Also we will have a new coDM joining us. His name is John Calhoun and he and I have been friends and gamed together for years. We have far better communication than I did with Dai. ( mostly because we know each other in person rather than just through the Wold)

OOC: hi everyone. I'm reading some back posts so I get some Idea of what's transpired beforehand.
Of course I know about the bad guys you were facing, some DM to be named later bounced Ideas off me about them.

OOC- Welcome aboard John!

OOC2:
So I've included a link to the tower I made. I tried to keep it pretty simple, since we weren't flipping the bill. I will include descriptions later... you guys can always submit descriptions for your areas if you want. Lastly, I can make changes if you deem it necessary.

Description:
The tower is four stories (plus a dungeon), which would make it probably about 50 feet high (I assumed that the ceiling heights would be over 10 feet). I actually didn't include windows for two reasons: 1) security and 2) cause my program didn't have windows. However, if you want a window, we can always add it to the description.

Level 1
1- Main entrance- room used for meeting with guests
2- Dining Hall- large for entertaining guests
3- Kitchen and food supply storage
4- Simple bedrooms- for house staff and guests
S- There are two stairs on the first floor. The circular stairs is behind a locked door (for security). It goes both up and down. The straight stairs leads down only (into supply room).

Level 2:
-There are four large rooms on this floor (15' X 20'). One would likely be a nicer guest quarters, and the other three would be bedrooms for us (one each).
-There is also a shared water basin on the floor

Level 3:
-This is pretty much the same as level 2. Four large (15'X20') bedrooms and a water basin.

Level 4:
13- Private quarters. This room is very well decorated and is used for private meetings, relaxing, etc. I fitted the room with comfortable chairs, rugs, bookshelves and two large tables (potential workspaces). There is also a door on each wall, which leads to a wrap-around balcony so we can look out on the world.

Dungeon level:
This area is actually divided into two sections.
B1- Storage room that is accessible by the straight stairs only.

The other areas are accessible by our stairs only:
B2- Experiment room- simple room with fortified walls for those risky experiments. I put a Calderon in the room for Tishe to work.
B3- Shared lab- filled with bookshevles, desks and tools. For quiet study, experimentation, etc.
B4- Vault

Note: I thought about putting in some cells, but then I thought we probably wouldn't want to keep prisoners here anyway. As such, I pictured a small cell outside of the tower (but on our grounds), as well as a stable.

Tishe' sets an offer out to the village and hires runners to go to the nearby towns for a Chatelain for the new Cinnamon Protectors. The Chatelain will control the domestic concerns of the Protector Tower and must work with the nearby village and the heroes themselves. Experience in domestic management a must.

(OOC - Welcome aboard John!!!)
(OOC2 - Jeff For the tower, can we have one room be a temple for YHWH? If it's going to be Thar's home, he needs somewhere to do all that priestly stuff, like leading worship. doing sacraments, etc.)

OOC3 - ALL PC's => For the treasure, how do we want to divvy up items, etc?

One option is that we total the value of all the items, divvy the gp value up for each person (assuming the 10% discount at the Catacombs), and then let people start choosing items that they may actually want. If they do, then we deduct that value (90% of it, since they don't have to sell it and lost 10%) from their individual allotment.

For example only=> if we have 100K worth of items and 5 PC's, it comes to 20K per person *0.9% = 18K per person if we assume everything is sold. Say Thar likes an actual item that is worth 10K, then he'd have only 9K (10K * 90% at Cats) deducted from his share, and have 18K left (19K - 9K).

We did this in two of the game's I've played in and it seemed to work well. For who gets what item, we merely put in requests, and if there were two people who wanted it, we either had them work it out or did a d100 roll where the highest roll got it...

Any other options on how we could split the funds?

Thar continues meeting with members of the city, helping heal any of the injured, and working closely with Morgantha. He tries to build a good relationship with her, finding out what she likes, sending her a gift to honor her and let her know his apprecation.

He awaits a cleric from his home church who can begin building a local temple...

Edmund (HP: 95/95, AC: 17, CMD: 20, Sp.Resist: 18)

Edmund vouches for Thar's capabilities as a treasurer, remembering his service in that regard for the Mithril Order. He also fiddles with the boots of teleportation--it is clear that he likes them, but probably considers them too valuable to ask for.

Edmund also gets to know the people in the surrounding village. They also get to know him. Edmund is likeable, though he is not exactly taciturn.

"Decent people, these?" he asks Thar, when they are alone. "Worth staying to help, what? If so, I don't mind offering my assistance."

"They could certainly use a church here, methinks..." he adds.

OOC:
I've assumed the tower was a defensive fortification, hence I've made the upper floors private... only trusted guests, servants and us would really get in there. The first floor is for meeting/greeting the vast majority of regular guests that come to see us.

With this in mind, what if we made Thar a temple on the grounds of the tower? That way local villagers could come to see his services and to pray when they see fit. We could also have a small guard house/prison on the grounds, as well as a stable. Does that work for everyone?

DM David
That would be the best way to handle it I think. The Pitchfork council is pretty adamant on the protection only part. True it will serve as your quarters, but they are not planning to foot the bill for your, religions, hobbies or craft space other than a common room like Snafu put in, one that can be both a meeting room and a workspace for all of you. They will however have the dwarves construct a jail for you in the town proper if you like. One large cell (drunk tank and general holding) and 2 or 3 small cells for 'special' guests.

"I would be happy to take you to Plateau City" Snafu said. "I know the place well, and I could have you there with a few magical words. Just let me know when you'd like to go."

Snafu also agreed with Thar's plan on dividing up the items. "Perhaps we should keep the scrolls and wands of healing. They are always useful things to have. I might take a few of those for instances when I'm needed to invoke healing in a pinch" (OOC- Use Magic Device).

"Otherwise, I have some interest in the two rings, but I think I'd rather use the cash to buy myself materials to construct a rod that I've always wanted."

Welcome, Asst. DM John!

With regard to the tower, Edmund will want to be as near the top as is possible. He'll also do everything in his power to get both a desk and a bath into his room--but the rooms are pretty small, by the look of it. --More like monastic cells than suites.

The map suits me fine, though. Nice work. (Honestly going to miss the palatial dwellings we had in Plateau City, though.)

Also, if it wasn't clear from my post, Edmund doesn't need those boots. He can cast Teleport at will.

Thar dons the hat of the diplomat and goes to meet Morgantha. She lives in a small stone and thach hut in the middle of what will become the town. She has a split rail fence surrounding her house and a pen in back filled with livestock, mostly goats and a few chickens. Her yard however is decorated with tall posts with crosspieces at the top. From these arms hang all manner of sum catchers. Different colors of glass hang all about leading to a kalidescope of colors in the yard depending on the position of the sun. If asked she says it reminds her of the ebb and flow of magic and how the Woldsblood shifts the landlines of the valley constantly.
He appearance after you sighting of Skalipy's true face is rather unsettling, but once you become accustomed to her you find she is pleasant and practical, good with numbers and planning and capable of a great deal of silver tongued debate to get what she wants...when she is getting what she wants. Thar does witness that she can have a bit of a temper though when things do not go her way. While entertaining her guest she completely forgets the bread she has in her oven. When it burns she swears a streak of curses that makes Thar blush and then, in an instant returns to her pleasant self to continue their conversation.
Snafu tells Reginald that he can transport them to Plateau City whenever the connesouir is ready. The next day Reginald is prepared and asks that Thar and Snafu accompany him to be recognized as petitioners to the Connoisseurs of Combat. Snafu gathers then all, Thar Reginald and Jenny and teleports to a place he knows well in Plateau City. They are entered into the rolls and told that someone will contact them for their initiation fight. It will be unannounced and it will happen immediately as soon as the standing member contacts them. They will each then fight in single combat until the other party or they yield. They are to beat the opponent through force of arms. Spells are permitted, but should not be the entire fight ( IE no magic missileing down their opponent, but a shocking grasp through a blade strike or barehanded touch is completely accepted) The applicants are to make their mark and then put their thumbprint in blood on the contract. They are assured this is to later identify them when their tester comes calling.
Reginald then thanks them personally for his and his daughters rescue by presenting them with a token in the shape of his house signet, a falcon in flight. He explains that if they present this when they are in or near Plateau City they will be assisted to the best of his ability with whatever they ask, if he is able to grant it.
On the return trip a strange thing happens. Thar and Snafu disappear from Plateau City as expected, but during the trip there is a thunderclap and an explosion. Both of them fall 15 feet into a bog that neither of you have seen before. Thar comes up for air and finds himself alone. searching about allows him to fins and unconscious Liontaur in the water. Strangely the Liontaur is dressed as Snafu was when they left Plateau City. Through a quick burst of healing the Liontaur is healed and awoken....

"Oh my aching..." Snafu muttered as he gained conciousness, but his words trailed off as he attempted to localize where he was feeling pain. He was fairly sure the pain was in one of his limbs, but he couldn't tell which one on account of the fact that he seemed to have a couple extra.

"Oh my aching... paw?" he said with surprise as he opened his eyes and began examining himself. "Oh, where did this come from? And, what has been done with Snafu? Hold on one second... I am Snafu. I seem to be right here, but the elf part seems to be long gone."

Just then Snafu seemed to realize something- "Oh I see, just a simple dream... only a dream. I will pinch myself, wake up, and half-elf Snafu will be back. Okay, here we go... ouch! That should do it... no... no... no... still a lion. Need to try harder."

With that, Snafu took his two new paws and slapped himself hard across the face twice (7 nonlethal damage), and then re-examined himself. To his surprise, he was still a Liontaur.

"Wait one second. It appears I am awake, and that I have been turned into a Lion" Snafu determined. And then with a chuckle he added- "A good prank to have turned my into a Liontaur, Thar. All this while I thought you a dreadfully serious fellow... painfully so... but now I learn the truth of your troublemaking comedic ways... haha! Touche!"

Snafu laughed aloud for a few seconds and then put an arm on Thar's shoulder. "Okay, you got me, but now could you turn me back, for though I have no doubt that I would enjoy being part lion, I feel I will one day miss Snafu the half elf."

1. After his meeting with Morgantha, Thar takes time to reflect upon this leader of this community. He's glad he's on her good side, and feels bad for any who get on her wrong side. After they meet, he thanks her for her time and hospitality, and invites her to come to the tower for a meal sometime so that he can show the same hospitality.

2. When thinking about the design of the temple, he agrees that having one on the grounds would make great sense in order to meet the people's spiritual needs.

3. At Plateau City, he agrees to a future unannounced duel in order to show his suitability to join the Connoisseurs. After pricking his hand, he signs his name where needed...

4. Popping out of the water, he shakes his head to clear the gunk and grime out. "What in the world?" he asks, but realizes that someone next to him has replaced Snafu... The Liontaur looks like Snafu, but he's not sure what has happened...

Secondly, in the short time they have been together, Tyris has proven a great friend in companion having to do nothing more thank think, and have him understand. It is quite obvious he is far more than just an animal, but a creature of magic.

Plans are made to have John laid to rest at Wolf Hill.

Wednesday June 8th, 2011 7:53:04 PM

Thar looks at the Snafu looking liontaur, and claims nothing to do with what just happened.

Snafu recalls hearing about teleporting not being 100% safe, and that occasionally catastrophic mishaps do occur. It then also occurs to Snafu that he's never seen this section of swamp land before in his life. Also that just after casting the spell, but before arriving at his chosen destination, he recalls a bright flash of light and an explosion that appearently knocked him out, none of which are normal, when he casts his teleportation.

Tishe's messangers have all been sent out, and she's awaiting responces.

Falmar's pen gets built rather rapidly, but sturdily, particularly sence the Bounder tends to enjoy eating most anything that doesn't move away from it, or isn't bigger than it'self.

Edmund has a disquieting conversation with some of the Dwarven craftsmen about the need to have a bathtub in his personal room, all the time trying to stand up wind of the craftsmen talking with him. In the end, they say they'll get something figured out for him.

Kahlan having talked to some of the workmen, manages to locate a Priest of Domi who would be willing to consecrate the ground and hold the servce for the funeral, making it a proper funeral and plans on the service being in a couple days. The service is to be held at dawn, with the proper ceremonies to be held afterwards in honor of the fallen Paladin. (ceremonies being some sort of Contest of Strength and skill)

All players, over the couple days that have passed, heal up to thier full hit points.

