Seeing the wall of thorns disappear, the Aboleth maintaining the illusion of the pit also lets it disappear." Slavisss, drag your brother along until he feels better. Like I said before surface dwellers, this as just business. If you are now claiming this area of caverns we will find a new place to meet. No hard feelingssss. We will maintain a hold on your Dwarf's thoughts until we are out of sight, then his thoughts will be his own again. You understand, he may be angry. It is really better that way so he does not do anything rash." The Lizardman hands the box to one of the Aboleth and bodily lifts up the fighter and carrys him off with the Aboleth. Once they are in the water they quickly disappear. A moment or two after they are out of sight, Yanosh regains his ability to think for himself and feels no lingering traces of the mind control. The diggers are mostly unharmed, a bit beat up but not damaged, otherwise how could they be sold at top price? They are very happy to not be made slaves.

It really irks Tishe' to let the slavers go, but the workers are more important. She frowns and stomps around working out her frustration. She dismisses the Wall of Fire.
"Serilina, make sure there aren't any traps on the lock before we use the key."
"Let's search the place and see what treasure or clues we can find. And I am really interested in setting up here to meet the small man who buys slaves." Her eyes narrow in anticipation. "Yes I am."

Breathing a sigh of relief, Serillana appears again and starts to look around her to see if everyone is alright.
Serillana nods her head at Tishe' and moves off towards the cage to check if there are any traps to be found. (Perception 27) If she does find any, she then tries to disable the traps (Disable Device 41). Then noticing the prisoners, she looks to see if they are just workers or there are others in there as well. "Hey guys, we are here to help you guys out. It'll be a moment till we get you out of here. Did you see them do anything to the cage while you were in here?" Serillana says as soft and sweet as she can.
When she believes that she is in the clear she moves off towards Yanosh and asks "Should I open the lock since I was the one that thinks it's safe? You can do it if you want."

Snafu felt disgust at these Aboleth creatures and the thought of enslavement. Our paths will cross again... and on that day, there will be retribution for your crimes Snafu promised quietly.
Trying to focus on the positive, Snafu went over to inspect the workers health. "Is everyone okay" he asked. "I have food, water, and a blanket. Pease take what you need."
Turning to Tishe, he continued, "I would very much like to meet this Small Man also. My fear is he will be driven into hiding if the rescue of the workers becomes public knowledge. But, to keep the workers here any longer than necessary seems so unfair... unless, there was a way we could make them more comfortable?"
Pondering this thought, Snafu moved to help Serillana inspect for traps (perception 34; DD 41), while he placed Hoot on watch in the shadows.

Tishe' (AC 26 HP 53/73)(Barkskin) Tuesday January 4th, 2011 5:08:29 PM
Tishe' confers with her packmates as Yanosh and Serellina take care of the workers. "I don't think the rescue of the workers will scare away the Little Man. From what the fish-monsters said, this was a monthly rendevous to exchange whatever people they had. We should have one chance at this slaver tomorrow and still let the workers out."
"That said, I think we should escort them back to the surface to make sure the fish-monsters haven't planned any ambush between here and the surface. And then..." Here the woman pauses and considers the spells she has under her control.
"Alter Self and Polymorph will not allow me to look like a fish-monster. Snafu or Falmar, do you have any illusions that can make such an appearance? If not, we will have to be very alert to trap our quarry before he sniffs out our ambush."
DM David--- Emergence --- Tuesday January 4th, 2011 5:51:49 PM Serillana inspects the Manacles used to hold the captives in place against the wall and finds no traps on them. ( I was sure when I restarted it I said manacles instead of a cage, but that doesn't really matter....8) moving on) As stated before they are beat up, a few black eyes and bruises but no major damage. They say that the Lizardman healer tended them after they had been subdued. They desperately want to go home and see their loved ones, but understand if the heroes want them to stay here so that they can assist in catching this 'small man' ( remember the conversation was mostly held in common)
Various ideas are thrown about for catching the 'small man' when he arrives.
Tishe says she has no illusion spells that will do the trick and asks the other casters if they do.
Snafu seethes at letting them go, swaering to find them on different terms at a later date.
Yanosh is sullen and angry about having been used to heal the Lizardman.
Thar declares the prisoners healthy and capable of returning to the surface.
Falmar is informed that several VERY large fish swam past and kept going without surfacing. One of them looked like a lizard that was carrying another lizard. Moxy thinks that was odd, and wants to know when he will again be fed. He is NOT an underground dwelling bird and this place makes him uneasy. He is sure SOMETHING is out there waiting to eat him.
As the trapping the 'small man' discussion is held one of the diggers with barely a scruff of a beard on his chin tentatively steps up to the heroes and says " Me and the lads talked it over, and we want ta stay and help catch this slaver. We know you are upset," A quick glance at Yanosh," about letting those fish slavers go and we want to make it up to you. We can rig a deadfall snare at the mouth of the cavern, where you would step out and dry off when you entered. The fishes were discussing putting a fire over there for the small man. I dunno if that is normal or not, but it sounds right. If he hates gettin wet a fire would be the first thing he would want, right? Plenty of people here in the valley have gone missing. If this helps find them then we want to help." He stands there looking at his heroes, hoping they will include the diggers in their plan.
OOC Hi guys, sorry about yesterday. I informed Jerry that once the module ended I wouldn't be able to keep DMing and he cut off my posting privileges right away. Anyway its all good now. To answer some questions above, Yes we are now in pathfinder, use that system for your skills and spells. You will have the time to rest before the small man arrives, so you will be on your Pathfinder spell list when he does. DO NOTE... some spells changed level and some spells were added/deleted. use the SRD to be sure your spells are right. http://www.d20pfsrd.com/ is the link for the SRD.
I should have done this sooner but I wasn't paying enough attention. Please forgive me. I would like your next post to contain your old xp total and your character wealth RIGHT NOW. We have been given the option to bring the whole party to a single xp point and use that xp point as a wealth marker. What this means is you will almost certainly gain money and possibly a level for the conversion. It is a godsend for games like this one and the game I play in that were put together from separate games. List me those totals and I will get you rolling in the right direction.
DM David--- Emergence --- Tuesday January 4th, 2011 7:01:19 PM
OOC Ok, good news. Dai had previously asked you for the stuff I just asked you for and made a table of it for us to use that I forgot about. Once this part of the module is over ( the halfling slaver part) You will all go to the xp and wealth for a 13th level character. That is 140000 gp and 315000 xp. That will give you a new even starting point and set you up with a fair amount of wealth to spend on character improvement. The xp is for the module up to this point, the cash we can consider coming from the slaver and being distributed to even you all out.

Tishe' is moved that the workers want to help and perhaps get a share of danger in order to help everyone in Cinamon Valley. "What black handed Walkers you all are", she says shaking her head in thankful wonder, "the night's soil! I am proud to help a community that produce good people like you."
The witch thinks hard, and looks to her packmates for advice. "I don't like the idea of the deadfall, since the little man could spot it. But I think the fire is a really good idea. It will put the far side of the cavern in shadows. Did you notice that the fish-monsters stayed in the background and let the lizardfolk do all the stuff? While I can't disguise us like fish-monsters, I CAN disguise us like lizardfolk."
Tishe' waits, then continues. "The little man gets out of the water, starts drying himself by the fire while the lizardfolk slaves wait on him. Then a Wall of Thorns seals the passage and we've captured a slave captain!"
Serillana (AC 29 HP 55/85) Wednesday January 5th, 2011 1:14:23 AM
"Great to know that you are willing to help us even more. You guys are amazing!" Serillana says to the freed prisoners.
"A controlled trap might be the best course of action, but will the little man be coming on his own? There is a good chance that he will bring guards and the like to keep them in line? Better to be safe than sorry right?" Serillana thinks out loud, and then suddenly remembers the rogues that she had spotted. "And what are we going to do with the bodies that have been left behind? I wonder if they were less important or were going to be the ones helping the little man out? I don't know.... Just trying to fill out the blanks...."

