(ooc: My son is out of the hospital, and doing well. The Wold site is back too!)
While Appolo waits for something to happen he notices a hole form in the side of the stone block then out comes Vauhwyt followed by relieved looking Goodwin, the Fisher family and the unicorn. Vauhwyt share her personal thoughts with Appolo.
Arriving with impeccable timing, Aztyr joins the others and sees if they are ready to teleport. (ooc: For a teleport since Champ is a non-combatant animal someone can pick him up can carrying him via a teleport as long a they don't exceed their weight limit.)
Feeling Vauhwyt flicker in and out of the prime-material plane, causes Malgant some concern for the others, but he still takes time to shake the dust from his hooves before leaving. The whole group being banned for thieving is harsh, but the unicorn's freedom is well worth the price.
The drow druid Dur and the five harpy youngster are missing without a trace.
You still have the band of Giant's to check out. The group can check on them without going near the small town of Adurath.
There is also the unfinished Stronghold, Vauhwyt had plans which called for 9 days total of spell casting and stone shapes, but that was with Dur's help. (ooc: Cayzle, how many more days to you estimate you need to finish it?)
Goodwin takes Vauhwyt aside to speak with her quietly "I feel bad that my work with the girls has been introduced, and worried for what become of the harpy kids they were making such good progress. Unless I can complete the work for them, I don't feel right getting paid. "

I'm not sure if you all realize it, but teleporting is not limited by weight but by the numbers of souls teleported. It's strange, but appearently peoples souls seem to have weight, and the larger the person, the more thier soul weighs. All gather around me here and we'll head for the encampment." As they all gather and then they hold onto her harness, she concentraits and they wink out of existance at the town and reapear at the edge of the woods, next to settlement Vaughyt had been working on for the past few days. Aztyr sees the family, Bard and the Unicorn, as well as Appolo and Vauhwyt, but the harpy chicks and the druid seem to be missing.

Vauhwyt gets right to the point. "Here's what I know happened. Dur the Druid said the site was under attack by air elementals. He put these good folks in a stone shelter that also conveniently hid all events from them. Then he took the girls and left."
"What I THINK happened is that Dur actually kidnapped the girls."
She pauses a moment to let that sink in.
"I'm assuming that's the case right now, though I'll keep an open mind when we find him. Maybe there was some enemy and he fled with the girls. But why not just all hide in the shelterr?" In her worry, the liontaur's accent thickens. "He will come to account for his behaviourr."
"So we need to find him. Here is what I hope we can do."
"Number one, you good folks do not deserve to be in dangerr," she says to the fisher family. "It breaks my heart, but you cannot stay herre, since I clearly cannot provide you with appropriate shelterr. Aztyr and I can teleport you to safety in Dirt City or elsewherre. Today or tomorrow, I suppose. I'm very sorry."
"Second, we need information. I will cast my Scrying spell to find Durr. That traitorr."
"Third, with the kindly help of good Malgant, maybe we can contact one of the girls with a Sending spell, and ask them what happened and where they arre."
Vauhwyt looks sadly at Malgant, then at all her friends. "I know that I have brought this emergency on us with my maybe too hastily sworn promise, my friends," she says gently. "Maybe I was wrong. It would not be the first time, as the Vengeful Lady recently reminded me. But I cannot tell you how much your help means to me. Thanks."
When Godwin offers her a refund, however, she smiles and brightens up. "Oh no, my good troudadourr! I have not yet given up! We may have them back -- maybe by nightfall. If I scry them and then we teleport to them, it could all be over very fast."

I prayed for prayers of building. So, I cannot contact the 'girls'.I don't know this Dur person so I cannot help you scry. I don't have any items so I cannot help yo divine. Really I am a big armored guy with nothing to do at the moment. If you find them and take me along I can help provide security, but that is pretty much all I am able to help with today."

Vauhwyt grins and thanks Mal. "You folks who have to choose spells each morning suffer so much!" she says consolingly. "It's okay. If I can't scry them, we'll try tomorrow."
First she looks for some physical connection to the druid. He has often been an owl. She'll take a twig or branch from his favorite perch. She'll look for some owly furball he may have coughed up. She asks Godwin for help -- maybe there is a bowl he drank out of, a stone he sat on, something. Just before she casts her scrying, she'll have Mookie in monkey form use a scroll of minor image to make an image of Dur, with an owl on his shoulder which is what he looks like in owl form.
She DOES try the scry. Her base save DC is 17 (it varies, see scrying spell), and she will try it four times if he makes his saves.

