What you have done to this point in your life is now of little consequence. Good decisions, bad decisions, they no longer seem to matter. You at least have a chance at a lucrative future.

Well, at least if the invitation you hold in your hand can be believed.

You have questions to be sure. Makes you wish you would have asked some questions of the messenger boy who delivered you invitation. Looking back over the message it reads:

Dear Sir/Madam [Insert your name here],

It is with much honor that you are hereby cordially invited to attend a meeting at the Sabertooth Lounge, Gold Level, Floating City this evening. There you will hear a proposal for adventure and wealth to which you will be ideally suited.

Refreshments shall of course be provided.

Respectfully Submitted,
-The Trade and Merchants Guild

The message seems to indicate the meeting taking place in about an hour.

OOC: It is your choice if you are alone, or with others from the group. You would only be with other from the group if it fits into your background.

Feel free to make any needed rolls, ie: Knowledge: Local or Geography perhaps.

The tan skinned, brown haired human takes one last look at the letter and stows it into his pack. He then runs one of his hands through his hair and sighs. "Damn. I had hoped it would just be one person I'd have to talk to, but it seems like its never that easy. Toregan then heads toward the Gold Level. He definitely stands out, for most of the wealthy who lived on the gold level would not expect to see a person who was garbed in worn traveling cloths and bloodstained leather walking around seemingly armed to the teeth. His own appearance wasn't much better, dirtied and with a scraggly beard forming on his face, as he had been living out on the Fence Level since he had arrived at the Floating City. The three scars running down the side of his face only add to the air of competency Toregan tries to surround himself with. As he arrives on the Gold Level, Toregan tries to remember where exactly the Sabertooth Lounge is, and If the Merchants guild was indeed the one who Toregan had heard who was interesting in Cthonia.

Leonan, with mysterious message in hand, approaches the Mercenary Captain Willan to ask for permission to attend this enigmatic meeting with the so-called Trade and Merchants Guild. He only has an hour, so he acts with all due haste and urgency, and tries to impress the same upon his commander. Assuming he is given permission, he seeks directions from any helpful locals, and proceeds to the meeting.

Kelgore wasn't quite sure who these people were or how they heard of him, but his purse was light and he needed something, even if it was at some snobby dinner.

To be fair, he didn't even know where this place is. He would have to ask someone, which means that he would have to TALK to them. Why do things always work like this? He could easily pass whatever challenges lay ahead, but he couldn't even FIND them...

Well, the local vagrants should know something.

With a snap of his fingers, a small jet of flame erupts from his thumb and ignites the now-memorized letter. Tack lets it burn in his hand for a moment before dropping it, and stomping out the flame. He also blows on his thumb theatrically to extinguish the magical one.

A small man with no hair, Tack has the tanned face of a traveler. He also has a very rough look about him, but it is very charming -- like a dashing rogue might look. He is wearing a forest-colored cloak and similar shirt and pants, without any frivolous adornments. He has a leather satchel over his shoulder, which seems to be empty, but is paired with a light crossbow painted red. He has no shoes, but very hairy feet underneath his pant legs.

With a name on his lips, he seeks out the location of the free refreshments - the Sabretooth Lounge - as well as his traveling partner, Henrix Sharpsword. A small sorcerer in the big city, as it were.

Meranus reads the little missive with growing dread and annoyance. He's seated at...well, next to a table at the Message in a Bottle tavern; the surface doesn't even reach the minotaur's knees. Before him sits a properly-sized bowl of fish stew, mixed with "potatoes" and other unfamiliar vegetables, two brown loaves of bread, and a small bottle of wine that almost reminds him of home. The golden, scarred taur gives the spread a mournful look, which he then shares with his coin purse. "Do all human merchants have such obnoxious timing?" he asks the man across the table.

Yngvar's eyes follow the messenger as he leaves the tavern. Turning and looking up at his drinking companion, "Well my horned friend, it appears that someone has noticed our arrival." Standing up from the table Yngvar waves a hand across his chest, cleaning off any dust or lint that has accumulated. Still looking up to his friend, "good thing I picked up that tourist's map at the gate, I happen to know where this 'Sabretooth Lounge' is, and it will take us most of that hour to get there."

Yngvar waves a hand at his friend cleaning off his clothing as well, what little there is of it. "Best put our best, horn, forward on this meeting."

Knowlege: Local DC 10Highlight to display spoiler: {The Sabertooth Lounge is on the Gold Level, which is also known as the second level. It is inhabited mostly by richer citizens and clients of the city.}

We will assume everyone is able to get directions and make it on time.