After Snafu realized that his own spell had caused his transformation he turned to Thar and asked:

"Do I look fat?"

He then did a slow 360-degree turn, pausing for just a moment to show his backside. "Does it look big" he asked again.

But Snafu didn't wait for an answer. Instead, he dug his claws into a nearby tree, quickly pounced back and then swung at the air with his short sword.

"Got to admit, it feels pretty good" he said as he continued his shadow fighting before he added- "...even if I do look fat".

For the next few minutes Snafu experimented with his new form and his mood improved rapidly, almost to the point that he seemed delighted. However, eventually his attention switched back to their situational dilemma.

"Hmmmm..." Snafu said. "I have absolutely no idea where we are. Should I try teleporting us again? I promise to try not to turn you into a Liontaur?"

If Thar agreed, Snafu would try the teleport again.

OOC- to Thar Snafu can't cast any healing spells, but he can use wands and scrolls fairly well. I have a cure light wounds wand, but that won't do much for us as combat healing. Perhaps if I held the scrolls just in case we ever needed them in combat, and you take the wands since you are a much better healer. Sound okay?

Tishe' is busy making her assigned room into a home, but she has plenty of time for the more important things.

The witch makes certain she is early for John's memorial service. Sad for any noble life cut short, she is most concerned with ensuring Kahlan has everything that she would need.

She invites Morgantha to lunch at the Protector's Tower, and informs her packmates that they should all come to make a good impression. She is happy that Thar has done the footwork, but the others should be known as well.

At lunch, she makes more conversation with Edmund to get them both more used to each other. When Thar and a strange liontaur arrive, it takes some convincing to accept that this is ... "Snafu? I think we need a different room for you."

Back home, Thar busies himself collecting and counting their treasure, gathering it to be sold at the Catacombs, etc. He also attends John's memorial service whenever it occurs.

Kahlan..Depends on what you have in mind. You have some dwarven craftsmen that as undeniably loyal to the group since their freedom was won by the heroes of the Cinnamon Valley. They will not turn down coin, but are more than happy to turn out their best work ( its a pride thing) for a normal fee. They are able to craft is stone and whatever metal you desire them to work with. Let me look into the construction costs in the book and we'll see what it'll take.

IC
The second teleport goes off without a hitch and a very liontaurish Snafu arrives home with Thar in tow. It is a bit of a surprise for the others, but they manage it well. Snafu however has some lifestyle changes to make. He finds that none of his pants fit him any longer and shoes are also out of the question. His sleeping arrangements are somewhat more difficult now since he is larger than his bed. Otherwise, things are pretty good for him. He finds that strangely all of his gear is now large sized. After some coordination issues ( darn those extra paws) and catching his tail in a door a few times, he gets used to his new body.
John's burial is a solemn event. Brother Caius reads some stirring entries from a tome that refers to Domi as Imod. The priest explains that he is a bit of a book nut and he thought that given Kahlan's description of John, that the author of the work was a kindred spirit to him and would make for a good end to John's time in the Wold. Afterward, Brother Caius with Kahlan's help has arranged for all manner of contests and a few small prizes. There are foot races, pie eating contests, Arm wrestling matches and even a ring tossing contest using several different sized rings and a board with pegs on it to throw them at. The town offers their condolences to Kahlan and the heroes get a good chance to meet and connect with their new neighbors.
The next day a familiar face rides up to the tower at mid morning. Almar Blackhand sits astride his horse with the easy grace of a practiced horseman. He dismounts and asks to visit with Tishe. He mentions that he has heard a rumor that some heroes have been made the official Protectors of the Cinnamon Valley and that they in turn have been looking for someone to keep their affairs in order." It just so happens, that my contract with the Fist ends this month and I have taken a liking to these people. I am not so young as I used to be and a warm fire instead of the cold ground is starting to grow in its appeal. I think I am getting soft as I grow older. What I am saying is that I would like to apply for the job. Several of my lads have decided thay want to stick with me, so you would have some hard blackhands to use your terms, at the tower when you was away. I don't mince words and I don't coddle the weak or suffer the foolish, but I think you know all that. Besides, there is a matter of an unbloodied dagger and a certain heart I do not yet possess, and a tale I am sure to be told about it. My boys and I are good at counting and keeping a larder tallied and disciplined enough to not drink you out of house and home. If the offer sounds good I'll be in the Inn in town for a few days."
Several days later, Edmund and most of the rest of the tower are awoken by loud metal on stone banging inside the tower, and some gruff swearing in Dwarvish. The workmen have finished Edmund's tub and are trying to carry it up the stairs to his room. It is fairly large and made of copper. Why they are bringing it in at 6 am in the morning and why there is a strong odor of ale on their breaths is something that bears further investigation.

Despite the hour and the reek of ale, Edmund is delighted at the arrival of his bath. He turns out of bed with a haste rarely seen, and provides quite a lot of 'helpful advice' with regard to bath placement and replacement.

On hearing of Almar, Edmund looks relieved that someone has been found to handle the day-to-day affairs of the group. 'Less work for me, more time for baths!' he declares.

Edmund spends most of the rest of the day in testing his new bath.

DM David -- What's in a Name--

DM note
I should have described Almar again, I forgot we have new people.

He is a Hobgoblin with orange skin, a large blue nose and an odd blackened right hand. The hand appears to have once been severed and sewn back on. Rough stitching can be seen where it joins the forearm and the whole thing looks slightly rotten. Almar is quick to prove to any that sneer at it though that it is perfectly functional. The hand was 'degloved' in an action where Almar's group was forced to hold a tunnel against a vastly superior force. At the end of the action the tunnel was collapsed on the enemy, and a stray beam landed on Almar's hand. Thinking fast the Hobgoblin quickly pulled his hand back, the force of his withdrawal aggravating the crushed hand's damage and pulling the skin cleanly off of his hand and lower arm. Almar is said to have blinked a few times at his maimed hand, turned to his Fist and ordered them to raise the beam and grabbed the skin stuck beneath it. His surgeon then sewed the glove back in place and the unit priest healed it, but was unable to actually regenerate the damage. The hand works fine, but has never recovered it's former appearance.
Almar wears black half plate over bright yellow underarmor and clothes. The effect is very shocking and makes him stand out in a crowd.

"Snafu the Liontaur!" Snafu said proudly as he looked at himself in the mirror in his room. After studying himself for a few more moments he added in a deep but slightly forced voice- "Greetings, Snafu Ravenshoe at your service." And he bowed to himself and then smiled with pride.

Hoot didn't look the least bit impressed.

"What's wrong with you Hoot" Snafu added. "Never seen a Liontaur before? Or just never seen one this good looking?"

Hoot blinked twice and turned to face the other corner of the room.

"Oh Hoot... you're such an owld lady!"

...

For the next few days Snafu spent most of his time pouncing around the castle, testing the strengths and limitations of his new form. "Snafu the Liontaur!" he would often say, always in a slightly different tone of voice. "Snafu the Liontaur!"

"Don't know how or why it happened, but I kind of like the way it feels" he told his companions. "Tail gets in the way sometimes, but the extra paws sure come in handy. I think I may keep them for a while."

His self-absorbed attitude remained until Almar showed up, which served as a reminder for all that had happened since they had mysertiously appeared in the Valley. "I think we should definately hire him and his band" Snafu explained. "This tower and town needs some guards besides us. Otherwise we'll have to spend every waking hour here... plus, with Skalipy still on the loose..."

Snafu let his words hang, for extra effect.

2. Please make sure you look at the proposed dispositions, and let me know if they match up.

3. We talked about keeping the scrolls and wands for healing... I think the scrolls make sense, but do we really need both wands? I'd be OK getting rid of one of them, since Thar plans on using most of his spells to heal various party members. He also has some blanket healing cleric abilities... By keeping both wands, we're going a bit overboard and that money we have tied up in them could be used for other things... Just a thought...

4. It appears that Snafu and Kahlan both want the same item, so who wants it more?

5. Once we decide upon dispositions, etc., I'll post the final amounts...

Edmund has ascertained that his bath works, and emerges looking much like his old self. His hair is tied back with a blue ribbon and hangs down his back. A few stray wisps of straw-coloured hair accent the top of his forehead, from below which, his injuries now recovered, twinkling, dark green eyes gaze out.

His robe is white and, thanks to being cleaned, looks so. He usually wears it open and over his other clothes, which gives him something of the look of a scholar or librarian.

When he learns of the new liontaur Snafu, Edmund raises his eyebrows.

"How extremely curious. Perhaps his God saw fit to fulfill his wish?"

My men and I would simply be your servants, guards, book keepers whatever you decide for us.Mouse is a rather decent cook since yon half-elf keeps asking about his dinner. Renny comes from a minor noble house where he was taught his numbers and he normally keeps our provisions squared away and our ready cash cataloged so he can serve as your chamberlain. Lars and I would be your men at arms."

Saturday June 11th, 2011 12:39:06 AM

OOC re. the naming: tutaminis (it's one word) is actually the genitive singular, so it means "of defence". For a name, you'd probably want it singular in the nominative case (the case used for subjects): tutamen.

That said, I am not generally in favour of anything Latin-derived. Apart from having to study way too much of it as part of my work, I like to try to avoid it in the Wold, where (presumably) they'd have no access to Latin.

Glory River sounds okay (if a bit self-aggrandising).

A few understated suggestions:
The Golden Shore (re. the golden fields that abut the river; and jives nicely with the overall area of "The Cinnamon Hills")
Morgantha's Watch (a tip of the hat to the village's headmistress)
Tower Hill (Straight-forward enough)
The Gathering Farms (A little more subtle, and a nice wordplay too)
Liontaur's Delight (And a cute little story tie-in to round things out).

Edmund would prefer to name it Greenleaf Village, if he had his way. Then he could be Lord of a village in addition to the other various titular appellations he has already acquired.

Tishe' (AC:27 CMD:19 HP 107/107)
Saturday June 11th, 2011 9:10:11 AM

Tishe' considers and shakes her head over nearly every suggestion for a name. "We should have neither a name of glory, hero, nor gold or any of the like. For one, neither is why we are here, nor do we want the people of Cinnamon Valley to think that is the reason, further, we do not want the name to attract enemies seeking to bring us low because they think that is what we have or that if we fall, the rest of the Valley will be easy pickings. That is not the case and could only bring danger upon those who seek our protection."

The Witch continues, hoping her words convey wisdom to the others. "Likewise, the name should be apart from things that could change, so I dislike 'Liontaur' or 'Morgantha' or similar in the name. Still you are right, the name should reflect something of us, so 'dog', dove', and 'tutawhat' does not seem the best."

Falmar watches as others take their oath before Tishe's pot. He looks thoughtful for a while and when eyes turn toward him he holds his hands forth, turning them from palm-up to palm-down, flexes his fingers into tight fists and releases them.

My hands, they are as black as any here. Words will not change who I am, I have too many unfulfilled oaths that weigh heavily upon my soul. Henceforth they must be discharged. My pack is the night soil, I wouldn't have it any other way. It is not in the utterance of a pledge, but the pick itself that separates the Bright from the Dark.

With that he turns and walks off to Dondit and spends the rest of the day wandering in an ever increasing spiral around WatcHaven watching and learning.

The name of WatcHaven is settled upon. The villagers go on about their lives without much change other than a way to tell others where they are and point to it on a map.
Tishe renews her oath with all of her companions present. Some take up her blade and swear the oath with her, some refuse for their own reasons.
Edmund fantasizes about ruling these people he has only just met, thinking he can rule them and protect them in a way that all those who have come before him did not.
Snafu agrees Kahlan should have a share of the spoils taken in Skalipy's lair.
Thar makes his rounds among the people in town. They have come to accept him and like him more than a little. Some evenings he comes home to find a small basket on his bed. Inside is usually something baked. Cookies, muffins and occasionally a loaf of a crusty but fragrant bread that tastes like heaven. Apparently his learning the local ways and meeting the people have netted Thar an admirer. (Thar take a skill point in knowledge local).
Falmar is on patrol a fair amount of the time. He sees no threats to the community and he too learns some of their customs and ways, by observing rather than participating in them.
A week passes and Almar returns to take over stewardship of the tower. Mouse takes over the kitchen and cooking duties, and the meals improves substantially. Renny takes over the book keeping for the tower, ordering the accounts and setting up reliable supply contracts with the surrounding countryside. Lars takes control of the security of the tower. Almar oversees all of this and pitches in when needed. All of these men are constantly armed and always wear at least light armor, old habits die hard.

