being dropped in front of him, Valla grows very frustrated, although not as angry as some others might have, knowing the rouge had tried to prove a point. Well met young rouge, although the part of me that might want to slit your throat at the moment, because of your disrespect is held back by the noble side that says your only trying to help me, I hope its not the ladder. Disrespect will only bring you hardship. with a scowl on toward Xeron, he places his money bag in a very secure place, doing so under the table so no one could view, bringing both his pack, quiver and long sword sheaths under also, as to confuse anyone who may be trying to pay attention. Again, your talking to a rouge Valla, you should pay more attention, or find yourself in poverty or bearing a worse scar than the ones you have already, Heeding the rouges advice. At the same time boy shyness and being so timid may also cause situations to be more dangerous than they appear to be. with a smile Valla eyes Sanji. How in all the gods did he snatch my coins, very, very sneaky indeed, I like him... and Valla holds his smile, looking back to the contents of his tankard and draining the whats left.

Valla stands at the invitation brushing past Xeron to stand behind the rouge and wizard, reequipping himself and notes the girls bag of possesions, better hide em young lady, for the rouge here likes his shinanagens... with a smile and a nod toward Xeron, but yes im very interested also, and thank you for thinking about us, and not being greedy. Then looking out the window at the two men standing in the rain, and do you think we should fetch the other clerics standing in the downpour outside? I mean by all means they did help us, and to me their company would be welcomed. Valla hardly waits for a response, then rushes to the door, keeping a keen eye on anything thief like around him, or anything happening to him,* opens it and yells Padre, Ariman, I do believe we found what were looking for, might you come inside to hear the details with us? Valla motions toward him, then paces himself, looking about for who might had summoned his party,** back over to the table to wait for his new friends, for he had no intentions in meeting this merchant alone.

Padre Sixtus Torquemada | HP10/10 | AC16 | Spell List
Wednesday July 8th, 2009 8:36:31 AM

Sixtus watches as the sheepish one starring in through the window darts into the tavern. His eyes follow the people within the Poison Frog Tavern as best as possible but he seems to be more concerned with the activities of Hire Road.

A few moments later and the familiar metal and white tabbard clad human exits the tavern and begins walking towards Sixtus. He watches as his own green eyes are mirrored back at him. He tries reading what those green eyes say before they have a chance to cross the muddy trodden road. Then the man is near to Sixtus and addresses him with sarcasm.

Sixtus nods and engages the man's eyes, "Two out of three is quite good stranger, although I am not telling you which two are correct." Sixtus smiles wryly. He extends his hand and forearm to the stranger.

After a few moments later and the elf with silvery braided hair and several scars marring his face appears at the door of the tavern. He calls out an unfamiliar name and then calls out Padre; a slurry of confusion and surprise smears across Sixtus' tanned face. His eyes widen slightly and his demeanor turns more serious.

"You know my name, scarred one!?" It is unclear if his words are question or statement.

Xeron is taken by surprise by Valla's reaction. "I was just trying to prove a point, that Mudtown is a survival of the fittest. Sorry. "

He takes two steps back.
"See what you get for trying to be nice? You get threatened. You should have done like in the old days and kept the bag of gold for yourself. Being good will not get you anywhere"

He takes the wedding ring hanging around his neck, holding it hard to remind him what the new him is all about.

When the girl invites the group, he keeps his distance. After all, he was never invited and does not want to impose himself. He stays a few steps back, unsure what to do next. He takes a quick glance outside and see the rain and the empty Hire Road. "No one will hire until the rain stops. May be that merchant is the only source of income today. After all, if I am done stealing and mugging people, I need a way to sustain myself.

Wednesday July 8th, 2009 9:12:34 AM

Thinking of the Padre, memories from their battle begin to come back to Bosk. It was his eyes that he remembered standing over him, it had been he who had healed him. Bosk rises to find him when three things happen at once; the pain in his side reminds him that he is still injured, Ariman heads out looking for the Padre, and Naru informs everyone that a business proposition has found her, at which point Valla leaves. Deciding not to head after the Padre, for fear of someone thinking they are turning down the job, Bosk decides to pray once again for healing. Holding the symbol of Gargul around his neck he prays as he had been taught. When he is done only a few red marks and scratches remain.

Bosk nods to Naru, "I think that we are all interested, don't you." he says nodding to Sanji and Xeron. "Wait just a moment while we get the others from outside."

Going over the numbers in his head Bosk goes over the numbers in his head. He counts the four at the table, the three outside, himself and Naru. Seeing Xeron back up Bosk sates his thoughts out loud. "That is eight people, if those outside join us, not a bad sized group."[b/] Thinking to himself again he decides that, so far they all seem trustworthy. Maybe immature, but trustworthy.

Wounds mostly healed Bosk sits a little straighter. As they wait, Bosk examines his surroundings and tries to locate the person propositioning. (Spot check 23).

Sanji (Eric)  d20+2=19 ;
Wednesday July 8th, 2009 4:21:09 PM

Well, this sure progressed fast. Sanji isnt' sure what to think about this turn of events. Sure, everyone is looking for work. In truth, she should probably be waiting outside to try and offer services to the next merchant that passes by. I just came in to get to see if any of these folks had any contacts I could take advantage of and to satisfy my curiosity about the green eyed, greying peacemaker. And he didn't even come in the inn. Normally very decisive, Sanji is having a tough time deciding whether or not to include herself in this fast forming group. She has been taken advantage of before and vowed that it would never happen again.

She notices the average Joe's glances and decides to return one with a slight, and crooked smile. Perhaps this can work to my advantage....

She decides to go along with them for now. This might be the break she was looking for. But a question lingers in her mind. How do I know that I can trust these people? After all, we met only a few moments ago. I will not be duped again. If this goes the wrong way, I'll have to drop the minotaur first.

Putting on a friendly face, Sanji pushes her misgivings to the back of her mind. She dodges patrons and eyes the gap toothed gentleman with a scrutinizing gaze. She listens intently to the gap toothed man as soon as he begins to speak and tries to judge his sincerity at her first opportunity.*

Waiting - DM Jim
Wednesday July 8th, 2009 4:28:14 PM

Naru waits impatiently, she had already thought of what she was going to say when they all approach the gap-toothed merchant, but it seems that two of their number, Ariman and Padre, are still out in the rain, conversing about something, halting their progress on speaking to the merchant in question.

Bosk, almost fully healed now, notices that just after he had finished his prayer, the inn patrons nearest his table slowly removed their hands from their weapons. A skittish bunch, the hirelings that inhabited the inn currently, or perhaps they knew from experience that when a spell or prayer was intoned, there would be bloodshed quickly following it. He would have to remain on his toes, he and the rest of them. Looking across the room, the minotaur does notice a portly man looking their way and smiling, but he was unsure if this was the man Naru had in mind, or he just liked smiling at minotaurs. The group continued to wait until Ariman and Padre joined their ranks.

ooc: don't move others or the group until or unless they're all ready to move or indicated otherwise. The group is still waiting for Ariman and Padre to return before speaking to the merchant unless everyone agrees otherwise or certain individuals take the initiative and leave the group to speak to the merchant, but only Naru knows which merchant at this time.

I know it slows down the game, but I feel everyone should have full control over what their character does and how they move about the game, unless they've been ensorcelled.

Xeron stays there, on his guard, wanting to trust this group that it will help him do good. He found it interesting that the walking cow included him in the group. Is this genuine or is this a trick?

Wednesday July 8th, 2009 11:42:13 PM

Ariman looked around the wet, muddy village and saw mostly adults: hungry, but more, looking for work and action. He saw that this muddy town was mostly just for those looking for their chance. Ariman could do little to improve their chances or their lot in life, but he could hope and pray for the best for them. He wished the poor people of Mudtown well and then remembered his former charge. He nodded his salute to the rain soaked cleric Padre and slogged his way back to the inn to see after the minotaur and make sure that he was healing well.

Sixtus nods in agreement as the man with the white tabbard speaks of his way of life. "I am priest, so to speak, indeed. My life and my abilities are granted by the Lord of Life and Death...Gargul. You are also correct, there is little in the way of temples to any of the gods across the Southern Continent. His word is spread by people like me and his judgment is delivered, when needed, by people like me as well."

Sixtus watches as the scarred one returns into the tavern and casts a sideways look to the stranger before him. He raises an eyebrow and begins chewing on the inside of his lip.

"There is no concealing the abilities which you posses either, cleric. One can tell when another posses similar qualities. Your ability to heal with mundane means as well is impressive. One should never take the gifts of our gods for granted." Reaching in to the folds of his cloak, now draped over the front of him as well, Sixtus removes a wooden eye symbol on a chain around his neck. It is larger than his hand and he gives it a nonchalant rap with his knuckles.

"The eye sees all sir. Gargul sees you coming and going." Sixtus returns the symbol back underneath the cloak and looks back healer. The metal and white clothed man nods to Sixtus and begins to turn on his heel to return to the tavern.

Sixtus clears his throat slightly. "You too stood on Hire Road. You too helped the short-fused minotaur. You are cut of a good cloth. I," Sixtus extends his hand and arm yet again, "am Padre Sixtus Torquemada."

Watching the two clerics outside, I wonder what them two are talking about... Most likely something of Gargul, I some what wonder what the God has to offer over the others, or maybe its just a personal choice in the matter... All is well it seems... the Gargul priests healed Bosk, who was on the same track as I, helping a seemingly innocent, even though we were decieved. Valla shifts in his stance, looking around the pub, making sure he is not to be stolen from again* At the same time, the solmn one deprives himself of the warmth of the pub and even at the note of work, which Im sure he needs, doesn't come inside... Maybe he's not in need of the work... Then why else would he be standing on Hire Road... To spread his word maybe? Ahh... don't be silly Valla, no one would want the word of a priest on Hire Road, maybe the nobles of the Inner City, but surely not the despicable beings in this muddy square.... for fear of driving himself insane Valla looks for something else to occupy his attention, and sure enough, the young wizardress starts talking, and as Valla nods in agreement, she walks away... Also noting the white cleric moving inside, Valla starts to follow Naru, while attempting eye contact and motioning the other priest to come inside quickly...

