Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 d20+5=7 ; d20+9=27 ; Tuesday August 17th, 2010 9:00:04 PM
Upon hearing the party return Beri leaves his room and joins the others. As he talks he hands out the remaining keys to the shop to the last of the party members.
I see our guest is back to his normal self. We are happy to let you go on your way, but I was hoping you could answer a couple questions. Do you know remember anything about the warehouse we found you in or the people involved with holding you there? Any knowledge of the painting world we fought the mind flayer in or the even worse terror that was inside that temple? And you left were Yoseph and Arriet captured or killed for betraying Vellinius?
Diplomacy=7... not change :( Sense Motive = 27
ooc: There was not indication that this happened to Yoseph or Arriet, I just have been suspicious that in the end the mind flayer had their kids and they were missing.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Tuesday August 17th, 2010 10:08:36 PM
Bosk hands Roy back his bow. You are still recovering. Stay with us tonight, and you can leave tomorrow. What type of hosts would we be if let you leave before you were fully healed?

ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Wednesday August 18th, 2010 8:03:08 AM
OOC: Nick wrote that he was having trouble with Wold access on the 13th. We double checked his rights out, and I e-mailed him on the 17th and the 18th. I have not heard anything yet. I hope to get him back here asap.
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Wednesday August 18th, 2010 2:54:49 PM
Roy looks at Maikill and Ransy -- and seems confused. "I shot you? I promise not to do that again. Um, well, sorry."
Ransy asks about Yoseph, and Roy's confusion deepens. "Yoseph? ..."
Beri adds to his mental dismay and disarray. "Arriet? Painting? Vellinius?"
He shakes his head hard and struggles. "There was a mind flayer ... and children ... We were trapped together ... you! You were with me! And we got out, and you didn't give me any clothes! I was so angry. What was that about?"
Roy sits down and puts his head in his hands. "Maybe I should get a good night's sleep, he said. He shakes his head again. Then he leaps up. "Or I should just get out of here! Start over, somewhere new! That's what that Healer said to do. 'Get away,' he told me.
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35 Wednesday August 18th, 2010 5:01:48 PM
Ransy answers Roy: "Yes, I was trapped in the lockers too! But I couldn't give you clothes then; they had taken all our money away, remember? So I didn't have a farthing on me at that time, nothing to buy clothes for you with. Honestly, I thought our rescuers would solve that problem for you. But at first they didn't even give me my clothes back. It was only after I healed a mole, the brain mole, that I got my own stuff back. I still think it strange that someone took your clothes and gear out of the locker. I mean, our kidnappers weren't interested in our stuff, only in our money. So who took your clothes, I wonder. Well, perhaps we'll never know; this is a strange town. But we could answer some questions if we stake out the warehouse. We'll catch the thieves sooner or later. Don't you want to be around when that happens?"
Mara Szabo (AC 17, HP 31/36) Wednesday August 18th, 2010 8:27:55 PM
Mara stands back and watches.
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Wednesday August 18th, 2010 8:51:50 PM "Well good then, I not like arrows. Axe more fair, stay close to enemy, give them chance hit too. Arrow sneaky, not nice."
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Wednesday August 18th, 2010 9:10:32 PM If you look around, you will see that the one who refused you clothes is no longer among our numbers. He was a very distrusting person, though reliable in combat. He had a strong concern that you might have had had a connection to Vellinius... that's the mind flayer who had possessed you and the children. I don't know if the mind flayer had implanted it's spawn in you prior to us rescuing you or if it happened after you left, but it took all of us to take him down and rescue you.
ooc: Did my sense motive show that Roy genuinely does nothing about this?
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Thursday August 19th, 2010 7:24:53 AM
Sorry, Beri, I forgot to mention the sense motive check. In fact, it is clear that Roy remains somewhat damaged goods after his ordeal. He is telling the truth, as best he can, and is genuinely confused. Evidently this Healer person somehow urged him to change his location and recover, probably somewhere peaceful -- although you who were there did not hear the Healer say anything to him.
Roy answers Ransy, "No, no, please. I don't want to go back there. I just want to get on with my life and forget all this ever happened."
In answer to Beriothian, Roy says, "Well, uh, well, I'm glad that thing is dead. Thanks ... sure, thanks for that and for rescuing me. But I just want to forget about it and get going away. My memories of this whole thing are ... shaky, and bad. Let me put them behind me."
Zeoll Thursday August 19th, 2010 7:29:34 AM
The liontaur tells Maikill, "I like yourr philosophy! You stay nearr the enemies, and I'll stay rright behind you!" He grins at the half-orc barbarian.
Zeoll turns to Roy, and says to him gently, "Okay, okay. But you'rre in no shape to rrush off rright now. Spend the night with us, like my big frriend Bosk herre suggests, and see how you feel in the morrning."
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Thursday August 19th, 2010 6:38:02 PM
Maikill grins back.
"Yes Zeoll, it good you watch my back. We fight good together."
he says oblivious to Zeoll's real meaning
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Thursday August 19th, 2010 8:39:01 PM I know how you feel. The mindflayer attacked me from behind a couple weeks ago and almost made an afternoon snack of my heads contents. It's only now that he's gone that I'm able to start putting it behind me. I count myself lucky that I didn't have to witness the events caused by the creature the mindflayer was serving. I have no problem with letting you head out, though I would remind you that you needed to be supported on your walk back to the shop, and you haven't had a real meal in a couple days. I would suggest that you at least wait until after lunch before heading out, it should be ready shortly.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Thursday August 19th, 2010 11:20:00 PM
Bosk hangs back and wonders how Roy will react when they bring up the reward. Perhaps they should offer him some gold to help him get back on his feet.
Zeoll Friday August 20th, 2010 7:38:17 AM
The liontaur offers Maikill a sincere hand. "I look forrward to the battles we will face togetherr, my new frriend!
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Friday August 20th, 2010 7:58:20 AM