Upon reaching the Sabertooth lounge, you are all ushered in and seated in very plush leather chairs and recliners, ranging in size from small enough for a halfling, to large enough for the bulkiest of minotaurs. Valets of all sorts rush around you, offering cigars and tobacco for pipes, massages, a trip to the sauna and even permission to peruse the library as you wait for the meeting to start. There are Valets enough to answer all of your questions.

Everyone is now in the plush lounge/reception area of the Sabertooth Lounge. The Valet's informed you that they will be calling you all back momentarily to the dining hall.

Meranus nods in greeting to the silent ranger and settles into the largest chair, sighing in contentment for the first time since he left the isle. "This is wonderful. You don't even know, Yngvar..."

He takes a moment to scan the others summoned. The centaur, of course, is the first to draw the eye. The usual minotaur disregard of centaurs only enters Stormhorn's face when he spies the greatclub. Most of the others, Meranus dismisses quickly, although he sends a puzzled stare towards Tack, Henrix, and the pet.

A few moments after that, Meranus scratches an itch in his ear, and then calls over a servitor. "The note said something about food. I had to leave a nice spread in order to make it here. When do we eat?"

Toregan nods back at the golden furred minotaur. He also breaths a sigh of relief. He remembers Meranus and Ygnvar from their time on the road together. "Thank the gods that I'm not alone here. At least there are a few familiar faces." Other than the obviously small or large, few of the patrons catch Toregan's eye. He does eye the halfling and human pair who are accompanied by a raven. His casually scans the room, looking for any indication that any of the other patrons knew of the particular reason why so many different people were gathered here. He spends a few moments thinking about asking one of the valets, but quickly pushes the thought out of his mind. The reason they were here would have to be revealed eventually and embarrassing himself in front of complete strangers was not an appealing thought to Toregan.

Leonan saw what was going on here. His captain had referred to unlikely teams such as these as "adventurers" and did so with disdain. Was that what they wanted from him? To become an "adventurer"?

He knew that his time with the mercenary band was limited, he was outgrowing his role as a squire and they didn't need to want to split their purses with someone as green as Leonan. He'd have to hear out the offer. He makes his way to the others to the others who are obviously gathered here for the same business, offering a salutation to any of his colleagues who are civilized enough to speak Common.

Then he waits until they are called in to the dining hall, passing the time by silently praying to whichever god would most likely grant his humble request of making the taurs smell nicer.

Henrix jumps at the offer to peruse the library, and will spend as much time as he is allowed away from bothersome humanoids in order to check out the collection. He and Henrix will look for anything on magical theory, though if he can't find that he'll read just about anything. When he's eventually ushered out to the reception area he will carefully return any books he's taken. As he leaves the library and sees again the luxurious accomodations, he whispers, "They're certainly going through a lot of trouble for their guests, eh, Heckle? What do you think?"

"A lot of trouble," Heckle repeats loudly. Henrix's face whitens briefly.

When Henrix returns to the reception area he will find Tack or keep his distance from the other guests, smiling and nodding at any who greet him but otherwise remaining wary and deep in thought.

Nodding back at the scraggly bearded hunter Yngvar acknowledged his presence, an eyebrow raised to the varied gathering of beings in the room.

Smiling at Meranus' request for yet another meal Yngvar settled back to await further developments, twirling the scrolled message lightly above his fingers.

Tack smirks and takes a cigar, lighting up the same way he burned his note. Let's see what we got here...

A minotaur - nasty, wipe up that drool, man! - and several humans. Most of the humans are all very normal looking - like, more normal than normal people. Then again, maybe I'm just very interesting and others seem lame by comparison. Tack liked that thought, unfair as it might be to who are probably very capable fighters.

Pausing to catch his own familiar's eye - a raven perched outside a nearby window - he goes over to the over-muscled human not talking to anyone (Leonan).

"So! M'name's Tack, yourself?"

Everyone takes the time to enjoy the comforts of the Sabertooth lounge as well as get to know each other. After a few stragglers enter the lounge, Meranus asks about food. The servitor a tall, older gentleman, with an obnoxious whiney accent and a huge beak of a noise that stays pointed in the air answers him."Mmmhhh, yes, Mr. Stormhorn, if you and the rest of our guests would be so good as to follow me this way, I'll have you seated in our private banquet hall." The servitor leads the lot of you, as well as a few others, undoubtedly here for the same purpose, to the banquet hall.

You enter the banquet hall and are seated at a very large oblong table with ample seating for everyone. The hall is well decorated, with items that would seem more at home in a museum. Sitting at the far end of the table is a man who according to his manner of dress, appears very cultured. He is of average build and height and in his mid thirties. He has an air of confidence about him. He is dressed in a fine silk shirt of blue, embroidered with red and green. As you enter he puts away his pipe and stands.

