Scene 3: Jailhouse Rock!

Reward and a Mystery [DM Jerry]
Tuesday August 23rd, 2011 10:04:09 PM

Zeoll, looks under the coffins of the last row and finds chits! Lovely chits! Colorful Chits! Chits! But do our heroes care? We're not sure dear readers. Perhaps they are so altruistic that they don't like treasure? That the joy of killing undead is enough? We'll see.

Zeoll finds the following chits under each coffin:

Coffin #1: 5 white chits
Coffin #2: 1 red chit
Coffin #3: 1 orange chit
Coffin #4: 5 white chits

Zeoll also turns the knob on the round halfling door. And he is almost pushed aside as Restlin steps through it to the other side. What Restlin doesn't notice is that as Zeoll opened the small green door, the other two doors disappear! Those with detect magic still up and concentrating see a surge of quick magic that vanishes as quickly as the doors disappear.

Zane turns out to be prophetic!

Restlin sees a scene, both familiar and strange. He enters into a jailhouse. There are three cells on the left side of the room and three on the right. The smells of stinky bodies assails your nostrils. That however, is not what catches his eye. Each cell contains a legendary monster!

On the left is:

1) A slithering blue multilegged reptils with a head crowned with two large curling horns: a Behir.
2) An Earth Elemental (Huge)
3) A Great Forest Centipede

On the right is:

4) A Medusa
5) A Two-Headed Troll
6) A Giant Tarantula

Fearsome! Inside each cell, on the back wall is a giant keyhole!

After the two rows of cells, there is another strange sight, a sizable arena! And to "bottom" it off, In the center of the floor of the arena, there is a huge sewer type entrance plated in gold.

Amazing!

Restlin (Carl) -- AC: 14/12/12 HP:43/43 (Spells) - Wand charges: 42
Wednesday August 24th, 2011 7:35:18 AM

"Hey everyone, there's some kind of crazy zoo in here!" Restlin calls out from the other room while checking out the captives he's discovered. He knows better than to stare at the Medusa, but he'll certainly check out the rest. Are they alive? Are they awake? Moving? Hostile? Glad to have some company despite being evil monsters?

Restlin won't proceed too far, however, without the might of the Iron Adventurers at his side.

He will look back at the wall he came through, however, to see if it's wide enough to accommodate the other doors that vanished when Zeoll opened the small one.

Zeoll (HP35 of 35, AC22/17)  d20+20=39 ;
Wednesday August 24th, 2011 9:08:08 AM

OOC: Jerry, is the passageway beyond the tiny door also narrow? Or maybe the tiny door opens onto a wide hallway? That is, how easily can a liontaur or minotaur fit inside?

Zeoll, seeing the earth elemental, calls out to it in, Terran, its native language, a language in which the liontaur is fluent. "Excuse me, good Sir Earthmaster, but can I help you in any way? Could you tell me what is going on here? What is this place, and what is going on? Perhaps we can aid each other."

Zeoll is attempting Diplomacy, and rolls a 39! Almost a nat 20.

[Note that Zeoll's accent is much less pronounced in Terran, a language with rolling, rumbling phonemes.]

Seeing a Medusa he puts his sunglasses over his eyes, hoping they will offer a little protection.

Bosk AC: 25/15/22 (Shield of Faith active) HP 49 of 61 Spells
Wednesday August 24th, 2011 9:34:00 PM

Bosk does his best to squeeze through the small door and join the others. it looks like we'll be putting on a show for the ring. I suppose the logical thing to do is proceed to the arena. I have a feeling that killing the beasts while caged would be breaking one of those unknown rules.

When Beri mentions the Medusa, Bosk takes the large sack hanging from his backpack and starts cutting strips for blindfold...just in case he needs it for Medusa.

"I Will Kill You" [DM Jerry]
Wednesday August 24th, 2011 9:58:58 PM

Restlin and Zeoll realize that everyone can squeeze through the door. On the other side, it is a room, not a hallway between the cells. Plenty of room for everyone.

The monsters look interested definitely and none the happy for being there. They hiss, growl, roar, etc. Definitely hostile, each and every one of them.

Zeoll talks to the earth elemental. It hesitates, thinking. Then coming to a decision, all is says back is, "I will kill you and earn my freedom." He doesn't speak after that having said his peace.

Beri realizes that the green creature is a type of centipede. It is gargantuan in size and definitely drips poison from its maw. It is also very rare, so the creature may never have actually been studied before at all!

Beri ascertains that the earth elemental seems to be the generic variety. Huge in size, it is a tank to end all tanks. It probably has the ability to move through earth. Yet it is trapped in this cage. Of course, it is in fact in a magical ring. One wonders what being in an artifact ring does to such abilities.

Zane Stormfront AC 24 HP 49/50
Wednesday August 24th, 2011 10:42:07 PM

Zane will make his way through the small door, then spring to his feet, staying ready for almost anything. He does a quick count on his fingers, counting up first, then back down.
"I have a bad feeling about this.... There are 8 enemies and how many of us?
I'm gonna bet we each will have an opponent and it's winners live losers, well you can guess that as easy as I can."

He opens his quiver and does a quick check of it's inventory being sure what's in there, satisfied he closes it again and smiles, a grim smile, a determined smile, and one that indicates he's ready....

Restlin actively listens in to Zeoll's conversation with the elemental. "Stubborn as a rock; no surprises there," Restlin mutters to no one in particular (in common).

He makes his way past the cages, avoiding the gaze of all the creatures contained within them. He'll cast detect magic again and scan ahead as he makes his way along. Once in the arena, he'll check out the golden sewer entrance quickly.

Bosk AC: 25/15/22 (Shield of Faith active) HP 49 of 61 Spells
Thursday August 25th, 2011 10:25:16 AM

Bosk ponders Zane's comment. I hope for all our sakes that you are wrong and that we fight the creature's one at a time. If each cell has a keyhole in the back, we might have to fight them to get the keys and then open the cells to get at the door. I suppose the keys may also be located in the sewer.