Sanji's defenses are up. She hopes that she is able to mask the apprehension that is screaming in her mind. Such acceptance can be risky. Perhaps it is time to take a few more risks of my own. The colorful one is right, though. Any work opportunity should be taken advantage of. Privately, she hopes that the greying cleric decides to come inside. She still has a few questions for him regarding his performance earlier.

She positions herself opposite the average joe, trying to stay within his line of sight. This gathering has the potential to draw the attention of many of the patrons. Sanji scans the crowd with, always yearning to hone her skills, looking for anyone taking outside of her new "friends" who has taken interest in this meeting.*

She's been alone for too long, trying to scratch out a living in this muddy, damp town. Again, the thought enters her mind that this could be the change she was looking for. Dare she hope? Sanji gives her head a slight shake to clear her mind of all the different thoughts and ideas trying to speak at the same time. She needs her wits to be as sharp as her blade. The thought of steel causes her hand to stray to her rapier's hilt. Now, lets find out what this job is. Hopefully, it will be the type of work that can still be conducive to a long life. If not, she might look elsewhere.

Will have the same ammount of luck inside on a day like today; none. I have been here all morning...no one has come.

There is an audible sigh as Sixtus begins following the man in to the tavern. As they reach the steps Sixtus retorts slightly, "And for the record, I do not particularly like the rain."

Sixtus, upon entering the Poison Frog Tavern, sees that a few of the mercenaries who were involved in the fiasco are now piecemealed together. He heads for the bar, slides a few silver pieces along the countertop and looks at the bartender.

"Something cheap and warm please...but not necessarily in that order." He flashes a smile at the bartender and examines the one serving him. After receiving the drink, Sixtus turns his back to the bar and rests against it, sipping his hot something and surveying the patrons of the tavern*.

Who will claim the moral mantle? Who will be the joker of the group?

He does not worry about his role, expecting that if they accept him in the group, he will be the no-name grunt. He knows can rely only on himself for survival and success. His eyes meet Sanji's and he looks at her for a couple of seconds before looking the other way. She is a rogue like me, probably haunted the same streets I did and went after the same victim. I wonder why she left that life of crime. Is her past as sad and dark as mine? With the wise and charismatic people around her, does she even know he exists?

Clearing his throat after a rather potent sip of his toddy, Sixtus looks over to where the ginger-haired girl covered in motley stands. He scans her for a moment, noting the youthful vigor and seemingly adolescent demeanor. Sixtus' eyes grow warm and gentle and he allows a small smile to soften his face.

Pushing himself away from the bartop, Sixtus stands to a full upright position over six feet in height. He takes another sip from the steamy glass mug, savouring the warmth of the alcohol as it melts its way down the back of his throat; his eyes close in the relishment.

As he opens his eyes, they appear to have changed slightly; the look is either more matter-of-fact, more serious or more interested. Sixtus nods slightly to the child and says, "I may be indeed, young one. I would need to know what the job is, who I woul dbe working with and if I could trust that they not make rash decissions in the future though." His pale green eyes flash across the conglomeration of adventurers.

Done with his pondering, Valla makes his way over to Naru and the greying cleric my good sir, I think it is time you've made your decision, would you see what this merchant wants with us? Or do you prefer standing on hire road alone? Much of the group is getting impatient, and maybe the merchant too.... Would you let the man wait so long, only for him to choose another group to do his bidding? I for one cannot pass up a chance at gold he looks to Naru when your ready little wizard, I'll follow you to the merchant, you never know who's going to walk through the door next, and it may be a peoples better suited for his job than we are." With that Valla glances around the tavern again, heeding Xeron's advice.

Saturday July 11th, 2009 10:48:53 PM

Seeing Valla leave to speak to the cleric causes Bosk to become slightly concerned. Surely this gentleman will not wait indefinitely, having most likely seen the cleric informed multiple times of his offer. What if he considered such a dismissal an insult and took his business elsewhere. Perhaps he should say the cleric likes to stay back and keep an eye on the group in case of treachery...but if that were so it should have been said earlier and Naru and Valla would not have left and spoken to him again. Would it be to the groups detriment if he let him know they had only just met? What he really wanted to do was to speak to the cleric. As another Cleric of Gargul, probably having followed him longer and having just realized the cleric had come to his aid, he had many questions and a strong desire to thank him despite his growing annoyance with the delay. However these questions would have to wait until later. Bosk had been raised with the knowledge that it was rude to leave a prospective employer waiting, let alone to leave him all together. The best thing he could do at the moment was to stay with the man and hope the others joined soon.

Ariman considers to himself, "It would seem that the passageway to civilization and people in need is by means of men and women who journey into the city of Magic. I will need to work with this man or a person such as he in order to find a way into Hook City." Ariman steps up closer by Sixtus, "I work as a healer and am a priest of the god of Alemi. I offer my services as a healer and the magic that I amy call upon as a priest to assist you and your mercenaries..."

Sanji (Eric)
Sunday July 12th, 2009 11:03:59 AM

Sanji is nearly overwhelmed by the situation. Joy at the prospect of having work again. Apprehension because of the speed at which this all seemed to come together. Caution toward this strange group of people who seem very accepting. Calming herself, she glances toward those standing on the outer edges of the ever growing group in front of the merchant. She gances toward the greying cleric as he is speaking to someone else. If he meets her gaze, she will flash her crooked smile and give a beaconing nod. If he comes over, that could open the door to a conversation that she has been itching to have. If not, that means more money for her. Looks like a win win situation.

She looks at her surroundings and reminds herself not to spend too much money. She needs to save what she makes to get what she needs. I will not always look like this. Soon I will find a way to elevate myself above my current state. No longer will I be forced to wear ragged peasants clothing. People will stop looking at me like a wretched begger.

"That is an understandable position, but this is Mudtown and you will never get those kind of assurances. And from what I've seen being picky leaves you hungry, especially if you don't even go to hear what the job entails. Follow me if you want, but personally I need a sandwich."

Naru walks back over to the gapped tooth merchant.

"This would be an easier sell if I knew what the job was, or at least your name."

Monday July 13th, 2009 9:35:09 AM

Xeron's face does not change as he hears Padre and the girl. He is now on his guard, his natural distrust of other in full bloom.

He hears about, money, riches, eating, even the spoiled brat mentioning Mudtown like she knowns it. No one is talking about doing good. If it was only about money, he would have stayed a thief. He is surprised the other rogue seems accepting too.

Xeron looks for a sign that joining that strange conglomeration of people would be for good. The old man seems to have some requirements about who he associates with. May be if he expends his standards, Xeron can find out if the Padre is all about good. The rest of them have clearly indicated that it is about the gold and nothing else.

Padre Sixtus Torquemada | HP10/10 | AC16 | Spell List | [Drew]
Monday July 13th, 2009 11:59:18 AM

The green eyes from the youthful cleric with the graying hair lock onto the ocean blue eyes of the scarred elf. Sixtus chews the inside of his lip a little, never breaking eye contact, while he considers all that is being said.

"Listen, elf. Your impatience will be your eventual downfall. As for the matter of me joining your so called group, I will make my decision on taking the job once I have heard what the job is. Had there been another group looking for work in this tavern, I am sure that they would have already been hired by this man...no other group has entered this tavern since the little debacle in the street only mere moments ago." There is no tone of bitterness or harshness in the tan human's voice, just emphasis on his points.

Padre nods past the scarred elf to the merchant, indicating that he is ready to hear what the merchant has to say. Sixtus looks at the ginger-haired girl as she continues talking to him. "We do indeed sit on Hire Road looking for work. No work found us there. Gargul's will almost took the minotaur though and that is less than a desirable omen for the future of our associations. If you would like a sandwich, little one, I will buy one for you."

The face of cleric looks smeared with concentration, deep thought and slight annoyance with the desperation that infects a lot of the gypsies of Mudtown. Things are mighty poor in Mudtown and the circumstances seem to infuse those who have been around a while with either hopelessness or desperation. Sixtus smiles slightly, thinking himself lucky to not have been here too long.

His eyes look around the collective mercenaries. He notes that little has been said from the mousy peasant girl and the black-haired boy. He looks at them with a slight smirk on his face.

Clearing his throat, Sixtus addresses the portly man on the floating cushion, "My name is Sixtus, sir. This girl," Sixtus nods to the teenage girl in motley clothing, "and the elf here," he extends an open hand, palm facing upwards to the elf with scars across his face and exposed arm, "seem to think that you have work for those of us who are interested. Is that the case, Master Merchant? Some of us need to work out of necessity and others out of a sense of doing something purposeful."

Sanji (Eric)
Monday July 13th, 2009 2:27:14 PM

He came over. Good. Maybe I will have a chance to question him yet. I guess this also means that my share of what ever this job is will be a little smaller. I hope it's worth it. Now that some of these folk seem to have been successful in wrangling the greying cleic toward the merchant, maybe we can get down to business. Maybe it's time to throw in my 2 cents. Indeed, sir. It would be nice if you did have some work for us. Any chance one has to find work without having to wait in the rain is a treat.

She flashes the crooked smile that has been a favorite of hers as of late and paciently awaits a reply. The only thing she knows deep down for sure is that she can not trust these people yet. She has only known them for moments and one of them nearly got himself killed. Trust is a strange thing for Sanji. Perhaps it will always be something she refuses to give. As the small group of would be workers begin to cluster closer to the merchant a thought tickles the back of Sanji's mind: Only in Mudtown...

Naru [AC:14/12/12 HP:5/5]

Time jump: In response to Padre's offer of the sandwich, "I would rather you come listen to the job offer, as he is waiting for you before he will tell us what the job is.Then I can buy myself a sandwich. But my teacher did use to say give a man a fish and feed him for day, hire the man to do your fishing and you can continue your studies while he gets you fish. So upon further thought, yes, you can buy me a sandwich if you like while we go on the job. Then if you like I'll hire you to get me sandwiches with the money, if that is the job you desire."

