Towards the Ritual (DM JohnP) Tuesday September 1st, 2009 11:22:32 PM
The older manfri nods as the Bloodpack greet he and his companions. After listening to their words, he gestures and the younger manfri rise to their feet.
"Long way. Short time. We help you."
The younger manfri begin what everyone but Falmar recognizes as the preparations for their unique travel magic through the Sargrass. If they had to guess, something like druidic magic but not really that.
"Not stop. Stay with us. We rest later. Many coming to Birth. Birth long time coming, not sure it happen. You help make it so."
The four younger manfri move into the Grass and it is obvious that the Bloodpack are to follow them.
Yanosh Wednesday September 2nd, 2009 7:11:57 AM
"Talki fresal, dondit likki," Yanosh repeats as he welcomes the Manfri. Yanosh casts Endure Elements on himself and he is ready to go. Knowing that as long as he has his armour and weapons he is always ready.
Trellus Wednesday September 2nd, 2009 9:04:48 AM
Trellus shakes his head at Gilan. "You better stay with us," he decides. "We need to keep together so the manfri picks work on all of us." He grins at the druid and chuckles, "You'd be totally warped if the rest of us suddenly bipped away or something."
With that, the blond cleric plunges into the Grass.
Tishe' (AC 16 HP 77 /77) (Endure Elements, Mage Armor) Wednesday September 2nd, 2009 9:20:38 AM
A pleased smile on her face, Tishe' tucks her horned toad, Wart, into his satchel/nest and troops out with the Manfri, the Bloodpack, and the Child.

Olaf AC 26, HP 76/76 (20% miss chance) Wednesday September 2nd, 2009 5:55:52 PM
Olaf gets close to the Manfri, heading their words. "I'm thinkin'..." this one could end up anywhere. Best keep on alert. With that he takes out his shield and sickle, girds himself, then follows.
Flea Wednesday September 2nd, 2009 8:36:27 PM
Flea adjusts her pack on her back, and hands swinging she hustles after the manfri.
Gilan [endure elements, longstrider] Wednesday September 2nd, 2009 9:07:10 PM
Gilan smiled and tapped his nose with a finger. "I think that I might be able to find you if I needed too, but I don't want to chance it." He falls into step with the Manfri, not wanting to be left behind and he always enjoyed the way they traveled through the grass. It is a mystery still to him how they do it and sometimes he would really like to learn but is not sure if they would part with too much knowledge.

Grymash Wednesday September 2nd, 2009 10:06:32 PM
Grymash also joins in with the march of the Manfri. Child in hand. He wonders how the Child will react to this.
Moving at Manfri Speed (DM JohnP) Wednesday September 2nd, 2009 11:19:03 PM
As in the past, travel with the Manfri is quicker than the Bloodpack could manage on their own. As well, the little natives of the Sargrass seem to sense where creatures and other potential dangers exist around them. More than once, the Manfri veer from their course to detour around some unseen hazard. But the Bloodpack, particularly Tishe' and Gilan, can tell that the manfri are taking them on a course towards the centre of the Sargrass. The 'Pack has rarely ventured there in the past and doesn't know what to expect.
Finally towards evening, the manfri stop moving and begin preparing to camp overnight under the open sky. While the younger ones prepare sleeping mats and gather foodstuffs, the older one speaks to the Bloodpack.
"Birth has been long time coming. Elders there when Child formed. Others kept Child safe. What started then, keeps on now."
"Honor to help. Honor to be with you."
Grymash queried the Child while he was carrying it. The half-orc senses something best described as eagerness from the Child.
Falmar Thursday September 3rd, 2009 6:22:25 AM
Falmar looks at the older Manfri, and wonders how long the Manfri live.... Wonder how you find that out...asking would be almost like asking " when are you going to die " this is something I'm not going to ask them..... how old is the Child ? Decades?
Falmar readies his bow and sends Moxy up to have a look around their camp.
Trellus Thursday September 3rd, 2009 8:14:51 AM
Trellus sits at ease at the manfri camp. He notes Falmar keeping his bow handy, but he himself makes no defensive preparations. The blond human trusts the natives completely, but he understands the newcomer doesn't. Plus its good the man is cautious. Caution is a major survival tool here in the Grass.
Listening to the manfri, Trellus ducks his head as they speak of honor. "We are honored to be allowed to join you," he responds. Then he pauses for a moment as he collects the correct words for his question. "The Child formed under Rattledam," he notes cautiously. "Or was the dome built after, to help keep the Child safe? Did Galafar and the others know of the Child?"
Tishe' (AC 16 HP 77 /77) (Endure Elements, Mage Armor) d20+15=19 ; d20+15=23 ; Thursday September 3rd, 2009 10:06:33 AM
Tishe' happily goes about the process of making woven Grass mats to sleep on for herself and the rest of the Bloodpack, showing Falmar how to select and weave the right types of Grasses. "SageGrass is best because of the relative ease of weaving the fibers and because its scent keeps away insects. HardGrass also works to mask a person's heat signature from the insects, but it is more difficult to weave."
She almost loses her concentration as the Manfri speak of how long ago the Child was 'formed'. "We found the Child under Rattledam, and Rattledam has been in existance since the Powers changed the Sar Forest to the Sargrass back... well, back at least before the previous Great Migration." Her eyes widen. "Ebyron told us the change happened in the First Age before he was imprisoned in the Cradle of the Wold. That must have been thousands of years ago!"
Her respect for the Manfri, already significant, goes up by several notches.

