DM Cayzle - Visiting Lizards
Wednesday April 13th, 2011 5:41:45 PM

Jet asks if any speak common, but none do.

Alexi notes that they are well if crudely armed with metal-tipped spears and studded armor. A few have bows and arrows, a few have swords.

Garret looks for casters, but notes none. He also sees no dirt monster.

Lehn warns that they do seem to have some kind of bond with the Forest.

Keela asks if the group can come closer. She is polite.

The lizardfolk allow that the group may come closer. One individual seems to be a speaker. He asks what you want, and invites you all to sit and talk.

"Thank you," Keela says as they get close to the lizard-folk. Awkwardly, she sits on the ground--not a maneuver to be attempted while wearing a skirt. To the spokes-lizard, she says, "My name is Keela Larch. I will be translating for you the words of Jet Stormway," gesturing to Jet, "who speaks for our group, but does not speak your language."

DM Cayzle - Why Have You Come?
Friday April 15th, 2011 5:10:05 PM

Keela introduces herself and says that she will translate. The lizards nod. Jet and Garret sit next to her.

Alexi and Lehn stay back, alert.

Zeph remains aloft, piloting the craft.

The lizard says that his name is Swift-Striker, and he is the chief of the village. Why have you come here, he asks, and what do you want. He warns you that his people are poor, with little to trade, unless you seek hatchlings as workers. Those he has to sell, at the right price.

Jet Stormway (AC: 16/15 no dex, HP:68/68 )  d20+15=16 ;
Friday April 15th, 2011 5:47:02 PM

On the outside, Jet remains emotionless, but when he hears the chief speak of selling his young into servitude, it takes all of his effort to keep Adrean in his sheath and free from yet more lizard blood. It takes a moment for him to remember, this is their culture. As long as they do not try to threaten the group or other unwilling races, then he can turn a blind eye to the atrocity.

He takes a deep breath and then another, before he begins. he makes sure to keep eye contact with the leader, so that there can be no doubt, who is being addressed and respected.

"We seek a great noble lizard from a distant place called Al Mathir. We understand your people are poor with wealth, but rich in strength. We did not come here asking for your help but we are willing to pay a reasonable compensation for your information. It is very important that we find this person without blood shed. Gold and silver might not mean much to you, but we carry other goods that you might find useful as well, we have access to more, every once in awhile. Enough to keep the chief and his guards satisfied for some time."

Jet tosses him another skin of wine and offers him the Ranseur as a token of good will. A friendly gift.

Alexi sits close enough to be of aid within seconds but far enough away that he has to pay good attention to hear Keela and Jet. However the wind shifts in his directin and it carries their words perfectly.

Alexi's first reaction to hearing the lizardmen's suggestion about selling their young was of a weird revulsion. As the notion sets in, and knowing nothing of the lizardpeople's reproductive capacity or concern for their young, Alexi considers it not a bad idea after all in raising a lizard. Treated well and taught to fight and do good were valid motivating factors in purchasing one.

Alexi shakes his head at the thought. It'd never work in their group. Too dangerous for the little critter. But having a lizard devoted to you certainly seemed to have its merrits...

DM Cayzle - Gifts Are Always Welcome
Monday April 18th, 2011 6:52:08 PM

Jet explains the group's purpose and offers gifts of wine and iron. Keela and Garret lend a hand with the diplomatic effort as Alexi ponders a purchase.

The lizard chief is clearly pleased with the gifts. "These are worthy offerings," he says. "And we think we know the honorable reptile lord of whom you speak. However, we are charged with ensuring the privacy of our honored noble guest. We might arrange an introduction, however, when he leaves his home and comes to our village for a visit. He does that several times a year."

"To lead you to his sanctuary would be dangerous, for we would not want to anger him. He values his solitude."

The chief seems more apologetic than angry.

If you make a Sense Motive check vs DC20, then Highlight to display spoiler: {You think that richer gifts might inspire the bravery in them needed to guide you into this great danger.}

Monday April 18th, 2011 7:43:31 PM

Jet is fully aware of Keelas tone when she translates the chiefs words. He bows to the mighty lizard known as Swift-Striker.

"We understand such dangers exist and I am sure having friends like yourself will do our needs well. However, we do not at all wish for anyone to be either angry or mistrustful of our greetings. We have once already fought the land which has much anger to trespassers. We are on a mission of peace to avoid war. Please, go to this honorable reptile lord that you acknowledge and ask him if we can speak with him. With his consent, we will know we are welcome and it will be then that many gifts will be given to our friends, to lead us there. Please tell him that our mission is as important to the lizards and him as it is for other races. Al Mathir and it's armies are close, very close and it will not be long before they come here as well. Please, tell him these words and accept with good will our future gifts for doing so."

Jet will not allow a strong race to believe they are stronger then the negotiators. They must understand, with steel and magic comes great strength. What is to keep these people from ambushing and attacking while asleep to conquer and obtain their items? The assurance that the negotiators are not stupid and they are packing heavy metal.

With that and jet considering the negotiations over for now, he brakes out more drink for the socializing to begin, sure to keep enough for a week of morning rituals. At some point, he will get across to the lizard race, "These lands are tough. Only the strong survive. Please know, we have traveled far and we have fought against Al Mathir. If not for our employers losing wealth, some of us would rather continue fighting. Thus is the warrior spirit."

That night, if any of them want to get a friendly game of fistacuffs going, jet wouldn't mind waking up with a few bruises.

Wednesday April 20th, 2011 10:15:51 AM

Well, my friends, although your distracted DM missed a post yesterday, he was very busy nonetheless working to enhance your game-playing experiences in the Wold!

First, we have a new player joining us, Ezra, who is currently creating his PC.

Second, the Woldipedia links on this page have been updated, as have the game description and icon on this page. (Well, I fixed the icon and the blurb in the game manager, but the blurb change has not yet trickled down. I hope it will have by the time you click the link.)

Third, the actual wiki pages have been brought up to date. Check out the Uncharted Heroes Game Page, the old Uncharted Lands Game Page, and the geography pages on The Floating City, Bryn Baraz, The Crying Woods, and The Great Prairie that lies between them.

So despite your fears, here is proof positive that your DM loves you all!

