Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7 Monday November 2nd, 2009 3:56:19 PM
Xeron positions himself in a way that someone coming out the door and stopping to check the situation would be offering his back for the rogue to stab.
The BoB -- DM JIM d20=14 ; Monday November 2nd, 2009 7:31:16 PM
The group moves down the alleyway. It's muck and mud are joined by refuse and rats--big ginormous rats, one would feed a man and make a full dinner, something Xeron could attest too. Sanji carefully tries to unlock the door, but finds she cannot. Plan B.
With a mighty crash, Bosk breaks the door in, almost ripping it off it's hinges. He is the first one in and Sanji is right behind him. What the two of them and those behind see, is a medium sized room of about 40x40--most likely a back office. Against the far wall, directly in line with the door is a table with two men sitting at it, and to either side of them, an armed man. One of the men is Penn, who had slowly been smoking a clay pipe. Immediately he pulls it from his lips, turns it about and points the long slender stem at Gordo, the other man sitting at the table, and says, "HAH! I told you they would come for me. You sir owe me 100gp."
"The bet," responds Gordo, "was if they rescued you. They have yet to do that." Without taking his eyes off of Penn, Gordo says with a flip of his wrist, "Jake, Erimis, deal with these intruders, please." The pair of bouncers, whom Sanji recognizes as the pair she had seen before, comply by drawing their swords and advancing forward. 1 round action by Tuesday Morning.
The pair look to be wearing chain shirts and wielding short swords. They have clubs too, but have not opted to use them probably due to the enormous Taur blocking the doorway.
Bosk is 5ft in, 5ft out of the doorway. He needs to move in order for anyone else to move in and yes, he has room to charge either guard.

The elf draws his bow and knocks an arrow. He looks to Grendel and whispers, We need to be alert..

Hacking Erimis as soundly as he was sliced, Maikill calls for the man's surrender, but he'll have none of it.
Moving quickly, Grendel takes a verbal jab at Xeron as she passes by--the rogue looks none too pleased by her statement of cowardice. As she flanks Erimis, he takes a swing at her and misses by a mile, but so too does Grendel as she counterattacks.
Angered by Grendel's verbal attack, Xeron rushes in to outflank Jake, careful to stay out of his sword range.
Valla likewise takes an affront to Grendel's call of cowardice, but gets back on task and steps through the doorway with his bow. Calling for Gordo to call off his men, and reassuring Penn that he'll be rescued post haste, Valla fires an arrow at Gordo, hitting the wall next to his head. Immediately Penn jumps up and moves in front of Gordo with his arms outstretched, "No, he is off-limits." Penn blocks any further attacks against Gordo.
About to follow Valla's lead, Bosk hesitates about what to do. Bosk, you may take a different action for this turn, unless you really want to charge Penn
Sanji quickly moves around Jake the Snake and strikes for his back, but comes to find her luck with swords, or perhaps just this rapier, is terrible at best. ----

Seeing The Horned Cleric fall, cut down after lowering his weapon and making it clear he was no longer a threat, Padre realizes that this is a more dangerous situation than the group first realized. What Bosk said may have had some truth to it, but it was clear now that the only way out of this room would be to fight their way out. Calling for Gargul's protection, Padre circles around to the right of the bouncer (to p12) and takes a defensive position as he swings his axe at the target. Whether shaken by the taur's fall or trying too hard to protect himself, his impressive swing appears to miss his target completely.

Calling again for Erimis' surrender, Maikill's timing is just off as he misses the mark badly.
Even though she has him flanked, Grendel fails to defeat Erimis' armor as her axe's blade is deflected off her opponents chain shirt.
Padre finally takes action and leaps to Bosk's defense, striking warily at Jake the Snake, but misses him completely.
As ever, and wondering if she's truly cursed, Sanji cannot seem to connect with her rapier and her intended target. Perhaps it's time to buy a new blade or a different type of weapon altogether--if she survives this encounter.
With a quick leap, Xeron flanks Jake and drives his blade into his back, but it's not near enough to stop the warrior.
Valla, nonplussed about the whole Gordo situation, rushes Jake also, drawing his sword and striking out at the man instead of using his bow--which could hit one of his companions already engaged in melee. Adopting a flanking position as Xeron has, Valla's longsword strikes true, causing a severe wound to the man, but he still has a little more fight left in him. ---
Jake swings around and takes a 5ft step to Valla's left and strikes out at the elf, missing him cleanly.
Erimis also takes a 5ft step and strikes out with his glowing shortsword at Maikill, slicing open the half-orc's side, sending him tumbling down into darkness.

The weaknesses of his fighting methods are becoming much too clear to Maikill. Three times in one day he has been struck down. His leather armor nothing to the sharp blades of the enemy. When he swings his great axe with two hands he can cleave a man in two, but when he misses....
The axe badly misses Erimis and the momentum of the swing carries Maikill's arms to the side with the axe held in them. That is when he strikes, I have no defense when I miss. He was waiting for me to make such an error. Next time I will ....
The thoughts escape Maikill as he lies bleeding upon the ground, probably never to rise again.

Inwardly Padre curses himself for moving too slowly and for his ineffective use of a blade. As nods to Grendel and steps over Maikill, the blood pooling on the ground reminds him of his own mortality and that he to many soon be miiting the Judger of Souls If I could only land a hit, my friends wouldn't be staring into the Eye of Gargul. If I can just stay alive long enough, then I can help the others.[i]
As he his thinking this, he observes Xeron lash out at Jake, in what he hopes is an attack that will drop him. Even Xeron, who appeared hesitant to enter battle if holding his own. [i]Why can I not land a hit.

Padre feels the slice of the blade cut into him, and falls in a heap on the floor next to Maikill. I just hope that I held him off long enough for the others to survive. May Gargul's blessing be upon all of you.

Working her way around Erimis, Sanji places herself in a flanking position opposite Grendel. She watches Padre fall and despair rears it's ugly head again. I will not fail them. I will NOT fail them. Grendel holds out her morningstar towards Erimis, "Look, I need to tend to the dieing. Leave me to it and I'll save your partner too." Her demeanor is still threatening and she plans to assault Erimis if he does not immediately comply.
================= (Figured 1 d20 roll was sufficient for both actions.) Should Erimis not immediately take her up on the offer to save his own companion then she will engage him quickly. Move Action to circle around to P14 without drawing AoO, Standard action to attack. (Perhaps someone will be flanking him on the other side at this point.) Attack: Hit AC13 (15 if someone flanks) Damage: 3 hp.
If Erimis seems to agree she'll take a 5' step to N12, drop her morningstar, use a move action to draw her healers kit and a standard action to stabilize Maikill. (Heal check DC 15, Grendel's got a +10 mod.) Heal check to stabilize Maikill: 21 (success!)

Making the offer to stabilize Erimis' partner, Grendel receives a nod in confirmation and quickly sets about the task of stopping Maikill's bleeding--which she succeeds in doing easily (Heal check 24).
The rest continue to bleed as the battle continues on.
Valla strikes again at Erimis and misses, but not as badly as Sanji, who's lack of luck in hitting any foe is becoming lengendary.
Xeron moves quickly yo outflank Erimis, but can see the warrior keeping a wary eye on him as moves to circle around him.

Erimis, outnumbered three to one, strikes out at Valla but misses by a mile. Fearing he'll get outflanked, he moves 5ft back toward the wall.

We have lost Padre's player to real life concerns...
I'm starting to get disheartened. Every player that has left has been because of real life reasons and I can understand that, but after this latest loss, I'm starting to wonder if the game is any good. All that have left have said it's a good game, but it makes me wonder... anyways, I'm still here, I hope you guys are too. It's just hard to build modules and so forth and invest time in your character's and make it feel that it's more about your character's than just another module that is episodic in nature when one after the other leaves again and again. Sigh.

Not relishing the situation at hand, but determined to see it through, Valla delivers a swift cut from his longsword to Erimis.
Rushing to Bosk's side, Grendel administers to the Taur's wounds and staunches the massive bloodflow before her patient bleeds to death.
Xeron systematically defeats Erimis' defenses as he once again flanks him, but this time his blade does not find it's target.
Bereft of confidence in the face of her past failures, Sanji bolsters her resolve and quickly rushes opposite Xeron, flanking Erimis, and delivers a critical strike to her foes kidney--causing him to arch his back in excrutiating pain before falling unconscious to the floor. (crit x2 means roll twice, not actually x2 damage. Even though I rolled a 1 for you, it was still enough to drop him :)
Padre's wounds stop bleeding, but the two combatants continue to bleed to death.
"Yes!" Penn exclaims when Sanji fells the last guard. Turning to Gordo, he says with a certain look resembling a bird that had captured the cat instead of the other way around and states with a smile, "As per The Code, you are ransomed to me and my men. Standard rates would call for a 1000gp ransom, unless you would like to give up your life?" Gordo merely shakes his head to the negative. "Well then, 1000gp for my guards, and a 100gp to me for the bet you foolishly agreed too. Also, I believe my guards have some questions for you." Penn sits back, much at ease as he puffs on the clay pipe he had grown fond of during his kidnapping.

In the cases of Jake and Erimis, Grendel dips her hand in a puddle of their own blood and draws the symbol for Flower on a bandage on their chests.
With her tasks now complete she'll look to Penn, "It's going to be hard moving these bodies, any chance you can call on a healer friend for us? My magic is almost completely spent."
Looking to Gordo she adds, "I think you've been storing goods for the Ironband... we'll be taking those off your hands, including those goods you've already skimmed off them while storing their loot."
============================= Grendel will take 10 on those healing checks (result is 20), resulting in auto success.

Sighing, he slumps in his chair.
"Meeting, bah, doublespeak for a kidnapping, my good man." Penn rises, his girth rivalling the downed Bosk, and heads over to the other door and pokes his head out. Catching the attention of a serving wench, he asks her to fetch Kaol the healer, on request of her employer, Gordo. She complies immediately and leaves.
Meanwhile, catching a breather, Xeron reflects back on his past and does not recall a "Code" other than the one that most rogues lived by--kill or be killed. This "Code" must be a merchant thing.

Grendel, having gotten the location of the loot grinz and looks to Sanji and Xeron. With a cock of her head toward the chest she asks, "Either of you good with tricky locked chests?"
Twirling her morningstar by the leather sling that attaches to the hilt she remarks to Gordo, "According to the Ironband, they store their stolen loot here... with you. Heck, even they didn't trust you and suspected you were skimming something off the top. So cut the lies and show us where you kept their goods."
Once Gordo relays the correct information regarding the location of Ironband's stash, Grendel will say the following: "Speaking of business there is still the matter of 1000 gold for us and the 100 gold for master Penn. That would be in addition to whatever Ironband left in that chest there."

Answering Maikill, Grendel pipes up, "We fight because we have a contract to protect Penn. If we lost he would have had to pay ransom, since we won we collects on his bet. So... money, basically."
Sauntering over to Xeron and Sanji Grendel offers, "Best to not take chances, I don't want the chest personally just what's inside. How about we let Maikill or Bosk smash it open?"
To Penn she remarks, "Your fellow merchant here is a liar. What does your code say about us encouraging him to be more truthful?" as she finishes her queery her hand twists on the haft of her morningstar, making the wood creek.

