The Ring of Malaphaz
Scene 1: Hearz My Voice!

"Ve attunevent haz begun!" [DM Jerry]
Wednesday July 20th, 2011 1:02:15 AM

As the party relaxes over the next few days with training, spell book organizing, repairing armor and weapons, and the normal things that adventurers do to relax, they gather again in a few days in that same tavern to enjoy each other's company and decide what they should do next.

A cute, if you can call a young dwarven woman with blonde hair and a beard braided with rings cute, waitress comes over and brings your latest trays of food and drink.

"Methinks sirs, that you have someone in your debt. An account has been established here on your behalf. You won't be paying for anything for a long, long time."

"She winks at Kyan as she passes things out and brushes close by him as she passes."

The evening is glorious! A bard is playing in the corner instrumental pieces that seem to intermingle with the conversations and emotions playing out through the room.

Then.....

There's always a then, good readers....

A huge arrogant baritone voice speaking with an ancient accent booms out breaking wine glasses and causing such a ruckus that one or two tables are overturned.

"Ve attunevent haz begun!"

Most heads turn in your direction and sure enough, once your ears recover, you realize that the sound did emanate from your vicinity.

The owner, covered in beer, stares in your direction intently trying to discern what has just happened.

Restlin spends several days and nights working diligently. His recent adventures taught him many lessons he hopes to learn form. (ooc: many of those rolls will be dealt w/ over email, Jerry)

He is generally having a good time, feeling accomplished over all he's done and generally pleased with life, when this strange, garish voice fills the room. He spies the owner soaked in a tragic waste of good beer, and is immediately worried the damage will come from their tab.

Determined to establish they are not the cause for the commotion, the young wizard looks around for the source while wracking his brain about what this attunevent (attunement?) might be...

As soon as he hears the voice Bosk begins to look around the establishment. He is sure the deep baritone voice does not belong to one of his comrades. He racks his brain to to determine if he can link the voice to some magical source. For a split second he wonder's if they might have brought a spirit back from the Land of Rest with them, but that thought is immediately dismissed. Surly Gimp and Gargul would have noticed its departure. Instead he tries to think of what the "attunvent" could be, and since the voice is emanating from the group, could it be connected to them or an item they possess.

Beri is sitting at the table, halfway into a fine stout, when the loud baritone rings out. Apparently somebody here likes their ale as much as this rogue. Upon seeing the state of the man, however, Beri changes his mind. A true connoisseur likely wouldn't be wearing such a tasty drink.

Surely that loud voice didn't come from a normal man. Could somebody in Hook City actually be possessed? What am I thinking, we just got done dealing with a possessed man creating zombies!
Beri looks over the beer soaked man, trying to figure out who he is and what is going on.

Excuse me, but you mentioned an attunment? How about I buy you another drink, and you can tell me a little about this attunement that has started.

"Are ye daft man? [DM Jerry]
Wednesday July 20th, 2011 11:33:19 PM

The crowd at The Howling Mug continues to watch and look around, though it seems likely they will lose interest with time. Your obvious confusion seems to satisfy most that you are not the source of the sound.

The beer soaked owner lashes out at Beriothian, "Are ye daft man? Do ye think I'd be covering myself with beer if I was doeeing the talkin" lad? It sounded to mee like it came from yourrr table!"

Beri and the bartender keep the interest high with their conversation, but it also has the effect of moving the focus from the group's table so some extent.

Restlin uses his Knowledge History and the obvious distinctive accent to infer that you have all heard the accent around the Hook City somewhere before.

Zane's chair goes flying as he reacts with the speed that years of training bring. He looks around, searching, but doesn't find the answers.

Restlin uses his Knowledge Local and History with a bit of his Knowledge Linguistics to determine that the accent is that of the Aristocracy of Hook City of old. How they spoke centuries ago. Something you have experienced recently. This concentration does let him know that the ring came from within the area where the group is sitting.

Bosk confirms that the voice came from near the party. He doesn't perceive a motive, but he does think that the voice is excited and anticipating something that will happen soon. Bosk does not discern anything invisible.

Zeoll continues to examine the area using his lens. He confirms that the accent is indeed "Old Hook."

Restlin uses his Knowledge Local and Kyan uses his peception to remember that you heard a storyteller just outside this very tavern the other day, a blind guy the children called Beggare, telling a legend of a talking ring.

Kyan recognizes instantly that it is the ring that the party recently obtained. How he knows this is a mystery even to him, but he unerringly...just knows.

--------------

I couldn't find any information on Zeoll's Magic Lens on his character sheet. Email me Cayzle to inform me about it sir.

