*** Mother (Ellen) and Kids (Jack and Jill) *****

The Guards looks amazed, "Harpies, you say? I hope you got them all! They are a pestilence on travelers. As for Izen, mostly it's the fair biggest one ever in Adurath, I hear they have wizard contest this year! Other than that be warned there is some sort of bloody disease plaguing livestock. Good travailing!"

Aztyr and Vorelle continue to help with the kids. The mother was greatfull to Aztyr for letting her say goodby, and the kids were excited they got to teleport, they keep talking about how cool that was and why can't they just teleport to the fair.

The day continues to pass as the group traviles, just as it getting close to time call a stop, you see ahead in the distance a sea of brightly colored tent's of different sizes, which take up the plannes next to the line of trees that form the border to Culvert woods. There are so many people and tent's that's it almost imposable to see the small town of Adurath.

Ellen looks about, "So many people! There that green tent with the banner of a dancing dog, that's my Uncle's!" The mother is pointing off to the side where tents are setup in group's of camps.

As you approach the tent a bald man comes out, "Ellen! Your's here, but where is your husband and other children, and who are these people and taurs. But where are my manners, your tired and hungry, Come eat and rest! All of you."

Ellen tell her Uncle about the Harpy attack and the lost of her husband and children. Then about being rescued by these heroes. She even manges not to cry too much while telling the story. Uncle, turns to the group, "You have my thanks for rescuing my niece, your welcome to say at my tent for the duration of the fair."

As everyone eats, the uncle talks about the fair. "they have rows and rows of sellers, A zoo with exotic animals and beast, A stage with actors and plays. Contest of eating, cooking, fighting dancing even an arcane challenge this year! They are giving out trophies and prizes to the best of each!

**** Harpy Fledglings (Faith, Hope, Grace, Bliss, Joy) *****

Vaulwyt works on teaching the Fledglings proper eating manners. The Harpy's try to copy Vaulwyt's actions, they are clumsy at first and drop the food bits more often than not, they keep reverting to using their hands.

With lunch over the group continues through the Blackbird forest, until it is time to camp for the night. Vaulwyt suggest long watches, with lot of noise to keep the forest awake.

While camping a solid black Owl lands on a branch and watches your group.

Malgant thanks the man for his hospitality. He thinks that in the next few days at the fair he might be able to learn alot about the way things are in this border land from such a well grounded and friendly man. When he hears about the festivities planned for the fair his eyes go to Aztyr, especially when the magic competition is mentioned. "We may be able to learn alot here about the problems facing the region. A competition is sure to bring out many strongly competitive mages in the area, maybe even from Izen itself. The Zoo might be handy for you as well Aztyr, to see animals that you can use for your spells. We may not want to engage in the competitions though. If those that threaten this region have any eyes here we may give away our techniques, making ourselves vulnerable."

Aztyr listens as the older man and Ellen talk, and when he offers the hospitality of his tent Aztyr speaks up."We thank you for the offer to stay with you while we are here. I, speaking for myself, will accept your offer. We are probably going to be here a few days, since the rest of our group are off doing something that, well is probably foolish, but it is thier decision to succeed or fail on thier own. Again, thank you."
When the conversation turns to the contests she listens to Malgant and then adds, "I will obviously go watch the arcane competition, but I will refrain from compeating. I agree that there will be watchers here from those we may soon be calling our enemy. I also would like to remain as unknown amung everyone here as possible. I know I'll be noticed, mainly because I'm a 'Taur, just like you'll be noticed Malgant. While I can at least appear mostly harmless, you will stand out like a beacon. Would you like to use my hat to at least hide your armor?"

Appolo eats replying to Vauhwyt"Speak for yourself I'm a pirate."Once f dinner is over and the watches set Appolo approache Vauhwyt"You know once we leave they will be on thier own and wether the behave themselves or not,word will spread about harpies in t forest and sooner or later hunters will show up to kill them.In most peoples eyes the only good harpy is a dead harpy.Maybe we should take them to the monster perve.I'll back your play and anyone who messes with them messes with me.But we can't stay here for more then a couple weeks.We also need to pound into them not to hunt people or thier live stock.As well as where they can and can't go.I mean once they are full grown thier wings will give them tremendous range."Appolo says this with all earnestness,he just trying to be helpful.

Vauhwyt is very apologetic to Appolo. "I'm sorry, my old friend, you have followed me without even knowing the plan. I am an idiot. I should have told you earlierr." Her embarrassment is clear in her accent. In her droopy tail, too.

"When we get to the lake, I will divine a good place, and then I will create a small keep maybe a couple hundred feet off-shorre. This will be a permanent home for me, the harpies, and for any of us who want a home. I hope, as we expand, to add settlers who will farm and fish and live here. Maybe some of those refugees."

"As for the harpies, I have hired a Troubadour, who can use the power of love to shape a creature's heart, to teach and train the fledglings. With this magical help, I feel sure we can raise the babes to be Good."

"And this is a very safe place, actually. The Forest is already looking out for them, as it cares for all avians with dark feathers like theirs. Strangers don't come herre, I think. And we will be around. I expect to teleport back and spend the night here often."

When the black owl appears, Vauhwyt is respectful, bows to it, and bids it welcome. "Hail, wise one! You are free to rest the night with us, and if we can share our food or drink with you, indeed if we can do you any service, we would be pleased to do so."

She says to her friends a little later, "It may be a mundane bird, or something very much else. Either way, one is wise to treat well any black bird within these woods."

Should we enter the contests? I feel we may be watched, but can we learn more by facing our foes? It is a tough call, what do the rest of you think?"

Vorelle is glad and relieved when the deliver Ellen and her children to her uncle's tent. "Thank you, sir," she says in response to his offer. "We will have friends looking for us soon, so I don't know how much longer we can stay here."

Nonetheless, she intends to enjoy the fair while she can. She wanders among the rows of tents and booths, looking at all the many things available for sale. Then she wanders among the entertainments, watching with quiet delight.

Champ's delight is considerably less quiet. Vorelle puts him on a lead early on, but it is difficult to restrain him. He tries to go everywhere at once, fascinated by new smells. He wags his tail so hard it wags his entire back half. He wants to meet everybody and smell everything.

*** Adurath Fair - Stay at Ellen's Uncle's tent *****

Hearing about the fair, Malgant suggest it an opportunity to gather information. Aztyr agrees to keep a low profile, or a low as Taur can keep. She offers Mal her hat, but the protector minotaur declines to hide.

Vorelle accepts the Uncle's hospitality, and makes plans to see the fair.

Valanthe looks forward to the fighting contest.

The Uncle's tent is fairly large with sections divided up into private rooms, which he set off one or two for your group to use. He must be well enough of for he has a few servants/employes to see to the details.

The next morning he takes Ellen and kids off to see the fair, bidding you to come and go as you wish. Walking around you see Adurath burgeons with newcomers and locals filling the streets and the fairgrounds covering the clear fields just north of town up to the forest. Vendors sell colorful wooden toys and cloth streamers on sticks for children. Adults walk about with applewood roasted turkey drumsticks and oversized flagons of watery ale. Iced pears, candied apples, grilled vegetables and spiced beef on skewers, and small bags of heated chestnuts and Endover seeds are all available for just a few coppers. Craftspeople from goldsmiths to glassblowers, tailors to coopers, cobblers to calligraphers display their wares in booths, from carts, or simply as they wander through the crowd. Minstrels, dancers, and gaudily dressed buffoons cavort and entertain the crowd, collecting a few coins for their talents. Most exciting, however, is the heavily promoted Arcane Challenge, where wizards and sorcerers test their magical skills in various contests to show both power and finesse. Everyone waits eagerly for it to start.

While humans are the most common race, there are all sorts of other races here include a few Taurs.

Currently you find yourself with a large crowd of people listing to the Adurath's mayor giving a long speech about the thing to see and do a the fair.... Venders galor everything you could imagined for sell, Contest of fighting, eating, drinking, dancing, cooking, archery, and so on.... For a few coins see the Zoo of exotic animals and beast like like crocodiles, peacocks, and gazelles. There's even a stirge, a small monstrous spider, and a giant praying mantis. He talks about highly sought out fencing contest and the newest Contest the Arcane Challenge.

**** Harpy Fledglings (Faith, Hope, Grace, Bliss, Joy) *****

Appolo the pirate, suggest taking the harpies to the Monster preserve to keep them from being hunted. Vauhwyt shares her plans with Appolo as she continue to work at teaching the Fledglings the finer points of civilized behavior.

Vauhwyt greets the black Owl, who blinks at the liontaur, but otherwise stays and watches.

The night passes without incident, weather it was your singing or the Black owl's presence you do not know. In the morning the Black owl is nowhere to be seen.

You continue your journey through the blackbird forest, making good time reaching the lake shore by noon. The forest and its inhabitant seem to be content in just watching and letting you be for now. Your fairly far north along the eastern lake shore.

[OOC: Vauhwyt arranged for the Troubadour, but won't teleport him in until she gets to the site of her keep-to-be. Ditto for the druid.]

Just a post to start us off. More later if needed to resolve issues/questions.

At the lake, Vauhywt digs out her scroll of Commune. First she has to try to read it. She takes off her armor to minimize the chance of failure. She casts Heroism for the extra +2. She also takes of the vestment of Gargul, because, well, it just doesn't seem right to call on Jancassis wearing it.

Her UMD check, needing a 29, rolling at +23, is a 40, no problem.

COMMUNE ==========

Here are her (9) questions:

(1) Great Lady, who lifted the curse on Blackbird Lake, will it offend you if I, your servant Vauhwyt, seek a place to establish a home founded on stone pilings a few hundred feet off the eastern shore of Blackbird Lake?

IF YES ... If it would offend her, then I have a bunch of questions to figure out why, if another place would be okay, if there is any service/sacrifice I could do to earn her approval, etc.

IF NO ... If it would not offend her, then ...

(2) Is there a place on the eastern shore of Blackbird Lake that would be safe from floating islands, in waters less than 50 feet deep, with bedrock less than 100 feet under the water's surface, within a mile or so of the shore?

If YES ...

(3) Is the best such place, as you would judge it, south of where I am now?

(4) How many miles away from here is that?

(if that's asking too much, I could use several more yes/know questions to pinpoint the area. Such as "Is it within 100 miles? 50 miles?" etc. I only need accuracy within 20 miles, and the whole lake is only about 100 miles north to south.

If I still have a few questions left, let me know.

After the Commune is done, Vauhwyt leads her band as best as she is able to the nearest site the lady of justice suggests to her. Once there, she will cast Commune With Nature. The UMD check on that is a 37, no problem. It gives her info in a 10 mile radius. (She paid extra for the caster level 10 form of the scroll.) What she uses the scroll to divine are (1) depth of the lake bottom within 10 miles, (2) depth to the bedrock under the lake within 10 miles, and (3) likelihood of floating islands coming by any given spot within 10 miles. I hope that interpretation of the spell is okay. If not, let me know.

Anyway, after all that, hopefully Vauhwyt will have a good spot to put the keep.

Aztyr wants to wander around, but is unsure of going solo.
"I'm not sure we should be wandering around alone, but staying in a large group will also draw too much attention to us as a group. How about Vorelle and I stay together, and Malgant and Val stay together."

Aztyr knows they are a couple so expects no fight over those pairings, unless Vorelle is uncomfortable.
"Vorelle, I'd like to explore the zoo and then just mostly wander around. Maybe, and I do mean maybe, I'll enter the Arcane contest. I doubt I'll enter, it just depends on my mood at the moment. But I do think I'll change the look of my gear a whole lot."
With that her shirt shimmers and suddenly looks like finely crafted articulated plate armor. Over her hind quarters appears a set of platemail barding. Lastly her rod shimmers into looking like a heavy spiked mace, and her haversack takes on the appearance of a shield with a symbol of Domi on it.
"Well, what do you think? Is it acceptable looking?"

Before resting the night before Malgant sends a message to Vauhwyt, as follows." Arrived at fair. Arcane competition will be held. Hope to see Mount Bone's master and gauge his skill. How goes it with you? Be safe." Vauhwyt may reply with up to 25 words Immediately. If she does I have 2 more sendings to reply back and forth with.
Malgant passes a restful night , one of the few that could be called mostly safe, with Val. In the morning he wakes at dawn as is usual for him and begins his morning sword ritual and prays to Imod for the ability to help the refugees today as they roam the fair.
In response to Aztyr's question Malgant says," Much like I think a paladin or priest of Tomi would appear. Casting arcane magic might be a bit of a surprise. Before we go out there I have several prayers I want us all to share. Since I suspect that both Val and I will probably compete in the fighting challenge, once I hear the rules anyway, your reasoning is sound for us to split up. The prayer I will use will tell me if any of us are in trouble. It will show damage, whether one of us is charmed, paralyzed or the like. Keep your eyes open and your wits about you. If things go wrong teleport to the tent instead of fighting. Val and I will fall back here if things go wrong. I will keep sendings available for emergency communication. Remember to find out what you can about the refugee situation. I would stay low key about it with your group. I am not known to beat around the bush so I will ask the blatantly obvious questions. We should meet for lunch, say at that tavern over there, the one that is part of the town and not the fair. We can compare notes and then go out for a second round at the fair festivities. "

Valanthe enjoys the tent but tries to stay out of the way as much as she can. She doesn't want to be a burden on Ellen's Uncle even if it looks like he is a bit wealthy. Valanthe takes the opportunity to enjoy the fair. Trying all sorts of food and purchasing a few trinkets the shops are selling. She doesn't really need the trinkets but wants to help those trying to make an honest coin.

Aztyr suggest they use the buddy system while looking around the fair. Malgant with Val and Vorelle with Aztyr. In addition Aztyr takes on the appearance of a liontaur holy warrior of Domi.

Malgant messages Vauhwyt, cast a few spells and setup some contingency plans before they go exploring the fair. He agrees with Val as his buddy thinking they might check out the fighting challenge, and picks a tavern for everyone to meet at for lunch.

Wandering around Aztyr find the carnies hawking the exotic zoo creatures, entrance to see the zoo is 1gp for adults, 3sp for kids. The Arcane contest she finds is a set of three challenges where the magic user is judged on completing the task and style. They are destroying a rolling bolder, retrieving a feather from the top of a tower (this is done as a mass so only one can win it), and finding a needle in a haystack.

Checking on the fighting challenge, Malgant finds that it is a also a set of challenges, one is an obstacle course and the other a grand melee where the first hit disqualify you.

There are other contest, vendors, rides and fast food of all sorts.

**** Harpy Fledglings (Faith, Hope, Grace, Bliss, Joy) *****

Having reached the shore Vauhwyt uses a scroll to cast the first Commune spell calling upon Jancassis.
The Grim Avenger finds out that, she Jancassis not offended by Vauhwyt wish to build a home, and that there is such a geographical place she seeks. It lies about 20 miles to the south of your current location, or about 2/3 of the way up on the east shore.

