Welcome to Bonetown

Co-DM Cayzle  d20+1=2 ;

The wharf is a big one, the biggest in Bonetown. It extends over 150 feet into the bay, and is about 15 feet wide the whole way. Five ships are tied up on both sides of the dock at the moment, and there is still room for another one or two.

Karas thinks about exploring the town, such as it is, but first the wharf must be traversed.

Spire walks the dock, thinking about how careful he will be to look for danger once he is ashore. He does not suspect that danger that awaits the group before our heroes will be able to reach dry land. In his imagination, the wharf is a-bustle with activity. But in fact, at this early hour, the wharf is deserted, as sailors of all sorts sleep off their exertions and revels of the night.

Captain Renfield rushed here, sailing through the night, to make his important meeting with the Harbormaster, and thanks to a friendly tide, has arrived soon after dawn. No doubt the early hour explains why the crew bunked down as soon as they made it to port.

Dilantar is also thinking of talking with his new comrades once they are all on land. But there are other ships looming tall over the dock on both sides, transforming the pier into a narrow alleyway. A more dangerous one, maybe than could be found anywhere else this side of Osto, that notorious thieves' den.

Yel'kno, more aware, maybe of the dangers of this place, looks up and down the wharf as he prepares to leave the Lionfish. But does he notice [with a perception check of 12] the danger ahead? The crew of a vessel in poor repair, looking down at the wharf and the newcomers so blithely headed for shore?

Tinius says his fare-wells, and stays with the group, bringing up the rear as he walks with his new comrades toward shore. Koz'Um follows him.

A single stealth check will suffice for our antagonists ... a 2! They have no ability to sneak, as four sailors approach down a gangplank as you walk past a ship 100 ft from shore. Another four clamber down behind you, throwing knotted ropes and descending as the leader of the rough sailors challenges you.

"So, we are needin' new blood on our ship. We're signing you all up to crew for the Roustabout. No scuffles now, my fine fellows, and we'll have you taking good places aboard in a snap!"

There are tall ships on both sides, restricting vision. There are four tough sailors before, you and four more behind. Thanks to Yel'kno's thoughtful perception and watchful gaze, you are not surprised.

The men ahead didn't try very hard to disguise the fact that they were blocking the way. Karas slows his run to a halt, a little disheartened that he had been interrupted. Surely he hadn't come across trouble so soon after making port.

"We're signing you all up to crew for the Roustabout."

Casting a glance over his shoulder Karas could see the other passengers who had disembarked a little further back down the wharf. Unfortunately more men had dropped down behind them to box everyone in.

"...snap!"

Karas looks back at the man who just finished speaking and pulls up his hood.

"I didn't run from one group of snakes to fall in with another. Don't test me."

Spire sighs deeply, reaching into his arcane reserve and relishing in the power. It had been too long since he had cast a decent spell, and he was itching for these men to give him a reason to do so. His eyebrow raises as the human spoke to them in such a manner, but he hoped for the complete opposite. These men wanted to take him onto a dirty pirate boat? He'd like to see them try.

Moving slowly towards the middle of the group of passengers, Spire calls out, "Well, gentlemen, clearly we are at a crossroads. I doubt many of us wish to return to the seas so soon after our landing, and so the question arises; do you think you can defeat us?"

As Spire slowly paces, he looks at each of the men surrounding them. (Nature check of 18 to evaluate enemies' prowess.)

Baird, feel free to place yourself with the group, or you may choose to come up behind the four thugs in the rear. Your choice. If you want to sneak up behind, roll a stealth check.

Yel'kno slows his space as their path is blocked and turns to look over his shoulder at the sounds of the four other men coming up behind them. He sighs, his hand gripping his bow, as he looks at the sailors boxing them in and at his new found companions. Arrived in Bonetown not half an hour and already someone is trying to press gang them in to service? This should be a fun place.