*Naru will continue back the merchant as previously stated*

Look straight ahead. What's there?
If you see it as it is
You will never err.
-- Tokusho 1387

"Greetings, one and all, please have a seat and a drink on me." The merchant motions for everyone to have a seat and calls over the serving wench, who comes quite hastily and begins taking everyone's order, so that he may begin. "My name is Venbolio Penn, a merchant of quality spell components. If it is plant, animal or mineral, I have it in stock. I own a shop in the City of Magic, but the rules of the city say that I must wait until my newest shipment is assessed for its worth and for the taxes I must pay. Assessments are done in a specific order, and so I must wait in Mudtown until my assigned number is called by the guards at the gate. Meanwhile, my caravan is camped here in Mudtown, where there is no law except that which is enforced by the men-at-arms I hire. I take it you are all looking for work?"

Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7

Xeron listens in silence. When the waitress asks him what he wants, he motions her silently that he does not need anything.

"The rogue one appears to be quite trusting. She must be putting on a show. Quite crafty I must admit. I need to make sure I never leave my back to her. The spoiled brat is obnoxious and disrespectful. Typically of newcomers. Mudtown will teach her"

He stand there, against the wall, still making sure he has a straight path to the exit door.

When the merchant asks if they are looking for work, he says nothing. "Is this what doing good i all about? Protecting some magical stuff? Stealing was easier. I guess, what is the word, ... honesty is a lot of hard work. How is working for that guy protecting his stuff better than stealing for me? Not sure. oh no ... being good is so hard and confusing. I did not think I had to be ... what is that word ... honest. It truely is a sucker's bet. " He grabs the wedding ring hanging from his neck. "but honest I will be as I promised to her. I said I would do good and help other. I guess I would be helping the merchant."

He stays there, silent still unsure why he is not going back to stealing.

Thought bubbles - DM Jim
Monday July 13th, 2009 10:09:29 PM

ooc: when it comes to thought bubbles, you can pretty much think any way you want to, as long as it doesn't incorporate information your character does not know. However, remember no one likes to be thought of badly when they're not trying too, so making an attack, or being rude via a thought bubble isn't likely to win you any friends nor is it going to make the game enjoyable for most involved.

If you want to use thought bubbles, etc, concerning other players, don't make it personal.

Standing with feet shoulder width apart and both hands clasping the top of his quarterstaff, Sixtus watches Venbolio with great consideration. He looks for shifty eyes, fidgeting hands, stuttering and a restless body while the proposition is given, trying to determine how true the merchant is*. His pale green eyes battle the piercing green eyes of the possible employer as he tries delving into any hidden intentions or crucial information that may be withheld.

Sixtus places his chin on top of his hands, as the staff is a convenient height, and watches the rest of the gathered mercenaries out of the corner of his eyes.

"One week? Five Hundred gold? We protect the goods and your people. Who are your people Master Penn?"

Penn cocks an eyebrow, and then makes a shake of his head at someone beyond Xeron,"Be careful son, drawing a dagger in such a manner with so many twitchy fingers about, well, someone could get the wrong impression." Smiling, he continued, "I saw the confrontation outside, anyone who would come to the aid of a perfect stranger, well, I doubt they would allow their employer to be robbed by the very people he had entrusted to protect him. Startled by the knife Bosk places his hand on his morning star and begins to step between Xeron and the merchant, however before he can complete his action it becomes clear that Xeron is not about to attack. Taking his hand off his weapon Bosk remains somewhat between and to the side of the two until the dagger is replaced. Bosk thinks to himself, I am glad that Mr. Penn took such actions in good humor. Although I do not know him well yet, our employer seems a decent enough man. Still, I would like to know what his cargo is.

Glancing at Xeron, Bosk cannot help but to wonder about his motives for his actions. By the Eye of Gargul, I don't understand that guy. Is he trying to scare or intimidate our employer? But why would he do such a thing, surely his offer is generous enough? Perhaps he is afraid of being double crossed, perhaps this is just part of Mud Town culture. Peolpe never act right when the balance of good and evil are not maintained.

"Tell me Mr. Penn, when would you like us to begin this job."

Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7

Xeron notices that the minotaur was getting ready to intervene when he pulled out the dagger. "Interesting person. He nearly died protecting a thief and was ready to intervene when he felt I threatened the merchant. This is quite good behavior. May be it is okay to be with that group after all. Some of them might be after good after all.

He looks at the merchant Did not mean to startle you or intimidate you sir, but I have seen naive bahvior today and sadly, as a Mudtown native, I can tell you that there is a lot of deception around. Given your offer, I wanted to point out to you that not every one is motivated for good. You are the employer. If you pay me to protect the cargo, I'll do it and will take whatever step I need to take to keep it safe. But I have learned to expect the unexpected here in Mudtown and sadly I have never been disapointed. Between threachery, dishonesty, switching allegiance and plain wrong-doing, it is tricky place to do business. I just wanted to make sure you knew what viper nest you were in."

ANd then for the first time since he met that group, he smiles. The smile is short lived but does enlighten his face a little.

Sixtus' eyes soften and a faint smile creeps across the corners of his lips. Lifting his chin off of the top of his staff, the tanned man pulls himself to full height, a few inches over six feet, and nods to the portly man. He looks over at the minotaur, the black-haired human who produced the knife, the brightly clothed ginger, the cleric of Alemi who showed patience, the homely girl in rags, and the scarred elf. Chewing on the inside of his lip, Sixtus nods to Venbolio.

"Master merchant Penn, it would be unwise for me not to take this job. Your payment can go a long ways here in Mudtown. Sometimes doing what is necessary trumps the ideals that one tries to live by; Gargul's power is the quintessential example of that balance. And by taking your job, if your caravan or your people are attacked and it was defended adequately, then those of us who sign on indeed have done some good."

Sixtus lifts his steamy glass of toddy to the merchant, nods and takes a sip. Closing his eyes, Sixtus relishes the burning heat on the back of his throat.

"I must say, though, that I too am interested to know where your caravan is and when you would like those of us who sign on to begin."

Sanji (Eric)  d20+4=23 ;

Sanji crosses her arms into a comfortable position and tilts her head slightly to the right. She thinks back trying to recall other jobs she's heard of and how much they paid. Is this a fair price?* Many of the others seem to think it is worth taking this job. The merchant seems to be awefully generous with what he haves. I suppose he could just be a kind hearted person.

Ah, an intelligent question: Where is the caravan and when do we start? These folk do seem to have some intelligence. Well, it's not like I need to beat away possible employers with a stick. Perhaps I should take this job as well. If nothing else, it should be entertaining. It seems like some in this motley crew don't entirely see eye to eye. Such is the case when folks first meet.

Flashing a crooked smile, Sanji lifts her right foot onto a chair and rests both of her arms on her raised knee. The job deffinately is appealing. I'm thinking we can do business. When we are in your employ, are you the only one we will have to answer to, or will any of you people be given authority to direct our actions?

"Oh my, please forgive me, where was I? Oh yes, Mr. Bosk, I would like the lot of you to start immediately, say, right after we are done here? All of you who accept can follow me to my caravan and get the lay of the land.' Then turning, he replies with a smile, "This isn't my first rodeo, Mr. Xeron, but thank you for that bit of advice. Finally answering Sanji's question, "Yes, you'll be under my direct supervision, that's the way I like it." There is no more valid reason not to take this job.

Sixtus extends a hand to the portly man. This is the first time that anyone has seen the cleric's hand and the palm and back is covered in a strange pattern of black ink.

"Master Penn, I will do everything in my Gargul-given powers to protect your caravan and your people." A fierce look flashes over the cleric's face and his grip on the merchant's hand doubles. "Mudtown has never seen the likes of me before."

As he releases his new employer's hand, Sixtus' eyes return to their pale hue and his face softens back to the normal, youthfully wise demeanor which he wears on a regular basis. Pulling back up to his full height, Sixtus bends backwards and snaps his body suddenly to the left and the right; several cracks and pops make themselves known as he snaps his body back into place.

The tanned man steps back, allowing the others to do as they wish with the merchant. He pulls the hood from his pale green cloak over his head and says, "Excuse me, but the waterfowl in me wishes to breath fresh air. I will be waiting outside."

Hearing Sanji speak, Bosk looks down at her as she places her foot upon the stool and asks her question, "When we are in your employ, are you the only one we will have to answer to, or will any of you people be given authority to direct our actions?" Bosk thinks to him self, That is a good question. It is good to see that this group knows what type of questions to ask. Which reminds me, he still has not answered the question as to the location of his caravan yet, perhaps that is not something he wishes to broadcast in this type of establishment.

Looking over his new comrades Bosk realizes that in most likely hood there are at least four magic users if not more (assuming everyone agrees to the job), at least three of who are clerics. He makes a mental note to speak to them so that they can stagger their meditations and spell preparation.

As Naru speaks about her sandwich Bosk gives a slight cough and covers his mouth, however anyone looking closely as he draws his hand away would notice that the corners of his mouth have raised up ever so slightly. Something which Penn's joke had not managed.

Bosk gives one final look around the bar and attempts to see if anyone is listening in on their conversation. (Spot check 8). Then, speaking to Penn he says, "Would it be alright with you if we meet a little later in the day? That would give everyone time to eat, gather their things, and set straight their affairs for the next week. I myself need to thank a woman who showed me kindness after our battle and whom I promised dinner. At the very least I would need to arrange to have dinner with her at a later date."

Well, this could be fun. I'm in. Sanji Rameid is what I am called. Thank you for your considering this interesting gathering of folk for employment. Sanji resumes her cross armed pose and signals for the serving wench to come over. No use going to work on an empty stomach.

She returns her gaze to the group gathered near her. Does a threat exist in this group? These seem like friendly enough folk, but one can never be too careful. It truely does seem like the greying man enjoys the rain. But, I guess we all have our own special quirks. Again, who am I to judge.

One thing is for certain, we all do need the work. Hopefully, this will turn out to be a profitable situation. And who knows, possibly a reacurring situation.

The girl smiles and then sets back to devouring her meal.

