Onward -- DM JimC Monday June 20th, 2011 3:03:26 PM
The hermit had waited patiently in his floating cauldron, but all these questions--now he remembered why he chose the life of a hermit and not a diplomat or some other talkative profession. When Keela asked, he almost gave in, but instead he asked her to wait until later--when the real planning would begin.
When it was finally decided the group would return back to Avis, the hermit told them he would meet them there. As he began to speed away, he and his cauldron vanished--leaving the rest of the group by themselves. However, with their new powers, each could sense the hermit moving away at a fast speed in the general direction of their last camp in what seemed a very straight vector.
All about them the forest pressed in on them. It was almost suffocating at certain points in the journey back to camp--the Woods truly did emit this feeling of loathing and disdain and it was palatable, making the hair rise on the backs of necks and every noise a possible attack. With great relief the group finally passed the borders of the woods and was in open country after a few hours and looking back, the Woods seemed a bit darker--but maybe it was just their imagination. Off in the distance Avis could be seen, and the hermit was out of his cauldron looking about the place, then looking up at the sky, "We've got about a half days travel left. So which direction is this Bryn Barabatopolis place?"
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:27/27/21 HP:44/44 Ki:9/9] Monday June 20th, 2011 6:29:09 PM
Garret walked through the woods, brushing aside branches and trying to avoid tripping, but not every time. He mumbles, "I was hoping that darn hermit would have blazed us a trail with his flying cauldron, allowing us easy passage. So much for that idea." He trips over another root and roughly climbs to his feet yet again.
Once back at Avis, Garret looks at the sun and points, "It is that way. Let us head in that direction now, so we can be closer before the sun sets."
Keela Monday June 20th, 2011 7:46:13 PM
Keela is glad to get out of the forest and back to the horses and the rest of the gear. After making sure that Daisy (and the other horses) came to no harm during their absence, Keela saddles her horse and gathers the rest of her things.
Alexi (AC: 25/22, HP:74/74) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) Monday June 20th, 2011 10:03:23 PM
Alexi chuckles as the hermit employs an invisibility spell to navigate through the Crying Woods with his metal caldron.
The trek through the forest wasn't so bad this time around, Alexi knowing it would be the last time for a long, long while at least.
Back at Avis, he, like Keela, verifies that the animals are all right, then dons his armor on.
Mounted on Lobo, he takes the lead in the direction Garrett pointed.
Evred Lazenkova AC 27/13/24, HP 81/82 Monday June 20th, 2011 11:00:24 PM
Evred has a thoroughly unenjoyable time navigating through the Crying Wood. Brambles brush at his clothing and branches whip him in the face. It is obvious that he has pursued a life of science and medicine as opposed to any wholesome outdoor activity. He breathes a sigh of relief as they make it to the Avis, whereupon he stares in wonder at the flying contraption. He boards gingerly, taking his place near the rear and taking stock of his physick supplies. "Perhaps we could take a look around before we initiate contact with them? I can better prepare my spells if I have an idea of what we are getting into."
Never look up with your mouth open -- DM JimC Tuesday June 21st, 2011 4:27:09 AM
Several in the group reconnoitre the area to make sure everything is as they left it and except for a few bird sign, everything is as it should be. The hermit scrawls something in the dirt, but brushes it away after a few moments--his mind always seems to be thinking of the next construct or device he can build.
Suddenly there is the sound of many birds squawking and taking to flight back in the direction of the Crying Woods. A thousand or more, their bodies forming a dark cloud over the treetops. Then they just as suddenly disperse as more than a dozen or so large flying reptiles penetrate the cover of trees and angle steeply into the sky--On their backs, lizardfolk riders. However there is something amiss, with keen eyes it looks like something is falling off of their bodies as they make their way towards the group.
The group soon finds out as the riders and their mounts fly overhead at a fast clip in a Northeasterly direction, which is the heading Bryn Baraz is. As they look up, the area is pelted with a swarm of small snakes, "Oh lawd, SNAKES! Snakes in my cauldron! HELP! HELP!"

Jet attempts to get a really good look at the lizards. Are they from Al Mathir or the lizard race they first encountered. (Perception 26)
Then, he watches as they get closer and wonders at their motives. Are they going to attack? (Sense Motive 26)
Lastly, they drop snakes down upon the cauldron and Jet wonders if they are poisonous (Survival 15)
If Jet can see the snakes are poisonous, he will drink a vial of Antitoxin before he engaes the snakes.
Alexi (AC: 25/22, HP:74/74) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) d20+10=13 ; d20+10=17 ; d6+4=5 ; Tuesday June 21st, 2011 11:46:23 AM
Nothing Alexi knows of Al Mathir indicates flying reptiles or snakes. Their three captives never mentioned anything about it, at least. On the other hand, Al Mathir's version of a warhorse was a large ferocious lizard, so why not have some sort of reptile flying mount? Perhaps reserved for and elite force?
Alexi has his bow out by the time they reach overhead and does not hesitate letting loose two arrows even as the snakes start falling, targetting a flying reptile.

Evred watches the proceedings with consternation on his face. "This is... very confusing." He stands ready in case the snakes should prove a problem.
Jet's Observations -- DM JimC Tuesday June 21st, 2011 1:29:21 PM
1. They are not Al Mathir, they are lizardfolk 2. They are not attacking, they are fleeing for their lives 3. The snakes have been dropping from where they came from to where you're at and beyond and cover this whole area--in the Avis, campsite, not just the cauldron. 4. There is a mixture of constrictor and poisonous snakes.
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:27/27/21 HP:44/44 Ki:9/9] Tuesday June 21st, 2011 1:36:17 PM
Garret watches with amusement at the birds, then the reptiles fly overhead. As the snakes start falling he yells out, "Move! Quickly! Get outside the borders of the snakes!" He starts moving to the northwest, trying to get out of the area of snakes. If the hermit doesn't move, he will go try and help the guy out of his cauldron to get him out of the snake-filled area, "Come quickly! We can empty the cauldron in a moment. We need to get you out of the snakes first!"
Alexi (AC: 25/22, HP:74/74) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) Tuesday June 21st, 2011 3:15:55 PM
OOC: 1. They are not Al Mathir, they are lizardfolk well, Al Mathir ARE lizardfolk. So what you mean is that these are the 'primitive' lizardfolk, right?
DM Jim: Al Mathir are not Lizardfolk, they fall under a different classification.
Zeph Illidian HP 68/69 AC 18/17/12 CMD 21 d20+15=22 ; d20+9=17 d20+9=29 Tuesday June 21st, 2011 4:38:45 PM
Zeph is taken by surprise at the sudden rise of pterodactyls (flying lizards) with lizard-folk riders.
He hops in the cockpit of Avis and shouts, "Get in! We're not getting caught in this swarm." Motioning to Garret and Hermie in particular to take cover in the confines of Avis' canvas shell.
He waits for everyone and anyone who wishes to get on-board and activates the flying craft, gaining altitude quickly and attempting to maneuver Avis to avoid as much of the swarm as possible. (Fly = 22, bleh)
He will fly within earshot of the lizardfolk.
If he gets close enough, he will shout to the fleeing lizardfolk in the language of Al Mathir and in Common, "What chases you from your home in the crying woods!?"
(Zeph will use his knowledge of Nature, 17, and geography, 29, to try to discern what is going on)
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:27/27/21 HP:44/44 Ki:9/9] Tuesday June 21st, 2011 7:08:11 PM
Garret tries to guide Hermie to the flying craft, again saying, "We can come back for the cauldron when it's clear." He will try to shove any snakes out of the craft, showing black mammy Hermie that Avis is clear.
Keela Wednesday June 22nd, 2011 12:17:10 AM
"Oh, not again!" Keela says as once more the very land seems to turn against them. She flings herself into Daisy's saddle and begins riding away from the snakes. "The land around here is more cranky than Aunt Adallen!"
Snakes on an Avis -- DM JimC d6=3 ; d20+1=9 ; d20+1=4 ; d20+1=10 ; Wednesday June 22nd, 2011 3:27:49 AM Garret tries to cajole the hermit to join him on Avis, but he'll have no part of it--first, he'll not leave his cauldron behind; secondly, there's a bunch of snakes in Avis herself! "I hate snakes, yuck!" The hermit yells out as he kicks them here and there to one side. His cauldron turns itself over and dumps the snakes out and they quickly slither away.
Meanwhile, Alexi takes a few potshots at the fleeing pteranodons and their riders, but to no avail as his shots lack any sense of direction.
Seemingly without caution, Zeph jumps in Avis and yells for the rest to join him. While he waits he notices the snakes that have slithered down to his feet just trying to get out but instead got trampled by him and they attempt to bite him in revenge but fail.
With the wind in her hair, Keela takes off on her horse for destinations unknown.
Those snakes that aren't molested or hampered in any way, and that are still alive, slither back in the direction of the Crying Woods ignoring everyone, especially Evred who hasn't moved a hair.
Zeph on the other hand has different ideas and wildly careens Avis against the land, taking out a large swath of grass, before getting her airborne since no one else other than Garret wanted to join him (Garret can jump on if he wishes, without the hermit).
As Avis gains altitude, those aboard can see even from this distance a large mass of snakes--perhaps a million or more, surging through the Woods, but never exceeding it's borders. It kills everything in it's path that's not a tree or shrub as it continues on it's journey through the forest.
Jet Stormway (AC: 16/15 no dex, HP:68/68 ) Wednesday June 22nd, 2011 4:12:04 AM
Jet is not sure what to do with the swarm of snakes that approch. the hermit is gone and those with horses seem to be riding off as well as Avis took to the air.
Jet waits for a snake to approch him and attack and he will do so in kind, but if they are willing to move around him he will not threaten their space, but instead try to look for what might be causing all of this commotion and those that are attempting to flee.
Stinking cowards, afraid of some snakes. Likely one attack wonders. I have to be wary of being swarmed.
Alexi (AC: 25/22, HP:74/74) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) Wednesday June 22nd, 2011 10:06:44 AM
OOC: DM Jim: Al Mathir are not Lizardfolk, they fall under a different classification.
Oh now they tell us. Odd that we've been referring to them as lizardmen for over a year an nary a word from Above that we were wrong. DOH! So they look like lizardmen, act like lizardmen, smell like lizardmen, but are not quite lizardmen. Oh well, at least they aren't ducks either. :)
IC: Alexi looks a little sheepish as the realizes that the flying lizardfolk were not a threat to the party. Good thing his arrows missed. He can always claim he was aiming at falling snakes, heh.
On the other hand, his remaining still to shoot allows him to notice (OOC: no Perception roll necessary since DM told us all ahead of time) that the snakes were not activily attacking anyone, but trying to get back to the woods. Looking in that direction he notices the mass of snakes moving around in it, but fortunetly they don't venture out onto the plains.
"Just stay out of their way and you'll be fine," Alexi shouts advise. He puts his bow away and draws his sword anyway, just in case. However, his experience is that Lobo is better at crushing things than he is at slicing.
OOC: Obviously, if the tide turns and a snake(s) attacks, he returns the favor.
P.S. I'll be outa town the rest of day and most of tomorrow. Hope to get in a post by tomorrow night.
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:27/27/21 HP:44/44 Ki:9/9] Wednesday June 22nd, 2011 3:31:09 PM
When Garret sees the hermit take care of the snakes, he quickly follows Zeph and jumps into Avis before the snake swarm overtakes them. As he and Zeph take to the air, he watches the snakes plowing through the woods. He thinks to the others, "This is quite odd. There are millions of snakes going through the woods, destroying all life they can find. I would guess that this was an attempt on the hermit's life, but so many snakes in such a large area? This can only be quite powerful magic. I'm not sure we know what, exactly, we're up against here."
Evred Lazenkova AC 27/13/24, HP 81/82 Wednesday June 22nd, 2011 4:48:49 PM
OOC: So are they more like serpentfolk rather than lizardfolk?
Evred stares over the edge of the railing, watching in wonder at the enormous mass of snakes. He speaks out loud to no one in particular. "Snake venom is produced in the mandibular glands below the eye and delivered to the victim through channeled fangs. It thins the blood, causing heart failure and disintegration of the nerves, leaving the victim paralyzed and insensate. Symptoms include pain, swelling, tissue necrosis, convulsions, hemorrhaging, and respiratory paralysis. Fascinating things." He squints, perhaps trying to see what species of snake is far below them on the forest floor. "But I have both magics and herbal remedies if one of us should happen to be bitten. Just let me know." The priest returns to organizing his kits and packs.
DM Jim: if there were a Genus classification, then they would be related, but in DnD and Pathfinder they are not. They're similar like Zebra's are to horses, but you would never confuse the two for each other. The simplest way I can think of it is that Mathir look like humanoid dragons, whereas lizardfolk look like humanoid alligators. Mathir also dress nicer, usually :)
Keela Wednesday June 22nd, 2011 8:43:18 PM
Once she sees that the snakes are (mostly) staying in the forest, Keela draws Daisy to a halt.
"I wonder what got them so stirred up?" she says.
I spy with my little eye -- DM JimC Thursday June 23rd, 2011 3:43:11 AM
With Zeph, Garretand Evred on Avis, the rest are left carefully remaining still and wary as the last of the living snakes exit the camp and continue their journey back to the Crying Woods, except for Keela who reins in Daisy some distance from the camp and wonders aloud as to what is the driving force of the snake swarm--no answers come to mind.
In Avis, the passengers spy the lizardriders landing their mounts some distance away to the North, away from the Woods. They seem to be killing off the last of the snakes and tending to their wounded. Several seem in a bad way--possibly due to poisoning.
Jet Stormway (AC: 16/15 no dex, HP:68/68 ) Thursday June 23rd, 2011 4:46:56 AM
Jet waits.
The commander of what would be the foot soldiers gone, up in Avis, Alexi shouts out a warning that seems self evident, but Jet is tired of all the nonsense that he has witnessed in the last month and he hopes the regional tribe that are similar to the Ahote are now friends with the giant eagles that once encroached upon their lands, as he waits for the unexpected.
Indeed, he has many thoughts of the moment and wonders, what his place in the world would be, if not protecting others that are to travel with him, from the likes of vermin and rodents? The next thing you know, the ones that gods want him to call friends will be running from giant rats!
He has lost his mount Bantom. The noble and ferocious steed that made Jet look like a commoner when it come to fighting. That is who he truly missed.! The creature he used to wrestle with when once he could enlarge himself. Once he was as smart as Jet and now, he is gone to live the life of a proud patriarch. A herd to his own and nothing but a willing herd for him to guide.
Jet thinks back to Ma Belle's and the ladies there that longed for his stories from the frontier as well as his manly form and virility.
He wants again those days of women and booze.
Then, he comes back to the present and wonders, if he did something wrong for the gods to drive him to this point? Why is he even supposed to care about any of this, at this point?
He keeps his guard up and waits for everyone, including those that went far and fast away in Avis, to regroup in this area...... or at least for Garret to call together a meeting at some location.
He does not seem upset at the usage of a special item. It seemed an appropriate time, at the moment. But where the heck is the hermit now?
Hermie -- DM JimC Thursday June 23rd, 2011 5:13:39 AM "Ach, I hate those little buggers," quips the hermit as he comes out from hiding from inside his cauldron. The black cauldron rises to allow it's master to egress from it's confines and rolls over to set itself right. "Eh, what's wrong with you Jet? You look forlorn and threadbare. Here, this'll liven you up." The hermit pulls out a wineskin from beneath the folds of his robes and tosses it to Jet. "I calls it Muskrat Juice, it's gotta bite."
It. Smells. Awful.

