The Safe Road

DM Kathy
Tuesday November 8th, 2011 10:43:29 PM

Wilma goes to the temple and persuades William to come with the rest of the group. It seems the kids have been asking for him. Not--precisely--by name, but William doesn't need to know that part.

Nymirin and Vaniime are eager to get outside the school, even if it is for a boring amble down safe roads with a bunch of kids.

Emrys takes a moment to speak with Lord Bydrian. "You're quite welcome, I assure you--Emrys, is it? Experience tells me I'll have a few of these youngsters in my classes in a few years, and I hope they'll have a fine tale to tell." He smiles at you. "Come to mention it, I'm a little surprised not to have seen you in one of my classes yet. Aren't you one of Professor Silver's future bards?"

After numerous false starts, the group is underway. The shadows are stretching long, and it will be nearing dark by the time you arrive, but, as Lord Bydrian explains to the group, the roads of the Second Plateau are safe. No harm can come to any who travel them.

Biede, the young human boy helped by William, seems to like having the big cleric around. "That monster hit me and I fell down but I feel better now because you helped me," he explains eagerly.

Other kids seem to prefer the company of Grell and Vaniime, whose blows had done most of the work dispatching the creatures. "Can I see your sword?" is an oft-heard refrain as the jouney begins.

Wilma, walking with her own quarterstaff in hand, leaned over and said to her brother in a stage whisper:

"Better be careful, Hetthi Brotlir...you're developing a mini-fan club..." She grinned and winked at him.

OOC: For those who understand Orcish, Highlight to display spoiler: {Hetthi Brotlir means Little Brother...and Wilma is deliberately emphasizing the "little".}

Nymirin walks along the road in relative silence, occasionally whispering a magical phrase and conjuring a spray of water in his boredom.

This is surprisingly dull. It feels a lot like when I first started my training here. ...how odd to return to this.

He looks around at the younger children chattering on and smiles. Nostalgia was setting in. He turns his head to look at the path they've already walked and notices that he's left a trail of puddles in their wake.

I'm getting better at this.

William Willsden

Although he tries to ensure that he can't be heard, William talks more lucidly and with more enthusiasm with Biede than he ever does with youths his own age. Young children were less judgemental, or perhaps it had more to with William's own lack of maturity. Finally, someone at his level!

If anyone within earshot was listening carefully, they might have heard the cleric whispering comments such as; "Ah, yes Biede, but I think you were very brave to stand so close to the elemental!" Or, "You only fell down because you are young. When you are old I'm sure you will be storng and brave and stand up to bullies like those elementals."

William enjoys the journey, and the lights that Nymirin keeps conjuring.

Uncomfortable with the young ones tagging around tuging on her cloak corners and asking to see her sword, after an hour or so, she finally has had enough and quite firmly and close to being snippy, snaps out a firm,

"Enough, you all are making enough noise to let everyone on the second plateau know where you are. I do not want to hear another sound louder than a whisper. I am going up front to scout a bit and I don't want to hear anything louder than a sniffle coming from this group."

Letting Grell and Wilma know what she is doing, Van quickly moves to the front of the group and then moves quickly into the lead moving out in front of the group to where she is no longer visible to them. OK, its time to put some of the learing I have been doing to use. Van then starts to relax and takes a moment to center herself and begins to listen to the sounds of nature. Once she is sure she has a baseline to work from she moves out at a steady pace keeping and ear out for changes from the baseline or anything that doesn't seem to belong.

Grell AC20; HP 12/12  d20+1=2 ;
Wednesday November 9th, 2011 9:49:34 PM

Grell frowns a bit when Wilma calls him little, but he lets the insult slide. It was pretty obvious after their performance with the elementals who had been strong and who had been weak.

When the children begin to pester him, Grell just grins and kindly turns down the children. "A sword is a tool, not a toy. When you are ready, you will have one of your own." The warrior flexes his massive arms and preens a bit as he pats one of the youngsters on the head. "Work hard, NEVER skip practice, and one day you will be strong like me." It is not the warrior's intention to brag. His tone is one of a teacher trying to instruct the children in what he believes is the only path to achievement.

