DM - JC The Hunters Tale

It seems that the Hunter didn't have very much more to tell about what he had seen, it seems that he saw a handful of the tracks, one set a bit smaller than the others, more dainty maybe. More than one, fewer than five he decides as the number of different sets of tracks. The tracks were only in a small area in the woods edge, but there were no tracks leading away from the spot he saw the really big tracks. The hunter willingly drinks one of the shots, but doesn't accept any more. He says his wife would have his head if he were out drinking.
He gives the Group directions and describes the marker he left along the road, so they can find it in the morning.
Tishe' listens, well mostly listens as she goes over the legends and such that she remembers about the Valley. The Fire giants from the past had come down from the high peaks, but it doesn't seem right, they would have knocked down small trees and made a mess of the area, from the sounds of it, whom ever made the tracks wasn't as destructive as Fire or other types of Giants generally are.
The conversation continues on into the night, the hunter excuses himself after a hour or so and heads home to his family.
When it starts to approach the witching hour, Almar mentions, "If you are heading out in the morning, I'd think you might want to get some rest. It is almost midnight, and I'm turning in, I do have duties to attend to in the morning, Sleep well." With that Almar heads off to his room, leaving the party in the general room, still conversing.
With that the discussion seems to come to the end.

"I'm curious about these tracks as they're not like creatures that seem to live around here. However, I'm going to take a nap and build my spells back up. It's been a long day and I'm tired... I have a feeling tomorrow's going to be a long day so let's make sure we're fresh and rested..." With that, he'll say good night to everyone, go to his room, say his nightly prayers and have a nice nap, thinking of a certain young lady...

Edmund is no tracker, nor is he an expert in the ways of the wood, but he smiles confidently all the same.

"Well soon have this sorted, my good man. Go on home to your worthy wife, and thank you for bringing this to our attention."

Once the fellow leaves, Edmund participates in the discussion and agrees with Almar. He, too, proceeds up to his room. "Time for some rest," he says. After changing into his nightclothes, he falls into bed and promptly falls asleep.

As Thar retires to his room he finds a small cake, sitting in the middle of his bed. He knows it is from Helena, but he recalls she never did answer his questions about HOW she was bringing him sweets. Something to ponder as he drifts off to sleep.

After assuring the Hunter that he made the right decision by coming to inform us and not investigating this himself, Falmar agrees with the others that they will need to check it out in the morning.

After everyone heads to their rooms for the night Falmar goes to visit Dondit and they make a brief wide circle of the surrounding area just to be sure nothing is amiss....

As morning arrives, the Heroes gather and have breakfast. The conversation is kept light, but everyone eats their fill. The group has their gear at the ready and some gather up their mounts, others prepare to walk, all in all, it takes about half an hour to underway, but at last the Heroes are moving.
Most of the way to where the Hunter had directed them, the group sees a lone man, walking slowly towards them from the small hill, two dips in the road ahead. Perception check 27+Highlight to display spoiler: { He's bald and looks rather old from this distance, he carries what looks like a wine skin in one hand}
If you decide to wait for him it'll 15 or 20 minutes. If you close on him it'll take 7 or 8 minutes, and you'll meet up with him near the bottom of the small dip he's just starting to walk down into now.

Edmund descends, grumbling all the way. Despite his earnest promises to the late visitor, he is the last person to get ready, and seems reluctant to leave the comfort of his bath and tea pot.

"I doubt it is anything worth investigating," he says several times on the way there. "The fellow probably overreacted in the dark. It's well enough to comfort them, tell them you'll look into things, and then just send them home. Faster, too."

It is becoming clear that Edmund comes from a family of politicians.

The half-elf walks along, occasionally falling back to walk with Thar. "Did you find out about the biscuits?" he asks conspiratorially. "The chocolate ones?"

Edmund spends most of the time with his hat--a pointy hat rather fit for a wizard--pulled so that the brim shades his eyes from the sun, which he clearly does not like. When he does see a fellow approaching, he is so dazzled by the brightness that he cannot make out anything else. (Perception 4, Natural 1)

"Well, there's someone ahead," Edmund says. "Let's see if he has any information to share. The sooner we wrap this up, the sooner we can return to protecting the tower and the villagers."

Tishe' wakes early and wanders the Sargrass Garden for an hour, communing with an entity and a land that most learned in the Wold believe to be destroyed. Yet, she has her powers and her mission, and a lightness in her heart that knows that Sargrass will one day return.

