Cleaning up The Mess Tuesday August 2nd, 2011 7:59:58 AM
The guards, seeing that the groups are standing down and cooperating, are more at ease.
Iron Shot waves a healer over to the dying thug.
Harvest is barely holding on to consciousness, but she manages to notice the urgency of the situation and pass her perception on to the others.
Brom is flashing back to a previous time when a similar thing happened. When the rage takes over, he doesn't always know his own strength, and now, as the consequences wash over him, the strength drains out of him.
Lemick put his hands on the downed thug to stabilize him. The blood trickle from the thug's nose quickly stops, but he still looks mostly dead. A few moments later, and they wouldn't have been able to do anything but go through his pockets and look for loose change.
Peza asks about Harvest, then gives her attention to the guards, who seem to make her a little nervous.
Crag moves to go stabilize Brom's victim, but Lemick got there first, so he straps on his shield and shows the guards his open hands.
Barratore, hurt and bone weary, collapsed where he was.
Gerox focuses on appeasing the guards, and seems to be successful in talking them around, and painting himself and his friends as the good guys.
The guards force the thugs to turn out their pockets. They collect 300 gold pieces in total from them. Apparently, they weren't exaggerating how well they were being paid. The guards took it from them as a 'fine', but giving it to Gerox and his friends for subduing the thugs for them.
300gp to split among you, and 250xp each.
"Thanks for that. Now that we know that one'll be OK, I have to say this was the best time I've had all week," City Guard 1 said. "We'll take these guys into custody and let them cool their heels in the lockup. You're part of those sailing for Rum?" he asked. "I've got nothing but respect for you guys. It takes guts to sail halfway around the world to someplace almost nobody's ever been."
The guards march the thugs off the pier and into the city.
The sailors from the ship stream down the gangplank, and within a few minutes barrels are being rolled onto the ship from the shore.
"Get your arses moving, you lazy swine!" comes a booming voice from the ship. The deckhands hop to, trotting along about their business. The voice turns out to originate from a pudgy halfling who is walking from the aft toward the gangplank. He greets the party. "You guys the passengers from the WLA?"

"I am fine, Peza." Not actually fine, but also not wishing to put anyone to bother, Harvest Moon turns her back to the railing of the boat and slides to a sitting position. The polearm still maintains its upright poise as taught to her by Barratore Steelwind, and, though Harvest herself may no longer be seen from the dock, the polearm marks her position. "I think that I only need ... to rest ... Thank you, Peza," she says, clamping down upon the grimace in her voice.
Through the pain, though, and the lightness in her head, the words of the guards that come from the dock bring a soaring joy to the breast of Harvest Moon. They have done it. They have come to the terribly large boat, and they will leave now for Rum. It is now happening. And she is in the midst of it.
The twinge in her side is only slightly bothersome, when she raises a hand to cover her mouth after discovering that she has a very large grin upon her face.
"Yes!" Startled from her secret joy by the very large voice from the deceptively small halfling, Harvest Moon pulls herself to her feet with the aid of the polearm. "I am Harvest Moon," she answers quickly.
We are double-yoo-el-ay. The halfling says that we are.
But, then, who are these Fist? And why do they wish to stop us from going to Rum?

Brom is very glad to see that the thug will survive. He now takes a moment to look up at the others and their conditions. He was hurt, slightly, but most of that was from the kick he took the day before.
He turns to Lemick, who is next him tending the thug. "This guy is fine now. Barratore's in rough shape, but I'm not sure who else is hurt bad. Let's get everyone on board and handle the wounded."
He stands. "Alright folks, let's grab our wounded and get 'em on board, get 'em healed, and put this place behind us."
He moves over to Barratore and helps him up to his feet. "Come on, big guy." He chuckles a bit. "Never thought I would be saying that to anyone. Let's put this place behind us." He stands under Barratore's arm.

Afterwards he stands hearing Brom. "Aye, it was close. Others looked stable, but will certainly be resting for a few days." Lemick helps Brom with Barrator if needed.
Once aboard he looks for a place he can sit out of the way. Twice in two days time, his body wasn't use to such adrenaline bursts or near-death experiences. At least this time he understands what occurred. As these thoughts linger, he wonder which room/hammock will be his -- his armor is making him nervous now that the floor rocks. "Lemick, here." he waves as the captain looks for introductions.

