Sam smirks as the scout hits the ground from the barrage of spells. His attention shifts back to the cleric. He hears the cleric's shout, but can't make out the words. The action from the cleric after the shout is well known to the him though. He braces himself as the negative energy rips against his soul. Sweat pours from his brow as he regains his composure. Sam realizes that the blast hit the children and screams Nooooo! You monster! Get the children away from here! The sight of the children falling shakes Tahni's usually strong will as she feels the dark power of the cleric wash over her (Will Save vs DC 16: 13 = Fail.)

A lump gathers in her throat, and she knows that Gargul is coming to take the children to the place of eternal rest (Spellcraft check vs DC14: 16 = Pass).

"Not today though" she affirms to herself. Moving in between Bashful & Dopey, Tahni kneels and places a hand on each child, stabilizing them and keeping them in this realm.

"For the glory of Firebeard!" The cry rings out above the din of battle as a great, flightless bird breaks from the darkness and emerges into the light of the camp. Standing some seven feet in height, it resembles a cross between an ostrich and a game hen. Its tawny feathers are covered in chain barding. It covers ground quickly, moving gracefully on tall, fluid legs. Seated atop this bird in an ornate saddle is a female dwarf; blue-eyed and blonde-haired. She is clad in thick fullplate, confidently holding a shield and lance before her as they speed toward one of the troglodyte scouts.

Jarga weathers the cleric's storm of red energy like a grim-faced stone. He thought his heart could not break further but the pained whimpers and gasping breath of the stricken children is another lash over its many hurts.

His wearying hand rises to send forth his flame-wrought justice once more but he pauses; his friends have circled the cleric and he cannot risk scorching them. He notices Tahni, who, despite being battle-weary and unrested, has not yet not lost hope and looks to be wrestling the children back from the brink.

He hears Sam's words, a triumphant ode to the groups persistance and valour. Hewatches the others rage against an evil wretch and admires them; for though the tide was now turning they would have drowned to save these refugees.

He smiles and whispers to himself "Aye, they'll do."

He moves through the centre of the camp, looking for trouble to the East.

He is startled by what appears to be a giant chicken being ridden by a dwarfess. He squints and tries to figure out what it is.

Nope. Still a giant chicken.

"When we arrived the first words from RedForge incited the grace of Alemi. Now could we turn our backs on a dedicated Shepherd of Alemi? Is it not said 'In health there is freedom. Health is the first of all liberties.'? It seems as though regaining health, traveling with a healthy priestess, would promote the future health of these people."

Devlin doesn't move one inch even when there is a commotion behind him. Whatever that be the others can handle it. I am not going to let this undergrown bear try to shove us around and threaten us, if we don't make a stand now he and his kin will feel they can do it whenever they like.

Jarga slides his trusty Donk between his back and his backpack and whisks a blue, whist-frosted wand from his belt. He faces the gaping hole in the earth as Bruagh wrestles Tahni from the grasping claws.

He wonders what the limits are of the foul portal. It would make sense that, being of limited diameter, its creator would have a limited ability to affect those that moved beyond it's immediate range.

"Back away from the edge!" he yells, hoping his instincts are correct.

That voice though, rippling through his mind, made him unsure... and the children awakening... this was no trifling power.

Sam -- 20/15/16 -- CMD 13 -- HP 23/23

Sam feels a certain peace with his oath. I can't change what has happened. I will learn from my error. Tahni will find a way to save them...

Sam's thoughts are abruptly halted by the demonic voice from the pit followed by the commotion of Bruagh pulling Tahni away. Get Tahni and the children away from the portal!

Not having time to think or to find fear in his heart, Sam rushes over to within 10 feet of the pit and focuses the rest of his dwindling energy on the foul creature. In his most commanding voice, Sam utters loudly in Abyssal, "Your evil deeds here will cease immediately! We will not suffer another moment of your foul presence! Your kind may haunt my nightmares, but I have no fear of you here and now! Leave this place!"

action- With DM approval- Use 1 or 2 hero points as a special action to try to drive the demon back through the portal.

Braugh grabs b]Tahni around the waist as the pit of fire and terror threatens to pull her body in.

The wise Paladin knows this is indeed not Gargul's work, but must be some power or demon taking advantage of the desperation of the situation.

