Edmund (HP: 26/44, AC: 20), Mage Armour, Message, See Invisibility, Fly, Invisibility, Inspire Courage +2, Shield, Resistance Monday September 14th, 2009 10:30:30 PM
Edmund satisfies himself by giving pointless and meaningless directions regarding the barricade, which are hopefully ignored by any of the people working on it.
"I know all about this blocking such things from my time in the armed forces," he says loftily. "You want to batten down that hatch there," he says, gesturing towards part of the wall. "And pile more keelhaul onto the boilers just there. Avast!"
Blissfully ignorant of the fact that he is being ignored, Edmund continues to point and occasionally say "Avast!" in a state of great excitement.
Once the work is done, Edmund congratulates himself on his successful direction of the endeavours, and immediately sets about the process of dinner.
"Has anyone brought anything? Some bacon, perhaps? And maybe some mutton, and bread, and a bit of cheese, and drinks--musn't forget the drinks?"
A sidelong glance at the crispy Spumanider gives him cause to quip grimly, "If not, there's always Spider Fricasse fresh off the grill. But I'd prefer the bacon!"
Wynum {22/42hp. Message, Daylight, Delay. Poison, Pending DC20/5Str poison} Monday September 14th, 2009 11:57:28 PM
As the rush of activity after going back settles down, Wynum realizes what's going with some alarm. "Oh, well, are you serious about resting here and now?"
Trotting to the barricades, he thoughtfully considers the piled stones blocking the exits and the stinky pallets. "If there are indeed more foes around, we're just trapping ourselves in. If Mettik and friends are still alive, they won't wait for us to drop on them tomorrow, nice and fresh. They'll wait for reinforcement from the Preserve and the bowels of this cave, stay outside our barricades, and ambush us when we move out. That's what I'd do, that's what they did this night, that's what the shapechangers did back in the park."
Stomping the goo and spider bits with his hooves, he continues: "Thanks to the spells, we have smashed a dozen well-trained bugbears and the biggest spiders I'll ever see in my life with very little loss."
He then gestures to the two heavily-armed ladies as well as the halfling. "Do we really look miserable and scared?"
Obviously not in his best spirit in a damp cave, he seems disheartened, as he slowly retrieves camp items from his bags. "We're about to camp in the enemy's lair, and forfeit the initiative once again. For what?"
Julian Tuesday September 15th, 2009 1:29:16 AM
"Yeah, what he said."
"If we do camp out for the next few hours then, Wynum, do you want to keep watch with me in the entrance area. An enemy will be outlined against the light coming in, and we can use our bows to pick 'em before they get to close. It is hard going over the loose stones here - which you'd know if you weren't flying."

Figuring each pallet is six feet long and about two feet high, Revi begins to stack each one on top of the other, seven or eight high, then does it again right behind it, but offset to fill the seven foot wide space--using what little remains of her fly spell. When that was done, she digs a small trench and puts the edge of a pallet into and then props it against the twin towers of pallets, to act as a brace--she does this several times shoring up both the north and east sides. For good measure, she rolls a few sitting rocks to act as bollards at the base of the towers and at the ends of the braces so they don't slip. Furthermore, she searches the bugbear goods for anything like a bottle or mug-- bottles and mugs with rocks in them will be placed precariously high on the pallets and will fall if the towers are jiggled or moved in any way, giving an advance warning--or at least that is the plan.
"We should camp in the barracks area, it's spread out so we don't get clumped together and get caught in an area spell if that occurs. Watches should be set to guard the main entrance and the rear entrance."
Looking to Jules, Revi concludes as she settles down, "By my count I have 18 points to your 8, Jules. Sound about right?"
Revi wishes to take the last watch as she is quite fatigued and could use a good rest--that, and spiders mostly come out at night and it was still daylight out.
Looking out of the cave into the daylight beyond, Revi wished her wolf companion well. She had released him from his bond earlier in the day because she was unsure if she would be coming back alive from this venture, and did not want him to wait forever for her return. If she got out of this alive, she would call for him again. Survival roll: 29 Spot: 22 Listen: 20