The halfling gives them something that might be a bow, but he's so short and stout it's hard to tell. "Artus Morindim at your service. I ain't the cap'n, but the navigator. I run the crew. But for all intents and purposes, she's MY SHIP!" The last he seems to be yelling at his men. "And she's a beauty, sleek and sure; she won't fail to get us to Rum! But, er.... there's a little snag."
The halfling's weathered face melts into a sheepish expression. "Me boys are laying in provisions.. spare wood for the carpenter, water, rum for the men, and we're all set, except... for food." His expression changes to an angry one as he thinks about the situation he's now in. "The bloody merchant who's contracted to give me my cargo of food for the voyage has suddenly developed a... greedy bone. He's broken his contract, and is holding my food hostage unless I pay him quadruple!"
Artus paces back and forth across the deck as he explains the situation. "I've already complained to the WLA and they're working legal channels to get a judge to order the food delivered, but that could be a week or more, and the Fleet is due to sail tomorrow!"
He looks Barratore up and down, and then Brom. "You look like good strong lads and ladies. I need your help. Get my food from the warehouse. Either convince the guards to let us have it, sneak it out, or bust it out. There's over three thousand pounds of food marked for my ship's hold, and we can't sail without it! It's not stealing, it's already bought and paid for, he just won't give it over."
One of the barrels rolling down the gangplank gets away from the men rolling it and slips over the side and into the water. "WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING, you ham-fisted BILGE-RATS?" he bellows. "Up to you how to do it," he says to the adventurers. "It's that big warehouse down at the north end of the dockyard. I have to see to my men. They're USELESS without me watching them every second! You can patch yourselves up belowdecks and sort yourselves out for tonight." The word 'useless' was yelled back over his shoulder at the aforementioned men. He moves off to oversee his men and you are left with a bit of planning to do amongst yourselves.

In the pause while Harvest Moon stands in stillness, clinging to her polearm as desperately as she clings to her awareness, in this briefest of moments, a thought comes to her.
"Mister Artus Morindim ... " she asks, her voice strained from her difficulties, " ... do you know of this merchant? Do you know his name? Do you know his reputation? Might he have friends who are these Fists? Mailed Fists," she corrects herself.

We could try and take it by force, go see the merchant and try and get him to hand it over, or try and fool the guards. Trying to sneak it out isn't an option due to how much of it there is and how few of us there are."
He continues "I don't think taking it by force would be a good idea, it might attract the watch and while it is paid for the merchant may claim otherwise and get us thrown in jail. I would suggest we either go find the merchant and see why he suddenly decided to hold back the shipment and see if there is something we could do to get him to release it to us or we run a con on the guards. We don't have all that much time so the second option may be hard."
Gerox Shale Thursday August 4th, 2011 9:39:50 AM
Gerox adds, "I will go as well. I would bet the mailed fist is putting pressure on this merchant and he is afraid to deliver. We need to get him alone and have a discussion with him."

Lemick thinks a moment. "I think only a few of us should speak with the merchant. This way if he warns the guards to be on the look out, he only has a few descriptors. I agree about this Mailed Fist likely be an influence. Be sure to take the proper paperwork with you."
"While some chat it up, others could scout it out."
"Now Assuming we cannot settle via the proper merchant channels, I was thinking if the warehouse is close enough to the docks, we simply roll the barrels into the water. Then with a few ropes, simply pull it to the ship. 3000 pounds of food would be 20 - 30 barrels? Course a wagon would work as well, but then we might leave the warehouse only to find another group of thugs on the docks."
While discussing, Lemick moves to the center of the group, and with a moments pause concentrates -- wave of blue warmth is felt by everyone including several of the workers. (Everyone heals 6, I think I'm going to like that new feature.)

