Battle on the Plains, Part One

DM Cayzle - Things on legs and things on wings
Monday September 20th, 2010 4:33:17 PM

After good-byes, you set out. You are careful with your watches. You move cautiously. You try to be alert for watchers, and for A night passes, and two, and three. The natural flora and fauna leave you alone. Nothing out of the ordinary disturbs your rest.

By the way, if you come back to the site of your battle, it would seem that it is undisturbed, except by scavengers. Please make a survival check ...

If you make a DC12, please Highlight to display spoiler: {It was wolves.}

If your roll makes a DC16, also please Highlight to display spoiler: {You see tracks of at least one big alpha wolf, big as a horse.}

If your survival check also beat a DC20, then please Highlight to display spoiler: {You find some drops of fresh blood, and you think the wolves were attacked and scattered. There is no sign at all of any attacker!}

On the morning of the fourth day, as you get closer to Bryn Baraz, please make a spot check ...

If you make a DC15, please Highlight to display spoiler: {You see an eagle several miles away, soaring in the updrafts.}

If your spot check also beat a DC20, then please Highlight to display spoiler: {Hey! That's no eagle! It looks like maybe a small flying machine!}

DM Cayzle - Prisoners Chased!
Monday September 20th, 2010 4:39:05 PM

To recap: The two slaves snuck out of the mine, which is located at the bottom dead end of a canyon. Then they crept through a small settlement in the canyon, (including a larger building, once maybe a church, where they had been barracked). They climbed up canyon wall, slew two guards, and made a break for it.

That night, they were lucky, and there was no pursuit. But in the morning, they heard the raspy baying of the Draakh Hound, and they knew that a chase was under way! Likely several thrul at the least. The question was, would there be pursuit from above?

Alexi bows to Muata and accepts the lance. "I will use it well and make the kill marks on it so you know how much honor you have given me," he says with a wide smile.

Craft check on the lance for it's quality (ie. masterwork? Alexi has Craft - lance), d20+7= 14

OOC: Alexi will keep Lupin with him then.

On their first evening Alexi agrees with the watch order, although he's nervous working with Keela, such as he always is when 'alone' with a woman. Although they've fought many times together and she's always come through amazingly, he's never actually 'worked' with her.

He fights the urge to always be near her watch spot. "Gotta keep our watches synchronized, but not overbering," he reminds himself. "She is very capable, just keep your eyes and ears attentive..."

Survival Check: d20+1=2! ha!

Spot Check d20+2= 8
Lobo Spot Check d20+4= 10. well, that's what you get for being in the middle of the pack.

Monday September 20th, 2010 9:13:38 PM

Charek rides along oblivious to any sign or knowledge of where or even if there was a battle.

As they approach Bryn Baraz, he points out that there seems to be an eagle like creature up over there in the air.

As the group heads through the old battle site, Garret looks around and says, "Looks like wolves came through here and cleaned up."

Just before the group heads past the site, Garret stops and looks to the side. After a moment he says, "Wow. Look at this. One of those wolves was absolutely huge -- at least as big as a horse! And look here," he continues, "There's fresh blood. It almost looks like the wolves were chased away by...something. I can't tell what, though."

Garret quickly looks up and says, "I wonder if one of those flying airships came by while the wolves were here."

As he looks, Charek points out the eagle. Garret looks and says, "Oh yes, I see it. Are you sure we left our friend Sjurd back with the Ahote? This wouldn't be the first time we've seen him flying around like an eagle. We are getting very close to Bryn Baraz."

Rolling spot.... a Natural 1!!?!?!? Egad.

I'll use a hero point to re-roll this beast. 25, show me what you got Cayzle!

With heroic hawklike vision, Zeph spots the flying machine from far away and says, "Hey guys, check out the flying device, we better take cover quickly or they will spot us and send out an attack." Zeph says as he tries to duck out of sight. Zeph will try to quickly look for a cave, dwelling, or large burrow that could possibly hide several horses and adventurers.

Then Zeph thinks about what Garret said, "Wolves? You don't think that the LIzardmen could be employing Worgs or something eh? Ya think they could be hunting for us?" and Zeph shudders at the scary thought... and pulls out his Composite Long bow and crouches.

DM Cayzle - Flying Machine
Wednesday September 22nd, 2010 4:17:22 PM

Last bit of Ahote Business: Alexi thanks Muata, and examines the lance. Its make is excellent. (masterwork). Meanwhile, Jet's former mount laughs and is pleased to promise him future foals. "I would be honored," he says.

Then it is time to leave the valley's refuge behind.

On the way to Bryn Baraz, neither Jet nor Alexi are particularly keen-eyed.

At the battle site, Garret cleverly deduces that a magical flying machine probably interrupted the feasting of the wolves. Keela confirms his observations.

Charek is the first to see the "eagle," and then so does Keela and Garret. But any wonder that it might be friend Sjurd is conclusively put to rest by hero-eyed Zeph, who declares it to be a flying machine. It is far off enough that likely you have not been seen, but Zeph suggests taking no chances.

Garret agrees and orders the team to dismount and lay low. After a few minutes of watching from the grasses, it seems to you that the machine is flying at an angle from your path. You could intercept it if you wanted, or you could avoid it by going in the opposite direction. But you are pretty certain that it lies between you and Bryn Baraz.

After a bit of watching, it seems to Jet, Alexi, and Keela that it is very much like the one that Keela downed with a spell that incapacitated the pilot.

OOC: I'll post for the escapees after they post.

The two Slave stop for a few moments a have a quick word with each other, both decide that the need for speed and distance still out way the need for stealth. Also from past experiences with other slave escapes attempts and the howls on the air, they can be sure that their former masters have released the hounds ands retrieval teams to return them. With the knowledge of what awaits them if caught they renew there running with another burst of enthusiasm . If there is water source near by they will both follow or run through it to mask there trail but other then that will keep eyes open to the sky and behind them for the trackers.

Garret says, while watching from cover, "That's a big flying machine. I can't imagine a way to bring that down. If we were to attack it, I imagine they could just sit up there and attack us as long as they wanted. Anyone good a throwing flaming arrows?"

OOC:
Exactly how big are these things? I had been picturing flying cities with hundreds of people, but now I'm getting the feeling that they're small 2-3 lizard machines...

Alexi (AC: 19/11, HP:58/58) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:37/37)
Wednesday September 22nd, 2010 8:56:28 PM

To answer Garret's inquiry on Tarketh's grove, Alexi describes in good detail that first day of travel.

Vol 2, Chpt 1: "Mid-way through the first week, a crew of Halflings arrived and set to work digging a burrow large enough for Tarketh and his assistant in the hill by the stream, building up the roof with sod. On the final day, having finished by whitewashing the interior, they departed happily with a crate of rootstock for grapes.
Tarketh showed Fatine the inside of the barrow he commissioned. "I have no worries for the rootstock. I have never known a Halflling to fail at gardening when it comes to growing something that will eventually find its way to their stomach! The grapevines were a fair trade for their labor." The inside of the barrow was one big room with a large hearth jutting out from one wall.
"A string fastened to the corner---there, and to the wall---there, with a cloth draped over will give you some privacy." The druid explained that he planned to break down the wagon and recycle the parts for furniture, and a small cart.
The halfling-built barrow seemed, in it's way, appropriate. Fatine emerged to walk a few hundred paces distant and look back at how the new home sat in the land around it, and picturing a loosely built shack with plenty of ventilation next to it to serve as an alchemist laboratory."

Alexi smiles, "That's for the inside. The outside, which was pretty barren, like all of the Bryn Baraz valley, changed considerably due to the High Druid's skills and the aid of a magical item.

Vol 2, Chpt 6: "The others were just a curious to see Tarketh and what he would say about the Ambush Drakes and followed after the witch as well.
"Not sure he'll want much to do with them carcasses judging by the smell of 'em," the guard commented as they left, a swarm following their wake.
They followed the wall as it led towards the cliffs. Tarketh's cabin had been build near the wall, where the stream ran under a wall section. A few moments along the wall and Fatine came to the cops of trees that had sprung up around the area. She paused a moment for the way seemed impassible in the dark. She remembered the trees but they seemed much bigger and thick brambles, grasses, and willow thickets blocked the way.
However Beren spotted a narrow path and dismounting, they all followed it. A few moments more and they entered a small clearing with the dark shape of a timber and sod cabin. A dim glow emanated from one of the small windows and a shadowy figure could be seen moving about inside.

