DMSteveK - The Fleet Departs
Wednesday August 31st, 2011 4:02:47 PM

The mermaid smiiles shyly at Crag and Lemick, and slips beneath the waters, followed by the merman.

Sailors and heroes are not as drunk as expected when they return to the SeaSprite. So too, nothing else comes of the mysterious, angry stranger.

And dawn comes soon enough.

First call of a bosun is soon echoed from navigators, captains, and sailing masters, all calling in voices harsh and profane to have sailors active and working. Within the hour, hammocks are stowed, ropes coiled and belaying pins tightened down. Great sheets of canvas billow and boom in the salty air as the first of the great ships begin to move.

It is the flag ship, a three masted Carrack with Fixers lining the rail. Pennants stream in the wind as a silver, clarion horn calls out the messge: Fleet Away! Immediately, the other ships all weigh anchor and begin gliding through the calm harbor waters, takcing towards the harbor entrance.

From the docks, a waiting and expectant crowd bursts into cheers. Flags Wave! Flowers are thrown! Pretty girls of all ages blow kisses! Young men run out on the harbor breaker, waving hats and shouting luck to the ships; The great endaevor is on the way!

Other ships take up the calls, shouting at the crowd, playing instruments, throwing sparkling magic and alchemical solutions in the air. Artus Morindim is busy blistering a luckless sailor for coiling a rope counterclockwise and takes no notice of the frivolity of other ships. Perhaps that sort of display is for the passengers?

Harvest Moon (AC17/T17/F14; HP10/10; CMD 18) - Al
Wednesday August 31st, 2011 5:54:22 PM

Harvest Moon smiles and waves back at the many people who have come to see off the many boats that are called "a fleet". The people crowd the docks like many ants. It is startling to see so many people. Even after her visit to Plateau City, it is a thing of wonder to Harvest Moon that so many people can come together at once.

There is one thing in particular that Harvest Moon notes from observing the sailors at their work. They tie many things to other things. They make many things secure before leaving them. This was puzzling until it occurred to Harvest Moon that this very big boat may not be so different than the smaller boats that she has seen. At least no different in the sense that should something fall or slide off of the boat, that thing would be lost forever in the depths of the water.

After this realization, she searches the length of the boat for places to which she might secure her polearm.

Crag gives a "harumph" under his breath as he sees all the people waving good-bye, wondering why the big fanfare for people leaving. If anything they should be cheering a returning sailor.

The Dwarfs contemplations quickly cease as the ship begins moving, and the solid ground he is used to standing on doesn't feel quite so solid. He grabs onto the nearest secure object and hangs on, concerned about bouncing off the ship. After a few moments, he looks toward the rail as his stomach gets a bit queasy and wonders if it best to vomit over the side and try not to fall in, or do it here and have to clean it up when the angry little Artus has a fit. "This is why Dwarves don't sail" he thinks to himself. "Rock is better for standing on. Everyone knows that."

He begins to fill his head with images of monsters to kill and enemies to battle. He turns his head back towards the ship. With Wardd's blessing, they might just survive this place, Rum.

DMSteveK - On the Seas
Thursday September 1st, 2011 2:23:33 PM

Harvest finds a good place along a gunwale to lash her polearm down. A sailor shows her a knot that will stay tight but will quick release if another end is pulled. "We use 'em all the time for lashin's, miss", the young man says while knuckling his forelock.

At the harbor markers, a stiff wind makes canvas boom and the SeaSprite begins to gain speed. Soon the sloop-rigged ship is listing at a 25 degree angle to port and a frothy wake sprays the deck when a cross wave slams into the side. Sailors whoop in excitement, glad to be out on such a glorious day and going on such an exciting ride from the wind. Artus stands on a box near the tiller where another sailor actually steers the ship. "Wes'Sou'Wes!", he shouts exultantly at Barratore and anyone else on the Quarterdeck as the light of the morning sun sparkles behind the ship. "Couldn't ask for a better omen to start out!" And the little man laughs along with his crew.

It takes a couple of hours for the WLA team (other than Gerox) to get some semblance of sea-legs, but by the noon meal, they can be confident enough about walking up and down the tilting deck of a ship in fair seas without falling overboard. The noon meal is grilled fish and asparagus with fresh bread cooked on a small charcoal grill carefully tended near the bows. The wind blows the smoke forward and away from the boat and crew.

In the course of the morning, the heroes have been able to familiarize themselves with the SeaSprite, in and out (see link About SeaSprite), and are confident enough about getting to the necessary areas of the boat.

Looking about the sea, the WLAers can look at the other ships. There are three 200 footers so similar to the flagship that they must all be 3-masted Carracks. These are the largest ships, with high fore- and aft-castles bristling with ballista and catapults and capable of fighting off the largest of creatures. Two slightly smaller and faster 3-masted Drommonds also glide within sight; distinctive by only having a raised Quarterdeck in the aft of the ship and no raised forecastle. Four more large ships with but a single mast wallow in the seas about the Drommonds and Carracks. One of the sailors call them Cogs. "Good, solid merchant ships they be, plenty of room for cargoes, just not very fast or maneuverable", he says.

But there are other ships about; a couple more sloops like the SeaSprite, a couple Ketch-rigged sleek clippers or double-masted Barks. From the top of a wave, the WLAers can see at least 15 ships in sight, which is many more than the promised Fixer Fleet number of TEN...

Harvest Moon (AC17/T17/F14; HP10/10; CMD 18) - Al  d20+2=14 ;
Thursday September 1st, 2011 4:27:34 PM

Harvest Moon has a rope of her own. It is a fine thing, given to her by Thelonious just before he sent her off to Plateau City to find the Woldian League.

"The utility of a rope lies in its flexibility, Harvest. It can bind. It can connect. It can support. It can even strike. This coil is deceptively solid, and has a considerable heft."

"The flexibility of the rope is evident in its shape, and the many shapes that it can take on. You can learn a great many things from rope, Harvest. All things can be your teacher."
She had not completely understood his meaning at the time. Truth be told, though she remembers the words, they still sound mysterious and unknowable to her even yet.

But here is a new use for her rope, and Harvest Moon takes to the tying of knots with gusto. Everywhere, she ties things to other things. She even ties her arm to a rail through the use of one hand and her teeth.

Hours pass for Harvest Moon, absorbed in such practice.

