DM Adam Monday July 6th, 2009 1:27:40 AM
There is little difficulty finding your way back to the scene of yesterday's battle, the scent of the rotting bulette making the task extremely easy. From here the cousins are able to back track their path from the previous day.
With the sun hanging low in the sky you realize It will be a few days till you reach the area where the wyvern was spotted.
(Can I get a watch order if one is to be set for the night.)
Selemar [ac 18 hp 23/23] Monday July 6th, 2009 10:51:56 AM
Selemar prefers the last watch, but isn't picky. The bear sleeps through all watches. lazy
Hmark and Dathish (sub MikeK) Monday July 6th, 2009 3:48:53 PM
Hmark pretty much keeps to himself, generally riding at the tail end of the group as the rear guard. Occassionally, the archer will pause his filly and carefully scan the country behind them, making sure no one is trying to follow.
As evening approaches, he agrees to take a middle of the night shift.
---
The druid Dathish and the wolf that is his constant companion also remain mostly uncommunicative. For lack of a better alternative, he indicates he'll team up with Hmark on watch.
Zeph AC19 HP 37/37 HeroesLoot3 Monday July 6th, 2009 5:19:55 PM
Zeph is rather talkative, "So, when you saw the Wyvern, what did it look like? What do you think its attacks were? Any weak spots?" Zeph asks whoever of the three will listen to him.
He takes a shift at the beginning so that he may get 8 hours of rest so that his spells are prepared.
Spells Prepared, the usua sortal:
1st - Shield, Grease cantrip - Touch of Fatigue, Ray of Frost, Detect Poison, Resistance
Cambar (HP23 of 27 AC26) d20+10=23 ; Monday July 6th, 2009 10:29:06 PM
Cambar prefers a twilight or dawn watch, please.
She is a little hazy on the wyvern. "Um, it had a pointy barb on its tail? And wings? And two legs?"
[OOC: Here's a spot check ... a 23 ... so maybe Cambar saw some other detail? If so, maybe our kindly DM can add some info?]
Camlan AC18 (34/34 HP) and Myl Cal d20+7=21 Tuesday July 7th, 2009 12:19:42 AM
Making sure that Myl Cal is situated, Camlan takes a middle watch, knowing that there are likely others that need more rest than he. He attempts to keep himself close to Dathish, though he will not smother the druid. It's just nice having someone with similar interests...unlike his sister and cousin.
When asked about the wyvern, Camlan also searches his memories. "Well, it was big. And it had a nasty temper...I think it lifted Donovan up off the ground once."
Spot 21 if it helps. :)
Selemar [ac 18 hp 23/23] Tuesday July 7th, 2009 1:39:31 AM
The druids can form a clique now
DM Adam Tuesday July 7th, 2009 2:11:16 AM
Searching their memories Cambar, and Camlan mostly remember the sharp and pointy bits and how much they wished to avoid them, although when they really put the power to the ol' brain boxes they recall that almost every time they encountered the beast it was carrying a recent kill. You would guess that it had killed at least 4 full grown stags in one day.
The trail is clear and so is the sky as you set camp once again. The cousins estimate that the Wyvern is only another two days away.
Spot checks for those taking watch.
Watch Order (correct me if I'm wrong I just placed those who didn't note it.)
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Tuesday July 7th, 2009 9:45:35 AM
Garret sets up for watch, looking out over the mountains deep in thought.
If anyone could read his mind, they would hear, "I wonder if there's somewhere nearby where I could find some eggs to cook for breakfast."
Hmark and Dathish (sub MikeK) d20+5=19 ; d20+4=16 ; d20+5=16 ; Tuesday July 7th, 2009 3:00:24 PM
Hmark sums up the general description he's hearing about this wyvern, "Big, with lots of nasty, sharp claws, teeth, and tail". The lad nods decisively, and winks at Zeph. "Makes me glad I fight from distance."
That night, he and the reclusive Dathish keep a silent watch.
[Spot checks - Hmark - 19 Dathish - 16 wolf - 16]
Cambar (HP23 of 27 AC26) Tuesday July 7th, 2009 4:51:48 PM
That watch is A-OK by Cambar.
She asks if it matters how the wyvern is defeated. Taken alive? Some part intact? Maybe we need something to stop it from flying away, like Web spells or tanglefoot bags. Or nets or bolas? Maybe we can lure it into a trap? Or an ambush? Does anyone have any poison antidote?
Zeph AC19 HP 37/37 HeroesLoot3 Tuesday July 7th, 2009 7:36:10 PM
Zeph thinks for a bit about what Hmark said about fighting from afar and then takes a glance at the new melee-types in the group. "You know. I may follow you in that for a while, especially if we can get the drop on it." (and thus be flat-footed). Zeph says.
Then, when Cambar speaks, Zeph replies. "Well, we were told that the poison we require is in the sting of the creature. So don't smash its pointy too badly other than maybe to sunder the end of the tail off." Zeph says. Then he thinks for another moment. "Well. Ambush is always best. Luring it into a trap would be great... but I don't have any trap kits, heh. Guess we gotta see what we have to work with once we spot it." Zeph says, a little embarrassed that he never really utilized traps in his younger days and never got the knack for setting them... disabling on the other hand.
When the group lays down to rest, Zeph will study his spells and take his first watch.
Ready Action: Should a combat break out, Zeph would like to ready casting [i]Shield[i] on himself.
Camlan AC18 (34/34 HP) and Myl Cal d20+7=19 ; d20+1=2 ; Tuesday July 7th, 2009 10:51:58 PM
Camlan nods in agreement to the watch schedule. He thinks about what the others have said and then he speaks quietly. "Well, I can cast a spell that will Delay Poison... If we could set up a trap, then I could cast the spell and make a couple of people immune to poison for a few hours. I will ask Mother Wold for that. As far as traps go... from what we saw, the creature appears to have quite an appetite." Camlan speaks slowly, thinking through practically every word. "Do you have a spellcaster in the group? I have heard tell of people creating illusions of creatures. If we could make an illusion of the creature's prey, then perhaps we could lure it in? It would be best if we could choose the place of our encounter with the beast, but we have no guarantee."
The large ape follows Camlan. Its large brown eyes watch those around it with interest. Strange creatures, to be sure...very interesting scents. His large hand gently pushes a small stone around on the ground in circles...small ones in the beginning, then slowly larger ones...a small game to pass the time as he waits for his friend to finish chattering with the other humans.
Camlan's Spot=22 (Bleh, forgot to add in the Wis bonus) Myl Cal's Spot= a pathetic natural 1!!
Cambar (HP23 of 27 AC26) Tuesday July 7th, 2009 11:23:58 PM
If we can lure the beastie in with an illusion, maybe I and my horse can be off to one side, covered by another illusion. When the wyvern takes the bait, I can charge. Anybody have any illusion spells?
Or could one of you druids summon or find us a gazelle or other tasty tidbit to use as real bait? An illusion would have to smell real for it to work.
Selemar [ac 18 hp 23/23] Wednesday July 8th, 2009 12:56:00 AM
"Summoning something it wants to eat should be possible. And i do have a tanglefoot bag, if it will work on a creature that big."
DM Adam Wednesday July 8th, 2009 2:04:05 AM
Discussion of strategy continues as you set camp for the evening as Cambar has posed some very poignant questions. (Please feel free to continue the conversation)
The night passes with little incident, although Camlan had a bit of excitement during his watch when he thought he spotted a wyvern flying through the air, but it turn out to be only an owl.
Once again tomorrow comes with a cheery disposition.
(Spot checks again please, also any relatable skill and knowledge checks you wish to make to gleen futher information about your prey)
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] d20+5=6 ; d20+13=21 ; Wednesday July 8th, 2009 12:26:57 PM
Garret looks down at his feet as the talk continues the next morning, not noticing whether it is sunny or raining (spot roll: 1). He listens intently and adds, "I'm not real familiar with fighting such creatures. I can take aim at its eyes with my rocks if you like, but other than that, I can only suggest trying to beat it to death."

