Serillana (AC 29 HP 80/89 CMD 29) Monday March 28th, 2011 8:49:55 AM
As Snafu follows her, she lifts up her hand as if to say no. She then looks as find him back talking about magic. *Hmph* Serillana vocalises and moves off into the darkness of the night. She only takes a few steps and cloaks herself in shadow, only a few steps away from the door, still and quiet in thought.
"Sigh.... I'm more the outcast now, especially without Taldera... I understand the most basic of magics, but I can't get my head around all this arcane talk. Taldy made beautiful music, and I was happy performing for the general public. Performing for myself. It was all about me.
'And now, where am I? Hunting this injured werewolf. For the greater good. With companions that are more intelligent and have a lot more tricks up their sleeves. I can sling stones, thanks to my father. I can dance, thanks to my mother. But how does that compare to magicking flames that can decimate a pack of wolves? Or with some magic words, hide in more situations that I can? I... I just don't know..."
-----------------------------
OOC: Just to let you know I'm still here.
And Serillana is currently going through a uselessness crisis... It's not a reflection of you guys, its just what Serillana would be thinking. She isn't quite suited to teleporting missions, being the only non-magic user in the group...

Skalipy's eye widen a little at his name." You know me.... or do you just know my name? You see, if you knew me, you would know why I do what I do. Why I hide under the skirt of the Dread Lords who are too preoccupied with themselves to worry about me. Soon however that will change. The foul wind that blows from their places of power speak of heroes slaying the Dread Lords, seeking THE Dread himself. I am small and cannot help them, nor do I wish to. They were a convenient bogey man to frighten the curious away from my work. It is work I do for my Lord, my God Martaeus. Therefore there is no way I can stop. However I will grant you this. You are obviously dedicated to protecting the Cinnamon Valley. Otherwise Sharon would not have come home on deaths door last night simply trying to obtain test subjects for me. I will tell her that the Cinnamon Valley is no longer hers to hunt. That our lord tested her in the Valley and she was shown to be wanting. She may take it badly, she may come and try to kill you. Or she may submit to our master's will and use her talents in the border realms, places where no one cares for their neighbor and will rise to stop her. Would this be acceptable to you? Your valley safe and my research continuing? I am willing to live with that." Diplomacy checks will not affect you as PC's you will draw your own conclusions. Suffice it to say his tone is one of a man trying to be reasonable with someone that threatens his way of life. So far as you can tell he is being honest with you. Just one look at Skalipy tells you that he believes in his rligion as much as any of the rest of you believe in your own. The light of a fanatic burns in his eyes...but so does the light of wisdom. He knows that he may need to compromise and is willing to in order to save his dream, his duty as he sees it to Martaeus.
OOC Sorry I didn't post Friday or on the weekend. It all kinda got away from me and then I felt poorly Sunday night and didn't post. We are near the end of this thread. Tishe' (AC 26 HP 68/107 (-5 CON) Tuesday March 29th, 2011 2:43:19 PM
Having come so soon from the Southern Continent, Tishe' knows little about the northern gods. Oh sure, Trellus and Grymash told her a little of Domi and Gargul, and while she was in the Sargrass, she came face to face with the Gray Lord and the domineering Ga'al, but of Marteus? She knows nothing.
But an accomodation won't end the problem, only push it aside. She speaks boldly to Skalipy. "Sharon is guilty of kidnapping, slavery, and at least 2 murders. Exile from Cinnamon Valley isn't good enough for her crimes: she is under arrest for the Council. Any resistance is acknowledging guilt, and you know that we can find her wherever she goes, and we'll not rest until she is brought to justice."
"But there are other issues. Any people that you have from Cinnamon Valley must be released to our custody; especially the girl Cassie."
"And I would like to learn more about your Marteus and these expiriments that you feel are so vital."
Just keep talking, thinks Tishe', and we will learn more thread by thread.