Roy agrees with Beriothian that he will stay for lunch, and probably for the night. The morning is soon enough to leave. He has no desire to confront anyone.
Maikill and Zeoll have a conversation. Bosk wonders how to bring up the topic of the reward. Mara remains quiet.
So what, your substitute DM wonders, is next? The reward? A day spent in peaceful relaxation, maybe? When was the last time you had five minutes to sharpen your weapons, fix that buckle on your armor, or get some training time in at the WLA (a requirement you may have been neglecting)? Do let's see you guys initiate some actions!
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Friday August 20th, 2010 10:51:03 AM
ooc: Nope, we haven't forgotten about the WLA. Originally Jerry was going to take a couple weeks to have people wrap up their side quests. Beri doesn't actually have anything specific planned so I was planning on heading to the WLA while Bosk did his avenger stuff, Maikill hunted down his uncle, etc.
Besides doing training, while there I was also planning on using their services to find see if they knew anything of the monster we lost the children to and the ghosts in Valla's tower (I was also planning to see if Valla still owned the tower or if it was for sale again so that we didn't lose such a cool side quest). And if Alistair (or Grendel) grant me an audience I would stop by to see them as well.
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35 Friday August 20th, 2010 11:46:47 AM
Ransy will join Beriothian in doing some training at the WLA. He will also set up a note there, for members' eyes only, asking whether anyone knows about kidnappers who lock away their hostages in lockers in a warehouse. He will also visit a guardhouse, politely ask to see a leader of the guard and ask him what it would take (in terms of money and support from authoritative people) to establish a regiment of guards in Mudtown as lawkeepers. Has it been tried before? If not, why not? If so, why did it fail?
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Friday August 20th, 2010 4:23:43 PM
ooc: not really sure how Maikill can hunt down his uncle w/o a lot of dm time, which would take up group time here. Think he will be an ongoing occasional story line now with Jim gone and no permanent DM for now.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Sunday August 22nd, 2010 9:04:07 PM
ooc: I don't actually know, but my guess is that that was actually the reason Jerry was going to do have us work on these side quests, because this way we can put off starting a new module until we have our permanent DM. Of course, it all depends on what our current DM prefers.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Sunday August 22nd, 2010 9:10:34 PM
My plans are to collect the reward, go through the avenger initiation, visit the WLA for training and a bardic lore check on the curved daggers, and eventual wold domination.
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Sunday August 22nd, 2010 9:37:05 PM
BTW, Bosk, did you go say "SOLD" regarding the loot at the CC? I did not get an e-mail, did I?
Zeoll Monday August 23rd, 2010 9:57:35 AM
Zeoll stays with Roy while he rests and sleeps. He ponders what kind of animal companion he should summon next. Maybe a wolf? Something with wings?
When he has a free moment out of Roy's hearing, he asks his friends, "Arre we going to take Rroy to that innkeeper fellow to claim the rrewarrd? What kind of witness will he make? If Rroy is dead set on leaving tomorrrow, we better go right away in the morning?"
Zeoll Monday August 23rd, 2010 3:22:03 PM
Zeoll also spends some time working on his garden. He invites anyone who is around of his new friends to lend a hand or to spend some time sparring.
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Monday August 23rd, 2010 3:26:23 PM
On this day, you leave the store in the morning, see the Preacher in the street, meet the Healer, and get Roy cured (although evidently there is some lingering damage). You all meet back at the store.
Roy wants to leave, but is convinced to stay to rest and eat. Zeoll stays with him.
Ransy and Beriothian spend the rest of the day at the WLA, training. Ransy posts a note asking for leads in getting info about the kidnappers. [OOC: Make a Gather Info check, with a +2 Aid Another bonus from the WLA in general].
Ransy also speaks with a Hook City guardsman about providing constabulary services to Mudtown. The answer gives him the sense that, if the constable represents common opinion of Hook City citizens generally, then (a) there is nothing worth guarding or patrolling in Mudtown, (b) the people there are not even citizens, and do not deserve any such consideration, and (c) no one in his right mind would pay for it. Legalistically, seeing as Mudtown is not even in Hook City, there is nothing stopping anyone from setting up whatever police or vigilante operation you might like. Except the denizens of that sink hole might not cotton to it.
By the way, given Ransy's busy activities in gathering info, he really does not get any training in. Beri does get a day to his credit, if he stays until dark and gets home a little late.
Bosk takes on the chore of visiting the Catacombs and selling the party's loot. He mentions going to fetch the reward as his next priority.
Maikill has a half a day of activity to use up.
[OOC: I have heard nothing from Cesar, and I unfortunately just got an e-mail message from Mara bowing out of the game. So I am giving them both honorable exits at the current time. We'll assume they make their departures today, for some personal reasons that give them the chance to return later if things work out.]
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Monday August 23rd, 2010 5:20:26 PM
Maikill spends the day sharpening his axe and dagger, oiling his rhino hide armor, and carefully storing his potions so that he has two at hand and the rest wrapped in cloth and put into his shoulder pack to prevent breakage.
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Monday August 23rd, 2010 6:11:42 PM
OOC to Maikill -- okay, that catches you up for today. What about tomorrow? Roy is leaving in the morning unless you all give him some reason to stay.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Monday August 23rd, 2010 8:46:45 PM
Beriothian returns to the WLA and spends the evening training. For hours he practices jumping onto small tables, jumping down stairs, and landing into a roll. At the end of the day they tell Beri to jump, and at each jump to shout "How high".
After about five jumps one of the officers interupts him: Are you really that dense boy? Quit clowning around and just tell us how many stinkin' inches your jumping each time!
ooc: Bosk, I'm not sure how much help our witness will be without any memory... kind of defeats the purpose in bringing him.

Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35 d20+4=14 ; Tuesday August 24th, 2010 7:48:50 AM
Gather info = 14 (including WLA +2) It seems Ransy gets only vague or no hints about the kidnappers at the WLA.
Ransy thinks the Hook City guardsman is rather prejudiced against Mudtown, it almost sounds like disdain. He says that you can't expect people to grow in respectable citizenship, if you deny them the benefits of the law. After a period of about three years, the citizens will probably appreciate those benefits themselves, and then they will pay for the guards themselves, through taxes. So, no, you don't have to be out of your mind to pay for a regiment of guards in Mudtown. You just have to have faith in the future.
Next day, Ransy will go to the WLA to exercise his climbing skill.
Zeoll and his dog d20+13=30 ; Tuesday August 24th, 2010 3:07:11 PM
At Bosk's urging, in the morning Zeoll tries to talk with Ray. He speaks softly and gently, using his best manner. He asks how Roy is feeling, and how his head is doing. He explains about the reward, and asks Roy if he would come to tell what he has seen.
Diplomacy 30.

OOC: Amid all the player (and DM) shuffles in this game, I am pleased to welcome back Marty, playing Valla. Please feel free to post anytime.
YESTERDAY
Maikill spends the balance of the day getting his gear in good repair for his next adventure.
Ransy tries to pick up kidnapping news at the WLA and finds a notice posted there: "Please help us find our missing daughter, a young human lady, fair of skin and hair, wearing a blue dress and grey apron, named Tallie. Last seen in Mudtown. Contact Harls the Cooper on Maple Lane." Ransy recognizes the street as one that is near the edge of Hook City, near the gate to Mudtown.
Beriothian trains hard at the WLA.
Zeoll works on his garden.
Bosk has a quiet word with his friends, asking that they approach Roy.
TODAY
In the morning, Ransy considers training at the WLA, although now he also has a possible kidnappers lead.
Zeoll talks with Roy, and convinces him to tell his story one last time. But after that, Roy is set on leaving town and making a new start in his life somewhere else.
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 31 /35 Tuesday August 24th, 2010 4:07:24 PM
Ransy tells the others what he has heard. "It's a slim chance, but it's better than nothing. Who wants to go with me to Harls the Cooper on Maple Lane. Even if it is not connected to our kidnappers, it's still worth the effort to save an innocent girl, Tallie. On the other hand, it may also be a ruse by the kidnappers themselves, to attract goodies like me and kidnap them once they show in Maple Lane. For that reason, I'd rather not go alone."
Ransy will postpone his training efforts to go to Harls the Cooper, but only if some of the others go with him.
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Tuesday August 24th, 2010 4:22:25 PM "Maybe save girl? I go."
Maikill prepares for a fight, donning his rhino armor, his pack and grabbing his axe.
"Maybe we take Roy first to see man at shop, they Roy can go where he want and we go rescue girl."
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Tuesday August 24th, 2010 8:06:09 PM
Beriothian walks into the kitchen, his legs obviously stiff from yesterdays training. I still need to to put in some more time at the WLA today, but it sounds like the place you are heading to is on the way. I doubt it's a ruse by the kidnappers, after all nobody we rescued was caught through such methods, but that doesn't mean the kidnappers won't be keeping on the house to watch for trouble. After we talk to them I can head into the city for the rest of my training.
Valla (I need links to my CS!!) Tuesday August 24th, 2010 8:06:45 PM
After running franticly through Mudtown all alone for a while now. Valla lost track of time, lost his appatite and has dehydrated himself almost to the point of death. Having been beaten, scared, robbed and traumatized, Valla finds his way back to the shop, his eyes blood shot, his hair cropped out in random places. He now looks like he has the mange. His robes are ragged and torn, his leather boots are black and ripped to pieces. He has no pack, nor weapons. Even his shabby armor is gone. Only the outline of his spell book is seen beneath his robes. The elven wizard has obviously seen better times, even when he was knocked out. As he stumbles to the door of the shop, he thrusts it open. Stepping inside he is relieved to see his old friends, and a few new faces.
I had to run... They chased me... My tower.... Death... is all he was able to spit out in a shaky voice at that. Seconds later he slumps to the ground, sweating and shaking.

