Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells d20+3=7 ; d20+4=11 ; Thursday July 22nd, 2010 5:51:40 PM
Bosk hears Mara's comment and nods his head and takes a few minutes to checkout the workers, making sure they have the proper tools and no unnecessary weapons and tries to make sure their motives are legitimate.
Actions ====== Sense Motive = 7 Spot = 4
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) Thursday July 22nd, 2010 6:04:10 PM
Zeoll's smile is wide as he hears the new person speak in Tauric, the language closest to his own Wemic tongue. "Hail and well spoken, Miss Mara," he says, with no trace of his usual accent, since he is speaking a language that was designed to fit a mouth with teeth like his own. Although the word "Miss" does not signify a single woman as Zeoll says it, but more implies a greeting to a young hunter from another clan, little known to the speaker, but who has shown expertise and so earned respect.
He continues to Mara in Tauric, saying, "Fear not, for if his crafting is substandard, we shall make him rip it all down and do it again."
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Thursday July 22nd, 2010 10:18:50 PM I'm not familiar with that language, is that Tauric? I've always enjoyed studying foreign tongues, but never had an opportunity to pick up that one. Could you teach me a little when we have some spare time?
Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) Thursday July 22nd, 2010 11:20:39 PM
Mara smiles and continues in Tauric, "Thank you. The family farm is, or was, near the grasslands of the Lion-folk. It was beautiful country. Wide open and free. We traded vegetables and pottery for scouting reports of the area and the occasional deer carcass. I even had a beaded necklace my hus-." Her smile fades, "But enough of that, what kind of shop is this pack trying to open?"
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Friday July 23rd, 2010 11:41:04 AM
ooc: Mara, are you referencing the Sargrass Plains / Blood Pack?
Bosk replies to Mara, continuing in Tauric. We acquired this shop a couple weeks ago when the previous owner's brain was liberated from this skull and have since tracked down his murder and uncovered cult and conspiracy in the process. The shop is junk shop filled with odds and ends and some low quality weapons. We don't expect much in profit, but it provides us with a safe place to stay. Mudtown is not exactly known for it's hospitality.
Bosk will also ask Gil to reinforce the doors so that a charging half orc cannot crash through.
ooc: It sounds like there were no objections to group loot paying for the locks. Should we get 2 100g good locks, one for each door or 600g for amazing locks?
ooc -- DM Jim Friday July 23rd, 2010 6:04:57 PM
sorry for not posting as much as I normally do, but I'm in heated discussions with the PTB's about my other character and what ramifications it may have on that character and on the Wold house rules, so my mind has been elsewhere.
I will post today and I will address your questions, all of them, if I don't please don't hesitate to call me on them.
Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) Friday July 23rd, 2010 6:35:40 PM
ooc: The Sargrass Plains are right outside Hook City, right? I saw this map. Am I mixing up geography? My origin was going to be a homestead on the plains. Is this problematic for the campaign setting?
Mara purses her lips and taps her check with her finger and she looks about the shop. She continues in Tauric, "You know, given the... shall we say, 'violent proclivities?' Of most of Mudtown's resident's, a commercial security company would certainly be in high demand. Things like retrieving stolen merchandise or defending against thugs and gangs. I bet there isn't a store in the whole district who wouldn't clamor for our services. Especially when we charge rock-bottom prices in the interest of community enrichment. Those who cannot afford our services could sign over a stake in their company in exchange in lieu of currency."
Maikill HP (33) 24/39, AC 17 -5 Con. from POISON Friday July 23rd, 2010 7:22:19 PM "I heard of this business before. If they no want our help, we maybe persuade them? That what someone already try when I first come Mudtown. Think his name was Lenny. Not good business, makes people mad."
Maikill stares at the strange newcomer, not knowing quite what to think. She bested three men in combat while two of their group did nothing. Now she has moved in, paid to have a room built, and now has ideas of how to run a racketeering business.
"Did Lenny send you? Oh wait, Lenny is dead. Maybe his kin send you?"
Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) Friday July 23rd, 2010 7:41:52 PM
Mara holds up her hands, "Now, now! No one said anything about racketeering! For starters, we wouldn't force our services onto anyone. Second, we charge very modest rates in exchange. Third, we don't break people's legs if they owe us money. We provide security and retrieval, not 'give us money or we'll burn your store down.' See the difference?"
Maikill HP (33) 24/39, AC 17 -5 Con. from POISON Friday July 23rd, 2010 9:33:28 PM "Oh, I guess that different. Maybe I can make enough money to go away, buy farm. Mudtown not nice place, you should have stayed on farm. Farm better."
The Shop -- DM Jim Saturday July 24th, 2010 3:41:34 AM
Cleaning up after Roy reminded Ransy of the early days when he was a novice tasked for such things. He did not miss those days of "paying his dues", but still had fond memories of the comraderie he shared with his fellow novices who also shared the less than desired chores. Studying Roy carefully, the paladin determined Roy was never going to get fully back to who he was without magical help. Maybe he might get a little better, maybe a little worse, it was really up to the gods to determine. However, what he did know was that Roy was going to require a fulltime nursemaid or he would suffer from lack of care.
Coming back down to the others and still a little sore from the cramp sleeping conditions (no overnight healing), Ransy hears Gil speaking loudly to Zeoll. Gil was a patient man and when Zeoll began speaking slowly and quite slurridly he knew what his affliction was. He had an aunt in Heranmar that was deaf and spoke similarly.
"I DON'T BUILD GARDENS, ONLY WOODEN STRUCTURES--BUILDINGS. I CAN BUILD YOUR GAZEBO AND FENCE OUT BACK, THERE IS ENOUGH ROOM THERE FOR IT. 200 GOLD." Gil put up his hands and signified the amount with two fingers and then making two zeroes in quick succession. Bosk sensed the man knew what he was talking about and Ransy had already checked out Gil and all his men to see if they were evil, and thankfully none appeared to be so.
Hook City and Geography -- DM Jim Saturday July 24th, 2010 3:47:17 AM
ooc: Victor/Mara, the map on the webpage is old, Hook City moved completely last year. So you're probably far removed from your family, stuck here in Mudtown. The area south of Hook City where the Sargrass was, is now an endless ocean. and to the North, is now West, is the Gateway Downs. I've lost my link to the new map, but then again I think it's only for DM's. I'll try to draw something up for a better understanding of it later for you.
Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) Saturday July 24th, 2010 10:23:32 AM
ooc: So referencing this ^^^, Mara is far removed from her homestead on the plains. Gotcha, and thanks.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Sunday July 25th, 2010 2:19:33 PM
Beriothian turns to Sanji to talk. By the way, do you remember hearing any rumors about further disappearances in Mudtown the last several days?
ooc: I am fine with amazing locks if everyone else is.
Sanji -- DM Jim Sunday July 25th, 2010 3:10:34 PM "Nothing more than the usual," Sanji replies, then thinks about it, "Maybe that means it's been occuring for so long now that it seems commonplace."
Maikill HP (33) 24/39, AC 17 -5 Con. from POISON Sunday July 25th, 2010 10:07:07 PM "I still need to go find someone who can heal poison. Bosk, you still going to come with me? Tell me if they good healer or no?"
Maikill gets his gear again and prepares to go out.
Zeoll and Ransy quick like Monday July 26th, 2010 9:06:18 AM
Zeoll agrees to the gazebo and fence, and says he'll do the garden.
Ransy is worried about Ray and not sure what to do with him. He is doomed without magic we don't have. Is this ghost idea a good one to help keep Roy alive? At the least, the paladin wants to know if those ghosts are evil.
[OOC: Me, I vote to figure out the tower next. But IC, we should spend at least a day looking for Valla, right?]
Zeoll and Ransy both say they wish they could help Maikill.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Monday July 26th, 2010 1:21:36 PM
Feeling that Zeoll is probably one of the more intimidating member's in the party due to his size, Bosk gives him the money to pay Gil before heading out with Maikill. While out Bosk will ask about getting Roy healed and if the group wishes get the wands identified.
ooc: I gave Zeoll the money because I was not sure if we pay up front, when the work is complete, or half now half later. I also need to know if Bosk was able to determine what the wands do, so that I know if they need to be identified in town.
Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) Monday July 26th, 2010 5:58:14 PM
ooc: I'm the new guy, so whatever you guys want to do.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Monday July 26th, 2010 10:08:46 PM Under the circumstances I say we start looking for someone that can help Roy asap. I also would like to stop buy the Catacombs when you get the wands identified and pick up some masterwork tools. We should also make a quick stop at the inn and ask our friend the barkeeper if he's heard any rumors about Valla. Beriothian, having had a chance to shower and remove his disguise, gathers his equipment and and prepares to head out with Bosk's group.
ooc: Gil said half now half upon completion
Gil, healing and identify -- DM Jim Monday July 26th, 2010 10:59:31 PM "GREAT, THANK YOU MR. TAUR, SIR!" Gil says to Zeoll, whom he thinks is deaf. "I'll have all the rooms done today, and the gazebo and fence tomorrow." Then once more to Zeoll, "TOMORROW GAZEBO AND FENCE WILL BE DONE, OKAY?" Nodding his head for agreement and sure he receives it, he instructs his men to get to work and they immediately snap to it.
The noise is constant, but the progress is swift.
Bosk, Maikill and beri head off for Hook City proper since there are no healers here in Mudtown that can take care of Roy's condition or Maikill's poison. Once inside thanks to their Writ of Passage, the trio find a healer's office on the mainstreet. His prices seem fair compared to the rest, and he tells the trio that he can get rid of Maikill's affliction for 280gp. For Roy, based upon what you've told him, it would be 660gp.
Identification at the Catacombs is a standard 110gp per item.
Maikill HP (33) 24/39, AC 17 -5 Con. from POISON Tuesday July 27th, 2010 12:29:12 AM
Maikill digs out the 280 gp and hands them over to the healer. He sideways glance at Beri shows he is a bit upset about the needle still.
"Here, I like be healed from poison please. Heal is expensive, but I guess if you no have health you no have anything. Roy sound very expensive, you think he afford that?"
Master Galbraith -- DM Jim Tuesday July 27th, 2010 12:54:26 AM
The healer takes the money and sets it aside and begins his prayer to restore Maikill to his full potential.
The feeling in Maikill's hand, where he was poisoned, begins to feel strange--almost like a worm working it's way back out of his skin. Soon however the half-orc is feeling much better and the effects of the poison completely gone (you may reinstate your Con stat to full and HP's.)
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) Tuesday July 27th, 2010 6:51:02 AM
Zeoll pumps the man's hand, says thank-you, and agrees.
"Now I just need a quiet place to say my morrning prrayerrs," he says. He goes a looking for such a place.
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 25 /35 [sub by Cayzle] Tuesday July 27th, 2010 6:51:54 AM
Ransy stays to supervise the workers. He also checks in on Roy from time to time.
Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) Tuesday July 27th, 2010 7:33:40 AM
With all the hustle and bustle around her, Mara spends her day doing some stance and form exercises with her guisarme in the garden.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Tuesday July 27th, 2010 10:15:00 AM
ooc: I assume that means Bosk couldn't figure out the wands.
Still waiting on feedback about the wands. Do we identify them or cast random spells hoping for the best?
Maikill HP (33) 24/39, AC 17 -5 Con. from POISON Tuesday July 27th, 2010 10:58:51 AM
ooc: identify them, can't activate them if you don't know how.
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Tuesday July 27th, 2010 11:19:08 AM
Maikill flexes his hand and a big grin appears on his face.
"You good healer. Maybe you want join our group? We rescue people sometimes, not much money in rescue but it good thing. Sometime we not do so good though."
a sad expression comes over Maikill as he thinks of the child he threw into the pit.
Cesar - HP 38/38, AC 21 Tuesday July 27th, 2010 11:36:00 AM
OOC: sorry if I didn't post in the last days, but I'm at the end of my research program and have to finish everything by the end of the week. I promise I'll try and post every time I have the opportunity!
IC:
"I believe we should search for Valla: we don't have any news of him since the Madrigal and I am starting to get a little worried... maybe the tower is the right place to start... "
Master Galbraith -- DM Jim Tuesday July 27th, 2010 3:35:39 PM "Thank you but no, I've no desire to go adventuring again as I did in my youth." Galbraith seems to be a genuine type of guy from the trio's first impression, "Now, if there isn't anything else, I hope to see you again concerning your friend Roy, the sooner the better that he receives treatment, if not from me, then from someone."
A quiet place -- DM Jim Tuesday July 27th, 2010 3:43:04 PM
Zeoll searches in vain somewhere in the shop for a moments peace, but can find none--until he finds the root cellar. With a lantern lit nearby, Zeoll finds the cellar to be devoid of much of anything except a few empty crates and some packing straw. It is a little musty with no air circulating through the area, but it's a good 40'x40' space directly under the shop and it's foundation seems strong. With a little work, this place could be turned into a library, lab or other workspace where peace and quiet would be required.
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Tuesday July 27th, 2010 5:53:15 PM
Maikill nods as Galbraith speaks.
"Well, this Roy guy isn't exactly a friend of mine. He is the one who gave me that arrow wound. Trouble with having a paladin around is you can never just leave someone wounded to lie around and either recover or not as the gods see fit. I will leave it up to the others regardless."
Master Galbraith -- DM Jim Tuesday July 27th, 2010 6:19:25 PM
Galbraith nods and shrugs his shoulders, "Ya know what they say, what goes around comes around."
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Tuesday July 27th, 2010 8:19:30 PM I personally would rather have let Roy die. His actions, or rather inaction, caused two children to suffer a horrible fate.
ooc: I really don't think Valla would have left the bar in the middle of combat to visit the tower where he would most likely be instantly possessed again.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Tuesday July 27th, 2010 9:07:42 PM
If no one objects by tomorrow, Bosk will stop at the catacombs to get them identified of the way out of hook city (Can you RP this to speed up the game. The actual catacombs may take a while). Also, if Maikill and Beri wish to check out the tower then Bosk will insist on taking an hour to pray to Gargul first.
Just a though about the tower, perhaps we could start by appeasing the ghosts. Maybe we could bring them some fresh tea and leave it just inside the door? If nothing else, perhaps they will be less agressive if we ever do have to face them.
Roy -- DM Jim Tuesday July 27th, 2010 9:55:39 PM "Haw Ire Em"
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Tuesday July 27th, 2010 10:14:42 PM
ooc: I think it would be much more productive for Maikill and I to gather information from local bars than to check out the tower. Also, doesn't Valla have a woman in town he spends a lot of time with? We should probably start with her.
BTW, I think James just wants to see what those girls will do to me if I'm dumb enough to step inside that tower.
I want to see what those girls will do to you too :) DM JIM
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 25 /35 [sub by Cayzle] Tuesday July 27th, 2010 11:33:46 PM
Ransy takes careof Roy, chats with the workers, and keeps an eye on things.
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) Tuesday July 27th, 2010 11:35:02 PM
Zeoll uses his quiet basement space to study and meditate. Once his spell energies are all charged up, he'll check out the workers and wait for the others to get back.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Tuesday July 27th, 2010 11:46:52 PM
ooc: step in...pushed in...whats the difference?
Cesar - HP 38/38, AC 21 Wednesday July 28th, 2010 10:10:05 AM
Seeing the others getting ready for some time, Cesar will find a secluded little place where he can pray in peace and muse over what has happened the previous day.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Wednesday July 28th, 2010 10:29:47 AM
ooc: Never mind, it was Xeron that visited Lola the Red
The Shop -- DM Jim Wednesday July 28th, 2010 2:37:59 PM
Finding the same secluded spot away from all the noise of construction, Cesar prays near Zeoll's studying, not bothering the Taur in the least in this large open space. Once both are done they rejoin the others upstairs and find that they have the whole day ahead of them as it's only about 8am in the morning.
Sanji asks those present, "So, whats next for the group? I should be able to reopen the shop here in a couple of days when all of your rooms are built, but what are you guys going to be doing? And what about Mara here? She's paid for a room, is she joining the group too?"
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) And Ransy because Cayzle is too busy to make two posts today Wednesday July 28th, 2010 7:47:56 PM
Zeoll suggests just spending some time looking for Valla in Mudtown. "I can see what news I can dig up. I'm not half bad at that."
Ransy offers to stay with Roy. Someone has to watch him.
OOC: After the Identifies are done, will there be loot dispersal? I paid for my garden/gazebo on credit, so far as I can tell.
Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) Wednesday July 28th, 2010 8:12:40 PM
Mara politely watches the activities of the group members from a distance, not wishing to be a bother to new acquaintances.
The Shop -- DM Jim Thursday July 29th, 2010 1:19:43 PM
Sanji asks, somewhat peeved, "Hello, am I talkin to myself here?"
Identify -- DM Jim Thursday July 29th, 2010 3:08:06 PM
ooc: If you want to bypass the catacombs board and have these wands identified, just let me know, pay the 110gp each and I'll give you the info.
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Thursday July 29th, 2010 5:16:03 PM
ooc: yes we want to bypass the catacombs, we will give you the money from group loot, tell us about the wands.
Maikill walks away from the healer, not sure about his words "what goes around comes around". He knows he has killed many by his axe, and he knows someday he will probably be killed the same way. Of course what goes around comes around, why did he bother to say something so obvious? He mulls over the words for a long time while Bosk finds a place to pray.