((OOC @ Florian: You understand where they are camping, right? The barricade is between the party and the chasm. The only way the party could be trapped is if a bunch of monsters somehow climb up or land on the ledge without anyone noticing this happening.
Also, guys, can we try to wrap up the resting posts quickly please? If we've made a decision via e-mail and IC as well, I don't see any reason to spend several days prolonging it by going over it again. That is just going to bring about the delay that some people are keen to avoid. Since we're going to rest, give the DM the info he wants and take a posting day and rest: let's not take a week to argue about whether or not to rest. Again.
I won't lie: I'm beginning to tire of the seemingly endless attempts to argue against every rest the party takes, even when a majority is in favour of it. Edmund is even less pleased, as shall now be seen.))
A tired, injured, hungry, and increasingly irritable Edmund is at last provoked to anger by Wynum's attempt to begin anew the arguments about whether to press on or not.
"Yes, we do intend to rest here. We do not intend to spend further time arguing it and discussing it again. We've reached a decision. I'm sorry if you don't like it, but it's settled. Four people want to stay, so we stay. I know you're new here, but this is how things work."
"If, as you fear, they are all bunched up outside the barricades tomorrow, so much the better, for then they will have to advance over the barricade into a group of heavily armoured--and fully refreshed--adventurers who only yesterday butchered three dozen of their friends. I suspect if it comes to it, we can probably kill another three dozen tomorrow--and every day thereafter, until there simply are no more of them left. Good of them to come to us rather than making us search for them, I should think!"
"I am happy to go on killing them as long as our supplies last. If and when we run out, we can eat the foes we've killed. At any rate, I will kill them tomorrow, and the day after, and the day after that. I intend to go on killing them each and every day until there are either no more of them left or they realise the futility of endlessly assailing invisible flying barbarians. I do not mind this at all. What I do mind is idiotically rushing into an abyss which has only one known escape, and that is up a lengthy series of ladders ((or staircases)) when no one in the party can fly any longer and there are virutally no more spells and everyone is injured!"
"The devil take these endless, obdurate, zealous, importunate, fervent exhortations for imprudent haste!" Edmund exclaims. "Rush on, rush on, rush on, and get yourself and everyone else killed. Well, go throw yourself into the dashed abyss if you want to poke about the bottom so much. We'll see you in the morning, once you've sated your desire for amateur spelunking!"
"Now enough of this ridiculous banter!" Edmund finishes angrily. "Let's have some dinner and get to sleep! Unless you'd rather jaw about it some more--in which case do please go outside so the rest of us can get some shut-eye before tomorrow--this being a necessary requirement if you are to go in once again with spells enough to protect you and make you believe that you can do anything, however mad or ill-advised."

Thar patiently listens to Edmund and Wynum's debate, and shakes his head at the conflict that he wishes to avoid. After all, the majority has made a decision and the time for debate is over. Gently, but firmly, he says, "Friends, we're wasting time arguing while we should be preparing our redoubt. As Edmund said, we've made our decision, so it's time to work..."
While the others move items to blockade the rooms, he checks on the condition of everyone to ensure that their wounds are at least healed. He knows that they'll gain a few points from resting, but if their rest is interrupted and they need to fight, he wants them to be ready...
First, of course, he checks on his beloved Ruby to ensure that she is OK. She is only missing a few points, so he'll move to Wynum and Edmund, and proceeds to heal them somewhat...

Maybe he just needs a good woman to spend those lonely nights with, lucky for me, I'm not a good woman." Revi busts out laughing, but reins it in, fearing she may alert the denizens of the chasm below.

"Thank you," he says to the party's Cleric. "Now I can get some rest! Tomorrow, we'll see what new tricks I can pull out of my hat. Julian needs a chance to even the score if he's running ten behind."
With that, the mage finishes munching on hard tack and turns to his bedroll to get some much-needed rest.