Zeph Illidian HP 68/69 AC 18/17/12 CMD 21 Thursday June 23rd, 2011 11:04:26 AM
Zeph turns to Evred and asks, "Would you be opposed to helping treat the wounds of these lizardfolk? It would show good will and may result in more information and perhaps assistance against Al Mathir."
He also transmits the idea to everyone on the ground.
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:27/27/21 HP:44/44 Ki:9/9] Thursday June 23rd, 2011 11:57:44 AM
Garret sends a message to the others using their newfound power, "Indeed, there are injured there among the lizard people. We should offer our help in whatever way we can. Let us head over there now."
Alexi (AC: 25/22, HP:74/74) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) Thursday June 23rd, 2011 10:52:20 PM
OOC: well, i guess things can change, but here's the original post from our first encounter, this is what was described on Jan 20, 2010:
{The creatures coming out of the "birds" are some kind of lizardmen. They are scaled, lithe, and sport sharp teeth, claws, and a long tail. They are greenish-yellow, wearing black studded leather armor.
As the lizardmen fall, the archers unleash a volley of arrows. Garth does too. About half of the archers forget the order to shoot at the pilots and instead shoot at the lizardmen falling toward them. }
Given that, it is obvious as to why we've been calling them 'lizardmen'. However, if you've change their features to be more like dragons (ie: 4th ed. D&D dragonborn race) for game play, fine by me.
IC: Now with the snake-threat a non-threat, Alexi observes the lizardmen and watches. He turns to Garrett when he suggests we help them.
"Beware, these lizardfok don't look like the ones we met earlier. Those didn't have those flying reptilians. Remember, we flew over the whole area and even entered their camp and saw nothing like this. As a matter of fact, they looked way too primitive to be able to handle flying mounts as these. So don't go waltzing in there all happy-like flinging healing spells left and right until we've acertained exactly who they are and what the heck they were they doing in the forest."
Evred Lazenkova AC 27/13/24, HP 81/82 Thursday June 23rd, 2011 11:03:15 PM
Evred perks up. "I would be happy to assist! Hopefully I can poke around their reptilian anatomy and physiology while I work on them." He stands and prepares himself for the landing.
The past is the past -- DM JimC Thursday June 23rd, 2011 11:48:20 PM ooc: Alexi, if you're looking for consistency, I'm afraid it's just not going to happen. I wasn't here in the game at that time and things are going to change. So please, go with it. Everything I'm doing from this point forward has very little to do with the past and these are not the droids, err, lizardmen you are looking for or have encountered before.
Keela Friday June 24th, 2011 12:37:02 AM
Keela hesitates. "If they are good folk, I suppose we should help them," she says. "Just, please, be careful."
Jet Stormway (AC: 16/15 no dex, HP:68/68 ) d20+9=23 ; Friday June 24th, 2011 10:42:30 AM
Jet catches the skin and takes a whiff of it with a grimace. He thinks back, has he smelled worse? he can't rememebr, but he also does not rememebr anyone ever offering him a drink. It is he that tends to make the offer.
"What the shadows" he says and takes a long pull on it before tossing it back to him, waiting to travel forward to help those with flying mounts, if they need it.
ooc: I did not add the +5 from the Antitoxin into that roll.
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:27/27/21 HP:44/44 Ki:9/9] Friday June 24th, 2011 11:25:59 AM
"Come, Zeph, let us at least offer our help to these creatures. If they refuse our help, we will move along, but I cannot suggest we just ignore a group in need."
Wowweeeee -- DM Jim d6=6 ; d10=8 ; d10=9 ; Friday June 24th, 2011 1:04:49 PM
If Jet ever wondered what urine with a splash of hotsauce tasted like, know he knows. It was gods awful stuff; bitter, acrid, and a plethora of other adjectives that came to mind, but the bard kept it down. Time seemed to slow, the Wold seemed a bit lighter, or was that Jet himself. A feeling of euphoria swept over him and his teeth and gums went slightly numb. A slow smile crept on his face as he recognized the feeling, but never this quickly--everything was so, warm.
ooc: Jet has +17 temporary hitpoints, and +1 Hero Point for 6 rounds.
Approaching the lizardriders -- DM Jim Friday June 24th, 2011 1:06:31 PM ooc: please let me know how you're going to approach them, i.e. swoop in; land some distance off and walk in; hover overhead? If I don't hear by much later today, I'll just assume you're being cautious and post that way.
Zeph Illidian HP 68/69 AC 18/17/12 CMD 21 Friday June 24th, 2011 1:49:32 PM
Zeph nods and smiles at his passengers.
He will fly to them and land about 40 yards away, hoping that he is showing no signs of hostility.
He will dismount Avis and shout from a distance in the language of Al Mathir and Common, "We are here to help treat the injured and poisoned."
He will then say to Evred, "My skills of healing are almost nil, please allow me to be your assistant."
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:27/27/21 HP:44/44 Ki:9/9] Friday June 24th, 2011 4:57:44 PM
Garret moves out of the craft and says, "I have some basic knowledge of healing, but no magical power. I can attempt to help the less seriously injured."
Evred Lazenkova AC 27/13/24, HP 81/82 Friday June 24th, 2011 5:19:18 PM
Evred lights down on the ground beside Zeph and advances forward slowly. He removes a silver icon from his vest and holds it aloft, showing it to be the holy symbol of Alemi. He communicates through telepathy to his companions. "Please tell them I am a priest of Alemi. I'm not certain of their religious peccadilloes, but they have probably heard of my god."
Death from above -- DM Jim d20+2=19 ; Friday June 24th, 2011 6:02:16 PM
The crew of Avis land gently on the rolling grasses and begin to disembark. The shrill cries of the lizardfolk reaches the group's ears and they think they're saying something to the effect, "They're going to attack us, let's kill them first." But when Zeph speaks to them in Mathir, they visibly calm down, but their bows are still raised. When Evred holds up his holy symbol, the lizard in the lead smiles, or what could be construed as a smile, and motions them forward.
As the group approaches, they see 12 pteranodon mounts and about 24 lizardfolk. These lizardfolk are smaller in comparison to others they have seen, perhaps because they're not adults and instead a band of youths. Of the 24, two look to be dead; three injured and being bandaged up and one in convulsions--probably due to poison. They all wear little more than loincloths and carry quivers on their backs filled with arrows and a bow if needed.
"Welcome holyman of Alemi," says the lead lizardman, "I am Liissst, leader of the Farslayers. If you can help us with our injured, we would be in your debt. Unfortunately we do not have a healer amongst us that is living." Liissst is unusual from the rest in that he has a scar across his chest combined with a Brahmah's Tattoo that makes it look like a huge skull. He steps aside and motions for you to help his injured.
Evred Lazenkova AC 27/13/24, HP 81/82 6d6=24 ; d20=17 ; d20=10 ; d20=15 Friday June 24th, 2011 10:16:52 PM
Evred looks from person to person, quickly assessing the nature and severity of their wounds. "Let us first take care of general trauma." The priest steps into the midst of the wounded lying on the ground and holds the three-ring symbol of Alemi against his chest. He closes his eyes and bows his head. "Ego lux beata Alemi invocare. Fiat lux eius et super nobiles lucent veri ones. Ut cognoscant gloriam eius." A wave of golden light bursts from the holy symbol, knitting the wounds of the lizardfolk together.
24 damage healed.
He looks to Zeph and Garret, "Do you see those two? I need to know if they are still alive. Lick your fingers and hold them in front of their nostrils. Tell me if you feel air moving." Evred then turns to the poisoned lizardfolk and examines him. He places his ear against his chest, then tilts back his eyelids. "He needs immediate remedy. Please stand back." The priest places his palm flat on the lizardman's chest and prays quietly. Suddenly a green glow flares from the wounds of the lizardman. The light travels to Evred's palm and passes into him. He then acts quickly, reaching into his satchel and removing a bundle of herbs. He quickly swallows them and waits to see their effect.
Using Draw Poison. Fortitude save 27 for immediate effect. Heal check 30 to treat poison on myself. Fortitude save 25 for one minute mark, bumped to 29 if my Heal check was successful.
Alexi (AC: 25/22, HP:74/74) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) Friday June 24th, 2011 11:06:23 PM
Alexi can barely contain himself as Jet takes a swig of the hermit's foul drink. "Ei, Big Man, you no eat Anrete's food, de bes' cook in Br'n Baraz, but you drink da drink 'o dis t'ing? Hahahahoooo! To bad Fatine no see how disperat y' be!"
Alexi quickly gets Lobo galloping towards Keela so he doesn't fall from his horse from a fit of laughter! That released a lot of tension and it felt real good.
"Keela, he's either going to be in a good mood or in a bad mood. Don't know which, so be on your guard, ha!"
Alexi peers over towards Avis immediately switching to Protector Mode. "Keela, we haven't met a lizardtype yet we can trust so be prepared for anything." Alexi holds his lance tip high and keeps the reins tight on Lobo, ready to charge at the slightest sign of treachery.
Mez Zaklat -- DM Jim Saturday June 25th, 2011 3:27:01 PM
Hermie decides to get a better vantage point to see what's going on, but in parting to Jet he says with a smile, "Don't drink too much, or you'll pay a price." Hopping into his cauldron he zooms closer to the lizardriders and stops a cautious distance away, "Ah, Kothrul, it's been a long time since I've seen any of them."
Evred, with the help of Alemi, heals most, but not all of the wounds of the injured riders--they are out of danger, but one patient remains that's close to dying and he's gasping for air. The cleric of Alemi had never seen a lizard turn blue, not until today. Wracked with poison, Evred barely manages to draw it out before it killed the lizardrider. Then he heals himself of the poison before he too fell to it's effects. In mathir, the closest kothrul kneels down by Evred's patient, who is slowly becoming lucid and cognizant of his surrounds, and says, "Jaayt, this man saved your life. He drew the poison from you and defeated it, just like the Mez Zaklat." Jaayt nods and looks at Evred through fatigued eyes, "I am in your debt Mez Zaklat."