"And the fire idea is perfect. Snafu thinks it'll work like a charm."

Thar listens to the plan and at the right time, says, "Well, we could hide the bodies that are left behind or bury them. I don't want to desecrate them, but a bunch of new burial spots might raise the little man's suspicion. Regarding a trap, it's more important to me to keep the dwarf and his allies from escaping, and I'm not worried about our ability to handle them. We don't want him tipped off in any way and a trap might do that."
He rubs his chin and says, "I like Tishe's idea of making us look like lizardfolk and blocking the exit with a wall of thorns. I could summon some help to help block their way out, and then we focus on finishing off the problem once for all. I'm not in the mood to be merciful to the slaver..."
To the dwarf, he warmly thanks him for the offer of help and says, "We could use any help you'd like to offer friend."

Falmar picks up a pair of shackles and looks around.
" The important thing here is finding out what the little man does with those he takes, and what happens to them there. We still have a young girl in a small cell to find...Everything depends on what we can get him to tell us...if anything. that's the pick here.. He will need to be brought in alive so that justice can be done. He must pay for his crimes, and be used as an example to others that this will no longer be tolerated. It is true that we have been given the authority to act as the hand of authority in this matter, but given an opportunity the people of the Valley need to see that justice...true justice has been served."
Falmar places his hand upon the woven circle of Sargrass about his neck, then turns to Tishe'
"unfortunately I cannot disguise any of us, but If someone has some rope I could perhaps hide those of us who cannot become disguised. I could also help one of us to breathe underwater, and allow them another place to hide."
DM David--- Emergence --- Wednesday January 5th, 2011 9:39:01 PM
The diggers regroup and talk amongst themselves as the heroes talk of how to catch the 'small man'. There are some wild gesticulations and a bit of scrawling, probably of some schematic, in the dirt. Finally the younger dwarf, the nervous one from before returns and speaks. " Some of you must understand engineering and traps, especially the way that pretty lass looked over the locks before she opened them. Come have a look at what we have in mind. With the tools and gear we have with us we are confident we can make this deadfall work and make it look like part of the cavern."
He draws you over to the drawing where the digger's team foreman says," OK, see here, we use the fire to lure him inside the rope loop under some of the loose sand by the waters edge. once at least one foot is inside it we drop the weight and the pulleys we were gonna use to set up your water up top pull him off his feet and hang him up. You guys make your wall like you did before to seal the room and hes as good as caught. Then you get to talk to him for however long you want. We know you are the law in this matter. Wilhemina made that clear when we hired on. " He stops for a moment, collects his thoughts and plunges on." Look, we heard about the folks gone missing the past couple months. We helped a good number o' them put in their wells and build their foundations when they made their farms. They are decent folk and these slavers are rubbish. Let us help ye strike a blow for the Valley on this one. Whatd'ya say?" The whole team looks on expectantly, waiting for the heroes to make the final tweaks to what they see as a good start. looking at the bumps and bruises they have suffered you have little doubt they would like a few 'words' with the 'small man' as well.
Snafu - AC 27, HP 93/93 (+14 HP), Haste, Mirror image, Pro Evil Thursday January 6th, 2011 9:31:19 AM
"Sounds like a plan to me!" Snafu said, obviously loving the idea.
"I have a couple disguise scrolls I can use for anyone not skilled at hiding." Snafu said. "I for one would like to find a hiding spot near the trap. That way, if little man knows any magic, I'll be nearby to attempt to disrupt his casting."
Tishe' (AC 26 HP 53/73)(Barkskin) Thursday January 6th, 2011 12:09:18 PM
Tishe' grins, wanting to encourage the workers to take an active part in the valley's own defense. "An excellent plan. You make the deadfall. Falmar and Seralina, you make the shackles and rope bindings for the workers and ... Snafu and Yanosh I think. Seralina hides herself away in the back cavern shadows. I alter myself to be a lizardfolk, and then polymorph Falmar and Thar to be more lizardfolk."
"When the trap goes off, I will cast Wall of Thorns to completely seal the exit. Falmar and Thar are the first wave to take care of any guards. Yanosh, you ensure the workers are safe from any enemy. And Snafu and Serilina are our reserves; go where you are needed."
She looks around proudly at all the ideas, preparation, and determination. "Remember, our aim is to capture in order to get more information. Let's be about it!"
Thar ail Baerer (Ken M), 70/97 hps, MCvE, Thar Thursday January 6th, 2011 2:56:39 PM
Thar agrees with the plan but adds a caution, saying, "I'll be ready to bring in some help to fight the guards. However, my strength isn't in melee combat and I'm best at skewering them with arrows from afar, and healing whoever needs it... "
DM David--- Emergence --- Thursday January 6th, 2011 3:42:08 PM
Notes on your character conversions, I looked at skills today.
Thar, you only gain the +3 for a class skill if you put ranks in the skill. Basically you must have some training in it to get the bonus
Tishe, you get a +3 bonus on class skills you have trained in. You don't have any additions like that as far as I can see. (see Thar's comment above)
Snafu, Tedious as it may be, you might want to put all the skills on your sheet. Alot can be used untrained and you don't want to be scrambling to find your modifier if you suddenly need to make a check. Otherwise yours look fine.
Falmar, Same as Thar, you need to have trained in a skill to get the +3 for a class skill. Also it is a good idea to do the math for anyone checking over your sheet and for your own sanity later as to how many skill points you have. The more classes the more of a pain that is but it helps, especially if you have to level and get interrupted and come back and ask yourself " did I add my skill points?"
Nice Job Serillana, you even picked out your headband skills separately so that if you lose the headband you know which skill is affected.
Yanosh, I don't see a sheet for you yet. You had mentioned you were having trouble converting a few days ago. If it is a problem I need to know so I can help you. Jerry wants to know who isn't converted by tomorrow and they can't post until it is done. Here is the lifesaver ring, grab it and I'll pull you in. My googledocs account is under dfeest@frontiernet.net. I never check that email as it is a spam dump but if you need help give me edit privileges so I can make a copy and get you a draft. Then give me a link to the sheet.
Once everyone has posted I'll put out a DM post tonight. It looks like the plan is set, just make sure I have it all ready and you can rest the night.
Tishe' (AC 26 HP 53/73)(Barkskin) Thursday January 6th, 2011 4:50:22 PM
ooc: I didn't specifically show the +3 for trained skills, but it was calculated in there already. I've adjusted my CS to show the +3 for trained skills now.
Tishe' nods at Thar. "Very good then, to each his own weave. You pretend you are a prisoner and defend the workers with your bow and healing spells, and Yanosh will be a pretend lizardfolk and be able to bash any guards with his axe."
DM David--- An Ambush of Their Own --- d20+8=19 ; d20+8=10 ; d20+8=26 ; d20+8=20 ; d20+18=35 ; Thursday January 6th, 2011 7:02:59 PM
The plan seemingly decided, the diggers move to the back of the room to gather their tools. Once if full harness they head over to the edge of the water and begin work. Looking carefully at the landing, they determine where a fire has been placed before and heap the fuel brought in by the slavers up. They then dig a shallow trench for the rope and one Dwarf, you notice it is the youngest one again, begins scaling the wall. With surprising skill he drives in a piton to hold the pulley system and feeds rope through the pulleys down to his kin. They set about making the trap and camouflaging it. Two more dwarves climb up to a shelf of rock that you never would have noticed had they not climbed to it. On that shelf rests a large rock that after some dispute is rigged as the counterweight to the trap. They then motion for Serillana to come up to where they have set the trap and show her how to trip it. They think that with her skill in stealth and ability to spot and disarm traps she makes the perfect catalyst for it and will be hidden as the plan suggested.
A volunteer is selected and the trap is tested. The test subject is whipped up off the ground as if an anti-gravity spell were cast on him and in the end hangs stunned at the top of the trap's run. Apparently, the trap whips the prey up so fast that it actually smacks them in the head hard enough to daze a dwarf. The trap is reset and the Dwarves ask the heroes for their seal of approval.
(wow, some nice engineering rolls by the diggers I set the DC to build it at 15, 4 Dwarves assisted the foreman and all were successful. I decided that each +5 on the roll above the DC would add 2 to the perception roll to spot the trap and 1 to the DC to disarm it. Your final trap needs a 28 perception to spot and a 24 disable to disarm)
Assuming they get the ok, the Dwarves head back where they were held prisoner and curl up to get some rest by the fire. They put the manacles on to appear as prisoners should the small man arrive while they sleep.
The party can sleep by turns if that is what you prefer. Will there be a lookout while you sleep? Will there be a lookout outside the room ( the owl perhaps?) to signal the approach of the small man? Relearn your spells Pathfinder style and give me whatever other preparations you make and a rough idea where you are.
The room is 100 feet deep, 50 feet across, and 35 feet to the ceiling. In the north end is where the prisoners were held, that end has a fire burning. The south end has an alcove that extends an additional 15 feet south and is filled with water, growing deeper as you go further south. You have placed a fire on the eastern side of the south end, next to the water. The snare is where someone would logically stand after stepping from the water to dry off.