Venbolio Penn - DM Jim
Thursday July 16th, 2009 4:24:58 PM

Penn seemed a little perplexed at the minotaur's request, "Excuse me, as I do not wish to seem impertinent, but this talk of seeing to your personal matters, were you not on Hire road looking for gainful employment? If you are not ready to be employed at a moments notice, then, why are you here? I do not mean to be rude, but I could hire just about anyone here, and they are all ready to work--which is the reason why I'm here, certainly not for the food..." Looking to Naru, "...and that was not chicken, my dear." Looking back at Bosk, "I have need of you now, and you will certainly have a break or two during this next week, but if you are not ready to leave, then state as much and I will find another to replace you."

Valla eyes Naru at her sly jokes, "very clever little one, berry's and apples travel well too I might add. They also taste much better than meat. Or at least in my opinion, Id prefer to live off the plants of the wild, rather than the animals... Unless of course I witness the death of the beast. You never know what kind of ingredients these tavern owners throw in their meals..." He stresses the word ingredients to warn Naru of caution. mudtown is a forign place, and I should treat it as a hostile place... Its proved as much already anyways. The young one here may become a rival, although she seems too kind, or perhaps naive, to bring any backstabbing danger, or maybe I underestimate.... Only one way to find out.....

Valla looks to Mr. Penn, well, Mr. Penn, I agree with Sixtus there, nodding to the door the cleric walked through its a bit crowded, with people not to my liking, in this wretched tavern, I'll take my leave also. I'll be outside waiting for you. Although I am very eager to start this job, I hope you don't keep me waiting for too long." Valla offers a warm smile, or as warm as he can possibly look, and makes his way outside, and to the far edge of the tavern wall. He leans his back and props one leg against the wall. And waits...

As the cool air washes over him, Sixtus throws the hood of his cloak over his head, letting it fall down the the ridge of his brow. The rain was a refreshing relief from the crowded stench or food, alcohol and smoke. After finding a place that seemed relatively sheltered from any wind gusts, Sixtus begins scanning Hire Road, completely interested in the comings-and-goings of its inhabitants*.

Looking to the pewter clouds lingering like a bad omen, Sixtus shakes his head, sighs, and mutters, "...work is work at this point. I could be back on top of a wooden box..."

After a few moments of frustrated thoughts, Sixtus throws his hood back and lets the rain cool him off; he relishes the water running down his face and over the back of his neck.

Looking at Penn and using his most professional tone Bosk responds "I have made an agreement with you, if you have need for me now then I am both ready and at your service.
After giving a slight bow of his head, Bosk turns and speaks to the bartender. If a woman named Rain should come looking for me, let her know that I have found some employment and with luck should be back later in the week." Placing a few coins on the bar he says, "This is for her meal, and a drink for you for making sure she gets her meal...do I make myself clear?" Bosk stands a little taller hoping to further pursuade the bartender theat it would be in his best interest to make sure Rain gets both dinner and his hessage, but at the same time trying to ensure that no one could think that he is trying to pick a fight. (7+1=8). With bussiness taken care of to the best of his ability Bosk says to the groups "I too will take my leave and wait outside until you are ready. Thank you again for this opportunity." Standing in the pouring rain isn't exactly Valla's idea of a good time, but the crowded tavern held to many unknown dangers, mostly thieves, for him to stay. He hoped the merchant didn't take this as some kind of insult. Eyeing Sixtus giving in to the elements he attempts at conversation with the cleric, Almost yelling Like the rain do you?" Valla walks a bit closer so he doesn't have to talk so loud. Got off on the wrong foot I think... Smiling now, and extending his hand, Valla Crudarian, priest. Scarred One, Elf.... Seeing the 3 leave the inn, Sanji takes a seat next to Mr. Penn. Her short hair begins to stick out in several directions as the rain is dried out of it. So, how often are you in need of these kind of laborers? If this is a regular occurance, I would be happy to offer my services in the future as well. Provided, it is, that I survive this sortie in Mudtown. That crooked smile flashes again. She is getting rather fond of that. I am ready to move out when you are.

The situation has progressed nicely. But, I'll have to make a lot more money in order to buy the first item on my list....

Sixtus looks over as the minotaur exits [i]The Poison Frog Tavern, nods and looks towards the heavens once again. The rain cascades into his face and hair and as he begins running a hand through the graying-brown mop, the elf exits the tavern as well.

As the elf exits and addresses the cleric, Sixtus looks over, allows a smile to creep through the corners of his lips, and nods to him. "Actually, I am part duck, Valla." A large wink mashes his right eye. "I am padre Sixtus. I hope that the way that I have addressed you was not offensive. I can only call it as I see it. I take it you have signed on with Master Penn as well?"

The demeanor seems more relaxed with the cleric now; perhaps the guarantee of work and pay, perhaps the soothing coolness of the rain. Whatever the cause, Sixtus' eyes cast a warmer gaze to those who meet it while his stature raises to a full height and his attention hones in to the job.

With the rain soaking Valla's hair, cloak, boots and every thing else on the elf's body, he simply brushes off the discomfort while conversating with Sixtus, "No sir Sixtus, I am not offended. It is very obvious I have been mutilated. Why hide it, ey?" He raises his right arm, the one uncovered, and nods to the horridly long scar running across his wrist and the upper side of his forarm. I figure it will show fealessness to my enimies, with any luck, even intimidate....and yes, I've signed with Mr. Penn, although I do think something more to his caravan than he cared to offer. Then shurgging his shoulders with an uncaring attitude, "Im sure guarding this caravan will bring a challange, and we will learn in due time, Im sure...."

The Caravan - DM Jim
Monday July 20th, 2009 10:40:24 PM

A willow branch
That doesn't reach the water
In the vase.
-- Shigenobu 1832

Addressing Sanji's question before he floats out of the inn, Penn states that he comes back to town monthly, and would welcome his services if they are available at the time. Floating on his cushion and propping open the large umbrella affixed to it once he is outside, he motions for those who have signed on to follow him.

The group makes their way through the organized chaos that is Mudtown to where there are four vehicles--reminiscent of gypsy wagons (caravans)--grouped together about a quarter mile from the gate to the city. The caravans are being guarded by five people, who are visibly armed with crossbows and melee weapons and scanning the populace around them.

The man who has hired the group is recognized by the guards and allowed to bring the group into the caravan area. Once inside, Penn will reiterate the fact that, in Mudtown, there is no law enforcement provided by the Hook City Guard--the City Guard remains on the city side of the gate unless there is a murder committed within sight of the guard towers. Penn wants the group to guard his goods; the threats range from the odd bandit to cheeky orc raiders. There have been rumors of unethical merchants siccing their mercenaries on their competitors, but Penn believes that to only be rumor. The rest of the day is spent learning the routine of the area, getting to know the guards and finding your place to dine and sleep that night.

It's the morning after the party has been hired by Penn when a group of people (most likely mercenaries, as they are not dressed like merchants) happens to be passing by the perimeter of the encampment. One of the group--a half-orc with an eyepatch and short, spiky brown hair, sneers at your party.

"Venbolio must be desperate to hire such a sorry-looking lot!" The opinion underscores that the speaker is female and, as she and her group draw near, you can see that the half-orc is definitely a warrior, as she has a greataxe almost as large as she herself is (she's not even five feet tall.)

"Aye, Zimina," her half-elf companion nods his close-cropped blond head as he speaks, "I doubt this bunch could keep their grandmothers' thimbles from being swiped!" The comment makes the others with them break out in clearly mocking laughter.

A thin gnome wearing fancy clothing comments while pointing at Valla, "Ach, look at that one there, the ugly one, Damn! He makes you look like a beaut, Zimina!" The half-orc roars out in laughter than catches herself, "What?!"

The boisterous group does not seem intent on leaving...

Secondly, per my post Sunday July 5th, 2009 3:24:41 PM I posted that I intended to use my remaining spells to heal my character before meditating and regaining my spell slots. Can I assume that this was done and add my final 2 HP?

Seeing the party boisterously approach out of the corner of his eye, Bosk begins the carefully scan the area for others who might be trying to sneak up on them (Spot 1). As he begins his search, looking both high and low, a large drop of rain hits him in the eye and obscures his vision. Cursing himself he thinks, I am going to have to change my tactics here, this bloody rain never seems to stop. . As he blinks the water out of his eyes, his vision quickly returns.

They know our employer's name, interesting. I will have to check later and see if any one is familiar with this noisy lot.

Remembering yesterday's battle, and how quickly he became the warriors' primary target, Bosk decides to wait and see how things play out between Valla and the group first. Is this is how the people act in Mud Town...or perhaps I am misjudging him. Maybe Valla saw me sneaking around and is trying to distract them to ensure I am not seen. That would give us an advantage if things turn for the worse. Yes, surely that must be his plan.

"Zimina? Is that you?"

Slightly surprised, Bosk hopes that this will alter the tone of the conversation. Dose she know the orc, or is she just letting on? Hopefully she can calm this party down and get them to move on. Either way, I better be prepared. Placing one hand on his morning star, Bosk watches from his hiding spot. If things should go wrong and battle starts, he will lower his head and perform a minotaur charge and attack the orc. There are few words which could stir Sixtus into a frenzy and luckily there is no one in Mudtown who knows how to string them together. He watches as the apparent mercenaries halt in front of his charge and begin with a verbal lashing that would make a teenage jealous. Chewing the inside of his lip, Sixtus cannot help but see the edginess that some are teetering on. Then the insults are returned. He shakes his head slightly as Valla retorts about lineage and ancestors and whatnot.

"Calm yourself Valla. You yourself said the scars were nothing to be ashamed of."

Sixtus steps forward a ways with a wide smile and the devil in his eyes. There is something hard and final in his voice as he addresses the strangers. "So you know Venbolio, right? Well then, you would know that Venbolio wishes no one near his caravan. Perhaps you worked for Master Penn in the past--I do not care. We are his guards now. I am quite certain that you should either be looking for work or doing your job. Either way, neither of those includes us now do they?."

Sixtus makes no motion for his weapon and keeps his eyes trained on the half-orc female while shifting his stance into something more defensive. He brings his left arm slightly to the front, allowing the Eye of Gargul carved into his buckler to be seen.