Zeph is a bit curious as to the newcomer's choice of lifestyle. "So.... would you mind if I were blunt and simply asked why you guys chose to do random adventuring work for a living?" Zeph asks, eyeing the WLA badge a good bit.
Selemar [ac 18 hp 23/23] Thursday July 9th, 2009 2:25:28 AM
"Beating it to death, and hitting it with whatever else at our disposal does seem the best option"
Cambar (HP23 of 27 AC26) Thursday July 9th, 2009 7:36:05 AM
"Well," says Cambar, answering Zeph, "speaking for just me, I always loved hearing the stories of Valdor Dragonstone and Joe the Hand and Bill Troublefinder and Flat-top the Centaur and the other great adventurers of the Wold. I just want to be like them, and do quests and help the needy and have fun!"
She pauses. "No deep anguish or vendetta or scheme or anything like that. Just working hard to make a difference. And maybe a name."
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Thursday July 9th, 2009 8:38:06 AM
Garret smiles when Cambar mentions some of the most famous heroes of the Wold. "I can't imagine anyone being as famous as them, but someone has to try, don't they?"
DM Adam Thursday July 9th, 2009 10:17:49 AM
Discussion of strategy continues, which is good as you are a only a day away from where the cousins were harassed by the wyvern.
You once again set camp, and begin the watch rotation. Late in the first watch Garret notices a pair of bright yellow eyes starring back at him from a nearby tree.
Hmark and Dathish (sub MikeK) Thursday July 9th, 2009 2:33:44 PM
Hmark spends his shift wondering about Cambar's comments. as famous as Valdor Dragonstone.....shoot, that'd be something alright
Dathish and the wolf also maintain their vigil.
Camlan AC18 (34/34 HP) and Myl Cal d20+10=29 ; Friday July 10th, 2009 12:03:17 AM
The druid smiles as Cambar relates to the others why she entered into adventuring. He adds his own to coppers to the conversation "That...and to make sure my sister doesn't kill herself."
During his watch, Camlan is very keenly aware of his surroundings. He diligently watches for any signs of their quarry. (Spot=29). He is careful to relay any findings to Donovan.
DM Adam Friday July 10th, 2009 4:13:29 PM
Still no quarry in sight, but you will reach the wyvern's suspected hunting grounds by mid day the following morning.
On there watch both Garret and Camlin notice an owl that seems to have a keen interest in your campsite.

Camlan AC18 (34/34 HP) and Myl Cal d20+5=19 ; Saturday July 11th, 2009 12:55:16 AM
Camlan smiles as he sees that Donovan has returned to his normal, boisterous self. Noting the owl, Camlan moves closer and begins speaking to it in low tones (Wild Empathy=19). "Hello there friend. What brings you to a strange place like this..." Mentally, Camlan chides himself for not asking Mother Wold to give him the ability to speak with animals.
DM Adam Saturday July 11th, 2009 3:09:30 PM
The owl seems startled by your approach as if it wasn't expecting to be seen and flies off.
Zeph AC19 HP 37/37 HeroesLoot3 Saturday July 11th, 2009 8:18:04 PM
If Zeph sees the attempt that Camlan makes with the owl, Zeph will chuckle and try to keep it under his breath. Well, its better than I can do. Zeph thinks, optimistically.
Hmark and Dathish (sub MikeK) Monday July 13th, 2009 10:19:11 AM
Hmark notes the attempt to befriend the owl. "Can we call it Hooters?" he asks playfully.
Dathish frowns at the archer's less than serious attitude regarding the local fauna, but says nothing. The wolf licks his hand.
DM Adam Monday July 13th, 2009 11:10:57 AM
Morning comes and once again you are off through the fields of green hills. About an hour into the journey the hair on the back of the cousin's respective necks rises instinctually as they recognize the upcoming pattern of trees. You're in wyvern territory now.
Cambar (HP27 of 27 AC26) Monday July 13th, 2009 4:11:48 PM
"Look, I still think there is no reason to wander around calling, 'Here, wyvern wyvern wyvern!' Even if we stake a few goats or deer or something in these trees, and hide ourselves up in the branches, at the least maybe we can get the jump on one and improve our odds."
Cambar looks around at the druid types. "And don't tell me no one in the party can find or summon some good wyvern bait!"
[OOC: Shoulda bumped up my hp with the morning's first post ... fixed now.]
Camlan AC18 (34/34 HP) and Myl Cal Monday July 13th, 2009 11:35:32 PM
Camlan shakes his head in mild disgust as Cambar presents her plan. He turns to the druids of the party and sighs. "Do you see what I have to put up with?!"
Turning his attention back to his twin, Camlan tries to explain to his wayward sister. "If you and Donovan hadn't been so busy sneaking off and getting into trouble, you would have learned that **all** life is sacred. You ask us to stake an innocent animal out to be bait for this creature. Would you do the same with Donovan? That is why I suggested the illusion." The young druid sighs, at a loss as to how to proceed. "It is true that if we summoned an animal to help us, it would not die, but it still seems....wrong." Camlan mulls over the problem as he continues to think about the owls behavior the previous night. Strange...very strange.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Tuesday July 14th, 2009 8:34:37 AM
Garret speaks up and says, "Well, there's no reason we cannot try the illusion, but if a wyvern uses its nose to smell its prey, I don't know that it will work. Still, we could try it first, and see what happens."
He bends down and picks up a nice round stone and slips it into a small bag.
Selemar [ac 18 hp 23/23] Tuesday July 14th, 2009 8:39:31 AM
"For that matter, wyverns aren't timid about eating intelligent beings. They are unlikely to attack so many of us I think, but most of us could hide and one or two could remain as bait. I'd be willing."
Hmark and Dathish (sub MikeK) Tuesday July 14th, 2009 9:40:42 AM
Hmark can't pass that one up. "I'm willing for him to be bait, too" he remarks, straightfaced.
Dathish ponders Camlan's objections. "But a summoned creature will return back to its native plane," he points out. "Its not the same as using a local animal. Plus, one could extend your argument to the wyvern itself. Yet none here are unwilling to kill it. I agree to summon the bait."
Cambar (HP27 of 27 AC26) Tuesday July 14th, 2009 11:51:35 AM
"So how's this sound? We all hide good and proper like, best as we can. We settle in and wait, like hunters. When we get a sense that a wyvern is about, Hmark here summons some good bait. Maybe he or some other druid can even talk to it and get it to make pathetic animal sounds, like, 'Here I am, a wounded antelope, hope nobody with sharp teeth is around here!' That'll do the trick."
"We probably have to stay out of scent range. Maybe we could call or rustle up some real antelope so we could rub 'em on ourselves and smear antelope pee and poop all over us. Couldn't hurt, anyway!"
"I might even persuade myself to take off my armor, for better hiding."
Cambar pauses. "But how am I going to hide my horse, here? If I stake him a quarter-mile off, he might come back to us in the belly of the wyvern. Ideas? Maybe one of you animal-talkers could tell my horse and all our other assorted critters that they have to be real quiet and still?"
She says to Selemar, "I don't think that a person would make good bait for this beastie. It didn't attack us when we came through. I bet it got the idea that people are dangerous, so it sticks to goats and bisons and them what's got four legs and such."
She adds, after a thought, "But that was a brave thing to think of."
Then she grins at Donovan and Camlan. "And it was brave of my good sister to volunteer Donovan as bait, too!"
DM Adam Tuesday July 14th, 2009 12:11:43 PM
As you continue to discuss strategy a monstrous screech echoes through the hills. The wyvern is easily spotted is as it soars through the air, an apex predator it flies without fear of being seen.
Whether you consider it fortunate, or not it flies far in the distance and does not seem to be coming your way.
Donovan Tuesday July 14th, 2009 9:10:25 PM
Speaking of bait. Cuz. Remember that time when we were out camping and you and I used Camlan as bait for that beetle that was terrorizing the farms out by your folks place. Remember the beating her ape gave us when he found out? You think about that the next time either of you think about using me as bait. If anything, lets use that flea bag horse of yours as bait. If the stench from it's hide doesn't kill the beast, it should stun it enough for us to get some good whacks on it before it tries returning the favor.
Donovan then starts gathering his gear, and donning his armor while waiting for the others.
Cambar (HP27 of 27 AC26) Tuesday July 14th, 2009 10:39:34 PM
"Hey!" says Cambar, at the mention of sacrificing her horse. "Don't you mind him," she murmurs to the beast.
Camlan AC18 (34/34 HP) and Myl Cal Wednesday July 15th, 2009 1:38:34 AM
Camlan frowns a bit at the memory Donovan brings to mind. Being staked out in the middle of cornfields for a day wasn't exactly his idea of a good time. He begrudgingly admitted that the two were able to bring down the beast that had been terrorizing the village. That was in the past though, and Camlan smiles at his sister and cousin. The two were definitely a fighting force to be reconded with.
He nods at the budding plan. "Though it doesn't please me to summon a creature just to have it be eaten, I will do so if it is for the greater good. Let's find an area to hide. And let me cast my Delay Poison spells before we get started. Let me know when you want to Summon the creature and I will try to summon something useful."
Camlan looks over at Myl Cal and smiles. The ape had been so quiet of late that Camlan was wondering about him, but a quick glance reassures the druid that his friend is fine.
Zeph AC19 HP 37/37 HeroesLoot3 d20+5=13 ; d20+10=23 ; d20+10=26 ; Wednesday July 15th, 2009 3:59:52 AM "I have no qualms about using an animal as bait. We are doing this to save many many lives of good people in the valley. And I will take any means necessary." Zeph says, thinking hard about the "sacrificing oneself" idea.
Then he watches the creature fly in the distance and begins to look around for an adequate place to hide. "Well, shall we move to some trees in the nearby area, summon a tasty critter, and ambush the sucker? I volunteer to shoot the first arrow." Zeph suggests with a bit of a wink to Hmark.
When the group finds a good place for the ambush, Zeph will hide behind a tree and wait for the Wyvern to take the bait... if it does. He will also draw his bow and notch an arrow.
Hmark and Dathish (sub MikeK) Wednesday July 15th, 2009 10:00:48 AM
Watching the wyvern fly off in the distance, Hmark sucks in air through his teeth. "Big critter," he observes helpfully.
The archer tags along on the group decision, and like Zeph, finds himself a hidey hole behind a nice tree. He takes his time about it, doing his best to get concealed while still having a good view of the "bait" area.
Dathish follows suit.
[both take 20 on hide rolls - Hmark 25, Dathish 20]
DM Adam Wednesday July 15th, 2009 11:10:24 AM
The plan seems to be agreeable, but the questions still remains what exactly is the plan?
What are you using for bait? And how will you make the wyvern aware of it's presence?
Zeph's Knowledge Arcana Result:You recall reading that wyverns can fly, and its sting can put a full grown human down instantly.