Valla, after staring at the bodies on the ground and watching the healer do his works on Valla's fallen comrades, the Elf stares at Penn; angerly.
You... We agreed to protect your caravan, and you. Not fight like some enslaved gladiator, or for someones sick amusment.... This deed, that we have done, is not a good one... sir... Valla shakes his head, From here on out; nothing like this happens again. If your off to meet with a rival, let us know where your going an who your meeting with, and possibly take one or more of us as an escort. Going off meeting with dangerous people isn't something that was in our job description. Im thankful for the extra money, but other than that; no good will come of this..
Turning his attention to the chest, Valla has a thought! Xeron, Sanji, if you two can't find and disable the trap in the chest, I say we make Gordo open it. He knows its trapped, and probably knows how to disable it, or at least open the chest while bypassing the trap. Its his chest, right? But, Whats inside is rightfully ours, considering the the mans actions, and our victory.
He steps behind Gordo, and pokes him lightly with his sword. Pointing to the chest with his free hand, Well... Get to opening... So we can be gone from this place. You owe us.

(If this is okay) With a smile to Sanji, he says "I got it! Look at that nasty bugger! Now let me see if I can disable it."
Using his thief tools, he starts until another big smile come over his face! "Here we !DONE! (Disable device 1d20 +7 = 26).
He looks at Sanji and bows "Now My LAdy, if you want to do the honor to open the chest .... "
DM JIM -- Sorry, you cannot take 10 or 20 to disable a trap as taking 10 or 20 denotes that some times you will fail and with a trap that means you will always set it off, which I don't believe you want to do.

Penn & Gordo -- DM JIM Wednesday November 11th, 2009 5:08:38 PM
Gordo chuckles, which probably infuriates some of the group, "See Penn, no different than any other mercenary or hired hand. They may have come for you, out of some sense of duty, but they think no better of you than they of me." Gordo smirks at his rival Penn, who has adopted a sour look to his face after the recriminations leveled at him. Staringly cooly at his hirelings, Penn explains himself, "Do the streets run with blood? Are murders and rape, and whatever foul crimes that blacken the hearts of the denizen's of Mudtown occur out in the open? No. Why? Because of the Code between merchants that live and travel through here. Do you see any city guards travelling the streets of Mudtown, any at all? No. They don't care, and so a Code has been adopted by the merchants here. In cases of kidnapping or attack of rival merchants, the Code allows for ransom. If the ransom isn't paid, then it's the cemetary or Pig Alley. Normally when a merchant, such as I, have been kidnapped, and that merchant has a new non-vetted group of guards protecting him, well, the end result is usually Pig Alley. Gordo here made me a bet that you would not rescue or ransom me. You would leave me to my fate and sell my cargo as your own, but you did not, to which I was very much gladdened. I was happy that you proved him wrong, not that you had to fight for my survival."[b] Penn takes a deep breath and then continues, but more softly now, [b]"My friends, the Code, no matter how contrived it may seem, makes sure that merchants like myself aren't killed outright when we reach the outskirts of Mudtown--it is a necessary evil we live with, because no one else has come forth to bring order to the lawlessness of this place. As to why I was kidnapped, only Gordo can answer that."
Gordo looks about and offers innocently, "It was because of her," pointing at Sanji, "She made certain allegations about the Ironband and my dealings with them, so I had her followed and learned you were her employer. It was just stupid luck that you were out on your own and my men were able to 'invite' you back here for our little meeting. The fact you didn't know anything lead me to believe that you in fact, didn't know anything. I wasn't going to kill you, ransom you, yes, but not kill you. However, before I knew it, time had passed by and I didn't have anyone to send out to deliver the ransom note before it got really busy out front." Gordo shrugs his shoulders and continues, "If you would like your ransom and your winnings, please back away to my now broken door, I'll open the chest and pull out what I owe then we can conclude our business and go our seperate ways. I should warn you, the trap on the chest is very poisonous and will re-engage if the lid is closed again, so if you're thinking about rushing me to take what's in the chest while it's open, I'll close it before you can get to it, and rest assured, I may not be much of a fighter, but I am quick."

Bosk straightens alittle before speaking. Master Penn, your code makes much sense given the circumstances, howevere need to be made aware of such arrangements in order to best serve you. If you feel you are safe and that Gordo is trustworthy, I will wait outside while you and Gordo finish you r business. If you feel we need to keep an eye on him until the ransom is paid, then so be it.
After waiting for Penn's response, Bosk replies Gordo, do not mistake our anger or desire to be paid to be a reflection upon how we think of Penn. We were unaware of your code, and things would have been quicker and easier if we had killed you. It is your "invitation" to Penn and his desire for you to live wich trouble us.

Grendel nods to Gordo after Penn's explaination of 'the Code'. "Yeah, all-right, get to opening that chest then and settle up with Penn."
To Penn she responds, "I agree with Bosk, going forward it is best if you let us know about things like this Code which could come up in the future. I'm sure mud-town is full of these unspoken rules."
She moves over to Maikill before taking up a guard position at the broken door, "Plenty of time for revenge, if the orcs roam these parts we'll bump into them again sometime."
Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7 Thursday November 12th, 2009 10:08:57 AM
Once Gordo indicates that the trap is poisonous, his first reflex is to have Sanji try to disable it. But then he remember he is now a good man. So he tries to disable it (use my previous roll of 26 and will post once the outcome is known).
Bosk d20=20 ; d20=13 ; Thursday November 12th, 2009 10:18:10 AM
Watching Xeron bravely proceed to disarm the trap, both Bosk and Padre offer their assistance.
Thank you for standing by us in battle. Were it not for your bravery we might be looking into the eye of Gargul right now. If there is anything we can do to help, let us know. We may not be skilled in this area, but we can both follow directions quite well.
If Bosk and Padre cannot aid Xeron in this task, Bosk will use his roll Nat 20 to try attempt to persuade Gordo that the poison might be a danger to him if Xeron fails, and that it would be in his best interest to just open the chest for them.

Maikill HP 1/14, AC15/12/13/13 Thursday November 12th, 2009 10:25:15 AM
Maikill comes out of his foul mood a bit when Grendel offers the chance for revenge in the future.
"Revenge would be good, I wait then."
he glances around the room and then with alarm backs out of the room through the open door. While doing so, he calls a warning to Xeron.
"Man said poison will kill. Said he would open chest for us, get away and let man open chest. Why you not listen to him?"
Disable device -- DM JIM Thursday November 12th, 2009 10:55:14 AM
Xeron does not get to use the 26 he rolled, a disable device roll is made by the DM, so it could be much lower. If Xeron wishes to proceed in disabling the trap, let me know, I'll roll for him and then post the results.
Gordo is willing to open the chest, but only if everyone moves away from the chest and back to the broken door.

The chest -- DM JIM Thursday November 12th, 2009 12:25:05 PM Xeron carefully pokes and prods at the chest and the trap mechanism contained therein. One wrong move and the needles placed within could spring out and envenom the rogue, but luck would have it that on this day, that would not happen.
Opening the chest and not setting off the trap, Xeron finds several bags of coins, but nothing else. All told, it's about 2000gp.
"So you mean to rob me?" asks Gordo.
Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7 Thursday November 12th, 2009 12:32:36 PM
Xeron looks at Gordo and Penn. "I do not steal anymore. Trust me, a few days ago you will be laying dead in your own blood, your throat slit. But I am a new man. I will only take the 1000 gold pieces we earned and the 100 for Penn. The rest is still yours. But do yourself a favor: give a raise to your two warriors. They fought hard for you.[b]"
He looks at the rest of the group "[b]Now that we go Penn, let's get out of here and go back to camp."
Before leaving he approaches Gordo and whispers "If one of your wenches wants to earn some gold doing some extra curricular activities after work, send her to me "
Gordo -- DM JIM Thursday November 12th, 2009 5:44:21 PM "Heh, yeah, sure thing kid."
After Xeron takes what is owed to the group and Penn, everyone leaves and starts to head back to Motley and the cargo. Just then, everyone hears a scream come down the alleyway around a corner. Gordo immediately tells the healer to tend to his men while he tries to hap-hazardly prop his broken door back up to secure his place of business.
Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7 Thursday November 12th, 2009 8:16:01 PM
Xeron immediately goes toward the alley the scream came from "Padre, takes Mr. Penn and make sure he does attend any "meeting" unprotected."
He stops at the entrance of the alley, trying to see the reason of the commotion and the scream.

Grendel moves with Sanji and Xeron. "Those wounded should flee to safety with Penn." She's not as observant as many of the others but she'll ready an action to charge anything that threatens one of her comrades.
"I swear, battle has never called this often within a single day... May Flower keep us."
Beriothian -- DM JIM d20+4=16 ; Thursday November 12th, 2009 10:57:58 PM