He grins a bit at Van's reaction to the children, and simply nods when she indicates she's going to scout ahead. As he walks, Grell tries to keep an eye out for trouble, but his mind begins to wander (Perception=2). The pathway all but disappears as he is transported back to the good old days on the plains of Izen where he spent his childhood summers.

Emrys
Wednesday November 9th, 2011 11:29:17 PM

"Why yes," Emyrs promptly answers the Baron's question. "Professor Silver has been my guide. He is so scholarly, cultivated and quite gifted. It's been an honor to be his student. However, I've often wondered why he has neglected to suggest your class, not to mention others."

Emyrs pauses for a bit and then adds, "What is your impression of Professor Silver? I've grown to know him well, here within the walls of Maplehurst, but he is a very private person. I know very little of his life outside the campus."

The bard also tries his best to enjoy the stroll along the road. He is beginning to favor his walking stick. All those hours amongst dusty tomes and scrolls or in the studio playing his lute, has somewhat depleted what little stamina and strength he had. Time to step up his exercises.

Thursday November 10th, 2011 12:56:56 AM

Wilma takes the opportunity to tease her younger brother, who is busy instructing the next generation of adventurers.

William is able to have a quiet word with the boy he helped rescue.

Nymirin finds the walk rather dull, and Vaniime eventually gets bored enough that she volunteers to scout ahead.

Emrys chats with Lord Bydrian. "Professor Silver is a fine man and a talented artist," he says. "And many of his students are interested in learning about etiquette and diplomacy, which is very gratifying to me."

The kids are eager and excited for about the first 20 minutes of your walk, but they had a nasty shock earlier, and short legs tire quickly. They begin to grow fractious, and ask how much longer until they get to the estate. A few bicker with one another; some drag their feet and complain that they're tiiiiiired.

Lord Bydrian tries to talk to them, but he is clearly unaccustomed to dealing with children of this age, and he tends to miss pretty badly. Either he uses vocabulary that's way over their heads, or he talks to them as if they were still in the nursery. The kids grow more fractious, and the whining ratchets up a notch.

William Willsden
Thursday November 10th, 2011 8:59:35 AM

William continues on the walk, unsure how to deal with the children's behaviour. He tries to keep one or two of them busy by asking questions, but soon he runs out of things to ask. He starts to wonder when it would be a suitable time to eat.

Nymirin (AC 16, HP 8/8)
Thursday November 10th, 2011 12:17:40 PM

Nymirin tweaks a brow as the children continue to whine. The memory of his time with his younger classmates is still fresh in his mind, and he wonders if his old tricks might still work.

Nymirin puts a hand in the air. "Now, classmates, what have your teachers taught you of the drow?" He looks around at their small faces and continues. "Did you know that all drow are born with magic in their blood? We're like gnomes, able to cast spells even from your age."

As Nymirin speaks the silver-white tattoos on his skin slowly shift from abstract loops and swirls into wispy vines that curl around his arms and spider onto his hands. He keeps his hand in the air, showing it off to the children. "We have a special secret, though. Drow can get these enchanted tattoos that react with the magic in our blood. I can make them look like anything I want." As he says this an ornate flower blooms on his palm.

"And if you all promise to be very good, I'll even show you a few more tricks of my magic."

F'aast
Thursday November 10th, 2011 1:57:12 PM

Faast at the end of the line, maneuvers himself to be near Emrys and in a very low voice out of reach of the others says,

"bard. back at the school, when i was examining lord bydrain, you tried to give me advice as to how to be a shaman of the order of the viper. do not EVER do so again."

Then leaving him, he returns to corral some of the young ones falling behind. Picking one up who is out of breath, he places her on his shoulders for a time to give her a break.

He remains alert watching to the sides and rear in a repeating pattern.

Emrys  d20+5=25 ;
Thursday November 10th, 2011 8:07:11 PM

Emyrs is completely caught off guard by F'aast's off color remark, and worst of all ... his attempt at threatening him. Apparently a byproduct of corrupted breeding which is prevalent in the vast majority of those cursed with orc blood. A sad commentary indeed, especially since he has treated F'aast with all the kindness and warmth a friend can provide.