Lemick finds himself watching as the shore slowly disappears, the harbor now a memory. He takes in the frsh salty air and decides it's not as bad as he thought. His first real sent of salt air had been at the inn, with the slight stench of rotting fish behind it.

While steady, surely no speed can be done on this type of floor. His armor is secured in his bunking area, so should unsteadiness win, he shouldn't sink like a rock.

He watches the crew intently, studying their movements, glances and signals. Not so much to learn them, but to see if one seems suspicious. After lunch he sits on the main deck, out of the way and meditates to the sound of being surrounded by water and the wind.

Tom spends his day getting used to the ebb and flow of the sea. After he gets his sea legs, he takes a good hour to practice his aim against the rolling waves.

He also takes a moment to speak to one of the officers when they have a moment.
"Our party is stout in a fight, but we've got no head around what works best on a ship. If it comes to battle, what do you need us to be doing?"

When the fifteen ships are sighted, he starts watching the captain's reaction. That should give him a good gauge of how much trouble this could be.

Barratore looks down closer to 30' than 20 to the ocean sparying off the port side stern "At least I know how to swim." he says to none in particular.

Fish, probably should have expected that but for some reason it catches him off guard. The big bull cocks his head and then with a snort does his best to put the thing into his stomach with the least amount of contact with his tongue. Followed by copius amounts of aspargus, bread and water.

He looks around the deck for where different piles of rope are stored or kept in case someone should go overboard. He himself planned on staying in the middle of the ship, and nowhere near the edge.

At the mention of the extra five ships, Crag takes a look and counts them himself. "Hmmm. seems someone is pretty determined." He says to himself as he double checks his axe and shield.

Tuesday September 6th, 2011 2:44:23 PM

Harvest Moon takes to the tying of knots and even ties her arm to a rail through the use of one hand and her teeth.

Lemick is glad to have the stink of the harbor behind for the fresh smell of the sea. He watches the crew, looking for anything suspicious. (ooc: skill rolls?)

Tom gets used to the sea, and practices popping stones into the rolling waves. Artus seems to be the only 'officer' on the ship. The other sailors all seem to be experienced, but have additional duties instead of completely separate jobs for cook, sailmaker, carpenter, etc) Artus is happy enough to talk defense. "When it comes to battle", says the small Halfling, " You count on me to keep the ship as fast as possible and not run into anything. I count on you to repel boarders. My sailors have had some training in the heavy crossbow, billhook, and cutlass; but any serious fighting will have to be by you." Artus seems unconcerned about the other ships that are sailing with the fleet, though he does keep an eye out for the closer ones.

Peza gets her 'sea stomach' and learns that the ship doesn't have beds; everyone will sleep in hammocks or (like Barratore) find a nest of equipment. There is no hammock big enough for the large minotaur, but once he squeezes down to the hold, there is enough space and barrels to put together something comfortable enough for the 'taur. Of other passengers, Peza notes that the SeaSprite only contains sailors, Artus, and the WLA group. "Yes mistress", responds the cook/sailor as he cleans up the noon meal, "the SeaSprite is owned by the Woldian League of Adventurers lock, stock, and barrel. Once we get to Rum and set up, this here ship will be at the Outpost's disposal for where we sail. And all us sailors get part ownership in her too!"

Barratore is a bit uneasy at the moving ship, the sea spray, and the prospect of lots of fish in his belly for the next 6 months. At the mention of 15 ships versus ten, he look to Artus for explanation. The Navigator grumps, but shrugs. "The Fleet Commodore calls them 'Remoras', ships that are 'hangers on' with the Fixer Fleet. There is no telling what their intentions are, anything from a ship filled with clerics of Flower to brigands of the worst sort. Problem is, until they show their intentions," he shrugs, "it's a large ocean and no one owns it."

Crag takes the time to secure his armor and most of his other gear below decks below decks, keeping his shield, axe, and holy symbol with him and staying in the middle of the ship.

Gerox is satisfied with the crew and navigator, but wonders when the Captain will make an appearance. It seems Artus notices, and calls up to the crow's nest where the gnome is lounging. "There ain't no Captain, lestwise how you are used to it, Master Gerox! Sal Theringer was to take that spot, but had to stay back, and so I'm the master of this vessel. But there ain't no slaveys either, this being a free ship, and all the sailors are part owners as well as members of the WLA!" Artus sizes up Gerox and nods. "You know something, and I'd be glad to have your help where needed. Sharp eyes and the Crows Nest it is!"
................

As if Artus' words are prophetic, soon another ship races closer and closer to the SeaSprite. It is the Leaper, a ketch-rigged ship (ooc: Sailing Skill DC 10 Highlight to display spoiler: { A Ketch is about 2 knots faster than the SeaSprite (a sloop), but slower turning radius}. The Leaper pulls to a parallel course and speed with the SeaSprite, 50 feet from the port side, and the starboard gunwales are lined with a dozen figures. One figure amidships is in a gilded breastplate and shouts across the water.

"Hey You! Woldian Losers Association! You sure you want to risk your lives for making sure someone else gets rich? What a bunch of Maroons!"

Harvest Moon waves in reply to Peza, a large grin of excitement plastered across her face. Her eyes go even wider as another boat draws nearer, pulls alongside, and matches their speed. She rushes to the rail of the ship and waves her hand vigorously over her head in greeting until ...

"What is that you said?" The small half-elfish girl places her palms atop the rail with the purpose of levering herself up, then thinks better of the action. Instead, rising up on her toes, she clings to the rail with one arm and pokes the other over in the direction of the man with the shiny armor.

"YOU! WHO ARE YOU? YOU ARE BAD!" she shouts loudly in retort.

It is difficult to view the other boat, propped up on the rail as she is. But still, Harvest Moon tries to see whether the others might be gearing up for more mischief than the simple game of insults that has already begun.

Sense Motive 10

DMSteveK - Incident with the Leaper  d20+10=24 ;
Wednesday September 7th, 2011 10:39:36 AM

Lemmick has noticed 2 sailors that don't seem to have thier full attention on thier work. One keeps his head down and tends to do jobs that keep him away from others. The other is the lookout at the bows who seems to be watching the other boats more than attending his duties.

The SeaSprite and the Leaper continue to match speed and direction, skating through the swells of the open sea before a stiff breeze. After the first hail, it seems the majority of the WLAers prepare for arrows or other action and are content to be silent and see what happens. Harvest Moon on the other hand, with some prompting from Gerox, trades banter with the gilded breastplated one on the Leaper, though she can't figure out what his game is.