Emboldened by the words of his peers, Yel'kno nods towards the speaker, the presumed leader of the band, "Indeed... you'll find that this is a fish too big for you fry. Turn and go back to your boat before it's less even more crew."

Dilantar sighs as he reaches into his pouch and grabs a handful vials without looking at them. As he drinks the contents of a vial that is glowing slightly green(move action - grab the vials, standard to drink it), his eyes seem to dilate and turn catlike, while he seems to grow bulkier and lithe. He says in a slightly animal like voice, "Gentlemen, you really should just leave us alone, we don't wish for any trouble on our first day here, but we will finish whatever you start" Dilantar seems ready to fight. He quickly apologizes to his companions, "I am sorry for saying something so aggressive, but I don't think we can get out of this peacfully"

Baird had quickly gathered his things and said his few goodbyes below deck and then quickly become lost in thought about his dream from the previous night ignoring almost all of his surroundings and simply moving with whatever group he found himself in. At sound of voices holding aggressive tones Baird became aware of his surroundings, and surrounders at this point, once again. "Uh yeah, you should leave us alone. We can fight......and stuff."

Tinius moves to one side of the group to get a clear view of the speaker for the crew of the Roustabout, but doesn't move to the front. I am sure the Roustabout is a fine ship and will no doubt find ample men to fill its crew in the drinking halls of these Bones, but you cannot have my men here. This day we are due for a meeting with Captain Reichild and the Harbormaster in a little more than half an hour. I certainly don't like the prospects for the man that keeps the Harbormaster waiting, do you?

"Look here," he said addressing the foremost of the pirates. "Are you to inflict a the pain upon us that will be truly doubled upon your own soul for the evil deeds you commit! Stay! begone from here, search for prey else where."

[DM OOC to Spire: Yes, you can make knowledge checks to identify the strengths and weaknesses of monsters. For people, the required Knowledge check is Know (Geography), as per the skill description. The DC for a common creature, such as humans or goblins, is 5+CR. Your roll is good enough to tell you that humans are versatile and adaptable, and they have potentially great capabilities or not, depending on their class levels. You may also read over the rules for humans in the core rulebook. And they all seem pretty Tough and Dodgy.]

Karas issues a warning.

Dilantar drinks a magic concoction.

Spire identifies them all as humans.

Tinius offers logic, and a subtle threat.

Yel'kno tries to influence them through intimidation. However, doing so would take a full minute, and you do not have that much time.

Koz'Um Dawl would like to talk with the ruffians, and maybe convince them to back down, but per the rules, "Diplomacy is generally ineffective ... against creatures that intend to harm you or your allies in the immediate future." Your kindly DM is sorry to see you waste your natural 20!

Baird attempts to help his friends to seek an accommodation, but his efforts fall short.

Your DM is sorry to quash your attempts at negotiation, and hopes this will not deter you from future attempts, but in this case, the ruffians are intent on doing you harm.

The chief ruffian pauses a moment to explain the situation -- your efforts have gained you that much, at least. "It's nothing personal, you see," the good-natured fellow says as he steps forward, drawing a sap and swinging at Dilantar. "But we want out of our indenture, and the only way to get out is to find other sailers to take our places."

Another one barks as he attacks, "Yeah, we just want you suckers to labor painfully in our places for no reward."

Where a group of newcomers was in the process of being unlawfully pressganged into service aboard what he suspected was a less than honorable vessel. Normally Rogar Stonefist couldn't fight off so many men but the newcomers were putting up a fight of their own. So maybe this time he could do something.

A dwarf runs out of the crowd. He's 4' 6" tall, bald with symbols tattood upon his head. Instead of the traditional long beard, Rogar's was trimmed to a neat black gotee. His chest was bare except for a long scarf criss crossing his torso. The scarf started at one wrist, coiling up his arm. The scarf continued criss crossing his chest several times before coiling down the other arm and ending at the wrist. Rogar wore loose fitting brown pants and sandals.