Aztyr transports the heavy and light souls of her companions to the unfinished stronghold. Where they learn of the missing druid and fledglings. Vauhwyt lays out some plans.
Malgant informs Vauhwyt, that he isn't prepared to scry or divined today, just build.
Appolo offer support to Vauhwyt for doing good by the girls.
Valanthe and Vorelle can't offer much help in tracking the druid or girls.
Trying to Scry Dur, Vauhwyt finds a bit of Owl feather on a favored perch and Mookie's image helps her focus, but each time Vauhwyt tires to Scry Dur she perceives nothing.

Aztyr listens as Vauhwyt gets more worried over the fledgelings and finalily asks, "Vauhwyt, I assume you have at least one feather from the young? Tell me which one and give me the feather. I'll need at least an hour to see what I can find." After she get's the feather, Aztyr retreats just a bit away from the others and pulls out her big mirror. She starts her spell and let's her mind's eye wander and sweep as it will, before it tries to come into focus and show it'self in the mirror after the hour is up. (Assuming the feather is given, the harpy will have a -10 to her Will save. using the firsthand knowledge bonus of 0)
She waits as the picture comes into view. (insert DM discription here)

The group offer several suggestions. Finally Aztyr tires to scry upon one of the fledglings, there are feathers a plenty around, but when the spell is cast the liontaur also perceives nothing.

Seeing the group attempt to find Dur or the girls has left them at a lost, Goodwin the Troubadour coughs as way of getting attention, "Err pardon for me to say so, but Dur can't hide himself and the girls from your spells forever, you just have to keep trying longer than he or whoever keeps the block up. The question is will any harm come to the girls in that time? If Dur did arrange the elemental attack to get us out of the way and make off with the fledglings, I would have to point out that no one was injured, and I'm sure the unicorn would have felt any evil intentions on his part. No, I think Dur truly cared for animals and these creatures probably more so than civilized people."
The Troubador shrugs before continuing "While I wasn't here when Dur showed up, It seems convenient he showed up when he did. Didn't you also tell me the Harpy mothers had some sort of deal with that mad Bone man that involved the fledglings? Do you think it's possible he may have had someone watching over his investment with the Harpies? Anyway, if you are willing to pay the price there are seers, diviners, outsiders and/or wizards that may be able to find where Dur and the Girls are even with the blocks."

So now the chance to help the refugees is pretty much out unless we want to start receiving periodic visits from his minions and we will need to step up any plans to go see him." Malgant begins to pace on the beach. His armored hooves tossing sand into the air as his logical mind works through what he will need to do to resolve this before someone gets killed. " Come morning I will beseech Imod for the wisdom to question the girls AT LENGTH about where they are and how we can find them. Likely this will lead to some risky teleportation. You say that they can be taught to be good. Goodwin believes this and says he has seen it working. I remain practically skeptical but want to believe it too. If they are still outside the mountain we have a chance of rescuing them. If they are inside I have no doubt we can still rescue them, but I fear that we will have deaths while doing so. Facing eight of those liche warriors on neutral ground was hard. In the mountain we would face innumerable amounts of them on their home turf with their creator behind them. Pray to your Gods tonight we can catch them outside. Think hard on this tonight. In the morning I will need the name and description of the fledgling that is most observant and down to earth. Remember, I saw them once when their savage little forms first hatched and were trying to eat Ellen, Jack and Jill. I have little other knowledge of them. " Malgant walks away to go prepare a meal and meditate on what he will need to be able to find and rescue the girls. Inwardly he really does hope they can be taught to be good. He also hopes silently for the chance to fight those liche warriors again, on better terms.

"But if it is Mr. Mt.Bone who is behind this, he will regret it." She gets a fiery look in her eyes, but her voice is calm.
Vauhwyt thanks Vorelle for her vigilance and sleeps the night through. "Remember to sing while you are on watch," she adds.