Snafu - AC 25 (+7), HP 108/108 (+20) False Life, Mage Armor, Heroism, freedom of movement d20+30=39 ; Tuesday March 29th, 2011 4:31:05 PM
Snafu wanted to jump in, but he saw that Tishe had things well under control.
Instead he focused on the room, and the potential dangers in it. He conducted a quick scan, and then without tipping his action whatsoever, he conducted a second scan, this time for magic.
Actions: 1) Perception- 39 2) Detect Magic (silent and still)- scanning room for signs of magic.
DM David--- A New Day Dawns --- Tuesday March 29th, 2011 6:50:40 PM
Snafu watches the room, taking in all that he can. The room has many carvings and tapestries all depicting diseases and the suffering they cause. However, your perceptive interpretation of them also shows that they depict some survivors of the pestilence in each artwork. Battered, and scarred the survivors emerge from the plague scenes with a stronger set to their shoulders, a gleam in their eye, they are clearly stronger for their ordeal. Snafu's second scan shows that the Altar is clearly warded. As he looks deeper he discerns that the spell appears to be an Unhallow, and it has another spell attached to it. ( Spellcraft DC 20 to make out what spell is attached). You also notice Sharon, in human form, deep in the shadows in the back of the church, behind the altar. She clearly has not noticed you, so sure that she can hide in a place familiar to her. She does not appear hostile, or even armed, but simply listening to the discussion as it unfolds.
Falmar concentrates and finds that the dwarf is undeniably evil. As he is a priest I do not think you even need to use the skill to tell that of him, as the clerics have a definite aura these days, but your paladin training confirms what your eyes see. Sweeping the room with your gaze, the Altar is clearly radiating evil, perhaps a spell of some kind, and there is a hidden person,Sharon you think, behind the Altar.
To Tishe, Skalipy replies" Two murders? I can assure you there are many more that I can think of without breaking a sweat. Call them what you will, the child was traumatized early on and it has left her very antisocially inclined. In short she harbors a psychotic hatred of those that killed her family. She chooses to express that hatred violently. Kidnapping, surely she has committed, but I doubt you could prove slavery. Once she acquires subjects for my experiments she delivers them to me and does not profit monetarily for it. Splitting hairs I know, but we are being honest with one another are we not?" " On to your other points. I would allow any of those from Cinnamon Valley still able to leave to do so, however transporting them back there would be your problem. Cassie, why does that name sound familiar? Ah, yes I recall the child you speak of, arrived here about two months ago I believe. (this is roughly how long construction has taken on your new base of operations, so he is talking about the right child you realize) She has been a most promising subject. She has risen to every test I have given her and come out on top. It will distress me to let her go, but if that is what it takes I will let her go free. If she wishes to learn more about her potential, she will undoubtedly find her own way. " " Your last point however I would never agree to you taking Sharon to any court to face any justice you would perceive her deserving. Again we are being honest with one another here. Sharon survived what life has dealt her as a hand and now takes revenge on those she perceives guilty of inflicting cruelty on her. It does not matter if she knows the person or not, not to her. All people that do not know suffering and the clarity it brings are guilty of the same crimes to her. She metes out a swift and final sentence for their lack of knowledge and their misfortune for crossing her path. I have cared for the child since I found her, the villagers unsure or unwilling to do to a child what they had done to the child's parents. Weak bastards that they were. I took her into my care and when they tried to stop me I defended her as her mother would have had she been able. She is a survivor and a true child of our Lord Martaeus. I would no more turn her over to you than I would a child born of my own loins. On that matter you have my final word." Your friends have had the chance to see what you saw through your scrying and now I suspect both can teleport here as easily as you just did. Your Paladin friend is about to tell you that my cloth is dyed in the deepest black and that all I do is stall you for some purpose he cannot yet see. You know a little of me and what I do, would you tell me something about yourselves? Perhaps how and why you are suddenly thrust in my path. My master's plan nears its culmination and suddenly I am plagued by a new band of do-gooders. I would like to know why this trial has been added to my list of tests. I do not fear it. If I pass I will be that much stronger, and if I fail you will know what I mean by the forge of trial making a person more capable. What say you? Regale me with this tale and if you still wish to know more I will show you what I do here."

Thar sees that the conversation is coming to a head... They either need to accept a limited victory, where they free the slaves and rescue the young girl, but let Sharon go... or do they fight Skalipy and Sharon both, in order to bring Sharon to some sort of justice... However, he isn't comfortable with Skalipy's experiments upon innocents and he's not willing to let that continue... But he can't speak for teh rest of the party...
For now, he'll let Tishe' and the rest do the talking, and he remains silent and slealthy and takes cover behind a pillar or wall, but in sight of Sharon... His bow and spells are ready...
DM David--- A New Day Dawns --- Wednesday March 30th, 2011 4:27:33 PM
OOC Sorry, yes Thar spots Sharon behind the altar as well. As for exits there is one behind the Altar, presumably to a ready room for the priest and others before ceremonies and there is one behind Skalipy, a set of heavy ,iron bound wooden doors. Also you CAN leave the safe little haven of the group, all standing together, touching and ready to teleport out if anything happens. I think it would be a bad idea and one of your companions would likely not let go of you and would pull you back, but that's just me. Remember your plan was go in, look around, go home. The conversation is mucking that up some but it sounds like Snafu is set to go if either of those two breaks wind loudly.

The spell is Invisibility purge. That is one of the spells allowed to be combined with Hallow or Unhallow and it lasts for up to a year unless it is dispeled or changed by another casting of Hallow/ Unhallow.
" Your companions do not seem as disturbed as you do Miss Scryer. They hesitate to follow your orders. Maybe they wish to see the experiments I use to make these folk all that they can be. Some become hardy and ratlike, as you no doubt saw in your limited tour of the chapel earlier. Some become paragons of their race, able to do, understand and achieve far more than their non challenged counterparts. Sadly only a few have achieved the same level of hardiness I have. Most of them have embraced the changes in them and moved out to form temples or places of devotion of their own. I assume that you're not going to accept my offer then? Pity. I look forward to the next time you drop in. Good bye for now."

"This ends tomorrow" Snafu promised. "Poxy on the odds, and poxy on having to sleep another night with this weight on our shoulders. I would rather die than live another day with this filth running around."
"I'm going back tomorrow morning and I'm going to kill him, or die trying" Snafu continued. "Anyone coming had better get their rest, because I fear I'll lose my mind if I wait too long."

Hearing Snafu's promise, he replies in a matter of fact tone, "Yes, I'll be by your side every step of the way, and they will pay with their lives... Only 1 group will be alive when we're done... Them or us... I swear that on my life..."