" Remember, if your opponent can wait for you to miss aa step, then they likely have something that will make the wait worth it." The hobgoblin says to Snafu. " The lady has the right of it though, you move very well considering that 2 weeks ago you stood on only 2 legs and had no natural weapons of your own. Almost like you had been born this way." When Snafu mentions Gnomish Cheese Mouse nearly vomits in the potatoes he had been peeling as he watched. " Gnomish Cheese! Ugh, have you ever SMELLED Gnomish Cheese? It is like taking a skunk and wrapping it in soiled burning underwear and then waiting for the corpse to ripen in the sun. Horrible stuff. Only ever met one guy what could eat it, but he had had his nose cut off in...." The story continues, like so many of Mouse's stories do.
Some of the other Protectors begin to get to know the townsfolk, but none other than Thar recieve gifts in their room, behind a locked door, on the second floor.....

Thursday June 16th, 2011 11:32:15 PM

As the days pass Falmar spends his time in contemplation of the theories behind Teleportation, and ways to prevent it. He contemplates visiting the Star-Mages guild for some research realizing that if we can visit our foes, what prevents our foes from visiting us in the same way. He realizes that they need to defend their home with more than just steel. The domes were impressive, but Oddholme still fell..but we need something stronger, something unseen that keeps the beaters away...

Steel and Magic, apart they are strong, together....why do I have these doubts....

Falmar also visits Mouse and seeks to arrange some type of kitchen waste disposal that Dondit could help with..

" You see, he will eat anything, there is already a shortage of rats in WatcHaven so anything you need to discard would be appreciated, but myself and the goodwives of the village."

Edmund spends a lot of time in baths and in loitering around outside Thar's locked room.

One day, he hunts down Falmar, and launches into a lengthy speech.

"So, what is to be done about Skippy," Edmund enquires. "Certainly, we should be making efforts to determine his whereabouts, scry upon him, gather intelligence, learn if anyone else has had a similar problem, and so on. Much as I like the baths--quite nice, my bath, too, I'll have you know. Quality dwarven craftwork. Very fine. Where was I? Oh, right--much as I like the baths, would it not behoove us, and the people of Watchund-- er, --haven to hunt him down and put a stop to his wickedness sooner rather than later?"

"Also," the prolix half-elf continues with hardly a breath taken, "What is your opinion on mutton? I think we should have more of it, don't you?"

Almar's dagger is reminding her that thier task is incomplete.

After a very long nap, Thar comes out and visits with the rest of the group. When asked about the source of treats, he smiles and says to Edmund, "Yes, it seems like I've got someone who admires me... I'm not sure who the lass could be but that sounds like a mystery I'd enjoy solving." He offers to share his basket of baked goods with the rest of his party. He puts the basket in their common eating area, after taking out his favorites of course...

He goes out into the town and ask he visits, asks surreptitiously about who might have brought him the delicious treats. A smile here and there, a healing where needed, a nice tip at the local tavern should help him gather the clues...

Once he's done eating and investigating, he joins with Snafu and Kahlan in sparring. His specialty is using his bow with deadly accuracy, and he does his best to learn to defend himself while poking holes in his foes...

(OK everyone, if you haven't gone yet, time to head to the Catacombs and we'll try to serve you as best as we can ;-) )

"EE-GATTS!" Snafu called aloud as Almar's blade stopped short of what clearly would have been a killing blow. "Certainly I am greatful to have you on our side, Almar."

...

Snafu continued to train with anyone that was willing, and tried to learn all that he could in the process. He absorbed what he could from Kahlan regarding the harmonious use of two blades, the art of feinting and patience from Almar, and deadly use of ranged weapons from Thar.

At the end of each day Snafu was exhausted, but he still made the long walk to the roof of the tower, where he would inspect what would soon serve as a training platform, and perhaps enjoy his dinner with his owl Hoot.

"Watchaven..." he said calmly as he watched the sun go down. And you Hoot... your it's prince Snafu thought. "Prince Hoot, I must build you a perch up here, so you can be the eyes of Watchaven... what do you think?"

Blink... blink...

Snafu took that has a yes.

Snafu agrees with Kahlan's idea to become another Connesiuer of Combat and teleports with her to plateau City to file the paperwork. It is a small matter for them to find Reginald and have him Sponsor her as well. They then return to the Tower. Nothing bad happens during these teleports.
Almar is more than happy to become a sparring partner for anyone who wishes to test their mettle. He is most intrigued to hear about this dandy they rescued and his fighting style." A rapier? Really? Against armored foes? He must own the patience of an elf to be able to fight like that, but if he is as good as you say, and he is not even a high ranking member of this group, you should all count yourselves lucky to learn from them."
No one yet has seen how Thar's admirer is delivering these baskets, and this has Almar and Lars again wondering why they cannot find someone that is right under their noses. (If anyone looks at the locks to the private quarters or makes any concerted effort to try and find this person, let me know)
Falmar's small patch of the Plains grows and the place where Tishe planted the soil from the oath grows lush and strong. The grasses there are supple and tough at the same time, bending easily while being tough to mat down or cut.
Tishe's scrying meets with no sucess. Skalipy has apparently become far more protective of his whereabouts since running with his tail between his legs. Yet she cannot help but feel they have not seen the last of the diseased Dwarf.

She does take an explore down the well to check out the underground stream area and ensure the Aboleth have not returned. The exploration makes her remember the slippery little halfling, Harlan. While Skalipy may be hemmed in by too many defensive spells, the halfling sorcerer may not.

Tishe' tries to locate Harlan by Scry

He spends even more time loitering in front of Thar's room or within earshot. When no one is around, he uses True Seeing and Detect Magic to learn if some magic may be at work in the suspected delivery.

Edmund also begins to ask the guards and villagers about the matter, doing his best to be as subtle as possible with regard to his suspicions, and to make it appear as though the information is vital (Bluff 43, Intimidate 28).

Thar joins Edmund in trying to identify this secret admirer... It's been a while since his fiancee Ruby left with little warning and he's only now ready to open his heart again...

On the other hand, he's a bit discomforted by the fact that their defenses and security are so easily breached. An admirer is one thing, but someone who can get in and out with no detection could expose a huge hole in their security... He's a bit more persistent this time with his attempts to find out who it could be, by speaking with locals, parishioners, etc.

Meanwhile, he continues pondering how to craft a certain item and wonders which way to go...

John may be a bit premature in his announcement. We have 1 more player joining us and there are still issues with the module. But it will start soon.
IC
Lars, who has seemingly has alot of knowledge of these things, examines the lock. He announces that it has not been tampered with mechanically. Both Lars and Almar step up their patrols inside the tower. Since no harm has been done they say they will only detain the admirer if they find her. The baskets continue to be found, in Thar's room, on the bed. None of the questioning, no matter how well meaning turns up anything in town, in the parishioners or with Morgantha, although the witch seems mightily amused that someone is putting the heroes through all these troubles.

Tishe is thwarted at finding Skalipy and Mortimer, but Harlan is in no way expecting to be scryed. She finds him in the middle of the day sitting in a tavern buying drinks and eating lunch. Since he is a halfling and was rather stout and apparently fond of food the lunch is not modest. The taproom seems to be sparsely populated. There are 2 other people at the table with Harlan. One is apparently his bodyguard. The other is some pretty young thing that the halfling is apparently stringing along.

Kahlan has grown close to her new companion, Tyris. She feels as if he is a part of her, and if the mount was that close to John, then she is that much closer to him as well. The hillside where John was laid to rest is a calm oasis in the tower's world of secret admirers and constant vigilance. Tyris often goes there when given his head and just stands next to the site, overlooking the tower below, as if John stands beside him still.

Edmund's magical detections find nothing at all magical going on outside Thar's room in the tower. His interrogations of the villagers net him no information and actually antagonizes some of the villagers.

He limbers himself in preparation of this days drills, but as he begins to swing upon his wooden foe his Scimitar is seen to discharge Lightning, Fire, and the post, leaving a charred stub, and a thoroughly charred hilltop...

Falmar nods and kicks over the stump..sheathing his weapon, then returning to WatcHaven. If anyone was watching him, he will speak to them about the wisdom of the Grasses, and Life on the Planes.

TIshe' calls for Blackhand and asks him to round up as many of the Protectors as he can on short notice. "I have found an errant thread in our tapestry, and aim to pull it", she says with a feral grin.

When the others arrive, Tishe' lays out the situation, that Harlan the Halfling is a sorcerer who can Silent/Still cast at least Dim Door and escape quickly. He is also got a magnetic personality, making even the heroes doubt themselves. And last but not least? He was a link in the kidnapping/slave chain in selling people to at least two different groups that the Cinnamon Protectors know about; Aboleth's and Sharon the dead werewolf.

Laying out her plan, she asks to borrow Falmar's teleportation boots, and bring in Snafu, Falmar, and Kahlan. Snafu silences the area and Falmar and Kahlan grapple the little monster.

Edmund, convinced that something is up in the Tower (which he has ingeniously named The Tower of Greenleaf without consulting anyone), finally decides to tell Thar of his suspicions.

"Now then," he says in an officious tone, "I suspect you've been receiving baked goods in secret, have you not? There is no need to confirm it; I know the smell of a chocolate biscuit. And to hold out on the rest of us, too! Bad form, bad form--but that's not what I need to talk to you about."

The sorcerer takes a breath before continuing. "Has it occurred to you that someone is managing to get through our well-crafted defenses? Defenses involving me, no less! It is not only a matter of curiousity, it is intolerable and worrying. If some random villager is capable of sneaking hither and thither without fear, it is only a matter of time before someone more talented, more powerful, more dangerous works out how to do the same."

"I suggest that you allow me to hide in your room tomorrow. I can render myself invisible, enter as you leave, and keep an eye on things until you return. That way, we'll discover who is bringing the gifts and--much more importantly--how it is being done."

Having thought of everything, Edmund smiles at Thar broadly. "A little detective work, hey-hey? What say you?"

Thar,
Wednesday June 22nd, 2011 5:33:54 PM

Thar searches and searches, but can't find any news of this admirer. However, one day when he returns home, despondent about his poor luck, he finds a letter attached to his latest gift. He checks to see if it's magical (Detect Magic), and if not, opens it and reads... His expression changes quickly and he gets a grim look on his face. "Edmund, come here!" he yells to his stalwart friend. "You've got to read this..." He shares with him the contents of the letter and says, "I've got to meet some people tomorrow alone, and I'm asking you to keep this between us. I don't want this to get out in public, but I don't want to go without anyone knowing where or what I'm doing... If I don't return, tell Tishe', as she's our leader and let her know what's happening..."

Before he goes to the meadow, he tries to remember what he's seen of the geography and layout of the area. He wants to get there undetected and see whomever could be waiting for him. When he goes, he buffs himself up with some spells, remains stealthy and quiet, getting there several hours before and setting up a 'hide' where he can watch the field undetected.

(Back a day or two...) While searching for the admirer, Thar does find time to go to the local Catacombs and sell all their items while buying a few new ones and bringing the money back to distribute to the rest of the party....

Falmar tests out his new gear, eventually he hears Almar riding up behind him and hears that Tishe is looking for a few people for a mission.

Thar scouts the meeting like a true woodsman ( however he provides no perception or survival rolls so I get to make all this up) As he makes his second curcuit of the meeting place he sees someone huddled at the base of the tree, in the shadows the tree provides. Moving closer he is able to get a good look at the person before deciding to go closer.
She is a girl, or young woman of about 18 years of age. Her complexion is paler than that of many of the other townsfolk, as if she does not go out much in the daytime. Her hair is dark and straight, slightly longer than shoulder length and she is dressed in all dark clothes. She sits huddled under the tree with her knees hugged agianst her chest. So far all of them are dead. Two nights ago, the demon came himself. Little my mother did even touched the thing and my spells were not enough, until I thought about what would hurt a creature of shadow and darkness. I reached inside myself and I pulled out a light as bright as the sun. The thing fled, but last night I could feel it lurking around outside. I dared not sleep. Friday June 24th, 2011 4:10:55 PM

Prior to teleporting after Harlan, Snafu made some preparations. First he cast some prepatory spells. Then he bad Hoot the owl to "clean this place up!"