Zeoll (HP35 of 35, AC22/17)
Thursday August 25th, 2011 10:32:52 AM

Zeoll relates what he learns. "My guess," he says, "Is that therre is a key somewherre close by. We enterr the arrena, prreparre forr a fight, and toss the key into a cage of ourr choice. The monsterr within unlocks its cage and comes out forr a match."

"Though how the behirr orr tarrantula orr centipede could unlock itself I don't know. Maybe we unlock it somehow. Maybe the key is verry long."

Zeoll tries to remember what he has heard about each of these creatures. Using his Bard Loremaster ability, he takes 10 on Knowledge skills for each. The Knowledge DC to "Identify a monster's abilities and weaknesses" is "10 + monster's CR"

1) Behir - CR8 - Know Arcana DC18 - Zeoll takes 10 for a 23. Two useful bits of info gained.
2) Huge Earth Elemental - CR7 - Know Planes DC17 - Zeoll takes 10 for a 21. One bit of useful info gained.
3) Great Forest Centipede - CR6 - Know Nature DC16 - Zeoll takes 10 for a 25. Two useful bits of info gained.
4) A Medusa - CR7 - Know Nature DC17 - Zeoll takes 10 for a 25. Two useful bits of info gained.
5) Two-Headed Troll - CR8? - Know Nature DC18? - Zeoll takes 10 for a 25. Two useful bits of info gained.
6) Giant Tarantula - CR8 - Know Nature DC18 - Zeoll takes 10 for a 25. Two useful bits of info gained.

Taking 10, Zeoll gains two bits of useful info for each of the monsters, though just one bit for the elemental.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:22/16/16 HP:57/57  d20+12=27 ; d20+4=10 ;
Thursday August 25th, 2011 8:19:28 PM

Beri listens to the response given by the elemental and shudders. Beri suddenly remembers that this person who brought them here mentioned breaking an unknown rule when they entered. He quickly tries to remember anything he can about rules for this type of combat.

The rogue then addresses the medusa (being the only creature he believes he communicate with), being careful not to look directly at her but instead respectfully bowing his head.

Excuse me 'mam, do you speak common? I don't suppose you know who it is that imprisoned you here, or for that matter exactly here is?

Counting to 6 [DM Jerry]
Thursday August 25th, 2011 9:52:09 PM

Zane reveals that he can't count. There are 6 monsters. :)

Restlin discovers that the cages are covered in magic. There is also some magic on the sewer entrance, though it is not on the surface, it seems deeper in.

Zeoll makes the DM mad by giving him lots of work and adding 15 min. to his post, but earns the information anyway. The behir is considered a huge magical beast and has an electrical breath weapon. There's not too much else to learn from the elemental, but he does remember that the elemental has some minor damage reduction. Zeoll doesn't remember anything else about this centipede. Must be a new variant. The two-headed troll has always been thought to be the offspring of an ettin and female troll. It obviously will regenerate. The tarantula has barbed hairs it can shoot. It also has tremorsense.

The Medusa spins towards Beri and hisses. She looks like she would say something, but then doesn't. She doesnt' even try her gaze on him. Instead she backs to the rear of her cage and takes up a defensive stance.

"Hmmm.... well, I say that if we don't have to fight them, we shouldn't. Let's go check out this arena, maybe we'll get a clue about what we need to do next in there."

Beltrin will walk through the cells and carefully examine the arena, especially the sewer like entrance. He uses detect magic as well.

Spotting all the beastiest in their cages, Kyan checks his quiver and frowns at the arrows remaining. He had a bit remaining, but he did not want to run out at a crucial moment. Perhaps he'd get the chance to test out his shiny new sword after all.

Also, he pokes Beltrin a few times with his CLW wand as the ragin' mage inspects the cells.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:22/16/16 HP:57/57  d100=17 ;

Beriothian watches a few of the members wander over toward the arena.

I'm ready if everyone else is, but I'd make sure you are ready for combat the moment we ante the arena. After all, that's what they tend to be built for.

The person who brought the group here appears to be big on "the rulz", so Beri isn't expecting an ambush. However, being that Beri still can't figure out what rule they broke earlier he readies himself to throw the colorful egg in his pocket (spell colorspray) should someone try to ambush the group.

The Arena/DM Buzz
Tuesday August 30th, 2011 12:14:35 AM

Ah, the challenge continues as the group takes a moment to survey their potential advasaries. Noticeable also is the lighting is bright and the air clear to see a set of five foot in width steps leading down into the fighting pit. It's cold hard surface will be unforgiving for those that might fall upon it. Those with hard boots hear the click of their heels across the floor as they continue to investigate the large room whose ceiling is unseen, like looking up into a sun. The adventurers hear the rustling's from the various monsters as each seem to want you to choose them, to compete against. Could it be because of their ferocious nature, is want to rend, destroy or consume you all or, perhaps, they are depending upon you to release them from whatever machinations of Malaphaz, even if through a short bout of pain to embrace death?

The all too familiar voice rings out in the large room as it explains the rules for the game.

Zha gamz vill begin vhen zou hav all vill chooz zhe location zen zhe arena zou dezire! Zhen speak vell zhe numberd zell zan the challanze vill ztart!

As the group begins to ponder their dilemma with positioning, Malaphaz continues, Chooz Vell zour opponet! Vey vill have the benefit of zher chozen environment vhen zhey zar realeazed upon vou!

The Maniacal laugh resonates around the room, as it seems, time is on your side and you may prepare as you desire. Yet, deep inside, you wonder..... how patient is your host.... really?

Zeoll is confused. "It wants us to choose the location, then the arrena, then the monsterr? We can choose the monsterr pretty easily. What location and what arrena can we choose?"

Zeoll looks up into the "sun" and shouts loudly, "What location and what arrena can we choose?"