Flea d20+7=21 ; Thursday September 3rd, 2009 6:30:03 PM
Completely at ease with the manfri, Flea jogs along until the campsite is determined.
" Elders there when Child formed. Others kept Child safe. What started then, keeps on now."
"Honor to help. Honor to be with you."
The rogue loves the way these guys talk. So much is communicated in such a straightforward and simple way. What's not to understand?
Flea addresses the elder manfri, her face and manner frank, "what do the elders tell about the formation of the child? Is it anything like the drake we helped to be borne...back so long ago, as part of the Sargrass circle of life...or is it like the boy we found in the Scar?" Flea quickly adds, "he was already a-born, but he could look like a man, " the rogue points to trellus, "or he could turn into a creature...a dragon!"
Later, if and when the manfri has addressed her concerns, Flea will recount some of the past adventures of the Bloodpack to Falmar, and anyone else interested in listening.
Gilan [wildshape: dire bear] [endure elements, longstrider] Thursday September 3rd, 2009 7:59:50 PM
Gilan finds the going as easy as it normally is when with the Manfri and once again he is surprised....though he figures that she should not be. As they stop to make camp, he goes about his normal duties as normal but does listen to the older Manfri as he talks. So it would seem that the child has been waiting a long time for the right time to be born. The questions posed by the others are some that rattle around in his own head and he wonders if they will get any answers.
Most of his time is spent in silent commune with the Sargrass herself, feeling the flow of the air over her and the slightly tremble of the earth beneath her. It is a calming and soothing thing for him and he so enjoys it that he has started to spend a little time alone each day to do just that. Today though, he has shifted into the form of a extremely large bear that is almost prehistoric in appearance.

No post tonight ... sorry folks.
Falmar d20+8=9 ; Friday September 4th, 2009 11:55:04 AM
Falmar realizes he is the only one that seems to be concerned with their safety and puts his bow down.
Listening to what Tishe' has to say about the better weaving grasses in the Sargass, Falmar collects some SageGrass and HardGrass and begins to weave his own sleeping mat, weaving the two grasses together while listening to Flea's Tale of their earlier adventures. (Weaving skill check).(Epic Fail)
Falmar chuckles a bit and glances in Grymash's direction as the story of the belt is relayed...
The Child sees to be another ring in the Circle of Life here, a much slower circle....If the Evil came after the Drake the way they did, what more will come for the Child?
Falmar abandons his weaving for the night and stares off into the stars slowly humming a tune.
Second Day on the Plains (DM JohnP) Saturday September 5th, 2009 12:10:00 AM
The night passes quietly. Quietly for the Sargrass, that is. The manfri must be doing something since nothing dangerous bothers the Bloodpack but there are many night insects and other small creatures moving through the grass and flying overhead. Once, sometime after the moon rises, a great flying creature passes silently overhead.
When morning arrives, the Bloodpack are surprised to see that the four children are sitting quietly near Grymash and the Child. When asked, one of the children states, "Child wanted us. Told us where to go." Whoever was on watch never noticed the children arriving and they don't elaborate on how they managed to cross the Sargrass so quickly by themselves.
The manfri don't seem to be surprised by the arrival of the children. In fact, they barely pause in their preparations for the day's travels. The older manfri tells the Bloodpack that they should arrive at the end of this day. The manfri's only response to Trellus' questions about Rattledam and the Child was a hand gesture and shrug, suggesting that the manfri neither knows for certain or cares about the sequence of events.
Gilan [wildshape: dire bear] [endure elements, longstrider] Saturday September 5th, 2009 1:20:35 AM
Gilan wakes in the morning early as usual and the large dire bear tromps off into the grass to go about his own business. His daily prayers are observed to Mother and Father, though sung in the voice of his animal form this day...just to see how it will work out. He digs up some breakfast out of the grass, eating a fair amount of assorted insects and grubs before returning to camp.
As he plods into camp he glances to the children that had shown up and just shakes his large head. It seems that they have some role to play in all this as well, though it is anyones' guess as to what...though maybe the Manfri know why. If anyone has need of him he figures they will come to find him, though the new guy might not understand where the human went and the animal came from....it has happened in the past.

Tishe' (AC 16 HP 77 /77) (Endure Elements, Mage Armor) Saturday September 5th, 2009 3:02:38 PM
Sleeping well, waking well, study, contemplate, and eat. Tishe' raises an eye at the children, but shrugs. "If the Child called them, they must have a more important role than an eventual priesthood. Perhaps we need to ensure they have a guard while we move."
She places another Endure Elements on Falmar, and then Endure Elements and Mage Armor on her own person.

Towards the Birthing Place (DM JohnP) Monday September 7th, 2009 10:47:34 PM
Once everyone is ready, the manfri begin the preparations for their travelling magic. Once more, the Bloodpack is moving through the Sargrass without hindrance and at what is probably greater than normal speed. The only difference is that today the four children are walking alongside Grymash and the Child. The manfri set a steady, ground-eating pace that continues uninterrupted except for a break near midday.
Finally, as the setting sun is casting long shadows across the Sargrass and the only sound is the quiet rustling of the grasses in the gentle evening breeze, the manfri begin to slow. The older manfri speaks quietly to the Bloodpack while the younger ones drop to their knees in the grass. When the Bloodpack look around, there is nothing in the surrounding grass to indicate that they have arrived anywhere.
"Close now. Must pray and prepare to enter cirle. You wait to go on. Or pray with us."
The older manfri then joins the younger ones, his lean wiry frame kneeling with a grace that is surprising in someone of his apparent age. The prayers are intoned too quietly for most of the Bloodpack to here and are spoken in the manfri language even if anyone manages to overhear. None of the Bloodpack recognize the motions and gestures used by the manfri during the ritual.
DM Apology - Sorry for missing a post this weekend. With the long weekend, I frankly forgot that I should have posted last night.
I will be out of town on Thursday evening and, possibly, Wednesday as well. I will attempt to make a DM post on Thursday night but that's not assured. It depends on how well the hotel internet works.

