The clearing, really a flattening of the brush that borders the Culverwood and the cultivated parts of the valley seems to come to an end at a rocky outcropping. It is possible that the wolf came over the stones, which seem to be the remains of a long ago pasture border wall, the kind farmers make when they remove the rocks from a field. It looks like the wolf was a cagey customer and traveled along the wall before taking to the ground where its tracks were easy to follow. That the wolf did this makes you believe that it is well above the normal intelligence of a wolf. Perhaps it has been caught before and has learned how to conceal it's lair. Maybe it is a companion to the humanoid footprints found at the abduction site. All of these possibilities go through your mind as the trail disappears onto the wall.
Moxy has better luck. The bird finds a larger clearing where the plant monster seems to retreat to to digest it's meals. Other, older tacks lead off into the woods from this clearing. They all appear to have been made by the same creature, which is now just rotting vegetation.

Thar curses softly as he comes to the end of the wolf's track. However, he's not going to let some four legged animal outwit him, and he suggests to the party that it might be wise to go further past the rocky outcropping and use their combined abilities to find the wolf's tracks again. On the other hand, it might be worth searching around the plant monster's area and see if there are any clues nearby...

He'll go with whatever the group decides and track around either on the rocky outcropping or the monster's area..

After relating Moxy's findings to the group Falmar waits while the Wolf Trail is examined.

" IF we head to this plant's lair we may find some clue to who or what set it to ambush us. It seems to me it was there to discourage anyone heading this way through the forest. And it would seem that at one time the farms around here were much closer to the forest than they are now."

"Snafu is starting to wonder if this wolf and humanoid aren't one in the same" Snafu said in third person. "And Snafu also agrees that the plant is a great discourager from following the trail."

"It's a real win-win" Snafu said suddenly shifting back into first person. "Overgrown salad gets free meals and wolfie gets protection from being followed. Except there's no salad no more, so what do you say we go find wolfie, eh?"

Snafu keeps his senses on full alert as the study the trail and eventually, the plant's domain.

Yanosh agrees with Snafu, "Seems to me that Snafu is onto something. The wolf it is in my opinion." Yanosh reaches out and touches Snafu as he speaks a prayer to Gargul. Healing power pulses through him into Snafu.

Serillana waits patiently as the group talks about the wolf. As serillana can't really make left from right from the tracks, Serillana thinks to herself. "We better be careful of other forms of discouragement as well, say, in the form of traps? I guess I'll keep an eye out for anything that might suggest it."

Tishe' smiles at Snafu's antics, but nods in general agreement. "A wild beast seems less likely with every clue. Whether a companion or a druid herself, the wolf is wise about the woods."

"Yet, since we can't unravel the wolf tracks that aren't there anymore, let us follow Moxy to the plant's lair. We may spin out some treasure and more clues." She nods again at Seralina's comment. "And be wary of snares."

Tishe' sets up to organize the party in travelling again, with Thar and Snafu taking the lead.

Try as you might no amount of tracking can find any traces of the wolf's passage once it takes to the rocks, almost as if it were using the outcropping and the attached wall to hide which way it came from.
Following the path of destruction back from the Tendriculos you find a clearing larger than the spot where it ambushed you. Bones and other discarded items jut from the forest floor here and there. If the area were searched thoroughly, most of the valuables that ever survived passing through the beast's stomach could probably be found.

Falmar reluctantly removes a chunk of flesh from his pouch and give it to his companion who as usual is displaying a generally high degree of self satisfaction.
Yes, you did well, and you eat too much....

After a short bout of required ego stroking Falmar begins to poke around (search - 11) the Tendriculous lair in search of what he can find.
Well, it would be unfortunate, but we may stumble upon some of the missing town-folk here...and here I almost joined them

Following the trail back into the Culverwood, the troupe of Heroes finds the place where the plant monster spent the time digesting its meals. There are the cleaned bones of many animals here as well as more than one humanoid skull or skeleton. Among the debris, after a few hours of searching, therse things can be found.
3000 tarnished gold pieces scattered around the clearing
2 500 gp golden yellow topaz
an ornate gem encrusted scabbard made for a longsword 1400 gp value
a fire opal pendant on a gold chain value 1500 gp
To the trackers in the group it is clear that the wildlife in the area knew that the monster resided here and steered clear of it regularly.