Beriothian groans and looks up, struggling to get his eyes to focus on the figure addressing him.
"Brains.... sucked? ....Huh?"
He then collapses in the mud again, his face making a loud squelching sounds as it hits the mud.
Grendel (Jay) AC:15/10/15 HP 9/9 d20+6=21 ; Friday November 13th, 2009 8:00:04 AM
Calling back to the others she says, "It's a wounded elf, no sign of his aggressor."
Grendel will check the man to see what his condition is. If he is currently below 0 hp and not stabilized she will use her last magic for the day to heal him (cure minor wounds for 1 hp). Otherwise she will tend him as needed to get him back on his feet. Grendel offers Xeron a friendly smile. "Hey... thanks for watching my back."
Bosk Friday November 13th, 2009 12:05:13 PM
As the others rush out the door, the two clerics of Gargul take up a defensive position between Penn and the door.
Turning to address Penn, Padre speaks."Master Penn, I think it would be to our benefit to stop by the healers on the way back to camp. After all of our battles today, there is an increased likely hood that someone will try to attack the camp trying to catch us tired and unprepared.
Bosk nods his head in agreement. You can never be too careful in Mud Town, especially with the strange deaths and rumors of a brain sucking monster about.
When Grendel calls out that she found a wounded elf, both clerics feel the desire to assist. It is only thier commitment to protecting Penn that keeps them in the room.
Be careful out there. His attacker may still be around.
As the two men wait, Bosk strains his ears listening for movement or sounds of a struggle.
Penn -- DM JIM Friday November 13th, 2009 5:50:29 PM "Ah well, speaking of the cargo, I was on the way back from the gate and my number has come up. I still have a couple of hours to get my cargo through the gate, so after we help this fellow, I'll need you and the others to walk with the wagons to the gate... speaking of which, what was that all about a missing wagon? Do I need to buy or hire another?"
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:6/7 Friday November 13th, 2009 7:41:35 PM
Beriothian shakily stands up and leans against the wall of the closest building. Blood trickles down his face from several small wounds, though the damage appears to be minimal.
"Robbery? Kidnapping? No, it was nothing like that. I had just finished nursing a pint in one of the taverns and had to take care of some business. Since Mudtown doesn't have much in the way of plumbing I was looking for a place back here to...."
From the stares coming from the blurry faces in front of him and the blood dripping down his cheek the rogue decides it's best to jump forward in the story.
"...anyway, next thing I know something sneaks up on me from behind. My head was suddenly enveloped by this tentacled mass.... Don't look at me like that! I may not have seen it, but I promise it was tentacles!"
His eyes start to focus again as his daze from the sudden attack wears off. He draws in a long breath and grumbles dejectedly:
"I can't believe that in a town like this there is something with enough finesse that it could completely get the drop on me."
Penn -- DM JIM Friday November 13th, 2009 9:39:51 PM "If everything is alright, we should be going, not much time left." Looking at the newcomer, "Since we don't have time to get everyone healed up, how about a job, umm, what was your name?"
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:6/7 Friday November 13th, 2009 10:22:59 PM
He looks at puck, then looks at the rest of the party who clearly have spent the day in combat.
I could use a job right about now. The name's Beriothian, it's a pleasure to meet you.
Venbolio Penn -- DM JIM Friday November 13th, 2009 11:15:09 PM "Glad to meet you. Venbolio Penn, merchant of spell components at your service... well, you're at my service now, so, anyways, we better be off." Looking down at the mud and muck covering his shoes, he pulls out a very small cushion from a pouch, and places it behind him. It immediately expands and lifts Penn's enormous bulk into the air where he sits crosslegged, about 5ft above the nasty ground. He then pulls out an umbrella from the same small pouch, opens it and then fastens it to the floating cushion--those with sharp eyes will notice the magic of the cushion cleaning his clothes. Motioning to lead the way, he follows close behind.
When everyone arrives at the fenced-in camp, Motley is dutifully guarding the camp. He's a bit dirtier than before--maybe he was doing tactical rolls or some such on the ground. He greets the group cheerfully at first, then is chagrined to find out he missed a good fight. A low moan escapes from one of the tents.
Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7 d20=11 ; Saturday November 14th, 2009 8:07:37 AM
Xeron looks at the newcomer joining this motley group of "guards". He gives a little nod with his head unsure if he will stick around or quick like some others before him.
"Tentacles? In Mudtown? This would agree with Maikill story. What could it be? Have I ever heard such a story before? Nah never, must be just a ploy"
(knowledge local: 1d20 = 11)
He addresses Penn "Regarding the cart, well we had complications when we used it to drop the bodies in Pig Alley. You can deduct the cost from the group pay " He looks at Maikill and winks.
When he hears the moan att he camp he will try to decide if it is a moan of pain or pleasure. If he deems it to be of pleasure, he will smiles and move away from that tent. If he deems it to be of pain, he will rush to the tent.
Grendel (Jay) AC:15/10/15 HP 9/9 Saturday November 14th, 2009 9:28:26 AM
Grendel is glad to be back at camp. It would have been nice to finally get some rest but it seems that the cargo needs to be moved now. Not the worst turn of events as that means they will spend the night in the relative safety of Hook City rather than Mudtown. Grendel packs up her gear and begins to ready Penn's goods for shipment, double checking the wagons and the like.
"We all set to go here folks?"
James for Bosk and Padre Saturday November 14th, 2009 11:09:45 AM
As the group returned to camp, weary from battle and half expecting another attack, the tall Minotaur introduces himself to Beriothian. The Eye of Gargul was upon you today, I am glad to see that you came out all right.
Reaching his hand out to the elf, he continues. My name is Bosk, though many refer to me as The Horned Cleric. Both the Padre and myself are followers of Gargul, the Lord of balance, of life and death. We had some hard battles the last two days, and while disposing of the bodies it appears that our cart was stolen by your attacker.
Upon arriving to camp, Bosk aids Grendel in packing up the gear. Padre Sixtus works wordlessly beside them, his green eyes showing that he is lost deep within in his thoughts.
I have only just arrived in Mud Town, and already have been four battles. I came here to teach people of Gargul, not to send them to meet him.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:6/7 d20+7=8 ; Saturday November 14th, 2009 11:59:14 AM
Beriothian smiles and nods toward Bosk.
"I myself am a follower of Wardd, god of luck. His guiding hand has saved me more than once."
His finger slides over on of the silver buttons on his armor as he says this. At his moment he hears the moan coming from the tent. Remembering that Motly, who had been on guard duty, was covered in dirt when they arrived Beriothian wonders if there is something dangerous lurking about them. He quickly scans around to look for danger.

Maikill HP 1/14, AC15/12/13/13 Saturday November 14th, 2009 1:00:27 PM
Turning to the boss who Maikill is justing getting to know, he is amazed he is floating in the air.
"Horned one right, brain sucker steal cart. Almost kill elf here. We hurry into city be safe from brains sucked away. Need new cart."
turning to the new recruit, Maikill reaches out a hand
"Name Maikill, come here to find orcs to kill. Find these people instead early this morning. I new too. You lucky brain sucker no kill you. I see it in Pig Alley, crawling on dead bodies. Think it like fresh brain better. I smart, run away before it suck my brain."
Maikill then busily starts to load up the goods.
"We hurry, get into city where safe."
he looks more than a little worried.
Venbolio Penn -- DM JIM Saturday November 14th, 2009 2:42:55 PM Xeron finds the half-orc Ironband prisoner still where he left him, still trussed up and slowly regaining consciousness.
"Right then, Motley come with me. We have a wagon, horses and drivers to hire. Luckily they're just over that way, so we won't be out of eyesight. In the meantime, please strike the camp and do something with that half-orc prisoner in there. Oh, and by the way, sorry I didn't mention it earlier, because I thought you knew. Only merchants, or people who have something to sell or trade are allowed into the city." Penn and Motley go across the street to find a few drovers looking for work, hiring them and their wagon.

Maikill looks sternly at Penn, though it is easy to see that he seems afraid.
Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7 Sunday November 15th, 2009 3:45:04 PM
Xeron looks at the half-orc. "So your mighty friends from the Ironband will come and kill us and burn the place. That is what you said. We were so scared that we took a little walk down to your camp and wiped them out and fed the bodies to the dog. Katrin was smart enough to see that she joined a band a of loser. but you? You think to only think with your orc brain. I think that I will personally deliver you to the guards for attended murder on Mr. Penn. So unless you got a better idea, time to get up and walk to meet the law in Hook City. do not worry, I won't kill you although I would love to but I am not sure the guards will be as considerate. All you had to do was collaborate with us ......"

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:6/7 Sunday November 15th, 2009 6:16:24 PM
Beriothian glances on more time toward the tent where the moan came from. Nobody from the party seems particularly concerned about the noise so he decides it is probably either a party member recovering from a wound or the captive he heard they have. After helping the others to pack up he double checks his equipment and thrn takes a moment to clean the cuts on his head.

Valla AC:16/16/12 HP:6/6 Monday November 16th, 2009 11:54:01 AM
Valla shakes himself from his perpetual daze at hearing Penn say that the group doesn't go into the city with him... In that one single moment Valla's mind began racing. He had planned on going into the city with Penn, and eventually using Penn to start his own, smaller, buisness. I looks as though he may have to begin this himself, this is not good. The elf is drained of all his power, his energy is nearly depleted as well. The need to trance is becoming more apparant with each passing moment, Valla leans on his quarter staff as he humbly helps the group pack up bed rolls and other minor things.
While doing the work, he attempts to talk with his comrades, looks to Maikill; Friend, its ok. We'll survive. Although, before Penn enters the city we had best purchase some tents for ourselves. Or else suffer the weather, even in the extreme cases.
He turns to the new elf, Beriothian; Hello Beri. I know our employer has offered you this job, but as you can see, this job will end very soon. The moment Penn walks through the City gates. So, what can you offer to our group, what skills might you have, that will help us as a whole, to stay alive and prosper in the hellish place?
WIth a heavy sigh, he speaks to Xeron [b] Xeron; where in mudtown, might we find an Inn? A place with rooms, and a bed? Somewhere we would be somewhat safe from prying eyes, tricksies and them damned sneaky gnomes? I don't think tonight would be a grand time to sleep in the open. Our spell abilities are gone, as a group, on top of everyone being wounded and tired... Any thoughts from you miss Sanji

Making sure that the half-orc is securely tied up, Xeron gets him to his feet and gets him ready to be delivered to the guards.
"Valla, I did not go to inn and taverns. I squated and lives on the streets once I quit the guild ..... "
James for Bosk and Padre Monday November 16th, 2009 1:20:36 PM

Grendel's jaw drops as Penn says they won't be coming in with him. She figured this was the ticket inside Hook City in the first place. She settles her mind and begins to apply some logic to the situation.
"Master Penn, forgive my ignorance on the subject but I was hoping to get inside Hook City. Would you not be allowed a small company of body guards to accompany you? If not..." she removes her helmet of disguise and shows it to him, "Could I say I was considering the sale of this item and be permitted in? Even if I don't actually wish to sell it?"

Sanji gathers up her gear as the others discuss where to stay tonight. I'm on board with the whole "staying at an Inn idea". I would love to have a nice matress under my back instead of the cold, wet ground. Plus, I still owe a round of ale to the group and I intend to deliver. I'm a woman of my word.
Sanji gives a nod and a wink to the newcomer and continues about her business. She will walk with Xeron as he brings the captive to the city guards.
ooc: sorry for the brief posting. I work in retail and we are gearing up for the day after thanksgiving.
Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7 Monday November 16th, 2009 3:49:59 PM
Xeron laughs out loud at Grendel comments "Lady, do you really believe they would let you in based on your good looks? Only one thing opens you the door to Hook City: MONEY! Do you think that Penn cared about you? He hired us to have someone that could die protecting his cargo. We happened to be cheaper than the Ironband, that is all. Do you think if all it took was to be with a merchant to enter Hook City, why so many thugs would wait outside? Grendel, your innocence is beautiful to watch but you need a reality check. We are nothing more than hired mercenaries. Until we have the cash to open the doors of Hook City, we will be stuck in Mudtown. Welcome of my world! "
Grendel (Jay) AC:15/10/15 HP 9/9 Monday November 16th, 2009 4:31:32 PM
Grendel scratches her head. "Well, how much money does it take? We've got some decent loot recently... more than most commoners see in a lifetime. How much exactly does it take?"
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:6/7 Monday November 16th, 2009 8:02:03 PM
Beriothian responds to Valla
"Despite the impression the teeth marks on my head may give you, I have a very keen eye when it comes to spotting enemies and am very handy with a rapier. Also, due to the size and current condition of the party Penn thought it would be wise to strengthen the defense of his cargo before leaving. By the way, what exactly is it we are being paid to protect?
Penn -- DM JIM Monday November 16th, 2009 8:09:40 PM
How heavy fell the rain that day From burdened clouds of mournful grey. The torrent forced them stay their height - Composure swayed by onerous might. - Mark Slaughter
Penn looks askance at Xeron's outburst, but let the matter go--no use in starting a fight when his business was about done. "We can drop off the prisoner when we reach the gate. In answer to your query, Grendel, if you are not a permanent citizen of Hook City, it requires at least 10,000gp in trade value to enter the city--much more to live there." After a brief pause and every minute costing him another silver piece to the drovers he hired, Penn motions for the group to travel to the gate.
Upon reaching the gate, Penn hands over his chit and the guard replies that he barely made it and will be the last wagon allowed in for the day. Penn's wagon's are taken inside a huge barbican, some 100' in length and 40' wide, and unloaded--at this time the half-orc prisoner is also turned in. During the unloading Penn addresses the group, "Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for quite an interesting time, perhaps next time I'm coming back to town, it will be a little quieter." Smiling he continues, "The only advice that I can give you that is worth anything in this town, is stick together. Friends are hard to come by, ones you trust even harder. Though some of you may not think of yourselves as friends, it's more than a lot of people in this gods forsaken town have. Lastly, here is what I owe you all, with a little bonus for rescuing me."
Out of the belt pouch he had previously pulled his floating cushion and umbrella from, Penn takes out and gives two pouches to each person, except Beri--he only receives one pouch. Beri's pouch contains 100gp, whereas the rest of the pouches contain 500gp each. Also Venbolio presents to the party a signed parchment that is a magically-authenticated reference from him to any future employers. "Good luck to you all until we meet again."
With that said and his wagons unloaded, Venbolio Penn walks into the barbican--the gates and portcullis closing behind him. A light rain begins to fall and so begins another night in Mudtown.
Everyone is 2nd level and receives 1 Hero Point, except for Beri since he just joined. If you would like to nominate someone for a Hero Point, please state so and the reason why in an OOC post here.

