Bosk AC: 18/10/17 HP 56 of 61 Spells Tuesday September 20th, 2011 11:02:33 PM
Bosk thanks Kyan for healing his wounds, grateful to not have to face the next challenge is such poor shape. As Zane is getting healed for the year the cleric recasts guidance on himself. I'm afraid I my clerical training has offered little in the way of these creatures, my specialty is combating the undead. I will default to the groups decision....I am immune to spider poison, if that helps any, and it sounds like the medusa would be a risky choice. I must admit though, I wonder if you behead her whether the head retains its properties. Imagine attaching it to your armor and putting a cloth over it. Battle starts and you remove the cloth, your opponents now must fight you with out looking at your torso.

Zane Stormfront AC 24 CMD 21 HP 46/50 Wednesday September 21st, 2011 1:41:40 AM
Zane says, "Thank you, Kyan. That damn critter really laid me open," He thinks over the other opponents and has a few comments about each.... "The reptile I have no idea about at all, The Elemental, I expect to be a cave system or a field of boulders. The Bug will be a room of trees and it can probably climb them as well. The next one will most likely be an open field with the stone statues of it's past victories. The spider will most likely be a room full of webs, which will be free to act in them, while we are hindered. I'm of a mind to try the Bug with the trees, but that's my opinion and my best guesses of what we will encounter once it starts. I also suggest we start all near each other, not scattered if at all possible."
Adjusted some spells to rounds and fixed them to be right for duration.
DM Buzz: Um, Zane, how in the world are you this knowledgeable about the beasts in question, without a single Knowledge or skill check?
Was using common sense, from the description. Hearing tales of things, and no, I don't look up monsters unless rolls are made. ex. spiders use webs to trap food, see that with small spiders and flies. an Earth elemental would most likely be surrounded by rocks. notice the lizard and other strange thing got no guess, because Zane has no idea, and the Medusa, rumors that it turns people to stone, and other characters comments made a obvious deduction that it would want an open area, so foes had no place to hide in cover. if it's wrong to use common sense thoughts, then let me know.

Zeoll shares all he can deduce and recall with his comrades in arms. He wonders what attack capabilities the medusa has beyond turning those who look upon her to stone. And if the spider can create webs.
"The spiderr sounds good, given Bosk's immunity. Also, I could cast Obscurring Mist, we can all just close ourr eyes, then we fight the medusa blind."

I think that we should stay away from the medusa and the behir. The group remembers the bard characterizing the creatures from before the troll was summoned. It is quite evident now, that he was correct on the trolls abilities. In this short amount of time, he can't discern without some very special powers, any other qualities.
"The behir is considered a huge magical beast and has an electrical breath weapon. There's not too much else to learn from the elemental, but he does remember that the elemental has some minor damage reduction. Zeoll doesn't remember anything else about this centipede. Must be a new variant. The two-headed troll has always been thought to be the offspring of an ettin and female troll. It obviously will regenerate. The tarantula has barbed hairs it can shoot. It also has tremorsense."
Twenty rounds has now elapsed, eleven of which could be spent on healing from wands or other wise. Don't forget to reroll 1's
In that amount of time, the group can discuss their next actions and prepare. The narrator is ready and the group has by Friday to decide on a new cell and a map location. He doesn't think he can keep Malaphaz at bay forever.

Bosk nods, but waits until the group is ready to call anything out. If it is as Zaneoll says, we should try to make sure we can burn or cut down any webs that arrive. Is anyone able to do that? Zeoll (HP35 of 35, AC22, CMD17) Friday September 23rd, 2011 11:31:03 AM
Zeoll explains an advantage to the center strategy. "I figurre, ourr plan is to put Bosk rright in frront of it, rright? So with us at the centerr, once it appearrs, everyone else falls back, and that puts Bosk between us and it. If we starrt in a corrner, the rrest of us have no way to step back."
[Evil DM Buzz comments: Zeoll says this, not knowing the perils of terrain that await you all! With nasty big pointy teeth! Muahaha!]
Okay, actually that was Cayzle channelling Buzz. :^) Not a real message from our kind and gentle DM.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:22/16/16 HP:57/57 Friday September 23rd, 2011 3:30:19 PM I'm not sure that a corner is the best option for a creature that can climb walls... perhaps it is, I don't think I've ever had to worry about such a thing. Either way, I am happy with the spider option

Beltrin (Keith) AC: 19/14/19 HP: 56/56 CMD: 20 Spells Friday September 23rd, 2011 5:01:30 PM "I still like the idea of the corner... the arena is open anyways, so the worst case scenario is that the spider comes into the middle of us and then we can trap it in the corner, which is even better. Anyways, it probably has some nasty tricks that we don't know about that makes this planning pointless, let's just stick close together and we should be okay."