Evred raises up a finger, "Hold that thought." He takes a few steps over to the lizardman still gasping for air and repeats his prayer, channeling positive energy to heal the wounds.
21 damage healed.
The priest nods in satisfaction. "There, that should do it. As for you, your thanks are much appreciated. I am unfamiliar with these words, "Mez Zaklat." What do they mean?"
Mez Zaklat -- DM Jim Saturday June 25th, 2011 8:36:50 PM "Mez Zaklat? Ah... let me see, how do they say it in the common tongue... mmm, ah yes, I remember. Honey badger!"

As asked, Zeph moves to inspect the health of a nearby lizardman.
He is astounded when Evred draws the poison and cures it within his own body, "Woah" is all that can escape his lips.
Zeph hears Hermie's thought and replies: "These are Kothrul as well? We fought Kothrul of Al Mathir some time ago in a cave. They were considered the lowest form of Lizard in the city, beneath Mathirs and Thrulls. Think they would take part in our mad schemes?"
Zeph will approach Liissst and say in the language of Al Mathir, "Sir Liisst of the Farslayers, I am Zeph of the Culverwood. Might I ask what is the origin of your family and friends here?"
Origins -- DM Jim Sunday June 26th, 2011 10:07:59 AM
Hermie mentally shrugs when Zeph poises the question to him. "Be careful about letting them know I'm with you, I'll need to be introduced carefully if we are to enlist their aid."
"My family? Origins?" replies Liisst quizzically, then understands perhaps the line of questioning. "I have no family other than my band of warriors here. We were once all from Al Mathir, the floating city of the Karkasan and other races that ruled over us with a fierce hand, but we broke away many years ago and had found refuge, a life in the Woods there, until the serpents came. Now we are here. The Woods are no longer safe, not for now." Sizing up Zeph and the others, Liisst asks matter-of-factly, "Why are you here, Zeph of the Culverwoods?"

If it seems so, Zeph will request, "Before answering, may I cast a quick spell? Our reason for being here is somewhat secret and it will help keep our conversation between us." (bluff = 31, blah)
If allowed, Zeph will cast Detect Thoughts. The spell has no visible effect, but the elf's mind opens up to a myriad of thoughts around him. Kind of like when Professor Xavier put on the Cerebro for the first time.
Zeph hopes that his mental strain will be felt by Hermie and perhaps Keela, Zeph will think Help me concentrate if you can. (OOC: can you aid another on concentration checks?? If my allies can hear my thoughts, and I can hear other's thoughts... then... woah)
He will concentrate (26) for as many rounds as it takes to scan every mind of the Kothrul lizardfolk, attempting to find any hint of allegiance to Al Mathir, or thoughts to betray/ kill Zeph and his pink-skinned kronies ... a spy perhaps. To make things quicker in his brain-file shuffling, he will look for key words such as "Report", or "reward"
If it all checks out, then Zeph will not be afraid to reveal the purpose of the Heroes' journey, "Because of your history with Al Mathir, you find yourself in good company. We have been hired to retake Bryn Baraz from the Karkasan."
After he makes this statement, Zeph concentrates again, scanning the inner thoughts of the Kothrul's reaction to this declaration.

The massive human male continued to study the group from behind the cowl of his cloak. He made no threatening movements or friendly gestures. He just watched and waited.
A keen eye would see beyond the shadow and unkept hair that partially covered the man's face. They would see that he was indeed human, though an extremely ugly and dirty one. His hair was frizzy, his face scared, and he had a jaw that was slightly canine-like in the way that it protruded. Worse of all was his teeth that all ended in slight points.
A few moments passed before the man finally spoke. His voice was deep and his words simple. "The warriors speak truth" the man said. "These woods are death."

He helps to bandage those who are less injured, but can only listen in confusion when conversations are held in the lizard tongue. He watches in amazement as Evred takes and heals the poison. He thinks, "Now that's some serious healing going on there."
He waits to hear a reaction to the state goal of the group, for the first time noticing the new human standing and watching the group from a distance.

There's a lot going on, and Keela isn't sure how to react to any of it. She has no healing skills herself, so she keeps her distance from the group going to assist the lizard-kin, although she is very curious about what is going on there. As she strains to make it out, she notices that the wilderness has apparently disgorged another disheveled, half-wild wanderer into their midst.
Discreetly, she casts her Extended Mage Armor. Because you never know.

Not understanding what he's asking for, but letting him proceed, Zeph casts his spell and hears a myriad of thoughts:
Dammit, I hope these humans have some wine or other spirits on them, I'm tired of drinking this berry crap.
I don't think anyone will notice if I sneak away to take a piss.
Mmm...look at the scales on that booty!
After perusing the surface thoughts of those present, Zeph gets the sense that they're who they say they are and not out to kill him or his crew for some Al Mathir allegiance, especially after he states he's taking back Bryn Baraz from the Al Mathir (this is confirmed by Hermie through his mental link). Liisst studies Zephs face to discern the truth, and finds it staring back at him. "What you seek to do is a formidable task, especially with so few. How can you expect to succeed?"

Zeph thinks to Hermie, "You are step three. By the way."

Crossroads...what crossroads? -- DM Jim Tuesday June 28th, 2011 3:00:40 PM
As Keela, Alexi, the very quiet Jet, and the newcomer Koko stand some distance off from Evred, Zeph and Garret, Liisst thinks about the question poised to him. From his mannerisms, Zeph would guess that Liisst is a young adult, no more than 15yrs in age if he was a human male--but he's not completely certain. Looking about the others, they're all of the same age, give or take a year or two. "Our plans are uncertain. We could return to the Woods, but who knows what those serpents are thinking and where they're going. We had little advance notice before they were upon us." Tapping his chin, Liisst thinks of what to say next, then asks delicately--or as delicately as a Kothrul could, "I must talk with the others. I'm sorta the leader here, but we make our decision's together, no one person rules. But I must ask first, before we accept or pass on your offer, what or where is this Bryn Baraz, and what's our...reward, for helping you?"

They don't seem to be openly hostile and might just get along with the dwarves or other folk living there. Does anyone object to offering them a place to live in exchange for their help?"
Garret then notices the new arrival off in the distance. He watches for a reaction, but the person seems to be mostly watching. He says in his mind to the others, "You do see that fellow over there, right?"

Zeph smiles and nods to Liissst, "Bryn Baraz is a mithril mine, approximately 100 miles northwest of here in the plains. Al Mathir took it by force from our Dwarven employers. When we reclaim it, we plan on fortifying the settlement significantly."
Then Zeph thinks about rewards and says, "Well, as yourselves, we also do things democratically. I would need to discuss specific terms with my teammates and our employer, but I can assure you that the reward would be proportional to the risk you would take. For a long-term reward, well, you would have to ask your friends how they feel about working with or possibly living alongside Dwarves. You could possibly negotiate to have jobs as guards and protectors of the settlement, perhaps acting as scouts and mobile eyes. If not that, then money, or perhaps equipment made of Mithril upon success of our mission would be in order?" Zeph says, knowing that the relationship between green-skinned and pink-skinned is often not friendly and a long-term residence may not be acceptable.
Zeph will transmit what he said to Liissst to his teammates, and think Any other ideas or critiques? I don't wanna make all the decisions alone here.
When Garret points out the appearance of Dogtooth, Zeph jumps a little and looks around (perception = 21) and simply states through thought, Oh, wow. Ok then.