The man throws his head back and laughs. "You are a feisty one, my little poppet! You and your little talking manniquin too! Oh yes, small man, I can see you, no need to hide behind her dirty skirts." And he laughs again. "You hear that boys?" and here he pitches his barritone into a wimpy falsetto "we're going to exploit the weak!"

The others along the rail laugh and brandish various weapons, a bastard sword, crossbow, shortbow, trident among them, and they all begin calling over to the SeaSprite.

"Gonna die broke and alone, babe! Be nice, and you can be my third wife!"

"Grab what you can, cause the big dogs are here!"

"What did the minotaur say when he got to shore? Same thing they always say: Mooo! Mooo!"

"What do you call a dwarf on a ship? The Anchor!"

The man in the gilded breastplate stands on the Leaper's gunwale, one hand tight to a rope, listening to the others shout before he raises a hand and they stop waiting for their leader to talk. "I'm Carly, and these are Carly's Heroes. We are gonna be the ones that Rum looks to to save their skin, and we're gonna get RICH doing it too. If you wanna be with the winners, come look us up!"

Harvest Moon frowns a little puzzled frown. "Gerox Shale, is not 'Carly' the name of a woman?" she asks with the purest and most serious of intents.

"You are boastful!" Harvest Moon shouts across to the other boat. "And I will pay you no more heed." With those words she turns and leaves the rail behind. Instead, she heads for the back of the boat where the halfling Artus Morindim stands next to the long stick that steers the boat.

Here, Harvest Moon takes her book from within her pack and opens it to a blank page. With stylus ready, she asks, "Please, Artus Morindim, point out for me the boats that are of our group and tell me their names." In her voice is a note of irritation as the insults and catcalls continue to drift from the Leaper over the sounds of salt spray. "I will watch the other boats with greater care until we know who rides them."

As the boat sways and jostles against the waves of the sea, Harvest Moon lets her knees flex to provide an even surface upon which to write the names of the ships.

DMSteveK - Incident with the Leaper
Friday September 9th, 2011 10:18:15 AM

Calls continue back and forth between the Leaper and the SeaSprite, and it seems that no one gets the better of the other. Further, while a couple barbs find hold, an equal ammount only cause appreciation as to originality. After about 10 minutes of boasts, insults, and speculations as to parentage called across the waters, Carly waves at the man at the wheel of the Leaper, and the ketch veers port and away from the SeaSprite.

Artus obiediently tells Harvest the names of the other ships in the Fixer Fleet, and then points out another clue. "Each ship's mast has a runner line from the tiller to the mast, see? This enables the ship to send flag signals to other ships. Each ship in the Fixer Fleet has a yellow pennant with a silver symbol of Alemi on it transfixed by a red drop of Woldsblood. Alemi Symbol

"The Rhemoras? They know they can't be too aggressive, or the entire fleet will come together to sink them. As long as we are in sight of the fleet, the Rhemoras will be on thier best behavior."

Peza checks on Carly's breastplate artwork. While she can tell it is rather expensive, the designs seem to be just that, designs without any symbolism or crest.

Lemick notes through easy conversation that the lookout and solitary sailor are both on the day shift, and where thier hammocks are in the hold. The young man further realizes that everyone except Artus is sleeping in the same space in the hold; there are no individual rooms. Even the hammocks are used in 'hotbunking', the day and night shift using the same hammocks. Only each sailors seachest, a small locked box 3x2x1 foot marks thier private possessions.

Artus also seems to not like what he sees in the Crows Nest. Once the Leaper is out of hearing distance, the Navigator delivers a blistering to the lookout that questions his intelligence, parentage, and his ability to hold himself steady to pee. It is quite explicit and derogatory, and even most of the sailors stop what they are doing to listen in awe and admiration. After that, the lookout is as sharp as a tack!

The face of Harvest Moon freezes in shock. Then a tinge of pink blush colors her cheeks as she lowers her head again to hide her face in her writing. Gerox Shale is a very funny gnome. Sheep. What a terrible thing to say, she thinks with the touch of a secret smile at the corners of her lips.

At the end of her list, Harvest Moon adds the line. Below the line, she adds the name of the Leaper.

"If you will teach us the many things to watch for upon the sea, Navigator Artus Morindim," Harvest Moon offers after the Crows Nest Watcher is thoroughly scolded, "we can also be Crows Nest Watchers as well. I think that I would very much like to ride the Crows Nest, if you will allow it."

Barratore will trade barbs and has no issue with the more base insults involving parentage, the contents of bed pans and personal orientations. His blood is pumping well and good by the time the exchange ends. If only there was now something to physically do. Barratore quickly begins to find the confining space aboard ship to be a problem. There was nothing to hit, nowhere to run and really nothing to do about either.

Finally coming to a stop near Lemick he muses aloud, "They will definitely continue to be trouble. I wonder whether Carly's heroes will be competiton or advesaries." Adding a moment later, "The difference between the two being a much higher body count in advisaries."

Lemick nods to Barratore in agreement. "We can always hope for competition, and perhaps encourage it. Time and events will have to decide which side the coin lands on"

In a quieter tone, "At this point, I worry more about those on this ship, those the Heroes." He looks to the sailor who was recently chewed out. "Lax when we have barely left the shore. There is another that worries me as well -- nothing specifically, just an eerie feeling like they are hiding something. Could be anything, not necessarily bad, but it's got my hair standing on end."

Without pointing with his fingers, Lemick shows Barratore the quiet loner when no one else is looking.

Gerox notices Barratore pacing and frowns. He scuttles over to Artus and murmurs something to him pointing at the minotaur. After a quick conversation and permission is granted, he gathers the help of two sailors who pick up some coils of stout rope. All three climb the rat lines into the rigging. Soon both lines are secured high up and drop to the deck below.

Gerox is soon tugging on Barratore's sleeve. "Come on big fellow. I have something for you to try...if your strong enough and brave enough." He leads him over to the two lines and points. Here is a way for you to burn off some excess energy. Gerox grabs each rope in one hand and starts to climb but only gets a few feet before he has to stop. (climb roll 7) This will take strength and dexterity. Climbing one rope is easy enough but using 2 without the aid of your legs will be a challenge. Just remember if you fall and break a plank, Artus will probably keelhaul you. I bet it will even be more fun when the seas are up."

Gerox steps back and points at the ropes and grins, "If it is to easy, we can always tie weights to you."