The group gathers close together in anticipation of what is to come. Before they call the number, looking over at the creature in the cage, it's size doesn't appear all that big, even if it does take up the entire area of the cage. Some prepare by drinking an anti-toxin, another lights a torch and holds it near. Here and there, member locations are discussed and decided and soon, they all take a deep breath before saying in unison, "Cell number six".
The cage off to the side disappears and the experienced group is now more prepared for the large, descending structure that falls down upon them.
Once again, it is dark. Underfoot are what feels like centuries of thick mulch, from many, many season changes. The smell of earthen decay would bring a smile to a ranger, druid, or farmers face, if not for the dire situation. Fresh cool air is muffled by your surroundings. It's seduction more profound because thick and dense strands of webs stick to everyone except Restlin who holds the torch in his hand. He is momentarily blinded as the area around him erupts in a small burst of flame, but is so brief no harm came to the bearer of the element. The area is covered in the sticky stuff and it doesn't seem to be used by the creature as a means of transportation. It's fibers to fine and delicate to support such a large arachnid.
The webbing is so dense in fact, vision is also impaired for those that can see. The area of the torch light is concealed by half and for those with Darkvision can only see twenty feet around them, ten feet of that considered concealed, through the webbing. Those not near the torch light can see it's eerie glow through the webs.
A Perception check should now be asked for. No map sent yet, since no one in the group can see any structures, natural or otherwise.
Zeoll (HP35 of 35, AC22, CMD17) d20+14=22 ; Monday September 26th, 2011 4:52:48 PM
Perception only: Zeoll's base 6 ranks, +2 wis, +3 class bonus, +2 heroism, +1 Taur's Try, gives a total Perception mod of +14. It does not include his lens, which he is not holding.
Roll: 22.
If more action than that is called for, Zeoll starts to sing an inspirational song amid the sticky gloom.
"Oh webs be thick and webs be thin, But don't be worrried, out orr in! Forr if you end up stung orr cut, Just count on Bosk to save yourr butt!".
Inspire Courage gives a +1 competence bonus to attack, damage, and a +1 morale bonus save vs fear and charm. The save bonus is useless to Zeoll, seeing as he already has a +2 morale bonus to saves from his heroism spell.

Shadow conjuration can mimic any sorcerer or wizard conjuration (summoning) or conjuration (creation) spell of 3rd level or lower. Shadow conjurations are only one-fifth (20%) as strong as the real things, though creatures who believe the shadow conjurations to be real are affected by them at full strength. Any creature that interacts with the spell can make a Will save to recognize its true nature.
Spells that deal damage have normal effects unless the affected creature succeeds on a Will save. Each disbelieving creature takes only one-fifth (20%) damage from the attack. If the disbelieved attack has a special effect other than damage, that effect is only 20% likely to occur. Regardless of the result of the save to disbelieve, an affected creature is also allowed any save that the spell being simulated allows, but the save DC is set according to shadow conjuration's level (4th) rather than the spell's normal level. In addition, any effect created by shadow conjuration allows Spell Resistance, even if the spell it is simulating does not. Shadow objects or substances have normal effects except against those who disbelieve them. Against disbelievers, they are 20% likely to work.
A shadow creature has one-fifth the hit points of a normal creature of its kind (regardless of whether it's recognized as shadowy). It deals normal damage and has all normal abilities and weaknesses. Against a creature that recognizes it as a shadow creature, however, the shadow creature's damage is one-fifth (20%) normal, and all special abilities that do not deal lethal damage are only 20% likely to work. (Roll for each use and each affected character separately.) Furthermore, the shadow creature's AC bonuses are just one-fifth as large. A creature that succeeds on its save sees the shadow conjurations as transparent images superimposed on vague, shadowy forms. Objects automatically succeed on their Will saves against this spell.}

Kyan gives Azrael a command and the dog is searching about for a unseen and at the moment un-smelled, creature.
Beriothian lights a few candles and burns some webs away from himself. Unfortunately, the small devices do not put out as much light as a torch and only the immediate five foot area is visible to the elf.
Beltrin casts one of his favorite spells and sends it up the tree the minotaur monk is standing next to. Unfortunately, the only thing that can be seen through the thick webs is the illumination. Nothing can be seen clearly through the thick, dense webs that cover the trees and the areas in between.
Bosk casts a spell and a small fire creature appears next to him at S/19. It has no immediate threat to attack, so it just stands there waiting.
Then, from the darkness, no one could hear it or smell it before it is upon the huge taur. Only Bosk can see the creature as it crawls out from beside a tree, reaches out with a grab that is so lightening fast, if Bosk didn't have Darkvision, he never would have seen it coming.
Bosk gets one free attack (AoO) before it takes four of it's spine covered legs and bind him up to a new condition, Grappled
Bosk can shout out coordinates and the gargantuan creature takes up the area just "east" of him
If You Are Grappled: If you are grappled, you can attempt to break the grapple as a standard action by making a combat maneuver check (DC equal to your opponent's CMD; this does not provoke an attack of opportunity) or Escape Artist check (with a DC equal to your opponent's CMD). If you succeed, you break the grapple and can act normally. Alternatively, if you succeed, you can become the grappler, grappling the other creature (meaning that the other creature cannot freely release the grapple without making a combat maneuver check, while you can). Instead of attempting to break or reverse the grapple, you can take any action that requires only one hand to perform, such as cast a spell or make an attack with a light or one-handed weapon against any creature within your reach, including the creature that is grappling you. See the grappled condition for additional details. If you are pinned, your actions are very limited. See the pinned condition in Conditions for additional details.
Grappled: A grappled creature is restrained by a creature, trap, or effect. Grappled creatures cannot move and take a --4 penalty to Dexterity. A grappled creature takes a --2 penalty on all attack rolls and combat maneuver checks, except those made to grapple or escape a grapple. In addition, grappled creatures can take no action that requires two hands to perform. A grappled character who attempts to cast a spell must make a concentration check (DC 10 + grappler's CMB + spell level), or lose the spell. Grappled creatures cannot make attacks of opportunity.

Zane yells out, "There are some monstrous trees, and I mean HUGE. I'm gonna light this one up some more." Zane reaches out to the square to his north and plants another Light spell on the tree. (reaches to M,15 and places light on the tree's bark.) After casting the simple spell, Zane moves towards 11,12 - S,T his plan is to light up a larger area so things can be seen. He is trying to move silently while tumbling so as to present a lesser target, rather than a big Taur just trudging along.

DM Buzz: All you can hear is Bosk yell out, he is grappled. You can see the other light spells and your area. You do notice violent movement only one square away from you though, as the webs in that area resonate fiercely with the battle beside you.