"Good" the man said in an impassionate voice, as he stroked the bird's feathers and continued to study the group.
His visage remained stone cold, until he heard talk of employment and a new potential home in Bryn Baraz. "Spring blossoms after even the coldest winter" he muttered aloud as he took a few more steps towards the group.

The Decision -- DM Jim Wednesday June 29th, 2011 2:24:29 PM
Liisst nods as he listens to Zeph's offer then turns to huddle with a few of the other Kothrul to debate the offer. It is at this time that Zeph and some of the others notice that Liisst has no tail--or at least not much of one. It seems to have been chopped off at some point in the past as it is an old scar.
With his detect thoughts still going, Zeph listens in on the conversation for a bit:
"Loot? What kind of loot? Magical?"
"If there is Al Mathir involved, of course there will be magical loot."
"100 miles does that place it in the blighted area?"
"Maybe, dunno, but the blighted area has great updrafts, we'll be flying high."
"Where's there dwarves, there's mountains; where there's mountains, there will be caves and eyries to build."
"So we're agreed? Join them and if they try to screw us, we fly off, right?"
Mutual agreement voiced
Liisst returns from his meeting and says, "We are agreed, we will join you in the retaking of this Bryn Baraz. We will be ready to leave within the hour--we must send our dead friend to meet the wind spirits and there is little wood out here, so the pyre will take some time to build. Agreed?" Evred stands from packing his healing accoutrements and approaches the druid. He sizes him up, looking over his rough clothing and stony demeanor. "You are a big one, aren't you? No doubt this group is in need of all the help it can get, but I doubt my word will carry much weight since I have been with them for only a day or so. So as the lowest-ranking member of this party, with all of the weight that that position implies, I welcome you." The priest bows from the waist. "I am Father Lazenkova, Prelate of Alemi. But since we are far from any chapel of my god, just 'Evred' will do."

Alexi smiles at Keela's comment about the stranger. Out loud he says to her, "I'll fix that. Or We'll fix that if you come with me. You could put on a mean-looking face to back me up in case he's unfriendly."
Alexi trots off to approach the newcomer. Noticing the bird, it reminded him of a friend he had in his Mailed Fist regiment, a ranger with a falcon that was a heck of a scout, and message bearer. His friend dressed a bit smarter than this guy, but these wild lands put a lot of demands on clothes. It never ceases to amaze him how Keela manages to keep herself and clothes so prim and proper...
'Ack!' Alexi's mind had wandered off for a moment.
Reaching the newcomer, lance held high, Alexi greets him, it is a 'Him' isn't it...he? Looks like a 'Him'.
"Greetings Stranger. Did these woods cough you up also? These open grasses are not a good place for a lone person to wander about in. Although the woods are just as bad I suppose. My name is Alexi. Unless you have pressing business elswhere, care to join our pic-nic? Our Pic-Nic Master is a bit busy at the moment but I'm sure he won't mind setting table for another. It seems he's just invited a whole score to the table so what's one more, eh?"
Alexi sits tall on an impressive warhorse, the chain bardin hampering the horse not a bit. Although Alexi himself is not particularly impressive, he wears full plate armor and heavy shiny shield on one arm and sharp pointy lance in the other. Weapons of various sorts adorn his body.
"Like your bird, friend of mine had one much like it," he says with a smile as he raises his helmet visor so the stranger can see his face and smile, and mustach, and beard, and suntan. (and nose hairs and....)

"I thank you both for your kindness, and apologize for my dull manners" the wildman explained. "I have just lived outside of civilization for too long. I have had so few friends. And despite my good looks, people have never taken to me very well."
Koko paused for a moment, but his poorly delivered joke didn't get much of a response, so he continued on even more akwardly.
"Lived in these woods a long time, but today it spit me out and warned me to stay away. The Lady's voice seems so far now, but in her whisper she bades me to continue on... to live... and I would not deny her. And so I accept your offer with a joyous heart. Place me in any position in the pecking order that you wish... I care not, for I know I am in keeping with the Lady."
"And on this mission, know that you have a loyal companion... two in fact, for this hawk seems to have taken to you as well".

Keela also rides over to greet the stranger. She is a human woman, on the tall side, with dark hair and brown eyes. Her clothing is simple but well-made; she wears no armor and carries only a wooden staff, though there is a wand tucked in her belt. She rides competently, but not well, on a large, placid-looking mare.

Gathering materials -- DM Jim Thursday June 30th, 2011 2:32:32 PM
As the group welcomes the stranger, Liisst and his comrades begin gathering tinder and other materials that will aid in the construction of a small pyre to burn their single dead.
In the background, still in his cauldron, the hermit says, So Zeph, when are you going to introduce me?

Zeph chuckles and thinks back, I haven't forgotten, but it seems now would be appropriate.
Zeph walks over to the rest of the group and introduces himself to Koko, "My name is Zeph Illidian, and I believe you will find a pleasant home alongside your new friends."
(Zeph is a 5'6'' elf with tan skin, green eyes, and long black hair tied into a braid. He has a red and black double-helix earring in one ear. He dons black clothing with fine brown leather boots, belt, and gloves. On his back is a ninja-sword-like elven curveblade and composite bow. He has no armor, but his belt contains many pouches, an oaken rod, and a wand.)
Then Zeph addresses the entire group of heroes, "I think it would be prudent to assist Liissst and his warriors in the proper cremation of their fallen comrades. I vote Evred give the sermons."
Then Zeph will help the lizardfolk gather tinder and such. While working, Zeph will say to Liissst, "There is one more companion that I must introduce you to. He is an outcast of Al Mathir, much like yourselves, and yet... different. Please respect him for his magical prowess is necessary for our success."
Then Zeph will think to Hermie, And que the entrance.

"I wonder what next will emerge from the woodwork?" Jet's pun is not lost on his own ears as he smiles and introduces himself to the new human arrival with a firm hand shake. "Jet Stormway here."
Jet is just barely taller then the druid standing 6'6", but clearly, Jet likes to eat and drink more then most as he would top the scales of Ffloy's minions at over 300 pounds. He wears a simple chain shirt with armor spikes. Covering the armor is a tabard, representing all of the gods of The Wold. He is a generic priest, swearing fealty to no single entity, but he calls upon whichever is most appropriate at the time. On his back he carries a very large, ornate Falchion in a very fine and high quality scabbard. From underneath a medium sized helm, long, shaggy, curly hair hangs down to below his shoulders and his face is covered in a very similar fur. His mouth only seen when he smiles as large white teeth, very clean and even, appear when he is partying or fighting.
Jet will go help to deal with the dead. Jet glares at Zeph as he suggests the priest of Alemi preside over a Gargul appropriate ceremony. But after thinking about it, he doesn't really care about lizards right now anyway and anticipates any of them turning on the group sometime in the future, when they feel the time will be right.
Jet pulls out a flask of wine and watches the ceremony.

Alexi pulls back a little to let the others gather around Sharpy, er... 'what was his name again?' He ponders what was meant by The Lady then shruggs it off. There's too much to do right now, he'll just ask later.
Right now the task is to cremate the dead lizarman without cremating the rest of the plains with it. He knudges Lobo back to where the lizardmen are congregated, those that are too injured to collect the grasses and brush.
Mentally he asks Zeph, Zeph, can you instruct those that are not gathering the brush and twigs to clear the grasses in an area large enough so the fire doesn't spread to Bryn Baraz?

Koko nodded in greeting to Zeph and Jet, before adding.
"If we are to be companions in arms, there is something important you must know. I am in the process of learning the art of Shapeshifting... Those of you versed in transmutation might know a thing or two about this... in any case, I can assume the form of all manners of animals, elementals and even plants. One day I hope to assume the form of giants and even dragons."
"There is purpose in me mentioning this" Koko continued. "I want you, your steeds and animal companions to be prepared for the inevitable day when I transform... and, it is better that we test this today than wait to test it in combat."
"Keela, how do you think Daisy would react to having me turn into a Dire Tiger right now?"
...
Once the discussion regarding shapeshifting was complete, Koko turned his attention to helping build the funeral pyre. And, he took every precaution to make sure that the pyre didn't result in a forest fire. When the pyre was ready, Koko whispered a silent prayer and then watched the funeral in a stoic but respectful fashion.

Burn baby burn -- DM Jim Monday July 4th, 2011 10:45:18 PM
As the hermit is introduced, the stress levels of the Kothrul visibly increase--even some weapons are pointed at the hermit, but then something strange happens. Liisst asks, "You, you are Lord Nagyegy are you not? The one who was tried for sedition and sent into exile?" The hermit simply nods to the affirmative; Zeph hears through his Detect Thoughts spell the term, Mad Prince from several of the Kothrul nearest him. Liisst nods, "Then we stand in esteemed company, mi'lord." When Liisst bows in respect, many of the other Kothrul also do so--some don't seem to know who this Mathir noble is from their expressions and remain unbowed.
Time is of the essence, so work quickly turns to building the makeshift pyre for one of their fallen. When talk of forest fire is bantered about, Liisst has the men guide their pteranodons to dig out the earth, forming a shallow pit to put the flammable materiels into. When it is ready, the fallen kothrul is placed in it's center. There is a brief discussion amongst the kothrul with one of their kind in particular--the fallen's mate. She has decided to join her mate in the afterlife, so she goes to lie beside him on the pyre. The hermit quickly thinks to the rest in the group, "Do not intervene in this matter, or you will lose their aid and they will do this some where else without us."
Ringed around the pyre, the pteranodon's beat their wings to fan the flames and they do burn brightly. When the fallen's mate begins to scream in anguish from the fire burning her flesh, the riders and their mounts raise their voices to drown out her pain. Soon it is over and all is consumed and turned to ash. Smoke rises and drifts to the east, but not for long as Liisst instructs the others to turn their mounts around and claw back the freshly dug earth back into the shallow pit, covering the burial spot with the dirt, smothering the flames and returning the ashes back to the Wold.
Liisst speaks to the group, "We are ready, which way shall we go?