Zeoll whispers to his friends, and speaks covertly, using his bluff skill to disguise his meaning. Bluff check 37 to pass the message, no roll needed to receive the message if you are the intended listener. "We might be able to get an advantage, forr example, by asking to fight the earrth elemental on the Plane of Air, orr the Medusa in utterrmost darrkness. Orr the trroll next to a lake of lava."

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:22/16/16 HP:57/57
Tuesday August 30th, 2011 7:19:12 PM

Beriothian eyes the troll, not sure at all about how efficient a flank would be on a creature with two heads. He doubts that splitting the creatures attention would have any real effect, however from that position he doubts troll could protect the numerous vitals on his back side, possibly leaving a sneak attack a viable (though risky) option. Either way, Beri agrees that this is a good choice for the group.

"Sounds good to me. I'll stay a few paces behind our big guys to start, any thoughts on if I should go ranged or melee for this?"

Zeoll (HP35 of 35, AC22/17)

Zeoll calls out: "Okay, we'll fight the trroll with two heads!"

Zeoll readies a Calm Emotions spell for the moment the troll enters the arena and is in range (150 feet). The spell affects all in a 20 ft radius, so it might affect both heads even if they are considered separately. The Will save DC is 19.

I am immune to spider poisons, but it sounds like you don't care for the tarantula. If no one objects, I will stand closest to the door. If the thing charges I can hopefully get an attack in before it reaches us. Zeoll, will this work with your plans, or should I just act as a wall (Total Defense)?

Wednesday August 31st, 2011 7:37:54 PM

[OOC: YES! Back on the grid, baby!]

[OOC: Kyan is placing himself dependent on Restlin, and Restlin has not posted yet. LOL!]

Well, Zeoll positions himself at 15-16-K-L, sort of in the middle of Bosk, Beltrin, and Zane. He urges Restlin to stay near him.

Note that because Zeoll has four legs, he gains a +4 to CMD vs trips and overruns, not added in above.

Zeoll kindly asks Bosk to act as a wall rather than a battering ram, at least initially. He adds, "We can fight the spiderr afterr we finish off the trroll, okay?"

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:22/16/16 HP:57/57
Wednesday August 31st, 2011 7:46:55 PM

Beriothian looks about as the party scrambles across the arena. Soon they start to spread a little farther than the rogue thinks they mean to, leaving huge distances between eachother. Even in a normal fight this would make the rogue nervous, but in an arena where the terrain will magically change there is a chance that members of the party will be completely cut off for a few rounds should the terrain be hard to cross. The rouge calls out to the group
You guys may want to stand a little closer so that we can better fight as a unit, remember that the terrain will likely change to something more fitting a troll in short order.

ooc: FYI Bosk and Zane, you posted at the same time and put yourselves fairly far apart for both being melee. I'll start behind Bosk (I'm not putting exact coordinates in case Bosk/Zane need to reposition )

As everyone has positioned themselves, the number five rings from the voice of the adventurers and it seems to echo around the room. Soon, a response.

"As vou vish!"

Suddenly, cell five disappears.

Then...

A dark shadow appears at the feet of our game pieces in the arena! Looking up into the still blinding light everyone can see a gargantuan cage of bars falling upon you all. Surely, this was a trap and the heroes of this story is about to be crushed by tons of steel, mercilessly.

A thunderous cacophony or rumbling is heard and felt as it lands in the arena, jarring the teeth and all but forcing you to flinch. In a split second, all is dark. The color of pitch would be cream colored in comparison to the inky blackness that has just enveloped you. The only thing that reassures you all (except Bosk), you're not all dead is the fact you have been to the Lands of Rest and, the smell of damp earth pops you in the nose. The sounds of water dripping down cavern walls and the unseen creature scream a war cry before it engages.

ooc: Please, do not post! Beriothian has been placed randomly on the map. Part two will be the end results of it's attack phase and I will send out the map for the rest of you to respond to.

Beri said he was positioning himself behind Bosk in his last post, just didn't give exact coordinates in case Bosk moved, but was still going to be behind him wherever he ended up.

DM Buzz. I understand my friend, but where is "behind" Bosk? He didn't tell me which direction he is facing and he is standing in the middle of the room. Luckily, Beri is not the immediate target and that is only because their primary target is of those that are large size. Please everyone,learn from this knowing, it could have been much worse. :)

Everyone Highlight to display spoiler: { All characters except Bosk is considered Blinded. I looked over character sheets and didn't see any notes on weapons that glowed and since it is optional, I would always assume you would not have that addition on your weapon as there are so many other resources available then that. If you want your weapon to glow, please add that to your character sheet after this battle. I also saw no other forms of light listed in spells active.}

Bosk Highlight to display spoiler: {opens his eyes and with the powers of the divine notices the group is in a large cavern. stalagmites and stalactites form a column here and there as the sounds of the dripping water is seen to have created these beautiful, natural sculptures. As if randomly, the giant Two Headed Troll appears off by himself (S,T/23,24, near the wall, between you, Beriothian and Zane. With no light source, you are the only one that can see him and as he looks around, he apparently takes a second to gauge his opponents. It notices you make eye contact and it knows you can see him, so both heads roar as he charges toward Zane, who appears to not have the same vision and claws savagely at the monk.}

Charge attack on Zane from two headed troll. I am allowing two standard attacks, one for each head as a full round action. I am not sure if Zane has the defenses necessary to overcome being "blind", not being able to see, so if any of these modifiers need to be adjusted, we can do that during the player round.

Bosk can see at the edge of his vision what is happening to Zane Highlight to display spoiler: {Not being able to see leaves one vulnerable when normally, one is not. You hear the beast before it rips into your flesh with both claws which also causes a "rending" effect as your skin and muscles are ripped open by the sharp, filthy claws.}

A sickening sound fills the air soon after the war cry and Zane is damaged while Blinded by attacks hitting AC 24 and 28 doing 12 damage and 14 damage. The cumulative attacks rends for an additional 11 damage for a total of 37 damage.