"So you see," Alexi finished with a smile, "there is, er, was, er, could be, plenty of room to hide the horses and us. Well, at least until they figure out something is killing off their guards, ha!"

With the sighting of the lizard flying machine, Alexi quickly dismounts and suggests the other to do the same, "Keep a low profile." OOC: yeah, i know, we've already done that.

"Perhaps we can do what the Ahote showed Jet to do, tie tall grasses around our mounds to make them look like a bunch of weeds from high up."

He goes about collecting tall reeds and grasses but since the flying machine looks like it is heading in a different direction, he drops this bundle.

"Garrett," Alexi says beaming, "Keela brought one down with some magic missiles. Those flying machines are small but carry half a dozen or so lizards, with one lizard steering it. Keela killed the one steering it and it crashed, killing the others."

He goes on to explain. "The lizards inside the flying machine can jump out of them and sort of glide down, so the machine doesn't have to land in order to unload its troops. And these flying machines are just one type. There's another one, much larger, that floats in the air, carried by a large round ball that must have magic on it to make it float. That one carries a lot more troops.

"But the biggest one, that is, the city, is a huge mountain that looks like it has been uprooted from the foundations of the hearth. It is miles in diameter and has thousands of these flying machines buzzing around it. It floats across the sky like a diseased cloud."

To Jet he says, "You know these are scouts. Wonder what they are looking for. I'm game on knocking out a scout. We have these hats, that should allow us to get close enough for some good target shooting. What do you say, Jet?"

DM Cayzle - Flying Machine Background Info
Thursday September 23rd, 2010 7:39:20 AM

from prior DM posts

Jet, Alexi, and Keela have seen two kinds of flying machines as well as the actual floating mountain-city of Al Mathir.

SMALL FLYING MACHINES

Each flying machine is the size of a wagon. They fly at 200 feet per round These are strange wooden birdlike machines, with a "body" and "head" under a pair of "wings." Each carries up to five humanoids ... a small figure -- a "kothrul" -- is in the head of each machine, and four humanoids -- "thruls" -- in each body. The "body" and "head" are an open framework, so that the riders are exposed to the air, but the framework gives some cover. They look, from so far away, sort of like birds with wings that do not flap. That the craft is generally triangular, slightly larger than a wagon, with the pilot sitting in the nose. The wings are stubby and move somewhat, but do not flap. In the back are two big rotating blades, kind of like a short segment of a blade barrier, if you have ever seen, or maybe heard of, that spell. The entire structure is made of wood and canvas, with open gaps for windows. Those within gain the benefit of regular cover.

You have examined the wreckage of a crashed flying machine. The wooden and canvas framework was shattered. At the heart of it you found a triangle of three welded metal bars, 10 feet long on each side, with a crossbar under the pilot's seat. The entire craft was anchored to this metal frame, and the frame (one per craft) is moderately magical.

Speculation: If you wanted to attack or disable one of these flying machines, you might attack the pilot (that proved very key to downing two of these machines in previous combat). You might slash the wings. You might attack the blades. What the effects of these might be you do not know. It might well occur to you that alchemist's fire or a fireball or scorching ray would be effective. If you threw a thunderstone, you could trigger it by hitting a part of the frame of the thing. Call it AC8. A tanglefoot bag might make for trouble, of one sort or another, though likely not enough to bring it down. And when the craft rises, it is very reminiscent of a Levitate spell. So it seems at least partly magically powered.

LARGE RED ORBS

You have only seen these from a long distance. You know very little about them. Here is a description you do have:

You see a round red sphere floating in the air far above you. Maybe it is relatively small and only a few hundred feat away. Maybe it is much larger, and several thousand feet in the air. To a modern eye, used to aircraft and blimps and hot air balloons, this would be nothing remarkable. But to a resident of the Wold, at this place, this time, it could only be a work of great magic surpassing that of a flying carpet, for example, especially since there are creatures riding in a basket underneath.

Garret nods to Alexi and says, "I agree. Let's keep moving forward and see if we can take that one out. That should stir them up appropriately, eh? Anyone have one of those fireball spells at the ready?"

The two slaves again stop for a moment and take a breather. They look around at the surounding and see if there is any place that jumps out and says go here. If nothing strikes them as a safer route they will continue to run the way they were going already again going for speed and distance. Quietly the male says the other " come love soon we will be safe then we rest bit for now we mist hurry the thrul are looking for is now". With a soft voice the small female replys " I know love but I tired and need food and sleep soon I am so tired" she says as she leans on her companion for support. She tries desperately to find some form of safety They are soon running again

I am interested in what everyone's main abilities seem to be. As I have just joined you all fairly recently I am still trying to figure out just where I can fit in with you all, and how we can best function as a unit, both in combat and other situations. I am an axe fighter, though I have some skill with a crossbow and can do a small bit of healing.

Garret Goodbarrel [AC:26 HP:33/33]
Thursday September 23rd, 2010 7:18:06 PM

OOC:
Garret: He's a monk, but he's a halfling. That makes him odd and a bit underpowered. However, I envision him as someone who can attack a lot and hit quite often, but he won't do much damage when he does. He's also got a (relatively) good AC, so he can get in and fight, but his hit points are a little low, so if he's outclassed, well, he's roadkill. So, pretty much Garret is a combat guy and can do well ranged or in close combat.

Zeph AC22 HP 42/42

Flank em with me Charek. ;)Personality - borderline emo. Also- Cayzle, do we see whats happening with the halflings?)

Zeph ponders for a moment... and then he speaks slowly, realizing what imminent danger the group may be walking into. He speaks up, "Guys and gal...I have a question: are we powerful enough to take back the city by force? Those big lizards nearly killed me in two hits and I couldn't touch them with their full armor. I'm sure someone remembers what their lances feel like. I think we should lay low and collect information before rushing in." Zeph says as he draws his bow and notches an arrow, ready to follow the group if he is voted down.

Then Zeph thinks about how to take out the Flying Machines, "Well, I can throw a tanglefoot bag, alchemist fire, or thunderstone a good 30 feet. And I can shoot an arrow about 120 somewhat reliably.... Ever wanted to try tying a thunderstone to an arrow?" Zeph says with a bit of a chuckle.

"Or... we can commandeer one of the big red balloon like things and meet them in the sky." Zeph says with an even bigger smile.

Cayzle, do we see whats happening with the halflings?

"Hex no, ye swabs! They be a goodly fathom or three out from ye's present position! Arrr!"

(It's pirate week in the Wold!)

(How long is a fathom? Maybe I meant "knot"? You do not see them, is the point!)

OOC: well, a Fathom is a measure of depth under water. A knot is a measure of speed over water. Leagues may be the word you are looking for, or cubits? Ye Pirates need to spend more time on land, hardy-har-har.

Charek: Alexi is a fighter, specialized in mounted combat, with a second specialty of two-weapon fighting.

IC: Alexi looks at Zeph, "Ye be very brave, my friend. However, those flying machines do not get very close. They swoop down to some 50 feet or so. The occupants jump out from there and glide down somehow. Keela hit the little guy up front with magic missiles, but most her other spells were just not within range. Fire arrows are a good tactic, but I'd be afraid of starting numerous grass fires with our misses."

"On the other hand, if we find one on the ground, one of us can disguise himself with our hats and try to get aboard and see how they work."

Alexi sighs. "Perhaps Jet is right. Better keep to our goal of Bryn Baraz. If it does come our way, we take it down. But otherwise we may find ourselves on a wild rabbit chase."

Jet describes his fighting philosophy...

"I don't waste time with bows or spears unless I can't get to my enemies. I don't have a lot of respect for people that avoid direct confrontation with the enemy!" With that said, he makes a sideward glance to Alexi before he continues. "I expect anyone that says they are a warrior to be in front of me or beside me. If you are not close enough for me to heal you in combat, then I hope you have a way of keeping yourself alive."

I will be leaving for out of town tomorrow, so no post again until Monday. Have a great weekend folks.

Friday September 24th, 2010 12:08:24 AM

"Oh, I'm not good at anything," Keela assures Charek. "That is, I can cast some spells, but they generally go wrong. I can cook, though."

"Perhaps we should concentrate on taking out small bands of the lizards when we can," she says, "rather than trying a frontal assault."

DM Cayzle - Hunkering Down
Friday September 24th, 2010 7:59:02 AM

The party hunkers down, hiding as best they can in the scrub and field-grasses.

Garret wonders about those flying machines, and the conversation turns to the experiences that party members have had with them.