Though Braugh's strength may be great enough (Strength check DC 16 please )to pull her her body from the grasping claws, YET Tahni's soul begins to get vacuumed into the pit below. Yet she focuses and holds her spirit in place

Sam charges in and rebukes the demon, ((( Please succeed on a DC 16 perform roll to interrupt the demon's concentration like a countersong))))

Then a terrible voice, "I AM LORD BALDESAC, TERROR OF THE DENIZENS BENEATH"

As Devlin continues to challenge BlackAxe's authority, he opens his mouth-------

crack

Thunderous cacophony a lightning strikes from the portal, blue electricity sears through the dwarves, linking them all in a burst of energy Everyone Makea DC 14 Reflex save for half damage of 17, which is 8.

BlackAxe gets singed by the lighting and lifts his axe, "Bloody pit-wandering fiends!"

He charges dark-energy glowing axe first, and cleaves at a lizard-like hand reaching from the portal, severing it in one fluid motion. (Hit AC26 for 8 damage) Angry and pained howls emit from the portal.

A claw rips at BlackAxe, but he deflects it with his shieldarm, the dark bearded commander mumbles something like "Opportunist Demon scum"

But it still burns; his breathing rasps out in wheezes but he manages a few words.

" More like *cough* Lord *wheeze* Ball-sack! "

He sends fire from the tip of his fingers towards one of the grasping claws.

Jarga lobs a subtle insult and fires a ray of heat as Devlin plugs two bolts into the pit, all of which are to be swallowed in the swirl of flames and grasping claws.

Then, a large black-shadowy hand launches from the portal, gripping Tahni's face. Her skin turns ice cold where the creature's hand touches.
It pulls at her, but Braugh pulls harder.
Then, the hand pulls Tahni's soul out of her body, leaving the straining paladin holding a hollow shell...

Then Sam's voice trembles the very ground as he rebukes the demon,
The shadowy hand shakes violently and loses its grip on Tahni's soul, allowing it to spring quickly back to her body.
The young Gnome chastises Lord Baldesac to be gone from the mortal realm.
The Oratory breaks the demonic concentration.

Then, BlackAxe cleaves the shadow hand at the forearm with his glowing Dwarven Axe, dissipating the palm into thin air.

Deldrid shouts to get away from the portal, which BlackAxe does as soon as the sticky web explodes and stretches over the entire 15foot pit. The smaller clawing hands get tangled immediately, unable to break the webbing.

Electricity emanates from the edges and the pit shrinks,
A horrid wail is heard from the Pit, "Tease of flavor. Your soul shall become tastier with time. Patience."

Shrinks... shrinks. shrinks.

And flickers to a close.

Everyone gets 400 exp for Excising Lord Baldesac

Tahni remains on the ground, barely conscious, her soul shaken.

Those three lives, not souls, could lead to the ruin of unknown others. You serve as a guide for lives and souls on behalf of Alemi. As a vehicle for demonic powers, who knows the devastation you could bring. As a perceived vehicle for healing and hope, the weak and broken look to you. If your soul is corrupted, what does that mean for those weak and broken?

You need to find a way to break this curse, atone, and rectify your relationship. I will help you do these things, but you must commit!"

Could you do us one more favor there is a woman named Cloverdale that travels with us. She is afflicted by a disease most terrible perhaps a curse. Could you see if there is anything you can do.

Passing Blackaxe Devlin lets out a grunt. Thanks

As he takes his familar place at the head of the group his thoughts turn inward. Almost to saftey, than what? I suppose we find the dark bloods, see if they were the cause of the explosion. Can't let riddleport happen again. What about the demonic baby, and the deamons in general. Dark brotherhoods, vulture pirates and a land twisted by deamons.

Bruagh bares the burden of marching and carrying Tahni stoically. His relief is great indeed when Tahni comes to. "We have to quit meeting like this, one always regaining conscious with the other watching over them. The rumors will soon be flying" he jokes. "The children are with Baenor's wife, they are out for now, but they will live." Bruagh gives a slight smile to Tahni.

"Let me know when you feel strong enough to walk." he says as he continues to carry her.

"I'm sure I wouldn't wish to tarnish a paladin's honour" Tahni says with a smile and chuckle to Bruagh "You can put me down now. The weather is too hot for you to be burdened by me further"

The march is long, and Tahni feels the exhaustion of the day set in (Fort Save vs DC14: 10 = Fail).

She takes time to discuss the events of earlier with the party "I don't know what happened. I went to stabilise the children, an act I have performed on the dying many times in the past, but something was fighting against me this time. Fighting to take the souls of each of the children to a very dark place. No, fighting is not the right word. Whatever it was it was just toying with me. It had so much power. It came down to my life - or the lives of three children. I had no choice. And then... then ... I'm not sure what happened. Visions and ... a voice? A female voice in my head. I couldn't understand her words but she wanted me to focus, to concentrate, to listen." Tahni pauses to consider what has transpired. "She kept my soul from leaving" Looking about the group, she takes a cleansing breath and smiles "I'm sure I just need a good nights rest. We should try and keep our spirits high, for the sake of the refugees"

Still exhausted by the earlier events, Sam struggles to keep up (fort=10 fail). He feels as though his entire body is weighted down as he trudges along. Although his body feels broken, his spirits remain relatively high.