Valla AC:16/16/12 HP:6/6 d20+3=17 ; Monday November 16th, 2009 11:38:15 PM
Valla nods to Penn, and thanks him for the gold. Have a good time, sir. While counting his gold piecies Valla begins to back away from the giant gate, What now friends? Im in need of some rest, as soon as possible. I think we need to find us a merchant, and buy a few things, then find a place to rest for the night. Begin looking for more work in the morning. This brain sucking creature will have to wait for now, I think at least... The elf gives a small smirk Beri's way.
Valla tucks his pouches deep in his robes, hidden from prying eyes, and most knives as well. Valla thinks for a minute about what he's heard of Inns and beds for rent, under a roof, in Mud Town.

Knowledge Check -- DM JIM Tuesday November 17th, 2009 2:21:18 AM
Valla thinks about it and relates that anything can be had in Mudtown, if you know the right person and have enough gold. Everything except magic items--the selling of which is heavily regulated by the powers that be within the city proper.
Perhaps the inn, Cold Comfort, would suit the groups needs. "Group." In the back of his mind, Valla's subconscious poked at him--they needed a group name. You can buy anything at standard book prices except room and board. The common room and food will cost you 1gp/day; a semi-private room plus meals (4 people max) is 10gp/day/person; and finally a private room plus meals is 100gp/day. This is probably why most people sleep in tents--but they also get scurvy, and never feel dry.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:6/7 Tuesday November 17th, 2009 7:41:59 AM
Beriothian thanks Penn for the letter of recommendation and adds the gold to his own. He pulls the hood of his his cloak over his head and turns to the group.
We should probably start heading back as we make our plans, this is not the best location to be standing around now that night is falling.
Grendel (Jay) AC:15/10/15 HP 9/9 Tuesday November 17th, 2009 9:24:26 AM
Grendel counts out 105 gp, divides it up into 5 groups of 21gp each and hands them to each of the old members (sorry Beriothian) "This covers my debt for the helm of disguise." Stashing the rest of her gold in under her armor she looks to the others. "I suggest we sleep in a semi-private room for the night. Perhaps we could find one that sleeps six or have two of us crash on the floor with bedrolls?"
Moving over to Valla she asks quietly. "Can I ask you for a favor Valla? I've been interested in studying the arcane techniques and I thought maybe you could show me a thing or two... " with that she pulls a book from her pack and shows it to Valla, the tome is filled with her arcane notes and a few spells she's very close to completing.

ooc: Leveled up. Adjusted header appropriately. Took a level of Wizard. So the rest of you know, Grendel is going the mystic theurge path. She's focusing on buff spells, healing and support magic. Mixed with a health dose of item creation feats she should be able to supply the group basic potions once she hits 3rd level, if we're not already in Hook City by then.
Maikill HP 15/28, AC15 Tuesday November 17th, 2009 10:18:44 AM
Maikill nods at the suggestion of Grendel about the room.
"Could use warm bed and healing. No want be outside with brain sucker. Good idea."
OOC: updated header showing new hp's for 2nd level, still down 13 hp of damage from fight.
Motley and Padre -- DM JIM Tuesday November 17th, 2009 12:36:45 PM
It is about this time that Motley and Padre say their farewell, each having their seperate reasons for leaving the group--Padre does mention taking the money he's earned and starting an orphanage.
James for Bosk and Padre Tuesday November 17th, 2009 12:46:18 PM
ooc: Taking a lvl of rouge. I am working towards a Grim Avenger. rolled d8=3. Used a Hero Point to Reroll. d8=8!!! Yeah! Will update character sheet tonight or tomorrow. Also, I nominate Xeron for a hero point for fighting the bouncers.
Uh, James, isn't Rogue a d6 hp? :)
James for Bosk and Padre Tuesday November 17th, 2009 1:55:23 PM
oops, was looking at skill points.
Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7 Tuesday November 17th, 2009 2:30:20 PM
OOC: Will update character sheet later. ================================================================================== Xeron smiles at Grendel face when she hears the cost of JUST getting pass the gate: 10k Gold. And then, there are the expenses once inside. Not that he have a clue what in pass these big gates.
He listens to the group discussion about lodging but does not intervene. He is so use to sleep anyone half dry that the idea of an actual establishment amazes him. This is luxury indeed.
Once Padre and Motley leave, he barely acknowledge their departure. He is sick and tired of these "Adventurers" showing up and lasting a fight or less: Ariman, Naru, Lenwe, Padre, Motley. Tired of these people not understand what was at stake.
As the group starts walking toward the inn, Xeron will look for the beggars and if he sees a woman who is mentally deficient, he will drop gold to her.
=========================================================================== I nominate MAikill: anyone dying three times and willing to go for more is a hero
James for Bosk and Padre Tuesday November 17th, 2009 5:02:58 PM
Rerolled a d6. HP is 3, and I had to use my hero points to get it.
Sanji (Eric) AC: 18/15/13 HP: 8 d20+4=21 ; Tuesday November 17th, 2009 6:50:24 PM I don't know about all you folks, but all this swinging and missing can really make you work up an appetite. I can't wait to get some warm food into my belly. Maybe even sit next to a fire for a little while and sooth some aching muscles. The thought of a warm meal and a relaxing night help to erase the stresses of the day. Hopefully, there will not be any more battles to fight or employers to rescue until morning.
I've been thinking. What do you folks think about continuing to try our luck as a group of adventurers? I know that I wasn't sure if we'd make it through the past couple of day with out killing each other, but Penn was right. You need friends in Mudtown. I, for one, would be willing to keep you guys around for a little while longer, provided it's not too much of a bore. Sanji flashes her crooked smile during this jest, hoping to convey an appropriate amount of humor.
As the group makes its way to the Inn, Sanji has a tough time letting old habits die. She regularly checks behind her to see if anyone is taking an unusual amount of interest in them.*
*Spot: 21
OOC: I second the nomination to Maikill. We should start keeping track of how many times each of us is knocked out. Could make for some interesting RPing.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:6/7 d20+7=25 ; d20+7=25 ; Tuesday November 17th, 2009 7:06:27 PM That sounds like a good plan to me, especially with brain eating monsters around.
Beriothian scans into the darkness, taking full advantage of being an elf as he peers into the growing darkness and listens for anything out of the ordinary.

"I'm exhausted, let's find a safe place to crash already!"

James for Bosk and Padre Wednesday November 18th, 2009 11:36:58 AM
After the group arrives at the Inn, and everyone is enjoying their ale at the bar, the Taur watches the group and observes Berothian's continual scanning of their surroundings. It's good that he is keeping an eye out for danger, rather than keeping his eye on us. It would be nice to have another pair of eyes around, especially another that can see in low light now that Padre had left.
Realizing that Berothian was never formally asked to join the group, the cleric begins to speak. Berothian, we don't know you very well, but Penn trusted you enough to invite you into the group and to help guard his merchandise even though we were weakened and you could have taken advantage of the situation. Although this is hardly enough to say that I fully trust you yet, we are short of men and could use you in our party. We haven't talked this over yet, but if no one would you consider joining our group for a while? After pausing a second he adds Oh, and just so you know, if you cross us Xeron will gut you like a fish in your sleep. As Bosk says this last part, he allows his eyes to soften and a smile to creep across his face.
Stepping away from Berothian, the cleric speaks a little louder, so the rest of the group can hear. I was just speaking to Berothian, how would everyone feel about letting him work with us for a while? At least until we replace Padre and Motley?[b]
After the group respond, Bosk continues, [b]Sanji is right. In a town like Mud Town comrades you can trust are hard to come by, but it is the only way to survive. However, if we are to make a name for ourselves we need to come up with a name for our group...something that will resonate with prospective employers and discourage those like the Iron Band. Any ideas?
Cold Comfort Inn -- DM JIM Wednesday November 18th, 2009 12:17:30 PM
This phantasm of falling petals vanishes into moon and flowers... - Okyo 1890
The Cold Comfort Inn was a boon to the group; Upon entering the establishment through the sedate parlor, the group was greeted by a blustery warmth that soaked deep into their clothes and made to seem as if their faces were greeted by a gentle summer breeze. The place had a large common room and roaring fireplace that was large enough for Bosk to step into without hitting his head on the mantle--it currently was filled with fresh burning logs whose bark was popping and crackling in protest of being consumed for the patron's comfort.
The bar however was small, probably not a place to come to drink and have a rowdy party, but more of a place of calm in a sea of mud. The prices were fair and several tables and rooms were available for the night, but were filling up fast. Ordering their drinks, the group gathered about a large table and continued to converse to one another about their future. Beri, the newcomer, kept a sharp eye out, but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary--neither did Sanji or Maikill, ever wary of danger in this lawless town.
Grendel (Jay) AC:15/10/15 HP 13/13 Wednesday November 18th, 2009 12:37:02 PM
As the others grab some seats Grendel nudges Sanji with a smile, "I'll help you carry those drinks over..."
Once away from the rest of the group Grendel suggests that they room together. She doesn't personally feel comfortable rooming with boys and hopes Sanji will room with her so she doesn't have to spend the night alone or with strangers.
Later on Grendel will suggest to the group. "Tomorrow morning I want to walk about and see what merchants are waiting. See if I can drum up a gig or purchase some spell components. Anyone want to come with?"
Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7 Wednesday November 18th, 2009 2:55:39 PM
As Bosk mentions to Beri what will happen to him if he betrays us, Xeron smiles at the newcomer and a dagger appears out of nowhere and Xeron the universal cut-throat sign with his index finger. And as quickly the dagger disappear as Xeron smiles grows bigger.
The rogue eats in silence, looking at his plate of food. Before retiring for the night in the dude room, Xeron leaves the inn for about 30 minutes.
Sanji (Eric) AC: 18/15/13 HP: 8 Wednesday November 18th, 2009 4:07:56 PM
Sanji returns Grendel's smile and gives a nod to her question. No worries miss. It's good for us girls to stick together. After all you'll certainly have nothing to fear from me. I obviously couldn't hit a barn if I was standing in it. My martial skills need more than a little developement. Sanji brings the round of ale to her comrads and is given a warming sensation as she thinks of that word.... comrads.
Yeah we deffinately need a name. It should be something simple yet fierce that suggests strength.
At the mention of drumming up more business, Sanji again pipes up. I'll go along. I'd enjoy stretching my legs.
Maikill HP 15/28, AC15 Wednesday November 18th, 2009 4:08:41 PM
The horned cleric seems to have a good suggestion, and seems welcoming of strangers. That is a nice change.
"Yes, you join us. Help us. You know what brain sucker look like too, help watch for it."
He thinks long and hard for a name for the group, finally he has got it.
"How bout we call us Iron Fist. That sound good."
The new half orc has a good idea, and Maikill nods eagerly.
"I thank you for saving my life, I dead not for you. I go with you to buy things. Need new metal shirt. Leather let in many cuts, no good. I protect you if you attacked in market too."
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:6/7 Wednesday November 18th, 2009 7:55:55 PM
Beriothian gladly accepts Bosk's offer to join the group. Out of the corner of his eye he notices Xeron make a threatening gesture. He also hears Sanji and Grendel discussing getting a separate room and can't help but wonder if Xeron is the reason why.
I don't particularly need any more supplies, except possibly an extra days rations depending on our next job. But I would be happy to keep you guys company, it would give me an opportunity to gather more information about monster that attacked me last night.
Grendel (Jay) AC:15/10/15 HP 13/13 Wednesday November 18th, 2009 8:59:05 PM
It is a good conversation that revolves around the table this evening. The stress of combat seems to have forged bonds of trust.... and friendship.
"I don't know how I feel about 'Iron Fist' as a name. It's a bit more martial than we are and reminds me too much of the Ironband. I think if we choose a name it should stand above the carnal nature of others who work this business. Something elegant, maybe something that reflects our beliefs, I dunno. 'The Trust' seems professional and mysterious, 'Scales of Judgement' has a draconian sound and resounds with Gargul theme, 'Peacekeepers' seems soft... I dunno. Maybe we should think on this for a bit. For now our rep for toppling Ironband might be enough until we agree on a name as far as PR goes."
Unless further conversation keeps her up longer, Grendel plans on hitting the sack early. She'll fork over 20 gp if Sanji does the same so they can share a 4 person room for just the two of them. She hopes to explore Mud town the next morning.
Maikill HP 15/28, AC15 Wednesday November 18th, 2009 9:07:31 PM "No like Iron Fist? Maybe Iron Sword or Iron Clan?"
PC damage -- DM JIM Wednesday November 18th, 2009 10:04:49 PM