Alexi gives some details on Tarketh's hut, and Garret and Zeph come to realize that they stayed in that same hut and spied on the lizards from it when first they came to Bryn Baraz. It is that same one that was outside the outpost walls.

Alexi thinks the lizards are hunting. Jet thinks they are patrolling. As you watch, you see the flier zig and zag, headed sort of closer to you. In the distance, you hear a strange baying, as of hounds, hounds with voices like monsters. Alexi's experience in the Mailed Fist suggests to him that this is not a patrol, and his first instinct is likely right.

The flier is more or less a couple hundred feet up, for the most part.

Jet seems to want to move on to Bryn Baraz. Garret wants to intercept and down the flier. Charek considers the party's capabilities before leaping into a fight.

Zeph is hesitant to attack the settlement. But he is almost eager to try for a flier.

Keela denigrates her own abilities, but a memory comes into her head, of a god who seems to have a higher opinion of her than she does herself. [Don't forget your blessing!]

The group, hunkered down, seems torn. To the village? To the fliers? Stay low? We need a group consensus!

Garret Goodbarrel [AC:26 HP:33/33]

Garret watches the ship fly and chuckles a little at Keela. He says, "Cook? Maybe you could do some cooking for the lizardmen and we reduce their numbers that way!"

As he watches the ship more, he continues, "Alexi, I think you were right. They look like they're hunting for something to me. Knowing what they're doing there these days, I'm guessing there's some escaped slaves over there. We can help them and at the same time perhaps get more information about what's going on in Bryn Baraz. That might help us," he says as he glances over towards Zeph, "determine what we can do next and how we can help that city."

"For now, let's move closer to that patrol and see if we can find a way to bring it down. I'd hate to have it drop off it's occupants and then let it fly back for more, so we really need to focus our attacks on the driver of that thing, if we can get close enough."

Garret starts moving in the direction of the ship, looking for tall trees, or other ways to gain a height advantage on the flying thing.

On the morning of the third day, Charek is contacted by Katarina. She asks for a full report. And she says that she has scried the mine. The lizards have moved back in, and are using a slave force of halflings to work the mine, along with the smaller lizards.

So, with a good Int check, or whatever, one could surmise escaped slaves, probably halfling. :)

IC: "That sound! That baying type sound, different but yet much the same! Those lizards are not hunting game to eat. They are hunting something else. For game to eat, they could just spot it from the flying machine and kill it from there, then have a mounted patrol pick up the carcass. No, this is something entirely different."

Alexi removes his helmet and wipes his brow. "My guess is, whether we go to Bryn Baraz or not won't make a difference. Those hunting animals will catch our scent soon enough and make a bee-line towards us. Let's prepare for battle and take it to them. However, it will still be a good idea to put on our diguises anyway. Any second of hesitation that causes the lizardmen is time gained for our side."

He then puts on his Hat of Disguise and pictures a lizardman. "Well, do I pass, at least from a distance?" he asks.

DM Cayzle - To engage the hunters?
Monday September 27th, 2010 7:20:17 AM

Alexi and Garret think back over Katarina's news and deduce that maybe the lizards are chasing escaped slaves. Zeph thinks that might be a reasonable possibility, once he is reminded of what the dwarf wizard told them. The party [OOC: Some or just all?] dons their hats so as to resemble medium and small lizard-types.

Keela offers a fly spell to use to ascend and attack. Alexi ponders how an invisible flier could get total surprise ... And Charek suggests not destroying the craft, seeing as it could be very useful!

Following Garret's command, the group starts to move cautiously toward the sound of the baying unknown hunter-beasts. Are you riding? Sneaking and moving at half speed? Even if you are sneaking the horses are still pretty obvious. But you note that the flying craft and the beasts following them are still maybe a couple miles away. The flier could reach you in about a minute on a straight course, but it is flying a spiral zigzag, and not moving in a straight line at all. It could take a half hour or more to reach what you might presume to be the party of hunters.

DM Cayzle - Hard choices for those who would be free
Monday September 27th, 2010 7:32:33 AM

As the escaped slaves run, the voice of a hunting beast rises behind them, about a mile off. You know that the beast will never give up, and it moves faster than you. Water is rare in the badlands, and the chance you'll stumble on a stream is pretty small. You realize that there's only one beast following you, although its distinctive voice sounds like more.

Monday September 27th, 2010 11:11:42 AM

OOC: guys, if we all done the hats, we shouldn't need to sneak. Besides, the less distance we need to cover to get to them, the less tired our horses will be. So attracking attention should be our goal.

Just my thoughts.

PS. If we don't have an Ivis spell, the hat could be used to be made to look like a lizardman with wings. That could buy the flyer enough 'curiousity time' to get close enough to blast them, then run.

Let's be creative here, eh?

Garret Goodbarrel [AC:26 HP:33/33]
Monday September 27th, 2010 11:58:23 AM

Garret nods and agrees with Alexi. "We need to stop that machine."

As Charek comments, Garret thinks a moment, then says, "It certainly would be nice to capture that machine for our use. However, I think it is more important that it does not escape us to head back and warn the rest of the lizards. Our first priority should be stopping that thing, second, capturing it. I think the idea of flying up towards it would be great -- any ideas on a way to take out that driver in one shot? Or any way to get them to land the thing? Could we set up as lizards here, and make like we've captured whatever they're looking for?"

A moment later, Garret says, "Wait! We know they have halfling slaves. What if you guys pretend to be lizards and make like you've captured me? Do you think you could gesture for them to land, then we could take them by surprise? I don't know if they will land it, though."

He looks at the flying thing and says, "We have a little time before they will get this far. Do you think we could set up an ambush for them if we can convince them to land? I don't mind being bait."

Zeph laughs. "That is the craziest and best idea I've heard all day Garret. What are we waiting for? I volunteer to be part of the ambush." he says, knowing he is pretty good at hiding.

Keela
Monday September 27th, 2010 5:14:32 PM

Keela listens to Garret's plan, frowning. "I'm not sure they'd land, though," she says. "We don't know how those flying machines work--they may have to take off from a height. So, they wouldn't land here, if they couldn't get to flying again."

She tries to think in three dimensions. "If I had a flying ship," she says slowly, "I'd want to use it to look for things. I'd make prisoners walk, rather than ride in the ship. I don't know, Garret. I think asking them to land may make them suspicious."

Alexi grins. His friends are pretty creative. He is used to being the one with zany ideas, only to get shot down by Jet. It felt good to have company in that area.

"Brilliant Garret! That's the way I like a leader to think!" Alexi blurts.

"Here's my Cunning Plan.
Those good at hiding hide. The others disguise ourselves as lizards who have a prisoner.
They are lured here by our disguises and the halfling 'prisoner'. When they get close, Keela Webs (OOC: range 100' +10/lvl) the interior so they can't jump out and the driver has trouble steering. Next, Keela flies up and casts her Scortching Ray at the driver. The webs will catch fire too and maybe the structure. Keela then flies under the machine and stays right up against the bottom so they can't see her so she can get her Magic Missile spell ready.

Meanwhile we take off our hats and taunt them.

If they jump out, thinking there's only a couple of us and get ambushed by the others. Keela casts her Magic Missile spell at the driver and flies back under the machine while we slaughter the warriors."

Alexi spread his arms wide to absorb the praise of his Most Cunning Plan Yet.

OOC: addendum - Keela flying up and casting Web may succeed in being the Surprise Round if we've bluffed them enough. That means a free round for Keela. Next Round we go first and Keela scortches them and goes under the machine.

The machine is 'a coule hundred feet up', but may descend some to investigate. Hopefully that's what will happen. Keela's Web can reach 160' so it doesn't have to come down much. The Web may even cover the propellers. With it's maneuverability gone and the pilot having trouble steering it, who knows what can happen?

A Feeblemind spell on the pilot would be good too. :)

Garret Goodbarrel [AC:26 HP:33/33]

A broad smile crosses Garret's face as Alexi outlines the plan. "I love it. We can keep right to the edges of some cover, that should force them in low enough that the web can work. And if the web fails, we run under cover and wait for them to follow where we ambush them there. And if we are real lucky, the web will keep the flying machine from getting destroyed. Jet, you can be the lead part of the ambush and be the first to hit those that come down."

OOC:
Can I prepare an action for a surprise round so that Garret could throw a stone at the driver after the web appears?

