Hungry...so hungry.

"Warning! Warning!" [DM Jerry]
Tuesday March 2nd, 2010 1:54:31 PM

Just as Thar is asking the obvious question about whether the evacuation of the 2nd building is complete, four dwarves come running from a nearby pub. One, evidently their leader yells, "Hey Shorty! We need buckets!

"But my family'sup there, boss! Y'knew Milla was sick with tha'Turtlerots and the kids. The Kids!"

The older dwarf slaps Shorty on the cheek and yells, "Then get some buckets! Over there! Come on!"

The older dwarf runs smack into Wynum and Zepher and falls on his rump. "Sorry sir...Oh, its you guys! We got family up there. That workshop there is ours. We're at your service."

Then without waiting for instructions, he starts yelling again. "Buckets over there! Get that horse trough too. Four of us can manage it. Growllin get over there to the pub and roust some more help! Then get your buns back here!"

Thar and Ruby, obviously spots the dwarves getting buckets and looks around for more to help him with an incursion to go inside. He shortly sees patrons from the nearby pub running out to gawk at the fire.

Edmund's Water Elemental appears and charges forward into the fire and makes a big difference. Immediately, afterwords, a shrill alarm goes off all over the district as magic mouths form on every Town Crier Pulpit announcing a district emergency.

"Warning! Warning! Summoned creature in district! Head indoors and remain there until further notice! Warning! Warning!"

---------------

Meanwhile, our two new lovers are deep in the pool, enjoying the ability to breathe the water. Suddenly there is a voice in the water. It is calm and assured, but also commanding. "Come! You are needed, Master Arm. Race home! Race home!"

As Arm emerges, he sees an old druid there pointing at a tree. "Into the tree sir. It will guide you."

--------------------------

Greetings folks. Robert, as you may know is having a very rough time with real life right now and I'd volunteered to give him a break for about a month or so. He finally called on me so I'll be running things for probably most of March.

If I'm missing a nuance or story thread here and there, please email me and let me know what you're wanting to happen. I'll do my best to continue things with the standards you're used to under DM Robert.

I understand we have a new player. Please email me at gericko@gmail.com and let me have a copy of character sheet please. I plan on entering you into the game asap.

Thar
Tuesday March 2nd, 2010 2:09:56 PM

(OOC - Thanks for stepping in and helping out Jerry ;-))) )

Since it seems that the dwarves are getting buckets to help out with the fire, Thar says to Ruby, "Well my love, it sounds like we're got a job to do... Let's go see if we can find that family before they're incinerated with the rest of the building..."

He asks the dwarves where the family lived in the building, so they know where to look.

Finally, knowing that Ruby is the center of his world, he casts Resist Energy (Fire) upon her, boosting up her resistance to fire. He'd rather take the damage than see her injured...
Giving her a brief kiss, he goes inside with her (assuming she follows)

Spells Cast/In Progress
1. Resist Energy (Fire) - 60 mins of protection...

Revi AC21/13T/21FF HP 90/90
Tuesday March 2nd, 2010 2:38:21 PM

Brief moments of lucidity came to Revi's mind as she continued to pray, "I wonder what the rest are doing...damn that Edmund...so hungry."

ooc: Heya Jerry! My character, Revi, is currently away from the group out near the forest on the safe road, praying for her wolf animal companion to come back. She has until the next morning before she's done and rejoin the group, so another 8-10 hours gametime or so.

Edmund
Tuesday March 2nd, 2010 6:48:14 PM

((Hey Jerry! Thanks for helping us out and giving Robert some time off to sort things. Hopefully we'll avoid making your DMing too difficult!))

Initially pleased at the effect the Water Elemental is having, Edmund winces at the eventual cry of alarm. Resisting the urge to put his head in his hands, he does his best to ignore the alarm, focusing instead on casting Sleet Storm where it will have the most effect given sleet penetration and fire intensity.

"All on an empty stomach," he laments in his mind. "Quite unfair, really. And I'm running out of fire-fighting tricks, too. What next?

Wynum
Tuesday March 2nd, 2010 8:41:20 PM

Wynum hesitates for some time, as he somehow remembers having an issue with dwarves, but can't quite remember. This gives enough time for the couple to go into the house.
"No wait!" he shouts, following, "I'll go in. I have an.... holocaust cloak." He unclasps his majestic embroided cloak, and hands it over to the couple. "I can't go in that house, it's too small. Throw the dwarves out of the windows and I'll catch them. It can't fail."

The centaur trots around the house, locating the available exits and windiws, standing watch for anybody trying to exit.

{Hello Jerry! Btw Wynum's cloak is in fact merely a cloak of protection which he bought while drunk as a horse.}

Ruby
Tuesday March 2nd, 2010 9:07:24 PM

Ruby returns the kiss and charges into the building without much more thought. Since Thar has already protected her she will leave him with the cloak or grab it on the run. "Thanks Wynum." She dances across the floor with lithe grace to avoid whatever she can of the fire. Bolstered by magic and the knowledge that there are children in danger she plows on with a light laugh. This was so much easier than a certain hall with fireballs that she remembers though that also brings painful memories as well.