After things are set and the workers and heroes are settled down with an evening meal, Tishe' volunteers for the last watch. "I can sleep and then renew my connection with Sargrass first thing in the morning.", she tells the others.
Once Hoot notifies Snafu of the approach of beings, Tishe' will get to work. An Alter Self for Tishe' allows her to look like a lizardfolk sorcerer. Two polymorph spells bring Yanosh to look like a lizardfolk cleric and Falmar like a lizardfolk fighter (not a big stretch for either of them). The fickle Ley Lines shift and jump from Tishe's grasp and she has to cast the spells over again, using more spell slots than originally anticipated.
After that, it is waiting for the Little Man and Seralina springing the trap.

Before sleeping Falmar leaves the cavern to console Moxy with some humks of meat, and some stimulating bird related conversation. He assures Her that She is doing a good job, and that it will only be less than a Day and we will be back in the daylight. As Falmar returns to the cavern he takes some time to clean off a large green-white stain from his surcoat...a possible indication of Moxy's feelings about all of this cave exploring.
Falmar sleeps early and rises early, resting soundly in the knowledge that all of the Dwarves are also there to help keep watch.

The heroes rest and prepare for the small man. Time is hard to tell down here but the diggers assure the heroes that night has fallen above ground. If the small man were trying to get down here from above as the Aboleth said, nighttime would be the best time with the added activity on the surface. Tense moments of waiting become an hour, then two hours, then Falmar sits up straighter.
Moxy sees something in the cavern outside. Creatures bigger then the familiar. More than one handful, less then two handfuls. The familiar feels fear as some of the creatures look around, as if searching for prey. Finally one of the creatures moves to the pool and goes under. Falmar gets a quick impression of Serillana and then its gone.
The preparations have been made and the die has been cast. The small man has seemingly come to collect his slaves. A figure breaks the surface of the water and splutteringly stands up. It looks deep into the cave and calls to the Aboleth it expects to meet, for the moment ignoring the Lizardmen before it. " Still playing with your illusions ye great fishy freaks. It's Harlan as yer darned pets spell surely told ye. Drop your illusions and lets deal. There's some kinda building going on topside and ol' Harlan wants to be clear of this place before it gets light." As he speaks he mutters something under his breath. (spellcraft roll if you are near the water, otherwise it is too far away to hear.) Jets of air swirl around him and he is suddenly clean and dry. Knowing how cold the water is you still are not surprised to see him step over to the fire....coming to rest in the sweet spot where the trap has been laid." I said I haven't got alot of time. I see your stock back there and I have the price to but them, now are we dealing or have you wasted my time."
5 minutes have passed since Moxy saw the group enter the cave and alerted Falmar. 5 rounds total have passed since the halfling broke the surface of the water and stepped up onto land. Now is the first round that he has been in the capture area of the trap.

As Serillana hides (Stealth 38) as the time has now come to see if the plan works. Noting that the man now known as Harlan had dried off using magic, she thinks back at Taldera's and other spells that she has come across to figure if the spell was anything special (assuming i'm somewhere near the water, on a ledge? And she doesn't wait long! As soon as the deadfall falls, the lizardfolk witch drops the sticks from her arms and calls out the magical words to weave the Wall of Thorns (directly on top of the deadfall).
She then glides next to the halfling, her hands turning into thorny knots. "Harlan, surrender. The tables are turned and you are our prisoner!"

Serillana,Snafu and Tishe all recognize the cantrip prestidigitation as Harlan uses it to clean up after his swim. Snafu makes note that the halfling uses no components, though none are required for a cantrip. Serillana and Tishe further are able to make out the language the words are spoken in Highlight to display spoiler: {Infernal}
Serillana is the trigger and as the slaver steps into the trap she springs it. There is a loud ZZZIIIIPPP!!! sound as the rope is drawn through the pulleys and with a surprised scream Harlan is hoisted toward the ceiling. There is a meaty THUD and a startled WHUFF as Halran hits the ceiling. Dangling at the end of the rope is a thoroughly stunned slaver. Tishe then throws up a wall of thorns across the waterline to prevent the slaver's escape. Snafu bounds from his hiding place casting a spell of his own and touches the slaver. The halfling's body immediately freezes and he begins to smell like a week old body dug from the grave. Tishe activates her wooden fists and glides up to the halfling just as the spell from Snafu takes effect ( fort save DC 15 Tishe). Her words choked off as the smell hits her and brings her gorge up. Falmar stands back and shouts threats at the stunned and paralyzed halfling slaver. Thar throws a warding circle around the workers in an effort to protect them in case the slaver is not subdued.
The diggers however do not stay in the circle Thar has provided for them. Seeing their trap sprung and working totally like they anticipated they surge forward, brandishing the shackles they once wore, ready to slap them on the slaver. They cover the ground as if possessed and end up just outside the ring of smell at the end of their round.
Harlan, paralyzed, and stunned from his collision with the roof, hangs rigid from a rope snare. His head is four feet above the ground and is rapidly growing a nice bump where it hit the top of the cavern.
Moxy states that the group in the cavern has done nothing new. Two still patrol the area, the rest sit by the water.
OOC Lets stay in rounds. Clearly the Dwarves plan to tackle, grapple, knee, kick, pummel, bite and probably shackle the slaver next round. Provided they are not lying on the ground puking their breakfast up. Harlan, for the moment is totally incapacitated. ( roll a duration Snafu for the Ghoul touch. I know it is longer than he will live if you all have the mind to kill him 8) but timing may matter )

"Best to stay back" Snafu said. "This fella smells like he made yesterday's dinner in his pants, Plus, he won't be able to move. Toss me the shackles... I can bind him and spare you the stench, which is more than a little discomforting."
"Also, we need some brave souls with good peepers to keep an eye on the water. This Slaver scum may have friends that come looking for him and we need to be ready. Good dwarves, would you be kind enough to perform this task? I promise to give you the opportunity to... ummm... question him in due time. Meanwhile, I will remove all of his equipment, shackle him and leave him hanging." (diplomacy check- 28)
Snafu then disengaged his haste boots, while removing any and all weapons and equipment from the Slaver (including spell components pouch, if he has one).