Additional Hero Point and XP awards -- DM JIM Wednesday November 18th, 2009 10:16:20 PM
The following PC's have earned an additional Hero Point award:
Grendel, Maikill, Valla, and Xeron.
With these additional HP's comes an additional 60xp for each character. Congrats!
Grendel (Jay) AC:15/10/15 HP 13/13 Thursday November 19th, 2009 10:17:37 AM
ooc: We're not chalk full of healers anymore. I suggest we spend the night resting. Grendel can make heal checks to provide long term care, which will increase your healing from sleep to 2hp/level (4hp for those of us who are wounded). Then Bosk and I can blow some spells to get us the rest of the way up. We can hang around the inn for the day (I know Grendel will want to scribe a couple scrolls), rest-up so we're all full on spells and go out the next morning.
Thoughts?
Maikill HP 1/28, AC15 Thursday November 19th, 2009 10:37:10 AM
ooc: That is fine or we could find a healer for hire and get it done. Otherwise we need to hole up for a few days, and that may cost just as much.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:6/7 Thursday November 19th, 2009 11:18:27 AM
Bariothian turns to Grendel and Maikill.
Finding a cheap healer would be wise, better than wasting a full day. Though I don't know anything about the price of a healer around here.
He continues to nurse his drink again with a reflective look upon his face, when a smile crawls across his face.
Hmmm, a name that sounds tough as iron, isn't martial, and is elegant. Maybe it's just the ale, but all I can think of is a giant... iron... butterfly. Yup, it's probably just the ale.
Grendel (Jay) AC:15/10/15 HP 13/13 Thursday November 19th, 2009 11:49:08 AM
ooc: even if we could find one willing to cast for us outside of Hook City, the DMG rates are 10gp x spell level x caster level. That gets expensive quick. I'm just frustrated because I'd like to explore Mud Town... I'm just not willing to do it without a bodyguard and full compliment of spells at my disposal.
Bosk, let Grendel know if you want some scrolls. Some goes for Valla with arcane, though my spell choices are a bit different than yours... we take a different approach to combat and magic, which is good.
XP, healing costs and scrolls -- DM JIM Thursday November 19th, 2009 12:35:31 PM
ooc: Prices in Mudtown are going to be 50gp per CLW. Also, be careful not to scribe too many scrolls, if your XP costs drops you low enough, you could lose a level.
Grendel (Jay) AC:15/10/15 HP 13/13 Thursday November 19th, 2009 4:25:37 PM "Alright, it's late. I'm going to crash. I'll heal Maikill some tomorrow morning after he rests. Bosk should be able to heal himself. If we're going to stay in for the day to re-coop our magic I'll be scribing scrolls." and with that Grendel departs to her room.
Before she leaves she blows her last boon for the day on Maikill. (Cure Minor Wounds - 1hp healed)
=============== DM Jim - I'll get you a breakdown of what I'm scribing later on.
Maikill HP 2/28, AC15 Thursday November 19th, 2009 4:43:40 PM
Maikill is surprised that the half-orc woman would use her last spell upon him.
"You good, help me many times. I help you, go with you where you go. Protect you."
and with that Maikill begins to follow her as she heads to her room. As it becomes obvious that her and Sanji are sharing a room to be away from the men his greenish-gray skin takes on a hint of red.
"Oh, sorry. I go with men. See you in morning. Yell if in trouble, I come quick."
and with that Maikill heads off to his room to get some much needed rest.
Cold Comfort Inn -- DM JIM Thursday November 19th, 2009 5:53:08 PM

Sanji (Eric) AC: 18/15/13 HP: 8 d20+4=7 ; d20+6=15 ; Thursday November 19th, 2009 6:37:45 PM
Sanji bids Grendel and Maikill good night and orders another round of ale for her remaining comrads. I feel a little bad about not coming through earlier, so I'll cover this round too.
She will try to be one of the last to retire for the night. When she finally goes to her room she will make one last check of her suroundings.* Upon reaching her room, Sanji will try not to make too much niose and allow Grendel to sleep as she prepars for bed. She will remove her armor and place it next to her pack at the foot of her bed. Her rapier will be leaning against the wall, within arms reach, and her dagger will be under her pillow.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:6/7 Thursday November 19th, 2009 6:51:38 PM I only need to be in a trance for 4 hours, so I can keep an eye on things for a good portion of the night. Just let me know when the best time to start my trance is.
Maikill HP 2/28, AC15 Thursday November 19th, 2009 7:21:04 PM
Maikill is tired and almost dead. He drops upon the mat and snores loudly, not even realizing that watch is being set.
Bosk Thursday November 19th, 2009 9:08:28 PM Thank you Beriothian. Can you wake me at dawn. After I have prayed to Gargul and received his blessing for the day I will heal he others and take over the watch.
Valla AC:16/16/12 HP:6/6 d20+4=9 ; Thursday November 19th, 2009 10:24:25 PM
Valla nods his head to Grendel, A half orc wizard huh? He chuckles a bit, Sure, we can work together on a few things, surly we can learn from one another as well.
Sipping his ale, and listening to the conversation about the groups name, Valla has an unusual idea, The Mercs. Or is that our current occupation?
After agreeing to have Beri in the group, Valla stands to retire himself, My bones are tired, I must trance, and rest. I'll take the first watch though, so I can have uninterrupted rest to study and trance. I'd be honored to adventure with all of you. Standing up to an enemy who has been established here for sometime, and feared by most, we did that together. And Lived, by being a team. Looking out for each other. If it wasn't for the people around you now, none of us would be standing tonight. The elf lifts his mug, finishes it off, and bows to the entire group, in the morning!
Valla then goes to the room, and keeps a watch for about four hours or so, before waking the next in line.

Grendel (Jay) AC:15/10/15 HP 13/13 Friday November 20th, 2009 8:55:38 AM
ooc: 'The Alliance' sounds good. It'd be nice if we could flavor it up a bit. Maybe invoking the name of the God of Merchants might be a good idea. "Ffloy's Protectors" or "Mercs of Ffloy". I'm sure we'll come up with something sooner or later.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:6/7 2d20+7=42 ; d20+7=19 ; d20+7=11 ; Friday November 20th, 2009 12:24:00 PM
Beri nods towards Valla. In that case I will start my trance after I finish this drink. Let me know when it's time for the second watch.
After his drink he heads to his room to start his trance, placing his rapier on the floor next to his right hand. In four hours he will be awakened and start the second watch, keeping an eye on the rooms and listening for danger. When dawn comes he will awaken Bosk.

Cold Comfort Inn -- DM JIM d6=2 ; d6=2 ; Friday November 20th, 2009 12:39:43 PM
Xeron returns from his solo trip to who knows where, and is noticeably tanned on one side of his face, a bright redness alighting his face. The group beds down for the night and it passes quietly--yes, there are a few screams and shouts, perhaps someone being strangled outside the inn, but that's a typical night here in Mudtown. All arise early in the morning, alive, to the smell of bacon, eggs, sausage and strong coffee brewing downstairs.
Grendel (Jay) AC:15/10/15 HP 13/13 Friday November 20th, 2009 1:24:26 PM
ooc: I'd like to scribe scrolls for a day. Maybe trade with Valla on a scroll for scroll basis. If Bosk wants some cleric spells on a scroll I can set him up. I've got a limit of 60 1st level spells I can crank out before losing a level due to the xp loss. Let me know. If we fast forward I'll just make a list within the 1000gp limit of magic crafting in a day for you Jim. =)
I'd like to explore the town as well but can't do 2 things at once. Plus the group needs some healing, so maybe we should wait until after we spend a day at the Inn to make our way out and about.

Maikill HP 28/28, AC15 Friday November 20th, 2009 4:04:46 PM
Maikill awakes to find Grendel administering to him. Soon, his wounds seem to magically close and most of the pain goes with it.
"I say before, you nice. Thank you for helping Maikill. I feel stronger now, next time I no let them kill me. I protect you. Maybe I need metal shirt, stay alive longer. You want to go shop, I go with you. Watch you, make safe."
Feeling much better, Maikill is ready to help the group think about a name.
"You no like Iron Fist? Maybe we name for god like you say. Ffloy's Iron Strong Team? They call us FIST for short. Nobody bother FIST."
Maikill beams proudly, never before has he had such good ideas.
Grendel (Jay) AC:15/10/15 HP 13/13 Friday November 20th, 2009 4:25:11 PM
Grendel just smiles, "I think I'll stay in today Maikill, thanks. Maybe tomorrow we can go for a walk and see what Mud Town has to offer. If you and the others want to double check the old Ironband territory, maybe we can set-up our operations there... if someone else hasn't laid claim to it yet. If you do go out, can you pick-up two platnum rings for me? They don't need to be ornate, but something around 50gp per ring would be nice. If not, I'll look for them tomorrow."