Zephyr
Wednesday March 3rd, 2010 5:08:04 AM

Hearing that there are children still in the house, Zephyr moves into the house with the woman Ruby. "More hands will get the kids out faster!" She shouts, her arm covering her face and mouth as she entered the house, looking and listening for the children.

Arm[HP 44/44 AC 24]
Thursday March 4th, 2010 9:31:02 AM

Arm nods at the druid and quickly dresses. Apologizing to Marie, he says, "It seems my sevices are needed. I can escort you back to town, but if you wish to stay here for a while, will you be ok going back by yourself?".

It's Kinda Weak [DM Jerry]
Thursday March 4th, 2010 2:25:05 PM

Shorty looks furtively at Thar. He is battling with the idea of letting someone else rescue his family. He finally decides against it, sets the buckets down and says, "I'm coming with you!"

Shorty looks to Wynum as if having a very hard time cooperating with a Centaur. He finally nods to Wynum and yells, "Over to the left side. There's a general store across the street that carries nets if that will help!"

He then quickly follows Ruby and Thar into the building. "That way! Up the stairs to the left. Watch that 4th stair. It's kinda weak. Zephyr follows as well.

Shorty points up a rickety staircase with the ceiling above totally on fire and possibly about ready to collapse. Of course, about 5' from the top it does collapse.

Your choice:
Reflex save of 20 to try and jump up the rest of the way. No damage.
Reflex save of 10 to try and pole vault over to the side, over the banister to the 1st floor taking 1d6 damage.
Reflex save of 15 to avoid the falling ceiling by jumping or rolling back down the stairs. 1d4 damage.

Failure is 4d8dmg crushing and 2d8 damage fire.

----------------

Meanwhile, Edmund is casting another spell. The crowd oooohs and aahhhs as he casts. Then thunder cracks the sky and sleet bears down on the two buildings. From the crowd comes sparse clapping and a few cheers.

-----------------

Across town, Marie smiles warmly at Arm and bravely holds her face high. "I will stay here. Go help your friends." She smiles and backs to stand by the druid. The glowing portal in the tree awaits.

-----------------

5000' lower and some distance away on the 2nd Plateau, Revi continues to pray for her companion.

A soft voice whispers in her ear. "Perhaps I can expedite dear."

An ancient elderly woman approaches. "Do not be afraid." Then she transforms into an ancient grey wolf and facing into the forest takes a deep breath and howls. The sound echoes through the trees, lonely and full of sadness. After a few seconds, one wolf answers back. Then another. Then several. The forest fills with the sound of lupine song.

Sorry I missed the post yesterday. First, I have to get into the habit again. I left it until I got home from school and that left me vulnerable when my modem decided to go on the fritz. Again, my apologies.

Thar  d20+13=23 ;
Thursday March 4th, 2010 4:27:07 PM

Knowing that there is still a family in danger, Thar decides to risk it and make it the rest of the way. Taking a long leap (Reflex = 23), he barely manages to make it by the skin of his back... When he arrives, he turns and if anyone else tries to make it the rest of the way, he'll kneel down, anchor himself and reach out his arms for whomever wants to try (trying to give an aid bonus on this one if possible...). His main fear is that his beloved fiancee not make the jump and somehow be injured...

Wynum
Thursday March 4th, 2010 7:19:32 PM

"Hardly can hold a net by myself", reasons the centaur, as he barely acknowledge the dwarf's advice. Grumpy for no clear reason, he still position himself underneat the most obvious window of the burning house.

Ruby  d20+11=21 ;
Thursday March 4th, 2010 10:09:33 PM

Ruby takes the running leap and lands just barely on the other side and turns to see if anyone else needs help. She skips further away to get away from the edge slightly as they both get across as well. Continueing up the stairs she is quick to try and get to those that need their help. With a shake of her head she wishes that she had grabbed some rope as well.

Edmund
Friday March 5th, 2010 12:03:37 AM

Edmund has used up both of his applicable spells, and puzzles over what to do next.

"Should have cast Message on everyone first," he grumbles to himself. "Or Haste, or... something!"

Idly, he wonders how his Water Elemental is coming on, given the intention he had for it to focus on addressing the conflagration.

"I wonder if everyone else is all right..." he thinks to himself as he watches the result of the Sleet Storm.

Arm[HP 44/44 AC 24]
Friday March 5th, 2010 9:21:10 AM

Arm smiles and kisses Marie warmly, adding "Stay safe, dear.". He then adjusts his belt around him and enters the portal, not knowing what awaits him on the other side.

Be Brave [DM Jerry]  d20+6=7 ;
Friday March 5th, 2010 10:37:59 AM

Thar, Zephyr, and Ruby, like the professionals they are, leap as a team up and forward to the top of the stairs landing in a crouched position.

To Shorty, it appears as if the three heroes were one, moving exactly together. It amazes him that they can synchronize such an unexpected thing. He jumps afterward, his family driving him onward. He fails utterly fumbling his attempt, however. The roof of fire lands on him squarely and the stairs collapse upon him burying him in the flames and now dust that rises from the mess.

He screams as he falls, "Get THEM!" Then he is silent.