Camlan looks over at Cambar, a twinkle in his eyes. "So, once we summon the beasts and have them cry out in pain, you and Donovan are going to charge in and try and bring the creature down, right?" His moment of fun over, Camlan returns to his more serious self. "What I really need to know is who to cast the Delay Poison on. I think it would be best to cast it on those who will eventually be involved in hand to hand with the wyvern."
Myl Cal bores of all the human talking and heads toward the wolf of the company. A curious look on his face, the ape extends his hand in a friendly manner to the canine.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Thursday July 16th, 2009 9:11:21 AM
Garret points to Selemar and says, "He seems to do lots of bleeding, maybe he should have the spell. That is, if you can't wait until someone actually gets hit."
Hmark and Dathish (sub MikeK) Thursday July 16th, 2009 9:17:53 AM
Hmark retrieves an Everburning Torch from his backpack. "You can stick this out their next to your summoned critter," he offers. "Help attract the wyvern, plus give us a good view."
Cambar (HP27 of 27 AC26) Thursday July 16th, 2009 10:36:39 AM
She answers her twin brother, "Yup, that's the plan!"
"We all hide at least 30 feet from the center of these trees. When we hear a wyvern nearby, cast speak with animals and summon a good-eatin' beastie. Tell the beastie to cry out in pain like. When the Wyvern lands for a snack, we all charge!"
"What I'd really like is a good hiding space where me and my horse can hide under total cover. And then charge out with lance. That would be sweet! But how can I get that kind of cover," she says. "I really gotta get me a wand of illusion," Cambar mutters.
Failing that, she looks around for possible hiding places. Brush and bramble, thick leafy trees, pits or berms or boulders ... whatever.
Zeph AC19 HP 37/37 HeroesLoot3 Thursday July 16th, 2009 11:06:15 AM "Well, about the Delay Poison. I think that I will get in flanking Melee with the critter after I take my surprise shot with my bow. And I'm sure that my resistance to poison is lower than our larger companions." Zeph says, eyeing the other fighter-types in the group.
"Yeah. I like the idea of attracting the Wyvern with a hurt-animal scream. What else do we got to work with?" Zeph asks from his hiding spot.
(ooc: So, how far away is the creature anyways Adam? Like 100yards or less, more? Could it hear a loud animal-cry from this distance? Do we need to go closer?)
(Previous rolls: Move Silent = 23 Hide = 26, )
DM Adam Thursday July 16th, 2009 11:26:18 AM
(ooc: It is hard for you too gauge it's distance from you as it is flying and a large creature, It is more like a half mile to a mile away.)
As you prepare your ambush you once again hear the unmistakable cry of the wyvern as it retraces it's previous course, but now it holds a large stag in it's talons.
Cambar (HP27 of 27 AC26) Thursday July 16th, 2009 1:01:42 PM
"Well, we might have to wait a while," says Cambar. "That stag will keep it happy for a few days, I bet."
"Unless someone can cast Grease on the stag?"
"When the time comes, I'll take a Delay Poison. I'll be mixing it up close with the flying lizard."
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Thursday July 16th, 2009 5:02:59 PM
Garret watches the beast fly overhead. "Well, that one sure looks like it would have worked for our purposes..."
Camlan AC18 (34/34 HP) and Myl Cal Friday July 17th, 2009 2:07:38 AM
Camlan sighs at the groups bad luck. "I could summon an eagle and have it attack the best and then retreat to us if you want. It's a long shot at best." As he awaits what the other might say, Camlan makes sure that Myl Cal finds a good hiding spot. The ape is big enough, he might make a tasty treat.
Selemar [ac 18 hp 23/23] Friday July 17th, 2009 5:27:35 AM
I wonder if wyverns eat bears....
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Friday July 17th, 2009 9:24:59 AM
I like idea of the eagle. It could come back to us and relative safety.
Hmark and Dathish (sub MikeK) Friday July 17th, 2009 11:13:43 AM
Hmark rolls his eyes and steps into the opening. "HEY!" he bellows in the direction of the wyvern. "Bring back my dinner!"
Assuming that makes no impression, he turns to Camlan. "Can your eagle follow it and tell us where its camped out? If its gonna have a snack and then maybe a nap, now would be a good time to track the critter down."
DM Adam Friday July 17th, 2009 1:21:15 PM
Whether to ambush the wyvern as it eats, or as it hunts seems to be the question at hand. Now where to find an eagle?
Donovan Friday July 17th, 2009 1:49:12 PM
Donovan just sits there and waits for the grown ups to come up with and institute their plan. Tending to his armor and sword without saying a word.
Zeph AC19 HP 37/37 HeroesLoot3 Friday July 17th, 2009 8:06:28 PM
Zeph gives a slight sigh. At the predicament.
If he can (depending on whether the Wyvern is too far away or not), he will cast Grease aimed at the stag in its talons. (Ref 15 or drop the beastie). Then, if it works, Zeph will duck behind his tree.
If the critter is too far away, then Zeph will wait for Rollo or a Druid to summon a critter to catch the Wyvern's attention to lure it into the group's awaiting maw.
DM Adam Friday July 17th, 2009 8:45:04 PM
The wyvern is definitely too far away for a grease spell.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Friday July 17th, 2009 9:33:39 PM
"Shall we attempt to follow where it headed, or just wait for another?"
Cambar (HP27 of 27 AC26) Saturday July 18th, 2009 9:06:17 AM
"Surely it will nest somewhere high up, to take advantage of its wings. So we should get in position and wait for another to fly by. We don't have a deadline, do we?"
Cambar looks for a place to hide. Maybe a place to hide with her horse.
Hmark and Dathish (sub MikeK) Monday July 20th, 2009 9:58:23 AM
It appears the group plans to wait for critter to come back. Hmark shrugs. He's sat around before, he can do it again.
The archer will take advantage of the time by improving his hidey hole's general hiddenness, as well as its view of the clearing.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Monday July 20th, 2009 10:03:31 AM
Garret also sets up a hiding place from which he can fire down upon the creature and perhaps and area where he can run and charge it when required.
DM Adam Monday July 20th, 2009 12:21:13 PM
As you further improve your hiding spots, you once again hear the cry of the wyvern. Talons empty once again it flies in the distance along the same course as you previously observed..
Camlan AC18 (34/34 HP) and Myl Cal Tuesday July 21st, 2009 1:12:10 AM
Camlan rubs his chin thoughtfully as he watches the creature return so quickly without it's food. He wonders out loud. "Perhaps it has a youngling to feed..." He turns to his twin and whispers. "You still want that eagle to track it?" If she says yes, then Camlan spends the rest of the round calling forth an eagle to help them in their quest.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Tuesday July 21st, 2009 8:48:33 AM
"That could be, Camlan. An a young wyvern should would be a lot easier to kill than a full grown one. I'm not sure if the young one would have what we need, though."
Hmark and Dathish (sub MikeK) Tuesday July 21st, 2009 10:30:20 AM
With a look of annoyance, Hmark watches the wyvern continue on its flight path - way over there.
"Guys, this ain't working," he points out. "It ain't coming anywhere near us. So we gotta go over there." He waves in the direction of the creature. "So, let's go already."
Hmark moves to grab his gear, mount up, and start riding.
DM Adam Tuesday July 21st, 2009 2:14:11 PM
As the group discusses the use of an eagle, Hmark rides off towards the wyvern.
Zeph AC19 HP 37/37 HeroesLoot3 Tuesday July 21st, 2009 2:19:43 PM
Zeph sighs at the plan falling through and decides to mount Shadow and ride after Hmark. "You know... the funny thing is, this may be the right decision." Zeph says with a smile.