For some reason her eyesight has changed and she can see things in black and white in the darkness, but can also benefit from her human eyesight.
She is muching on a biscuit when Thar comes over and she smiles at him, but there is still a worried expression on her face. The healing is appreciated and she captures his head to kiss him gently for it. "Thanks love." Unless he brings it up she will not mention what is bothering her, but try to mull it over on her own.
When the time for her watch is ready she finds that even when peering into the darkness she can see rather well, though not in color. Shrugging she move between the two forms of sight and gets the giggles at one point because of it.

It seems he's almost about to embark on the lack of biscuits and tea but chews on his rations instead. When he feels the Delay Poison fading, he quickly imbibes an Antitoxin vial (before the second effect) but nonethless has to fold and lie down for a moment, for the first time ever since he joined the party, as he collapses under the weight of his gear. "I have noticed that I can see in the dark, though it is only in black and white. It is good because I was a liability in the darkness but I also have to admit that it scares me." She is not really upset as much as a little scared and maybe a little excited as well.
Glancing to Thar she shrugs her shoulders and smiles. "Maybe I worry about nothing and it is just part of my wandering life starting to take hold." Snuggling in closer to him, her voice is extremely quiet and still filled with a little fear. "Just hold me for a few minutes."
Julian Wednesday September 16th, 2009 9:37:27 PM
To Revi, the halfling barbarian states, "I used to rely on Kendry to count things for me. He and Podo taught me my numbers and letters. I guess I need more practice with them again."
To counter the centaur's moaning Julian talks to Wynum about bows and arrows and shooting, and about using the lance. "I think I'll use the lance next time we fight someone. I can make little Shark here," scratching his familiar's ears, "big enough for me to ride on, and I think he like being the battle too. We could charge in together with our lances when our bows aren't so useful."
Later, when the watch is over Julian tries to catch up with the mage. "Hey Edmund, show me how you cast that Fly spell. There was something familiar about it that I think I can do for myself."
DM Robert - Camping Out Wednesday September 16th, 2009 9:59:20 PM
OOC: sorry guys, I've had sick kids all week. I can find a few minutes here and there throughout the day rather than a couple of hours at night when the kids go to bed.
A solid barricade is set up to block off the Chasm from the remainder of the entrance chambers. Julian and Wynum watch the entrance as others try to get comfortable and rest in the Barracks.
For Thursday's post I would like to sort out: How long will the Mithril Order be camping in here? Are you all in the Barracks? Who is on Watch? When? Where? Spot and Listen checks, and anything else you feel will be advantageous. Is someone watching the barricades? The Lair? The Barracks?
Thar - sorry, as DM I was lazy with posting Julian's hp - but he didn't lose any (that I recall atm).

{Because the point of this resting (at least I think so because that's precisely what I object) is to recover the spells, we have no choice but to rest for the remaining of the day and then the whole night. The archives are not 100% clear, but it seems we left the camp shortly after day break and spell review, which ought to be no more than 2h ago, so we're in for 22h of rest?}
Wynum will hold guard with Julian for 5 hours and help with fixing barricades, then (after the poison hits), will stay around camp as backup for the rest of the day, then sleep through the night, taking no watch in his condition (Ranged combat's not that bad. It's melee and movement that will stink. Also forget about carrying Julian!)
Load penalties with bags removed: Bow -5/-3, no tricks. Lance -5/-5. ACP-3, Speed 55'.
DM Robert: we left camp around 2 hours after lunch, and combat took a matter of minutes.

Once Edmund has had eight hours of sleep, he wakes up and rubs his eyes rather groggily. After sitting on his bedroll in a sort of stupor for a few minutes, he bestirs himself enough to take out his spellbooks and begin reading over them.