Zeoll maintains his song. In fact, it inspires him to attack!
Zeoll was standing RIGHT NEXT to Bosk, who is now grappled, so he should be in sight of the spider, right? Moving up to five feet if necessary, Zeoll rears up on his hind legs and lashes out at the spider with his forepaws.
Since the spider is grappling, maybe it loses its dex bonus to AC?
Zeoll attacks at +2, including the bardsong. He hits AC4 and AC6.
"I meant to attack those webs," he declares.
DM Buzz: Unless Zeoll has gained Darkvision recently, no, he can not see the spider. Please make a Reflex Save DC 22 if not using a reach weapon. Natural weapons require the save.
Zeoll (HP35 of 35, AC22, CMD17) d20+9=15 ; d20+9=16 ; d20+19=21 ; Tuesday September 27th, 2011 7:59:39 PM
Zeoll, extra (or anew) ...
If I'd have known I had a 50% miss chance, or maybe even a chance of hitting my friend, I'd have acted differently, I think.
If the kindly DM rules I should stick with my dire attack, then Zeoll's Reflex Save, at +9 with the heroism, is a 15. A hero point spent on a reroll of that would make that a 16, LOL!
If the kindly DM rules I can revise my turn, Zeoll will use a move action to take out his Lens of Perception. Then he uses a standard action to ready get his tower shield up to use for total cover in the event of an attack from any direction. Is that possible if it is pitch dark? Sure! Zeoll listens to tell the direction from which an impending attack is launched! Perception check mod rises from +14 to +19 with the aid of the Lens. a 21!
Hey! Isn't it odd, or maybe kind of dumb, to use a Lens of Detection to aid a hearing check? Of course it is! But that's not my fault -- I completely blame the Pathfinder designers for stupidly combining Spot and Listen into Perception, and then giving the Lens a +5 on Perception check! Idiots! We were better off under the 3.5 rules, which at least were competently designed.
Besides, I have it on good authority* that the Lens acts as a kind of magic eardrum, resonating and amplifying the slightest sounds. :^)

Spider attacks Rnd 2/DM Buzz Tuesday September 27th, 2011 8:19:32 PM
Oh my goodness Cayzle, you sure make DMing interesting. (AND FUN!)
Under the spiders explanation, any creature that attacks it must make the reflex save first, if not using a reach weapon. I think that is to mean, there is always a chance of getting a barb in you, which by itself does not damage, kind of like a cactus spine. The Fort save comes only if you are stuck, weather or not you hit or miss. The reflex save indicates if the spine hits.
An evil dm would make someone apply penalties to their reflex save, since they are moving through difficult terrain and blind, but not this one.
:)
Zeoll (HP35 of 35, AC22, CMD17) d20+11=14 ; d20+11=18 ; d20+9=20 ; d20+9=27 ; Tuesday September 27th, 2011 9:45:18 PM
Okay, so Zeoll attacked with two paws. The first paw was on target, hit AC4, and might have gotten barbed. At +9, Zeoll rolled a 15 on that save vs DC22, used a hero point, and rolled a 16. Now he needs to roll a fort save, I assume with the antitoxin bonus. Zeoll's fort save for the barb that did hit -- Zeoll's fort is a base +4, +2 for heroism, +5 for antitoxin, is a total +11. He rolls a 14 vs an unknown DC. If that fails, he uses another hero point, rolls an 18, which may work.
That's the first paw. I would argue that the second paw did not come close enough to the spider to even be susceptible to its barbs, because I missed my miss chance. However, if the kindly DM rules otherwise (no need to bother the rules board), then here is Zeoll's reflex save and fort save if needed.
Reflex save, second paw, at +9 vs DC 22: a 20. If it is worthwhile to use a hero point, Zeoll will. But maybe having been affected by the first barb, it makes no sense to waste the hero point. In case it does matter, Zeoll uses another hero point, rolls a 27, and sighs with relief.
So with this attack, Zeoll has missed, been barbed, and rolled a 14 (or an 18) vs barb poison. He has used up one, two, or three hero points!
Zeoll (HP35 of 35, AC22, CMD17) Tuesday September 27th, 2011 9:47:38 PM
Zeoll calls out a quick synopsis of his experience to his friends, with his bardic command of language: That the spider is covered with poison barbs, that if you attack, you may well be barbed, so watch out!

Beriothian pulls out his whip, but does not attack the creature right away because of those irksome threads. Holding his whip above his head he swings it around a few times in an attempt to cut as many of these fine threads that can be reached by such a long weapon. As the whip swings in the air Beri moves counterclockwise around Bosk and the spider in an attempt to clear as much of the area as possible for his companions. Being careful to keep his movements outside of the spider's reach, Beri will end just north of Bosk (I am assuming this is S-15, but it depends on how you have the spider positioned). Even though he can not attack this round, he hopes that his actions will allow his companions to be effective.

Hearing the bellow and roar of the two mighty creatures clashing, Beltrin tries to bring his lights to bear on the situation and swipes away at webs to clear his vision. Seeing the monstrous spider entangled with Bosk, he realizes his friend is in dire straits... although strong and wise, it has never been easy for Bosk to slip out of jams. Beltrin decides to help him out with that. He casts a spell and a sheen of oily grease appears on Bosk's armor, making it difficult for even an eight-legged creature to grip him.
------------------------ Standard Action: cast Grease on Bosk's armor. From the Grease spell description:
A creature wearing greased armor or clothing gains a +10 circumstance bonus on Escape Artist checks and combat maneuver checks made to escape a grapple, and to their CMD to avoid being grappled.
Move Action: If necessary, move up to 40' towards the conflict. I'm not entirely sure which squares have been cleared of webs and where the spider is. Beltrin doesn't want to get any closer than necessary, but he'll move as close as he has to to accurately target his spell.
Free Action: Move the Dancing lights to the area of grappling foes.