Malgant thinks about the challenges and wonders if he could either win himself, or assist Val in winning by thinking around the problems. He askes a few questions as the rules are discussed.
-Are both competitions in the same day?
-Does one competition lead to the other? ( do you need to run the obstacles in armor because the fighting is right after the obstacles?)
-Are teams allowed?
-Are spells/prayers allowed?
-What happens if one competitor helps another? Disqualified, killed, nothing?
-Who is the competition?
-What is the fee to enter?
-What is the prize?
Other than his questions about the contest, Malgant contents himself with roaming the fair with Val, looking for things that make her happy and spoiling her with them. Constantly vigilant, Malgant watches for any sign of the Sons of Dread or the Priests of Ga'al. The priests should be infinitely easier to spot, but the Taur keeps his eyes open for the Dread anyway. He also watches, just as intently, but less obviously for refugees and signs of refugees passing through.He also listens as others talk to hear whether the Ga'alian tax is being discussed and how it is viewed.

When they all meet for lunch Malgant listens to the challenges set forth for the magic competition and decides he could probably enter that as well, so long as it was not detailed as Arcane casters only. He wonders about and asks around for info on that competition as well.

Aztyr discusses the arcane contest and thinks she might just enter it.
"I think I'll enter the arcane contest, all the spells I'd use are ones that I've displayed in combat, and if we are being watched, they all ready know about them."

She enjoys the lunch and the refreshing drink of chilled water.
She also explains the rules to the arcane challenge as best she can to Malgant.

Vauhwyt grins. "Appolo, you are the best. Without you and Whysper to help with the fledglings, this would have been a lot harderr." Her accent reveals her emotions and gratitude.

"We have another 20 miles to go before we are therre," she says, thinking a very heartfelt prayer of thanks to the Lady of Rough Justice. "Then I'll use this other scroll to find the exact right spot."

"We'll go as far as we can today, and maybe get there before sunset tomorrow."

She spends the rest of the time, travelling or resting, in playing with the fledglings. She cahnges to a gargoyle for flying lessons. Tells stories about heroes she has known, like Valdor Dragonstone, and the good deeds they have done. Reinforces the cleanliness and wearing clothes and eating-neatly lessons. Reinforces Appolo's wise lessons on what you can and can't eat. In fact, she breaks it down into two simple rules:

1) If it talks, don't eat it, and fight it only if it fights first.
2) Be polite, friendly, kind, and gentle to everybody.

Valanthe awaits for the answers to Mal's questions. There are many she has about the rules because depending on what they are really depends on what her chances of doing well are. An obstacle course in plate armor with a big shield on her back isn't probably the best thing.

Malgant checks into more detail about the challenge. He learns that the competitions and their challengers are spaced over a few days. The fighter obstacle course is run one person at a time, where you have 10 obstacles to navigate (Firing 5 missile at target (AC20), Swimming a 40ft moat, getting shot at by 6 archers using blunt points (+15), climbing a 20 ft wall, attack 6 dummies one swing each (AC20), jumping down or climb 20ft, bull rushing a dummy and move it 10ft (AC10, grapple 20), grabbing the maiden (AC10, grapple 15), cutting the rope (AC10, 5pt) holding the bridge and Running 300ft back to where you started. The top scorers of this event are qualified for the grand melee on the last day of the fair. Each Miss by you or Hit on you is a 6sec penalty.
Teams are not recognized, spells/prayers are allowed, but no pre prepping spells, and no attack spells. No outside help is allowed for the obstacle course. Contestants in the grand melee may help each other, but is fight to the last one untouched. Fee to enter 1gp, my only enter once per person. Competition is fighter, clerics, ranger, barbarians and such from all over. Mal can chose to participate anytime over the next few days. The prize is a special magical trophy statuette of a fighter that is animated (as a Tiny object) and a Silver Masterwork Dagger.

Other goings on at the fair, he sees all kinds of people a few priest of Ga'al, there are many refugees a lot are in the same camp group as the Uncle's tent. In the evening hours they discuss the tax and what their different plans are. There are people with badges or emblems from different orginzations such as The Mailed Fist, Star Mages Guild, Walkers, Chancellor's club, the Connoisseurs of Combat, but if there are any son's of Dread the aren't advertising the fact. Aztyr explains the rules of the Arcan competition. It consists of three rounds. Each is based primarily on speed, although the three observing judges have the power to award discretionary bonus points for style and finesse. Magic items are allowed, but rarely earn points for style. No one may to cast harmful spells on contestants. Anyone seen doing so is immediately disqualified and fined 100 gp for the town coffers. In the first round, each contestant must destroy a huge boulder rolled down from the hills . Each boulder measures 12 feet across (~160pt dam, hardness 8). In the second round, a peacock feather is placed atop a 100-foot-tall wooden tower erected just for the fair. The tower is just wide enough for one person to stand atop it. The winner of this round is the contestant to retrieve the feather and bring it to a judge first. The third round consists of a metal needle hidden within a haystack. All the contestants have their own haystack and needle to find. The first contestant to find his or her needle wins the round. Each round is worth 10 points for first place, 6 points for second place, and 2 points for third place, although round two has only a first place (only one contestant can get the feather). Up to 3 points per round might be awarded for style. The prize is a special magical trophy statuette of a wizard that is animated (as a Tiny object) to move as if casting a spell, and a fully charged wand of detect magic. The Contestants

**** Harpy Fledglings (Faith, Hope, Grace, Bliss, Joy) *****

Appolo continues to help Vauhwyt with the Fledglings teaching them how and what to hunt, and many more songs.

Thanking Appolo for his and Whyspers help, Vauhwyt leads the way to her new home Teaching the Harpies important lessons as they travel. The young fledglings are growing fast and soaking in the lessens with a few setsbacks like Bliss echos back, "Eat first talk later?" or Grace "Be polite, kind, gentle. Don't fight with food, unless it want's to?"

Heading south along the lake shore is fair enough travel along about dusk, Vauhwyt feels she has arrived at the perfect spot.

Again as the group makes camp the same black owl lands in a limb of a tree overlooking the camp.

Aztyr thinks it over and decides to enter into the Arcane contest, and to visit the Zoo. First she wants to view the animals, expanding her polymorph shapes library. She will take her time studying each animal, comitting them to her memory.
She will then pay her entrance fees for the Arcane contests, already making plans for her attempt to win the competition.

Malgant goes to the event coordinator once he finds out most of the details about the contest. He is still sketchy on a few things, like is the melee touch only or will armor need to be penetrated to score a qualifying hit. He pays his gold and proceeds to enjoy the fair with Val. If she makes no expression of preference for any items of foods at the fair, Malgant will use his best judgment to pamper her.
When the other refugees speak about the tax and how it is affecting them and what their plans are, Malgant joins the conversation. He tries to learn as much as he can about the tax. How it is collected, where it is stored, who is paying it, what the Ga'alians plan to do in the future. He also offers those who seem to have no direction about what they will do or where they will go the option of booking passage from Acid City as the group had already arranged for.
Malgant has a plan for what he will do in the contest and prepares the prayers he will need for it the next time he prays, so that he will be ready when it is his turn to compete.( let me know when a day passes and it is time to prepare spells again. I don't want to just do it and rush us along) He continues to watch and listen for enemies and refugees.

Vauhwyt bows again to the black owl. "Visit us once, nothing to fearr, visit us twice, the honor is clearr."

"Greetings, noble creaturre," she says. Her accent reveals her nervousness. There are unusual forces in this Forest, ones she does not comprehend. "I'm pleased to meet you again."

She urges the girls to line up and bow, and say a polite hello. She explains to them, in the owl's hearing, that we are friends to all creatures with black feathers, like their own, and we respect and honor them when we visit their homes. She emphasizes that birds are NOT food. Never.

She casts the Commune with Nature (rolled yesterday) to find the right spot. How far out from shore is it? How deep is the water over the mud? How deep is the mud over the bedrock?

She uses three walls of stone and several stone shape spells to make a 10 ft wide stone wharf / boat launch that extends out into the water, maybe 30 or 60 feet out, depending on the depth. She unshrinks her boat and ties it off safely at the dock.

She explains to Appolo, Whysper, and Mookie (the girls can listen too ... and the owl, if it chooses to stay near) that tomorrow she will teleport away and bring back some teachers and friends. During the day, she and maybe others will be under water starting to make a new home. Whysper and Mookie wills stay to take care of and teach the girls. She asks Appolo if he would rather be underwater, in case of attack, or stay here to protect the girls. Of course, the Forest may choose to protect them as well.

Finally, she reinforces the protocol of the Forest. Always have music. Harm no tree, and light no fire. Be friendly to any bird, especially those with black feathers. Someone has to stay awake at all times.

choosing to see the zoo first, both Aztyr and Vorelle pays a gold and enters the large tent with row of cages:

The first critter is a medium size over grown lizard with bright green along its back and flanks, with a much lighter shade of the same color on its underside. The body has darker spots or stripes. Its tail extends straight out behind itself, held aloft by an intricate structure of bony supports, thus allowing its weight to be carried entirely by the back legs. It weighs about 600 pounds. The sign says Deinonychus
Next is a cage with a half dozen Dire Rats each about 4 feet long and weighs over 50 pounds.
The next cage looks empty at first, but as you peer closer, a small foul demonish creature appears as it bounces of the cage bars and snarling at you and cursing in Abyssal language it's a Quasit.
Next is a large three headed beast with a body of a lion and wings, one head is a lion, one a a white dragon and one a goat. The white dragon mouth is strapped shut.
Followed by an Crocodile. Then a Hieracosphinx sits sleeping in the next cage.
A large Dire Bear watches you next from within its cage.
Next cage contains an 8 foot long white wolf about 4 1/2 ft at the sholder, it is pacing the small cage. The sign reads Winter Wolf stay back 15ft. Next section is a Gazelle.
In the next cage is a gibbering mouther is a horrible creature seemingly drawn from a lunatic's nightmares. About 3 feet across. In a large cage full of webs a monstrous spider hangs eying you.
Next is creature is channed to a post and as blinders over it's eyes. It is a reptilian monster about 6 feet long, not including its tail it is a dull brown with a yellowish underbelly. The sign reads Basilisk. Next cage is an large bird cage with a four wind bird the sign reads Arrowhawk, the tail seems to be cut short on it. A group of 3 peacocks is seen next. In a all wooden cage is a Rust Monster. In a strong cage is a medium size bird that looks something like a rooster. The sign reads Cockatrice. A Giant Parying mantis about the size of a small dog is on display. Followed by a larger Ankheg. Next is a 10ft long Manticore all it's spikes seem to be removed. A green vine is next as you move close it reaches out for you, but prevented by the tight wire of the cage. And last Tied to the wall a Unicorn stands with it head hanging low, even so it is a breath taking beast.

Aztyr signs up for the Arcan contest, she is added into a slot for the next day.

Malgant check on the fighter contest the coordinator answers what he can, "The Melee is first blood, so you have hit hard enough so the opponent knows they've been hit." (Hit is against the full AC not just touch.) Signing up both he and Val are give slots for the next day for the obstacle course. With the refugees, Mal learns the tax is collected at the temple, they don't know the detials since they opted to leave rather than payup. Several are interested in dirt city, but seeing how it on the far side of Izen, they would have to go round about to get there.

**** Harpy Fledglings (Faith, Hope, Grace, Bliss, Joy) *****

Vauhwyt welcomes the black owl again, and shows off the harpy Fledglings. At first Hope thinks it is dinner, but Vauhwyt corrects her quickly enough so no feathers are ruffled. The Owl winks back at the group and hoots. From the magic cast, Vauhwyt determins the spot is in the middle of a small cove about a half mile across. The water slowly gets deeper to about 30-40ft in the center, the mud and sand gives way to stone about 20ft more down. There are two fingers of rocks reaching out from both sides of the cove bay.

After the quick dock and camp is made Vuahwyt talks to Appolo and Whysper sharing her plans for the next day. Appolo offers to continue helping with the fledglings and house.

Durring Vauhwyt's watch in the night, the black owl drops down to the ground and transforms into a dark elf speaking softly so to not disturb the others, "Greeting, pardon my forwardness, but visitors to the blackbird woods are rare. I've overheard you talk about seeking help to raise the fledglings, I offer my services as a druid and caretaker of the woods and it's creatures. I am called Dul." The drow remains motionless as he awaits your reply.

Valanthe enjoys the fair but the priests of Ga'al get her blood boiling. She would like nothing more than to bash their heads in. Valanthe tries not to let their presence get to her but old hatreds aren't easily ignored. Turning her mind to the competition she says, "I'm going to have to run the obstacle course without my armor. It's pretty much impossible to swim and climb in the stuff."

Up until Aztyr got to the tied up Unicorn, Aztyr was not bothered by the Zoo. When she saw the Unicorn she was dumb-struck. It was at that time that she decided something was gonna get down about it. She didn't discuss it with anyone else, this was something she was going to do, and nothing or no one was gonna stop her. She was disappointed she'd already paid her gold to enter the contest, but it was no big deal. one way or another, she was determined....
She went back to the tent after studying the Unicorn and it's cage for a while. She waited until it became evening and the rest of thier group would probably be camped for the night. Back in the tent, she pulled out the silver miror and started her scrying spell. She was looking for Appolo, she knew Vauhwyt was and would go nuts if she was scryed upon. After the hour of the ritual, she saw the picture clear up and watched as Appolo did whatever he did. She studied the area enough to get a idea where it was for a teleportation.
She put the mirror back into her haversack and looked around the tent. She had a plan.....

Malgant is quick to mention that passage has been arranged from Acid City to Dirt City for the refugees. He will interview them before the end of the fair and determine which ones he wants to allow the knowledge of who to see to be held by. (He wants to be sure they are not evil before he gives them the names of Rufus and the Inn keeper[what was her name?])
Malgant sends to Vauhwyt before retiring for the evening. How are you doing? Have you found a site? Any problems? " Vauhwyt may reply with up to 25 words immediately. He sends again right after her reply. " Ga'alian tax collected at their Temple. Have several refugees interested in Dirt City. Will screen them and get them there at end of fair." Vauhwyt may again reply with up to 25 words. His final sending of the night is to Rufus." Found some refugees bound for Dirt City. Will get them to you after the Adurath Fair ends. Is all well on your end? Malgant." to which Rufus may respond with up to 25 words.
Malgant then spends a restful night. Upon waking,Malgant prepares his prayers for the obstacle course. He prays that Imod may allow him and Val to make a good showing. Not only would that elevate Imod's status by bring him to more people(not just Minotaur's) attention, but it would also allow Malgant's group to be more recognizable and approachable to the refugees. He then tends to his armor, making sure it is in top shape for the obstacle course. Also that it is clean and that Imod's images are clean and clear on Matilda's Stand. He then prays to know the Status of his friends again for this day.
He then heads to the obstacle course to await his turn.

Vorelle is fascinated by the wonderful creatures in the Zoo. She stops for a long time before the cage of the Winter Wolf. She knows it is dangerous--but it is so pretty with its snow-white fur. Vorelle decides to spend a little time, and try to see if it might regard her as a friend.

If it allows, she approaches a little closer, examining it to be sure it is well-treated.

