DM Cayzle - The Words of the Seer Thursday December 16th, 2010 11:38:22 AM
[OOC: Really sorry to miss a day.]
Before the wizard makes contact, Jet tends to wounds, and all are soon healthy. Alexi does his best to keep watch, worried about a trail -- but that is okay, as it turns out. Garret helps with concealment of the craft, and Keela with her Alarm and Rope Trick spells. Galin watches the thrul, and finds them to be phlegmatic and obedient. OOC: All three lizard-hounds died from wounds. Zeph and Galin tak about their backgrounds.
Alexi and Garret let others speak to the dwarf wizard, Katarina Chotraksi.
Galin thanks her most gently, and she offers to add him to the company, if he will make the same agreement.
[OOC: That agreement, taken from a June 23 post: "She wants you all to continue to work for the Company, on a freelance basis. All prior commitments are considered fulfilled, given the circumstances. However, if you do work with the Company, there will be certain perks. For one thing, the teleportation of materiel can be arranged. If you send a list of what you've got, you can even arrange for some trades with the Catacombs, at one step removed. Other needs can be provided. Your first mission is to find out more about the lizard folk, without engaging directly. What do they want? Where are they from? Are they moving in or just passing through? What are their intentions toward the mine? She advises you to find a hidey hole and scout out from there, or else stay on the move. Trying to hold the mine yields nothing for now and may be very dangerous."]
Garret gives a full report, ably assisted by Charek, Zeph (detailing the enemy numbers), and Keela (details on enemy casters). Afterward, Jet and Garret want to know what to do next. Zeph and Jet both suggest the company send a small army to occupy the mining camp. Garret suggests bargaining, with the captive thrul as translators. Alexi has a couple clever ideas, including retaking the mine, moving all operations underground, and making the lizards dig them out if they want to fight.
Charek asks about the refugees. Katarina says that a few have severed their ties with the company. Most are working or waiting, supported by jobs that the company has found for them, or just on hold. Some a re very angry and eager to return. Others just want to make a success of what they started.
Katarina explains that teleports and armies and mages are not available to help you in your job, and they probably would not work anyway. She says she consulted a seer to find out what to do next, and if they have any chance of taking back the mine. The seer's voice changed and in a fit, she chanted the following, which Katarina was quick to copy down. She sends you a copy via Archon and also tells it to you. Here are the seer's words:
Away from ocean, stream, or rain it liess It liess in truth where liess leap up for play. Amid the nayss, the choruss of the ayess, That lap, and leap, and loft it on itss way.
But one leapss up, retreating in retreat, And liess no longer, happy not to fly. He wallowss in disgrace, despair, defeat. A prince no more, a rogue, a-rant, awry.
So seek the place where weeping willowss wail. He dwellss as if a man in monkey's clan. But where? A dwarf should know, but mind may fail. And only doom will follow other plan.
Just offer him the blood, the blood he cravess, And then there might be luck in what he savess.
Katarina does not understand hardly any of it, but she hopes you might. But it does seem to say that another plan would fail, so they have to do what the verse suggests. If it can be figured out. Any ideas?
Galin HP 58/58 AC 19 Thursday December 16th, 2010 12:06:23 PM
Galin looks around the group with a confused look as the seers words have no meaning to him. " Does this mean anything to you guys, I have never been anywhere other then the mine of Al Mathir or the mine at Bryn Baraz so I am little help here.
Jet Stormway (AC: 22/21/22 no dex, HP: 26/53) Thursday December 16th, 2010 12:29:09 PM
Jet could speculate all day on this little bit of knowledge, but instead, he goes over to Makar and the others and tells them the story, then goes on, "So with truth, tell us, has anyone in your race abondoned their post recently or has one of the nobility come up missing? Does anything about this ring a bell in your mind as to what it means?"
DM Cayzle - Makar Thursday December 16th, 2010 12:51:10 PM
Makar snorts. "No one of my race leavess his post. That'ss called treason, and the sentence is death." The thrul says that sometimes the higher castes do leave society, for shorter or longer durations. That's called "a retreat," and there is great loss of face in it. He does not know about anyone in particular, royal or otherwise, who has done that in any recent news. But he wouldn't. "I am, after all, just a thrul and a junior officer."
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:26 HP:33/33] PF Garret Thursday December 16th, 2010 12:56:47 PM
Garret ponders the mysterious verse and says, "Why can't these silly seers just speak common? It would make things quite a bit simpler."
He thinks a moment as Jet questions the Lizards, then continues, "Where weeping willows wail? A man in a monkey clan? What madness is this?"
Jet Stormway (AC: 22/21/22 no dex, HP: 26/53) Thursday December 16th, 2010 4:35:13 PM
Jet says in a plain, even tone, without emotion, to get his point across. "If no one of your race left their post, then you wouldn't have a name for doing so nor a punishment. Pretending to be better then your captors is making you look quite foolish, if you haven't noticed yet."
Then Jet goes into his own thought's a bit, thinking of their journey here. They went through a forest at first. Were there willows weeping in there? What about round the Ambush Drakes, which Jet is very glad there isn't more of? Rescuing the children?
He then looks over and down at Charek, "Well, a dwarf should know, nut mind may fail..." Jet throws him a skin of wine, "Let's get you thinking straight!"
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:26 HP:33/33] PF Garret Thursday December 16th, 2010 6:24:35 PM

He also looks at Charek.

Taking quite a large swallow, he poners a moment and then shrugs. " Well the bit about away from ocean stream or rain suggests perhaps a desert or perhaps the Scab, perhaps talking about a dragon in there somewhere some how fallen into disgrace and in hiding or sulking."
Charek takes another swig and thinks about where he might have heard a story from his father or clan about a man living with monkeys or an area with a lot of willow tree.

