Maikill and Zeoll talk about gardening and falconry.

Bosk weighs in on the nature of the new villain you are facing. He tells Beriohtian that Glittertooth's warehouse is not particularly near the one in which other victims were found, but then again, it is not very far. Maybe a half a mile.

Ransy asks how the group should tackle the situation, and suggests a direct approach.

It is early afternoon, and Hererrt arrives. Assuming you fill him in on the lead, he is eager to explore it and full of praise for Bosk. "Excellent sleuthing, friend!"

Next step?

Beriothian lets Bosk fill in Hererrt on his findings (after all, Bosk did the leg work). He checks to make sure he is prepared for the days events, then suggests they make their way toward the warehouse.

ooc:I say go ahead and sell them

ooc: no objection to selling them.

If there's no objection to my plan, let's go and put it in action. Maikill, will you stand guard at the back of the building and catch anyone trying to flee?

Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17

Ok, but I probably miss fight. I do what you want though.

Maikill will guard the back of the building

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17
Friday September 17th, 2010 6:31:05 PM

Maikill, I think you should stay with the group instead of heading to the back of the building. We are more likely to need your axe when we enter. Besides, it sounds like this guy is dangerous enough that if he does try to flee you won't be able to stop him on your own.

ooc: Also, not to get too much into metagaming, but if there is a fight it could leave Maykill doing absolutely nothing for a week or two. It might make more sense to have Zeoll's 3hp track anyone fleeing from the sky (I don't know anything about animal companions though).

Maikill HP 39/39, AC 17

With a confused look on his face, Maikill says:

Okay, I stay with you. Fight bad man if he want fight. I think I say before though, leader good idea. Maikill get confused easy, leader maybe help me know what do.

Maikill will stay with the group as they confront the warehouse owner.

Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 31 of 31 Spells
Sunday September 19th, 2010 2:51:29 PM

Beri's right, we should all stay together. I don't think this guy will run, if he does he is a coward and no gang in mud town is going to respect someone who runs from a fight. It would just encourage other gangs to attack hims.

ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle
Monday September 20th, 2010 8:06:52 AM

The discussion turns to tactics, and as you walk toward the neighborhood of the warehouse, you decide on a simple approach.

The neighborhood is run down even for Mudtown. The "street" is just mud. The buildings run down. The people you see are furtive, and keep their eyes down as they hurry by.

At first, Maikill is to guard the back, but then the consensus is that he should come with the main group.

Herrert, however, says that his stealth skills put him at a disadvantage at times like this, and he will sneak around and see if there even is a rear door.

Per suggestion, Zeoll uses a speak with animals spell and sets his new eagle to circling the warehouse.

It is a big building, one story, maybe 60 feet by 80 feet. There is a loading dock for wagons on one side, and a main door right on the street. The mail door has a small sliding panel in it, which can be opened for discussion without opening the door.

Ransy, AC 23/12/22 Hp 35 /35
Monday September 20th, 2010 5:30:44 PM

Ransy walks up to the main door, knocks on it, waits for the small sliding panel to open, and asks:
"Hi, we're here to see Tallie. Can we talk to her please?"

Beriothian hopes that the kidnappers don't panic and kill Tallie at hearing Ransy blurt out there purpose at the warehouse. His scans the street for signs of an attack and listens to hear what may be going on behind the door.

At Gary's Warehouse

Hererrt chose not to accompany you. He said he would go look for and cover other exits. Zeoll's eagle is circling overhead.

At the door, Ransy, with Beriothian and Zeoll right behind, knock and wait for a response. The panel slides away, and a human says, "Yeah?" Ransy asks for Tallie, and Zeoll backs him up. Maikill stands behind, and Bosk, to the side.

Behind the man, it looks like there is a medium-size room beyond him.

"Wait a minute," says the man, who slides the panel shut.

And about a minute later, there is a click, and the door swings open. Inside, you see a room 15 feet wide and 25 feet long. At the far end is a closed curtain. In front of the curtain (20 feet from Ransy) is a man sitting on a chair. His clothes are flashy and expensive. You see his glittering teeth as he smiles and says, "Come on in! Let's talk!"

Ransy, AC 23/12/22 Hp 35 /35  d20+10=19 ;
Tuesday September 21st, 2010 3:34:27 PM

Does Ransy recognize the voice of the man, perhaps a memory which was repressed earlier when he was locked in a warehouse?