Because of all the time she spends with the wolf, she is far behind Aztyr by the time she finishes. She, too, is shocked at the sight of a unicorn being kept in a Zoo.

"Hello?" she says cautiously. "Are--are you all right? How did you come to be here?"

She also examines the unicorn to make sure it is a unicorn, knowing that showmen aren't above faking an exotic animal.

Depending on what kind of answers she gets, her plan is to go out front and speak to the showman. "Pardon me. How much do you want for your unicorn?"

When Vauhwyt sees the cove, her tail starts to twitch happily, and her smile becomes a beacon. "Wowsy! This is incredible! Oh, thank you, Lady! Thank you!"

She immediately sees the advantage of this spot. Not in the forest, so no danger of disturbing it. But no floating islands can come in. And likely a great place to stay hidden, and maybe she can make it even more secret.

"This is perfect! I had not even imagined it could be as good a spot as this!"

A little later, she replies to Mal: "Found THE perfect spot! So great! Made a dock today. Will start foundations tomorrow. May have encountered friend of the forest. So far so good."

And to his news about refugees: "Good work! Let me know if you need help teleporting refugees. Keep eyes open for any who need refuge other than Dirt City."

And a little later the druid reveals himself. Vauhwyt greets him warmly. "We seek a home, but not in the Forest. We would not so presume. We are planning to build a home offshorre, on pilings I'll raise of stone with my magic. We will not be visiting the Forest hardly at all, except insofar as we are welcome."

She tells the tale of the harpies, careful of little ears.

As she tells the tale, she has a realization. Maybe it is her own harsh upbringing. [OOC: Though what Cayzle's excuse, as a dad, is, I don't know. Just lame.] Vauhwyt realizes that the girls have no toys! No toys!

She sets out to make some right away! She makes some crude large statues of stone with her Stone Shape spell, then uses her Shrink Item spell to make them small and cloth-like. She gives them to the girls shyly, embarrassed that she did not think of this sooner. She makes a mental note to renew the spells every week so they do not resize back to large stone things.

She asks the druid to dinner, and uses the opportunity to show off the girls' table manners. Or as a chance to reinforce lessons!

Tomorrow she will go get the troubadour.

In the evening, she explains to the druid and to Appolo and Whysper her plan for floating gardens. (more later on that.)

Valanthe keeps an eye on the priests of Ga'al even as she enjoys the fair. She does expect the fair to have good security but she wouldn't put it past Ga'al to use magic and trickery to enslave people.

Seeing a few priest of Ga'al walking about the fair, causes old hatreds to flare up within Valanthe, but the fighter concentrates on the upcoming obstacle course.

Malgant speaks more deeply with the refuges trying to weed any bad apples. He messages Vauhwyt, then prepairs for the first phase of the Fighter's challenge.

Aztyr has a change of plan when she sees the chained unicorn. If she does chose to participate in the Arcan competition, the first challenge is to distroy the a huge 12ft across boulder from rolling down it's path before it hit the target. You have 6 rounds to do 160pt of damage to the rock which has a hardness of 8..

Vorelle looking at the zoo tries to befriend the Winter Wolf, after a moment it stops pacing and looks back at the human. As she starts to move forward, it growls "I am no dumb creature to fall for you mind tricks human, step closer and you'll feel the bite of my breath." It seems to be in a bad mood. As Vorelle examines the unicorn she see that it is real, but slow to respond. When questioned it replies quitly "no. Captured and taken from my woods." It seems to be very dispirited. Asking the showman afterwards about the Unicorn, "The unicorn? It's already been sold, it's to be picked up by its new owner after the fair. Sorry, He paid quite a bit, and made it quite clear what he would do If I reneged on the deal."



Fighter Obstacle Course When it time for Mal and Val make the following checks:

1) 5 attacks at the AC20 targets on the wall. They have normal light crossbows or you may use your own missile weapon.

2) Swimming a 40ft moat, Swim check DC10 allows you to move one-half your speed as a full action.

3) getting shot at by 6 archers using blunt points (+15), (I'll make make these attack after your run).

4) climbing a 20 ft wall, Make one Climb check vs DC10 each move action to advance one-quarter your normal speed. You can try an accelerated Climb DC15 as a move action to advance half your speed. Miss ether by 5 you fall back to the bottom and must start over.

5) attack 6 dummies one swing each (AC20), You many use your own weapon or a normal weapon of your choice.

6) jumping down or climb 20ft, Climb checks same as above. Jump down check is DC15, reduces the fall damage by 10ft. Tumble check DC15 also reduces the fall by 10ft and you land on your feet. If you fall or don't land on your feet you suffer 1 round penalty for each 10ft you fell.

7) bull rushing a dummy and move it 10ft (AC10, grapple 20), make a Bull Rush attack vs a AC10 target and strength check vs DC20 to move the target 5ft or DC25 to move it 10ft.

8) Grabbing the maiden (AC10, grapple 15), Make a touch attack vs AC10 and a Grapple DC15

9) Cutting the rope (AC10, 5pt) holding the bridge, Cut the drawbridge rope with a AC10 attack doing 5pt of damage.

10) Finally run 300ft back to where you started in the shortest time you can.

Aztyr has a change of plan when she sees the chained unicorn. If she does chose to participate in the Arcan competition, the first challenge is to distroy the a huge 12ft across boulder from rolling down it's path before it hit the target. You have 6 rounds to do 160pt of damage to the rock which has a hardness of 8..



**** Harpy Fledglings (Faith, Hope, Grace, Bliss, Joy) *****

Vauhwyt is over joyed by the cove, and can't wait to let Mal know. In taking with the drow druid, Vauhwyt enplanes her intent to build offshore. The druid nods, He looks out over the water "The forest will assuredly welcome the black feathered harpies. You are bound by your honor to raise them. It should be an interesting experiment, I am curious how it will turn out. Dinner? Yes, a change from mice would be nice." When Appolo jumps down from his sleeping tree, the druid is startled and starts to turn back into an owl, but seeing who it is he stops and returns to drow form "Appolo a pirate rascal, I am Dul." After the chat is over the druid turns back in to a black owl and returns to the tree. He doesn't seem to spend much time with people.

Vauhwyt begins making her toy's the girls. When Appolo suggest having Azryt picks some up.

The rest of the night is uneventful

Having been called away to a rather improptu meeting with Rigging, the ranger arrives back at Adurath looking more than a little flustered. After skulking around the fair for a few minutes, Ashira finally spots Vorelle and joins up with her. "I'm so sorry about disappearing like that...sometimes I swear that man couldn't lace his boots without me.... Find anything exciting?" She spots the unicorn and lets out a low whistle. "Whoa...that shouldn't be here!"

Aztyr casts a Mordenkainen's Private Sanctum, a new expierance for her. As she starts to cast the spell, inside the tent, but limits it to just the back room of the tent that thier group was given to use, She creates a mist, that almost seems solid, she releases it to the dimension of the area they were given. The fog seems to almost solidify but still remain permiable. She awaits the others then explains her plan in the privacy of thier new found quietness.
"I'm not leaving that Unicorn there for another night. I may not be perfect, but I do know wrong when I see it. I'm planning on polymorphing into a elvish form, useing my hat to disguise myself as a human, then turning invisable. I'll then teleport into the pen with the Unicorn, destroy the chains, then teleport to the area where Vauhwyt and Appolo are with the unicorn. I scryed on Appolo after the time they should have stopped for the night. Does anyone think my plan is bad? I have the capabilities to take one other with me, but I can disguise you if you go. I'd prefer if Vorelle is the one to go, she is more attuned to animals, where I would probably be a stranger and cause the unicorn to bolt rather that remain calm."

Let me post this so that you can taly this up, I'll deal with Aztyr's issues in another post.

Malgant stands ready at the beginning of the course. He swings the quiver containing his javelins to a spot he can easily draw them. Before the course begins he says a quiet prayer to Imod (cast Bulls Strength) When the signal to go is given, Malgant moves to the first station and casts Divine Favor. He then calls upon his armor to haste his actions and makes his first throws.( 4 this round at +18, +18, +13 and +8, one next round at +17. 26, 33, 27, 19, and 36, 4 hits and 1 miss) As his last throw is made he steps to the second challenge and prays to Imod (cast water walk). He then strides across the water, praying as he goes (cast Divine Power, then Righteous Might, then Entropic shield)( AC 32 with a 20% miss chance for ranged attacks)Reaching the wall and now being 20 feet tall Malgant reaches over his head, grabs the top of the wall and pulls himself up( climb27). Stepping up to the dummies Malgant attacks them, invoking again the Haste effect on his armor for the first round ( attacks at + 28, + 28, +23, and + 18 on the first round and + 27 and +22 on the second 35, 42, 39, 35, 30 and 28 all hits) Moving on, Malgant grips the edge and letting himself dangle, climbs down the wall ( climb 15) charging the next dummy, he misses. He hits on the second try pushing it back 10 feet( hit AC 30 Woldian rule the attack fails on a 1,2 or 3,Hit AC 33 second try( rolled a 4) str check +8 huge, +10 str -4 non proficiency= +14 rolled 24, +2 for charging 26)Moving along he grapples the maiden with no problem. ( touch attack AC 37 grapple 34, natural 20)He then reaches out with his sword and strikes the rope holding the drawbridge( hit AC 30 for 17 damage) He then invokes his armor again, twice and quad moves twice back to the start line. Moments after he reaches the finish, he reverts to his normal size, Imod's power leaving him.

That night, Vauhwyt explains her plan. She hopes Dul is in earshot and invites his comment.

The issue is that she wants gardens for fresh veggies, herb, flowers, and maybe grains later on. But she will not intrude on the forest. So her idea is to make large rafts out of wood she imports, fill them with mud from the lake-bottom, change the mud into soil, and make, essentially, floating gardens.

She has some wood she brought from Plateau City, and she will get more when she goes to pick up her two helpers.

She asks what her friends (and Dul) think.

I would like to listen to the answers to Vorelle's questions before posting to Aztyr's jailbreak plan. Malgant's main problem will be that sad though it is and as wrong as it is, I don't think there is a law against hunting and holding the unicorn. Breaking it out is pretty much the same as stealing it from the zookeeper and as Vorelle is learning, may land him in hot water. Buying it from, or convincing the new owner to free it would be preferable.

Catching up the the others, Ashira comments to Vorelle about the captive unicorn.

Creating a private Sanctum, Aztyr explains her plans to free the unicorn.

Vorelle promises the unicorn she will rescue it, the beast seems to have a spark of hope, "It would be nice to run free again." The showman is reluctant to name the buyer "Part of the deal was to keep his name confidential, but he is someone you don't want to cross, not this close to Izen!"

Upon the next day, Malgant begins his run at the fighter challenge course. The Protector Minotaur puts in a excellent performance taking about a minute and three quarters to finish. The crowed cheers as the servant of Domi/Imod finishes, while he isn't the fastest, he is assuredly in the top 5. Later in the day you get offers to buy you drinks or people just wanting to shake your hand.

Appolo likes the idea as he brings up storms.

Reluctantly, Dul floats down and take up humanoid form, the druid points out that the wood platforms would eventually become waterlogged and sink, also that the black forest has had issues with people taking it trees, he reminds them that the forest was forced to pay a tribute of 100 trees a year to the city of Abus. "As for the dead trees, would you take kindly to people building structures with your bones?"

After watching the obstacle course Valanthe decides to back out. She isn't suited for such a thing. While she can move pretty well in her heavy armor, climbinb and swimming aren't possible. She would have no trouble without her shield but cutting a rope with a warhammer is quite hard. So she'll just enter the grand melee and see how far she gets.

Aztyr thinks about what Malgant has said. "Well, the Showman's first mistake was either having the Unicorn caught, or he bought it after it had been caught. That's the mistake, and the concenquenses for that is now whe are going to break in and release it. Whatever his supposed buyer does to him is none of our worry.
Now, finding out who the buyer is, and since it was mentioned that it was aweful close to Izen, I expect it to be someone who is of interest to us. But even allowing them to take posetion of the Unicorn in my opinion is absolutely the last thing we want. You know what I can achieve in a matter of moments. Just immagine what someone that full of hate can do to a creature that is filled with good. Just his touching the Unicorn could change it forever, I for one and loathe to allow that chance of ever happening. I'll do what I can to make it look like the Zoo owner had nothing to do with it, but as I said, he brought it upon himself."


Aztyr looks at Vorelle, "Ready for some spellcasting?"
She first casts polymorph on Vorelle ,duration 13 minutes. She turns Vorelle into a taller human with a coarse looking face, like some thug for a criminal gang. Aztyr then casts the same spell upon herself, turning her into an elvish woman. She then uses her hat to make her look human. The next spell is Greater invisability on each of them.
"Hold onto my belt Vorelle, I'd hate to leave you behind."

Her next spell is teleport. the goal is into the pen near the Unicorn. Upon arrival there She lets Vorelle speak just a moment to the Unicorn, to reassure it.
Aztyr will then disintragate one of the chain links encircling unicorns neck. Aztyr will then loop her arm around the unicorn's neck and promptly cast Teleport for a second time in under 20 seconds....
Her target is the area near where Appolo was having dinner that evening. She will cancel the Polymorph and Greater Invisability upon arrival at the location she'd scryed on earlier.

After much discussion the night before Malgant makes his run at the fighter challenge course, Aztyr and Vorelle take elaborate measures to disguise themselves and then hide within invisibility. The two transport themselves to the zoo without problem. At first Vorelle's unexpected voice causes the unicorn to flinch, then as Aztyr cast her magic to disintegrate the chain about the unicorn's neck. The beast lets out a lowed weaned "Freedom, you've freed me!" The commotion and spell casting has awaken or disturbed many of the other animals in the zoo and they all start making loud noises of different sorts. As Aztyr touches the unicorn and teleports away, she hears voices of guards raising an alarm.

Having watched Mal do the course, Valanthe contemplates withdrawing from it, but is reminded that only for the top scorers of the challenge course can go on to the grand melee.

In the middle of Vauhwyt's planning session, a unicon making joyful sounds appears "Freedom! I'm Free! Forest and tree! Thank you! Thank you!". These startles the Harpy Fledglings who start sqaking and flying about making all sorts of alarming sounds. A moment later you hear Aztyr dispel her magic then she and Vorelle appear next to the Unicorn. Ignoring the harpies for the moment, the unicon looking better already turns to Aztyr and Vorelle and bows "How can I ever repay you!'