After the group sifts through the vegetation and bones, Tishe' glides to earth and gets off her broom. "I was unable to see anything useful", she reports to the others, "and I'm running out of thoughts to thread into ideas. If there are no other mortal means of finding the kidnappers, I can always attempt a divination or to contact Sargrass. Whether otherwoldly senses would give us any answers that we could use..." The witch shrugs her shoulders, knowing very well the whims of the Powers are not hers to command, but to implore.

Thar helps collect the miscellaneous items they find, and once they gather together to decide upon a plan, agrees with Tishe's frustration. "I can't think of anything better either. I've followed all the tracks I could and they just stop at several places. We're going to need some magical help here to get an idea of the next step to take..." He steps back to hear the other's ideas and hopes that someone can find a way out of this quandary.

After his search is complete Falmar takes some time and attempts to bury the humanoid bones he can find. He says a quick informal (since there are no formal ones) prayer to Sargrass to help their souls find rest.

Turning to the gathered group he relates his thoughts.

I firmly believe that the Witches in town know more than they are saying. One of their hands are whiter than they appear. I say we head back and try to unravel what they know about the agreements with the Wood and what seems to have it warped. It's also getting late...

Having searched the clearing and buried what remains were found the Heroes return to the farm and gather their mounts. Heading back to Witchspawn they are met on the raod by 4 riders, 2 of the Fist's Bowmen and 2 of the swordsmen. They say they were dispatched when it started getting late and the group had not yet returned. The gates of Witchspawn are reached as dusk turns into night and their torchlit glow is a welcome sight. If sought out Blackhand can be found in the tavern of their hotel, drinking quietly with his men. He says the council knows of no breaches in the covenant, The wood would surely send an emissary before doing something like kidnapping. The council can be rounded up in the morning if the group wishes to speak to them further. Until then Blackhand invites the group to eat and share drinks on the tab of the Mailed Fist for the evening.

Yanosh take Blackhand up on his offer and sits down. Lowering his hood in the gloom of the commons room Yanosh scarred head gleams. He silently watches and listens as he eats and drinks. "It has been a long day." he tells the rest, "Sit and eat for we work for Witches and magic abounds in the parts."

Tishe' accepts the hospitality of Blackhand and the Mailed Fist, though she's not one for leading a conversation. Eating well and drinking sparingly, the displaced witch takes the time to acclimate more on the surroundings; trees, un domed cities, running water...

Later that night, Tishe' sets up her cauldron around back of the Inn and begins her Divination. Ten minutes pass as she traces symbols across the liquid, canting strange words and shuffling around the cauldron in a sort of dance. When the time is right, Tishe' casts a piece of paper into the cauldron, repeating the words on the paper aloud...

"What is our best path to rescuing Cassie alive and returning her to her parents."

Falmar joins the others for the Meal with the Fist. He eats heartily, and sets some aside for the nosy shadow sitting in the rafters. He spends most of his time listening to the conversations around the table, then excuses himself.

Falmar strolls around town listening to the wind blowing through the trees, the soft sounds of conversations as families gather at the end of the day. Eventually he returns to their rooms and ponders their situation.

If the witches know nothing of this, perhaps they know how to contact the Wood...or it's representative..perhaps... I still don't trust these non-tishe' Witches.

Taldera (AC 25, HP 86/97)

"Well, can't argue with free food and drink..."[/ i] Taldera thinks as she sits down, and reflects on the groups suspicion of the witches. "Hmm, about the witches...if you believe they are not telling all that they know, any ideas as to why they would withhold information, and how do you plan to convince them to tell us what they know, if they do know something more at all. If it helps I'm a rather proficient diplomat and umm..." [i]"how to colour it nicely..." "spinner of tales, particular the latter with my magic. I'm somewhat okay at forcing information with threats, but it's not really a great strength for me."

After any discussions about the witches, Taldera gets up, and both as a way to help repay Blackhand for his hospitality, and to help unwind after today, performs for the Mailed Fist, with both lute and voice. While performing she thinks absent mindedly, trying to forget about the events of today at least for a moment. "Hmm...shame I can't bring a full-sized harp along, even with magic. Maybe I should learn a new instrument when I get a chance, though there is never enough time..."