DM Cayzle - A plan is born!
Wednesday September 29th, 2010 6:16:25 PM

DM Apologies: Sorry for missing yesterday's post. Kudos for continuing to plan and plot.

DM Clarifications: The flying machine is quite a ways off. You know not to cast any spell with a duration under 10 minutes. Hold off on short duration spells until you are closer. By the way, the stubby wings on the craft are at "axel" level, were the machine a cart or wagon, which it is kind of the same size as.

The group talks things over while hiding and comes up with a plan of sorts. Given the distance involved, Alexi wisely points out that without actually attracting attention, you may go completely unnoticed!

The group will be disguised as lizard-folk with a Halfling captive, who will be Garret. The party will motion to the flying craft. Charek, Zeph, Jet, and Alexi will be disguised as appropriately-sized lizards.

Keela will cast a Fly spell -- on whom? She hopes to cast a Web spell as well, which she thinks would fill the open-air vehicle quite well. The range on the Web is 150 ft. Will you simply hope to lure the flying craft within range with your deception? Or will it be Keela who gains the Fly spell, so she can fly up there and cast the spell? Will Keela be disguised? As some imaginary lizard with wings? That would be pushing the capabilities of the hat!

The idea is discussed of using a scorching ray to then set the Webs, and possibly the lizards inside and maybe even the craft itself, alight. Ranged attacks from the ground could be triggered by the appearance of the webs, you think.

If the craft is in flight, Keela will likely have to be near its altitude, so that she can see inside it to cast the Webs into it.

Alexi suggests that someone with stealth skill be hiding. Anyone? Zeph?

Alexi hopes that the flying craft will land. Keela is wisely skeptical that the flier would land at all.

Jet listens quietly, then seeks divine advice from the god of luck. The spell reminds him of a sacred aphorism beloved of those who honor Wardd: "Let he who is without fear roll the first die! Go forth, and roll some more!" The common interpretation of the saying is that it is good to take a chance.

Garret ponders a moment and says, "How big is that web spell? I was picturing casting the web to connect the craft to the ground so that the craft couldn't fly away and that the web itself might actually give the craft a place to crash where we might take over the vehicle after taking care of the lizards..."

Alexi (AC: 19/11, HP:58/58) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:37/37)
Wednesday September 29th, 2010 8:54:35 PM

OOC: hmm.... let's see:
1) i don't remmeber Alexi hopping the craft would land. no big deal though.
2) the idea was for Charek and Zeph to hide. Jet, Alexi, and Keela disguised as Lizard folk, i guess leading the horses, with Garret on the end of rope as prisoner.
3) Keela would wait until the craft lowered enough (I just read the Fly spell, MV is 30ft UP, 60ft horizontal, 120ft down), so that would mean waiting until the craft descended to 30' off the ground before she could fly up and target the interior with a Web.

Having said all that, a plan for if they drop low should be agreed upon and a plan for if they don't.

Anyone have Dispell Magic? It's range is 100' +10/lvl. That could get them to drop fast.

4) er, who's Kiri? oh yeah, that one's in a different game. You meant 'Keela'. :}

5) we do have Alchemist Fire, it's just a matter of someone getting close enough to have a decent chance to hit the craft. If it is hit from below, there'll be no chance the lizards can put it out and their craft will burn real good.

IC: Alexi watches the craft while waiting for Jet's ideas.

"The Web spell could only anchor the craft once it got within about 40 feet of the ground," she says. "And that's under the best circumstances; I'm not sure the craft would be a good enough anchor point to maintain the web's structural integrity. Maybe I should just Magic Missile the driver. If other people could shoot arrows at him at the same time, that might serve to take him out."

Garret continues to ponder, "It would be great if we could somehow capture that craft. I'm not sure if we could figure out how to drive it, but I still think that would be the best option. I wonder if we all attack the driver with ranged weapons and magic, if we could bring it down, then somehow use a web to stop it from crashing into pieces. Of course, at the same time, we'd have to deal with getting attacked by the rest of the crew in the machine... maybe if we all hit the driver, then, as it was crashing and the troops jumped out, if a web was thrown out to perhaps catch the craft and some of the attackers?"

"I'm not sure comandeering their vehicles is a good idea. It would be easy for them to find it and then us with magic once they knew it was missing. Not just that, but we wouldn't be able to carry our mounts in one, which would leave them and someone else on the ground with them while everyone else was in the air. Not to mention, learning how to fly one would be deadly if a mistake was made. A cure spell can only heal so much damage after a fall.

No, my idea would be, let us light a fire and let them know where they think we are, then we continue to make our way to the back entrance of Bryn Baraz. Let them believe we are still out here and avoiding them. Then, they will send a scouting party out to look for us, leaving Bryn Baraz less defended. That is my thoughts."

One thrown dagger hits home, and the beast snarls and backs off, choosing to lick its wound and wait for its brothers and sisters. But your triumph is short-lived, as you realize you have been separated! Where is your wife? Your soulmate? Alas, all you can do for the moment is run! RUN!

"On the other hand, due to the difficulty in getting a visual on the insides in order to get the web spell to work as I envisioned, I'm a mind to change my mind." At that Alexi belts out a laugh. "A mind to change my mind! Heh. Get that? Oh well."

"Perhaps it would be best if Keela and Zeph were hidden. The rest of us act as if we've capture someone."

Alexi puts his knuckle to his chin as he ponders something. "Well, this all could be mute if those hunting animals come first. They'll smell us for what we really are and a fight will invariably ensue. So Jet, I guess you are right. Simple is best. Let's get those Trackers here and let see how much fun we can have."

DM Cayzle - A plan refined
Friday October 1st, 2010 7:42:52 AM

Zeph suggests that it is not even necessary to fly. Keela thinks (per the DM's insertion into her brain) that IF the flying craft comes close enough to the ground, she could use it for an anchor point to literally anchor it. What chance it would have to pull free she does not know. But it is a clever idea. The problem is, would it come close enough to the ground? That is the biggest problem.

The other option is to Web the interior of the craft, which is definitely feasible, if she has the altitude to see into the interior.

Alexi says wisely that you need two plans, one for if the craft flies low, one if it does not.

Keela suggests a direct attack on the driver is an option -- one sure to crash the thing, but maybe your only hope if it stays 45 feet or more above the ground.

Garret wants a flying craft so bad he can taste it! He suggests using Web to cushion a crashing craft's fall. The problem is that a Web requires two opposed anchor points. What would be the anchor points? Theoretically, once a crashing flier came within 40 ft of the ground, a Web could go between the craft and the earth ... but how cushiony would that be? Maybe better than nothing?

Jet sees too many problems in trying to use a stolen flier. He urges destruction, distraction, and an approach from an unexpected quarter.

At this point, your patient DM needs a few people to post something like this ... "We get our disguises ready and move openly to the path of the flier." or "We try our best to guess where the flier will go and then we head there sneakily, with PCs X and Y in hiding and the rest disguised." Get it?

DM Cayzle - A meeting in the high grasses
Tuesday October 5th, 2010 11:49:33 AM

The group follows Garret's guidance, and moves to a clearing from which the flier will be sure to see them.

Garret poses as a captive Halfling, with fake bindings that will be easy to shed at a moment's notice.

Charek appears as smaller lizard, taking cover in the underbrush.

Alexi, disguised as a medium lizard, uses an improvised smoky torch to attract the flier's attention.

Jet, disguised as a medium lizard, holds Garret and tries to seem menacing.

Keela, disguised as a medium lizard, stands guard with Jet over "captive" Garret.

Zeph hides. When he sees the flier getting closer, he casts Shield. Zeph, are you disguised? As what? Please decide this second, as you read these words! ... Okay, all set?

At this point, the flier is about two rounds travel away ... call it 400 feet.

Galin runs and runs. The chasers on foot are not that close, but a flying craft has come way to close for comfort. Has he been spotted from above? He has no idea. At a run (spot 13), he also does not see the hiding Zeph (Hide 18), and almost runs right into him! He can see that there is a clearing ahead, where three thruls and a kothrul are holding an unfamiliar halfling prisoner and trying to gain the attention of the approaching flying craft. Zeph, what does Galin see when he meets you? You two are ten feet apart.

Keela, Jet, Garret, and Charek, please make Spot checks vs DC10 [chosen arbitrarily by the DM] to see Galin.

From behind the flying craft, you hear the strange bleating braying of the reptile hounds chasing Galin, who knows that they are at least a few minutes behind him.