Breakfast is the affair that Tishe' is beginning to expect from Mouse, and compliments the chef at the beginning and end of the meal. "Masterfully done, Mouse."

The Witch packs light, and, once breakfast is over, is impatient to be off. She isn't much for grousing about it, and patiently waits for Edmund and the other late-comers to be ready.

With her wavy brown hair economically tied in a tail, Tishe' mounts her broom and flies above the party as they move towards the area where the Hunter saw the prints.

Travelling on a road as they are over hills, Tishe' thinks there is nothing special about a normal-sized man walking on the road. Edmund has the right idea: maybe he has some further information. Beyond that, Tishe' keeps her eye out on the trees on the sides of the path.

As you approach him he doesn't notice you at first. He has sandals the are tied on with leather strappings that wind up his calves to almost his knees. His trousers were probably white, but now are a tan in color from all the dust and dirt.His belt is a simple leather belt, but the buckle looks to be solid gold.There is a pouch on his hip, also there is a jeweled scabbard for a curved dagger. He wears a silk shirt that has lacing holes on the upper chest area, but no laces. It is so faded it's become a pale purple in color. He has a gray goatee that is about 8 inches in length. In his hands he carries a wine skin, and a walking stick.
When he does take notice of you, "Nor moe tricz w iwl sthed nor moe ij hdrse fwtsnde. h my d gyls"
He says the previous in a demanding voice.

Tishe' barely understands the man's garbled words, but the whole thing feels .... strange. It takes but a thought for her eyes to begin glowing with a bluish-white light as she looks at the man with her Arcane Sight to see any magical effects on the man.

"Be wary, packmates", she tells the others, "he doesn't seem to be in his right mind, for Cinnamon Valley has never had a king. Beware of magic or disease that may be upon him."

Thar, in his usual scouting position, moves to the side as the others speak with the man. He listens to the man's gibberish and tries to identify what he's saying, (Wis 12, SM = 19) but has no idea what the man's saying... However, Snafu and others seem to understand so Thar focuses on the man's weapons and items, subtly casting detect magic, seeing what they're up against... He also tries to determine (peering at the man's eyes, face, complexion, gait, pace of breathing, etc.) if the man is injured in some way, drunk or maybe suffering from some mental malady... (Heal = 26)...

Edmund peers at the man and, despite not understanding a word he says [/b](Sense Motive=22, Know. Nobility=12, INT=15, WIS=14)[/b], replies diplomatically, "Very well, very well. How goes it, my good man? Need you any assistance? Allow us to help you, if you are in need." (Diplomacy=32)

When Snafu whispers, Edmund raises his eyebrow and glances at the man's clothes. "Given the way he is dressed," the half-elf replies in a similar whisper, "he might have been... once. If he was, it was a long time ago, and very far away."

Suddenly, Edmund claps his hand to his forehead. "I think I may have an idea what is going on here," he says. "I don't think this man is drunk--no one could be drunk for as long as he'd have to be with his clothes like this. But it reminds me of something that I could do to someone--I could put upon them a geas and something like this could easily result."

"Of course," he adds, "that's just a guess, given my own capabilities. But look at him. He's been walking for ages, look at his clothes--worn out, but fine, once. Perhaps he is ensorceled? --Or mayhap he is drugged with the beverage he carries? Skippy seems to have a talent for potions. Perhaps this is his doing?"

As some of the party speak to him, (Edmund) he gets this confused look and his head tilts to the left a little. (picture your dog, sometimes when you are talking to it, it cocks it's head to the side) He appears to not really understand what you are saying, but realizes it's something.
Snafu, he has no visible wounds, but what's wrong with him is more than just drunkenness. He seems to be handling his alcohol rather well.
Tishe' even concentrating on the flickering magic, it's not visible long enough to get a fix on. It's almost as if it's being masked, but nothing the man is carrying radiates that much magic, as you discovered the wine skin and the "bag" hitched to his belt only radiate faint conjuration magic.
Thar the dagger on his belt doesn't radiate any magic at all. (make an Appraisal roll)
Ramen the man does not detect as evil, nor does any of his items.

As some of the group looks around and others try to examine the man, he opens the wine skin and lifts it to his mouth.