Rogar headed straight for the nearest ruffian. He held a thick stick in one hand while his other was empty. His thick meaty fist lashed out at the ruffian's thigh. Just before connecting, Rogar angled his fist to drive his knuckle into a pressure point.

"Excuse me my good man but these gentlemen seem to have declined your job offer."

However, Thugs 2 and 3 are! They try to save with rolls of 4 and 5, so both take the full 5, and are aflame. Thug 2, moreover, falls down!

In what is getting to be a pattern, Karas and Yel'kno swing and miss.

Dilantar steps back and aims his crossbow. He sees that Thugs 1 and 2 are down, and Karas is giving soft cover to Thug 3, so he shoots at Thug 4, at whom he has a clear shot. He hits for 2.

Baird takes a morningstar poke and misses.

Koz'Um Dawl casts another cure, this time on Spire (3 hp healed with the extra +1).

Thugs 1 and 2 are down, and Thug 2 is on fire. So is Thug 3. Thug 4 is crippled. Demoralized, Thug 3 withdraws, moving while on fire away. Rogar you may make an Attack of Opportunity on Thug 3 as he flees, if you like.

Thug 4 is too crippled to run, so he takes a step forward to Spire and swings, snarling, "I'll take you down, mage!" His attack, however, misses Spire by 1.

In the back, the story is different. Thugs 5, 6, 7, and 8 are doing fine, and only Thug 5 is even wounded. Plus they have knocked Tinius down! They attack, hitting AC20 (hits Yel'kno), AC18 (hits Yel'kno), chases and hits AC17 (hits Koz'Um Dawl), and AC8 (misses Baird).

Yel'kno takes 3 hp nonlethal damage, bringing him to 11 of 12. Then he takes another 6 nonlethal damage, knocking him DOWN. Koz'Um Dawl takes 4 hp nonlethal damage.

Thug 1 - down 18 - DOWN
Thug 2 - down 19 - DOWN

Feeling invigorated by the dwarf's healing, he gives him a quick nod and laughs as the Thug misses him once more. "If that is your intention, you don't seem to be doing very well!" Drawing some rather simple (at least to him) arcane symbols in the air, a blast of force shoots out at the man who just missed him, blasting him in the chest.

Once again Rogar is reminded how great it is to be a dwarf. He never expected flames to burst into thin air. Luckily he was a dwarf and the flames just shot right over his head. Instead of going after the pirate that Rogar just crippled, he takes a quick scan of the battlefield. The situation is not a good one. The pirates seem to be a lot more orginized than he would have expected them to be. Rogar needed to cause some chaos. He turns away from the man he crippled and instead runs at another that in a less than honorable fashion, hit a man from behind. Rogar jumps into the air and comes down with a hard kick to a pirate.

However, I have a formula for a curing extract and now have it prepared, so if we get into any more conflicts today, please help one of our companions before me. It was my fault that I did not have it prepared, a lapse I don't into to repeat. I hope I can consider you my friend." Dilantar says this last bit with a hopeful look in his eye. Come back and finish what you started!!" He goes to draw another arrow, but decides against it as the men run away. He wipes his brow, struggling to regain his composure. It had been a long time since he had unleashed that much magic, and his entire frame shook with a combination of adrenalin and exhaustion. Taking a few deep breaths, he barely hears Dilantar's offer for healing. He does a quick check of himself, and feels no need for the healing offered. "Perhaps you should take care of those who cannot vouch for themselves," he says to the Drow, gesturing to the two men collapsed on the ground. The adrenaline in his system is quickly pushed out by anger, recalling how useless some had been during the battle. He decided against bringing it up, not wanting to cause strife among the people he would be travelling with so early. "Get them on their feet so we can get off this damnable wharf. Dilantar immediately sets about to make a healong concoction. [OOC: How long does that take?] He thanks Koz'Um Dawl and offers his thoughts for the future. He moves to help the fallen and asks Rogar about a possible refuge.