He looks over at Beri as he waits "I think we should wait for Bosk then go back to shop. I not go into tower, not now anyway. If Valla in Hook City then he okay, but I don't know how he get here without papers. If he anywhere, he in Mudtown."
Maikill will try to hustle the other two back to the shop as soon as possible.
Identify -- DM Jim Thursday July 29th, 2010 6:13:50 PM
With a quick stop to the Catacombs and pay 110gp for each wand, the trio of Bosk, Maikill and Beri learn that one is a Wand of Fireballs (CL5) with 5 charges left, and the other is a Wand of Contingency, also with 5 charges left.
Looking for a place to pray inside Hook City is scarce and the only places that can be found is an inn with rooms for rent--by the day only, which would cost 100gp. (stay for 100gp, or go back to the shop, let me know).
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) Thursday July 29th, 2010 6:37:35 PM
Contingency, the 6th level spell? Whoa! Normally wands are limited to 4th level spells! Really? How much did the catacombs say it was worth?
Later ... my calculations put a 5 charge wand like this at a value of just under 5,000 gp, not counting any factor for extreme rarity.
Yeah, it's basically a fate item because the mindflayer used Contingency spells alot, but wasn't a spellcaster. It can be sold locally for 5000gp to the right buyer. DM Jim
Sept 1 Update: This post was changed to Not Private to make the details about the wand more clear.
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) d4+1=5 ; d20+6=26 ; Thursday July 29th, 2010 7:30:04 PM
Zeoll has spent 1d4+1 hours gathering info on the whereabouts of Valla. The 1d4+1 is a 5, ugh. His check at +6 is a 26! Nat 20! No regrets on that 5 hours now! If there's a clue to be had, our liontaur has sniffed it out!
When Zeoll hears what the wands are, he is surprised. "Wowsy, as the liontaurr cubbies say. That's a sweet wand, a Wand of Contingency. I've been arround the block a time orr two, hearrd some tales, and that's a special one. Most wand makerrs couldn't make one of those if they trried!"
He thinks for a minute. "I bet the Catacombs would only give you -- what the humans call 'book value.' For a thing as rrarre as this, I bet we could get morre frrom a local buyerr, especially in such a magical city. The rright collectorr would pay thrrough the nose!"
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 25 /35 [sub by Cayzle] Thursday July 29th, 2010 7:34:25 PM
Ransy has been taking care of Roy. While he does so he invites Mara to join him and tell her tale. He mentions his own background. You get the idea he is a local boy who has his heart in the right place and managed to put some good luck to clever use, getting apprenticed to a noble paladin.
When he hears about the special wand, he says, "But isn't it powerful? Maybe we should save it for Good use?"
But when he hears how much it will cost to heal Roy, he adds, "Then again, we could use the gold to get Roy fixed up. We owe him that much."
Cesar - HP 38/38, AC 21 Thursday July 29th, 2010 7:37:49 PM
After his moment of recollection, Cesar approaches Ransy: "I can help you tending Roy, while we wait for the others to arrive".
Take 20 on Heal = 27
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 25 /35 [sub by Cayzle] Thursday July 29th, 2010 7:40:13 PM
"Thanks, friend Cesar. Here, sit with Mara and me as we tell our tales of would-be heroes!"
He grins to show he is not serious about calling himself, just a tavern lad not long ago, a hero.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Thursday July 29th, 2010 8:24:53 PM I agree Maikill, let's not go to the tower. I don't think Valla would go there alone, even if he did have access to the city.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Thursday July 29th, 2010 11:25:46 PM
Bosk will retutn to Mud Town
Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) Friday July 30th, 2010 1:11:22 PM
Mara leans her guisarme against the corner of the room and takes a seat beside the jovial adventurers. She smiles her scar-crooked smile. "My story? Well, darling, there isn't much too it. After the lands shifted, our prairie home was flung from within a day's journey of Hook City to deep in the Sargrass Plains. They never tell you that little tidbit when they are advertising for colonists, if you were wondering. Took a few weeks to figure out what had happened, and by then it was too late to do anything but learn to live with it. We spent many years near the lion-folk, growing food on our little plot of land and raising our family. It was simple and happy, which it usually the way it goes." Mara's smile drops a fraction, "Nothing lasts, though. After I left, I put the militia training of my youth to work. I've been working as a caravan guard and would-be mercenary for the past three years. My last job ended here, in Mudtown. It was too late in the evening to find an inn when my last employer discharged me, so I just snoozed near the street. When I woke up, I discovered some rude rapscallions trying to steal an honest man's horse. That is what finds me here now."
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Friday July 30th, 2010 1:41:37 PM
After returning to Mud Town Bosk will find a place to pray. He will then try to get everyone together and head to the bar with the Mindflayer's head and try to collect the reward.
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 25 /35 [sub by Cayzle] Friday July 30th, 2010 2:41:30 PM
OOC: There's a reward? Huh!
Still waiting for my Gather Info result for Zeoll.
The Shop -- DM Jim Friday July 30th, 2010 3:04:50 PM
With Bosk, Maikill's and Beri's return to the shop and subsequent sharing of information of the wands, Zeoll also returns from his long inquiry after Valla--and the liontaur is positive of one thing, Valla is not in Mudtown. If anyone had seen a scarfaced elf in Mudtown, Zeoll would have surely found out, but no one had.
Construction is still going on outside and after Bosk learns of the rather quiet root cellar, he adjourns there for a while to pray in peace.
Sanji, ignored by those present, remarks to herself that most here are from Mudtown, and asks Mara what Heranmar was like--or if she had ever been inside it's city walls, because the only caravan's that travelled to and from Hook City were from Heranmar, after that they could travel all over the coast or deep into the continent.
Roy sleeps peaceably, being taken care of well by both Ransy and Cesar.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Friday July 30th, 2010 10:33:40 PM
Beriothian helps himself to a cup of coffee from the kitchen then seeks out Lilly and Hemust to spend a few minutes chatting with them and find out how the marriage plans are coming along.
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Friday July 30th, 2010 11:08:12 PM
Maikill listens to Zeoll's report of his search for Valla, and nods along.
"Valla smart, he probably leave Mudtown, go away someplace nicer. We go too, when we get more money?"
thinking about what to do next, he adds:
"Last time we look in lockers we find two people who join us, we find Roy too. Maybe we should go look and make sure nobody else in locker, just in case. We do that after we get reward, okay?"
Jillian and Hemust -- DM Jim Friday July 30th, 2010 11:37:57 PM "Lilly? Who's Lilly!" Jillian yells as Beri talks to Hemust about his marriage plans to Lilly.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 d20+9=21 ; Saturday July 31st, 2010 11:27:55 PM Sorry, I haven't had my coffee yet and my head's a bit fuzzy. Lilly was that moody halfling that was in Zamnoodle's gang with you. I'm trying to find her and her brothers to see if they've heard any rumors of Valla. Our efforts to find out what happened to him have been nothing but a string of failures so far and I can't seem to stop thinking about what kind of danger he may be in, and how we are going to find him.... sorry, I don't mean to be so depressing. Beriothian inhales the sweet aroma wafting up from his cup, and takes a long, much needed sip of the strong brew. Anyway, how are the two of you's wedding plans coming along? I know things got delayed when Grendel ended up not returning with us.
Bluff = 21
ooc: Doh! typo in my notes.
Jillian and Hemust -- DM Jim d20+2=5 ; Sunday August 1st, 2010 12:09:43 AM
Jill's face flusters a bit, "Oh, okay, I see. Sorry."
"Um, they're kinda on hold," Hemust adds, "just have to figure out a time for it, an appropriate one."
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Sunday August 1st, 2010 9:44:22 PM "Okay, I need find uncle soon but until then we go check lockers, who know maybe another person join us. Or maybe another Roy, it fun find out who in lockers."
Maikill will be quite persistent, and will try will walk up to each person in the group and try and get them to commit.
"You go look at lockers? Not good leave people in small locker, we go look now?"
ooc: come on people, let's do something and the lockers are a good place to start.
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 25 /35 [sub by Cayzle] Sunday August 1st, 2010 9:53:02 PM
"Wait, what are in the lockers? Why are they so important?" says Ransy. "We need to sell the wand, maybe both, and use the money to heal Roy. That's the right thing to do. Then we can do the lockers, I promise."
Zeoll agrees.
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Sunday August 1st, 2010 10:18:12 PM "What are in the lockers? You were! We rescued you and Cesar, and Roy. Other people probably in lockers, but you want to leave them there and go shopping? Beside, use your own money to heal Roy."
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Sunday August 1st, 2010 10:34:35 PM Odds are the lock has been changed by now, and if we were to break into the lockers again it is incredibly likely that we will be fire bombed, putting Sanji, Jillian, and Hemust in danger. That's not to say that we should try to rescue anyone else that's been kidnapped, but it may be a better approach to figure out who is behind the kidnappings and go after them first. There can't be that many people in Mudtown that can afford such an expensive storage facility.
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Sunday August 1st, 2010 10:38:33 PM "You smart, remember stuff. I forgot they say they firebomb us. Maybe we find them, or maybe we trick them and get them when they come firebomb. I not know. You think good, you decide."
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Sunday August 1st, 2010 10:44:44 PM I think you had the right idea though. The kidnappings need to be stopped and any victims rescued. And since Valla vanished without a trace, there is a decent chance that he suffered the same fate as the other kidnapped citizens. Since we were unable to locate Valla I say we take the path that is most likely to lead to him and start hunting down those kidnappers.
A foul odor wafts over toward Beri, overpowering the subtle aromas of his coffee. ... better yet, first thing we do is get rid of the decomposing head Bosk is carrying around, and THEN we hunt down the kidnappers.
Sanji -- DM Jim Sunday August 1st, 2010 10:46:28 PM "Wait, it was the warehouse owner that said he would firebomb us, not the kidnappers, they don't know it was us. So if you guys waylay the kidnappers outside the warehouse, well, what recourse would the warehouse owner have? I mean, the only way they knew it was us was because the key that Black Whatshisface had purchased to store the mole had been left behind, right?"
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Sunday August 1st, 2010 11:27:30 PM I had been assuming the Roy squealed on us, but it may have been that stubborn key. That's a good idea Sanji. It sounded like the ware house owners didn't care how we got a key, they were only upset about lockers we opened that we had no key for. Is everyone up for a stake out?
Cesar - HP 38/38, AC 21 Monday August 2nd, 2010 1:54:26 AM "I... I could put the money for Roy's healing. Those brain-worms already did so much damage.. and even if he was a foul-mouthed and unkind person, he does deserve a chance to live his life out... Let's take him to the healer, please".
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 25 /35 [sub by Cayzle] Monday August 2nd, 2010 6:16:52 AM
"Oh, yeah, sorry. I must have blotted out the memory."
"I still think that we should take care of Roy. I'll use my own money, but we have to divide the loot."
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) Monday August 2nd, 2010 6:19:44 AM
The liontaur grins. "I always say, clean up yourr old messes beforre you make new ones. We should sell the wands, deliverr the head forr the rrewarrd, split the gold, heal Rroy (forr those who want to help out, grreat). Then we can go check out the lockerrs or whateverr."
[OOC: Seeing as I am subbing for Ransy, count the two of us as one vote.]
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Monday August 2nd, 2010 8:55:02 AM "If everyone want heal Roy then I will help pay, but where does it stop. Everytime we walk out that door we walk by countless people who need healing. We did not cause Roy's problem, only tried to help him. If we try and help everyone, then we have nothing left. I new to city, but in country when someone was sick we give herbs, and hope they get better. When they don't, then they might die. It sad, but it how Wold works. Things live and things die, we can't change system."
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Monday August 2nd, 2010 12:41:11 PM
Bosk shakes his head. Well, this mindflayer head is beginning to smell. If no one wishes to go with me, then I'll collect the reward myself. It'll save me the trouble of splitting the reward. Bosk heads out to collect the reward money.
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Monday August 2nd, 2010 12:42:39 PM
Maikill follows after Bosk.
The Reward -- DM Jim Monday August 2nd, 2010 1:25:14 PM
Taking the head along with him, Bosk and others walk down to the inn where they first talked to the owner about the 5000gp reward. The innkeeper is shocked at first at the sight of the tenacled head, but says rather apologetically, "I'm sorry fella's, but it's been over a week since the last braineater attack. Do you have any witnesses other than those in your group that this is indeed the braineater?"
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Monday August 2nd, 2010 1:30:59 PM "Ummm, Roy see it, he know."
He gives a look at Ransy that suggests he finally agrees to healing the ranger.
Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) Monday August 2nd, 2010 1:48:06 PM
Mara pipes up from the back of the group, "Not to question your credibility, barkeep, but how often do you see brain-eaters in these parts? Can you really argue that this isn't the brain-eater in question if you haven't seen or heard of others? Also, if the attacks stopped last week, wouldn't that mean that they stopped just after this group of adventurers set out to do that very thing? Unless you can give us proof of," she numbers on her fingers, "one, the existence of other brain-eaters and, two, brain-eater attacks that occured after you commissioned this party, then I am afraid you have no grounding to refuse payment."
The Reward -- DM Jim Monday August 2nd, 2010 2:43:00 PM
The innkeeper looks at the woman like she's daft, "You do realize in these circumstances, it's YOU that have to prove the validity of your case, not I who has to disprove it. If this is indeed the Braineater that the reward is for, then why did you wait a week to bring it forth? Sorry, unless you have independent witnesses to the fact, like someone that was attacked and someone who witnessed it, then yes, I will have to refuse payment."
Posting Guidelines -- DM Jim Monday August 2nd, 2010 3:36:30 PM
Some of you may have read that per posting guidelines that each character is to post only once each day. I do NOT run my game that way. Play by Post is so slow that it already takes months to get through one day, why would I want to extend that to 1 game day per real year. Not only does it completely slow down the game, but it stifles roleplay. However, if you guys would like to limit our game to only 1 post per character a day, let me know and we can all get on the slow boat to China :)
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Monday August 2nd, 2010 3:52:47 PM
ooc: Can't help but think I posted too much lately, sorry if that is a problem. Just trying to get out of "shop keeping" mode. I could play a store keeper in SimCity I think, just wanted some adventure. Still think we should ELECT an spokesperson/leader to speed up game play. Or we could choose material for curtains...
Not a problem at all... I was just reminded of posting only once in another game, and well, I don't subscribe to that rule because of the reasons I stated. So if people want to post more, I encourage it, please participate as much as you want! DM Jim
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Monday August 2nd, 2010 4:16:45 PM It took us a week because the creature fled the city and we have had to track him down. There is one witness, who was attacked by the thing. He is currently comotose from his injuries, but we are told we can heal him in Hook City.
Holding the head up a bit higher he continues. I understand you need to verify the deed, but my men will not be happy if we are cheated, especially after we lost one of our wizards going after this thing...and it would be a shame if we refused to help if his kin come to town looking for him not to mention potential larva he may have laid.
The Reward -- DM Jim Monday August 2nd, 2010 5:03:35 PM "Well if his kin comes to town, should I send him your way?" The innkeeper was not amused at the veiled threat, "I think we're done here. Good day."
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) Monday August 2nd, 2010 5:04:37 PM
Zeoll shrugs. "We have a witness, currrently in need of healing. And no frriend of ourrs, evidently, so the betterr witness, he. Let's go get him healed, which we werre going to do anyway, and brring him back herre to vouch forr us."
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Monday August 2nd, 2010 9:53:04 PM No worries, we have a witness that I'm dieing to get out of our shop. Do you need us to bring back the head once we heal the witness and bring him to you, or can we dispose of it now that we've shown it to you.
ooc: assuming this inn includes a bar of some sort Before the group prepares to leave Beriothian orders a pint of their strongest drink to fill his flask with.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 d20+1=5 ; Monday August 2nd, 2010 10:04:10 PM Wait a second, wasn't the reward up to 12,000gp? You are holding onto the full reward right for this right?
sense motive = 5
ooc: for reference, the reward was at 12k on Wednesday December 23rd, 2009 5:03:10 PM
The Reward -- DM Jim Monday August 2nd, 2010 10:18:17 PM "Yeah, I'm sure your single witness is most trustworthy." When Beri orders a drink and challenges the amount of the reward, the innkeeper harumphs and says, "I think you can get your drinks elsewhere. Good day." Then motions for the door.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells d20=9 ; Tuesday August 3rd, 2010 12:11:56 AM
ooc: Was amount mentioned by the keep?
Bosk pounds his fist on the table out of mild irritation and tells Beri to wait outside. I am handling this Beri. I am sure he is trust worthy or the people of Mud Town wouldn't have let him hold onto the money. It is not exactly easy to earn that sort of trust here. I just didn't want anyone listening in on our conversation to get any funny ideas about delaying payment should they hire us. We'll come back after Roy is healed. In the mean time, I say we place the head on a stick outside the shop so everyone can see who stopped the beast and rest a little easier.
Intimidate Beri = 9+1=10
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 d20+4=8 ; Tuesday August 3rd, 2010 12:21:47 AM

Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) d20+13=29 ; Tuesday August 3rd, 2010 6:26:46 AM
Zeoll sees the situation deteriorating rapidly. He steps up and tries to take charge of the situation.
"Parrdon me, sirr. Please forrgive the rrash worrds frrom some of my comrrades. Monsterr hunterrs arre not always folk who know how to associate with rrespectable people. I know no harrm or insult was meant, and I apologize on theirr behalf. We arre not herre to impugn anyone."

Diplomacy check: 29.
After letting the man have the last word, unless some response is called for, Zeoll will bow and lead his friends out, hoping like heck that no one opens their mouth again.
Outside, Zeoll says to his new friends, "Maybe next time I should do the talking?"
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Tuesday August 3rd, 2010 9:01:42 AM
Yeah! Someone with charisma that can also roll double digits!
The Reward -- DM Jim Tuesday August 3rd, 2010 1:12:57 PM
The innkeeper smiles at Zeoll's apology and accepts it kindly and even motions for one of his barwenches to fill up Beri's flask for free before the group leaves.
Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) Tuesday August 3rd, 2010 1:35:31 PM
Mara follows along, listening carefully to the conversation. She is eager to find out as much as she can about her new compatriots.
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) Tuesday August 3rd, 2010 2:30:10 PM
"Come on, let's sell the wands and get Rroy healed," suggests Zeoll.
Selling wands and healing Roy -- DM Jim Tuesday August 3rd, 2010 2:48:52 PM
ooc: just come to an agreement, who pays what, you all agree to sell both or just one wand, etc... and I'll make it happen.
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) Tuesday August 3rd, 2010 5:52:11 PM
Sell both, I say!
Selling wands and healing Roy -- DM Jim Tuesday August 3rd, 2010 8:16:00 PM
ooc: should I go by majority vote, or unanimous vote? Up to you guys :)
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Tuesday August 3rd, 2010 8:37:47 PM
Beriothian slaps Bosk on the Back and apologizes, but ask him not to try to intimidate him like that again.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Tuesday August 3rd, 2010 9:37:46 PM
Assuming we are out of everyone elses hearing Bosk smiles and responds Don't worry about it. I was only trying to keep the bartender from getting even more upset. It's my job to enforce Gargul's will and for others to preach it. Words aren't my strong suit, that was Padre's job, then Grendel's and I suppose now it's up to you and Zeoll.
ooc: I am fine with selling the wands.
Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) Tuesday August 3rd, 2010 10:27:18 PM
Mara shrugs, "Sell, I suppose."
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Tuesday August 3rd, 2010 11:50:33 PM "I can not use wand, so sell. I think I need buy potion to heal when I need."
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Wednesday August 4th, 2010 12:33:43 AM
ooc: Zeoll mentioned that this is a rare wand. Does that mean it's not something we can buy in catacombs, or was that just RP?
It is not something you can buy or sell in the catacombs, but can sell locally for about 5000gp. DM Jim
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) Wednesday August 4th, 2010 2:09:11 AM
Zeoll looks from one face to another in the group. "Fighterr, Clerric, Rrogue, Rrangerr, Barrbarrian, Paladin, Barrd, Drruid."
"Am I missing a wizarrd orr a sorrcerrorr herre? Well, since no one can actually USE these wands, why is therre any question?"
"As my bodiless frriend in that bag might have said, it's a no brrainerr."
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 25 /35 [sub by Cayzle] Wednesday August 4th, 2010 6:56:54 AM
Ransy looks around at Zeoll's words. He sighs. "If Valla were here, he could use these items. Having five fireballs to throw would be a very useful thing. It's probably not even worth very much, with so few charges left."
"Maybe we should keep the wand of fireballs in case we gain a mage?"
CDM Jerry [OOC] Wednesday August 4th, 2010 10:46:45 AM
Due to an unfortunate situation, DM Jim will not be posting here for a short time. It is a private matter. Please do not ask about it.
I am personally taking over as DM for now.
Jim, check your email.
ADM James, as well as any others of you that have the time, please email me a summary of what is going on to the best of your ability. I'll make my first post late tonight.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Wednesday August 4th, 2010 10:52:42 AM
Beriothian pulls out his wand and gives it a wave. I'm actually pretty skilled at using wands, even if they are designed for a sorcerer or wizard. But s much as I would like to have that wand in my bag of tricks, I have a feeling I can't afford such a nice tool. Beri returns his wand to his pocket.