After reading his spellbook, Edmund puts it away and dusts himself off before taking the time to roll up and stow his bedroll. He takes absolutely no notice whatsoever of Ruby and Thar, and remains entirely ignorant as to their romantic involvement. If he was told, Edmund would probably be momentarily shocked--after which he would forget it once again.
"Ahem!" he says to everyone who is (or isn't) paying attention. "We're not going to fly today. Just so you know. Seeing as everyone is well-rested, I thought a more diverse selection of spells might be more practical. Never know what you'll find in the pit, after all. So, I propose that we go down carefully, and if things get dicey and we need to retreat, I think I can cover everyone long enough for you to get up the stairs."
"Also," he adds. "I've worked out something that I've been meaning to try for a while now. It can wait until later, but I think I have come up with a way to save us rather a lot of time."
"There'salsothepossibilitythatwemightjustvanishwithoutatrace," the Wizard adds quickly and quietly, before clearing his throat and smiling. "No worries, though. I'm mostly fairly generally certain everything will be fine! Now what about breakfast?"

The rest period passes uneventfully. Perhaps more through paranoia than anything out of the usual, but each person does notice all the little spiders that inhabit the space. Tiny spiders, tiny webs. Nothing harmful or sinister, buy you do notice them now.
The platform on the other side of the chasm has, as Ruby noticed, a 'drawbridge' that swings around to connect to this side. It would require at least two people to swing it round. There is then a series of ladders to reach the bottom, and a rope and pulley system available to raise or lower goods on a pallet.
Anything else you need to know before we move on?
Edmund (HP: 48/48, AC: 12) Friday September 18th, 2009 11:57:34 PM
"Eddie-baby?" the Wizard says with one eyebrow arched as Revi walks away.
Edmund notes the spiders with distaste. "Almost enough to put one off their breakfast," he says dismally. "Almost."
When Julian remarks that he'll be flying, Edmund is more than a little surprised. "Well, I'm glad someone around here is as attentive as you have proven yourself to be! Well done! That's one less person I have to worry about giving fly to."
Leaning down, he whispers conspiratorily, "Wynum not so much good for carrying halflings about, and one can't very well broach the topic of an S-A-D-D-L-E, can one? Flying is much better. Good on you for learning it!"
Putting his hands on his hips, Edmund stares up at the ceiling as he mentally goes over the spells he memorised for the day. "Ahh..." he says aloud. "One short! One of them will have to go without."
He then looks at Revi and Ruby in turn, narrowing his eyes as he tries to work something out in his head.
* * *
"Right so," the Wizard says after a few moments of thought. "Ready to go a'hunting? Maybe we can have two of you fly across the chasm to extend that platform. Just a thought; any other ideas?"

But Edmund, I must remind you of what happens when 2 praying mantis' mate, especially to the male..."
He does add, in seriousness, "Ed, I would like to be able to fly, especially to get up and down the pit in a hurry..."
Since things are quiet this morning, he gives Ruby a brief kiss and prays for her continued safety. He quickly moves to the opening to the pit and says, "Well, I'll help scout down there, but I'd like one of you burly types next to me... Do we need to go down using the pulley or should we use the ladders? Or should we check the other side first? I move that we check the pit, but to prevent being cut off, we should move the drawbridge to this side and then disable it temporarily until we are ready to go across..."