OOC: at least it's not where Whomping Willows Whomp. :)
IC: "Charek has a point about a desert, but how much do dwarves know about deserts? Don't they know more about underground? A cave is away from ocean, stream, or rain. And what sort of creature craves blood? Perhaps the wheeping willows are at the entrance to a cave where this creature has gone to hide his shame."
Backpost: Alexi is busy with the horses, giving each one a good rubdown when Galin approaches. A brush is tossed to him before he can say anthing and is directed to help brush down the horses' legs.
"They like it," he adds. In due corse Galin steers the conversation to Alexi's background and what brought him out into the middle of nowhere.
"You ever heard of the Mailed Fist? Probably not, being you've known nothing but Al Mathir. Well, the Mailed Fist is a mercenary military organization. The best there is. It is not a rabble of misfits that terrorize the countryside. It is a full fledged army. It hires out to kings, cities, temples, but always for a noble cause. It's code is very strict. My grandfather and father faught all their working lives for the Fist. So I, of course, joined too. I worked my way through the infantry and proved myself as an able cavalryman.
However, after several years of service, I tired of the military life and decided to strike out on my own. I was in Floating City looking for employment when I saw the mining company's advertisement for needed security for the new settlement of Bryn Baraz, so I signed up. That got me here."

Zeph nods at Garret. "I think you may be right... where weeping willows wail? A man in a monkey's clan. If it's a lizardman, then perhaps he is chilling out with his smaller kin? Like geckos and the like."
Zeph smiles at the analogy of men playing with monkeys being equal to a Lizardman playing with salamanders.
Then Zeph thinks about the last line... Blood he craves.... "Well. I'm gonna memorize a few Detect Victim spells. If he seeks revenge, then I should be able to locate him if we get on the right trail."

He looks over to see the answer of the lizards, while at the same time trying to think back to the caves they had used as an escape, wondering if they are somehow tied into this. Keela chews her lip, mulling over the seer's words. "The seer seems to have been inhabited by something lizard-y," she muses. "The accent is like Makar's."
"'As if a man in a monkey's clan.' So, men are to monkeys as lizard-folk are to, what? Regular lizards? A lizard-man living among lizards, or drakes?"
"'Weeping willows wail' and 'a Dwarf should know'. Should know, but not necessarily does? Underground, maybe? Or a lost Dwarven stronghold? But where do the willows come in? Oh, I wish I'd had a longer apprenticeship. I might know more of this kind of thing."

[OOC: Friends, I apologize for my very poor posting last week. Between real life, getting a tummy bug, and so on ... well, you know. Anyway, I plan to post every morning (at least, before noon) this week. However, Wold tradition is that this week and next are slowdown times, and if the holidays keep you from posting, that's okay. Please do stop by the Giggling Ghost for our annual holiday festivities, hosted by our very own Kathy, who plays Keela.]
Garret seems frustrated by the ambiguity in the message from the seer.
Jet tries to think of something, and remembers the forest through which he and the colonists forest traveled to get to this to the site of the mine. He does not remember any willows in particular, but there may have been some.
Keela thinks back on that too, and her knowledge returns to her -- yes, there was a forest, and it is called the Crying Woods.
Jet also tries to recall the details of the ambush drakes, but those seemed more draconic than lizard-like, and they were not in the Woods.
Charek drinks the "memory-enhancing" wine that Jet offers, and tries to stretch his brains. He has a nagging feeling that he is forgetting something relevant ... something he directly experienced. But what?
He thinks about where there is no water, like the desert. Zeph sagely thinks about the dark dry places of the earth.
Galin cleverly puts two and two together and realizes that the oracular poem is probably referring to an exiled noble from Al Mathir, one who is "on retreat."
Zeph and Keela ponder the strange lines about monkeys and men. They cleverly see it as an analogy, and that it means the exiled noble is living among smaller lizards. Dragons? Salamanders? Geckoes?
Zeph also thinks that if the exile wants blood, maybe that is a coded way to say he or she wants revenge.
Jet has a brainstorm -- one of these captured thrul is the noble they seek! But the three thrul, after a discussion in their own language, firmly deny it. "We are thrul, we cannot be noble. Only Karkasan and Mathir can be nobless in Al Mathir, and we are not on retreat, and we did not retreat from you!" Nothing in the tattoos says otherwise, to any degree you can tell.
So to recap ... your best guess is that you are looking for an exiled noble, maybe with an ax to grind, living among smaller lizards in the Crying Wood. Maybe in a cave?
But that still leaves untouched the issue of what Charek should know.

"Back to the woods to look for a cave?" He looks again at the flying machine and wonders if the entire group, including the horses, could jam into it and fly where they needed to go. "But still, the lizards themselves?"
Garret attempts to speak to Katarina and says, "Have you use of these lizardmen? They are currently bound to us, but I'm not sure that we have much use for them. Perhaps they can aid you in your negotiations or decisions on what to do with the mines?"

Alexi ponders the new revelations and marvels at the intelligence, or pure dumb luck, of the group. Then Alexi slapped himself upside the head.
"Of course! Now I remember! That first day was so hectic and confusing that the name of those woods we passed through after unloading from the barges from Floating City seemed rather unimportant. But that forest we traveled through those first days on our way to Bryn Baraz was called The Crying Woods"
OOC: I'm assuming that Keela has divulged that she remembers a woods called the Crying Woods.
Alexi fumbles in his backpack and pulls out a scroll case. From that he pulls out his rolls of maps. Riffling through several sheets of parchements he comes across the one he is looking for. Unrolling it, he stares for a moment then smiles. "Ah, see? Here it is." Alexi points at a rough map of the trail leaving from their disembarking point from Floating City and ending up at Bryn Baraz. A small circle near the path about two days wagon-speed is marked, 'Giant Weasels', and another circle several days wagon-speed further up the path is marked 'Saved Lollena'. Pointing to that whole area he says, "The Crying Woods. The path we took led through the Crying Woods."