Ransy steps inside, but stops at 15 feet from the man. He is rich, but that doesn't count in his favor, in Ransy's view. He suspects this wealth wasn't earned lawfully.
Ransy says:
"Well thank you sir! As I said, we're looking for a girl named Tallie. We heard that she might be working here. But frankly, I wouldn't know what kind of work a young woman might be doing here. Perhaps you, sir, can enlighten me? But anyway, I would like to speak to her. It's an urgent matter, urgent to some people who miss her very much. I mean, how would you like it if someone close to you disappeared suddenly, without leaving a word, a note, a sign, or anything at all? Wouldn't that cause some alarm to your otherwise comfortable character?
Now I'm not accusing anybody. I wouldn't dream of suspecting people without good reason. There might be a perfectly good reason for her sudden disappearance. Nevertheless, I would like to find out what happened.
"
Diplomacy = 19.

While the others have their say, Ransy tries to detect evil through the curtain behind the man.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:17/17  d20+9=19 ; d20+5=23 ;
Tuesday September 21st, 2010 9:40:06 PM

Beriothian cautiously enters the room, scanning along the walls and curtain for any signs they are walking into a trap. As he listens for the second time as every detail of their goal is relayed to what is likely Tallie's kidnapper, along with a few thinly veiled accusations, Beri makes a mental note to explain to him the finer points of not running head first into danger. After Ransy has his say and starts casting spells Beri begins to speak to their lavishly dressed host.

Please excuse the Paladin, he is young and has not yet learned to show the proper respect to men of high standing, such as yourself. We are indeed looking for a young lady who we have heard may be under your care at the moment. If you can spare a few minutes we would like to talk to you about escorting her back to her parents.

"This nice, where you buy good cloth. Maybe I need some for my room, I just build own room. This look nice."

He looks around, hoping to spot any signs of an enemy on the other side of the curtain. If nothing else, he plans on being close at hand if combat begins.

Iron Adventurers:

Ransy steps in, asks the man about Tallie, and then detects evil. There is evil, yes.

Beri follows, looking around. He sees that there are several wood panels in the wall, about three feet off the floor, about 1 ft wide by 3 ft high. Then Beriothian picks up the thread of the conversation when Ransy pauses to sense evil.

Maikill walks right on up past the first two and starts fingering the curtain.

Maikill only, please Highlight to display spoiler: {Make a Will save vs DC11. If you make the save, then highlight the next spoiler. If you fail the save, then (A) You find the material entirely ordinary, and (B) you do not realize that you had to make a save. Don't mention that to anyone.}

Maikill only, please Highlight to display spoiler: {You see right through the curtain! It is some kind of magic trick! There is a set of metal bars where the "curtain" was, and there are two men behind the bars, five feet from you! One has a bow. The other looks just like the guy on the chair ... wait! The guy on the chair is also a trick! You can draw a weapon and attack through the bars for your next action -- with no penalty if you have a stabbing weapon, but if you attack with a blunt or slashing weapon then they have some cover vs your attacks.}

Bosk and Zeoll crowd in, making the room very crowded. Bosk readies an action to draw a weapon.

OOC: I had to take some liberties to get you all to fit. If you have a problem with my placement of your PC, then go ahead and tell me so.

Enemies:

At first the man sitting on the chair grins as Ransy and Beri stop 15 feet from him and have their say. "Well, that's all you want, eh? Maybe we can work out a deal ..."

But them Maikill steps right up and starts fingering the curtain! And the taurs crowd in, pushing everyone practically into the man's lap! The man seems nonplussed! Then he says, "Attack!"

Four of the panels, two on each side, open briefly -- long enough for an arrow to fly out -- and then close.

That's four flatfooted arrow attacks on Zeoll, Bosk, Ransy, and Beri. Those attacks hit ...

Zeoll - AC 12 for 8
Bosk - AC 7 for nothing
Ransy - AC 11 for 9
Beri - AC 14 for 7

An arrow flies out through the curtain at Maikill, hitting AC 24 for 21 if flat-footed, 8 if not. Maikill, if you were given permission to read the second spoiler, then you are not flat-footed.

The man on the chair pulls out a wand and says a magic word. It seems to give him an aura -- maybe some defensive spell.

That's the end of the surprise round. You guys can act next, for the top of Round One.

The arrow aimed at Ransy deflects on his full plate armor. "That's nasty, shooting and closing; meet my wrath!"

Ransy attacks the man with the golden teeth, who seemed to listen to him until Maikill pushed past him.
He tries to hit him with a one-handed swing of his bastard sword. He uses power attack for 2 (-2 to hit, +2 to damage):

Bosk instantly belives Maikill, having already suspected there must be others somewhere out of view. Having learned his lesson protecting Penn in the bar, Bosk leaves the target in the chair alone and focus his attention on the target that (I assume) fired at him (Target 4 in H/11). Bosk waits patiently until the pannel opens again and then attacks with both his horn and his morning star. After attacking Bosk leaves his morningstar in the opening and holds onto it so that the enemy may not shut the panel again.