Seeing no enemies threatening his summoner (creator?), fire elemental looks around in the darkness and smiles as the webs around his body ignite. It always brought him pleasure to see things burn and this place was full of fuel. Burn and slam into things, that was about the extent of what he was able to do, but it brought him great pleasure. When the spider grabs the cleric the he knew it was time to slam. Immediately he sped off towards the spider, aiming for a collision course while the webs around his 4ft body ignited around him, illuminating the way.

All is silent, until a chittering sound is heard off to the "east" and the sound of a mighty sword is heard to bite into the flesh of the creature. Almost immediately, Bosk is grappled but the taur will never go down without a fight, when he gets in another gouge. His shadow conjuration will act upon his behalf and slam the spider, but just as a small ember ignites on it's flesh, one of it's back legs puts out the fire. (Spider makes Ref save: 22)
In the dark still, Zeoll attempts to strike at the giant spider and brushes away some webs. In the process, he gets stabbed by a thin little wire of a hair. He immediately feels the toxins course and pulse up his arm and into his chest and mid song, he vomits all over his front paws, ending his concentration on inspiring the group. Zeoll needs to make a Con based Saving Throw every round for five rounds. DC 22 Highlight to display spoiler: {After thinking about it, it is to ambiguous a ruling to worry about it.}
Zane wants to shed a little more light on the situation, but the current position of the light is still not enough to see the spider. He makes a ton of noise or maybe a half ton of noise as he cart wheels over to maybe get a flank position on the beast.
Beriothian pulls a range weapon and clears away the webbing. It is still dark, but he can easily see the small fire elemental behind him and he stumbles into Zeoll in the dark.
Kyan uses caution and keeps Azrael near, until more light is available and a target is visible. Thanks to the rogue, and the fire elemental giving a nice glowing backdrop of the beast, the arrow would have sunk deep, if not for firing into combat and the creature using the very large minotaur as soft cover, even if it is unintentional on it's part.
Beltrin gets a moment to close in and cast a spell on the one grappled, to better help him escape. His Dancing Lights spell available to travel at his whim.
Restlin can see the spider, but an area of effect spell would endanger their friend also, so he takes the torch he is holding and throws it in the general direction of the battle, hoping if it hit the grappled Grim/Avenger, the torch won't do much damage. With his feeble throw however, that is not an issue, although it does light up some more area behind the spider.
The spider drips blood on it's prey from the savage wounds inflicted upon it. Taking the moist minotaur now covered in grease, it stuffs him head first, waist deep, into it's mouth. The legs and hands of Bosk kick and wave. Now there are very few things he can do. The spider doesn't seem to mind the taste of the spell, perhaps it tastes like olive oil?
With that, the creature makes it's way back to a tree and with a very fast pace, climbs 10' up. Beriothian, Beltrin and Fire Elemental get Attacks of Opportunity. Although it has started climbing the tree, it is still on the floor of the forest, this round.
Bosk is no longer soft cover, but he is still grappled, so -4 when attacking into combat.
Map will be in the mail soon.

Beltrin bellows in anger at seeing his comrade carried off by the massive spider. He aims a blow at the back of the retreating beast. Ichor sprays everywhere as his blade strikes the retreating beast in the abdomen. A barb strikes him in the hand, but his anger pushes down the bile building in his throat as he chases after the beast. He swings his blade again, once more collecting a bevy of sharp barbs in his hands, but his immune system, enhanced by years in the streets of Mudtown, fights back the poison, heck it's weaker than some of the grog he used to drink when he was a mercenary!

The spider is ten feet up in the air, with ten feet still on the ground, it's rear. Bosk has five feet of himself hanging out of the mouth, so to reach Bosk you would need 10'-15'. The tree goes up into the air and out of sight.
As well, Bosk will be caught in that fire ball. It's not like the spider and him are attacking. They are occupying the same space.
I'm sorry. New rules and all. In PF, if you are grappled, you can either try to escape or you get one attack in. Bosk got three attacks in and the first one missed, so the tarantula is not as badly wounded as we all thought.
Sorry, but we all need to learn the new rules together. Thank you for your patience.

Shoot. I'm ahead of my time. The new edition changes that. Below that, in the SRD, the erratta it says: In the " If You Are Grappled..." section, in the fourth sentence, change "any action that requires only one hand to perform" to "any action that doesn't require two hands to perform." In the fourth sentence, change"make an attack with a light or one-handed weapon" to "make an attack or full attack with a light or one-handed weapon" In the

"Make an attack or full attack with a light or one-handed weapon" That means if you have a +6 or better BAB, you could get two attacks in with one light or one-handed weapon ... but not get other weapons or natural attacks in?