Wynum hears the crash as does Edmund. The dwarves pause for a second before starting to move the water even faster. They get the doorway clear of flames and someone comes forward with some boards to reinforce it. The first bucket comes forward and splashes its load on the pile of ceiling and wood that used to be the stairs.

Edmund concentrates on his water elemental again and sees that it is around the back of the building working on the badk wall which is burning very hotly trying to jump to the building across the alley.

----------------

Meanwhile in the Druid Quarter, the druid and Marie are encouraging Arm forward into the tree.

-----------------

And finally, hours away on the Safe Road of the 2nd plateau, the wolves continue to howl in the forest. Dozens clamor for attention, but one emerges triumphant. A lower howl that asserts itself into the mix and then slowly becomes dominant. He directs the chorus of wolves silencing one after another with its voice until it alone responds.

A few moments later, the beautiful creature emerges from the woods and steps forward. He bows to the shapeshifter lowering his head for a few seconds. Then it rises and moves to stand in the companion position beside Reva. It nuzzles her once then stands still.

"Now to get you to your comrades."

The wolf shifts back into human form and casts a spell creating an opening in a tree.

When done she says, "Enter the tree and join your companions. The heavens point toward something...horrible. And your friends are the ones at the center of the tumult. Go to them. Be brave."

I'll be introducing our new player as soon as I get the info I need from Robert (the player, not the DM.) ::grin::

I beat a couple of you to the post today. Sorry if I was too early. Gonna be a busy day so I needed to get it done.

Friday March 5th, 2010 12:22:22 PM

Hearing the dwarf's call inside, Wynum starts to reason in his own way, "Get them? What if it's a trap? A dwarf trap? To kill elves!", then shouting from below the window: "Thar! Ruby! Get out! I'm here! It's a trap!" and gestures rather erratically to Edmund, regardless of his current occupation.

Revi's eyes fluttered and took in the sight of the large black wolf next to her. She caressed the beast's muzzle and named him, "Arashi, your name shall be Arashi." Rising, still completely naked and covered in dried mud, Revi bowed to the old woman and spoke in druidic, "My thanks." Quickly putting on her breechcloth and halter top, then gathering her equipment, she walked into the magical portal with her wolf companion.

Edmund
Sunday March 7th, 2010 12:33:23 PM

Edmund hurries over to Wynum.

"It's a trap!?" exclaims incredulously. "Ridiculous! At any rate, trap or no, help is needed--whether for our friends or those innocently caught up in this calamity. You can probably carry a few down, or pull people out if needed, so . . ."

With that, Edmund casts a quick and familiar spell, giving Wynum the ability to Fly. ((If Edmund has time, he will also cast Message on Wynum. I will presume he has time, as each of these actions only takes 6s (1 round) to complete).)

"Now!" the wizard urges. "Go! The house is small enough that Haste is unnecessary. Go in through that window on the second floor. Bust through. I'll send a fog cloud when you let me know you are coming out. It will cool things down, but it won't last long--seconds, perhaps."

"As for myself," the wizard mumbles. "We'll see what else I can do from down here. I have a few more tricks up my sleeve, before . . ."

Edmund appears troubled by something, though he doesn't say what--nor does he indicate that he has any intention of elucidating the matter. Instead, he shouts at Wynum again: "Go!"

((DM Jerry, I have some questions for you!

1) How far is Edmund from a body of water of at least 13 gal.?
2) Generally speaking, how severe is the fire internally in the house? Is this becoming a towering inferno, or just a spreading house fire at this stage? (I'm trying to work out the BTUs I need to overcome.)
3) I am allowed to have more than one Summon Monster spell in effect at a time, right? I'm fairly certain I am, but I just want to make certain.
4) Would you say that cold-producing (or heat-draining, as it were) spells would have an effect upon the fire? i.e. Cone of Cold, which is specifically described as heat-draining.
5) Has the fire penetrated the roof? And if so, how much penetration is there, in general--a rough estimate in square feet would be ideal: i.e. 'there is a hole about 6 foot square.'

Thanks!))

Somewhat wizened by the wizard's admonestations, Wynum springs, or rather, flies, into action. Accustomed to this mode of movement from his previous experiences in the forest, he flies up and scans the inside of the house through every available opening, allthewhile calling for his friends in danger, having somewhat forgotten about the dwarves.

Something Up There [DM Jerry]
Monday March 8th, 2010 2:08:39 PM

Arm arrives on the scene stepping out of a small Woldberry bush in a crouch. He sees the water brigade, the two buildings burning and the sleet falling from the sky. He spots Wynum and Edmund and hears the screams. A gruff dwarf yells at him.

"Hey you! Grab that bucket and get over here!"

--------------------

Revi names her beast and enters her portal. She arrives in the same Woldberry bush just behind Arm finally seeing the emergency. She obviously sees Arm in front of her and the burning buildings.

--------------------

Wynum has his daily paranoia attack announcing that the fallen dwarf is sending them into a trap.

There are two doors upstairs. Left and Right. The fire is heaviest to the left and rear. Zephyr and Thar see this as well as Ruby. The roof above cracks and the strangest thing comes through the opening: fire AND ice. A great hissing sound is heard, but somehow the fire is resisting the sleet being rained down upon it by Edmund is being resisted and even fought? Perhaps Wynum is not that far wrong this time?

