Back Out Into the Grass (DM JohnP) Monday March 29th, 2010 10:06:56 PM
The Bloodpack have regrouped, refreshed and re-memorized their spells after their battle with the snake men. The battle was hard fought and could have gone either way but, in the end, the Bloodpack managed to pull through with some help from the all-powerful deities of the Wold. Sometimes that is just the way that things go, that the best laid plans of mice and men are blown flat before the winds of time and fortune and health.
With but a moment's thought, the Bloodpack are back at the scene of the battle. The furious struggle for life in the Sargrass has left little of the remains of the snake creatures. The Bloodpack can, if they choose, look around for souvenirs of the fight. Who wouldn't want to mount a giant snake skull over the mantle?
But the path to where these refugees had come from has been largely obscured by the grass. Gilan, though, uses his druidic magics and can tell the Bloodpack that another group of snake-creatures is close to what was once the border near Hook City. Of course, that may not be the border any longer. Or, at least not with Hook City. Based on Gilan's knowledge of the Sargrass, it would take the better part of a day to reach where the snake-creatures have set up camp.
The only question is whether the Bloodpack are ready to seek out this challenge. And, how they will do so.
DM OOC:
1. Did you get a loot list for the last combat? Did you loot anything?
2. Does someone wish to sub for Gilan? Or should I run Gilan as an NPC for most of the time?
3. Anything else that I need to clear up?

Checking the Loot Pile (DM JohnP) Tuesday March 30th, 2010 11:32:03 PM
The members of the Bloodpack had forgotten that they had secured the gear and equipment from the snake-men after the last battle. When they look around for the pile, they almost trip over it. After taking a quick inventory, everything gets handed off to Gilan to return to Oddholme. The druid needs to do something else and does not think that he will be able to seek out the snake-creatures.

DM OOC I'm taking it slow this week.just to get everyone back in the swing of things. Not to mention that I need to see who is, and isn't, posting so that I can make adjustments to the potentially brutal final combat. I mean, I don't want to leave the Bloodpack with a TPK on my conscience, do I?
Tishe' (AC 12 HP 77 /77) (Mage Armor, Endure Elements, Unseen Servant) d20+16=34 ; d20+16=33 ; d20+16=26 ; d20+16=21 ; d20+16=19 ; d20+16=35 ; Wednesday March 31st, 2010 11:54:59 AM
Tishe' feels a little chagrin at forgetting they had already stripped the snake-taurs, and distracts herself by getting Wart into his satchel and preparing for a day of travel.
With Gilan gone, Tishe' looks around and mentally counts heads and capabilities. Trellus, leading and healing with some beating. Yanosh the same. Falmar, some casting but mostly beating. And me, mostly casting.
Then she thinks of those not here... Gilan and Grymash went back with the gear. Flea off on her own somewhere. Aeryon, Vayine, and Murdock with OddHolme. Sterlin and Ayuk gone Walker. Macasthai gone with that group that Xenia told me about in the northern continent. Olaf, he had something to do somewhere, didn't he? So many friends not here. So many capabilities for the Bloodpack not here.
Tishe' shakes her head, trying to get rid of her musings. "Set up the problems in your head one at a time", she tells herself, "and then fix them, one at a time. We may be few, but the Sargrass needs us."
"Talki fresal, dondit likki", she says, "The land, my life"
"Number One: With Olaf, Flea, and Gilan not here, we don't have a scout. We're gonna need to compensate for that." That's pretty easy since Tishe's druidic talents enable her to follow tracks. "That and Falmar's Moxy flying topcover can give us some prior warning for trouble."
"Number Two: With Gilan and Grymash gone, our two strongest warriors are gone. We're gonna need as much advance warning and careful planning to successfully pull off a rescue because brute force is right out. Again, scouts and then Trellus' brain can work in our favor."
.................
Tishe' takes the lead in back tracking the snake-taurs through the Sargrass using her Druidic skills. She makes sure that the rest are close behind her for she can't fight or escape like Gilan, Flea, or Olaf could.
"I've also got a spell called Prying Eyes", she tells Trellus, "that can be a very good short range magical scout, but can only last 9 hours. I should save it until we know we are closer, yes?"

Trellus smiles warmly at Tishe. "You're getting pretty waxed at this 'thinking ahead' pick," he teases lightly.
The blond man nods agreement to her point about the Prying Eyes spell. "Yes, let's hold it. I'm thinking Falmar's bird should also be able to help keep a lookout. Is that right, Falmar?"
The cleric has also been wondering about the current pack's ability to deal some real damage, especially to these snake-taurs, who all seem somewhat immune to magical attacks. "I may want to change spell lists in the morning. Go for more buffing and see if I can do some front-line damage," he muses.
He continues pondering as the group follows Tishe through the grass.

Into the Grass (DM JohnP) Wednesday March 31st, 2010 11:16:54 PM
The Bloodpack follow the faint trail left by the snake creatures, guided by the skills of Tishe' and the information provided by Gilan before he left. In addition, Falmar has sent Mox aloft to provide scouting and advance warning of any potential conflict.
After several hours, Tishe' thinks that they have definitely gained upon the snake creatures. What were once faint smudges upon the horizon are now visibly the crystal mountains that ring the plains of the Sargrass. Perhaps the snake creatures originally came from that direction?
In fact, Tishe' figures that she and her companions could press onwards and catch up near evening if they so chose. Or, instead, they can find a place to spend the night and prepare for battle on the morrow.
DM OOC - Holiday Schedule I am not going away for Easter, so I can keep up a regular posting schedule. Of course, I realize that some of you may have holiday commitments.
Tishe' (AC 12 HP 77 /77) (Mage Armor, Endure Elements, Unseen Servant) Thursday April 1st, 2010 10:59:21 AM
Tishe' nods to Trellus. "I think being leader occasionally has helped me get better at planning ahead", she tells him seriously.
When she finds the signs that they are gaining, Tishe' asks if a evening strike or a morning fight would be better. The mystic is fine either way, but "come morning there may be one less prisoner if the snake-taurs eat Noble Races."