"Mr. Randolph, your guests have arrived." The servitor announces the obvious as he then beckons you all to be seated.

The man addressed as Mr. Randolph raises his arms and welcomes you all. "Greetings! I'm glad all of you were able to make it. Make yourself at home. We will speak of business soon enough, but for now, diner. Giles... have our meal brought out." The servitor responds. "But of course good sir."

Amongst the PC's are several other guests of Mr. Randolph who were waiting in the lounge as well.

One is very large Minotaur with a very gruff appearance and seems to say very little. When he does speak it always begins with, "Grom says..."

Another is a female gnome, that is quite cute... for a gnome. She wears an obnoxiously large hat like that of a southern belle.

The last two are quite obviously here together. The look almost identical. Both are human females, extremely beautiful, blonde hair, blue eyes, both wearing red leather of the highest fashion. The haven't been quit talking since the entered the lounge. Thankfully they we the last to arrive, and somewhat "fashionably" late at that. The also seem to have the obnoxious habit of finishing each others sentences.

The meal is brought out. It is pulled pork with multiple sauces to choose from. For those eating light, there are offerings of yellow and white cheeses, vegatable trays, soft fresh stone milled bread with butter, fruits and juice. The two human females, ask to have alcohol brought out, and soon many other guests are doing to the same and alcohol is offered to each of you.

Make any checks you deem appropriate.

The diner continues. Mr. Randolph makes small talk and answers questions asked of him not pertaining to the business at hand. He is a businessman... or merchant depending upon how it is told. Yes he is married, yes he has children... 7 to be exact. And the useless questions continue taking up time until the diner is complete. Those of you trying to get a sense of him... he seems honest, confident, and successful. Just the traits a of people hate in a businessman.

Grom seems... well very barbaric. He eats with only his hands, and loves telling stories like: "Grom says, this one time Grom met this one goblin. And Grom no like goblin. So Grom smash Goblin."

The Gnome is friendly and speaks to all who wish to engage her. She does seem to like the finer things in life, and seems rather well to do.

The twins... well, they don't allow any of you to get a word in edge wise. And it's hard to keep up with what they are talking about. You just catch a lot of: "Yeah, and I was like... totally, and she was all like, whatever, and then I was like..." That and the continue to drink. And drink. And drink.

He wishes to get on with the business so that he might escape from this irrelevant and dangerously well-to-do place and return to his studies, and wonders idly whether a well-placed Charm Person might not get some more information posthaste.

After a while, Heckle gets bored of sitting around watching. In a loud, obnoxious voice aimed at Meranus, he calls out, "Hey Fatty! Hey you! Scarface! Fatty-scar! Scarfat! Yeah! Scarfat!" At this last christening, which he seems to find utterly ingenious, he snickers in his strange way; then he flaps his wings in annoyance as Henrix reaches up to tap him on the beak. To Leonan: "Well met indeed, sir... No no, after you. Well, if you insist... So you must tell me, what do you do around town? You seem entirely to professional to be one of the city watch - are you, perhaps, a knight?"

To Henrix/Meranus: "A fine joke indeed! Your 'taurness, I'm sure you agree that this bird is trained very well, yes? Or perhaps my friend should make him tell the one about the dwarven house of ill repute instead?"

To the Gnome woman (who he sits next to, if possible): "Madame, if I may address you directly? *I* am Tack Greenword, servant of the arcane. I must inquire as to your own name!"

At some point during the conversation(s), he relays the fantastic tale of when he and Henrix battled the red dragon of eastwood, courageously defending a group of young maidens from the raging lizard's bite and flame. Mr. Randolph is somewhat caught off guard by the question of Meranus. "I do not own the Sabertooth Lounge, this room has been rented that we might conduct business here. Perhaps talk to the proprietor, I'm sure he could answer your question."

Tack leans over to the Gnome woman and asks her name. "But of course Mr. Greenword, I am Minniwinkle Nackleman. I guess I could be considered a servant of the arcane as well."

At the end of the story Grom looks impressed, the Twins Mallory and Jillian... they never stopped talking and undoubtedly heard little of the story... continue to bicker amongst themselves. The only things they do as much as talk, is drink. Minniwinkle laughs and says "My word, what a delightful tale!". Mr. Randolph says little aside from, "I'm sure..." Although he smiles as he says it. It's obvious he knows it's fabricated, but sees no problem in a tall tale.

Once dinner is complete and dessert has been brought around, Mr. Randolph pulls out an exquisite pipe, and begins smoking. After a few puffs he begins speaking.

Do well and your opportunities in this life will grow to include a chance to earn title in Floating City, land and property. While at the Post, room and board are free and a stipend of 20gp each a month will be issued for gear deemed required from the post stores. Any extracurricular earnings can be your own or invested in the Trading Post at your discretion. Are there any questions?"