Then those upstairs hears the sounds of crying from the left door. Someone bangs on it. "Let us out!" The voice is husky and speaks a rough common with a dwarven accent.

Edmund rebukes Wynum and casts Fly upon him with instructions. He realizes that the water for the buckets is coming from a small pond next to the tavern. It has a tap that fills it. There is definitely 13 gallons left, but won't be if they keep the bucket brigade going. As Edmund examines the roof, what he can see of it from the ground, it appears that the roof is still solid though burning. It is then that he realizes that something up there is competing with his efforts to put out the flame. A huge fireball goes off hitting the rear of the house.

Edmund (HP 54/54, AC 12) Message, Fly  d20+3=6 ; d3=1 ; d20+3=20 ;
Monday March 8th, 2010 7:50:26 PM

Edmund watches the fire with consternation, increasingly aware that something isn't quite right with the way in which it is responding to the sleet and the efforts of his Water Elemental.

"I wish I had a Decanter of Endless Water," he thinks to himself, remembering something he had been looking at in the Catacombs some time ago. He idly wonders whether the Catacombs could be persuaded to loan such a device to the Fire Brigade in the current emergency, and then thinks that perhaps the Mithril Order might even purchase such an item and donate it to the Brigade for the good of the city. However, the continued ineffectuality of the sleet soon returns his mind to the matter at hand.

"What the deuce is wrong with my spell--" he mutters to himself, before his contemplation is interrupted by a sudden glow and the familiar sound of a Fireball spell detonating near the rear of the house. Immediately, Edmund puts the information together.

"Someone is doing this deliberately!" he shouts aloud and into the Message spell--intent that Wynum should know, too. "Someone is casting Fireballs at the house! Constables! Guards! To arms! To arms! This is a work of malice! Even now, a magician strives against us!"

Finally stirred to take more direct action, Edmund casts Fly on himself and sets off at top speed towards what he estimates (based on his knowledge of Fireball spells, the sound of the explosion (Listen=6), and the brightness of the flash (Spot=20)) to be the most likely point of origin. Unfortunately, the hue and cry has made it difficult to hear, but it certainly hasn't affected his sight.

Thank the Forgemaker! [DM Jerry]

Zephyr finds the door jammed--from the heat expanding the wood. Her kick however, shatters the weak door and the bottom half of the door, from just above the handle down, crashes open with a loud crash.

Hot air and smoke blows outward followed by two dwarven children both running for the non-existent stairs who run straignt into Thar. A badly burned female dwarf follows slowly trying to get a breath of air among the smoke.

"Oh, thank the Forgemaker!" The words come out slurred as you realize that her face is moderately burned.

[Fort Save for all at the top of the stairs DC16 to keep from being shaken for 1d4 rounds.]

-------------

Outside, Edmund, suspecting an arson, and a mage at that, Casts fly and races around to the rear of the house. His spot is not the best, but he does see 3 rooftops in the area where one would have a good vantage point of the fire.

Wynum begins to intone her mistrust for dwarves when...

...a tall lean Minotaur in a purple robe and braided beard steps forward to the ledge of the left of the three vantage points.

He bows, smiles a remarkably bright smile at Edmund, then a sneer for Wynum. He then teleports away with a loud popping sound.

Two small fire elementals dart in the direction of the Minotaur, leaving the first building. They also disappear.

Ruby and Arm hear a snicker behind them. A wild sounding tenor voice intones the word, "Marvelous!"

Zephyr points towards the burned woman, spots dancing in front of her eyes and her chest burning from the smoke in her lungs. She scoops up one child to her chest, putting their arms and legs around her neck and waist, and grabs the other child in her free arm. Pivoting, she jumps over the bannister, to plummet to the floor far below, her legs kicking out to hit each turn of the bannister and her free arm grabbing at the charred pieces of wood and quickly letting go, slowing her fall to the floor down below...

Drench it!" she tells it, pointing to the fire in front of them and holding the bucket of water the elemental was summoned from in front of her.

Edmund (HP 54/54, AC 12) Message, Fly
Wednesday March 10th, 2010 12:48:07 PM

Edmund blinks with surprise at the robed Minotaur, and is quite taken aback by its courteous bow to such a degree that he nearly bows in reply--and in mid-air, at that!

"I say!" Edmund exclaims. And then, to reiterate the point, he says again, "I say!"

After a moment of confusion about what to do next, he turns his attention again to the fire, heading down toward the ground near the front of the mansion, intent on ordering his Water Elemental to assist Thar and the others now that the immediate cause of the fire seems to have vanished (literally).

Arm[HP 44/44 AC 24]

Ruby  d20+14=26 ; d20+12=18 ;
Wednesday March 10th, 2010 6:38:10 PM

With the dwarves seemingly taken care off, she glances to the woman and nods her head. "Come one, we need to get out of here." She drops over the side and lands in a roll that helps to cushion her fall. She is back on her feet but does not move as she glances back up to make sure that the woman is following them.

She had noted the voice but took little time to do anything else, not even looking around for the source. Right now she was more worried about not getting fried alive or letting anyone else get that way either.