Bosk decides it best to fight defensively. Pulling out his shield, he uses it to block any arrows that may come out the nearest pannel. He then looks at the pannel and if it is wood and looks breakable he will attack it and try to break it. If not he will try to attack through the opening when it's opened with his sword, not withdrawing it from the pannel when finished.

Beriothian realizes that his skills as a rogue leave him almost as helpless as Tallie in the current situation, but a good rogue always has a trick or two up his sleeve. While the panel is closed Beri withdraws his pirate feather and prepares to slide it through the bars to tickle his attacker into submission when they slide open again.

Iron Adventurers

Ransy swings at the man in the chair, but misses. Ransy, Please Highlight to display spoiler: {Make a Will save vs DC11. If you fail, then please do not say anything -- you do not even realize you had to make a save. If you succeed, please highlight the next spoiler.}

Ransy, Please Highlight to display spoiler: {If you make the save, you realize that the man and the curtain are illusions. You can see right through them. You can attack through the bars if you can reach them -- with no penalty if you have a stabbing weapon, but if you attack with a blunt or slashing weapon then they have some cover vs your attacks.}

Maikill attacks right through the curtain, somehow knowing where to strike. He swings and makes contact, you can tell by the meaty thud of his ax. He hits for 10 damage.

Zeoll sings a ditty to rally the troops. The tune does that anyway, if not the words.

Beriothian waits until the panel opens, then uses magic to make his victim laugh. The Will save DC is 13, and the save rolled at +0 is a 17, so the magic fails, sorry.

Bosk smacks the panel before hi with his mace, knocking it in. Now there is just a hole, 1 ft by 3 ft high, between him and a villain with a short bow.

Enemies

Four archers shoot again, this time against targets who are more ready. They hit:

Zeoll - AC 12 misses
Bosk - AC 14 misses
Ransy - AC 22 just misses!
Beri - AC 8 misses

And a hidden archer fires at Bosk: He hits AC17 for 21 damage, much of that due to its being a sneak attack.

The man on the chair rises and swings a dagger at Ransy, missing.

Status: There are four archers behind arrow slits. Three of the four arrow slits are covered by sliding panels. There is the man in the room with you. And there is at least one archer behind the curtain, unseen, shooting through the curtain to do large amounts of sneak attack damage. I'll post a new map this weekend.

Beriothian, unable to flank, unable to sneak attack, and unable to use one and, considers briefly making a run for the door. But that wouldn't be his style. Should it looks simple (i.e. simple enough it is a 1 round action... for a sliding panel I assume this is the case), Beri will attempt to disable the sliding panel so it can not open (or so that it falls of if it somehow looks easier to do) . If the sliding panel is not simpt, the rogue readies his rapier and prepares to stab the next time the panel opens.

The Iron Adventurers

Ransy tries to lift the gate, but fails. He does note, however, that the gate is on wheels, and seems designed to roll back and forth, east to west sideways like. He senses, as he strains at it, that there is some hook or such keeping it in place ... but maybe that would yield to a feat of strength.

Maikill lashes out at the "mage," who he sees is clearly Glittertooth, but misses.

Beriothian makes a heroic effort and shoves a prybar from his toolkit quickly into the panel, disabling it so it stays closed.

Bosk attempts to fight through the curtain, and maybe realizes something is funny ... you can try a Will save vs DC11, but it is a moot point ...

Zeoll throws a flask and only succeeds in singing his tail.

Glittertooth & Co.

Gary, seeing that his enemies are seeing through the illusion, drops it. Now everyone can see that there is a grillwork, not a curtain, closing off the entire length of the far wall. Behind the grill are two humans. One is Gary Glittertooth, not an illusion of him. The other is likely his Leftenant, that is, his second in command.

Gary steps back five feet, so that his back is against some crates, and he is out of reach. He pulls out a bow and arrow and shoots at Ransy. His attack hits AC18 for 3 damage (but that's a miss, I think.)

His Leftenant does the same, stepping back and shooting. A natural 20! But does not confirm. 3 damage.

The four archers try to shoot, but one cannot open his panel!

Archer 1: AC14 (shooting at Zeoll) - 9, a miss

Ransy, AC 23/12/22 Hp 32 /35  d20+3=4 ;
Tuesday September 28th, 2010 9:01:58 AM

Ransy is hit by a well-aimed arrow and surpresses a cry of pain: hmmmpff; help me, Maikill, we should push this gate aside.
If Maikill agrees to push, Ransy will try to pull the gate away in concert with Maikill or with Bosk. Otherwise, he'll pull alone.