Jet asks Charek about his adventures. Under the influence of the wine and Jet's gentle questioning, the dwarf begins to reminisce. He thinks about the Scab, and the trip to the Crescent Valley. But so far nothing seems relevant. What else will the dwarf recall?
Garret communicates via Message with Katarina, filling her in on how the brainstorming is going, and asking her opinion of what to do with the lizard warriors. She ponders, and suggests that they would be useful if the mining camp is ever re-established at Bryn Baraz. They may also prove their worth in any future negotiations. As freelancers working for the Company, you are free to put them to work as you see fit.
Alexi looks at his maps ... yes, the Crying Woods are clearly marked, as both he and Keela now recall. But what comes next?
[OOC: Your DM has a rough map of the area, and would like to give you a more refined version in the next day or two.]

Jet asks if the dwarf mage, Katarina, has made other inquiries. She says that she has, and turned up nothing, both before and after consulting the seer. She says, by the way, that the donation to the seer was large, and she hopes you all can help her justify it.
Charek recalls more details about his recent past, and some of his recollections seem very interesting indeed. He says, "Later on the trip after we left the floating city, Gruemor and I were traveling overland for a good while. There was a Lord Perimon, we nearly ran a foul of a manshaped tree, and just on the eastern edge of the crying woods about 100 miles from the mine we came across a group of 12 man sized stubby tailed lizard men, they were very roughly attired and armed, and mage Katrina said they were different from the ones that were attacking the settlement so we detoured around them. And then we found a group of nomadic hunters who called themselves the people who sleep under stars. Then we found you all."
Garret struggles with the geography of the area, but Charek's words help.
Alexi tries to cleverly come up with a way to divine an answer with the help of spells not intended to give quite that level of aid. But is it necessary? All signs suggest the Crying Wood area as a likely destination. And would it even work? Jet, a trained cleric, correctly says no.
Charek digs out his map, and the party compares notes. [OOC: Like I said, I hope to have a map, with an actual grid overlay to tell distances, tomorrow or maybe tonight.]
Garret asks the total time that the lizards are indebted. [OOC from your DM: If anyone wants to go back and count questions, it is 10 years minus two months per question. If no one wants to do that, I'll rule arbitrarily that it is 12 questions plus a year for teaching their language, so call it three years off a ten year indenture, so far. Feel free to disagree, if you have time to dig up evidence, which I do not, preferring to work on the map! :-) ]
Jet wonders about the flying craft. Katarina suggests an Identify spell. Remember that it is designed to hold 1 small pilot and 4 medium passengers. You all have two small and five medium passengers, assuming that Galin's wife takes the mounts and the thrul to the Ahote. Crowded? Sure. Beyond capacity? Dunno. If the craft cannot be used, Jet thinks it should be destroyed, since Katarina says she can't take it.

"Or, we can give the Thrull leave to adventure in our name, while we get Galins wife to the Ahote. If we continue to get experience like we are, Keela will be able to find our indentured adventurers with magic in a year or two. They do that while we all go back to the Ahote. Maybe there, we can switch mounts with the lizard animals and our disguises will be even more believable. One of us can try to use the leaders badge, likely Alexi, since he actually seems to care about other languages as well as being a medium sized creature.:

personally, i don't really want the thrulls with us either. we need to get katarina to take them off our hands.
IC: Alexi answers Garrett with a wide smile of pride in his mapmaking skills, "No problem!" Then he looks at the map again and says, "Nooooo problem" with a sheepish smile. "Well, the Ahote camp we just left is over here somewhere," he points to the map. "Our route will go this way," he points in a different spot and traces his finger past the markings for Bryn Baraz and to a gap in a long escarpment. A path leads through the gap and winds through hills marked 'very dusty, little water'. On a spot on the plateau near the path is a mark, 'Ahote hunting camp'. The path winds it's way onward and the terrain changes to grassy hills and forest, until it reaches thick forest, where it is labeled "The Crying Woods". The path then leads to the lake and docks for Floating City.
"I don't think we will encounter any Ahote if we head straight to the road that passes through The Crying Woods on it's way to Floating City."
Alexi is discouraged somewhat that his idea had no chance of success. "Well, I guess we get there first, then start asking questions."
OOC: Your estimate on the time of servitude reduction sounds fine with me.
IC: Alexi addresses Katarina, "Well, you did say that our first mission was to find out more about these lizard folk. We've found out a lot, but I don't see any reason to play the middle man here anymore. We have three Thrulls at your disposal. With them with you, you can ask as many questions as you like. Each question will get them 2 months of their 10 year time of servitude. We've already knocked of about 3 years worth. Galin will give the lady his full life story to Katarina any anyone that want to here " I was born a slave and have never been anywhere other then the mine or a fighting ring. I was born a slave and soon after my mother died say some of the other older slaves. I was used as a entertainment play thing that is where this came from ( pointing to his white eye) and the rest of my decorations so to speak. Never met my father and don't know if there are any other siblings. As I grew up it was easy for the reptiles to tell I was far stronger and healthier then the average halfling slave so I was used in there pit fighting to make my masters money or prestige. For most of my life until just resent I was on there flying city but when I was transfered to the mine here with luck and faith I escaped with my wife help. Its been very hard on her and if you can get it her story is far worse then mine. Galin turns to Jet and Alexi I think that may be best she is taking this very hard and may need some help that we can not give, even having them guard, and care for her until she is back up on her feet might be a good thing for them to do as its there race that did this, I think that a good start to maybe changing there ways would be to care for her, This would solve both of the issues at hand as my wife is in no condition to fight or travel. Talking to Katarina again [b] my lady I do not know you or you me but these people do and trust you and I believe that Domi has brought me here, but my fair wife as had a hard life and freedom seems to come with a price that she was not prepared for, Something in my genital wife is a miss and I do not know what but with time and rest and maybe a womans touch she will return to me again, until that time will you watch over her, Use these creature to help you and as servants to look after her and protect her in return for the pain that there race has brought her. I am not a man of words but I plead with you she will not be able to make this trip with us and I can not leave her side unless she is cared for.
OOC kristel has been very sick since she decided to return, that and our hockey schedule for the kids, Christmas, and a few other things has made her posting drop to nothing but I am hoping the new year will things will slow down and she will be able to post again