Malgant is not convinced of the need to do this yet, and voices another argument, which seems to fall ondeaf ears as the pair teleports away." What if his payment was the return of loved ones taken to force him to get the unicorn for this buyer, then that is none of your concern, eh? Remember the spell caster that was the pawn of the Dread. It would not be the first time an evil entity used loved ones against a person to get what they wanted. Had you the ability I would let you turn me into the unicorn and I would take its place to see who comes to claim it. If they are from near here and this is our appointed, or chosen domain to ensure stability in then they would be our concern. Finding out about them would be our job. Stopping them from causing harm our duty. What if a misguided individual has asked for a unicorn to be brought to him, captured, willing, however one can be come by, to save a sick loved one. Perhaps his grief has made him difficult to deal with and merciless to those that fail to bring him the one thing that might save his loved one? Freeing the unicorn is not wrong, I just feel that you are playing with the life of another who may deserve more consideration than you are giving him. I will pray your actions do not damn him or those he cares for. I don't think we have the whole story.
After Malgant completes his run and is made a minor celebrity, he uses his new notoriety to champion the cause of the refugees. He speaks to those that will listen about the plight of the refugees and tries to drum up support for them, either in the way of local jobs and homes for the displaced or in the way of travel arrangements to help them travel away from here. Surely many of the fair goers are from varying distances away and would be able to help a few individuals or a family with a ride on their way home. he Also keeps his eyes peeled for any who are not in favor of his preachings and for rumors about things like mistreatment of refugees, problems on the roads or any other tales that may impact the refugee relocation project. He also looks for the bard that was mentioned in the Inn by the figurehead.

Aztyr says, "Suprise Appolo, Vauwhyt, we found a refugee that now needs a home, I thought dropping our new friend off here would be perfect. Oh, and I found you by Scrying. I didn't scry you Vauhwyt, I scryed Appolo, since you were traveling together."
She then turns to the Unicorn. "You owe me nothing. Although if you'd care to remain around this area as a new home, I'm sure you would be welcomed. What Vauhwyt here is starting to do is create a home for our group, when we need a rest. A place where we can go, safely and relax.
I'm also sure it will eventually house some of the refugees we expect from those people who are forcing heartseeds on people."

Aztyr then looks around again and notices there is another new face, she introduces herself to the new person. After about a half hour She says, "Well, I need to get us back to thefair, before Malgant gets too worried."
She holds onto Vorelle and teleports them back to the tent, where she uses her hat to again appear as a holy warriior of Tomi.

Vauhwyt is very happy to see Aztyr. She leaps up and hugs her. "No worries, old friend! You can scry on me anytime! And if you do, and if you choose to deliberately not resist the magic, I can see you in turn! [OOC: this is a reference to the Detect Scrying Vauwhyt always has up. See the spell description for what she is talking about.]

"Don't run away immediately! Stay for a minute or two to see what we've done, and to give me your advice."

She describes all her plans, mentions (or introduces) her to the druid, and gives her a chance to sit and relax a second.

Vauhwyt bows to the unicorn and introduces everybody, including Bliss, Faith, Grace, Hope, and Joy; and Mookie; and Appolo and Whysper; and Dul is he is around. The liontaur is happy to offer her a refuge for so long as she needs one.

The challenge of floating gardens.

Appolo's idea is fine, except that Vauhwyt is incredibly respectful (and terrified) of the forest, and says that she wants to respect the trees too much to plant a garden on the shores of the lake. That's why she wants floating gardens.

Barges are a good idea, but not metal, because the lake is still somewhat acidic, she suspects, and therefore the lake will eat the metal. Stone barges are an option. She is thinking that one over. But barges can be sunk. Rafts would be better because they would be made of a substance that naturally floats, and the roots of the garden could grow into the lake for nourishment.

She is considering substances that would make good rafts.

- Regular wood floats. Problem: will waterlog and sink over time; and all wood has to be imported.
- Cork is impermeable to water, does not rot, and is very bouyant. Problem: from where? Also, weak.
- Pumice is a kind of rock that floats. Problem: from where?
- Lifewood is living wood that remains living and healthy even after it is shaped. It would not get waterlogged. The Forest would likely approve of lifewood rafts, even those made from its own trees. Problem: must be crafted by a Greenmage, and if the Greenmage maker travels for long away from it, the lifewood dies.

"Pumice rafts are my favorite solution," says Vauwhyt, "but we would need a source of pumice. Maybe somewhere on the elemental plane of earth, near where it meets the plane of firre? Or else near a volcano here in the Wold?"

The ranger sighs as Aztyr implements her plan so quickly. She had a couple of spells that could have helped, but it really didn't matter now. Spotting the incoming guards, she smiles...could be some fun. She works her way toward Valanthe. "Heck of a way to make an entrance... We staying or bolting?"

"Well, Aztyr did it, really," Vorelle says in reply to the unicorn. "I just came along. But we should get you home--to your real home, I mean. Do you know where your forest is from here?"

She would like to stay and talk to the unicorn, but she recognizes the necessity of returning to the fair with Aztyr. "The showman shouldn't have kept a unicorn captive," she says, "but he shouldn't be punished for something we did."

"Well, those are all good suggestions, but until a few months ago, I'd have said and boat made out of steel and metal would have sunk straight to the bottom. What about making rafts or barges out of metal and then floating them where you want them? It obviously worked for our ship, shouldn't it work for your gardens as well?
And as to staying very long, well, we did cause a comotion, but without us being there in our tent, it might turn attention to us, and I'd really hate that.
As always Appolo, whatever you decide to do is up to you. If you're helping out here, be sure Vauhwyt can get along without you, I'm not sure when I'll be back this way. It could be tommorow, maybe not for a few days, it all depends on what events will be unfolding back at the fair."

She still heads back to the fair as described above about 20-30 minutes after arriving.

In the morning after the Great Unicorn Escape, Because if asked, Aztyr feigns wonder at the Creatures success at escaping from it's captivity. She enjoys the rumors and and delights in repeating them, she'll make no new rumors so that they can't be traced back to her as the starter of falsehoods.
Having rested the required amount of time, she once again renews her Mage Armor spell and sets her hat to once again provide her with her Armored look. She makes her way to the first day of the Arcane contest and waits untill her name is called to take part.
She enters the contest area and introduces herself to the three judges and turns to watch her boulder being readied for it's short lived roll down the ramp. She considers doing some foolish things, but she gets past that in a hurry. She'd considered turning herself into a Umberhulk, but even though they can tunnel solid rock, that wouldn't be the same as breaking up a rock...
She then thought about turning invisible, summoning up a humanoid formed Dancing Light spell, and then having her Disintragrate spell coming out of it's hand....
She decided against both of those things......
The Judges said "Go!"
She pointed her right hand at the boulder, waggled her fingers, ending up pointing at the rolling Boulder. While she was useing her right hand in such a flashy way, she pointed her left index finger at the big rock and a green bean leapt from her left hand and struck it. (Cast Disintragrate, spell cast on nonliving matter destroys a 10 foot Cube which is 10x10x10 or 1000 cubic feet. The total cubic foot volume of a 12 foot sphere is approx 910 cubic feet.) Causing the boulder to go poof into a pile of dust.
She looks down af her left hand and then says loud enough to be heard by the croud, "Damn, forgot that the right hand does the fire stuff, and that the left does the powder stuff. That could have been bad."
She bows to the judges and proceeds off to the side to await for her score.

Having failed to changed his companion's minds about rescuing the unicorn, Malgant tries to drum up support for the refugees from other fair goers. Most people listen for a while then move on, a few ignore him out right, and a very few listen intently or ask questions.

All during the next day, Valanthe stay alert for repercussions of the unicon theft.

Ashira has a strange dream about helping free the unicorn and being left behind with Valanthe, only to awaken and realize she wasn't part of that caper. Shortly after wards Aztyr and Vorelle teleport back from Vauyhyt's new bay home.

Aztyr acts normal the next day and enters the arcan first challenge easily disintegrating the bolder. While the crowed cheers the magic, two of the three judges yawn having see the bolder disintegrated several times already today. One judge does giver her a bonus point for dramatic hand flourishes.

Both Aztyr and Valanthe here roomers about a theft from the zoo, and a several men are looking for someone by Vorelle's descriptions in connection with the incident. It seem she tried to buy the very animal that was later taken. The zoo owner has put out a 1000gp reward for her!

In other news there is a man trying to rally a the people to go and rid the countryside of a band of dangerous murdering giants.

Aztyr and Vorelle chat with Vauyhyt and Appolo about the unicorn. Vorelle give all the credit for the rescue to Aztyr The unicorn nods to Aztyr "While I'm sure these woods are nice they are not my home woods, but I will gladly stay for a while to help, it is the lest I can do for your actions."

Glade to see the others and the new unicorn, Vauyhyt ask there opinion about her plans. The unicorn isn't much help not knowing very much about floating gardens and buildings. Dur is off on one of his mouse hunting trips in the forest.

Apollo welcomes the Unicorn and offers to go back with Aztyr and Vorelle if there is going to be trouble. Aztyr dson't think there will be trouble, but leaves the decision up to Appolo to stay or go. He elects to stay with Vauyhyt, as Aztyr and Vorelle teleport back to their tent at the fair.

As long as the zoo owner does not appear to be in any danger from his mysterious "buyer," Vorelle keeps a low profile at the fair. If she can't accomplish this through her own sneaky tendencies, she asks Aztyr or one of the other casters to help her out magically.

On Day 0 we fought the harpies. On Days 1 and 2 we traveled through Blackbird Forest to the Lake. On Day 3 Vauhwyt used the Commune scrolls to find the cove. That night she made a small dock with three stone shape spells in a rocky spot on the shore. Also that night, Dul the druid introduced himself. Later that night, Vorelle and Aztyr brought the unicorn to the cove.

That brings us to now.

Still that night, Vauhwyt does some experimenting. She uses her stone shape spell to make hollow balls of rock. She tries different sizes and wall thicknesses. If it works out as I hope it will, she finds a good combination.

To be specific, out of character ... A granite bubble that's five feet in diameter with a one inch thick wall includes 6.3 cubic feet of stone and a total volume of 65.4 cubic feet. This bubble weighs 1,089 lbs. It has a density of 16.6 lbs per cubic foot and a specific gravity of 0.27. Water has a density of 62 lbs per cubic foot and a specific gravity of 1.00. For comparison, cork has a specific gravity of 0.24; pumice, 0.64; white pine, 0.42; red oak, 0.71; cherrywood, 0.56; and red cedar, 0.38. In short, a 5-foot-diameter bubble of granite made of 1-inch-thick stone should float just fine. Her bubble is almost as liht as cork.

Per the Wall of Stone rules, such a bubble would have 15 hit points, hardness 8, and a break DC of 22..

Vauhwyt imagines that if she made a bunch of these, adding a small stone loop on each, that she could then make a raft of them, held together by ropes through the loops and a light frame of wood (not unlike a triangular rack used in billiards to put the balls in place), and then she could cover the raft with a layer of burlap, dump earth on the burlap, and plant things in the dirt. The roots could grow through the burlap to reach water.

She explains her idea and shows her stone bubble to everyone there, to see what they think.

Plan for Day 4. First, talk with Dul. Explain that Vauhwyt had intended to hire a druid to cast water breathing, freedom of movement, wood shape, plant growth, and other spells. She does not want to insult Dul by hiring such a person now that Dul has stepped forward. She also does not want to insult him by offering him money when help was volunteered. She wants him to know that she would be grateful for his help and hopes he will accept a nice thank you gift. Or if he is too busy or just wants to help with the harpies, I would be glad to go hire a druid from the city. She'll be honest, apologetic, and just lay it out there.

Then she will teleport to Plateau City and hire our troubadour and a druid if needed. The druid has to be willing to cast the spells mentioned above, and both will need to travel underwater. The troubadour she needs for a week; the druid, maybe just a day or two, maybe a week. She is paying 500 gp each per day.

In the city, she also stocks up again on more wood, food and supplies, canvas / burlap, etc.

On her return, she introduces everybody.

She is not very satisfied with the so called impartial judging, but she accepts it without comment. She makes her way around the fair looking for the others, and she she stops by one of the vendors and buys a large amout of food, mostly meats, a few vegies and some fresh fruits.
Aztyr after the first Arcane test, wanders around and when she hears about the people looking for someone fitting the description of Vorelle, will find her, hopefully sooner than later. When she does, she offers Vorelle the use of her Hat of Disguise. She explains how it works and that she can just adjust her looks or her clothing, or both.
Back at the tent she relaxes and spreads out the food, for whomever is hungry. She herself digs in and helps herself to some of the meats and needs to remember to go back there again, it was good enough for return visits.
She opens one of her pouches and digs out one of her fish hooks. She drops it on a table and decides to pratice a couple things.....
She concentraits for a moment and casts Prestidigitation. She uses it to produce a flicker of flame hovering just above her finger... She then decides to try something, here in the tent than to wait for later. She uses it to create a slight magnetic force focused in the palm of her hand. She turns her hand over, palm down and waves it slowly back and forth over the table. It should be strong enough to attract the fish hook, bringing it to the palm of her hand.
She seems satasified with the results, and leans back, smiling to herself...

Except that wall of stone states that the Wall grows from existing natural stone an excerpt from the spell text reads... Unlike a wall of iron, you can create a wall of stone in almost any shape you desire. The wall created need not be vertical, nor rest upon any firm foundation; however, it must merge with and be solidly supported by existing stone. Other than that I think it is a great idea. You could grow them like sculpted shrubs abd "prune" them where they grow from the stone.

Hearing the rumors and realizing, too late, that Vorelle tried to buy the unicorn the day before Malgant realizes that she is of course one of the main suspects. During the day, Malgant listens to the conversations, asks some questions, casually, and learns about the law in the town. Specifically he wants to know, the penalties for being convicted, the process for being convicted and what type of court she can expect to face. He also listens as to who the unicorn was intended for and what will happen when the showman cannot produce the unicorn when it is to be delivered.
Malgant also takes note of the plea for help against the local giants. When he hears Val will go to talk to the people who need help, he offers to go with her.

Well rested, the ranger sets about looking to see if she can find a drinking contest somewhere. She's pretty sure she could more than hold her own on that one. She also keeps a very keen eye out for the local law enforcement, trying to determine whether or not they're hot on the trail of Vorelle. (Gather Information=17, Listen=24)

Valanthe inquires more about the giants. Murt takes her and Mal to talke to his buddy Verrek. It seem they are small time adventures who have run a band of giants. Verrek tells you "This stone giants pose a great risk to the local people and should be taken care of. Near by there is a whole warband of dangerous giants, it's only a matter of time before they move to pillage the town and steal all the valuables. We need heroes such as yourself to band together and attack these monster before they slaughter innocents and steal livestock!"

Vorelle tries to keep a low profile, until Aztyr finds her and offers the hat of Disguise. Mal tries to find out some information about the laws and such, the small town members aren't interested in property disputes between fair goers, but they do try to stop violent attacks. It up the the showman to find and retrieve his property or fair value. So far the showman is unharmed, but he seems very intent on finding the unicorn.

Looking for a contest to try her skills at, Ashria stumbles upon an Ale drinking contest. The rules are simple you have to drink more Ale then the vender's current champion in one minute's time. The champion is a red cheeked dwarf who drank 12 pints in on minite. (Con check DC20 to drink a pint in one round. Miss by 5 is only a half pint. More than five is a quarter pint for the round. 20 rounds in one minute. )

No fair or turn security is looking for Vorelle, but planty of others looking to earn the reward are.

After experimenting a little with the Hat of Disguise, Vorelle settles on her appearance as a red-haired half-elf woman, and continues to enjoy the fair.