"Hahaha! Good point, Jet," Alexi laughs at the joke at his expense. "Perhaps he is smarter that you realize. Perhaps he's already been awakened," at which point Alexi blurts, "DANG! Shoulda added some of his blood to the pot! He really would have liked that!"
Patting Lobo on the strong neck Alexi consols his friend, "Sorry about that 'Ol Buddy. It happened too quick and so much going on at once..."
For the cremation cereony, Alexi stays his distance. That weird unerving feeling proved him right when, through the link, it is clear that these are not only ex-patriate of Al Mathir, but a class of Kothrul. At least one thing good has come out of this and that was the confirmation that this hermit is indeed the exhiled noble. And of course, now they have a name for him other than 'hermit'.
When all his ready, Alexi gets out his map and points, "That way!" and starts moving towards Bryn Baraz.
To the others, he sends a mental message, The eagles were going to scout out the area of Bryn Baraz. It would be nice if Avis could go and search them out, away from the rest of us, and see what they found.
OOC: things might get a bit tricky with this mental link as koko does not have this advantage.
Koko Dogteeth - AC 20/18/18, HP 68/68 Tuesday July 5th, 2011 9:51:10 AM
Koko stood quietly to the side as the pyre burnt low. All the while his mind contemplated this new chapter of his life, with this rag tag band.
To life and death he muttered in silent prayer. And... to hope. And with those words, he splashed some water over his shoulder as an offering.
A few moments later Koko approached Alexi so he could better study the map. "On this journey to Bryn Baraz I would be better suited walking with four legs instead of two. So please, do not let this transformation alarm you."
And with those words Koko's body suddenly transformed from that of a man, to that of a Dire Tiger. He then turned in the direction they needed to go, and waited for the group to depart.

Jet watches the ceremony with a look of scorn on his face. When it is over, he attempts to put it aside when he asks Liiist, The one was dead when you set him alight, why not give the same respect to the mate. Why not just kill her so she did not suffere, when you burned them both? Jet is trying really hard to keep an antagonistic sound out of his voice. On the other hand, he is curious about this lizard religion.
Jet climbs into Avis and lets Garret decide what should be done. He takes a nap until he is needed.

When the ceremony begins, Garret turns his back forcefully and walks away. He thinks, "I may not intervene, but I do not have to approve."
As he gets further away, he communicates to all saying, "Lord Nagyegy, is it? Very nice. And I guess since you've already been found guilty of sedition, you have nothing to lose by returning. Perhaps others of your kind will bow to you as well and this will not need to be an all-out war."
When the pit is buried, Garret nods to Alexi when he points, "Indeed, let us head out and see what the day shall bring!"
He continues, "Yes, let Avis get in the air and seek what you can find. Who will ride in Avis today? I shall, if there is room, I am starting to get used to that method of travel."
Evred Lazenkova AC 27/13/24, HP 81/82 Tuesday July 5th, 2011 12:56:19 PM "I will ride in the Avis. Sadly, my rather cloistered life did little to toughen me to rigorous travel. So if you don't mind, my soft body and I will ride in the skies above." Evred takes his seat in the flying contraption.

Liisst is not sure why Jet is asking what he's asking, Liisst knows he not as intelligent or as wise as others, but he can't figure out why Jet seemingly objected to the fallen's mate wishing to join him. "I'm not sure how to answer," Liisst replies at first, "but it would be wrong to kill one of our own kind. We Kothrul mate for life, it was her decision to stay with him into the afterlife. If she chose not too, she would be alone without him-- a fate worse than death many of us believe." Liisst points to Jet's weapon, "They say amongst your kind, live by the sword, die by the sword. You face danger all the time, even when it's certain death yes? Why? Because of your principles? We have the same principles you and I, I think, we fight and die for what we love, what we live for, yes?"

Up, up and away -- DM Jim Wednesday July 6th, 2011 3:07:30 PM
Liisst looks to the others to see if there are any objections as to Jet trying to ride the open mount, seeing there are none, he motions for him to try. It's unusual, there are two small harnesses, but Jet manages to fill both safely. After a moment of instruction from Liisst and learning the mounts name was Fekete, Jet tugged on the reins and with a sudden surge he was airborne.
The rest of the Kothrul soon followed and called out for Jet to lead the way.
Those on the ground and Avis quickly followed, but at a slower pace. In response to whether a ground and air attack was a good idea, Nagyegy simply replied via the link, "I'm no tactician, so your guess is better than mine."
Days passed as the group got to know each other whilst they traveled. The Kothrul that Evred had saved from poison was his constant companion, calling him the honorific Mez Zeklat whenever he addressed him.
It was later on the third day that Jet spotted giant eagles inbound and signalled for Liisst and his riders to land. When they assembled in a group on land and waited, the giant eagles circled high above. More than likely they didn't recognize the Kothrul, but with their eagle eyes, saw the rest of the company they had once dealt with and came down to meet them again.
It wasn't noticeable at first, but several had minor injuries that were still in the process of healing. Once gathered it was without warning that a shimmering light appeared in their midst. When the light faded, a buxomous female dwarf was standing before you. "What's shakin'! Katarina said with a smile.

(OOC: quote: '...top the scales of Ffloy's minions at over 300 pounds. P.S. using OOC: here for now 'cause I'm outa town and don't have my e-mail addresses with me. :}
IC: When the creature manages to flap himself silly and get airborn, Alexi lets out a low whistle, " 'Dem wings were made for flying!" he exclaims with a chuckle, then points Lobo towards Bryn Baraz and starts moving.
With Nagyegy's reply, Alexi sends through the link, Hey guys, give Neggy a break. He's never been there, does not know the layout, nor the complexity of the mine and caves. Now, you want a tacticians opinion, forget about the mine for now. We know the mine entrance is the bottleneck, the strong point. We throw all our forces at wiping out what's above and push what's left over into the mine. That way none can escape to tell the tale. Then, while the Eagles and Kothrulikes keep guard at the mine gate, we go through the back door and hit them inside from behind. If we are lucky, we'll find scout patrols looking for a way out and wipe them out piecemeal."
Alexi adds to Evred's list before she replies, "And don't forget a barrel of your best ale and some of Ma Belle's best for Jet".
After Katarina replies he replies, "Err... make that TWO chickens and a roster, and a spoon." He finishes off with a wink and a smile at Katarina.

As the giant eagles landed, Garret bowed to them and started to greet them when Katarina suddenly showed up. He spoke quickly, before their allies could act, "Hold, friends, this is a friend of ours. She means you no ill will."
To Katarina he continues, "Popping in the middle of various forces preparing for war? You do like to live dangerously, don't you?"
He takes a deep breath and then describes to Katarina the assembled forces, "We're preparing to attempt to take back the city once again. We have various allies in the form of a powerful witch and various lizard folk who are interested in helping and perhaps others..." He pauses and looks in the direction of the eagles.
"As for what we need, indeed, we can use large numbers of forces to overwhelm the enemy, but I'm betting you're not offering that. Some ale would certainly be nice," Garret says as he nods in Jet's direction, "But I'm not sure that your magical abilities would be best used for that. Perhaps some prepared for celebration in anticipation of our victory would be appropriate, however."
Garret addresses the others and says, "We have not fully determined our plans, but we do seem to be hoping to head underground again to being our assault. Is anyone in great need of supplies, or are there things that you can think of now that would aid us, other than four whole fried chickens? Perhaps something to aid us all in getting through the water that is presumably still there?"

"Ego lux beata Alemi invocare. Fiat lux eius et super nobiles lucent veri ones. Ut cognoscant gloriam eius." A burst of positive energy washes over the eagles, knitting their wounds together. Jet just sighs when she offers potions and wonders if a real army in the field would need to ask for the equipment they need to accomplish a mission. Mining companys and dwarves with their infernal need for profit, only willing to supply the bare minimums to their employees. He hasn't ever seen a business run, but if this is how it is supposed to be done, he is happy being a private contractor.
"The fact is, we all will need those potions of water breathing Katarina and another thing is true, since you have left almost this entire operation to our own devices, in order for us to get the person your own prophesy revealed to us, he wanted a portion of the mine."
Diplomacy: 25
Katarina -- DM Jim Friday July 8th, 2011 3:28:45 PM "WHAT?! A portion of the mine?! What are you talking about?" The usually cheery dwarf had turned sour at the mention of any profit loss.
Alexi (AC: 25/22, HP:74/74) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) d20=2 ; Friday July 8th, 2011 4:05:04 PM
Alexi raises his shoulders and holds his arms out a little bit in that expression of perplexion over what is being asked, "It was just a little bit of the share in the mine", he says in that higher pitched voice of one perplexed at what was being asked. "Good business sense dictated that we offer a small share to him. With one's own property at stake, one is far more inclined to insure success of a venture, eh? Better most of the mine than none? And we want to survive this fiasco to reap the benefits of your re-established operation," Alexi finishes with a grin.
"Some Invisibility potions would be great, Mass Invisibility even better, if you can spare some."
Aid Another for Jet's Diplomacy d20 = 2; what a waste, sigh :{
Jet Stormway (AC: 16/15 no dex, HP:68/68 ) d20+15=34 ; Friday July 8th, 2011 5:43:11 PM
Jet leaves this discussion to go and talk to the eagles. He wants to know about everything that has happened in the last, what is it, four or five days?
"I am sorry for the losses my friends. Please tell me off what happened and how the enemy struck."
Diplomacy with the Giant Eagles: 34
Zeph Illidian HP 68/69 AC 18/17/12 CMD 21 Friday July 8th, 2011 11:47:22 PM
Zeph sighs and eyes Katarina, "This is bigger than profits to be made. Entire families of Dwarves and other settlers risked everything in order to colonize Bryn Baraz. The prophesy that you told us yourself said there is no other way to guarantee success without Nagegy's help. So I offered him two percent."
Zeph nods to the Hermit when he say's his name, introducing him to Katarina.
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:27/27/21 HP:44/44 Ki:9/9] Sunday July 10th, 2011 5:06:28 PM
Garret nods to Zeph and continues, "It is simply not possible any other way. At this point, you have to accept that we need help to accomplish this mission, or the mission will not be completed. We can help you in the best way we know how, or you can find someone else to do your work for you."
Katarina and the Eagles-- DM Jim Sunday July 10th, 2011 10:00:13 PM
Katarina grimaces, "Fine, no more than 2%. Toodles." With that said, the dwarf casts a spell and she's gone--no potions were left behind.
"Well, that was interesting," states the lead eagle. Addressing Jet, the eagle says stoically, "Their balloons circled them from the sky and rained down liquid fire. Whenever we tried to close with them, they fired off their large arrows (ballista). There was nothing we could do as they outnumbered us 20 to 1."
Koko Dogteeth - AC 20/18/18, HP 68/68 Sunday July 10th, 2011 10:09:22 PM
Koko listened to the eagles story. How could anyone do harm to such splendid creatures he thought. But justice will be done. We will see how well they fly once talon meets balloon.
Zeph Illidian HP 68/69 AC 18/17/12 CMD 21 Sunday July 10th, 2011 11:34:28 PM
Zeph is furious at Katarina's abrupt exit and thinks to all his friends in his mental link,
She told us to recruit Nagegy at any cost, or all is lost, according to the prophesy! Now, we risk our necks to secure HER investments, and she leaves us with a 'toodles'? Do we have any motivation to retake Bryn Baraz other than to help the innocent families of settlers? After we succeed, I don't plan on giving it back to her company. I vote we give the township to the hardworking people who wish to colonize it.... what's your thoughts? Jet? Keela? Alexi?
Alexi (AC: 25/22, HP:74/74) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) Monday July 11th, 2011 11:07:41 AM
Alexi replies in thought to all. "This does not seem to be like the Katarina we saw last month. I wonder if something has gone horribly wrong and those Unknown who were bent on stealing the Orb to make Bryn Baraz fail have succeeded in infiltrating the Stonehelm Mining and Exploration Company of New Ellena and this 'Katarina' is a doppleganger."
Keela Monday July 11th, 2011 12:56:37 PM I think it's clear that this land will belong to whoever can hold it, Keela muses into the link. Between al Mathir, and the Ahote, and the Eagles, and the wild animals, and those strange underground creatures, there will always be challenges. And I think people who believe they can hold onto this land from a comfortable study in Floating City will find that they are mistaken. Though none of this helps us in the short term.
To usurp or not to usurp -- DM Jim Monday July 11th, 2011 1:18:51 PM "Lets be careful of what we speak about," Nagegy thinks to the rest, "lest there are other forces at work here. Also, let us also be careful not to become that which we seek to rid this Bryn Baraz of."
The eagles ruffle their feathers and the lead eagle says, "If there is nothing further, we will leave you in peace. But be careful, the way from here on out is fraught with peril. The Al Mathir balloon ships we spotted yesterday, when the slaughter began, left for the North afterwards--so too the fires."
Zeph Illidian HP 68/69 AC 18/17/12 CMD 21 Monday July 11th, 2011 2:28:53 PM
Zeph says to the great Eagle, "What could we offer you to assist us in retaking Bryn Baraz? I can offer an alliance of peace with the good settlers that will replace Al Mathir and the Stonehelm Mining company."
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:27/27/21 HP:44/44 Ki:9/9] d20+5=13 ; Monday July 11th, 2011 5:43:11 PM
As Garret turns to continue speaking with Katarina, she disappears without providing any of the promised aid. He stands there, mouth agape, shocked at the disappearance when the voice of Zeph appears in his head. He is about to share in Zeph's anger when Alexi breaks in with other thoughts. As he ponders, Keela weighs in. Garret thinks for a moment, then says through the link, "Indeed, at this point we need to stop the lizards who have enslaved the people. Once that task is completed -- again -- then whoever wants to hold the land and the city will need to do so. In fact, that still might be some of us. I know Jet would stay -- all we have to do is make sure the inn is running."
"We're now without any aid from Katarina, so we're going to have to prepare for slipping through the water again without her help. Let's not focus on her, despite her habit of appearing and disappearing at will. Let's focus on the task of taking the city now and quickly. Once the city has been taken again, we can consider our options from there and can deal with Katarina, or whoever that was, at that time."
Garret nods when Zeph speaks to the eagles and adds, "Indeed, these creatures are a threat not only to us and those in the city, but to all inhabitants of this area, the eagles included. They will destroy the land to reach their goals and will reduce your hunting grounds to nothing. Great noble eagles, we could certainly use your help in this fight."
OOC: Aid Zeph's diplomacy 13?
Alexi (AC: 25/22, HP:74/74) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) Monday July 11th, 2011 10:05:19 PM
Alexi considers the options and puts his tactical mind to work. It's been a while since he's had a good juicy venison steak but it still works fairly good, even without Jet's 'Chicken-soup for the brain'.
Alexi steps up to the chief eagle and bows deeply. "Your Majesty, we know that you cannot get close to their flying machines lest you die. Bryn Baraz has strong walls, archer towers, and many buildings to hide in and shoot at you so you can't help us there. But you can fly much faster than the their, uh, ballon ships you called them? You can also fly higher than they."
Alexi wants to pat the eagle in a friendly manner but holds back. "My suggestion where you can help us most against those flying things is by taking sharp rocks in your tallons and come from above. They cannot shoot at you from straight overhead if their covers are on and those, er, ballons can't shoot straight up at all."
Alexi looks at the eagle to see if it's getting his drift. "Drop sharp rocks on the ballons from above, coming in from the sun's direction. Dive straight down with sharp rocks," Alexi shows with hand motions the dive bomb maneuver, "dropping your rock on the flying machines as you dive by. Thay can't fire at you if you are direclty under them either. If you it the wagon or ballon, they won't be firing at you anyway. Two eagles should try hitting a flying machine in this manner, so if the first one misses, hopefully the second one will hit."
"Do you undertand the attack?"