Here, wear this hat and focus on looking like a lizard. I'm Zeph and these are my freedom fighters. We have everyone disguised as lizards and have a plan to take out that flier, using Garret, our halfling leader, as bait. Stay hidden with me." Zeph says, handing the hat to Galin and pointing in the direction of the flying machine the group is intending on taking.

Then he thinks again... and says to Galin, "What type of weapons do you use? I have a few short swords, daggers, and a warhammer if you are good with any of that... also, are you being followed?" Zeph says as he pulls out a short sword and hands it to the Halfling.

Zeph speaks quickly and softly to the escaped slave. He urges him to accept a magical item and to use it to don a disguise.

Galin, the escaped halfling slave, listens to Zeph and quickly follows the man's advice, adopting a quick disguise. The two exchange a few brief words.

Jet urges Garret to keep up his captured slave role for so long as possible. He takes in the new arrival, and tenses, but does nothing rash.

Charek is alert too -- very alert -- and he tenses as a drama is about to be played out.

Keela keeps her eyes right on the target. Just as in the first attack on Bryn Baraz, she can see and target the smaller lizard sitting in the nose of the craft, steering. Her view of the interior is much worse, and she can see that is has passengers, but that's it.

Alexi readies his lance and an alchemical fire.

The flying craft gets closer and lower. It takes another round to get about overhead, at which it is about 60 ft off the ground.

Any actions at this point?

A single medium lizard emerges, balances on the wing, and drops. As he falls, a cloak, like wings, unfurls below him, letting him reach the ground safely -- Keela, Jet, and Alexi have seen this before. He says something in a language you do not know. THe craft is hovering about overhead, and you can see the pilot's head and another lizard leaning out to look down.

Zeph, in hiding, offers Galin a flask of liquid fire, but is ignored.

Galin is standing next to him, but is not trying to hide. Frankly, it is all he can do not to rush out and attack.

Jet answers the lizard by throwing down the "captive" Garret, disguised as a slave, and beckoning to the driver of the flying craft above. The medium lizard's sense motive check untrained is a base +2, and I award him a +2 circumstance mod because not saying anything is a little suspicious. His senses are keen, but he is fooled (rolled a 22!). The driver is not suspicious in the least, and begins to circle around for a landing. Feel free to act at any arbitrary altitude.

Garret readies himself to spring into action as soon as that Web spell goes off.

Casting a Web that anchors between the craft (a moving target) and the ground is tricky, and Keela doesn't think it will hold. Casting a Web on the driver will not work because there's no place to anchor it. Ditto casting a Web on the lone lizard who jumped out. So, I hate to see everybody waiting for a Web to be cast, because they'll probably have along wait.]

Not quite believing that the bluff worked, Keela watches the craft as it circles to land. She also keeps an eye on the single lizard who already jumped out. She doesn't want to attack him yet; they'll have a better chance once the craft is on the ground.

She readies a Magic Missile for the first lizard to take a hostile action against the party.

DM Cayzle - Extra

Alexi (AC: 19/11, HP:58/58) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:37/37)
Friday October 8th, 2010 10:28:16 PM

OOC: i kinda mis-interpreted this statement, "so that the riders are exposed to the air", but now I see that the 'interior' is enclosed by a canvas. I guess. Much like a western style pioneer wagon I presume. So for Keela to get her web spell as I envisioned would not be possible. A good fireball through a window would be nice, but, alas...

Keela, just do what will be most effective, trying to knock it out while it still is airborn. Any little damage they take for a crash landing will help.

Cayzle, i had envisioned Jet tossing Garrett like someone would toss a sack of potatoes from a truck bed to a waiting handler on the ground. It would be like, "here, take this prisoner and deal with him." The idea is, of course, to get Garrett close to strike with surprise. Whether the lizard catches Garrett or just let's him plop to the ground is up to DM discretion as the DM envisions how the lizardman interprets Jet's action.

What are the relative positions of the guy on the ground, near Garret, and the craft. Are those in the craft watching? What's the guy on the ground doing? Basically, I'm looking to see if its possible to wait until the craft hits the ground and then attack the guy near Garret on the ground without the others noticing right away.

DM Cayzle - Landing Party
Monday October 11th, 2010 9:13:03 AM

A little more detail in the flying ship. It is a framework of wood anchored to the steel frame of the flying craft. Canvas is stretched over most of it -- including over the stubby wings -- but there are flaps and openings to allow easy and fast ingress and egress. There are no levers or physical controls that you have seen. The metal frame is not visible under the wood and canvas -- attacking it in particular would be very hard.

Charek stands ready, waiting to see what will happen.

Garret lays still on the ground at the feet of the lizard, playing the role of captive.

Jet walks over to where he anticipates the flying craft will land and waits for it. He thinks about how to attack it. It seems to him that the wood frame and canvas could be attacked and dismantled over time, but it would take at least a minute of solid hacking to actually do real damage to it. Watching the craft as it lands, he sees that there is some force pushing it from behind, but there is also levitation magic involved, as well.

Keela gets ready to cast Magic Missile.

Alexi watches the flying craft as it descends. He tries to figure out how to get a peek inside. He sees that there are flaps of canvas that look like they can be tied down. But now those flaps are all open, and he sees three more medium lizards within, in addition to the small lizard pilot.

The flying craft descends ... 40 feet ... 20 feet ... 10 feet ... and it stops, taking two rounds in the descent. Three more thrull jump out, obviously trained in this maneuver so as not to take any falling damage. Two of the three stand at attention, armed with crossbows, equipped like the one who is already present. The third has a chain shirt, a small shield, and a strange sword that splits into two blades for the upper third of its length. he has a badge of some kind on his armor.

The officer barks out a question.

Verbal Map: Were I at home, I would have a map, but we'll have to do without one for today. The clearing is 200 feet in diameter. The 15' by 10' flying craft is in the middle of the clearing, 10 ft up. From the flier to the edge of the meadow, in a line, are three thrull (including the officer), five feet from the hovering craft. Then ten feet away from them is Jet. Then 15 feet from him is the first thrull. Then Garret is five feet from the thrull. Then Alexi and Keela, ten feet along. Then Charek, another ten feet along. Then 40 feet away in the grasses at the edge of the meadow are Galin and Zeph hiding.

Jet can see the badge plain as day. He is the victim of Jets initial onslaught of attacks. Striding right up to the "captain" or whatever his rank is, he pulls out his Falchion in the same movement and tells everyone, "Keela and everyone else, take out the driver first, then the occupants. I will live as long as I can until you are done."

Then, using his domain power of Strength as a free action, he spins the blade through the air hoping it connects firmly with the badge boss.

Attack is a critical hit of 33, unconfirmed with 19 doing 18 damage and if critical is confirmed 16 more.

ooc: My apologies. I did not include the +4 strength (+2 modifier) in the attack rolls. Got ahead of myself again. They were included in the damage however.

IC: The thundering of hooves whizzes by Jet as Alexi charges past. Having heard Jet's instructions, and knowing what hell he would go through if he doesn't follow through, he flies by the three lizards as Jet slices with his Falchion. As he rides by the craft (Ride by Attack) he tosses his Alchemist Fire at the pilot.

Distance: 5' from horse to craft + x feet to pilot in craft = in 10' increment range so no distance penalty.
OOC: I'm thinking he does not have a straight line of attack vs the pilot so he can't charge plus, the alchemist fire splash may catch the craft, especially the canvas, on fire too.

Range Touch Attack d20+9= 27!
Dmg d6 = 2 fire damage and 1 fire damage to craft in 5' rad. Don't know if you need to make Craft saves vs fire to catch fire or not.

As Alexi's move action, he unslings his shield and readies it for next round.
AC at end of round would be 22/11

Ride check to negate 1 attack on Lobo, if necessary: d20 +14 = Lobo's AC this round 23.

OOC: Cayzle can help me here but I read the following:
[He sees that there are flaps of canvas that look like they can be tied down. But now those flaps are all open, and he sees three more medium lizards within, in addition to the small lizard pilot.]

However, Cover provides an AC bonus, not a Miss Chance, that's Concealment. I pictured that, Alexi basically being right next to the craft and the flaps open, Cover would not be in play. It's just tossing the flask into the window. So really the difference is a +4 AC bonus if Cayzle rules he has cover, no AC bonus if he doesn't due to proximity.

I'll cast grease on it and it should go up in flames.

Second time I've asked this OOC: Why oh why is there any reason to think that a Grease spell burns or makes things burn? I'm not playing that, unless I have a reason to.