As Ransy and Maikill move up to test the gate Bosk realizes that he is now in the direct line sight of half their attackers and presenting a nice large target. Instinctively he takes a step to his right and calls back to Beri. Watch yourself. That cowardly thug caught me off guard and I'm bleeding like a stuck pig over here... need a break from acting meat shield.

Bosk's first instinct is to heal himself, but he decides it would be best to get a few of their attackers out of the way first. Once again the cleric decides to take a defensive approach. Glad for once that the panels are so small, he and places his shield against the opening (#2) to his right making sure his arm is located away from the opening. He then attacks the other archer (#3) placing all of his force behind the bastard sword. If the archer is still alive he then follows up with a threatening swish from his horns, if not he uses his horns to attack panel #2.

The Iron Adventurers

Ransy and Maikill try hard to pull the gate open, but they have no luck. It is hooked shut on a peg, and will require a DC15 break (strength) check to force open. You can aid another, but, alas, Ransy's 4 and Maikill's 13 just do not cut it. You can try again, if you feel lucky. Or heroic. I'll even let the highest of the two rolls be the attempt, and the next highest will be the aid another.

But maybe it will be a moot question! Beriothian wriggles up to the front and tries to poke with his "tinkering" tools at the peg holding the gate shut. He has good luck with it, and he is sure that by the end of next round, he will have it open. [OOC: It will take your complete action next round to finish the job.]

[OOC to Bosk: Sorry, you cannot completely block the opening with a normal shield -- although it might seem reasonable, there is no mechanic in the game to let you do it. If you were using a tower shield, you could do it, but it would take a standard action. Thus, your kindly substitute DM is adjudicating your porders as best he can.]

Bosk, fighting defensively, makes a full attack on archer number 2, whose panel is destroyed. That archer still has the benefit of cover, but that is of little help against the minotaur, who hits for 16 damage and downs the rogue.

Finally, Zeoll casts a spell at the Leftenant. The arrow-shooting rogue rolls an 8 on the save, and succumbs, losing his action. He falls prone.

Glittertooth & Co.

Gary, seeing the danger if that gate opens, shoots at Beriothian, hoping to down him before he can complete his disabling work. His attack hits AC26, a hit, for 3 hp damage. He shouts at the archers to shoot at "the thief at the gate!"

His Leftenant, of course, can make no action.

Archer 4 has moved around, seeing that his panel was stuck shut, and he also shoots at poor Beri. His roll hits AC22, a hit, for 5 more damage.

Archers 1 and 3, terrified of the minotaur who just killed their pal, both shoot at Bosk. They hit AC 17 and 22. The 17 is a miss. The shot vs AC22 ... well, does that hit given that Bosk is fighting defensively? If so, the damage is 5 more to Bosk. And note that archers 1 and 3 are still using their sliding panels to attain total cover when it is not their own turn.

Enemy Status:

Glittertooth: AC20 HP -10
Leftenant: AC16, prone, not taking any action
Archer 1: AC14 (shooting at Bosk)
Archer 2: down
Archer 3: AC14 (shooting at Bosk)

"I am not very good at pulling this gate away, Beri, I am counting on you!"
It will be a normal attack:

Bosk (James) AC: 18/11/17 HP 10 of 31 Spells
Wednesday September 29th, 2010 8:42:23 PM

ooc: if archer #1 is shooting through a panel infront of him, wouldn't zeoll be blocking his line of sight of Bosk? Also, if archer #4 moved up to the gate wouldn't this trigger an AoO from Bosk (10 ft reach), Beri, and Ransy?

Cayzle Comments: Well, Bosk had Zeoll's soft cover against Archer 1, who missed anyway. And there are no AoOs against anyone who has cover. That's how come the archers have not been provoking any when they shoot from 5 feet away. The gate gives Archer 4 enough cover that he is immune to AoOs.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:18/15/13 HP:2/17  d20+11=28 ; d8=5 ;
Wednesday September 29th, 2010 8:54:30 PM

Beriothian stands by the gate working the release mechanism. As he works an arrow whizzes into his side, staining his tunic a dark crimson and splattering on Ransy's gleaming armor. Beri watches as the paladin gathers himself, expecting to watch him smite the attacker in front of the two of them, or at the very least tend to the injured rogues wounds. However Beri's hear drops as he watches the servant of Domi turn his back to him and start to wander away towards one of the walls.
First he runs head first into an obvious trap.... not that I didn't follow him... now his is leaving me to die while I try to open the gate HE was struggling with. If I get through this I am officially siding with Maikill to nominate Bosk the leader of our group.
Bleeding almost to the point of passing out Beri leaves the gate to the warriors and retreats back to the panel he disabled earlier, drawing his wand as he backs up (free action).
Hey meat shield, I'm useless over here. I'll watch your back if you cover me.
Assuming the horned cleric steps in front of Beri and covers him from the onslaught of arrows Beri will cast CLW on him... otherwise he will cast it on himself.

ooc: I believe that since the crossbow is not loaded no AOO can be made against me, if I am incorrect let me know and I will tumble away instead of healing.