Post on the way.

Jet (with Keela translating) asks the lizard chief to go ask permission for the party to meet the exiled noble, and after that there will be gifts.

Alexi enjoys listening to Jet.

Zeph suggests giving them Avis.

Garret thinks the flying craft is too useful and valuable.

Swift-Striker Nods, drinks a bit more, and says, "No."

"You give us more gifts, we lead you near to the hermit's cave, and then YOU interrupt him," says the chief. "I had good warriors die from interrupting the noble. He does not welcome 'distractions,' as he calls them."

When someone asks for someone elses personal items, it is no longer a gift but a price to pay. So be specific, so we know where we stand and if we will agree to those terms!"

Jet will also try to find out in the conversation, how many days walking the hermits cave is from their destination and if possible, which direction it is.

IC: Alexi is not close enough to determine their motives but guesses their are more or less bluffing to see what we really have. Too bad they chose not use their hats. Appearing like the hermit noble would have made a difference, Alexi muses.

They want to make friends or or piss us off, their choice, but the numbers don't look good for them if they want to make money off our emplyers instead of us!!!

The dim side is, the group is relying on Jet for negotiations and whatever he fails to observe, even by one (Whatever it is others might see he doesn't) is left to the one handling business. he will not llow other to manipulate his friends, even if he is not in charge.

DM Cayzle - Thanks! We Have To Think About It! Bye!
Thursday April 21st, 2011 6:25:58 PM

Jet gives a blustery speech, and the lizardman chief visibly blanches even before Keela translates. Jet seems visibly angry, and his bluff seems quite sincere.

Garret plays along and does his best to aid Jet's efforts. He wonders what the lizards might like in trade.

Keela suggests giving them a Tear.

Alexi amuses himself with thoughts of how this could have gone had they been in disguise. He glares at Zeph for thinking of giving up the party's hard-won flying machine.

The chief bows his head respectfully when Jet and Garret are finished. He asks Keela to tell Jet that they hope they have not angered him. They will think hard on what he has said, and will decide in a private council about how they can help their new friends.

"Please tell your chief," he says to Keela, "that we will send a messenger to this place at the same time tomorrow, and then everyone will be satisfied, I'm sure."

No sense motive needed -- the chief is scared and wants to back down. He does not, by the way, give any indication of distance or direction to the hermit noble's dwelling.

Swift-Striker rises, and with him, all the other lizardfolk get up too. They will back away slowly, unarmed, until they are 50 ft away. If you have not stopped them, they will turn then and walk back to their village.

I'm not up for a slaughter of a village just because they won't take us to a fellow they don't even particularly like. We don't know where the hermit is, but these lizards don't look like they're about to attack us yet, either. How about we stay here in a camp, alert for attacks, just in case, but then send out our flying crews into the surrounding area to see what else they might be able to spot? We might spot something, or our continued presence here, without attacking, might just influence the chief a bit." He looks over at the pond and continues, "You'd think that with us so near their young they might be willing to negotiate again soon."

Monday April 25th, 2011 6:09:06 PM

Jet calls to the young lizardman and asks him to stay for a few questions. His voice is calm and friendly, and with Keela translating, these words serve to make him pause. He looks at you with equal parts fear, curiosity, and eagerness.

In the meantime, at Garret's suggestion, Zeph takes the flying machine up for a bit of scouting.

Alexi is amused, seeing as Zeph is hogging all the scouting fun. Still, Alexi chooses to watch Jet and Keela question the youngster.

Zeph, from above in the flying craft, goes a-looking. He sees that the lizard village shows signs of fortification since the last time he was there. The windows and doors of the huts are boarded shut, and there are trenches around and between the buildings.

Circling further out, Zeph sees a person and an animal, walking the land at the edge of the Woods.

"So there I was, burrowing a hand-span underneath the biggest den of wolves in three valleys when my nose hits something soft."

"Aquifer mud?"

"Ha, I wish! It was a corpse! The farmers the wolves had just finished eating had buried some grandmother a few weeks before and I tore right into her worm-eaten corpse!"

"Ugh, gross."

"I know, right? She was mostly liquid from the worms and beetles and I had this pungent fountain of gore and bones spill into my nice little tunnel."

"What happened?"

"I vomited, of course. Then I scrambled backward as much as I could, but there isn't a lot of wiggle room when you're digging. Especially through shale, since it crumbles like no one's business. The wolves woke up and spent the rest of the day trying to find me. I finally... hey, who're they?"

You see a tall, lanky human walking beside an enormous badger. The man is bare-chested, with leather leggings and numerous pouches at his belt. His hair is shoulder-length pale blond and matted with outdoor living. The badger beside him is enormous, roughly the size of a healthy draft horse.

I have a great announcement. Jim C will be joining this game as my co-DM as soon as he is up to speed and ready to leap in. He'll e-mail you all so that you can have his address. Or I will.

Anyway, I expect game quality to take a great leap up -- because he will help me when I miss posts, because his great ideas will make the modules more fun, and because I will be struggling to bring my best DM Game to the table -- lest he show me up, after which you will all petition Jerry to just give me the boot and let him do the job entirely.

Seriously, when I had the chance to join a second game in the Wold, I joined the one he was DMing. That says it all.

Zeph is surprised to see another pink-skinned humanoid in this forest, as he was looking for lizards and such.
He swoops down to Raul in Avis and looks out of the cockpit curiously.

"Well hello there good sir. Quite frankly, I was going to ask you the same question, are you lost?"

Then Zeph notices the Giant Badger walking amiably by the large man's side.
Not wanting to be rude, Zeph waves at the Badger as well and says, "My name is Zeph Illidian, elf of the culverwood. My friends and I are scouting out the forest looking for an outcast Lizard Prince that could hold the key to taking down an evil empire."
After a brief pause, "And what are you two kind gents up to?"

Co-DM Cayzle - Greetings and Answers
Tuesday April 26th, 2011 9:49:22 AM

Greetings

Zeph, calling down from a hovering flying craft that looks something like a triangular wagon with no wheels, answers the halloo of a man and his giant pet badger. Raul figures anyone out here in the wilds is likely lost. Maybe this Zeph fellow is looking for someone who is lost.