Tuesday October 12th, 2010 9:37:59 PM

OOC: I've dealt with the Grease and fire before too in another Tap game. The adjudication was that Grease, in of itself, is not flamable. That is, it's not like a flask of oil. It's not your kitchen grease. It's more like that black gooie sticky stuff on your wheel axle and I don't think that kind is very flamable.

So, if we are going on Precedence in the Wold, the Grease spell will not aid in catching fire.

Just my thoughts.

Garret jumps up and disarms the startled lizardman.

Jet attacks with surprise, slamming the officer for 34 damage!

Charek shoots twice, hitting twice seeing as he takes his target by surprise. The DM rolls an extra damage and comes up with an extra 9, total 16 more damage to the officer.

Alexi charges the flying craft and hits the pilot for 2 fire damage, with another 1d6 to come next round. The splashed oil burns on the craft as well. [OOC: Cover improves AC but does not give a miss chance. And with that attack roll, Alexi hits fair and square.]

Keela hits the pilot with 12 hp of magic missile damage.

Zeph moves forward, shoots at the surprised disarmed lizard, and connects for 16 damage.

Galin, released to attack at last, leaps forward with his longstrider-enhanced speed to hit the lizard for another 6. It is sorely injured.

Lizard 1, disarmed, uses the withdraw action to move 60 feet away.

Lizards 2 and 3, shooting at Jet, both hit AC14, misses.

The officer attacks Jet with his strange blade. His strange blade crackles with energy. But both his swings are misses, one just barely.

The pilot spends the round putting out his fire.

(OOC: See, this is where a map would come in handy as many of my combat decisions depend on placement. Like, I would attempt to tumble behind the Lizard Captain and flank him with Jet, but I don't know how far away he is. Or I would cast Grease to try and trip up several of the mobs, but I don't know how many it would hit. Weighing options is difficult...)

Standard Action: First, Zeph decides that if his Grease spell could potentially trip 2 or three badguys (10foot square), then he will cast it at as many of their feet as the spell allows. Reflex DC 15 or fall prone. Balance check DC 10 to move out of it at half speed. I'm guessing that the two Lizards with crossbows are close to each other and probably close to teh Captain.

Move Action: Then, Zeph will put away his bow and draw his spiked chain and begin swinging it around his head while moving 30feet towards the Lizards with Crossbows... possibly positioning himself to tumble and flank the captain with Jet afterwards. But if not, then he will position himself outside the Grease spell, hoping to keep the Lizards trapped in its radius.

Zeph says aloud, "Though someone should feel free to flank them with me and keep em boxed in the Grease, I got a reach weapon... And maybe someone should hop in the craft and tackle that pilot before he tries to fly away. ".

..Spiked chain wont be a reach weapon once we switch to Pathfinder. That's ok though, I plan on abusing the General Wizard class ability to attack with a melee weapon within 30feet to deliver some interesting sneak attacks.

Cayzle - are you angry that we dont have a Ranger who's favored enemy is lizardkin? I know I am, and I'm even tempted to give Zeph some Ranger levels just for that purpose come pathfinder....

OOC: the Verbal map was good enough for me to picture the situation. For all practical purposes, all three lizards could be in the Grease. If the grease is centered on the middle one, and the other two are no more than 5' apart from him, that would get all three. But DM decided on two, that's ok.

IC: Alexi curses under his breath. Somehow he had hoped the others would have helped him kill the pilot. The magical missiles that slam into the Pilot Flambe puts a gin on his face. Thank you Keela! What a sweet girl!

But the pilot is still quite alive and now not very visible. As much as he hates too, necessity dictates that he leave Lobo and go for the pilot. Once more his favored attack is squandered!

OOC: the craft is hovering 10' above the ground. Standing on Lobo, Alexi should be able to reach the craft and haul himself aboard. My guess is there would be a Ride check (stand up on Lobo's back) and a Climb check (climb aboard). Since the Lizard Flambe is busy this round, there shouldn't be an AOO, righ?

Alexi drops his lance and tells Lobo to stand still. Then stands up on the Lobo's back.

Fast Dismount to stand on Saddle as a free action (a stretch here but hey) DC20: d20+14 = 32! saved a Move action here if DM allows.

Climb DC ?

OOC: This is what I picture. With Alexi standing on Lobo, he should be able to reach the top of the Craft's side. Gripping that, he jumps up and just hawls himself over. So here's two rolls, one for Jump and one for Climb and DM can figure out what happens.

Jump d20+2= 19
Climb d20-2 = 7

If Alexi makes it over that would be his Move. Since he can draw a weapon with a Move he draws his sword as he lands on the other side.

Assuming he makes it:
Poised now inside the craft and facing a smoking (assuming the lizard made his DC15 save) Alexi takes a swing at him (since the craft is only 10' wide, he should be in reach without Alexi having to move further)

MW Longsword Att d20+11 = 21, hit
Dmg d8+5 = 9

If his Climb failed, he tries the Climb again ( I picture his Jump succeeds but he's not quite over the side):
Climb d20-2 = 13 (this should get him the rest of the way over the side but use the rest of his actions, he still draws his sword).

DM: Muddle through that and let me know if I missed something or need to roll for something else. :)
BTW; he carries his shield over and that's calculated in the rolls. His shield has no Armor check penalty (Mithril Heavy shield) and his AC in header reflects that.

DM Cayzle - Round Two  d20+15=25 d20+10=30 d20+10=14 2d10(5+4)+13=22 2d10(7+3)+13=23 d20+10=11

Garret attacks and misses.

Zeph casts a Grease spell and catches the two lizard crossbowers in it. They make reflex saves at +6 ... a 15 (makes it) and a 12 (falls prone). Zeph draws and moves closer.

Galin moves to the edge of the grease and pokes the standing-but-off-balance lizard, hitting for 8 damage.

Charek fires twice and misses.

Jet attacks the officer again, hitting hard for 15.

Alexi heroically leaps from his mount to the flying craft, struggling to board it. He jumps well, but does he manage to grab hold and pull himself in?

Using the rules for dangling over a chasm or gap, getting up requires a move action and a DC 15 Climb check. So Alexi would need a climb check vs DC15 to climb in, and if he fails by more than four, he falls. Alexi rolled a 7 on his climb, so he falls. He rolled again (Using a hero point? Please confirm if so.) and got a 13, which is enough to hold on, but not enough to climb up.

Keela fails to act.

==========

Enemy actions:

The Officer attacks Jet again, this time hitting twice. His damage is 1d10 with the blade, +6 Str (2H) +6 power attack +1d10 electrical +1 enhancement, or 2d10+13. Two hits inflict 45 damage to Jet.

Lizard 2, lying prone in the Grease, uses a double move to crawl out of it. That provokes AoOs from Zeph and Chareck, at +4 to hit. He remains prone.

Gambling that neither Zeph nor Charek has Combat Reflexes, Lizard 3 fires his crossbow at Zeph, missing with a natural 1.

Lizard 1 takes off running at 120 ft per round. That puts him 180 feet away total, and he has concealment in the grasses. He is headed in the direction of the hounds baying.

The pilot, seeing Alexi trying to board, reseats himself and orders his flying craft to ascend. It rises 50 feet up in the air. It is now 60 feet up and has moved away 50 feet as well in the 45-degree ascent.

IF Lizard 3 is not dead, then Zeph will stay and keep attacking.

Flavor text:

Zeph sees one lizard fall to the ground in the grease spell and laughs at him. He sidesteps the crossbow bolt from Lizard 3 and looks at him angrily as he whips his spiked chain around his neck and pulls with a viscous and cruel might two times, most likely pulling the Lizard to the ground as blood spews from the scaly man's neck.

If the lizard dies from this, then Zeph will chase down Lobo, Alexi's horse and attempt to mount him in order to chase down the Lizard who ran away.

"We cannot let any one of them escape with information about our tactics, especially our disguises." Zeph shouts.

Some advice to everyone: it is always good to post alternative actions just incase something changes based on another player's actions. For example, Charek, Jet, and Galin are all attacking the Lizard Captain. What if it only takes one of you to kill him? Everyone should post alternative things just incase so your turn isnt wasted and the DM doesnt have to make decisions for you, such as redirecting your attacks.

OOC: To clear up events:
• Round 1: Keela magic-missiled the pilot, and Alexi hit him with a alch fire. In his turn, the pilot put out the fire.
• Round 2: Alexi jumped on and dangled from the flier. The pilot took his seat and went up 50 feet.
• Round 3 (Posted below) Alexi falls off and the pilot sends the flier 200 ft away.