One Imbicile's Treasure... [DM Jerry] Thursday August 5th, 2010 1:15:12 AM
That night in Mudtown, it rains. Lots. Continually.
Rob whimpers a bit. [I assume he's with ya. Let me know if he's not.
During the night, there is a strange occurrence. Rob gets up and begins--finding things. This is the most energetic he has been.
He begins making a pile of....stuff. Rocks, an old shield, ruined pairs of boots, some wire, a small pile of charcoal, which he transports 2 small pieces at a time.
By morning, he has quite the pile sitting there. He then curls up next to it and finally sleeps peacefully.
The next morning, if one could tell that it is indeed morning, is still dark and rainy. Thunder crashes and lightning flashes. The smell of ozone mixed with the smell of the foul rain is still an improvement, though, to the norm.
Mudtown goes about its business, though. A little rain just expands the borders of Mudtown. Nothing to stay indoors about.
In the distance, a figure is gathering a bit of a crowd.
"Repent! For the falling of the hooks is at hand!"
------------
Email coming folks.
Cesar - HP 38/38, AC 21 Thursday August 5th, 2010 4:22:09 AM
OOC. I believe you meant Roy... or I missed who Rob is =P Please confirm before I post.
OOC Edit by Cayzle: Yup, Jerry means Roy.
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) Thursday August 5th, 2010 7:40:27 AM
OOC: Yup, Roy and the party are spending the nights at the shop.
Zeoll is eager to sell the loot, get Roy to the healer, and then get to the bar to collect the reward for the mind flayer.
"It looks like Rroy is getting betterr, the liontaur bard/druid says in his distinctive accent, "but he still looks like he needs a good healing."
[OOC to my fellow players -- aside from the two wands, what was the other loot we got, if any? Also, did we get a bonus pack of potions from Jerry, and did we ever divide them or figure out who is carrying them? Sorry, my brain is bad today.]
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Thursday August 5th, 2010 10:15:33 AM
Beriothian finishes up his nightly trance and heads to the kitchen for a cup of coffee. He inhales the wonderful aroma and lets it block out the natural smells of Mudtown. His drink is interrupted my the ravings of a lunatic off in the distance, though Beri reminds himself that in the past such mad men have been known to have the power necessary to bring about such destruction.
ooc: potions are in group look, carried by Bosk. For the mind flayer we also found a bag of holding. We also found a composite longbow and a quiver with 18 arrows on Roy. FYI for Jerry, our group loot in on Bosk's character sheet.
Also, since it is a new day does that mean that construction on the additional rooms for the shop has been completed ?
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Thursday August 5th, 2010 11:02:11 AM
Maikill walks over and examines Roy's pile, he then walks around the shop and come back to the pile. He drops a dented cup and a bent spoon onto the pile.
"I think he okay now."
Maikill grabs a cup of coffee and says "I go out, see what going on."
He wanders outside and goes to listen at a distance to what the man has to say. Repenting has been mentioned to him before, maybe it is time? Thinking back over the last couple of days, he decides it definitely is time to repent.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Thursday August 5th, 2010 11:12:04 AM

Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) Thursday August 5th, 2010 3:26:05 PM
Mara goes with Maikill to investigate the street preacher.
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35 Thursday August 5th, 2010 4:50:55 PM
Ransy thinks that after we get healing for Roy, we should stake out the warehouse, to get at the kidnappers.
"Perhaps Valla has been kidnapped as well by those kidnappers. If there really are vampires in Mudtown, they need blood or bodies every day, so it wouldn't surprise me to see Valla in one of those lockers too. Let's turn our attention to that warehouse; we'll probably find something interesting there."
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Thursday August 5th, 2010 8:33:22 PM
ooc: Jerry, do you have a strict or lenient policy on posting once a day when we are not in combat?
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells d20=15 ; Thursday August 5th, 2010 10:28:07 PM
ooc: I was wrong earlier, we have two helms of disguise. I forgot that we found one on on the mind flayer. Should we sell it or keep it?
Bosk goes into the kitchen and fries up some bacon and eggs for breakfast and sets it out on the table for everyone.
When everyone sits down the horned cleric asks about the days plans. I think the first thing we should do is get Roy cleaned up, give him a clean set of cloths, and take him to the healers. Zeoll, could come with me? You have a way with words and are most likely to be able to get Roy to help us collect the reward.
If you guys want, half of us can watch the ware house and half can come with me, and we can meet back here for lunch and then collect our reward.
Cooking = 15
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) Thursday August 5th, 2010 11:34:17 PM
"Well, we have that 1,000 gold to pay the healerr, so we can get Rroy healed firrst, then collect the rrewarrd if we arre lucky, and then split the trreasurre. So surre, of courrse I will help. Plus I can carry him."