Answers

The youthful lizard seems more at ease under the generous care of Keela and Jet, as Garret and Alexi watch from a short distance away. He manages to stammer out that the Hermit Lizard lives somewhere to the east, outside the tribe's normal hunting ground, and that he actually lives in the Crying Woods.

If you offer him any presents, he says no to anything made of metal or wood. He says he wants to be one of those who can enter the Woods, who swear to use no metal items nor wood items.

"Oh, great. An elf. And he smells like lizards."

"I know, but maybe they just ran across a few of them. We don't want to pick a fight with someone who just happens to smell like lizards. That, and they have a flying machine, so I don't think we should be rude."

"Hmph, nothing good ever came from leaving good soil."

"I'm sure they have a good reason. Let's find out."

The human waves up to the elf in the flying craft. "Pleased to meet you. I am Raul Julio Blanco y Montserrat, Swornclaw of the Viridian Circle. Or 'dirty vagrant,' depending on who you ask. This is my esteemed companion Oliver Rafael Domingo de Serenza."

"Ooo, very nice."

"Thanks, I've been practicing."

"You can call him 'Ollie,' for short. We are not lost, because you need to have a destination in order to be lost. And since we are simply enjoying a stroll, you could say we are not currently occupied. I am aware of this lizard of which you speak. I am also aware that you carry the stink of the lizardmen on you. Tell me, are you with them?"

Garret Goodbarrel [AC:27/27/19 HP:44/44 Ki:8/9]
Tuesday April 26th, 2011 2:42:27 PM

Garret watches the conversation with the young lizard with interest. When he mentions the lack of wood and metal, he looks down at himself and notices that he has neither at the moment and he smiles. Then he frowns and wonders why the land attacked him, after all.

His wandering thoughts are interrupted by the arrival of the dirty vagrant. Indeed, from this distance, he did look like a dirty vagrant. But Garret imagined that he didn't look much better at the moment. Garret started forward as he looked at the giant badger. He hears the man introduce him as Ollie and calls out, "Ollie? Well, he looks like a badger, but I've never in my life seen one anywhere near that large! Can he..." then Garret turns and asks the badger directly, "Can you speak our language?"

Raul Blanco [AC: 20/15/16 HP: 118/118]

The giant badger rumbles and grumbles, making crude pantomime gestures. Rauls chuckles. "I am afraid that he cannot. He understands the Common tongue, but lacks the ability to speak. He and I speak our own language together."

"He's a small one."

"He is, isn't he? What is your name, friend? And are you with the lizards?"

Jet, Alexi wasn't close enough for Jet to hear him mutter. I was just posting something to post. But Garret could have been there with him.

Welcome to the game Raul. Don't be shy.

IC: "I wonder if the Hats of Disguise can fool the crying woods," Alexi ponders outloud.

Jet gives him good food and wine and talks about the Crying Wood. "So why do you think your chief took that steel weapon?"

Lehn glanced around at the new arrival, the goings on and, most particularly, at the lizard creatures. How did such small, frog-like babies grow up to be these creatures? Nature, in all its forms, was mysterious indeed.

OOC: I apologize for my absence. I will be catching up soon.

Zeph Illidian HP 69/69 AC 18/17/12 CMD 21

Zeph tries to relay to Raul why he smells like lizards and is looking for one, but is not allied to them, "Well, you see, an evil nation of lizardfolk live on a floating city called Al Mathir. They roam around on their city and threaten civilizations into paying them tribute. We heard a prophecy that an exiled noble lizard would be key to taking down the empire. We have fought the lizards of Al Mathir and stole this Avis craft from them."

Keela translates, but her curiosity gets the best of her.

"Excuse me," she says to the young lizard-man. "I have to ask: why no metal or wood?"

Co-DM Cayzle - I Know Why The Crying Woods Weep
Wednesday April 27th, 2011 12:46:56 PM

The lizard warrior in training explains that the village is on the edge of the Crying Woods, but not in it. If you do not want to go in it, you can use wood and metal and fire. But if you want to be able to enter the Woods, you cannot use items made of trees or plants. How would you like it if a visitor came to your house wearing clothes made of the bones and skin of your family? And no metal, for the same reason -- if murderers had stabbed your family to death, you might look with fear on those who carry blades to your door.

This young lizard hopes to join with those lizards who enter the Woods and keep the grand bargain not to use fire or wood or metal.

==========

Meanwhile, with Zeph hovering slowly in Avis as Ollie and Raul walk alongside, it does not take long to get back to the camp. Zeph explains a little about Al Mathir. There, Raul meets Garret first, and introduces Ollie. Lehn continues to be interested in the hatchlings.

Raul Blanco [AC: 20/15/16 HP: 118/118]
Wednesday April 27th, 2011 1:36:02 PM

As Raul and Ollie enter the camp, the other party members get a better look at the two of them. Raul has numerous scars in his skin and a variety of callouses on his joints. The bottoms of his feet are thick as shoe soles. More interesting, though, are his claws and teeth. Where a normal human has round, short pink fingers, Raul's fingers are elongated and hardened, ending in darkened talons instead of fingertips. His teeth are likewise more feral, with significantly elongated and sharpened incisors and canines. Ollie looks about the camp with intelligent eyes, sniffing deeply to familiarize himself with the encampment.

"They smell... they smell... strange."

"How so?"

"I don't know, but their scent is definitely not normal."

Raul discreetly sniffs the air near Zeph.

"You mean they smell clean?"

"Yes, that's it! Not earthy or stony at all. I'm not liking it."

"You know, not everyone burrows in the ground."

"Well, of course they don't. There has to be some disreputable people in the world, right?"

"Let's just focus, 'kay? They want to get that high-lizard and we should help."

"Why yes, friend. I happen to be familiar with the insufferable cad of which you speak. I suppose even the lowly and dishonorable lizardmen found him to be intolerable and thrust him out. He is east of here, on the edge of the Crying Wood. As long as we take some precautions then we should have no difficulty in reaching him." Raul hesitates for a moment. "You do plan on killing it, correct?"