Garret looks to Keela and Zeph, saying, "Can either of you identify this flying thing? Do you have any magical spells that might make it so we can use it? That would certainly be a quicker way to travel all the way across the lands."
ooc: If Galin's wife goes with the Thrul to the Ahote, will she be able to join back up? Maybe we could send her towards them, and when she's ready to join, she can appear, huffing and puffing, following us?
Cayzle comments: We'll make it work out somehow. I have an idea.

"I'm afraid I don't have that spell in my spellbook," Keela says. "Perhaps Mistress Katarina would consent to sell us a scroll or two."
DM Cayzle - Dwarf says WHAT? Thursday December 23rd, 2010 1:57:29 PM DM OOC: Alexi asks: "OOC: when we finally give Katarina a tally of our loot and figure out each share, will our purchases then be based on the Pathfinder equipment/magic item list?" Short answer, yes. Long answer, I have to get my s***f together and give you guys all the details. Sorry for the delay. It may be that I'll put the game on hiatus for a week to spend time vetting PC sheets and getting everyone converted.
Jet talks about options for dealing with the thrul, and what the party will do next. He has ideas for approaching the mining settlement, too.
Alexi shows off his map, which is a beauty! [DM OOC: Or rather, it WILL be! LOL!]
Alexi offers Katarina the thruls -- for conversation now? Or later? Or to bring to Plat City? Jet offers a concurring opinion. She says she will think about that.
Galin spends a lot of time talking with the mage. Katarina detects magic through the scry and asks him if he realizes that dagger he got when he escaped was highly magical? She is sympathetic to his story, and hopes that he will lend a hand to the group. She asks if he would like to give his wife into her care? [OOC: if she is with the mage, it might be easier to get her back into the story later.]
Garret asks if Keela or Zeph can Identify the flying craft. Zeph says yes. Does he? Keela can't, and Katarina says she will send several scrolls.
Charek, silent for now, may be wondering why everybody is ignoring the remarkable revelation he just told the group about.

DM Cayzle - The Diligent Wizard Monday December 27th, 2010 12:08:23 PM
Zeph spends the requisite time and becomes well acquainted with the Identify spell. Soon the only course left is to cast it, and he does so. The diligent wizard is rewarded with the knowledge of a command word required to activate the magic item, that it can only be activated once per day. Moreover, Zeph comes to understand that the operation of the craft requires continual concentration. After an hour or so, increasingly tougher checks will be required. Any break in concentration means the craft will float down to a landing.

Of course, that was a lot of wagons, moving slowly and stopping early for families to make camp. A small group would move much faster.
IC: Alexi ponders the map some. "Well, good thing is that we might be able to stop by Floating City. Maybe their library might have something. Or a cartographer migh have some maps showing caves in the area."

Garret watches as Zeph tries to fly the small machine. He then looks around at the rest of the group and says, "I hope everyone here is ready for some flying."
When Jet speaks of the pub, Garret smiles and says, "Indeed, I agree. It would be nice to rest and have some ale soon." He looks over again at the map, "But our map doesn't seem to have such markings on it, so we will just have to search for one. Jet, while flying, your job will be to find us ale," he says with a smile.
DM Cayzle - Let's All Find The Path Monday January 3rd, 2011 5:57:41 PM
OOC: Per Jerry, we are moving to Pathfinder this week. Everyone has to be translated by Friday. Please post links to your new PF sheets if you have not done so already. I'll be vetting them asap
The adventurers move goods around and conduct vicarious Catacombs transactions with the help of the mage's friendly lantern archon, which can teleport objects easily, but not living creatures. It takes a day to do that, and to train and hone your skills after your latest adventures. Katarina sends along a small cask of fine dwarven ale for Jet.
Zeph sits in the pilot seat (a tight fit since it was clearly made for a small character, so he has to squeeze. He speaks the command word and concentrates. He learns that he can activate the flying craft so that it will levitate about three feet off the ground, but that is all he can do with the command word given to him by the Identify spell. The craft could then be easily pushed by a walker or two, but it's not exactly flying. Any other ideas on how to get that flying machine really airbound?
Any ideas for coping with the fact that it is really designed only for a single small pilot and four medium passengers? Do you try to overload it? Who piles on?
What orders do you give the thrul?
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:25/25/19 HP:44/44 Ki:9] PF Garret Monday January 3rd, 2011 6:22:04 PM
Garret laughs as Zeph gets the craft up, but cannot move it. He jumps up and slaps the craft to see if he can spin it.
"I guess we could tie a rope to it and drag it along behind us."
Garret takes Jet aside and asks, "What do you think about these lizards? We cannot kill them, but I'm not sure we can take them with us. But if we just free them, well, who knows what they'll do."
Jet Stormway (AC: 22/21/22 no dex, HP: 26/53) Monday January 3rd, 2011 7:11:14 PM
Jet looks down at Garret, "I already gave you my opinions sir! Either let them adventure for us in other areas unexplored by us or we send them to work for Bantom, with the female halfling slave. Anything else will either get them killed, which if that is to happen, I will just kill them now instead of knowing they could suffer later, or they will be recaptured by their own people and used against us again."
Jet also looks at the gear the lizards used to descend from the craft while it is aloft, without them taking damage.
Jet will also, look in the cargo area of the craft. Maybe it has mechanical things in the cargo area that must be used to get it higher in the air?