Naru Spellcasting - DM Jim
Wednesday July 22nd, 2009 1:06:49 AM

OOC: Naru, no, you do not need to scream it, you must speak in a strong voice:

Page 174 PHB; Verbal (V): A verbal component is a spoken incantation. To provide a verbal component, you must be able to speak in a strong voice. A silence spell or a gag spoils the incantation (and thus the spell). A spellcaster who has been deafened has a 20% chance to spoil any spell with a verbal component that he or she tries to cast.

Also, if you could speak to her without her making a listen roll, they could hear your casting intonation. Spellcraft helps you identify what spell is being cast, not if a spell is actually being cast. Also, for targeting, I figured you were out in the open since you did not make a HIDE roll and it is a directed spell, so you had to point your finger at her:

Page 175 PHB; Target or Targets: Some spells, such as charm person, have a target or targets. You cast these spells on creatures or objects, as defined by the spell itself. You must be able to see or touch the target, and you must specifically choose that target.

They do not know what spell you casted at her, it could have been dominate person, hold person, daze, whatever. Since she has not fallen over dead, or been injured, they drew their weapons and made their demands instead of just attacking you.

If you want to do what you wanted to do, HIDE and use a metamagic feat such as Silent Spell, but that will come in time. You can dismiss your spell at anytime.

Then the other two mercenaries draw weapons and make effort into letting the little girl know that her life will end if the spell does not. He shakes his head clear of being surprisingly impressed and returns the reality and gravity of the situation.

"Release your spell girl! You are wasting the abilities that Venbolio is paying you to use for the job. [i]This is not our job. They are nothing." For the first time since the arrival of the mercenaries, Sixtus breaks eye contact with the enchanted female and casts a gaze of green ice towards Naru.

The girl there," Poking her thumb over at Naru, "Is a friend of mine, no harm done, right?" Zamnoodle the gnome eyes Zimina curiously, "If she's your friend, what's her name?" the half-orc thinks about it a bit, then says, "Hmm, I've forgotten," turning, she looks over at Naru and asks, "Sorry lass, I've forgotten your name, what was it again?"

Growing impatient, a bad flaw of Valla's, he looks around awkwardly, If I speak much more Im probably just going to escalate the situation... If I stay silent and stand here, Im leaving the fate to this encounter in the hands of the little girl... Although sixtus is here, and Sanji, they seem capable of talking these two down... This town is muddy in its streets and in its people... with that Valla simply walks, unthreating hands open to his sides, away fromt he strangers. Im done with this foolishness, the girl, the halfbreeds, none of it is worth losing my job, or life... Stupid dirty city.... Finding a nice dry place just inside one of the caravans, he sits, legs crossed and begins to meditate silently. Listening to every sound, including the encounter in front.

The tension was beginning to get to wear on Bosk's nerves. He could hear he heart pounding and was almost surprised that no one else could. It was not that he was scared, but rather that the long wait gave him too much time to think and overloaded his body with adrenaline. The anticipation of what may be about to occur and knowing that he had no control over events revealing himself only served to intensify matters. What is wrong with these people? This was never how things were handled on Minotaur Isle. People were decent and good to one another, and it was considered a point of honor to aid in upholding the law. Petty issues like this were settled by a kayleb, a quick combat with a neutral judge and all parties fighting on an equal level. You stop at first blood (for minor offenses), and it is over. No hard feelings. Lesson learned. Why can't it be that way over here? Here you catch a thief, try to make sure he has done some wrong, and get an arrow aimed at your head. I wish they would either leave or fight. This endless waiting is driving me insane.

She was growing impatient, Zimina was acting strange, not her usual gruff self, and the gnome, he sure was fidgeting a lot when looking askance at that robed loud-mouth (Padre). "Hey, I didn't cast a spell, I was just saying hi!" Naru says, her hands in mock surrender. "You're a stinkin' liar!" The half-elf says, sensing aptly that Naru was trying to bluff her way out of it. "Maybe we should go," Zamnoodle interjects, before his companion pelts Naru with an arrow or two. "That would be wise," Says Venbolio Penn as he rounds the corner of the encampment. "You rascals aren't welcome here, now shoo!" Penn waves them off as he would little children begging for a handout.

The half-elf squints under the gaze of Penn and says, "This is not the end of this matter," then puts away her bow and drags the protesting Zimina away, "But my friend and I were just getting acquainted again." The gnome follows behind and eventually puts away his sword.

Once gone, Penn motions behind him and is smiling as he leads about a dozen or so people into the encampment. "These are friends of mine," Venbolio tells you, indicating two richly-garbed individuals, "They'll be visiting me until about sunset or so. I give you permission to go to one of the refreshment tents that are set up in Mudtown, the Mug-o-rama is nearby, and relax a bit. My friends have brought their entourage with them, so I know my caravan will be secure while they are here. Go and enjoy yourselves--but be back by sundown!"

Bosk waits until he is sure the orc's party is gone before leaving his hiding spot and returning to the caravan. Stretching his legs as he walks, he gives a smile to the rest of the group, which somehow never quite reaches his eyes. I better make sure that I am seen by Penn, and that he puts together that I was flanking those guys rather than hiding or slacking off. Walking through the very spot where the orc had stood just moments before Bosk approaches the group.

Turning to look at Sixtus he says, "Would you care to join me? I never got to thank you properly for helping me yesterday, and have much I would like to ask you. It is a rare pleasure for me to meet another follower of Gargul, and as they say "Seldom do Eyes of Gargul cross." My only real plan for today is to find Rain and thank her properly for her kindness, and in a town like this I wouldn't mind a second pair of eyes."

Sixtus' mouth tightens into a grimace and his head turns to the left as Venbolio rounds the caravan and shoos away the group with no effort what-so-ever. Frustration mounts as twice in one day he has not released his axe from its holder upon his back. He is being paid to protect a caravan and this day his mouth attempted to diffuse the situation before his hand silenced it.

As Valla nudges him back into full attention of the present time, Sixtus nods and begins walking with those who are heading to The Mug-o-rama. Then the minotaur rounds the caravan, revealing his position, and asks Sixtus to head with him back to the Poison Frog Tavern.

"I will. To true indeed that seldom do the Eyes of Gargul cross. It is nice to know that there are others of Gargul in these lands...it is rare to come across any who posses a link to the divine like we do. Plus, someone needs to go with you to save your life." Sixtus lightly punches Bosk in the arm and allows a smirk to flow across his lips.

Turning to the others, Sixtus addresses Valla first and then the group.

"Save me a seat, Valla. We will meet you at the Mug-o-rama, where we have much to discuss about our job. We need to establish a watch through the night as well as address how we are going to handle certain situations when they arise. I wanted to look for that white-garbed man as well while Bosk and I head to the tavern and see if I can convince him to come too."

The Mug-o-rama - DM Jim
Friday July 24th, 2009 3:39:53 PM

Acquiesing to Penn's offer for taking a break, the group heads out for the Mug-o-rama, less Bosk and Padre who head out for the Poison Frog, which is a short distance away. The Mug-o-rama is actually an area roughly fifty square feet or so. At the south end of the area (the area closest to the walls of the city) is what amounts to a rather weather-beaten lean-to made from wood that has seen much better days. The lean-to looks to be perhaps fifteen feet wide, and has a rough wooden counter in front of it, creating a VERY crude sort of tavern set-up. There are three men behind the counter, and they are doing a brisk business of dispensing drinks for the dozens of customers that approach the counter demanding ale, wine or spirits. To the right of the lean-to and counter is a large, open fire, upon which is a spit being turned by two females as a third one tends to the critters roasting on the manual rotisserie.

Most of the rest of the space is a collection of stools, benches, chairs and tables that all look like they've been cobbled together from recycled bits and pieces of wood and/or metal--obviously the eating/drinking area of this "tavern". The whole of the area is not enclosed by any kind of fencing nor walls, but there are large tent poles holding up a large and rather disreputable-looking piece of canvas. The tent poles are very large and sturdy--they are about a foot in diameter and about fifteen feet of the poles show above ground, as the rest of the poles have been countersunk into the ground for stability.

"What'll it be gents, ladies..." inquires one of the barkeeps.

I'll have some of that roasting meat and a class of ale. Sanji gives a nod to the fire pit to indicate the meat in question. She saunters over to a stool near the fire and leans up next to the wall. She gathers some other chairs and stools around just in case the rest of the group chooses to meander over, crossed her legs in a masculine style and scans the room.*

Her thoughts drift to the day's events and to the near altercation that occurred just before the group was released for the evening. Again, things were calmed down with words. There might be something do this whole "talking" thing. That's twice that it's worked in a single day

She pushes her thoughts to the back of her mind and leans toward one of the nearest woman tending the cooking meat. So what seems to be new in this fine corner of civilization?** Sanji speaks with obvious sarcasm, hinting that this area is neither fine nor civilized.

The blonde minotaur and the well-tanned human walk side by side through the wheel-gouged troughs of mud as they make their way back to The Poison Frog Tavern with the intent to repay Rain for the words and hospitality that was shown to Bosk earlier that day. The hulking minotaur casts his cautious, ice-blue eyes over the people of Mudtown, doing his best to find trouble before it seeks him out.

"Gargul tested you this morning, Sixtus and you passed well. I thank you greatly for your efforts. Know that I will return the favor if such a circumstance, Gargul forbid, falls upon you."

Sixtus looks up, his dark skin a startling contrast to the lightness of Bosk's fur, and a warm smile melts the seriousness of his face. Lifting his left arm to show the buckler with the Eye of Gargul symbol fashioned upon it.

"Luckily it was the Lord of Life who looked upon you, Bosk. I hope, if I am in those circumstances, that the Giver and Preserver of Life is the one who looks upon me as well." After a few moments of contemplation, Sixtus looks up at the fellow Eye and punches him lightly in the arm. "I am glad that you are on this job. Our presence, together, will be formidable and show the power of Gargul in this god-sparse land."

The two make their way to The Poison Frog Tavern and as they enter, look for young woman who talked with them earlier. Bosk strides to the bar and inquires with the bartender if the prepaid meal was redeemed yet or if Rain had even shown up.