Peza approaches Artus .... " Sir since we are tasked to defend your ship .... i have a few questions and some ideas ......

"first idea is ....that we must repel boarders to keep control of the ship ..... now we cannot cover the entire length of the Seasprite in concentrated force .... my idea would be to use some of the cargo nets that we used to load the ship and use them as spacers to direct any boarders to spots we could defend better and in strength .... could we string a cargo net between poles which we could sink into the deck for stability .....do that in a few places .... make them easy to put up and down .... so it doesnt get in the way of normal ship activities .."

" second idea is .... do we have any type of slippery stuuf .... i don't stuff like fish oil or something similar that of course won't burn ...... would cause havoc for and boarders footing ..... won't need much just a couple buckets set aside ....."

" third idea would be to get a few wooden panels to use as sshields for the helmsman ....this way we won't lose any steering ability ..... then we can target the opposing ships helmsmen "

" what do you think of those ?? and we of course could use your expertise of your ship and those that we might face ...."

Harvest offers to also be a Crows Nest watcher. Artus accepts and decides that he will keep a sailor up there, and the WLA heroes can set up thier own watch system. "More eyes is always better", the Navigator states.

Barratore speculates on the future run-ins with the Carly Heroes, and how bloody they might be.

Lemick tries to quietly identify the loner who has given him an eerie feeling, but he doesn't do a very convincing job of doing it unnoticed.

Gerox sets up some climbing ropes for exercise the minotaur.

Peza has some suggestions for defense of the ship. Artus Morindim seems interested. "Cargo nets strung from the deck over and parellel to the water is a standard defense, and I think the sailors will be able to rig some of them pretty well. On deck now is more of a problem. You see, the mast and the sails are just as important as the tiller, and since the mast is forward and the tiller is aft... Well, we'll need the run of the ship as much as any boarders."

"No, no oil on deck. Again, I fear it would hinder us as much or more than the attackers."

"The board shields are a great idea. I could even have a couple sailors hold them which would free you for repelling any attackers. If you would, get with my carpenter and set up the specifications."

Brom is feeling he is hired muscle and should only use his skills as such. The barbarian stays below and out of the way of the sure-footed sailors.

Crag looks for some twine and on ship is easily able to find enough for any need.

..................

Despite worries by Lemick and some of the others, the crew soon shakes out and sailing becomes routine. In the following days, the crow's nest can occasionally spot land to the north, but it is nothing more than unrelenting sea for everyone else.

The only other interesting thing is the Fixer Fleet has attracted a few more "Rhemoras", and the combined fleet now consists of 19 ships. Artus tells the others that two of the ships are from the port of Dirt City, one is from Alisidur, and one claims to be a merchant seeking protection while going towards the Tauric Isles, but everyone knows it is actually a Pirate of Jack. "No fear about the 'pirate' label, my young friends", says the Navigator, "the Pirates of Jack only hunt Alisidurians who are Heartseeded and follow Ga'al. They are pretty much welcome here since they are going to make sure the Alisidurians won't make any trouble."

The SeaSprite has also been given another task by the Fixer Commodore; to be the starboard flanker of the fleet. Artus keeps the ship about a 1/4 mile north of the main body as everyone sails West, guarding the flank and giving early warning to the other ships. "Good practice for you, my lads", he chortles, "and it is only 6 weeks from here to the Tauric Isles!"

Harvest Moon spends many days learning the ways of the ship (for it is a Ship and not a Boat) and the ways of the sea. Many times she climbs the ropes and the webs that the sailors collectively call the Rigging.

Sometimes from high on the rigging, and, at other times, from down on the deck, she scans the waves for danger. More often than not, she finds herself very excited about unknown things that splash nearby, or ride the horizon, or make large dark shadows from under the surface of the sea. Most of the time, these things are little more than her imagination. But sometimes, they are creatures of the sea. Sometimes they are storms in the distance. And sometimes they are large fields of sea plants that are said to be very long, and to wave about within the sea like great banners.

Never before in her life had Harvest Moon dreamed that she would see such things. The sailors seem unmoved by them. They must be very ordinary. But the awe and majesty is such an amazing feeling. It is difficult for Harvest Moon to believe that the sailors would wish not to see things in such a way.

Gerox remembers his old first mate giving him lectures about knowing his ships lines. "Anyone can take orders. I master of his ship knows all of the lines. Where they start, where they end. How much tension is necessary to lift or lower the sail. What happens if one breaks."

Gerox takes this lesson to heart and starts tracing lines and committing them to memory. He has a feeling that the Sea Sprite was going to be important to this group. Knowing her strengths and weakness would be important too. How fast she could turn? How much draft did she need? How much crew was needed to sail her? While some look to the ship defenses, Gerox knows that the Sea Sprite was there home and while she was transport, good seamanship was her best weapon.

Gerox is sitting at dinner with his new friends and he says, "You know...we need a name. Every good adventuring group has a name. The Gold Dragons, The Children of Chaos and so on. We need a name for our fame to spread. Any ideas?"

DMSteveK - The Tauric Isles
Tuesday September 13th, 2011 4:39:32 PM

Night Watch and Day Watch. Making boots, learning the ropes (literally). The team finds that without being sailors themselves, there is a lot of down time being a passenger on the ship. Two months is a LOT of time, and even the most lazy find they know at least the basics of the ship. The SeaSprite is a sloop, having a single mast and a long boom holding the mainsail stiff. It is not quite as fast as the large square sailed ships, but it is much more maneuverable. The SeaSprite is able to come about faster than any of the other ships and is also able to tack closer to the wind; going nearly 80 degrees directly into a breeze.

Gerox finds that the SeaSprite on the open sea has a centerboard that provides stability and a draft of 13 feet, but the board can be removed giving the ship a 7 foot shallow draft, enabling them to get into many spots a larger ship cannot.

Gerox also brings to mind how many adventure groups have thier own name. The words "Golden Dragons" and "Children of Chaos" and "Grey Knights" echo around the evening meals, giving rise to young heroes and sailors alike telling stories of those fabled champions. Valdor and Shiraz, Tratain and Monthor, Peerimus and Firn'gaer, overcoming unbeatable odds, internal dissentions, and personal ghosts to be a shining light and example of what heroes could be....