Sadly, there is no way to disguise Champ. Still, she left him tied up when she toured the Zoo and spoke to the keeper. It's possible nobody realizes he's her dog.

With that little problem off her mind, she accompanies Aztyr in her search for another contest, although she declines to take part in the ale-drinking one.

A little disappointed that ale is all there is to drink, the ranger bellies up to the bar as it were and grins at the dwarf. It's been a long time since she's had some dedicated drinking time, but she's pretty sure she remembers how it goes. Put the wet stuff in your mouth...not your neck, not on the table, but down the throat. She watches the dwarf down his ale with suspicion. The fellow just moves too fast....perhaps he's hasted. (Ummmm 12 pints in one minute?? Dude, then he must be double fisting it! If I made all 10 checks I could only get 10 pints.) Still...Ashira's pretty sure that it's written somewhere in the Pirate code that no drinking challenge shall go unanswered, or at least she's pretty sure Smiley Jim told her that...she's a little hazy about that part. As soon as time is called, Ashira swizzles down the alcohol in rapid succession, but try as she might, there's no possible way she can even come close to the dwarf's record. When time is called, a meager 5 and a half pints have actually been consumed by the ranger. Slamming her fist on the table, she pays a second entry fee, determined to take the dwarf down. (By my figures, Ashira's BAC is somewhere around 0.151, so she should have at least one more minute, maybe two before she drinks herself into unconsciousness ;)

Vauhwyt is very grateful to Dul. "I am so deeply in your debt," she says. "You have been very welcoming, beyond mere neighborliness. If there is ever any service or thing I can do to say thank you, please just let me know."

She explains to him her rationale.

"Well, if catastrophe hit, like an attack of some sort, if the whole structure were based on pilings, and all connected, then the entire structure might be vulnerable. My goal is to have a central stone platform on pilings, and four smaller platforms north, south, east, and west of the big one. They will not be connected, so if one is toppled, the others will still stand. These separate platforms may have 100 to 200 feet of open water between them. My thought is to use the floating gardens to connect them."

"Another advantage is that if there is a flood, or a magical attack to raise or lower the surface of the waterr, the rafts would be immune to that as well. And the rafts are pretty safe from attack, since you would have to pop a large number of bubbles to sink one, not just a relative few pilings." Her accent reveals her enthusiasm for this plan.

"And if we did have to flee or evacuate, we could detach the rafts and float away on them, using poles or oars or water elementals to push us."

"And I think it will take fewer castings of the Wall of Stone spell to create the bubbles than to make the pilings and floor for a garden, which would then be swept away in a flood anyway."

"We will use the roofs, but not just for gardens. The fledglings need space for landings and takings-off, and the roof will be their play area."

As soon as she returns with the troubadour, she introduces her? him? to Bliss, Faith, Grace, Hope, and Joy. She explains that this is their teacher, and they are to treat a teacher with respect and honor. He will stay for a number of days, teaching them how to sing and to behave like civilized girls. She surrenders them to the care of the professional.

Of course, she has already arranged for the troubadour to use his/her special class powers to guide the fledglings toward good choices and behaviors, and to curb their worst instincts.

Then it is time for Dul and Vauhwyt to get to work. She and Dul, and maybe Appolo, ride out in the unshrunken boat to the center of the cove. Dul's job is to cast water breathing on her as needed. Vauhwyt's job is to Move Earth. She seeks to clear the area right in the middle of the cove, clear down 20 feet to the bedrock, in the shape of an "X" or a cross. She uses the spell to move the cleared earth back to a huge pile in the shallow water close to the little dock she made yesterday with two wall of stone spells. Finally, she uses two new wall spells to make two more bubbles, joining the two she made yesterday.

Dul's job is also to use Stone Shape to smooth and prepare the foudation rock right where Vauhwyt will be raising pilings and structures, as she shows him.

Appolo can join the troubadour to keep the fledglings safe, Vauhwyt suggests, or get Dul to cast water breath on him to stay with Vauhwyt so that nothing interrupts the Move Earth spell. With Whysper and the unicorn to keep the girls safe, Vauwhyt thinks the water is where she is more likely to need an experienced bilge rat. She grins when she says that to show she is teasing.

OOC: Ashira DM said 20 rounds of drinking in 1 minute, not the standard 10 for combat rounds.
IC:
As the evening approaches, Aztyr renews the spell on the tent, in order to keep thier privacy. She also enjoys the fair and wanders around with Vorelle, still trying different foods, but very few of the drink concoctions, she'd prefer to keep a clear head.
She turns in somewhat early, due to the fact that tommorow is the second Arcane test.
In the morning she renews her Mage Armor as usual, being one of the very first thing she does every morning.
She collects her thoughts, and has a short chat with Jynx, about her current plans for the contest and his part in the up coming contest.
She arrives early, getting a good view of the pillar from all the way around. While she is walking around and looking everything over, she switches out one of her rings. She removes the ring she got from Ringalingling and replaces it with her newly aquired ring, the ring of Featherfall. All she is sure of, is that if it fails to work, she will find an entrance to the Catacombs and lodge a complaint.
As the crowd grows and the contestants gather the volume in the area grows to a very loud continous roar.
She almost misses the command to "GO". (init 14)
She concentraits and teleports. Not to the top of the pillar like just about everyone else, but just off to the side, where no one else is most likely to be targeting. Just as she teleports, she tells Jynx, grab the feather (rolled a 5, should still hit was just making sure no 1 was rolled).
As she appeared in mid air, the ring of Featherfall kicks in and she starts to slowly drift downward.

Drinking game 20 rounds / test rolls. Effectively 2 min. (Sorry for the 1/min vs 20 round mistake)

For each pint drunk make a Fort save vs DC10 +1/pint drunk cumulative. or lose 2 Int & 2 Dex for each roll failed make another after 5min. All lost points are recovered after 24hr. Using slow poison or neutralize is considered cheating. You can continue to try again until you pass out!

Also, It is the dwarf's recorded your trying to beat. If you break the record then your will be the new record to break!

As the man speaks to him and Val, Malgant quietly consults Imod concerning the man's intentions.(Cast Detect Evil) Once he has cast the spell he concentrates and tries to listen intently to all that is said. Something about the way the man speaks just doesn't ring true to Malgant. Maybe it is the emphasis that the man puts on treasure being taken rather than the giants hurting innocents in their attack. Why is it that everything here at the fair strikes Malgant as not being the whole truth?

After the meeting, As they walk around the fair headed back to the tent, Malgant arranges a few purchases. He purchases a few bottles of good wine, from various locations in the Wold. He arranges to have these, wine glasses and an assortment of food platters with some Elven and some Minotaur delicacies sent over to the tent this evening. He also takes Val shopping to help her replace any portion of her wardrobe she may have lost or left behind when she was teleported away from the group and struck by the changing magic in the village she arrived in. He plans to wine and dine her this evening and tries to select foods she has either mentioned from her short childhood, her longer piratehood or from her time on Minotaur Isle recently.

OOC: Ooooohkay...I think I get what you had in mind...soooo...as of last round, Ashira has consumed 10 pints in 2 minutes. Close, but no cigar.

Cursing her inability to beat the dwarfs record, the ranger is relentless in her determination. A slight buzzing begins in her ears, and she feels a familiar tingling beginning in her fingers (Fort=16 vs. 20) An mischievous smile forms on her face. "You're going down short stuff!" she growls as she signals for more drinks. When the signal is given, Ashira begins to greedily suck down the ale once more. (d100s are dividers so I know where the next round of Con rolls are. :)) Amazingly, even though she's beginning to feel the effects of the alcohol, it almost seems to steady the salty sea dog and this time, Ashira manages to guzzle 12 pints. She smiles up at Mr. Rednose with a smirk, though it's beginning to become more difficult to focus on his face. (Fort.=22 vs. 32). There is now a decided slur to her speech and it's more than a bit louder than it probably needs to be "You jusssst wait Rednossh...a pirate never quitsssh." Burping loudly and ever so not lady like, she signals for another round to be poured.

Using the Hat of Disguise, Vorelle not a red-haired half-elf lass wonder about the fair. Sometime during the fair she has a person come up to her and ask if she has seen a slim young human woman of average hight with dark blond hair in braids?

Ashira pays the fee and takes a try at beating the drinking record. In her first attempt she makes a good showing and downs 10 pints to the sounds of onlookers chanting "Drink, Drink, Drink ...". Feeling a slight buzz, she tries again sucking down pint after pint, and when the bell is struck she has managed to suck down 12 pints tyeing the record and feeling no pain. The crowed cheers, but record must be broken to win.

While speaking to the two people Malgant uses magic to look for evil aura. Nether Verrek a male half-orc barbarian nor Murt a Male dwarf fighter have an evil aura. While you sense their Motive (17 vs 13) you can tell that they are stretching the truth in trying to get you to go after the giants. After speaking with them two men, Malgant continues about the fair shopping for stuff.

In reply to Valanthe's questions, she learns that the Giants have only recently move into the area and are making it there home. Verrek snaps "Does someone have to die first! These are Giant's for the god's sakes!"

The next day Aztyr is up early ready to take on the second arcane challenge, where all the magic users must try and get the feather first. When the whistle blows, the magic users start to cast spells, two early spells are Dimensional Lock about the feather and wall of force. The dimension lock causes you and several other magic users to teleport or dimension-door twenty feet away from their target. And the wall of force gets one or two more as they slam into like bugs on a window. You hear a few other wizards casting dispel magic targeting the area around the feather. Luckily your feather fall isn't dispelled unlike one or two other wizards. Next round!

In a few days he will grant me the skill to do my best in the melee. When not helping me to do my physical best at fighting he also grants me the powers to discern falsehoods. If instead you want to keep dancing around the bush, then Imod will allow me to know. Then we probably won't help you. Malgant slowly rises and prepares to leave. Trickery tires him and makes him angry. He shouldn't have needed to scold those men, but he did. They were not evil, but they were concealing something. Had the giants set up on their gold mine, bootlegging operation, who knew. But there was something they were not telling him and Val that could make a difference.

Aztyr stops her falling by casting fly upon herself. She then uses it to move over next to the pillar, at just below the level where the feather is still resting on top of it.She will hold onto to the pillar, to prevent further falling down again, if her fly spell is cancelled.
She again comunicates with Jynx, *be ready little one, you will soon be able to grab the feather for me*. speaking in thier personal language.

As soon as the signal to begin is given, Ashira moves with a rapidness that defies her level of intoxication. Glass after glass are greedily guzzled down her throat and the tunic under her armor is now completely saturated. Still, when time is called, the ranger has totaled a whopping 13 and one half pints of ale! Her grin spreading from ear to ear, she glares somewhere in the general direction of the now four blurry red nosed dwarves. Rising to her feet, she wobbles slightly and grasps the edge of the table to steady herself. "And thasss how we do it!" She bangs her fist on the table, but forgets that it was busy stabilizing her and she sways a little before she seats herself very crookedly on her stool. (Fort. save 29 vs. 46) Her arm points in the general direction of the other contestants whom she's having an increasingly difficult time making out. "Top that you bilge rats!"

In the bar, she watches Ashira's performance with astonishment. She herself does not participate, but she stands by with her healer's kit, just in case.

After the second round, she places a small side wager (5 gp) on her companion.

After a hard day's work, Vauhwyt returns to shore. First and foremost, she wants to hear the story of the troubadour's day with the harpie girls. By the way, what is the troubadour's name?

She also asks Mookie for the story of the day. She expects him to be giving flying lessons to the girls.

She explains her plans for tomorrow. She wants the troubadour to use the lyre to build a tower on the bottom of the lakebed. She envisions a 60-foot high tower, so that only the topmost five feet will poke out of the water. The tower will be 40 ft in diameter on the bottom, with 15-foot-thick walls, and 30 feet in diameter at the top, with 5 foot thick walls.

The stone blocks used to make the tower will be excavated from passages carved under the tower.

Meanwhile, Vauhwyt and Dul will be using stone shape spells to smooth and seal every square inch of the tower, in and out, to make it waterproof. First priority will be to smooth and seal the places where the stone blocks meet, where water is most likely to seep in, and where joining blocks together will give the structure greater strength.

Dul will also be keeping the water breathe and free movement spells going.

To use the lyre requires a DC18 Perform (Strings) check, once per hour after the first hour. Vauhwyt will make sure that the Troubadour will be wearing the Circlet of Persuasion and a Heroism Spell while playing to give a +5 boost to the checks. She wonders how good this performer is, and how long it will be before missing a check. She wonders how many hours of playing it will take to raise the tower -- if the magical instrument even functions!

Declaring that Verrek and Murt are not telling the whole truth, Malgant refuses to deal with them until he can determine the truth with Imod's help. Valanthe tires sooth over Mal's words, but Verrek get's angry retorting back "No, we have not lied, and if innocent people die it will because the Mintaur would rather play games than defend against giants. Come on Murt!" Verrek and Murt storm away. From the earlier discussion you think you might be able to find the giants.

Continuing the second arcane challenge, Aztyr user her magic to fly. Grabbing hold of the pillar she calls to Jynx to be ready. Spells continue to fly fast and furiously about, but the most seriously one to effect Aztyr is a strong gust of wind blow other fliers away from the pillar. The dimension lock lock and wall of force are still about the feather. There are a handful of other wizards flying up towards the prize, a few of which have taken on the shape of creatures such as giant eagle, or an arrow hawk.

Determine to win the drinking contest, Ashira tires again guzzling down pint after pint and when the bell is rung stopping her and the others, 13 empty glasses sit in front of her. The crowd cheers wildly and the judge raises Ashira's hand "We have a new record!!! What a woman to out drink a dwarf!" You feel the need to drain your bilge, now only if the door would quick moving.

Vorelle replies truthfully to the seekers. As they move on, Vorelle keeps an eye on Ashira after her performance.

continuing to help with the Harpy young, Appolo demonstrates his various skills. The Fledglings are very good at leaning new things and excel at picking pockets.

After a days work, Vauhwyt get an up date from the Troubadour's first day. Goodwin, describes how the day went, the first started with singing lessons, the girls have beautiful sing voices and did quite well learning several love songs, then after lunch he started them on dance lessons at first is was simple ballet, but then the girls got inspired and took to dancing in the air. Goodwin starts to shed a tear, "It was beautiful you should have seen it! The act of loving others is most effectively expressed in dance and song, I think they are making wonderful progress!" Goodwin starts patting his pockets for his note book, "Where did I put my book? I've had the hardiest time today of keeping track of stuff." Dul is being quite helpful in assisting with the Vauhwyt's building project.

Aztyr, glad she's held onto the pillar, for the moment at least, gets ready to cast another spell, reminding Jynx to grab the feather as soon as it appears.
She points her finger at the pillar, knowing that it is the first timg her spell will contact, leaving the other spells hanging in mid-air. She concentraits and Disintragates the pillar, eliminating 1000 cubic feet of it.
She urges Jynx to grab the feather by reaching up under the lock spell and the walls of force, to snatch the feather. He will then do his best to hide about her person as usual.

Aztyr exerts her fly spell to move her down, only if Jynx grabbed the feather, if not, she will use it to remain where she was.