Emyrs decides not to let this issue go without a rebuttal, because there is clearly a misunderstanding. Of course, F'aast may interpret affection as a weakness on which to prey upon. Even in their language, there are no words for 'thank you' and other pleasantries. He walks back with F'aast and whispers to him in hushed tones as well. However, unlike F'aast, he maintains a level of decorum befitting a friend. :)

"By the way, the name is Emyrs. When did we start calling each other by our vocation? I gather you also misinterpreted my statement earlier, not just in the content of its message, but in the spirit in which it was given. I was in no way trying to advise you in the way of your Order. Nor would I imply to have any superior knowledge of it. That would be rude. What I do know, and to a great extent, is the lore of Nature. I was attempting to draw a comparison, between the masterful subtlety of a viper and the utter deficiency of such that you were exhibiting. That was all! Even a blind man would have known what you were thinking. Nevermind the disrespect you were giving a noble who is offering his own home as sanctuary to all these younglings."

Emyrs pauses to see if anyone was listening in before continuing. "Now understand, I don't blame you for suspecting ulterior motives from the Baron or anyone. The stress of the situation was more than severe. I suspected dark designs as well, but I now believe his motivations to be good."

Taking a breath, Emyrs concludes, "For the future, if you find taking kind-hearted suggestions so offensive, especially on common topics that are pertinent to anyone, not just initiate shaman, maybe then you would prefer to get your instruction on subtlety from your reptilian companion. I have abilities that would allow you to converse with him in a language you understand. That is all!"

Emyrs is clearly upset and feels betrayed inside, however he wont give the thuggish monk the satisfaction. He masks his grief behind a unshakable facade of nonchalance and confidence, the kind that only those of great power and influence possess. He gives a final nod to F'aast and walks on ahead.

(Actions: Bluff 25, natural 20. Need a Sense Motive of equal magnitude for the slightest hint of Emyrs' true demeanor.)

The children's bickering brings Grell's attention back to the matter at hand, and his smile fades. Striding over, he locates the loudest of the whiners and picks him up off his feet. "That is *ENOUGH*" he growls in a tone that is not overly loud but definitely indicates that the warrior is extremely displeased. "It is NOT a warrior's place to question his commander. Especially one that is not able to defend himself!" Grell holds the youngster up to eye level for several minutes, making sure that he understands that Grell is extremely serious and will not tolerate the behavior any longer. Putting the lad back down gently, the warrior turn his steely gaze toward the other whiners, pulling a small dagger from his boot. "If I hear another complaint, whimper, or even so much as a sob over a stubbed toe, I will *cut out* your tongues and feed them to the worgs!!" At the mention of worgs, the warrior shudders ever so slightly as if...could it be...a measure of fear.

"Don't worry, little ones," Wilma added after Grell and Vaniime team up for their brand of discipline, "William and I have enough cleric skills to heal you up after any such cutting." She paused before adding: "Of course, neither of us have enough magic to reattach any fingers, but at least you won't have to worry about bleeding too much."

William is not sure what to do with the fractious children, and withdraws a little.

F'aast attempts to remedy the situation by picking up one of the stragglers and carrying her. It doesn't work quite as well as he'd hoped. "Me! Carry me!" another kid demands. "Me, too!" cries another. "I'm tired!"

As if that weren't enough, Emrys has taken offense at F'aast's earlier remarks, and delivers a rebuke in his turn.

Nymirin attempts to distract the children, which works well for a time. Grell, however, decides that discipline is what's wanted here! Grell gets right in the face of the whiniest kid and shouts at her. She promptly bursts into tears. Grell brandishes a knife and threatens to cut out tongues, and more kids start crying.

"Master Grell," Lord Bydrian says. "The children have had quite a shock today. Perhaps a less....stringent approach is warranted. Er--children, let's all sing the school song!"

It's a rather spiritless version of the song that rings out along the road, but the crying does stop about halfway through.

After a few more minutes of travel, you reach a place where a mudslide has washed down from a nearby hill. The road is completely impassible. You can go around the mudslide easily enough--but that means leaving the safety of the road.

William watches Grell's idea of discipline, and decides that staying quiet is probably the best thing to be doing again. So he resumes his usual demeanour of silence.

Faast nods at Emyrs, "Good. I accept your apology. I will work on not hating all your words. Sorry, but they have been giving me a headache."