Olaf AC 26, HP 76/76 (20% miss chance) d20+13=32 ; Tuesday September 8th, 2009 6:45:25 PM
Olaf follows Tishe''s example, and moves about in a methodical circle in the grass, looking for potential enemies or features of terrain hidden to a first glance. He concentrates through the mark of Gargul upon his chest, sending a brief message to the others of the pack: Don't like the look of this. Any chance of gettin' an eye in the sky?

Grymash Tuesday September 8th, 2009 8:08:28 PM
Grymash wakes up surrounded by the children. First words are, "Did you ask your parents? Do they know you're here?" He seems rather perturbed, however, he realizes that the Child probably brought them here and they were never in any danger. Although, once the Child is delivered, he'll have to baby sit them until theyre returned.
Gilan [wildshape: Sargrass wasp] [endure elements, longstrider] Tuesday September 8th, 2009 9:04:44 PM
Gilan paces around the area until Olaf asks his question and he shifts back to his human form. Through the link that they now share with the Mark, he sends out a mesage of his own. "Are you kidding me?" His body shifts again and he takes to the air as a rather large Sargrass wasp. His aerial circuit around the area is more fun than he remembers and he finds that animal form is actually liberating.
He will report any findings to Trellus or Tishe' first, depending upon who he can find and who is closest. He has not tried to use the Mark in his shifted forms but it might be worth a try. "Trell...can you hear me?" He might have to rely upon this form of communication while scouting and it would be nice to make sure that it would work.

Flea d20-1=10 ; Tuesday September 8th, 2009 9:55:12 PM
Like Gry, Flea is a little concerned with the presence of the child-guardians of the egg. Not so much that they are called to bear witness to something so great as its hatching...but that they are mesmerised beyond normal reason.
Kids don't normally act like this... the rogue thinks to herself. She spends some time studying the young ones a little more closely...though previous study did not raise her hackles.
Sense Motive=10
Flea wishes she were a little better at reading the motives of people...
With a sigh, the rogue gives up the task, and listens to the familiar the incomprehensivle clicks and mutterings of the manfri folk. Sound like the plains insects, she thinks to herself, as she gets ready for what might come next. Pulling her holy sword dedicated to Domi, she places the flat of the blade over her tunic in proximity to the silvery scar given her by Gargul.
Domi, grant me courage for what is to come next, and grey Gargul, should my time come, welcome me into the Shadowlands with open arms and smiling eyes. This is the extent of the gnome's prayers.
Falmar AC: 24 (25 with Sword) HP 59/59 (Endure Elements, Aura of Courage), Tuesday September 8th, 2009 10:25:33 PM
Falmar decides to take this opportunity to join the Manfri in Prayer.
Any assistance from the gods will be needed for what is coming....
moving closer to the Manfri circle Falmar squats down and begins his own prayers to Domi for understanding and the ability to face this challenge and bring everyone through the other side.
Seeing Gilan take to the air, Falmar keeps moxy on his shoulder and sneaks him a scratch or two as the prayers begin.
The Birthing Place (DM JohnP) Tuesday September 8th, 2009 11:27:23 PM
Most of the Bloodpack leave the Manfri to their rituals and wait patiently. Of course, most put the time to good use by praying to their own Gods. Some, like Olaf and Gilan, try to learn more about where they are and where they are going. Olaf doesn't notice anything unusual about the immediate area and Tishe' isn't able to see anything beyond the nearest patches of tall grass. When Gilan shifts, the rest of the Bloodpack notice that the mark left by Gargul is still present when he takes the form of a Sargrass Wasp - there's the same, gray patch just above the two primary eyes and between the antennae in nearly the same place it appears in Gilan's hair. Why no one commented upon the similar white patch on top of his head when in the form of a bear is unknown.
The wasp flies high enough above the grass to allow his eyes to see to the horizon ... or something like it. Even though the buzzing flight is enjoyable for Gilan, the shifter still has to adjust to the sensation of seeing through not just two large compound eyes but at least three other simple eyes that provide vision in nearly a complete circle around and over the wasp. Still, after taking some time to get accustomed, Gilan is convinced that there is definitely something ahead. The wasp's eyes are well-suited to distance vision but Gilan thinks that there is something rising high above the Sargrass.
The group's questions about what Gilan reports to them through the Mark of Gargul go unanswered.
After what begins to seem like an interminable wait, the manfri are once more ready to travel. Now, however, they aren't working their travel magic like earlier in the day. Everyone, including the children, follow along behind the natives of the Sargrass on a lightly worn path through the grass. As Flea watches them closely, the gnome realizes what exactly strikes her as unusual about the children ... their maturity. Unlike most children who would alternately be racing about in excitement or dragging their feet in boredom, the children walk steadily in a easy, relaxed pace that seems nearly effortless. And they're quiet, too, with none of the chatter that Flea associates with children. The children's behaviour is odd, too unusual to be explained by their recent loss of the only home that they had known.
As they walk through the lengthening shadows of twilight in the Sargrass, the rest of the Bloodpack notice what Gilan had reported to them. Gradually, as they move closer, the Bloodpack can tell more and more about what waits ahead until, finally, a flash of recognition comes to some of them ... they are seeing what must be dead trees stretching high above the Sargrass, higher than any tree that any of them have seen.
Trellus Wednesday September 9th, 2009 8:32:31 AM
"Light," Trellus breathes, both in awe of the sight before him and with the realization of what is about to happen. "You don't think we're bringing back the forest...do you?"
Some small part of his brain reminds him he really should be filling Falmar in, but it can't compete with the view. The blond cleric stands, slack jawed, as he tries to wrap his previously known reality around the presence of the giant white tree trunks.
"Light," he mutters again.
Tishe' (AC 16 HP 77 /77) (Endure Elements, Mage Armor) Wednesday September 9th, 2009 1:01:39 PM
"We are helping a Child mature and defending it from bullies", Tishe' responds firmly. "Whether that brings the SarForest back or not, the natural order will continue." The mystic thinks back months ago to when Ebyron asked the Bloodpack to allow him to return the SarGrass to a forest. The Bloodpack refused the reawakened Power then. "That was an unnatural time", she says to no one in particular.