Sighing, Revi set about the task of making a hole through her barraicade--taking some of the braces away, the bottles and mugs for early warning, then pushing one tower to the side so everyone could slide through. Of course before that she made sure there was nothing waiting for them on the other side of the barricade. Spot: 16 Listen: 15
Edmund (HP: 48/48, AC: 12) Saturday September 19th, 2009 5:37:42 PM
Upon hearing talk of marriage, Edmund looks at Thar in horror. "M-M-M-Marriage!?" he exclaims. "No thank you!"
As everyone clamors for the ability to Fly, Edmund suppresses a sigh.
"Well," he begins, "two people--and only two--are going to be able to fly. I know it would be easier to reach the bottom if we all flew. It would be easier to chop through monsters if we were all permanently invisible. It would be easier to hit them if we all had True Strike and Haste, and easier still if I had unlimited fireballs to roast them with before they got close. But we can't have everything."
"We're going into the unknown, and that means I need to prepare a more diverse selection of spells. This isn't a frontal assault against a group of bugbears. Rather, it's something we know not what. So I need several options at my disposal. Therefore, we're all going to walk. And when Fly is called for, the people who need it will get it. I promise!"
"If I could make it possible for you all to permanently fly, I would." the Wizard says a little more gently. "Trust me, I really would! But I can't. And to keep us all safe in every eventuality, we can't all Fly this time. I'm sorry. There are boots you can buy, though, that give you the ability to fly. I heartily recommend them--though they cannot compare with my amazing magical prowess, of course!"
Wynum {40/51hp. Str 7, med load} Saturday September 19th, 2009 5:57:15 PM
Wynum ponders for a long time whether or not he should leave his jug of wine among the numerous items he leaves behind to lighten his load. Trembling like a still-wet foal on his deceptively muscular body, pale and quivering, he gets near the slope reaching to the chasm, then turns back and sighs.
"For the one time I could have helped to get you across or down... Sorry lads, I would risk the ladders if I knew I could climb the wall as a backup. But I really don't feel I can do it right now, even pulling my bowstring or lifting my lance is hard. But I can stand guard here and protect the bridge, as well as the entrance, so you won't get flanked if I can help it. However, I'm too weak to hoist you up from the chasm if need arises, so don't count on that."
Ruby [HP: 72/74 - AC: 24(25dodge)(cover)][] Saturday September 19th, 2009 5:59:28 PM
Ruby heard the banter and was about to offer to be one of the bridesmaids when that thought is crushed. Pouting for show, she kicks the ground. "You two are no fun. I thought I was finally going to get to be a bridesmaid at a wedding." Then she sobers as she thinks of her twin brother and how she will never get to see him again or go to his wedding. Her hands clench into fists and her knuckles go white as she fights to bring her emotions back under control.
That is even easier to accomplish when Thar steps over and kisses her. She has known him for such a short time, but he makes her melt when he does that. Shaking her head, the anger still simmers just behind a locked door that will not hold it forever.
Slipping over to Revi, she watches the other woman for a few minutes and then decides to give it a go. "If you want to talk about that reason sometime, I promise I won't laugh." She use to talk and share stuff with her cousins, but she has seen none of them for a long time now...it hurts not to have family close. It makes you feel all alone.

Revi studies Ruby's eyes for a moment and then quips, "Yes, you'll laugh, I know you will."
DM Robert - Camping Out Saturday September 19th, 2009 9:27:08 PM
Edmund is ready to go, but! Julian wanders back into the Barracks area to report matter-of-factly that, judging by the moon nearing its zenith, it is nearly midnight. It all sounds a bit ominous - a dark cave, spiders bigger than Rabbitsfoot's office and cells, web-slingers and spell-casters. There's still those tiny spiders around, and the stickiness of drying ichor, a charred corpse and chunks of spider. And to further assault the senses is the smell of unwashed barbarians.
Two of the hog-tied beerbugs have woken, though still drowsy. Sofal is unconscious.
Do you want to move on now to explore the chasm? To look for Mettik and Chloe and Sofal's cousins? Is now the time to rescue prisoners, or this something that should be done by the light of day? Are you finished with the Barracks and the Lair?

ooc: dark outside, dark inside... I say we go. And before we go...
Revi spies the waking Bugbears and looks to Jules, "You lose a point everytime one of them wakes up," Smiling she continues, "So please be a dear and bop them each on the head with that fancy sword of yours to keep them under, 'kay?"
Julian Saturday September 19th, 2009 9:58:23 PM
"I'll bop you on the head, miss Fancy-Pants! Perhaps you should lose a point for every person covered in goo. Very inconsiderate, and, by the way, you smell awful."
Julian does 'bop' each of the prisoners on the head, awake or not. "That should do for another half day at least."
OOC including Power Attack I can dish out at least 16 points of non-lethal damage.