Carefully wiping the corners of his mouth with a folded napkin, Yngvar settles back in his chair. Picking up an untouched crystalline glass of wine he gently rolls it in the light before taking a gentle sniff of the warm aroma from the red.

"Let me see if I have this straight. You wish to employ us as caravan guards? Don't get me wrong, this is a mighty fine feast you have laid out, I believe you have even managed to sate the near continuous hunger of my friend," Yngvar nods respectfully to the minotaur.

After a sip of the red wine, Yngvar continues "What kind of problems have you been running into so far? What's the length of trail between here and Cthonia? I think even our group would have a hard time patrolling more than a few days of any trail. I assume that transportation and trail supplies will be provided should any of us choose to accept your employ?"

Toregan grins at the mention of Cthonia. "Looks like it was good of me to come here. Finally a real challenge! The Thunderlands..... I wonder what will await me there." The title holds little importance to Toregan, but Unfortunately, as he opens his mouth to ask a question, Toregan almost immediately clams up. "Uh... Well sir.... Um, When... Meranus can hardly believe his good luck. After trying to get others to go into the thunderlands with him, this short, wemicish man was going to pay him to see the wilds. And if he wasn't going to be in charge, at least he would have two trusted pairs of eyes in the group - he shouldn't be in too much danger from the group. And most of these seemed intelligent enough - if there is trouble, surely they would listen to reason.

"It sounds like an excellent notion, trader. For a glance at the wildlands, I'm sure I can stomache an ill-advised ventriloquist," says the minotaur, as he glances at Henrix. "I am puzzled by your comment on extracurricular earnings, however. In a land with constant danger, as guardians, I wouldn't think we'd have the time...."

Leonan quickly addresses his colleagues.

"I think before we accept any offers, we should decide if we wish to negotiate individually or as a group. We can probably negotiate a better deal if we do so as a group. Personally, I get paid about 30 gold a month as a squire. I'd expect at least double that for such extremely hazardous duty as what they're describing. So for the lot of us, I think we deserve around 500 gold per month.

"Also, we should establish that we'll take direction, but not orders. We're going to be the ones risking our lives. They can tell us what needs fixing, but not how to fix it.

"Finally we should set a schedule for the contract. I'm not going to go to the middle of a wilderness filled with savage and man-eating thunderbeasts only to work for a single month before they decide to stop paying us and leave us stranded there. At the same time, I don't want to be stuck there forever, especially if the conditions and support are unacceptable."

Henrix breathes a sigh of relief, appearing to have expected a much more violent response from the minotaur. Despite his embarrasment and Tack's insistence on including him in his ridiculous stories, he maintains his air of silent vigil, listening carefully to everything Mr. Randolph says. Henrix remains suspicious of the offer, though he seems a bit less concerned about his immediate safety and the inane conversations of the other guests than he had been at the beginning of the dinner.

As Randolph begins to lay out the deal, he quickly pulls out an inkpen and parchment, pushing his dish out of the way to make room. He points to the pen with his finger and begins directing it to write. (He makes no effort to hide the writing - it seems to be a summary of Randolph's business deal.) While doing this, he begins to whisper something to the obnoxious bird on his shoulder.

Quiet as ever, Henrix listens closely to the negotiations and questions, nodding at the others and seeming mildly curious. In reality, he is focused completely on Randolph.

Tack raises his hand - being short is rarely an advantage when trying to get a word in edgewise, but he found that if you swallow your pride and just wave your hands you can get their attention just fine.

"Yes~! I have a question, a double-two-parter, actually.

Why is Cthonia referred to as 'the Thunderlands' and, given its rather curious title, would it be immediately fatal down there to hold a metal object aloft in the rain?

That was part one. Part two is rather simple: will there be other groups besides us patrolling the route, or will we be on our own once outside the outposts? In that vein, will we be expected to answer to some chain of command, or be on our own to operate as we see fit?"

Those who have met Tack know that he's not one to listen to orders - and that, in fact, the best way to be sure he does something is to command him to do the opposite. Of course, if he catches on to your reverse-psychology, the rules change...

Mr. Randolph listens to all of the questions as they come flooding in. He takes a another puff from his pipe before answering questions.

"I'll first address Mr. Songsteel. For you to make 30gp a month, you must have quite a benefactor, as most squires make 10-12gp per month. Feel free to accept the job to expand your horizons instead of finding yourself one of hundreds of umemployed squires within the city hoping to catch the attention of another benefactor while working the docks. Perhaps you need to reevaluate your own worth, else you may quickly find yourself living on Trash level. The offer has been made and will not be altered."