I do not know who carries the ring, so I left that vague until the owner "fesses up." :)

Kyan's brows furrow as he remembers the tail of the ancient talking ring and then suddenly knows/remembers? that they have that very ring in their posession. "Beri, it's the ring! It talks... and don't tell me you're posessed again" And then he blinks, a look of confusion crossing over his features, "I have no idea how I know that, but I do. It's the ring"

It seems that Wardd has given me the gift that any jewelery I touch becomes enchanted. Let's see what that trickster has in store for me this time, hopefully I won't be possessed by something with the proper skills to actually take advantage of my body! If you want I'll remove the ring now, but we may want to take the ring somewhere that the voice will cause less... collateral damage.

ooc: I'm fine with taking the ring out here or with finding an emptier location, we don't need to hold up the advancing the story to discuss that.

"A Bad Omen" [DM Jerry]
Friday July 22nd, 2011 1:08:35 AM

Our heroes, good readers, contemplate what to do with this ring on Beri's finger and where to do it. Suspicious, after their recent experiences, they take things slowly and make no hasty decision, which is wise. Experience shows with them as they discuss all the information they have at their disposal so far and what it means.

The initial collective thought is that the ring must be "a bad omen," as Bosk phrases it. Zane uses the phrase, "definitely falls into the category of not good."

Beri now notices that it is slightly warm to the touch.

Seeing that Beri has returned to his table, the tavern owner, heads back into the kitchen, grumbling under his breath, to find a change of clothing.

Several in the tavern are attempting to find ways to listen in on the conversation of the group. Especially a tall, dark red cloaked female at a nearby table. [Perception of 16 to notice her attempting to listen in without being noticed if you wish to try.]

What does it all mean? Stay tuned good readers!

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:22/16/16 HP:57/57  d20+12=17 ;
Friday July 22nd, 2011 10:32:38 AM

As Beri sits back down at the table he leans in and whispers to his companions.
This ring has already caused plenty of damage in here, and it appears we have particularly caught the attention of that woman in red. We should really head back to the tower to figure this out.

Bosk's focus is entirely on the ring at this point, oblivious and unphased by those staring at him. If someone elses' ring had done the same things he would surly have become curious. He quickly goes over his list of spells, but can think of nothing useful. Tonight he would have to make sure to ask Gargul for remove curse, just in case. I can recall nothing of an Attunment, but I would be careful. Wearing the ring could be dangerous, but so could taking it off.

As the group speaks and the cleric gains more information from Restlin he presses him on where he heard the tale and for the details of the story. If Restlin tells him of the blind beggar Beggare, Bosk will insist they head out in search of this man.

Zane reaches up, slides his hood back off his head, turns to the woman and stares at her. (intimidate roll 4)
He may not have the intimidation factor of some of the others, and that shows in the effect he apparently had on her.... which was most likely nothing at all, except to alert her she was being obvious about her attempt to listen in.

Kyan too spots the woman watching them with particular interest. Being watched while about was something that had taken the ranger some getting used to after their minor celebrity status in the city, but this woman was obviously taken a more than idle interest in their conversation.

He glances to the woman and then back to the others, "We should head to the tower.. and perhaps a couple of us should trail behind just in case someone's interest moves them to follow. We can arrange a little meeting, see if they're just following the papers or something else."

"Preparz ze the vay!" [DM Jerry]
Saturday July 23rd, 2011 1:16:15 PM

As various of our heroes stare, look, and intimidate the woman in red, she grins knowing how the game is played, nods and refocuses on her blue wine.

The group leaves The Howling Mug and heads back towards the tower. As the party leaves, many eyes follow, showing various emotions and tells. These range from curiousity to consternation; relief to greed.

Several minutes later, as the group passes through a marketplace, the ring, seemingly oblivious to Zeoll's requests, or perhaps in defiance yells out even louder,

""Ve attunevent iz fvinished! Activashunz incomingz! Preparz ze the vay!"

Bosk's mind races as he tries to sift through all that is going on and plan a course of action. Attunement musst either be referring to Beri and the ring, or the ring and something else. Activation incoming! Prepare the way. Sounds like something is being teleported here and will need plenty of room. It is also unlikely an enemy would announce their presence in such a way. If the voice is of ancient Hook City Aristocracy, perhaps it is someone of some importance.