OOC: sorry for the missed post. Work got REAL hectic, (that's what happens when you work for an airline that is acutally making a profit), and holiday stuff.
Ok, updating Alexi with 35,000 xps and spending 23,500 gps, will do this tomorrow.
IC: Alexi watches Zeph float the craft. He remembers that to move forward, the craft had the blades rotating. "Zeph, looks like you need the command word for these propelling blades to work. Then you can move forward. For now, though we can tie a rope and pull it along easily enough. By the time we get to the Crying Woods you may know all the command words. This craft will be great for scouting, but we need to build some protection for the pilot. We've knocked two down just by disabling the pilot."
OOC: someone with some woodcraft skills and a bit of engineering should be able to come up with some protection for the pilot.
IC: Alexi disagrees with Jet. "They could prove invaluable in hunting food for us and when we find this outcast, they may be invaluable as intermediaries. But I'm not the leader. However, if you spend the night inquiring of the gods the wisdom of taking them along, we may get something to go on, or be more confused. I'll go with whatever Garrett decides to do."

Zeph sighs in frustration over the flying device.
He sits in the pilot seat while it floats 3feet off the ground and looks around the cockpit for clues. Perception = 17. He will try to flick every lever at least once to test what they do. He will also look under the seat. Even take 20 on this one for a 31 perception.
If that fails, then Zeph will think long and hard about Arcane command words. Perhaps a command word to start the propellers or to spread the wings are different, but still possibly similar to the one to activate the craft. (Knowledge Arcana =21). (OOC: Cayzle- so, what's the command word?)
After trying different command words that could mean "Go Up" or the like in Draconic and in the LizardFolk Language (I took skill point in Linguistics for this), Zeph will also search the flying machine for any clues, especially around the propellers and wings. (Disable Divice =26, or take 20 for a 46)
If all that fails, then Zeph says to the group, Well. I got it hovering at least. Let's take it with us and perhaps we can use it in our negotiations with the Forsaken Prince. Maybe he has more information on how to get it to work too." Zeph suggests.
Then Zeph speaks about the three Thruls that are with them, "They can still be of use. Language, negotiations, and trap-spotting." Zeph says with a wink, knowing that the only other real option is to kill them - release and possible recapture is not acceptable.
(OOC: Still trying to decide whether to make Zeph an Elf or not. What do you guys think?)

With Zeph's Knowledge of Arcana, he comes to understand that some extra component is missing. In fact, there are no levers, buttons, or controls. Cayzle Comments Are you saying I'm not nice? Hmmm ...
Addison replies: Not at all! Don't misinterpret. Your amazingly nice. ;) I just thought that if the slot was something in the cockpit, that it would be common sense to insert the device around my neck. I just didn't state such a thing precisely. I take too much for granted.

Garret watches Zeph try to control the craft. "Well, if we can get that thing working and all of us but the lizards in it, then I say we climb aboard and head for the willows. But if we can't fly in it, we might as well take the lizards with us as our servants.""
He watches above to see how Zeph does with the craft.
Zeph discovers the pilot license slot, and makes an uncomfortable discovery. It only works if it is worn around the neck (using the amulet body slot, by the way) AND placed in the correct slot. That's not a problem if your head is normally close to the floor, but for a medium-sized creature, such as Zeph, it means flying the craft requires squeezing into a small seat AND bending way over to put the plaque in the slot. Kind of like driving a car with your chin on the dashboard. And nothing holds the plaque in place, so if you jerk up, you lift the card out, and the craft descends. And you can only activate the craft once a day.
It may occur to the wizard that this is a great situation for a Reduce Person spell, or an Alter Self in the form of a gnome or halfling.
While Zeph experiments and gets a bad kink in his spine, the issue of cargo capacity rears its head. Right now we have Jet, Keela, Alexi, Charek, and Zeph who are all medium size characters. We also have Garret and Galin who are small in size and count as half. Call that six people-equivalents. But the craft is designed to hold 4 and a half. When you all pile in, you find that exceeding the design parameters by 33 percent results in a steep cost in speed and responsiveness. Where's that Mass Reduce Person spell?
Of course, you could operate the craft at normal capacity and leave two people to walk, ride, run, or swim. So long as one of the halflings stays aboard, that is.
[It may occur to you to be glad there are no Taurs among your band of heroes!]
Meanwhile, Galin is saying goodby to his wife. But where is she going? It is time for a decision, people! What Path will you Find her? So to speak.
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:25/25/19 HP:44/44 Ki:9] PF Garret Tuesday January 4th, 2011 7:58:35 PM
Garret watches Zeph figure the craft out. He calls out, "I can run along the ground pretty quickly, how fast can you make that thing go?"
"Hey, let's all pile in for the moment and see if it works."
As for Galin's wife, I propose that we direct the lizards to guide her back to the Ahote and serve her until we give them further direction.
OOC: I've got a move of 40, with everyone else in, what's the movement?
Alexi (AC: 22/11, HP:62/62) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:37/37) Tuesday January 4th, 2011 8:53:46 PM
OOC: Addison, make Zeph whatever feels right for you. We had two elves in our party before. I don't know if there is any difference in PF elf and D&D elf, but having an elf around is always good.
IC: Alexi retorst, "Ok Jet. But if they bring back a deer, you are saying you won't eat any of it?" Then he smiles, "I'll teach 'em to make beer, ha!"
Alexi tells Zeph, "I don't mind riding it that thing as an experiment, but I'll be riding Lobo. Besides, i'd think we should use it like the lizardmen did, as a scouting platform. See how high you can take it and then with some good eyes on lookout, we should be able to avoid or be prepared for whatever comes our way by several miles."