Garret slings at the pilot and hits for 3.

Galin runs up to the officer and hits (once, not twice, sorry) for 5.

Jet also attacks the officer, hitting hard for 15.

Zeph uses the advantages granted to him by the Grease spell to use sneak attacks and kill Lizard 3.

Alexi gives it his best shot, but weighed down by his armor, he loses his grip and falls 50 feet. He takes 16 real damage and 4 nonlethal.

Charek charges and hits for 9. That's enough to take the officer lizard down. He took a total of 94 hp damage!

The only lizards left are in flight. The pilot moves the flying craft 200 feet toward the baying of the hounds. Lizard 1 runs another 120 ft. Lizard 2 stands up and moves 30 feet away, clearly trying to escape.

OOC: I almost forgot! I'll be on vacation all next week, leaving Sun and returning the next Mon. I will have access to my parent's computer so I should be able to post, but if I don't make it in time, go ahead and play Alexi for me.

Maybe Buz can since he knows Alexi best. Thanks.
Jonathan

OOC: BTW, how did the wooden craft fare with the Alchemist Fire? Did any portion of it, canvas, ropes, or whatever catch fire? Fire would have been burning on it for two rounds, is it enough to catch wood, rope, canvas on fire?
Inquiring Minds need to know.

IC: If Lobo had been Bantom, he surely would have said something to Alexi, like 'Serves you right! You belong in the saddle, not flying around'.

Anyway, no time to loose. Alexi, straight down, finds his lance laying next to him. He grabs it up and mounts Lobo. (Since he's prone already, grabbing his lance and then standing up should be only 1 Move action, right?)

Fast Mount DC20: d20+14 - 5 (Arm chp) forgot this last time = 26! Now I get good rolls!

Alexi has recoverd rather quickly from his embarasing plop and with one swift move grabs up his lance and mounts Lobo.

A quick glance reveals two of the four Lizards down and knowing the others now can handle themselves, charges after the one running away.

Spur Mount DC15: d20+14 = 23, Lobo takes 1hp dmg for an extra 10' move

Lobo moves 45' towards the fleeing lizard.

Zeph AC26 HP 42/42 (shield)
Saturday October 16th, 2010 12:21:26 AM

(OOC: Yeah, Kathy almost never misses a post)

Zeph looks at the lizard machine as it flies away with all the intel on the adventurers.

"Well, I guess that means our hats of disguise are freaking useless now. Perhaps I shoulda tried climbing up there instead of screwing around with these pathetic archers." Zeph says, rather defeated.

Jet Stormway (AC: 22/21/no dex, HP: 8/53)  d20+11=18 ;
Saturday October 16th, 2010 1:08:25 PM

Jet looks at the lizard attempting to escape, "Take another step and I will see you dead before you hounds arrive. Drop you weapons and gear."

Jet walks up to him if he surrenders and tells him plainly, "Your people are invaders. You have killed my friends and destroyed the lives of many. For this, we will continue to kill your leaders and torment your very existance in this land. Take this message back to your people. They can leave the home of Bryn Baraz and stop aggression toward us and the Ahote. In return, I will speak to the mines owners, one of which is here and see if you can't purchase your needs at a fair price. If they will not negotiate these terms with us, then as long as there are heros willing to come here, you will have a war with us. If you value your animals, you better call them off. I hate killing innocent creatures."

Jet then points to the direction of the hounds, motioning for him to run that direction.

At the top of his lungs, Jet calls Alexi and anyone else to return to the scene where Jet begins to loot the bodies and introduces himself to the newcomers, before mounting Vaya and riding off in a completely different direction then before. "Greetings, I am Jet. Mount up with me and let us get out of here before we have several fliers returning."

On the other hand...

If the creature does not surrender, Jet still bloody, makes a move and attempts to chop into the lizard with hate.

Jet misses with an 18.

Galin HP 58/58 AC 17  d100=48 ; d20=1 ;
Sunday October 17th, 2010 7:23:54 PM

Now that he has a second to catch his breath Galin sheaths his rapier and swears like a sailer for a few moments and then goes quite. He is not sure how to react to the group so he will wait off to the side. He will make sure that no one is behind him and that there is also somewhere to run ( looking around the clearing all the time)

Garret Goodbarrel [AC:26 HP:33/33]  d20+10=16 ;
Monday October 18th, 2010 1:43:41 AM

Garret takes another look at the pilot and slings another stone at the fleeing craft. Unfortunately, he estimates wrong, and the stone strikes the base of the craft, not the driver.

DM Cayzle - Mopping up
Monday October 18th, 2010 7:19:37 AM

There were total four thruls and one kothrul, the pilot. The four thruls included the officer (dead), a crossbower (dead), a crossbower (180 ft away and into the grasses), and a crossbower (30 ft away).

Garret slings a stone at the flying craft, but it is useless. Alexi and Zeph express regrets.

This last thrul drops his crossbow and is approached by Jet, who gives him a message. [OOC Question: Are you still looking like a thrul, or do you drop the disguise in front of him?]

Galin swears a blue streak and waits to see what will happen.

The last thrul shouts, "I'll tell them!" to Jet, and runs off.

You are alone in a meadow in the scrublands a few miles from Bryn Baraz.

Keela  d4+1=4 ; d4+1=3 ;
Monday October 18th, 2010 1:13:16 PM

[OOC: sorry for not posting.]

Keela shakes off her stupor and uses her wand to send a Magic Missile after the driver.

[4 damage to the driver.]

Also, if the DM will indulge me, Keela would have sent a Magic Missile last round, too. That one would have done 3 damage, if allowed.

Jet Stormway (AC: 22/21/no dex, HP: 8/53)  d8=2 ; d8+4=11 ;
Monday October 18th, 2010 2:44:04 PM

ooc: Jet will not drop his disguise. Let them believe there are more heros out here fighting against them, than just this group. If they split up their forces looking for two or more groups, we will have a better chance of defending against them.

When Jet collects the leaders sword, does it effect him in some way?

Jet tells the group, We need to do something quickly, but we do not want to lead them right to where we are going, if we are to try to use the old druids sancutuary as an outpost, they can easily follow our horses trails from here, to there. I'm afraid our best bet will be, we have to go underground. I know the horses will not like it, but with all of us aiding the best person that can handle animals, it will go quickly."

Jet casts a Cure Moderate Wounds on himself, sacrificing his Enthrall spell restoring 13 hit points.

Galin HP 58/58 AC 17
Monday October 18th, 2010 4:20:53 PM

Galin will walk a bit from the main group and sit on the ground and catch his breath. Seeing that the party is not attacking him he is sure that they are friendy if not friends. He will then quicky check himself for and damage, seeing none he will walk over to the group and say I do not know who you are but thank you for my life I am not sure what I would have done if I did not run into you. Who are you? Where are you going? I have lost my mate she is still in the area can you please help me find her before the lizards do? We were separated a ways back there points to where he came from please it means her death if they find her.

he will wait for the reply

Garret Goodbarrel [AC:26 HP:33/33]
Monday October 18th, 2010 4:57:33 PM

When Galin speaks, Garret looks over and replies, "Hello there, good fellow! My name is Garret Goodbarrel, and our little group here is headed towards Bryn Baraz. We hear there's trouble there, and we're headed to help out."

As Galin mentions his mate, Garret looks out to the woods where he hears the baying of the hounds. "Galin, would you know anything about the group following you on the ground? If there's a smaller number of them, we could set up an ambush and take care of them when they come looking for us. I don't know if the one Jet scared away will encourage them or send them back to more reinforcements."

Zeph AC26 HP 42/42 (shield)
Monday October 18th, 2010 6:44:24 PM

Zeph is visibly concerned about Galin's mate. "The less innocent blood spill the better, and the more guilty blood on my chain, the happier I am."

Then Zeph thinks about Jet's decision to let that one go, "Well, The flier got away, so letting that guy go with a message couldn't hurt. But think about it: if you are a superpower on a floating city with a standing army, how would you react to the threats of seven humanoids?" Zeph pauses to let the gravity of the situation set it.

"They will hunt us too now until we are dead. So Jet may be right- underground it will be harder to track us. So I agree that after we locate Galin's mate, we hide and see what we can do to usurp their hold on the City, starting with the mines." Zeph says, knowing that if they do not kill the lizards, then they will kill them.