Two months of sailing has the 10 ship Fixer Fleet (and 9 Remoras) cruise among Tauric Isles. The high mountain of Minotaur Isle can be seen, its slopes dark with vines heavy with fruit. Even the breeze carries the tart smell of grapes being pressed into the most coveted wines in the Wold. Later, the starboard horizon shows a mountain thrusting out of the sea, no inhabitants, but any Taur feels a peaceful longing loking at the island. The mountains and valleys of Centaur Island are away past the horizon, though the SeaSprite can observe many smaller islets and villages as they go about thier business.

Rounding a cape of Wemic Island, the last isle in the Tauric archepeligo, the lookout shouts out, "merfolk! merfolk! Starboard side!" The group knows this is a general announcement of any sort of aquatic being, and not necessarily a mermaid. However, when they look, it seems the report is accurate: a mermaid is swimming alongside the ship, waving her hand as if hoping to talk.

"Fruit! Fruit ahoy!" calls Harvest Moon. Ahoy being one of the many words of the sea that she has learned in the many days of sailing aboard the Seasprite. The half-elven girl bounces, quite literally, with excitement at the sight of the bountiful grapes. "Can we not heave the ship to land and gather some?"

But an even more stunning sight draws her attention from thoughts of the delicious fruit. "She has the tail of a fish!!!" With great excitement, Harvest Moon thrusts her arm over the rail, pointing at the mermaid that none need help in pointing out. Harvest waves with great enthusiasm.

"Perhaps we could call ourselves the Great Explorers, Gerox Shale," she then says, turning to look at the gnome while clinging to the rail with her arms, her toes hanging below her, an inch or two off of the deck. "We have traveled very far. And we have seen so many amazing things. Who else can say that they have seen a woman with the tail of a fish," she says, unaware that many of her own shipmates had done just so back at the tavern in South Port.

The one loner figure stays in his mind, unable to shake the feeling. Still, Lemick has avoided direct mention of it to anyone else since his not-so-delicate mention. As the days pass, he hopes the man chalks it up to land-lover nervousness.

While his legs have adjusted, his mind still plays tricks on him, so even with the call of a true mermaid, Lemick is slow and deliberate in his walk to the side of the ship.

His arms and chest have darkened with the constant day sun, and he offers the mermaid a quick wave before returning both hands to the railing.

Barratore spends a great deal of time on the ropes Gerox secured. Climb 21 athletics 5. The sway and give of the ropes have him quite befuddled. Other parts of the day, Barratore is moving from stern to bow on the port and starboard sides, getting a feel and memorizing the routes through repetition and muscle memory. During the heat of the day, Barratore removes himself to his makeshift bunk for a nap.
Life at sea has very little appeal and he finds little to be thrilled or happy about. Perhaps on a larger vessel but not here on this sloop. The thought that even after Rum is set upon that this tiny ship will be deployed regularly is not a happy one. Barratore does his best to pit that from his mind.

"a name for our group?". Barratore thinks on the question for a few moments. An identity as a whole would be beneficial but without deeds of anymind this far he was at a loss on suggestions. "We represent the WLA, we are adventure seekers, as I understand we are on call to further the interests of the WLA in Rum. Aside from not being referred to as one of Gerox's minions I don't have much tomsay on it right now"

The mermaid or rather the commotion the mermaid generates, pulls Barratore to the rail. He returns her wave and calls over Crag and Lemick

DMSteveK - Lorelai's Pearl
Wednesday September 14th, 2011 1:48:01 PM

Gerox, Harvest, Lemick, Tom, and Barratore look over the mermaid with interest. There doesn't appear to be any overt animosity between the sailors and the fish-lady. Artus acknowledges the Lookout, and, seeing the WLAers are taking care of the situation, keeps the ship going in a straight line. Upon getting some hand waves, the woman swims closer to the side of the boat.

"Greetings, Landwalkers", she says in a sultry and alien voice, "I understand that your customs demand an exchange of names before speaking of other matters. My name is Lorelai, and I request help from those who can walk on land. I am a guardian for a large Pearl that has been stolen by a nearby village of fishermen. It is a test for me to be ready for greater responsibility for my Father, and he will be most vexed if the Pearl has been lost."

Lorelai continues to explain that the only way she can get the Pearl herself is to ask her Father the use of his water elementals who would flood the village in a tidal wave. She continues on in an even voice. "I like the village, the children are fun to play with in the water and it would make me sad to have to kill them all and have no one to play with. Could you go and get my Pearl for me so I don't have to drown the village?"

Gerox pauses and says to Harvest, "Please go get Artus. I need to know if we are going to be stopping soon and if we can help."

Gerox turns his attention back to the mermaid, "We are part of a fleet travelling a great distance. We need permission from our leader to see if we can take the time to help you. We can't lag behind but if we are stopping soon, then I am sure we can try and help you retrieve your pearl. How as it stolen in the first place?"

Harvest Moon gives great consideration to the words of Gerox Shale. Gerox Minions. Minions of Gerox. In neither way does the name sound particularly fierce or inspiring. Perhaps, though, there is something that is there that she does not understand. Harvest Moon is close to giving up her search for the answer and to asking about the name, when Iron Tom speaks up, and it becomes clear now that Gerox Shale only speaks in jest.

Perhaps.

The approach of the mermaid wipes all thoughts of the name from Harvest Moon's mind. She wishes help. Further, this may also provide the chance to go to land and pick the sweet grapes that they had seen upon the shore.

"Hello! I am Harvest Moon," replies Harvest Moon with a wave of her hand. "You must be very careful of the things that you value," she calls, dispensing hard-won advice gleaned from a life in the Contested Kingdoms. "Next time you must hide your pearl in a better place."

"I wish to go," she says then, turning to the others. "But I am worried that the fleet will not wait for us if we go to shore. Do you think that we can go?"

Almost at the same time, Gerox Shale expresses a similar concern.

"Yes, I will go," Harvest Moon replies, then rushes off to find the halfling navigator and present the question.

The Dwarf hears the suggestions of Rums Raiders as a group name and responds. "I'm not liking that one Brom. Sounds catchy, but raiders implies something less than honest and forthright, something on the less than nice side that we should probably try and avoid."

At the call of mermaid, Crag walks over to the rail to look, hoping it is the same Mermaid who's beautiful voice touched him in the bar.

At her request for help, his immediate instinct is to try and assist, but that might not be part of the captains plan. Likely as well, the village would either not be forthcoming, or have their own story as to who the rightful owner of the pearl was. If a single person took it, they likely would have hidden it, and once again not be too forthcoming. How long would a proper investigation take? would the ship wait or even stop?