DM David--- An Ambush of Their Own --- Tuesday January 11th, 2011 1:33:08 AM
The Dwarves stop short when Tishe falls down, retching. If a great adventurer fell prey... but they were Dwarves and... reluctantly they all hand their shackles to Snafu. " Best you do it lad, if he did that to her... we're just sappers, not heroes." Two of the Dwarves group around Tishe, protectively, and the other three scan the writhing wall of thorns for intruders they don't expect to see. They look glum, like someone that knows they have been given busywork when there is real work to be done.
Snafu Takes 1 round to shackle the Halfling, and 2 more pulling all his pouches, bags and weapons off of him and tossing them in a pile. Thar covers the Halfling, while Tishe looks like she would rather just pass out than vomit any more. Serillana looks conflicted between Tishe's words and Thar's. Yanosh stares blankly at the Halfling. Falmar contemplates luring more of the group into the cavern.... If only he could get out to them.
Snafu notes he is clearly a caster and that he seems to carry no components. He does carry 3 large pouches and a rather ornate dagger. He is richly dressed and well groomed. Well, he was well groomed.

"He'll be no help if he is left up there hanging upside down. We can show him that he is still a prisoner without him hanging about. Well, he is a magic user, so gag him or better yet bluff that there is an anti-magic field so that he doesn't lose the power of speech. "You did very well, my black handed Walkers", she tells the sappers, "it's like you didn't even need us to help you capture the villian."
"Falmar, you keep us posted through Moxy as to what Harlan's guards are doing"
"Thar, stop threatening the paralyzed sorcerer. He's not going anywhere. In fact, he's going to be a great help to us." A dry heave sets Tishe's eyes watering before she continues. "Won't you, Harlan the Slaver?"
Snafu - AC 32, HP 121/121 (+11) False Life, Heroism d20+22=25 ; Tuesday January 11th, 2011 1:59:43 PM
Snafu methodically removed all the slavers equipment and bags.
"Oh why not?" he called out, as he continued by removing his boots, and... "Cover your eyes ladies" he joked, as he removed his pants as well.
All the while he spoke calmly to the slaver- "Now, we're going to ask you some questions. If you lie, we will know and the result will be most unpleasant for you. If you try anything funny, one of my friends will likely cut you in two, so it's best that you don't get any ideas. Your any chance for a pleasant outcome is if you tell us everything. Understand?" (diplomacy 25).
Snafu shackled and gagged the halfing, cast a quick detect magic spell, and scanned over all of the Slaver's equipment. "Now when I'm done with this" Snafu muttered as he concentrated on his spell, "I am going to remove your gag and you are going to tell us everything. Serillana tries to console the dwarves and succeeds in getting a few grinning happily and more than one blushing at her compliments.
Thar continues to watch the halfling's every non-move and yell at him as if he could hear or respond.
Tishe also compliments the sappers and tries to control her stomach. She makes the few near her proud even though the meaning of her phrase Black handed Walkers is almost completely lost on them. A few wipe their dirty hands on their equally dirty tunics though.
Snafu continues stripping the prisoner, right down to his flowered boxers. He manages to stuff a rag in the halfling's mouth and get all of the shackles on just before the stench and paralysis wear off. When it does Harlan raises his shackled hands to his throbbing head and winces. He glares at the group with an intensity that would light a wet pile of rags on fire.
Snafu finds that a great deal of the slaver's gear is magical. The small bags all contain wealth of one kind or another. ( I am not detailing his gear. This is the loot that'll be sold to bring you all even at the start of Pathfinder. )

How are we getting out of here ? if we wait will they come in to check things out ?, take a couple at a time ? That lightning in the water trick was nice....have to remember that one...

Though weakened, Tishe' stands and comes closer to Harlan (but still outside the terrible smell). There, she sets down her cauldron and causes it to grow until it is the size of a person. Having done that, she now ignores her cauldron for the slaver.
Turning her eyes and magics upon Harlan, the witch casts a Charm Person spell. (Will DC 19 or become friend and ally of Tishe') Harlan gets +5 to save since he is currently threatened.
If the first Charm fails, Tishe' will attempt to Charm him up to 6 more times (6 more saves at Will Dc 19) in order to get him on her side.
Once a Charm succeeds, Tishe' will look sympathetically at Harlan. "You are in a mess, my friend, and I want to help you out. Turning to the other PC's, he asks, "So how do we get past those guarding the water. Should I summon an alligator or something like that and have it attack them first while we come out quickly behind? Or should we have Harlan, if charmed, help convince his friends that we mean no harm...?"
Serillana (AC 29 HP 55/85) Wednesday January 12th, 2011 6:35:59 PM
"Let's see how this pans out first. It could just mean we wait a little longer, they realize that something is wrong and then the either come to us. or just leave because they were told to if something happened. But the alligator sounds alright as well..." Serillana replies to Thar.
Serillana tries not to look at her fellow Halfling, but she does not fell sorry for him. She listens in just in case he blurts something out in a different language, but other than that looks at the group.

Later, when given the opportunity to discuss strategy privately, Snafu suggests the following course of action.
"What if Snafu and three other stealthy types teleported just beyond the entrance" he suggested. "We could cause some kind of distraction, which will make it easier for the rest of you to get out without being sitting ducks."

Falmar contemplates what to do about the others in the outer cavern. He pulls a cloth out, wets it from his water skin since the water is blocked by a wall of thorns and tosses it to Tishe.
Tishe decides that Harlan should become her friend. She casts Charm Person spells to make it so.
Thar contemplates violence against those in the outer cavern.
Serillana adds her thoughts to how to deal with the others in the slaver's group.
Snafu watches Harlan prepared to paralyze him again if he misbehaves.
Harlan continues to look at Tishe, as she casts spell after spell. Mostly, his fear at being held captive stops the desire to be her friend from taking hold. That and he doesn't have friends that tie him up. When she finishes he sighs and continues to stare at her, every now and then shifting his mouth to move the gag to a less uncomfortable position. She speaks to him, asking what he hopes are rhetorical questions since he cannot answer them. He has seen the look that the half-elf is giving him before. That doesn't make him feel good, the ' I am faster than you are and can beat you to the punch' look. In the end he waits to see what his captors do, as a slim trickle of blood runs from his damaged forehead down into his face..

With the magical charm not working, Tishe' has to resort to other methods. "Snafu, you are pretty good at explaining the situation in nice terms to Harlan. (ie roll a Diplomacy check) Why don't you see if he is willing to give us some information in exchange for his life?"

DM David--- An Ambush of Their Own --- Friday January 14th, 2011 11:38:28 AM
OOC You do NOT have the box. That was their stuff and it left with them. It wasn't in your negotiation except that you didn't want the sorcerer to open it. Their gear is all primitive weapons and shield that you would expect from a tribal lizard man. They may have been working with the Aboleth but the fish creatures had no attachment to them other than their ability to carry things. Like it was said, they were 'pets' Like I stated with Harlan's gear, it will be the amount you need to bring you to the 13th level wealth teir. I put a value up a week or so ago, I can look back and get it again for you. It was 140000 gp. You will all rasie your wealth to that so that you are even. For some of you that may be alot, for others not so much. Likewise you will all go to 315000 xp 13th level, middle track. Again to start you all out even. The Dwarves are not interested in the primitive weapons of the lizard men. They each have a tool of their own handy. At Harlan's claims of mistaken identity though they are less certain that they have the right captive. Remembering how they were ambushed a couple of them look downright ashamed to have bushwhacked him. " Maybe he's right. we don't know that HE is the one the Aboleth talked about. And they had that box of stuff that could have been for him. Maybe we were to be sold to someone else."