Keela Wednesday January 5th, 2011 12:39:27 AM
"Looks like we need a longer cord," Keela says, watching Zeph struggle with the little ivory plaque.
"Maybe put one or two people aloft to scout while the rest of us walk?" she suggests. "We have the horses, too, so somebody's got to stay on the ground."

"Now that Zeph identified it, does he have to be the pilot, or can garret or Galin do it? I can't see a Kothrull knowing magic, but it was flying the thing."
Cayzle Comments: Anyone can try to pilot it if they know the command word and are wearing the license (the chain to which the plaque is attached is itself also an integral part of the item, by the way!). So you've gotta ask yourself a question: "Do I have any ranks in Fly skill?" Well, do ya, punk? Muahaha!

Garret gives the instructions to the Thrul, "Since you are bound to serve all of us, we now require you to serve this one." He points to Galin's wife as he continues, "You are to escort her back to the Ahote and continue to serve and protect her honorably against all her enemies. Avoid your own people at all costs. We shall return to you before your time of servitude is over." Garret points to the map, indicates the Ahote location and says, "Can you find your way to this place?"
With the flying craft, Garret looks around nervously and says, "I could learn to fly it, I suppose, but I'd be more comfortable to be one on the ground."
OOC: Garret has a 5 in fly. And yeah, I don't see how having an elf along could hurt.

After talking to the mage and her pet Galin submits a list of items that he needs and waits.
When his items start coming he will dress in his new armor and start packing things away in a pack that arrived. Now the former slave looks a little more like a hero then a mistreated slave that you freed a few days ago. He is dresses from head to toe is silvery, glistening metal full plate with three circles etched into it's breast and a full shield on his left arm also of the same silvery, glistening metal with the same symbols carved into it, hanging from his belt seams to be a hammer now rather then the sword that was there before.
When he has completed packing the various items that he has bought he will wander over to where the party is and add his two bits. " Garrett i think you are right the best spot for both the lizards and my wife at this time would be with the Ahote and Jet I do not think that I would be the best choice to fly this thing but I would not mind the ride rather then on horse or foot"
OOC I have added some clerical ability to Galin so we do have a bit more healing available now I believe that the PF sheet is ready other then spell choice but not sure Cayzle can you look at it and let me know what is missing when you have time

(OOC: Galin- I request that you look into the Paladin class if you want to effectively mix cleric and fighter. The Lay on Hands ability also has a burst-heal option. And Halflings have a bonus to Charisma in PF, thus making them some of the best dex-based Paladins around! And casting is Cha-based, not Wis-based. And you can smite evil with ranged attacks, halfling sling stone anyone? Just a friendly suggestion. =)
Zeph gets a bad crick in his neck from driving the Flying Craft in the seat made for a small creature.
He hops out of the flying craft and says, "Can anyone help me rework the cockpit to suite a Medium person? Any knowledge about engineering or woodworking would be helpful. If not, then perhaps I should just shrink myself."
Zeph spends some time memorizing a couple of Reduce Person spells to make traveling easier. Good thing he decided to study Transmutation greatly.
Zeph likes Garret's idea to send the Lizards to the Ahote with Galin's wife, but he states a counter-suggestion, "Look. I know splitting the party is theoretically bad. But Keela's suggestion has merit. Lets have a ground "main" group traveling with the horses, and the Thrul. And I can fly the craft overhead and scout ahead about 100 yards or so. That way I can spot any trouble. Anyone wanna ride with me?"
Zeph says the last sentence with a huge smile on his face as he pats the flying device, fully intending on cutting some flips in the air.
His last comment is this, "We need to name her. Whatcha say we paint her Sky Blue for arial camouflage and name her the Blue Jay?" Zeph says as he plays with the group's new toy.

DM Cayzle - Goodbye, Thrul! Thursday January 6th, 2011 6:23:07 PM
The party talks about keeping some aloft and others on the ground party travels. Garret says he would like to walk, please. Alexi will ride once in a while, but he prefers to stay on his mount Lobo as a rule. Charek too is glad to be earthbound.
Garret orders the Thrul to escort Marilsaya back to the Ahote and to obey her. They look to Keela for confirmation.
Galin cuts a dashing figure after his new gear arrives. He reveals his devotion to Domi, as well.
Zeph considers how to rework the flying craft for flight with a medium pilot. Considering that only the iron triangular frame is actually magical, and the wooden and canvas parts just there to keep everyone seated, that actually seems doable. The only requirement is that the pilot license has to be in contact with the iron. But it will take a woodworker to do the job right.
Does Keela tell the thrul to go? Will you keep one or all to stay with the ground party?

So I'm thinking like Dual wielding whip and rapier, disarming, tripping, and... sneak attacking. THough the whip does Subdual damage, you CAN sneak attack with it! I wonder if subdual stacks with lethal to get to unconscious?)
After some research: it does! If you give a person 15 subdual damage, and then knock them down to 15HP lethally, then they are OUT! Though extremely stable.