When the beast starts to move the rogue quickly lashes his whip at on of the beasts may joints. The whip may not be much use against a spider, but it gives him the necessary reach to strike at the small, vulnerable areas of the spider (sneak attack). As he pulls his whip back Beriothian looks on in terror as the spider almost effortlessly starts dragging his old friend Bosk up the tree. He slides the web covered whip through his fist, collecting a mass of threads in his hand, then drops the whip onto the floor. I think it's time we even this fight out a little, let's see if my small frame is lithe enough to get past his defenses. Beri leaps into the air, careful to avoid the spiders poisons barbs, and lands on the spiders head. With one deft move he ignites the sticky threads and attempts to smear the webs over the the creatures eyes. While it is not expected from the earlier flames that the fire will do much, if any, damage the rogue hopes that the disorient an blind the spider, making it almost impossible for it to climb and increasing the difficulty of maintaining a grapple. Before even seeing the result Beri has his rapiers drawn (free action) and prepares for whatever tricks the creature may have.
AoO attack = 24 whip damage = 0 (natural armor is too high) AoO sneak attack damage = 16 (lethal)
touch attack (web) = 21 unarmed sneak attack damage = 8 (assuming I'm flanking corner to corner... top front head to the spiders butt. Really heard to figure out since the spider is half in the tree half on the ground)

I don't think you occupy the same space when you grapple
From grapple:
If you successfully grapple a creature that is not adjacent to you, move that creature to an adjacent open space (if no space is available, your grapple fails
and From Move, under grapple: You can move both yourself and your target up to half your speed. At the end of your movement, you can place your target in any square adjacent to you
So Bosk would be in the vertical square above the spider on the tree, 10' up and out of the fireball. Of course, if the tree is set on fire than he'll be in a tree that's on fire =)
DM Buzz: I apologize, but that is not what the text says! It clearly states, that the grappler CAN place the grappled in an adjacent square. No where in there does it say it will or has to, so they are still occupying the same space. Cayzle already attempted the thought, but as I said, the wording is clear.
Voting-To-Ban-Grapple-To-Avoid-Rule-Headaches Jon: Did that go to the rule board? It clearly states that you have place the grappled target in an adjacent open space, the same space is not adjacent or open. The "can" you're referring to is because you "can move both yourself and your target". Unless I'm missing something, entirely possible, no where does it state that you can occupy the same space. I believe in 3.5 it was same space but in Pathfinder is must be adjacent
DM Buzz: No, I did not take it to the rules board, but I will not be offended if you want to. Also, if you don't like the rules, feel free to write Jerry a letter. I'm sure he would love to hear from you. :)
Jon: I just don't want to fireball Bosk by accident. I'll throw it up on the rules board. It will be good to know anyways, but I thinks it's one of the 3.5->Pathfinder chang. I don't think Jerry works for Paizo in the "ambiguous rules" department =)

Alright, it has been taken to the rules board and I have decided.
According to the wording, if someone is pinned, they are bound and a bound person is helpless.
Helpless A helpless character is paralyzed, held, bound, sleeping, unconscious, or otherwise completely at an opponent's mercy. A helpless target is treated as having a Dexterity of 0 (--5 modifier). Melee attacks against a helpless target get a +4 bonus (equivalent to attacking a prone target). Ranged attacks get no special bonus against helpless targets. Rogues can sneak attack helpless targets.
Pinned A pinned creature is tightly bound and can take few actions. A pinned creature cannot move and is denied its Dexterity bonus*. A pinned character also takes an additional --4 penalty to his Armor Class. A pinned creature is limited in the actions that it can take. A pinned creature can always attempt to free itself, usually through a combat maneuver check or Escape Artist check. A pinned creature can take verbal and mental actions, but cannot cast any spells that require a somatic or material component. A pinned character who attempts to cast a spell must make a concentration check (DC 10 + grappler's CMB + spell level) or lose the spell. Pinned is a more severe version of grappled, and their effects do not stack.
So, a grappling creature shares the same space with the grappled creature, until that creature chooses to set the grappled in an adjacent square. At least, if they are pinned...
As far as I can see, it looks like a typo was made, because a pinned person should also have a Dex of 0 instead of just being denied their dex bonus. The AC adjustment equals the to hit bonus, so they got that correct.
If you want to redo Restlin's action, you have until Sunday evening to do it. If not, Monday morning, Bosk will need to make a Reflex Save for the Fireball spell, along with the spider on Monday morning.
Have a great weekend!

Yeah, that was teh suck, so to speak. The fully colored in circles were much better, Buzz. Sorry to complain.
In the dark still, Zeoll attempts to strike at the giant spider and brushes away some webs. In the process, he gets stabbed by a thin little wire of a hair. He immediately feels the toxins course and pulse up his arm and into his chest and mid song, he vomits all over his front paws, ending his concentration on inspiring the group. Zeoll needs to make a Con based Saving Throw every round for five rounds. DC 22 Highlight to display spoiler: {After thinking about it, it is to ambiguous a ruling to worry about it.}
Zane wants to shed a little more light on the situation, but the current position of the light is still not enough to see the spider.
The creature pins Bosk down, preventing further attempts at struggle. Little does it know, his prey has friends.
Bosk is no longer soft cover, but he is still grappled, so -4 when attacking into combat.
Round 3
Beltrin does not get an attack of opportunity and attempts to land a blow, but misses.. After looking at your paper, I see on your sheet, you are +7 to hit and on your post you are at +10, why is this? I can only assume, it is from a Flank or something, but there was no AoO and no way to charge, sorry my friend. I had to fix the post.
Bosk attempts to break free and just as he thinks he is about to, the tarantula tightens it's grip, holding him fast and pinned.
Zeoll lost his compassion for the fight almost as fast as the contents of his stomach. He attempts to choke the dry heaves back so as to continue the fight. One save successful. If next one fails, start all over again.
Zane pulls a javelin. He casts another Light spell, dispelling his other one. Can't attack after casting a spell.
Restlin attempts to thwart the spiders escape route so he fireballs the nearest tree in sight. The tree does not appear to catch fire however. Perhaps because it is not entirely real.
Kyan being the hero that he is, has Azrael protect the vulnerable bard as he moves in to attack the beast. Avoiding the poison, he lands 17 damage.
Beriothian thinks about some acrobatic feats of wonder, but realizes, he has nothing in his hands to ignite the webbing with, darn it, so instead, he uses a stone egg to cast a Color Spray at the creature. Something that Beri didn't know however, would be, if you don't have a mind, a Color Spray doesn't matter. Immune to mind effects due to intelligence of --.
The spider seems to be unimpressed with the activity around it and may feel a bit vulnerable, so after maintaining it's grapple on Bosk, it lashes out with huge teeth to rip into the huge grappled minotaur doing 29 damage
Map will be out this morning.