Trellus ponders Tishe's question, absentmindedly rubbing the back of his neck as he does. "Well," he responds with a wry smile, "it depends."
Growing more serious, the cleric continues. "I'm gonna have to buff to fight these treadles Gry-style, and I don't have those spells memorized. If there aren't that many, it won't matter, and we can jump 'em tonight. But, if there's more than Yanosh and Falmar and your summoned critters can handle easily, we're gonna need to hold off."
"Think you're Prying Eyes spell can figure out their pattern without them knowing we're here?"
Tishe' (AC 12 HP 77 /77) (Mage Armor, Endure Elements, Unseen Servant) d4=2 ; Thursday April 1st, 2010 3:15:57 PM
"They are not invisible, but are difficult to see, so as long as there is light to see by, my Prying Eyes should scout without alerting anyone. We have to be within a mile of the snake-taur camp before it will work, however."
Tishe' will hold off casting Prying Eyes until Moxy alerts the group that the Bloodpack is within a mile of the snake-taur camp. When the Bloodpack is ready, she will cast Prying Eyes, weaving up 11 semitangible, visible magical orbs. She prepares thier instructions as they clamber about the Mystic.

After a brief conference, Tishe' casts a spell and summons a number of tumbling spheres around her. After briefly instructing them, the theurge gestures towards the trail left by the snake creatures. The orbs move quickly and silently over the flattened grass towards whatever is waiting.
And waiting is what this entails.
Fifteen minutes go by and nothing happens. Trellus is pondering what spells to request from Domi on the morrow and the others, Falmar and Yanosh, are also waiting patiently.
Half an hour goes by and all Tishe' knows is that none of her spies have been destroyed. The shadows are getting long and the others are getting ready to spend a night in the open by searching for the grasses needed to prepare sleeping mats and covers.
Finally, after nearly 90 minutes, the spheres return to hover around Tishe'. One by one, the theurge gathers the magical constructs to learn what they have seen. All of the eyes stayed together and each relates the same story aside from minor details.
Tishe' only - Highlight to display spoiler: {The orbs followed the trail left by the snake creatures for what seems like nearly fifteen minutes. Aside from some minor scavengers of the grass, there is nothing to be seen. Then, the leading eye spots a snake-creature in an area of thin grass that has been flattened into a small clearing. The eyes move through the grass to better observe what is happening.
In total, the eyes see a dozen humanoids. One human is clearly a prisoner, lying bound hand and foot upon the grass. Five others might be working with the snake-creatures since they are armed wityh scimitars and unbound. The remaining three humans, an elf, and two half-elves have their hands bound are linked into a coffle by ropes looped around their necks.
There is one tall, bald humanoid with scaly skin that hangs loosely from where his ears should be to down his neck. That one has a snake looped over his shoulders, draping down near the scimitar and crooked knife strapped to a loose belt.
There is also what is clearly a snake-taur, with a massive humanoid torso atop a pallid snake body. That one is armed differently, with a spiked morningstar, and is clearly armored.
The unchained humanoids and the scaly-skinned humanoid seem to be making camp, making sleeping arrangements and ensuring that the prisoners are secured. The snake-taur is seated, unmoving and possibly either asleep or meditating. The prisoners are clearly nervous and traumatized, sneaking glimpses at the snake-taur.
Nearly at the end of the appointed hour, the scaly-skinned humanoid stands and moves towards the prisoners. It pushes them about, looking at how they move and seeming to measure them. Finally, it selects the elf, who happens to be the smallest prisoner, and roughly pulls the rope over the woman's head. Then, with a jerk, the elven woman is dragged and thrown to the ground just beyond the reach of the other prisoners. A quick flash is all most of the eyes catch of the crooked knife being drawn before a gush of blood sprays upon the grass, unmindful of the threat of bloodflies. The elven woman barely reacts, moving her hands towards her throat before slumping to the grass.
The humanoids move close, standing around the scaly-skinned one as the knife flashes. Bloody gobbets of flesh are passed, dripping, to the humanoids who tip their heads back and place the flesh into their mouths. After barely chewing, the humanoids swallow and grin, blood trickling from the corners of their mouths.
The butchery continues for several minutes while the other prisoners look away, crying and rocking. At least one prisoner vomits unto the grass, trying to wipe their chin with the rope wrapped around their wrists. Others are squirming away from the bloodflies that have been attracted by the blood soaking into the soil near them. Strangely, the humanoids and snake-creatures do not seem bothered by the vermin.
At the end of the observation period, the scaly-skinned humanoid stands from the torn and butchered remains of the elf and moves towards the slave coffle once more. The path back to Tishe' is now shrouded in darkness and the eyes report very little except night-flying insects during the return trip.}

"2 Leaders and 6 Henchmen, and the henchmen appear to be completely evil by thier actions. I suspect that the Bloodflies did not affect them because they have a "Repel Vermin" spell on them. Either that, or as snake-taurs, they have a natural immunity."

Trellus holds up a hand to forestall Yanosh from casting his spell, and grimly listens to Tishe's report. He nods, silently agreeing with her assessment that no more prisoners are likely to die tonight.
"We hit in the morning," he states flatly. "Tishe and I will start by trying to cut off as many of them as we can. Tishe with her ice dome, and me with a Blade Barrier. Hopefully that only leaves a couple out, and we hit them hard. Me, Yanosh, and Falmar all need to be prepared for melee, so get those buff spells ready. I may throw another spell or two at the beginning, depending on how many we're actually taking on. You're free to as well, but remember snake-taur is probably resistant."
"Yanosh, I'm gonna drop a Stoneskin on you before we hit. So hold up for that."
The cleric hands Tishe a wand. "Cure Serious Wounds," he tells her. "If I get too busy, you may need to jump in with the healing."
The blond man looks around, all business. "We rest now, get up a couple hours before dawn so we can learn spells, and get to them, and hit with the sunrise. Questions?"