Tahni and the children are still with us. Their salvation has made up for my failure. How much of it was me? Did some god hear my plea and come to our aid? Either way, things are looking up. Hopefully they stay that way long enough to find the refugees safe haven.

Even in his weakened state, Sam manages to smile as he marches forward.

Delrid continues to march, while further examining the equipment. Trudging seems to be the theme, so trudge he will.

Delrid feels a little hurt by Jarga's incendiary comments. Perhaps he should give that one a wide berth.

Sam seems much more focused or even empowered from their last time together.

Devlin is apparently filling a leadership role while Tahni struggles with her faith.

Bruagh has shifted focus from battle to care for the cleric.

Siv seems a competent fighter, but quiet...

Delrid is also amazed Ms. Cloverdale has neither died nor improved. Misery hangs over the group, and shows no sign of relief.

Jarga thanks Dende and rips the blanket into strips as he walks. Once the blanket is fully torn in to strips he places them in a pile on the ground just slightly away from the others and pulls a wand from his belt.

"Shrinkayabitsa!" he announces, pointing the wand at the pile.

A sudden freezing cold downpour pops into existence over the strips and soaks them instantly.

He picks one up and ties it around his forehead. The cool cloth is a welcome relieve and excess water trickles down his spine, its cold making him shiver. He cackles with glee and hands them out to everyone.

Jarga uses Wand of Drench on the cloth.

Zach R: Not to be Debbie-Downer, but isn't that 3rd party and not Core or APG?

The heroes exchange kind words of gratitude and concern for one another, and some reflect inwardly on enemies and destinies... as the caravan marches through the hot day.

BlackAxe nods to Devlin and then motions for one of his soldiers to scout the back and flanks.

As asked, the Cleric goes to inspect Ms. Cloverdale.
He looks at her stomach, which now has blackened veins that seem to be spreading over her body.
By the plush petals of Flower! This woman is under a horrible curse of necromantic origin. When we stop I shall see if I can break the spell's bonds. (Heal = 27)
He then monitors her heart rate and temperature very closely, fanning her slightly.

Dende holds up a blanket to Jarga, with a curious look on his face.

-------------The Sun Sets slowly----------------

Finally, General Stern BlackAxe speaks with a commanding voice, "We make camp."
Immediately, RedForge, and the two soldiers begin rolling out a tent and setting a fire.

As Baenor pours water into a cauldron, RedForge walks over to a patch of ground and shoves his hand into the dirt, pulling out a large Turnip root for soup. He smiles, "Always know where to find tubors." (Survival = 26)

Deldrid fiddles with all the equipment, finding the skull-rattle the Trog Shaman used to spread terror throughout the group still sends a chilll down his spine when he shakes it. (DC 14 Fear in a 50foot radius, usable 3/day)
Also the shaman wears a ferocious bear-hat (casts Bear's Endurance CL3 1/day)
The clerics massive maul is weighted funnily and has purple glowing arcane runes (Greatmaul of Spell Storing +1)
The plate mail is well-made for the lizardfolk, masterwork crafted out of black metal and sharp-edged, spiked. The gauntlets act as 1d4 piercing fisticuff armed attack and you can still manipulate all your digits. Good back-up weaponry.
There are also 5 cure light wounds potions and two potions of Enlarge Person.

A watch is set and everyone settles in for the night.

The Cleric lights several candles around Ms. Cloverdale.
He holds a blue crystal in his hand as he begins to meditate and pray.
After a minute, his hands begin to move quickly as he casts a spell Dispel Magic
Sweat beads on his forehead as he concentrates (19)...

SHATTER
The blue crystal bursts in his hands and he flies backwards.

Ms Cloverdale is still unconscious... nothing has changed.
He looks down in defeat, "What kind of madness is this?"

To Delrid: "How on earth did you find Redforge and catch back up with us? I'm not complaining mind you."

To Siv: "Well met friend, I'm sorry we haven't had a chance to be introduced... uh, more formally. Glad to have you along. I'm Bruagh Stormbringer, humble servant of Domi. That's a mighty fine... chicken? you have there."