A smile comes over him as he steps forward to attack Glittertooth.

The Iron Adventurers

Ransy, discouraged by bad luck, backs off, readies an attack against Archer 3, and misses.

Beriothian, discouraged by the way his life's blood is pouring out of multiple holes in his body, backs off, curing himself for 6 hp (using a lotto winning? Make sure you mark it gone, please.) He's up to a less life-threatening 8 hp.

Maikill, not discouraged at all, tries to pull the gate open, which is easier now that Ransy is not pulling in the opposite direction. The peg holding it cracks, the gate flies open, and Maikill moves right up close to Gary Glittertooth.

Bosk wishes he could attack that archer, but the gate gives enough cover to prevent that. He drops his sword (a free action), draws his spiked chain (a move action), and swings at Gary, connecting for 12 damage. Since you do not have the quickdraw feat, that's it for the round.

Finally, Zeoll casts a cure light wounds on Bosk, healing 8 hp.

Glittertooth & Co.

The Leftenant is still laughing, lending a somewhat surreal air to the battle.

Archers 3 and 1, not exactly aware that the tide of the battle has turned, open their panels and shoot, one at Bosk, one at Zeoll. Both miss, with a 9 and a 12.

Archer 4 is more informed, and he uses the withdraw action to turn and run.

Gary, too, sees the state of things, and has no desire to fight Bosk and Maikill, much less the rest of you. He too uses the withdraw action ... triggering Hererrt's readied action! A voice says, "Going somewhere, villain?" and the invisible Hererrt, standing behind Gary, makes a sneak attack that hits Gary's dex-less AC for 13 more hit points of nonlethal damage. That's enough to knock Gary unconscious.

Hererrt calls out, "I dispatched the fellow on the roof. Gary Glittertooth here is a prisoner. If the rest of you kidnappers throw down your weapons, you can run away!"

In a somewhat softer voice, he calls out to the Iron Adventurers, "Good work, my friends! Now please go stand close to laughing boy here so that when he comes out of it, he'll know not to try anything."

He says: I don't think it wise to kill this man. He can tell us much about kidnappers in this city. Even if he doesn't want to talk today, we should keep him as captive. He may be convinced to talk later on.

ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle

Gary Glittertooth sees the logic in laying it out straight. The logic of Maikill's sharp ax-blade and sharper threats, that is. "Look, the girl is fine," Gary says. "She's locked in a back room. No, there are no more traps."

"Look, I run a legitimate protection racket for my neighborhood. I offer the residents and the businesses protection, and everyone else has to look out. Well, this girl was not where she was supposed to be, so we snagged her. Yeah, we heard there was some goons paying top gold for trespassers." He tells Bosk that his only interest was in the payment.

"But when we went to the location in question, to deliver the girl and collect the bounty, no one showed up," Gary says. "Meanwhile, the girl has taken a shine to me, so I keep her for a moll. No harm, no foul, see?"

He grins to show his good intentions.

A quick search finds the girl. She is clearly very happy to be rescued, smiling at Beriothian after he lets her out. "I'm okay," she says. "I just want to go home." She has wrapped a blanket around herself, and uses both hands to keep herself covered.

Gary tells Ransy that he doesn't know anything about a cult, on the record. "But just among us," he says, "I did hear rumors that someone was looking to put some blood on an altar. I didn't know that was these goons, I swear. Plus the goons weren't even there when I got there," he adds.

Hererrt suggests that a just punishment for these two would be to strip them of their ill-gotten booty and warn them that if they every trade in innocent people again, they'll lose their lives, instead of just their stuff.

Now, it appears that you've got interesting sources of information. And we would certainly be interested in more details about this whole business. Bosk, I think we should add some incentive to ensure Glittertooth's cooperation, don't you think? Beriothian ponders for a moment whether they should include Gary's teeth as part of their spoils, but decides not to speak up fearing someone may actually start yanking them out.

Beriothian helps Tallie, a girl in her late teens, he judges. Gary is in his late 20s.

Bosk stoops to gather up Gary's weapons and possessions. He offers a deal -- no more kidnapping, loses his gear, tells the party news he hears.

Ransy asks for more details, and amends the deal to let Gary earn back some stuff. Gary agrees, and says he has one last piece of info to offer. He got a note dropped off a couple days ago under his front door asking for more living bodies after a certain date, with a location -- the intersection of two streets in Mudtown. The note said not to show up until double new moon. [OOC: This is a lead for the next adventure, to be conducted by incoming DM Buzz. Don't try to follow it until he takes over the game ... doing so will get you nothing, seeing as I have nothing to give.]