Spire takes some deep breaths and then thinks about his fallen comrades. At this point, Karas, Tinius, and Yel'kno are all unconscious! Spire is eager to get them walking, and to get the entire group ashore.

Rogar knows Bonetown too well, even though he has only been here a week or so. He keeps alert even after danger has seemingly passed, and then urges speed on the group. He seems to be looking around for someone. Perhaps he is unsure whether he is free to offer the hospitality of Brother Engev to complete strangers.

Rogar does see Brother Engev coming up, surrounded by tough-looking warriors in chain mail and shields. They wear black armbands, maybe an insignia or gang marker?

Brother Engev is a young cleric in a threadbare robe. He says that he ran to get the Harbormaster guards as soon as he saw what was happening. He introduces himself, calls Rogar by name, and tells him he did well. The guards are very matter of fact, and they quickly figure out what has happened.

"You were lucky," says one of the Harbor guards to you all. "Keep your heads down. Try not to look like you just got off the boat. Do you have a place to stay?"

Without waiting for an answer, he shouts really loudly: "I'll be back in 10 minutes, and if there are any bodies left here, they get kicked into the harbor!"

Brother Engev looks you all over. He casts quick cures on Karas, Tinius, and Yel'kno to get them on their feet. "No worries, officer. They can squeeze in at my home."

The guard looks at the monk's threadbare garb, then at your well-equipped new gear. "Maybe you had better stay at a one of the common houses, if you have the gold. Safer, and probably fewer rats and bugs." He gives you directions to get to two "common houses." He exudes an attitude of not really caring either way, though.

Karas is happy to accept the missionary's hospitality.

Dilantar is still grappling with the implications of friendly fire (literally).

Spire volunteers to pay for lodging at a common house.

Yel'kno votes to stay at Brother Engev's house, and urges Spire to be more careful about money.

Koz'Um Dawl agrees, eager to befriend a fellow cleric.

[OOC: However, your humble DM must admit that he seems to have unintentionally misled you. Your new friend and companion, Rogar, is indeed a dwarf. Brother Engev, however, is a human.]

The good brother nods, and mentions to Spire that donations are always welcome! Moreover, he is glad to be of service, and perhaps there will be a service that you all can perform to return the favor.

He leads you through a warren of narrow roads and alleys that seem decrepit although none of the buildings could be more than a year old. The docks themselves seem no worse than those of many a fishing village, aside from the stout ships that are as numerous at pier as fishing vessels. But the town itself, if you can call it that, has as many raw pubs as stores and warehouses put together. Although it is but morning, you see a man peeing in the street, a party of staggering revelers finely dressed in Aisildur garb, five centaurs with scimitars hauling a huge chest and glaring at everyone else, and a few naked children peeking out from the narrowest of alleyways.

Brother Engev, seemingly failing to notice all this, explains that he is a servant of Pantheon, brought here to preach the advantages of law and order as a missionary to the unenlightened. "So far people tend to remain unenlightened," he expalins, "aside from some who converted while wounded, only to relapse after curing." He sighs.

You get to his house, a small cottage, half of which is devoted to a ground floor chapel sized no bigger than ten by ten. "It is small," Engev admits, "but so far it has served to fit all who wished to worship."

He is glad to meet a cleric of Alemi, a god allied with his own. He wonders if anyone here is a devotee of Pantheon, by any chance? There is a hopeful tone in his voice that is a little pitiful, too.

OOC to Rogar: Please Highlight to display spoiler: {The service Engev mentions, you think, is likely related to his fellow missionary, a bookish fellow who has recently gone missing. Also, your own bed is in a crawlspace under the eaves, reached by a narrow ladder.}

Yel'kno says in the temple while keeping matters of religeon to himself. His own faith did not always mesh well with the more established Gods and he had no desire for conflict.