Zeoll agrees with Maikill -- he wants to collect the reward before Roy leaves -- and this stinky mind flayer head is grossing him out and insulting his nose. Then the prodigal son returneth!
The liontaur rushes up to Valla and embraces him. "My frriend! We werre quite concerrned! Look at you. Come on, herre get cleaned up and have a rrest. Tell us what happened to you!"
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 34 /35 d20+5=11 ; Wednesday August 25th, 2010 3:32:36 PM
Ransy tries to catch Valla as he falls and carries him to a bed. He'll try to diagnose what's ailing him. Heal = 11. If it's just hitpoint loss, he'll heal him for 2 hp by laying hands on him. Anyway he says: "Valla, you can stay and rest here; we're going to Hook City to visit parents whose daughter is missing, probably kidnapped in Mudtown. We're still looking for the kidnappers who took me, Cesar and Roy. If you're feeling well again, you can join us on Maple Lane, look for Harls the Cooper".
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Wednesday August 25th, 2010 3:35:09 PM Ransy is all set to go to Harls the Cooper's house on Maple Lane, near Mudtown (but not in it).
Maikill wants to go to collect the reward first, before Roy leaves.
Beriothian follows Ransy.
Then Valla arrives, out of breath and looking the worse for the wear!
Bosk, back from the Catacombs, divides the loot and does not offer an opinion on what to do next.
Zeoll agrees with Maikill and then welcomes Valla.
So, what's it to be? Reward or Tallie? Seeing as if you do not try to collect the reward now, you may be missing your chance, your kindly substitute DM suggests the former. But talk with Valla, make a decision. Do let's move the action along!
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 34 /35 Wednesday August 25th, 2010 4:10:03 PM
"Okay, we'll try to collect the reward first; but as has been said, now that Roy has lost his memory, it's probable that we won't get it anyway ... but a try will not harm; let's all go, perhaps that barkeeper will be impressed by our numbers. Zeoll, will you do the talking? Then we go to Tallie's parents, yes?"
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Wednesday August 25th, 2010 6:02:50 PM "Valla, who hurt you? Tell me, I find them make them pay for hurt."

Zeoll Wednesday August 25th, 2010 11:50:22 PM
The liontaur is happy to talk, but asks, "What should I tell him? I wasn't even herre forr all of it!"
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 34 /35 Thursday August 26th, 2010 7:43:53 AM
Ransy says: "Okay, I'll tell you what you should say, but not how you should say it. We are counting on your golden tongue and diplomatic language use to get us the reward. But here is the contents, which should be conveyed to the tavernkeeper: two days ago a few members of our group (point to Beri and Bosk) came here to collect the reward, which you promised to those who would slay or incapacitate the brain eater. They told you that we've killed the mind flayer who's been active in this town. I have understood that you've refused to yield the reward, on the reasonable ground that they had no proof of slaying that monster. We respect that decision; in similar situations we would require proof as well. However, there was an eye-witness, a person who's not part of our group and who will not share in the reward in any way. That's why we've returned today. We have brought him with us, here he is, his name is Roy. The problem is that Roy was infected with a worm in his brains. The mind flayer exerted absolute control over Roy while the worm was in him. We've, of course, cured Roy of this worm, by means of a brain mole who can extract and eat such worms. However, when we did so, Roy's brain was apparently damaged and he became catatonic. Now, a healer has helped us to bring him back to full consciousness. However, his memory was damaged as well and some of the recent happenings are gone. However, we think that enough of his memory remains to establish beyond reasonable doubt that a) he was captured and controlled by an evil monster; and b) that he was liberated from that monster by our group. If you doubt that, you can question him yourself. All in all, that should be enough to establish beyond reasonable truth that we are speaking the truth. We really have killed the mind flayer."
AFter this lengthy exposition, Ransy adds: "I hope this works, but don't put too much faith in it, my friends!"
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Thursday August 26th, 2010 8:05:14 PM Oh, and somebody really should make sure that Roy is willing to come with us and really does remember something that would indicate we did stop the murders.

At the tavern, Zeoll approaches the owner. He explains the situation and offers to let Roy act as a witness. Diplomacy 22.
[OOC: Is this the Inn of the Poison Frog? Hard to make heads or tails of the archives quick like. What IS the owner's name? And why is he offering such a huge reward? Any one have an idea?]
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Friday August 27th, 2010 5:14:16 PM
Ransy suggests going to the inn [The Poison Frog Inn?] to collect the reward. He asks Zeoll to do the talking.
Maikill, a little more than somewhat upset at Valla's state, presses him for details on his absence. Valla evidently cannot yet bear to speak of it.
Beriothian is ready to come along, but he is wary of saying the wrong thing. Bosk too.
Zeoll feels unsure of what to say, although he is willing to say it.
Ransy offers some great detail on that to the liontaur. [OOC: Thanks! I prefer not to be a prime mover of events while also DMing!]
Beriothian suggests to Zeoll that Roy needs to be handled as delicately as the innkeeper. Zeoll nods at that.
Zeoll works his diplomatic magic on Roy, and, to a lesser-but-still-compelling extent, on the innkeeper.
The liontaur's dulcet tones, used to give life to Ransy's very eloquent ideas, seem to have an elucidative effect on the innkeeper's understanding of the matter. Especially when Roy joins in to say that yes, this is the head of the mind flayer that held him captive, and yes, these heroes killed it, and yes, they freed him of its influence and helped him to get healing.
"Well, that all seems clear," says the owner of the establishment. "If you'll just hand over the head, I have the reward right here for you." He fetches a jingling bag of something heavy from under the bar.
[OOC: My apologies for slow posting recently, friends. I am running two games, and I want to do justice to both.]
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Friday August 27th, 2010 9:11:40 PM
Beriothian is thrilled to see the group finally handing over possession of the decomposing head, and wonders momentarily whether the catacombs sells a masterwork air freshener. Well, if our chores are done here I'm ready to head over to Maple Lane.
ooc: Zeoll, the short version of the reward is that with each victim who was found with his brain removed the reward for putting a stop to it went up. The innkeepers didn't give his name when we met. Also, I don't know if the innkeeper put up the initial reward, but I know others chipped in as well. Chipper Wanes, for example, was being held for the murders prior to the final murder, but after the last one he was freed at which point he chipped in bringing the reward up to 12,000gp. (for reference that was on Wednesday December 23rd, 2009 5:03:10 PM )
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 34 /35 Monday August 30th, 2010 5:25:29 PM
Ransy thanks the tavern owner and later thanks Zeoll for his words. He says: "I agree with Beri; let's go to Maple Lane, to solve the mystery of the kidnappers. A lost girl is as good a lead as the warehouse with the lockers. So let's go! By the way, there is now a lot of treasure to be divided. Perhaps we can go to the catacombs later and buy some stuff. Ransy said the notice said that we need to contact Harl's the Cooper on Maple Lane. I suggest we split up with some of of going there while the others go to the catacombs. For all we know the she already returned or was rescued, and if not we want to take the job before someone else takes it. We also should go to the catacombs right away incase we need to travel. So with mixed and confused feelings, let me bid you farewell, with a sincere, heartfelt, and kindly wish that our paths never cross again."
The man walks off, out of Mudtown, and out of our story, at least for the present.
With no one around to overhear, you discuss your next move. Shopping while you have a chance? Or right to the House of Harls? You note that the reward sack contains 5,000 gp.