To Redforge: "Brother, it is good to see you outlasted those treacherous pirates. I mean to tell you before, that axe I tossed you came from your nephew in Riddleforge. Told us to meet up with you and find what we could about the Duergar who were making these weapons for orcs. Seems we have bigger problems now."

To Jarga: "Friend, please give Delrid a chance. He can be a bit gruff but he has a good heart and has saved this group more than once. Thank you for the work you did today."

To Blackaxe: "Thank you for what you have done here, and for not giving up on your Dwarven brethren. Every gnome and dwarf here owes you their life. Thank you."

Devlin is quiet most of the evening. He talks with thoes around the fire but most of his thoughts are inward. He takes the first watch to allow his mind to relax before getting some sleep.

Its time someone takes charge of the group. I'm not the most diplomatic in the group but I think I am the most unbiased. Problem is I leave too much to chance sometime, Wardd's grace has served me well so far. From here on out I will step up, if they keep listening than I will keep talkin.

His thoughts are interrupted by the breaking of the blue crystal. Devlin wanders over to see what happened. Upon seeing no change in Cloverdale's condition and the shocked look on the cleric's face the rogue shakes his head. We can try again tomorrow perhaps, Tani should be feeling better and maybe she can aid your efforts. This woman his been fighting this for a long time if its Wardd's will than she will live until the curse can be lifted.

Delrid returns the handshake, then embraces Jarga with a strong madculine hug.

"Devlin, since you often scout ahead, I think it would be wise for you to carry the Fear Rattle. You often have the distance to prevent impacting friends, and may need the escape."

"Bruagh, you have strength and divine calling, I think the spell-storing great maul serves you best."

"The bear helm would serve anyone well, so as the party decides..."

"I think the plate mail could easily be modified for anyone interested. I also think I could convert it to barfing for Siv's avian mount."

"I think everyone should get a potion, with Bruagh and Siv getting the enlarge persons, and Jarga getting the extra cure."

"Any disagreement? To answer your question, Bruagh, I was researching Woldsblood and bumped into the other party and told them of your struggles. RedForge had a debt to repay, so here we are!"

ooc : Hi all... I spent this evening working on a little (PC only sorry) application that takes some of the risk / fuss out of formatting posts for this site for those of us without magical Edit powers.

I wanted to see what you guys thought before sharing it with the wider Wold.

Basically you format your post in Rich Text and then generate the post with tags at the click of a button. Clicking the Generate button applies the tags and copies the result to the screen (and the clipboard for convenience).
Spell casters can also plug spells in to append at the end of a post.

Anyway if you want to give it a whirl here's a pictureand a direct file download from my website.

I'm pretty sure it's virus free and if anyway wants to see my code I'm happy to share.

Features yet to be implemented:
- Link tags
- Storing which spells are have ticks in the checkboxes (determines what is appended when you Add Spells)
- Keyboard shortcuts

The dwarf warrior is somewhat taken aback by the attention of her traveling companions. She composes herself after a moment and pats her chest with a mailed fist. "I am Siv Firebeard, sworn retainer and housecarl to Lord Raknir Firebeard." She drops her fist and furrows her eyebrows. "Or, at least I was. My lord and a detachment of hirdmen were in Riddleport investigating opportunities for our House to invest and expand. I was on errand when Riddleport was attacked. My liege died in the fighting, as well as most of my fellow housecarls and hirdmen. I am... I am alone."

Siv turns to pat her mount on its long neck. "This is my axebeak, Blue. He has been my trusted companion since I plucked him from his mother's nest the day after he was born. I drew the last lot of my company and had to make due with the sickly runt of the nest. He was near death for days and had bright blue skin. So, I named him Blue." She ruffles his feathers and coos at the large axebeak. "Isn't that right, Blue? Unfortunately, Blue and I no longer have anything to return to. My liege lies fallen, my hirdmen scattered, and all I have are my arms and armor. I was trying to make myself as useful as possible to the refugees. Do you think there is some good that a former housecarl could do with your company?"

The group travels well as old friends are reintroduced and everyone is reassured of good intentions o their brothers and sisters in arms.

When Braugh mentions to Roger RedForge about the adamantine axe, the older red-beard's eye widen and he looks at the adamantine axe, "Aye, I could tell by the craftmanship; Darkblood's work. But in the hands of Orcs! Menelaos must be up to something devious."

Then, BlackAxe says out loud, "We should have retaken Drakesmead when we had the chance."

Deldrid gets a wild hair and begins writing blueprints for a large mobile forge/alchemy lab.

Sam thinks about the power of his oratory skills, knowing magic flows through his vocal chords,

When Devlin asks about Menelaos and Drakesmead, RedForge rolls his eyes.