Q: What is the -4 for again?
DM Buzz: Oops. My bad again. I edited text above to fix this. Thank you. :)

Now that Bosk is no longer in battle, he feels the thousands of little hairs from the spider, sticking into him in numerous places. Like little cactus spines. It is going to take a bit of work to get all those suckers out. Digging into the belly of the dead crature doesn't help much either. The slime and gore is disgusting. For those that want to salvage poison from the beast, the following rolls need to be made.
A Druid with Knowledge Nature needs a DC 20 to extract venom. Everyone else needs a Knowledge Nature DC 25.
The glands in the skin are like sebatious glands for sweat. Very delicate and hard to manage. It's primary sack is full of venom, but one small misstep could ruin the toxin. Once the sack is opened and the venom is exposed to air, it has a duration of one hour before it's toxcity runs out. However, an alchemist using it to create Anti-Toxins should be able to get 10 or maybe 20 vials of the good stuff.
The rest of the group does various things to clean each other up. Soon, it is discovered that the key is not in the belly of this beast.
Perception DC 30

Kyan takes the time to heal the minotaur up a bit.
Everyone else however, still can not find the key. Some mention it might be in one of the trees or even in the webbing.
Restlin attempts to Detect Magic and the area is overwhelming. He can not discern one part of the arena from the other. It is all, very magical.
It looks like the trees in here are over a hundred feet tall, in the room and looking around, there are eight total trees.
Since the end of round four, digging through the spider has cost you a total of three minutes.
Bosk did not need to use his Goblin Seal.

Kyan spends about 30 more seconds of the time Bosk is examining the spider jabbing away at the minotaur's wounds with his healing wand.
Once only a few scraps and bruises remain on the taur, Kyan puts the wand away and then, just because Malaphaz seems to be a bit of a jerk, goes over to the cage the spider was in to peer at the lock inside to make sure the key isn't just sitting in the lock, waiting to be turned.

Zhould zou ztay or zhould zou go now?/DM Buzz Friday October 7th, 2011 10:41:33 AM
After a few minutes using a wand of curing, Kyan searches around for what isn't here. Along the boarders of where the arena should be are high, sheer walls of bushes and vines, seemingly unpassable. For someone that could do so naturally, stepping into the "walls", it could seem to go on forever.
Restlin can see all kinds of different patterns in his Detect Magic spell, but he needs to roll a Knowledge Arcana check to fully comprehend what he is looking at.
Getting up the first forty feet of tree isn't easy, but Beltrin takes his time to avoid danger. Moving spider webs out of his way, soon, he becomes covered in the stuff, but it does not interfere with his hands, if anything, they are now a little more sticky. Getting to the top of the tree and using the various illumination in the area, he can now see, dangling in the webs between two of the massive, yet artificial trees, a cocoon looking object, wrapped tightly between thick strands of webbing. Highlight to display spoiler: { Keith, when you updated your header, all of your stats (except HP's) went up instead of down. You said you removed the buffs from your header?}
Standing out of the way, Zane absent mindedly rubs the small wound that remains from the previous battle with the two headed troll, likely glad, he wasn't the initial target twice of the caged creatures.
Beriothian helps with the spider and offers to carry the poison gland from the Giant Tarantula, in his magical bag of holding.
Very grateful for all the help, Bosk secures the precious cargo of liquid toxins and helps the others look for the key.
Walking around as well, Zeoll too can see the high hedges that surround the arena area. He can't pass in and out of the thick brush with ease like someone that has a little more skill in the druidic arts. He casts a spell that does not ping his Secret Door detection.
After another minute or two, the key is retrieved and everyone is back in cage #6. The lock in the back of the cell, just as ornate as the lock in cell five. The key slips easily into the hole and the cage disappears, allowing everyone to once again move about the room.
In the center of the arena, the glowing golden circle now has the number five and number six missing from the runes.
Malaphaz comes loud and clear through the air.
"Zhe destruction, zou all can perform iz outztanding! Wealth! You dezerve to be properly rewarded!"
The golden sphere has two small holes open up on each side of it. Before anyone has a chance to look in, you are all posed with a question from the "ring master" of this circus.
"Ztay! Killz zeees others beazts! Collect more treazurez! However, if all are weary, you might find rezt when you enter your next tezt!
The hole on the left holds a solid gold urn with no lid upon it. Inside the urn is many White Chits (fifteen total) and two Red Chits.
The hole on the right has a blue satin pillow with 1 Orange Chit and two Red Chits, resting easily upon it.
There also seems to be spaces for even more of these holes, now unaccessable.
"DEZIDE! ZTAY AND FIGHT OR MOVE ALONG!"