OOC a note on the Bluff skill.
Granted you as players know that Harlan is the guy you are after. I have said it before and it all fits. But when an NPC actually MAKES a superior roll to save its bacon the least you can do when you fail is go along with it to some extent. Maybe you are still skeptical, but failing the roll by more than 10 and just saying" I don't believe a word of what you are saying " is poor roleplaying. What if he was innocent as your rolls suggest you might think he is? Would you still threaten him, prepare to break a few bones? What would the Dwarves standing behind you think of that since he has convinced them he is innocent? What if the DM decides to do that while you are bluffing for your lives? Bravo to those that failed their rolls and manned up to it and played along. As it turns out someone almost always makes the check ( Falmar in this case) and points out the obvious flaws in the argument which is also great for the plot. Now Harlan knows that at least one of you knows he is lying rather than just suspecting it.
Unfortunately that dispel will not be high enough to remove the suggestion, but at least you know whats going on. Thw MCvE should supress the Suggestion long enough to convince Serillana that she has been fooled.

Tishe' isn't the best judge of character, nor does she normally question the information that she's been given. Thus, she completely misses any byplay between Harlan and Serilina.

Serillana seems moved by the plea to 'let him go' and moves behind Harlan to loosen his chains.
Falmar senses a con in progress and warns Serillana. Then he see it for what it is and tries to dispel the magic cast on the halfling sharpshooter. His dispel fails to break Harlan's spell.
Thar however manages to bring Serillana into the magic circle of protection and her head clears for a moment. She gets that " What was I doing...?" type feeling. He is unable to reconcile the two stories being told and still feels there is something wrong with this fellow.
Snafu demands details about the merchants supposed transactions.
Tishe keeping a level head can't verify guilt or innocence and moves that an audience with the Pitchfork Council might be in order.
" That sounds like a right fine idea lass. Lets go see the Pitchfork Council. Lincoln and Hildy will set this right. Question is will I see them before or after yon tough beats me to look like yesterdays roast!?" Pointing with his chin at Thar. Then his gaze swivels to Snafu. " Do all merchants in the Valley need to see you before they make a transaction good sir!? Need to explain their transactions in full for your approval!? Seems like you would be a very busy half elf then wouldn't you?" Finally his gaze tries to rest on Serillana behind his back." At least this kind lass, this fellow halfling was trying to loosen my chains a bit and provide me some comfort, only to be told she was a dupe by one of her friends! Just who are you people!?" Harlan seems to tense, leaning forward to hear the answer to his latest question. Having been given the opportunity to talk he now seems to want to argue almost every possible point.

"Yeah... Right... Fellow Halfling. Hah!" Serillana says quietly, making sure that Harlan understands that they are the same in stature but not in apparent friendship that he expects her to have with him.

"..." Tishe' makes an abortive attempt to stop Falmar, but the packmate is already moving, and the pattern already woven. "The evidence against Harlan is great", the witch says instead. "The aboleth were only here with kidnapped workers and no other commodity. Harlan was secretive when he came here, worried about the construction above, so why would the exchange require secrecy if not illegal? Also, there are the guards in the next room. We detain them, and I'll bet we find slaver equipment."
Privately, Tishe' is worried that Harlan knows some of the names of the Pitchfork Council. Are they known protectors of Harlan and his activities? Or is the halfling trying to sew dissonance? The witch shakes her head; thier are plenty of questions in Cinnamon Valley, but all too few answers!
To get her mind on practicalities, she tries to organize her friends. "Falmar and Yanosh, you subdue and bind Harlan. He will remain gagged and bound until we get to the Pitchfork Council."
"Seralina, Snafu, Thar and I will prepare to go to the other cavern and round up Harlan's meat-shields. Snafu, can you Dim Door you and three others to the entrance of the other cavern so we can cut off their escape route?"

Snufu was caught off guard with the sudden exchange and found himself questioning if his actions were truly justified. However, another voice inside him was still setting off warning bells given what had been learned from the Aboleths.
Being well versed in magic, Snafu was also well aware of the power of enchantment magic. With that in mind, Snafu paused for a moment to reflect and study the entire exchange for any signs of magical use (Spellcraft check 36).
Next Snafu responded to Tishe- "I do not have dimension door, but I can certainly teleport some of us outside. Perhaps it would be best if I brought those of us that wear armor first, so nobody is caught with their armor down."
DM David--- An Ambush of Their Own --- Monday January 17th, 2011 4:29:20 PM
Watching Thar, his obvious assailant who talks of cracking his bones, Harllan is caught off guard by Falmar's swift blows. He cries out once and then goes limp and silent after the second blow, lying motionless on the floor. He now bleeds from broken skin on both sides of his forehead.
Serillana finds no comfort in Harlan's comparison of the two of them. She sits quietly while the other halfling is beaten down.
Bloodthirsty, Thar is not happy with merely seeing Harlan knocked out. He taunts the halfling with threats to prolong the beating by repeatedly healing him as he is tortured.
Tishe attempts to stay Falmar's hand but is too late, she fails to stop the second blow as well, but rationalizes Harlan's activities to make him guilty in her mind.
Snafu searches through his memory of the encounter. He is not comfortable with beating the man down and searches his thoughts for other things Harlan may have done to wrong them. He found the halflings reasoning for being here reasonable, if shady in light of the Aboleth's story. He also found his request to be released at once reasonable, though not nearly so reasonable as Serillana had. Had there been magic there? Maybe, but he couldn't be sure.
The Dwarves, now convinced that Harlan might not be the man the Aboleth spoke of gasp in unison when Falmar hits the halfling repeatedly with the pommel of his sword. They stand silently as the heroes make plans to deal with the unknown group in the next room.
If asked Moxy reports that the group still sits quietly by the water, occasionally looking around. Mostly they watch the water where Harlan disappeared.
Tishe' (AC 26 HP 53/73)(Barkskin) d100=79 ; Monday January 17th, 2011 5:58:10 PM
Tishe' turns to the dwarfs. "There is only one reason for this man to come here, urging speed because of the construction above-ground. There was only one reason for the Aboleth to keep you all in the cage here; slaves. The halfling is a spell caster, and the best way to keep him from mischief is to keep him unconscious." She tries to convey action of her companions is necessary to get to the bottom of the problem. "We will take all of this to the Pitchfork Council and abide by thier judgement."
She frowns at Thar, noting that he is a more aggressive person than she is used to travelling with. going to have to find the words to ease his anger she thinks to herself.
"We need Falmar and Yanosh to stay here with Harlan and the dwarves", she replies to Snafu, "so the teleportation must be with Thar, Serelina, and myself with you."
"Snafu, you cast the spell to put us in the cavern covering the entrance to the surface."
"Thar, do not shoot, but cover the guards with your bow, striking only if they attack us."
"Serilina, move into the shadows, ready to bind thier hands if they give up or to strike in the flank if they attack."
"I will bring forth an animal ally and call on them to surrender immediately. If they throw down thier weapons, we capture. If they fight, try and keep at least one alive to question."
She looks around at the freedom fighters. "OK, let's weave!"
Ready: Tishe' waits with a bag in her hand for Snafu to teleport and then immediately brings forth a Heavy Warhorse to stand inbetween the two groups.
Thar, AC 26, 105/105 hps, MCvE, Monday January 17th, 2011 6:44:31 PM
Thar takes a moment and binds the halflings wounds, not doing any more damage and content with the message that Falmar sent the halfling.
Getting up, he sees Tishe's frown and tries to explain his methods to his new companions. "With my old group, this was a strategy we often used, sort of a good elf, bad elf routine. Though we'd make threats, I wouldn't actually go through with them, and it was usually only used when we interrogated prisoners that might have carried out heinous deeds, like this halfling. I'm not really bloodthirsty and I wouldn't really do those things, but I don't want him to know that.... I know I'm new to this group, and I at least wanted to explain why I said those things."
He pauses, thinks for a moment and adds, "I'm a bit impatient at times with evil creatures, but I do try to do the right thing. It's a tough road I walk, balancing between my good nature as a healer, and the righteous judgment that I feel I'm called to carry out vs. evil creature. Either way, you can count on me as a faithful team member."
To Tishe', he agrees to keeps his bow ready, and hold his fire unless they're attacked...
Once they're teleported, he remains still, not firing unless provoked...