Tishe' thinks. "My best first spell should be Wall of Thorns to enclose as many as possible. I don't have my Staff of Ice anymore, but my Staff of Fire can make many Wall of Fire spells."
The Morning (DM JohnP) Sunday April 4th, 2010 11:07:28 PM
The night seems to come earlier than usual, but that may just be their jumpy nerves from the day. After arranging a watch schedule, the Bloodpack settle down for whatever rest they can get after Tishe' has related what her spell revealed of the events in the snake-taur camp. Still, they have an objective in mind and a mission for the morrow. And that might be enough to compel them to rest and recover.
The morning comes sooner than expected, the sun creeping up above the horizon. The divine casters have completed their devotions and have received their daily allotment of magic. Similarly, the arcanists have studied and prepared their spells. They seem to be ready to adventure.
There is only the matter of preparations and devising a method for scouting and approaching the snake-taur camp.
Tishe' (AC 12 HP 77 /77) (Mage Armor, Endure Elements, Unseen Servant) Monday April 5th, 2010 12:09:43 PM

The Bloodpack, even the strangely silent Yanosh, make their morning preparations for the coming rescue of the prisoners. And they lay their plans, too. Including how they will approach and perform their final magical preparations.
Tishe' lays out the basics of the plan and Trellus embellishes it slightly. Falmar is ready to contribute, too. And that presumably includes the use of his familiar, Moxy.
Once Falmar relays the instructions, Moxy cocks his head before making a scratching motion with one foot. Clearly, Moxy wants something in payment for this little adventure. The bird looks up at Falmar and the others before croaking some words that Tishe' also understands.
Falmar & Tishe' only - Highlight to display spoiler: {You share shinies with Moxy? For doing this?}
Still, the bond between mage and familiar is strong enough that Falmar can persuade the bird to perform scouting duties. The raven flaps its wings and climbs into the air as the foursome start following the trail picked out by Tishe'. Maybe thirty minutes later, Falmar gets a mental communication from Moxy telling him that the bird has spotted a group of humanoids and creatures matching what Falmar told him to look for.

She places the invisible scrying device 30 feet in the air to see over the Sargrass at the group of snake-taurs and captives. Anything she sees or hears from the spell, she relates to her packmates.

"Me casting," Trellus responds with a chuckle. "First though, we gotta close enough to cast those spells that'll only last a few minutes. Let's keep moving forward, but a bit slower. Let us know when we're, say, 300' away."
Into the Grass (DM JohnP) Tuesday April 6th, 2010 11:08:23 PM
The group pauses while Tishe' casts her scrying spell, taking 10 minutes to complete the spell. Once the spell is completed, Tishe' takes a moment to orient her unseen observer before reporting on what she sees.
The clearing looks very much like what her magical spies reported the night before. The large snake-taur is still meditating or perhaps basking in the morning sun. The bound human prisoner is still quite close to the large snake-taur, watched over by one of the humanoids. The other four humanoids seem to be making preparations for moving out. The other prisoners seem to have been removed from the slave coffle and are lying on the ground. The corpse of the woman from the night before is lying where it was, untouched by the usual scavengers of the Sargrass.
Tishe' describes everything that she sees and hears to Trellus and the others. While the theurge concentrates, she quietly plans strategy with Trellus. Falmar and Yanosh are silent.
While they have decided on approaching closer before completing their magical preparations, there is still the question of how they will make the approach. Will they try to sneak closer, or will they charge through the grass? Will Tishe' concentrate and maintain her scrying spell while they approach?
Falmar AC: 25 (26 with Sword ) HP 69/69 ( Aura of Courage, Stoneskin 50 min., Barkskin 50 min., Freedom of Movement ), Tuesday April 6th, 2010 11:52:13 PM
Scimitar drawn and ready Falmar looks around at the other three remaining of the Bloodpack. " How are we doing this ? As fast as possible ? I'll haste us when we get closer...then web the humanoids.hopefully that will slow them down a bit.".
Falmar waits for the signal.....
Tishe' (AC 20 HP 77 /77) (Mage Armor, Endure Elements, Unseen Servant, Stoneskin, Barkskin, See Invisible) Wednesday April 7th, 2010 12:44:18 PM
Tishe' keeps her concentration on her Clairaudience/Clairvoyance spell. "Falmar, if you keep Moxy circling the snake-taurs, and I keep my mind on my spell, we should be able to get fairly close without being seen."
Tishe' will lead the group forward until they get within 250 feet of the snake-taur camp.
"When we attack, I'll Wall of Thorns the largest group of snake-taur humanoid allies I can."
Intent At that point, Falmar can cast Haste, and Tishe' will cast one Summon Monster V spell. (1 round)
for Round 2 - the group can run down the open path created by the snake taurs (20 move for Trellus + 30 for Haste = 50 x4 = 200 feet), and hopefully without raising the alarm.

Stealthily, the Heroes Approach (DM JohnP) d20+7=25 ; Wednesday April 7th, 2010 11:33:50 PM
The Bloodpack stealthily approach the camp of the snake-taurs, moving as quietly as possible through the grass until they get close enough. Moxy doesn't report anything unusual to Falmar except that something doesn't look right with the carrion down below, "But I'd be happy to fly down and taste .... look more closely ... if you want, boss!"
Tishe' maintains her spell as she moves which slows her down. She continues to observe the humanoids breaking camp and the scaly-skinned bald humanoid comes of the longer grass. This leader begins speaking, even shouting, in a sibilant language that the wizard does not know. Perhaps as a result of this noise, the large snake-taur begins to stir. After a couple stretches, that creature begins to don its armor. Once it is completed, the large snake-taur calls to the scaly-skinned one and begins discussing something. The five humanoids have completed their preparations and stand ready to start trekking through the grass again.
The bound prisoner is still near the feet of the large snake-taur. Obviously, judging from the gestures, this prisoner is the subject of the conversation.
DM OOC - Those of you who are DM's know that we might get some new players. I'm dawdling a bit in case they wish to join this battle.