Dulcet is taken aback by the state of the heroes when they return. She quickly dispatches her manservant for refreshments and gently asks what happened." What happened at that place to leave you in such a state. Did the werewolf attack you? Are you...bitten? Or did the priest that healed it somehow hurt you?" As she asks she is making her cauldron ready to perform whatever spell is required by the answer she receives.
Moments later a tray is brought in with hot tea and an assortment of buns and cakes on it. The manservant then quickly departs as Dulcet motions him out of the room.

If it would have, I could have healed them up but thanks for your offer. Regarding the conversation, I'll defer to my companions who spoke directly with the priest...
That said, he moves aside and has a bite or two to eat... Conversation isn't his thing, and he's more at home in solitude or out in the forest among nature... Being inside too much makes him antsy...

"What godlings do you have here in the Northern Continent?", she wonders aloud.

Rot and blight are the words used most often to describe it. Where in that cursed land he resides I cannot tell you. Since he also said that he is not powerful enough nor a believer in their cause I would say he probably lived near the edge, near the border kingdoms and the Valley. Beyond that I couldn't say.The land is riddled with ancient decrepit structures. He could have taken any of them to make his home in." " They may retire to the guest rooms I have prepared. Terrible visions haunted Snafu throughout the night, and caused him to wake earlier than usual. In effort to clear his mind, he began mentally preparing himself for what would prove to be a very difficult day. Children's lives were at stake and that was starting to take a toll on Snafu's mind.
Just before leaving his room, Snafu muttered a two-word prayer- "Help us". It was a message for any god that would take the time to listen. Snafu wasn't one for religion so he didn't have much faith that his prayer would be answered, but he thought it a good idea to ask anyway... for the children.

If Falmar was there, and has the ability to teleport and might be able to take me. You three go and teleport to the area, and if you can send a message back to Falmar relative positions of the people in the room, then we can kinda surprise them that way..."
DM David--- A New Day Dawns --- Sunday April 10th, 2011 6:39:26 PM " You would go alone, in hopes to draw attention from your friends? Kayleigh and the others closer to nature were right about you then. They called you a 'pack' rather than an adventuring company. They said you acted more in accordance with the way a natural pack of animals would, rather than as adventurers out for gain. That one of you would voluntarily act as bait to close a trap is not what we have come to expect from mere adventurers. I am glad the Valley has chosen to make you our guardians." " If you would like, I can place a greater scrying on you, so that I may watch your progress as you go through his lab. Then I could tell the others when it was likely safe for them to go. Beyond that I do not know what I can offer you beyond some little healing when you return. I know not what trials he puts his subjects through so I couldn't guess how to ward you for the visit."
Tishe' (AC 26 HP 107/107 Monday April 11th, 2011 11:09:54 AM
At first, Tishe' is completely against Snafu making himself bait. But the more she thinks of it (and Serallina's suggestion), the better it sounds... with one major exception.
"I like the idea for Snafu to teleport in and have the ability to wander with Skalipy as long as Dulcet's Scry is on him so we can see where he is and charge in if necessary. I also like the ability for two groups to charge in, possibly at different places. A team of Serallina and Falmar, and another team of me and Thar could work well in dividing any defense set up to repel teleporters.
There are three problems that I see to the plan. First, if Snafu is in and pretending to consider Skalipy's offer alone, I will need a Teleportation scroll to be the second team with Thar. Second, if Skalipy can sense Scrying, he should see Dulcet's scry and immediately suspect Snafu is a plant unless there are additional magics to hide the scrying. Third, if Dulcet is Scrying, neither Falmar nor myself will be able to 'see' a landing good enough to teleport in, unless there is a method for us to see what Dulcet sees."
Thar, AC 27, 124/124, McVE, Spell Res 23 Monday April 11th, 2011 12:39:07 PM
Thar too is disturbed at the idea of Snafu being bait, even if it could give them some information about what they're facing. Breaking up the party is a risky proposition...
He listens to Tishe's suggestion and responds, "Is there any other way we could get in without having to use Snafu as bait? And those are great points about the scrying and if our foe can detect it, then we've given away most of our surprise? Is the information we gain worth the risk to Snafu? I'd feel a lot more comfortable teleporting somewhere near the temple, and doing an outside recon before going in."
"Also, if we get into a fight and Tishe' is hurt or taken out, who will teleport us back home if we need to retreat? We need a good exit plan if things go bad."
Snafu - AC 25 (+7), HP 108/108 (+20) False Life, Mage Armor, Heroism, freedom of movement Monday April 11th, 2011 2:56:19 PM
Snafu paused for a moment to ponder everyone's questions and concerns, but failed to come up with anything to lessen the risk.
"Scrying is risky, but probably a good risk" Snafu started. "I don't have anything that will mask the scyring, other than my sparkling personality. If I sense anything funny from old 'Psychopy' I'll tell him... Careful, I think somebody's watching me. That might confuse him for long enough for you to teleport in and come to my rescue... It can be our code word."
"Look, I know it's risky, but unless we can come up with something better, I say it's worth the risk. The lives of innocents are at stake, and Snafu can't live with himself if he doesn't do something about it. Every moment we wait..."
Snafu's voice trailed off with those words, but then he recovered. "I'm ready to go. If you can think of anything to increase our chances I'm all for it, but I can't stand around much longer. Action must be taken."
DM David--- A New Day Dawns --- Monday April 11th, 2011 5:10:40 PM " I could alter the scrying spell. Tinker with the components such that your packmates could see you in my cauldron as I see you. I would need something from you, Snafu, say a lock of your hair or spittle from your witty tongue. This would make the scrying easier and attune it to you, perhaps dulling the other priest from seeing the spell. I would also need something from those who would watch. I think an eyelash or tears since it is their vision I wish to attune to the spell. It will last for several hours, how many I cannot say since the tinkering will change the rules of magic that apply to the spell. It may also have side effects on you or on those who view you through it, but it is within my power to change the spell to allow your friends to see. To bolster your story that you are being watched I would allow you a few moments before I cast my scry. Thus it is like you were 'discovered' as missing and we are seeking you out. Does that make your plan safer in your view?" " A scroll of Teleport I do not have. I cannot use it and have no need for it so I have none on hand. There is a catacombs entrance in Jarlswolf though. They will surely have one on hand."
Tishe' (AC 26 HP 107/107 Monday April 11th, 2011 7:14:31 PM
"I like it", declares Tishe', "Tinkering with the spell and waiting until you are already gone to cast it can be just enough to throw off Skalipy. We will have the ability to see you and teleport directly to you if you speak your code phrase. And then we have the battle without stepping into a known ambush."
Tishe' wants to do a quick trip to Jarlswolf for a scroll of Teleportation to be ready for the plan, assuming she can get there and back this morning.