Spire bites his tongue as the rest of the former passengers thank Engrev for their lodgings. His coin purse weighs heavily against his side, and he has trouble not barking at them all to get to the damn common houses. His spirits fall as he sees the house they will be staying in, and accidentally lets slip, "Well, it certainly is... humble." A sour taste rises in his mouth as the rest offer their services, slightly less enthusiastic about helping the clergy, but keeps his mouth shut, thinking perhaps it will lead somewhere.

"Brother Engev's assistant has gone missing. We were looking for him when I saw your trouble with the pirates. I didnt want to mention this infront of the guard but I believe that while cramped for space, this is the best place to stay right now. The common houses are watched by cutpurses. Here, people leave you alone. More or less."

[OOC: Gosh darn it. Real life is making things hard for me, and I apologize for my poor posting. At least with posts tonite, Thurs, and Fri, we'll have four DM posts this week.]

Baird wisely picks no fights with a cleric who has been a friend to the group, despite theological differences.

Dilantar asks for a workspace. "I suppose you could use the dining table after dinner is over," Brother Engev suggests hesitantly.

Karas works to put the brother at ease. He suggests that the party would be glad to help out.

Yel'kno agrees wholeheartedly.

Spire on the other hand, is less whole of heart. He still would prefer the comforts of a lodging house, and is not sure that helping the cleric is the best move. On the other hand, maybe something will come of this.

Rogar reveals what he knows about Brother Engev's assistant. "Well, yes, of course," says the missionary. "I was going to talk with you all about it in the morning, but maybe this direct approach" -- he glances at Rogar -- "will save time." Then he hesitates.

Koz'Um Dawl seeks to encourage Brother Engev, and speaks of kindness. Baird too is happy to help.

Engev shrugs and nods. "Let me shed some more light."

The young priest tells you that finding a missing librarian. The missing man, Lansel, disappeared two days previously, and Engev is eager to find him. Engev gives you some background on Lansel and his strange behavior.

"I have known Lansel for most of my life. We were both brought up in the temple of Pantheon in Farungia. He became a librarian and I, a priest. But six years ago, something strange happened. He seemed to change overnight. One day he was my friend of many years, and the next he was a complete stranger. He asked bizarre questions, seemed to remember nothing of our friendship, and treated the temple as his own personal library. Some months later he was caught violating the sanctum and was expelled from the temple. Shortly thereafter, he left Farungia entirely and was gone.I have known Lansel for most of my life. "When Lansel reappeared, he was like his old self. He came to the temple and begged to be readmitted, saying that he had no memory of the previous five years. Threston, the high priest, seemed adamant about refusing Lansel's petition but changed his mind after a private meeting with him."

"Lansel returned to the temple, and it was just like old times for eight or nine months. We journeyed here to set up a new mission in Bonetown. Then he started to look haggard, and he told me he wasn't sleeping well. Something was disturbing him, but he wouldn't say what. He started asking a lot of questions about what he had been like right before his expulsion. I talked to him about it, but Lansel wouldn't let it go."

"I grew increasingly worried for my friend. He seemed on the brink of insanity, as if one small thing could push him over the edge. Two days ago, he failed to come to the chapel. I went to his home and found it empty. I searched all over but could not find him. I know that something has happened to Lansel. I want you to find out what."

Feel free to ask Brother Engev any questions you might have.

"Do you recall what books he might have been reading? Anything in his readings he might have mentioned when he was treating the library as his own study?"

Karas decides to take a load off of his feet and sits himself on one of the benches in the chapel area of this house. He pulls back his hood and listens to what the priest has to say about his missing friend. It's a strange tale, and Karas is extremely perturbed to hear that someone could lose so many years of their life. Koz'Um raises a good question. It could easily have been something that the man came across in his studies that triggered his change.

"What did he do in the sanctum? This...violation."