Edmund stands before the man, trying not to look either bemused or puzzled. Instead, he extends his hand towards the man, and indicates, with a series of gestures, that he is thirsty and would like a drink. (Diplomacy=41)

"It might be a good idea," Edmund says to the others, "to at least get a look at what is in his wineskin."

If the man accepts the gesture, Edmund will take a vial from his haversack and use it to get a sample of the wineskin's contents, before returning the wineskin to the man. Edmund will not drink from the wineskin, and bows profusely to the man upon returning the wineskin.

Falmar rides Dondit up to the crowd surrounding the wandering man. As he dismounts Dondit responds to Edmunds question in exactly the same manner, he turns his head and locks eyes with the Stranger, tongue lolling and dripping in the rich soil of the Valley.

Looking the man over Falmar becomes a bit Wary.

How long has this man gone Walker?....even in this area....with such defenders as it has I wouldn't Walk along obviously flaunting some wealth,,, (appraise chk 26)

Tishe' is disappointed they can't get any better information from the traveller, but he isn't evil and isn't under an enchantment, the best the Protectors could do is leave him alone and continue to look for the footprints.

The witch keeps on her broom and lifts off 40 feet above the road to see if she can see anything while the ones below continue to talk or walk on.

Thar decides to take a very very very long shot, and since he's trained in many languages, tries a different tact and says, "Sir, Are you OK? Can we help you with anything? Can you understand me?" He repeats this in many of his languages (elven, common, goblin, celestial, abyssal, undercommon...)...

If he doesn't have much effect, he asks his friends, "I can cast cure disease on him, or maybe dispel evil to remove a curse? What do you think?"

It takes Edmund quite a few minutes to get a small vial of the man's wine. It looks just like any other summer wine, not cloudy and a nice burgundy color when viewed against the sun.
Thar tries his selection of languages and gets no response from the man other than a frown and wrinkled brow.
He points in the general direction he was headed and the way you came from, having gotten bored with talking with you he again starts to walk away, unless you stop him.

Edmund furrows his brows and slips the vial back into his haversack. He doesn't want to leave the man behind, but also knows that they need to examine what they came to examine.

"Is there anything going on about him?" Edmund insists "You're sure there's no aura, no spells, nothing at all? Something strange is at work here, and I am loathe to leave this man on the road. I tell you, his clothes--whatever their state now--are no mean peasant garb. He has been walking for a long time. Why? I think it is worth asking this question. At the very least, we should ensure that he ends up somewhere relatively safe."

Sighing, Edmund gestures to the man that there is a tavern down the road, by making mug-raising symbols and pointing along the road towards where the village is.

"Hopefully he will go there. It would be good to know where he is," Edmund opines.

Tishe' smiles and laughs. "If we stopped every stranger on the road that was a little odd, we would never get anywhere. The poor man can be well enough on his own. Let's go to where the footprints are.

(ooc: My thoughts on this is the only reason any of us have made such a fuss about this man is because of Player information, not PC information; reasoning that if the DM used an entire post on an unusual man, then there HAS to be something there. It could be that it is just an unusual man. :-)

((OOC: The reason Edmund is making a fuss about this is because the fellow is dressed in a way fit for a noble, but he has clearly been walking for ages, and yet appears to be somewhat cognisant of his origins and distrustful of further 'tricks'. From a player standpoint, there is a masked spell on him which Tishe has seen evidence of but not yet identified. I think those are pretty sound reasons to spend time on him.))

Thar gives up trying to communicate, as there's nothing physically wrong as far as he can tell. For now, he agrees with the idea of following footsteps, and so he starts backtracking them, following them where they lead...

As you decide to let the man continue traveling down the road you, your group that is, came up, he opens the bag on his pouch and pulls out a turkey leg, cooked and still hot, it smells wonderful. He bites into it and begins walking away.
His tracks lead back up the road from the direction he came, and the direction you all were headed. after about an hour, you spot the marker that the hunter described for you. The man's tracks continue coming from ahead of you on the road.
The choice is yours, go to the area about half a mile off the road the hunter described or continue back tracking the strange man?

Falmar, after thinking about it, you decide that gemed dagger is probably worth 5000gp at a minimum.

Edmund blinks in amazement as the man withdraws a hot, cooked turkey leg. He stares at the man, and notices that he also feels quite hungry.

