Alexi leads through the narrow fissure, his shield readied should it be required. Beren follows, then Jet, Keela and finally Fatine and Ender. Beren recognizes the same pattern to the tapping as he heard before and can only assume that they are on the right track.

After some 30 or 40 yards the fissure opens into a dark chamber. The flickering light from their lanterns does not reach far into the chamber, but as soon as they enter the chamber the noise stops.

Fatine follows the men through the fissure and into the large, dark room. When the tapping stops, she mumbles, "Well dat not be a good sign." She nervously toys with one of the dolls attached to her belt.

"Children! Are you here?" He asks in a kind tone, but do they know the common tongue yet?

He pulls out his native favor bag, given to them many moons ago and holds it up to the light, so the children can see it as he taps his chest. "I am Jet."

He then makes a motion for the children to come to the group as he mentions another name, of someone waiting for them, "Honaw, outside."

Hearing Jet's question, Beren repeats it in Elvish. They have already announced their presence to any who might wish them harm. Further noise will not let an enemy know any more about them.

From outside of the range of the light a voice returns Beren's call. "Over here...we are over here!" The voice sounds like that of a young boy and he speaks in an older form of elvish.

Despite Alexi's best efforts he can only see as far as the light casts it's dim glow, and what he sees is more water. The beginningof a water body is barely visible to him at the edge of his vision, and it is from that direction the child's voice emanates from.

He points towards the sound of the voice, and starts to move in that direction. He draws his cloak up around his face hoping that the mottled shades will hide his form in the darkened cavern.

ooc: DM's I cast Detect Evil before we continued today, I take it, none has been detected? I'm sorry for not including it at the bottom of my post. Jet is doing a lot of things, just stop him if there is an attack.

Jet scans the room slowly, checking the water especially, for evil, before they move on. Jet begins to remove his armor in case the children are stranded on an island somewhere in the water. Someone will need to swim them back over.

"Just keep talking to them. Ask them if they are missing anyone that came here with them and ask if there is another enemy besides Crik?" He says in a serious tone. He then takes a deep breath and looks back to Beren, "Please."

Jet detects no immediate presence of evil nearby and prepares to wade into the water in the direction of the youth's voice. Ender cautions the group about a potential trap while Beren and the rest of the team wait at the shore. The water is icy cold and draws the breath from Jet. With each step he can feel his extremities begin to numb.

Jet quickly leaves the water and comes up with a plan. "Please give me your rope?" He asks the others and has them tie it all together. Taking a Sunrod, he strikes it on the floor, then toses it toward the voise of the children, to get a better idea of what they are dealing with. "Let us see what we need to do first."

IC: Alexi is about to warn Jet about water creatures, especially the king that grab an unsuspeting victim and drag them under, but Jet retreats from the the water, rather blue.

"Cold too?" he asks. "I kinda miss the unbearable heat of the grassy plains above," he mutters.

"Good idea Jet. We can't be going about blindly, either on land or in the air, without further idea of what's out here."

Alexi remains alert for anything that appears before them and seems to pose a threat.
'You girls keep an eye to our backs and I'll watch the waters," he says.

"Yes...there is a swing bridge to one side of the island. Somewhere to your left...I mean your right...my left" the young voice calls back to Beren. Jet throws the sunrod out towards the voices and in its dim light he can make out a small rocky islet with two or three small buildings. The lake then swallows up the sunrod and any light it was casting.

Beren and Fatine lead the way towards the unseen swing bridge while the others contemplate what else might be guarding the children. As they proceed a wooden platform comes into view. A stout wooden mast protrudes from the platform and the decking of a bridge hangs from that. The bridge is currently swung parrallel to shore. The bottom of the mast projects down through a spoked wheel, through the platform, and into the rock below. The spoked wheel has 4 stations whereby a person might apply his weight to a spoke and swing the bridge across the water. The span itself is about twenty feet.

On the far side the children can now be seen, locked in sheds with barred doors and windows. They are now crowded against the bars, as they jostle to see who has come to rescue them.

There is no apparent evidence of traps and so with much creaking and groaning, the bridge swings slowly into position , it's far end coming to a stop over a sill cut into the rocky island on the other side. Jet, Alexi & Beren can feel the burning in their legs and shoulders from the exertion required to get the bridge moving.

Anyone testing the bridge before crossing discovers it to be quite stable and in good repair.

He awaits there answer before venturing onto the bridge. If they wish, he will remain where he is to guard their exit.

OOC: I had two languages slots i left open at character creation. On my CHS I've updated it filling one slot with elven. I'm assuming he is learning words and phrases and with some tutoring later, be fluent.

Beren guards the bridge as Jet and the others venture onto the island to rescue the children. The locks on the cages look to be easy to break if one has the appropriate weapons.