The different scenarios play out in Crags mind as he listens to the request, and hears his companions eagerness to assist. "Wouldn't mind setting me boots on solid ground again" he says to no one in particular.

As multiple people start heading off in different directions, or making plans to do something they may or may not be able to do, Crag thinks that at some point soon, we are going to have to pick ourselves a leader. Someone to weigh all aspects of situations, make the decision, and be responsible for the outcome. As all Dwarves know, groups always work best when they function as a cohesive team, and teams work best with competent leadership and direction.

Artus nods at the questions with the fleet and runs up a couple signal flags. Soon a response comes from the Commodore's ship, and the Navigator nods and turns to the group of young heroes. "We are only a couple of hours from our layover port on Wemic Island. The town of Chessford is where the Fleet is going to reprovision and conduct some repairs and relax for at least 2 weeks before the next leg of our journey. The Commodore has given permission for us to stay behind and take care of this minor problem."

Artus Morindim shouts orders and soon the SeaSprite 'heaves to', its mainsail luffing in the breeze and coming to a relative stand still so the heroes can speak easier with Lorelai the Mermaid.

Lorelai smiles, obviously taking the heroes questions as agreement to help. I can lead you to the Landwalker Village", and she points to a bay several miles away that has a fishing village on the shore, "it is there. I have used a magic of mine to locate the direction of the Pearl, and it is in the Village."

"Why they have stolen it, I do not know, but I know it is one of thier warriors. The Pearl was hidden in a rocky crevasse in a dangerous current and guarded by a ferocious friend of mine. When I swam by to speak with my friend, he was dead, the Pearl gone, and the obvious marks of a bladed steel weapon. It must have been a strong Landwalker to hold thier breath in the buffeting waters for so long!"

Harvest Moon stands below the flags as the flap and wave in the wind. It is very curious the manner in which they have used them to speak to the other boats in the fleet. Never would she have imagined speaking through flags. But, sure enough, they have done so. The world is an endlessly surprising place.

The description that the mermaid gives of the manner in which she supposes her pearl to have been stolen ignites the imagination of Harvest Moon. Within her mind, a man, as big - no, bigger - than Barratore Steelwind strides through the waves, wielding a sword that is taller than she herself stands. It might be difficult to fight one such as that. But, maybe such a one might take pity on the mermaid once the situation is explained. Or, maybe they might trade this man for the pearl in the same way that they did with the guards at the warehouse.

Harvest Moon once again leaps up to the rail, and hangs there, leaning upon her elbows. "Will you come with us, Lorelai?" she calls to the mermaid. "Perhaps they do not know that the pearl belongs to you. Perhaps, when they see you and understand your needs and your duty to your father, they will relent and return it to you from kindness."

"If they do not, then we will fight them. For then we will know them to be stubborn and greedy robbers."

"The warrior surely had a reason to fight for such a treasure, as I cannot imagine it's worth in a fishing village to be much. Still, we will resolve this one way or another preventing the flooding of the entire village."

"I am Lemick, follower of the path of Luck and you have my word,"

He might not even think of it as stealing. I suspect the same will happen to us in our future. We need to tread lightly here. DMSteveK - Lorelai's Pearl
Friday September 16th, 2011 11:03:36 AM

Lorelai answers Peza. "There are two handfuls of Landwalkers among the more than one handful of children who like to play in the waves."

At Harvest's suggestion, Lorelai shakes her green-blonde hair. "I have tried to reason with them to return my Pearl, but the warriors have refused. If they see me with you, their hearts will turn away from the correct current." She surges up and looks around, then points to a pinnacle of rock at one end of the cresent-shaped beach. Waves crash in a frothy, white foam about the rock which looks like a jagged broad spear point thrust at the sky. "I will wait for you near those rocks. If I don't have my Pearl by sunrise, I will release my fathers Water Elementals."

And the mermaid disappears beneath the waves.

Artus expertly sails the SeaSprite into the shallow, cresent-shaped bay. The centerboard is removed and the SeaSprite drops anchor in 10 feet of water about 150 feet from shore. Artus tasks to sailors with the dinghy to ferry heroes to the beach. Four Medium-sized creatures (or Barratore and 2 Medium heroes) can fit in the boat besides the sailors.

On the beach, a welcome party seems to be waiting, consisting solely of liontaurs. This small island must be a part of the Wemic Nation!

There is little that Harvest Moon would like to do than to jump from the side of the ship into the water along the shore. But this is a serious endeavor. They have a responsibility to fulfill their promises to Lorelai first before thinking of entertaining themselves with a swim or some other distraction.

Her awe at seeing for the first time in her life, people in the form of lions, also helps temper Harvest Moon's wilder impulses. "Peza, they are lion people."

"They are Lion People,"
she repeats to Barratore Steelwind, heedless of the fact the he himself can be very aptly described as a bull person.

She climbs into the dinghy, her polearm pointed toward the sky like a small mast. From there, she watches the shore, the water, and the Lion People. Their faces and bodies move like none she has seen before. It is difficult to understand what they are thinking, and best, perhaps, to remain alert for this reason.

Barratore, Harvest, and Peza jump in the dinghy first. Gerox, insistant on getting to shore along with the big but not very diplomatic warriors, squeezes his small form into the prow and goes along.

The dinghy is overcrowded, which becomes evident when the sailors try to beach the dinghy. Instead of sliding regally into the sandy beach, the small boat nearly capsizes as it strikes the sand! There is a bit of wobbling before the group gets out: good thing the sailors are all experienced! (ooc: even though the sailors rolled a nat "1", their +10 skill enabled them to not capsize the overfull boat)

After the sailors drop off the first four, they immediately row back for the next group.

Upon closer look, the liontaur on the beach look formidable and savage. They wear little clothing other than broad leather belts that seem to hold tools and weapons, and their manes are woven with intricate beaded designs. Several have long spears that they rest an end easily in the sand. There are 12 Liontaurs here, and 7 younger versions in a knot nearby, just slightly further up the beach. Their peaceful curious faces paired with the caution with which they regard Barratore Steelwind speak to the need for reassurance.

So it is that Harvest Moon turns the polearm upside down, thrusting the blade into the soft sand where it stands by itself pointing up at the sky. Then, separating herself from the weapon, she steps to the side of Barratore Steelwind and puts her small hand into his larger one.