"It's decided then" he said with absolute finality. "Get the scrolls... perhaps two of them... just in case. I'm ready to get this over with."
With that Snafu picked his owl up and put him on his arm. "You stay here Hoot" he explained gently. "And don't worry. Your little Snafie will be just fine. He's on good hands with all of his companions watching."
Hoot didn't reply, but he did blink twice.

Dulcet turns to her work table and gathers several vessels. Before Tishe can head to the Catacombs Dulcet plucks a few of her lashes and from the ensuing sharp and sudden pain of the plucking she sweeps a tear from the other witch's eye into one vessel. She then releases Tishe to shop. She gathers a similar sample from Thar, Falmar and Serillana. She sets these aside and turns to Snafu. With a glass dagger she shears a lock of his hair from his head, careful not to cut him. She then pulls out a piece of wood, much like a tongue depressor and scrapes the inside of his mouth for saliva. She nods then content that she can weave these elements into her spell. She warns then all that such tinkering can sometimes cause side effects that she cannot predict and they should all be ready for anything. She also warns Snafu that he will feel the spell and the urge to resist it. If he does resist it, there may be no way to watch him.
OOC OK, I would like all of you to post your preparations. If you memorize spells I would like you to post them too on the board if you haven't already. Snafu... You will be making either Bluff checks or perform:acting checks at some points in your tour, mostly when you see something that would likely disturb you and cause a response. I will tell you when I need then from you. This is it, this is the end game for this scenario. Remember the foes you have faced and how they react. These are not automatons with no sense of self preservation. By their very nature they are survivors. Keep that in mind. Thank you for the opportunity to DM for you. I hope you have had fun and that this fight is all you are looking forward to it being. Dai will take over with a new scenario once this is finished and I will be retiring from DMing. There are things the management and I don't do the same way and I like the Wold the way it is too much to buck the system. Good luck, hopefully this will be a good challenge for you all.
Oh, and Snafu, take one hero point now. Going in alone is either very brave or very foolish. There is a fine line between the two. Either way, what you are doing is clearly heroic to my eyes .

Once per day, as a full-round action, a paladin may magically call her mount to her side. This ability is the equivalent of a spell of a level equal to one-third the paladin's level. The mount immediately appears adjacent to the paladin. A paladin can use this ability once per day at 5th level, and one additional time per day for every 4 levels thereafter, for a total of four times per day at 17th level
I read this as a summoning. I think you could 'call' Dondit once you have teleported and have him show up there. Thats how it reads to me.

Preparations made, Snafu stands ready before his friends. Wiping his sweaty palms on his tunic, he envisions the Temple and where he wants to appear in it [i]" Before the altar, with room on all sides in case something happens."[/b] are his thoughts. With a sly grin to his friends, he speaks the words and appears in the Temple. It is empty, he thinks on first glance, as the razzle dazzle from the teleport leave him a bit sluggish. The from the last row of pews he sees the child stand up and smile at him.
She is around ten years old and appears thin, as if she has been ill. Her hair is patchy, as if malnutrition or illness may have ravaged that as well. Her cheeks and eyes are sunken and hollow looking. Her smile however is genuine and warm, even considering her ravaged features.Dangling from one hand is a rag doll. You swaer to yourself you hhave seen similar dolls before, somewhere in the valley.... The little girl that disappeared had them in her room.
" He knew at least one of you would come, and he bade me wait for you and lead you to him when you arrived. My name is Cassie, what is yours? Come, walk with me and we will go and see Skalipy. He has such wonders to show you."
Snafu's keen hearing then takes in another sound and he wheels to see the werewolf form of Sharon standing behind him, near the altar. He weapons are strapped to her muscular thighs and she leans forward studying and smelling him. This goes on for a moment and finally she motions him to follow the girl. Cassie extends her hand for Snafu to take.
Bluff check please, at +5 for you back being to Sharon when you make it. also add +2 for your sense motive and +2 for your perception check . This bluff is to gague your involuntary reaction to meeting Cassie, the girl you were tasked to find all those months ago acting on Skalipy's behalf. She looks nothing like the waif described to you by her parents, yet looking at her, her clothes and the rag doll in her hand you cannot deny that she is the same child. Total bonus for the check will be +9 plus your normal bonuses.