Living in the Vein and in the Sargrass, Olaf never saw a tree higher than a few span. These behemoths leave him flabbergasted. "Them's trees?" he exclaims. "I...I...," he says, then lets the thought drift off.
Hearing the side comments of Trellus and Tishe', the young blonde man puzzles some time, but comes to no conclusion. "Are you sayin' this grass used ta be trees?" he asks of the older pack members.
Gilan [wildshape: Sargrass wasp] [endure elements, longstrider] Wednesday September 9th, 2009 6:48:03 PM
Gilan buzzed excitedly as they came into the area with the dead trees stretching out in front of them. They are extremely tall, taller than anything he had seen back in his original home. Several years ago, thinking of Plateau City would have brought a sense of loss to him but he had moved beyond that with all that he has experience here. In fact, he would never go back even if he had the chance...though he did wonder if his parents company was still thriving.
Without paying too much attention to the others, he buzzed ahead to the closest tree to get a closer look at it. Excited beyond measure he is little more than a blur as he flies all around it. He is not sure if they are going to bring trees back to the Plains, but he would have to try and remember where this place is and hopefully he will be able to return here again.

Falmar AC: 24 (25 with Sword) HP 59/59 (Endure Elements, Aura of Courage), Wednesday September 9th, 2009 7:16:53 PM
Falmar stares in Awe at the Trees ahead. Amazing ! Entire cities could be built among them ! (if I have the scale right) What could possibly have killed this forest ? Why ?
Looking toward the Child Falmar wonders if maybe the Child is no Child at all but a Seed ? A seed that will take ages upon ages to sprout ? A seed that will close a circle of life here ?
Thinking to the mark of Gargul : "What has happened to these trees ? what caused this ? What is a Sarforest ?"
Flea d20+9=28 ; d20+9=11 ; d20+11=12 ; Wednesday September 9th, 2009 8:50:32 PM
Flea continues to study the children, trying to remember anything she might have remembered from her past studies of history (Knowledge History=28) about children who might have behaved with the reserve of acolytes rather than the exurberance of youth, and what it was that effected them.
It's almost like something is controlling them..., she thinks to herself as she looks about her.
Her companions are too enthralled with the sight of the large trees, and perhaps they have grown used to the children's odd behaviour.
Flea decides to hang back and keep an eye on the group.

Memories of the Past, Hopes of the Future (DM JohnP) Wednesday September 9th, 2009 11:04:18 PM
The Bloodpack wonder about the tall remnants of the great trees that once covered this land as part of the what is now known as the SarForest. The manfri keep walking, though, so the Bloodpack cannot share more than a brief portion of what they have learned about the history of the Sargrass. The magic of the Marks of Gargul allow them to keep track of one another as Gilan goes flying high overhead. And the Marks also allow the shifter to relay what he sees of the place ahead.
Gilan sees that the trees stand about a bare hollow in the soil, devoid of the grass that covers nearly all of the plains. There is more, too, but he cannot tell much about it until he buzzes lower, below the tops of the dead trees that he judges to rise nearly 200 feet above the plain. At that lower height, GIlan can see more bare vegetation ... shorter trees standing bare of leaf and small limbs, what might be barren shrubs and who knows what else.
Gilan relays this over the link provided by the Mark of Gargul to the rest of the Bloodpack. Soon enough, the others get to see this for themselves when they suddenly break out of the grass into the bare area. The soil underfoot is not covered by grass or other vegetation. While unsettling, it provides a clear view towards the centre of the area where other Manfri can be seen waiting. The manfri guiding them are silent until nearly at the centre, when the old one speaks.
"Started here, the change. Never went back, never claimed by Grass. Best place for birth of Child."
The manfri gestures to indicate that the 'Pack can camp here, or back towards the edge of the grass.
Tishe' (AC 16 HP 77 /77) (Endure Elements, Mage Armor) d20+12=24 ; d20+12=25 ; Thursday September 10th, 2009 8:14:29 AM
Tishe' loves the new found abilities of the Mark of Gargul, but is uneasy in the grove of giant dead trees. "I'd prefer to camp in the Grass if that's all right by everyone else."
After helping set camp and weaving more mats, Tishe' settles in near Gilan. "You have a white streak in your hair", she tells him without preamble, "and it remains in whatever shape you become."

