Back Out Into the Grass (DM JohnP) Monday March 29th, 2010 10:06:56 PM
The Bloodpack have regrouped, refreshed and re-memorized their spells after their battle with the snake men. The battle was hard fought and could have gone either way but, in the end, the Bloodpack managed to pull through with some help from the all-powerful deities of the Wold. Sometimes that is just the way that things go, that the best laid plans of mice and men are blown flat before the winds of time and fortune and health.
With but a moment's thought, the Bloodpack are back at the scene of the battle. The furious struggle for life in the Sargrass has left little of the remains of the snake creatures. The Bloodpack can, if they choose, look around for souvenirs of the fight. Who wouldn't want to mount a giant snake skull over the mantle?
But the path to where these refugees had come from has been largely obscured by the grass. Gilan, though, uses his druidic magics and can tell the Bloodpack that another group of snake-creatures is close to what was once the border near Hook City. Of course, that may not be the border any longer. Or, at least not with Hook City. Based on Gilan's knowledge of the Sargrass, it would take the better part of a day to reach where the snake-creatures have set up camp.
The only question is whether the Bloodpack are ready to seek out this challenge. And, how they will do so.
DM OOC:
1. Did you get a loot list for the last combat? Did you loot anything?
2. Does someone wish to sub for Gilan? Or should I run Gilan as an NPC for most of the time?
3. Anything else that I need to clear up?

Checking the Loot Pile (DM JohnP) Tuesday March 30th, 2010 11:32:03 PM
The members of the Bloodpack had forgotten that they had secured the gear and equipment from the snake-men after the last battle. When they look around for the pile, they almost trip over it. After taking a quick inventory, everything gets handed off to Gilan to return to Oddholme. The druid needs to do something else and does not think that he will be able to seek out the snake-creatures.

DM OOC I'm taking it slow this week.just to get everyone back in the swing of things. Not to mention that I need to see who is, and isn't, posting so that I can make adjustments to the potentially brutal final combat. I mean, I don't want to leave the Bloodpack with a TPK on my conscience, do I?
Tishe' (AC 12 HP 77 /77) (Mage Armor, Endure Elements, Unseen Servant) d20+16=34 ; d20+16=33 ; d20+16=26 ; d20+16=21 ; d20+16=19 ; d20+16=35 ; Wednesday March 31st, 2010 11:54:59 AM
Tishe' feels a little chagrin at forgetting they had already stripped the snake-taurs, and distracts herself by getting Wart into his satchel and preparing for a day of travel.
With Gilan gone, Tishe' looks around and mentally counts heads and capabilities. Trellus, leading and healing with some beating. Yanosh the same. Falmar, some casting but mostly beating. And me, mostly casting.
Then she thinks of those not here... Gilan and Grymash went back with the gear. Flea off on her own somewhere. Aeryon, Vayine, and Murdock with OddHolme. Sterlin and Ayuk gone Walker. Macasthai gone with that group that Xenia told me about in the northern continent. Olaf, he had something to do somewhere, didn't he? So many friends not here. So many capabilities for the Bloodpack not here.
Tishe' shakes her head, trying to get rid of her musings. "Set up the problems in your head one at a time", she tells herself, "and then fix them, one at a time. We may be few, but the Sargrass needs us."
"Talki fresal, dondit likki", she says, "The land, my life"
"Number One: With Olaf, Flea, and Gilan not here, we don't have a scout. We're gonna need to compensate for that." That's pretty easy since Tishe's druidic talents enable her to follow tracks. "That and Falmar's Moxy flying topcover can give us some prior warning for trouble."
"Number Two: With Gilan and Grymash gone, our two strongest warriors are gone. We're gonna need as much advance warning and careful planning to successfully pull off a rescue because brute force is right out. Again, scouts and then Trellus' brain can work in our favor."
.................
Tishe' takes the lead in back tracking the snake-taurs through the Sargrass using her Druidic skills. She makes sure that the rest are close behind her for she can't fight or escape like Gilan, Flea, or Olaf could.
"I've also got a spell called Prying Eyes", she tells Trellus, "that can be a very good short range magical scout, but can only last 9 hours. I should save it until we know we are closer, yes?"

Trellus smiles warmly at Tishe. "You're getting pretty waxed at this 'thinking ahead' pick," he teases lightly.
The blond man nods agreement to her point about the Prying Eyes spell. "Yes, let's hold it. I'm thinking Falmar's bird should also be able to help keep a lookout. Is that right, Falmar?"
The cleric has also been wondering about the current pack's ability to deal some real damage, especially to these snake-taurs, who all seem somewhat immune to magical attacks. "I may want to change spell lists in the morning. Go for more buffing and see if I can do some front-line damage," he muses.
He continues pondering as the group follows Tishe through the grass.