Spire wasn't paying much attention to the Brother as he prattled on, but perked up about halfway through the story. His ears twitched, and his right hand lifted to his chin, slowly stroking it. He stayed silent as the first few questions flew, mulling things over in his mind, and attempting to think of any times this has happened in the past, or perhaps a phenomenon among the clergy. "You said you friend... Lansel, was it? He looked haggard. Explain this. Sleep deprived? Or..." He searched for the right words, attempting to be clear, but diplomatic. Oh, to hell with diplomacy. he thought angrily. "Did he looked possessed? Or do you even know what that looks like?"

As nothing comes to mind that hasn't been asked already, Dilantar sits quietly and awaits answers to the others' questions.

Koz'Um Dawl asks about the books that Lansel had been reading most lately.

Brother Engev says that Lansel did bring some books with him to Bonetown, and the best way to get an answer may be to visit his flat and take a look, if his books are still there.

Karas asks about the offense that caused Lansel to be exiled. Engev shrugs. "I do not know what his offense was. Equally mysterious is the fact that the high priest allowed him to return. Something that Lansel said or did during his meeting with the man swayed the high priest."

Spire asks if Lansel seemed possessed. The monk replies, calmly, "Like I said, he seemed crazed. Plagued by nightmares? Ridden by demons, figurative or literal? Something was wrong, that's for sure."

He pauses, and says quietly, "Back home, you understand, in Farungia, it is thought that a person's only true treasure is his privacy. We no more question how a person asks than we would ask how ... how ... how his digestion is moving!" Engev blushes, revealing the taboos of his upbringing.

Dilantar and Baird hang back, not sure what to ask. Yel'kno is very quiet.

Rogar thinks the root of the issue is in Lansel's secret past. "We may have to find out where he went when he vanished and retrace his steps," he suggests. Engev looks abashed at that. "Such an intrusion into his privacy would be considered quite rude back home. Here, though ... " He shrugs.

You discuss the issues, and the day passes. Engev offers you bread and stale beer. Feel free to ask more questions, if you like.

By the time you are done, you are exhausted. The sea journey, the fight, and this long talk have taken a toll. Engev makes up beds on the floor with blankets that are just a step up from rags. He apologizes for the rough accommodations.

"I think you should get some rest and start your investigation in the morning." He offers his good nights.

(After all of the talking is done)

Karas sets his own bedroll out on one of the chapel benches with his backpack placed underneath. He starts to pull off his equipment as he thinks over everything that had been brought up. Demonic possession didn't strike him as the kind of thing you experience when reading the books of a temple. Something had caused the man to retreat inside himself, more than was usual for their upbringing it would seem. Had he discovered something?

Karas rubbed his eyes as he kicked his boots off and stored them under the bench as well. Speculating wouldn't do any good. This would have to wait until they found some answers Lansel's home.

"Well, I intend to help this man. I'm sure you each have your own reasons to stay or go. Whatever your decision, go with the gods."

He lays back on the bench and covers his eyes with an arm.

Yel'kno accepts one of the ragged blankets with an appreciative smile to the priest before making himself a place to lay. The day had been long and his performance in the fight on the docks was less than confidence inspiring to his current companions. Tomorrow he would endeavor to prove his worth to the group, somehow.

"I intend to help as well, though from all the tales I've heard of Bonetown I'm afraid we may not find the missing man alive."

to Koz'Um Dawl it seems to know what the man was reading seems the first step in finding the man--Lansel's flat could be close and who knows what could be discovered there. But the weariness the dwarf had thought he left behind when he slept upon the ship had returned; his body hurt from the blows he had taken in the brawl. The scene came back to him--his first fight, the first time he inflicted physical pain upon another being with an intelligence similar to his own. He saw the red of the mans blood as he had cut the mans arm with his small knife.
'stop it,' he though. 'There was nothing else to be done, they would have enslaved you, how much good will you now do since you are not in chains.'
Koz'Um Dawl, muttering to himself found the softest bench he could and stripping off his things and laying down his bedroll laid down and quickly fell into an uneasy sleep.
In his dream he saw the pain that he had inflicted upon his enemy, the knife slashing down to pierce the mans skin, blood poured forth and became a river that swept him away. The god Alemi watched from the shore as the small Dwarf was carried down the river of blood. His god cried to see what his cleric had done but Koz'Um Dawl also felt a forgiveness upon him.
He work suddenly, the feeling of guilt passed. 'self defense,' he thought, 'is not such a sin.'
And he was right.