Camlan AC18 (34/34 HP) and Myl Cal Wednesday July 22nd, 2009 12:57:49 AM
Sighing, the druid mounts up behind his sister and motions for Myl Cal to join them. Galloping into the beast's den didn't seem the best idea, but sometimes forward motion is what things needed.
Hmark and Dathish (sub MikeK) Wednesday July 22nd, 2009 8:38:54 AM
Hmark looks over his shoulder and grins in relief when he spots the rest of the group following him. "Whaddya know. It worked," he mumbles to himself.
The archer tries to remember how long it took the wyvern to return the last time, with the intention of getting under the concealment of the trees before that interval passes this time. No need to get caught out in the open, after all.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] d20+13=29 ; d20+5=20 ; Wednesday July 22nd, 2009 9:30:26 AM
Garret quickly scrabbles out of his hidey-hole and trots after the others. He keeps watching up as they travel, expecting the wyvern to return and attack them at any moment.

Cambar (HP27 of 27 AC26) Wednesday July 22nd, 2009 4:00:35 PM
Cambar follows the group, and is relieved that Hmark is not leading the party to some lair. Instead, it looks like he is setting up the same ambush, but more on that flight path. Cambar does her best to help the party set up the attack. Maybe making hunting blinds or a lean-to to hide behind, that might look like brush and bramble from the air.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Thursday July 23rd, 2009 9:03:32 AM
Garret watches Cambar and the others as he continues to watch the skies for signs of the great beast.

Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Monday July 27th, 2009 10:38:21 AM
Garret turns quickly where he thought he heard the sound of someone hiding behind him. When he turns, he thought he saw Zeph for a moment, but when he looks, he cannot see anyone. Looking up at the sky, Garret wonders if he is now alone.
Zeph AC19 HP 37/37 HeroesLoot3 Monday July 27th, 2009 11:00:42 AM "Psssst. Hey Garret. Hide, Halfing. We are gonna wait for this thing to land and ambush it. You don't want to be wyvern-food do ya?" Zeph whispers to the monk from his hiding spot.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Tuesday July 28th, 2009 10:01:36 AM
Surprised at Zeph's voice, Garret jumps, then quickly hides in the tall grass. He whispers to Zeph, "Where'd everybody go?"

DM Adam Tuesday July 28th, 2009 5:44:01 PM
I need some clarification, are you trying to intercept the wyvern mid flight path, or are you trying to find it's lair?
Either way I'm going to need a tracking check, and I will need hide checks from everyone attempting to hide.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Wednesday July 29th, 2009 9:48:01 AM
I believe the last plan was that we were heading in the direction we saw the wyvern leave, hoping to find some evidence of its lair, or at least get closer to the lair, so mostly we're wandering along, looking at the skies and watching where we step.

Hmark continues wandering along, looking at the skies, and watching where he steps. His current objective is to get under the wyvern's flight path. Once that's accomplished (or they're close anyway), the group can debate on the next best course.
Of course, the archer is always looking for a nice stand of trees to duck under if the birdie comes back early. [Hide 22]
[ooc - I'm dropping subbing for Dathish. He was supposed to be back by now. Adam/Kathy, can you email him and check his status?]