"On our walk, perhaps you can tell me more of these wonders?" he suggested to the girl. "It would be a lie for me to say that I didn't have some concerns about Skalipy's work, but seeing you here gives me hope so I will reserve judgment until I learn more". (OOC- diplomacy check 37)

DM David--- A New Day Dawns --- Thursday April 14th, 2011 4:45:21 PM
OOC Yup the 15 might hurt, lets see how you recover 8). Dulcet has not begun her spell yet, she is waiting until Snafu can win their confidence some before adding to his troubles.
IC Snafu visibly winces when he makes the connection as to who Cassie is. Thankfully, perhaps it is the fervent prayers of those he left behind that make it so, His shudder is at just the same time Sharon slides in behind him and begins breathing down his neck. Her breath reeks of meet and you can only wonder what, or who it was she last ate.
Sharon growls in his ear, close enough that she actually licks the nape of his neck when she finishes her taunt. " Not thinking you wouldn't be watched were you half breed? Skalipy does not trust your people so far as to leave his most promising pupil there unattended. Move along and see what Marteaus has taught us and learn what it means to be a survivor."
Cassie on the other hand seems annoyed by Sharon's theatrics and turns to the werewolf, without a trace of fear in her stance or voice. " Leave him Sharon! Skalipy said to gauge the reactions of any who came. If you find his motives lacking then kill him and be done, but do not taunt one who has come here to learn our Lord's ways and the method he uses to achieve them!" You tense for the blow that will end it all, but the breathing draws a bit further back and all you hear is" I still watch you. Make a move on the child or any of Skalipy's chosen and I will end you." It is said so low and so close to your ear you doubt any but you heard it. The level of malice in the voice leaves you with little doubt that the first strike will be devastating if not fatal.
To Snafu Cassie continues on. " It is not my place to show you the rites we undergo to be closer to our Lord. Skalipy is the teacher, the most advanced of our brethren and it is his place to show you. I will say that you can not know the feeling of power, the sheer confidence in your own self that comes from the rituals until you have participated in them. When I was brought here I was a frightened child, coddled by my mother and father and unsure of my own abilities. Teleport me anywhere now with a few simple items and leave me and I am confident I will not only survive, but thrive. The trials are harsh, demanding, cruel and brutal. Yet once you pass each one you find a facet of yourself you never knew existed. That is why Skalipy works like he does. Once he finishes the machine he will be able to expose anywhere he wants to the trials and there will be so many more good people , tested people who will know what they can do. And they will owe all of that to Skalipy aand our Lord."
You sense that she truly believes all of what she says. She shows no trace of the frailty, the innocence of the child you were told to bring back. Not a diviner but knowledgeable in magic you sense that if you did not have a physical item of hers to use in a scrying you would not find her by her parents description alone. She lead you out of the temple and into worked stone passages . The stone looks old, and is in some disrepair. You assume this place had been abandoned and then cleaned up and refitted to Skalipy's needs. She leads you on down into the hallways, never hesitating, and always chatting to you as you go.
Finally, after about 5 minutes you come to a door. Outside it stand 2 of the rat people Tishe tried to disguise you as on the recon mission. Both wear robes and both are armed. You cannot tell what they might wear beneath their robes. They look at you intently as Cassie brings you up to them. She speaks to them in squeaks and guttral tones and they open the door to Skalipy's workshop and usher you in.
Back in Dulcet's workshop an hourglass that you just now noticed runs out of sand. With a shaky voice Dulcet announces" I know it seems an eternity, but it has only been five minutes. Should I cast the scrying or wait a bit longer. It is your call."

"Sharon, I understand your need for heightened security and your lack of trust" he said diplomatically while continuing to walk with his back to her. "You sense my concern for this child and my doubts about Skalipy's work. However, perhaps you also sense my curiosity?"
"Before me there is a child that has become gifted beyond her years and her heart seems to be fully intact. Moreover, I sense in her no desire to leave this place. She seems content... even proud. This gives me hope that perhaps my doubts about Skalipy's work are unfounded and that I need to try to be objective in my observations. And so, I will empty my cup of my preconceived notions and prejudices, so that it can be filled with what I learn today. I hold out hope that you will do the same."

Dulcet begins the spell. She adds the lashes and tears from each of you and the saliva and hair from Snafu. The cauldron boils with a furious tempo and then stills and becomes crystal clear. Serillana, Tishe, Thar and Falmar please make a will save DC 22 as the tinkered spell has an unexpected side effect. Those that save can see Snafu as described below, those that fail see nothing because their world has gone dark. Their eyes turn a milky white and they are blinded.
As Snafu tries to reassure Sharon that he is there to learn about the experiments and not to judge he steps into the workshop. Snafu is again horrified to see several people strapped to workbenches, though he is able to master his surprise because he half expected to find something similar. Skalipy stands over them with a clipboard in his hands, taking notes with a quill and ink. Before he can turn to recieve his guest Snafu hears Sharon behind him whisper/growl in his ear again." You still smell more afraid than curious half breed. To me you still smell like....prey. But the child believes you and as you are greatly outnumbered here, I will let you see, and decide for yourself how great is our Lord."
Skalipy turns and puts down his clipboard to greet his guest. As he does so Snafu feels a crawling sensation on his neck, as if he is being ...watched. Snafu make a Will save DC 32....or you can choose to just fail the save, but you do not know what you are saving against or who might have cast the spell. Skalipy's eyes flick over Snafu's shoulder and he begins to shake his head.
The workshop consists of three occupied workbenches, each with a body strapped to them. The bodies appear to have been strapped there for at least three days and their occupants are all gravely ill. They all have a blotchy rash covering all of their exposed skin, mucus runs from their noses and they breathe with a bubbling, raspy sound that cannot be good. Behind the benches is a stone worktable with several vile beakers on it . The fluid in the beakers is disgusting, reminding you of liquefied, putrefied flesh