Another puff of the pipe and he continues. "Mr. Hefnd, to answer your questions, you will be much more than mere caravan guards. You will, as I said, be charged with dealing with any unsavory's in and around Cthnoia. Sure, you will be clearing the trade routes as well, but this is much more than just a guard."

Mr. Randolph listens as more questions are asked. "Ms. Nackleman, yes, anything you find may be kept for oneself. Which should also answer Mr. Stormhorn's questions about the extra activities."

"Yes, Mr. Greenwood, you question? Yes, Cthonia is known as the Thunderlands because... well yes there are some storms, but no, it is called Thunderlands because of the large "Thunder Lizards" that are known to make their home in Cthonia."

Mr. Grom... oh ok, just Grom, well, uh, yes, I am sure there will be a time when you Grom can "smash" things, just make sure they are not our things."

By this time the twins have begun hurling insults and causing a spectacle. "Giles, could you please have Mallory and Jillian removed? We will not be needing their services." Several servitors come in and remove the two extremely inebriated blondes.

"Ah, Mr. Kelgore, I appreciate your enthusiasm. However, I will not need an answer until in the morning. Quarters will be provide for all of you if needed. I will now leave you to think upon this offer. Feel free to stay as long as you wish to make your decision."

"However, if you all would prefer to follow your own business sense in this matter, and feel that I am wasting your time, or that my current employer is dim-witted then I will be happy to return to my previous service and leave you all to what is sure to be an adventure of a lifetime without me."

Unless of course, you're the poor bugger in this case, but you really don't look it to me."

Tack puffs his cigar once more before continuing. "On that note, Mr Randolph, please consider the predicament YOU'RE in. In that spirit, I daresay you should make some obligation to a substantial raise not long after we begin our contact, because at a mere 20gp per month, I don't suspect we will be working for you very long. More likely, we'll meet a merchant willing to pay quadruple that, plus benefits, for private security and work for him. That is, unless you are contractually obligated to meet Leo's pay grade and then some. And finally..." He turns to Kelgore, livid.

"If you ever imply that I am wasting anyone's time again, I will see to it that you are to brain damaged to ever imply anything, ever again." Either this Mr. Randolf thought he was picking up completely destitute morons, or he knows something about Cthonia that he isn't sharing.

"What is it about this Cthonia region? Any ancient ruins to be plundered? Indigenous populations to initiate trade with? Is there a high-end market for thunder lizard hides?"

Yngvar takes a sip of his beverage and looks down the table at Mr. Randolf, "your offer is intriguing, however, as my associates have pointed out, we all have trades where we generally make more than what you are offering, with considerably less risk to life and limb. I'm sure that there has been a miscommunication here, and that you simply meant that to be the earnings over expenses. Mr. Randolph waits a moments sitting patiently as he smokes his pipe, listening to all of the words be tossed about.

Obviously not seeing the reaction he wants, Grom stands downs his tankard of ale and throws it to the floor, pieces flying in all directions. "Grom say this hog-wash. Pay pathetic. Grom go find job where smash skulls for more gold." Grom kicks over his chair as he walks out. Giles as well as another servitor silently make their way over and pick up the chair, sweep up bits of the mug and remove Groms plate and other utensils as if nothing ever happened.

But truly I invite you into a larger picture, where you own 100's of acres of land, are a recognized lord or lady of Floating City with residence on Gold level, where you are on the guild board of Alchemy and arcane studies, a trapper or hunter of Wold renown through your true stories of adventure with the Thunderlizards and savages of Cthonia. What you are being offered is a chance to do something truly unique, that few other have ever, and will ever do. And along the way you will have a chance to become rich beyond your wildest dreams. Searching for books in the library, very little is found on Cthonia. Most references describe it as a wild uncharted land located near the Scab that is just as uninhabitable due to the large lizards and wild savages. Pretty much information that was already know.

Tack is able to find a rather shady bar and a few people are willing to bet with him. He pretty much breaks even for the night.

Everyone makes it back this morning and Giles seats everyone in the same banquet hall as yesterdays meeting. There is juice and fruit prepared for each of you but there are no servitors save Giles. As you are all seated Mr. Randolph and another man enters the hall. Giles bows lightly. "Mr. Randolph, I've been asked by Ms. Nackleman to inform you that she will not be attending today's meeting. Nor will she be accompany the others on this endeavor. She cited lack of creature comforts as her reason and asked that I pass on her apologies." Mr. Randolph nods and continues to his seat from the day prior. Giles exits and shuts the heavy banquet hall doors behind him.