Solving another problem Thursday August 4th, 2011 3:36:30 PM Harvest asks Artus if the merchant might have friends in the Mailed Fist. "Aye, it's possible," the halfling replies. "The Fist has their fingers in a lot of pies, but somehow I think this isn't them. They're more about action. This is more about greed," he suggested.
Lemick highlights the challenge inherent in moving that much merchandise, though he has the beginning of a plan in his head.
Crag suggests a sneaky route, since most of them are banged up a bit from the previous fight.
Iron Shot suggests waiting until they can rest and heal a bit more, but wants to hear Lemick's plan.
Brom is always in favor of the direct route. Want, take, have. How good is a job where you can raid and loot and not even be doing anything wrong?
Barratore turns his attention inward, berating himself for what he perceives as a poor performance in the last fight.
Peza suggests scouting the place out before they firm up their plan, hoping they can find a means of conveying the food back to the ship.
Leapold lays out all the options for his friends, suggesting that avoiding a fight might be best.
Gerox likes the Mailed Fist for the true culprits.
Lemick continues the planning, saying that some should talk to the merchant, and some scout the warehouse. He then channels some energy into healing his friends.
Iron Shot says the plan to float the barrels is a good one.
Brom says he'll go along with the plan, he just needs instructions.
Artus says the merchant packs up at sundown (which it almost is now), and is unlikely to see them unless they come carrying a chest full of silver. He does offer directions to the warehouse.
The warehouse is at the north end of the dockyard, a significant distance to carry that much weight. They may find some means of conveyance, whether by boat or cart or magical floating disks, Artus doesn't care. He just doesn't want to starve on the way to Rum. You get the sense he likes his food, does Artus. He didn't get that belly from starving himself, that's for sure.
The warehouse itself is fairly unremarkable. There are a few of them along the north end of South Harbor, spaced a bit apart to allow large numbers of horses, wagons, and carts to move around and between them. This one happens to be painted red. There are two large front doors, one door on the eastern side, and one near the back in the western side. Four guards stand outside the front door. There are no windows, so you can't see inside to find out if there are any surprises.
Scouting the warehouse: If you want to send a scout (or two), I will let them move around and do whatever they want to do. If they get inside, I will give you the map (layout) of the warehouse. Scouting it may take a couple of days of posting, but could be worth it in that you will have a lot more information than if you just 'go for it' and try to storm the door, in which case you will find out what it looks like once you make it inside.

While waiting for an answer from the Very Loud Halfling Artus Morindim, Harvest Moon is the subject of two separate miracles. First is a touch upon by her shoulder by Lemick of Waard. A blue light comes from his hand to her body, and the pain melts as butter in the heat. Moments later, as the others speak, he makes another blue light, this one radiates from him and covers all around. With the second light, the pain is gone, completely, as though it was never there.
Stunned by this surprising and wonderful magic, Harvest barely notices the gnome, Gerox Shale, as he places something into her hand. When she looks down, she sees that it is more coins.
"Excuse me," she says, breaking in on the planning, "can we pay for the food once again using this money?" she asks, and holds her hand out to show the coins that they had gotten from the Hirelings of the Fist. "Then perhaps, the merchant and his guards might help us in the carrying of it."

"Very well. I too wish to go to the warehouse," says Harvest Moon. On her face, though, the doubts linger. It is one thing to fight against those who bar your way. It is another to burst into the place of another and take things from them. For Harvest Moon this has a bad feeling.
It is not so difficult as she had thought, at the warehouse, to remain concealed from sight. The many people make this more simple than one would expect. Harvest keeps a sharp eye out for hidden watchers. If there are more guards here than meets the immediate eye, it would be best to find them now rather than later.

"Well, Barratore, if you are going to the warehouse, I'll go visit this merchant."
What's the Plan? Friday August 5th, 2011 7:18:30 PM Harvest is wonderfully surprised by the healing magic. She suggests that they use the money they've gotten to buy the food again.
Crag is against paying again, but agrees some scouting is in order to know what needs to be done.
Peza agrees that the money they got from the thugs would have a certain sense of poetic justice if they used it to pay the Fist off, assuming the Fist is behind the warehouse problem.
Gerox agrees some scouting is in order, but doesn't seem to understand the idea of covert. When he knocks on the door, nothing happens for a minute, but eventually he sees a slide in the door open and a pair of eyes looking out, but as he's too short to see out of the slide, it shuts again and he can hear grumbling about 'stupid kids' fading away from the door.
Iron Shot agrees that scouting it out is the best option. As for talking to the merchant, Artus points out that by this time he'll be at his home, safely ensconced on a street well patrolled by the city watch, and unlikely to receive visitors, but they could try.
Barratore would like to get some shopping done before they leave. There are shops along the docks open 'till late, and the entrance to the Catacombs never closes. He agrees to go with Gerox, and reminds them all they'll need a cart to move all that food.
Harvest decides to go to the warehouse with the others, though she doesn't feel good about stealing. Artus answers her thoughts. "You don't look happy about this. I told you, it ain't stealing. It's ours, bought and paid for, he's just holding it hostage for ransom. You'd be... er... liberatin' it."
Leapold is for trying the merchant's shop, but as Artus has already mentioned, the shop would be closed. He's always gone before sunset.
Brom wants to talk to the merchant as well.
The response at the back western door of the warehouse was slow, but somebody did hear the knocking. There are guards out at the front double doors. You haven't tested the side one yet, but likely you want to avoid people seeing you or having any reason to believe you're there if you scout it out. You do notice there are a couple of carts parked out back, but no horses or oxen to be seen to pull them.