Serillana isn't that vocal during the dinner and drink. She can't make heads or tails from the situation, sitting quietly in her own thoughts. Even when the music starts, she doesn't get up and dance other. Just stares absently into the middle ground as she lets her over imaginative mind take over.

All thought thought culminate in her head...

Blackhand picks up on their frustration, and hearing Taldera speak he provides what limited insight an old campaigner can add. " Frustratin' isn't it. The tracks of the beast always lead back to enough rocks that naught but bullette or some other earth creature could follow them. Makes you think its too smart for a wolf don't it. All the trails are the same but none had a trap waitin' on em like you found. I think that was just happenstance. "
" The witches now, why would they hide information from you? They all but welcomed you with open arms. We was lucky to get pointed to the bunkhouse 'til we bagged that first psycho mage coming down from the Dreadlands. He was clearly deranged, like some experiment of his had gone horribly wrong. He saw us and just started shooting fire at us. Jordan and her Fist made a right pretty pincushion of him before me and the lads even got close to reaching him. I say he was mad because when we examined him he had some kind of diseased tissue all around his eyes and ears, like it was leakin from inside his head. Any true mage in his right mind, seein all those bows would have done something to protect himself, at least he could have aimed for them instead of me and my men. Made no sense. After that the councilaccepted we were here to help and that we were worth the coin we were bein paid. But you they want to stay. Probably because they can see that you have protected someone or somethin before. It shows in the way you ask questions and the way you talk to those who have lost. They know you care even though you don't know them from spit."

He pauses, eating his meal silently. After another glass of whatever dark spirit he is drinking he continues.
" Me and Jordan and our lads, we all started to have a stake in this when a farmer who had been kind to us fer no reason other than its the way folk are around here went missin. That farmer, over on the other side of Wolf hill he lived, he helped us out when he really didn't need to do it. We was on patrol and it was rainin somethin awful. All of us was soaked but good, and night was on the rise. We were settin up camp when he and his boy ride out to us, we was on his plot of land, and says come stay in our barn. It's cold and wet out here and we have the room for you and your horses. Relieved we pack up and sure enough he had plenty of room til his harvest came in and we all fit right nice in his barn. It was warm and dry. His wife comes out and brings us all stew and biscuits after we was there for an hour or so and they was kind as could be ta us. Never looked askance at me bein a Hobgobln. Not a word about me and the lads bein soldiers and as far as they knew stone cold killers. They was civil and even friendly. Less than a week later they was all gone. Looked like each one had been nabbed single like and dragged to the dooryard where we watched the water puddle days before. Then 'POOF' nuthin. no tracks leadin away, no traces but those ya seen today. We tracked the wolf back hard. We was all angry cuz he had been good people. We found the tracks leadin to a rocky patch of ground like you found. They coulda come from anywhere before that. Tell you what, you find that wolf and happen to take it alive, you bring it ta me. I'll skin it while it still breathes and let it go so I can hunt it down again myself. The pain and suffering it has caused these folk makes me angry. Mercs ain't supposed to get friendly with folks they contract to. They might be hired by the other side at any time. These folk have been decent to me, more'n even the Fist has been. I owe em, and I don't forget debts like that."
Perhaps realizing he has said more than he should have,Alamar grabs the bottle of spirits on the table and bids you goodnight. He retires upstairs and is not seen until morning.

Later, behind the Inn, Tishe casts a ritual to Sargrass to determine best route of saving Cassie. For what seems a prohibitive amount of time she waits, knowing the spell has succeeded, but not hearing an answer. Then in the cauldron an object bubbles to the surface. It is a mat of woven grass. Woven into it is a cryptic clue to the answer she seeks.

The wolf is the key, though shielded from prying eyes it be. The best Weaver can miss a stitch. Watch the pattern and catch the glitch.

Yanosh spends the night pondering the "wolf". There is something about the inteligence of the wolf that bothers him. Firtst its a single wolf. Being from the mountains he knows that wolves travel in packs more then single. Second the wolf always heads to rocks and uses them for cover. Again something a normal wolf would not do. Third if a wolf is involved then why no blood or death at the place of disapearance? This is no wolf. In his room he prays over this and conducts his normal rituals.