Mr. Randolph stands after Giles leaves and begins speaking. "If you are here I assume it is because you are willing to accept this endeavor. So you all are aware, I shall be accompanying you to the site to make at the necessary introductions. Here is a map for each of you". (Please refer to the Woldipedia for the map.)

"To give you a better idea of what to expect here are some very key notes.

- The natives are godless savages and should be avoided. they will try to kill and eat you.
- Small and man sized dinosaurs run in packs through out the jungle. they will try to kill and eat you.
- Poisonous snakes and giant insects of all kinds are out there. they will try to kill and eat you.
- Poachers are known to frequent the region for dinosaur blood, scales, meat, ivory to pass to the Black market. They should be considered dangerous and unfriendly.
- Monstrologers and witches are known to frequent the region. Approach with caution as their motives and reactions are highly varied from kill you to neutral.

"You are extremely important to the Trading Post and to hopefully make that very clear I am prepared to give each and everyone one of you 50gp to purchase further equipment here in Floating City. I have secured transport through the Wayfarer guild and I would like to intoduce you to Artrius Myphcim, who will be our guide in transit."

The man who entered with Mr. Randolph stands and nods. He is a man of average build and looks, 5'10" 180 pounds fair skin, sandy blonde hair closely kept with a tightly kept beard and mustache.

"Good morning gentlemen. My name is Artius Myphcim and it is a pleasure to meet with you today. All the while, he laughs to himself - a quite grating and bothersome sound. Once the two men are done speaking, he points a claw at Meranus, who he seems to have just noticed, and rudely shouts "Hey, it's Fatscar! Is he going to try to kill me and eat me?" He laughs again, a sound which can best be described as a-

"Heckle!" Henrix whispers chidingly at the raven, who continues laughing but slowly quiets down.

"Perfect," Henrix thinks to himself. "I suppose that will be enough gold to buy materials for a few more scrolls... Never know when one might be handy out in the jungle."

He stares at Artrius, mistrustful. Something seems a little... off about him. Could just be nothing. He scrutinizes the blonde man closely, looking for anything out of the ordinary on his person and trying to get a sense of his inner thoughts. Henrix also considers what he knows about the Wayfarer Guild and its operations in Cthonia, suspicious that this may not be the first time Randolph has made this offer, and that the last party of adventurers might not have returned alive...

"Well, it's not enough to replace my sword, but I suppose that will wait." Kelgore thinks as money is mentioned.

"Doesn't matter. I don't need it."

He waits patiently through Randolph's speech, mentally adding "They can try" to the end of each point.

Looking at all his allies in turn, he is particularly amused by the man's raven, thinking:
"Heh, can't even keep a handle on a bird. At least he'll be amusing to watch."

Kelgore flashes a rare smile at the thought before returning to his trademark glare, waiting for everyone (besides the other bookish man, who appears to understand) to get going.

Tack shows up to the meeting hung over and about five minutes late, with a raven on his own shoulder. Though Poe nods to Heckle, he is the night as the other bird is the day - stern and quiet, seeming to contemplate what he is hearing.

"M'yeah, kill us, whatever. 'Kay. Mm-hmm.

Right now, Tack is trying to calculate exactly how many coffee beans he can buy for fifty gold.

Meranus stares at the little man with his bird...and then pats Henrix repeatedly on the head. The action appears unpracticed and stiff. He says, slowly, "We are all very impressed with your little puppet show. Now, why don't you take the gold that this nice man has provided and go buy some feed for your little friend? Do you know the way? Maybe Giles could go with you? Remember, if anyone tries to talk to you on the way, run straight back here and tell an adult." He turns back to Randolph, hides his mouth behind a massive hand, and whispers in a voice as soft as his snoring, "I hadn't realized he was so young; you humans look so similar. Are you sure he should be on this expedition? Is he the offspring of one the staff already there? Yours, perhaps, Wayfarer?"

Henrix is short, certainly, but not THAT short. His already pale face blanches in embarrasment and anger at the minotaur, but he does not rise to a defiant wizard's speech about the power of the magic he wields or proclaiming revenge or anything like that; no, not Henrix. He winces as he realizes Tack will probably point out the irony - it's usually the halfling who's mistaken for a child, after all.

He stands and collects his gold in a hurry, then leaves, muttering unintelligibly a bit under his breath. He and Heckle go shopping for magical supplies, and will be in the city for the remainder of the day.

As usual he unconsciously whispers these idle thoughts to the raven on his shoulder, who asks loudly, "What if Shorty doesn't share?" Henrix simply smiles mischieviously in response.

The Floating City Mutual understanding
Wednesday September 7th, 2011 11:46:23 AM

The party alls secures room at the Message in a bottle tavern. The group ends up at a single large table that the staff creates by pushing together a couple others.