The two headed troll is now vulnerable to attacks having a -2 to AC from the charge. The DM forgot to add the +2 from the charge in the previous post.

Unless a light source is used, the characters (except Bosk) are hindered by movement conditions listed below. Map coming this afternoon, but you can use the old one as parameters. There are a couple of obstacles here and there, but it shouldn't make that big a difference in your actions, so I'm not drawing them out.

Blinded: The creature cannot see. It takes a --2 penalty to Armor Class, loses its Dexterity bonus to AC (if any), and takes a --4 penalty on most Strength- and Dexterity-based skill checks and on opposed Perception skill checks. All checks and activities that rely on vision (such as reading and Perception checks based on sight) automatically fail. All opponents are considered to have total concealment (50% miss chance) against the blinded character. Blind creatures must make a DC 10 Acrobatics skill check to move faster than half speed. Creatures that fail this check fall prone. Characters who remain blinded for a long time grow accustomed to these drawbacks and can overcome some of them.

Zeoll (HP35 of 35, AC22, CMD17)  d20+15=20 ;
Thursday September 1st, 2011 4:48:22 PM

Zeoll makes a Perception check to get a sense of where the enemy is. He gains a +2 from heroism and another +2 from his elf vision. Since he has his shield in one hand and is using his other hand to cast, I'm assuming he cannot use his lens of detection (it has a handle). His Perception check, at +15, is a 20.

The Perception DC to hear people in battle is -10 (per the Stealth skill description). Per the Darkness rules ...
A creature blinded by darkness can make a Perception check as a free action each round in order to locate foes (DC equal to opponents' Stealth checks). A successful check lets a blinded character hear an unseen creature "over there somewhere." It's almost impossible to pinpoint the location of an unseen creature. A Perception check that beats the DC by 20 reveals the unseen creature's square (but the unseen creature still has total concealment from the blinded creature).

So to pinpoint combatants in battle is a DC-10 check that you have to beat by 20, so it is a DC10 check to pinpoint combatants. Zeoll rolled a 20, so even with the Perception distance modifier, he can pinpoint the troll's location up to 100 feet away.

Zeoll calls out to his friends, "I'm trrying to Calm it down! If it stops attacking, leave it be! If you arre affected, withdrraw!"

If Zeoll thinks the troll is 30 feet from him or closer, he will step back ten or 20 feet slowly (moving at half speed). If it is 30 to 50 feet away, he'll stay put. If it is farther than 50 feet away, he'll walk slowly 20 feet toward it.

So having a decent idea of where to cast, Zeoll casts his Calm Emotions spell. The spell is an "Area" spell (Spread, to be precise), not "Target" -- so per the magic rules, Zeoll does not have to see the troll to affect it -- he just has to catch it in the 20 ft radius area spread (which, as a spread, can go around corners). Zeoll does his best to put the spell so that the troll will be affected.

The will save DC on the Calm Emotions is a 19.

Curses! I should have known that a troll's preferred environment would be dark! Beltrin casts a spell trying to illuminate the troll and moves to a more defensible location.

---------------------------------------
Beltrin will cast Dancing Lights to try to illuminate the troll's location. Perception check 12 to target the spell, range is 150 feet, ideally he'd center it at H20. The spell gives normal light in a 20' radius and dim light for an additional 20' beyond that.

He'll then move at regular speed closer to the fray (Acrobatics check 21) ending at I15. Probably closer than he wants to be to the troll, but hey he rolled a 12 on the perception check... he doesn't really know where it is.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:22/16/16 HP:57/57
Thursday September 1st, 2011 9:22:48 PM

Beriothian looks up to find a massive cage plummeting toward them. Had the Iron Adventurers unwittingly broken another unwritten rule and as a result sprung this trap? Well, it's going to take more than some crazy falling cage trap to get the drop on this seasoned rogue.

The elf immediately dives to the side and tumbles away from the spot the cage appears to be heading for. As his body somersaults across the ground everything suddenly goes dark. His lithe frame starts to bounce off course as the flat ground suddenly transforms beneath him into something dirty and uneven.

Beri pushes his goggles away, assuming they must have become caked in mud as he tumbled, but the blackness remains in front of him.
The terrain has changed, the battle must already be starting. It seems that trolls have dark vision, I must remember that in the future. I must also remember to smack the person who "spoke well the numbered cell" before everyone had their weapons drawn.

As Beri struggles to regain his bearing his keen elven ears pick up the dull thud of his massive friends footsteps.
Ah, so I am a ways behind Bosk. This battle will be much less dangerous with my trusted friend standing between me and that two headed monstrosity.

Suddenly there is a war cry from next to Bosk, and Zane bellows out in anguish. Had Zane gotten hit in the cross fire between Bosk and the...
By the shifting dice of Ward! That wasn't Bosk's footsteps, it was the infernal troll the whole time!

The cage... the blackness... the changing floor. Despite his best efforts it seems that their host got the drop of the rouge after all. Frustration fills the rogue, after all his talk about keeping close to eachother why had he fled so far from Bosk? The troll could have easily landed next to Beri all by himself instead of in reach of the others. Even if the troll had landed behind the the rogue while his back was turned wouldn't he still be better off with the taur within arms reach to aid or heal him?

The arena starts to light up as the Iron Adventurers activate a variety of spells. With his head now propperly oriented again Beri composes himself. He speaks the command word "Shibboleet", and the goggles on his forhead activate their light spell (cl3). He takes a deep breath and think carefully of his next move when he sees Restlin illuminate his dagger.

Beri makes his way to Restlin, moving in almost exactly a north western direction for 30 feet (y-17). Of course, at this point it is unclear which direction true north is, so Beri clarifies in his head that the wall behind Restlin is north. When he reaches that spot he stops and faces west, west being relative to what he arbitrarily designated north. Should there be anything he missed that causes his movement to be impeded, Beri plans to move as close to his intended spot as possible, with a preference for moving an extra step north instead of west.