"Shall we go now?" Snafu asked Tishe, as he pulled his silence scroll from his pack.

Thar,  d20+8=23 ; d20+14=29 ; d20+11=12 ; d20+8=24 ;
Friday June 24th, 2011 7:41:58 PM

(OOC - All PC's, our updated amount per person is 29878.55 gp each, as we had to correct a value of one of our items. Thar just finished his transaction and DM David, let me know when we can pass it out...

Thar laughs at the girls witty riposte and says, "Yes, maybe I have been inside too long. I need to get back into the forest and work on getting back in shape... I've also been eating too many sweets, especially these mysterious ones that have been arriving in my room each day." Pausing a moment, he adds with a smile, "Of course I never expected the cook to be so pretty and lovely."

He listens to the poor girls impassioned story and puts an arm on her shoulder to show his empathy. "I'm so sorry to hear about your ancestor and the heritage she unwittingly passed on. Helena, yes, I will help you against the demon. I have no tolerance for their evil and wickedness, and you have my word of honor as a gentleman that I will protect you to the best of my abilities. Yes, I have some divine spells that will work against the demon and his friends."

"Now, it sounds like you have some spell casting ability of your own? What can you cast so that I know our combined strength? Tell me about this light... was it a normal light or did it have some sort of divine strength in it?" (Know Religion = 12... Know Arcana =23 Spellcraft = 29 Know (Planes - info on the type/strength/weaknesses of demon we'll be facing = 24 ) => trying to figure out what she cast...)

"Also, I think that we should call on the rest of my friends to aid us against the demon, as there is strength in numbers. The two of us are strong, but with 5 more on our side, we will be even stronger. If they're coming tonight, then we need to get moving quickly, as there's no time to waste. How much time do you think we have until they show up?"

DM David -- Whodunnit--
Saturday June 25th, 2011 8:51:23 PM

From Thar's knowledge of spells and the girl's description he decides she must be a sorcerer of some kind, but not of a bloodline he has ever heard of. It sounds like she used a daylight spell to drive the thing off, and from her feeling of safety here in the open in the bright sun that sounds like confirmation. From her description it sounds as if it can throw darkness and shadow related spells and it is harmed by bright light.
Helena accepts Thar's arm around her shoulder, and puts her arms around him. Sitting them both down against the tree she continues on." I cannot live in daylight all the time and Morgantha spoke only your name as solution to my plight. She said you were the spokesperson, the negotiator, the voice that came to see her. If the creature senses so much power set against him he will likly wait until you are gone. It must be silent, it must be small and it must destroy him utterly if I am ever to sleep again outside of your sight. They come at night, once it is fully dark, usually as night changes to day ( midnight)." Her voice gets softer and softer as she goes on. Finally she falls silent and Thar realizes she has fallen asleep in his arms, her head on his shoulder.

DM David -- A familiar Inn...--
Saturday June 25th, 2011 9:10:32 PM

Tishe gathers Snafu and Kahlan to her Summons. Almar Blackhand returns and pledges his blade as well, leaving Lars here for security and Mouse preparing tonight's dinner. The place Tishe saw was the Inn where they first met Sharon, she is sure of it. Since Snafu has been there he could do the teleport to the Inn.
Gathering his friends close the Liontaur casts his spell and they appear outside of the ramshackle building. Upon bursting through the door, spells and weapons ready, they find the common room is a mess. Chairs and tables are overturned. Scorch marks mar the walls and there are what appear to be several bloodstains on the floor. Sitting at a table in the back is a fully armored knight. One side of his breastplate appears heavily damaged, perhaps by a lighting bolt. Otherwise the reddish blond haired man with blue eyes is covered with minor wounds. Scrapes and dents mar his armor where it appears that no less that a half dozen men tried to take him down. At a second glance at the room you put the number closer to eight, lying dead against the walls, in corners and underneath broken furniture. At your entrance the man looks up and notices your entry. He smiles a winning smile and says." See Harlan, someone HAS come for you, though I doubt they are people you wish to see again." To those bursting in the door he stands and says." Greetings Cinnamon Protectors. My name is Ramen Elowyn, Paladin of Pantheon. I received word from the Pitchfork Council that this man was a Slaver and had escaped your justice. Pantheon led me to him, and here he lies, awaiting your pleasure."
Harlan lies on the floor, eyes wide, clothing removed, bound and gagged. The point of an elven curved blade rests between his shoulder blades. Now that you notice that bit of information, you look back up at this Elowyn fellow and realize that not once have his hand left the pommel of the blade. They rest on top of it, presumably waiting for Harlan to make ANY attempt at escape.

Guys, welcome Yves and his new character. Your party is now Woldian full and once the module is approved and a few other loose ends are tied up we can begin your next adventure.

Kahlan Palance -- AC 26/17/21 -- CMD 32 -- HP 158/158
Sunday June 26th, 2011 6:53:09 AM

Kahlan takes notice of the Paladin's armor, and then to the men lying dead on the ground. "Nine to one... those are tough odds no matter how you slice it. He must be rather skilled with that elven blade of his."

Kahlan looks down at the Slaver and back up to the Paladin. "It's a pleasure to meet you Sir Elowyn, I am Kahlan Palance, Paladin and Loyal Servant of Domi. These are my companions, Tishe' Weaver, Snafu Ravenshoe, and Almar Blackhand." She says, turning to each in turn.

For Kahlan's Appearance Highlight to display spoiler: {Kahlan is an extremely attractive human female. She has slightly above average height, and a lithe, athletic build and tan skin. Dark brown hair drops well below her shoulders, though it is usually pulled back. Her eyes are a deep green. She stands at the ready, a long, curved, blade on her left hip, and a much smaller curved blade on her right. Both blades are as beautiful as their owner, even glowing with holy light when her hand slides to their hilts. Her armor fits her well, beautiful, yet strong and unyielding. It's dark color doesn't reflect light, and it's fit keeps it silent as she moves, allowing her to move about undetected. While in battle Kahlan fights with deadly precision, and beautiful grace.

Tishe' gazes at the carnage and notes the immediate acceptance of Kahlan by this stranger. Well, Harlan is definitely subdued, there was a fight, and the paladins should know and trust each other... She saves any misgivings for another day, knowing her mercurial attention span will never bring it back.

"I think Harlan is safest when unconscious", she tells Ramen and the Cinnamon Protectors. "Lets be about it, and then Snafu, could you teleport ALL of us direct to the Pitchfork Council?"

Monday June 27th, 2011 2:43:20 PM

(Welcome YVES and great to have you aboard!)

Thar smiles as the young lass falls asleep in his arms and he whispers softly to her that he'll protect her no matter what. He kisses her gently on the forehead and enjoys the tender moment. However, a serious expression soon returns to his face, as he realizes that time for pleasure and enjoyment must wait. He looks up at the clouds and tries to gauge if he'll have time to take reverie and rest for a bit before nightfall arrives. After all, he needs some time to memorize some spells that would work vs. the demon if he's going to have any chance to protect the girl that seems to have stolen his heart so quickly....

He also stays watchful for any threats or dangers that may come during this time while staying still, quiet and reserved... (Perc = 41, Stealth = 39 (nat'l 20))

DM Highlight to display spoiler: {(OOC - Do I have time to take a rest and memorize new spells before the time that she described (when bad guy usually arrived - midnight?) occurs? If so, I'll tell you what my updated spells are...)}

DM David Thar Highlight to display spoiler: { Sure. She said she expected them at midnight. Since she has told you they favor darkness I am figuring you would wake her before dusk. That should give you enough time to prep spells. Also, even the link you sent me crashes Google docs on me. I don't know why your sheet does it. You know the pause while a sheet loads and all of the pages get expanded? WHen I open your page that pause never ends and Firefox has to be shutdown. Weird.}

Ramen Elowyn AC 24, HP 105
Monday June 27th, 2011 5:48:57 PM

ooc> Hello everyone. I'm looking forward to the new game. Thanks for the welcome!

The paladin of Pantheon places his armored boot on the back of Harlan's neck before saluting the party with his blade.

" My thanks for your welcome Lady Palance. We of Pantheon sing the praises to the god Domi and his followers. Your ways are kind and just and we give thanks for your deeds.

The armored half elf sports a grey cloak and tabard. A linen badge over his heart is sewn in gold, copper and silver thread with the gavel symbol of his god. The badge marks him as a keeper of justice. A roaming man of law and mercy of his faith.

" I will gladly accompany you. "
Pointing down to his last remaining prey.
" This one needs to be brought to justice for his deeds as his soul has been darkened by unspeakable deeds. Those other ones have already been judged and found wanting.

"Besides, I have been sent by the Judge Patriarch of my Order to find you. "

DM David -- A familiar Inn...--
Monday June 27th, 2011 7:44:02 PM

Almar Blackhand looked the paladin over. Capable was his first assessment. A great weapon like that, in confined quarters, against a half score of cutthroats and thieves would mean he was better than capable. Maybe there was something to all this hub-bub about the god's watching over you. Maybe he should talk more to this man.
The Hobgoblin sheathed his scimitar and fixed the barkeep with his gaze. " This un did nothing during the fight? Claimed this was a reputable place I imagine. Had never seen any of this lot here before?" Almar strode among the dead, His black halfplate shocking over top of the yellow padding he wore beneath it. He toed over a few of the corpses, getting a good look at them. The others recognize some of them because they were there the time the group scouted for Sharon. He spits on the floor. "Well I recognize some of them. Low life cutthroats that would cut you purse if you were too drunk, and your throat if you were not drunk enough. All of them was here regularly. Seen them each time we came looking for one of the missing ones I did. The valley is a happier place for your work here today." He steps up to the Paladin of Pantheon and offers his rotten, blackened right hand to be shaken. " Almar Blackhand, formerly of the Mailed Fist, Currently chamberlain of the Cinnamon Protector's Tower. Well met my good Paladin."
Almar looks to Tishe as if asking permission to proceed. He told himself he wouldn't act as their sheriff or any such thing. He also probably told himself that he wouldn't wear his armor most of the time, or spar for most of the day. Fine way that turned out. At Tishe's nod the Hobgoblin pulls forth a parchment from a scroll tube no one noticed on his belt. He holds the letter up in front of him and approaches the barkeep.
" What's yer name, cur!?"
Shaking and sweating the barkeep answers in a stutter. " Ron...Ronald Halprin."
"You have a deed for this cess pool I imagine?"
"I do, but I don't think..."
" I didn't tell you to think, I asked for yer deed. Is it legal?"
"Yes. Yes sir."
"Well then Ron Halprin, by the order of the Cinnamon Protectors you are to appear at the next meeting of the Pitchfork Council. That meeting would be in two days I believe. At that meeting you will answer charges that these fellows attempted to stop a duly authorized agent of the Council from collecting a wanted man and that they worked for you in doing so. The council will decide your fate from there."

Almar sets the letter of summons on the bar. The seal of the Council is already on it. As he turns away, he adds one more thing." Oh, and Ron. Should you run, they'll find you. Harlan ran once, look at him now. Even if you are found innocent, which I doubt, if I find out that you knew Harlan was dealing in slaves here in your bar, I'll burn it down. If I think you profited from it, you'll be inside it when I do."

Once they are outside, Almar turns to the group. " I did not want to be your lawman in WatcHaven before. Now it seems I cannot put aside my past where laws and rules were my world. Where because of those laws and rules anyone that could follow them was called Brother and Comrade. I crave that structure still it seems. I had Lady Dulcet make me one of those writs when last I saw her, In case I needed it as a hired sword of the Council. By your leave I will have her make me a few more when we see her. If I was out of line, I apologize most heartily."