DM Cayzle - Trial Flight Tuesday January 11th, 2011 8:02:40 AM
Zeph practices flying and Galin joins him in the sky. Keela observes closely, feather fall ready in case of disaster. They contemplate making changes to accommodate a medium pilot -- which seems reasonable for a competent woodcrafter.
With a reluctant word from Keela, the thrul and Marisalya leave to go to the Ahote.
Jet and Garret watch from the ground.
They see that Zeph is getting the hang of it. He gets to where he can think of where he wants the aircraft to go, and it goes there. It turns mostly slowly, though, and descends and ascends slowly. [OOC: Unlike most flying magic items, this gives no bonus to Fly checks. If you want to maneuver with sharper turns or steeper climbs and dives, make Fly checks. And don't fail by five or more!]
Garret sees the thrul departing and asks if they should stay. [OOC: LAST CHANCE ALERT! The thrul are going unless I can get three people to say they should stay!]
The day goes by, and tomorrow the party will embark on a journey south to the Crying Woods.
[OOC: Still vetting PC sheets. Thanks to all for the hard work they are doing!]
Alexi (AC: 25/13, HP:66/66) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) Tuesday January 11th, 2011 12:17:22 PM
Alexi gives a last word to the Thruls about keeping up their end of their Contract of Servitude, hoping that in five or six years it won't matter that they will know where the Ahote camp is. He then takes the Ahote medicine bag from his neck and places the leather throng around Marisalya's neck.
"This will identify you to the Ahote as a friend. Good luck in your travels, and when you see Tocho's sister, tell her Alexi looks forward to the day he gets to meet her."
Alexi sighs, he knows he will probably never meet that warrior woman but at least Marisalya has enough information to confirm her relationship with their group and be welcomed in.
Alexi watches Zeph and Galin try out the flying craft, seeing great potential for it. It occurs to him how practical such a thing is out in the open plains, but where they are going, the Crying Woods, he hopes there will be enough open medows spaced appropriately to land the craft when necessary.

Fly check =33 Concentration =18 (which is only caster level+spell casting stat in Pathfinder apparently.)
As Zeph flies the new aircraft, he starts off trying to take it slow, focusing strongly on how to slow and stop the craft. He will practice a few dry run landings, making sure he has that part down.
Slowly, he gains his confidence in his abilities to fly. He concentrates on going faster, and taking sharper turns, ascending and descending altitude rapidly.
He turns to Galin and says, "Hey, wanna try some tricks?'
Then he begins to attempt a barrel roll, then maybe one of those Star-Fox 180s to throw someone off that could be on his tail. He will try to see what maneuverability he is truly capable of and how fast this thing can go.
Zeph thinks to himself, I can't wait to dogfight in this thing.

DM Cayzle - Rolls and Rolls Thursday January 13th, 2011 3:58:57 PM
Zeph, Galin, and Jet continue to practice with the magical aircart -- and your DM would find it easier to write about this thing if you all decided on a term to call it! Zeph feels confident that he can steer it while aloft with confidence, although it is still a little more than somewhat cramped. However, as he contemplates aerial combat against flying foes, he knows he will need to make some tricky rolls if he wants to make any tricky rolls. If only someone were woodworker enough to make the cockpit more accommodating to a person his size.
Zeph may remind his friends, or even himself, that the magic flying craft -- see what your DM means about what to call this thing -- can only be activated once per day, and requires continual concentration to fly. That means no breaks for poor Pilot Zeph, at least none that require a standard action. He thinks he could manage eight hours a day without problem, under normal, non-combat circumstances. The good news is that if Zeph's concentration is broken, the craft will gently land itself, as it did when the flier's last pilot was knocked unconscious.
Meanwhile, the thruls are sent off toward the sheltered valley of the Ahote with Galin's wife. They are sent off with the tokens and words they will need to prove that they are friends. That leaves Charek, Garret, and Alexi to pack up and prepare for the next part of your journey, a trip south to the Crying Woods. Keela, for her part, says goodbye to the thrul with a bit of relief, and then watches the sky, Feather Fall spell a-ready.
=====
Pathfinder conversion notes: For gold, please do not worry about selling your old gear, buying new gear, or the 10 percent surcharge usual at the Catacombs. Just pick out the stuff you want, and if the total value under the Pathfinder rules is under 23,500 gp, you are fine. Sure, you can "buy back" all your current gear, and then buy some more stuff if you have extra gold. Or you could trash every one of your possessions, buy a Mattock of the Titans for 23,348 gp, and still have 152 gp for walking-around money.
If you have any yuletide presents, lotto prizes, rewards from Jerry, sentimental items, seals, and so on, they are free. [Although, fair warning, I hear that old seals are going to expire sooner or later. You are warned!] Also, the flying craft and pilot license is a free party so long as you name the darn thing so I don't have to keep coming up with generic text constructions to describe it. You do have to buy normal equipment, including horses and mounts and tack and such gear. Everybody has a free week of trail rations, because I am so sweet and kind.
I'll be continuing to vet PC sheets and so on as time permits, and I will report errors and errata as I find them. For example, Alexi, that +1 shocking burst keen longsword is a +4 weapon equivalent [+1 base, +1 keen, +2 shocking burst]. As such, it has a base valuation over 32,000 gp -- more than the Mattock. So, um, you need to revise that. And Jet, yes, we do have to rejigger your legacy item. Assume it will be about the same percent, and work from there. We'll fix it sooner or later.
Thanks and apologies for lack of responsiveness from your beleaguered DM.