Then BlackAxe snorts gruffly, "Menelaos led the subterranean assault on our ancient smithery! Fortress Drakesmead fell nearly two decades ago to the darkbloods, kicking me from my rightful throne and sending my clansmen to MountainBurrow as refugees..."

Then BlackAxe looks to RedForge with a glare, "We should have retaken Drakesmead when the Duergar fortress was distracted by their assault on RiddlePort."

RedForge replies, equally gruffly, "There is no evidence to suggest the Duergar were behind RiddlePort's destruction. We would have been slaughtered by their defenses if they were present in full-force."

This seems to be a point of contention between the two dwarven clan leaders.

" Giant squishy blobs of boiling bloody lava they were! And no sooner than we bunked down for the night to recover the lizards came calling.. and they obviously weren't wanting to borrow a cup of sugar to bake welcoming cookies.

I came out here to learn about fire and flame... yet seems it can get a little too hot out here for a lone sorceror. I'm hoping to tag along for a while, Safety in numbers and all that! I got roughed up pretty badly yesterday... but I scorched up a few lizards as well. It's good to be useful! "

As he walks he keeps an eye out for anything interesting in the changing terrain but is largely distracted by the voices of his travelling companions.

Later, Tina seeks out Captain RedForge "It is good to see you well, Captain" she says with a smile, extending her hand in friendship "I'm sorry we haven't been able to speak earlier, however, I have been... uh... indisposed. May I ask, have you word from Guy Baltar? We last saw him on patrol on the Scab borders. Tina Cloverdale, the injured woman with us, is his beloved"

I agree that the refugees are our first priority, but we still have a day and a half before we reach the town. We can discuss much before we get there. Devlin looks around at those gathered before continuing.

While I agree that the Duergar have some sort of influence in the area, I'm not sure they acted alone against Riddleport. The explosion that leveled much of the city was likely due to the Darkbloods but I don't think they were the ones who animated the dead. The Dark Brotherhood or whatever they were had some plans during the chaos. I think the Brotherhood talked the Duergar into setting the bomb and used the deaths of the citizens to fuel some dark ritual that ended with the release of some devil or demon.

Devlin looks grimly at the group before continuing.

That demon is now running around The Scab but we have no way of finding it right now. Not one I am aware of anyway. I say we see what we can do about the Darkbloods at Drakesmead. Something dark is stirring in this area and the community is going to need a place of safety during any hard times.

It also will be good ta bring the darkbloods to justice.

The group concludes it is best to make securing the refugees priority, but discussing ideas of striking a blow to the Duergar FOrtress of DrakesMead.

Sam and Braugh have heard of a great forge that rests at the valley where two mountains meet.
In the Second Age, a large Fortress was build around this forge, both above and below ground.
Dwarves of old crafted great masterpieces here that have resulted in many legends in the Dwarven Pantheon.
Like the legend of Goraxe, barbarian prince in the time or reckoning wielded the greataxe by the same name, that eviscerated the Ancient Shadow Dragon, Shakoom-ra.

Devlin explains the events that transpired in RiddlePort's aftermath and Deldrid discusses future prospects.

BlackAxe responds, "Aye, retaking our home be on me mind as well."

Meanwhile, Tahni meet the tall human cleric. He smiles at you and says in a tizzy, "Oh my my manners! I've totally been caught up in the situation. Yes, my name is Tally Wyndborne, a beloved seedling of the mother Flower, goddess of all that is gorgeous in the world. I lived in RiddlePort, but was on a diplomatic and supply mission to MountainBurrow when the explosion happened. I've been dedicated to finding survivors since... Necromancer's curses can be difficult to break if they can infest necrotic tissue like this. Her recovery may be... difficult." He looks worried at the prospect.

THen the Oracle remembers that Tina Cloverdale was engaged to Guy Baltar, a soldier that was de-armed in the adamantine-powered Orcish assault at the Inn.
RedForge smiles, "Aye, Guy is on duty in MountainBurrow. He'll be glad to see Tina, only if we can help her recover... Demon's ye say eh?"

Then RedForge thinks for a moment and says slowly, "The Indigo Brotherhood are an organization of Drow assassins. I've not heard of any activities in 40 years; and my info was good in RiddlePort."

(OOC: Yeah, everyone should be at full health after 2 days of walking with clerics)

RedForge smiles at Tahni and the rest of the group as you study the rockface with curious looks on your faces, "Aye, the Gnome's be clever with their illusions." Deldrid's suspicions confirmed.