DM David -- Whodunnit--
Monday June 27th, 2011 8:08:19 PM

Thar allows Helena some time to rest. Obviously the girl has not slept in days and if she is to be of any use tonight in the fight she will need her rest. He rolls what she said over and over in his mind, looking for loopholes and untruths. He can find none. He wakes her an hour and a half before dusk, to allow them to reach her home before dark. All the way there he is sure he sees spots of darkness appear in the trees. Always behind him, always in cover to thick for him to get to them easily. He can feel the eyes of whatever is in that darkness on them all the way home.
When they reach the house they find the door barred from the inside. Helena smiles at this." My hmama has done as I bid her and fortified the house. They will find no easy entry tonight." The house is a single room with a screened off pair of beds at the back. A large oven casts off waves of heat from where a simple hearth would normally stand. Helena's mama, you assume, Is a large woman in her early forties. Built for working and apparently fighting, she is not as beautiful as her daughter, but shares her long dark hair and tired expression. She wears sturdy scalemail and is sharpening a rather large waraxe as you enter the house. She appears to know how to use both the axe and the armor. The room shows signs of combat, but most curious are what look like small burst patterns on the floor, as if a small incendiary device had gone off in several spots in the room.
Helena bursts into the tale of how Thar answered her plea and has come to save them. Her mother looks Thar up and down and then returns to sharpening the waraxe she had been working on as they entered. She appears to be injured from the long nights of fighting to protect her daughter and bone tired from the lack of sleep.

Tishe' (AC:27 CMD:19 HP 107/107)
Monday June 27th, 2011 8:38:54 PM

Tishe' stands in the center of the room, allowing Almar to set the summons on the owner; guilty or innocent, the Pitchfork Council will decide. Either way, the lawless in this area have been put on notice, the story of this afternoon will quickly spread.

"You did good, but I don't want you to be the lead for the Cinnamon Protectors. However, having a supply of writs that the team can keep around will reinforce that we are part of the legitimate authority of the Valley, and not vigilantes." Tishe' makes sure Almar has time to get the writs for the group, and then keeps them in her Pants O Plenty.

After delivering Harlan to the Pitchfork Council, Tishe' asks Snafu to teleport them all back to WatcHaven and have evening meal with Thar and Edmund.

Snafu - AC 30, HP 112/112
Tuesday June 28th, 2011 11:04:23 AM

Snafu can't help but smile as he watches Almar throwing his weight around with the barkeep. "Well done Almar. The message will spread far and wide after today... that's for certain."

With that business done, Snafu focused his attention on getting Harlan to the Pitchfork Council. "Can't teleport unconcious, can you?" Snafu muttered as he kept a small sap readied in case the Slaver woke up.

"To the Council, and then home in time for dinner!" Snafu said enthusiastically.

Thar,
Tuesday June 28th, 2011 3:51:32 PM

As Helena shares their story, Thar takes a look around the home, trying to find the most defensible position. (ways enemies might come towards them, strong walls, quality of the roof, etc...)...

He then greets the mother warmly and says, "Ma'am, thank you for allowing me into your home. I know this is a difficult time but I've sworn to defend your daughter from those who wish to harm her. I must admit I'm smitten with her and once this is over, I'd like to talk to you about courting her... (blushing)... (then back to a serious note...) I'm an experienced healer and can I treat your injuries before nightfall? I have a feeling we're going to get visited by some unwelcome guests soon... I'm going to rest briefly and try to prepare us as best as I can verses the demon and his friends... Is there anything I can do for you right now before Helena and I both prepare, and is there anything you can tell me to help with defending your home and beloved daughter?"

Resting, he memorizes the best spells to help them defend the home and woman that he is developing feelings for...

0 level - Detect Magic, Guidance, Resistance, Light (2)
1 level - Bane, Bless, Det Evil, Divine Favor, PfEvil, Sanctuary, Obscuring Mist
2 level - Align Weapon, Consecrate, Delay Poison, Remove Paralysis, Resist Energy, Restoration (lessor), Spirit Weapon
3 level - Daylight (2), Dispel Magic, Invis Purge, Searing Light, McVE
4 level - Dimensional Anchor, Divine Power, Sending, SM 4, Holy Smite
5 level - SM5, Flame Strike, Spell Resistance, True Seeing

Once he's done, he immediately casts Sending, where he gives a 25 word update to Edmund of his situation, where he's at, what's going to soon happen, etc. (DM - If you want me to write it out, I will but wasn't sure...)

Finally, once midnight approaches, he'll cast a few spells in the minutes before the fun begins... (DM - Again, I can do it in this post, but figured you'd want to do it in the next one? Just curious...)

DM David -- Whodunnit--

The woman regards Thar gravely, pointing to he wounds and saying" Hthey huse ha hgreat hdeal hof hpoison. Hmost hof hit hmy hbody hwas able htoo deafeat, hbut hnot hall. She has a few serious wounds ( about 15 points of damage) and seems to be suffering from some strength loss from the poison she was not able to resist.
As Thar sits down to pray for his powers for the night he is pretty sure that if he were to convince them to allow him to erect an altar in here, he could attach a spell to the altar with a Consecrate spell. Even without this he should gain some benefit from the power of his God watching over this place. He also feels that a Circle versus evil will probably help protect all of those in the house. Nina, Helena's mother has done a fair job of securing their home. The windows are shuttered and barred, so is the door and the table has been turned on its side and braced with barrels of flour to provide some cover from those attacking through the door..

( As far as the wording, I would just make sure Edmund knows what is going on and that you want this to be done by you, for your own reasons. Mama has given you more insight so if you feel any spell changes are needed, make them. Cast your prep spells and I will have them come to visit 8).)

Lady Dulcet is happy to take Harlan into custody. She also makes arrangements for a trial at the next Council meeting for the owner of the Inn, Ronald Halprin. Her scribe is perfectly willing to make several more writs, writing out and sealing a neat dozen, each in their own scroll tube.
Snafu teleports the Heroes back to the tower and Mouse has a beautiful roast prepared with potatoes and a rhubarb pie for dessert. As the pie is cleared from the table there is a knock at the door. Lars leads in several well dressed men wearing the symbol of the Connoisseurs of Combat. They are looking for Kahlan, Thar and Snafu.

Tishe' (AC:27 CMD:19 HP 107/107)
Wednesday June 29th, 2011 12:18:08 PM

Tishe' enjoys dinner, the tender roast, buttery roots, tangy and sweet rhubarb. "You have outdone yourself, Mouse! Keep feeding us like this and I'm going to have to rough it out in the woods just to make sure I don't put on more weight!" And the witch is not a small girl to begin with...

The Connoisseurs arrive, and Tishe' welcomes them to WatcHaven. "Many Shadows, I am glad of your company. We have a training ground on the side of the Tower that Snafu, Kahlan, and Thar may show you.... where is Thar by the way?"

Tishe' herself will withdraw for the evening, spending time in the small Sargrass garden and keeping company with Falmar and Dondit before going to her quarters for the night.

Edmund (HP: 95/95, AC: 17, CMD: 20, Sp.Resist: 18)
Wednesday June 29th, 2011 3:11:50 PM

((Welcome, Yves!))

Edmund receives Thar's message via Sending, but doesn't feel much better about the entire situation.

"Hardly encouraging, hardly encouraging," he mutters to himself. "And where the devil are the rest of them?"

But within a few moments, they arrive, and a most excellent dinner is laid out including Edmund's favourite, rhubarb pie. He sends the chef his compliments no less than seven times, and after dinner heads to the kitchen to thank Mouse personally, and to provide yet more positive feedback on the satisfactory nature of the supper. Edmund very much likes roast, and thinks more roast and more potatoes would certainly be acceptable. And mutton, and pork pies, and chops in sauce...

Over dinner, Edmund explains away Thar's absence and intimates that he is spending the night with some other visiting prelates who are passing by, through not through, the village. "Monks, queer sort, but no worries, I've got ahold of him via message and I'm certain he is fine. I receive regular updates," Edmund says confidently. "He's meant to be back tomorrow, no worries!"

The addition of a Paladin to the group gives Edmund cause to smile merrily, and he consequently has a bit more wine than he probably should have. Apparently, Edmund reveres paladins, and he looks forward to becoming good friends with Ramen.

After supper, when the Conoisseurs arrive, Edmund slowly makes his way up to his room and pours a bath, fully intent on hunting Thar down tomorrow if he does not return promptly when expected. "Most inconvenient!" he declares whilst he pours water from a copper kettle into the bath. "And most unwise!"

Thar,  d20+19=39 ; d20+8=15 ; d20+25=34 ;
Wednesday June 29th, 2011 5:59:19 PM

BEFORE resting for the night, Thar would have used up a spell or 2, or his healing ability to heal both mother and daughter. That way, he'll be up to full after he rests and won't need to heal either woman before the fight...

He'll also memorize glyph of warding instead of Invisibility Purge...

1. After resting, he'll help block the door, windows and other points of egress... He'll cast the glyph upon the door, commanding that the 2nd evil creature that comes through triggers the glyph, which would do SONIC damage (blast glyph)...

2. He'll then create a small altar to YHWH, consecrating the home and all occupants vs. evil...

3. (BEFORE REsting) - He'll check for tracks outside the house, trying to see where the bad guys came in before, what paths, how many, etc. He'll go outside and find a bunch of dead or dry leaves, putting them outside the entrances, windows, on the roof, etc., so that creatures would make noise when stepping on them, thus giving him an alert... He tries to keep it natural looking so that it won't seem obvious (Survival/Track for tracks and leaves = 39 (nat'l 20), Know (Nat)? = 15)

When midnight nears, he'll cast a few more preparatory spells, and ask the young lass to prepare daylight spells for fighting the demon...

Bow ready, spells cast, door warded, he's prepared, watchful and waiting..... Perc = 34

If time starts to run short on his spells, he has his rod of extend ready to keep them going a bit longer (but he'll probably save 1 charge if he has to)..

OOC
Thar, per the recent casting limit page 220 please unlearn 2 of your 1st level spells ( they are the spells used to heal Nina).
IC
Thar makes his preparations and is satisfied that he has made enough to see them through. At midnighthe hears a fair number of beings outside, checking the entrances. They prod the shutters, test the door and generally check all the ways into the house. Finding them all locked or barred, the beings go silent for a few unnerving moments. Then, there is a rap on the door ( no rustling of the leaves is noted) and then a voice speaks calmly, in a deep sounding, but husky whisper you hear the Demon speak.
" Nina, I have come for the girl. If you just give her over to me there need be no more bloodshed. If you want, you can come and rule beside me. You are not so homely as your ancestor was, and the realm of shadows makes everyone look better. Open the door and let me have her and you will be well taken care of. What do you say? hmmm?"
Nina stands tall and strikes her shield with her axe." HI hsay hthe hsame has hI htold hyour hminions hand hyou hto hyour hface...HNEVER!!"
" Pity, well we will do it your way then. Captains, to me. Darken the place. Soldiers, form up on the door. Goodbye Nina, this ends tonight."
Suddenly the room is plunged into deeper darkness, multiple pools overlapping in the center of the room. The there is a rush of air and there is SOMETHING in the room with you, only inches away, but screened by the darkness. You sense rather than see a large mouth full of dripping fangs and a pair of rending claws somewhere between you and the door.
" Ahh, you brought a guest... a man, how quaint. It appears he also believes in a god. I hope that comforts him in the next few moments, while I tear him limb from limb."
You hear claws scrabble on the inside of the door and then the bar is thrown wide and the door surges open.
Helena is terrified, Thar can hear it in her voice and tell by the shaking hand she touches him with. Yet she casts her spell and touches Thar's altar. There is a brief flash of light and then the normal lamplight of the room returns. Thar faces a shadowy figure, Slightly taller than a man. The only portions of it that he can tell are physically present are it's teeth and claws. The teeth gleam as the creature looks at Thar and smiles, the claws spread as the creature prepares to use then to rake Thar.
Behind the creature are a dozen humanoids. One is tall and dressed head to toe in spotlessly clean black leather armor. Every inch of it's flesh is covered. It holds two curved shortswords. It is the first thing through the door. The other humanoids are squat little things dressed in what appears to be layer upon layer of filthy rags. They each hold a dagger and nearly fight one another to enter the house. Finally one does enter and Thar's Glyph glows briefly and then explodes. Pandemonium ensues as only one of the five squat creatures in range manages to cover his ears, the rest explode into a brilliant flash of light ( DC 13 fort save x4 Thar or blinded for 3 rounds). The tall skinny creature appears wounded as well by the blast. Nina, outside of Thar's spell but within reach of the tall man and the Demon leaps forward and buries her axe in the tall man's chest. She tears it free and makes another swing at the Demon, and her axe passes right through it.
From behind the exploding creatures a wail can be heard as the rest of them all clutch at their eyes.