"No one sees to our work", the children reply. "We have no work. The cold monster guards us sometimes, but usually there are two men who bring us food and take away the waste buckets. Sometimes a third man comes, but he always stays in the shadows and does not let us see him. "

The children crowd the bars and wait to be released. They are dirty and unkempt but otherwise appear to be unharmed.

Alexi fishes around his body for something to break the locks. The only thing he can find to remotely do the job is his flail or handaxe.

"Hmm... if we had someone to pick the locks that would be great. But that may take too long. A good malet or pick axe would be quicker."

Alexi decides to practice some of his elven and see how far he gets. By pantomining, he goes through the motions as if he's wielding a pickaxe and says in highly accented elven, "work with rocks, break rocks with..." and so forth, making 'cachink' sounds as metal on rock does.

Friends, I'll be posting a new DM post later on this evening. Please expect a DM post from me every evening, and we'll see how that schedule works out.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to get a current module or even any notes on how the former DMs expected to proceed. So I can surely use your help. Please e-mail me at cayzle@cayzle.com if you have any suggestions or ideas. And what would help even more -- please don't hesitate to improve and edit the game page on the Woldipedia.

Our current plan is to continue this game until the overall story is complete, which I will guide to a January denouement. After that, we might (1) continue this game with these characters and with new recruits, or (2) move these characters to other games, or (3) start new characters. We'll see.

DM Cayzle - Can It Be This Easy?

Ender keeps watch at the bridge. He detects no sign of trouble. Although he is surely expecting something.

Jet asks about the kids' captors -- what race are they, etc. He looks about for tracks. He finds it hard to see anything in the cold dark of this cavern, but he does see signs that two human- or half-elf-size feet have been walking around ... likely in soft leather boots of some kind.

The kids say that the two men who brought them food were people, you know, men, like everyone. Normal. But they always keep cloths tied over their faces. They never got a good look at the shadowy fellow.

Alexi fetches Beren's hammer and uses it to free the kids from the sheds in which they are held. (There is one shed that has no kids.)

Keela keeps Alexi company, and offers advice on getting the kids free.

The children pile out -- they could sure use baths, but only a real curmudgeon, or maybe a true dirt-a-phobe, could turn nose up to the kids who leap out, hugging and cheering their rescuers. Of course, they are doing so in their native tongue, but Alexi can translate. OTOH, no need to translate the grins on those dirty faces.

Now the job is to get these kids out of here!

[OOC: Now we see the iron hand of the new DM reaching down to smooth things over. Unless someone has a better plan, we will let the PCs of absent players shepherd the kids along, leaving the four active PCs free to act as scouts, guards, or whatever. Sound okay?]

OOC: sounds like a good plan - keep the absent player pcs present in minor rolls. Also, outside the cave, we have some Ahote guides, although it wasn't clear whether they stopped at the entrance of the canyons or the entrance to the cave. You can backtrack the DM posts and see what they intended.

The plot of the kidnapping is envolved in a dream sequence experienced by the party and an Ahote shamman, back before they reached Bryn Baraz. Check the details in the archives under Vol 1, Chpt 8: Dream Quest. Some big bad thing is responsible for the abduction of the children. The Ice Creature was just a quardian. IC:The staunch cavalryman is nearly overcome with tears of joy seeing the children so happy and hugging him and Keela and the others. What would Keela say if she saw some tears from the hardened fighter? What would Jet say?

Holding his composure with some difficulty, he attempts to hush them as best he can and points to the bridge and the other side and pushing the kids that way.

Once on the other side, confident that the two elves can communicate well enough with the children to tell them what to do and keep quiet, Alexi takes up Beren's lamp again and with sword drawn, starts the long journey back to the surface, ever the vigilant for the captors.

To her everlasting regret, Keela can only manage to hug five or six kids at once. She makes a studious effort to hug more, though.

She tries to carry a couple of the smaller ones, but really doesn't have the strength. She settles for carrying one little girl pig-a-back, and directing the others to pair up and hold hands, using a combination of gestures and the few Elvish words she has managed to pick up. There is treacherous footing ahead, and she wants to be sure everybody makes it through all right.

Jet tries to avoid the childrens hugs. Not because he wouldn't want to comfort them, but he would feel terrible, if one of them put an eye out on an armor spike, so he tells the others to help them as he keeps watch and acts without passion.

"We still have to deal with the darkmantels, things, whatever you called them. Alexi and I will charge back into the room and take their attacks. A couple of rounds later, the rest of you run through with the children, so that they are not attacked. Alexi can toss down another one of those thunder stones when you all have passed, to perhaps chase them off again.

Lets get out of here!"