Sanji arches her back and feels tight muscles straining. Two muffled cracks give a little relief. She exhales and adopts a slouching position. Still stretching, she cocks her head to the side and looks toward Valla. Hey, it works for me as long as it keeps the rain off our heads and the sun out of our eyes. So how do you think Mr. Penn knew those trouble makers from earlier? I wonder if they were past employees. Also, it was kinda wierd to be asked to leave as soon as company showed up at the caravan. With my luck, we will find the caravan sacked when we return at sundown.

Sanji gives a smile and chuckle while shaking her head. That reminds me, I wonder if those other 2 clerics will be able to keep themselves out of trouble. I wonder where they went? Well, I suppose Padre could use that silver tongue of his again. He sure can calm people down with his words. I wonder how he learned to do that?

Blushing slightly, Sanji realizes how much she has been talking and gives her left knee a awkward scratch. So what's your story? Were you drawn to this fine town by the beautiful weather and prestine lodgings?

Lenwe chuckles at Sanji's remark.

"I want to furthur my education and even lesser arcane schools are expensive. That takes money. If you survive, this type of work can be very profitable. I suspect Mr Penn, as an experienced AND successful merchant knows many people...and as for asking for us to leave...I can respect the need for privacy when doing business...but I was a little surprised that he sent all of us away. I suspect he must have some private bodyguard, just in case."

Perhaps he is showing them is wares, he said they brought thier entourage along. I assume he'd be well protected, or he wouldn't have sent us on a break. But who knows, you may be right. I agree with Lenwe though, he probably has a private guard. Maybe those men we saw guarding the caravan yesterday when we first showed up?

Valla glances over his shoulder, like he is looking for the two clerics. Bosk had said something about Rain, the lady that let us heal the minoutar under her tent. But who really knows, both followers of Gargul, the god brought them here, who knows where he'd take them next."

Valla blinks a few times and drops his headd when asked his story, "I was drawn to Hook City on the sole feeling that I could get enough money here to do greater things. For me, this is temporary. Wha about yourself?

Without much ceremony or even a "Ere ya go," various plates with slabs of meat on them are set before the group, and soon enough the pitchers of ale come shortly thereafter. The roasted meat is tasty enough, but there's something odd about the taste, it's a little off or unusual, but no one at the table can quite put there finger on it.

At the Poison Frog, Bosk inquiries about the girl, "Rain", and the barkeep says he doesn't know who she is. But looking out the window, the pair see she's across the street hawking her wares as she was the other day.

As the bartender proclaims not knowing the girl who helped early, Sixtus lets out a small sigh, before he and his fellow eye spot her outside, in the rain, doing what she can to make a living. A wincing smile flashes across his face as a mix of admiration and pity dances through his stomach. Sixtus hit's Bosk's arm with the back of his hand and points through the window to the peddler.

"Admirable...I think. It is strange to discover what sort of cloth one is cut from. How a decent person can make it in a place like this. Admirable...I think."

His eyes seem warm and endearing as he peers through the distorting glass to the simple, young lady trying to eek out a living in the glorious rain and muck. He cannot help but wonder what her story is. Was she born here? Why here? What holds her back from entering Hook City?

Looking back up to the blonde minotaur Sixtus asks with a bit of eagerness coating his words, "Shall we, big guy?"

Care to join me in a stroll through the market? As a Cleric of Gargul, I have been meaning to find a suitable cloak for some time. However it is hard for me to get one with a cowl that fits properly. Most of the ones here have no point to them. Nodding his head slightly and swinging his horns for emphasis he hopes the Padre catches not only the joke, but his pointing out Rain in the processes. For some reason I doesn't trust the people of this town, even if I can see no harm in speaking openly about going to see Rain. This whole town seems to have an air of misgiving. I wonder if Sixtus feels it also.

Assuming the Padre will join him, Bosk will head over to Rain and invite her back to the Mug-O-Rama to have the previously promised dinner with his new comrades. (And if he happens to find a proper cloak he will get that too, however he will not go out of his way to find it.)

After which he says Immature tricks are not worth my time, Dirty one, and it looks as though you need to take a bath now. As he dumps the juices on the gnomes head, Valla chuckles as he backs away a few steps from the gnome and sets his feet ready for some attack. Sneers at the small group, Now, did you tamper with our food or not? If so we have something to settle your shortness , if not, I advise you to stay away from our group before you and those half breeds meet their match.* With that Valla readys an Acid splash spell.

Xeron shakes his head in more disgust. False pride and misguided honor are a sure way to be killed in Mudtown. With all the nasty comments "i heard about my mother and the stuff they did to us, I would be dead if I did not learn to back off, take it and wait my time for revenge.

He gives the elf one last chance, screaming VALLA, TIME TO GO!

The blond minotaur hesitates a moment, taken aback by the woman's immediate and flat refusal of his offer. I wonder if the Mug-O-Rama really is that bad, I hope I haven't offended her. While pondering her reaction, he begins to senses that there is something different about Rain, but he is unable to place his finger (Spot check 10).

Placing that thought aside for a moment, Bosk suddenly becomes aware the he is unsure of whether she is rejecting the idea of that restaurant, him and his offer to her, or if she meant something else entirely. Doing his best to sense her motive (Sense motive 14), he is still a bit confused by the situation, and looks towards Padre to see if he has the same inclination. Something just doesn't feel right about this...she seems different to me. Perhaps it is because I was barely conscious when I met her? Or maybe she is acting differently because of those around her...what am I talking about, I don't even know her. Maybe this is how she always is. Still, something doesn't feel right. I had best be on my guard. I have learned the hard way not to ignore my instincts.

Bosk will wait for feed back from the Padre. If the indicates that he feels something is up or that they should leave, he will follow his lead. If the Padre feels that nothing is wrong, or does not make a move, Bosk will suggest eating at the Poison Frog Inn instead.

"Okay, okay. No need to yell. Its a free meal but perhaps business is good enough that you do not need someone else to pay for your meal. How about you treat us two then?" His last words drip with light-hearted humor and a bit of sarcasm.

Sixtus casts another sideways glance up to Bosk and begins meandering through Rain's wares, truly interested in what she is making a living at. He walks away a bit, not wanting to put his tongue into matters that define the honor system of Bosk's race. Ariman sat at the wagons, saddened by the display of pride, ego and violence. As the party was dismissed, he felt a call to commune with Alemi. In the constant drizzle Ariman sat under what cover could be found and began to play a small flute. (Not "perform" only part of his "profession" skill - Priest.) He began to repeat some of the liturgy of Alemi. "Dear Father, show me the way, help me to bring a Word of Honor and Compassion to this dark and dismal corner of the world." Opening his eyes, he looked to see if there was any who might be open to a cpnverstaion about openness and awareness.

Seeing Sixtus return his glance confirmed what the minotaur suspected causing warning bells to go off inside his head. Sixtus senses it too. Something is up, but what.

"Okay, okay. No need to yell. Its a free meal but perhaps business is good enough that you do not need someone else to pay for your meal. How about you treat us two then?

Torn, the cleric considers what to do. The rules of chivalry followed by his people clearly dictate that his promise must be upheld. Although, offering to do something, making a promise, and swearing an oath were completely different things, and things were not adding up here. Another possibility then occurs to him. Perhaps Rain is in trouble, or he has placed her in a bad position by asking her to eat with him infront of the other women. They might be getting the wrong idea.

Again, I must apologize. We are unfamiliar with the restraunts in this area and have already promised our friends that we would meet with them and they will worry if we are late. Such is the atmosphere created by this town. If the place is as bad as you say we may very well eat elsewhere, and would be glad to let you know if such is the case. Otherwise, I will have to show my gratitude another time."

Assuming Rain does not change her mind to join them at the Mug-O-Rama, Bosk will join Sixtus in his browsing while keeping an eye out for anything suspicious If given the chance he will talk to other shop keepers about Rain to see if he has caused her problems, or anything is the matter.

Wednesday July 29th, 2009 6:04:17 PM

Sanji watches as the gnome stands defiantly and listens to Xeron's comments. She begins to walk forward, to defend her new coworker. All the torment of years past comes back to her with every step. With every footfall, she relives some of the ridicule she received in her younger days for being smaller than most, an orphan, or just being a woman. Waves of emotion break over her and she has to struggle against the tide to keep the fury building inside her from sweeping her away.

Suddenly, she remembers a particularly cruel boy from her youth and his embrassing, ongoing joke. Perhaps she could turn the tables on this bully. She speaks up in a clear vioce, so that all nearby can hear her, she steps forward as she tries to remember all the punchlines. My dear little gnome, I thought I was clear earlier, but buying me and my friends special food will not chang my mind. I can't be your wife. It doesn't matter how many times you propose, my answer will always be no. At first your constant pursuit was flattering. But, now it is simply pathetic. The enduring love that you keep professing to me can never be returned. Come Valla, there is no longer any need to defend my honor. I will never forget the first time I saw you in Mudtown, my funny little gnome, when you ran up to me wearing that rediculous dress that you swore was a robe. I will keep that memory of you forever, for it always makes me smile.

With that, Sanji blows the gnome a kiss and flashes a crooked smile toward valla. Feeling very satisfied, she turns her back on the gnome and begins to exit the tent, unsure if the others will follow her.

Attempting to hit the gnome, Zamnoodle, in the face with his food, Valla misses badly but luckily doesn't hit anyone else, just the back of the wall. Taking a 5' step back, Valla prepares himself for an attack and it comes in the form of a flung mug of ale, "Here, maybe this will pretty you up, Scarface!" The mug slams into Valla's face and the gnome cries out, "Yes!"

Xeron seems to be yelling to himself, since no one else seems to be paying attention to him whatsoever. Turning to Lenwe he comments that they're number is probably down to seven now.

Lenwe makes a comment on Valla's enthusiasm, finishes his ale and prepares to leave.

Almost immediately Sanji begins her diatribe about not becoming the gnome's wife, rebuffing his advances, leaving Zamnoodle and those around him confused.