Maikill lowers his weapon and asks someone else to ask Tallie how she is doing. But she has now approached with Beri, and she answers for herself. "I -- I'm fine. I just want to go home, please. I don't want anything from this filthy place."

Zeoll shakes his head and bemoans having to deal with this unsavory character.

Hererrt comments, "Justice is not always clean, nor is it exactly fair, but I believe that we do the best we can. If that means sometimes justice is a little rough around the edges, so be it. We live in an imperfect world. Maybe we can talk about that some more, if any of you are interested in philosophy. [OOC: That's a roleplay hook for you Avenger-wanna-be's, by the way!]

You gain from Gary and his Leftenant:

Magic studded leather armor x2, magic short bows x2, 15 magic arrows total, a magic amulet, and 2,500 gp in coins and gems. All human size.

[OOC: Recent and New Experience and Awards: We got a lump of xp, generally about 1,000 xp each, on June 16. We got a small award of a couple hundred points or so on July 16. I am now bringing us up to date with xp for all play since mid-July, especially this fight, with an award of 1,250 xp each. I am giving out no hero points or cleverness awards because, in my personal opinion, you kind of just stumbled into the encounter and are lucky that no one died. I am giving Maikill a roleplay award of an extra 150 xp because of the way he went up and fingered the curtain, which was not only in character and funny, but also surprised the villains and proved crucial to your surviving the encounter, LOL!]

Later: The DM edited the parts in bold above to fix a couple errors. Thanks for your patience.

The young cleric is caught off guard by Hererrt's words and takes him up on his offer as the group leaves the warehouse. Who exactly are you? Your philosophy is unlike any I have ever heard, but there is much wisdom in your words. Morality is not black and white, but is rather consists of shades of gray that those who do wrong use to take advantage of the innocent. Although I have never heard it expressed in quite those terms, I do not find them contrary to the teachings of Gargul.

ooc: One of the reasons I am curious about the boxes is because I was considering starting them on fire during our battle, but I didn't want to risk finding out later that the kidnappers kept their victims in those boxes... also, we've burned down enough buildings for one week.

OOC: Sorry for not posting in time.

Ransy asks Gary: "Do you know who the rightful owners of these magic armors and shortbows are? Or do you know whose money was used to buy them? I think we should try to make amends to them.

Ransy starts knocking on the boxes, and calling for people who have been kidnapped. He remembers only too well how he was enclosed in a little 'box' himself, only a few days ago.
Search: 12, for kidnapped people in this warehouse.

ACDM and Substitute DM Cayzle

Bosk asks Hererrt who he is, and gets back this answer: "I'm someone who makes it his job to help those who have been wronged. I honor as a priest the Lady of Vengeance, who comforts those who cry out for justice, and she gives it to them, though her justice is sometimes rough. She has much to offer, and I hope we can continue our conversation, after we deal with this mess."

Beriothian looks in the boxes, aided by Zeoll. About half are filled with trade goods, mostly low value rough cloth and clay plates and bowls. There are a couple boxes of brass and pewter merchandise, candlesticks, teapots, eating utensils, etc. It is all homely goods.

Gary explains that his family operates a general store, and Gary uses one of the family's warehouses for his base of operations.

Ransy asks about Gary's gear, and who they belong to. Gary is a little indignant. "Hey! I'm a businessman, and those are my things! I worked hard to earn the gold to buy them, and I bought them myself!"

He mutters, "If anyone is a thief around here ..."

Maikill HP 31/39, AC 17
Friday October 8th, 2010 10:25:48 AM

Maikill helps look around, but it is plain that nothing is left to do. He helps gather up the spoils and turns to Ransy as he speaks of returning them to someone unknown.

"Look, you keep looking to give away stuff that not yours. We won this in battle. I should have killed them, but instead I let them live and they give us weapons. If they keep weapons, they attack us again maybe. Bosk good at dividing stuff, selling stuff. When he give you your share, you can go find someone to give it to. Maybe I spend my share on ale, who know what else. I decide. Also, I go to front to help in case of fight like happened. I not start fight, your words were part of trap they had. Keep us talking to fake man."

Finishing his conversation with Hererrt, Bosk agrees to speak with him later. He then turns and smiles at Ransy as he and Maikill share thier disagreement. He has a point. I think it would be almost impossible to find the owners of the lost treasure. Many of them would have been traveling merchants or could be dead. The average Mud Town citizen doesn't have much money, and those that do know to keep it hidden. Perhaps you could give some to Domi and pray he lets it find it to those who need it.

Feeling the event wrapping up Bosk takes the time to heal himself and Beri, and then goes to check on the archer he took town.