Trellus Thursday September 10th, 2009 10:50:33 AM
Trellus nods at Olaf as he allows himself to be pulled toward the trees. "They say that the Sargrass used to all be a forest, and then something happened long ago that killed the trees and brought the Grass. We think some kinda change brought the Woldsblood closer to the surface. There's some druid groups that have tried to reintroduce trees, and treants..." The cleric's face falls, as he remembers the encounter. "but they couldn't find a way to keep them alive."
He looks up. "Maybe soon, they will."
The cleric decides to camp inside the ring, but at the edge of the trees. This should put him close enough to his packmates in the grass to come to their aid if needed.
At some point he takes note of Flea's preoccupation with the children. "I think you're looking at the first priests of a new god," he tells her solemnly.
Yanoshendure elements Thursday September 10th, 2009 11:47:43 AM
The silent Cleric breaks into a uncharacteristic smile. "By the gods they remind me of my home." Yanosh remembers trees from his mountain home, though none as big as these, but still real trees. Yanosh remains with the Pack as the ready again for the night. He kicks the dirt and feels it with his hands. Letting it run through his fingers. "So much like home. Yet still so different." At night he carries his watch and sleeps readying for the nexr day.
Grymash Thursday September 10th, 2009 7:47:08 PM
Grymash follows along with the Child. The oddness of the situation is not lost on the half-orc. Of course, this mind has been a lot clearer and lucid since possessing the Child. His beasts have been kept at bay. The nightmares of him becoming a monster have not returned since the Child. He can understand the childrens devotion to the Child. Since becoming the bearer of the Child, he has been able to ponder the questions of life and death, deeper concepts never before imagined. And a fear hits Grymash like a cold breeze across his back that he will lose this once the Child has left him.
He looks at the children ... their behavior ... mature beyond their years. Before the Child entered his life, he may have never noticed such a thing. It's amazing, the power the Child has over them. How they seem so willing to follow someone, unborn ... not yet seen the world. Another cold realization crosses his mind. No wonder, why Gaal and his minions seek the Child. With this Child's abilities, manipulated and controlled by Gaal, there is no telling the control that foul god could have over all life in the Wold.
Gilan [wildshape: ] [endure elements, longstrider] Thursday September 10th, 2009 8:18:55 PM
Sitting at the edge of where the grass ends and the forest starts, he is eating from a bag of hoppers that he has. Glancing to Tishe' he nods as she sits down and offers her some from the bag. He reaches up at her comment and runs his free hand through his hair. "Flea showed me the white streak as well." Frowning he cannot help but chuckle and shake his head. "In every form that I take?" He had not been able to really check it out and the only way that he could think to do that was in water....not something he would try on the Plains.
Watching the others go about their own business he sighs and takes another hopper. Crunching happily he watches the trees and shakes his head. "I have to wonder what happened here. You know that I grewup in Plateau City and it is amazing to see trees again." To be honest he has never really talked about his life before he was rescued on the Plains. But these trees bring back a number of memories to him, one of the biggest being the zoo that he use to spend hours at watching the animals...it was the biggest reason that he became a druid.

Falmar AC: 24 (25 with Sword) HP 59/59 (Endure Elements, Aura of Courage), d20=7 ; Thursday September 10th, 2009 10:40:48 PM
Falmar spends some time wandering around watching the camp form. He realizes that actions of the children should concern him, but with the events of the last few days, it hardy measures up in terms of all the strangeness added to his life. Growing up in a city, he is surprised at how much the death of this forest is turning his mood foul. Pulling out his shears he collects some of the easier weaving grasses..
Walking to one of the trees he reaches out and places his hand against one of the trunks. Then sits with his back to the trunk and begins weaving a basket with tree patterns woven into it (7+8 = 15). He gives the completed basket to one of the children, not waiting for a reply, retrieves a woven Mat from Tishe with a tired " thank you" and goes to sleep next to his tree.

Olaf AC 26, HP 76/76 (20% miss chance) Friday September 11th, 2009 5:27:32 PM
Unnerved by the too-calm children, Olaf cannot seem to relax his guard. He prowls about the perimeter of their stopping place, getting familiar with what hiding places it might contain. As he walks about, he runs into Trellus once more, and thanks him for the information, saying, "I'm wonderin' what the local Power's gonna be thinkin' about all this. Seems to me Celsiun n' Mab n' them might be in on some poachin', if we're not careful."
On deeper reflection, he mentions a different thought, "Could be the child's a Power waitin' ta be born...ta replace a Power that went missin'. It'd explain the lack o' growin' things here." He shudders at the concept of that much power, hidden in such a small package next to Gry.
Preparations (DM JohnP) Friday September 11th, 2009 10:45:21 PM
Dawn comes to this portion of the Sargrass slowly, the light gradually showing more and more of the surrounding area and the remnants of the ancient Sar Forest here at the site of the ritual. Unusally, there is a slight haze of mist hanging over the Sargrass as the last of the night birds and insects return to their burrows, nests or whereever they shelter during the heat of the day. The mist thins as the sun rises higher in the sky until it no longer obscures the view to the distant horizon.
The manfri begin to stir as the light grows, going about their morning preparations. The Bloodpack rise, too, ready for whatever the day brings. They had discusses many things during the evening before - the changes wrought upon Gilan's return from the Lands of Rest and the strange children who have followed Grymash and the Child across the Sargrass. Theories were proposed but only time will tell if these ideas are correct.
Finally, after the 'Pack breaks their fast, the older manfri approaches them. A slight motion of his head and one hands seems to all the greeting that the 'Pack will receive this morning.
"Come. Child place ready."
The manfri turns and walks away towards the centre of the ancient circle of forest remnants, clearly expecting Grymash to follow with the Child. The manfri walks slow enough that no one has problems keeping pace. The destination seems to be a area clear of dead vegetation that is slightly lower than the surrounding ground. If anyone follows, they can see bare rock that has been smoothed either by the passage of wind and time or by slow patient hands. At the centre is a hollow just larger than the Child, clearly made or intended to hold the Child. There is no adornment, marking, or other sign that would give any indication of the purpose and history of this place.
The manfri gestures towards the hollow.
"Place Child. Ritual begins then."
Tishe' (AC 16 HP 77 /77) (Endure Elements, Mage Armor) Saturday September 12th, 2009 3:08:10 PM

Flea Saturday September 12th, 2009 9:12:11 PM
Flea makes an attempt to tidy herself up for the coming event. She goes so far as to remove her faded velvet gnome's cap, and rakes her fingers through her hair in an attempt to order it.
The rogue checks her wands, stuck through the crimosn sash tied 'round her waist, and ensures sword, danngers, and other important items are about her person. She finds the best vantage point, for her stature is not much taller than the manfri, near the depression intended for the child. It must be a place that permits her a view of what is beyond the depression as well...in case there are any unexpected visitors.
Gilan [wildshape: ] [endure elements, longstrider] Saturday September 12th, 2009 9:44:24 PM
Gilan finds his morning prayers are a lot brighter than they have been in the past. As he glances around to the others and grabs a quick bite, he listens to the Manfri as they tell him what is going to happen....though that is little.
Moving along with the rest of the group, he takes a space a little ways away from the area that the child will be born. What he is actually looking for is a place that gives him a good lookout point for not only the ritual as well as the surrounding area. This also should put him close enough in case his help is needed with something.