Koko Dogteeth - AC 20/18/18, HP 68/68 Monday July 11th, 2011 10:45:10 PM
Koko sat back and considered all that was being said.
I wonder how those balloons would fare in an air elemental whirlwind... he thought to himself.
Evred Lazenkova AC 27/13/24, HP 81/82 Tuesday July 12th, 2011 12:58:05 AM
Evred relays his thoughts through telepathy. "I do not know this woman, but it seems we are agreed that she is sloppy at best, and mortally negligent at worst. If she is unwilling to do anything to protect her investments, then perhaps it is time for them to no longer be her investments. After all, can we really trust the continued safety of the villagers to someone like that?"
Legal eagle -- DM Jim Tuesday July 12th, 2011 3:03:20 AM
The lead eagle cocks his head--maybe he is thinking or confused. "This mine, there is a mountain to it? If so, are there many eyries we could take as our own? Perhaps to send our droppings down below on the dwarfkin?"
Looking to Alexi, "The balloons, they do not fly at the same height, we go for one, the others shoot us."
Alexi (AC: 25/22, HP:74/74) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) Tuesday July 12th, 2011 9:40:09 AM
Alexi thinks to himself, 'Use your brains, birdbrain!'
Alexi responds, "Mighty Wings, send your warriors to drop rocks on the top ones first." With hand motions he shows how they can drop rocks from above without endangering themselves. (OOC: I picture the ballons in WWII B-17 bomber formation, right?) IC: "Their balloons are not very agile and can't possibly dodge all the rocks. When those are falling, hit the next top ones, and so forth. If all the eagles drop sharp rocks from a height to hit one balloon, you'll succeed. Once they see their balloon's crashing to the ground, they'll not send many more."
OOC: I don't know how many eagles there are but what Alexi shows with his hands is if they cluster together out of the balloon's range and cluster bomb the top balloon, the top balloon and any bellow have a good chance to get hit.
Koko Dogteeth - AC 20/18/18, HP 68/68 Tuesday July 12th, 2011 10:37:48 AM
Koko the dire tiger listened to the conversation between Alexi and the eagle, but he was confused by the word 'balloon'. What was this 'balloon' and how did it fly? Did it have wings like a bird, or was magic the force that kept it aloft? How high could it go and how fast could it move?
Koko's lack of understanding of the engineering of such a device made him feel uneasy. Had technology made nature's wonders obsolete?
OOC: I may be wrong, but I'd assume that characters would have virtually no understanding of the engineering behind how a balloon worked. At the very least, I think it would require some serious knowledge rolls.
Jet Stormway (AC: 16/15 no dex, HP:68/68 ) Tuesday July 12th, 2011 11:01:34 AM
Jet spits on the ground and shakes his head when the dwarf leaves. He thinks to those that can hear him, "I hate this job. Is it me, or did she just offer us help and leave us hanging? I say, we take all our new friends and have Hemi....Nagegy teleport us to Plateau City so we can have a face to face with her and the other owners! I sure would like to speak my mind to those ingrates! While we are there, maybe find a tavern or six?"
Alexi (AC: 25/22, HP:74/74) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) Tuesday July 12th, 2011 11:34:49 AM
OOC: Jeff and others; since Alexi has seen a 'balloon', he knows what they look like and how they work, but not until the eagle called it a 'balloon', did Alexi have a name for it other than 'flying thing' or 'floating thing', etc. That's how I've treated Alexi's knowledge of 'technology'. :)
Alexi (AC: 25/22, HP:74/74) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) Tuesday July 12th, 2011 11:36:34 AM
OOC: ask in IC: and Alexi will explain what they know and how they found out about these 'Magnificent Lizards and their Flying Machines'. :)
Nagegy -- DM Jim Tuesday July 12th, 2011 1:15:07 PM "Sorry, teleport is not in my repetoire," the hermit replies. "What kind of deal did you make? I mean, you did agree to do this, yes? If we were to leave, then by this prophecy all those enslaved will die or face a tortuous future, or something like that?"
Zeph Illidian HP 68/69 AC 18/17/12 CMD 21 Tuesday July 12th, 2011 11:06:36 PM
Zeph likes Alexi's idea for the Eagles to aid in the battle.
Thinking to Nagegy: Yes, something like that. The exact agreement was something like payment for helping, but now I don't think we can trust Katarina. It is for the good of the enslaved halflings that we must press onward... perhaps they will occupy the city with us eh?
Zeph then says to everyone, "We have the assistance of Liissst and his warriors. We have the powerful hermit, Nagegy. And if we have the eagles help, we will be victorious. I think releasing the halflings to start a slave revolt would be the capping stone for the assault. Create enough chaos and they will fall.... follow me?"
Zeph then turns to fly Avis towards Bryn Baraz, hoping everyone will follow.
Evred Lazenkova AC 27/13/24, HP 81/82 Wednesday July 13th, 2011 9:28:56 AM "I've got a bad feeling about this." Evred turns and follows Zeph towards the Avis, reluctantly.
Moving right along -- DM Jim Wednesday July 13th, 2011 6:18:45 PM
In a foul mood due to Katarina's attitude towards them, the group takes to the skies--most that is. There are a few still riding horses and they try to keep up the best they can, but it's a losing battle and the group slows down to the speed of the slowest person--except for the eagles. They hadn't lifted off when the group did, their question never answered, but after a brief discussion they decided to join the group--a Wold with those red balloons filling the sky would be no place to live in and so they decided to join the fight.
After two days the group spied their first glimpse of the aftermath of the Ahote massacre. The plains were burning, but it's smoke was yellow due to the wet grasses and it's progress was slow. Thankfully the winds were blowing North, in the same direction the huge storm the group had encountered almost a week ago was heading in, towards Bryn Baraz, so the smoke was in front of them, not coming towards them--which was a blessing in disguise. As they closed the distance to Bryn, the smoke became thicker and from a distances way--about a half days travel, Bryn should have been visible, but it was enshrouded in smoke and there was no sign of any balloons or Al Mathir.
Please give me a plan of how you wish to approach Bryn
Alexi (AC: 25/22, HP:74/74) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) Wednesday July 13th, 2011 9:07:40 PM
OOC: DM, when you say 'glimpse of the aftermath of the Ahote massacre...' you really mean the Green People right? I mean, they are distantly related to the Ahote, but the Ahote are now hidden in a deep valley clear on the other side of the plains. Right? The Green People were the ones we just met and were at odds with the giant Eagles over hunting lands.
IC: Alexi waits for the Eagle Chief to confirm that he understood the strategy but the party started heading out, so Alexi shrugged and led the group onward. 'They'll figure something out I suppose,' he thought.
That night, after a campsite is secured, horses tended to, and meals prepared, Alexi takes Koko and Evred aside and starts explaining what they may expect from Al Mathir.
"Al Mathir has several types of flying things. One is this one that we call Avis. It is basically a wagon with a cloth covering, who's frame is enchanted to levitate. The back has this big whirly thing (OOC: propeller) that is enchanted to give the wagon movement. Someone with a good mental discipline sits in the driver's seat and concentrates on up, down, forward, backward. Thus [i]Avis[/b] moves."
Alexi looks at the two for signs of comprehenstion.
"The other one is this big basket tied to a floating colorful cloth ball, which the eagle called a balloon. It's exact mode of levitation and movement we are not quite sure since we have not captured one yet, but it probably works much like the wagon type."
Alexi pauses for a second then adds, "These balloon things can be very big and carry a very large carriage underneath, large enough to hold a large number of troops, even giant types."
"At the First Battle of Bryn Baraz, a scout force of these wagon types tried to land and take the town but we fought them off. Keela killed a driver of one with magic missiles and the flying wagon crashed, killing the lizardmen troops it carried. The other wagons survived and the lizardmen warriors jumped out of the wagons and floated down onto the walls. They had some kind of wings attached to themselves that allowed them to glide down and then discard when landing."
DM Jim Wednesday July 13th, 2011 9:32:10 PM
ooc: No, I do mean the Ahote... the burned plains extend to the far West across the plains to the NE toward Bryn. The eagles, if you ask them, will explain--they only know the term Green, not Ahote, so they kinda look the same and they followed the red balloons to the Ahote.