Buffed and Polished (DM JohnP) Thursday April 8th, 2010 11:20:43 PM
Tishe' and Trellus get close, just within 250 feet from the impromptu camp of the snake-taurs. While she watches Trellus casting his preparatory spells, Tishe' continues to receive sights and sounds from her scyring spell. The snake-taurs are clearly getting ready to leave. And, at the periphery of where her spell can see, Tishe' notices a disturbance in the grass as if some creature unaccustomed to the Sargrass is trying to force its way through.
DM OOC - 1. Did you want to sub for Tishe', or pause until next week? 2. Once we're going, I'll effectively start counting combat rounds with the casting of Trellus' first buff. This is mainly to make it a bit easier for MikeK to count duration.

When Trellus tells him to hold the Dwarven Cleric saves his spell. Quietly Yanosh waits, prays and readies his spells and weapons. When the time arrives he casts Devine power on himself and accepts the Stoneskin from Trellus. "Give me some time and I will cast my Summon Monster spell. I even have a shadow spell that is best used as a distraction. If I have time I can cast that one too."

Snake Fight (DM JohnP) - Round 4 d20+20=23 ; d20+19=22 ; d20+20=34 ; d20+19=28 ; Sunday April 11th, 2010 11:12:26 PM
Trellus begins his spellcasting, putting protective and strengthening spells upon himself. When he finishes casting his third spell, Tishe' begins summoning some assistance and Falmar prepares to cast a spell to increase their speed in battle.
When this is all said and done, the Bloodpack is ready to move. And move they do, charging up the trail towards the snake-taur camp. Tishe' is relatively light on her feet and Yanosh and Trellus manage to make too much noise. But they must have made some, though, since one of the snake-taurs shout a warning and the creatures move to prepare a defence.
The five humanoids arrange themselves to block the charging Bloodpack while the scaly skinned one moves behind and draws its weapons. The large snake-taur rumbles something and the five prisoners lurch awkwardly to their feet, clearly having been turned into some kind of undead.
The bound prisoner still lies upon the ground near the large snake-taur.
OOC - Even if Falmar doesn't join the battle, he has provided the Bloodpack with Haste.
Dorik only - Highlight to display spoiler: {Somewhere not too far up ahead, you can hear shouting in the sibilant speech of the snake creatures that have siezed your employers and their servants. Tishe' continues to relate what she sees until Trellus calls the halt. She has to stop concentrating in order to cast other spells, and the Clariraudience/Clairvoyance ends.
After using her Speak w Animals wand (ooc: round 1), Tishe' completes her summoning spell and causes 2 Celestial Lions to appear. "Stay with me until I tell you who to attack, my friends", she tells the golden cats. (ooc: appears at round 3). She then runs with her packmates to battle!
......................Round 4
When the Bloodpack runs up, Tishe' points to the humanoids. "Attack, my friends!" and let's the Celestial Lions do thier work. The large animals bound up and both attack the nearest foe; Opponent #1. They Charge in, Pounce and Smite, seeking to turn #1 from an opponent to a meal very quickly. Lion 1: Charge +2 attack,damage, -2 AC: Clawx2, Bite, Rakex2 15, 13, 20, 9, 26nat 20! She then moves forward and to the left until the mystic is partially hidden in the tall, tall Sargrass.
Tishe' looks to the plants around her. "Sargrass strong, make a thory barrier to protect the prisoner and damage the evil!" She casts Wall of Thorns, halving the thickness of the wall enables her to weave the thorny barrier between the bound prisoner and the snaketaurs, and up beneath the large snake-taur, the smiling scaly human, and most of the undead!

Trellus winces as the two Celestial Lions move to right where he was about to drop a spell. The cleric briefly considers taking them out anyway, but decides against it. He'll just turn his trapping spell into an area effect. The blond man casts a spell, bringing a circle of whirling steel blades up, right where three of the treadles are standing.

The first celestial lion charges and leaps, missing with both front claws but its jaws bite deeply into the creature. Then it strikes out with a rear claw, disemboweling the humanoid opponent. Humanoid 1 falls to the ground. DM Note -- rolled damage for bite from Lion #1
The second celestial lion charges the next closest humanoid 2, clawing the opponent once
Tishe' keeps moving ahead and ducks into corner of the tall grass. From there, she casts another spell and summons a thorny barrier that entraps several of the creatures. The scaly-skinned humanoid seems to be slightly injured while the thorns catch and hold four of the undead. The large snake-taur remains in the centre of the thorns.
Trellus casts a spell and a cascade of twinkling blades comes down upon three of the humanoids. A red haze briefly sprays around the area before scattered bits of the humanoids shower down upon their sole remaining companion and the celestial lions. Trellus isn't sure but the undead look like zombies.
Falmar charges ahead and targets the sole remaining humanoid and the scaly-skinned one with a bolt of lightning. Each of them manages to partly twist out of the way of the attack.
Yanosh casts a spell to summon a spiritual weapon to attack the large snake-taur. Before he moves to engage the enemy, the dwarven cleric is disappointed to see his spell simply disappear when it attacked the snake-taur. He relieves some of that frustration by cleaving the humanoid into two parts that land on the red-spattered ground.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The sole remaining zombie shuffles forward to attack Yanosh but cannot hit the dwarf.
The scaly-skinned humanoid forces its way out of the thorns before gesturing. The grass underfoot and everyone except Tishe' is now fighting their way forward through an Entangle spell. Entangle -- DC 14 to move at half speed
It's difficult to tell, but the large snake-taur is doing something inside the thorns.

The Bloodpack now hear someone running up behind them. Glancing back, Trellus sees a dwarf wearing a breastplate running to join the battle.

Trellus is unaffected by the Entangle spell and moves forward through it quickly. The cleric is nearly out of the area when he casts a spell to increase in size and battle might.