The Mug group are now in combat rounds, unless Valla runs away, or breaks off combat. Sanji, Xeron, Lenwe all make a SPOT DC10 roll to Highlight to display spoiler: {A group of 3 other men and women, all wearing the same insignia as Zamnoodle, and his two companions, are sitting at the bar and have turned to see the action}

She puts her hands on her hips and looks defiantly at the pair. Her "sisters" giggle in the background.

Ariman is finding it quite lonely sitting in the slight drizzle of the late afternoon, since everyone else had left.

Sixtus winces lightly as Rain declares that he must not be much of a man. That cuts deep. He turns to address her, stops himself, and closes his agape mouth. He fingers through the books, looking for anything interesting on Gargul, the Woldian deities, or about the Platinum Dragons' exploits.

"You have quite the selection here, Rain. I am a man who enjoys a good read and I am quite impressed."

Depending on if Rain's selection holds anything of interest to Sixtus, he will purchase a book or two and then pat Bosk's back, letting the minotaur know that he is finished shopping.

"Looks like I am ready to go, Bosk. Unfortunately it seems as though you must now endure a month's starvation to punish yourself for not being allowed to repay the one who gave you aid. It gives you another chance to do what you want. If you want to go after the gnome and his friends, then let's prepare for it, ambush and finish them. Food fight are childish.

He stops for a second and spits on the ground "You have no idea who I am and what my life has been. And do not call me comrades" He starts breathing heavier as he gets angrier "We have nothing in common other than the same employer. If someone attacks you to get to the cargo, then I will kill them or will die protecting you. If you want to pickup a fight about a stupid joke, you are on your own.

He speeds up the pace back to the caravan, obviously very upset "being good is so darn difficult! Stealing was much easier. I hate been good."

I wonder what it means. She ponders this question this question as she regroups with the others leaving the tent.**

After listening to Valla and Xeron argue, she feels compelled to interject. The fact of the matter is that you're both right. Yes, it wasn't the smartest thing to let those bullies goad us into action. I admit that I fell into that trap as well. I was ready to fight and kill if necessary. My reasons for that are.... complicated. I've been the victim of people like that on too many occassions. But, we also need to know that we can count on each other in any given situation. I am only willing to work with people that I trust. You have to protect the people that you are with. Now, that doesn't mean killing others on a whim. But, I've seen plenty of bar fights that didn't end in killing. I know that we have not known eachother very long, but I need to know that if someone is threatening my safty that you all are willing to step in and do what is necessary. If I can't count on that, then we need to re-evaluate our working relationship with Mr. Penn.

Sanji pauses to let the words sink in. I'm not perfect and I don't expect you to be. But, I'll be honest with you, I need the money I'll get from this job. We need to find a way to make this work. Now, does anyone know what they could have put in our food to make it taste like that?

The Mug-o-rama & the Poison Frog - DM Jim
Thursday July 30th, 2009 5:08:41 PM

As the four made their way out of the Mug-o-rama, Sanji carefully noted that no one seemed to be following them. She did notice that the three at the bar joined their fellows at the table with another round of drinks and seemed to be bursting at the seams in laughter. Such comraderie, they had each other's backs and they seemed to have formed a free company as noted by their insignia--a group that always works together. It was unfortunate that she felt that once this job was done, everyone would go their seperate ways, and once again she would be waiting in the rain for a job for gods knows how long while seeing all of the other free companies get said jobs before she did.

Xeron was on edge as he always was, it was this place, his past, his failings that he couldn't just let go of. In the back of his mind he knew that bar fights in Mudtown were very rarely lethal. In fact there was an unwritten code that no weapons, or spells causing harm were to be used during a bar fight, lest the rest of the bar turn on those who did and end the threat immediately--but this didn't stop him from being pissed at Valla.

Valla's face ached where the mug had slammed into his face, in fact there was a slight trickle of blood running from his nose now that he wiped away at it. He had been bested by that damn gnome--he would have to come up with a plan of revenge that was so cunning you could pin a tail on it and call it a weasel.

Lenwe was the last to leave the Mug, but not before hearing a few choice bits of gossip from the tables nearby:
1. The Iron Band is a group that is rather successful amongst all the merc groups--most of the mercenaries in Mudtown don't much like them.
2. Goblin activity has been on the rise lately--perhaps they are gearing up to attack Hook City?
3. There have been several strange deaths in the area (skulls cracked open and brains removed), although the City Guard haven't looked into them (no surprise there!).

As Lenwe finishes his drink and leaves, he does see the gnome cast a spell in Valla's direction and then say something.

Valla hears the gnomes voice in his mind, "Hey loser, if you want another face full of ale, you know where to find me." The spell is immediately dismissed as Valla thinks of a quick rebuttal.

Meanwhile some blocks away, Padre and Bosk continue to converse about the plight they are in. Padre finds that the books Rain is selling are not to his liking--all of which were romance novels.

All of Xeron's anger disappears when he hears Sanji 'Sanji, you are right. I have been bullied and much worse all my life and seen the only person I ever loved going through much much worse, simply because of who she was. This is why I learn the art of the blade and how to bleed someone silently. I have also learn that revenge is serve best cold. Vengeance takes time and it is easier when bullies feel overconfident.

He pauses and takes a deep breath "My take is that it was not an accident. The gnome looked for touble at the caravan, then looked for trouble at the inn. My instinct screams that if someone wants to give you trouble, you should only accept on your own term and own terrain if you can. Acting abruptly out of pride and honor is a weakness that wicked people will take advantage off. I have no love lost for the gnome. But if we are to confront him, I want to sure we are prepared and ready."

He stops, looks at Sanji in the eyes before turning his eyes away and blushing "I will protect your safety, don't you worry. How can anyone bullies someone as special as you ....

He walks away embarassed way to go, champ. Can you even talk to her without turning red and running away. Now she must think that you are unreliable and a coward. Well may be it is a good thing. After all, if she is so similar to you, why would she waste her time with an average loser like you ?"

The walk back to the caravan is more than a little uncomfortable. The tension is tangible. Alright, get your head back in the game. Time to get back to work. Her mud-caked feet feel heavier with everystep. Perhaps tonight will be a little different for us. Maybe there will be another argument over who gets to stand first watch.

Sanji shakes her head in thought. We have a chance working together. This is possibly something I can finally belong to. Our arantement with Mr. Penn could be the first in a long line of jobs for this group. But, can we learn to work together? I guess time will tell.

Sanji hears Ariman's comments and can't help but smile. Tis true, folk here don't seem to take too keenly to this guy. You missed out on all kinds of fun at the Mug-o-rama. We almost got in a fight with another group of merc's and there's a possibility we could all be vomiting our guts out by tonight. Who wants to volunteer for cleen up duty? Sanji tries to bring some humor back to the situation, not knowing if it will have any effect. Is there any way you can figure out if we've been afflicted with some evil poison? As the group walks back to the carvan, Lenwe shares what he has learned..."I lingered back there - just in case the little idoit's friends decided to jump you, I had a sleep spell ready. I did hearing the following - but it is gossip, so how true it is - I am not sure:

1. The Iron Band is a group that is rather successful amongst all the merc groups--most of the mercenaries in Mudtown don't much like them.
2. Goblin activity has been on the rise lately--perhaps they are gearing up to attack Hook City?
3. There have been several strange deaths in the area (skulls cracked open and brains removed), although the City Guard haven't looked into them.

The fact that the City Guard hasn't bothered to investigate bothers me a bit. We should watch each other's back - a sense of justice seems to be rare here...."

Back at the Caravan - DM Jim
Friday July 31st, 2009 5:20:14 PM

The group, having reassembled at the caravan, convey to each other what happened, or as much as they would like to admit. Ariman expertly inspects Sanji, making her stick out her tongue, check the pupils of her eyes and so forth and comes to the conclusion she is not poisoned as far as he could tell--If he had a bit of the meal, maybe he could tell a little better.

Soon enough Penn's party had broken up and he said farewell to his friends. Seeing all of you there he explains a few things about the night watch you are about to take, "The night is twelve hours long, and usually broken up into either three or four shifts, depending on the number of guards available. Since your group has eight people in it, then there can be four three-hour watches, with two of you per watch. Who takes what watches are up to you--Just keep me and my cargo safe, so keep your eyes and ears open. I take my leave of you, good night!"

Penn retires for the night and leaves you all to your guard duties.

Please decide who is on what watch, 1-4, and then everyone make a SPOT and LISTEN roll for your watch.

Padre Sixtus Torquemada | HP10/10 | AC16 | Spell List | [Drew]
Friday July 31st, 2009 9:05:35 PM

Sixtus watches the remainder of Venbolio's group finish their business and then meander out of camp. He offers a small, warm smile to those who make eye contact and nods to his boss as the explanation of watch duties is covered. His eyes, be it soft around the edges, are hard in their depths and the light green hood that his thrown over his head accentuates their fierceness.

Once the group is alone, Sixtus turns to address the group of mercenaries assembled.

"We need those of us who have the ability, by nature, magic or blessing, to see in the dark to take the two middle watches. We need at least one person who has this ability to cover each shift. Light is faltering now so if anyone who can peer through the waning light but not the dead of night should take this watch. Although I am human, my master has blessed me with the ability to see through the deepest of natural darkness, therefore I will take the third shift. If there is not enough of us to cover all four shifts, I will take the third and fourth shifts."

There is something a bit different with the cleric as business is addressed. Sixtus paces slightly, his eyes are bright and attentive, and his hand intermittently strays to the wooden symbol hanging around his neck. His voice is gentle yet serious and matter-of-fact. Sixtus watches the others for a moment and then adds, "Naru, young one, you can then take the fourth watch as the morning light begins to arrive." Sixtus turns to the group, "Who else here has the ability to see through the darkness?"

After a few moments of thought and lip chewing, Sixtus adds one last thing.