Into the Grass (DM JohnP) Wednesday March 31st, 2010 11:16:54 PM
The Bloodpack follow the faint trail left by the snake creatures, guided by the skills of Tishe' and the information provided by Gilan before he left. In addition, Falmar has sent Mox aloft to provide scouting and advance warning of any potential conflict.
After several hours, Tishe' thinks that they have definitely gained upon the snake creatures. What were once faint smudges upon the horizon are now visibly the crystal mountains that ring the plains of the Sargrass. Perhaps the snake creatures originally came from that direction?
In fact, Tishe' figures that she and her companions could press onwards and catch up near evening if they so chose. Or, instead, they can find a place to spend the night and prepare for battle on the morrow.
DM OOC - Holiday Schedule I am not going away for Easter, so I can keep up a regular posting schedule. Of course, I realize that some of you may have holiday commitments.
Tishe' (AC 12 HP 77 /77) (Mage Armor, Endure Elements, Unseen Servant) Thursday April 1st, 2010 10:59:21 AM
Tishe' nods to Trellus. "I think being leader occasionally has helped me get better at planning ahead", she tells him seriously.
When she finds the signs that they are gaining, Tishe' asks if a evening strike or a morning fight would be better. The mystic is fine either way, but "come morning there may be one less prisoner if the snake-taurs eat Noble Races."

Trellus ponders Tishe's question, absentmindedly rubbing the back of his neck as he does. "Well," he responds with a wry smile, "it depends."
Growing more serious, the cleric continues. "I'm gonna have to buff to fight these treadles Gry-style, and I don't have those spells memorized. If there aren't that many, it won't matter, and we can jump 'em tonight. But, if there's more than Yanosh and Falmar and your summoned critters can handle easily, we're gonna need to hold off."
"Think you're Prying Eyes spell can figure out their pattern without them knowing we're here?"
Tishe' (AC 12 HP 77 /77) (Mage Armor, Endure Elements, Unseen Servant) d4=2 ; Thursday April 1st, 2010 3:15:57 PM
"They are not invisible, but are difficult to see, so as long as there is light to see by, my Prying Eyes should scout without alerting anyone. We have to be within a mile of the snake-taur camp before it will work, however."
Tishe' will hold off casting Prying Eyes until Moxy alerts the group that the Bloodpack is within a mile of the snake-taur camp. When the Bloodpack is ready, she will cast Prying Eyes, weaving up 11 semitangible, visible magical orbs. She prepares thier instructions as they clamber about the Mystic.
"Fly that direction (points down snake-taur trail) until you find a snake creature group. Surround them, observe one hour or until any Eye is attacked, then return and report." (ooc: 25 words)