He keeps Avis low as to avoid being seen, and he attempts to spot any sign of Al Mathir from the distance (perception = 30). He is surprised when there are no signs.
Zeph thinks to the group, Should we make camp to plan and attack in the morning
Nagegy -- DM Jim Thursday July 14th, 2011 2:59:01 AM
The hermit waves his hand in front of his face, "All this smoke, makes it hard to breath for us Mathir. I suspect that's why they are not out amongst the clouds of it. More than likely they are hold up somewhere within."

Jet simmers as he thinks of the people killed, some he has drank with and thinks more on the shaman that got away. This lizard race is beginning to drive Jet to think of evil deeds, such as hearing the screams from the nobles who gave the orders to destroy his friends. Jet thinks about slowly carving away, small pieces of flesh from very parts of it's body and pouring whiskey on the wound. Gouging out their eyes so that they stare at their feet as they dangle from their skull. Burning with a torch their tail, slowly as they suffer through the half elfs wrath.

Once planning was discussed Koko offerred to help with scouting. "I can take the form of some harmless animal and have a look around, if need be."

"Is there any way of telling whether the land is....upset? Angry? Or anything like that?" Hastily, she explains, "It's just that, while we were on our way to find the hermit, the land attacked us one morning, and with all this burning and whatnot....well..."

"Jet, take heart. Muata and his people were not the ones attacked. See here on the map? The ones attacked were here, south of Bryn Baraz, where we just passed through. Remember where Muata is hiding? Way up here, far to the north of Bryn Baraz, near the Blasted Lands. This fire would have to cross many miles of dust and cracked earth to reach their hidden valley. I believe you will still be able to drink with them again once we rid these lands of this Al Mathir plague."

OOC: DM, i think we are still discussing our reconnaissance. Please put us back to Point A: --about a half days travel
We're not going to even try to get close to the walls if we decide to take the back entrance through the underwater passage. Besides, if the smoke is that thick, Lisst and his friends will be left behind.
If this process seems slow, bear with us, we'll get moving soon.
Back, a half-days travel to Bryn Baraz...
IC: Alexi studies the burned terrain in front of him and towards the obscured entrance to the canyon. His instincts tell him that for that smoke still to be so thick and not dissipate, there must still be fires going and as hot as it is in the heat of the sun, he does not want to venture into the heat of smoke and fire as well.
Knowledge Open Plains, or Knowledge Grass Fire to guesstimate the strength of the wind (if any) and when did the fire pass through: d20+1= 7. Well, he at least sticks a wet finger in the air to see which way the wind is blowing and how strong. :)
"Friends, it is not wise to venture into that mess withought circling around to see if the surrounding area is clear. I don't want to enter and then find out an army is camped just over the hill."
Alexi turns to Liisst. "Brave Flyier, this smoke will prevent you from getting close to the town. However, we also need to see what lies in the outlying land. There is also a small pond here," and Alexi shows the location on the map. "Carefully, see how close you can get to it. If it is guarded, don't engage. If it is not guarded, have a good drink for us, then return. We need to know, if possible, if any guards are on the ridges here... here... and here," he points to the ridge tops surrounding the valley.

Liisst agrees to go ahead and scout, just by himself. Hours pass as he's gone and near nightfall he returns. He says the pond is clear and so too the town, but visibility is very poor but the smoke is lessening and all he could see were some torches burning at the walls and the places Alexi pointed to on the map, but no people.

Then he taps himself with his Wand of Mage Armor, summoning black translucent floating plates on vital parts of his body and says, "They are all held up inside, trying to avoid the smoke. If we can enter the mines through the underwater passage and kill Al Mathir within the mine without those in the camp noticing... Then we can make a plan to assault the main building shortly after, and the Halfling slaves can chose to either flee or join the fight. Liissst and Eagles, please stand by to intercept any incoming reinforcements or snag any lizards that may try to flee the mines?"
THen, the other plan: "Or should we just assault the main building now?"
Nagegy-- DM Jim Tuesday July 19th, 2011 2:20:02 AM "Invisibility? Hmm.... well, I could tinker a mass reduce person spell into making us invisible instead, sound good?"

"I don't suppose you can turn into a Smoke Mephit eh?" Alexi jokes with Koko. "An owl might be suspicious during the day, but a crow would make sense. They eat dead stuff and this would be a good place to look for charred dead things. We need to know what lies behind the walls other than a few torches."
To the others Alexi turns and says, "Getting past the walls is not the hard part, it's the inner walls, then the entrance to the mine itself. A great door bars the entrance. Even if the back entrance under water is guarded, there's no doors. Or at least there were none a week or two ago. That's were our invisible scout will come in the handiest. One that can see in the dark as good as in the light, oh, and can swim a bit."
"Koko, do your bird scouting of the walls and inner couryards. See what damage to the buildings, temple, watch towers, (there were a couple of archer towers build in the middle of the compound), the fire has done, and if any guard the entrance to the mine. Feel free to perch yourself above the mine entrance and watch and listen for a while if you need to."

Camp -- DM Jim Wednesday July 20th, 2011 3:31:36 PM
The ashes swirl lazily on the burnt remains of the plains where the group plan their means of ingress and attack on Bryn Baraz. Far away in the mines the slaves toil away, their hard labor unending, praying to either die or be rescued my some unknown source.
"Great idea Tolly, yeah, let's leave Mudtown and strike out on our own--strike out on our own he says. What was I thinking?"
Tolly eyed Edward between swings of the pick, "Well you agreed, didn't ya? I mean, there wasn't nothing holding us back there in Mudtown, nothin'!"
Edward blurted out, "There was food, security, shelter better than this!"
"Security?" Tolly responded incredulously, "Do you not remember the brain-eater that was stalking about town? How every night was probably our last? Security, pfft."
With the crack of a whip the duo's conversation came to an end and they resumed their back-breaking labor of mining out the mithral ore.

"Let us wait and see what Koko finds. I suggest we wait here until dark, then move to the pool at the back side and make our entrance. If we leave at dusk, we should get there by midnight."

OOC: Plan A is: Wait until Koko returns from scouting the cliffs and inside the walls. The eagles and Liiiiiissssssttttt need to know about any activity there. Then we head around the hills to the back side where the pool is hoping the smoke will conceal our movements.
At the pool two will use Invisibility, Zeph and Garrett most probable ones to NOT dive into the pool, but slowly enter the water, and head to the pool inside the mountain and scout out that cavern and passageways.
IC: While the party waits for Koko's return, Alexi sketches out what he remembers of the pool, the water tunnel going inside, and the cavern where the pool exits into. "In the large cavern with the pool we fought off some giant bats, so if you stay low to the ground, you should be ok, or just dive back into the water."

After Alexi shows Zeph and Garrett the sketch of the water tunnel and cavern, he describes what they know of the forces, according to their Thrull captives.
"It is the standard mining workforce with a standard guard. That is, 20 slaves with 5 kothrul overseers and a kothrul master make up the work detail. The guard detail consists of 24 thrul with 4 hounds and 1 officer of rank, as well as 2 heavy mathras cavalry and 1 kothrul pilot with a small carrier. Of course, we have defeated 3 of the 4 hounds, 9 of the 24 thrul, the pilot kothrul, and the current officer.
We should expect these forces to be brought up to their max again, if not more."

Scouting -- DM Jim Monday July 25th, 2011 6:11:27 PM
With Koko in the lead the group sets out to do some scouting of Bryn and the pool most specifically. Hours pass as they travel, the horses falling far behind, and when Koko arrives it is still under cover of darkness and smoke. In his current state, Koko is finding it hard to breath with all the smoke in the area and becomes fatigued quite easily during his scouting mission. What the druid finds at each of the lit torches is a single Kothrul spearman. Covering each of their faces are wetted clothes to help with the smoke that has severely hampered their visibility.
At the pool it looks deserted, not a sign of anyone there. DC20 Perception roll to Highlight to display spoiler: {There is something in the pool of large size. What it is, is undiscernable, but most likely reptilian in origin}
The scouting parties return to find Alexi having a hard time of it with the horses. They do not want to progress any further, and it is only his handling skills that are moving them forward in the ash and smoke that cover the plains.
There is approximately one hour before dawn. By land Bryn is still about eight hours away. By air it is two hours away. Hopes of an attack under the cover of darkness will not happen today.
Alexi (AC: 25/22, HP:74/74) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) Monday July 25th, 2011 9:17:06 PM
OOC: ok, looks like Alexi and anyone else who wants to will take the horses with Jet keeping watch from above. The others will go in Avis and go ahead and scout out the pool, water tunnel, and inside pool.
BTW: it is not a heated pool so don't get any funny ideas about frolicking!
Then meet up with the horses at whatever point the DM calculates using his physics formulas on speed, time, distance, etc.
Plan B: whatever happens that prevents Plan A from working as planned. Remember, our plans have NEVER worked as planned. :}

IC: Alexi takes in the scouting news and thinks about it. "Good job every one. Good thing we did the scouting. Now we plan our next move."
Alexi suggest resting for now. "The horses have just about had it with this smoke. Hunckering down during the day and keeping hidden may give time for the smoke to dissipate a little. This would also give the spellcasters time to re-evaluate what spells to have ready. Provided the smoke lifts enough, we may be able to leave by mid-afternoon, putting us there in the early evening."