His immediate instinct is to heal his fellow taur, but he realizes he will never make it there in time (I rolled before realizing Zane was more than 30ft away). Monster attacks Round 2/DM Buzz
Monday September 5th, 2011 10:23:51 AM

Zeoll using superior skills of perception locates the enemy and attempts to calm the savage creature before it can devour the newest member of the Iron Adventurers, right before their....ears!

Beltrin is caught slightly off guard by the immediate darkness that enveloped the group and he attempts to light an area somewhere in front of him. He knows the battle is more then twenty feet away, so he casts his spell, to cover the area beyond that. Highlight to display spoiler: {Sorry, but your idea spot is a small area in the vast dark cavern where you all are. Since you can't pin point the battle, I would assume you would still cast the spell somewhere.}

Restlin forgot about the troll ecology and is also caught unprepared. Casting a quick spell on an object, his first thought is to give light to his friends, at the least.

Zane can feel the intense agony of having living flesh ripped from ones body. After casting a spell, he makes a feeble attempt at escape. Not being able to move properly, having his left pectoralis major muscle and part of his biceps brachii ripped from his body. Through intense training and mental concentration, he will not be hindered in battle from the injury, but it's going to hurt like a Mudtown storm until it is healed. Highlight to display spoiler: { Please, always give end coordinates after you make movements! You might not like where I place you if you leave it to me!}

Beriothian is disgruntled at the magic of the arena. Did it move him from where he wanted to be? Does Malaphaz have something against Elven Rogues? Hmmm, perhaps Malaphaz likes Elven Rogues and placed him in a position out of harms way? Regardless, he can keep guessing, because all of the characters had to pronounce the number five to summon the cell. Highlight to display spoiler: { Yes, you have a DM that has a habit of running modules way longer then they are supposed to run. Not on this one. We are moving along according to schedule, so please, the next time I ask for you to place yourselves, do so, or I will roll randomly again. Thank you.}

Bosk can do nothing at first, except watch in horror, a fellow taur ripped up and almost eaten alive in front of him. All he can do is hope the bard can calm the creature before he has to charge into the creature to attack.

Kyan is blinded by the dark when he realizes to late he can not see across the artificial cavern. He hears the bards words and waits for results of the performance.

The two headed troll enjoys a brief snack as it watches Zane stumble away. It looks around the natural looking chamber and disappears into the darkness of other parts of the room. Only Bosk has any chance to see him on a regular basis as he moves about the room waiting for the effects of the charm to wear off.

We are still in combat rounds. I will send out a map this afternoon with the areas that have some light available and once the group is prepared to attack the creature or try something else, I will give him new coordinates. I need to look for a rule about using Darkvision when light is around. I'm not sure on a couple of things. Happy labor Day everyone!

"I agree, let's get a better defensive position established. Bosk, can you see that thing out there? I'll try to spotlight it with my spell." Beltrin moves to the south, meanwhile sending his magical globes out searching for the troll.

------------------------------------
I don't think that the version of the map with Zane's light spell made it through, but I figure that it will just be a 20' radius centered on Zane's previous location.

Beltrin will move south to H20 and try to find the troll with the dancing lights spell. If Bosk can point out a general location, he'll send them that way. Otherwise, he'll just sweep in arcs from south to north (100' of movement for the lights per round). If he finds the troll, he'll try to follow him with the dancing lights spell for the rest of its duration.

Also, the rule for animal companions being handled as a free action is under the Link ability for animal companions:

He'll follow Kyan, figuring he needs to head in that direction anyway. "Besides," he mutters to himself, "someone has to protect this poor cat he brought with us." He makes his way to M11 where his dagger landed and retrieves it. He'll make sure his wand is ready and wait for an opening to use it...

Hi all, you should all now have a map, with coordinates available. Please give me character squares for your size and location on the map, so we may continue.

At least five minutes has passed since your last battle after searching the coffins and continuing forward, but if you want to use up more time then that, you may.
Thank you...

So, five minutes, six rounds rounds after positioning yourselves in the arena.

Monster attacks Round 3/DM Buzz  d20=13 ;
Wednesday September 7th, 2011 11:21:05 AM

Zeoll takes command of the situation accentuating what needs to be done, to survive this encounter, while maintaining concentration of his spell. It appears, the two headed troll does not speak common.

Kyan gives Azrael a command and while repositioning pulls something from his pack and prepares it for the next round. Azrael's ears are back as it trys to follow the sounds in the dark and positions itself to spring if necessary.

Beltrin gets closer to the others, while sweeping along the southern wall with dim light, his Dancing Lights spell, the full range for this round.

Zane doesn't really feel much like fighting right now, but the healing from the fellow minotaur is most welcome. He moves off into the corner of the large cavern, with his back to the wall. The heal spell caused some of the muscle to regrow and eventually, if there is ever any natural healing, a real pretty scar is sure to remain.

Restlin may have thought this battle would be much easier then it has been, but sometimes, eighteen seconds can be an eternity. Following the ranger, he notices the Lynx, close on his heels, with it's ears, eyes and whiskers twitching nervously.

Bosk gets a chance to heal the monk before he moves off and away to the corner. He can not see the troll in the room. Highlight to display spoiler: {Congratulations man! Now, let the stress begin! Let me know if you need anything.}

Beriothian does not want to be off in the middle of the room with an unseen troll lurking somewhere around. He moves closer to the band, knowing there is safety in numbers. Very close numbers.

The troll is unseen at the moment and any chance of hearing his exact location will be hindered by distance.

Monster attacks Round 4/DM Buzz  d100=23 ;
Thursday September 8th, 2011 8:26:20 PM

Zeoll takes the time to concentrate on his spell as he moves a few feet closer to the corner.