What Does It Mean? [DM Jerry] Friday August 6th, 2010 1:37:19 AM
"I have been given a sign!!!"
The preacher, tall for a gnome, stands precariously balanced on several actual soap boxes. Each box also has "repent" written upon it.
"Chaos is angered! They are angry with the movement of the lands, because beings of law, long since bound, are freed. The balance between the two is restored.
"Law is furious! Buried, almost forgotten, they are now freed! What does this mean? What does this mean?"
He points at Mara!
"You know! What does it mean!!!"
Everyone in the crowd turns to look at Mara to see what she will say.
-------------
Meanwhile, Roy continues to sleep, a slight smile on his face.
-------------
A construction worker comes over to Beriothian and drops the keys in his hand. He nods, gestures at the finished shop and moves over with the others to watch the preacher.
--------------
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35 Friday August 6th, 2010 9:25:29 AM
(Before he went to sleep last night, Ransy used his 6hp healing on himself)
If nobody else will, Ransy will pay for new clothes for Roy. He thinks an artisan's outfit (1gp) and a leather armor (10 gp) will do nicely for Roy. Then Ransy will carry Roy and follow Zeoll and Bosk to the healer.
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Friday August 6th, 2010 10:12:58 AM
Maikill stands with a confused look on his face and stares at Mara. Just yesterday she joined up with them, and now he finds out that she has insight into the future.
Quietly he says to Mara:
"I just thought it meant 'repent'. What it really mean?"
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) d20+13=31 Friday August 6th, 2010 4:52:39 PM
As Zeoll walks out of the shop with Ransy and Bosk, carrying or supporting Roy as they take him to the healer, he stops to listen for a moment to listen to the street preacher. He listens to what Mara might say.
Then Zeoll has a bit of a say himself. He calls out to the gnome, "How do you know these things, good sirr? And of what should we be rrepenting?"
He seeks to engage the gnome and draw him out. Diplomacy 31!

Caught off guard when Zeoll calls the gnome over, Bosk shifts Roy slightly so that the bard can focus on the sap box preacher. As he observes the two he makes a note to himself that the group should have the curved daggers (fate items) examined at the WLA to see if they can learn anything about them.
(Jim did not state if we went to the WLA healer before, but I am a member and have access to the discounted healing and to their bards.)
Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) Friday August 6th, 2010 10:30:55 PM
Mara smiles her scar-crooked smile. "It means Law has been restored to its proper place. Chaos has been humbled by the resurgence of its brother and seeks to reclaim its position of might. But those who watch and listen will not allow this to happen. Law will supplant. Law will overthrow. Law will triumph." Her smiles fades, "Or perhaps you are a damn fool that bothers good people with his rants. Time will tell."
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35 Monday August 9th, 2010 4:41:08 PM
Ransy whispers to Zeoll: "we don't need flimsy prophets to restore law here; we just need some courageous men, who'll enlist as lawkeeping officers; and some money to pay them their wages, of course."
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Monday August 9th, 2010 9:01:47 PM
Beriothian turns to and whispers to the paladin, hoping his knowledge of the law can shed a light on what he's hearing. So, Chaos is upset that law was restored in a most chaotic fashion, and Law is upset because things are finally balanced? And in the midst of all this some prisoners, who were apparently lawful, were freed? And somehow the squalid and destitute populace of Mudtown repenting for the actions of the wealthy inside Hook City will appease their anger?
Law must Win! [DM Jerry] Tuesday August 10th, 2010 12:09:49 AM
The preacher nods at Mara. "Exactly. But now, chaos is spurned. It has lost. It wants its power back. Every act of chaos strengthes it. So act by the laws of your heart. Of the government. No matter how ignorant the law or lawgiver!"
His eyes meet Beriothian. He mouths "Be careful." Then turns back to the crowd with a flourish. Perhaps this preacher has some levels in bard. He is very charismatic.
"Be lawful! Even now, Chaos attacks! It destroys! It seeks its revenge! Woe! Woe! Woe!"
Then with a flourish, and some smoke, he is gone!
-----------
Meanwhile, the sleeping Roy in his new clothes is carried to the healer by Ransy. The healer greets Zeoll and Ransy.
"Welcome."
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35 Tuesday August 10th, 2010 10:27:29 AM
Ransy answers Beri aloud: "I think that preacher doesn't really understand anything about law. The idea that Mudtown should repent for the sins of Hook City is really repulsive. Law states that the guilty should suffer for their own sins, not the innocents living nearby. I think it is some kind of religious belief you're referring to, the weak suffering for the strong, etcetera. But that has got nothing to do with the law. In fact, I would strongly oppose anyone who'd suggest that the weak should suffer for the strong. The law is meant to protect the weak from the sinfulness of the strong, i.e. to protect the innocents in Mudtown from whatever is making their lives miserable. Now, the choice is yours: do you want to protect the innocents or not?
Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) Tuesday August 10th, 2010 2:52:24 PM
Mara shrugs her shoulders, "But are they innocent, or merely powerless? We find the means and courage to express our true selves when our personal power protects up from the retribution of others. Perhaps the powerful are simply those who are openly honest in their intentions. I doubt the urchins and waifs of Mudtown would be more benevolent than those who oppress them if their roles were reversed. But that is neither here nor now. I am heading back to wait for the others to return from the healer."
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Tuesday August 10th, 2010 3:42:26 PM
Maikill shakes his head.
"I no understand any of this. Too much talk of law, like law solve all problem. People need learn solve own problem."
growling then comes from his stomach
"I go with Mara, have breakfast. Solve that problem anyway."
Maikill goes back to the store and awaits the return of Ransy and Zeoll.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 d20+3=8 ; Tuesday August 10th, 2010 8:51:57 PM Unless any of the citizens of Mudtown have the power to move gigantic cities across the globe but are opting for squalor I think it's safe to say they are at least innocent of this particular incident. *Poof* Huh, I wonder where that guy vanished to so fast.
Having no real tracking ability Beriothian gives a halfhearted glance around the mud surrounding for any footprints of the eccentric preacher before heading back to the shop for another cup of coffee.
Survival (track) = d20+3=8 ;
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Tuesday August 10th, 2010 10:30:18 PM
Bosk looks at Ransy, slightly puzzled at his comment. What are the sins of Hook City? It is not a sin to be wealthy, and they are not profiting off of the citizens of Mud town or taking advantage of them. Unless I miss my guess, the original citizens probably came to try to profit from Hook City by offering protection, services, begging or in some cases stealing. It is for each man to decide what he can afford and should do for others.
The cleric drops the conversation, not trying to be preachy and, remembering how much gold he has put aside, decides he doesn't want to pass judgement on the folks of Hook City.
When they arrive at the healer's Bosk hands over the money to heal Roy and stand back to let Zeoll do the talking.
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) d20+13=30 ; Tuesday August 10th, 2010 11:27:07 PM
Zeoll approaches the healer. "Hello, good tenderr of hurrts. I underrstand that you may be able to heal this injurred man. His brrains werre infested with the worrms of the illithid, and although they werre laterr rremoved by a brrain mole, he has been left as you see him now, berreft of his senses, and behaving strrangely."
Zeoll describes Roy's recent strange behavior.
"Can you look at him, and please tell us if you can help him?"
Diplomacy 30.
Obviously Mad [DM Jerry] Wednesday August 11th, 2010 12:28:45 AM
The crowd seems to have the same sentiments as our heroes. The preacher has gone too far. He was entertaining for a moment, but obviously mad. And he wouldn't even stick around to face his detractors!
The crowd disperses, glad in the rain for something to fuss about.
----------
Meanwhile, the healer takes Roy in his lap. "Poor lad. There's something special in this one. More than meets the eye. The gypsy blood in me can feel it."
Then after a moment of reflection, he turns to Zeoll and says, "I will try."
He puts one hand on Roy's heart and one on his head. He begins to hum softly. Some old hymn long forgotten.
Roy awakens with a scream, evidently still in the moment of his injury. He panics attacking the healer clawing at him.
"nooooooOOOOOOOOWWWWW!"
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) d20+5=8 ; d20+5=9 ; d20+5=14 ; Wednesday August 11th, 2010 7:06:54 AM
Zeoll jumps on Roy to stop him from hurting the healer or himself. Grapple check 8, alas, is nothing close to success! "Rransy! Help!" he calls.
If we are not in combat rounds, Zeoll will keep trying, rolling a 9 and a 14. The 14 might do it.
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35 d20+6=22 ; Wednesday August 11th, 2010 7:24:58 AM
Ransy tries to grapple Roy as well, calling "stop, Roy, he's helping you; stop clawing" grapple = 22.
Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) d20=17 ; Wednesday August 11th, 2010 12:18:57 PM
Mara attempts to grab one of Roy's legs to assist in pinning him.
Aid Another check 17
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Wednesday August 11th, 2010 12:31:36 PM
Maikill looks around wondering where Mara went. He speaks to those around him at the store.
"You see Mara, she say she come back with me but I not see her? Oh well, more food for us. Not sure about that woman, she a girl but bested three men while Cesar and Ransy did nothing. I guess it good she on our side, I hope so anyway."
Maikills settles down to eat a breakfast of whatever is readily available. Food is food afterall.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells d20+3=7 ; Wednesday August 11th, 2010 8:06:17 PM
Bosk does his best to help the healer, but with three others in front of him he is unable to be of much assistance.
Roy! It's ok! We are helping you! He saved you! You are better now!
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Wednesday August 11th, 2010 8:07:48 PM
Beriothian walks in from the streets and pours himself a second cup of coffee, followed by a plate of bacon and eggs. Taking his breakfast with him he sits at the table next to Maikill. Noticing that nobody else is currently eating with them Beri decides to talk to him in Orcish.
I think Mara go with Bosk to healer. They want to help Roy. Maybe think that healer needs help. Even if saved, Roy probably still mean. He let kids go into dangerous tunnel. No mind flayer alive to make him do that. He chose evil. Still, glad Roy leaving us soon. Maybe we meet him again, make him pay for crimes. Maybe Roy turn good. I doubt will happen, but Roy brain eaten pretty bad. Eaten brain make anybody do bad things.
Oh, I was given keys to shop before we go hear crazy man. I have your key here. Beri hand Maikill his key before continuing with his breakfast.
ooc: Welcome aboard Buzz!
I had a nightmare? [DM Jerry] Thursday August 12th, 2010 1:55:21 AM
With time Roy calms down, sweating.
He looks up questioningly at those helping him.
"I had a nightmare? Why do you need a healer for a nightmare?"
Shaking, he folds into the fetal position, his ordeal too much to bear.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Thursday August 12th, 2010 1:13:56 PM
Bosk places a hand on the man's shoulder. It was a nightmare of the mindflayer's making. You are not responsible for what happened.
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35 Thursday August 12th, 2010 4:44:23 PM
Ransy tries to comfort Roy: I know this has been a nightmare to you. So it has been for all of us. But we came through, and we will see you through too. Seriously. I don't have hard feelings toward you, I just want you to be alright. You've been hit by evil at its worst. It has been controlling your actions, we know. But now it's gone. Please talk to us. You can become a good ranger again.
Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) Thursday August 12th, 2010 7:09:01 PM
Mara smiles her scar-crooked smile and reaches out to gently stroke Roy's hair in a comforting, motherly sort of way. "Now, now, don't you fret. Your friends are here, don't you see them? They are here and there is nothing to be afraid of. Shhh."
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) Thursday August 12th, 2010 7:58:53 PM
Zeoll, being large and just having tried to grapple Roy, doubts that he would be very comforting to the human. Instead, he thanks the healer, and asks how much the party owes him.
By the way, is this fellow a cleric? Or what? Of what god or power? How about a name?
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Thursday August 12th, 2010 8:44:52 PM
ooc: Did we ever cast detect evil on Roy to make sure he really is good and not another wanna'be cultist?
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) Thursday August 12th, 2010 8:52:01 PM
OOC: Don't look at me! I'm no paladin! :-)
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Thursday August 12th, 2010 11:34:42 PM
Maikill finishes his breakfast and decides to do some work on his room. He finds an old crate and puts a pitcher of water on it and then finds some pallets to make a bed. Spreading a bit of straw on it, he tosses an old blanket on top. Smiling he looks around.
This is the best place I have ever had, I finally made it mother.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Thursday August 12th, 2010 11:48:51 PM
After Maikill leaves the table Beri talks to Sanji. Looks like construction is all finished. Now that we aren't sprawled across the shops floor it looks like we are about ready to open the shop again. Are you looking forward to running a business?
Names [DM Jerry] Friday August 13th, 2010 12:36:07 AM
The healer says, "I have not been named. I am just The Healer. Just as you are Zeoll and have journeyed farther than anyone here could possibly know.
"I came because The Preacher did. He preaches. I heal. Which I have done. Things are balanced once again."
He stands and stretches. "Roy will not heal completely overnight, Bosk. Magic can't sort through horror. It must find its own way. And no he is not evil. He is Roy. But he does have a gift, though he knows it not.
"Until he finds his destiny, keep an eye on him from time to time. He may show the way."
Meanwhile, Roy, for the first time, smiles. Then looks up at Mara and takes her hand.
"T-thanks." He says.
Then The Healer leaves the tent and walks away.
-------
Back at the store, Maikill and Beriothian relax and enjoy one of the best joys in the world. Enjoying a moment of peace, before a beginning.
---- OOC: Can you tell I've been reading Robert E. Howard?
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35 Friday August 13th, 2010 10:17:19 AM
Ransy takes Roy's smile to be a good sign. He has checked Roy before he was infected with the worm, and then Roy wasn't evil. Should have checked Yoseph then too! People are not always as innocent as they seem, he thinks. With this in mind, he starts detects evil and checks on the healer who's walking away.
AFter that, Ransy says: "What a good fortune! That healer didn't even charge us for healing Roy! But I think we should leave some kind of reward, as a sign of our gratitude. What do you think, Bosk?
Ransy is also surprised that Roy should take Mara's hand, a complete stranger, and not listen to Ransy's own words, while he was a companion in misfortune (both incarcerated in a locker in the warehouse). he's probably still suffering from confusion ..
Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) Friday August 13th, 2010 12:42:35 PM
Mara smiles at Roy's acceptance. She shoulders his weight and helps him walk back to the store.