Garret Goodbarrel [AC:27/27/19 HP:44/44 Ki:8/9]
Wednesday April 27th, 2011 3:08:30 PM

As the newcomer heads towards the camp, Garret continues, "Oh, do forgive my manners. Indeed, I am Garret Goodbarrel, of the Windbourne Hills. And I certainly not with the lizards. I have seen quite enough lizards in the past months, yet it appears the fates have decided that I have not seen enough of them."

As they approach the camp, Garret points out the others, "That one there is Jet, up in the sky, you have already met Zeph, here is Alexi, Keela, and Lehn."

When they approach, Garret watches the massive badger with interest. He says to the badger, "You are quite powerful looking. I hope that we can be friends, as I would hate to be an enemy of yours."

When Raul mentions the lizard, Garret says, "Well, we have need to talk to it, at first..."

Zeph Illidian HP 69/69 AC 18/17/12 CMD 21
Wednesday April 27th, 2011 6:48:34 PM

Zeph replies to Raul, "Kill!? I really don't think that was the plan. I thought that the exiled prince would help us take down Al Mathir... or at least strike a blow to the floating fortress city. Enemy of my enemy is my friend, eh?"

If Zeph overhears why the woods are angry, he says, "I sympathize with the land here. It is only natural to hunger for revenge against those who would seek to harm you."

And that gives Zeph an idea.

He removes from his pack a vial of blood that he collected from the lizardfolk of Al Mathir after the last battle and begins to pray, Jancassis, show me those who yearn for vengeance against the lizards of Al Mathir.
He then casts Detect Victim

"I'm not liking this."

"There is precious little that you like beyond food, my friend."

"I find it an acceptable philosophy in life. Don't you?"

"There are a few things. Most of them involve the fairer sex, but that's for later."

Raul clears his throat. "Well, you see, the lizards are... how do I put this? Filthy, murderous, dishonorable, disgusting, putrid, vile, despicable vermin?"

"And treacherous."

"And treacherous? Does that make sense, Senor Goodbarrel? I do not have personal reasons for cleansing the land of these lizards so much as the land demands it of me. They are invaders, deserving of neither mercy nor patience from the inhabitants of these lands. Do you understand my interests now?"

"Uhm...," she falters. Then, in Common, to her friends and the stranger, she says, "Perhaps this is a better conversation for another time."

To the lizard-man, in Draconic, she says, "We would be very grateful if you could but tell us where the Hermit Lizard lives. We do not need you to show us the way, and we will tell no one of your involvement."

Co-DM Cayzle - Off To See The Wizard
Thursday April 28th, 2011 4:18:45 PM

As Zeph, Raul, and his badger friend meet the rest of our heroes, it becomes clear that Raul has a certain ... animosity, say, toward humanoids of a reptilian nature. Raul seems willing to help the party kill the Al Mathir hermit.

Garret makes introductions and begins the diplomatic job of explaining that the party is not seeking to destroy EVERY lizardman.

Zeph says he understood the hermit might ally with the party to fight Al Mathir.

Jet, meanwhile, perceives the newcomer as a potential threat, and makes a show of maintaining his weaponry.

Meanwhile, looking for insight or inspiration, Zeph uses a magic spell to see if there are any hereabouts who have been the victims of Al Mathir. Alas, in a word, no. Clever idea, though.

Garret asks why Raul hates the lizards, and gets a bit of an earful.

The young lizard warrior, maybe getting a vibe from the badger and his toothy friend, decides to get up and walk slowly away. Nonetheless, it seems you have enough to go by, now.

It might be useful, at this point, to recall the prophetic verse that brought you to this place:

Away from ocean, stream, or rain it liess
It liess in truth where liess leap up for play.
Amid the nayss, the choruss of the ayess,
That lap, and leap, and loft it on itss way.

But one leapss up, retreating in retreat,
And liess no longer, happy not to fly.
He wallowss in disgrace, despair, defeat.
A prince no more, a rogue, a-rant, awry.

So seek the place where weeping willowss wail.
He dwellss as if a man in monkey's clan.
But where? A dwarf should know, but mind may fail.
And only doom will follow other plan.

Just offer him the blood, the blood he cravess,
And then there might be luck in what he savess.

Sitting apart, Alexi only catches bits and pieces of Jet and Keela's conversation with the lizard warrior trainee, but that is alright. He knows the two will tell the rest what transpired. And Alexi misses the last bit as a newcomer nears the group, followed by Avis.

From his distance, it, he, looks like Fatine's cousin! Or what Fatine's cousin would look like if she had one. Although Feet of Mist, her puma, was far more regal than the critter following alongside the stranger.

Maybe this could be Fatine's poor, not-so-well-off cousin. Alexi looks up to the sky to see if he sees a bird. "Wonder what kind it would be?" he mutters. "Col was a raven, maybe this stranger has a magpie. That would be fitting, it would seem."

Alexi takes in the newcomer with wide eyes, and mutters to himself. That's not unusual for Alexi!

Jet offers the young lizard a wineskin -- which he takes with a nod and then keeps walking.

Jet looks closely at Raul ... especially at the less human aspects of the fellow. Is this a demon? A monster? But the bard knows from some of the stranger things that exist in the Wold, and recognizes a Lost Child. Those are people, not monsters, although they tend to turn their backs on civilization and forge powerful bonds with an animal instead of with other people. Over time, they come to resemble the creatures they befriend, even developing claws and fangs.

You have some very general directions from the lizard warrior, and Raul claims to know the one you seek. Is it time to set out?

OOC: Only two players have posted since the last DM post? Ugh.

Keela stands, and brushes off her skirt. "Well, I supposed we'd best be tracking down this lizard person," she says. "Though we still haven't figured out the rest of the riddle. 'A dwarf should know, but mind may fail?' And what is 'the blood he craves?' I hope it's metaphorical blood."

And I do understand being asked by the land to help it out. But his particular lizard, well, it may be a bit different. Surely, just as you see people who are good and people who are evil, you must be able to imagine that some lizards could be the same."

"In fact, until we talk to this lizard, we're not sure, but this one may even be helping the land, and may be an outcast simply because he wouldn't help his fellow lizards destroy the land. So, do you think we might be able to head there without being absolutely certain that this one needs to die right now?"