Not having optimal spells for the task at hand, the group is forced to wait until morning. Goodwin and the Fisher family wonder what they should do, if the group is abandoning the unfinished stronghold their isn't much use of them building stuff. If nothing else they put out a few lines to catch a few fresh fish for dinner.
(ooc: Making a Foray into Mr Mt.Bone territory is a significant departure from the current module. Which isn't a problem, except it will take a few days to outline something. There seems to be a lot of interest in the group taking that path! Is that want you all want? {BTW, I didn't write the current, so I don't mind table-ling it.})

We thought we could count on you to tell us that Mt Bone might be involved even if it wasn't likely. The concern over us risking our lives to save these monsters is really worth only a shrug to you? In the morning I will try and contact your girls. If I succeed we can discuss what comes next. If I don't I will be back to helping the people of this area stand up to those that oppress them. " Malgant turns and walks down the beach, leaving the area a bit so that he doesn't say something he will regret. He hates being this close to the forest and it's unpredictable nature. Furthermore he hates to think that Vauhwyt could value their lives so cheaply as to not even show concern over keeping the possible involvement of Mount Bone from the group.

OOC As far as Mount Bone goes we would only be going there NOW if that's where the chicks are. To be realistic though you can't expect someone with a vested interest like Vauhwyt to just shrug and say "Well, the kids are missing, there are no leads... but I hear there are these giants..." that would make almost no sense. Mount Bone was a target for after the current module unless we are pointed there now by these events.

I can and will transport you to the Inn where the other families were taken, and can get you transport to a safer place to call home. It will need to be this evening that I take you, I am afraid I will most likely need all of my arcane talents come tommorow. Let's eat, and I'll take you before we encamp for the night." After dinner is eaten, Aztyr will teleport to the Acid Inn and back before the group camps for the night.

Malgants sleep is fitful and not refreshing. Fear of the forest a few feet away and doubt as to his next course of action combine to make the night long and miserable. He awakens and goes through his morning rituals, bathing and then praying. He asks Imod for informational prayers to try and find the girls. Once Vauhwyt identifies which girl to contact, Malgant goes to work, sending a message to the harpy." I am a friend of your mother's. She is worried about you. Describe where you are so that I can find you. Speak to me." He waits for the reply.

Vauhwyt is obviously impatient waiting for Malgant's to share the results of his spell.

OOC you might think the priest with the wisdom and all would have sense motive as a skill.....sadly, I get 2 skill points per level...so this is unskilled. IC Malgant tries to read the response he gets from the harpy. ( sense motive 17) They knew that the group had killed the real Harpy mothers already, didn't they. Vauhwyt had a long conversation with the dead Harpy while Aztyr and I were chasing the leader down. Maybe there was something about who the chicks would consider 'mother' in that conversation. Vauhwyt had never said but had taken the responsibility on herself. I wonder... Malgant goes to his waiting friends and repeats the words from the harpy, word for word, with as much emotion as he can remember them having when he received them. He then waits to see if the others want him to send some more. He can send three more messages today he states.

Not having gotten much from the first sending, Malgant shares what he learns. He can tell the reply was cut sort due to the spell's limitations which the harpy was oblivious to.
Aztyr points out that they did learn Dur is working with a Mage and that he told them a difficult truth which may test the fledglings trust in everyone.
Feeling sad and at a loss, Vauhwyt tries to explain in abstention her motives and actions leading to adoption.
On the bright side the group has managed to make contact with one of the fledglings.

The group continues to discuss what they should do, given the turn of events. Malgant reminds them of the refugees. Appolo want to find the chicks and Dul, but also offers bloody campaign, with looting and pillaging temples.
Aztyr points out that even if they rescue the chicks would they still accept the group?
Suggesting the gods hands at work, Valanthe adds the druid to her list. Malgant questions what the group is going to do now that the damage is done.
Agreeing that they gods have tuned from them, Vauhwyt wonders is everyone including Mookie would be better off if they were keep away.
The unicorn having remained silent until now speaks up "Vauhwyt, be not of heavy hart! You and your friends have done much good! You have helped refugees find new homes, Saved a mother and two children, Your friends saved me from a terrible fate. Your goodness has given the harpy fledglings a chance to chose good where they would have had none at all. If you had not tired, they would be dead or worse. You have planted a seed, who knows what will become of it? The question is if you rescue them, then what? And if you don't rescue them, what will become of them? Arriving in Acid City, Malgant listens to Aztyr's question and replies." I am not sure. I think I am a bit short of what I need to make my sword the bane of the undead. Come with me to the catacombs and I will find out how much I need. I should be close to the right amount." Watching for Ga'alian priests and avoiding their notice(hopefully) he speaks to Rufus and Sally. He informs them that some of those they are charged with defending have been taken prisoner and they need to perform a rescue. If the priests of Ga'al should become aggressive toward them they have the token he gave them and they should use it to summon him for help. He knows that could put him in a bad situation and his friends in a worse one but he has committed himself to defending them if their support of the refugees lands them in trouble and he means to honor that commitment. After speaking to them he plans to head for the catacombs.