When the Dwarven soldier completes drawing a square on the boulder, you hear what sounds like powering-down? Vroooooooooooo

It seems only Braugh is surprised by the sudden appearance of the large stone archway over a large wooden door.

With a great deal of strain, BlackAxe and RedForge pull the door open. Dust and dirt fall from the wooden frame as it grinds across the sandy soil.

You look down to see a dark tunnel leading seemingly to nowhere.

BlackAxe says, "Stay close, must follow the correct path."

And then the refugees and heroes follow the soldiers down the tunnel.

A spiral staircase descends nearly 100feet straight down.
A sharp left turn to a tunnel that curves up and right.
You stop. BlackAxe punches a rock on the wall, sliding open a hidden door.
Another spiral staircase.
Halfway down, BlackAxe stops walking and grabs onto the stone on the wall.
He climbs up, up, up. click
A tiny door slides open around eye-level with Sam, Password?

RedForge says, "Hubbinscoop icecream"

click, clock, tick, tock.

A panel door slides open, three armed Gnomes stand there, eyes wide, taking in the refugees,
"Quick, quick, come in!"

You walk down a small corridor, and the Gnomish soldiers open a huge clockwork Archway door by inserting a jeweled key.

Light pours from the door as it is opened and you peer through

Your jaw drops as you see a bustling underground city around you.
Houses formed from stalagmites have smoke coming from chimneys and light from windows.
Mothers call to their children as they run amongst gardens, carrying large turnip-like roots home.
Gnomish merchants pull small carts filled with vials of liquids, stacks of hay, and one even has some strange pulsating fungus in his basket.

But all this slowly stops as the civilians halt to view the newcomers.

Your intrinsic sense motive skill tells you they are all concerned for your health.
Then you realize... you must look horrible.

Mr. GoodButtom suddenly lights up ecstatically, "My dear Mrs. GoodButtom!" he runs and embraces his gnomish wife, tears of joy fall down.

Tally says to Tahni, "Come, lets take Tina to the Temple."
You walk briskly as more civilians gather to view your refugees.

THen you hear a hurried shout, "Tina? Tina! Get out of my way!"

You look up to see Guy Baltar, one-arm and all, plowing through the crowd to reach his beloved.
He sees her and drops to his knees, placing his one hand on her, tears streaming from his face, "By the gods. I thought you had died... but what is this?"
He seems confused she is unconscious.

BlackAxe says to Braugh, "We have established a branch to the Catacombs here. I'll meet you in the DrunkButtom tavern tomorrow to discuss plans."
Then he walks off towards the Guard Citadel.

Several Gnomish civilians begin gathering your equipment and show you to the RiddleRest Inn, where you are given food and warm bath.

Welcome to MountainBurrow.

Looking at his shoulder he sees a few new scars where the trog beast clamped down on him. After a hot bath and getting his clothes cleaned he starts patching the numerous holes he finds in his shirt and pants. Going ta have to get some new clothes these are almost shot.

Party People, below is a quick itemized list for our party convoy. Looking at how much we struggled just walking for the last segment, I thought traveling in comfort might be a priority. I do admit getting carriages and livestock out of a hidden gnome lair might be unrealistic. Here's my conceptual breakdown for now:

Two carriages should run us around 200gp.
Heavy/Light Horses/Oxen tow team - 400/150/30 per carriage = 800/300/60 total
Equipping the mini-forge w/alchemy lab, forge, anvil - 205
Converting wheels to floating hubs - around 1100 each (got the numbers elsewhere)

It's probably worth considering for another time. I do think having multiple characters with multiple craft skills and multiple item creation feats make a traveling creation base very worthwhile. Creating mundane and magical equipment for coppers on the gold will give us a great advantage.

Also, having what we want when we want it, from a defensible mobile fortress would be a lot of fun for the entire party.

I'll look into creating something else on this stopover.

Stay Awesome!

I have one very important question. Will we have time to craft items before we set out again? I ask because I want to take the time to craft some armor. I can take 10 and make the DC for creating what I need. It will affect my decision in that it only costs 1/3 of what buying the item would.

Essentially will I have time to make just one armor, or do I need to buy a temp armor until I have time to craft my main armor.

Thanks.

The loot split roughly works out as follows:
Siv: 8,925gp (started play with 13k)
Jarga: 18,925gp (started play with 3k)
Everyone else: 21,925gp

That will put everyone equally on the same value of items.

Start planning your spending based on that

ok, here's a link to the loot list and I've given everyone update access to it:

Note that the catacombs take a non-negotiable 10% commission from all sales, hence the adjusted value of items in the spreadsheet.