Surely there's a teahouse
with a view of plum trees
on Death mountain, too.
- Shiyo, 1703

Grens the young lizard warrior, who had come to deliver his chieftains' message, curiously sniffed the air. Upon thoughtful reflection, he spoke slowly--as was his way, "The rain is coming. I will not have a problem with it--I am well suited for this weather and it will be welcomed by me and my people as we shed our skins." Several in the group noted that indeed their little lizard companion was just being to molt. "But I think you bare skins will not enjoy it as much. With it come strong winds and your flying craft will be endangered if it flies where the birds would normally gather." Looking off in the distance, one could see the storm clouds moving towards the group and would most likely reach them by nightfall. All around them was open prairie, with a few trees and scrubs scattered here and there with little to no shelter from the oncoming storm. "We best be off, maybe we will find a grove of trees, or a rocky outcropping--your flying craft could find it for us and lead us as we head towards the Crying Woods." With little more said, the group heads out in the direction Raul indicates, seconded by Grens.

By nightfall the group had found a stand of trees near a broken hill, it was about this time the rains started. Feeble at first, then in due time it came down in hammered sheets of torrential agony. Not one crevice, one fold or one shielded side went unsoaked. Far off in some muddy town--where the rain was unabated; where a victims screams were drowned in the muck; where children's cries went unheard; and where lover's dreams were smothered in the gloom of despair and hopelessness--even they would call this storm, hideous.

The Avis could not be used in such weather, and even when turned on its side it afforded some relief but not enough. It seemed the rain would come at the group from all directions, all at once--then they saw it; Tornado. A shrill cry went up from Grens when he saw it, but it was not one of terror, it was glee. Had the young lizard lost his mind? The direction the whirlwind was heading would pass near the group, but not envelope them. It was a sight to see; lightning flashed in its core, and it had turned the sky a dark green at sunset. The group watched in horrid fascination as Grens, stripped of all he wore, ran out to meet the tornado. It buffeted him severely, but could not stay his desire to join the vortex. Upon nearly reaching the breakpoint of life and death--between escaping and being swallowed whole, Grens turned back to the group and yelled something. What he said could not be heard over the violent din of the storm--but he said it with a smile, then he was gone.

Two days later, the storm now nothing more than a morning drizzle, the group had reached the edge of the Crying Woods and settled down for the night. Waterlogged and just now able to use the Avis to its full ability, the somber crew made camp and spoke of what was to come.

DM Jim:
A few things to note for your discussion:
I have placed you near the Woods, but how close to the Woods will you make camp?
Anyone making a campfire?
Discuss your plan of approach.
Upon entering the Crying Woods, will you take any metal and wood items?
How will you find the exact spot?
How will you approach it if found?(this one may need some scouting info first, so don't worry too much about it.)

Thanks and it's been a pleasure to finally write something for the game :)

OOC (since there is a bunch of topics):

1. I don't know too much about the Crying Wood's lethality, but I'm guessing 100 yards from the tree-line would be safe?
2. My animal companion Ollie can burrow a Large-sized, ten-foot deep hole in six seconds thanks to his burrow speed. Although this dirt typically fills in behind him when moving, I'm guessing that if he were excavating earth it would be of a comparable volume. He could dig a warren for us in a pretty short amount of time to give us a cozy cave to sleep through the night. Add a camouflage bluff at the entrance and we would be good to go. Thoughts?
3. I'm going to venture a guess that we should leave all metal and wooden items in a safe place outside of the woods. We could wrap it in a blanket or backpack and bury it for safekeeping.
4. I'm guessing you guys have some good methods of recon for finding the actual location?

Garret Goodbarrel [AC:27/27/19 HP:44/44 Ki:8/9]

Garret watches the massive storm with great interest and actually smiles when Gren shouts for joy at the sight of the tornado. Garret likes new things, and this tornado is certainly that for him. The howling wind keeps him from talking about it while it blows.

After the storm clears, Garret looks at Jet and Alexi as he says, "We've seen what this land can do. While leaving behind metal and wood does not bother me, how are you two feeling about that? I think we would be best served by leaving our things behind, but I know that would make you two quite vulnerable. Are you willing to go on without your metal, or would you prefer to wait here, behind. After seeing what Ollie can do, I bet he could make us a safe place to store our goods while we travel."

He looks over at Avis and wonders, "I am thinking we could still use Avis for some spotting, but if it were to land in there, I think we'd be destroyed rather quickly. Let's stay here a bit, send Avis in for some scouting out as far as you can make it, then we'll see what we can do after that."

[A couple of OOC points for clarification. Our craft is not THE Avis; her name is Avis. Also, Keela's SOP is to prepare an extended Rope Trick each day for those who want to sleep in it, and an Alarm spell to help protect the campsite. The horses, alas, would be on their own, but I think the rest of the party would be comfortable enough in heavy weather.]

"I've been thinking it over," Keela says, "and I'm not sure it's practical to leave wood and metal behind. Anyone wearing lace-up boots probably has metal grommets or hooks. Belts have buckles--will everyone's trousers stay up without them? And how long are we planning to stay there? I don't think we have cups or bowls or plates or utensils that aren't made of metal or wood. Or both."

Zeph lands Avis a few hundred yards from the woods and tries to tie it down when the storm brews. When the rains begin, Zeph casts Tiny Hut and tells anyone who wishes to stay dry to get in the shelter. A fire may not be necessary since the Hut is quite comfortable, it lasts for 10hours under Zeph's own power, but can be extended via his rod of Metamagic Extend to 20hours.

The young lizard's actions are utterly confusing, "Did he just commit suicide?!" He wracks his brain for information on what the young lizard may have been trying to accomplish (knowledge history = 15, knowledge local =21)

Zeph says his opinion, "Maybe everyone who wishes to keep metal or wooden items could fly with me in Avis. I wont land it in the forest, since a large domesticated box is sure to arouse anger in the forest. If not, then I could store my sword in my Handy Haversack; do you think the woods would be able to divine the contents of an extradimensional space?"

With that, Zeph takes Garret's advice and powers up Avis, "All aboard who's scouting aboard." He will scout to the east of the LizardFolk village, the direction Gren stated. (Perception =25)

"We can put our weapons and armor in the cargo hold of Avis and let Zeph fly around with them while we find this noble, but I'm not going to bury them somewhere just to know we are being watched by the less noble lizards we have spoke with and have them take our gear."