One lion is getting mauled and poison courses through its viens, but the fight is still there. The Celestial creature's damage reduction almost negates any attacks by the scaley human, and Lion #1 continues to maul, getting a paw on the humanoid and pulling it in to a Grapple!
Lion#2 moves to get to the humanoid herself, joining the Grapple and trying to rake open the humanoids vulnerable stomach.
With her lions and Trellus overwhelming the snakey human, Tishe' turns her attention to the snake-taur looming over the bound prisoner. Tishe' sends her lions forward to attack and grapple the scaly-skinned humanoid. Both of the summoned creatures manage to injure and grip the opponent. While this is happening, Tishe' uses a scroll to cast protective magics around the prisoner.
Dorik, the dwarf who has thundered up behind the Bloodpack, fires a missile at the snake-taur, wounding it slightly.
Falmar closes with the scaly-skinned humanoid and unleashes his stored spell. His sword bites deep but the magic does not affect the opponent. DM OOC -- I rolled spell resistance (d20+caster level) and got 11, not enough to affect this opponent.
Yanosh moves closer to the battle and uses a magical tattoo to aid himself and his companions.

The large snake-taur isn't distracted by the spine fired by Dorik and completes its spell. A huge, black and spined snake appears near Trellus and immediately attacks. It does not hit the cleric, however. Bite -- misses AC 13
The large snake-taur begins casting another spell, one that calls down a cloying, clinging mist upon the summoned creatures and some of the Bloodpack. The magic doesn't affect Trellus but Falmar, Yanosh and the two summoned lions are affected. The snake-taur then unlimbers a wicked looking morningstar.

Tishe' sole remaining lion managed to swipe at the snake-taur as it moved in front of the lion. The lion charges after the snake-taur but is unable to hit the creature. The theurge then casts a spell and rises into the air to look for other opponent. Tishe' sees no movement in the surrounding grass.
Falmar moves to assist the bound prisoner. When he reaches to heal the prisoner, the elven woman twists and glares up at him with a snarl on her lips. Obviously, she expected to be attacked rather than aided.

Lion#2 keeps attacking with claws and fang, but doesn't manage to get through the tough defense.
"I don't like the sound of THAT!", worries Tishe', but she is more worried that the heroes can't hit the Snake-taur. "The last time we fought someone we couldn't hit, it was because there were too many defensive spells. I wonder if now is similar?" Realizing that this opponent is a challenge that even Domi would be proud of Falmar expertly swings his scimitar aiming for the most seemingly vital spot on the snake-taur. Falmar moves to close with the snake-taur. As he does, the large morningstar loops down and smashes the bladesinger nearly into the turf. The Celestial Lioness continues her attack in flanking the Snake-taur with vigour, if not a lot of success.
Tishe' is getting worried. The Snake-taur is very well protected and still seems to have a great deal of confidence. "Your mistress holds no sway in the Sargrass", she blusters, "not now that he has been born!" The axe is nice, as is the Dwarf. But a bit of your magical help wouldn't hurt any. He says to those around him.
A common enemy is not what this is. Killing this monster is a common goal. A goal that is better for the Wold, and the Sargrass Plains.