I suggest we give it to Valla for now; perhaps he can use it later on in the interest of the group. Or we could try to sell it to Master Alistair when we meet him again. Anyway, I see that all in all there's more than 11,000 gp in loot. I think it's very difficult to determine the share due to Valla and Zeoll. Zeoll has shared the same danger as the rest of us in confronting the mindflayer. Valla has had a difficult night in Mudtown, Perhaps we should share liberally, Valla 1000 gp and the scroll, the rest each a fifth of the money, that's about 2000 gp each to Zeoll, Bosk, Maikill, Beri and me. But let's go to Harls the Cooper, while Bosk visits the catacombs."

Bosk is glad to get rid of the smelly head, and is glad that he thought to chop it off. Immediately the Horned Cleric notices the sack is a little light, but considering his poor negotiating skills and skewed telling of the story decides to let Zeoll deal with it as ge sees fit. Tossing the liontaur the bag he thinks to himself I have made more gold this month than I did in the last year. Perhaps it's best to let this one slide. We wouldn't want them looking too deeply into our story.
ooc 1: Yes, Bosk will get Maikill's axe.
ooc 2: I feel Zeoll should get an equal share since he has been present since the last big battle (witches) that gave us a fair amount of loot. As for Valla, he has been gone a while, but he only missed a few days before the quest was over. Most of what he missed was transitional, so missing xp for not posting seems more appropiate, that and I would like to encourage players who take a break to come back, so I feel he should get 80% of his share.

The group walks over to Harls' cooper shop in Hook City, near the gate closest to Mudtown. With the writ duly proclaiming your registered status as the "Iron Adventurers," you have no problem with the guard at the gate. Just inside the city, on a street filled with woodworkers, cart-makers, and blacksmiths, you find the place -- based on the big water barrel out front with the word "Harls" painted on it. A dipper hangs from the barrel so passers-by can have a drink.
As is usual, the shop is on the ground level, and the family likely lives around the back and above the workroom. Outside, a fence with wooden slats keeps a small flock of clipped-wing chickens from escaping to the street. A small boy wearing only dirty shorts, maybe six years old, is scattering feed. The other half of the yard is bare dirt for wagons and horses to use in getting to the workroom. Wide doors, now open, let you hear the sound of hammering inside.
When you meet Harl, a strong workman with eyes that squint when he is pondering something, at first he pauses when you tell him you are the Iron Adventurers responding to his notice about his daughter. His eyes squint some. Then he shrugs, shouts for his prentice to mind the shop, and invites you around back to meet his wife. You all sit on benches under a big maple tree growing in the back yard. Harl comes back out with his wife, who he introduces as Sarrie.
"What's all this, then, goodmen?" he asks. Looking a little sideways at Zeoll and Bosk, he adds, "And goodtaurs?"

I know about this one. Jim wanted the villain Mind Flayer to have contingency spell effects, so he gave him ranks in UMD and a contingency wand. Such a wand cannot be constructed using the core rules, so it was a kind of fate item, which DMs are free to add to the game. He said that it could be sold in game to a collector for 5,000 gp. It can't be sold in the Catacombs. It has five charges left.

Very well. So to "get rid" of the wand you'll have to check your informants, if you have any, and start "working" Mudtown for a buyer. Fate items are original items that are not in the DMG nor approved by the Black Genie Center. They stay in our game and are bought and sold in our game. The initiative to deal with the wand will have

As for the wand, the DMG p. 245 states that wands have to be for 4th level spells or lower. So we will change the wand to a scroll with 5 copies of the 6th level Wizard spell Contingency. This also gives you the option to say keep one of them. :)

Beriothian starts to get an uneasy feeling about the situation, Harl's actions don't seem to be those of a man who's daughter has been kidnapped. Could it be that the notice in the WLA was a fake? But what reason would someone have for faking a kidnapping? Or maybe it's just that spending so much time with a severed mind flayer head has started to take it's tole on Beri's nerves.
As they sit on the bench Beri keeps an eye out for signs of an ambush.