"From what this ring said," Restlin beings, "we can choose to rest before the next test, not before the next beast. This ring seems to put a lot of importance in the words it chooses. Last time we didn't listen carefully enough we had to fight our way through 16 skeletons.
"That said, I am absolutely against fighting the medusa. We can't undo a flesh-to-stone affect and that bag of holding isn't going to hold a Bosk statue to take care of him later. Poison doesn't seem to be an an issue for some of us. Maybe we can take that centipede out. So long as we're not taking the medusa or elemental on, I'm good for another critter."
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:22/16/16 HP:57/57 CMD = 22 Friday October 7th, 2011 8:13:18 PM I am good for a centipede, but I agree with Bosk that going after the Medusa would be pushing our luck. Even if we knew we could restore someone when we get back we still have what is likely the hardest test coming up after this, and we will need everyone for that. By the way, if we are fighting a centipede I am going to use a sunrod before it enters.
ooc: before we choose, can we get a quick review on the size of the centipede and the rules for grappling such a thing (I don't think a centipede's legs are built in a way that would particularly help with grappling, but most of the ones I've seen are only an inch long)?
Beltrin (Keith) AC: 19/15/19 HP: 56/56 CMD: 20 Spells Friday October 7th, 2011 8:59:32 PM "Zane, I think that the rest that Mala-whatsit is talking about is the eternal kind.... I think we either fight or get out of the ring. I'm up for another one. I actually think that the elemental might be okay, since at least we know that it will be a big clobbering machine. The centipede would be fine with me too."
OOC: Buzz, the reason that my stats went up were that the fatigued condition had expired. The buffs that expired actually didn't boost any of my stats, just Bosk's. The mirror image was the only useful thing that I had cast on myself.

The group talks more about what next to do. Some believe their test will be over after this arena is finished, but others that were listening can tell, Maliphaz has more in store for the group after the arena is finished.
Indeed, Maliphaz even mentioned that, after moving on and leaving behind the arena, during your next test, you will have an opportunity to rest.
So, is the group ready to take on another one or two creatures without resting or have they decided to move on to the next phase of their adventure inside a ring?

Tunnel to nowhere/DM Buzz Tuesday October 11th, 2011 1:25:27 PM
The group gathers around in the center of the arena and all shout the number three. The cell disappears from off to the side and comes crashing down upon you all again.
All is almost dark, except for those that carry items like torches and sunrods. Immediately, the sensation of things touching you want to creep you out, but from the light, you can see, you are in a tunnel, with the roots from artificial plants sticking out at various lengths, angles and thickness, all around you. The smell of damp earth is pleasing to some and anyone with a basic knowledge nature could tell, the group is under a forest floor, where a myriad of insects would dwell.
The tunnel you all stand in is fifteen feet in diameter and the terrain is considered rough or difficult. It goes off into the unknown where the tunnel grows larger, to twenty feet in diameter.
Perception checks are now necessary.

He looks at the ceiling to determine if it could hold the weight, but is completely clueless. He draws a rapier with his free hand and moves to e-31. Once in place he prepares himself for the monster to attack suddenly.
ooc: am I standing at B-30? The color is a little different than previous maps so I wanted to double check. Also, I know that one of those rolls was an accidental click, but three ones in a row?! Does Wardd think Beri needs a greater challenge or something?

Checking in! Feel better, Buzz!
The long and winding road/DM Buzz Friday October 14th, 2011 4:31:58 PM
The tunnels are in no way, sharp corners. Their sides flake away dirt as the roots they are adheared to are brushed away by the adventurers. Soon, hair is dirty and clothes are soiled.
Kyan can see, they are in the beginning of an earthen tunnel or perhaps a dead end is more accurate. He moves a few feet forward anticipating anything, drawing his edged blade. Azrael without being given a command follows faithfully.
Bosk knows the time is short on the spell that makes him huge, but retrieving the key takes longer then expected. His quick thinking soon puts him at ease. The ceiling is within reach and visible. He casts a spell. Highlight to display spoiler: {No need to put DM Sanity notes in spoilers. It just slows my posts down, but thanks for trying to make the board pretty. :)}
Beltrin casts a valuable spell improving the vision for most, down the tunnel and moves to a new location.
Zeoll is the only one that can hear it's chitinous movements, but just barely. He isn't sure how far away it is, but with the distance and conditions of these tunnels, it isn't very close yet.
Restlin casts a spell on himself and moves right up to stand in the Monk Minotaurs square. Since they are not in battle, this is possible, for now.
Zane casts a spell on himself and remains where he is, looking down at the wizard directly in front of him.
Beriothian makes some movement while drawing weapons. He attempts to gather information by sight or sound, but left dependant on the perceptive liontaur.
Time might go by faster then the adventurers like, if the monster is as far away as suspected.
Highlight to display spoiler: { I have discovered using "paint" for maps, the color degrades over time, like real paint. If you go back through all your old maps, you will see differences in the colors, especially the dark ones like red and purple.}

Beltrin (Keith) AC: 19/15/19 HP: 56/56 CMD: 20 Spells Friday October 14th, 2011 8:07:37 PM
Seeing the liontaur cock his head, asks "Can you tell which tunnel it's down? If it's to the left, we might be able to put half of us on either side of the mouth and surround it when it comes out." Beltrin scrambles through the loose dirt, trying to get in position to see down the tunnel to the left, making sure that his sword is at the ready.
----------------------------------- Double move action to get to K-28 (I think that's right for 80 feet at half-speed due to difficult terrain) Free Action: move dancing lights to G-21 Free Action: Draw Greatsword if it wasn't already out (I don't think that I re-sheathed it, but it doesn't hurt to be sure)
Bonded item can cast 1 spell from spell book once/day
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:22/16/16 HP:57/57 CMD = 22 Friday October 14th, 2011 11:39:37 PM
ooc: I think you forgot to move Beriothian last round.
DM Buzz: I sure did my friend. My apologies! Please consider your character there and make further movement from that position. I will correct on next map. :)
Zeoll (HP35 of 35, AC22, CMD17) d20+14=16 Saturday October 15th, 2011 10:07:41 AM
OOC Note to Beltrin: You did not specify the form of your Dancing Lights: "torches ... up to four glowing spheres of light ... one faintly glowing, vaguely humanoid shape." Which did you pick?
Zeoll puts away his lens and then casts Ghost Sound to be centered on the Dancing Lights. He uses the spell to mimic the sounds a person would make while walking: footsteps, breathing, clink of armor, some words now and then, like, "Where is that thing?"
He stays close to Beltrin (five foot step forward) and whispers to his friends, "Maybe we can fool the monsterr into attacking the lights."
If Beltrin did not pick the man-shaped thing, Zeoll suggests he recast the spell to make it look man-like.
Zeoll's perception check for this round (no lens): 16

Bosk looks around, trusting in his dark vision to spot the creature should it try to sneak up on them. He stays silent to not interfere with those able to hear the bug. Bosk readies to cast a Bane spell the moment he sees the creature.