He then turns back to smile at Emyrs. He doesn't know how he is ever going to learn to call this bard comrade, but he will try.

Setting down the first child, he tries humor with the other children. "No, I'mmmm tired. Can you all carry me?" He falls to one knee and plays it to the max. Then grins at them.

He plays with this for a bit and then tries a second tactic.

"If I see you being a heroic adventurer, cause we are on an adventure, I'll try to give you a break and carry you a bit. But only those who are brave. If you beg, the answer is no."

Then, "You are all being very brave. I am proud of you."

Gods above it hurts to be this nice.

Wilma (who never possessed any sort of singing voice whatsoever) obligingly supported the rendition of the school song led by Lord Bydrian, mentally conceding that it would have benefited from her sister Gunda's talents rather than her own.

"A mudslide..?" the young cleric marveled when she saw what blocked their way. She tilted her head, her sapphire eyes narrowing as it occurred to her that it was oddly coincidental that the magicked road was blocked by a mudslide. Wilma moved to Vaniime's side and spoke Elven in a low voice:

Any who speak Elven Highlight to display spoiler: { "Mama taught me to be paranoid--this is setting off all kinds of alarms. First a thwarted attack on the highly-protected school...and now the safe road is mysteriously blocked so that we must leave its protection to go forward. I just do not like this at all."}

Wilma switched back to Common and spoke in a loud voice:

"Okay, show of hands: who thinks that Van and Grell should scout the way around this blockage before we leave the road...?"

Emyrs raises an eyebrow at F'aast's comment, and he is about to counter with his own play on words when he stops in his tracks at the mudslide up ahead.

"Oh sod!! I am really beginning to lose faith with the sediments today!"

He turns to the Baron and asks, "Excuse me, Lord Bydrian, but is it safe to assume this was not here earlier when you were on your way to Maplehurst?"

Emyrs steps over to Wilma with a smile and responds to her well-spoken elven. "I applaud your aptitude for discretion. In fact, I imagine a formal vocabulary would be enough to befuddle young ears, no matter how round or pointed." And with that being said he scans the crowd of younglings for any elves or half-breeds. (Perception 25)

He gives Wilma a wink, "I'd reason no harm with 'practicing' ones divinations while we travel. I'll practice over here."

Emyrs steps away and begins to hum an archaic tune and the direction of the mudslide.

F'aast's clowning makes a few of the children smile, and he soon finds that a small knot of them has gravitated toward him. And, as he notes, this is very trying.

Vaniime notes that this is a shade too conveneient, especially considering that you just fought a bunch of earth elementals. She casts her mind over the problem, and realizes that it hasn't rained for weeks. A mudslide just now is highly unlikely. She also sees that working their way around the slide is quite possible, although they'll need to be careful with the youngsters.

William waits to see what his companions will do.

Wilma, too, finds the circumstances highly suspicious, and nominates Grell and Vaniime for scouting duty.

Emrys does note several half-elves and a couple of elves among the youngesters. He casts a spell--just for practice, kids, no reason to be alarmed--and finds that Wilma is correct; the road itself has a powerful magical aura, but nothing else in the vicinity does.

"No," says Lord Bydrian, looking quite worried now. "This was not here this morning. And I don't see any alternative but to leave the road and go around it. Do some of you want to scout the way first? Or would you rather go as a group?"

"I have to agree with Van," Wilma said with a thoughtful sort of frown, "If we're going to go off-road, we'd best do it all together." She glanced over at William again. "William, would you be willing to give Biede a ride on your shoulders? I think everyone should hold hands...except Van and Grell--they'll be...scouting." She smiled sweetly at her brother and best friend, her own hand tightening on the quarterstaff gripped within it.

William nods, pleased that Wilma saw a use in him.

Without a further word, he hoists Biede onto his left shoulder as if the boy was no heavier than the air around him. With surprising strength, he then bends down and lifts one of the other children onto his right shoulder, where he holds both in place with his large hands.

"Ok, let's stay together."

He rubs his chin with confusion and adds, "I find it perplexing that the thoroughfare's remarkable 'qualities' does not dissuade natural hazards such as this! Does anyone possess a theory for consideration?"

Emyrs winces as he says this, knowing full well how strange it must sound with his choice of words. He simply doesn't want to alarm the younglings any more than necessary.