If you want to keep something, please put your name next to it. Naturally, the person who acquired it gets first dibs if multiple people want the same item. I'll be selling everything else in the catacombs tomorrow evening. If there was something that you wanted to keep, no dramas, we'll just do some reversals. The ring of protection +1 was given to Tahni I believe.

From Addisons post about the diamonds.

Appraise or Profession Mining DC 16 These gems have to be worth at least 6000 gold, it will take about a day to extract them carefully though. I know a few of us made the required check.

Um, yeah, that ring of protection was given to Tahni and I do kinda need it :)

I've sent an email to the other 3 people who work the catacombs asking that they verify my math. The values in the google doc I provided may be slightly off. If so, then we're actually sitting at around 24k per person rather than 22k (hey, there's a +1 ring of protection right there!)

In terms of the magma diamonds, well, that's Addison's call. My thoughts are that one person could make a roll, and everyone else can try and "Aid Another". Who knows, it could yield us another 1k each...

In terms of reparing the broken magic sword, to fix it requires the Craft Magic Arms & Armor feat (which requires a char level of 5) and that prerequisite cannot be bypassed with a higher DC. In addition, the character's level needs to be at least 3 x the highest enhancement or special ability bonus of the weapon. In this case, it would take a character of level 6 (3 x level 2 - Wounding) to repair the sword.

Also on the repair: We invest 1/2 materials, then sell at 45%. Sounds like a net loss of 5% to me, so until we get to 6th level we have a cold iron paperweight.

Also, looks like we'll have plenty of money to start a mobile fortress, but is it practical for our current location?

OOC: Just thinking outside the box here... what about using a few Scrolls of Mending (Caster level 6). The Mending spell is a cantrip, so the cost of each scroll works out to be 0.5 x 6 x 25 = 75gp.

So, (work with me here)...
- Items that have taken damage in excess of half their total hit points gain the broken condition
- Cold Iron weapons have 30hp, so this sword is somewhere between 0 and 14HP
- Items lose the broken condition if the spell restores the object to half its original hit points or higher.
- The scrolls of mending repair the sword by 1D4 each casting.
- Assuming absolute worst case, we would need 14 scrolls (assuming the caster rolls 14 x 1's in a row) for a total cost of 1050gp in order to sell a sword worth 20000. Best case cost is 300gp (4 x scrolls).
- Since noone is level 6, someone will need to make Use Magic Device checks vs DC7. Note that a Nat1 = a potential scroll mishap. What devious things could our DM come up with :)

OR

- Broken objects can be sold for 75% of their value. In this case 20010 x 75% = 15007.5 - 10% commission = 13506gp at the catacombs right now.

In the interests of progressing the game asap, I'm thinking option 2 - sell it at the catacombs as is.

Thoughts?

(OOC: Firstly, you guys rock.
Now, a few orders of business:

1. The magma diamond's value depends on how well you guys can appraise them. 10-15 will give you 5000gp, 15-20 6000, 20-25 7000, etc. Rules for aid another apply.

2. Braugh, spoiler alert Highlight to display spoiler: {You will be in MountainBurrow for as long as you guys like with some stipulations upon your decision... which is to be revealed shortly in the IC post}

3. Operation Floating Fortress is certainly a possibility. Nothing is stopping you from creating exactly what Deldrid is talking about. BUT, Craft Wondrous Item feat along with a large number of Engineering, carpentry, and other craft checks... like maybe Alchemy for the lab and Smithery for building the forge... and the appropriate time required to create each component must be completed.. and the gold costs. Also note that a carrying capacity of 1200lbs is nothing, when you think a single dwarf with full plate mail and gear probably weighs about 400lbs. And yes, you will be going underground, so be sure to find a good parking place or otherwise be able to fold your fortress into a dimensional pocketbook, because the Floating Fortress Insurance Inc. just went bankrupt. =)

4. I don't remember how much damage Boomy did to that cold iron short sword to break it.

5. Livestock and carriages? There is a larger main entrance/exit that is used for such things if you guys want to exit that way.

Anything else? In-character post coming soon)

The dwarves of The Forged make their temporary home in MountainBurrow.

Tahni and Braugh tell Guy and any other concerned citizens around the brief history of Tina Cloverdale and the fate of the lover's unborn child.

Tears stream from the man's face, yet he holds together.

He and a small crowd follow as Tahni walks with Tally, the Cleric of Flower, who looks like a taller Tramennis, as he carries Tina.