Wynum [See Invisible]
Wednesday March 10th, 2010 9:47:24 PM

No less flabbergasted than Edmund, Wynum is short on expletives. Subconsciously picking up Ed's exclamation - or maybe it's the message spell - he blurts out.
"I say!" but quickly grumps back:
"I say... we should have kept that wand of teleport lock thing! I told you! Disappearing minotaurs! In league with the dwarves, surely!"

With his magically-enhanced utter lack of efficiency, he rushes to the Minos' previous location and begins searching the surroundings in case s/he merely teleported a short distance away. He also checks whether the ledge the Minotaur was on is accessible by hoof or if it's more likely s/he teleported there.

{OOC: though this isn't specified anywhere on his sheet, Wynum is a male Centaur. He'd rather be confused with a female than a horse, though!}

The Open Door [DM Jerry] [no pun to Evanescence intended]
Thursday March 11th, 2010 2:49:49 PM

Zephyr floats down with the two children landing carefully to avoid the buried dwarf who's feet are sticking out of the pile. The kids are white-faced, not realizing that they were going to float, but they are brave and do not scream.

The dwarven woman nods at him and then grimaces at the pain that causes her. She doesn't wait since her children are already down. She jumps and lands in a squat crying out Then she is pulling at Shorty's feet. "Come on you stupid stubborn dwarf! You lovely handsome stupid dwarf. Come on Zabin Whiteanvil Proudheart! Get your butt in gear!"

"Woman! I toldz ya not to use my first name. Them's fighting words. Now pull. I'ze stuck good and that leg you're tuggin on is broken. Grab the other one!"

Revi, also hears the snicker. Casts And casts Bull's Strength. [She is limited to one spell a round. We're not strictly in rounds, but I'm limiting it to one spell and major action a post anyway.]

Edmund after yelling his derision at the Minotaur returns to the front of the building. There he finds that everyone is rescued except for one almond eyed female at the top of the where the stairs used to be.

Arm jerks around and sees a silk-colored Liontaur darting back into the crowd near the tavern.

[Spot of DC25 to get more information about the Liontaur]

Wynum flies quickly to where the Minotaur disappeared. Floating to the ground is a delicate piece of paper tied to a pretty ribbon. There is writing on it.

The rooftop is not especially Minotaur Friendly, but there is a doorway leading into the building there that Ruby observes is open. Nothing invisible is spotted.

Wynum [See Invisible]
Thursday March 11th, 2010 10:23:29 PM

Wynum hesitates for an instant, but picks up the parchment and tucks in his belt pouch, then promptly messages the others:
"Edmund... Arm.... I'm getting back to the Manor. This might be a diversion. Ask the locals here about the Minotaur. They must have heard the summoning alarm when he called the elementals."

That said, he goes back to the Manor, mostly by hoof, as this is faster than flying, and will not attract more attention to a Taur in the current situation.

Arm[HP 44/44 AC 24]  d20+9=22 ;

Arm cannot quite see any more but a brief glimpse of the Liontaur (spot=22). Figuring that he probably will not find his quarry in the milling crowd, he resorts to doing as Wynum asked and questions the bystanders about the minotaur.

Unsure if the dwarf is dead or alive, Thar helps the woman free him... If needed, he can do quick first aid to stop the bleeding or set any compound fractures, etc. (Heal check if needed = 18)

Once the dwarf is free, he'll help everyone get outside and take a moment tending to any serious, life threatening injuries. If there are none, then he'll turn his attention back to the fire... (Spot = 23 )

(OOC - Jerry, I'm enjoying it, and this is an interesting adventure, fighting fires and rescuing people... A good break from battle... Of course I hope we still get good XP from this ;-))) )

Edmund (HP 54/54, AC 12) Message, Fly
Friday March 12th, 2010 11:32:27 AM

Edmund puzzles outside of the manor, and continues to direct his Water Elemental to put out any of the fire that remains. Meanwhile, above, the sleet continues to beat down against the fire.

"Minotaur mages," he mutters morosely, "Marvelous!"

((No worries, this is very enjoyable, Jerry!))

Three Woes! [DM Jerry] [no pun to Evanescence intended]
Friday March 12th, 2010 11:37:02 AM

Revi's Water Elemental flies over to the fire and teamed with Edund's elemental, they make short work of the fire, preventing it from spreading to other buildings across the alley.

Wynum starts making his way to the manor, when suddenly, city constables in wagons and on horseback come whirling around the corner causing a near collision. The captain of the unit yells at Wynum, "Sir! There's been an attack upon the Mayor's Estate. All these fires are distractions. Please see all these people are safe and if you will rush to his estate on the wall where Crystal Way meets Mansion Road.

I have constables headed there now, but I don't think they are up to this is the attackers are still around. It takes real gall to go after his place. It has been reported that "Disintegrate" was used on his main dome because its just not there anymore!

With that he races on to the remains of the fire to see that things are under control with his own eyes. He nods at Edmund and the others as he pulls to a stop in front of the fire.

Inside the 2nd building, Zephyr helps the dwarven woman get Shorty free and together they help him limp out.