"Vaniime, I bow to your expertise for finding the ideal route. For I haven't a clue." (Survival check 7 to avoid natural hazards.) Emyrs then turns his back to the younglings and carefully loads a bolt and puts his crossbow back on its holster.

The others follow, William carrying young Biede and F'aast doing his best to keep the kids together. Lord Bydrian brings up the rear, making sure nobody falls behind or gets separated.

The terrain is (obviously) on a hill; the mudslide continues for several dozen feet after the road. The area is lightly forested, with a substantial amount of undergrowth. It is difficult to see very far.

You have taken what precautions you can, and are suspicious of the circumstances, so you are not precisely surprised when you come under attack. Four humans, clad in studded leather armor, carrying bows, step from their hiding places and attack!

William gasps in pain as the arrow digs deeply into his thigh. By Alemi, he had never felt such pain! His legs almost buckle at the sensation, but for the sake of Biede he keeps to his bloodied feet, not wishing to drop the boy. Tears well in his eyes, until Wilma comes to his side. He knows her prayer - had studied it in class - but never had he been so grateful for it.

He manages to mutter a quick thanks despite the pain, then he closes his eyes in his own prayer. With Biede still on his shoulder, he feels his own healing magic soothe the wound. He is satisfied that when he opens his eyes, Nymirin also seems healed.

Then, with a quick glance, he hurries around the tree to place Biede in cover.

OOC: Standard Action: Channel Energy for 1 HP; used hero point to reroll for 4 HP. Heals himself and Nym. Then move action to i4. Thanks for Sanctuary Donna!

Nymirin (AC 16, HP 6/8)
Tuesday November 15th, 2011 6:26:29 PM

Nymirin snaps his head back as the arrow punctures his thigh, yelping loudly. Pain shoots through his body and his vision falters for a brief moment. "Os eir si iaraelaer tandros-!" he spits angrily, and looks toward the bandits.

That was a lucky shot. You won't bypass my gifts again, coward.

The pain dulls as William's magic washes over him. He takes a quick look down at his leg to ensure that the bleeding has ebbed, nods, and steps off to the side, calling back to Grell. "Go for it!"

Nymirin yanks his sling from his belt and begins loading a bullet into the soft leather, eyeing his first target.

It is going to take days to get this blood out of my silk. That can't go unpunished.

Elven Translation Highlight to display spoiler: {"Of all the useless magic-!"}

Emrys fires a shot, but the bandits' armor is good and the bolt skips harmlessly off the studded leather. He grabs a youngster and hustles him behind a tree, calling for others to follow.

Grell calls for Nymirin to step back, then charges one of the bandits. One mighty blow, and the man falls. [Q-8 was closer than Q-9, so you need to charge there. But you can still smack him, which is the important thing.]

Wilma hurries to William's side and casts a spell to protect him.

Vaniime moves up and fires a shot, which lands with a satisfying thunk!--aurgh!

F'aast, hissing in anger, charges up to one of the bandits and fetches him a one-handed blow that sets his ears ringing.

William channels energy to heal himself and Nymirin, then retreats behind a tree.

Nymirin vows the bandits will pay for ruining his wardrobe! He pulls out his sling and loads it.

Some of the kids follow Emrys behind the tree; a few more go with William. Some, following either Emrys's shouted instructions or their own native good sense, duck or hide or run back to Lord Bydrian. Some, though, remain where they are, paralyzed with fear.

The first bandit draws a rapier and steps up to Grell. He makes some fancy passes with the rapier, but the blade doesn't come close to hitting his target.

F'aast's opponent likewise draws a rapier and attacks. He does little better than his fellow.

A shriek of fear draws your attention to the last bandit, who has stepped up and grabbed one of the kids, a half-elf girl with pale blonde hair. "I've got her!" he shouts. "Let's go!" He begins dragging his sobbing prey back toward the trees.

Here is your map.

Emyrs tries to take stock of each of the younglings around him. Out of the corner of his eye, he catches a glimpse of Grell mutilating a bandit with a hazy red spray of blood. The macabre display almost liberates his lunch. However it's nothing like the horror of seeing a youngling being abducted by the bandit he had just shot at!