Scribing scrolls -- DM JIM Friday November 20th, 2009 4:51:36 PM
ooc: Please remember that when scribing a scroll, you must have the spell available for the day. Scribing the spell onto a scroll uses that spell for the day. You can only scribe one scroll of 1000gp or less a day. Scrolls are the only item that you can put multiple spells on, i.e. you can scribe one scroll with multiple spells on it in one day if the total cost is 1000gp or less, but you cannot scribe 2 or more scrolls with 1 spell each no matter the cost.
If you're going to heal people today and no longer have the spell, then you can't scribe it onto a scroll.
Cold Comfort Inn -- DM JIM Friday November 20th, 2009 5:27:04 PM "By the gods! What is going on here!" exclaims a rather nervous man, who is a little more than aggitated, to the owner of the Cold Comfort. Holding up his hands to calm the man does little to relieve the situation, "Another one! They found another one this morning, about three blocks over--skull cracked wide open and his brain gone! What are we going to do, Lou!"
Still motioning for the man to calm down, "It'll be alright, Jae, I'll talk to the other merchants around here and see if we can muster together a reward to find the killer." Wringing his hands to stop from screaming aloud, "It won't help! You know what kind of business I run! The braineater only comes out at night and that's the only time I'm open! I haven't been to bed yet, I don't think I could sleep, I need a drink, Lou, a stiff one, something that will knock me out cold, by the gods, Lou, I think I'm losing my mind." Lou chuckles a little when Jae mentions losing his mind, "Take a breath, Jae, you're talking a mile a minute--and if you did lose your mind, the braineater wouldn't have anything to do with you."
Smiling, Lou consoles his friend, "Look, Jae, I'll look into it and get something moving on this, okay? Today, promise." Jae nods his head and looks like he can't stop, "Okay, okay, I'll talk to you later, okay? Later, yes, yes, later." Jae spins on his heels and quickly exits the Cold Comfort, leaving the owner, Lou, weary from the news of the day.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:6/7 d20+3=11 ; Friday November 20th, 2009 7:09:55 PM
Beriothian sits at the table eating his eggs and sausage. The sausage clearly isn't pork, but it's still surprisingly good. Upon hearing the commotion he is about to inquire about this possible job when Jae suddenly turns and leaves. Not wanting to lose their best source of information on the most recent attack he quickly excuses himself and chases after hoping to catch Jae just outside the door. Upon catching up to Jae he will glean whatever details from him he can.

Maikill HP 28/28, AC15 Friday November 20th, 2009 8:25:51 PM
Nodding eagerly at Grendel, Maikill agrees.
"Yes, I buy rings for you. No worry, I buy them. Need metal shirt too. Anyone want come, help talk to store man for me?"
Then he gobbles down his breakfast and overhears the Inn keeper speaking about the brain eater.
"I see brain eater other day, know what look like. Elf see it too. It no like elf brain. When I see it, then it afraid. Run away."
Maikill then takes an extra large helping of sausage to help pay for the information he just gave.
ooc: Jay that was Maikill suggesting names, I personally am not interested in them or do I expect the group to go that way. Just playing that he got an idea in his head and now that is all he can think of.
Valla AC:16/16/12 HP:6/6 Friday November 20th, 2009 10:10:52 PM
Valla rises in the morning, feeling very refreshed and ready to hit the books! He studies his spell book, mentally prepares spells* and does a few routine exercises before he heads down stairs with the rest of the group for a nice breakfast, sasuage and eggs. When Lou and Jae begin talking about the "Brain Sucker" Valla's attention is drawn very quickly.
Alot is going on, and most of it has something to do with the creature, we think, Maikill saw in Pigs Alley... Maybe we've fell into our next job opportunity?
Valla looks to Xeron and Bosk, Maybe you two should talk to Lou? Figure out what he knows about this monster, and what he would plan to do about it. Me and my spells have a bit of scribing to do today. I suggest what ever we plan to do, plan it for tommorow, I don't want to be low on spells for the day and having scrolls handy as well will be more than helpful, it may save our lives. Valla stands and begins to walk back to the room, but then turns around,
Wait, Give me a few hours, and I'll go shopping with you Maikill, I've a few things I'd like to pick up myself. If Im able to find them at least. A few foe hendering items are in much need indeed...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vallas Spells for today, o lvl Dazex2 Read Magic Resistance* Flare
lvl 1 Shield* Mage Armor* Color Sprayx2
Valla will scribe 3 spells on 1 scroll.
Shield: 1x2x25= 50gp; 2xp; 25gp Mage Armor: 1x2x25= 50gp; 2xp; 25gp Resistance: 0x2x25=0gp(50gp); 0xp(2xp); 0gp (25gp)- A bit confused, using the formula it should be 0, but I didn't quite think that was right, although should it really be the same as a 1st level spell?
This would equal 150gp (225gp) and 4xp (6xp) for all 3 spells. I assume it would take 1/4 day to do this?
Also, I never did get conformation on Valla's gp recieved.... I need to know to update my CS. I got 21gp from Grendel, XXX from Penn, and spent 1/4 on the rooms price, correct?
The cost for you to scribe the spells is 75gp and 6xp. It takes 8 hours regardless of 1 spell or 3.
Everyone except Beri received 1000gp from Penn. Room cost was 10gp per person. There is also the 1000gp from the ransom that has yet to be split up. -- DM Jim
Jae -- DM JIM Friday November 20th, 2009 10:36:23 PM "Huh, what? Who are you? Why are you following me?! Don't come any closer or I'll, I'll, scream! Stay away!" Jae runs away from Beri, his eyes furtively seeking escape, looking for monsters where there are none.
Lou the Innkeeper -- DM JIM Friday November 20th, 2009 10:39:12 PM
Lou looked confused at Maikill's ramblings, not sure what the half-orc was going on about. Taking an extra share of the sausage, Xeron found himself without.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:7/7 d20+7=9 ; Friday November 20th, 2009 11:07:48 PM
Seeing how paranoid Jae is, Beriothian decides to keep his distance. That said, as long as his breakfast is getting cold he is at least going to make one attempt to get some information. He shouts toward the man as he runs away.
I just thought you might want someone to kill that monster for you. Look and the wounds healing on my head! He attacked me once, but had to flee because I found his weakness. Don't worry, I am sure it won't be your brains he goes after next.
Beriothian immediately goes back inside and sits down to finish his breakfast. Even for such a simple bluff he probably came off as just another random lunatic screaming in the streets of Muttown. But if the bluff did hit a chord with him Beri is confident Jae will return to the inn to talk.

Jae -- DM JIM d20+2=10 ; Friday November 20th, 2009 11:32:51 PM
Jae's step doesn't falter once as he runs back to his shop/home.
Sanji (Eric) AC: 18/15/13 HP: 8 Saturday November 21st, 2009 11:17:05 AM
Sanji enjoys her breakfast and listens to the different ideas for a group name. Already everyone seems to be treating each other better that in previous days. As Jae runs in and rambles on about the beast, Sanji can't help but think of another job opportunity.
I agree, this is a perfect job opportunity for us. But, we do need a little more information. As she says this, Beriothian goes out the door after Jae. When he returns and continues eating his breakfast, she guesses that is wasn't a very fruitful trip.
Well, I'd like look around this town a little today. Maybe we could find someone who isn't scared out of their mind to give us a little more information about this creature that eats peoples brains. If not, then we can still look for other work. Sanji stands and arches her back to get out some of the remaining muscle kinks from a long nights sleep.
So, does anyone feel like coming along?
Maikill HP 28/28, AC15 Saturday November 21st, 2009 11:30:19 AM "I go shop, need rings for Grendel. Valla say he come too. We wait for him, go at lunch time."
Maikill passes the time sharpening his axe and dagger and sewing up the tears in his leather armor.
When Valla is ready, he goes with them to find the rings for Grendel and a chain shirt for himself is possible.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:7/7 Saturday November 21st, 2009 12:07:47 PM "Mind if I tag along? I would like to explore the city a little, hopefully also find out a little bit more about our monster."
Beri finishes his breakfast, then spends a couple hours working on dexterity exercises.
Bosk (James) AC: 14/10/10 HP 9 of 14 Spells d20=17 ; Saturday November 21st, 2009 12:41:30 PM
Noticing that Xeron wasn't enjoying any of the mystery sausage, Bosk offers him half of his. Lets all plan to meet down here in a bit, and head out together. I just want to aske Lou a couple questions. Besides, I don't like the idea of anyone heading out alone just yet.
Slowly the cleric stands up to his full height, and casually walks over to Lou. Placing the groups reference from Penn face up on the counter, the Taur begins to speak in a strong, boastfull voice. I couldn't help but over hear your conversation with Jae. My companions and I are looking for work and are experienced at handeling these sorts of situations, and it just so happens that we are familiar with this creature. We recently hired the elf you see with our party because he is one of the only two people to ever survive an attack by that creature, and has valuable knowledge for defeating him. The other would be our half orc friend over there, but he is a more physical creature if you get me meaning. He couldn't tell us much, but I would sooner take on the creature hand to hand than face Maikill in battle. If you are looking to hire a group to handel this situation, let us know.
If asked why we haven't killed the beast already, Bosk will respond: When you are good at doing something, you don't do it for free.

Valla AC:16/16/12 HP:6/6 d20+1=7 ; Saturday November 21st, 2009 6:25:37 PM
Valla spends the eight hours in the room, writing his scrolls; the energy toll isn't as much as it would normally be, but the elf is still a bit drained. He ponders the brain-eater a bit, and then returns to the rest of the group, in the inn's "Lobby".
Ready to go shopping? Valla says in as cheerful a voice as he can muster.
Valla will go shopping for 3 tangle foot bags, 2 flasks of Acid, and various spell components for his spells; also asking and willing to bribe up to 20gp for information on the "Brain Sucker".
OOC:Is there any 'special' components needed for his current array of spells? I looked over them and didn't think so myself, but of course its up to you Jim.