Arm begins questioning the crowd. No one seems to have noticed him at all! More than one asks him if he's had too much to drink. How strange. How strange indeed.

Then one woman comes forward. She is dressed in wizard robes with moons and stars on it. Very cliche. "She pulls Arm aside and through a masked face says, "The lion moves invisibly through the grasses, stalking his prey. Beware. I see moves within moves. Feints within feints."

Her eyes glow blue through the veil as she talks.

"I come, a distant crone, from the far horizon to bring certain prophesy. Woe is coming. Woe. Woe. It involves three strong trees: one a great Oak--a ruler, one a clump of mighty Silverbushes -- heroes all, one a malignant Hangtree -- a vengeful bitter.

"Their roots are already tangled. One will hang. One will prosper. One will be forever changed. Heed my Woes. I have spoken."

Then she turns and disappears into the crowd. As she leaves, Arm notices that her left arm is mangled and she walks with a limp.

============
OOC: That's fine Revi. I just went with the first one.

Hero point to Wynum for deducing that the fire was a feint. If you have a question about what a hero point is, email me. :)

Edmund (HP 54/54, AC 12) Message, Fly
Friday March 12th, 2010 2:00:32 PM

As the fire comes under control and is eventually extinguished, Edmund dispells the Water Elemental. Then, he contacts Wynum via the Message spell linking the two.

"Is everything okay at the manor?" he asks the centaur. "I find it hard to believe that this could possibly be a distraction. Besides, the manor is booby-trapped top to bottom, floor to ceiling, and wall to wall. Any intruder would have to be mad to cross the threshold, even without me there to guard it."

Regarding the successful scene--not least because this success was played out in front of an enormous crowd of people--Edmund folds his arms self-satisfactorily. Moments later, when the captain of the constabulary arrives, the wizard returns the captain's nod gravely.

"Once again it seems Plateau City is in the debt of the Mithril Order," Edmund says to the captain, with just a hint of smugness. "Edmund Greenleaf, Archmage and Supreme High Arbiter of the Order, at your service," he adds, in a tone which seems to imply that he is not really very much at anyone's service.

Turning to address the gathered crowd, Edmund speaks loudly and calmly. "Attention, fellow citizens! I am the Archmage Edmund of the Mithril Order. The Order has contained the fire! Return to your homes and allow the good constabluary easy access to the area to facilitate their duties! All is well, there is nothing more to fear!"

The wizard smiles genuinely and rocks a little on his heels once he has finished his peroration. So far, the day has gone very well, indeed.

Dropping the Manor idea altogether, Wynum heads for the Noble quarter. Galloping, jumping, flying and dancing if that's what it takes. However he needs to stop there and here to ask for directions across town. If he reaches the place, he won't charge in, and remain in observation while he waits for reinforcement, not the least because he has no weapon with him at the moment.

Zephyr helps the dwarf and his family out of the burning building, letting other hands take the famil away and look to whatever healing Shorty can get. She comes out just in time to see the wizard Edmund make his pronouncement to the crowd. She frowned and shook her head at the blowhard. 'Wonder what test he had to pass to get into the Order?' she muses. She's also just heard the news that this was a lethal feint for something more sinister.

The wild haired woman turns to Thar, one of the few that risked his life alongside her in the fire. She grabs his sleeve. "I'm with you! Where's the Mayor's estate?"

Beneficia

Still in shock Beneficia cannot believe that her house is on fire. She was standing mutely at the top of the stairs watching in horror as her precious goods burned around her. By Ffloy but this is an odd state of affairs she thought to herself.

(OOC my apologies to all. I came down with a nasty stomach flu which took me down for an 8 count. Thanks to everyone for helping put out the fire !)

Knowing that what remained of the shop was now safe from fire and free from looting due to the city guards now on station, beneficia makes the quick decision to do the right thing and see about the mayor. Knowing that in doing so she may also be able to learn more about those who would burn a tea shop to the ground and kill a helpless terrier. She quickly spots a party made up of the good folks who helped fight the fire making haste to the last known location of the mayor and offers to assist in whatever way she can saying "if by having my shop burned, we can save the mayor tis but a small price to pay"

Totally bewildered now, Arm struggles to focus on the words of the seer. Frowning at her dire prophesies, he watches her depart. Thinking for a moment to follow her, he decides against it, surmising that he would get very little if any more information from her.

He then seeks out the rest, specifically Thar, and relates what the crone has told him...including her description as well.

OOC: Jerry, I don't mean to disagree, but I don't believe Arm would deserve the full amount of xp that you gave. He was absent from the town for the majority of the action, but the choice of course is up to you. :)

Beneficia

"thanks revi" replies beneficia "if by profit or honest labor I can help discover what has transpired here and affects our city then by Ffloy it shall be done !"

OOC I was simply adding flavor by way of "rumors", there is a fire, magic fireballs, teleporting troublemakers and apparently problems with the mayor, it only stands to reason that rumors would fly, thats what people do. Had we been across the table from each other I would have engaged the DM in a little mongering. For me the main attraction to roleplaying is playing the character and in fact drawing the DM into the gameplay which improves the experience for everyone IMO I prefer not to rely 100% on the DM for all window dressing.
no intent to confuse was meant as it is clearly a PC posting and NOT the DM :0
however if you wish I will refrain from such postings in the future, although I feel it will detract from the overall environment

Fire/DM Buzz
Monday March 29th, 2010 10:42:47 AM

The group in various ways come to find out there are fires breaking out in the city. Either they are told by someone they are with, or they see the fires themselves. After the initial fire is under control, it is heard the mayor house is also suspiciously ablaze.