"What the devil is going on with this fellow," Edmund asks no one in particular. "Dressed to the nines, but looks like he has been walking for a twelvemonth. Maybe he was a king, but then he went mad, and wandered off? And if so, why would his people let him escape. And this road goes on and on--yet he has freshly cooked food in his bag? Noticing Edmund's interest in the Walker Falmar softly interjects.

Thar takes out some dried venison and tosses it to Edmund with a smile, "Here's a snack and I got this a few days ago from a deer I hunted. I hope if fills you up for now."

He looks at the sign closely and then says, "I think we should keep tracking the odd, unknown footprints of the giant like creature we originally were looking for. Maybe we'll find out more about the strange man once we discover the source of those prints." He'll keep tracking those prints down the path...

Tishe' flies in the air at the pace of a person walking in armor. She agrees with Falmar's assessment about the strange man; if he has been safe until now, he'll be safe until he gets to WatcHaven.

At the turn off, Thar begins his tracking the woodcutter's footprints, and Tishe' lands to walk behind him. "No use signalling to anything that can see that there is a Witch who is keeping pace with someone on the ground." she smiles.

As the group moves off the roadway, following the hunters tracks, the group soon comes upon the area he tried to describe last night.
The camp is triangular, there are three areas roughly 10 feet by 15 feet. These areas have no tracks or anything else notable, except to be barren of tracks. Among the area in the center, you can see tracks, just like the hunter described. Two or more sets of large humanoid tracks, one of which is slightly smaller than the rest. There had been a fire there, most likely a couple days ago now, especially since the hunter found this yesterday afternoon.
There is one other track coming in from the opposite side of the camp, it looks just like the hunter's tracks you followed in from the road.
It's determined by the group's trackers that whatever left these impressions did not walk to or from the campsite.
After searching for a good half hour, nothing much other than the information already gathered makes itself apparent.

Ramen takes in as much of the campsite as he can. The lack of tracks from the large humanoids coming or going is concerning. The creatures were either droped in and out from the sky or they someone materialized in and dematerialized out of the area.

" I wonder if they there dropped in from the sky or if they were materialized in.... a teleport maybe? Could the strange man we saw a while back have been part of this party?"

Falmar takes Dondit on a spiral course around the camp. Lacking any expertise in tracking he looks for anything suspicious. He relies upon his companions to fill him in on anything he may miss. He sends Moxy aloft to get a wider view of the area. Perception: 28

Giants....Hmm. possibly "temporary" Giants. Not an incredibly difficult pick to master. Enlarging oneself or being enlarged.. of course the opposite could happen...a Giant that was shrunken.. both spinners for someone with the knowledge

Thar scratches his head in frustration as the tracks simply end. "Yes, it seems like we've got another case of someone teleporting or getting in and out without walking. It's odd that they chose to start from this camp and just disappeared..."

OOC DM - I wanted to clarify your post re: the tracks. We found the camp by following the hunter's tracks or the giant's tracks? So if the giants tracks didn't come into or out of the camp, then how did we find them in the first place? Are the only giant tracks actually inside the camp or are they just outside the camp? I'm a little confused...

you followed the hunters tracks in from the road, where he left a marker.
You arrived at the area he tried to describe. three very large areas of flattened growth (10x15 feet). Between those areas are where the tracks are located, there are no "very large" foot prints leading away from or leading to the camp site, they are just located amongst the large flattened patches on the ground.... does that clarify it?

Why, if there were summoned creatures who don't stay long, is there no signs of a fight? Why can we not tell what type of creature they are, knowing that there are few types of summoned creatures?"

"Let us be very careful, look for any item that may have fallen, a thread on a bush even. Look for tracks leaving this area, or for signs of an underground passage."

"Failing any of that, I see no other way for the loom to spin other than for us to return to WatcHaven."

Tishe' tries to go over the ground with her Arcane Sight, and recall all the different kinds of animals, outsiders, aberrations, constructs, undead, humanoids, or other creatures to tell what they are from Thar's discoveries.

She looks at her packmates for any other suggestions. "Without any clues, the only thing we can assume is that some powerful person conjured or called huge beings and then flew or teleported away at least 2 days ago. They could be anywhere in the Wold by now."

After another half hour of searching, tracking, probing and peering over, under and through the area you find nothing of import. It takes the group a few minutes to return to the road. The group turns towards WatcHaven and begins to follow the trail left by the unknown man. After a few minutes everyone please roll a Perception check please.