Karas declares his intent to help the missionary who seeks, maybe naively, to bring safety and order to this lawless place. Visiting Lansel's home may reveal more tomorrow, he says as he beds down in the tight quarters. Basically, there is the chapel, the largest room at 10 by 10. A small living and eating room with a stove and a table is where you have been talking. Brother Engev has a closet, with barely room for a chest and a bed, for himself. Rogar has been sleeping in the eaves above.

Yel'kno says he will help too -- he seems eager to prove himself and his merits.

Koz'Um Dawl is on board too, but the effects of the day are taking a toll, both physically and spiritually. The cleric of Alemi finds some measure of peace in his dreams.

Tomorrow the investigation will lead the group to Lansel's flat ... and beyond?

Spire stays until the end of the discussion before leaving for their room without a word. As he entered the tiny room, seeing some of his companions already setting up their things, he sighed deeply, pressing his thumb between his eyebrow. This is going to be a great test of my patience, he thought, longing for the common houses. He silently set up his bedroll, throwing his things down next to it, but gently placing his longbown down on the ground. Pulling his immense spellbook from his bag, he began to pour over it, making small notes in the margins and mentally recovering from the day. He felt rather drained, his bruises from the battle still purple on his skin. It had been a long time since he had expended that much energy, arcane or otherwise, and it showed. The elf looked haggard, more so than usual, and his eyes began to flutter shut as he tried to read his spellbook. When it became too difficult, Spire replaced his spellbook in his backpack, crawling into his bedroll and falling asleep almost immediately. His things are between him and the wall - clearly he is erring on the side of caution.

Baird had silently listened to the story and the following questions then politely excused himself and prepared as best as he could for sleep, as he was far too used to staying common houses. After some time Baird was finally able to sleep but his dreams were strange and leaned more towards nightmares. In one dream Baird saw himself playing dice with a group of people shrouded in darkness who kept changing every winning roll into a losing one. One of the shrouded people became clear for only a second yet Baird recognized him as Ffloy and suddenly became wide awake. In the morning Baird was sitting by the door rolling dice onto his backpack trying not to make too much noise and wake the others. "I believe after today I am willing to stay at the common house and test my luck with the cutpurses."

Yel'kno slept uneasily in a series of short naps rather than a long, restful sleep despite his exhaustion. The hard floor of the priest's house was not the swaying canvas of a sailor's hammock that he was used to and the house did not rock a man to sleep like being cradled in his mother's arms like a ship on the open sea would. Since being chosen for a life at sea he'd never spent more than one night at a time on shore and the prospect of a second night after this made him anxious.

Just the same, he rose with the sun and set about inspecting his equipment in belongings with the practiced movement of habit before looking for something to eat.

After hearing the discussion and watching everyone head towards the sleeping area, Dilantar follows. He sits down and removes his alchemy kit from his pack, setting it aside for the moment. Placing his pack to use it as a pillow, Dilantar then looks through his alchemical supplies, cursing at his lack of specific ingredients. Had he more thoroughly prepared before the journey, he could have had his race's signature poison ready to use on the thugs who attacked them earlier. Dilantar made a mental note to keep an eye out for herbal or alchemical shops, that might have the ingredients he would need. Stowing his kit, he then pulled out his traveling formula book to leaf through and keep his alchemical formulae fresh in his mind. Going through them a couple of times, Dilantar then put his book under his pack and went to sleep. Upon waking, Dilantar heard Baird's comment about chancing the cutpurses at the common house and added his agreement to the conversation. Dilantar made a note to himself to apologize to Spirysn'rar after the elf awoke about going to the commonhouses.