Before the others leave she suggests that they might want to check the old Ironband territory and see if we want to claim that area as our own. Sure beats paying 10gp/day for staying at the Inn.
Grendel is going to spend 8 hours scribing a scroll in the safety of her room at the Inn. She scribes both 1st level arcane spells and spontaneously scribes Cure Light Wounds instead of command.
Scroll of: Charm Person, Enlarge Person & Cure Light Wounds. All CL: 1st. Cost: 37.5gp & 3xp.
A Day of Rest -- DM JIM d6=4 Monday November 23rd, 2009 12:40:29 PM
Cutting a swath through thick-dewed grass, I set out. -- Kifu, 1898
After a long day of scribing and shopping for essentials, the group reconvenes back at the Cold Comfort Inn. No problems were had in procuring the needed items and no interruptions were incurred whilst the wizards in the group scribed their scrolls.
The Ironband camp, when investigated, was already stripped of all the tents and whatnot--many a footprint covered the ground, so news of the groups demise spread quickly and looters came for the free items.
As night began to fall, the group learned that the last victim of the braineater was a man by the name of Black Harris. Lou the innkeeper didn't seem very moved by the loss of Harris, perhaps even thought the man deserved it--Black Harris was not in fact black, the term "Black" referred to his constant mood, his arrogant righteousness and unswerving ability to remain biased in any situation even when the facts were clearly stated to the opposite. One thing his death, and the others, did bring was a reward--5000gp for the capture or death of the Brain-eater.
Grendel (Jay) AC:15/10/15 HP 13/13 Monday November 23rd, 2009 1:57:28 PM
As the group gathers around a table at the Cold Comfort Inn, Grendel gathers her thoughts aloud. "What do we know about the brain eater? It eats brains. So far it has targeted merchants and it seems as though it kills one each night... a bit more than a stray hungry monster... it's either very hungry and likes merchants or is a tool, being targeted at the merchants. It has mental abilities, as it sent Maikill into a bout of temporary insanity. It also likes to grapple with tentacles as Berothian's experience shows. It seems to do sloppy work an leave loose ends, maybe we should reward any of the poor folk here who might have seen something useful about it?"
When Maikill brings her the 2 platinum rings, she thanks him and hands him 100 gp.
Valla AC:16/16/12 HP:6/6 d20+1=18 ; Monday November 23rd, 2009 4:06:30 PM
Valla buys his items and spell components he needs, after spending the majority of the day scribing a multiple spell scroll. After returning from shopping and figureing out that the Iron Bands camp has been looted and basicly destroyed, he sets down around the table with the rest of the group, feeling as though he's accomplished nearly nothing this day... At the news of the recently murdered merchant and the reward for the Brain Eater, he brightens up a slight bit.
So, we basicly know exactly what everyone else knows. Nothing... We can assume the creature Maikill saw was the Brain Eater but we don't know for sure. If Lou doesn't have any more information for us, who could we ask? I know no one in this forsaken place, and Im sure most people arn't going to help us for free, if at all. The elf is obviously frustrated with this situation, because he has no clue where to start the search.
Xeron, Sanji. Your both locals, you think it would be possible to get a list or a running tab on the names of most merchants in MudTown? After awaiting a reply, Valla moves to talk to Lou.
Walking up to the Innkeeper, Valla lays five gold piecies on the counter, and covers them with his hand, hiding them from Lou at the moment. Mister Lou; could I bother you for a minute? See, Me and my friends here have an intrest in catching your Brain Eater; but alas, we need a bit of a starting point. Could you, by chance, offer some names of the more popular merchants in Mud Town? Maybe ones who are due to enter the city soon? Also, do you know what happend to the previous murdered merchants belongings? After the brain eating, what happens to their stuff? Does it come up missing? Does it set around and be looted? Do the higher powers in Hook City itself take claim? This information would be nice to have, and would of course earn you a small piece of our grand pie... With that Valla lifts his hand, showing the five gold piecies.

Lou continues to wipe down the bar as Valla asks his questions, and when the scar-faced elf is finished, Lou replies with a smile, "You sure have a lot of questions! Good! Well, anyone who has a tavern is pretty popular, but there are too many merchants to name off the top of my head. As to who's coming into town, no idea, I try to keep out of other people's business. Whatever happened to the other deceased's goods? No idea either, why don't you go to their places and ask them, they could definitely give you a better answer than I." Lou gives the names and locations of all three dead merchants in exchange for the five gold pieces:

2nd victim: Felton Gros Wine merchant; located SW part of town.
1st victim: Mac MacGuiness Curiosities and Oddities Shop; located NW part of town.
Maikill HP 28/28, AC16 Monday November 23rd, 2009 6:49:48 PM
Maikill urgently whispers to his group around the table.
"Lot of gold, we kill brain eater. We know more than others, others only see it at night. I see it in day. We know where look in daytime. We go to Pig Alley and kill it. I not afraid anymore, you go with me."
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:7/7 Monday November 23rd, 2009 7:51:14 PM
Beri responds to the group.
You need to keep in mind that I was attacked, but I am not a merchant. I was also attacked in daylight in the back alley. One attack a day could simply mean that he gets hungry once a day. We also shouldn't take lightly any magical abilities it may have, after all the monster did manage to wander the city undetected in the daylight and escape without being seen.
Bosk (James) AC: 14/10/10 HP 17 of 17 Spells d8=4 ; Monday November 23rd, 2009 8:12:40 PM
Feeling the weight of the gold pressing into his body, the minotaur cleric dreams about what he will spend it on. A masterwork weapon would be nice, making it easier to take down our enemies. However, some stronger armor might be a better investment. I would have died quite a few times this week if it we not for my new comrades. The problem is that either of these will delay my joining the Adventure League. I do not know of a more honorable organization and would love to wear their badge...it might also help us to get some more information about what is going on around here.
Hearing the urgency in the half-orc's voice, Bosk replies Keep it down Maikill, we don't want anyone to hear you and kill the creature before we can find it. We'll probably go in the morning, after everyone has had a chance to regain all their health and spells. After what happened to you, I think it has a few tricks up its sleeve.
I think everyone is now healed, but if not I rolled a d8=4 for CLW for who ever needs it. Otherwise disregard the roll.

Grendel leans over the table and quietly suggests, "Look, judging by the past kills it looks like this thing is making a slow circuit around the perimeter of Mud Town. I say we split into 2 groups. One group goes to the north east part of town this evening while the other heads out now to gather information from those who were already victimized."
If this plan is agreed, Grendel offers the following groupings: "Sanji, Xeron and Berothian seem like the best to ask questions and gather some info. Two are locals and Berothian actually survived the encounter. Bosk, Valla and myself can get some rest to replenish our spells while Maikill guards us, then we can head out into the evening to the North-East part of Mud Town to see if we can't keep this thing from eating another merchant's brain."

More on Steelgrass armor -- DM JIM Tuesday November 24th, 2009 4:16:52 PM
Okay, so I checked out the map for the Sargrass plains, and it looks like Hook City (called Skyhook city [#3 on map] is on the most northern and center of the Sargrass plains. Mudtown is on the North side of the river and the Sargrass Plains on the South. Getting to the plains in this case is not hard to achieve, 1gp to get ferried across, but finding the Manfri who make the armor, and traveling through the 10-30' high grasses, is an adventure in of itself, since there is no one spot where they exist and they're smaller than halflings so the tall plains grasses hide them well. Anyways, thought I'd get that out there. The map can be found HERE
Bosk (James) AC: 19/11/18 HP 17 of 17 Spells d8=1 ; d8=4 ; Tuesday November 24th, 2009 4:58:06 PM
Thanks. I found alot of that information on my own reading through the wiki, however I have been unable to find anything regaurding cost. Do you know what the price difference would be for this material? Although this may not happen right away, I would like to be prepared incase we meet a useful connection or ever venture out that way.
***There is no price for the armor because it cannot be bought. -- DM JIM
Just an FYI, Bosk typically spends his time in prayer to regain his spells at dawn (6:00)
As the group discusses their plans for the evening, Bosk sits down and polishes his new armor shmowhat oblivious to his suroundings. It is not until Beri mentions Xeron's face that the cleric notices the burn. Quickly standing up, Bosk quickly heals the rogue to the best of his abillities. Just as he is about to inquire into what happened, and the groups 1000gp, Xeron snaps at Beri. "None of your business" Making a note to bring the topic up again at a later time, the blond cleric suggests the group get another nights rest before hunting the creature. If the group wishes to look for information, he will go with the group is Maikill stays to gaurd those at the inn just so long as they return to the inn by sunrise for his daily meditation.
I couldn't remember if I could reroll a 1 for CLW. 4 if I can. If I can not I will also use my last two CMW for a total of +3hp
**Yes you can always reroll a 1 for a heal. BTW, please refer to the cure minor wounds as CMiW, since CMW usually refers to cure moderate wounds. -- Dm JIM
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:7/7 Tuesday November 24th, 2009 7:42:34 PM I think that when we go it would be smarter to all go together when we search for this thing. This is obviously a very strong creature we are looking for, and we will probably need all of us if we want to take this thing down. Sending a group out now to gather information is probably still smart, though we should probably plan a route that avoids secluded alleys as much as possible. Even if the monster isn't likely to be out this time of day, that's it's best to avoid locations like that in this town
Valla AC:16/16/12 HP:6/6 Tuesday November 24th, 2009 8:15:27 PM
Valla thanks Lou for the information and heads back to the groups table, relaying all info gathered.
Well, its at least new info, if not a better starting position. I say us mages stay here, replinish our spells, while the other half the party go out for a bit more info tonight. Meet back here around 8am, and set out to find this Brain Eater. Valla sets in a chair and begins switching his gaze from his own scarred arm to Xeron's burnt face,
Pointing to his own face, he says to Xeron, What ever happened friend, I'd suggest you get that healed properly, if not you'll end up looking like me.
Sanji (Eric) AC: 18/15/13 HP: 8 Tuesday November 24th, 2009 8:50:25 PM
Sanji plants one foot on a chair and rests her arms on her raised knee. I'm ready to head out now and see what we can figure out. By all means stay here and get your spells back. We all know how handy those things are. I'm not going to need to do any more shopping for a while so I'll have no trouble focusing on the task at hand. Sanji tilts her head and gives a wink to Xeron and then a smile to Beriothian.
What do you say boys. Shall we see if we can get lucky and find out something useful from the friends of the recently deceased? She gives them both a playful squeeze on the shoulder and gives a encouraging wave as she walks toward the door.
I promise I'll do my best to not get into any fights or scuffles while I'm out. That's why you two have to come along... To defend my honor if something goes wrong. The crooked smile returns as Sanji leans up against the door jam waiting to see if the other two will respond to her teasing and come along.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:7/7 Tuesday November 24th, 2009 10:21:58 PM
Beriothian leans back in his chair and calls toward Sanji
Well I don't know about Xeron, but I'm always up for an adventure. I think we should make plans before heading out though. After trying to talk to Jae earlier I'm not sure a direct approach to gathering information will be the most fruitful way to proceed. I would like to buy a bottle of wine before leaving that we can give to a friend/relative of the most recent victim. They may be more willing to spend a few minute talking to someone offering their condolences than to a group of mercenaries asking questions. Also, wine has the added benefit of loosening ones lips.

If you stay close it will keep you from falling in battle. It's a loaner, I might need to give the boon to another later on... but, for now you fit the mold for our champion." With a quick invocation and a touch to his shoulder she shares a powerful boon with Maikill.
========================== OOC: Grendel will take a standard action to cast "Shield Other" on Maikill. This boon lasts for 1 hour and Grendel will take a standard action each hour to renew it. The benefits are +1 to AC and all saves, all damage taken by the target is evenly split between the caster and the target. The platinum ring is a focus for the spell, 2 of them are required... one for the caster and one for the target.
Maikill HP 28/28, AC16 Wednesday November 25th, 2009 9:49:05 AM
Maikill's jaw drops as Grendel hands him the ring. Slowly, he slips it on his finger.
"Maikill try hard, fight good. I no champion. Three time yesterday I fall in battle, enemy too strong, better fighter. I need learn fight better. New metal shirt help, now ring help. I try be champion, but that is lot to ask. I try best."
Maikill is ready to go out and collect information, he dons his new chain mail shirt and lifts his axe.
ooc: So I am sure Maikill doesn't realize that Grendel will take damage, don't know how that will go when he finds out.