Bosk turns all his lvl 1 spells into CLW and heals himself for 4,7=11
Beri for 4hp

ooc: Did the archer Bosk "killed" die, or is he unconcious? If he is unconcious and dieing Bosk will convert mending into CmW to stabilize him.

We should get Tallie home as soon as possible. Tallie, you probably have the strongest thoughts on the topic of what to do with Gary, are you ok with what the others have decided?

Sunday October 10th, 2010 4:57:42 PM

Ransy is used to being scolded for 'giving things away' by Maikill,
but he's not used to being called a 'thief' by Gary.
He says: Yes, finish your sentence, you kidnapper. Whom are you calling a thief now? Working hard to extort money from innocent people does not count as honest work! Are you so depraved that you even don't know that anymore? Eh?
And yes, of course, I can give money to Domi. But that doesn't make it right, does it? I just can't stand the thought of innocent people living in horrible poverty because of this man, and I to be the one to profit from it. That's not how it should be. So yes, I'll use my share either to help the poor or to get to the bottom of this kidnapping cult.
However, if you feel okay with taking it your share for yourselves, go ahead. Just don't expect me to agree.

OOC: Ransy wanted to do a second day of training before he reached 4th level, but with the 1250 xp, he's now 4th. Can he still do the training?
Ransy has laid his hands on Beri for 3 hp healing (earlier post).

Ransy suggests that he still has some training to do at the WLA and asks if anybody else is willing to join him. He spends the rest of the day in a foul temper at the WLA training climbing.

As Ransy and the others leave the warehouse of Gary,
he says to Bosk and Beri: my apologies to you both, I realize I put your lives in danger in there. As you can see, I have very good protection from my armor and from magic. I put my trust in those, thinking I would be able to get out again if there's too much opposition. But I forgot that others are not as well protected as I am. Sorry about that, I'll try to be more cautious next time.

Maikill gathers up the loot and asserts himself.

Bosk is diplomatic, casts a couple cures, and finds that the one archer is quite dead.

Beriothian talks to Tallie, who gathers herself up, does not look at Gary, and says all she wants to do is go home and never come to Mudtown again.

Ransy takes strong issue with the implication that he is a thief. Gary answers, "Sure, sure, you're a hero, right, big hero. Look, we have a deal, and I'll keep my end of the bargain. OK?"

Later, Ransy takes a more conciliatory tone with his friends.

You leave the warehouse and escort Tallie, home. Her parents are so grateful! They spontaneously decide to throw a welcome home party, and they invite you to come to it in a three days, anytime from late afternoon onwards. They really are insistant that you promise to attend, as guests of honor. Tallie's mother makes a point of telling Maikill that she will make a double batch of her cookies.

You spend the next three days training at the WLA (for those who need it) and training for levels, etc. If you have not leveled or do not need training, you can use a single post to do non-combat stuff. After that, we'll have the party, if you choose to attend.

Bosk and Zeoll, as you are taking the time to spend with Hererrt, Please Highlight to display spoiler: {You two spend time with Herrert. They find that he is a cleric as well as an Avenger, although he makes it very clear that there should be an aura of mystery around that title, and it should not be used openly. He introduces Zeoll to a Stinger, who will be happy to offer training. Bosk, you may role-play and roll your two tests, and you may roll your d20 rolls to do so. I am disinclined to allow you the use of that goblin seal, but seeing as I am just temporary, if you can get incoming DM Buzz to sign off on it, that's okay with me.}

Bosk, Beriothian, and Ransy spend time at the Hook City WLA outpost. Several other members ask you why you still hang around in Mudtown, given that you are true heroes and adventurers now. Several concede that there is good to be done there, after a fashion, but why make a home in such filth and squalor? Your WLA officers are less critical, but if asked, will mention that it seems beneath you. They might be a little worried about the WLA reputation you are expected to maintain. A few WLA members seem to understand, though, and give you props. One, an eccentric who wears a flower mask, says he admires you and your devotion to mingling with the people you care for.

Ransy finds that this fellow, who simply calls himself "Server," is part of an organization that regularly helps out those in Mudtown who are in need. Ransy feels that this group would be a most appropriate recipient of his charitable giving.

Zeoll and Beri help out in the shop. This gives Sanji a chance to take a much-deserved break. Zeoll also works on his garden.

On the third day, it is time for the party in Maple Lane, at the house of Harls the Cooper. Ransy is going. Anyone else? Any special preparation?

He'll ask Server to take him to the organization and then hand over 200 gp in the presence of a few other people who work there. While bathing and preparing for the day Bosk ponders all that Hererrt had said to him and prays to Jancassis to aid him in avenging his fathers death and to allow him to be her tool in aiding others. As he prays he hears a woman's voice, So, you think you are ready to serve me. Very well, we will see if you have what it takes to serve me.