Shortly after dinners are brought out the room gets quiet. A few stray flanks of cups and plates can be heard from the kitchen, but the common room goes hushed. The cause is quickly And easily learned. Moving across the tavern towards your table is a large half Orc and five humans. At just over 6'2" and 250 pounds with a scar across his throat wearing a chain shirt, leather gloves and a set of large canines patruding from his jaw, the half Orc does not seem to be one to mess with. The five wiu him, also wear chainshirts and there fair share of muscle.

The half Orc simply grabs a nearby chair as he moves and has a seat at the table. His associates remain standing. The chair is planted perhaps two feet from the table, reversed with the back toward the table and next to Yngvar and Henrix.

The half Orc quickly scans the grouP as a servant hussles over with a tanked of stout. "So," he begins his deep rough voice grates, "Rumor has it you have been asked and accepted the posts at the CTP by Randolph. So we need to have this little meeting to know where we all stand. Im Mr Bas and My associates need to continue to use the post as both an entrance and exit point and you will need to keep out of the way."

He scans the group. "clear?"

He reaches one hand out and pokes Bas into the muscle of his upper-arm. "You look like you can handle yourself, what's with the cheerleaders?" Yngvar hooks a thumb back at the five. "Entry and exit to what?"

Completely absorbed in the large book floating in front of him, Henrix is not disturbed by the sudden silence. As the half-orc approaches, however, his booted feet send quivers through the ale in his untouched mug, breaking the Henrix's concentration. Heckle snaps to attention, having apparently dozed off on the wizard's shoulder, his black feathers ruffling against the stark contrast of the wizard's flame-red hair.

Henrix's expression slowly changes from one of mild annoyance to one of fear. He grabs the book and stashes it safely into his sack. His eyes flicker down to the still-glowing staff at his feet, then back up to the half-orc, where they settle. Highly suspicious, he prepares himself for an attack at any moment, leaving diplomacy to the others as usual.

( 1d20+0 = 4 ; failed Will saving throw for disbelief ... assuming that being blinded by darkness is "interaction" with the illusion. )

After that moment of shock, Leonan realizes he's probably not dead, just blind or something, and figures this fight was won by the enemy before it even started.

"In the name of all that is Holy, I yield! The field of battle is yours. Now please, I beg of you, dispel this conjuration that has destroyed my sight, and accept my surrender on my honor."

I think we're having trouble seeing how the attack was justified, and why "we 'deserve' to be punished for 'provoking' it." Meranus certainly deserved to be chewed out and corrected for his comment, but that's usually a figure of speech. Yngvar's post was a pretty standard and polite opening to negotiations.

I'm not running this portion, so what I say has no bearing, but I wouldn't try to dictate terms to the mob, or other smugglers. Granted both of my character are Paladins and would have tried to haul them in so... I'd be in a bloody pulp on the floor as well.

The entire tavern is plunged into darkness and confusion. For many everything is pitch black.
Kelgore swings at his opponent and from the sharp cry directly in front of him he is sure that man can no longer see as well
Chairs can be heard overturning, plates and glass shatter and drop to the floor
Leonan announces his surrender
Toregan stumbles away through the black
Tack shoots under the table and out into the street where he finds a handful of others from the tavern and many nearby onlookers, though the commotion inside has not done much more at this point than peak the interest of a couple men lounging outside by a streetlamp
Inside the grating voice of Mr Bas calls out "You're not blind McAllister ya dolt, just a wizard mind trick. Finish that spell and I'll twist your head off"

Outside Meranus finds the door and exits and right behind him is Mr Bas and 2 of the thugs who turn left and head down the street. Toregan feels about around him, blidly serching for a table, overturned or not. If he can reach one from his loaction, he grabs it and flips it on its side, porbably scattering any food and drink on it onto the floor (Hopefully only a move/standard action). Then, if able, he will drope to prone behind the table (A free action to drop to prone).
If he finds an already overturned table, he goes prone behind it.
If he can only flip the table and not go prone behind it, he will then go behind the table and go prone next turn.
If he cant find a table around him right now he will spend 1 move action per turn to find one and the perform the actions above.

And for the hell of it, even with all the negatives Toregan is sure to have, he will try to subconsiously pick up the man's whisper over the panic of the tavern.

Henrix immediately recognizes Tack's handiwork, yet is unable to shake off the illusion. "Y-y-yessssir," Henrix chokes out in response to Mr. Bas's harsh command. Blinded by Tack's spell, he has no target but himself to enlarge anyway; the spell fizzles. "No use running, even with the scroll. They'll surely catch me, handicapped as I am." He does not deign to inform the bystanders nor his allies about the illusion - judging by the hit he saw Yngvar take, he supposes it's probably better if they all stay blind and just follow Leonan's lead. Abruptly he does so, raising his palms in submission and standing in the fake darkness, lame and defeated. "I ssssurrender."