Harvest Moon runs the word over and over in her head to bolster her resolve as she creeps quietly around the northeastern corner of the warehouse. A look over her shoulder reveals the tail of Barratore Steelwind where he and Gerrox Shale speak with someone at the door there. Perhaps if there is some other way in, and, perhaps if they distract whoever might be within the warehouse ...
There are wagons here, Harvest Moon notes. And there is a pen for animals it seems. But, there are no animals within.
Rounding a second corner, Harvest Moon finds an unguarded door! This way, perhaps. If there is no one within.
Carefully and quietly, Harvest places her ear against the wood of the door and listens for the sounds of anyone who might be upon the other side. (Side Door on the Eastern Side of the warehouse. Position listed below.)

[OOC: I'm confused. I thought we had just finished at the docks and we were deciding how to handle the warehouse. Now it's dark and we've split up? The merchant is safely at home? I didn't think talking to the merchant was going to be a black bag job. I thought we would go during business hours.]
Don't know if anyone else is with Brom or not.
Brom sees that the merchant is gone home for the evening. He asks around a little to find out where the merchant lives. [Diplomacy DC14 - not bad considering the modifier]
After walking to that part of town and seeing the amount of armed patrols, Brom decides that maybe next time he would visit the merchant earlier in the day. But again, he told the others he was not a planner.
Brom decides he'll go check out the warehouse and find the others. His muscle will be of more use there than walking the streets aimlessly.
He does try to keep an eye in the darkness for unwanted attention. [Perception DC6 - nice natural 1]

Lemick takes in the area, the guards, wagons, and lack of animals. He motions for the group to refocus and make a real plan. Seeing 4 guards outside, Lemick figures at least that many, if not twice that are inside.
Perhaps a block over he whispers to those that followed. "We need to remove the guards outside without making a scene. Then lure the others outside. We can certainly get in, but we don't want the crazy WLA killing, burning and stealing story. We don't want an investigation delaying our departure."
"Anyone got a sleep spell or a way to knock some of them out long enough to tie them up? Gaining control of the front will likely gain us access. Ideas from there? I'd rather pay them off, than the merchant he adds. They are doing their job, the merchant is stealing."
He looks to the others to help fill in some more details preferring the commonality, than individuality of such a dangerous endevour.

Barratore shows his bag of gold, but the eyes look up at him, then a weedy voice says, "This isn't a shop, it's a warehouse. No more deliveries scheduled for today. Go away."
Harvest finds the eastern door unguarded, and behind it sounds quiet.
Brom does find the merchant's house, but the merchant himself lives in a guarded estate in the rich part of the city. Chances of even getting an audience with him are slim. Rejoining the others at the warehouse seems easier to him. On the way back, looking over his shoulder he runs straight into a wall he failed to notice, but nothing was bruised but his pride when a child saw him and snickered at him.
Lemick suggests a frontal assault in stages, taking the few guards they can see and then whoever comes out to check on them. He suggests also that they might be able to bribe off the guards.
Crag seconds the bribing idea.
Gerox grumbles at being overlooked, and insists that they are there to pick up their delivery, but nobody comes to the door again.
Iron Shot conceals himself with a good line of sight on the back door Gerox and Barratore are at.
Leapold finds there's a small window on the roof, and sees several more guards in a front room. Four more or so. There's a back room apparently, because the door on the other side of the room he can see doesn't match the door he knows Gerox and Barratore were at. The guards are sitting playing cards just inside the large double front door, the side door seems to be unmanned. There seem to be an awful lot of crates and barrels piled up around, as you'd expect of a warehouse. The front and side doors are barred; though not a particularly thick, heavy bar on either door.
Artus strolls up to where Peza is, carrying a small sack. "Dug these up for you guys. Pass 'em around, they could help if it comes to gettin' pugilistic or whatnot." It's the quietest you've heard the little halfling speak. It almost qualifies as a whisper.... almost.
He hands you the sack, which contains a number of small glass bottles labeled as following: --Bardic Potion of Hypnotism --Bardic Potion of Charm Person --Bardic Potion of Disguise Self --Bardic Potion of Calm Emotions --Bardic Potion of Glibness
With them is a note: To the new Adventurers assigned to the Sea Sprite: welcome aboard, and thank you for your assistance. Here are a few things to help you on your way. May the luck you find be as good as the luck you make.