Harls looks at you all a bit askance and demands, "How much are you lot charging us?" You explain that you want no payment or reward (your kindly DM assumes), and as Harls comes to understand this, his composure cracks. He can't talk, and tears roll down his cheeks.
His wife puts an arm around his shoulders and tells you, "We've had three adventurer groups come by, and all wanted far more than we could afford. People back in Mudtown think that because we moved out of there and into the city that we must be rich. But we're not. We've worked hard to make a better life for our children. But we don't have thousands of gold pieces."
"I don't know this Holy-day Me person," she tells Ransy, having likely never heard of "Holy Domi" before. "but if you will do as you say you will, then the Grandmothers' blessings, and ours, be on you."
She tells you that her daughter was visiting cousins in Mudtown. They say she left before nightfall. But she never came back. She tells you the name of her sister and where she lives. Her daughter's name is Tallie. She is a young lady of 16, with pale skin and blonde hair. She was wearing a blue dress and grey apron.
"Where are my manners? Let me fetch you some biscuits and lemonade." She will not let you leave until you share some food and drink with herself, Harls, and their young boy (now in a clean shirt).
"I do apologise," Harls says over the light meal. "But it is remarkable to meet such kindness from strangers, especially lordly folk such as yourselves."

That is considerably less than the 22 thousand which you have in your bookkeeping. (before subtracting 600 for the locks) 13,375- 600 = 12,775 / 11 = 1,161.36 I think. It is easy enough to find the house of Sarrie's sister, Jemmie. It is a big house that holds several families. Probably owned by some landlord who charges more than he should, if you know how Mudtown works. A frightened middle-aged woman peeks out at you when you knock on her door.

Zeoll d20+13=14 ; Tuesday September 7th, 2010 1:27:03 PM
Zeoll pays some attention to the lost girl's auntie, inviting her to tell her side of the story. For once, the liontaur is as tongue-tied as he gets. Maybe because the room is so crowded, and he feels like he is practically sitting in the woman's lap.
Diplomacy 14
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Tuesday September 7th, 2010 5:26:09 PM Ransy compliments Herrert and, after introducing himself, asks to examine the half-elf's aura. He smiles a thin smile. "A paladin. I have heard of such as you. You look for mystical signs that a creature is "good" or "evil," and then declare your allegiance based on that. But the truth is that those responsible for creating the pit of human misery called Mudtown are what you would call "good," while many who steal for hunger or who murder for justice that does not otherwise exist in this place you call "evil."
His tone is calm and gentle as he says this, he motions as if to take in the room, the building, and the entire area when he mentions Mudtown.
"But please feel free to look into my heart with your magic. For the truth is that most who do wrong are evil, and most who oppose them are good, so our path, yours and mine, will lie as one more often than not."
OOC: Herrert Half-Elven does not detect as evil. He is sincere, to the extent you can tell.
Bosk adds specific questions to Ransy's, and the unknown half-elf takes the time to explain very carefully.
"I think there is a cult because I seek a young boy who has gone missing, because his family asked me to. I traced him to a warehouse and to a tavern, both the scenes of past violence, after I got there. But three people I found in those areas gave me clues. I think the warehouse you mention is that same one. Both the warehouse and the tavern are abandoned now, and the cult members who remain do not go near, I guess."
"My suspicion is that your group has broken the back of this cult, and driven it further underground, but that some remnant of kidnappers persists, or had stolen this girl before you did your effective work. My fear is that those kidnappers have killed their victims and gone into hiding."
"I am here now, in this house, because I heard a rumor that a girl was taken near here, a part of this family. I think there may be a connection."
Jemmie blanches at his suggestion that Tallie has been killed and her murderers have already fled.
Maikill keeps still for this exchange, but he seems to be listening intently. Zeoll is too, and he tries to reassure the aunt.
Beriothian does a better job of that, both in his manner and in his logic, and the woman relaxes a little. "I surely hope you are right, Mister," she says.
Herrert adds that Jemmie told him the direction the girl went that night, and he was planning to make inquiries in that general area. Would you all like to join him?
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Tuesday September 7th, 2010 9:12:33 PM
Beriothian turns back toward Herrert. I agree that heading out to canvas the area she went missing in would be best course of action if nobody has additional questions to ask.
ooc: Let me know if it gets late enough in the day that I need to head for the WLA to do the training
Ransy, AC 21 Hp 34 /35 Wednesday September 8th, 2010 6:21:53 AM
ooc: let me know about WLA-time too, as Ransy wants to do training as well.
"I think it strange that you know so much about our doings. Who told you that our group has broken the back of this cult? And which tavern are you talking about? When have you been there for the last time? What violence have you witnessed there?"
Ransy wants to join Herrert on Tallie's trail, after he has answered these questions.
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Wednesday September 8th, 2010 6:33:52 AM
Herrert smiles at Ransy's questions. "I found two lesser members of the cult who would gather with their foul priest for services. From them I found out about the warehouse and the tavern. When I visited the tavern, I found out about uproar there, saw a hole in the roof, and found a witness who testified to the presence of two taurs. These are thin threads, but seeing your group, and hearing you mention a warehouse, it seems clear to me."
"What did you do to that priest? He has not been seen lately, and his cult is in disarray, its head removed."
Ransy, AC 23/12/22 Hp 34 /35 d20+10=25 ; Wednesday September 8th, 2010 2:02:51 PM
"We killed the priest, not out of wanton cruelty, but because he was a monster in disguise. In fact he was a mind flayer. Moreover, he was helped by an archer who was under his control. There was nothing else we could do but attack and hope to survive. Kill or be killed, it was as simple as that! But now it might be difficult to find those kidnappers. Frankly, I didn't think they were connected to the cult. But of course, that might have been the case. I wonder, however: if Tallie was kidnapped an entire week ago, what signs may we hope to find if we track her path? Perhaps we shouldn't look passively, but go door to door and question the people who live along the route, whether they have seen something, on the evening Tallie disappeared. Do you agree with that plan, Herrert?"
diplomacy = 25. trying to convince Herrert of this plan.
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Wednesday September 8th, 2010 2:16:24 PM "I think we need look for girl now too. No time waste playing with swords in Hook City at WAL, or whatever you call club you join. We promise parent we try find her."
Maikill is ready to do the search.
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Wednesday September 8th, 2010 5:16:33 PM
Herrert is surprised at that news. "A mind flayer!" But he agrees that investigating actively in the neighborhood is a good idea.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Wednesday September 8th, 2010 7:22:39 PM I agree, we should start looking for the young lady right away. Perhaps we should split into two groups to cover more area?
Should we make gather information checks?
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Wednesday September 8th, 2010 8:44:05 PM
Beri notices that Maikill thinks he is about to head off to the WLA, perhaps he had been thinking of the biscuits he had received when Beri had announced his intent to look for the girl. Still, Maikill is right that Beri has every intention of heading to the WLA should they not find a solid lead. Besides needing to finish training the WLA is a great source for information. And the rout the girl would have taken from here back to Hook City must have taken her in the same direction Beri needs to head to re-enter the city.