He had stepped in it this time. Malgant was sorry to see the two men walk away, but that did not soothe his anger at their cropping of the truth. He waited for Val outside. " They were hiding something Val. I won't go and do thug work for someone who is going to lie to me. I have asked Imod for truth prayers all week and when I have to ask for combat prayers to get past the obstacle course I of course need the truth prayers. I'm sorry." He looks downcast for a moment, but then mentions to her," I did arrange something to make up for it to you tonight though. The things for the evening should start arriving at the tent soon. Join me and let me make up for spoiling your meeting?" Malgant extends his arm to her and does his best to look repentant about pissing off the men at the meeting.

"One second honey." Valanthe says to Malgant.

She turns and storms after the two men, pulling her warhammer from her belt. "Hey!" Valanthe shouts angrily at them just before smacking the side if her warhammer against her shield. "I am not finished. I tried being nice. So this is how its going to be. You will tell me what town is threatened by these giants. In a few days when my companions return we will look into the situation."

Valanthe has narrowed her eyes, her face twisted in anger beneath her helm. Her arm is raised, pointing the warhammer at the men. "If I'm willing to face giants imagine what I can do to you two. One way or another you will tell me what I want to know."

ooc: Valanthe is trying to use intimidation to get the men to comply. Her check is 22.I remember reading that strength could be used for intimidation but I don't know what the circumstance is for that. If Valanthe can use strength instead of charisma her check would be 26.

Hanging onto the tower some 20 feet below the feather, Aztyr uses her magic to disintegrates a large portion of the 100ft wooden tower upon which the feather sits. The feather now unsupported beings to float downward. Jynx a Tiny Merkat creature reaches up from Aztyr shoulder, but just doesn't have the reach to stretch 20ft upward. Meanwhile the peacock feather dances and swirls about as it slowly floats downward. Spells are flashing about left and right, wizards and polymorphed creatures swoop about all trying to grab for the elusive feather. Flying now her self, Aztyr is in position as the feather float downward and Jynx snatches the end of it flutters by. Having the feather now, Aztyr must give it to the judge to win. Suddenly, Aztyr and Jynx are hit with Glitterdust (Will save vs DC16 or be blinded for 10rounds)

Having aggravated the two men into leaving, Malgant comments to Val about them and offers to make it up.

Valanthe storms after the two in a intimidating fashion demanding to know where the giants are, Verrek snarls back itching to draw his weapon, but Murt the dwarf stops him "They ain't worth the trouble. The Giant's arn't hard to find less than a day to the east of here is a mountain, you'll find the stone giants in the rocky foothills below it." The half-orc obviously intimidated tries to save face as they leave "Yea, not worth the trouble."

Vorelle cheers Ashira along with the rest of the crowed and helps her to a chair.

The building project and training of the Fledgling continue. With Vauhwyt and Dur doing the building, while Goodwin and Appolo tutor the girls.

There's intimidation, and there's intimidation. When Jack Bauer has you locked in a windowless cell, that's one kind. When your mother makes you look in her eye and tell her if you broke her favorite vase, that's quite a different kind -- arguably, more intimidating, but less psychologically damaging.

So it is that Mama Vauhwyt looks each of her fledglings in the eyes and asks, "Did you take Troubadour Goodwin's notebook?" But of course, her Grim prestige class ability means that they can't lie unless their bluff checks beat her intimidation.

Assuming that turns up a culprit or two -- or five -- Vauhwyt engages the troubadour and her fledglings in a heart-to-heart chat about appropriate uses of sleight of hand. "Your Uncle Appolo is very clever, but he knows in his heart that there are times for joking, times for stealing, and times to leave your fingers in your pockets," she says. Hopefully the troubadour will use his special ability to bend their hearts in the right directions. And hopefully Appolo will back her up on this one! :-)

Aztyr takes the feather from Jynx and is caught unprepared for the glitterdust spell, but manages to shake off effect with an effort.
She glances down to the judges table and casts yet another spell. She once again teleports, to just above the ground, and offers up the feather to the judges.
"Here you go, one feather just as you requested."
She awaits the results...

Malgant finds that even HE jumps when Val shouts at the backs of the retreating men. He is glad he knows her softer side rather than the side she now shows. She gets her information and he again holds out his arm to her, to conduct her back to their benefactor's tent.

The ranger laughs at Vorelle, though doing so causes a couple of interesting lurches in her stomach. I don't need to hurl, but I gotta find me the head...and quick!! Swaying and lurching, she tries to make her way to the door, and the privie, but it's a difficult job with her head on fire and everything constantly moving! With Vorelle's help, she finds relief just in the nick of time! Heading back, she leans heavily on her fellow ranger. You know...I alwaysss did like you! Waaa happened to you...you changed..." Ashira looks down at the bulge pressing in on her armor and her slightly flabby arms. "I changed too...I ust to be ssso ssstrong...now jussst look at me! I couldn even help out wif doess *hick* shhupid flying things." Ashira's frown fades to a sloppy grin. "Hey, you wanna go out and get a few drinkss tonight? I'll buy! Then you can tell me all about wasss been going on, and why Appolo keeps grinnin at you."

Upon arriving back at the contest, she fixes the other contestants with what's meant to be a menacing glare, but probably ends up looking like a dazed stare. "You call yoursevvs men, c'mon, whoss next? Or are you juss gonna sssay I'm the winner?!" Making a lunge for her seat, Ashira misses it by a mile and lands face first on the table. Pulling herself back up, an unnatural red flush augments her green/grey skin in an odd manner. "Ssstupid wobbly chair!"

Valanthe hooks her warhammer on her belt and walks with Malgant back to Ellen's Uncle's tent. "Sometimes having the skin of a dark elf does have its advantages. Now we know where the giants are and you don't have to spend the magic to do so. I think we can head over there and try to take a look. Either the giants are as those two said and will try to kill us. Or they are running from a bigger problem. That thought is a bit worrysome. So what's this surprise you have for me?" Valanthe asks with a smile.

ooc: an angry Jack Bauer vs an angry mother is a tough choice. I might have to face the angry mother instead. Just because you know she's not going to shoot you in the kneecaps.

After introducing himself to the Bard and helping with the kids.Appolo is smiling when Vuahwyt instructs the Harpies about picking pockets. He had sureptisiously moved up close to Vuahwyt and quickly removed her coin bag.

In the Arcane challenge, Aztyr draws upon her heroic essences to resist the blinding magic, and teleports to the judges with the feather, before the other magic users can ensnare her with more magic. The Judges declare Aztyr the winner of this phase of the challenge and puts her in the lead of all wizards with 5 points total! The finall part of the Arcane challenge will be tomorrow.

Even Malgant is surprised by Val's intimidating stance. Valanthe puts her warhammer away as she and Mal walk back to the tent, discussing their options in dealing with the giants. Malgant is reminded by a flier that the fighter grand melee is the next day, which also is he last day of the fair.

Vorelle continues to keep an eye on the inebriated Ashira, who after a quick trip to the head, challenges the men to beat her new record! If Ashira's record goes unbeaten the she will win the golden gobbet as her prize.

**** Harpy Fledglings (Faith, Hope, Grace, Bliss, Joy) *****

User her motherly instincts, Vauhwyt gets to the bottom of who stole the Goodwin's notebook. At first Faith tries to Bliss having sneaked the notebook into her stuff, but Joy and Grace rat Faith out.

As Vauhwyt is instructing the fledglings on the acceptable use of picking a pocket, Appolo give his own demonstration and instruction. Hope giggles at Appolo's antics as Vauhwyt does too. Mookie and Appolo banter about drinks and black winged chickens.

" Well I planned to let you take a bath, while I set up some treats I spent the day scouring the fair for. Some different wines, some delicacies from around the Wold, some of which I have not tried either, but they sounded good. After that I could try and rub all that anger induced tension out of your back... "

Upon arriving at the tent Malgant continues," While you get freshened up I'll send messages to Vauhwyt and Rufus and Sally, Making sure they are alright. " Malgant moves around the tent, removing his armor and setting it on the rack, replacing it with an open neck shirt and trousers. He sets a place at the table for both of them and arranges the different dishes the way that each of the chefs had told him was the right way. He selects a wine , opens it and lets it breathe. Then he composes the messages and sends them.

First to Sally. Found some refugees in need of transport. Will convey them to you as soon as possible. Any problems on your end? Are you and Rufus well? Sally may reply with up to 25 words, immediately. Malgant waits a couple of minutes for her reply. If it does not require another sending he then speaks to Vauhwyt.

To Vauhwyt How goes the building and teaching? Are they learning as you hoped they would. What types of defenses have you thought of for the town? Malgant waits for Vauhwyt's reply, then sends to her again We have some refugees. How many are you prepared for? What criteria shall we use for picking them? Do you want any at all yet? to each message Vauhwyt can reply with 25 words or less immediately.

Malgant then treats Valanthe to a beautiful night of wine, good food, and attention.

Aztyr asks for the feather back from the judges, wanting it also as a trophy, of a sort. If they give it back to her, she will find a shop out in the fair that sells silver jewerly and small items. She orders three dozen silver beads, not huge beads, but also not so small as to not to be able to thread her hair into them. She'll also order six mage of gold and a dozen made from copper, that she wants to have tarnished, as the greenish-blue color is nice.
Aztyr makes her way out from the contest area, unhappy with her showing, but satasified that she did win. She is out gathering up some foods for eating back at the tent, when she spots Ashira and Vorelle, whom it took a minute or three to recognize. She was about to call out to them when she noticed that Ashire was drunk... Better to let them go off alone. Aztyr was still feeling out Ashira, unshure just what her story was.
She eventually gets back to the tent and finds Malgant had something set up for him and Valanthe, so she headed just outside, and made herself comfortable while she ate the food she collected.
At about 6pm she cast the protection again on the portion of the tent assigned thier group.
After Malgant got thier dinner finished, Aztyr headed inside to the area she'd claimed and crashed early, it was going to be a long day tommorow.....
In the morning, She renews her Mage armor extending it as usual. She also decides to refresh the privacy spell, rather than to wait until evening, it was just easier to do it in the morning.
She headed to the Arcan contest area early, she wanted to be able to chose a hay pile, one that suited her, hoping that being first currently would give her that privilage. She had very specific wants for her location.
Just before the contest she casts Prestidigitation and uses it to give the cup of water she was drinking a lemony flavor.

"Well, I don't stutter anymore," Vorelle replies to Ashira. "Gods can do that kind of thing, I suppose. I'm less afraid than I used to be." She shakes her head in a kind of disbelief. "I used to be so scared of Targo. And if I saw him now, I'd spit in his eye. Pig."

"Appollo? I don't know why that man does anything. I think he's crazy. I mean, actually crazy, not normal crazy like adventurers get."

"Why Malgant I think your trying to seduce me with hot baths and massages." Valanthe purrs and takes his hand in hes, standing closer as they walked. "I think its working..."

It's been a while since she had a hot bath. Some oils to help keep her skin smooth and healthy. A night of pampering and relaxing. She supposed she could let her guard down this one night.

Vauhwyt gets her messages that evening from Mal. "How goes the building and teaching? Are they learning as you hoped they would. What types of defenses have you thought of for the town?"

Vauhwyt laughs to herself as she mentally frames a reply. It takes fewer words to ask, she thinks, than to answer. She says, "Mud cleared from foundation; stone exposed under cove water. Construction starts tomorrow. Fledglings, troubadour fine. Defenses? We who are here will suffice for now. Thanks."

Then another message: "We have some refugees. How many are you prepared for? What criteria shall we use for picking them? Do you want any at all yet?"

She sighs and answers: "It's been just one day, Mal! Give me a week at least! Look for good hearted fishers and farmers who like isolation, music, and harpies."

She gets the camp ready for sleeping, on the dock she has made over the water. She sets watches. Between the unicorn, Whysper, Appolo, Mookie, and herself, there are plenty of folks to stand three standard watches.

She takes the time to talk with the Unicorn. What is his or her name? Where is it from? She wants to make it welcome.

After the fledglings are asleep, she asks Goodwin for his opinion. Can he help guide them in the right direction? What does he think of them?

Upon return to the tent for the day, Malgant magically contacts Vauhwyt, Rufus, and Sally. Both Sally and Rufus are find. They have started channeling refugees to dirt city, yours will be welcome. Valanthe questions Mal intentions, and having some of her own intentions.

The judges hand the feather back to Aztyr at her request. Doing more shopping, Liontaur runs across
Vorelle and a drunk Ashira, but lets them be. She eventual make her way back to the tent ready to get an early start on the next day's arcane challenge.

Vorelle continues to chat with Ashira.

The night passes without event.

Aztyr gets an early start, getting to the next challenge early. She finds the stacks are assigned at random. The stacks are set 60ft from one another.

The Grand melee will also start soon, the field is setup is simple a large field and ten of the best fighters.

Vauhwyt repiles to Mal's messages, and spends some time chatting with the the Unicorn. The Unicorn reply's "Willow is what other calls me, and my home is in the culvert woods to the north."

Talking to Goodwin, Vauhwyt finds that he believes all intelligent creatures can be taught good, and that the harpy fledglings are young so with luck they can be turned to the light side. That not to say they can't be corrupted at a later date which is the threat of all creatures souls.

Appolo continue to help watch over the fledglings who find his lessons more interesting than Goodwin's.

The night passes without event. Dur goes to hunt a an owl for most of the night.

After a wonderful evening with his love, Malgant rises early to prepare for the Grande Melee. He leaves a note in the tent for everyone to try and hold off on breakfast, he has something planned. He steps outside with his sword and shield, leaving his armor behind for the time being. Walking around, relatively safe and feeling the morning air on his hide had its own benefits. He performed his sword rituals and prayers slowly, making each stroke perfect and praying to Imod that he would be able to fight at his best today. He also knew that today would likely be the day of reckoning for the showman, and he knew that he would need to make his friends ready to keep him from harm. His spells petitioned and Imod's power thrumming within him, Malgant returns to the tent and his friends.
The first act he performs is to gently awaken the rest of his friends. He knows they may have been out late, seeing the sights, drinking far too much ale, whatever. To make amends for waking them early Malgant, Malgant summons a feast meant for heroes (cast Heroes feast You bring forth a great feast, including a magnificent table, chairs, service, and food and drink. The feast takes 1 hour to consume, and the beneficial effects do not set in until this hour is over. Every creature partaking of the feast is cured of all diseases, sickness, and nausea; becomes immune to poison for 12 hours; and gains 1d8 temporary hit points +1 point per two caster levels (maximum +10) after imbibing the nectar-like beverage that is part of the feast. The ambrosial food that is consumed grants each creature that partakes a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls and Will saves and immunity to fear effects for 12 hours.
If the feast is interrupted for any reason, the spell is ruined and all effects of the spell are negated.
). A large table and chairs, cushions for the four legged among them appear. On the table is a breakfast feast. Rashers of Bacon, eggs prepared in a dozen different ways, sausage, fresh fruit of all kinds, pancakes, waffles biscuits and every pastry you can imagine are present. So are hot pots of tea, carafes of hot coffee and decanters of many fruit juices, as well as clear fresh water.
As the others emerge he bids them eat and feel the power of Imod strengthen their hearts minds and souls. He explains that he must attend the Grand Melee and Aztyr must attend the final wizards challenge. The others though, should probably stake out the showman, and see who comes to vent their frustration on the man for losing the Unicorn. Malgant will again pray over them all so that he knows their distress as soon as it happens to them, and they should not be afraid to call out for help should the need arise. He and Aztyr are only moments away and if he senses through Imod's prayer that any of them are being harmed he will come to their aid immediately, contest be damned.