"Now, back to this here warehouse. If they ain't gonna answer the door, and there is nobody outside, then we gotta help ourselves inside. Looks like we either break in a door, or go to the skylight and try and get in there. It's either that, or get them to answer the door which they don't seem to be of a mind to do."
"At some point, they probably change guard shifts, but then there will be twice as many."

With no sound coming from the other side of the door, Harvest Moon dares to try the door. It is an uneasy feeling that accompanies the attempt. It is not her door. It is not a public door. Should she be doing this?
... liberatin' ...
It is with a feeling of relief that Harvest finds the door to be either locked or barred from the other side. She returns just in time to where Lemick of Waard and Crag Hammerfist stand to hear of the idea of paying the guards to allow them to retrieve the food.
"I think that is fine idea," she adds. "I have many coins to contribute to such a thing. But how does such a thing as this work? Who should approach the guards to ask them whether they will agree or not?"

Debatable plans Thursday August 11th, 2011 7:33:45 AM 1) What is the time of day? It is just after dusk.
2) How many bystanders and other people are about? There are not many people around the warehouse except the guards, but there are occasional passersby. They're almost all on their way to or from someplace, though, and not paying much attention in general. The city watch seems more concentrated down by the ships than up this end since most of the merchants hire their own guards.
It should be noted that a character can push or drag along up to five times his maximum load
Crag suggests breaking in through the side door or skylight.
Harvest prefers the bribing the guards plan.
Iron Shot just wants to get on with it.
Peza suggests that they, along with possibly some help, could push/pull the wagons along.
Gerox laments having used all his Color Spray spells for the day, but he still thinks they should just force their way in.
The warehouse seems quiet enough, but there are more guards inside than just the ones at the front door, but they seem to be right near the front door. It's unlikley you could go in that way without alerting them. The side door shows promise but the guards are still likely to see them before they can move the massive amount of stuff out. A couple stealthy people might be able to get a good look around, though.

The bag of medicinal draughts is interesting. Never has she seen such things. Harvest Moon inches closer to Peza to possibly ask for a look when a loud pounding comes from the direction of the warehouse. A glance back in the direction of the building reveals that it must surely be the minotaur Barratore Steelwind who is doing such.
Then, a confluence of unrelated details occurs to the half-elfish girl. She has not seen the one called Leopold for some time now. Last she saw, he appeared to be sneaking about. His manner suggested possibly that he wished to gain entry. The guards also, appear to be at the front of the building whereas the minotaur Barratore Steelwind is at the back. If Leopold has gained entry and is in the warehouse even now. And, if the guards respond to Barratore Steelwind's knocks, they must certainly need pass through the warehouse itself to answer the knocks, thereby possibly discovering Leopold.
"Oh! Oh, I am sorry, but I think that I must stop this." Quickly excusing herself, Harvest Moon leaves the others on the dock and rushes through the evening gloom to the rear of the warehouse.
"Barratore Steelwind!" Puffing a little from the exertion, Harvest Moon reaches up to take the minotaur's much large arm and begins pulling him away. "Come, let us knock at the front of the warehouse. I think that it is better there. It is much better. We should knock there." Without much more explanation than that, Harvest Moon leads the way.

Debatable plans Friday August 12th, 2011 5:37:38 PM Barratore does his best to make it sound like he wants to break the door down without actually doing it. He hopes it will serve as a distraction to help others get into the place; or annoy the guards enough that they'll come back to talk.
Harvest, immediately seeing the flaw in this plan, goes and grabs Barratore to attempt to drag him away from the back door and over to the front.
Brom moves to join Barratore and sees the almost comical sight of the slight half-elven Harvest trying to drag the big minotaur by the arm.
Lemick is annoyed with the lack of coordination among the group, and tries to lay out a plan for them to follow.
Peza agrees with Lemick that a coordinated plan is in order, and suggests that they use all the doors to keep the guards spread out.
Leapold searches for a way into the building. Sadly the skylight is not big enough to pass through, even if it opened, which it does not. He notices the side door on the east is shaded and unguarded. The bar doesn't seem too think and he could probably get in that way if he could cut the bar on the door, which he estimates wouldn't be too difficult (but would take about 10 minutes to do slowly enough to avoid drawing the attention of the guards)
Gerox thinks about it for only a moment before joining Harvest and trying to convince Barratore that she has the right of it.
Crag looks over the potions, trying to figure out the best way to use them. There are indeed only one of each type of potion in the bag, so they'll have to use them carefully.
While you're milling about the west and south sides of the building, something happens. The guards that are inside the building come out to join their fellows outside the front door. You're not sure why that should be, but it seems a stroke of luck for Leopold that nobody's inside the main room of the warehouse, but a stroke of BAD luck for anybody who wanted to assault the front door and catch them unawares. There are now 8 guards, and while they look a dull sort, they're all in good armor. On the upside, if you choose to try to bribe them, they're all in the one place, now...