Thar too ponders the wolf and its strange actions. This is definitely not a normal wolf, it doesn't act like one and it's tricky...

He sits and uses all he knows about nature and the actions of this creature, as well as the recent cases of disappearing families. Somehow, someway, there's got to be a pattern or clue in it's actions... He'll cast Guidance and ponder his knowledge... Nature = 22

Tishe' relates the cryptic message to the others. "We are looking for the correct thread", she concludes, "the Wolf is the key to this mystery, but we need to see the pattern first..."

Tishe's brown eyes are bright as she looks at the others. "You can't find a pattern from a single thread. I think we need to get all the information together. First, could Blackhand provide us the names and locations of all the disappearances from the area? Maybe there is a pattern in the location of the abductions or a common person that they know. Perhaps a pattern will emerge. Perhaps to see where the next abduction could take place.

Second, we have a common scene of the nappers: There is a struggle, a woman and a wolf's footprints, only the wolf leaves and travels over rocky ground.
- are there any of the napping scenes where this is not exactly the same?

Third, neither the Mailed Fist nor the Witches are able to find the solution. Kayleigh's wolf Ironfang has even mentioned that the wolf trail stinks, and he hates the smell.
- do the trails go in the same direction or same source?
- has Ironfang smelled this stink before? What kind of stink? could Ironfang identify it as undead, outsider, aberration?

Finally, that Cassie is being held in a cell-like room and not killed. What is this purpose? Have there been any ransom or threats sent? What will happen if the nappings continue and who would it be to most benefit from that change?

Tishe' collects as much as she can, thinking of the pattern and looking for the single thread out of place that could unravel the whole mystery.

DM CORRECTION
The wolf tracks never leave. The wolf tracks enter the area, the woman's tracks move around the area a bit and then neither set of tracks leave. The tracks you have been following are the inbound tracks of the wolf. You have backtracked them to a stony place, in this latest case a fieldstone wall. That is the last place they can be backtracked to.

Replying to Tishe', Serillana starts letting her imagination run free. "According to the story that Blackhand has told us, that abduction was a whole family, not just the ladies. Could that be the anomaly? And have all the abductees been farmers? Maybe whoever the abductor is, the wolf or whatever, is trying to lure families into the whole situation, making them think that the authorities can't help and only they can? I'm just wildly guessing, but there is a whole heap of scenarios that can stem from this..."

Falmar thinks for a bit...

IT could be that someone is using this animal to deliver their Art.. This is something I could do with the right spell.. Moxy could fly in and touch someone delivering a spell that could relocate them to another location, or disable them leaving little scuffle or signs of struggle. IT could also be a large dog, that may not be seen as a threat. Somehow all of these people are being taken without much warning or struggle at all. Which points to either the Arts, or...someone they know and trust. I sensed no evil when we met with the Witches, but this may not be happening out of evil intent. Three's also the chance that this wolf can change it's shape like Gilan used to. The humanoid footsteps and the wolf could be one and the same. Do we know who the first person to come up missing was ?

The heroes all discuss what is really going on and agree to gather more information for now, trying to formulate a plan for catching the wolf and protecting the Valley. Information will be key to this, and will take some time to gather.

Conversion to Pathfinder begins on Monday. We have been given until January 2st to get converted, and Based on what Dai and I have planned for this we would like to convert you sooner rather than later. Toward that end the next few weeks should all be roleplay, you will see what I mean. During that time please get you character made over and become comfortable with the Pathfinder system. Dai will be taking back the lead on Monday. Have a Happy Halloween .

Serillana gathers as much information as she can after she performs for a group. "At least give me some information for that AMAZING performance!" Serillana thinks as she takes mental notes of what people are telling her.

She also tries to find some time to find a weapon smith where she can make some backup bullets for herself, or buy some if no-one will lend her the materials.

Taldera goes around the town, asking the locals for information on the missing people. As a way of thanking the people for their time, she performs minor magical tricks or does a quick performance for anyone she asks questions too. (Diplomacy (and Gather Information, same skill now) is +21 if needed.)

[OOC: Converting now, yay for more skill points and being tougher. Also for everyone's reference Inspire Courage is now a competence bonus of +3 (instead of a morale bonus of +2).]