DM David --Connoisseur 's Come Calling--
Wednesday June 29th, 2011 7:09:30 PM

The scribe with the connoisseur contingent looks at Snafu and says" Nice try, but we have folk put a drop of their blood on the contract for a reason my boy. Snafu Ravenshoe is a Half elf. It says so right here."
" So, where are these others? If mister Thar is indisposed until morning that is fine. It is too late for a testing tonight. We are weary from the road and you should be at your best for the competition. Kahlan Palance? Snafu Ravenshoe? Are they here?"

DM - JC The Connoisseurs

OOC: I'll be taking over the Connoisseurs encounter after DM David finishes up with the other goings on. It'll be all done without combat, and I'll be writing it up over the next couple days, probably have it ready by the 6th.

Snafu - AC 30, HP 112/112  d20+21=33 ;
Wednesday June 29th, 2011 10:10:43 PM

"I assure you, I am Snafu Ravenshoe" Snafu explained. "Perhaps somewhere in the contract it mentions that I am a spellcaster, yes? And perhaps you've heard that there are some magic that can turn a half-elf into a Liontaur? Well, that's what happened to Snafu the half-elf... the problem is I'm not exactly sure how it happened, so I will remain a Liontaur. Not that I mind, for the extra paws come in quite handy." (diplomacy 33)

"Anyhow, here I am, and I am ready for your challenge, and I'd be happy to show you where we train. In the meanwhile, perhaps you could share a little information about what the challenge is?"

OOC:
Regarding tactics, Snafu would probably utilize greater invisibility and then try to get sneak attacks. If allowed he might also utilize summons in order to get flanking attacks. Depending on what's at stake, he might utilize some of his magic wands or scrolls in the battle.

As the flash ignites in the room, he tries to close his eyes quickly (Fort = 36) and manages to avoid any damage...

Thar stares at the demon's face and says in a determined glance, "Vermin, you've threatened these women for the last time. And yes, they've brought me to help stop you... I usually give people a chance to surrender but I'm not about to waste my breath on something as pitiful as you... "

He takes a 5' step backwards or to the side to get away from the demon (to avoid AoO) and calls out, "As a great man named Al once said, Say hello to my little friend," and casts, "SM5" bringing forth Boris the Bralani Azata directly between him and the demon...

Upon arriving, Boris will swing his magical scimitar and try to interfere with the demon... (If the enemy is incorporeal, then the magical weapon still hits but does 1/2 dmg

Attack 1 Hit AC 25 for 13 (6 if halved)
Attack 2 Hit AC 28 (Nat'l 20!!! - Check = 11... so probably not crit) for 14 dmg (7 if halved)

The demon appears amused by Nina's attemt to hurt it, but the Bralani gets its attention." So, that's how it is eh? I FEAR you are still in over your head " A sickening wave of fear issues forth from the Demon, filling the room in front of it.( no save needed for Thar, spell failed SR check) Nina drops her axe, turns and runs. As she turns to flee the tall man drives both of his shortswords into her back. One skips off her scalemail, but the other drives deep into her shoulder. As he wrenches it free you notice the black slime that coats the blade. Nina fights off the poison's effect and continues to run toward the back of the house. Boris stands to and stares the demon down. (Thar please act for your minion) Helana stands her ground, waits a split second as her mother dashes past her and then points toward the demon and it's minions. Lightning runs down her arm and streaks across the room as she unleashes her spell. The tall man staggers directly into the path of the bolt and is killed. His body crumples to the floor just like the short creature did...except his body explodes into a fireball that engulfs the room. The fire washes over Boris, Thar and the Demon, leaving both unhurt ( didn't penetrate SR) Nina takes the full damage from the blast while Helena nimbly skips aside and takes only half damage. The blinded Creepers behind the demon take various amounts of damage as some jump away and others do not. The demon is also struck by the lightning and actually hurt by it, The creepers, some already on fire are all struck by the bolt as well and all die in a huge flash of lights.

DM - JC The Connoisseurs
Thursday June 30th, 2011 9:52:56 PM

A scribe that was with the connoisseurs steps forward. He is a smallish man who wears spectacles and is going bald. He speaks up," I was given three contracts, each of which was sealed with a drop of blood. They can only be opened with a matching drop of blood from the people whom they are here to test." He indicates the people with him.
One of them, a human male about 6 feet tall, wears a simple robe, and has a tattoo of a dragon on the right side of his face. His hair is pulled tightly to a top knot, which then is braided into a tail that hangs almost to his waist. Another is a female, barely reaching 5 foot, is dressed flamboyantly in a white shirt with poofy sleeves, and a vest buttoned up. She has leather britches and knee high black boots, a rapier with a golden basket hilt hangs at her side. The last of the three wields a longsword, since it hangs at his side. He wears a suit of chain armor, that is made to fit his 6 foot 6 inch height. He has shaved his head, but has a daggered goatee, that is so black it's almost blue.
The female speaks up, "My name is Lucinda Devereau, I prefer Cindy. If I hear anyone call me Lucy, you will regret it, trust me. This dour fellow to my right is named Maxfield Hatzenbuhler, and the silent one to my left is only known as Whisper, he doesn't speak, but he listens real well. Before you ask, we won't know whom we are to test until the scrolls are opened, so I guess we'll let Benny take care of that.
We expect housing and a meal, or direct us to where we can, it's been a long day."

Benny speaks up, "We'll open the scrolls in the morning when all three of you are here. It's only fair that none have an advantage over another. And no, not even I know who is to face whom, so it's pointless to ask. Now, to clean up, eat and take our rest if you please."

At this point Almar speaks up, "Mouse, four plates of food for our guests," then looking to the new arrivals," we can supply a single room, or we can send a runner to the Twin Tankards to secure you rooms there as needed. I'm the steward, Almar Blackhand. I look after the place when the others are traveling about."

Edmund (HP: 95/95, AC: 17, CMD: 20, Sp.Resist: 18)
Friday July 1st, 2011 1:58:35 AM

Edmund spends most of the evening hiding in his room, reading a book from the warm confines of his bathtub. There is also a pot of tea to hand.

Throughout the evening he mutters things like, "Ridiculous," and "Shouldn't have run off alone," to himself. "What's the point of an archmage if no one has the wit to bring him along," also features prominently in his grumbling.

When he does finally get dressed before bed, he makes his way down the tower once again, and finds Ramen to wish him a pleasant evening. Speaking at a tremendous rate, the half-elf launches into conversation.

"I know it's a bit odd what with things being so busy and all," the sorcerer says. "Dashed confused I was, too. Quite jarring, suddenly thrust here. But, feel free to treat Greenleaf Tower and the town of Edmun--er, ah, ah... Watchaven, yes--feel free to treat the village of Watchaven as a second home for as long as you stay. Everything's at your disposal, and if you need anything, don't hesitate to let me know. I'll see if I can get it sorted for you. I imagine you'd like to meet our cleric, but he'll be back tomorrow. Enjoy the pies, really. Lovely pies. Rhubarb, quite fond of it myself, asked for it, I did. Glad to see it on the menu. Should be more where that came from. Hoping for a bit of mutton--you like mutton, yes? Lovely, on a spit, with some rosemary rubbed in--positively delish. Anyway, where was I? Right--help yourself to the pies--or whatever, really. Tea if you like, lots of that as well. Goodnight!"

Edmund seizes the Paladin's hand and shakes it vigorously for some time before excusing himself and returning to his room. The whole surreal episode is accented by the fact that Edmund is wearing a pale blue robe with little golden stars and moons on it, and a matching pair of slippers with a pointy night cap, like some sort of child's imagining of a wizard.

Snafu attempted to engage his guests in conversation during dinner. He kept the conversation fairly simple at first, but eventually he'd bring up topics like the Connoisseurs, fighting tactics, and anything else that would give him some measure of the people he was eating diner with. Thar surveys the situation and winces when the young lass is stabbed several times... But she's still fighting and he doesn't need to heal her yet... He taunts the demon some more, "Is that the best you've got? Fighting an older woman and her sweet daughter? What kind of weak and sorry excuse for a demon are you? I can't believe you've lived this long you pathetic vermin!"

For now however, he decides that it's time to show it the power of his divine magic... He casts Holy Smite on the evil outsider... A flash of light explodes out and magical energy hits the demon, blinding it for 1 round and doing 36 pts of magic damage... (should do full since it's not a "corporeal" source...?)

Note on Spell Save and SR -> Sanctuary adds +6 to DC of positive spells and since Holy Smite is vs. Evil creatures (and a "good" spell), I assume it's a positive energy spell? If so, then DC is 27... If not, then its 21. => Will Save DC 27 (or 21) for 1/2 dmg and no blindness ... Thar's Check to Overcome SR = 27

Meanwhile, his friend Boris continues slashing at the demon, cutting and stabbing with its magical weapon...

Attack 2 = Hit AC 27 for 11 dmg (1/2 if incorporeal enemy)

The Swashbuckler carries the conversation for all three of the Connoisseurs with very little effort. The Dour one spoke maybe five words during the two hours before they retired to the provided room. About an hour afterwards ....
Everyone in Tower make a Perception roll DC 10.
After Roll, all Highlight to display spoiler: {If you fail, you continue to sleep, everyone else see below.}

There is a chain of explosions and almost a strobe light effect of bright lights.
Before you can reach the towers entrance there is another chain of explosions and strobe lights.

It will take you a minimum of 1, more likely 2 rounds to reach the entrance of your tower and then 2-3 rounds to reach the house where all the excitement is coming from.

As you are making your way down the tower, you see Whisper dive out one of the windows and slide down the outside the tower. Cindy joins him from the third floor, and they are both lost in the darkness.

As lights flash and explosions thud, the sorcerer hustles down the stairs. Others take more instantaneous routes of exit. Edmund is having none of it, and sticks to the stairs, heading rapidly towards the exit of the tower.

As he goes, he shouts on the top of his lungs, aiming to wake anyone still sleeping in the tower. "To arms! To arms! Awake! To arms!"

The Connoisseurs all gather about the base of the tower, Whisper is completely unharmed from his dive out the third floor window, Cindy looks no worse for wear and says, "Is that the other one? the one you informed us was indisposed? If so, inform him, we are here to test him in the morning. If there is nothing else, we shall return to our room, and go back to our rest."
About that time, the third member of the small group arrives at the towers entrance. Cindy addresses him, "It seems to be over, we are heading back to our room." With that all three of them head back inside and trudge back up the stairs, you can hear the door close behind them.

Everyone else seems to be awake, now to find out what all the excitement was.

Edmund arrives pretty quickly, all things considered, and surveys the scene. His robe has been thrown on, and consequently his night gown, stars, moons, and all, can be seen peeking out from beneath it. He is still wearing his slippers and nightcap.

After a few minutes, he surmises something of what has happened, given Thar's earlier messages, but thinks it prudent to keep his mouth shut--an unusual decision for the sorcerer. He does, however, give Thar a thoroughly acidic look.

"It appears that the festivities have ended," Edmund says drily. "Unless it must be discussed now, I think it best that we return to the tower and investigate in the morning, provided that all of the participants--" here Edmund looks at Thar sternly--"are in good health and need no further attention from us, or the surrounding community."

Once the demon falls, Thar breathes a long sigh of relief. At least the immediate threat's gone, but he before he relaxes, he checks on the young lass and her mother. "Helena and Nina, are you OK? Come here and let me heal you where the demon struck. He's gone and I have a feeling that you've seen the last of him or his friends. Now that I'm protecting you, his cronies will think twice about coming back again."