Falmar gets into the swing of things, too, and slices twice into the side of the snake-taur. Then, with a final attack, the snake-taur topples to the ground.
COMBAT OVER
It changed in the blink of an eye, probably with that massive blow delivered by Trellus. Just a couple seconds ago, the Bloodpack seemed to be on the verge of being routed again. And then, their opponent is slowly bleeding into the turf at their feet. Across the clearing, the other snake-taurs and their allies have all expired. Only the prisoner, trapped within the spell cast by Tishe', remains alive.
Now is the time to re-group and get ready to return home. To question the prisoner. And to greet the newcomer.
DM Tanner - Introduction Monday May 3rd, 2010 1:13:47 AM
Hello Bloodpack!
We're going to break the action for just a moment to transition DMs. Let's start with an introduction. My name is Tanner Nielsen. I am a graduate student living in Louisville, Kentucky and have been playing D&D for close to 16 years now (right about when Planescape hit the scene). I'm married to a very supportive, non-gamer wife of 5 years and we have a 10-month-old son. I'm in my 3rd year of a doctoral program in clinical psychology with dreams of working as a clinical forensic examiner in the future (and, no, I can't read your mind). I'm looking forward to having some great experiences with this group and hope that you enjoy playing these adventures as much as I love preparing them.
As a DM, I love to reward inventiveness, strategy, and depth. I am believe in bonus xp for developing your PC's character (not just background!), creating novel solutions to problems, and coordinating party resources to overcome obstacles. I am also a big fan of flavor over crunch. What do I mean by that? For example, if you want a wondrous magic item to occupy a body slot other than what is listed in the DMG because it would be more in keeping with your character (say, a kilt of resistance +1 rather than a cloak of resistance +1), I will let it go without a penalty to the cost of the item. I will probably rule that it takes up the belt slot rather than the cloak slot yada yada yada because it isn't a distinct mechanical advantage and boosts roleplaying. Or if you want your spellcaster to scribe their spells on stone discs rather than scrolls, go for it. It will still cost the same gold and xp to make them, so as long as it is not abused, I fully support it. I will draw the line however, at shenanigans like using dominate person to make the king name you knights of the realm or using a decanter of endless water to flood a cave system and kill everything inside. If you have something you would like to try out that may seem outlandish, go ahead and pitch it to me.
One important note: I understand that from time to time it is necessary to miss a day of posting. Life gets in the way, you get distracted and forget, or any variety of things. It happens to everyone from time to time, and as long as it does not happen too often, is not really a problem. However, if you miss a day of posting during a battle, I will have your character take prudent action. I do not do this lightly and hope that it is never necessary. I have found that PCs missing posts during a battle slows play to a crawl unlike anything else. I can promise you, though, that my 'prudent action' will never place your PC in danger that they were not already in. To avoid this possibility, I thoroughly encourage you to state several rounds worth of intention every time you post. This may mean you need to change your intentions every round as the results of your actions take place, but it will also ensure that I never have to play sock-puppet with your character!
Now, to begin, we're going to take a survey. Why? Because I would like a snapshot of who you are and where you would like to see the game taken in the future. If there is anything that you feel strongly about changing in this game or about play with your previous DM (anything you wouldn't want put up on the boards) please feel free to send me some constructive, polite suggestions at <tanner.m.nielsen@gmail.com>.
First, please make a post listing the following (please number your responses, as well):
1. Your name. 2. A brief description of yourself and your experience gaming. 3. Your character's Name/Race/Class. 4. The total value of all your PC's gear and money. 5. A brief description of your character's physical appearance, personality, and primary motivations.
Next, please consider these gameplay styles and rank them according to what gameplay style you would prefer the most in the future (1) to what you would prefer the least in the future (6). Remember, you are ranking them, not scoring them, so each number from should only be used once. Just copy/paste this list into your response and add the appropriate numbers.
Hack n' Slash Mass Combat Stealth Mystery/Investigation Social Intrigue Exploration Noble Quest Other (please describe):
And last, but not least, please give me a wishlist for your character. Treasure, mounts, followers, social status, anything and everything you would like as a reward in the future. Go ahead, be silly if you like.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thank for your patience and cooperation!
Before we begin play, there is some maintenance I need everyone to attend to. It turns out the designing encounters for groups with level disparity is much more difficult for groups that are all the same level. So in the interest of everyone having an enjoyable experiencing and no one becoming frustrated because encounters are too difficult for some and too easy for others, I need everyone to make sure that their characters have at least 66,000 experience points. This will put your PC at level 12. Those who are above this number of experience points need not worry, you do not have to subtract from your total. If you are below this number, please raise yourself to this number.
I realize that some may feel cheated due to the arbitrary nature of magic hand-waving to ensure party balance. My intent is not to rob you of valuable time with your character or cheapen the successes of your group. Simply know that the extra power will be necessary to ensure your survival. For the future will be very deadly, indeed.
For now, please update your character sheets and relax. Feel free to ask any questions in addition to your regular posts. Tomorrow you can talk to the remaining prisoner and loot your fallen enemies!
2. 41 year old husband of 15 years and father of three daughters. I'm a 19-year veteran US Army officer currently assigned as commander of the Eastern Illinois University ROTC in Charleston, IL. (And I stop by Fort Knox a couple times per year). Leon must be reading my mind because I ALSO started gaming when I was 12 with the red box. My brothers Mike and Dan and I were the core of any group we played with, and we each took turns being DM. I stopped playing after college because I couldn't find a group that wasn't Monty Haul or just plain wierd. Tried playing 2ed by mail with my brothers until Mike invited me to the Wold in Jan 2004. I've been learning 3.5 edition and getting more involved in the Wold since.
3. Tishe' Bloodpack is currently a Wizard3/ Druid3/ Mystic Theruge6. Pending writing it into the story, I'm prepared to change her to a Witch7/ Spellweaver 5. Same personality. :-)
4. Total Value: 70,550 Equipment and magic + 7,449gp, 5sp coins + 1,162gp pearls and gems = 79,161gp 5sp
5. a. Appearance. At first glance, the woman wearing greens and tans looks like a guildswoman of modest means. The short woman keeps her shoulder-length wavy brown hair in a tail pulled away from her rather plain face and the light brown skin does nothing to craft a striking appearance. Not the kind of face or body to give anything more than a passing glance. Only thee brown eyes, how they seem to dance with warmth and carefully bridled enthusiasm, straining to get out and see the Wold show her as anything more.