Resting -- DM Jim d100=67 ; Wednesday July 27th, 2011 10:43:29 AM
Deciding to wait till later in the day to make a night assault, the group hides in Keela's rope trick until the appointed time--during which, the hungry eagles and pteranodons leave for a bit to go hunting in the fading light after resting for a few hours. When the time approaches to leave, they have returned, but they have found little to nourish themselves and eye the horses hungrily.
Evred Lazenkova AC 27/13/24, HP 81/82 Wednesday July 27th, 2011 1:34:27 PM
Evred nods. "I do not mind if they have a horse or two. I anticipate ve vill replenish our mounts from any the lizardfolk may be using in Bryn Baraz."

Koko saw the state of the horses and sensed their hunger, and he decided to do something about it.
"Umshik moknun da" he uttered as he gestured to some berries in his hand. He then took the berries and urged the mounts to eat.
"This will ease the growls in your stomach" he bade.
DM Sanity report:

Resting -- DM Jim Wednesday July 27th, 2011 6:10:17 PM
One of the Kothrul riders approaches Evred and asks, "Mez Zaklat, it would be a good thing if the mounts were to eat, even the eagles, since we have not eaten in sometime and have been flying. Which horses may we take and butcher some distance from here--so as to not frighten the remaining horses."
Keela Wednesday July 27th, 2011 6:20:26 PM
"The horses don't belong to you!" Keela snaps at Evred. "They're not yours to give away."
The Kothrul seem to have other ideas, though, so Keela rushes over to catch hold of Daisy's bridle.
"Nobody is eating Daisy!" she says.

Alexi eyes Evered with eyes like daggers. "Offer your mount then!"
When the Kothrul comes forward Alexi is ready to offer the kothrul's body for food. "I'll make a deal with you, you kill YOUR mounts to feed to your mounts, and when they are all gone, then we can kill one of ours! If you don't like that, then go get yourself one of those lone guards upon the ridges. It would serve two puposes, cause a distraction and eliminate a guard or two that we'll have to deal with later."
"The nerve...", he mumbles as he goes to stand guard over the horses along with Keela.
Liisst -- DM Jim Wednesday July 27th, 2011 11:13:42 PM
Shrugging his shoulders, Liisst simply replies, "Okay." Then turns to confer with his other riders about making a wider circle to the South to look for game since the current group that has asked for their help thinks that they should be cannibals--eating pteranodon or other kothrul, which simply won't be done. Liisst turns back to the group and calls out, "We go in search of food, we will return when we can or by tomorrow morning or the next." The eagles are in agreement with the kothrul riders and prepare to leave also.
Unless stopped, they will be gone for an unknown amount of time.

Garret Goodbarrel [AC:27/27/21 HP:44/44 Ki:9/9] Thursday July 28th, 2011 8:59:21 PM
Garret suddenly speaks up, speaking to Liisst and the eagles, "Please, a moment. I know that you are hungry. I know that you are tired as well. Our tempers are getting short -- but this is exactly how the enemy will win. We need to stay united against this enemy of ours. If they succeed in splitting us up, they will be sure to defeat us. We are all hungry and tired, but in the heat of battle, I am sure that we will forget those feelings as we fight for our way of life and our very lives. Stay with us a bit longer, and fight with us. Now is the time to move forward and battle our enemies together!"
"Let us move forward. Let us head towards the pool and the cavern now and prepare our assault. Stay hidden as best we can, but get closer now. Hopefully we can still catch them in the haze and smoke where they cannot see us. Zeph, let's head towards the back entrance and see if we can still get in. Everyone else move forward. Jet, can you oversee setting up a temporary forward base of sorts? Evred, if you can prepare what you need to deal with the injured, that will be helpful, but I am sure we will need you in the main attack as well. Keela, your Daisy is safe, do you need more time to study and prepare spells for us? Alexi, while everyone is moving up, can you assist Jet with the forward base and keep an eye out for the enemy? Koko, while they're doing that, can you take another quick look to see that things aren't changing up there? Nagegy, please speak with Jet to determine what sorts of magic you can bring to bear if this turns into a big, open battle, if you can. Quickly now!"

OOC: here ya go, if any one can use it:
Create Food and Water
School conjuration (creation); Level cleric 3
Casting Time 10 minutes
Components V, S
Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Effect food and water to sustain three humans or one horse/level for 24 hours
Duration 24 hours; see text
Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance no
The food that this spell creates is simple fare of your choice--highly nourishing, if rather bland. Food so created decays and becomes inedible after 24 hours, although it can be kept fresh for another 24 hours by casting a purify food and water spell on it. The water created by this spell is just like clean rain water, and it doesn't go bad as the food does.
Alexi (AC: 25/22, HP:74/74) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) Thursday July 28th, 2011 10:57:08 PM
"ONE, My horse, Lobo, is NOT a beast of burden. He's a WARHORSE, for crying out loud!" Alexi shouts back exasperated. "A wizard wouldn't give his familiar over to them, would he? No. Nor would give my best friend, who's saved my life numerous times."
"I'm sorry, Evred, for snapping back. We have been out here in these dry plains a long time and we are used to it. However, while in the Mailed Fist, our battalions had priests that provided food when we were out in the field or cut off from our supply train. Perhaps you are familiar with that, perhaps not, but it would be a good idea to ask Alemni for guidance in that area."
Alexi responds to Garret, "I'll stay with the horses, they may need an expert hand to get them to the pool. you go with Jet and to set up the advance camp. Nagegy can go and help as well. Koko can find us after his scouting and join the horses. Keela can choose to stay with Daisy or go with the advance party."
Alexi goes over to the chief eagle and describes to the chief eagle an area of good hunting far to the west, where the Ahote had found plenty of game some months ago. "There may be some there if the fire didn't make it that way."

Koko Dogteeth - AC 20/18/18, HP 68/68 Friday July 29th, 2011 10:02:19 AM
Koko wasn't the least bit happy about the discussion around slaughtering horses.
"Clearly we all need to eat" Koko said. "But let us not jump too quickly to conclusions that a horse needs to be slaughtered. Tomorrow I will prepare five spells that will produce berries that should feed most of us. So fear not... and slaughter not."
Liisst and eagles -- DM Jim Friday July 29th, 2011 2:10:16 PM
After a brief discussion, Liisst, his riders and the eagles take to the skies to go hunting again. They say they will meet you at the pool if possible.
With Jet's mount gone, that only leaves Avis as a semi-fast means of getting there. The sun is already low in the horizon and by horse it will be several hours past midnight when the horses arrive. Will Jet take Avis alone and will he enter the pool by himself, even after it's been reported that there is a creature swimming in the pool?

Alexi (AC: 25/22, HP:74/74) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) Friday July 29th, 2011 9:56:32 PM
OOC: the 'back door' and the pool are the same, unless yoou are referring to the exit the two halfling slaves used, but we don't know where that is.
Alexi (AC: 25/22, HP:74/74) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) Friday July 29th, 2011 10:37:19 PM
OOC: don't know why Jet would take Avis alone. Alexi already suggested Garret and Jet scout out the pool. Now that we know something is there, (no, i didn't read the spoiler, DM burped it up for us), alternate plans can be made. We can forgo any scouting of Bryn again and have Evred go with Jet, Garret, and Zeph.
Keela, Nagegy, Koko, and Alexi can bring the horses.
hows that sound?
Evred Lazenkova AC 27/13/24, HP 81/82 Friday July 29th, 2011 11:49:18 PM
Evred looks around, not quite sure what to do and waiting for a sign from the others.
Planning -- DM Jim Saturday July 30th, 2011 5:26:02 PM
Ash swirls about the plains as the group decides on their next course of actions.
"Do you remember lingerie, Tolly?"
"Wha? I never wore any lingerie, you're going daft, Edward."
"Not you, stupid. Womens, womens wearing lingerie? All we have about here is a few halflings in skorts and them damn lizards in loincloths... it's right unnerving."
"Edward, I've said this before: You're an idiot. Go to sleep, long day ahead of us tomorrow."
The smoke wasn't so bad inside the barracks where they were housed, but it was still noticeable. In a day or two it would be gone, but the slaves would still be here--mining until they died.
Keela Monday August 1st, 2011 12:41:23 AM
"Yes, I'm happy to go with Alexi. And the horses," Keela says.
Jet Stormway (AC: 16/15 no dex, HP:68/68 ) Monday August 1st, 2011 11:36:06 AM
ooc: I'm not exactly sure what it is garret wanted him to do, go into the pool or just fly around in Avis? rem, ember, if I am the pilot of Avis I loose all my divine and arcane spells.
"Garret, would you mind stop eating for five minutes, sit your butt down and tell us what you want each of us to do, or i will just start coming up for things to do with my time, something productive."
Zeph Illidian HP 68/69 AC 22/21t/16ff CMD 21 (Mage Armor) Monday August 1st, 2011 12:49:20 PM
Zeph says, "Howabout we all just go to the pool in Avis - Koko can follow in one of his various forms. Then we begin the assault tonight via pool entrance and serpent-slaying?"
Zeph then thinks, Don't split the party?
Evred Lazenkova AC 27/13/24, HP 81/82 Monday August 1st, 2011 4:59:01 PM
Evred ponders for a moment, then nods. Don't split the party.
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:27/27/21 HP:44/44 Ki:9/9] Monday August 1st, 2011 5:03:55 PM
Garret looks at Jet and tries to speak with his mouth quite full of some sort of roots and berries, "Whrff, mgurbb..."
He looks away and chews some more, takes a drink from a water skin, then turns back to Jet, "I mean, we need to get to that pool while we can. Let's go. Keela, Nagegy, Koko, and Alexi will bring the horses along as quickly as they can. The rest of us can move up in Avis and see what there is to see in the pool."
Alexi (AC: 25/22, HP:74/74) Lobo (AC: 20, HP:36/36) Monday August 1st, 2011 9:53:09 PM
"A Plan!" Alexi blurts. "We now have a plan! Of course you kno what that means. It is bound to fail. We've never had TWO plans work, much less one right after the other!" Alexi laughs a good hearty laugh.
At that he goes to prepare the lead ropes for the riderless horses and attaches them to the ridden horses, one to each.
If Koko decides to take avian form as a scout for the riders, Alexi takes on the extra horses.
"Let's go," he says when ready, taking the lead.
Koko Dogteeth - AC 20/18/18, HP 68/68 Monday August 1st, 2011 10:56:56 PM
Koko decides to take an avian form and fly along with the advanced party.
"Since I've already scouted the area, I think it makes sense for me to go with you."
Keela Tuesday August 2nd, 2011 1:01:54 AM
Keela helps get the horses ready, and saddles Daisy for the ride.
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:27/27/21 HP:44/44 Ki:9/9] Tuesday August 2nd, 2011 2:29:49 PM
Garret says, "Good idea, Koko, I keep forgetting that you can do such things!"
The Pool -- DM Jim d6=1 ; Tuesday August 2nd, 2011 3:10:55 PM
Through ash driven winds and darknesss of night, the group travels to the pool that will be their first staging area of the attack. Those in Avis and Nagegy flying along in his cauldron arrive at the site first and find it abandoned. There is nary a sign of any presence and they wait hours for the horse-bound members of their group to finally arrive. Once there they gather together to form the plan of attack.