{ac unit is on the fritz here so can't guarantee I will have regular posting for the rest of the week while the Sears fellas fix it}
DM Adam Wednesday July 29th, 2009 9:22:17 PM
The group travels towards what they best reckon to be the origin point of the wyvern's flight path. The terrain starts to become more hilly, and the trees begin to thin, none the less you manage to find cover as you go. Soon you hear the cry of the wyvern as it appears on the horizon. You have guessed correctly, it looks like it will fly directly overhead. A large stag is in it's talons.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Thursday July 30th, 2009 8:38:08 AM
Garret points up, needlessly, "There it is!"
He dives for cover, then peeks out between some blades of grass to see if the giant beast is about to attack him.
Cambar (HP27 of 27 AC26) Thursday July 30th, 2009 3:12:13 PM
Cambar keeps low and hides. "No use trying to tempt the wyvern to land now, friends! She's plenty busy with that deer. But as soon as she passes, let's set up our ambush, and when she comes out to hunt again, we can bait our trap, and hopefully lure her down within range of our lances."
After the wyvern passes, she tries to find the best place for an ambush, and place to hide.
Hmark d20+5=10 ; d20+13=30 ; d8+1=3 ; Thursday July 30th, 2009 3:32:55 PM
Hmark guides Stardancer into the best brush available and quickly dismounts. The man already has his bow in his hand and is loading an arrow when he hears Cambar's words. He opens his mouth as if to argue the point, but then pauses, and then decides against it.
Hmark hides [10] and waits for the beast to fly past. He keeps an arrow trained on it, though - just in case.
[Ready action, if it comes down for the group, Hmark fires hitting ac30 for 3 hp damage]
DM Adam Thursday July 30th, 2009 6:17:52 PM
Unobstructed the wyvern continues on its path paying the group no mind.
Donovan Thursday July 30th, 2009 7:05:31 PM
Anyone know what the eating ritual of a Wyvern is? ie How long does it go after eating before hunting again? I noticed it has carried 2 animals already so if that's its meal it may be a while before it flies out again, hence maybe following its flightpath and find its lair, setting up an ambush outside it rather than hoping it flies this path again.
Just the opinion of a meathead, says Donovan as he winks to his cousins.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Friday July 31st, 2009 9:14:49 AM
"I don't know how long it will need before it eats again, but it can fly and I cannot. Therefore, I'm not sure getting to its lair is going to be much use, especially trying to sneak up on it. I think we should go with our illusion plan here in this clearing, in the hopes it will come back soon."
Hmark Friday July 31st, 2009 3:24:30 PM
Hmark nods in agreement with Garret. "Sounds good to me."
The archer starts working on establishing a nice hidey hole to attack from, once the trap is sprung.
Zeph AC19 HP 37/37 HeroesLoot3 Sunday August 2nd, 2009 12:28:31 PM "Err. Anyone of you divine-caster types can summon up something more tasty than what the Wyvern has in it's claws? Or should we just try to shoot the bloody thing from here?" Zeph suggests, as he pulls out his bow and peeks out of his hiding place.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Monday August 3rd, 2009 2:03:47 PM
"I thought someone was going to summon an illusion of something that looked tasty and we'd attack it when it landed. That still sounds like a good plan. And if we can't do that, I guess we could put a horse out there for bait."
Cambar (HP27 of 27 AC26) Monday August 3rd, 2009 8:46:06 PM
Cambar stays hid in the hope that the wyvern will fly back on this route, and when it does, they can spring their ambush with the bait of a summoned wyvern snack.

DM Adam Tuesday August 4th, 2009 1:09:43 PM
The night comes and goes, there is a distinct lack of animal life in this area larger than a mouse, you assume the presence of a wyvern teaches any forest creature large enough to stand out to steer clear.
Garret once again notices your new traveling companion, a large owl, perched nearby.
As night turns into day you get about an hour or so to stretch the kinks and cramps out of your muscles from sleeping in your make shift hidey holes, before you hear the cry of the wyvern. Although you can not see it yet, you know it is drawing near.
(Hide checks, I will assume you are taking a ten if you do not roll)
Cambar (HP27 of 27 AC19, 17 charging) d20-3=17 ; Tuesday August 4th, 2009 9:16:25 PM
Cambar is not very good at hiding, despite her rogue level. She has no ranks in Hide and her armor penalty check is a killer. Plus she has a horse!
But she has been spending the last couple weeks trying to find the perfect spot for an ambush. That's gotta count for some kind of bonus, right? Ideally, she is hoping for total cover behind a tree or rock or total concealment in bushes, say. With total cover or concealment, you don't need a roll to hide because you have no line of sight to the enemy.
But if you really need a hide check, gosh darn it ... WOOHOO! natural 20! a 17!
Zeph notices the owl and whispers to Selemar, Dathish, and Camlan: "I'm surre one of you three can talk to that owl over there. He has surely been a resident for some time in the area and may know a thing or two about recent happenings or wyvern spotting.." Zeph suggests.
Besides that, Zeph will remain hidden, and keep a look out the best he can for the wyvern or anyone else.

Camlan AC18 (34/34 HP) and Myl Cal Friday August 7th, 2009 12:28:13 AM
As soon as he sees Dathish casting the summoning spell (that was last round, right?? Summon spells takes a full round), Camlan begins casting Delay poison on Cambar. Having finished before Dathish, the druids finds the other person he was meant to endow with the spell (was it Donovan??) and begins casting once more (this round's action). He makes sure that he keeps himself and his ape companion well out of sight of the wyvern while he does so. He watches to see how effective the groups attacks are before he continues on with his own plans for the combat.

Just as Dash completes his summoning the Wyvern's eyes scan the terrain below. It obviously notices several of you milling around the creature, but it doesn't seem to regard you as a threat.
The creature dives at the divine cow its talons out stretched. In one fluid Flyby Attack it snatches the bait from the ground and injects it with it's virilent poison as it rises back into the sky, although the cow seems to be resisting the poison there is little it can do against the grip of the wyvern.
Those with missle weapons fire at the beast, most fly foul, or bounce off the beasts tough hide. Only Garret is able to solicite a groan from the creature as his stone strikes true.
You have one more chance as the wyvern banks wide to return the way it came.

"Shoot indeed. Someone stop the critter!" Zeph cries
Then Zeph has the idea of casting a little cantrip... If the time allows, he will shoot a Acid Splash at the wyvern. (damage=2)
[OOC: Gosh Darn It! I really wanted to charge it when it landed. I *should* have said that I was readying an action for when it attacked the bait. I didn't anticipate that fly-by attack. My own bad.]
Amazed at the lightning-fast strike with which the wyvern takes the bait, Cambar can only gog, jaw agape, as she is taken off guard.
Well, she is resolved not to let that stop her next time. She readies her attack. The next time that the Wyvern gets within charging distance, she will be ready to charge and attack it!
She plans to charge with no shield and using her lance two-handed. With Ride By Attack, she provokes no AoO. Her attack is at +7, including the +2 charge bonus.
If needed, her charge attack hits AC 17 for 16 damage. If she is lucky to be flanking when she attacks, then she hits AC19 for 20 damage.
After attacking, she continues moving per Ride By Attack.
DM Adam d20+6=21 ; Tuesday August 11th, 2009 2:12:05 AM
As the wyvern circles back you have better luck.
Both Garret and Hmark nail the creature with a barrage of missles, as Selemar calls down lightning from the heavens, although the creature is able to avoid most of the shimmering arc.
Battered the creature doesn't seem to want to stick around and continues on it's course back towards its lair, and out of range.
Cambar (HP27 of 27 AC19, 17 charging) Tuesday August 11th, 2009 8:19:46 AM
"Well, since it is wounded, best we try to follow it to its lair, I guess." Cambar points with her lance, as if to say that the only thing it is good for is pointing.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Tuesday August 11th, 2009 8:36:56 AM
Garret smiles at Cambar, and waits a moment to see if he's going to throw the lance at the retreating beast. When he doesn't, Garret says, "Guess we didn't hurt it very much. But if we move quickly, perhaps it will still be in the nest trying to recover." Garret trots off in the direction the wyvern went, hoping that they can actually get to the nest. He calls back, "Keep your eyes open in case it comes back!" He keeps his sling in his hand, just in case.
Hmark Tuesday August 11th, 2009 10:44:52 AM
Hmark emerges from his hidey hole and watches the wyvern disappear behind the trees. He looks over at Selemar in new found appreciation. "Nice trick," he compliments the druid.
Cambar seems to have the plan. Hmark dutifully climbs up on Stardancer, and trails the rest of the group as they ride to track down the wounded beast.
Zeph AC19 HP 37/37 HeroesLoot3 d20+7=24 ; Tuesday August 11th, 2009 4:11:39 PM "Hmmmm. I should practice some more spells." Zeph says.
"Yep. let's track it as best we can." and with that Zeph hops on his horse and begins galloping after the Wyvern, trying to go as fast as he can and stay as much on its tail as he can muster.