b. Personality. Tishe' is a barely contained ball of energy that is focused on learning. No wonder or mystery is too insignificant for her attention, and often her concentration can be redirected by giving her a new piece of information. Her questions can drive people to distraction, and she sometimes forgets that others aren't as interested in learning for learning's sake as she is. She is less aware of personalities and intrigue around her, and treats everyone in the same cordial, but distracted manner, sort of like an absent-minded professor. That is not to say she doesn't care about other people. Tishe' has a very strong protective instinct (don't call it motherly!). Between her upbringing and training, she has little tolerance for bullies. Tishe' had always been overshadowed by more beautiful and 'womanly-talented' sisters, so it is not surprising she doesn't think much of natural beauty nor traditional roles for women.
c. Motivation. Learning and Protecting. Her curiosity and sense of duty (along with little personal social skill or interest) keeps her from settling down.
6. Gameplay Styles. ...7) Hack n' Slash ...5) Mass Combat (assuming this is like a war?) ...3) Stealth ...4) Mystery/Investigation ...6) Social Intrigue ...1) Exploration ...2) Noble Quest
7. Wishlist for Tishe'.
- Set OddHolme up as a viable trading/ living community in the Sargrass. Tishe' thinks the Bloodpack and refugees are going to need a couple traders with Druidwood ships to start making OddHolme a port of call for this to work.
- Learn how to effectively use the Portal system discovered at OddHolme (if this is linked into a trade route or getting to other cities like Hook City great) At a minimum, it could be relagated to role-playing only and have portals to Catacombs, Star Mages Guild, and Woldian League of Adventurers Headquarters.
- Find the headquarters of the slave trade on the Sargrass and end it. In the past, the Bloodpack has met the Barons, Oglians, and these Snake-taurs; all of which are slavers. Why is Sargrass such a hotbed for slaves? Can we do something to make it safer?
- Find out why her parents were exiled from Rattledam. From family story and her experience of the Rattledam monks, she has pieced together that her mother was born in Rattledam, and her father was a wandering bard. They fell in love and then were exiled from Rattledam, their memories wiped away of what happened or how to get back. When Rattledam was destroyed, one of the refugees who came to OddHolme is a cousin of her mother, but Tishe' hasn't yet had time to cultivate the relationship to learn more.
- Tishe's always been facinated by the stars. Travelling there would be soooo wonderful!
1. Mike Knotts
2. 43 years old with a wife who humors my D&D jones and three kids who've yet to get involved in it. I work in the IT department of a manufacturing company in Columbus, Ohio. I also played the Red Box version. I joined the Wold in November 2002, and my character is one of the founding members of Bloodpack. I liked it so much, I got my two brothers to join, and now we rule the Wold! BWAHAHAHAHAHA.....er sorry.
3. Trellus, human cleric of Domi
4. Wow, uh, I'll get back to you on that, although the Wold is generous, and as the longest run pc, I imagine he's got the most goodies of the group.
5. A brief description of your character's physical appearance, personality, and primary motivations. Appearance Trellus' blond hair is cut is a severe flat-top style that grazes the top of his scalp. He has a clean-shaven, squarish face, set with very dark blue eyes, thin-lipped mouth, and an angular nose that leans a bit to the right. He wears silvery chain armor and carries a silvery heavy shield, both are composed of mithral. At his side is a heavy mace. His armor is covered by a long, blood red vestment inscribed with silver runes and glyphs clearing marking his as a devout follower of Domi. A bone stud earring, shield shaped, and also inscribed with a hammer is in his left ear. A blood red platinum ring adorns his right ring finger. While Trellus has an average build, his body is muscular and well defined.
Personality Trellus is generally friendly and easygoing. His speech is heavily laced with the slang of his home of Rattledam, and he has a kind word (usually "Dude!") for everyone he meets. With an adventurous spirit, Trellus is willing to try just about anything once, although as a cleric of Domi, he does have his limits. He takes his pleasure in his friends and in hard work, often volunteering for any back breaking labor he can find.
The young man is the de-facto leader of the Bloodpack. He is extremely protective of his packmates, and will rush to their defense heedless of the consequences. He has also developed a bit of a swagger concerning the group's ability to deal with anything the Wold throws at them. No matter what the situation, Trellus is confident the Bloodpack can pull it out in the end.
3- Hack n' Slash 6- Mass Combat 7- Stealth 4- Mystery/Investigation 5- Social Intrigue 2- Exploration 1- Noble Quest
Wish List - Trellus wants to build a Temple of Domi at OddHolme (with cohorts/followers pretty much running the place). He also envisions OddHolme becoming the principle power in the Sargrass - a beacon of goodness, as it were. And he would LOVE to someday be able to walk into Rattledam, and make it very clear to Galafar and the rest of the Monks that they are no longer the big dogs on the block.
DM Tanner Tuesday May 4th, 2010 12:26:45 PM
The dark cleric lies broken on the sun-baked earth. The wounds along his body make wet, sucking noises as he lets out his death rattle. His eyes lose focus and stare into eternity. You gaze about to find that no obvious threat persists, and the only noise you hear is your own labored breathing and the sighing of the wind. Looking about, all is still but for the last captive who quivers wild-eyed in her magical sphere.
Regaining your senses as the heat of battle wears off, you see that there are corpses to loot, new allies to greet, and the remaining prisoner to address.
Gathering the possessions of the fallen snaketaur, you find:
1 finely-made morningstar 1 finely-made dull suit of chainmail 1 finely-made heavy metal shield 1 wand 1 finely-made black suit of breastplate 1 finely-made pair of gloves 1 finely-made scimitar 1 finely-made kukri 1 finely-made shiny suit of chainmail 1 stout-looking composite longbow 902 gold coins a small assortment of gems
OOC: In the future, when an item has yet to be identified through an Appraisal check, bardic lore, or use of identify, I will use phrases such as "finely-made" or "stout-looking" to indicate items that are obviously masterwork or magical. Terms such as "dull" or "shiny" may indicate if an item is steel, mithral, or some other material.
The rescued prisoner is a woman in her early 30's with straw-blonde hair and hazel eyes. Her movements are furtive and tense. She speaks with trepidation, "Are, are they gone? Are they really gone?" Looking about and seeing the carcasses of the snaketaur, she lets out a deep sigh and covers her face with her hand as she lightly cries, "Thank you. Oh heavens, thank you! I thought for certain that I was going to die. They killed all of the others. We thought we were going to be sold into slavery, but they didn't seem interested in money or trade. After they captured us, they, they *branded* us on the back of the neck. Like we were just cattle. I couldn't see what it was, we thought it was just a trading mark. It's been days but it still hurts so much. Please, I know you've done so much already, could you heal it for me? It throbs and aches to my bones." She pulls her hair forward over her shoulder to reveal a crude, burnt scar on the nape of her neck.
"Please, can you do anything? They put it on the other prisoners, but they... they died before they had time to say anything about the pain."