"I suggest we do what we did before. Have Keela write us up three or four of those notes and just drop them in the area we think the noble is in. From what I remember about the people, from the book we found, the nobles are great spell casters. They can likely send us a message through one form of spell or another."

I'm not exactly sure why you feel we are all worth so little that we can't attempt a bit of diplomacy by mail first. It is as you said, he doesn't want to be found, so what do you think is going to happen when we do find him as we are tresspassing without any armor or weapons, huh? That type of foolishness would have never occured when I had people following me! If ever you want me to commit suicide, we will have serious issues."

If Keela doesn't want to take down the words that should be said by note, Jet will do it in common, Abyssal and Infernal, hoping the creature will understand at least one of those languages.

"Dear Noble Lord of Al Mathir. We will bring to you the blood you crave, if the deed will be honorable, in exchange for information on Al Mathir! My name is Jet Stormway and we await some form of communications from you on this matter."

Taking the "Notes", (Jet makes four) he ties them to rocks and joins Zeph in Avis.

He watches Jet with some interest, "Dropping notes may be a good idea to start diplomacy, or it may be a good way to give the noble a heads up to our presence and he will prepare defenses. Are we to assume he will react any differently than these primitive lizards?"

But nonetheless, Zeph will gladly take assist Jet in delivering the letters.

Lastly, Zeph says, "I do suggest that Raul and Ollie stay on the ground, possibly with Garret and Lehn, since none of you guys seem to need metal or wood. Keela, your ability to blast things from up high may be needed." he says, knowing the young wizardess still fears the sky.

My whole life long I've sharpened my sword
And now, face to face with death
I unsheathe it, and lo--
The blade is broken--
Alas!

- Soto, 1568

The supple wood of Avis creaked under the weight of those that boarded her. The metal frame that lay inside her contradicted the deceptive fragility of her windswept features as those inside made themselves comfortable for the upcoming journey. Slowly she rose in the air; gentle breezes flowed over her like those of gossamer fingers caressing a ladies hair.

Before her lay the dark, dense expanse of the Crying Woods; Uniform in green and brown, from her vantage point and those of her passengers, across the undulating forest a break in the carpet of trees could be seen. In that area devoid of trees was a small lake--near it a small butte where immediate to its apex, a small waterfall flowed to meet the lake. Could this be where the hermit lived? Those in Avis could travel there in but five minutes if not less, yet those on the ground would have a difficult way of it and would take several hours. Decisions, decisions...

"Droping a note is the best way. If it alerts him, so what? We are going to alert him by trampling throught the forest anyway. By the way, how is he to reply? Make it clear in the note where to leave a reply, 'Yes' or 'No'."

Alexi likes the idea of storing their gear in Avis and suggests. "Why should we trample in the forest at all? Avis will take us there. Jet, for his part, using magic, can float down to the ground to meet the lizard noble. Others can be lowered by rope. I'll make a length of knotted rope for ease of descent and climbing."

"Jet, Keela, and others not dependent on metal or wood can be the Representatives with Jet as the spokesman. Us others remain in Avis, alert for any trouble from the forest."

Alexi also suggests that since the horses can't go, that the badger remain with them. If they get spooked, at least he can point their general directin of flight.

"As for my haversack, it has buckles and fasceners. It would be great to store my armor and weapons inside but if the woods can detect even a metal buckle, then that trick won't work."

Backtracking a bit: Alexi introduces himself to Raul, and thus to Ollie. Speaking to a badger is awkward, but having seen Jet talk to Bantom, his horse, and the horse reply in a smart retort, Alexi manages OK.

While Zeph fly's Avis, Jet ties himself in to the cargo hold with little rings he installed when he rebuilt the craft for a medium sized pilot.

He looks for key areas that would provide protection from the wind or large cave mouths where a humanoid might want to live. It would be so much easier if he saw a hut or something but it likely won't be that easy. Avis hovers gently over the camp as Jet spies out across the forest--morning rays of light crisscross the landscape as dark thunderclouds traverse the sky, blotting out the sun here and there. It'll rain again tonight, Jet thought to himself, then he saw something out of place. At the base of the waterfall there were two statues resembling mountain lions, one on either side of the falls. Perhaps this was indeed the location of the noble hermit.

OOC: I need a decision of who goes via Avis and who travels overland, then I can move the group along. Splitting up is probably not the wisest idea.

I'm pretty sure we decided that Avis could not handle the combined weight of everyone, and certainly can't with the added weight of Ollie, and it just plain wasn't large enough to physically fit everyone in, anyway. Jet will drop the four notes at key locations like I said in the previous post, including the water fall area.

When we get back to camp, we wait a day or two. No need to enter until invited. If on the next day we fly over head and the rock is untouched, we will drop something in the water fall to disturb it and get somethings attention.

Besides the rain, what is the rush, except to be careless?

Dm Jim: No rush, it just wasn't made clear what the plan was as different people were doing different things.

OOC: for the Note Dropping, only a few need to go, Jet and pilot, of course, and a couple of others.
For the main treck, that would depend on whether the lizard noble wants to see all of us or just a few of us.

However, if we take the horses in, with their saddles and such and all that metal from the saddle trappings, what will the forest do? Maybe the forest doesn't care about buckles, sinches, and buttons.

IC: Alexi sits and watches the forest while waiting for Avis to return from delivering the note. "I wonder how much metal and what kind of metal the forest hates? Would It care about a pouch of coins? A belt buckle? I think we should experiment and see. I volunteer to go in and see. I'll see what happens when I'm just wearing my clothes with my belt. Then add a pouch of coins, then carrying a saddle, and so forth until I get a hostile reaction.

"We can do that while we wait for the response."

Lightning flickers
only in the North;
the moon is overcast.

-Hachiro, 1868

Deciding that it's better to be invited than to intrude, the group chooses diplomacy over brute strength. Jet and a few others head off over the Crying Woods at a steady pace. Avis glides gently on the headwinds and makes short time of the trek to the warterfall. Upon arriving, the scouting group notices that indeed there are two mountain lions at the base of the waterfall and a narrow path that leads away from them to a small beach area. However, upon closer examination, yet still above the treetops, the mountain lions seem not to be made of flesh and bone, but wood and vines. It is decided to drop the notes along the beach and path, otherwise it would end up in the water and become useless. After this deed is done, Avis and it's passengers return to the main camp to wait for a reply, if it ever comes.