The characters that come to the mayors house can see a fire crew working on it and getting it under control, but the mayor is deeply upset at the fact someone would do such a thing. He calls everyone together that has helped him this evening and thanks each of you for the support.

The characters know the city fairly well and from the looks of it, something like fire will bring the worst of enemies together, so as to control such unpredictable disasters such as a roaring conflagration. Some of the citizens that have vowed to vote the mayor out of office are some of the very people that are helping with the fire. It just goes to show, there are no politics when a someone needs your help.

The mayor shakes the hands of everyone that has arrived and when he reaches the group, he will shake your hands and whisper in your ears, "Please come see me in the morning. I think I know what is happening."

With that, the cinders smolder as the very last is doused and smoke dances in the air, high above and out of sight.

Wynum
Monday March 29th, 2010 11:56:04 AM

Wynum does not wait much for discussion.
"What about the Manor? Is is safe? It wasn't a diversion after all, but no accident either!"

"Sadly, we have much to do. We need to question the crowd and neighbours right now. Arm, can you help out? We should ask Constable Rabbitsfoot for help. Where is that lady from the Tea House? She might have information. We must know also if there's a link between the burned buildings. Ah, we should split and ask everyone about spotting magics. Ed, can you check wether these fires were magical? If they summoned fire elementals like at the Tea House, people should have heard the summoning alarm. We need description of any suspicious spellcasters, especially that minotaur, though he could not have been at every place at once, and... by the Gods of Tesing, much to do!"

Still ranting, he leaves for the Tea House to enact his part of the plan.

Arm[HP 44/44 AC 24]  d20+17=18 ;
Monday March 29th, 2010 1:17:38 PM

Arm nods to Wynum and immediately sets about the task of questioning the onlookers, hoping to gain valuable information while the details are still fresh in their minds. However, be if from his sudden change of scenery or the surrounding chaos, he is not as pleasant as he would like to be (diplomacy=18, nat. 1...DOH!).

Thar shares the mayor's concern about the fire, but could care less whether or not the man is reelected. Human politics are near te bottom of his priority list, but he does want to know who would start such a fire...

He agrees with Wynum's plan, and once he checks that no onlookers need healing, he begins asking the various members of the crowd about any suspicious characters or events surrounding the fire... He does his best to use his clerical and counseling skills to obtain the information...

Gather Info? = 18
Diplomacy? = 15

Edmund (HP 54/54, AC 12) Message, Fly
Monday March 29th, 2010 9:22:22 PM

Edmund hurries along and arrives at the Mayor's residence as well.

When Wynum talks about summoned elementals, Edmund corrects him. "Ah, that was me, actually," he says. "But the fires were magical in nature--there was a minotaur in a purple robe responsible for the one at the tea house. He teleported away, I think! Or at least he vanished in a puff of smoke."

Furrowing his brow, Edmund considers the Mayor's comment. "I think it is best if one or two of us return to the Manor, as well, seeing as we left in such a hurry and left no one behind to guard it."

Aftermath/DM Buzz
Tuesday March 30th, 2010 10:55:23 AM

Wynum puts into motion, a set of plans, he believes will get to the heart of the matter, but unfortunately, all the people he can think of do not appear present. So, giving direction, he heads off for a hot cup of tea.

Arm tries to help and gather information, but he appears to be more putting off the crowd more then gaining their trust. However, he is a member of the mighty Mithril Order, they must say something, so the information he receives is incomplete at best.

Thar couldn't care less about who herds these city dwelling green horns. he does however seek justice for those that deserve it, but in the mean time, he cares for those with minor burns and smoke inhalation problems. People are very grateful. His attempts to find knowledge seem to be better then others. perhaps a healing spell or two also loosens some tongues.

Revi is one to become active in times like this it seems, because she was able to get a bit more information then the others. perhaps it was the look of a barbarian with the backdrop of devastating fire, moved people to tell what they know. Either that, or she found just the right people.

Edmund knowing that people are safe, returns back to Mithril Manor, to make sure, more trouble does not follow the heros home and in the process, he can see the look of fear on peoples faces as the unknown creeps into the backs of their consciousness.

The mayor thanks everyone again and the scene slowly fades. The groups questioning of the crowd gets a lot of information, but the key is, some people saw a gnome, also in purple robes, very near the house earlier in the day, but no one saw the house actually set on fire.

The group finishes their questioning a few hours after the fires are out. The mayors manor is not completely ruined, but it is clear, it was caught early or the occupants inside would easily have perished.

Those walking up to the tea house can see it is closed at this time of night. No signs of anyone being awake with the shutters closed and all the lamps out.

The streets are still bustling however, as those people caught up in the excitement have yet to wind down enough to return home.