A fury within wells up from inside and he roars at the kidnapper, "NOOO!! YOU UNHAND HER!!!" The bard charges forward and attempts to grab on to the half-elven girl and rip her free or at least become an extra 140 pounds of deadweight for the bandit.

(Actions: Charge +2hit,-2ac. Hit CMB 17 to join the grapple and hang on to the girl and/or the bandit. They both have the 'grappled' condition so Emyrs might have a chance!! :)

Whipping his head around towards #4, Faast sees that Emyrs and Vaniime are taking good care of the kidnapping situation, but realizes that we still don't know anything.

"We need one to question!"

He spins back and attacks #3 once again, this time aiming to do subdual damage, but totally strikes out.

William hears the girl's scream and he feels that strange sensation that ebbed through his body in the last encounter. He turns to the children near him. "Stay here!" His voice is firmer than before. He then runs out of cover, clutching his white robes so they don't trail in the dirt, towards the shriek. If he can, he closes in on the fourth bandit and makes to join the grapple. Unfortunately, his spectacles have steamed up in the brief run and he can't quite see where he is going.

OOC: Move action to #4 (if there is room!) and then a standard action hitting CMB 7 (Doh!) to join the grapple by grabbing the bandit. I don't think William is cut out for wrestling!

Fresh blood spatter on his face, the warrior spins to face his new opponent. He grins as he brings his bloodied sword around to in another large arc to slam down on his soon to become second victim of the day. As the broadsword cuts into the mans chest, Grell chuckles wickedly. "Hmmm...I guess what they say is true...size *DOES* matter!"

The orc raised warrior takes in a deep breath, catching the scents of freshly spilled blood, and sweat...the hallmarks of battle. Smiling, he feels the surge of adrenaline that pumps through his veins, making him feel as though he could cut through a million men with almost no effort at all. He listens to the slow steady *thud, thud, thud* of the blood pounding in his ears. The slight burning in his arms contrasts nicely with the reassuring coolness of massive weapon in his hands. The sticky blood of his enemy, still warm on his face gives him a slight giddy feeling. For just the briefest of moments, Grell stands revealing in the shear joy that is combat.

Hit bandit #1 AC24 for 9.

Before Wilma could do more than blink, the bandit and his hostage--originally barely five feet away from her--were suddenly surrounded by three of her charging classmates! She made a mental note to initiate a discussion about just how expert Gargul terrain-travelers actually were in combat with her faculty advisor, Brother Vessix.

For now, however, she skirted around the tangle of combatants to an open spot just behind the would-be kidnapper and swung her her quarterstaff at him in haste.

OOC: Wilma moves to K10 on the map; her quarterstaff hits AC12 for 10hp damage.

Emrys rushes around the tree and grabs frantically at the girl. Or the bandit. Or possibly both. The three are a confusing tangle of thrashing limbs.

William, too, tries to fling himself into the grapple, but stumbles just as he gets there. He plows into Emrys, the bandit, and the girl, without any visible effect.

Vaniime does not attempt to join the grapple, she steps up and drops the bandit with a single efficient slice from her blade.

F'aast shouts that you'll want at least one for questioning, but misses his blow.

Grell turns his attention to the other bandit facing him, and drops that one, too.

Wilma works her way past her companions to the would-be kidnapper, but he is already down.

The children are shouting and crying by now; the blonde half-elf girl is all but hysterical. Dimly, you hear Lord Bydrian trying to calm them down. They don't seem to mind being spoken to like nursery-school kids now.

The lone remaining bandit, seeing his companions fall and their plan (apparently) falling with them, withdraws.

[I'm not going to update the map because Bandit #3 has moved off it. If you want to go after him, or make ranged attacks, you still can.]

Emyrs holds on to the hysterical girl and he tries his best to remember her name so he can calm her down (Knowledge Local: 16).

In a calm, soothing, compassionate voice he tries his best console her, "<enter girl's name>, it's all over. You're safe now. All is well, the bad men are gone."

He repeats this in the elven language, the tones are so much softer. "<ilis kos'm basti>, air'm eir olaes. O'vi mari byrn. Eir air shaer, si shar tael eisi kyli." (Diplomacy 11)

"Come now, lets return to the road. Come on now, child, lets go." He then turns to the other younglings. "Lets all return to the road." Then he remembers his unloaded weapon was left behind at the tree. "Does someone want to carry my crossbow?" He says this hoping that giving one of the a job will help take their minds off what just happened. "Here, do you want to carry my walking stick?"