Everyone, back up. I have feeling someone or perhaps a precession is about to arrive and will be needing some space. Beri, move to the center of the road or a clearing, lets give what ever it is some room. I think we should also sheathe our weapons. If Restlin is correct and the voice is speaking in in the old Hook City Aristocracy, this may be someone friendly and important, perhaps even some distant royalty. Why else would they announce their coming? Besides, drawing weapons and fighting in the city is a bad idea unless we have no other option. Bosk gives a glance to his companions as if to say, "remember the last time we failed to follow city ettitique". Prepare to defend yourself (Hold Action to draw weapons and attack), but lets not be the aggressors or do anything to encourage a fight. Lets try diplomacy first.

The cleric does everything he can to calm his party down and get them to not act rashly, assuming royalty or a distant ruler might be just as likely to appear as an enemy.

God, i hope I am right about this.....

"Vis is your LUCKYY day!" [DM Jerry]
Tuesday July 26th, 2011 1:56:21 PM

The Climber's Marketplace is buffeted by the echoes of the huge shout. How does a ring bellow like that.

Stalls go into emergency closings. Most run. Some, always enjoying pain and spectacle of others, get as close as they dare. A magic mouth goes off from somewhere nearby and that causes another to go off and another.

Our heroes speed up and then slow down going into a defensive formation as they try to determine the way to deal with the ring's brashness and seeming need to cause lots of ruckus.

That said ruckus instantly stops as a loud tell-tale crack is heard and a contingent of about 20 city guards come around the corner in perfect formation closing at a jog.

Then, of course, the ring senses that this is the perfect time to escalate the situation and create more attention for itself.

"HEARZ my voice! You vere chozen! Vis is your LUCKYY day. You NEEED richez to liv in Skyhookz? Of COURZ zhou do! Vant adventurz? Yez zhou DOOO! I ZAM the Ring of Maliphaz! Enter ME and conquerz my challengez! I will REWARDZ you!"

The city guard goes into momentary disarray as they grab for ears and then reforms quickly. They continue forward at their official jogging speed.

Then just perhaps bit softer and to Bosk alone, The Ring of Malaphaz telepathically instructs, "To enter, layz me down onz zomething nize. Touch zme with za stolen chit. Savz a stolenz chit to get out ifz you make it to the endzpoint."

Wednesday July 27th, 2011 3:07:43 AM

Bosk, quickly goes into action. Giving instructions, the party trusts and obeys.

As Beri sets the ring down on the flowers, the ring seems to relax and even turn a bit orange and blue in response.

Restlin begins to lower the Shadow Chit to the ring when.....

The guards close in on the party and the sergeant in charge says, "Ahem. You guys need assistance? We received a report that there was a disturbance. The alarms went off. Takes quite a loud noise to set them off."

He evaluates the party and comes to a conclusion.

"Are you guys a protection group? Are you employed as such?"

Then he spots the ring on the flowers.

"Uh, what's going on here guys. Please explain why you are putting a ring on flowers and feeding it money?"

Concert was great. Worn out from climbing up all the stairs to Red Rocks. Off to bed. Heading home in the morning back to TX. Don't know yet if I'll be going all the way or taking it easy. Either way I'll post unless prevented somehow.

Restlin (Carl) -- AC: 14/12/12 HP:43/43 (Spells)
Wednesday July 27th, 2011 7:09:50 AM

Restlin freezes mid-lowering, slowly looks at Zeoll, and waits for their golden-tounged bard to make the situation go away...

Bosk AC: 22/12/19 HP 61 of 61 Spells
Wednesday July 27th, 2011 8:49:08 AM

Bosk takes out the groups paperwork showing them to be a protection group registered with the city. Pointing to the liontaur he says, Zeoll will be able to explain the situation better than I can. The short version is that the ring caused the noise and has since apparently attuned itself to our group. As for the money, he allows himself to look clearly embarrassed at this point, well I had heard something once that made me hope we could appease the ring and get it to keep quiet. I know it sounds stupid, but it seems to be working.

ooc: Bosk is unsure as to the meaning of a stolen chit. He hopes that this one will work since it was given to the group for a purpose that it wasn't used for or because the ring means it will steal the chit from the group and the others will have to recover it. If neither of these is the case he might have to get Beri to steal a chit from another group member.

Kyan (Jon) AC:19/13/16 HP: 48/48 || Azrael 17 HP, AC: 17/16/11
Wednesday July 27th, 2011 8:54:37 AM

Kyan looks towards the guards and wets his mouth...

and looks to Zeoll expectantly as well, figuring he's been elected as the official party spokestaur.

Zeoll (HP35, AC14)  d20+18=20 ;
Wednesday July 27th, 2011 12:39:26 PM

Zeoll gladly rises to the party's need. "Thank you officerr," he says, after the party shows their paperwork to the officer. [OOC: Who carries around our papers, BTW?]