Just a reminder, when it comes to skill checks, a 20 is not automatic success and a 1 is not automatic failure. I would like to suggest, if you see someone using a skill like Gather Information, Diplomacy or just about any other skill, you can Aid Another to increase their success rate, but I rarely allow a skill that effects the attitudes of others, to be used by more then one character on the same crowd. If I do not see a character specify they are helping another, I will take the highest roll.

She looks about to the other members of the Order. "What next then?"

Upon returning to the manor, Edmund rushes straight to his room to ascertain that no one has made off with his tea set. Once it is found, he begins to work out new methods of protecting the manor, in addition to circles of protection and alarms on the less-used doors and windows.

In the meantime, he tries to recall anything he can about who the current mayor is, and whether or not he can remember any useful information about the mayor's family and political history.

(Buzz, the "Tea House" is actually the first house that was set on fire, so that Wynum was returning there to question the people about hearing a magical alarm and seeing magics, not to drink tea. He hates tea, anyways...)

Convening with the others at the Manor, he paces about:
"Well, I hope the constables will do a better job at finding clues. You don't set fire to several houses without attracting attention or sound the alarm. I hope they have a wizard to check for magical activity there. And and... purple robes, that's all we got."

He comes over the table and quickly grabs a tea biscuit, which promptly disappear in his Large mouth.
"Where's the supper? Didn't you do the supper, Ed? Much to do. Two people to see tomorrow. I wish we had a break!"

That said, and still on an empty stomach, he goes back down to crafting arrows.

WHOA WHOA WHOA.....

Am I hearing, the new people have not been introduced to the group yet?

Sorry about the tea house blunder. I did mention it might be choppy for a while. I am running two characters and two games, so I thank you for your patience.

Zephyr

Zephyr looks at the other woman for moment. "More of you?" She gives a small, formal bow. "I am Zephyr, follow of Domi, of the Way of the Open Palm. I had been speaking with your companions about joining up with the Order, as I have heard that their goals are similiar to my own."

Arm shakes his head in frustration and reports what little he has heard to Thar...not that it will help them much.

"Huh, really?" Revi looks over at the other Order members and is about to say something smart-assed, but then realizes she kinda barged her way into the Order initially, but then earned her way in by outfighting Julian-- Looking about, she wondered where that little man was. "So, open palm eh? Does that mean you're a monk? Or do you just slap people in a fight?"

Thar
Wednesday March 31st, 2010 12:05:26 PM

Thar is frustrated too at their lack of progress, and heads back to the manor. To change his mood, he'll ask Ruby if he can hold her hand, if she'll honor him by allowing him to do so...

On the way back to the manor, he engages in small talk with Zephyr and asks her what sort of room she would like for her lodging. "I'd like to make you feel welcome, and we have a few furnished rooms that aren't being used right now. Let me know if you need anything."

When they get back to the manor, he'll sit in the main room and try to review what they know about the case with the rest of the members. "Is there anything we can do before going back to meet the mayor? Ideas anyone?"

You will have a daily DM post. I just couldn;t do it this morning...:(

Here comes the sun/DM Buzz

Revi has learned of a few things and shares it with the group. Mainly, there is a new fashion on purple robes lately.

Zephyr is willing to face whatever is next on the plate of these heros. When the barbarian druid asks who she is, she, with confidence, answers.

Edmund can see, his tea set is perched precariously on the edge of the table. The tray it is sitting on teeters back and forth as if the fate of a dust particle decides it's entire fate. He gets to the table just in time to see it topple over and fall crashing to the ground. Well...at least that is what he is thinking, but when he returns, in fact, it is safe and resting in the middle of the table where he left it. Now, to other matters...
Please let me know how you are protecting the manor and spells actually used, if any at this time.

Highlight to display spoiler: {As soon as I get a chance to look everything over, I will acknowledge those great skill rolls you made and bring you up to date. Thank you for your patience! :)}

Wynum snacks and hopes the guards and inspectors have some arcane or divine resources, to determine what might be happening. He then informs the others, his belly is rumbling with not so subtle hints.

Arm is disappointed in his efforts and returns with the others, contributing what is possible. Every little bit helps in these situations however and one never knows when important information will arise.

Thar wants to show some affection and it is returned to him in the usual manner and amount. Highlight to display spoiler: {I apologize, I have not had time to read up on Ruby, but I ensure you, these posts will improve when things calm down with the migration. :)}

So Revi and Zephyr spar with words as everyone settles in for the night. The owners of the tea house have family in the city they can stay with and the mayor's house was spared the living quarters. So the only people needing to rest their head in a strange bed are the new people to the group. Winding down is difficult for some as the thoughts of the evening pass before them over and over again. Others sleep sound, dreaming of slaying evil dragons and looting their horde, without having to share any of it, of course.

The day soon enough arrives and so is a fresh look on things. New spells are available for the clerics and druids that pray in the morning. The arcane casters on the other hand have to sleep in a couple more hours to make sure the rest time is complete.

Breakfast is soon served and it is now time to start the day.

To everyone: Highlight to display spoiler: { These posts are lame right now, but they will improve. I would like to ask you, if you mention a NPC in your post, you also give a brief description of their personality and association. Thank you. :)}