After a brief conference, Tishe' casts a spell and summons a number of tumbling spheres around her. After briefly instructing them, the theurge gestures towards the trail left by the snake creatures. The orbs move quickly and silently over the flattened grass towards whatever is waiting.
And waiting is what this entails.
Fifteen minutes go by and nothing happens. Trellus is pondering what spells to request from Domi on the morrow and the others, Falmar and Yanosh, are also waiting patiently.
Half an hour goes by and all Tishe' knows is that none of her spies have been destroyed. The shadows are getting long and the others are getting ready to spend a night in the open by searching for the grasses needed to prepare sleeping mats and covers.
Finally, after nearly 90 minutes, the spheres return to hover around Tishe'. One by one, the theurge gathers the magical constructs to learn what they have seen. All of the eyes stayed together and each relates the same story aside from minor details.
Tishe' only - Highlight to display spoiler: {The orbs followed the trail left by the snake creatures for what seems like nearly fifteen minutes. Aside from some minor scavengers of the grass, there is nothing to be seen. Then, the leading eye spots a snake-creature in an area of thin grass that has been flattened into a small clearing. The eyes move through the grass to better observe what is happening.
In total, the eyes see a dozen humanoids. One human is clearly a prisoner, lying bound hand and foot upon the grass. Five others might be working with the snake-creatures since they are armed wityh scimitars and unbound. The remaining three humans, an elf, and two half-elves have their hands bound are linked into a coffle by ropes looped around their necks.
There is one tall, bald humanoid with scaly skin that hangs loosely from where his ears should be to down his neck. That one has a snake looped over his shoulders, draping down near the scimitar and crooked knife strapped to a loose belt.
There is also what is clearly a snake-taur, with a massive humanoid torso atop a pallid snake body. That one is armed differently, with a spiked morningstar, and is clearly armored.
The unchained humanoids and the scaly-skinned humanoid seem to be making camp, making sleeping arrangements and ensuring that the prisoners are secured. The snake-taur is seated, unmoving and possibly either asleep or meditating. The prisoners are clearly nervous and traumatized, sneaking glimpses at the snake-taur.
Nearly at the end of the appointed hour, the scaly-skinned humanoid stands and moves towards the prisoners. It pushes them about, looking at how they move and seeming to measure them. Finally, it selects the elf, who happens to be the smallest prisoner, and roughly pulls the rope over the woman's head. Then, with a jerk, the elven woman is dragged and thrown to the ground just beyond the reach of the other prisoners. A quick flash is all most of the eyes catch of the crooked knife being drawn before a gush of blood sprays upon the grass, unmindful of the threat of bloodflies. The elven woman barely reacts, moving her hands towards her throat before slumping to the grass.
The humanoids move close, standing around the scaly-skinned one as the knife flashes. Bloody gobbets of flesh are passed, dripping, to the humanoids who tip their heads back and place the flesh into their mouths. After barely chewing, the humanoids swallow and grin, blood trickling from the corners of their mouths.
The butchery continues for several minutes while the other prisoners look away, crying and rocking. At least one prisoner vomits unto the grass, trying to wipe their chin with the rope wrapped around their wrists. Others are squirming away from the bloodflies that have been attracted by the blood soaking into the soil near them. Strangely, the humanoids and snake-creatures do not seem bothered by the vermin.
At the end of the observation period, the scaly-skinned humanoid stands from the torn and butchered remains of the elf and moves towards the slave coffle once more. The path back to Tishe' is now shrouded in darkness and the eyes report very little except night-flying insects during the return trip.}

"2 Leaders and 6 Henchmen, and the henchmen appear to be completely evil by thier actions. I suspect that the Bloodflies did not affect them because they have a "Repel Vermin" spell on them. Either that, or as snake-taurs, they have a natural immunity."

Trellus holds up a hand to forestall Yanosh from casting his spell, and grimly listens to Tishe's report. He nods, silently agreeing with her assessment that no more prisoners are likely to die tonight.
"We hit in the morning," he states flatly. "Tishe and I will start by trying to cut off as many of them as we can. Tishe with her ice dome, and me with a Blade Barrier. Hopefully that only leaves a couple out, and we hit them hard. Me, Yanosh, and Falmar all need to be prepared for melee, so get those buff spells ready. I may throw another spell or two at the beginning, depending on how many we're actually taking on. You're free to as well, but remember snake-taur is probably resistant."
"Yanosh, I'm gonna drop a Stoneskin on you before we hit. So hold up for that."
The cleric hands Tishe a wand. "Cure Serious Wounds," he tells her. "If I get too busy, you may need to jump in with the healing."
The blond man looks around, all business. "We rest now, get up a couple hours before dawn so we can learn spells, and get to them, and hit with the sunrise. Questions?"

The Morning (DM JohnP) Sunday April 4th, 2010 11:07:28 PM
The night seems to come earlier than usual, but that may just be their jumpy nerves from the day. After arranging a watch schedule, the Bloodpack settle down for whatever rest they can get after Tishe' has related what her spell revealed of the events in the snake-taur camp. Still, they have an objective in mind and a mission for the morrow. And that might be enough to compel them to rest and recover.
The morning comes sooner than expected, the sun creeping up above the horizon. The divine casters have completed their devotions and have received their daily allotment of magic. Similarly, the arcanists have studied and prepared their spells. They seem to be ready to adventure.
There is only the matter of preparations and devising a method for scouting and approaching the snake-taur camp.
Tishe' (AC 12 HP 77 /77) (Mage Armor, Endure Elements, Unseen Servant) Monday April 5th, 2010 12:09:43 PM

Falmar - Stoneskin dam red 10/adamantine for 90 hit points - Delay Poison 9 hrs, poison no effect - Barkskin +4 natural AC - Freedom of Movement, always win grapples

With Moxy in the air, the group can approach close, then Tishe' can cast Clairaudience/Clairvoyance to see and hear what is happening before casting short duration spells and attacking.
Tishe' tells her packmates the short duration spells she plans on casting right before the attack is: Shield and Fly (on herself), 2 Summon Monster V spells, Haste (on everyone), and then charge in with Wall of Thorns.