Trellus Monday September 14th, 2009 9:57:55 AM
First thing that morning, Trellus makes his daily devotions to Domi, and follows that with his habitual casting of Endure Elements on himself, Magic Vestment on his armor, and Magic Vestment on his shield.
After that, he dutifully follows Gry and the manfri to the ritual spot.
Noting the guarded attitude of Flea and Gilan, the cleric leans over and whispers to Falmar. "Manfri rituals seem to end with us fighting something," he warns his newest packmate. "Don't look like it this time, but keep shuttlecocked just in case."
Falmar AC: 24 (25 with Sword) HP 59/59 (Endure Elements, Aura of Courage), Monday September 14th, 2009 10:35:20 AM
After his morning spent in prayer and study Falmar watches as half of the 'Pack look ready to kill something.
Hearing Trellus's advice, Falmar send moxy aloft. The Raven perches on a dead branch and cocks his head listening.
Falmar stands on the edge of the ritual area with his back to a tree, Bow in hand awaiting what Gargul has tasked them to do.
It Begins (DM JohnP) Monday September 14th, 2009 11:07:21 PM
The Bloodpack follow the manfri to the ritual point. Since some of the 'Pack are cautious, Gilan seeks out a good vantage point and Falmar sends his familiar aloft to keep watch. Everyone else is prepared to watch the ritual even, presumably, the unusually silent Grymash.
The older manfri may be the leader of the ritual since the younger manfri seem to be deferring to this one. Presuming that Grymash follows with the Child, the older manfri assists with settling the Child into the hollow prepared for it. The four children crowd close, nearly close enough to touch the Child but not so much to be in the way of whatever the manfri will be doing.
"Start soon. Slow. Long. Will you watch?"
"Will you protect?"
Trellus Tuesday September 15th, 2009 8:45:39 AM
Trellus hides a grin at "Will you protect?", glances over at Gilan, and gives the man a wink. Here we go again, he sends to his friend.
The moment of levity passes, and the blond man becomes more serious. "Yes", he answers, covering both questions.

Tishe' nods to the Manfri and repeats the ancient oath; "Talki fresal, dondit likki. The land, my life", and then begins her preparations.
First, she pulls from her magical pants a tan bag and in turn pulls a furball that rapidly becomes a Brown Bear. "Stay with me, brother. Guard."
Then, assuming she has half a minute to prepare (ie 5 rounds), she continues her spellcasting on herself and Falmar. Freedom of Movement, See Invisible, Speak with Animals (from wand) and Shield are cast on the mystic. Falmar recieves a Cat's Grace spell.

First Stage (DM JohnP) Tuesday September 15th, 2009 11:34:58 PM
The older manfri waits for any of the Bloodpack to object to their protecting the ritual. When no one does so, the manfri shrugs.
"Watch. Listen. Keep back."
Four other manfri come up to join the older one around the Child where it rests in the centre of what the Bloodpack has been told was the site of the ritual that created the Sargrass. The manfri keep back slightly, seemingly there to assist the older one. The four children sit together near the Child and away from the Bloodpack.
The older manfri moves close to the Child and sinks to the bare ground, his withered legs bent beneath him in a kneeling posture. Then, well, nothing seems to happen at first. Whatever the manfri is doing is silent. After several minutes, the manfri begins gesturing and the 'Pack figure that he is working some kind of magic. If they watch long enough, the Bloodpack might recognize what the manfri is doing.

Too late. The blond man stops speaking as Woldsblood wells up from the hollow. Though he is not quite prepared for its appearance, the cleric quickly rallies himself to resist the pull of the powerful substance. [Will 27]

Knowledge religion 16,
Falmar keeps one eye on the ritual and realizes that the Manfri are trying to call upon the Blood of the Wold. He immediately increases the Tempo of his Tune.
Falmar removes his shield from his pack and slings it over his shoulder, keeping his Bow ready... "Stop watching them watch for others...How distracting...Where did they learn ?.....keep watching Will Save = 27. "The blood is covering the child...a rebirth ? A new God ?.....Bah..stop watching !....
Aparently winning his struggle to keep vigilant Falmar quickly looks at the other Pack members and goes back to watching outside the circle. Spot Check = 6. :(

Gilan allows his eyes to wander to the ceremony that is going on and feels his skin crawl. Once again he can feel the Woldsblood that had entwined his spiritual form when he had waited too long. Though it had not been painful in anyway, it was one of those odd sensations that he was going to have a hard time getting rid of in his mind.
The pounding sound of Woldsblood in his ears makes listening hard but his eyes are still working better than they normall would. He tears his attention away from the ritual to watch the surroundings.