He uses up 2 1st level spells to heal the ladies (11 and 12 points) if needed... He then helps them clean up some of the damage to the house, as the sonic ward and demon's minion's broke the boy scout code of never leaving a trace behind...

To his approaching friends, he calls out, "Am I glad you're here! I'm not sure what Edmund told you, but we found the person who was leaving us treats. It seems a demon tried to claim her for himself, but we managed to destroy him and his friends. (He tells them briefly about the battle, Helena's story, etc.) She's a beautiful girl and what a fighter... I think I'm going to try to see her some more once things calm down and I think the attraction's mutual.... Now that you're here, we've got a little mess and residue left over that I could use your help cleaning up."

At an appropriate moment, he asks Nina, "Madam, as I said before we were rudely interrupted by the demon, I'd like your permission to see your daughter some more. I'm interested in courting her and would like your blessing..."

To Snafu, he says with a wink, "OK, you've got me on that one."

(OOC - DM - I was reading your descriptions of different houses, towers, etc. and am not sure where Nina/Helena's home is located in relation to our base of operations. Is it in the town or far away? Where is it on the map?)

" I wasn't leaving 'us' treats,my Thar, I was leaving 'you' treats." With this said Helena pecks Thar on the cheek and turns and disappears inside, helping her mother clean up.

OOC
I don't have the map handy, but they are on the edge of town, as I recall it wasn't a really big town so they are fairly close to the tower. Nina does bake for the Inn and for private sale so she would need to be in town somewhere.

DM - JC Aftermath at midnight.

Nina's and Helena's home is at the outskirts of the small village, the far side of the buildings from the tower.

Thar:
You explain to the others everything that has gone on, and they also inform you that your testers have arrived, for your entrance to the Connoisseurs.
You have a bit more sense than normal, and wait until the others have left before you approach Nina about courting her daughter.
"HI hdon't hsee hmuch htrouble hin hallowing hyou to hcourt Helena. Hbut hthere hwill hbe hno hfunny hstuff, hor hthere hwill hbe ha hreconning. Hseeing hthat hyou hare ha holy hman, hyour hswarn hword hwill hsuffice has hyour hguarentee hof hpropper hbehaviour."

Helena is listening to her mother and is nodding behind her out of her line of sight, she seems very happy, she also looks exhausted again, even after the brief rest she got earlier.
It's almost one bell after midnight before you know it, and you need to be up early in the morning.

Everyone else:
After Thar finishes his explanations it's obvious he wants some private time with the family. You all more or less make it back to your tower, and Almar is standing out front with the rest of his men, all are armed to the teeth."What is the trouble, should we be worried over it?"

OOC:
I'll be doing the story of the entrance test and posting it tomorrow, where you will learn just who Whisper, Cindy and Maxfield are and just what their skills seem to be. please leave me a list of any spells you cast to prep, and if you cast in combat, so I can make it interesting. "I haven't told them anything, per your instructions!" he says irritably. "But I didn't expect to be waked in the night for these... these... these... illuminations!"

With that, the sorcerer stomps off back towards the tower, stumbling almost at once because he is wearing slippers, and they aren't for stomping. Bending down to put them back on, he tries to regain his dignity and strides away, instead, declaring, to those within earshot, "Pfui!"

"Well, if all is well, perhaps we'll be able to return to our good night's sleep."

Still smiling, the witch follows her own advice, and waits to watch the Connisieur's contest on the morrow.

Thar also thanks Nina for her blessing and says, "Yes ma'am, I give you my word that I will be a gentleman at all times and protect her honor."

Turning to Helena, he kisses her on the check and says gently, "I've got to get back home and rest, as I've got a testing tomorrow. When I'm done, I'll come back and maybe we could go out for a picnic and get some peace and quiet? We haven't had much time to get to know each other and once I'm done with my business with the Connoisseurs, things will hopefully be a bit slower."

Once done, he turns and heads home with his companions. When he gets into his room, he prays a thanksgiving for his, Helena and Nina's safety, and then memorizes some spells, as he's got a busy day tomorrow and needs some rest...

DM - JC Aftermath at midnight.
Thursday July 7th, 2011 7:06:05 PM

The morning dawns crystal clear, the sun a bright yellow, that seems to soak into the ground, almost like a slow steady rain. The three connoisseurs are up at first light, and Cindy informs the cook that they will eat after the testing, as it will work up a good hunger.
The Scribe who arrived with them, calls Kahlan to approach him. As Kahlan presents herself to the scribe, the man reaches into his robe and withdraws a scroll, rolled and sealed. Also in his hand is a stylist. "Please extend one finger, I will need a drop of blood to unseal the scroll."
Kahlan decides to extend the pinky on his off hand. The scribe quickly jabs it with the pen. It is indeed sharp and a it draws out a drop of blood rather quickly. He brings the pen tip to the seal, the seal alights in a flash, and the scroll is unsealed. "You are indeed Kahlan Palance, if you weren't the scroll would have immolated it'self. Now, let us see which of the testers you will be facing." Scanning the scroll quickly, he announces, "You shall be facing our lady Cindy Devereau. It should be interesting to say the least."
He pulls out another scroll and calls out Thar ail Baerer's name. He goes through the same deal gathering a drop of blood and unsealing the scroll. After scanning it quickly, "You shall be facing off against Whisper, again it should be interesting."
He pulls out the last scroll he is carrying and looks at it, then at Snafu. "You claim to be Snafu, it says here that the person I should be seeing is a half-elf. If I do the blood drop test on you and the scroll self immolates, you shall be forever bared from joining the Organization, are you sure you wish to proceed?"
Snafu walks up to him and extends a finger"Snafu knows who Snafu is, even if you do not, test him."
The scribe gathers the drop of blood and applies it to the seal, the seal absorbs the blood, it flares up, but doesn't open, yet neither does it immolate itself. He stares at it and just as he's about to say something, the scroll opens up. "You have my apology, it does indeed seem that you are Snafu the half-elf. You obviously know already that you will be facing Maxfield Hatzenbuhler, He is the senior member of the testers here, it will be interesting indeed."

He indicates that the group should proceed out of doors, once outside in the training grounds he
stands at the top step so he can look down upon everyone.
"The testing shall start in a few minutes, each participant has one minute to prepare and then the testing shall commence, the testing shall continue until the loser calls out he concedes. At that time I shall dispense some healing and then the next testing will begin. After all testing is finished, the testers shall converse amongst themselves to determine if the testees are worthy to be inducted to The Connoisseurs. If they are deemed worthy, then you shall be inducted by the leader of the testers. Is that all clear? Good, In four minutes the first testing shall begin with the preparatory period.
The order of testing shall be random, will the testees please draw straws, shortest goes first, the longest last."

He holds three straws and Snafu draws first, Thar second and Kahlan gets the remaining straw.

TesteesHighlight to display spoiler: { All three please roll D100, lowest to highest is the order, any ties, I'll decide
order.
}

Everyone else, You can hear Almar quietly taking bets on the outcome of the testing, it appears from what you can hear, he thinks Thar has the toughest of the testers, even if he isn't the leader of the group.

OOC: feel free to roleplay tonight and tomorrow the results of the testing shall be known.

He sighs as he hears that he's got the hardest of the testers, but to add some humor, he looks at Edmund and nods towards Almar. He hopes Edmund gets the signal to take a bet on him... Maybe with luck they'll make a bit of money on this... Worse case.. they lose a bit...

(I'm envisioning the scene from Enter the Dragon where John Saxon fought the much bigger guy and his black friend (can't remember his name) took bets over the fight and eventually they made a good bit of money...)

For spells, Thar will memorize (the night before) the appropriate spells and cast the same ones that he did before the demon fight... Note with that last spell (Divine Power), he gets a fourth arrow with a full attack instead of just three (his normal)...

Also, he's got a few powers that go with his cleric war domain, and they give him a combat feat for x amount of rounds... He'll probably use this against an opponent that tries to hide or gain cover. Also, true seeing or other spells he has will be helpful vs. a stealthy opponent...

Finally, if he has a minute warning to prepare, will they allow him to summon a monster for help (Sum Mon V)? That's part of his SOP and a normal spell that he memorizes and casts early

Edmund makes his way down in the morning to watch the festivities. He has a meat pie in one hand and a cup of tea in the other. When Thar nods at him, Edmund raises his eyebrows and, after some thought, heads over to Almar.

"I hear some of the village worthies might be having a bit of a flutter on the outcome. I've got a fondness for clerics, and that Thar fellow seems worth laying a bit on--so, how about it?"

Edmund does some mental arithmetic in his head and tries to estimate what Thar would be likely to split. He comes to something not entirely unlike a reasonable figure.

"Think you can make out a wager of four thousand gold coins?" Edmund asks shrewdly. "On Thar to win, that is. The rest of the tower's denizens made a bundle in the caverns of the ratkin--but the only thing I got out of it was a lot of bruises and a smashing headache. I'd like to see if I can tip the balance back in my own favour."

Edmund grins at Almar, and adds, in a slightly gentler way, "Unless you're not a betting man, that is. In which case, I totally understand."

Snafu woke in the morning and cast his usual allotment of spells- Mage Armor and False Life. Once that was done he said goodbye to Hoot and made his way out to the training facility.

"Looks like I'm first" Snafu said a few minutes later, as he held the short straw in his hand (OOC- 27). "Wish me luck!"

Soon after Snafu started making his preparations, all the while keeping an eye on his opponent for any hints regarding the preparations he was making (Spellcraft check 23). First drew a rod and cast a quick Heroism spell. Next he put the rod away and cast a spell that caused him to shrink down in size. Next he drew out his new wand and managed to cast another spell (UMD, use wand= 34; success), and suddenly a white sickle made of ice appeared in his hand. He then put the wand away and cast a haste spell. Finally, just as the battle was about the begin, he cast a final spell that caused him to disappear.

"Thank you for this honor, Maxfield Hatzenbuhler" the invisible Snafu said. "I have trained hard for this day, and hope that I am for the task."

OOC- Tactics
Option 1- If Snafu is allowed to summon, he will. Summon augmented celestial lion or two, then cast haste on them plus a quickened ray of enfeeblement on the enemy. Then move in for some sneak attacks (from invisibility and/or flanks).

Option 2- The invisible Snafu will lead his attack off with a quickened ray of enfeeblement, and an impromptu sneak attack with a scorching ray. (5d6 for sneak attack, and two 4d6 rays that will do an additional 4 damage each for my bloodline). Snafu will then use stealth to move to a new position. He will continue with this tactic until he is forced into melee.

Option 3- If Max goes invisible or uses blur, Snafu will attempt to light him up with his wand of faerie fire, so he can get sneaks.

Option 4- If things go bad and it turns into a grapple, Snafu can cast silence and still spells (three times each). He can also use Escape Artist.

Option 5: If Max can see invisibility, Snafu will cast mirror image on himself.

If it goes to melee, Snafu will draw his short sword in his off-hand and fight. The ice sickle http://www.woldiangames.com/Woldipedia/index.php/Spell:_Eclip%27s_Ice_Sickle hits as a melee touch attack. +21/+21/+16 (damage d8+12+ 5d6 sneak damage; Short sword +22 (damage d6+2+5d6 sneak)

DM - JC Snafu's Testing
Friday July 8th, 2011 4:55:45 PM

Everyone quiets down as the signal to prepare is announced. Snafu summons a Celestial Lion, he then casts Haste upon both the lion and himself. While Snafu is preparing, Maxfield casts a couple of spells himself, Snafu can tell that one is an evocation and the other is an enchantment.
As he sends in the lion at the very beginning of the testing time. Snafu points at Maxfield and a purple
ray stretches out from his finger tips. It's dead on target, but suddenly, Maxfield raises his right hand
and the Ray of enfeeblement shatters and never touches him. He then points at the lion, unleashing
another spell, "Be gone, return from whence you came." And the lion winks out of existence.
"You'll need to try harder than that if you wish to succeed in this testing."
Maxfield directs at Snafu.
Snafu casts another spell in response to Maxfield's taunt. He winks out of sight, casting Greater Invisibility.
Snafu smiles to himself as he draws his weapons and rushes to get into melee range. While
invisible, Snafu also casts Mirror image. Keeping his distance he circles to the side and moves in close. That is when Snafu gets the surprise of his life.
"Snafu thinks you are more than what you seem, You have made Snafu visible somehow, Snafu guesses it will be left up to melee then."