Wildshape rules! He's got a fly of 80 with average manueverability. He should be a little faster than the wyvern
DM Adam Wednesday August 12th, 2009 1:34:01 AM
The wyvern flies off and you easily track it back to its lair, a dark cave in the side of a wooded hill.
Hmark Wednesday August 12th, 2009 9:00:19 AM
Hmark glances at Cambar, bows low, and makes a sweeping gesture toward the cave entrance.
"Women and people encased in steel first," he invites.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Wednesday August 12th, 2009 9:06:11 AM
Garret looks around at the cave mouth and says, "If there's any way we can keep it in there, I think we'll be better off. I don't want to be picked off from the ground like those other animals we saw it rip."
Zeph AC19 HP 37/37 HeroesLoot3 d20+9=14 ; Wednesday August 12th, 2009 4:17:14 PM "I concur Garret. Keeping a flying beast on the ground is a good idea." Then Zeph begins to tie several of his arrows to ropes... just incase it tries to fly away. "Here Hmark. Tie some of your arrows to some rope so that we could pull the sucker out the sky after you turn him into a pin-cushion... if he tries to fly away."
Then, Zeph takes a long, hard look at the cave entrance area. (Take 20 on search = 29)
Cambar (HP27 of 27 AC19, 17 charging) Wednesday August 12th, 2009 4:38:58 PM
Cambar giggles at the arrow and rope idea. "Now, if we had a net, maybe ..."

She has her sword and tower shield up. Horse and lance are left behind.

DM Kathy Monday August 24th, 2009 11:37:41 PM
After a long chase, you reach the entrance to the wyvern's lair. Looking around, you see the usual litter of bones that denotes the home of something large and carniverous.
You prepare your light sources and make your way inside. The cave entrance is large enough to accommodate a wyvern's full wingspan and then some. It leads to a short passage that is nearly as wide. The passage leads to a large, domed chamber--natural, but large and grand enough to rival most royal palaces. Near the center of the chamber, a wide hole drops down into nothingness.
You see no sign of the wyvern in this chamber, and no exits except the hole. You realize that, if you had wings, dropping down into the hole would be an easy task. Without wings...well, you're going to have to improvise.
Zeph AC19 HP 37/37 HeroesLoot3 d20+5=24 ; d20+4=18 ; d20+9=24 ; Tuesday August 25th, 2009 1:48:30 AM
Zeph looks down the hole and thinks for a moment. Then he pulls together his rope that he was planning on hooking the wyvern with and begins to make a knot rope latter out of it (use rope = 18). He then searches for a large boulder to tie it around as well as any signs of traps (search=24).
If he finds a rock to tie his knotted rope around, he will begin climbing slowly (climb=24)
"Any better ideas?" Zeph prompts the group with an open mind.
Cambar (HP27 of 27 AC19) Tuesday August 25th, 2009 7:51:48 AM
"Well, if we had known before setting out," Cambar whispers, "that we would be hunting wyverns, we might have brought a net of strong ropes dyed black. I'da loved to stretch one of those over this opening, and caught us a wyvern when it tried to fly out."
"As it is, I'm wondering if we would be better off waiting for the beastie to emerge here and then attack! We might be able to block off the cave mouth so that it can't fly away. The monster likely has young-uns down below, and will have to come out sooner rather than later to hunt again."
"But if we try to climb down, we'll be at its mercy as we drop down into the nest."
"So I suggest setting up an ambush here."
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:25/25] Tuesday August 25th, 2009 8:57:55 AM
Garret walks over and looks down the hole. "Sure looks deep. I think we'll have trouble with it picking us off climbing down the rope, but the thing can fly up here, so that might be tough, too. I think its worth waiting a bit to see if it comes back up any time soon. I see a good hiding place right over there."
Hmark Tuesday August 25th, 2009 10:18:59 AM
Hmark idly scratches at the goatee on his chin. "I'm with them," he replies to Zeph. "Its gotta come up here and through that passageway sooner or later. Let's take her then."
Zeph AC19 HP 37/37 HeroesLoot3 Tuesday August 25th, 2009 3:22:36 PM
Zeph shrugs. "Fine by me." Then he pulls his knotted rope up and forms a lasso out of it and smiles as he thinks of how intertaining it would be if he lassoed the wyvern and had the entire party of adventurers trying to pull it out of the sky...
then he thinks with horror : It may actually come to that....
DM Kathy Tuesday August 25th, 2009 11:44:00 PM
Looking around, you see that it would be easy enough to tie off a rope and head down into the darkness. What would happen next, of course, is anybody's guess.
Cambar suggests that perhaps waiting for the wyvern to emerge would be a better idea. You agree to the plan and settle in to wait out the beast.
After about 30 minutes of waiting, however, you begin to hear sounds echoing from the entrance to the lair (the direction you came from). You hear the clank and rattle of armor, and the murmur of low voices. The sounds seem to be getting closer.

As she does so, the woman in spiked full plate says, peeking out from behind her massive shield, "Look, I don't know who you fellows are, but it's time for you to leave. Go on, scat! Go away! It'll go easier on you all that way."
Cambar pauses, clearly thinking, and then says, "Look, play this smart. If we get killed by the wyvern, then we will likely have wounded it for you, and you can kill it easy like. If we defeat the wyvern, odds are we'll be hurt, and we'll be easier for you to beat up on the way out. So be clever little fellows and get out now."

Cambar steps forward and positions her shield. She also does some talking, and since her player knows perfectly will that a rushed Diplomacy check is a full-round action, tries to put one over on the DM. :) The toughs in black don't seem inclined to listen to her, however.
Zeph and Hmark let their arrows do the talking. In just a few seconds, three shafts are sticking out of the chest of bad guy #1, and he drops to the ground, quite dead.
The other toughs don't seem all that demoralized by the death of their companion. "So, that's how you want to play it," one of them sneers, and they move in to attack.
Tough #2 charges Camber, and hits AC 24 for 11 damage.
#3 moves forward and hurls a javelin at Selemar, but misses.
#4 moves forward and throws a javelin at Garrett, hitting AC 22 for 3 damage.
Then a roar from below confirms everyone's worst fears. The wyvern has come to play. For some reason, it decides Selemar is its target this round, and stab at him with the nasty stinger on the end of its tail. Luckily, it misses.

Cambar takes a whack with her new sword if and or when the opportunity presents itself. AoO at +3 to hit +unknown weapon mods: Hits AC18 at least for -- if it is a longsword -- 7 damage plus possible unknown mods.
Then, for her action, she will fight defensively with armor spikes and new sword and shield. At Zeph's urging, Garrett moves to flank Bad Guy #4. His foot lashes out, catching the man in a vulnerable spot. We will never know whether it would have stunned him or not, because Zeph follows up with a wicked cut from his rapier. #4 slumps to the cave floor.
Hmark fires a couple of arrows at Cambar's opponent, one of which hits. Cambar attemtps to bull rush the man into the pit, but is unable to generate a sufficient head of steam.
#3 decides it's a good idea to get away from the hole. He shifts over and attacks Cambar, but misses.
#2 shifts and attacks Zeph, just barely missing.
The enraged wyvern swoops again, this time targeting bad guy #3. The poison sting misses, and the beast screams with rage.