The liontaur explains the situation, that the magic ring has started talking, and that the easiest way to stop its loud outbursts seemed to be to accede to the item's demands.

Diplomacy 20, not Zeoll's best effort. His nervousness talking to authority figures, no doubt.

Bosk AC: 22/12/19 HP 61 of 61 Spells
Wednesday July 27th, 2011 12:52:31 PM

ooc: Bosk has all the paperwork. I was saving this for later, but I discovered that no one deducted the 1,500gp registration fees from their character sheets and in most cases spent too much money to pay the fee, so I sold some stuff and paid everyone's fee. I figured that you could pay me back after we get more gp.

Zane Stormfront AC 24 HP 50/50
Wednesday July 27th, 2011 3:35:07 PM

Zane thinks to himself, *Yet another custom I must get used to here in the south. At home anyone could be a hero, and it cost them nothing, heck if they did enough good, some were even rewarded for it. In this backwards city I guess every thing is backwards, having to carry papers to be allowed to be a hero or at least one who strives to do some good before he dies. I have very much to learn about this new land and city.*
He lets the others determine who will deal with the guards he also positions himself to be able to touch the chit or at least touch Bosk as he was asked to do before the guards interrupted.

Beltrin (Keith) AC: 15/14/15 HP: 56/56 Spells  d20+2=15 ;
Wednesday July 27th, 2011 8:04:57 PM

Beltrin helps to back up Zeoll's speech to the guards with various bits of arcane knowledge that are relevant to the situation (or at least sound impressive). He tries to keep an eye on the ring and chit as well, anticipating that chaos may quickly ensue.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:22/16/16 HP:57/57
Wednesday July 27th, 2011 10:17:45 PM

Why am putting a ring on the flower? That big guy next to me with the horns told me to put the ring on something nice so it would stop screaming. As for why I chose a flower... well, I liked it so I put a ring on it!

Zeoll (HP35, AC14)
Thursday July 28th, 2011 12:00:02 AM

Zeoll understands that impulse. "If you like it then you gotta put a rring on it," he says sympathetically.

At Your Service [DM Jerry]
Thursday July 28th, 2011 2:15:34 AM

The sergeant smiles and shakes his head side to side. "Why don't you good folk take your ring and your flowers to a safer location to conduct your experimentation. I understand the risks of its very loud voice. We can escort you wherever you want if you wish."

"I am Sergeant Ghet, by the way. We are at your service, protectors."

He nods his head and extends his hand to whoever wants to shake it. As he does so, one of his guards grumbles something under his breath.

Sergeant Ghet, nods again and says, "Excuse me." He then heads unerringly to the one that grumbled, demands the guard's sword and gets it. The guard, embarrassed, stomps off in the direction the guards came from. The others seem to stand a bit taller after he is gone.

Ghet returns, "Sorry about that. That one was given to me to.....ah....improve. Guess I'm not finished with that yet."

"So, how can we help you further?"

The ring thankfully remains silent for the moment.

==========

Person carrying the protection group papers should put that they are carrying them on their character sheet. Either that or add it to your "shared stuff" list that someone should again, have on their sheet. ::grin::

Zeoll (HP35, AC14)
Thursday July 28th, 2011 2:03:56 PM

"Thank you, officerr," says Zeoll. "You arre verry kind. If we move the rring to ourr towerr and trry it therre, I think we will be okay. Maybe we can do it rright outside."

Restlin (Carl) -- AC: 14/12/12 HP:43/43 (Spells)
Thursday July 28th, 2011 5:25:03 PM

Restlin quickly pockets the chit, scoops up the ring, and hands it back to Beri. "Your jewelry, sir," he quips before turning to Zeoll. "Did you have time to set up your roof-top garden? We could always start this there."

Zane Stormfront AC 24 HP 50/50  d20+11=20 ;

The SCGC [DM Jerry]
Thursday July 28th, 2011 10:23:29 PM

Restlin's comment totally breaks the ice with Sergeant Ghet.

He says, "You're putting in a rooftop garden? That's awesome. My grandmother taught me to love the hobby. I'm a member of the Soldier City Gardening Club. Granny has served as president several times. I'd love to show you around the gardening hotspots. We offer a tour every third Thirdsday."

He grins broadly at Zeoll and says, "Sorry sir, your friend tripped my favorite thing in the Wold. I'll dismiss the guard so that they can head back to regional headquarters. I'll come along as your escort to....keep your circular friend out of trouble?"