The Rite Continues (DM JohnP) Wednesday September 16th, 2009 11:55:04 PM
After having raised what would have seemed like a huge amount of Woldsblood, at least before they saw the pool beneath Rattledam, the older manfri pauses. A layer of Woldsblood still covers the Child, glistening and reflecting the morning light. Anyone who remains close to the Child and the ritual still feels the pull of the Woldsblood on their soul, distracting them and reminding them of what waits at the end of their mortal lives.
Everyone within 50 ft of Child - DC 25 Will check or dazed for 1d4 rounds
The Bloodpack realize that a sizable group of manfri must be nearby for the soon see four small groups stepping from the grass aroudn the edge of the clear area. Even though the groups are not synchronized they are obviously moving to a common purpose. Looking back and forth, it is soon apparent that the groups have moved to points marking what are now the cardinal directions - east, south, north and west. The 'Pack soon hear a voice coming from each of the groups and, when they look, can see one manfri in each group making the gestures for spellcasting. A moment of study tells Gilan and Tishe' that the manfri are each casting a druidic summoning spell, but more powerful than what either of them can cast. The spells build, racing towards completion and the voices of the manfri druids begin to harmonize.
To the east, the 'Pack see a huge whirling cloud descend from the sky towards the group of manfri.
In the west, a mound of earth shoves itself from the soil right at the edge of the Grass and this barren spot until a huge, roughly man-shaped form stands facing the Child.
In the north, a small glowing spark forms near the hands of the manfri spellcaster and drops to the ground. The growing wind fans the flames and it quickly grows to the size of a bonfire.
And, to the south, the 'Pack see something rare. And dangerous. Gradually rising from the ground is a shifting, animate mass of water that eventually towers over the slight manfri. So much water in the open ...
Then, at some unheard direction, each of the elementals begins moving slowly towards the Child in the centre of the clearing. Looking back and forth between them, it seems that any one of the elementals will be the first to arrive. Finally, though, the whirling mass of air descends towards the Child, closer and closer to the Woldsblood covering the Child.
Lower .... lower ... almost to the surface .... and .... it's gone.
The 'Pack barely have time to contemplate this before the column of fire reaches the Child and extends a fiery limb towards the burden that Grymash has carried from the chamber beneath Rattledam to this place.
And, the same thing happens.
The earth elemental has reached the Child by this point and the 'Pack finally get a chance to better observe what it happening. The elemental reaches out with its misshapen upper limb and touches the top of the Child. The substance of the elemental seems to pour into the Child, draining the elemental until nothing is left.
Finally, the water elemental reaches the Child. Already a cloud of biting insects has gathered around the animate water. Like the earth elemental, the water reaches out and flows over the surface of the Child. The swarm of insects continues to hover overhead as the last of the water flows away.
Anyone within 50 ft who is not dazed - Highlight to display spoiler: {The Child is visibly larger. Not much, but enough to easily notice. And, if someone looks closely, the colour of the Child has changed from the opalescent gray it was originally to more muted, natural tones.}

[Will Save 35]
Trellus maintains his position, again fighting off the pulling effect of the Woldsblood. The cleric watches, almost entranced, as all the manfri appear and take their part.
And then the water elemental shows up. The blond man tenses, and takes an involuntary step away from the creature.
If Falmar is watching, up until this point, the leader of the Bloodpack has been more concerned with his fellows that what was actually taking place. Oh, he was interested enough, and clearly watching, its just his attentions were divided. The water elemental changes the man's attitude instantly, and it is quite obvious Trellus is more concerned about it than any other person, creature or activity in this place.
Only when the elemental flows into the Child does the Rattledam native relax, and even then he keeps a wary eye on the cloud of insects.

The arrival of more manfri is interesting and the fact that they take up the positions of the four directions is further so. The arrival of each elemental is not as surprising as it should have been with the positioning of the manfri, or at least to him. Even being further back from the rest, he is not too happy with the arrival of a water elemental and the bugs that follow it. Still he holds his ground and then glances to check on the others.
His heart lurches when he notes Tishe' go down and is happy that Falmar is there to pull her back from the woldsblood. The fact that each elemental merges with the child raises his eyebrows and he wonders what type of child is being born.

The Rite Continues - Part II (DM JohnP) Thursday September 17th, 2009 11:16:06 PM
The manfri continue with the ritual, doing whatever they are doing with the Child. The outcome is still uncertain but the Bloodpack have committed to guarding the rite until it is completed.
The four groups of manfri silently go back into the grass, slipping between the strands without sound or disturbance. No one is quite certain whether the manfri immediately return or if more were waiting there. Manfri begin moving from the grass towards the centre of the clearing where the Child rests, glowing and sparkling from whatever the absorption of the elementals has caused. Looking closely, each of the manfri is carrying something. When one passes close by, the Bloodpack realize that the manfri is carrying a blade of grass ... steel grass if Tishe' or Gilan had to guess. Realizing that, the Bloodpack watch more closely and notice that each of the more than fifty manfri are also carrying some kind of grass. Some grasses are familiar but others are unknown to the Bloodpack.
The manfri seem to affected by the Woldsblood just like the Bloodpack. Most seem to be able to withstand the tug of the Woldsblood on their souls but some stop, dazed, until they recover and continue to advance towards the Child. None of the other manfri stop to help instead acting as if this were natural and expected.
When they reach the Child, each manfri passes the grass to the older one who began the ritual and summoned the Woldsblood. Carefully, each blade of grass is gently placed on the gleaming Woldsblood covering the Child until the child is slowly covered by a mottled green and brown blanket of grass. If the Bloodpack were to guess, every kind of grass found in the Sargrass.

Getting Set (DM JohnP) Wednesday September 23rd, 2009 10:10:07 PM
The Bloodpack have made preparations for what they suspect is the fight to come. Most people have cast protective magics and set themselves for the coming combat.
All of them have moved far enough away from the Child that they are not affected by the Woldsblood that has been summoned for the ritual. The Bloodpack now stand in the barren clearing the grass where the only remnants of the former SarForest are the tattered nearly petrified shrubs and towering dead trees.
There are manfri somewhere out in the grass who might aid in the defense of the ritual. The motivations and purpose of the small inhabitants of the Sargrass are always a mystery, though.
The question for the Bloodpack is whether they should prepare to let any opponents come to them here in this clear area, or attempt to meet them somewhere else.

Tishe' completes her summoning spell, bringing three Celestial Hippogryphs to the Wold. She calls to them in Celestial to send them on thier way. "Go and fly to the east and circle our enemy. Do not attack until I say."
Tishe' then repeats her orders in Common so the Bloodpack knows what she said. That done, Tishe' Readies herself to move where Trellus orders.
The three hippogryphs take off, hustling through the air to get to the spot the four landed. There, they circle, providing an easy way to identify the enemy's location.