Henrix sighs, feeling quite like he should have known Tack would get him into such a mess, and then remembers the fallen wizard. Assuming no one restrains him (disregard this if he is attacked or told to stop), Henrix slowly approaches where he thinks Yngvar is. If he finds him, he winces at the wizard's crushed and bloody face, attempting to determine if the bleeding has stopped. (I guess determining if someone is stable is a Heal check, but I don't know the DC. Heal roll = 5.) If he can't find him in one move, he'll cast Detect Magic to find him, which will take a few rounds to start helping.

Heckle continues hiding, assuming he has found a safe, elevated perch.

Tack considers the consequences of setting the building on fire. Nah, maybe that's not the best idea.

So instead he lets the darkness illusion drop and generates a new illusion - a hollow multicolored tapestry that morphs constantly into profane shapes and taunts - creating five-foot boxes that surround each of the antagonists. Meranus keeps his eyes closed, afraid that the blinding agent will get deeper into his eyes and cause further damage. The minotaur keeps walking, bumping into objects and providing a curious show for passersby. He keeps his hands waving in front of him to feel for obstacles; unfortunately, they're waving at about eight feet off the ground, well above any tables, pedestrians, small pets, food stands, barbeque pits, and the like. If he can hear water, as from a fountain, he will attempt to wash his eyes out there. If not...well, the entire city is a tower in the middle of a lake. He'll find water eventually, even if he has to fall into it.

(OoC: Of course, given that people have a tendency to walk in circles when they don't have a fixed point to follow, he may be walking for a few years...

Henrix fumbles about aqnd is able to locate Yngvar who is still breathing, though is sounds weezy and if he is under water. Without sight there is little Henrix an do in the way of tending to any wounds.
Tack drops the illusion and erects another inside the Message in th Bottle tavern, He disappears into the crowd as Poe flies up for an airial view
Meranus finds a wall running left and right and turns using one hand to keep the wall at his side as he walks. Several hard objects find his thighs, shin and stomach with the clatter of crates.

Inside, With the darkness gone the tavern scene is easily discerned. Two of the thugs are still there blinkning away the darkness and spinning about as the tapestries and boxes then spring up around them. One curses darkly, bringing Mr Bas's preferences into question and as he waves a hand throught the boxes he taunts he compatriot, "McCallister you really are a dunce. Like we say there is always one to take the rap. Guess you just signed up." With that the man bolts from the tavern leaving 'McAllister to his fate and spewing curses

Toregan, Leonan and Henrix find a few brave souls in the tavern moving to help them and Yngvar. A bar maid exits towards the kitchen 'To fetch a Healers kit' and the rest of the some dozen patrons and staff sit or stand in stunned silence. It is quite clear to all but the comatose that what just happened rarely if ever has before.

Outside, Poe can easily watch and pace Mr. Bas and the other 3 as they move purposefully but not hurried down the street. The sharp eyed bird can see no sign of a local watch reacting to the events, though in truth it was over in less than 30 seconds

Inside the tavern, the server returns and helps Yngvar, restoring 8HP to the wounded man. Leonan Toregan and Henrix all are inside in close proximity to each other, and Henrix's bird is flying out to find Tack. the Patrons seem a bit weary of getting to close to the party for the most part, with the exception of the man who helped Toregan find cover and the servant helping Yngvar.

As she works she talks, 'Horrible viscious man that Mr Bas. Heard he's killed dozens of men, een several of the watch. But they won't touch him that one is part of the Cat and Mouse gang.' At this point the barkeep hisses her to silence as he comes over. "Keep your teeth closed woman." She shoots him a look but does so.

Inside the tavern things return to a semblance of normal. The mess
Is cleaned, blood is being scrubbed from the floor the few patrons are returning to thier meals. Meranus finds his way back with some simple directions from the man that helped him to the fountain. For his part he seems to ignore Meranus' comments. Leonan expresses his thoughts on the entire venture. Hernia begins recording the events in his journal and a small decanter of brandy arrives for Yngvar containing perhaps 3 or 4shots. A few minutes after Meranus returns a group of Floating City's finest arrive

The three look across the room and split up. Two come over to the party and one heads to the Barkeep.
Addressing Henrix, one asks for an account of what happened

Tack has not returned to this point

Tack makes his way back and around into the alleyway of the bar that the 3 men entered. Locating some trash is not difficult and soon Tack has made a small pile by the wall. With a quick check left and right he casts Burning Hands and the debris alights. Tack moves quickly out of the alley and begins picking his way back to the Message in a Bottle