Vauhwyt has put in a ticket to buy two scrolls of sending. She plans to talk to her fledglings herself. Yes, Mal can do it, but it is not the same. She has to talk to them herself.
But before she does so, she has to decide for herself how advanced the girls are. What is the human-equivalent age of their emotional and intellectual development? Are they more like five-year-olds? Ten-year-olds? Fifteen-year-olds? She has to decide for herself whether they are able to make good decisions for themselves. Are they capable of deciding for themselves whether or not they want to be rescued? They are only [so far as I can figure] a few weeks old, for Lem's sake.
If they really are capable of making decisions, she plans to use the sending to ask if they want to be rescued. If they are not, then she plans to use the sending to try to counter the wizard's propaganda and get a clue as to where they are.

Also, Vauhwyt needs to train at the WLA. That's two days she needs to spend here at the WLA before she levels. But the fledgelings take priority over the training. So she has not leveled yet.
Timeline:
Day 1, night: Blip to fight the Zookeeper. Fledglings are abducted. Vauhwyt spends night away from camp.
Day 2: V returns, finds fledglings gone. Tries to scry the druid, fails. Aztyr tries to scry fledglings, fails.
Day 3, morning: Mal Sends to fledglings. V teleports to Plat City, buys scrolls. Will use them to cast Sending later today. Girls have been gone about 36 hours.

Thinking about the chick's development over such a short time, Vauhwyt estimates they when from the equivalent human development of about 3 years to some where of about 7 years. The rate seemed fast even for a humanoid monster, but it was slowing down over time. The group & Goodwin estimate that fledgling's pre-teen development will take a while longer several months? Then equivalent teen age development stage for several more months. At least a year or two before full adult hood stage in normal harpies. It could be that part of the harpy deal with the wizard involved accelerated growth?

After her trip to the Catacombs, Vauhwyt visits both the Temple of Gargul and the Plateau City branch of the WLA. She asks for some help. Can either of these places help her find someone to cast a Discern Location spell? How soon? At what cost? The PHB says that hiring someone to cast an 8th level spell would cost 80 gp per caster level, so 80x15= 1200 gp.

The group splits up to run their errands and do shopping, Vauhwyt works on finding the kidnapped girls. The temple of Gargul is most helpful in finding someone who can cast Discern Location for a small standard donation 1200gp should be sufficient, but they won't be prepared to cast it until the following morning. The spell does require some item of the the creature. You have feathers from the fleglings and from Dul, which are you going to use?
For those not shopping the time slips by slowly waiting for the harpy checks to be located, and a plan of action to take place.

The next few days are anxious ones for Vorelle. She feels a little stronger, and practices blending into the background.
But the thought of going to a big city--the biggest city!--scares her so much sometimes she shakes to think of it. She tries to think instead of the many wonders Plateau City is said to contain, but always her mind goes back to people. Hundreds of them--thousands of them--jostling and pushing and shouting impatiently.
"Maybe the people there are nicer than the people in Dirt City," she tells Champ, but she is not hopeful.

Day One: Vauhwyt and Appolo arrive back at Blackbird Cove. Fledglings discovered gone. Unicorn, Goodwin, Fishers freed from stone box. Malgant, Val, Vorelle, and Aztyr go to court and promise not to come back for a year. Vauhwyt and Aztyr try to scry Dul and Fledglings, with no luck.
Day Two: Malgant Sends to a fledgling. Vauwhyt teleports to Plat City with Goodwin and Appolo, visits Catacombs, Arranges for Sending to be cast at Temple of Gargul on Day Three. Vauhwyt trains at WLA. Aztyr teleport Fishers, Mal, Vorelle, and Val to Acid City. Mal and Aztyr visit the Catacombs via the branch office in Acid City. Mal Sends to Vauhwyt. Vauhwyt Sends to fledglings.
Day Three: Vauhwyt finishes training at the WLA and levels. Goes with Appolo to the Temple, makes her donation, and finds out what happens with the Discern Location spell. Vauhwyt and Appolo teleport, and entire party regroups, in Acid City.