Instantly the cleric is transported to another realm where he is repeatedly bitten by all manner of spiders, scorpions, and snakes -- This pain is a lesson in suffering, to feel it, experience it, and know that it must never be dealt lightly. The stilling, narcotic effect of the bite is a symbol of the quietness of the mind that will be needed in order to enact proper vengeance. The feeling is almost too much and the taur can feel th poison coursing through his veins and almost driving him into unconciousness, it is the thought of Avenging his parent's death that he is able to hold on. Suddenly the creatures are gone and he feels the effects of the poison lift from his body.

You have proven yourself well, but an Avenger of Jancassis must also have his emotions fully under control and is deadly, resolute and unwavering. This next test will see if you can cope admist the sea of anguish often present in those who have been woefully wronged and deliver vengeance in a completely dispassionate manner. The cleric is then transported to the mouth of a cave and told he must recover the symbol of Jancassis from within. After following the tunnel a few yards he turns the corner and enters a room with several women of unsurpassed beauty. You must be the newest initiate, welcome. Turning to speak to the women, his mind giving in to the primal, he is brought back to reallity and feels the harsh sting of metal between his shoulder blades.

You must learn to control your emotions Horned One. To lose focus so easily and early into your task, you didn't even make it to the real challenges of this test. Come back when you can control and supress your urges and focus on your task.

With that the taur is transported to an isolated spot outside of Mud Town not far from the warehouse they found the mole in. It was as if no actula time had passed, and despite having no physical injuries Bosk finds himself in utter confusion and it takes the entire morning before regaining his senses. Slowly he makes his way back to the shop, cleans up again and prepares for the party at Harls. All the while he thinks about his failure and becomes more resolute to succeed if allowed to take the test again.

ooc:Test 1 Passed, Test 2 FAILED Bosk has to wait one more lvl before trying for avenger again and spent 6 hours in the confused state.

Ransy would like to contribute his share to the shop, perhaps he can pay for the room which one of the others had built (Valla, Cesar, those who've left us); how much would that be?

Bosk (James) AC: 16/11/15 HP 27 of 31 Spells

The rooms are 100gp per 10'x10' section, which is enough for 1 medium sized person. Valla never paid for a room, but Cesar and Mara both did.

This might have been overlooked because it was just as Jim was leaveing, but you already have a room. On July 20th Jim said he was building a room for everyone except Zeoll and Mara and asked if this was correct. Zeoll and Mara each paid for a room and no one posted that they did not want a room. So I would suggest you subtract the 100 gp from your CS and we can save the two extra rooms for new or returning players or use them as guest rooms.

Both Zeoll and Bosk are introduced to the very few followers that make up Herrert's flock here. Zeoll meets a Stnger, and learns from her the art of crafting rumors, and when to spread and not to spread them. Bosk feels the calling to serve even more deeply, and he endures extreme abuse in testing his capabilities. He passes one test, and fails another. So it is that he comes to his senses in a remote part of Mudtown, with one human male unconscious at his feet, and another impaled but still alive on his horns. Confused after his ordeal, he had evidently mistaken them for enemies, and attacked. What does he do in the aftermath of this attack he has made on innocents?

Ransy senses no evil in Server, and determines that his group is a small cult, financed by a missionary charity out of Farungia seeking to spread the worship of Flower to the lands in the South where the Gods of the Wold are relatively unknown. They are grateful for Ransy's help. They seem happy but poor, and Ransy feels he has spent his money well.

A few days have passed, and it is time for the party at house of Harls.

Maikill works on his room and spiffies up his armor for the party.

Bosk bathes and dresses for the party, thinking to buy a bottle of wine as a gift.

Zeoll also gets ready and hopes to be able to perform.

After working in the shop, Beriothian cleans up and joins the group for the party.

Ransy takes a bath too and ponders how to invest in the shop. It seems that the residential rooms are all arranged. Beri might tell him that the inventory of the shop could be improved. [OOC: What is it the shop actually sells? And is it open to the public yet? Sorry not to know that!]

In Maple Lane, Harls has evidently worked hard to make this a real block party! Decorative cloths hang from the windows. There is a juggler and three rope-dancers. There is a spit with a boar. As soon as you appear, Harls rushes up, grinning. "Please, join the family feast in the back yard," he says. There, you find tables set up -- even with two huge place settings for the taurs. The entire clan -- must be 40 people -- are here dancing and drinking. And once you arrive, it is time to eat!

The shop isn't set up to make us any money at the moment, just to break even as far as our daily living expenses and to pay Sanji, Jillian, and Hemust to run the shop.