This stupid joke force a smile on the rogue face and he finally gets up "No need for healing. Rest will take care of it. Plus the cleric is writing scrolls and is out of spell. Anyway, if anything happens, I'll run away. "
He stands there, waiting for Sanji to get moving. Back to the streets of Mudtown. Back to where his dirty soul belong. Back home.

The blond cleric stares at Xeron in confusion, why was he acting this way. Xeron, it is really no trouble. Grendle healed Maikill, so I still have three spells left for tonight. Thats more than enough to heal you. Besides, after the way you took care of those bouncers I want to make sure you are able to watch my back if I need it. The cleric gives Xeron a quick smile. I won't go down so easy next time, this armor will see to that.

Valla smiles at the Rogues joke, Nice one, Well I guess lets go; but we cannot be out all night, I need my rest and time to study in the morning; but the information we find out tonight could help out massivly. A bottle of wine is probably the best route to take when talking to the merchants loved ones. Valla recites the locations and names of the merchants; I say we start in the southeastern part of town, and circle our way back here; See who knows what of Mr. Black Harris; the general goods merchant....
Valla stamps his staff on the ground a few good times, and heads for the door, after Sanji and Xeron; You two keep your eyes open, your the locals of the group here; lead the way.
The Case of the Missing Brains -- DM JIM d6=5 ; Wednesday November 25th, 2009 5:46:06 PM
Deciding to investigate the backgrounds of the three victims, the group makes way to the first victims place, then the second and then lastly the third--this takes most of the night and luckily nothing happens to the group as it makes it way across the lawless town.
At the first place, the group finds that the wife of the man who was killed, Mac MacGuiness, is in charge now. She is a thin woman with a kind face and disposition.
At the second place, the group finds two of Felton Gros' sons trying to manage the business. They are not nice, rather arrogant in fact and don't take kind to questions.
At the last place, Black Harris' general merchandise store, the group finds it closed and locked up--mostly like by Harris himself just before he wass killed. If no one comes forward to claim the business, there is every expectation that it will be looted within a day or two. If you wish to ask any questions at any of the three locations, please make a diplomacy OR Intimidate roll for EACH LOCATION. If the group makes both(by seperate characters), then the last roll will count, invalidating anyone elses roll. I would suggest you choose one person to make the Diplomacy or Intimidate roll, then everyone else make a DC10 Aid Another roll
If you want to talk to the neighbors, squatters, etc that are around each location, then please make a Gather Info roll. I would suggest the same procedure above with the Aid Another roll.
I will be able to post everyday, so if you have questions, please ask. And if your characters notice a small fat man with an impeccable mustache by the name of Hercule, leave him alone :)

The Case of the Missing Brains -- DM JIM d20+2=6 ; d20+2=4 ; Thursday November 26th, 2009 8:59:57 PM
HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!
Poor widow MacGuiness, she lost her husband of thirty years just a few days ago and now a group of ruffians are questioning her at dagger point. "Please, please don't hurt me, I'll tell you whatever you want to know," she replies, visibly shaking, as Beri intimidates her into speaking--Xeron close behind playing with his dagger in a menacing manner. (you guys really need to read my posts better).
Gathering information from those around the area, they don't know anything in particular, just that Old Mac dealt with some strange items--most think it was just a junk shop.
Just as willing to help at the point of a dagger, the Felton Bros' willing give any information to the group, they just need to ask.
Gathering information in the area, it's learned that Felton Sr. had a fine appreciation for wine, tobacco and art.
At Black Harris', there is no one to talk too in the shop as it is closed and locked. Three days is the customary time period to give a merchant if he dies or ends up missing, before it's fair game.
Gathering information around the area, the group finds out what Lou the innkeeper said was true. Black Harris wasn't well liked and liked to throw his weight around. The group also finds out that Felton Sr. had visited the store about a week ago, for what reason, it's unknown, perhaps to buy some general goods, etc... If you have questions of Widow MacGuiness or the Felton Bros., please ask.
Xeron AC AC15 HP 7/7 Friday November 27th, 2009 11:35:44 AM
The rush of seeing the poor widow or the brothers tremble in front of the intimidating group quickly evaporates for Xeron. The rogue quickly feels like an evil bully. "I thought being good mean we did not do thing like that."
The rogue will ask the following questions to both groups:
a) Where was the victim body found? b) Was the merchant on his way or back from meeting someone? c) Has the merchant started recently to trade new ware or with a new partner? d) Did the merchant manners changes over the past couple of weeks? e) Did anyone threaten the merchant recently? f) Did the merchant do business with the other two deceased? g) How was the business going? h) Who will benefit the most from the merchant death?
================================================================================= I have the character sheet done and need the update the google doc and hopefully publish it properly the first time. DM: Can you confirm the gold: 884 (first battle) - 100 (Karyn new life gift) + 1000 (Penn) + 125 (Gordo 1000) = 1,909? I've asked Bosk to handle it first, then I'll confirm his post
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:7/7 Friday November 27th, 2009 11:47:29 AM
Beriothian looks in the door and sees a widow instead of Jae. He immediately relaxes his pose upon and regrets the choice. Next time instead of planning in advance we may want knock on the door and just wing it after we see who we answers.
ooc: is that what you had intended for us to do, go to each location and roll AFTER you describe the scene? This is what was posted: At the first place, the group finds that the wife of the man who was killed, Mac MacGuiness, is in charge now. She is a thin woman with a kind face and disposition.

Xeron AC AC16 HP 13/13 Friday November 27th, 2009 12:51:43 PM
OOC: 289/8 = 36 for 7 of us and 38 from Sanji (For a crooked smile). For the 1000 from Gordo, Xeron will divide in 8 and give 125 to all. Xeron Gold: 1,484 + 36 = 1,520.

Answers to the various questions so far:
a) Where was the victim body found? Nearby alleyway in both cases
b) Was the merchant on his way or back from meeting someone? After closing up shop
c) Has the merchant started recently to trade new ware or with a new partner? Unknown
d) Did the merchant manners changes over the past couple of weeks? No
e) Did anyone threaten the merchant recently? Unknown
f) Did the merchant do business with the other two deceased? Checking their records, you find Old Mac sold a puzzle box to Felton Sr., who then gave it to Black Harris to sell on commission.
g) How was the business going? fine
h) Who will benefit the most from the merchant death? they both don't know what to say, but hazard a guess that it is they who would benefit the most.

Bosk (James) AC: 19/11/18 HP 17 of 17 Spells Friday November 27th, 2009 10:09:47 PM
This took a while...
Valla, you are supposed to have a chart on your character sheet that keeps track of your gold earned and gold spent. Your only has a section that says Currency-1541gp 20sp 11cp
What the group has earned is 10/12/09 1/8 of 289 Gold gotten from Iron Band 36g/1s/2c 10/26/09 1/8 of money from selling Iron Band Loot 884g/16s/11c (originally 775gp) 11/16/09 Payment from Penn 1000gp 11/17/09 Grendle pays 21gp debt to 5 players left 21 gp
I do not have a guide with me to look up the cost of what your purchases have been. Also, I am keeping track of group loot, but not what you bought or when you bought it, so I do not know what you started with and what you purchased since. Just what you owe the group, the group owes you, and group loot.
However, on 10/26/09 you received 710gp 14sp 3cp This is because Valla still owed 155 (310*.5=155) for the MW Short Sword
This is where it gets confusing. Everyone received 775gp. You payed 155GP meaning everyone else received an additional 22gp 1sp 4cp.
Plus Grendel bought one helm and the breast plate. Therefore everyone received an additional 110gp 7sp 1cp + 2gp 8sp 6cp
End results for 10/26 were:
Valla 620(sword deducted)+110gp 7sp 1cp + 2gp 8sp 6cp=710gp 14sp 3cp Grendel=privately informs her that she owes the group 105gp when Penn pays them. Maikill 750+22gp 1sp 4cp+110gp 7sp 1cp + 2gp 8sp 6cp=884gp 16sp 11cp Xeron 750+22gp 1sp 4cp+110gp 7sp 1cp + 2gp 8sp 6cp=884gp 16sp 11cp Bosk 750+22gp 1sp 4cp+110gp 7sp 1cp + 2gp 8sp 6cp=884gp 16sp 11cp Sanji 750+22gp 1sp 4cp+110gp 7sp 1cp + 2gp 8sp 6cp=884gp 16sp 11cp Motley 750+22gp 1sp 4cp+110gp 7sp 1cp + 2gp 8sp 6cp=884gp 16sp 11cp Padre 750+22gp 1sp 4cp+110gp 7sp 1cp + 2gp 8sp 6cp=884gp 16sp 11cp
looks like I made a mistake and shorted everyone but Valla 25gp. Everyone else got 750 instead of 775 initial. my post stated Bosk got it right even if I screwed up :)
I need a drink after this!!!

Click on my name to see my updated character sheet (Not quite complete). The Let me know what you think of the Group Loot section at the very bottom. Does it need to be more specific in regards to what we sold or what a party member has / owes for? Do I need to list who was an active player at the time and got the money, or will that get too cluttered and players should determine it on their own by their starting date?
Looks good, no need to indicate specifics as active, etc..., players should keep their character sheets updated so I can look at the group loot and then see the date on their character sheet to indicate when they received the gold. If there is a discrepancy, the group loot table always takes priority. -- DM Jim

The tall cleric stands in the back, pondering what he might add to the conversation. The puzzle box might connect those men, but Beri didn't mention anything about a puzzle box. What ever is doing this must also be opportunistic as well. Still, that box seems to be too much of a coincidence to ignore. Thank you so much for your help. I apologize if we seem a bit harsh, the thing doing this attacked two of our friends. As you can imagine, we are determined to make sure no one else suffers at the hands of this monster.
After returning to the inn, Bosk will offer to take guard duty the shift before dawn. At dawn, he will meditate for his daily devotion to Gargul. After that is complete, the Cleric will return to bed until morning. (Bosk will sleep in his studded leather armor, and change into his banded mail when he wakes up.)

My CS is also fully updated, and I was off by 20gp in my "Currency" listing; the 10 for the room and the 10 as a gift/Bribe for Lou...
You may not have seen the box, but you werent killed ethier; you were also attacked during the daylight... Maikill happend across this creature by chance, I assume you did as well... I think it hunted the merchants; not you or Maikill. The box is the only lead we have at the moment; unless we wish to figure out who else smokes and drinks in this muddy town; in which case, we should just start interogating people as they reach the town limits, without smoke or drink one would surely lose their mind in the forsaken place...
The grumpy elf then makes his way back to the inn and to his room/bed to get some rest; not wishing to discuss much more this night, since dawn is soon approaching.

The tired elf offers more of his own advice, I say we come back to this shop during the daylight; sure sneaking in at night would probably offer better security but then again, this is a farily lawless town; so I don't think anyone will confront us about looking around a dead merchants shop. Surly Sanji or Xeron can pick the locks, if not our Horned Friend here can just bust the door down, ethier way, we get inside.