Kyan spreads the wealth, seeing that light is a valued treasure at the moment, while Azrael maintains the steady watch of protecting another in the pride.

Beltrin puts the light on the two headed troll and it snarls!It's location was AK,AL/26,27. He attempts to talk some sense into it.

Zane fires his light spell against the far wall and it shatters, ending the spell. He prepares another missile for next round. 50% chance to break, DM rolled 23.Highlight to display spoiler: {Can only cast one spell per round.}

Bosk takes a couple of steps forward twenty feet and can see the troll with the dancing lights spell on him.

Beriothian wants someone watching his back as well. Using a very rarely used item seldom seen in the Wold, this item disappears in his hands as he takes the magical piece of paper and with expert hands, forms a small hound, that should appear next round. Highlight to display spoiler: {Please give me stats on the animal like Azrael in Kyan's header. Thank you.}

Restlin knows how sneaky these creatures can be and watches the rear, just in case.

The troll runs forward with confidence and looks around the room. Even though it seems somewhat "calmed" at the moment, clearly, he is an intimidating sight to behold. It seems interested in the fact, you can speak with it. It simply says, with both heads, in a language Beltrin seems to understand. Highlight to display spoiler: {[left] "Me tinks, you more worried about you dying. [right] "How you help escape?"}

The troll seems to ignore everyone except, one head is on Bosk as the other now focuses on Beltrin.

Zane pulls out another arrow, lights it up, then instead of shooting it across the room, he'll throw it across, hopefully it will just land and slide a bit, not shatter this time. He aims for 5,AI with his toss. rolled a 7, so..... it went somewhere tho, with a light spell on it.

If Zeoll is within 75 feet of the troll

Zeoll moves up to 40 ft until he is within 35 feet of the troll. Then he says, "Bosk, Beltrrin! Let me know if we need to attack." Then he readies a standard action, triggered by either the troll attacking or Bosk or Beltrin giving the word to attack it. His readied action is to cast [link href="http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/spells/hideousLaughter.html"]Hideous Laughter on the troll. The Will save DC is 18, and the troll gets a +4 on the save.

Kyan hustles over to protect the wizard and his own friend Azrael

Zeoll maintains the spell, with the knowledge it is still active. Advice from the wise can be very important.

Restlin is glad for the bards quick spell and waits for the inevitable.

Bosk had the misfortune of watching the incredible damage the troll is capable of...and it didn't even get a chance to clamp down with it's enormous, yellow fanged heads. He prepares for the worst.

Beriothian has a new companion appear. He is a cute dog, with tail wagging as he rubs against his new master for a quick scritch. Around his neck is a golden chain and a large bone shaped tag hangs over his chest adding a +1 to the summoned animals armor class. Written in common is the name "Woldo". They both move closer to the huge minotaur.

Beltrin, it seems, has no intention of letting this completely evil creature escape off to somewhere, to cause all kinds of havoc and mayhem. At least, that is the impression given, when he offers the troll a chance to live, but is found lying.

Zane casts a spell on an arrow and tosses it out to J/20, in order to bring to light the troll, fully. It isn't long before he realizes, the Calm Emotions effect he is under, is now gone.Highlight to display spoiler: {This is similar to what happened with Restlin a few rounds ago. At least if someone engages the troll, there is no miss %, with the move action toss.}

The giant two headed troll didn't know it was going to die today until the negotiator confirms it in his voice. (Sense Motive from previous post) His body swells and then takes a five foot step closer, before he launches himself at Bosks huge, blurry body.

The troll savagely rips into the enormous hero and soon Bosk experiences exactly what Zane went through. Wardd was on the good guys side today as the primary attacks of the creature lands, the long filthy claws, already red from it's previous victim digs deep through the articulations of the Sateelgrass armor. They pierce deep into the rib cage,, around the lungs, sliding by vital organs. It doesn't seem to do near as much damage as seen before, yet, with a flick of the trolls wrists, the tearing on the inside is noticeable when it retracts it's claws for the bites that miss and hit, when blood gushes from the torso of the blurred creature. Thankfully, Bosk prepared well enough that the last savage bite, that would have landed, also misses.

Troll hits twice doing 9 damage and 9 damage plus a rend for 9 damage for a total of 27 damage. Bosk, please double check your current armor class to see if your new size is reflected, thank you.

Double checking map. That doesn't mean it will be accurate though, there is a lot going on.

From the previous round..

A Glitterdust spell from Beltrin catches the creature unprepared and it becomes blinded, yet, it knows what it last saw and the stench of Minotaur is still near. Being blinded, all the attacks that hit, still hit and one of the hits that missed, missed.... Hmmmm, although that is true, it doesn't sound right.

For round 6

Zeoll can't speak giantish, so he can't tell the creature a joke, so instead, he capers about in a slap stick manner while he casts a spell and hopes it is effective.

Kyan's arrow sinks into the monsters flesh.

Beriothian realizes, the troll could have got attacks of opportunity on the rogue, if he wasn't lauging so hard. The wounds created leaves large gouges in it's flesh.

Zane fires an arrow and it sinks into the tough flesh. Highlight to display spoiler: {Sorry, I rolled damage for you because I had to move it along. Nice roll! :)}

Beltrin holds an action for this round and next round too, since the narrator forgot his spell last round. He takes some comfort in the fact, he is not completely neglected and his forgotten spell did work.

Restlin says a command word and a dark green blob hits the troll in the side, causing more laughter.

Bosk takes full advantage of the monster rolling around on the ground, blinded and prone. Every attack hits, ending the trolls laughter, for now

121 damage taken, 5 of that acid.

The map is sent!

Beriothian weaves his hands in and out of the fire, acid, and assortment of weapons raining down on the troll, and does his best to bind the creatures hands. In the end the knots aren't real pretty, but they should buy the group some time should the fight not be over.
I would have nothing against taking the troll prisoner, but I don't think the the troll would be willing to surrender peacefully.