Harvest Moon ponders the situation as the potions are explained and plans are made. This is not so easy a thing as simply fighting off those who wish one ill or who would take one's things for themselves. It appears that there is, perhaps, more to being an adventurer than simply being a fierce fighter. More even, then being more clever than others. It is, perhaps, that thing of which Thelonious spoke, the thing which she did not fully understand save in the context of when to strike and when not to strike.
He called it, "judgement".
She observes each of the others who are in the Adventurer's League along with her, and it is the easy way of the gnome that stands out among the rest.

Brom settles in and prepares to watch the plan start. "Just tell me where you want me. Back here with Barratore or with the talkers."
"If we get the supplies, Barratore and I should be able to move the wagon."
Come Together Thursday August 18th, 2011 7:09:58 AM Harvest endorses the plan where Gerox talks to the guards with the help of the potion.
Leapold begins cutting through the bar on the back door. It will take him close to ten minutes to cut through it quietly, though he could go faster if he wasn't concerned about somebody hearing it.
Iron Shot agrees with Harvest that the potions and talking it out is the best plan.
Gerox says that he's OK with trying to sweet-talk the guards and prefers it to the fight.
Lemick offers his assistance and the luck of Wardd.
Barratore thinks he shouldn't be around because they may be put on guard since they may have seen him already.
Peza suggests the potion of Glibness for the action, and thinks they should co-opt the Sea Sprite's sailors to help move the wagons.
Brom reminds them that he and Barratore could probably move the wagons.
The guards seem at ease, quietly joking with one another, right up until you approach them.

"I will go, Peza!" In her enthusiasm, Harvest Moon leaps into the air with the polearm head high. She whirls and goes rushing off, in her haste, nearly braining her friend Peza with the butt end of the polearm.
"Wah! I am sorry, Peza. I ... I am so sorry."
In addition to the wild swing that had come so near to harming her friend, Harvest Moon pictured herself running down the dock with the polearm held horizontally above her head. In her minds eye, the tiny Harvest Moon with the horizontal polearm encounters two tall pillars at either side of the dock. Needless to say that there are no such pillars. Nor is the dock so narrow as to present this problem. But somewhere, at some time, there could be, and it might be so. The tiny running figure of Harvest Moon meets the strong, fast, immovable pillars ...
"I will go to fetch the sailors, Peza." A much subdued Harvest Moon now holds the polearm vertically as taught to her by Barratore Steelwind. There is much wisdom in this, and it is a fortunate thing that she has been able to see this before it is too late.

(ooc before we see the guards) Gerox pulls out some ink from his backpack and some paper and looks to hand it off to someone. "My writing looks to gnomish. Need a human hand." Once he hands the paper off he says, "Does anyone know the merchant's name? (I didn't see it but assume we were told at some point) Write down that we have met his price and he is releasing our goods to the Sea Sprite. Make it look official"
As someone finishes that task, Gerox will take a look at the potions and pocket the potion of Glibness and the Charm person potion. Before going around the corner, he pulls the stopper of the glibness potion and sucks it down. He grabs the forged documents and walks briskly around the corner to the guards.
"Hello good sir, I am here to pick up the Sea Sprites good stuffs. Your skinflint boss has finally released the food so we can get it loaded. Hurry up and open the doors, we leave on the tide and if I don't get this cargo secured, the captain will have me keelhauled. "
Gerox holds the release form out to the guard who looks like he isn't in charge and says, "Gentleman, how would you like to make double wages today. If you can help me get this cargo loaded, I will pay 5 silvers each. Some of you can stay and do your duty while the rest help load. I will pay each man 5 silver pieces to help load those carts and help my drag them back to the Sea Sprite. What do you say?"