Falmar goes a bit pale as Thar threatens torture upon the halfling...but recovers a bit at his explanation.
Looking at the group...and at the Dwarves
" What I just did I did not do lightly. while everyone was having a chat, he was using what powers he had against us. We are not here to interrogate him, we are here to save all of you, and anything he else can tell us is shady. If diplomacy works, all the better, but in this case it was not working. He will fully recover to stand trial for this will happen. Unconscious he is less of a threat and we have other things to worry about. First is getting you out and back to your families, second is getting ourselves out, and the last thing we are are after is the word of this white handed slaver, for that IS what he is and You are what he was here for.
Falmar then moves to check to be sure that Harlan is actually unconscious. (Heal check ? 22)
Serillana (AC 29 HP 55/85) Tuesday January 18th, 2011 3:09:14 AM
When Serillana is called up upon, she gets up slowly and carefully, her head kept low looking at the ground. Knowing that Harlan is the bad guy here, but still wondering if they really had to do that, she's still a little dazed from everything and she feels somewhat responsible.
When she hears the plan, Serillana unsheathes her somewhat ornate dagger and holds in a limp hand. While staring at the blade, she says somewhat quietly for her "I'm ready...".

Snafu's discomfort increased exponentially when he witnessed the beating Harlan took. What if this man was truly innocent? Clearly that was a possibility.
"Everyone!" Snafu called out. "We need to keep our cool and bring this man to the Council for questioning. There should be no more discussion on the matter and no more BEATINGS... at least until the matter of his guilt or innocence is settled. And Harlan, stay silent. Words are sometimes infused with poison and empowered by magic... so if you speak you will be gagged again." (Diplomacy check 24)
With that said, Snafu agreed with Tishe's plan. And, after casting a quick spell on himself, he took the hands of his three allies and cast teleport.
DM David--- An Ambush of Their Own --- Tuesday January 18th, 2011 4:46:21 PM
The heroes make ready to confront those in the outer cave. They lay their plans and explain their previous actions and intentions. A plan is settled on and the heroes make ready to put it into action.
Harlan, beaten but not truly unconscious listens as the group rationalizes, explains, and comes clean about their true intentions and mulls over the seeds of doubt he implanted while they let him ramble on. Most backs are turned to him as they plot what to do next, he watches through slitted eyes. The smart one, Falmar they called him, the one that saw through his glib web of chatter turns to come examine him. Time to go thinks Harlan. When Falmar turns to look over his prisoner's wounds he sees the halfling looking back at him. With a wink and a word the halfling disappears and the shackles fall to the ground. (Spellcraft DC 19 to discern the spell for Falmar. DC 21 for anyone other than Falmar since he was looking right at Harlan as the spell was cast. The rest of you merely heard it.) Harlan makes his move before any teleports have gone off. But he did wait long enough to listen to a good deal of your business. He knows a lot, which will not make up for all he lost, but he still has his skin, and that's a lot in his book. (Basically he needed you all to step far enough away and be sufficiently distracted to get the spell off. The rules are kind of blurry about whether or not he can cast defensively while restricted and from the questioning, hitting and everything else I envisioned at least 1 person within 5' of him all this time until now while you made your plans and explained your actions. He had a held action and I judged that you were far enough away not be able to get a parting shot at him. Without a map that's a bit arbitrary and I apologize for that, but likely no one would be posting locations on a map while interrogating a stationary prisoner either.)

Snafu was just about to cast his mirror image spell when Harlan made his escape. As the half-elf turned around and saw the pile of clothes that once belonged to Harlan he couldn't help but chuckle to himself, though there was obvious frustration mixed in with it.
"The little bugger" was all Snafu could think to say at first, but then he started to formulate a plan. "We've got his clothes. If anyone can hone in on his location I'd be more than happy to teleport us there. If not, I say we target the fellows outside... though we may want to alter our plans slightly, since Harlan might be outside with his pals right now, telling them everything we said."

The spell was not a true teleport, but a dimension door ( only a verbal component these days ) Snafu gets a chuckle out of the idea of Halran directing an attack or running for his life in nothing but his boxer shorts. Then he buckles down to business and prepares to teleport the group to the doorway.Tishe makes herself gaseous and hops into Falmar's haversack. Falmar, Serillana and Thar all have their own outlooks on the event. Thar is angry the slaver escaped unpunished, Falmar that they need to move now and Serillana that Harlan will now never get to see just how good they really are.Touching each of his friends Snafu teleports them to the entrance to the cavern. Even having only seen the place in passing he is sure in his casting ( 26%) and they arrive unharmed right where he intended. Moxy says that everything is just fine. The creatures still sit looking at the water. To her they look almost like prey, the way they sit and wait for the one who went into the water. Prey, or herd animals, waiting for their alpha to lead them. Herd animals is more apt she thinks. Which reminds her she is due a snack and it better still be wriggling this time. She is doing such a good job watching this herd for her Falmar.

Falmar feels that Moxy almost instantly wants to fly to him, not liking the darkness and separation, despite the strong front the familiar had been showing.Having recied his warning though the bird stays put and watches the herd of people do nothing. Harlan is nowhere to be seen and it appears that your entrance has gone unnoticed. Serillana hides and maneuvers to flank the group. Thar watches silently, bow at the ready. Snafu gathers his senses after the spell, regaining his bearings. Tishe waits in Snafu's pack for the signal to emerge.

Snafu gave Tishe the signal and then began to move into position on the opposite side of the cavern from Serillana. He stuck close to the close to the shadows... so close in fact that he was almost completely one with the shadow. (OOC- natural 20 on stealth check- DC48).
Once in position Snafu waited for Tishe to make a move. He hoped things didn't get ugly, but he couldn't help but love the excitement of the moment.