Woldo glances around apprehensivly, but it is not in the sweet dog's nature to tear into an unconcious creature, at least not one that would be as un-tasty as a troll. Instead the dog just sits and growls, and readies to tackle (trip) the troll should he try to rise again.

Friday September 16th, 2011 12:36:46 PM

ooc; Really sick today so quick post. Sorry it's not full of the detail I would have liked...

The troll could still regenerate and it is seen to do so. Where heads and arms have been removed, little nubs sprout up to take there place. No worry though, for the troll, after taking all the damage after it was unconcious that it had, will take many rounds to be dangerous again.

During the mutilation process however, a glint of gold is seen in the belly of the beast when it was tore open.

Zeoll says, "Accorrding to a famous barrd, if it werre done, 'twerre best done quickly. Let's dispatch this creature post haste."

Monday September 19th, 2011 1:26:07 AM

Beriothian's eye is drawn to the out of place gold. Could this perhaps be a key to one of the keyholes they saw earlier, or some fiendish trap set before him. At the moment this glimmer is of far more concern than the unconscious troll, and the elf tries to gauge what exactly it is that he sees.

perception = 25 on the glint of gold (27 when detecting a trap).

Kyan (Jon) AC:19/13/16 HP: 57/57 CMD: 23 || Azrael 17 HP, AC: 20/17/13 CMD: 19  d20+11=23 ;
Monday September 19th, 2011 8:25:29 AM

Question: Is the troll officially dead now? I saw the rules board thing about fire/acid damage stopping regeneration and didn't it take some last round after being chopped up? Either way...

Sheathg in his sword and drawing the dagger from his belt, the ranger crouches next to the troll to examine its stomach with Beri (Perception 23). If there is no sign of traps and Beri doesn't alert him to any, he'll use his knife to gut the troll like a deer.

One way out/DM Buzz
Monday September 19th, 2011 11:52:53 AM

The bard mentions, a single torch, applied to the beast, is enough to ease it's suffering. The regeneration ceases as does all the other life functions of the beast.

The rogue of the party has keen senses when it comes to perception and all he can tell is, the inside of a troll stinks much worse then the outside of a troll. The glint of gold is evident however, for it is not a raw mineral, but smooth and polished. Easily seen with all the light now available.

Then the ranger comes in, cleared of any signs of mechanical nature. When he dips his dagger into the beasts belly, to fully examine the nasty creature, he disturbs an enormous tape worm that had been starving in the creatures belly for an untold time. It wraps itself around the dagger first, then up the arm, it spins around, wrapping around the head and torso of the one who disturbed its habitat.

Fortunately, this creature is a parasite. It eats the digestive remains of it's host, so he will not be eaten alive. After removing the completely gross, if not harmless aggressor, one feels like a bath is definitely in order.

A large, one foot long golden key is removed from the trolls belly soon after the tape worm is removed from the ranger and, the group then feels a great weight removed from their shoulders. They are no longer in the arena, but in cage #5 off to the side. The troll is no where to be seen. Wounds remain, but no blood is seen around you, except for what might be currently dripping on the floor. At the back of the cage, is an elaborately decorated key hole, much smaller then the key you found in the troll, but then, looking at the golden key, it is still golden, but also, much smaller then when you retrieved it.

Kyan (Jon) AC:19/13/16 HP: 57/57 CMD: 23 || Azrael 17 HP, AC: 20/17/13 CMD: 19  d20+11=21 ;

"Arrgh!" Kyan exclaims as the tapeworm winds itself up his knife and arm to twirl around his body. With his other hand he reaches up to grab hold of the end around his head and starts to unwind the thing from him through by brute force. Once he's able to get a few feet free he'll reach up with the worm covered arm and start sawing at the other end of the worm with his worm covered knife, looking to cut the thing away.

Once freed from the horrid thing, Kyan will clean his knife on his pant leg and wave Azrael over, ""Azrael, come here... but do NOT eat that." before going to gather his bow and torch while the key is removed from the carcass.

He blinks as they're suddenly no longer in the arena, but now in the cage and draws his sword by reflex, looking around the cell. (Perception: 21)

The horned cleric looks around, relieved to no longer have the troll tearing into him.
Well, that could have gone much worse. I would suggest we heal ourselves before anything else, there is a chance that this door is locked for a reason.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:22/16/16 HP:57/57  d20+12=18 ;
Tuesday September 20th, 2011 12:04:27 AM

Beriothian thanks Woldo for his faithful service, one couldn't have asked for a better companion. He reaches down and rubs the dogs belly as the dog starts to fade back to where ever he had been called from. Looking around, Beri gathers himself and checks his equipment. The door before them intrigues the rogue, as any lock is a puzzle that entices the elf.

Considering we were given a key my guess is that this door isn't trapped... beyond being guarded by monsters of course. Perhaps an examination of the door will give us some clue as to what's behind it though. And I agree with Bosk, I don't know what's behind this door but it does make sense to make sure we tend to our wounds before continuing.

perception (examine door) = d20+12=18 (20 on traps)

Tuesday September 20th, 2011 5:48:14 PM

All spells that are area effect spells, like the Dancing Lights spell and the spells cast on daggers and arrows are now gone, but personal spells are still in effect.

The rope is recovered easily, it laying looped up near someone's feet, a tangle of efficient knots.

The key is placed in the key hole and when turned, the cage disappears completely and the group is standing in now a blank spot where the cage used to be.

There is a flash of light near the center of the arena. The golden round center now shows glyphs in the language of old Hook. They are the numbers one through six, placed in a circular pattern. Across from the one, is the number four. Across from the two is the now blank space that was number five, but that sigil is missing. Across from the three is the number six.

The cold laugh returns, "Ah ha ha ha ha! Thatz vas marvalous! Zuch daring! Zuch teamzwork! Clearly, I haz chozen correctly ze proper group to challenge!"