Ransy, AC 23/12/22 Hp 34 /35 d20+10=21 ; Thursday September 9th, 2010 3:22:51 AM
Ransy is talking to people who live along the path that Tallie must have followed a week ago. "Please, sir [madam], do you have a moment for a few questions? We're trying to find a girl who disappeared a week ago. It's an innocent girl and we fear she may have been kidnapped. She walked through this street probably, on the evening of last wednesday. Were you at home that night? Did you hear or see anything out of the ordinary? Have you seen two grown-ups pulling forth an unwilling girl of about 16 years old?"
diplomacy = 21; if I need gather information, it is 13.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells d20=15 ; Thursday September 9th, 2010 11:13:27 PM
Bosk tries his best to get information from all of his less than reputable contacts, including the disbanded Iron Fist (local gang we broke up, on good terms with Hemust, Jillian, and 3 halflings), Gordo (the merchant who kidnapped a previous employer of ours), local taverns and the WLA.

He talks to people about the girl, setting at ease any who are put off by the group's queries.
Diplomacy 22.
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Friday September 10th, 2010 5:12:21 PM
The party does its best to investigate, but gains little information at first. Hererrt contributes little to the search as well, although he seems to use some spell rather than any ranks in Gather Info. "Were she nearby and alive, I think I would have sensed her. I fear the worst," he says glumly.
But Bosk has the presence of mind to expand his investigative efforts to include past associates, and there he hits pay dirt -- or maybe a false lead. A former gang member from the Iron Fist tells Bosk that a local thuglord has a new moll who fits the description. She isn't exactly "unwilling" or "innocent," though, the cad snickers rudely as he tells Bosk what little he knows. This leader of this band of thugs is named Gary Glittertooth, from the gold in his teeth. He's known to sell his troops' protection, both as irregular mercenaries and for more unsavory work. Rumor has it he has his hand in worse, too.
Bosk also finds out how to get to the building this Gary calls home these days ... a warehouse that he owns.
Ransy, AC 23/12/22 Hp 34 /35 Saturday September 11th, 2010 6:06:26 AM
How long does all the investigation of Bosk take? Much longer than what Ransy is doing, I guess. So Ransy will in the mean time go to the WLA and train there.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Saturday September 11th, 2010 5:16:10 PM
ooc: If gather information was used then we probably do need to head to the WLA, however since Bosk was heading to specific people he may not have used that skill.
Since several of us have chores we need to do, my suggestion at this point is to post what are chores are for the afternoon (catacombs, WLA, etc.), then just advance to the morning so we don't spend several days with some people doing nothing while others are doing these chores.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Saturday September 11th, 2010 7:07:36 PM
ooc: I believe the WLA is a full day requirement and that everyone used gather information.