Grell AC19; HP 12/12
Thursday November 17th, 2011 11:06:44 PM

Having downed his second bandit, Grell turns, looking for more victims. But they're gone...all of them dispatched...or run away like cowards. The massive bastard sword dips down to the ground and Grell's muscular shoulders droop in what looks like disappointment. He casts his glance around and sees that everyone seems to be attended to.

When Emrys suggests that it's time to get back on the road, he audibly sighs as he cleans the blood from his blade. The thrill of battle had been glorious, but honestly, he was a little disappointed. The way his father and mother had describe combat, he had expected more of a challenge. After a thorough examination of his gear and weaponry, and several more loud sighs, Grell readies himself to head back to the road...and more babysitting.

OOC: GREAT combat Kathy!! That was fun, no matter what Grell says. ;)

"There's still one left!" Wilma reminded her brother. "Van and Faast are going after him...we need to find out who these guys are and why they tried to snatch that girl!" Not waiting to see whether her brother would choose to pursue the bandit or not, the redheaded acolyte turned towards the huddled group of students and murmured an invocation of Gargul's positive energy. The immediate area was suddenly flooded with healing energy. (OOC: everyone in a thirty-foot-radius of Wilma is healed for 5hp damage.)

As soon as that was done, Wilma knelt and began the grim but necessary task of searching the ex-kidnapper's body even as she softly recited the Litany of Dispatch that exhorted the departed soul to speed on its way to the realm of Gargul and to receive its just judgment from the god of Life and Death.

"Don't forget to do a head count, William," she reminded her fellow cleric, "Just to be extra sure nobody is missing."

Vaniime takes off after the remaining bandit, but cannot catch him. (The bandit moved twice his speed as a withdrawal, so even if you double move, you're as far behind him as you started.)

Emrys thinks, but can't remember the girl's name. The littler kids are all kind of a vague mass for you now. But, between you, you and William manage to get her calmer. In a garbled mixture of Elven and Common, she says she wants her mommy.

Grell, disappointed that the combat ended so quickly, cleans his blade and returns his attention to the youngsters.

Wilma sends out a burst of healing energy. Two of the downed bandits begin to stir and mumble.

Lord Bydrian helps the children continue around the mudslide and back up toward the road. Several are crying. A few are exclaiming over how cool the fight was.

The fleeing bandit continues to flee. Vaniime can still see him, but she's going to need more speed or a ranged weapon if she's going to stop him.

I'm also assuming that the roll Wilma made in the last post will be applied to her Search skill.

"I should hope you have your sword out, Grell," Wilma said without sparing a look over her shoulder, "So that William can tie up the prisoners..." She grimaced down upon the departed bandit at her feet and finished up searching the body.

(diplomacy 22) He looks around to all the children and ushers them to sit and listen as well. "Come all, sit around and listen to a wondrous tale ... maybe a song or two."

Although the fight may well be over, his own nerves, like that of the children's, are still a bit frazzled. His performance is like that of a common street performer and his frustration of this fact distracts him from remembering anything about the girl's family name.

Wilma searches the fallen bandits, and finds that each of the three had a pouch containing 50 gold pieces. [Actually, it's #1 and #4 who are stirring. #3 is the one fleeing. #2 was critted by Grell, and is pretty much split in half.]

F'aast chases the remaining bandit at an all-out run, passing Vaniime, who is also on the bandit's tail. The bandit changes direction and withdraws again.

Emyrs tries his best not to sigh. He wonders how he doesn't know someone that lives on the same small campus as he. Especially being one of the few half-elves, like himself. He thinks he would have taken special notice of other half elves, even a youngling. He prides himself on knowing things, and here all his knowledge and powers of perception and scrutiny; not to mention having exquisite elven ears that can hear the softest most hushed tones, have failed him. 'How daft must I be to not know this girl,' he thinks. (Perception 14, to hear any chatter among the other younglings for info about Dawn.)