Later than night, the moon glows bright, casting shadows and creating spectre's where there are none. The Woods are teeming with life and even the incoming rain does little to squelch the fervent mating calls of some of the more boisterous denizens of the forest. As is standard procedure, a rope trick spell is used to prevent any inconvenience to the group from the weather, but the horses and poor Avis languish out in the foul weather.

Near midnight the horses start to go insane, rousing the group from their slumber, but it is over before anyone in the group can see the intruder. No horses are harmed and nothing looks disturbed, but there is a sealed scroll case made of bark and twine, sitting near the fire where there had been none before. Wary of a trap, the group is on guard but nothing attacks them as they go to investigate. What they find inside the scroll case is a small note, scribbled on dirty parchment with a crude charcoal stick and all it said was:

Noon. Tea.

Jet is well pleased by the results and does not lord it over the halfling. Garret has to look up way to much as it is.

With some quick calculations, he figures out how long the walk would be from their current location, with any of the obvious natural hazards that might be between them and their host to determine when they have to leave to be just a few minutes early.

At this time, he takes off all wood and metal and leaves them with Avis, excited that they get to meet one of their enemy's in person to learn more about this city in the sky.

Tea... I hope he has some fine Fargunian whiskey to go in that tea! Maybe it is a she? Do we know yet? Best not to assume until the gender is specific.

I'm afraid that if the woods attack you because of the buckles, then it may remember you and your friends, but of course I have no way of knowing. I suggest we all do what we can to leave behind as much metal and wood as is practical, then we head in tomorrow for tea, apparently."

With that, Zeph begins to place his metal and wood items inside Avis, but then he pauses, "The only other option I see is flying Avis over the waterfall to drop off some negotiators. But that would leave several of us behind. And I also think that any trek through the forest should be done together."

If everyone agrees, Zeph will prep a Tiny Hut spell, Extended to last 20hours, and cast it over Avis and any gear left behind, as to not anger the forest.

Jet preps for the noon meet by divesting himself of his metal and wood items. It is hard to judge how long it will take to walk throught he thick jungle, but call it three hours, to be on the safe side, and it is clear that the group will need to move out soon.

[OOC: Assume you woke to find the note at midnight, that sunrise is a 6 am, and that you have to leave by 9 am to get there on time, you think.]

Garret concurs and suggests leaving behind as much metal as possible.

Raul cautions against drinking anything the hermit offers. After looking Avis over, he deduces it requires a medium or small pilot, and can carry up to 8 small creatures, 4 medium ones, or one large one as passenger(s).

Zeph suggests hiding Avis in a Tiny Hut and everyone walking in together. You think that the jungle will be too dense to allow the easy passage of the horses. Honestly, Ollie will have a hard time of it, but his intelligence, bulk, and nimbleness give him advantages the horses lack.

Keela, wondering why her Alarm was not triggered, voices her concern.

Perceptive Alexi notes footprints and tracks -- of one or several very small creatures -- that seem to have entered and left the area. Maybe they were too small to have set off the alarm? The tracks are odd -- like bird feet, maybe? But why would a bird be walking rather than flying?

Any PC may take a look and make some knowledge checks:

Know Religion or Arcana DC15: Highlight to display spoiler: {Maybe they were made by skeletons or undead?}
Know Religion or Arcana DC25: Highlight to display spoiler: {Not undead! Something else!}

Alexi sets about to make some simple weapons. Make Craft Weapon checks vs DC12. Note that Craft is a skill that can be used untrained with an Int check. Also note that per the rules, the time required to make an item depends on its cost. Per the rules, Quarterstaves, Clubs, and Slings have no cost and therefore can be made for free very quickly. I also rule that sling stones (not bullets) also have zero cost. Sling stones do 1d3 damage for medium and 1d2 for small creatures, and suffer a -1 penalty to hit.

Those who need rest return to sleep. Others linger over early early morning bacon. But soon it will be morning and time to take a walk. Marching order? Any precautions? You know the underbrush will be thick -- any plans for coping with that, considering you may not wish to chop your way through the more tangled patches?

Keela has to have the tracks pointed out to her, but once she sees them..."No. Not undead," she says definitely [Arcana 31]. "Not a natural animal either. I don't know what that was. A construct maybe?"

Preparing to enter the wood, Keela removes her Ring of Protection, her Headband of Intellect, and her Belt of Incredible Dexterity. She also swaps her sturdy boots with the metal hooks for a pair of metal-free soft shoes. "I'm going to wear right through these," she murmurs. Then she excuses herself for a few minutes so she can remove her corset. She dons an extra camisole under her blouse, which in no way makes up for a total lack of support. She re-ties her Cloak of Resistance and grabs her wand, but her staff has to be left behind.

"All right, let's get this over with," she says.

Jet volunteers to lead the way, making sure not to lose the group with his special Travel domain skills.

"Let us act like invited guests until our host gives us a reason not to. The lions I saw were not real either. This being may have all sorts of stick type creatures serving it."

OOC: it's not like Keela can go into the woods and hide behind a tree to change clothes. heh, so let's all make a circle and... oh, well, that won't work either, I suppose... blush

Before entering the woods, Zeph uses his Rod of Metamagic Extend to power an extended Mage Armor on himself and says, "You can never be too careful. Anyone else want one?"

(OOC: How much does a Wand of mage armor cost anyways? We shoulda got one from Katarina. Did we get a CLW wand?)

Co-DM Cayzle - Within the Crying Woods
Monday May 9th, 2011 3:50:34 PM

[OOC: A wand of Mage Armor can be used to "cast" the spell on anyone. If you want a wand of Mage Armor and of Cure Light Wounds, that is certainly something that Katarina could have provided. Because I am such a nice and sweet DM, you can even have one of each, bought through Katarina, if you like. You cannot use a metamagic feat with a wand, however.]