Soon the party has arrived at the tower. The ring remains silent.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:22/16/16 HP:57/57
Thursday July 28th, 2011 10:31:38 PM

Looks like the ring has behaved itself so far, Bosk shall we try again?

Bosk AC: 22/12/19 HP 61 of 61 Spells
Thursday July 28th, 2011 10:56:00 PM

ooc: Did Restlin just steal my chit? Actually, I have it listed as a group item.

Bosk follows the others to the tower, and while Zeoll shows the guard the garden explains to the others what exactly the ring told him. He then asks if they have any suggestions and will attempt to try again, preferably after the guard has left.

Beltrin (Keith) AC: 15/14/15 HP: 56/56 Spells
Friday July 29th, 2011 1:46:05 AM

Beltrin remains mostly silent while the guards escort the group back to the tower. Once they are there, he listens to Bosk's explanation and agrees with the minotaur's assessment. "Well, that certainly sounds like a good way to try things to me, although I'm getting a bit tired of all this sentient jewelry. Let's see what this one has in store for us."

ooc: Well didn't the ring say the chit needed to be stolen? Maybe Restlin is just making sure of that for us :)

Restlin (Carl) -- AC: 14/12/12 HP:43/43 (Spells)
Friday July 29th, 2011 11:06:07 AM

ooc: Jerry's post had me reaching down to touch the chit to the ring, so I just pocketed it for when we got back to the tower.

Restlin lets Bosk and Zeoll handle the guard. He gives himself a quick once-over to make sure he has all the gear he needs for the upcoming happenings - whatever they may be.

Zeoll (HP35, AC14)
Friday July 29th, 2011 7:38:28 PM

Zeoll does his best to handle the guard. "That's my garrden," he says as he shows the fellow around. He tells him all about his plans for putting plants and maybe a gazebo up here.

Kyan (Jon) AC:19/13/16 HP: 48/48 || Azrael 17 HP, AC: 17/16/11
Friday July 29th, 2011 8:51:43 PM

Kyan follows the group back to the tower, thankful that the guard decided it was best to assist them than hamper them further. Still, he keeps a wary eye on the ring and its holder as they move through the city and into the tower.

A Farewell to Arms [DM Jerry]
Friday July 29th, 2011 11:48:10 PM

Ghet nods and listens closely to everything Zeoll has to say.

"Well I don't want to be a nuisance now that I've delivered you safely home, so I'll take my leave Sir Zeoll. BTW, if you ever want a sponsor to join the SCGC, let me know! We have resources and tend to help each other out and make an event of it when a member renovates their garden. We also do charity work in Labor Town and also in other nearby areas, or at least we did until the Great Migration. Don't be a stranger!"

He waves to the others as Zeoll escorts him out.

--------------

Cayzle, you can list Ghet as a friend and contact on your character sheet.

Otherwise, I'm waiting on you guys. :)

Restlin (Carl) -- AC: 14/12/12 HP:43/43 (Spells)
Sunday July 31st, 2011 3:43:14 PM

"Well, I certainly didn't see that coming. Let's go earn our name, shall we?"

Restlin reproduces the chit and waits for Beri to set the ring down somewhere nice. Once that's done, he'll make sure everyone's good to go, then touch the chit to it...

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:22/16/16 HP:57/57
Sunday July 31st, 2011 11:03:36 PM

Seeing how the ring liked the flower before, Beriothian looks around the rooftop garden and places the ring upon a white and purple orchid that is in full bloom.

Zane Stormfront AC 24 HP 50/50

Zane once again prepares to touch the ring, since that is what they prepared to do before.

Bosk AC: 22/12/19 HP 61 of 61 Spells
Monday August 1st, 2011 1:31:23 PM

Bosk joins the others and gets into position, placing his hand on the chit and watches with anticipation as the magical money touches the ring.

Zeoll (HP35, AC14)
Monday August 1st, 2011 3:02:30 PM

Zeoll stands ready. "Why did I have the idea that the rring would expand and we would jump in?" he asks, grinning, as he waits for something to happen.

Beltrin (Keith) AC: 15/14/15 HP: 56/56 Spells
Monday August 1st, 2011 6:19:33 PM

Beltrin gingerly places his hand on the chit and waits for whatever may happen next, thinking to himself that at least whatever occurs, it won't be quite as intimidating as meeting Gargul in the realm of shadow...

Kyan (Jon) AC:19/13/16 HP: 48/48 || Azrael 17 HP, AC: 17/16/11
Monday August 1st, 2011 9:00:15 PM

The ranger stands in the garden with the others, his bow in his hand and his hand hovering over his quiver, but not yet drawing an arrow... but also not too trusting of the ring.