Trellus stares down at the dead snake-taur a couple more seconds, the rush of melee combat still coursing through his system. "Who's laughing now, treadle?" he asks the body.
The crying of the prisoner bring the cleric back to the here and now. "Tishe, please use my wand to heal everyone up," he asks as he moves behind the woman to look at her back. "Some kinda spell, probably," he murmurs, eyeing the symbol. [Knowledge Religion - 14, Spellcraft - 34 (roll shoulda been +16)]
Tishe' notes the strange scar on the woman's neck and goes to heal it herself with a Cure Light Wounds spell.
She nods as Trellus mentions moving camp from the carnage, already Rapke are sure to smell the blood. She helps to hustle the group to a new campsite area before worrying about the items Falmar has gathered. OOC: Tishe' is now a Witch/Spellweaver. Feel free to update your PC sheet.
Tishe' (AC 21 HP 75 /75) Thursday May 6th, 2010 8:27:11 AM
Tishe' lays in the Grass, her eyes blinking and unfocused as she tries to gather her wits about her after the vision. "Start with the basic patterns", she says out loud in a small voice.
Her skin is the same deeply tanned color, but disfiguring black warts are here and there around her body, and her nose is leaning to one side. Her face is still the pleasant oval, her hair a wavy brown. Although she can't see them, Tishe' knows her eyes are also the same, a warm brown filled with vibrant energy.
Looking down, she notes that while her clothes are the same, her equipment is different. Her Staff of Fire lays in the grass, but her forearm has a small dark wooden buckler strapped to it. Rings and other magical effects are about her person, but the satchel that had always carried Wart, her horned toad familiar is gone! In its place, a small iron cauldron sits, and Tishe' feels she can understand what the pot feels. "Wart!", she sighs in relief, "you are still here, though slightly changed!"
Thinking inside, Tishe' finds the biggest changes. "All my spells have changed!", she squeaks with uncertainty and , well, and wonder.
And over it all is a feeling like there is Someone there, a Presence that was never there before. "I can feel Sargrass", she tells the others, "I am bonded with the Power."
Trellus(SR 25, DR 10/evil, DR 10/adamantine, AC 31, hp 102/116, Stoneskin, Delay Poison, Fdm Movement, M. Vestment(x2), GrMWpn, Bulls Str, Shield Faith, Haste, Righteous Might) Thursday May 6th, 2010 9:36:58 AM
Trellus shakes his head to clear the vision from his mind, looking about he's startled to find himself both prone and sweating profusely. The blond man takes several moments to collect himself. "That totally bites grass," he grumbles softly.
Then he spots Tishe. "Dude! Are you shady?" "I can feel Sargrass", Tishe tells the others, "I am bonded with the Power."
"ooookay," Trellus responds carefully. "Uh, is that a good thing?"
Still watching the new Tishe somewhat apprehensively, the cleric returns to the ex-prisoner, and again checks her back for the symbol. [using same rolls from last time - Knowledge Religion - 14, Spellcraft - 34]
The blond man raises an arm to forestall any one else from approaching. "Could we not cast any more spells on this thing, please? I don't need any more visions of my own execution right now."
The Bloodpack has awoken from their nightmares to find that no lasting harm has been done, at least physically. The rescued prisoner still lies insensate. The grasslands are oddly still, as though the creatures of the wild have shied away from the presence felt by the party members.
You find yourself with little to guide you, other than a vague but firm warning. The sky is quickly darkening, however, and night will come soon. Will the Bloodpack return to Oddholme now, during the night and depleted of their spells, or wait for morning?
"But should we not prepare and perhaps see if Dorik and the unconscious lady wants to accompany us or go there own way?"
DM Tanner - Extra Post Friday May 7th, 2010 6:02:14 PM
OOC: Since Skizzie is currently busy in real life, I'm going to have him tag along and assist the Bloodpack. I designed the encounters for a party of that size, so I don't want you overwhelmed. He'll be the strong, silent-type for a little while. The woman is still unconscious and probably wouldn't want to be left to fend for herself in the wilderness. So for the purposes of planning, consider Dorik and the prisoner to be willing to go wherever you decide to go.
Tishe' nods, and calls the Bloodpack, the unconscious girl, and Dorik the dwarf to form a circle, holding hands. She makes sure she gives Falmar enough time to gather and distribute the looted treasures.
When all is ready, Tishe' calls upon her pact with the Sargrass to cast Shadow Walk upon the group. The grasses about them blur and the group stands in an area of grayness, the real Wold seemingly indistinct. "And now, we walk", she says, hurrying through the shadows back towards OddHolme. "Stay close!"
Tishe' will try to lead the Bloodpack and allies to the sandy spot in front of the main entrance to OddHolme.
Marching through the gray void, you feel the impression of movement. Not necessarily that you are moving, but that the world is moving past you, and rather swiftly at that. After what seems to be an eternity, yet no time at all, ethereal mist melts and you stand upon solid ground once more. As the shimmer of magic fades from your view, you look about to get your bearings. While most of the horizon is the same level, uniform grasslands that are so familiar, in one direction is something very different.
Oddholme is burning. A thick column of gray-black smoke mars the sky, fed by smaller plumes of smoke escaping from cracks in the dome. Shouts and screams of terrified town-folk, hoarse whispers at this distance, are carried on the wind. You are approximately 100 feet from the outer edge of the dome. You can see small clumps of people fleeing from the city in all directions. Some carry belongings in their arms or lashed to their backs, while a lucky few race with makeshift stretchers or horsecarts.
One family is quickly approaching towards you. The mother carries a babe in her arms and the father is pulling a handcart behind him. Their eyes are filled with obvious terror.
"No", the disfigured woman breathes, a barely audible counterpart to Yanosh's bellow of rage. She casts through her memory and sadly looks at Trellus. "I can't quench the fire and can't make any water", she says with tears in her eyes.
Reaching into her Pants O Plenty and looking for anything that will help, a wooden dowel slams into her hand. Tishe' pulls and is amazed to find ... a broom? It wiggles in her hand, and the Witch's modified memory understands. Tishe' jumps astride the broom and it takes off into the air as she looks around for any enemies or causes of the fire.
Tishe' calls her observations to her packmates.
"Light," Trellus growls. Instinctively, the blond man supresses his emotions and looks about for a way to resolve the issue. First thread, information.
With both Tishe and Yanosh already taking off, Trellus strides up to the approaching family. He doesn't immediately recognize them, but figures with his surcoat, they at least know who he is. "What happened," the cleric asks. "Where's Murdock?"
DM Tanner - Extra Post Monday May 10th, 2010 3:17:09 PM
OOC: Hey, guys! Apparently there was a thing or two I didn't hear about prior to taking over as DM. It's always crazy during a DM migration and I suppose there was some miscommunication between me and JohnP. I edited my post to reflect the unique nature of Oddholme and its architecture. Please carry on as before. Thanks!
Realizing that he has almost no way of stopping a fire, Falmar rushes to the closest entrance hoping to either find the source of the flames, or help some of the people escape.
Who would do this to refugees ! These people have been running from one disaster to another !
Falmar sends Moxy aloft to see what he can see. Spot :20