Alexi (AC: 22/11, HP:42(4)/58) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:36/37)  d20+1=13 ;
Monday October 18th, 2010 7:03:20 PM

OOC: Alexi is already hot in pursuit of the one 180' away (135' away from Alexi). I don't know if Alexi will hear Jet.

Listen d20+1 = 13
I don't know what DC I need for being on a horse pounding through the grasses moving away from the Jet...

But since Jet says 'at the top of his lungs' I presume a 13 is high enough.

IC: Alexi hears Jet calling him back and he reins Lobo in to a halt. Unsure why Jet has called him off, he loiters around the area, watching for the escaped lizard and listening to the approaching baying of 'hounds'.

Charek AC 25; HP 47/47
Monday October 18th, 2010 11:21:31 PM

Cleaning his axe, Charek makes his way back over to where he dropped his crossbow and picks it up.

"I say we kill more lizards. That should loosen their hold a bit on the mines and the city....."

Galin HP 58/58 AC 17
Tuesday October 19th, 2010 4:08:31 PM

With a grumbling belly Galin asks while they are still talking Do any of you have some food to spare I am starving and have not eaten in some time??

Garret Goodbarrel [AC:26 HP:33/33]
Tuesday October 19th, 2010 5:06:31 PM

Garret replies, "Food? Ah, but if there were time to eat! I fear that those baying hounds will be here in mere minutes. I'm wondering if you know what we might be up against so we can decide how and where to fight before we find your mate. Then, once underground, we shall feast!"

Galin HP 58/58 AC 17
Tuesday October 19th, 2010 5:36:59 PM

Galin reply's Yes food I am starved and eaten little in days I am called Galin.... Galin Burfoot and you are up against way more then you think you are up against. I wish to find my mate and leave this place forever, and kill anything lizard or otherwise that tries to stop me" I have no wish to return to the mines that you speak of, it a death sentence. There resources are vast and numbers many, you may win a battle or too here but unless you have a army that I can not see I don't see you destroying the lizards before they swarm you all and kill you slowly. I have been a slave since birth and I tell you that unless the gods are on your side going up against these creatures you are nothing but there next meal he pauses for a moment and then continues What are your plans ???? Why are you here???? and Who are you ???

Zeph AC26 HP 42/42 (shield)
Tuesday October 19th, 2010 8:12:11 PM

Zeph laughs when Galin mentions the gods. "See, funny thing is, some gods are on our side, but the Lizards have their own set of gods on theirs, so I'll call the fight pretty even. Even we have the assistance of the Star Mage's guild in New Elennia. They may swarm us and kill us slowly... or quickly. But we are on their radar, so running away may only be an option if we can get far, FAR away. Our plan is to usurp their hold on Bryn Baraz and basically harass them until we make staying in the city simply too costly and hopefully they move on. A negotiation is possible too, but unlikely." Zeph says, handing Galin a piece of dried jerky.

Then Zeph looks for a bush to hide in, "How long until the hounds arrive?" he says with a smile on his face.

ooc: Jon, when is Crystal going to join us? If she can start, she can likely just pop up next to us, but I don't think we should waste the characters time right now, looking for her character, if she can't play yet. We really need to get our characters to a safe location.

Garret, I do not understand your post. You imply that you need information before you decide, but then state we are going underground anyway. I am a bit confused as to what you want to do. We don't have time right now to talk about what we need to do. If you don't tell us after Cayzle posts, where we should go, Jet is going to get on his horse and do what he thinks is best. If anyone wants to follow him after that, he will let them, but we need a decision now! Please start leading us or give the reins to someone else, anyone else. Jet has even followed Keela before, when we were dealing with the dwarves of Bryn Baraz, so as long as we got someone willing, Jet will continue to follow, but we are wasting way to much time when we don't have it.

OOC Not sure when she can start but I was just working some RP into my text Cayzle can write her in at any point ..... Its more that of a role-play if you lost your mate you would ask to find her to ... but I would not wait around for her to just pop up in the field we need to move.

I don't think we want to be here soon

Galin HP 58/58 AC 17

Galin replys to Zeph the only thing i want to negotiate with a lizard is where to bury them as he eats what is given and devourer it in moments thank you friend finishing what is in his mouth The reptiles will not be happy that you attacked them and will be here in force soon I am sure you guys need to move to a safer area sooner then later or become dinner.. may I accompany you until a safer place is found and I can get some equipment that I sorely lack.

DM Cayzle - The flying craft is forced down
Wednesday October 20th, 2010 10:01:25 AM

Last Round: Keela managed to get a magic missile at the pilot. Jet picks up the officer's sword, which is inert in his hands.

Jet calls to Alexi and suggests heading underground. However, the last time you did that, you cast Water Breathing on the horses. Lacking that capability now, what will you do? Getting the mounts to swim underwater would not be easy. Anyone have maxed ranks in Handle Animal?

Jet also casts a cure.

Galin says he is hungry for food and to find his lost wife.

Garret introduces himself and promises Galin some food as soon as it is safe. He asks Galin about the creatures making the baying sounds.

Zeph thinks that heading underground is a good idea.

Galin introduces himself and warns that the strength of the lizards is extreme, and he only wants to escape. He has some basic questions, too.

Zeph hands Galin some rations and explains the plan: To harry and raid, driving up the cost of the mine takeover and hopefully force the lizards to leave. Maybe there can be negotiation; more likely there will be death.

Alexi rides back. He keeps alert.

The unwounded Charek is in favor of more combat.

Meanwhile, Keela is taking aim for one last parting shot with a magic missile. At the outermost limits of the spell's range, she fires off an arcane dart. Although none of you can sdee the effect, in fact, it brings the pilot to exactly zero hp. With his last action before lapsing into unconsciousness, he sets the craft to descend at a safe angle to the ground.

You see the flying craft enter a gradual descent. Your intuition is that if you chased after it on horseback at a rate of 40 or 50, you and the hunters with the baying hound-lizards would likely get to the landing site at about the same time. But you have to act now, immediately, if you are to even have that chance.

OOC: i'm a bit puzzled at why we left two lizards alive. I thought the whole idea was to make sure none managed to return to their city, or Bryn Baraz and spoil our diguises.

Now we have the hounds AND two lizards to deal with.

Zeph, not that it makes a whole lot of difference, no one here knows what "RADAR" is. It could stand for 'Rapid Advance Dwarven Artillery Regiment'.

IC: Alexi returns to the battle sight and sees Keela sending out more magical missiles. WIth a loud 'WHOOOP' he spurs Lobo towards the descending craft. "Keela done it again!" he shouts as he gallops by.

Move 35', Spur mount +10' / round, Run = x3 Move
Spur DC15 d20+14= 20 Lobo takes 1hp

OOC: I'm at my parents' home and don't have the books, so Cyzle, calculate the distance for me with Lobo in a Run w/ base move 35' and an additional 10' for Spur for the first round and just a Run for how many more rounds it takes to reach it.

Since the Spur damage goes up exponentially, Alexi will only Spur Lobo this first round of the chase.

This will be Alexi's Move until reaching the craft.

Wednesday October 20th, 2010 12:43:04 PM

ooc: Well, it is not exactly heroic killing something trying to run away from you. Plus, I thought the pilot was going to get away, since he was over 200 feet away at that point and I didn't see anyone else using their crossbow on him. Yes, of course, the mage pulls it out once again and look, she is still standing after a battle!

Zeph AC26 HP 42/42 (shield)
Wednesday October 20th, 2010 1:03:05 PM

When Zeph sees the pilot go down, he says, "Well, maybe we should catch up to the escaped Lizards and kill them to mask our presence then."

Zeph will hop on his horse, Shadow III, and ride to kill one of the escaped Lizards. Movement for Light Warhorse is 60right? So, ima gunna make this guy run hard to catch up. Run speed is x4 for horses too? Bah, it shouldnt take more than a round or two.

But yeah, I'm with Jet, letting them go when we thought the pilot got away anyways is a moot point, but letting them go when the pilot is down is a fool's gambit.

Just so everyone knows, Zeph's idea is a simple war of attrition with guerrilla tactics and asymmetrical warfare: make staying in Bryn Baraz more costly than leaving. The first objective should be to free the slaves and cause a riot in the mines themselves. The ensuing chaos will give us a firm footing to strike at the leaders present in the city. That could cause one of two things: 1. Give up. 2. Or they could attack in full force - in which we would probably run, hide, and continue to harass them with a small halfling slave army... or send the slaves the same way we sent the dwarves.