Playing the Game Wednesday August 24th, 2011 8:45:39 AM Gerox gets the guards' attention, and they do indeed pay very good attention to him. He seems not to be lying, his tones smooth and even. He seems to have a majority of the guards convinced of his veracity, and the offer to earn a little extra is tempting; these guards are, however, the greedy sort.
"5 silvers each?" one guard scoffs. "We get paid better than that for sitting around here doing nothing!"
Lemick stood by hoping his presence would inspire Wardd to grant good luck to Gerox.

Hunkering down in the midst of her tattered robes, Harvest Moon listens in on the bartering between the gnome Gerox Shale and the warehouse guards.
What was it? Ten copper make one silver. Is that right? Ten silver make one gold. Yes. That must be it. So, even if the gnome Gerox Shale doubles the amount to be paid, that would only be ...
... Eight.
Eight of the gold coins to pay to the guards. And each one of them received many more than that from driving off the Hirelings of the Fist earlier today. That is coin that they did not have yesterday. So even if it is given away for the purpose of retrieving their food, they will be much richer than before.
Coin is such a strange thing. It is a very odd thing to think of. But now that she has some - more than she's ever had in her entire life - it must needs behoove her, or so Harvest Moon supposes, to think of it, and its use much more than before.

The lead guard breaks into a smile. "Well, what a great day this is! I'm Arht, and we'll sure help. C'mon boys!"
Quite rapidly, the warehouse doors are opened and the guards are even helping to load any waggon the group brings up, all for 12 gold pieces!
It is full night by the time the three waggons are loaded and the drover/sailors are ready to move the three creaking waggons through now-deserted and dark streets. The guards, the warehouse being empty, are leaving to go to dinner and thier homes, and the WLA heroes are left with but a single sputtering torch to light the area before the warehouse.

It is a happy thing to win, as they have here this evening with the food. The earlier pain of the blows that she had taken from the Hirelings of The Fist are now completely forgotten, and Harvest Moon marches with high steps along with the cart as they make their way back to the ship.
She had gladly chipped into two of her coins. Such things are easy to part with for the sake of the food (and so much of it, more than she's ever seen in one place) and for their great victory. They are, after all, only two metal disks.
The happiness of Harvest Moon is such that it is not until they have begun to move through the streets that it occurs to her that they still might be attacked, and the food taken from them. Such would certainly be the fear in the Contested Kingdoms. They must be on their guard!
The thought brings Harvest Moon into a crouch, and she walks with greater caution. With keen elf-born eyes, she peers into the growing gloom. They will not be caught off guard. Not if she can help it.

Barrratore, Brom, and Iron Tom each take a cart and push and trundle the 1000 or so pounds of foodstuffs from the now-empty warehouse to the SeaSprite.
Waggons make a lot of noise, and they attract attention. The most prominent attention is nearly at the harbor region where a group of 8 toughs look over the three waggons hungrily; one half-clothed woman is even seen cleaning her nails with a wicked looking dagger... But the viligence of Harvest and Gerox makes it obvious the group isn't going to be surprised, and they look ready for trouble. The toughs only watch as the waggons continue on.
At the docks, the sailors have torches all around and begin the cumbersome task of stowing the food for the voyage. It is nearly midnight when the loading is done. Artus Morindim is still chortling over how the group pulled a fast one over the guards. "Priceless, Priceless!"
Artus puts half his sailors on a standing watch schedule, and lets the rest jump to the dockside taverns for one last carouse. "We sail at an hour from dawn with the ebbing tide", he shouts with a practiced bellow, "and drunk or lazy, you'll be working and not seeing port til we hit the Tauric Isles. Off you go!"
The sailors scatter or call good natured grumbles depending on if they have duty or not. The heroes? Seem to be on thier own devices on whether to 'carouse' or remain close to the ship.