With Tishe's acknowledging the enemy, Serillana trys tohelp with her own mind games. And also she wants to see something happen.
In a deeper and more masculine voice trying to mimic the dwarves, Serillana drawls out "An' we 'ave you SURROUNDED, wit more on the wae." (bluff 15).
"Was that all thatI can think of... Geez..." Serillana thinks as she gets out her dagger to wait.
DM David--- An Ambush of Their Own --- Monday January 24th, 2011 6:44:48 PM
The Heroes fan out a little and take ambush positions. Tishe now material and no longer a cloud of gas commands the creatures to surrender.( Intimidate, now that I read it, would require you to either spend 1 minute conversing with and thus intimidating your opponents OR for you to be clearly visible and threatening them. You are neither BUT you can see them as far as they know and are pretty convincingly ordering them to submit to you under a legitimate authority. It won't hurt your chances, especially with that good roll, let's leave it at that.)
The three figures around the fire huddle together even closer and the two that Moxy said looked armed apparently are, though poorly. One appears to have a wood cutting axe and the other a stout looking club. Both of them jump to their feet and peer out into the darkness around them. Apparently they can't see you, and the echoing in the cave makes it nearly impossible for them to tell where you are shouting from. The figures by the fire appear to be a woman with a young ( 5-7) girl and a young boy(7-9). The standing figures appear to be an older boy ( 15-17) and an adult man. They hold their 'weapons' defensively, as if not sure that dropping them is a good idea or not. The man calls out," Who are ye! we aren't harmin' no one down here, just waitin' on a friend. Leave us be! We don't want no trouble with no pitchforks!" Even at this distance you can see fear in his eyes. The girl whispers something to the woman ( DC 30 check for distance and echos to make it out) Highlight to display spoiler: { " Mommy, where has our friend Harlan gone? Serillana (AC 29 HP 55/85) Tuesday January 25th, 2011 6:40:05 AM
After her random bout of shouting, Serillana settles down and listens to everything that the older male calls out, hearing the little girl's questions to her mother. (Perception 40) Still wondering what Harlan was really doing down there, Serillana wants to get answers from these people that look like common folk.
"Hopefully I'm doing the right thing."
Hiding her dagger within the folds of fabric that make her armor (Sleight of Hand 43) Serillana walks towards the fire appearing normally to the people, facing the men. In a motion of peace, she puts her hands up to head height and in her most kind voice she says "We don't know where your friend is. We don't mean any harm, just want to know why you followed your friend down this dark and scary place, especially with the children in your care."
Tishe' (AC 26 HP 53/73)(Barkskin) Tuesday January 25th, 2011 12:23:12 PM
Thouroughly confused, Tishe' sees Serillana take the lead and keeps quiet. Every time she thinks there are going to be answers, there are only more questions, but this might be a time where letting the threads lay may be better than forcing a pattern.

The group appears frightened, but seeing Serillana, they seem more at ease. Her small stature much like Harlan's calms them, they relax the hold on their weapons and speak to her in a less defensive tone.
" Met the little fella a few days ago. He said would be a good idea for us to travel with him. Mighty friendly fella, always suggesting that my boy and I keep a watch on Ma and the youngins to keep em safe. He said he needed to meet some more friends down here and then we would all go meet some lady. I fergit what he said her name was . Something that started with a 'S' I think. Sheena, Shreeva, Shannon, somethin like that. He said she would take care of us after that. Hes a powerful spellcaster that lil guy. Seen him conjure up all manner of lights and fancies at night when we was all sittin around the fire. He said he would only be a minute. Been a lot longer. I hope hes all right in there. Not much of a swimmer or I'd go check. My name's Jeb by the way, sorry to ramble on. Been awhile since we had company other than ourselves. My boy here is Tucker, Molly there is my wife and the younins are Reggie and Newt. Whats your name? You're not that lady we was going to meet are ya?"
Listening to Jeb talk and knowing what you have seen and heard from Harlan it is a pretty good bet that these folks were about to be sold to the woman he mentions as slaves. It sounds likely from Jeb's description, that Harlan doesn't use shackles or chains to bind his slaves but a few charms and a lot of hypnotism and mind control. You have seen how smooth he can be when you already suspect him of no good. An unsuspecting mark would probably be easy prey for him. You have all of Harlan's possessions except his undergarments, perhaps more solid clues to where he was going and who he was to meet can be found with a less hurried search of his things.
Serillana (AC 29 HP 55/85) d20+10=18 ; Tuesday January 25th, 2011 5:42:02 PM "Now to play with their minds a little more? It's better where they were going to end up, definitely. My name starts with an " making her mind up that Harlan wasn't there for anything else but the dwarfs.
Serilllana relaxes her previous pose to one of sticking her right hand out in a gesture of friendship, requesting a handshake. "Oh, yes. How rude of me. I'm Serillana the Dancer, but just call me Sheri. People find that a little easier... Anyway... Harlan was a friend of mine, and I am the person that you have to speak to next." Serillana lies to get them more on her side (Bluff 18)
"He left on very important business right after he said that you were waiting on the other side of the water hole. He sends his condolences for not saying goodbye, something just came up suddenly. Messages just pop into his head like that. A minute he was there, the next he was gone. But that's usual for him.
"In his rush, he didn't tell us who or what was going to be on the other side, so we have a few people watching over us to make sure that nothing bad happens. You aren't those kind of folks, are you?
"Did you want to talk about where you wanted to go next? There are a few towns here where you can lodge and find out more information about this fine area. Maybe in a less enclosed area?" Serillana concludes.
DM David--- An Ambush of Their Own --- Tuesday January 25th, 2011 7:44:09 PM " Well we been traveling for he better part of a week now, a rest would sure be grand. We was headed to the south bend of the Windtree Creek where we just bought some land and were gonna set up a nice turnip farm there. We met this feller Harlan and it was like he was a long lost friend I tell you. He said it wasn't safe travelin from Roweena like we was to the south bend an that he would accompany us there, kinda look out for us. I seen him talk to people in his head like you said, so that musta been the important message he got. Are you gonna help us get there?"
A quick geography lesson ( you have seen enough maps of the Valley looking into the disappearances and building the tower to know this) Going to the bend in the creek from Roweena would in no way ever take the man to this place. Clearly he is being led somewhere other than he thinks he is going. The more he talks and answers your questions the more you feel that he IS telling what he knows to be the truth, but his truths are apparently lies told to him by Harlan.

Tishe' sighs in relief, they did the right thing this time. "Keep them safe for now, Sheri, and we'll make sure they get to thier new farm. Now all we have to do is figure out how to get Yanosh and the dwarves past my spell and the trap!" The laugh is also full of relief.
Unfortuneately, Tishe's spell abilities are nearly depleted, and she can niether dismiss her Wall of Thorns nor get a message to Yanosh!
"Going off half-shuttlecocked has its drawbacks", she murmurs.

Serillana smiles, knowing this situation has been diffused. "We have a camp setup nearby, we could go there to rest if you want. We'll be plenty safe there. However, our group have momentarily split up and now we are figuring out a way to get them to us.
"And as my friend Tishe' had said, we'll help you get to where you need to go. It seems that you might've been going in the wrong direction though, but that's no worry; people do get lost..."
Serillana keeps with the small talk, getting to know these farmers, why they are moving and why turnips versus any other crop to asking the little girl is she knew how to dance. As they are casually conversing, these thoughts run through Serillana's mind. "They are a bunch of really nice people... At least we saved them from what was going to happen to them."