Beriothian (Will)-- AC:22/16/16 HP:57/57 CMD = 22 Saturday October 15th, 2011 10:54:10 PM
Beriothian advances to g-30 to and slides the base of his sunrod deep into the soft earth. Hopefully this centipede will not be able to drag away a part member the way the spider did, be even if it can the rogue trusts that the magical lights will keep up with the centipede. Drawing his second rapier Beri waits in silence for the creature to strike.

Kyan has Azrael position himself at G27 and wait while he moves to J28. If the giant bug hasn't shown itself yet he'll sheath his sword and take out his bow again, holding an arrow ready to hopefully get a shot off on the centipede the moment it comes within the light.
Slow progress/DM Buzz Monday October 17th, 2011 3:55:00 PM Beltrin asks those more skilled in perception, what they might be hearing. With the grace of a barbarian, he can move faster then some.
Zeoll removes from his hands a valuable magical item and asks the barbarian wizard for a different type of spell. One he might can compliment.
While Zane moves, he pulls out a missile weapon and follows the others.
Bosk doesn't move, but readies an action, waiting for the creature to show it's self.
Beriothian moves and places his illumination into the semi soft soil. It stands rigid and fixed in the tunnel wall.
Kyan has plenty of time, to make movement and pull his bow. Azrael mindfully does as he is told.
Not much else is heard through the tunnels.

The group cautiously approches. Those with a decent perception now know, it is closer then before and not to the left of the group, but ahead and to the right. The distance however, is still to far away to guess at.
The obstacles of the tunnels continue to impede the path way and the group now has a fine layer of earth all over their body.

Remembering the webs from before Beri quickly considers the earth that is now covering the group to determine if this will provide any camouflage to the group, and whether it may also cause them any hindrances. He also listens carefully to determine if the centipede is crawling, or digging a new tunnel to advance on the group.
ooc: What is that little stick figure on the map? I'll post my move action once I see if everyone else is advancing or standing their ground.

***
Restlin continues to wait for their foe to show itself. He casts prestidigitation and looks noticeably more comfortable as the layer of dirt on him falls away.
DM Buzz: Yes. Make sure it is legal please. :)
Beltrin (Keith) AC: 19/15/19 HP: 56/56 CMD: 20 Spells Tuesday October 18th, 2011 10:25:18 PM "If it's coming from the right, I think we should get some of us off to the left. That thing was huge, it's going to take up most of the tunnel and there won't be room for all of us to get our whacks in on it."
Beltrin casts a spell and seemingly winks out of existence. He moves the dancing lighted man off to the tunnel mouth to the right and starts to make his way to the left-hand tunnel.
OOC: I don't know the exact size, but I'm guessing the centipede is just as big as the spider, so it'll fill the whole tunnel. Out of our damage dealers, Kyan's the only one that's really optimized for ranged combat, so I think we need to maximize the open space around it. We might even be able to get it to the point where Beri can get behind it for a sneak attack. ------------------------------ Standard action: Cast Invisibility Move action: move to H-26 Free action: move dancing lights to J-17

The tunnels go silent/DM Buzz d20-4=-3 ; Wednesday October 19th, 2011 4:01:08 PM
The creature is heard by all, somewhere in the distance. It's chitinous carapace grinding against each other like metal plates. Soon though, it is heard to stop.
Zane uses unknown power to charge his hands after attempting to look around the far corner. He can see, beyond the magical illumination, more darkness. Please be specific when using magical powers, abilities or spells.
Kyan and Azrael "stay".
Beriothian is thoughtful on the terrain. If one were not cautious, battle in these quarters could obscur vision. Reflex save DC 12 or be blinded for 1d3 rounds. If a creature were invisible, they would have less concealment, with the dirt continuously falling down upon them. Perception skills are harder to use, with the twisting earth and root infested tunnel. However, these conditions might not be the same, in the darker sections of the tunnels, left unseen. Highlight to display spoiler: {Stick figure is the Dancing Lights spell.}
Restlin cleans himself up a bit as he waits for the others, more prone to not being eaten alive by giant insects, to move up.
Beltrin throws out suggestions on how to deal with a gargantuan creature like this forest centipede. The elf rogues words prove true as Beltrin makes movement and dirt falls upon him, his concealment is less then if he wasn't sprinkled with earth.
Bosk waits to see how the creature approaches. He stands defensively in anticipation.
There is no more sound from the dark tunnels. Since before, it's movements were obvious, it must now be in whatever spot or position it wants to be in. Clearly, the beast waits for the prey to approach at this time.
As for the idea about the magical light with sounds, the ranger and druid would likely know, the vague humanoid light is clearly not a creature nor would it be remotely edible for such a beast. There may want to be a fall back plan, just in case, this does not work.

-------------- I don't think that my move last round got updated on the map, Beltrin should have started at H-26, no biggie though.

Restlin will move forward, though he's careful to stay away from the walls of this tunnel. Not only is he concerned of giant centipedes bursting through them, it also means more dirt getting on his clothes. All in all, he considers both these possibilities unseemly.
He steps forward to I-21 and re-prestidigitizes off any newly acquired dirt.