(ooc: damage Zeph has caused this combat = 56 Ignore the d20+11, that was a mistake)
After deflecting yet another swipe from the armed man, Zeph decides that the armed men are less of a threat than the wyvern itself. In order to avoid attacks of opportunity and get into a flanking/backstabbing position, he tumbles (Tumble check = 30. natural 20... do I get a bonus for that?) to square R-10, flanking the foe with man#3 (which is ok right?)
If you cannot flank an enemy with a mutual enemy, then Zeph will shout, "Hey Cambar! Flank the beastie with me? These dopes have no chance of hitting us, but this creature surely may!"
Then, after his tumbling episode, Zeph will stab at the critter's vital organs (Hit AC 21, +2 from flanking. Damage = 13)
(ooc: the Wyvern is able to be hit with melee right? If not, then Zeph will just stay in his square and stab man#2)

Cambar shouts, "I'm bad wounded AND there's a wyvern less than ten feet from me! You want I should flank this dope here?!? And ignore the wyvern?!? No thanks!"
The fighter uses a standard action to put her tower shield between herself and the diverse physical threats around her.
With her move action, she moves 20 feet to P10, relying on her total cover to forestall any AoOs she would otherwise have provoked.
She looks around. Where is the entrance to the cave? How wide is it? How high? If she stood right smack dap in the middle of it, would the wyvern be able to squeeze past her? How about the last two humanish foes?

Hmark sinks another arrow into #3.
Garret slugs #2, who goes down in a heap.
Cambar again retreats behind her shield and edges cautiously toward the exit.
[OOC: The exit is in the southeast corner of the map. It would be awkward for the wyvern to attack anyone there. It might decide just to bowl them over instead.]
Bad Guy #3 is in a world of hurt. His companions are down, and there's a wyvern between him and the exit. He slashes at the beast, just missing, then shifts to try to put some cover between himself and Hmark's arrows.
The wyvern is large, but not especially maneuverable. It takes a swipe at Zeph with its poison sting, then it is forced to land.

Zeph takes advantage of Garrett's flank and stabs the creature in a vital spot. The wound bleeds profusely.
Cambar re-enters the fray in spectacular fashion, landing a solid blow to the wyvern that actually staggers it.
Selemar moves his sphere toward the wyvern, but can't quite reach it. [The sphere can only move 30 feet per turn.]

Garret watches nervously as Cambar and Zeph back away from the creature, leaving only tiny Garret standing facing the giant beast. He glances again at the monster. Seeing the creature is wounded, Garret presses his attack, hoping the creature will fall before it turns its full force on Garret.
He turns and kicks a foot out towards the creature's belly and tries to follow up with a fist to the buffeting wings.
DM Kathy Tuesday September 8th, 2009 11:42:25 PM Zeph moves back and casts a spell for protection, while Cambar retreats again behind the cover of her shield and begins making for the exit.
Their companions are on the case. Garrett unleashes a flurry of blows, while Hmark lands two superb shots. With a final, earth-shaking roar, the mighty wyvern crashes to the cave floor.
Seeing his opportunity, wounded bad guy #3 makes a beeline for the exit.
Hmark(ac18, 35/35hp) Wednesday September 9th, 2009 8:52:01 AM
Hmark is more than happy to let the last guy run off. In the sudden quiet of the cavern he takes stock of his comrade's conditions and concludes they're all beat up pretty badly. The archer, after making a face at the half-empty quiver on his back, approaches Cambar with a vial.
"It ain't much, but its all I got," he notes, offering the potion. [CLW]
The man looks to Zeph, and ticks off the list of tasks that still seem unfinished. "Cut off tail, check these three, go down hole and see if any goodies are down there, and guard our backs in case nimrod comes back with some more buddies."

Zeph notices guy#3 start to book it and Zeph's eye twitches in anger. Zeph screams, "You hold it right there! I have some questions for you!" And with that, Zeph casts Grease at the man's feet (Reflex DC 15 or fall prone. or DC 10 balance check to walk through the 10foot square at half speed... the spell also says that the DM should adjust the difficulty by circumstance... so maybe since he is running, it would be a bit harder to avoid falling?)
Whether he succeeds at staying on his feet or not, Zeph will charge at the man, grab him by his collar and slam him up against the cave wall.
Then Zeph remembers something... it sounded like more people were entering the cave while we were fighting the Wyvern. "Do we have other visitors?" Zeph asks the man... if he catches him.
If the enemy warrior has already run off past Cambar, she will not run after him. But if he has not yet passed her, then she readies an attack if he tries it. She shouts, "Stop it or I'll make you stop!"
That's a readied attack and a possible AoO as he runs by. Two attacks at -2 for the Tower Shield, with AC23: hits AC9 and 17; if the AoO hits, that's for 5 hp damage.
If he falls down near Cambar due to Grease, she will tell him to stay down or she'll smack him. Same rolls, but +4 due to his being prone.
If she ends up attacking him while he is standing, but off balance in the Grease, then he loses his Dex bonus, and she adds another 4 hp sneak attack damage.
After all that, she is grateful for the healing potion. That's 6 healing, bringing her to 8 hp.
She asks if anyone has some anti-toxin ... for the save she feels coming in about 8 rounds!
She thinks there are baby wyverns down below, and suggests using saps and such to capture them. She says she would LOVE to train a wyvern as a mount, or at the least, sell the pups.
She makes a mental note to buy a continual flame pebble, a vial or three of antitoxin, and a sap next time she's in town!
Then she starts thinking about having a wyvern pup to train as a mount. "Imagine me and my lance spearing enemies on a dive! Oh, that would be sweet!"
DM Kathy Thursday September 10th, 2009 12:30:15 AM Hmark is willing to let the final tough flee, but Zeph isn't so charitable. The man isn't quite running flat-out, but the Grease spell catches him off guard. He falls with a thump. He tries to scramble back to his feet, but a blow from Cambar discourages that. He subsides, panting, and holds up his hands in surrender.

You shoo "Corporal" Ranel out of the cave, and he seems glad to leave.
Zeph searches the bodies of the fallen. The men all have good-quality armor and weapons that are probably worth something. They might even be magical.
In the belt pouch of the one called "Sarge," Zeph finds a letter that reads:
Sergeant,
Our new contract begins immediately. His Majesty is most anxious to stop a group of adventurers from retreiving the sting of a wyvern. The creature is said to live to the east of here, in the hills. His Majesty's advisors have formed an alliance with a group of orcs; however, he is not confident in their ability to stop or slow the adventurers. Let us show him what the Sons of Shadow can do!
If you cannot intercept the adventuers in time to prevent them from getting the wyvern sting, you must by all means stop them from obtaining the Opal Sword. We will, of course, be setting up additional defenses, but your squad is our first line of attack. I know you will not fail in your task.
The signature of the letter is a scrawl; a "C" followed by an unintelligible wavy line.
You are still curious about the inner lair of the wyvern, and make preparations to lower a rope. As you do so, however, there is another clatter at the entrance, and a very wounded Donovan staggers in.