ooc: James, if you read back I've been very careful each step to make sure we will still have time for the WLA afterward
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Sunday September 12th, 2010 10:02:35 PM
ooc: I understood Cazyle to mean we will have time to do this before leveling up.
From the Woldipedia under WLA:
As a result any member who spends at least two full days at a large League outpost is entitled to 2 extra skill points to spend on the following skills (these skill may be taken as Class Skills by all classes): climb, handle animal, jump, ride, and swim. These 2 skill points may be taken when the Leaguer joins and each time the Leaguer levels up.
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Monday September 13th, 2010 7:03:34 AM
Yup, what Bosk said. Please stop worrying! :-)
Post coming later today.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Monday September 13th, 2010 8:25:05 AM
ooc: I think that was where the miss-communication was. I wasn't asking about going to the WLA before leveling, I was asking about having time to do it today. Otherwise I wouldn't have been checking so often.
Zeoll Monday September 13th, 2010 4:22:25 PM
While Bosk is gathering his info and Ransy is training at the WLA, Zeoll goes home to his very unfinished garden and meditates on gaining a new Animal Companion. This time he calls for an eagle.
Maybe it will help for a search from the air, he tells anyone there.
OOC: What about those scrolls? I say sell them, or at least give one each to the five of us.
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Monday September 13th, 2010 4:28:33 PM
Since the immediate investigation of the neighborhood does not come up with any positive results, the group had dispersed. Ransy went to the WLA outpost in the city proper to train. Bosk does his further investigating, as reported last DM post. Zeoll goes home to call for an eagle. Any special actions desired from the others of the party? Chores? Catacombs? Now is your chance to use a solid block of time productively. [Note, that that's one of two required WLA days. Is that your first day of two or your second?]
Does anyone care to ask Hererrt to stay in touch?
Let us end the day's activities there. In any event, it is too dangerous to search out the thuglord Gary Glittertooth late at night, were that your intention -- and if the girl is his new "moll," then she is in no immediate danger, one might reasonably assume.
So we come to a new day. Please select new spells, and give an idea of your first priorities for what to do next. Note that Zeoll will not be available until the afternoon, given that his call takes 24 hours.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Monday September 13th, 2010 8:59:02 PM Well Hererrt, I am going to head to the WLA and see if their intelligence network has any useful information. It would probably be wisest to wait until the sun comes up tomorrow before looking for such a dangerous person. Would you like to come with us in the morning to investigate?
Beriothian will spend the day at the WLA, this is his second day there.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Monday September 13th, 2010 10:42:46 PM
Bosk would like to go to the WLA if he has any time left.
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Tuesday September 14th, 2010 11:27:35 AM
Maikill goes back to the shop to rest and wait out the day, seems like everyone has joined some sort of club.
Ransy, AC 23/12/22 Hp 35 /35 Tuesday September 14th, 2010 3:01:42 PM
OOC: this was my first day of training climbing. I have a question: I joined as 2nd level, and then trained 2 days to get the prof. with bastard sword. But I didn't have time then to train for sk. points. Now I am 3d level. Can I still train for the 2nd level sk. points?
In the evening Ransy is prepared to heal whoever needs it. The next day he feels rested and proposes to go looking for the thuglord Gary Glittertooth. "Do you know which warehouse he's staying, Bosk? Or do we visit every warehouse in Mudtown? Or we could ask for someone with gold in his teeth."
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Tuesday September 14th, 2010 7:59:54 PM
ooc: I thought you were training your skill points last level, not bastard sword training. It looks like the Wiki says that you need to train skill points each level, but it says nothing about training for the feats, it says that those are awarded. So it looks like you did all the required training for that level.
(if my interpretation is wrong let me know, and I will remove the bastard sword feat from my character sheet until I have time to train it).
Zeoll Tuesday September 14th, 2010 8:07:36 PM
Zeoll invites Maikill to pass the time with him in his "garden" while he meditates on his new companion. "It is quiet company," he says, "but company nonetheless."
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle d8=2 ; Tuesday September 14th, 2010 8:13:35 PM
[OOC: WLA details: You need two days of training before you go up a level to gain the two skill ranks coming to ya when you level. The feats come from other incidental (assumed) training and paying your dues.]
Ransy and Beriothian train at the WLA, and Maikill and Zeoll spend time at the shop.
Bosk stays out into the evening, then returns with great info, but no time to visit the WLA. He knows the location of the warehouse in question.
Hererrt thanks Beriothian for the invitation, but cannot join you until midday.
The next day, Zeoll calls an eagle with 3 hp. Hererrt joins you at midday. Bosk knows the way to the warehouse. Is that your destination? What is your plan, if so?
Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17 Tuesday September 14th, 2010 10:45:38 PM
"How you know how grow things?" Maikill asks Zeoll
"Mostly I eat meat, not good grow things eat. Meat easy, just need kill something."
then later, Maikill is amazed as an eagle comes and lands by Zeoll.
"How you do that, why eagle come to you? Maybe I try, maybe I bring wolf."
Zeoll Wednesday September 15th, 2010 7:37:18 AM
Zeoll laughs and explains all that he can to Maikill, how he is a bard and a druid. He tells Maikill that plants are easy too. Maybe together they can do some gardening.
Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells Wednesday September 15th, 2010 10:26:37 AM
When the others return to the shop Bosk relays what he learned about Garry Glittertooth. This guy's worse than Zamnoodle. It seems that he has branched out from selling protection from themselves to the more unsavory work that can be bought in mudtown. He is aparrently staying at the warehouse he owns.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17 Wednesday September 15th, 2010 8:16:13 PM
Beriothian returns after a day of training at the WLA. He walks a little slower than normal, his legs still stiff from training.
Bosk, is this warehouse anywhere near the warehouse we rescued Cesar and Ransy from?
ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle Thursday September 16th, 2010 7:48:25 AM
Real life got real busy. Very sorry. DM Post later today.

"Do we have a plan? Suppose we just walk in and ask where Tallie is? Very direct approach, I'm in favor of that. We'll look at their reaction when we mention Tallie. That should give us a clue whether she's indeed there. We'll ask to see her, because her parents miss her. If they refuse, we'll ask what right they think they have to keep her there. If she comes herself, we ask her to move outside with us and try to convince her to come home. If they start a fight, we fight back: then it's probably the gang who's kidnapping people. We should all have our weapons ready. Perhaps one should be at the back, to prevent people from fleeing."