"Perhaps we should call her Avis," Keela says. "Or Birdie. Are we starting our journey today, or do we have more preparations to make?"

OOC: i wasn't sure how to figure out the value of the sword so I went with the most beneficial for me. That is, taking each value on it's own, then adding it up. +1 base is x, keen is x, and shoking burst, a +2 being x, then adding them up, x+x+x = y, which was lower than adding the +'s (for a +4 item) first. That is to say, 4 +1 items are a lot cheaper than 1 +4 item. :}
I'm puzzled a bit though. I was thinking that the 23,500gp was the total gp/PC we got for selling all the stuff from the Thrulls. So Alexi would have all his other stuff from before, plus the new stuff he buys with the 23,5k. Am I on the right track? Your post makes it sound like we start out with 23.5k and buy stuff. Say Alexi wants to keep his Heavy Mithril Shield, that would be subtracted from the 23.5K. and so forth.
DM Cayzle - Extra Thursday January 13th, 2011 9:41:01 PM
Very sorry for the confusion. Yes, your Total Wealth is 23,500. NOT 23,500 on top of what you already had. I explained it poorly. But per Pathfinder, a 7th level PC "should" have that much gold, so that's where I want you each to be.
(If you have a Legacy Item, you can boost your total net worth to 25,850, counting the item, but that's the reward that makes the Legacy Item worth it.)

Avis, LOL!

DM Cayzle - The Avis? An Avis? Friday January 14th, 2011 5:03:26 PM
The party watches the flight of the flying box -- with Galin alert for eyes -- and in the evening, talk turns to the subject of what to call it. Keela comes up with "Avis," which seems agreeable to all. Does that mean it is an avis? Or that it is the Avis?
Zeph suggests painting it blue and christening the avis with the name "The Blue Jay."
OOC: I hope to vet all PC sheets over the weekend and start a new module Monday morning.
Zeph 3.5 AC22 HP 32/42 Zeph Pathfinder HP 69 AC 23 Friday January 14th, 2011 6:12:59 PM
No no no. Not "The Blue Jay"
Just Blue Jay
its also the name of my car, a sky blue ford taurus. =)
But I like Avis as well. Its simple, yet sleek. Yeah. I like that a lot.
We can also paint the bottom sky blue and the top green like grass. So no matter which way you look at it, it looks like the background! What spells could do that... searching through the illusion and conjuration schools now. Minor Creation to conjure some paint?
Alexi: If you like dual wielding, I suggest looking at the Shield Bash line of feats. You can keep the AC and bash at the same time. Shield Mastery makes bashing better than attacking with a secondary weapon imo. Your AC would be like 9(full plate)+3dex(which will go up)+2shield+deflection+natural+dodge... they say pure Fighters are capable of some massive ACs. Just suggestions. =)

OOC: redid my purcharsed items. keeping most the same:
Start: 23,500 - value of items keeping = 6,393 Horseshoes of Speed_ 3,000 gp Belt of Giant Strength +2_ 4,000 sell Belt of Ishgarran +1 (2,000) Potion of Invisibility (3min)_ 300 5,300
6,393 - 5,300 = 1,030gp left over.

DM Cayzle - New Scene Tomorrow Monday January 17th, 2011 5:24:23 PM
Friends, I am waiting for feedback from Jerry on the new module, but either way I WILL have a DM post up bright and early tomorrow AM. Well, technically, the module started in Dec with the divination from the seer that set you on your current path ... tomorrow will start the second scene. I've cleaned up the archives, and will have a map for you tomorrow too. Thanks and sorry for the delay.
I continue to work on PC sheets. If you have not heard from me, I have not got to yours yet.
Jet Stormway (AC: 22/21/22 no dex, HP: 26/53) Tuesday January 18th, 2011 9:54:37 AM
In Jet's down time, he takes measurements of the craft and does a few drawings on adapting the craft to have a medium pilot instead of a small pilot. "We need to make sure the aerodynamics of Avis do not destabilize her forward propulsion. We might have to make the cargo area a bit bigger also. If we could capture another one of these, we could salvage the same materials, which would be a superior opportunity. It might also allow us to use a second Magical Triangle in the adaptation, where we can activate it twice instead of only once."
Galin HP 74/74 AC 27 Tuesday January 18th, 2011 11:08:03 AM

Garret Goodbarrel [AC:25/25/19 HP:44/44 Ki:9] PF Garret Tuesday January 18th, 2011 11:56:26 AM
Garret looks up to the skies and says, "Well, if another one heads our way, we will see about that. Remember the battle to get this one was not easy. But we have another path to travel at the moment. I hope that we will not see any of these crafts or more lizards any time soon."
Alexi (AC: 25/13, HP:66/66) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) Tuesday January 18th, 2011 12:42:51 PM
Alexi suggests building boxes with lids and attach them to the sides of the craft, on the outside, to be used for storage of gear and food. Two on each side could carry a fair amount of stuff.
"We need to know if this thing has a maximum weight capacity. We could carry rocks in those boxes and toss the rocks at enemies down below, all provided that this thing, er... Avis, can lift off with all the weight. I also suggest installing a small ballista at the back, where one can fire at enemies with greater distance than a regular bow."
Keela Tuesday January 18th, 2011 2:01:00 PM
Keela is a little puzzled. "Is there a reason we need to carry lots of cargo in Avis?" she asks. "We have perfectly good horses, who can carry rather a lot. I think it might be better to leave Avis as lightly burdened as possible, and just use her for scouting."
She thinks a moment. "If we want to attack out of her, it might be best just to have somebody with a bow, rather than a bunch of heavy rocks. But if we use her to attack, then our foes will attack her in return. And, as we've seen, she's kind of delicate."