One question plagued the young minotaur, 'How did Windpaw know the pearl was there?' It seems odd that Windpaw would randomly make his way into high surf on a regular basis trying to pry open clams to see if there was a pearl or anything in one. DMSteveK - Huaydo Cookfires

The liontaurs scoff at Gerox's warnings. Merfolk? Pah! They are weak and not strong hunters. You are listening to empty threats and bedtime tales. The Wemic will always place thier strength in thier arm and claw. And many other retorts of that nature.

It appears the heroes responses are the right ones; leave the spear and halberd in the sand, thus burying any possible differences until they are picked up again. It is time for the feast!

The feast is outdoors in the common area surrounded by adobe huts with thatched or leather roofs. A central fire burns, more for cooking than warmth, and the food is primarily a surf-and-turf variety of meats. From the land there is whole goat and pig roasted over the fire. From the sea, there are several huge kettles that boil fish, shellfish, some seaweed, and some tangy spices all together with seawater. Off to the side there are some little things that can be gathered, like wild honey and nuts, goat milk, water, and wine...lots of wine.

The Wemic cook continuously and quite dexterously shaves the outside, cooked parts of the roasts off into large platters that are passed around democratically and liontaur and two-legs take thier fill until the platter has to return to the cook for more slabs of roasted flesh. At the boil pots, the wemic use long-handled forks to fish out steamed shellfish (and also have enough forks for thier guests to do the same.) Great quantities of wine are drunk, and many boasts of exploits past and yet to come.

Windpaw tells his tale of a bet with another Wemic that he couldn't climb the Spear Rock at the end of the bay. So the warrior ran the end of the bay, chased by a HellHound until Windpaw dove off the cliff and into the churning surf. Swimming for all his might, he nearly made it to the pillar of rock when a wave forced him under and his paw was siezed by a Giant Clam. Fighting clam, surf, and breath, Windpaw deliberately thrust MORE of his paws into the trap in order to rend the monster from the inside. Finally released, Windpaw took the smooth stone inside the Clam as a trophy and then climbed the Spear Rock, howling his triumph from the pinnacle. He then dove back into the waters to swim to the beach.

"So, do you have any deed that can possibly best that?", he asks with humor, confidence, and pride.

From that place, the half-elven girl tips her head from first one side to the other in an attempt to see what the Lion Woman might see from the persepective of where she stands.

"I'm sorry. Please excuse me." Unable to see any but the most obvious of things that the Lion Woman might be seeing - that there is eating and drinking and people going here and going there - Harvest Moon goes to the side of the Lion Woman, and reaching up, tugs at her elbow. "I am Harvest Moon. May I ask what it is that you are looking for?" she asks.

Having had much to drink and eat and is feeling the wine.

"That is quite the story" Brom says taking another drink from his tankard. "I liked the chase of the hellhound and climbing the tall mountain." he says with a swagger. "But I loved the part how you frantically kicked at the clam until you were able to beat it." He pauses to take another drink before continuing. "So how did you avoid the clams fierce claws or its deadly teeth?" He grabs a fork for the seafood and grabs a clam. Holding the clam up as to prove a point. "Oh clam what big teeth you have? What big claws you have?"

He sits back down and takes another drink and looks at Windpaw.

Barratore can eat and drink with best of them. At least he thoroughly believes it to be true. As the night wears on and he listens to the story and then Broms own comments, the Minotaur chuckles and then finds himself laughing with the joke. He would likely contribute a comment, but cannot think of anything clever. Sure the story was embellished but that was the point of it.

Something else so worthy? He had no idea, that was a good tell. Barratore thinks back to the grand tales Metascar told about the fire, but through drink they were blending and all he manages is to gesture towards his companions "well go ahead then!". Barratore couldn't wait to hear it.

Gerox sits back and watches the warrior's boast and tell their tales. He partakes of the food and but holds his drinking to a minimum knowing their was no way he could ever compete with the large bodies around him. He will listen to the stories and nod his head.

As the evening wears down, he will move over to the older female who seems to have a bit more wisdom than the young warriors. He will bow low to her and say, "Excuse me Madam. My name is Gerox Shale. You seem to hold a position of importance with your people. I have tried to reason with Windpaw but he seems to in love with his own battle prowness. I believe he is a powerful warrior but somethings strength alone can not defeat. My father was a very wise gnome and one of the many lessons he taught me was "Why make enemies when you can make friends. I am not saying you couldn't beat the merfolk and the water elementals but what would it cost you? Is a gem worth the cost?"

Gerox sighs and fumbles in his pocket for the pipe that was left on the ship. He sighs again and looks up into her large eyes and says, "I believe a war between your folk and the merfolk would just be a waste of resourses and life. Neither of you really wants what the other has. You live on land, they live in the sea. I am sure something beneficial to both sides could be worked out. Maybe they could herd fish for you and you could trade them land food or weapons. I don't know.

What can we do to help this? Is their a quest we could do to prevent this unnecessary loss of life? We are young but have a variety of skills. What do you think?"

Windpaw stares at Brom blank-faced before he bursts forth in a huge bellowing laugh, and all the other liontaurs join in. "Fierrrce as a hunterrr this one!" and "Bold as a Wemic!" and "I like you, two-legs, for all that you look like a newborrrn kitt!" Barratore is also given some respect from the Wemic as he drinks deep with the best of the Taur.

The others, with thier talk of 'friends', and 'peaceful settlements', and no boisterous drinking are soon seen in another light. "Forrr one so young, you are such an old woman", is one comment, another being "Let me get you some milk if the wine is too strrrong", and a third is "Mewling kitts talk of frrriends, hunterrrs take victorrry." It is clear the other Wemic think little of the ideas of 'being nice so we can all get along'.

The female sits and listens but is very good at concealing her intentions. (ooc: Need Perception DC 24 Highlight to display spoiler: { She is sizing up the WLAers to see how strong they are, and is planning some compromise. Yet it is obvious she is a behind-the-scenes leader and not one that will speak and everyone will jump.})

She does unbend enough to say, "The Huaydo Pride is famous for great deeds, and famous for its generosity. If these guests of ours or our leader proposed a suitable challenge, it would be a mighty tale to gift them our Pearl."

The other Wemic agree this is a fine idea. Suddenly the evening air is still but for the crackling of the fire as two dozen veteran Wemic hunters turn eyes to the WLAers to see what they would propose.