After that surprise, the two of them get down to some serious sparing, Snafu using his rapier tries to
keep any attacks from hitting him all the while counter attacking at Maxfield. Snafu snuck a strike in on him and opened the back of Maxfield's hand with a riposte, and then Snafu sees the wound close itself, without any casting of spells, it literally just healed itself.
All the while Snafu is doing this, Maxfield gets a couple longsword hits in on him, but is also removing his mirror images at an alarming rate. As the final Image vanishes, Maxfield does something with his sword and Snafu finds himself rapier less.
Just as Snafu opens his mouth to say something smart, Maxfield flips the rapier end for end, offering him back the blade.
"I have seen enough Snafu, I shall render my judgment at the end with the other testers." He almost has a smile but it again vanishes faster than it appeared.

DM - JC Thar's Testing
Friday July 8th, 2011 5:17:54 PM

Thar having seen the first testing is uncertain if he should summon something to assist him, but in the end he decides to go ahead and summon the Bralani to assist. He appears, looks around and then comments. "Is this some sort of trial? If it is, I will gladly cheer you on, but you are not in grave danger from the looks of what I see here." That leaves Thar speechless, he is suddenly aware that it is time to start the testing.
Just as he starts drawing his arrow back to his cheek, Whisper opens the quiver on his hip, his bow almost magically appears in his hand.Thar gets off the very first shot, and his aim is true and the arrow from his first strike zips towards Whisper.
Holding his bow in his left hand, Whisper shifts his weight to the left and deflects the arrow of Thar's first
attack. He then starts trading shots with Thar, except at the beginning of each round he shoots two arrows. He also deflects one of Thar's arrows each round as well.
The shooting contest continues until both competitors have multiple arrows sticking out of them, Thar many more than whisper, he was avoiding a large number of the shots.
All of a sudden, Whisper makes his bow vanish as fast as it appeared, and the Scribe yells out "Cease fire, the testing is over."

DM - JC Kahlan's Testing
Friday July 8th, 2011 5:30:56 PM

Now that it's Kahlan's turn, Cindy walks over to her and says, "Good Luck, it should be quick."
Kahlan casts her spells, and Cindy does nothing, except to draw her rapier. It has a full basket hilts on it, and it appears to be made of gold. It matches the fine chainmail you can see peeking out from under her shirt and vest. The sleeves of the shirt and poofy (picture the three musketeers, but no tabbard), and make her movements seem strange, even though she is like watching water flow, she is that fluid in her moves.
She nods her head as time is called, and she winks at Kahlan, and then she just vanishes. A few moments later, Kahlan, feels a stabbing wound in her posterior. She spins and gets a couple attacks at Cindy again, one of which does draw some blood. Then she once again vanishes.
This goes on for longer than either of the other testings. Finally, Cindy vanishes again, but instead of appearing behind Kahlan, a few moments later, she appears with her other two testers."The test is over Kahlan. We shall have our decisions shortly.
Scribe, heal her please, I've already taken care of my wounds."

DM - JC The Connoisseurs after the testing
Friday July 8th, 2011 5:59:19 PM

As the testers gather together, off to the side, Everyone else gathers around to discuss what just happened.
Almar can be heard, "Just how are we supposed to declare a winner with those results. All bets are null and void, collect your bet now, or later on today. Any not collected become the property of me, since I'm the one making the odds."

Conversations soon turn into serious discussions over the tactics and spells used during the tests. The one most discussed is Snafu's test, some are saying that Maxfield has to be a Paladin, others say he's a Priest, none of you can determine just what he did. He obviously cast a dismissal to get ride of the lion, and someone mentions dispel magic being used to counter the ray, but the last effect, Snafu becoming visible stumps everyone.

The discussion ceases when the three return from their discussions.
Maxfield says, "Snafu, I deem you acceptable, I just needed to see how you fought up close, we are the Connoisseurs of Combat after all. After you got past all the trickery, you did well, well enough that we welcome you." He hands Snafu a small coin, that is similar in size to a gold piece, only it has a coat of arms on one side and a looking glass on the other. "It is your sign of belonging and indicates your level of membership. You also have the duties of paying your membership dues. Welcome to the Club."

Whisper steps in front of Thar, he holds out a coin, that is the duplicate of the one Snafu received. He still says nothing, just nods and then steps back.

Cindy steps up to Kahlan, "You showed little fear, it wasn't that you are a lunatic, you just know your limits on the field of battle. Many of those I've tested, have yelled out, You Cheat, or some sense of that line of comments. You accepted that you were sparing with me, and accepted the fate, you did well. Not the best that I've seen, but you did well none the less. Welcome to the Club." She holds out a coin for Kahlan as well.

The Scribe not to be out done now speaks up. "The three of you need to sign the register, and pay your dues, paying in advance would probably be the best Idea. We will remain here, well, at least I'll remain here for the remainder of the day, the others may have places to be."

(Thus ends the Connoisseurs encounter, feel free to ask questions, I may answer them, then again, maybe not.)

Edmund recovers his bag of coins from Almar with a face that could curdle new milk. It is clear the sorcerer is not happy being bilked out of what he thought he won.

"Well" he declares, "Well!"

Pocketing the funds back into his haversack, he shrugs at Thar.

As all of the contestants get a golden coin, Edmund claps his hand to his forehead in exasperation.

"Once again, the fundage seems to flow everywhere but into my own coffers!"

The testing over, the sorcerer trudges back up to his room for a compensatory bath.

Tishe' pats Edmund softly on his forearm; "Money isn't everything, sweetie, it isn't even the greatest thing, her companionable smile takes any sting out of her words. "I am glad that these Connioseurs can see past 'win' and 'lose' and look for something deeper. Something that it seems our three packmates possess. All in all, a satisfactory morning!"

Thar, AC 27, 124 (+11 temp) hps/124 (+11 hps),

Thar take the coin gratefully and nods back at Whisper, whispering with a grin, "Thank you for the honorable combat and testing. You were a worthy foe and I'm not sure I'd want to be on your bad side."

He smiles as the scribe announces that all 3 passed, and he steps forward to register, putting his name and paying his dues (OOC - I assume based on the description of the C of C that it's 1000 gp and we get the benefits for levels 1-5 since we're new members... I'll update my character sheet, debiting 1000 gp and adding the benefit for knowing enemy BABs...)

To Edmund, he shrugs his shoulders and says, "Oh well, we'll have to find some other way to make some honest coin... Thank you for betting on me anyway... Also, I am grateful for your support, as I felt better facing the demon knowing that someone I trusted knew what was going on and would avenge me if I fell..."

Kahlan Palance -- AC 26/17/21 -- CMD 32 -- HP 158/158
Saturday July 9th, 2011 5:36:32 PM

Kahlan responds to Cindy's critique. "Fear cuts deeper than any blade. Thank for your time."

Kahlan pulls out a coin purse full of platinum and offers to pay 6,000gp for the first three ranks. She then puts away the coin she was given by Cindy.

Snafu - AC 30, HP 112/112
Sunday July 10th, 2011 10:05:12 PM

"Thank you for the honor... and for the lesson" Snafu said with a bow. "The journey is still new for me, but in time I hope to further hone my skills with the blade. Though, I'll always keep a healthy dose of trickery in my back pocket."

Snafu also pulled out his coins, and offerred to pay for the first three ranks.

OOC
John's post will address this too but the way I read the organization is you are admitted at the lowest rank and you can only progress with an adventure or a year going by in between ranks. So you would not be able to " buy up" to your level right away, you have to earn it in their eyes.

DM - JC The Connoisseurs after the testing

As things conclude, and some of the new members of the Connoisseurs offer to pay for all the tier levels of the membership the scribe speaks up. "I must inform you that you can only proceed to the next level of membership after an appropriate time has passed. Paying it in advance is acceptable, but you will be informed by a letter to come to the clubs headquarters to receive further training when it's time for you progress." members Highlight to display spoiler: {Club rules are you can only advance 1 time every module or year which ever comes first}
"There is also a monthly dues, which I can accept and give you credit for in advance."

After everything is straightened out, it appears to be an ordinary day about town, The children making noise playing a game of never ending tag. Carpenters building a barn on the edge of town, Stone masons, chiseling away on some stones for a new foundation. Farmers out in their fields, working horses and oxen tilling and planting. Some laborers at the Twin Tankards unloading a wagon of ale and wine, as well as a couple hunters bringing in game to be sold.

It is almost twilight when one of the hunters, who just returned with a buck for his family appears at the Keep, he speaks quietly with Almar and is directed to the group, who are seated, still at the table, having just eaten dinner.

"M-m-m-my name is Derik, I-i-i-i s-saw some tracks out west of t-t-town. I-i-i figured t-t-that I should inform you-u-u of them. They were a man's tracks, but they were almost three times the size of my own foot. It was a good eight miles out not far off the road. I left a small marker along side the road."
The longer he spoke to the group, the more sure of himself he back and he lost the stutter.

Falmar CURRENT AC: 36 HP 106/106 ( Aura of Courage ), (MOXY :Familiar H

Falmar stands and addresses Derik,

" Be welcome, please, you've had a long day and you are obviously shaken by what you have seen. Please take a chair, share this meal, and tell us what it is you fear? "

Falmar will find a plate and serve the huntsman, not accepting any type of refusal on his part to avoid eating,.

Edmund seems to be of the mind that money may not be everything--but that's only because everything that money can buy would be left out of that equation. Nevertheless, he cheers up considerably after his bath, and descends to find a terrified fellow rambling about footprints.

"Ah, am amateur sleuth," Edmund says knowingly. "Another student of the detective trade? I, too, am quite experienced in such matters."

Edmund pulls up a chair for the huntsman at the table which Falmar has laid for him and, putting a friendly hand on his shoulder, proceeds to utter such calming and concilliatory words as the sorcerer is capable of, extending the hand of friendship, the comforts of the keep, and proffering many sage nods of agreement and sympathy. After which Edmund also tries to get information about the situation out of the fellow--albeit gently so as not to bestir him further. (Diplomacy=35)

Tishe' doesn't get involved with crowding the hunter; allowing Falmar and Edmund to expertly make him feel at ease and elicit the most information out of him that they can. She sits in a comfortable chair in the same room and listens, mumbling low for her friends benefit without disturbing the goodman.

"A hunter would know his Grass and not be easily spooked; all the spoor of common and rare beasts would be known. This must be something unusual. A footprint three times a man's size could mean three times a man's height. A giant immediatly comes to mind. And if there is one thread, there is likely to be a whole ball of yarn. I think we need to check with some locals to see if there is any history or stories of giants in Cinnamon Valley."

Tishe' also tries to recall all she knows about what the Cinnamon Protectors have learned about the history of the Valley from thier conversations with the local witches and the Pitchfork Council. She can immediately come up with the story of the Jarl, the Fire Giants who ruled Cinnamon Valley for years before the adventuring group Gold Dragons freed the Valley. (see Woldipedia)

"With a history like that, it is no wonder the poor man is warped tight!"

Snafu - AC 30, HP 112/112  d20+21=37 ;
Tuesday July 12th, 2011 9:37:04 AM

Snafu uncorked a bottle of brandy and approached the hunter, placed four glasses on the table and began to pour.

"A nip of this will take the chill out of your bones" Snafu said as he lifted his glass for a toast. "Derik... Edmund... Falmar... I'd like to make a toast... To small footprints, Liontaur size and less!"

With that Snafu clanged his glass with anyone willing, slammed back his brandy, poured another glass for anyone willing, placed a comforting hand on the hunter's shoulder, and listened to his story attentively. All the while he tried to assure the man that he was safe and among friends.

As they listen to Derek story, Thar's interest is peaked as he hears of large footprints. "Friend, I've got some skill in tracking too and can you tell me more about what you saw? Did it look like he was going slow or fast? How many separate tracks did you see or did it seem like a solo creature?"

To his friends, he says, "I think we should check these out once the sun comes up and see what we can find. If this giant or whatever he is poses no threat to the Valley, then so be it. But if he does bring danger, then it's our duty to see that its nullifed..."