Snafu tried his best to ignore Sharon’s threats, instead focusing on every detail of his surroundings. He then turned to face Skalipy and tried to take some measure of the man and his intentions.
Moments later Snafu felt something attack his mental faculties. His first reaction was to resist its intrusion, but then he remembered what Dulcet had told him earlier. Please don’t let this be him he thought to himself as he lowered his mental defenses.
“In my life I have always believed that understanding should come before judgment” Snafu started. “And so I come before you today in hopes that I might gain a better understanding of your work. It would be false to say that I have no apprehension about what you are doing, but I will try to keep my mind open before forming any opinions.”
“With this in mind” Snafu continued as he motioned around the room. “Please educate me as to what all of this is.”

DM David--- A New Day Dawns --- d20+20=22 Monday April 18th, 2011 4:26:07 PM
Thar could also make a will save so I could move this along. If you were waiting for a spell penetration roll, it is 22, so the scrying will not include you. I'll just carry on then. 8)
DM David--- A New Day Dawns --- Monday April 18th, 2011 5:39:01 PM
OOC Tishe, you can see AND HEAR everything I describe to Snafu. Hearing is not normally part of the scrying but you must have benefited somehow from your acceptance of the tinkered spell, or maybe it is because you are a witch and another witch cast the spell. The viewing area may be a little wider than normal, but that's OK, the spell has been altered and boy, did it turn out way worse than I thought it would. Oh well, moving on...
Panic tinges Dulcet's voice as she answers her fellow witch. " I can see nothing at all myself. It would seem that my tinkering has rendered all but you and your priest blind. My greatest hope is that when the spell ends so will the blindness, but I can do nothing to control the spell now that it has taken effect. It is actually far more tiring than a normal Greater Scrying would be, I am not sure how long I can maintain it. Surely not the many hours I would normally be able to. Transporting your pack to your friend's side is now your responsibility. You have done it before , Just use the boots and leave your familiars and companions here with me. I will warn you before the spell tires me to the point it will end. You will have to judge whether your friend is in danger or doing what he proposed and gaining needed insight into the mad man's scheme." With that Dulcet begins to grit her teeth and stops speaking, The strain of the tinkered spell showing on her face and in the rigid pose of her body.
Meanwhile, back in the lab...
Snafu lowers his defenses and gets the overwhelming feeling of someone looking over his shoulder. Skalipy speaks, still shaking his head." Didn't take them long to scry you did it boy? I'm guessing that you didn't quite ask permission to come and find out more for yourself? That is easily the BIGGEST scrying portal I have ever seen. I can almost reach right through and touch the one on the other side looking at you. That pesky witch girl again that was so offended yesterday in our little chat. Boy she must be angry with you. Well, I can't make her stop watching, so lets get on with the show, shall we?" Skalipy gestures to the subjects strapped to his tables. " This is the second testing for each of these fellows. Like Cassie they survived the first test and recovered to find themselves stronger than when they began. Also like Cassie I have introduced their next challenge to them. I do not wish to, or need worry about, swelling the girl's head. She is far stronger than I am. Martaeus will someday call on her to take the final test and she will become greater than I can ever hope to become. I see it in your eyes, and your stance, you wonder how? How can I possibly make these people sick and just wait to see if they overcome the sickness I put in them? It is the Master's will is all I can say. Maybe some more about me will help you understand. Sit, and I will tell you how I came to be the administrator of the great Martaues's tests." He motions Snafu to a desk area by the window and ringing a bell, summons one of the rat folk you saw before. This one wheels in a cart. On it are small sandwiches and a carafe of coffee. Milk and sugar are aso available for the coffee. Cassie sits in one of the armchairs in front of the desk, tucking her legs under herself just as any young child her age would. Sharon sits in another. Both of them help themselves to the sandwiches and beverages, Cassie only having milk and not coffee. Skalipy sits behind the desk and sips his coffee and nibbles on one of the sandwiches. He then begins his tale. " My family were not dwarves who lived underground, my father was exiled from his home when he was young over some trade deal gone wrong. He was an accomplished smith, so he headed to one of the small baronies up here on the surface and made a good living making and mending what the villagers needed. I was born his only son and it was expected I would learn the craft from him when I was old enough. My two sisters would learn other crafts, maybe jewelry or fine smithing, not the industrial and wartime smithing I was to learn. This would build us into quite a merchant franchise . When I was still what you would call a boy, a sickness began to roll through the land. It was a horrible thing that killed almost everyone that contracted it. Needless to say it struck our town, and while the dwarven folk are a bit more sturdy than you here on the surface, my family still fell ill with this plague. I became sick, the fever burned within me, so hot it felt like I was working the forge when in fact I was lying in bed trying hard not to move. I must have passed out from the fever, but I saw my Lord Martaeus and he told me that I would recover, if I was strong enough. When I finally did awaken, I was the only one alive for miles around. The fever had baked my brain, and the only thing that satisfied the void it had opened was learning. I learned about my Lord. I learned about sickness. I learned how to mix chemicals and how to cast spells. Instead of the smith I was to become, fusing metal and stone to forge creations, I learned to forge the flesh of those I encountered with sickness. I forged stronger, more resilient people, when they were strong enough to endure the sickness. Needless to say I was not a popular man." " One day I entered a village, to find that the town was already in an uproar. Asking around I found out that the place had been plagued by werewolves. The Paladin Protector of the village had said she had stomped them out years ago, and their attacks had stopped. Recently though a few people had been slain by an unknown beast. The attacks had begun anew. One of the night watch had followed the beast and watched it go into the Protector's home, through the front door, as if it lived there. In the morning they Paladin was paid a visit by the watch, and found sitting naked and bloody in her sitting room, confused about where she was and how she had come to be there. The watch arrested her, and imprisoned her. Sure enough, the next night she transformed into a werewolf and tried to escape the cell that held her. In the morning, the townsfolk raided the jail, and burned her at a stake out in the village square. As I arrived they were trying to decide the fate of her five year old daughter. " Silent up to this point, a low moan escapes Sharon as she sits huddled and weeping in the armchair next to Snafu. It does not take a huge intelligence to figure out who that child might have been. " The mayor decided to watch and see if the child transformed the next night. My Lord Martaues spoke to me in a clear voice and told me she would, and that I would deliver her from her captors. This was just the next part of my testing. I went into the jail that night. The few guards on duty said nothing as I went to pray with the child, after all I was a priest. When they all fell asleep from the magic my Lord had taught me I open the cell and led the child away. That night I watched as she transformed and knew why my Lord had demanded her. She was sick, the way that I had been sick, but her sickness would never heal. She would suffer with it her whole life. And that suffering made her strong. She made me see that I should not wander about trying to teach the masses where true strength lay waiting for them to grasp it, but that I should found a place and gather them to me and show them the power of affliction and suffering. The clarity of being when one overcomes the sickness of death. So, that is what I have done." He pauses for Snafu to take it all in. He waits to answer any questions the half elf may have.