Malgant arrives at the field for the Melee and takes in the area, allowing Imod's wisdom and his knowledge of warfare to dictate where he will make his stand. Imod has provided his with all of the prayers he will need to gain the edge in this fight, he need only strike each opponent to count them out. He sees the field clearly and formulates his plan.

-Just before the contest begins he will cast Greater Magic weapon on his sword, increasing the bonus to +3
-When the word to go has been given, he will allow Imod's obfuscation to overcome him as he casts repulsion on himself, setting the range to 15', just as far as his sword can reach.(13 round duration)
-He will then cast, in order, Entropic shield, Divine Power, Righteous Might,and Divine Favor.

All of this will stop anyone from approaching within 15 feet of him without making a will save at DC21. If any pass that mark he will stop casting and swing at them. Hits base to hits become +29/+24/+19 and his armor class becomes 32 and he gains DR10/evil. He gains 26 more hit points and becomes Huge with a 15' reach. He will also have a 20% miss chance on missile attacks granted to him.

He will then attack each of the opponents once ( splitting his attacks among 3 enemies if there are that many in reach. He will not hit any one of them more than once and if possible will not add his strength to his damage[he is just tapping them]) hoping to knock them from the competition.

He feels this should win the day for him, provided no missiles strike him. ( are missile weapons allowed?)

After Breakfast Aztyr does indeed head to the Arcane contest field, she also smirks a bit at the now shorter pole in the middle of the field. She drinks her lemonade and waits for her haystack to be assigned to her.
Once she has the haystack assigned, she goes out to it and walks slowly all the way around it, viewing it from all sides. She stands there, totaly relaxed standing ten feet from the edge of the haystack, waiting on the word go from the judges table.

As the Command to Start is given She casts the first of two spells.....
Her hands make a intricate pattern and a fiery ring appears in the air just in front of her. Through the open portal steps five Fire Mephits. After they all appear she speaks to them.
"In that stack of hay, right there.(she points to the haystack assigned to her) is a needle. The one of you whom finds it first, and hand it to me will recieve a platinum piece as a reward, and then all of you will be released to return back your your home."
As the Mephits head towards the haystack, each of them breaths on the stack. (ignore the 10d6 roll... though better of it as I rolled.) The mephits each breath in a cone 15 feet long. Doing 1, 1, 6, 7, 8 damage respectivly. It should do nicely to turn the straw into ashes and leave the needle unharmed (a steel needle has hardness of 10 which none of the breaths did that much damage). The mephits continue to rush into the now much shorter pile of ashes and start searching for the needle.
Aztyr watches as the straw becomes a pile of ashes and also heads in after the straw is turned to ash. She uses the Prestidigitation spell to create a small magnetic field to form around each of her hands and also searchs the ashes, waiting for the needle to shoot into her palm.
Once she gets the needle, she will again teleport to the judges table, and hand it in.

(decided to not cast fireball after I rolled, it was then that I thought about the needles hardness. I will still cast the fireball if you require me to, I'll just target it 30 feet into the air and have it just be a spectacular fireworks display)

There's just too much excitement. Vorelle is up too late, and can't get to sleep right away when she does finally turn in. Champ, full of doggy enthusiasm, awakens her early and she stumbles groggily out of the tent.

The fresh morning air helps revive her somewhat, and she spends a little time throwing things for Champ to fetch.

By the time the Heroes Feast is served, she is more than ready to partake. "Thank you, Malgant," she says. "This looks wonderful. Er...is there enough for Champ, too?"

If there is, she feeds him bits of meat and egg from the table. If not, she has a ready supply of Champ food on hand.

Still looking like a red-haired half-elf, she makes a point of strolling past the zoo tent several times, keeping an eye on the showman and who he might be talking to.

A new day!

Vauhwyt is eager to actually build something today! Leaving the fledgelings with Appolo, Whysper, and Willow, she takes the unshrunk boat out to the middle of the cove. She asks Dul for Water Breathe and Free Movement for Goodwin -- again thanking him for all his help and telling him how deeply she is in his debt.

She casts Heroism on the troubadour and gives him the Cirlet. That gives him a +5 to perform checks.

She explains again what she intends: She wants the troubadour to use the lyre to build a tower on the bottom of the lakebed. She envisions an 85-foot high tower, so that the topmost 30 feet will poke out of the water. The tower will be 40 ft in diameter on the bottom, with 15-foot-thick walls, and 30 feet in diameter at the top, with 5 foot thick walls.
The stone blocks used to make the tower will be excavated from passages carved under the tower.

Meanwhile, Vauhwyt and Dul will be using stone shape spells to smooth and seal every square inch of the tower, in and out, to make it waterproof. First priority will be to smooth and seal the places where the stone blocks meet, where water is most likely to seep in, and where joining blocks together will give the structure greater strength.

Dul will also be keeping the water breathe and free movement spells going.

To use the lyre requires a DC18 Perform (Strings) check, once per hour after the first hour. Vauhwyt will make sure that the Troubadour will be wearing the Circlet of Persuasion and a Heroism Spell while playing to give a +5 boost to the checks. She wonders how good this performer is, and how long it will be before missing a check. She wonders how many hours of playing it will take to raise the tower -- if the magical instrument even functions!

Then it is time to swim down! At the bottom, it is Goodwin's turn.

Regarding perform checks for the troubadour ...

He has a +5 from Vauhwyt. He is at least 8th level, so his perform skill, if maxed, is at least 11 ranks. Add in a Chr bonus, say +2 to be conservative, and he should have a check of at least 11+5+2 = +18. Which is to say, he cannot fail the DC18 skill check needed.

Maybe I can get 8 hours of playing from him in a day? With the Lyre, that's the work of 100 humans laboring for 48 days. Enough for a tower?

In the morning, Malgant create a hero's breakfast feast complete with all sorts of good things for everyone. The minotaur protector suggest the others should keep an eye on the showman while he and Aztyr complete their respective challenges.

As the day unfolds, Malgant prepares for the Grand Melee. There are no thrown or missile weapons allowed, only hand held, Natural weapons or unarmed attacks are counted. The first hit you take drops you out of the fight. There are 10 finalist each starting at the edge of the 200ft circular field placing them about 60ft (ooc: D*pi/10 miscalculated was 125ft) apart. In the center of the field is a 10ft mound. Magic to help yourself is find, but you aren't allowed to cast magic on other. Starting with you and moving clockwise there is a human, dwarf, 3 humans, elf, half-orc, Minatur (other than you), and a halfing.

After breakfast, Aztyr makes her way to the arcane challenge. She and the other magic users are assigned a haystack by lots. Once everyone is in position the signal to start is given! Aztyr
summons five fire Mephits to assist her in finding the needle. The impish winged creatures nod and circling the haystack they breath upon it creating a great fire as it burns. (the haystack is 5 in diameter or 60in. At 2hp/inch of thickness it has 120pt. I'll let the fire do double damage to the hay. So 46 out of 120 points on the first round.) Most other spell casters are using various methods to burn the hay. Two have use a gust of wind to blow their stacks apart. Another spell user is casting Heat metal on the pile of hay. Another has polymorhped him self into ta rust monster.

Vorelle still disguised keeps an eye on the showman, who seems to be looking desperate.

Valanthe enjoys the breakfast, looking quite refreshed after a relaxing night. She goes to the Grand Melee to cheer Malgant on. Valanthe is a little curious to see how good the fighters actually are. The elven warrior also keeps an eye out for the merchant who her friends have put in danger. If trouble does show up then her presence will either make them think twice or she will be able to get in a little combat practice.

Round 3 of contest:

Aztyr sees that the straw is refusing to burn as easily as it should. The judges have obviously done something to slow the speed of the burning. She stops the searching and quickly tosses a spell upon herself, she drops a Resist Energy: fire on her to prevent the occasional flame. (20 points vs fire for 130 minutes)
While she's protecting herself, she tells the mephits to keep the burning going on. they keep up the the scortching and the searching. dam : 5, 5, 5, 6, 7 (doubled 56 more damage.)
After Aztyr is protected from fire she wades in, still useing the magnetic effect she created with Prestidigitation spell. Rolled a 20 with my search including a masive bonus of a 1.

Round 4: If Aztyr found the needle, She will teleport to the judges and hand in the needle.
If She didn't find the needle, the Mephits again breath and search. Damage 4, 4, 7, 8, 8 (doubled 62 more damage) As the breats fade away, the stray is now nothing but ashes. The also still search, each of them wanting the prize Aztyr offered.
Aztyr continues to search the pile of ashes ignoring the fire washing over her. (Search 15)

As soon as Malgant and Aztyr are finished with their respective contests, she makes a point of speaking with them. "I'm worried that he might still get hurt because of the unicorn," she says. "We should be on hand just in case."

Vauhwyt works hard on the tower as it rises, casting Stone Shape repeatedly to join the blocks together and seal them so water cannot pass.

She thinks about her plans for the tower. Once the tower shell is created, smoothed and sealed inside and out, then they can set up a pulley and bucket, like a well, and winch all the water out of the inside of the tower. Once the inside is dry, she can cast Wall of Stone as needed to make a hollow 5-foot-diameter interior column and 10-foot wide spiral staircase going from top to bottom. That's the whole 25-foot interior diameter ... 10 feet wide stairs, then 5 feet of interior column, then another 10 feet of stairs. That way even a Taur can go up and down easily.

As the blocks for the tower walls are excavated from the bedrock below the tower, she is careful to direct the bard not to hollow out a big space directly under the tower, for fear it will collapse into the hollow so created. Instead, she directs four 10 ft wide and 10 ft high passages be tunneled out, north, south, east, and west, starting 50 feet under the level at which the mud hits the bedrock, and then gradually sloping up, so that 150 feet on, the top of the passageway will be 30 feet below the stone.

[OOC: This weekend, we took my five-year-old to the aquarium and on a boat ride out on Long Island Sound. It was staffed by biologists who dredged the mud 20 feet below the surface, brought it up, and sorted through it with us. We saw shellfish, mudcrabs, mudworms, etc. We also trawled with a net for 30 minutes and brought up flounder, blue crabs, and other neat creatures. I gotta tell you, that seabed mud is fine, silty, black, and very very dirty. Granted, Long Island Sound is much much more polluted, I imagine, than Blackbird Lake. But it was neat to think about Vauhwyt down there moving earth to push that muck away and expose the bedrock underneath.]

Malgant starts walking out into the arena. His pace is not hurried, he begins reciting his first prayer, Repulsion. He sets the range at the edge of his sword reach, 15 feet. Between keeping an eye on the showman, Valanthe takes time to watch Mal compeate in the grand melee.

As Aztyr's fire Mephits work on burning the hay away, she cast a fire protection spell on herself and then helps with the search. Meanwhile the wizard that turned into a rust-monster kicks the pile around, sniffs about and points as his familiar grabs it. Another spell user who had cast the heat metal, then blows the hay about followed by a wall of ice, he quickly spots the point where it starts to melt. Others work to burn their haystack and search through the ashes. Aztyr quickly find her hot needle and picks it out to show the judges, coming in second to the rust-monster/wizard. Still second is good enough with her other points to win the over all arcane challenge!!!

Vorelle continues to watch over the zoo keeper afraid he would suffer for losing the unicorn.

Walking out into the arena, Malgant cast his repulsion spell. Yelling the human near him charges Mal, only to hit the repulsion and be knocked back. Make AoO. Of the others some move cautiously, others charge. Most notably is the halfling who moves like the wind, tumbles past the other Minatur's reach and strike him with an open hand knocking it back and out of the melee. In the first round 3 of the ten are out, maybe 4 (if you hit the human AC23) Remaining challenger: clockwise human?, dwarf, 2 humans, half-orc, and a halfing.

Now sober, Ashira helps to keep and eye on the zoo keeper. Also, no one has broken her drinking record yet, and it is the last day of the fair. So far the zoo keeper is unharmed, but he looks like he's been losing sleep at night worrying about something.

Az the contest ends, Aztyr pulls out five Platinum pieces and gives one each to the Mephits. " I'm thankfull for your assistance in this contest. It would be only right to reward each of you equally. I may call upon you in the future, but I will warn you, It may be dangerous the next time, this time was more for my own enjoyment, fare thee well, my firey friends." As she finishes speaking to them, they and the coin each recieved vanishes and returns to the elemental plane they came from.
She heads over to the Judges table and that is when she finds out she gained enough points throughout the three days of the contest to win the over all competition.
She learns that the prizes will be given out later in the day once all the contests are over as the final celebration of the fair.

She decides to get herself to the Melee contest before it's over, she wants to watch Malgant to see how he's doing. She'll look for Valanthe, shouldn't be hard with her in deep red plate with the white trin on the plates.

After the contests are over for the fair, She'll head to the Award ceremony.
When her name is called as the Arcane Champion, she makes her way up to the awards platform and bows to the officials and to the audiance. When she is given a chance o speak....
"Thank you for allowing me to compeat in your first Arcane challenge. It is an experiance I'll not soon forget, and when I return to my homeland, I'll be sure to spread the word of your Cities acceptance of those whom are different.
I shall treasure this statue, as it shows I was lucky enough, to have the skills and the spells required. Again, thank you."
She bows after recieving the statue and the wand. She slips the wand into her haversack, but will carry the statue in her the crook of her arm. Allowing those who see her, to admire the trophy and she will accept any compliments with a thank you in return.
The fair is soon to be over, she collects one final bunch of food, those she's discovered she enjoyed during the fair, getting back to the tent before meal time.
She knows her final act will soon be to protect the Zoo keeper, although she still thinks anyone who captures dangerous animals only get's what they deserve...

To the woman's Uncle, Aztyr again thank's him for his hospitality and allows the children to get a close up look at the Wizard statue as it moves around on it's own, staying attached to the base it stands on.
To Ellen, "I'm sorry we wern't a few days earlier, but I hope you will carry on with your life, your children should be a joy to you, as they discover what the future holds for them and for you.
If you ever require me or my friends again, you should get yourself or at least a message to the Inn keeper in Acid City. Once I know you are again in need, I can find you, and get to you one way or another. Be well Ellen, may our paths cross again, but only in times of joy and piece, but if not then, we shall meet again in times of need."

Still keeping an eye on the zoo tent, Vorelle enjoys her last day at the fair. She buys some mysterious meat on a stick, and some sugary pastry that is difficult to eat neatly, but very tasty.