She has a suggestion for her friend, "Appolo, while I am training, why don't you go see if you can gather any information about the druid, Dul. Maybe someone in this town knows him, Maybe in the Druid's Quarter."
Since we are staying a night in Plateau City, Vauhwyt will arrange accommodations for herself and Appolo either at the WLA barracks or at an inn the WLA recommends.
She will also use a scroll to Send a message to one of the harpy fledglings. Note: She specifically paid for the arcane version so she would not have to worry about having to use UMD to emulate a 14 Wis and 7 levels of cleric. Out of armor, she has zero chance of error. She Sends: "It's Mama, who hatched you and raised you. I'll be there soon. Tell your sisters but no one else. I love you all so much."
Finally, that night, she seeks out some Avenger contacts, maybe among the clergy of Jancassis. Her untrained Gather Info roll to find that (wearing Mookie's circlet and after casting heroism) is a 14. Her untrained Know Religion check is a 22. Plus she is a 5th level Avenger. If she finds anyone, she gives the secret handshake and password and explains her need for revenge on the kidnappers of her babies. She wants to buy some sacred poison -- the kind to which an avenger is completely immune. The best would be Large Scorpion Venom. She would like to buy four doses at 200 gp each, and four masterwork daggers to envenom, at 300 gp each, spending just over 2,000 gp total on this.
After two days of training, it is time to visit the temple and get the location of her girls.

Malgant and Val spend what time they can together before the pending battle.
Aztyr spend her time lounging around waiting for Vauhwyt to come up with the details of where and when.
Vauhwyt process to get some training at the WLA as the process of information gathers takes time. While Vauhwyt's sending didn't ask anything the young one chats back "Dul and the nice wizard says we shouldn't talk to the voices. Dul says after the wizard does his magic no one will be.". Vauhwyt's night time meeting with Avenger Contracts proves fruitful and she is able to obtain the poison and daggers. When the time comes for the temple priest to cast the powerful location magic, the results are not encouraging a place on a lesser mountain peak to the north west of the Mount Bones in Izen. Using that information and maps from WLA you pinpoint suspected stronghold of a subordinate to the Lord or Mount Bones. The WLA scouting account describes the entrance into the mountain quite well and in great detail in case someone wanted to teleport there. Basically a large cavern opening which ends in six smaller caves. Two scouts send into the smaller caves didn't return.
Gathering information at Vauhwyt's request, Appolo makes a heroic effort finding only scant information about Dul the Druid. A reclusive druid who belongs to a circle that believes strongly in maintaining the natural order of nature and more importantly that the loss of less civilized creatures to the growing civilizations must be halted. There isn't much information to go on with the unknown wizard, but the general details is that it's not the Lord of Mount Bones you will be dealing with, but a valise magic user who dabbles in hybrid creatures. Both are powerful spell users.

Vauhwyt finishes her shopping at the catacombs, and then teleports with Appolo and Mookie to meet Mal, Val, Vorelle, and Aztyr. She shares all the info she has with her friends.
She goes into detail on two tactics with which she wants everyone to be familiar, after double checking her Detect Scrying is in place and there are no prying ears or eyes aroundabouts.
The first is her new Antimagic Field spell, which she intends to use mostly as a personal shield. However, while it is in effect, anyone standing right next to her will be affected. She describes how she expects to cast the spell mostly on Mookie, which means that by positioning himself between two taurs, the field could cover both completely. She encourages everyone to try it out with her tonight so no one is taken by surprise.
The other strategy is to take everybody -- the whole party -- into the Realm of Shadows as a way of short-cutting the trip in and/or making a fast get-away. It takes a special concentration skill check, and she can bring 6 people into the Realm if she takes 10 on the check, or 11 people by taking 20, which she can once per day as a standard action. Being in the Realm of Shadows is like being ethereal, and we can take run actions to travel at speed, essentially through walls and other barriers. We can also look into the Wold from the Realm of Shadows, though the Wold looks grey and shadowy from the Realm. The disadvantage is that those with the grim must make a Will save vs DC 20 or take 1d6 points of temporary Con damage as they enter the Realm of Shadows.
So here are some options for us:
(1) Buff up, including Locate and Scry spells. Teleport to the location we have obtained.
(2a) Hide and Go Seek: Set up a hidden camp (Rope Trickery? Illusion? Walls of Stone?) and use it as a base from which to get more info. (2b) Smash and Grab: From there, we either fight our way in or shadow in, and improvise from there. Maybe fight and win, maybe grab the girls and run, fighting or shadowing out. (2c) Siege, Stealth, and Speak: Or use Walls of Stone to seal the caves, set a siege, send in a few scouts (via shadow or sneakery) to spy or grab the girls. Maybe negotiate.
(3) If we get the girls but not the druid, then Vauwhyt would like to go back for seconds. She has unfinished business with him.