OOC: the healer has just walked out of the tent and away.
Zeoll (AC17 hp 14) Monday August 16th, 2010 6:55:53 AM
Zeoll's jaw drops at the Healer's words. How could he know about me, he thinks to himself. Who is that person?
After standing and gaping long after the Healer makes his exit, Zeoll murmurs, "I have hearrd that the South is home to many unusual Powerrs, not just the famous Crrones Who Herrald Change, but many otherrs too. Maybe we have just met one."
"If so, then we have been indeed forrtunate. Since Rroy is betterr, and we have not drrained ourr purrse!"

Friends, Jerry has been laid up with a bad back, and will not be in for a few days ... maybe for the rest of the week. I don't think he is even up to e-mail.
So if you have any pressing Jerry business, send it to me and Kent.
As for a DM this game, I'm working on it.
CO-DM Buzz Tuesday August 17th, 2010 12:22:34 PM
ooc: Greetings my friends. I am happy to be here to in this game!
I am really looking forward to joining this game. I am very fond of low level games. I believe that is where the true gaming experience is to be had. Not a lot of magic to depend upon as a crutch and working as a team is essential.
Now, it is my understanding that Jerry was going to take the first month of the module, to get you guys started, then I would take over in September or October, but today was the first I heard of Jerry being out and unable to post.
I will try to get my computer at home up and running so I can pull up the information I have on the module, but I do not have internet access at home, so I am dependant upon others to get in a post.
I have been looking over character sheets. Bosk is the only one I do not have access to. Could you please give me permissions to view this character?
Please be patient during this transition. It might be a week, but we will be getting you some regular posts again soon.

ACDM Cayzle here again -- I'll make some sub DM posts this week while Jerry is out. Lord knows I know the game. Maybe we can get some of the minor but outstanding issues with this game cleared up. Look for my substitute DM post soon.

The Healer leaves even as Bosk is still talking to him, and disappears before any pursuit can be mounted. Ransy, Zeoll, and Bosk are in turns amazed at this Healer and at his gift of healing, freely given without remuneration. They suspect that this nameless "Healer" is something more than a common barber or chirurgeon, maybe more than a mortal cleric, but they are left holding only whisps of mysteries and wonderment, without answer. Maybe they might suspect that they live in a magical place and time, at the least.
Mara, with a more solid head on her shoulders, leads Roy away, supporting him. Together these five return to the store. As they walk, Roy's gait and manner become more steady.
By the time they reach the store, Roy has regained a bit of his old self. They rendez-vous with Beriothian and Maikill, and the party of Iron Adventurers is together again.
[OOC: Correct me if I am wrong, but we currently stand at six PCs? Ransy, Zeoll, Bosk, Mara, Beriothian, and Maikill? Forgive me if I have left anyone out.]
Roy asks, "Well, my 'friends' " -- and the sarcasm is heavy in his voice -- "it seems I am in your debt, although the some gaps remain in my memory such that I am not sure exactly how. So if you would be so kind as to bestow upon me my gear, which I trust you have kept safe, I will be on my way. To tell the truth, very far away."
"Unless, that is, you want these humble garments in which I am dressed, in which case I will go forth again from your midst as geared as I was the day I was born. Again."
[OOC: Friends, we have four days to tie up lose threads and get us ready for a new DM and module. Let's do it. As I see it, our jobs are to (A) divide loot (mostly to be done in the Catacombs and in e-mail), then go shopping, and bring XP, possessions, and PC sheets up to date, (B) See that bartender or abandon the illithid bounty, (C) Get the store running well so we can be absent and not worry about its operation, (D) Whatever else I am missing. Pipe up now!]
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35 Tuesday August 17th, 2010 3:34:09 PM
OOC: Roy is not dressed in humble garments! Ransy bought an artisan's outfit and a leather armor for him (catacombs ticket 1141) and Jerry acknowledged that they were given to him. Bosk paid half of it (5.5gp).