Donovan {9 ~ 52hp} Monday September 14th, 2009 9:56:27 AM
Looking up, he meekly gives a word of thanks to Selemar.
Well, it's true, you took a right and I headed left.....and got lost, but I came across some of those hooligans, pointing to the black clad folks. Well, one thing led to another and they weren't too friendly you see, and they didn't like my stories and jokes so we proceeded to see whose sword was sharper and faster. Now mind you, I was alone and they were many. I managed to fell a couple of them, and wound twice as many more, but their shear numbers overwhelmed me. So, I decided that retreating was the best valor but not before they got in some well targeted shots. It took all I had to find you all, which I did by the sounds of combat ringing off the walls and floor.
Then looking up at Cambar, he gives a wink and says: that's my story and I am sticking to it.
Hmark(ac18, 35/35hp) Monday September 14th, 2009 10:03:05 AM
Hmark barely glances at Cambar and Donovan, and quickly resumes his watch over the descending Zeph.
"Probably got an opal in the pommel," he responds to Garret, as his eyes flick around the edge of the light given off by Zeph's torch.
DM Kathy Tuesday September 15th, 2009 12:19:01 AM
You wonder about the meaning of the Opal Sword.
[Now would be a really good time for Knowledge checks. :) History, Geography, and Local come immediately to mind.]
You begin the arduous task of healing yourselves with no cleric in the party.
When you eventually make your way down into the heart of the wyvern's den, you find no eggs, and no hatchlings. You do, however, find a tidy little hoard of coins and gems, worth 3,000 gp total.

[Untrained knowledge check - 10]
Once it becomes obvious no more critters or people will be jumping out of crevices and corners, Hmark stows Red and sets to aiding the goody hauling operation.
If no one else has gotten to it, he'll also work on freeing the wyvern's stinger from the rest of it.
And once all that's done, he looks around. "So, time to head home?" he asks Zeph.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:13/25] d20+1=9 ; Tuesday September 15th, 2009 9:28:52 AM
Garret says, "Opal in the pommel? I suppose. Doesn't sound like anything I've heard of before. Somehow I think that when we return with this wyvern poison that we're going to have to get this sword. I wouldn't mind picking it up on the way back, if someone knows anything about it."

Zeph AC22 (Shield) HP 15/37 HeroesLoot4 d20+5=20 ; d20+4=23 ; Tuesday September 15th, 2009 9:58:58 AM
Zeph climbs up from the pit with a large money-bag slung over his shoulder. He looks like he just ransacked a bank. He plops the 3000gold on the ground and then begins gathering the equipment from the three armed, dead, men.
Zeph casts Detect Magic and looks the items over, studying each intently (and thus taking 20 on any attempt to identify auras...)
Then he pops open a book he bought from a Centaur quite some time ago, entitled, The History of New Elennia and begins flipping through it. After that, he pops open his book on magic given to him by Lady Dulcet and looks through it.... and thinks hard about opals.
(Knowledge Arcana =20. Any other knowledge that is useful = 23))

Knowledge: History ~ 2, Geography ~ 6, Local ~ 1...... I don't know squat!
Safely follows the others into the beasts hoarde room and makes sure to stand off to the side so as not to get in anyones way lest I recieve a paper cut and die. Will pull out some rags and a waterskin and start trying to remove the blood.
Cambar (HP8 of 27, AC23) d20+4=5 ; Tuesday September 15th, 2009 10:49:53 AM
"Opal sword ... opal sword ... have I heard that before?" asks Cambar, thoughtfully. [Know Local check 5]
"I don't think so!"
She is clearly disappointed there are no pups. "Maybe another time," she says.
DM Kathy Wednesday September 16th, 2009 12:10:08 AM
As Hmark hacks the stinger from the beast, he tries to remember something about an Opal Sword. The name does seem vaguely familiar to you, as if you've heard a tale or two about it. Some kind of legendary weapon, but you don't remember any more than that.
Garrett's memories are much the same. You think you've heard of it, but the context is vague. Donovan and Cambar can add nothing.
Zeph looks over the gear from the fallen foes. Each had a magic sword and magic armor (+1).
Zeph then puts some though into the Opal Sword. From your magical training, you realize that there is nothing specific about opals per se that would make the sword more magical or give it special powers. Whoever made the sword probably just thought they looked nice.
Your research tells you that the Sword was used in this very area by Sgreth Tazkar, a lesser-known hero from long ago. It is now believed to reside somewhere in the kingdoms of the western Windborne Hills, but your are not sure which one.
You could head that way and poke around for a bit, and see what you turn up. The western Hills are not far away at all. Or, you could head back to Cinnamon Valley for more research. That would take longer, but would give you a better idea of where you're going.
Zeph AC22 (Shield) HP 15/37 HeroesLoot4 Wednesday September 16th, 2009 1:08:37 AM
(OOC: Could one of the swords perhaps be a Rapier so that I could use the upgrade? And perhaps another could be any other useful +1sword-like item that someone else needs... bastard sword? I guess for money-calculating purposes, the armor would be Breast Plates or full plate?)
Zeph begins hauling all the armor over to the horses and tying it up to them in various locations. "These are worth at least a thousand gold each." Zeph says if anyone looks at him weird.
"So... as for the Opal Sword. It seems that is what is required next... according to this man who's name starts with a C. But something bothers me... someone is out there trying to actively stop us. Could this letter be a lie perhaps? Trying to send us in the wrong direction? Or would we be saving time by just going straight for the sword from here rather than trekking it all the way back to Lady Dulcet first? I really don't know what to do at this point. But I think I would vote we go west if my arm was twisted into making a decision... " Zeph says
And perhaps we could find a healer to hire along with us. Zeph thinks to himself as an afterthought.
Woldian League of Adventurers? I have to look into this... Zeph also thinks, remembering a small chapter on common organizations in the Wold in his history book.
Cambar (HP8 of 27, AC23) Wednesday September 16th, 2009 1:25:12 AM
"Hey wait!" Cambar says, as the talk turns to looking for the sword. "What about the wyvern stinger? Don't we have to deliver it to someone before it spoils?"
OOC: I'd like to go back to town for buying stuff. And what kinds of swords, shields, and armor that is would be good too.
OOC: Cambar wears her WLA badge openly. Zeph might see it and ask her about it.
Selemar [ac 18 hp 23/23] d8+3=11 ; Wednesday September 16th, 2009 1:50:11 AM
Cambar gets a whack with the stick of health (11hp healed)
"I think we should take the stinger back, maybe taking some venom along in case we need to flavour our banana. West sounds plausible, but it can probably wait...Probably"
Cambar (HP19 of 27, AC23) Wednesday September 16th, 2009 8:36:04 AM
"Thanks! Thanks!" [OOC: It is a wand of CLW with caster level 3?]
[OOC: Kathy, do we have an arcanist with the party, or do we have to pay for those Identifies?]
Hmark(ac18, 35/35hp) Wednesday September 16th, 2009 10:46:39 AM
"I say go back to Lady Dulcet," Hmark opines. "Get this thing [the stinger] off our backs, trade in that loot for some cash, restock [he glances at his depleted quiver], and get a better idea of what's next."
Donovan {9 ~ 52hp} Wednesday September 16th, 2009 11:19:44 AM
Im for going back to town to 1, turn in the stinger which, as you would probably know is going to start stinking to the high heavens shortly, and probably attract things we don't want to attract and 2, so some of us can get some medical attention.
And restocking sounds like a good plan too.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:22 HP:13/25] Wednesday September 16th, 2009 12:35:38 PM
"Nice stuff," says Garret, looking through the coins for any gems, but ignoring the armor and weapons. After the conversation, Garret adds, "Yes, let's get this stuff back to the Lady. I'd not feel comfortable carrying such a poison around while traveling any longer than I need to!"
Zeph AC22 (Shield) HP 15/37 HeroesLoot4 Wednesday September 16th, 2009 1:09:59 PM "Ok then. To Dulcet it is." Zeph says, agreeing with everyone else.
"Hey Cambar... mind if I ask about that WLA badge of yours? What is the group exactly and why did you join?" Zeph asks as the group packs up and starts the trek back to Jarlwolf.