When Aztyr mentions the Wall of Stone crashing down, she laughs. "A Wall of Stone has to be firmly anchored in existing rock to work. But Wall of Iron and Wall of Force both defeat the AM Field, so point well taken!"

Just before the teleport to the cave, she takes of her armor and casts Alter Self (Mookie to monkey form), False Life (+14 temp hp), Resist Energy (Fire), Resist Energy (Cold), Resist Energy (Electricity), Heroism, and Greater Magic Weapon (armor spikes). She also casts Heroism and a Resist Energy of a type of their choice to both Aztyr and Val. Then she puts her armor back on and casts Reduce Person and Expeditious Retreat. Spell Fail chances: 55 and 50, no problem.

Aside from the already cast Status spell Malgant, never one to buff others before a fight, had nothing to add. From Mathilda's stand he adds Protection from energy lightning to Val and Spell immunity to Hold person, lightning bolt, and magic missile to Val as well, covering some of the protections the others have cast on themselves on Val. Before they leave he embraces Val and kisses her, hoping to see her backk safely in a few moments. While she is gone he concentrates fiercely on the status spell, watching to detect if they are in danger.
OOC I was looking at Shield other, but if we move out of range of each other the spell ends so that won't work.

Coming up with a plan to recon the strong hold, the prep spells are cast then Vauhwyt teleports with Aztyr and Valanthe.
The location teleported to is just outside the mouth of a large cavern on the side of a desolate mountain, The dry wind buffets your group. The mountain you are one forms a minor peak compared with the dominating peak of Mount Bones many miles to the southeast.
Aztyr with Valanthe as a guard, starts to study the spot for future teleporting a process that takes about an hour, to be more than a casual familiarity.
Meanwhile, Valanthe already invisible darkwalks in the Realm of Shadow, first thing she feels is a bone chilling evil desecration of the shadows as if it has been imbued with negative energy. Moving forward into the mountain the liontaur see the large entry cavern over a hundred feet across and fifty feet tall it is mostly of natural creation by some long ago volcanic process. At the back is an unnaturally soothed stone wall with six 5ft wide 10ft high tunnels leading deeper into the mountain. As get a closer look at the six tunnels they appear to be of similar construction with no identifying marks and all of them make sharp turns withing 30ft of the entrance. You feel the same desecration in the shadows as you did when you first entered them, but now you hear a baying howl of some creature living in the shadow realm. (Make a DC13 will save or become panicked) The howl is taken up by others more distance. Vauhwyt doesn't see anything in the shadows, but the panicking howl was somewhere withing a few hundred feet. (Do you head back? You've been scouting for about half a minute.)
Malgant through his status magic feels the trio flicker as they teleport there. He can feel Aztyr and Valanthe steady status, but Vauhwyt's connection vanishes within moments of them getting there indicating she left the plane or died.

Once Appolo has rejioned the others,he tells them everything he has discovered.It is clear he is angry and would like nothing better then to cut the druids head off. When Vauhwyt Aztyr and Valanthe head out on thier scouting trip,Appolo waita patiently for them to return.

Vauhwyt's skill check to bring herself and one other (Mookie) into the Realm of Shadows is automatic -- even on a nat 1, there's no problem. But Mookie has to make a DC20 Fort save to avoid the trauma of the transition, and his roll of 16 fails. He takes 3 points of Con damage.
Vauhwyt hears the spine-chilling howling, and rolls for that DC13 save vs panicking. She rolls a 16, and Mookie an 18, but Vauhwyt's roll is a natural 1, so it is a failure.
But wait! Vauhwyt is an Avenger, and per the Avenger rules, she is immune to fear entirely! "Whoa," she thinks to herself, after the tiniest moment of panic, "Way to get around a natural 1!"
Note that Vauhwyt, as a Grim, can see in the Realm of Shadows to a distance of 60 feet as a free action. And she can sense the direction and distance to any disembodied spirit or soul in 600 ft, even through material objects, if she takes a round to concentrate, which she does now.
She is trying to sense or see what could be making that sound, so here are two perception checks: A Spot of 3 and a Listen of 5 -- "LOL!" she thinks. "I guess I'm no Mata Hari!"
Vauhwyt has the intuition that the baying beasts are guards of some sort, and that she has been detected. She would like to see one before she goes, and maybe get a count of how many she thinks there are. She is still invisible, and they seem to be out of scent range, so she wonders how they found her. Maybe a long range See Invisibility?
Her sources said that this wizard dabbles in monster hybridization. Maybe he made these watchbeasts, and they are unlike all others.
Well, she has stuck around for a round to Sense Spirits. At the end of that round, Vauwhyt is inclined to get out. She'll take what she has learned and go home. She races back to the place she left Val and Aztyr and pop back into the Wold. Then she says, "time to go! I think I set off an alarm." And she teleports back to Acid City.