"Does anyone know magic which could be placed around the caravan to serve as a warning if intruders were to come too close?"

ahh, lenwe, I can see in the darkness, provided the moon shines over the hellish city. It gives off enough light for me to see just as well as Im able to now. I can take the second watch. That puts Lenwe, who can see a good amount in the dark, the me who can see just fine, and then Sixtus, who also can see just fine.... The minotaur listens as others take claim to one of the watch posts; his lot does not concern him as no hour of the day is awkward enough to stop him from doing his job. Bosk smiles slightly as there are only two lots left--the third with Sixtus or the fourth with Ariman.

"I will take the fourth watch with Ariman. It seems as though Sixtus has the same blessing that I do from our master so I should join with one of us who does not have this ability. The morning will be as best guarded as possible."

Reaching down and grabbing the iconic Eye of Gargul pendant that hangs from his neck, he rubs it between to massive fingers and returns a gaze to the group.

"I, of course, will require an hour of prayer. Please wake me, Sixtus, a little over an hour before my shift is to start so that I can receive my blessings before I am to work."

Sixtus watches as, for the first time, the group seems to ease their way through a task without much of a squabble. He nods approvingly at the logic which everyone seems to be using and nods acceptance as each stakes their claim to a post. His eyes seem more subdued now, perhaps due to the waning light or fatigue or worry or all three. He seems to fidget a bit with his hands and several times his pulls his hood over his head, only to get irritated by it a few moments later and roughly throw it back over his shoulders.

"Well, that seems to settle things. Naru is stuck with me," Sixtus smiles wryly and throws a slightly joking wink to the young girl, "on the third watch. Bosk, I will indeed wake you in time to pray. Once you take your post, I will try to finish my sleep of the dead and dreams of revolutionaries before praying for my blessings."

Sixtus looks over the rest of the group for a few moments and again speaks. "Today has been quite a long day. We almost lost Bosk before we even knew his name. We almost wrung each other's necks without knowing who we are individually. Tonight, watch your partner's back as if you were brothers and sisters. If this job works out, more will come. The more that come means the more money for us to do with what we desire. If this works out, perhaps we consider forming a Free Company. Watch each other's back like they were blood, and soon enough they will be the closest thing to it you could ask for."

After the group is settled in to their chosen slots of watch, Sixtus checks that everything is secure in the general vicinity. As he lays down, armor and all, his mind races with thoughts, and he begins thinking of contingency plans for things that may never happen. Quickly, Sixtus raises himself onto his elbows and calls out, "A fire would be a wise idea. Have torches near the fire in case we are attacked. Get 'em in the fire if something starts to happen so that others can grab them if needed. Weapons out and not stowed may be wise as well." With that Sixtus returns to his sleeping position, head propped up on crossed arms, and begins a breathing exercise to calm his nerves.

I admit, I have not studied much of the faith of those who follow Gargul. Alemi once ruled and judged the creatures of the Wold with firm justice and tenacity. It seems that he has abdicated much of that dour responsibility to your lord, that he might love his creation more as a father and less as a judge."

Ariman holds his cudgel close, praying that he need not raise it in violence and that whatever may occur that some sense of reason and understanding might hold sway over the events of the evening.

Caravan Watch- DM Jim
Monday August 3rd, 2009 4:46:21 PM

Settling in for the night watch, Lenwe and Xeron sit about the camp fire idly talking for a bit, neither noticing the drunk men walk by their encampment, taking no heed of them. When the time came, both roused Valla and Sanji for their turn at guard duty. Both notice shortly after taking their turn, that a cunning little raccoon near a tent some 100ft away, outside their encampment, is breaking into a metal receptacle and getting at the trash/treasure inside. The shift continues quietly therafter as both keep a keen eye out for danger.

Waking Padre and Naru, both set about either memorizing spells or praying, but seeing that both can't do it at the same time, Padre defers to Naru getting her spells first then he begins his prayers. She is quite unaware of the furtive sounds of movement coming from behind Venbolio's tent, but Padre isn't as he finishes his prayers. Whispers and movement, something isn't right here, Padre thinks to himself and quietly alerts Naru, then wakes the others just as quietly. Some had just gone to sleep, others wake noisily, but are quickly quelled by Padre's hand. The cleric of Gargul motions to the area behind Venbolio's tent where the disturbance is coming from.

We are in combat rounds. Unless you say you are whispering, you're talking aloud. Spell casting is said in a strong voice.

The disturbance/whispering is about 30-40 feet away, still in the encampment, behind you and Penn's tent. I will make a map tonight.

Sanji takes a second to fully awaken. I would be woken up my first night on the job. Just my luck. It is aparent to those around her the she isn't a morning person and is more than a little upset that her sleep has been disturbed.

After being roused, she finally begins to understand that something is going wrong on the far side of Venbolio's tent. She whispers to the group, I'll go take a look. Some back up would be nice. Also, someone might want to get Mr. Penn out of his tent where we can guard him more easily. She adds hand gestures to her whispering to let the others know that she is going around the right side of the tent to take a look. She encourges Xeron to go around the other side. She silently touches both of her fists together showing that she wants to attack from 2 sides if they can. Nodding to the group, she begins to make her way to the far side of the tent, creeping along its edge and peers carefully around the corner, trying to reveal as little of herself as possible.* **

Whispering to bosk and Xeron, Little thief, I think you should go the other way around, and Bosk my advice would be to wait for some kind of signal, unlesss you think you can move quietly. Padre Sixtus Torquemada | HP10/10 | AC16 | Spell List | [Drew]
Monday August 3rd, 2009 8:53:18 PM

Sixtus could not believe what was happening. One moment he was communing to Gargul in the peaceful tranquility of a cemetery or birthing house...he could not remember with all that his happening...now he is standing in the mud, axe drawn, and is quickly waking the others of the group.

Using hushed tones he tells the others, "Something is going down on the other side of the caravan. Bosk, around the left side. I will go around the right side. Sanji with me and Xeron around the left with Bosk. You two out first, get into a position that you are comfortable with then wait for Bosk and myself. Mages, now is the test of your spellbooks. We will follow and the rest of you come in for support. Kill if necessary but allow no one to escape."

His words are harsh through the whispering, harsh like a grizzled veteran who smoked too much pipe in his life. His eyes flash through the darkness of the light, reflecting the orange of the fire, as he checks to ensure that his buckler is strapped tightly. He learned at an early age to sleep in his armor; over time his body grew accustomed to the uncomfort and now he sleeps just as well in his studded leather.

Sixtus waits for Sanji and Xeron to either comply or do what they do. He looks at each mercenary for a whisper of a moment wanting to know if they understand or are at least going to do something.

OOC: Okay, I have to ask OOC here because I have no way to email from work and I am here ALL day today.

First, are the lettered and numbered rows and columns supposed to be the guidelines for the 5'x5' grid? If so, is there a way to put a faint lined grid as a bottom layer of the map so that we can more directly tell you where we are moving to? Or would you rather play it lose in the movement category?

Second, the fence around the caravan, how tall is it? What is it made of, etc? I ask only to know if we can move through it or over it or if we need to move around it.

I LOVE your maps, Jim, but scale and a grid would be very helpfull to us all for posting purposes (unless, again, you would rather play movement a bit more losely).

It takes a moment for Bosk to realize that Sixtus is the man in front of him as his head is still foggy from dreaming. He listens quietly as the cleric whispers the plans and then gets up and reaches for his morningstar laying beside his resting place.

Nodding his approval of the human's plan, Bosk heads out form under the tent and begins making his way around hte left side of the caravan, following Xeron a few paces back. Feeling Sixtus wake him, the blond minotaur looks up at the moon, about to in form the cleric that he is early and that there is still two hours before his shift ends, when he catches a glimpse of the his green eyes buried within the cowl and sees the danger written there. Realizing that something was wrong, Bosk sits up and looks around in a futile attempt to locate the danger until he is informed that Padre had heard the noise on the other side of Penn's tent.

Nodding in approval as he hears Sanji's plan he rises, stretching not quite to his full height, but still towering other the others, when he hear Valla "Bosk my advice would be to wait for some kind of signal, unless you think you can move quietly." Bosk shoots him a quick smile, confident in his ability to move silently. I have had more than a little practice at moving stealthily, it is finding a place to hide that I find troublesome

Hearing Padre speak a again, he shifts his gaze to the hooded figure. "Bosk, around the left side." Nodding his agreement he thinks to himself, Back to Sanji's plan, that sounds like a better course of action. Besides, being one of the only two in this group able to see in the dark, it only makes sense for me to take a look.

Moving forward as quietly as he can (move silently 8), the minotaur cringes as small twigs crack under foot and puddles splash to announce his presence. He knew he was actually moving more quietly than he felt, however the adrenaline coursing through his veins made them sound to him as if the noise would be enough to wake Gargul himself. With every sound he made, the minotaur would either freeze in the darkness, letting the blackness envelope him, or (knowing there was a large tent between him and his target, giving him time to react, he would dart to the closest shelter capable of hiding his hulking form (hide 16). Inching ever forward, the giant of a cleric would listen for movement (listen 19) before peering around corners or leaving his hiding space (spot 7) and continuing across the seemingly endless length of the camp.

Spreading out to investigate the sound of the disturbance, everyone tries to remain quiet, all except Naru who inadvertently blurts out a few words and is quickly hushed by the Padre.

As the group stage their two pronged attack, they round the tent to see about a half-dozen or so humanoid figures at the back of the tent. The figures are a bit shorter than humans and although it's hard to see by the light of the moons and the campfire they seem to resemble rather lumpy goblins. Most seemed surprised by your sudden appearance as they are busy whispering to each other about gods know what.

Combat Map

The fence is 6ft tall and takes an additional 5ft of movement to cross, so 10ft total to cross it.

I've made two versions of the map, one with and one without the grid. I cannot seem to get a good looking gridline and have used multiple colors, etc and I think it still looks like crap, so from now on I'll just post both pics in the turn.

Yes, each square is 5' so please remember to post which square you're moving too (also remember that every 2nd diagonal square of movement is an additional 5') and if you're targeting a square or a gridline cross (like F/G 3/4) for a spell or prayer.

Thanks for the compliments, I try to make interesting maps that look good, but they do take some time unfortunately. I will continue to keep making them as long as you want because I think they really add to the game.

Please state you actions for Round 1 now that the enemy has been found :)