Tishe' calms down and assures Falmar and Seralina that they should be able to see when the Scrying spell ends. The witch then relates everything said by Skalipy, Sharon, Snafu, and... Cassie.
"Skalipy seems to know of the scry but fallen for Snafu's cover story. The information on Sharon and Skalipy is interesting, although I don't know how we can use it right now... Oh! They are getting ready to demonstrate another set of experiments to Snafu! We may have to get there pretty soon."
Thar, AC 27, 124/124, McVE, Spell Res 23 Tuesday April 19th, 2011 1:40:44 PM
Thar listens to the situation play out... He nods in relief as Snafu' ruse seems to be working as planned...
However, the story of Skalipy and how he got to this point in his life is disturbing... "He's utterly mad, but thinks he's sane..." whispers Thar.
Snafu - AC 25 (+7), HP 108/108 (+20) False Life, Mage Armor, Heroism, FOMovement, Protection (fire, cold, sonic, electricity) Tuesday April 19th, 2011 2:04:21 PM
Snafu wasn't surprised when Skalipy detected the scrying. "Asking for permission isn't exactly my style" he responded. "I needed to try to understand, so I came."
Throughout the tour Snafu's emotions were constantly bombarded but he tried to hide his inner feelings. He was sickened by the treatment of the people on the table, but he couldn't deny that the process seemed to improve Cassie in some way. Then came the story of Skalipy and the young Sharon which was troubling for Snafu to hear, for they were products of a lifetime of suffering.
"Truly I am sorry for the pain you've both had to endure" Snafu said to Skalipy and Sharon. 'Sadly, fear often leads to cruelty, but that was no excuse for the villagers to treat Sharon so."
"Yet, this raises a question in my own mind, for you have taken many people against their will and this creates fear amongst the people. As a result, will more young girls be made to suffer? Would it not be better to ask for volunteers and be open about the possibilities and risks?"
"In any case, I'd like to hear more of the specifics. In what ways does this process strengthen the subject? What are the success rates? How many times have these experiments failed and what are the side effects?"
Every piece of information conjoured more questions in Snafu's mind. For the sake of his own sanity, he needed to try to understand what could lead a person to such cruelty.
"Please Skalipy... please. Tell me all" Snafu pleaded.

Falmar calmly listens to the explanations forthcoming from Skalipy.
We should go soon.. what5 happens if these experiments are interrupted ? we should not let them have a chance.