Since he already has a target, Malgant decides to accelerate his time table a little. He needs to be huge, NOW. The Minotaur prays to Imod and is swollen by his God's power ( cast Righteous Might). He grows to Huge size and his body swells with the Power of Imod, making his strength 24 and his con becomes 22. He gains 4 natural armor bonus and loses 1 to hit and 1 from his AC due to being larger and clumsier. He also gains damage reduction 10 vs evil. With his new size he is able to reach the edge of his repulsion field. Once he finishes casting he moves another 20' towards the center, careful not to move closer to the man outside the Repulsion field.

Continutting to move forward, Malgant calls upon Imod to become larger than life. The huge minotaurnow towers over all the others still on the field. The human unable to approach Mal, curses as he moves to fight the dwarf. The others move together as they to move towards the center. The dwarf is hit and a human. The quick halfing zips up and tags the half-orc easy as pie. Remaining challengers are: the human (AC 23 he is the closes at 30ft from Mal), a human, and the halfling.

Having won the competition, Aztyr collects her trophy while giving her modest speech. Many people congratulater her on her achievements. Later she talks with Ellen and her uncle.

During the last day of the fair, Vorelle samples snacks and window shops within view of the doomed zookeeper.

Also, keeping watch on the zookeeper, Valanthe eye the others around him looking for trouble. Striking up a conversation with the zookeeper she ask where he plans to go next. The tired looking zookeeper swallows a little paranoid "errr, ... West, yes that where I'll go next make my way to the taur islands. Excuse me, I'm very busy you know." The man moves off to help with some tear down work.

Wandering about the fair, Ashira watches for priest of Ga'al. She see them talk to people telling them how nice it is to be one with their god, and how fulfilled they are.

In answering the Fledglings questions, Appolo only cuases them to ask more "Magic? Can you do magic too? How do you learn magic? Do fish drink water? What's the largest fish you seen? Dur said there are fish that fly. ...."

After a few days work, Vauhwyt starts to revise her plans as she works.

Aztyr continues to watch the Melee competition, she is obviously she roots for Malgant. She's not shocked or surprised by the spells he's cast, she's seen it up close and personal in life and death situations.
"Jynx, you wanted to know when Malgant became supersized again, so you could see him that way. Well, I think he's out doing himself at the moment, and this time there is not a wizard trying to kill us, so you can get a good close look this time."
Jynx opens his pouch and climbs up onto Aztyr's shoulder and watches the manuvers of the various fighters, or combatants would be a better word for whom was partaking of the challenge. Especially since Malgant would most likely get mad if you called him a fighter, he prefered the title Protector, and from what Aztyr had learned it was mostly for those who followed a God, not just someone who gave lip service to a god.
She watched the various people left and she felt the most dangerous one left was the halfling, it looked like he had training in one of the various unarmed styles, she just hoped Malgant could realize that before everyone decided he was the dangerous one and all worked together to eliminate him before settling it amung themselves...

( just a FYI, Aztyr has switched back to her Ring of Resistance, removing her feather fall ring )

Appolo swims around dives a couple more times,soon there'sa large fish for each of the Harpie chicks.The fish flap arouns on the dock in front of them. Appolo gets out of the water"No I can't do magic you'll have to ask Vauhwyt about that.Largest fish,well there was this Whale overa hunder feet long. Well yes and no the fish that fly don't fly like you do.What they do is jump out of the water and use very long fins to glide fora couple minutes before diving back into the water.Now aren't you going to eat your fish while they're fresh."

The liontaur is happy to see the harpie chicks with Appolo, but she reminds them to eat like civilized people, and she helps prepare their food -- very rare, she knows -- in small bite-sized pieces with a fork and spoon. No fingers, no mess, and no gulping!

Vauhwyt spends time with the fledglings. She is happy to teach them some tricks. Frankly, she is not sure they have the aptitude for sorcery, and it will likely take a long time to get them ready for it even if they are, but she is nonetheless glad to do tricks and begin the task of teaching. Especially laced with tales of all the good that magic can do in the Wold.

She tells Appolo, Goodwin, Dul, and the unicorn about her scaled down plan to make an outlier building, 40' x 40' x 20' on pilings five feet above the water line. She thinks that with Godwin's and Dul's help, she can do that and a small garden in 9 or 10 days, maybe.

She says the same to Mal if he Sends to her.

Malgant watches the halfling, clearly a monk. Maybe he was even a Hand of Domi. Wouldn't that be perfect, the last two competitors both being followers of the same god. With only four competitors left, Malgant stops praying and gets down to business. He holds his action and waits for an opponent to come within striking distance of him. If more than one opponent approaches he waits to see if either one saves vs the prayer keeping them at bay, he would then strike at that opponent.

Aztyr and Jynx watch the finale rounds of the grand melee rooting for Malgant, but worried about the halfling opponent.

Valanthe is convenienced something is up with the zookeeper.

Malgant stops praying and gets down to business. He holds his action and waits for an opponent to come within striking distance of him. The nearest, human has already been repulsed by Mal's magic, so he moves against the other human kocking him out of the fight with a quick hit. The halfling monk then moves with lighting speed and takes out the remaining human. Now only Malgant and the Halfling monk are left. The huge minotaur with Imod's shield stands his ground ready to strike. The halfling takes his time and move up to just 10ft out of Mal's reach (~30ft away), he obviously has a readied action. The small halfling looks up at the huge minotaur as he grins "My you're a big one. Nice shield! Look I can tell you are honorable, so if you want to withdraw now and save yourself the embarrassment of being beaten by one so small you may do so now." The halfling monk makes a small bow while he wait still ready and in a defensive stance for your reply.

As Appolo answers more of the little one's questions, the girls start to spin around and around until they get dizzy and fall down giggling.

Continuing to work on the stronghold and with the girls, Valanthe discusses the new plans and schedule. The Fledglings try to eat with the funny utensils , but easily get frustrated revert to using hands and claws often complaining "Why we do things the hard way? Fingers so much easier."

Malgant looks at the monk and knows that the contest will be over as soon as the two of them finish talking. He keeps his guard up and begins to address the monk.
" I can see you are honorable too by the magnanimous offer you make to me. But I think that I will face you. I was taught there was never dishonor in fighting your best against a worthy opponent. You sir are most definitely a sizable obstacle to overcome in this competition, despite your short stature. There are many things I would like to speak to you about. But I fear they will have to be after we give this crowd a show. May the best contestant win. If you would consent to staying your fist for a moment so that we may duel on an even footing, I will dismiss this barrier and we can continue. Agreed?"
If the halfling agrees, Malgant will dismiss the Repulsion prayer. This is an act of faith on his part since it requires him to give up his ready position. Once the spell is dismissed he will again assume a ready stance, holding his action as he was before.

The halfing Monk, nods "I though you might have a magical barrier, the way the human bounced off you earlier. By all means, I will wait." the halfling waits until he sees you are once again standing ready, " If you are ready now?" Once Mal signals he is ready the monk moves with blinding speed closing the 30ft distance with a spring attack, He is fighting defensively using combat expertise to add to his armor. The spring attack negates any attack of opportunity, but Malgant can take his readied standard action as soon as the halfing moves into range.

If Malgant fails to hit, the Halfling kicks out (hit ac 28 ) missing the Minotaur with his first hit. The Halfling completes his move springing back out to 30ft from Mal.

With a thought Malgant activates his armor. He had seen it before, but now sees it close up, the monk is a blur! He brings his sword and shield up and swings, missing by a fair margin. Now that he sees how fast the monk really is he KNOWS that he fights a truly worthy opponent. He takes advantage of the monk's shorter reach and charges to within 15' of the monk, using his momentum to gain attack advantage. Malgant calls out to Imod for help ( strength domain power adds + 13 to strength for 1 round) and invokes his armor again for an extra burst of speed. This time his swing is acurate enough to catch the halfling.( I do minimum damage unless you want me to roll it. However if he is evil I cannot control how the holy effect on my sword will act.)

Vauhwyt start to go with the old, "My girls will NOT eat like animals and slobs! You will be graceful and clean, not ravenous like beasts!"

But before she can raise her voice too loudly, she looks at Godwin. She asks if his calm voice of wisdom can help the girls to understand why they should be civilized, polite, obedient, and gentle.

Aztyr watched the Monk move, calling him greased lightning would be about as close as one could get to describing how fast he was. Aztyr was amazed that the monk missed, she was even more shocked that Malgant missed his first strike as well, but she was prepared for his follow up move and had said so to those around her.
"Malgant will follow that little guy up, but watch how he stops at a range that most wouldn't think was close enough."
Just as she was finishing up speaking, Malgant made his move and his follow up attack, which appeared to contact the Halfling....

Malgant's counter attack hits the halfling monk wounding him. The halfling acknowledges the hit, "Sight, Let me be the first to congratulate you! You're a worthy opponent." The monk bows to Malgant.

The judges declare Malgant the winner of the fighter challenge. Over then next hour Malgant, Aztyr , and Ashira are awarded the prize trophies for their respective challenges as part of the closing ceremonial

The fair is effectively over. When the group get back to the Uncle's tent there is a group of some 30 refuges waiting for Malgant, "We've decided to take you up on your offer of a place to relocate."

Mini Float

With the harpy girls wanting to rebel against using silverware, Vauhwyt start to crack down, but then turns to Goodwin to intervene. The bard takes the tack of redirecting the girls by singing some light harted songs about beer and Greensleeves.

As the gather to collect thier trphies Aztyr congratulates Malgant and Ashira on thier victories.
When they get back to the tent, "Looks like we got a group to escort, we can get back afterwards for those Giants. Or are you going to trust them to make it to where we are sending them?"
Aztyr hated decisions like this, she'd speak for thier group, but this was Mal's and Vauhwyt's idea to rescue those who wanted to leave. She'd back them up 110%, but the major decisions where thiers for now.

The house Vauhwyt is making consists of three 40 ft by 40 ft levels. A central stair goes from the lowest level to the middle level, and four narrow stairs ascend to the top level.

Eventually, the house will be home to four families of immigrants, a farmer, two fishers, and a crafter. The lowest level is work space, the middle level is residences, and the top level is open to the sky, and can be used for cooking or any number of activities.

The lowest level is five feet above the water level. It does not have walls, just pillars and baluster-like supports. There are four work areas.

Lowest Level.

The middle level is 15 feet above the water level. The residences are divided by stone walls. The outer wall is also stone, except where balusters make a sort of window, with wood shutters for rain or privacy. Within each residence, internal walls are wood frames and canvas.

Middle Level.

The upper level (the roof) is 25 feet above the water level. A five foot high railing extends all around the top. There are four places where narrow stairs come from above. There are planters to divide the roof into four areas, one per family. There is a pedastal in the center that will later seat a statue.

Top Level.

The scale is 2.5 ft per square.

Malgant lets out a breath he didn't know he was holding as his sword contacts and strike a blow to the halfling. Noting that the sword did not blaze to life, the Protector's assumption that the halfling was not evil is confirmed. Stretching out a hand the protector helps the halfling to his feet and also heals any wound he may have inflicted( spontaneously cast cure light wounds using entropic shield, healing 11 points of damage). He buys the halfling a drink after the award ceremony and talks to him about several topics. Combat, training, discipline and a bit about the Ga'alian tax and the refugees, hoping to enlist the monk's help once he returns to wherever he calls home.
Once Malgant and his friends return home to find the refugees waiting for them, Malgant turns to Aztyr and asks" How many people can you transport tonight without overdoing it?" While she thinks about it Malgant recites a few prayers to better group the refugees.
First he casts detect evil. If ANY of the refugees turn out to be evil he will pull them from the group and send them on their way. He will help refugees, but someone that the spell detects as evil is beyond his help. He will not allow them a chance to spread their evil to wherever the refugees head to. Their mercy tonight is that he does not have them arrested or bring them to justice himself.
Second he casts detect good and pulls those who are good aside as possible candidates for Vauhwyts villa on the lake. The good hearted ones he will ask questions of. Do they have any skills, are they tolerant of others not like themselves. If asked will they keep a secret. Once he has these answers he will send to Vauhwyt his results.
The rest can be safely transported to Rufus and Sally's care to be placed on ships to other lands from Acid city.

Aztyr thinks about it for a few minutes before replying to Malgant, she knew it was dangerous to get drained of too much magic.
"I can take 12 or so this evening, It will drain a bit of my remaining magic, but not down to the bottom of the well. I can either go to the place we set up to relay or to Vauhwyt's camp, I know both locations."
Aztyr casts a spell, and her eyes glow with a bit of unearthly light and then fades to her normal yellow/green color (cast Detect Magic), and looks over the refugees. She's initially looking for any magic auras. Like if someone was disgusing themselves. She will spend time deciphering any auras she does find. She has 13 minutes, or 120 rounds to look them over.

Appolo approaches Vauhwyt"I hope you aren't planning on moving refugees here.I mean with the harpy chicks and the nature of the forrest.I don't think having alot refudees running atound here would bea good idea.Plus I thought this place was going to be our headquarters.I think it's best we kep it as secret as possible.Like I said the forest might not likea colony of people living so clos to it.The people might not like our girls either.""

Vauhwyt grimaces. "Yes, you are right, Appolo, but we need food here, and someone has to look after the place when we are not around. At first, I was just thinking about two families, four to six people each."

"See this house I'm building right now?" She refers to the drawings and plans she has made. "It is designed to hold four families. Two fishers, a farmer, and a crafter. Eventually, I hope to make four of these houses, for a total of 16 families. Our house and headquarters will be in the middle, with one house like this at each compass point around it."

"Even if there are people here, that's still a secret. They won't be going anywhere, after all. Before any come near, I intend to cast a permanent illusion to hide the cove. The mouth of the cove will look like land. Residents will think they are in a lake, not a cove. Anyone out of the cove will just see shore and trees."

"The harpy chicks are one reason I want there to be people around. They have to learn to be in society, to act well around others. They will do better exposed to regular people who treat them as equals. And if the people do not like them, well, we'll have to screen them before we bring them on board."

"Yes, the forest is dangerous, of course. That's a great defense for us. If all these folks stay on the house, the gardens, and fishing boats in the cove, they will be fine with the forest. All they have to do is stay off shore, unless Dul is there to escort them (or one or three of us)."

"But what if the forest does not like it? Good point. Let's ask Dul."

The liontaur seeks out the druid and explains the house she is building. She asks him what the forest would think or do if she made a total of four of those houses, holding a village of maybe 75 people, with another building in the middle for the adventurers' long-term home. None would ever set foot on shore.

Vauwhyt tells Appolo, "But I would not want these folks sharing a house with the harpies. That would be too close. And I can't cast the illusion, yet. I need to gain a little experience and make a second house before we can bring any refugees here."

"In the meantime, Mookie can take care of the girls in this first house while we adventure a little more."

Well, I finally updated my PC sheet, including the last set of loot and recent expenditures. See link above.

FYI, I've spent 4,000 on Godwin's services, and another 5,000 on the house. Plus I marked off 500 gp for normal gear maintenance and resupply, including a new rowboat. Plus the Lyre.

Mal, I got my own rod of Lesser Extend, so I don't need to borrow yours when I cast Greater Magic Item for you.