Jerry told me we would also take a three week in game break to tie up loose ends during which time I was going to rp the avenger initiation. It sounded like others had side quests or things to do (three weeks seemed long to me), but he was not specific.
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Tuesday August 17th, 2010 4:58:41 PM
OOC: LOL! I'm just rolling with the punches here! Avenger initiation sounds good to me!
Roy looks down at his clothes. "Oh. Very nice," he says. "Well, my weapons, and then I'll be out of your hair."
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Tuesday August 17th, 2010 5:32:46 PM
Hearing the others return to the store Maikill comes back downstairs and stares at Roy.
"He walk now, talk too?"
when he asks for his weapons, Maikill responds:
"See, I tell you he want bow and arrows back. Look Roy, last time you held bow you shot me, here in arm. No do that again."

We've gone through a great deal of misfortunes together, man! At the very least you could tell us what you know about Yoseph. You left together with him and later we found out that he, Yoseph, was a cultist. He's probably the one who infected you with the worm. What can you tell us about him? Where did he leave you? When did you last see him? And don't you want to help us get those kidnappers who locked us in those lockers in the warehouse? You're not going to walk away from that, are you?"
Diplomacy used on Roy = 19.

Upon hearing the party return Beri leaves his room and joins the others. As he talks he hands out the remaining keys to the shop to the last of the party members.
I see our guest is back to his normal self. We are happy to let you go on your way, but I was hoping you could answer a couple questions. Do you know remember anything about the warehouse we found you in or the people involved with holding you there? Any knowledge of the painting world we fought the mind flayer in or the even worse terror that was inside that temple? And you left were Yoseph and Arriet captured or killed for betraying Vellinius?
Diplomacy=7... not change :( Sense Motive = 27
ooc: There was not indication that this happened to Yoseph or Arriet, I just have been suspicious that in the end the mind flayer had their kids and they were missing.

Roy looks at Maikill and Ransy -- and seems confused. "I shot you? I promise not to do that again. Um, well, sorry."
Ransy asks about Yoseph, and Roy's confusion deepens. "Yoseph? ..."
Beri adds to his mental dismay and disarray. "Arriet? Painting? Vellinius?"
He shakes his head hard and struggles. "There was a mind flayer ... and children ... We were trapped together ... you! You were with me! And we got out, and you didn't give me any clothes! I was so angry. What was that about?"
Roy sits down and puts his head in his hands. "Maybe I should get a good night's sleep, he said. He shakes his head again. Then he leaps up. "Or I should just get out of here! Start over, somewhere new! That's what that Healer said to do. 'Get away,' he told me.
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35 Wednesday August 18th, 2010 5:01:48 PM
Ransy answers Roy: "Yes, I was trapped in the lockers too! But I couldn't give you clothes then; they had taken all our money away, remember? So I didn't have a farthing on me at that time, nothing to buy clothes for you with. Honestly, I thought our rescuers would solve that problem for you. But at first they didn't even give me my clothes back. It was only after I healed a mole, the brain mole, that I got my own stuff back. I still think it strange that someone took your clothes and gear out of the locker. I mean, our kidnappers weren't interested in our stuff, only in our money. So who took your clothes, I wonder. Well, perhaps we'll never know; this is a strange town. But we could answer some questions if we stake out the warehouse. We'll catch the thieves sooner or later. Don't you want to be around when that happens?"
Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) Wednesday August 18th, 2010 8:27:55 PM

Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Wednesday August 18th, 2010 8:51:50 PM "Well good then, I not like arrows. Axe more fair, stay close to enemy, give them chance hit too. Arrow sneaky, not nice."
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Wednesday August 18th, 2010 9:10:32 PM If you look around, you will see that the one who refused you clothes is no longer among our numbers. He was a very distrusting person, though reliable in combat. He had a strong concern that you might have had had a connection to Vellinius... that's the mind flayer who had possessed you and the children. I don't know if the mind flayer had implanted it's spawn in you prior to us rescuing you or if it happened after you left, but it took all of us to take him down and rescue you.
ooc: Did my sense motive show that Roy genuinely does nothing about this?
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Thursday August 19th, 2010 7:24:53 AM
Sorry, Beri, I forgot to mention the sense motive check. In fact, it is clear that Roy remains somewhat damaged goods after his ordeal. He is telling the truth, as best he can, and is genuinely confused. Evidently this Healer person somehow urged him to change his location and recover, probably somewhere peaceful -- although you who were there did not hear the Healer say anything to him.
Roy answers Ransy, "No, no, please. I don't want to go back there. I just want to get on with my life and forget all this ever happened."
In answer to Beriothian, Roy says, "Well, uh, well, I'm glad that thing is dead. Thanks ... sure, thanks for that and for rescuing me. But I just want to forget about it and get going away. My memories of this whole thing are ... shaky, and bad. Let me put them behind me."
Zeoll Thursday August 19th, 2010 7:29:34 AM
The liontaur tells Maikill, "I like yourr philosophy! You stay nearr the enemies, and I'll stay rright behind you!" He grins at the half-orc barbarian.
Zeoll turns to Roy, and says to him gently, "Okay, okay. But you'rre in no shape to rrush off rright now. Spend the night with us, like my big frriend Bosk herre suggests, and see how you feel in the morrning."
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Thursday August 19th, 2010 6:38:02 PM
Maikill grins back.
"Yes Zeoll, it good you watch my back. We fight good together."
he says oblivious to Zeoll's real meaning
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Thursday August 19th, 2010 8:39:01 PM I know how you feel. The mindflayer attacked me from behind a couple weeks ago and almost made an afternoon snack of my heads contents. It's only now that he's gone that I'm able to start putting it behind me. I count myself lucky that I didn't have to witness the events caused by the creature the mindflayer was serving. I have no problem with letting you head out, though I would remind you that you needed to be supported on your walk back to the shop, and you haven't had a real meal in a couple days. I would suggest that you at least wait until after lunch before heading out, it should be ready shortly.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Thursday August 19th, 2010 11:20:00 PM
Bosk hangs back and wonders how Roy will react when they bring up the reward. Perhaps they should offer him some gold to help him get back on his feet.
Zeoll Friday August 20th, 2010 7:38:17 AM
The liontaur offers Maikill a sincere hand. "I look forrward to the battles we will face togetherr, my new frriend!
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Friday August 20th, 2010 7:58:20 AM
Roy agrees with Beriothian that he will stay for lunch, and probably for the night. The morning is soon enough to leave. He has no desire to confront anyone.
Maikill and Zeoll have a conversation. Bosk wonders how to bring up the topic of the reward. Mara remains quiet.
So what, your substitute DM wonders, is next? The reward? A day spent in peaceful relaxation, maybe? When was the last time you had five minutes to sharpen your weapons, fix that buckle on your armor, or get some training time in at the WLA (a requirement you may have been neglecting)? Do let's see you guys initiate some actions!
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Friday August 20th, 2010 10:51:03 AM
ooc: Nope, we haven't forgotten about the WLA. Originally Jerry was going to take a couple weeks to have people wrap up their side quests. Beri doesn't actually have anything specific planned so I was planning on heading to the WLA while Bosk did his avenger stuff, Maikill hunted down his uncle, etc.
Besides doing training, while there I was also planning on using their services to find see if they knew anything of the monster we lost the children to and the ghosts in Valla's tower (I was also planning to see if Valla still owned the tower or if it was for sale again so that we didn't lose such a cool side quest). And if Alistair (or Grendel) grant me an audience I would stop by to see them as well.
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35 Friday August 20th, 2010 11:46:47 AM
Ransy will join Beriothian in doing some training at the WLA. He will also set up a note there, for members' eyes only, asking whether anyone knows about kidnappers who lock away their hostages in lockers in a warehouse. He will also visit a guardhouse, politely ask to see a leader of the guard and ask him what it would take (in terms of money and support from authoritative people) to establish a regiment of guards in Mudtown as lawkeepers. Has it been tried before? If not, why not? If so, why did it fail?
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Friday August 20th, 2010 4:23:43 PM
ooc: not really sure how Maikill can hunt down his uncle w/o a lot of dm time, which would take up group time here. Think he will be an ongoing occasional story line now with Jim gone and no permanent DM for now.