Crag instantly regrets the words as he says them, unsure of where this could lead. Time to trust to his axe and the Gods. "It's on." he thinks to himself as he awaits the Wemic response to his thrown gauntlet.

Casually, Lemick places himself near the leader and the female.

"Perhaps a friendly competition of Wold strength, wisdom and endurance could be had. We are travelling to a far off land, and should the Hyuodos win, prestige of their grandness could be spread to lands never travelled upon. Harvest Moon (AC17/T17/F14; HP10/10; CMD 18) - Al
Tuesday September 27th, 2011 5:41:52 PM

It is difficult to understand the Lion Woman. Even her words are confusing. Would they be happy with a challenge that could be come a mighty tale? Or could a mighty tale be told, that alone to please them enough to give up the pearl?

It is soon clear, though, that Crag Hammerfist believes that she wishes the former of the two choices. Harvest Moon ponders his choice of challenges. They seem a proud people. How great a story would come from this? Would I wish to boast about a thing that I could not do? Would I tell others of people who did a task for me? I would not.

But what to do? What to say. Could she even manage such words that would be necessary? The half-elfish girl looks down into herself. For her, this would be the true test of courage. To speak up so, such that all eyes would be upon her, and to find the words that would sway both her own friends as well as the Lion People. When Barratore Steelwind, proposes the slaying of a dog, she comes near to giving up. But, then Lemick Four-Leaf Sted proposes a competition.

"Let me first tell you of our fight upon the docks of the city of South Port." Had hesitated, she would not have spoken at all. So Harvest Moon did not hesitate. She jump to the center of things and began her story. "We were constrained. It is the law of South Port that no blood should be spilled. No lives are to be taken. And so we were constrained by this law while upon the docks."

"We wished to board our ship. But they stood before us, baring out way. Eleven of them to our nine. We could not draw their blood. But they had no regard for the law, and they attacked us with clubs." Harvest Moon then tells the story of the battle of the burly boys. She speaks in simple words. And, as she speaks, her body draws into a protective crouch, her hands ball into fists, and her shoulders roll as though throwing punches.

"That is how we gained our ship, and the next day we sailed from South Port."

"And so, if you wish a challenge, perhaps you will combat with us. We, against an equal number of you. Without drawing blood. Until all upon one side is unconscious. If you can defeat us, you can then say that you have performed a feat that has gained us our ship. If we defeat you, then you will be able to tell others that you have stood against us in combat."

Windpaw takes up the chant, and soon all the Wemics are dancing around the fire with Brom and Barratore; "Death to the dogs!" "Death to the dogs!"

More wine is poured, and back slaps and bear hugs, bumping of chests, and other testosterone-filled stuff. It is a heady moment!

When things wind down, it is noticed the female Wemic did not join in the parade around the fire. But she smiles, showing teeth in a feral grin. "So it is chosen the deed our guest-friends will do to get the Pearl. Go to Hellhound Ridge and slay a Hellhound, returning with its dead body. That would truly be a deed worthy of praise and reward. And what better reward does our Pride have than the Pearl?"

The other Wemics heartily agree.

Windpaw guages the failing light. "Therre is about an hourrr of light left, plenty of time forrr you to go to the rrridge and kill some Hellhounds! Be warrrned, they arrre strrrong and filled with firrre in thierrr mouths. And they arrre rrrarrrely alone. It appears the WLAers have a choice. They can hunt Hellhounds and the Wemics will give them the Pearl, they can attack the Wemics and steal the Pearl, or they can let the liontaur village get drowned by water elementals. Nobody ever said heroic choices were easy!

With Crag adding encouragement, Barratore is off in the direction of the ridge. The minotaur figures that he, the tough dwarf and Brom could take one. If the others came, they would be assured success if not, they would simply need to be a bit careful. Pulling a large javelin, Barratore answers Crag, "An Enlargement would be great." DMSteveK - Hellhound Hunt: To the Stream

Some of the liontaur stay behind with those heroes not going on the hunt. It is obvious that "Iron Shot" Tom has drunk a little too much of the heady wine and is in no condition to go on this hunt. As the party members know, tomorrow will be too late to hunt and get the Pearl, for the mermaid made them a promise...

Windpaw, the female Wemic, and 2 other warriors go with the WLAers out of the village and south along the crest of the beach. Soon, the ridge that makes up the southern crest of the moon-shaped bay is prominent, only a 30 foot wide stream separating the fertile plain where the group stands from a more rocky promentory.

The Female Wemic speaks. "Yes, guest-friends, they are the actual hounds from the Lands of Unrest. Tomi, the great god of all Taurs, long ago saved the Wemic in the Great Cataclysm, leading us by dreams to come to islands far from the mainland. The dreams urged us to find the Minotaur and the Centaur, and, together, bring peace to all children of Tomi."
"But our ancestors lost thier way. The horror of the Cataclysm made them turn on each other, some clining to the ancient ways to please Tomi, and some forsaking the hunters way as if the ancient ways were what caused the Cataclysm. Both groups forgot the mission of Tomi. In anger, Tomi sent the Hellhounds to our islands as a test and reminder of his calling to the Wemic. And as long as the Wemic do not bring peace to the Taur, we will battle the demons of our past."

Windpaw then gives his last advice. "Thierrr brrreath is no more than 10 feet away, but can strrrike a grrreat numberrr of warrriorrrs in that distance. Count yourrr warrriorrrs as you crrross the strrream. Be brrrave and do not rrrun. Be surrre to quickly kill thierrr driverrrs to avoid the main pack. With but a single look behind to see who might be accompanying her, Harvest Moon enters the stream and begins wading across to the rocky ridge.

Seven heroes cross the stream, most by their own power and Gerox by holding onto Barratore. The stream is mountain-fed and cold, but pure as the best water, and is 4 feet deep at the worst of it. Crag, weighted down with his armor, has no difficulty keeping his feet, but has to do a couple of jump-bobs to catch his breath as the deeper water closes over the dwarf's eyes.

Still, the heroes are soon safe and wet on the other side of the stream. "Iron Shot" Tom is sleeping off the wine along with several liontaurs, and Leapold elected to stay on the SeaSprite when the others came to the village.

Harvest's keen eyes can't see anything moving about in the sparse undergrowth of the rock ridge. And nothing immediately jumps out, either. The ridge rises before them without a noticable trail, and the heroes can see the cliff that falls into the sea about a mile away...