"I do not think that we should take any chance of dealing with creatures or guardians in that place. It felt so wrong. Very unsettling and I've seen some of the dark places in the world but that was something else. I do not know if what I heard was the bellow of a guardian or just something. I'm not sure I want to find out. Not without the right type of gear."

Can Vauwhyt tell if the locations of the spirits match the locations from which she heard the scary screaming attack?

"Not true, old friend," says Vauwhyt to Aztyr. "Use that See Invisible spell of yours to peer into the Realm of Shadows and detect them!"
She grins at Vorelle's idea. "I love it! I would love to set up a distraction and then really slip around to rescue the girls on the sly." She pauses to think. "We could teleport in. Take ten minutes to seal off the tunnels with Walls of Stone. Set up a defensive area with unshrunk items. Aztyr casts Private Sanctum near the entrance. Mal casts some Glyphs and Consecrate -- and a Deeper Darkness spell until Aztyr finishes casting the Private Sanctum. We appear to set up a siege, and there's no way to tell if we are really inside or not. If they come out to fight us, great, since we will have the defensive advantage."
"We can taunt the incorporeal undead and maybe they'll approach like they were going to before. Make sure everyone has Resist Fear who needs it. Tackle the incorporeal watchers as they approach and destroy them. I would love to grapple and crush a few, myself. If we are lucky, we kill all six early on, and then we can sneak through the Realm of Shadows to find the girls and bring them out of therre." Her accent reveals her excitement.
"If the wizard and druid emerge to fight, we can hide in the Darkness or in the Private Sanctum with an AM Field up until all the enemy's powerful spells are used up. If they throw corporeal undead at us, Mal can turn it and Vorelle and I can flanking sneak attack it or like that."
And if they run away, that's okay. We will have their home, which Mal can Hallow, and which we can search for info, and ransack or render inhospitable to them. No one wants to lose their home."
"And maybe they will negotiate. I mean, after all, why do they want the girls? Since we will come to fight, maybe the enemy would rather give them back to avoid a battle."

I cannot see in the dark, nor can many of the rest of us. Unless you mean to use your Anti magic field to negate part of the darkness. If so does it work that way or will it dispel it all? While diversions are nice, every prayer I spend on subterfuge is a heal you don't get or a smiting that never reaches the enemy. I am not the wisest member of the Heart of Imod. I have but a few of Imod's prayers at my command each day. I need to use them for the purpose of bringing those that oppose his will to heel, diversions are not so much a part of that, though a well planed diversion can be a general's strongest weapon. It is something I would need to weigh. While my presence and speech may be able to sometimes sway folk with words, I am also not Imod's most charismatic spokesman. My strongest ability to affect the undead has always been the sword at the end of my arm, not my use of Imod's power. I do thank you for the note of confidence though." "My last point is perhaps the most important though. If we make our presence known and appear to hold a position of strength there are a few undesirable actions that our foes can take. They can move the girls somewhere else, which is troublesome but fixable. Or they can kill them. I don't want to see that any more than you do now. OOC I assume we will keep talking about this for the end of the week and do our conversions to 3.75 Pathfinder on Monday and sort ourselves out before the charge of the Light Brigade? Others smell a nerf for clerics in this change. I will have to read the class a few more times. Aside from losing my heavy armor, which doesn't hurt me, I don't see the loss of power. But I may be blind. Some of our characters, like Val will become unrivaled killing machines though, and it may lend a new sense of security to those characters as to what we can accomplish here.