DM David--- A New Day Dawns --- Wednesday April 20th, 2011 5:49:40 PM
Both Skalipy and SHaron burst into laughter at Snafu's condolences. Skalipy recovers first and speaks, mirth still coloring his voice. " Do not feel sorry for us. Suffering is the grindstone that sharpens the edge of a person's soul. Why do you think I administer these diseases to those Sharon brings me? My Lord teaches that through suffering we are strengthened. The towns folk were weak because they did not kill Sharon when they had the chance. Had she been old enough to control her dual nature, I have no doubt she would have saved her mother by transforming and decimating the town. As it was I had to bind her and stay awake all night making sure she didn't kill me when she was turned by the moon." "Suffering cleanses you, it makes things clear. When asked if you would sacrifice yourself to allow another to live, most people are unsure. They ask what the situation is, as if it would matter. They ask who it would be they were saving, because things like petty grievances or love would cloud their judgment. When actually IN the position where it is themselves or someone else that lives or dies, there is usually no such consideration. Self preservation wins almost every time." " I still have more to show you, unless I have hurt your delicate sensibilities. You have a thicker skin that the woman scrying did, I'll say that much. You are good at heart, That I see, but you have a thirst for knowledge and a willingness to examine a situation before rendering judgment. Come see what else my Lord has taught me to build. He requires a sacrifice to make it active, but I think I have found what he seeks in return. Once he has what he wants he will power the great machine and I will be able to cleanse the Wold and remake it in his own image." Skalipy rises from the desk and leads you to a door at the rear of the workshop. The scrying sensor follows you as you move to the door.
Back in Jarlswolf Dulcet sweats and grinds her teeth to hold the image steady. While they sat it was easier on her, but now that they are moving, it is almost as if she has to walk to keep up with them as well as maintain the spell.
Tishe' (AC 26 HP 107/107 Thursday April 21st, 2011 12:21:48 PM
"They are walking away and not thinking we will arrive, let us go now!"
Tishe' steps away from the cauldron and, ensuring Thar, Seralina, and Falmar are holding her (with no familiars or companions), she casts the Teleport to come in right behind Snafu.
"Take out this pest hole!" she calls to her packmates.

Snafu felt his irritation grow when Skalipy and Sharon laughed at him, but he followed them towards the door anyway. He still wanted to learn more, though mostly for the sake of the victims of this experimentation. However, as far as Skalipy and Sharon were concerned he had made his judgment; they need to be stopped and to face justice.
"Suffering can make you stronger" Snafu agreed. "Some of the things Snafu is most proud of probably wouldn't be if he hadn't suffered. Yet there are other things that have made him stronger, like compassion and love. Without these things Snafu would be like a great ship without a rudder. He could cut through any wave and move like the wind, but the movement would be without direction or purpose."
"Put another way, suffering is like the desert that causes that cactus to grow where nothing else can, whereas compassion is the sun that gives it life and purpose. For without compassion and love Sharon would have never made it to the age of five. And Skalipy... you might not have survived the plague that fell upon your hometown for surely there were people that nursed you from your bed side."
Snafu took a deep breath for he knew that he was treading on very dangerous territory. "I am trying to consider your work with an open-mind despite the alarm bells that are ringing in my heart. Though Sharon may strike me down for saying this, I ask- 'Skalipy is your mind open? Have you considered the other possibilities? Is it possible that compassion is the element that's missing?"
With his semses on high alert, Snafu waited for a response.

Book keeping. Tishe's action this round is to activate the boots and teleport. I need actions from Thar Falmar Serillana Snafu As soon as Tishe says she is Teleporting, Dulcet releases the Greater scrying spell and sight is restored to all of you. Your last sight as you teleport out, is Dulcet collapsing behind her cauldron. You have initiative and are coming into the room with Snafu and Cassie between you and Skalipy, who is standing in the open doorway and is 10 feet from Tishe ( the rest of you are behind Tishe).Sharon is right next to Falmar ( lucky guy, you are in back by random roll). Post your actions and I will post the bad guys this weekend.the room is 30x30 and has some furniture in it, but none so large as to provide cover in these close quarters. AOE spells will likely hit the whole room, including the unfortunates strapped to the tables, just a heads up, you guys normally use targeted spells anyway. OOC Yes, I am a bad DM and I do not have Skalipy ready for combat yet. He is too complicated for me to finish tonight (despite my knowing what his classes and levels are and all that jazz) He will be ready this weekend so that I can rspond to you. DM David They can be silvered while you are blinded, you have used daggers for long enough to be able to do simple things like say sharpen, or coat them without looking, just like soldiers train to assemble their weapons blind. This means you can attack.

ooc: All concerned, Tishe' is teleporting, so that is her action for this round. HOWEVER, the others can still take a full round action! Swing away, Swing away!!!
This is actually a great tactic for higher levels. One person teleports or Dim Doors two of the heavy fighters behind the bad guys, and the heavies get a free full round action without having to move! :-)

Grab Attack RulesHighlight to display spoiler: {If a creature with this special attack hits with the indicated attack (usually a claw or bite attack), it deals normal damage and attempts to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. The creature has the option to conduct the grapple normally, or simply to use the part of its body it used in the grab to hold the opponent. If it chooses to do the latter, it takes a --20 penalty on its CMB check to make and maintain the grapple, but does not gain the grappled condition itself.
A successful hold does not deal any extra damage unless the creature also has the constrict special attack. If the creature does not constrict, each successful grapple check it makes during successive rounds automatically deals the damage indicated for the attack that established the hold. Otherwise, it deals constriction damage as well (the amount is given in the creature's descriptive text).
Creatures with grab receive a +4 bonus on combat maneuver checks made to start and maintain a grapple.
Unless otherwise noted, grab works only against opponents no larger than the same size category as the creature. If the creature can use grab on sizes other than the default, this is noted in the creature's Special Attacks line.}