Gilan steps forward and smiles. "How about we make things a little harder for them even if they are invisible." In druidic he starts to prayer for a new spell and designs an area of the grasses to overgrow and entangle themself in a two hundred foot quarter circle, but leaves two areas that are not that way. The enemy will either have to chop their way through or take the paths that he put there...unless they are flying.
"They will have to come through there or there if they don't want to force or cut their way through....or go around." It might have not been the greatest of solutions, but it would cut off retreat also with anything less than fly or teleportation. There was a score to settle and he was looking forward to it. "I have one spell left to harden a person's skin to damage, anyone interested?"
The overgrowth area has the bowl part facing the Bloodpack and the bubble part out to cover as much area as possible.

Moving Into the Grass (DM JohnP) Thursday September 24th, 2009 11:31:35 PM
Tishe' summons some creatures to locate the opponents out in the grass while Falmar and Olaf move out towards the edge of the grass. Neither of the pair see any sign of the manfri as they move forward.
While this is happening, GIlan casts two spells to channel the movement of any opponents on the ground. Hopefully he hasn't caught any manfri but the small inhabitants of the Sargrass probably have their own methods of dealing with such things.
The other members of the Bloodpack have not acted yet. Trellus, Yanosh and Grymash are waiting with Flea.

Trellus notes that only Falmar seems to be heading directly out into the grass. "Hold on, dude" he calls out. "You'll have Wardd's own luck if you can find them hiding out there on foot. Plus we sure don't want them showing up here, while we're all out there. We gotta protect the Child." He glances at Gilan. "Think you and Tishe can pull a fast check in the air? Olaf AC 29, HP 76/76 (20% miss chance, prot from evil (6 min), barkskin (3 min)) Sunday September 27th, 2009 7:39:31 PM
Remembering that he might need additional defenses, Olaf searches through his pack and pulls out a potion of Barkskin. Nod softly to himself, he quaffs it, then continues to look for a better hiding place.
Setting Up (DM JohnP) Sunday September 27th, 2009 10:54:52 PM
Falmar is still out near the edge of the grass.
Grymash is back near Tishe' and Trellus.
Yanosh casts a spell and moves to cover the others who are heading out towards the grass.
Tishe casts a spell and begins to hover above the ground.
Gilan scans the sky for flying opponents and offers to cast other spells on his companions.
Trellus suggests that Tishe' and Gilan go scouting for trouble.
Olaf uses a potion to improve his defenses and looks for a better hiding spot. He's presently crouching down in the long grass roughly 20 feet in, but 50 of 60 feet short of the area that Gilan has affected with his spell.
Tishe' is maintaining a mental link with her summoned hippogriffs. They have been circling above a point in the grass maybe two hundred yards out but Tishe' suddenly senses them moving towards her, as if they were pursuing something.
DM Note - Approximate positions based on player posts. Please correct positions if you like in the next post.
No one has offered to sub for Flea. Unless someone wishes to do so, Flea will be back near the Child as the last line of defence and out of the combat.

Grymash steps forward and casts a spell. A divination that he hasn't used in a while. However, he plans to use it in a creative way. He doesnt know how he thought of it. Something seemed to inspire him. Maybe the child, maybe Gargul himself. Being so close to Woldsblood, the air of mortality fresh on the breeze, maybe, just maybe it might work. Olaf thinks into his mark of Gargul, Going forward to the edge o' Gilan's growth. Figurin' they'll come from the northern one. With that, he moves forward, concealing himself at the edge of the new growth.
Some Things Are Coming (DM JohnP) Monday September 28th, 2009 10:53:08 PM Yanosh hunkers down to wait for an opponent to show themselves.
Tishe' flies upward to get a better look at what her hippogriffs have spotted and are pursuing. Now that she is up in the air, Tishe' spies three figures flying above the tops of the grass at somewhat less than full speed for the spell. She estimates that the figures are 150 feet, or so, in front of Olaf. Her three hippogriffs are trying to attack the figures.
In fact, as the theurge watches she can see creatures moving through the Grass away towards a small clearing. As she watches, there is a flash of magical light that she might recognize (Spellcraft DC 20).
Trellus consumes another potion and waits for the arrival of their opponents.
Grymash moves forward slightly and casts a spell. He senses something ahead.

"They are about 150 feet in front of Olaf. Looks like they are slower than a normal fly spell, perhaps waiting on some summoned allies to arrive at the same time?"
Tishe' makes a consideration and decides that this wizard shouldn't be allowed to perform undistracted. The mystic weaves a spell and casts it to include the clearing where she saw the flash of light. An Ice Storm beats down on the Grass clearing (long range, 760 feet away!)

Tishe' recognizes the magic she saw in the distance as a Cone of Cold. The hippogriffs continue to harry the flying opponents but do not manage to hit.
Trellus downs a potion to become invisible and remains where he was.
Grymash races off into the grass in front. His divine gift allows him to move nearly effortlessly through the area touched by Gilan's spell.
All three of the flying humanoids charge Grymash, dropping low enough in the air to hit the half-orc. The first lands a solid strike with its trident, piercing Grymash's armor and some of his magical protection. The second slashes Grymash with its longsword and also inflict damage. The third misses with it's longsword, however. Opponent 1 -- hits AC 35, 17 damage Opponent 2 -- hits AC 38, 17 damage Opponent 3 -- misses AC 18
Grymash, Tishe' and Falmar immediately realize that these opponents are some kind of undead. Grymash's detection spell is fairly buzzing since at least one of these opponents has great gaping wounds from a double axe. The third one looks a little buggy, too.