Emyrs also wonders how four common men could cause such a massive mudslide in such a short time. It also befuddles him if there have been any other known occurrences of this happening on this road. (Knowledge (geography) 9, natural 1)

"Dawn is such a pretty name ... like the Dawn of a new day. Is your family's name just as delightful? My name is Emyrs Myrridanmyl, my father is the archdruid, Myrridan the Wild. If she is important enough to summon elementals and then to sacrifice some of their men, then they will try again. I would like to be at the house when they do that. I'd also like to be there before sundown. What do you think?"

As soon as the students are grouped up again, he nods to those up front to head out and he takes up the rear again making sure that no students are behind him.

He thinks about singing 'A hundred bottles of beer....maybe milk....' but wants to keep the group quiet. It has been an interesting day. He is satisfied...so far.

Seeing Emrys take control of speaking with the girl to try and glean some more information, and seeing F'aast take control of their next actions, and seeing Wilma take control of the prisoner, William decides thathis role will be to walk quietly and not draw attention to himself. He walks behind the prisoner, lifting Biede again onto his shoulder.

He agrees with F'aast that they need to get to the house as soon as they can; a night in the dark does not appeal, no matter how safe the road might be.

Of course, he doesn't voice such opinions. Instead, he cleans his spectacles on the hem of his white robe, which seems to have miraculously avoided collecting any stains yet.

"We're closer to our original destination than to the school," Wilma reasoned out loud, shrugging off her backpack and rummaging through it for her other gown, pulling off its sash and going to the only other live bandit still left to the group, "So, yes, we all ought to hustle ourselves over there as soon as we can." The young cleric pulled the bandit's wrists together and wound her linen sash around them.

"My Mama taught me never to assume, Faast," the redhead told the monk with a slight grimace as she tied the bandits hands together, "After all...the masters back at the school assumed that the target of the first attack was supposed to be some artifacts in Maplehurst's care...now, it seems, that our original suspicion that the children were the true target just might be correct after all. But we need to drag these jerks along with us so we can try to make sure that we're right this time around." Wilma finished her task at hand and then poked the bandit in his doubtless-achy-ribs.

"Get up and walk with us," she told him coldly, "And don't even think about trying to escape, or you'll end up like your friend..." So saying, Wilma's sapphire gaze slid pointedly over to where the body of the ex-bandit lay. "Now...let's go."

They're adventurers." You're pretty sure you've heard those names before, but you cannot recall the context.

F'aast and William help Lord Bydrian get the children moving. "It's not much further," he says.

You certainly hope so; it is purpling twilight by now.

Wilma finishes tying up the two prisoners. Both are male, human, and have average-quality gear. Vaniime takes the opportunity to menace them.

He scratches his chin and his eyes light up as he recalls a few.

"There's so many. Did you know he was friends with Valdor of the Gold Dragons. Father says I look kind of like him, except he has a mustache." Emyrs takes a length of his copper-blond hair and drapes it across his upper lip. He puckers his lip up to help keep it in place. "Here ... do I look like him?" (disguise 10) A simple attempt at humor in order to make her comfortable and open up.

Wilma got to her feet using her quarterstaff, remaining silent as Van and Faast intimidated the prisoners. She couldn't help thinking what would her parents have done in this situation? The answer to that question no doubt involved sharp edges and equally sharp questions, but there was no time for that at the moment, because it was crucial to get the children to safety.

Hopefully there would be more information to be unearthed once the group were inside Lord Bydrian's estate.

Then Wilma had to smile at herself as the thought struck her once more:

Turning back to the speaker so she knows which it is, Van glares at him and then simply says. "the fact that you weren't going to hurt you may be the only thing that saves your life. You had better hope I find that taht is a true statement. Now, No more talking."

Turning to her best friend she continues.

"Hey Wilma, do you have anything that can be used to keep these guys quiet until we get to our destination? I would hate to have to cut out their tongues before we get the info we need."

Leaving the gagging to Wilma, Van moves back to the front of the pack joining grell as they start to get going once again.

Everybody take 400 XP for this scene. Well done.

I'm awarding hero points to Emrys and William, for (literally) flinging themselves after the girl as she was being kidnapped. Hero points at this level come with 30 bonus XP.

If someone else has hero point nominations, let me know. In the meantime, on to the next scene!