Barratore, Brom, Crag, and Lemick take a last meal and drink (or three) with the sailors at a local dockside dive. And in more than one sense, it really is a dive! The center of the floor is a 20x20 foot pool that leads under the docks to the harbor. A board at water level and stools below indicate that the clientele at THIS place is not all land-dwellers. Sure enough, before the group finishes their first cup, two of the stools are occupied by a merfolk couple. The Innkeeper fawns over the merlady, providing her whatever they desire free of charge. And the reason for this becomes obvious once the lady is done and perches on the edge of the pool. Accompanied by a hammered dulcimer, she begins to sing.
It is a masterful performance that brings the tavern to absolute quiet except for the pure harmony of voice and instrument. The songs yearn for the carefree days of riding a wave, playing with the seals, and finding alabaster shells among white sandy shores. Songs that melt away stress, and worry, and care about what-comes-next, settling a feeling that it is good to be-what-is.
To dance among the waves, to leap about the shore To see the light reflect among the sparkling cliffs This dream belongs to me, this isle beyond the sea And the sun's morning rays lead on to my home.
When she is done, silence fills the room as all are in thier own thoughts.
.............
Harvest, Gerox, Leapold, Iron Tom, and Peza stay with the ship. About midnight, a skinny robed man with an angry disposition stomps his way on the dock almost to the SeaSprite. He looks long at the ship and the obvious readiness to sail, scowls and stomps away.

"Look, Gerox Shale!" Harvest Moon points over the edge of the Nest of Crows, down at the angry figure on the dock. She draws back quickly, with the realization that her whispered voice is likely much louder than she would like.
"Do you think that the man is one of the Fists? Do you think that we should capture him? Or, perhaps we should tell the Navigator Halfling Artus Morindim. It may now be best to leave earlier than we had expected."

Gerox giggles and says, "I wonder if that was our merchant friend or someone from the "Fists", but either way I doubt the ship will be leaving early. I would guess we would leave on the tide and with our crew who decided to take one more night ashore.
It looks like we will have a political situation to contend with once we get to Rum. From what I am seeing, I think that Woldian League isn't the only organization looking to get in on the ground floor of a new colony. I hope this infighting doesn't destroy the very thing both groups are trying to build."
Peza Tuesday August 30th, 2011 5:06:12 PM
Peza stays aboard the Seasprite ..... checking out the ship itself ... " going to be onboard for about six months ."...so she explores all the crook an craneys ...

"Iron Shot " Tom | HP 11/11 | AC 18/13/14 | CMD 18 Character Sheet (Troy) Tuesday August 30th, 2011 5:49:40 PM
Tom stows his gear securely, taking a pouch of twenty or so sling shots with him for general about the deck adventuring during the voyage.
After the robed figure stamps away, he turns to those of the party still on the ship.
"I reckon that will be a mess of trouble before too long. Do you think they would be so bold as to send a ship to try to take us out, or slow us down? Though slowing us down would be a bit harder than normal, on account of the Fixers we got on board. They'd have to take us out totally to stop us."

Barratore sits back deep onto his chair as the singing commences. Though a foreign melody and far more peaceful than his experience to this point , the taur finds himself drifting into a deep relaxed state. A small voice easily ignored and than completely unheard says something. Problems, failings, all trouble flees his mind and body and for the first time in a long time, Barratore is completely at ease.
The song done he hoists his Clayton to his companions "To a safe voyage and prosperity with honor!" he thunders and then slams the drink. Barratore stays as late as the others, not being the one to call it an evening.

The serene song of the woman tempers his "let's fight" attitude.
Barratore's toast immediately lights a fire in Brom's belly and he stands and shouts "A safe journey!" He pounds his ale.
Crag Hammerfist AC: 18, HP: 11/11, CMD: 13 Wednesday August 31st, 2011 1:23:06 PM
Crag listens attentively to the beautiful song sung by the creature the likes of which he has only heard of. The song reinforces his decision, at least in his mind that he chose properly in leaving his ancestral home to travel the world and help those in need. To Crag, it is almost as if the Gods were telling him he is doing what he should. By the end of the song, he wants nothing more than to see this isle that the girl sings of, as engrossed in the song as he is.
Hearing his companions in a corner of his mind dedicated to the present, he joins in the toast. "Aye, a safe voyage, and the guidance to help them that need it most."
He looks around, seeing if anyone else approaches the Merlady, thinking of going over and speaking with her for a moment before doing so. "Evening. I'm Crag. Your song was beautiful, and I just wanted to thank you for honoring us with it. We leave on the SeaSprite on the morrow for a lengthy journey, and I hope there is something out there as beautiful as what you have sung of."
Lemick 4-Leaf Sted/Anthony hp 9/9, ac 20/12/18 Wednesday August 31st, 2011 3:51:44 PM
Lemick sits back finally finding something he likes and didn't have back home. Sure celebrations had singers, but nothing like what he had just heard. As Crag approaches the singer, Lemick follows and offers his own compliments and coin (if that seems to be the norm).
He does hope to ask, without seeming pushy, "By any chance do you have some general knowlege regarding the sea in the direction we travel?"