Careful consideration of the tracks reveal that whatever made them were not natural or undead, although the prints look somehow skeletal. There is no living smell associated with them, Ollie and Raul report. Zeph (and his natural 20) notes that one footprint shows signs that the foot that made it was scored or maybe marked by a blade. Jet wonders if they are "stick type creatures."

The heroes carefully divest themselves of metal and wood objects, relying on the odd remaining items they happen to have had, or to have improvised. Call it 1d3 slings and 5d6 stones, just by DMly fiat. Alexi put some small items into the non-dimensional space of a haversack. Alexi feels the same response (see below) from the forest whether he has items in the haversack or no, so he may deduce that the forest cannot detect such items hidden off-plane.

Zeph takes the lead, keeping alert and sneaky.

Jet follows, with Raul and Ollie, Alexi, Keela, and Lehn.

Garret guards the rear.

The group enters the Crying Woods. At first, it is like any forest. With time, however, the deeper you get, the more dense the air becomes, the more tangled the underbrush, the thicker the rots and vines. It slows you down, but the alternative is to trip and fall.

What's more, there is a feeling that you are being observed. The sense comes from all around you. It is not exactly hostile, but it is certainly not welcoming. Something is alert to your presence, and is ready in case of any misstep.

It quickly becomes clear that you are moving more slowly than you would like, and that at your present rate of movement, you will not get to the pond by noon. Will you arrive late? Or will you do something to accelerate your movement -- if so, what? Break out the machetes?

OOC: well, if belts and buckles don't bother the woods, ie. the buckles on the haversack, then Keela probably can wear her corset.

Things to remember to get from Katarina: bone bow and bone arrows, bone daggers, net, ... sigh

IC: Alexi enters carrying his haversack. a pouch holds several stones and he holds the sling in his right hand.

"Although these dense woods make slings rather useless, I feel better having something," Alexi commnets.

When the way gets rough, Alexi simply says, "Better late than never. Let's keep plugging on as we were".

"You are the only one that can talk to them Keela, but I don't recommend you leaving the group."

Jet doesn't let the walk bother him, but he does worry about his comrades though and does want them to push it a bit, even if hindered.

Perhaps, he can bring the Crying Wood a little happiness for itself with some entertainment as well as inspiring the others to make better checks if they are needed.

He will sing and dance the best he can, calling on the spirit of Eberyon and Flower to bless the group with an easier journey.

Inspire Courage.

"I hate this, you know."

"I am aware."

"No, no, I really hate this. Not like when I say "I hate strawberries," or "I hate troubadours," I mean that I loathe this on a deep and abiding level."

"The trees?"

"Blood and shale! Yes, the trees. They appear to be silently judging us."

"That's because your usual view of them is just their roots."

"Yes! Good, honest roots. There's nothing duplicitous about roots."

"Well, it seems that slowing us down is the worst that they are doing right now."

"Isn't that guy a druid? Can't he do something about this?"

"Like what?"

"I don't know. Flirt with the trees? Whisper sweet nothings to them?"

"I'll ask."

"Not to complain so easily, friends, but is there anything that can be done to speed our journey? It appears that we may have a friend of the Green with us? I will try what I can to speed us along."

Survival check 33 to increase our speed through the forest.

The one thing that Zeph was never good at, forest navigation.

Just as he thinks the bushes will eat him, Raul and Ollie show up and Zeph decides to be his forestry assistant (Assist survival = 13, or like 15 with Jet's song. So +2 to Raul)

Zeph says loudly to the forest, "You know, the great Culverwood is a good friend of ours. The elves I hail from saved the lands from being burnt to ash by Duergar and Drow many mellinia ago. In the same manner, my friends and I fought to drive out hobgoblins with their steel and seige equipment. It was a whole big mess." (Bluff = 30, or like 32 with Jet's song)

Garret watches carefully from the rear, already nervous about being attacked. As the woods seem to close in around him, he tries to think, "But we were invited. We're here because that fellow has asked us to tea."

When Jet starts his song, Garret can just hear it whispering through the leaves. He hopes that it will do them some good as another leaf slaps Garret in the face.

Co-DM Cayzle - At the Hermit's Pond

The party looks like it will be late to the tea party.

Alexi suggests just slogging on.

Keela suggests someone flying ahead to make an apology for being tardy.

Jet tries to dissuade her. He tries to lighten the party load -- or maybe the forest's grim demeanor -- with a bit of music.

Raul and Ollie slog on too, wondering what Lehn thinks of all this. The Lost Child tries to find a faster way through the tangle.

[OOC: I am sorry that Lehn has fallen behind in his posting. I encourage you all to let him know he is missed. In a nice way, of course.]

Helpful Zeph tries to aid Raul in scouting out a faster path. He tries to aid in Jet's diplomacy.

Garret hopes that Jet's song will help.

Alas, the forest seems immune to logic, emotion, and music. On the other hand, no new problems emerge. You definitely feel that the Woods is both aware and angry. Roots tangle your feet. Branches reach down to smack you. But there are no lethal dangers, on this trip, at least.

And at last, about an hour and a half late, You arrive at the clearing with the small pond. You see the bramble felines near the waterfall. And the feeling of being watched intensifies. There is a small beach here near where you are peering out from the Woods.

Zeph takes his newly gifted Want of Mage Armor and taps it on Alexi, Where metal armor fail, may magic. Anyone else?" (So I'll assume 1st caster level. 1hour duration on the wand. We'll start it at 48 charges)

But then, the tangles get his feet! He thinks a bit angrily, I could just Scorching Ray my way through here...

When the group arrives to the place with the bramble felines and small beach, Zeph says, "Beautiful location for a fortress of solitude eh?"

Then Zeph looks around for traps (Perception to Detect Traps = 33, or 32 for non-trap stuff)

"The wood is testing us. Seing where our breaking point is. Trying our patience. Are we going to pull out the axes? Are we going to let loose the fireballs? Nay, Woods! We'll not fall for it." Alexi blurts as the roots and vines actively seek to impede their way.

Glad to have reached the clearing, Alexi mutters, "Dang! Forgot my swimwear and beach towl."

Jet doesn't take a mage armor spell. He will wait to see if their host is amicable about their tardiness before he begins to assume the meeting is called off....or worse.

He continues to sing and dance a bit, since he has the words to the song now stuck in his head.