OOC: We begin converting out PC sheets to PathFinder on Monday, but we can take up to two months to learn the system ... games can start with Pathfinder as late as Jan 1. I think most games will take that long. I suggest we run this encounter in 3.5, myself.
Remember that in 3.5, Deeper Darkness just produces "shadowy illumination" and a 20% miss chance -- and we can still look out of it just fine! In PF, Darkness actually makes the area darker, and sight becomes a problem.
Vauhwyt says that fastest way to get the girls is to cast Locate Creature, then all go into the Realm of Shadows, fight any incorporeals, go to the girls' location, grab them, and teleport out. That remains an option but keep in mind the DC20 Will saves and 1d6 Con damage if you fail the save. She points out that she has six scrolls of Lesser Restoration. She also points out possible flaws in this plan, such as walls of force and forcecages that will stop dimensional travel, and especially that this is the plan the enemy is most likely to anticipate. Odds are the girls are located at the center of a trap.
By the way, Mookie took 3 pts Con damage on the last trip. Mal, if you have the Lesser Restoration spell prepped tonight, could you fix him up? If not, he can heal a point overnight and live fine two points down, since it does not affect his hit points.

Yes, there is the danger that he will kill the girls. But if he could use them just as easily dead, why kidnap them and go to such trouble to appear nice? I think he wants them alive and will not hurt them if he can use them as hostages. Vauhwyt's great fear is that he'll kill one just as a statement of strength, but that would surely hurt his effort to befriend the others.
I also think that that he will not anticipate us setting up a strong point on his doorstep, consecrating the ground, and so on. Keep in mind that he knows ALL about Vauhwyt thanks to the traitor druid, so he will anticipate fast moves, walls of stone, changes of shapes, teleports, and Mookie's talents. What he won't expect is the AntiMagic Field, since I just learned it. He also knows less about Vorelle, Val, Aztyr, and Mal. (Although who knows what info the Zookeeper has fed into the Evil Necromancer Monstrologer Gossip Network.)

Also, AM Field within the Darkness would be a neat trick, since it would not dispel or cancel the spell, just suppress a portion of it ... creating a "shell of darkness" outside the field (since the darkness has a 20 ft radius and the AM Field has a ten-ft radius, IIRC). This becomes a fast and easy way to create a sort of crappy Mage's Private Sanctum at a casting time of one round, not ten minutes, since you cannot scry into the darkness, and you cannot scry or detect into the AM Field. Add a wall of stone or unshrunken barrels filled with stones all around and you get a pretty sweet fast impromptu strong point, I say. Note that the Deeper Darkness, with its looong duration, would get cast before we teleport.
Vauhwyt has some sunrods, BTW, to give us light in the AM Field. Continual Flames won't work in there. But Cont Flames will extend beyond the darkness, illuminated the area outside the Darkness Shell and, if our DM is kind, may let us see outside the Shell even though enemies may not be able to see in? Or may only be able to see in dimly? Depends on your interpretation of Darkness, I guess.
Mal and Aztyr could take a five ft step out of the AM Field towards the rear of the strongpoint, away from the cave, and cast their Glyphs and Private Sanctums from there. Or cast from within the Field, since the Field just suppresses magic, not cancels it -- I'm not sure whether our DM would allow that or not, though.

(OOC Pathfinder -- We have two months to get characters converted. January 1 is the date where we start using Pathfinder rules to play. BTW, I'm planning for the harpy rescue to be completed near the end of this year. So we can start a new module when we switch to pathfinder.)
Vauhwyt was unable to judge the distance and direction of the howling accuracy enough to match it with any of the six spirits she sensed.
Malgant notes the six spirits and six tunnels, as Aztyr doubts her ability hurt spirits. Vauhwyt offers some advice and plans of action. Malgant counters some points and expresses a simpler more direct plan. Vauhwyt gives more options and arguments for plans.
(ooc: I've been reading up on Ethereal Plane vs Shadow Plane. To complicate the matter there is the Woldian Realms of Shadows which is like a nether world between the Living world and lands of rest which is what I think the Grim's class is referencing. Some of the Grim abilities lets them do things in the Shadow Realm as if Ethereal. )

OOC to DM Glenn: Highlight to display spoiler: {Yeah, my understanding is that the Wold actually does not have either an "Ethereal" or "Shadow" plane -- the Woldian "Realm of Shadows" takes the place of both. I've been playing for years now that when you Blink, you are Blinking in and out of the Realm of Shadows ... note that this page of advice on how to become a Grim says that you can reach the Realm of Shadows [in order to nail your shadow there] with Blink and Ethereal Jaunt.