Thar says a prayer of thanks that they managed to rescue these unsuspecting people from Harlan's treachery. However, he does vow to make sure Harlan pays with his life for the crimes he's committed...
He steps out of the shadows and introduces himself to the family. He gives the kids some of his toys and treats, and tells them that they're safe now.
He remembers those who are still back in the cave and says, "We've got to let our companions know about this... Any idea how to get back into the cave? Should I swim and risk the wall of thorns to tell them all this? I want to search Harlan's things and maybe that'll tell us where he's going. He's probably going to want some of these goodies back and I have a feeling we may see him again..."
DM David--- An Ambush of Their Own --- Wednesday January 26th, 2011 8:46:44 PM
Moxy replies with a bored flavor to her thoughts. She tells Falmar there was some yelling, then the dancer spoke to the group and now they all look like friends. She also says they are looking back towards the water and cave where he is and pointing and talking.
The former slaves are happy to hear that they will soon see their new farm and that these nice folks will help them get there. It is a simple matter for Tishe to swim into the other cave and with a thought and a gesture, dismiss the wall of thorns, reuniting the group. Harlan's discarded gear lies strewn about where Snafu stripped it off and the settlers turned slaves turned settlers await a trip to the surface and their new home. A cursory examination of Harlan's gear showed bags ( extra dimensional) holding gold and platinum, probably for paying his gatherers off . In his normal pack can be found what appears to be a ledger and a diary.
The ledger details his transactions for the past year. One delivery each month seems to be made to someone named Sharon. So far this year about thirty slaves have been gathered from the roadways and the nearby Windbourne hills and delivered to this Sharon.
The diary details meetings with Sharon and other slavers that Harlan deals with. It also details his "chainless" process where he charms the common people he enslaves with his glib tongue and sorcerous magics. It is then easy to give them a tonic ( also found in hid pack id a bottle of this tonic) that makes their minds foggy and pliable. Suggestions are easier and charms last longer while the target uses the tonic. It is not detailed how the draught is made or what the dosage is .
On the subject of Sharon, Harlan has several observations. They include excerpts such as " I can feel that she does not like me. I don't know if it is me or all people in general. Most of the slaves I bring her are human. While they are under the tonic they are docile and trusting, but she is in no way kind or friendly to them. She borders on abusive and I would guess sadistic. To her they are walking meat. She has even said that at least once. I don't know what happened to her to make her like this but it is unnerving to say the least. Based on the people I deal with regularly that is saying a lot." Another entry reads " Sharon seemed to recognize the family crest that one of the slaves I brought her wore today. She paid me for the lot of them and then without warning and with blinding speed turned on the man and literally tore out his throat with her teeth. It was so fast, so brutal and so unexpected I just stood in shock. Afterwards she stood there, covered in gore while the rest of the slaves shrieked in fear and tried to run. Just stood there watching the death throes of someone she had paid good gold for. From nowhere a bunch of wolves appeared from the brush near the meeting site and gathered the runners up. They tripped them, nipped at them but did not harm them. She showed no fear of the wolves and seemed to have complete control over them at all times. I left quickly. That was the weirdest thing I have EVER seen and I will likely take that sight to my grave." Another entry reads, " She paid for the slaves today like normal. She didn't even seem to mind that several of them were hurt. They were soldiers that I rounded up after a bar fight in some seedy tavern. She said that they were all healthy enough to be used in his experiments. I don't know who "he" is or what his experiment entail, but apparently he has an agenda and she is some kind of true believer in his cause. I don't know and I don't want to know. She creeps me out to my very soul but she pays top coin for even the worst specimens of humanoids." Still another reads, " Just the way she moves and carries herself screams predator. I deal with some pretty scary people. But I would rather face a crime boss who is upset that I am not getting him quality goods and ten of his toughest thugs than meet Sharon in the dark."
Tishe' (AC 26 HP 53/73)(Barkskin) Wednesday January 26th, 2011 9:07:16 PM
Tishe' urges everyone back to the temporary shelters around the slowly building tower for dinner and a good nights sleep.
Harlan's stuff can be split by the party, and Tishe' casts a Detect Magic cantrip in order to weed out the magical stuff. In the morning, she'll be able ti Identify all the magical items for the group.
Sitting around the fires at night, Tishe' muses. "We should get an escort for our friends the root farmers, but I think we have more important business elsewhere. The little slaver Harlan knew too many names and was too confident about the Pitchfork Council. I'm thinking he may have a backer in the highest realms of power in the Valley."
Serillana (AC 29 HP 55/85) Thursday January 27th, 2011 7:19:42 AM
Agreeing with Tishe', Serillana says "We do have other things to do. We'll help the farmers with where we need to go, but for us we need to find that little Harlan. We should report back to the Council about this new development, shouldn't we?"

We can't let Harlan get away with this and I'm not going to rest until he and this Sharon are found and dealt with. This Sharon sounds like some sort of vampiric creature and the only thing I hate more than spiders are vampires..."

"We need to do something about this" he said in a surprisingly serious tone. "It's hard to find joy in saving these people when so many others have fallen victim to the Harlan. He must be brought to justice. And this Sharon... well the only fate that seems just for her is death."
Snafu spent the next few minutes in quiet contemplation as he stroked his owl Hoot. But his silence didn't last long as he suddenly struck up a conversation with the owl.
"Yes Hoot, Pitchfork council for us... Snafu and friends needs to let them know about what's going on... maybe they'll have some answers."

Guys I am not going to be able to put up a post tonight. My tooth that I had filled a couple weeks ago flared up and I can't even think straight. Sorry, I will probably be able to put up a post tomorrow.
Let me answer a few things you bring up though. It is common knowledge who is on the Pitchfork council. Harlan dropped names sure, he dropped the names of the halfling man and wife on the council, his most likely supporters IF he were a legit businessman. You have met them and unless they are excellent tellers of tales, better than Harlan, you are certain they are not in cahouts with him. Again, there IS no magical gear that you will be splitting. There is sufficent cash for you to be raised to the wealth level of a 13th level character. You also have gains enough experience to raise oyur level to 13. Please do this over the weekend, before anymore combat or other dice heavy negotiations happen so you have your updated skills. You will all be brought up to 140000 gp vale and may buy items with up to that amount. For example, if you now have 100000 gp as your total wealth you will have 40000 gp to spend. Buy what you like and drop me a note. Conversion characters spending their wealth granted them by their DM didn't need to use the catacombs. I am doing this "in game" so to say and am not requiring your purchase to go through the catacombs.

DM David--- An Ambush of Their Own --- Saturday January 29th, 2011 8:32:22 AM
Looking closer at the journal entries and the ledger dates you start to see a pattern. It would appear that every two months Harlan meets Sharon to deliver slaves. The days do not vary much, it seems that the meeting is roughly every sixty days. That would make the next meeting three days from now. The place they meet is also detailed in his writings. There is a roadhouse on the border with the lands of the Dread to the North. It is described as Silas's Roadhouse in Harlan's writings. The place is " a den of thieves and cutthroats" according to Harlan. You do wonder how a man parades a bunch of slaves into an establishment and gets away with it. Or how one could be killed as described in Harlan's entries and not have it noticed and reported.
Tishe' (AC 26 HP 53/73)(Barkskin) Saturday January 29th, 2011 6:01:56 PM
"Three days", muses Tishe', "not enough time to go to the Council, but enough time to get to Silas' Roadhouse."
"Looks like a new thread puts our shuttle into a new direction. We need to read this journal and learn as much as we can. Do you think we could pretend to be Harlan and a string of slaves? I mean, without anyone getting thier throat bit through. Or should we go in and root it out?"
Serillana (AC 29 HP 55/85) Saturday January 29th, 2011 8:43:25 PM
"I'm sure I've performed in worse places than what Harlan describes in his journal..." Serillana reminisces the time where she and Taldera were forced to flee from an unknown thieve's guild's meeting place.
"We can't be totally sure what Harlan is going to do. From the journal, I don't think he'll meet up with Sharon any time soon for fear of death, especially with no slaves with him. I think we should travel and do some recon on the meeting place.
"And pretending to be Harlan and a bunch of slavers? That sounds like a great idea. We do have his 'costume' and I've done some male... acting before. But this all depends on how long the trip was going to take from here and the time that we have once reaching the place."