Bosk thanks Kyan for healing his wounds, grateful to not have to face the next challenge is such poor shape. As Zane is getting healed for the year the cleric recasts guidance on himself.
I'm afraid I my clerical training has offered little in the way of these creatures, my specialty is combating the undead. I will default to the groups decision....I am immune to spider poison, if that helps any, and it sounds like the medusa would be a risky choice. I must admit though, I wonder if you behead her whether the head retains its properties. Imagine attaching it to your armor and putting a cloth over it. Battle starts and you remove the cloth, your opponents now must fight you with out looking at your torso.

Zane Stormfront AC 24 CMD 21 HP 46/50
Wednesday September 21st, 2011 1:41:40 AM

Zane says, "Thank you, Kyan. That damn critter really laid me open,"
He thinks over the other opponents and has a few comments about each....
"The reptile I have no idea about at all, The Elemental, I expect to be a cave system or a field of boulders. The Bug will be a room of trees and it can probably climb them as well. The next one will most likely be an open field with the stone statues of it's past victories. The spider will most likely be a room full of webs, which will be free to act in them, while we are hindered.
I'm of a mind to try the Bug with the trees, but that's my opinion and my best guesses of what we will encounter once it starts. I also suggest we start all near each other, not scattered if at all possible."

DM Buzz: Um, Zane, how in the world are you this knowledgeable about the beasts in question, without a single Knowledge or skill check?

Was using common sense, from the description. Hearing tales of things, and no, I don't look up monsters unless rolls are made. ex. spiders use webs to trap food, see that with small spiders and flies. an Earth elemental would most likely be surrounded by rocks. notice the lizard and other strange thing got no guess, because Zane has no idea, and the Medusa, rumors that it turns people to stone, and other characters comments made a obvious deduction that it would want an open area, so foes had no place to hide in cover. if it's wrong to use common sense thoughts, then let me know.

[OOC: LOL! Did I put "Zane" at the top of my last post? I meant "Zeoll"! Silly me!]

Knowledge checks:

Know Nature +15 = 25

Know Arcana +13 = 26

Know Geog +11 = 17

Know Planes +11 = 26

Know Local +11 = 17

Know All Others +7 = 12, 22, 20

Zeoll shares all he can deduce and recall with his comrades in arms. He wonders what attack capabilities the medusa has beyond turning those who look upon her to stone. And if the spider can create webs.

"The spiderr sounds good, given Bosk's immunity. Also, I could cast Obscurring Mist, we can all just close ourr eyes, then we fight the medusa blind."

[OOC: Added six rounds to spell durations for troll disposal and key turning.]

Hmmm.... if you're right and that was only the first challenge, then we're going to have to fight two more of these monsters. I think that we should stay away from the medusa and the behir. Zeoll, if you have any more mind-controlling spells, we could try that on the elemental, otherwise, I say that we stick with the spider, since at least Bosk has an advantage over it. But we should make the decision quickly, before all of our spells wear off.

DM Buzz asks for a Spellcraft DC 15:Highlight to display spoiler: { Only personal spells will remain with the magical transition. Anything considered an area effect spell, even a Protection from Evil 10'R would be removed. Perhaps something more mundane will not be dispelled?}

Time and a half/DM Buzz

The group remembers the bard characterizing the creatures from before the troll was summoned. It is quite evident now, that he was correct on the trolls abilities. In this short amount of time, he can't discern without some very special powers, any other qualities.

"The behir is considered a huge magical beast and has an electrical breath weapon. It also has tremorsense."

Twenty rounds has now elapsed, eleven of which could be spent on healing from wands or other wise. Don't forget to reroll 1's

In that amount of time, the group can discuss their next actions and prepare. The narrator is ready and the group has by Friday to decide on a new cell and a map location. He doesn't think he can keep Malaphaz at bay forever.

The owner of this demiplane is want for more sport, now!

[OOC: Hey wait! 20 rounds, oh kindly DM? It was just 11 rounds a post ago! How did we just waste 9 rounds? So confused! Knowledge checks generally take no time at all, right?]

Zeoll feels that time is slipping away. "Let's stay close togetherr and pick the spiderr, okay? Bosk, you'rre the spiderr guy. Call it!"

Note to DM: With all that time spent doing cures, could Zeoll have cast a spell back then? He would like to have cast Taur's Try (minotaur).

He digs out and drinks his vial of anti-toxin.

ooc: The kindly DM figures you guys will likely take a couple of minutes to talk anyway, in fact I could speculate it would take much longer then two minutes to really plan something out in detail, which you all have the opportunity to do and that two minutes is quite a gift to save some of your spells.

Other spells then healing can be cast as well.

ooc: Is that 20 rounds since the fight began or since the fight ended?

Bosk nods, but waits until the group is ready to call anything out. If it is as Zaneoll says, we should try to make sure we can burn or cut down any webs that arrive. Is anyone able to do that? I also think anyone with a ranged weapon should have it handy, in case the thing begins climbing trees. Does anyone know of a possible weakness this thing might have? As for positioning, I suggest we move a little closer together this time.

"I agree.. go with the spider. If Bosk can keep it and it's poison busy, the rest of us can try to put it down with arrows... Staying together this time would be a good idea as well."

DM Buzz: I guess I could send out a blank map. I had assumed, any of the others could give you an idea of where to stand. :)

Kyan will position himself so that Restlin is between him and Azrael once again... and since Restlin is "out" for a bit, they'll all be standing so that Bosk is between them and the center of the arena.

All this "Joe next to Sally between Mark and Gothmog" stuff is confusing Zeoll. Well. It is confusing his player.

Zeoll places himself dead center at S-T-14-15. He motions all his friends to gather nearby. He calls out, "Cell 6 - A Giant Tarrantula."

OOC: Based on the Hook City post of Aug 23. Also, re-e-mailed the map out.