The temple is constructed of several large stone slabs forming an ornate yet simple structure in the mountain, many flowers grow on the outside, making it quite perfume.
Inside, Tally places Tina on a clean bed, looks to Tahni and says, "We will have to perform surgery, along with some powerful magic. Can you help me?"
He pulls a large scroll from a hidden cupboard and opens it. There are glowing blue divine writings on it. Remove Curse

As Siv is welcomed into the Forged by the other dwarves, she knows that BlackAxe himself is from one of the oldest dwarven bloodlines that ruled nations in the Year of Ascension in the great war between Domi and Marteas, indeed royalty in older times. That might explain the chip on his shoulder.
RedForge is not of royalty, but of great generals in the same war.

As the young Cavalier explores the city, she notices an engraving on a stone entrance to a hut to be of clan Turok, an ancient clan that once united thousands of families to delve the mountain of Dordek. They were also one of the few to be banished by Domi to the far corners of the Wold for unknown reasons.

Jarga and Sam walk about the city, gathering folk of all sort, and hit the DrunkButtom tavern and engage with the populace.
From behind the bar, a busty dwarven woman with braided black hair shouts to the Fire Sorcerer, "Hey hun, my oven can certainly use some of your warmth."

The gnomes drinking about slap their knees in laughter.

She laughs and says, "Well, you little lawn ornaments want hot stew or cold stew tonight?"
She points to a large black iron pot resting on wood and kindling.

Sam tells everyone of the trials and tribulations The Forged have undergone with grandeur.
Everyone looks somber at the news and details of RiddlePort, but the heroes vanquishing undead, pirates, troglodytes, and demons proves the mettle of the stone races.

Morality is good
Everyone gets a +1 to all skill checks while you are in MountainBurrow

Sam questions at length looking for relatives, but his name, SnapDragonMcFistiCuffs, is far beyond what they recognize. An older gnome says, "Ye look of good stock m'boy. I feel your lineage may be defined by your actions."

As Deldrid delves into blueprints for a flying fortress that he and his friends may use as a base in the comfort of solitude. Construction of such a device would take weeks and a combined effort of skills and feats, but is certainly doable. Heck, you are a Wizard of creation after all.

Braugh finds that there are many open-air forges well at work in MountainBurrow. Dende stands watching, three gnomes with soot-covered glasses along with two dwarves in large aprons are hammering the steel of a sword in rhythm.

THen you notice, one of the dwarves is BlackAxe.
Sweat pours from his brow as he hammers.

After five minutes, the molten blade is placed into water, steaming the immediate area.

BlackAxe wipes his face with cloth and sits for a moment, looking to Braugh, "Have ye skill lad?"

"My hands are yours. I will do what I can to assist" Tahni replies solemnly to Tally. This is not the first surgery that Tahni will have assisted in, and thankfully Tally seems to know what he is doing. Tahni feels her nerves steady and a feeling of calm as the room stays quiet. She takes her time to carefully clean around the wound, and ensure Tina is in a comfortable position - legs straight and arms by her side. This operation will need to be performed very carefully. She positions herself on the opposite side of Tina, across from Tally, then turns to address Guy. A dwarf needs a feeling of control, and there is nothing worse than to feel helpless in such a situation. Guy needs something to do.

"Normally I would say that it would be best for you to wait outside, Guy. But in this instance, I think having you close to Tina will help remind her that she is still wanted here. Take this cloth. Keep it damp and cool her brow with it." Tahni says quietly to Guy, passing him a clean cloth, before turning back to Tally "Let us begin"

OOC: Once we iron out pricing, I'd like to focus on creating and modifying items. By increasing DCs by +5, a craftsman can reduce time for 1000gp progress from 8 to 4 hours. Base DC for Delrid's items is 8, and He has +12 minimum (+20 max) on related skills. If we're willing to increase by +5 to halve DCs again, that makes 4000gp progress possible daily.

They are made of a supple leather know for its strength and toughness, the creature whose skin is used comes from The Scab. New clothes, a good night sleep, now for a good breakfast. He says to his reflection in the mirror. Before leaving his room he sets a small trap on the door, it will smack anyone trying to enter in the shins but not do any real harm. Make em' think twice if they try for my stuff.

With a full stomach he sets out to find the others making sure everyone is being cared for. He spends time with the refugees helping them to settle in. Finding the group at the forge he sets about working on some parts for more complex traps, things he can pull from his haversack and place with little fuss.

He spends time at the temple with Tahni, not being much of a religious dwarf he acts as an errand boy getting anything they may need.

Tally smiles at Tahni and they together grind several herbs into a paste with a mortar and pestle.
He ignites the herbal paste briefly and then places it on Tina's chest, allowing her to inhale the fumes.
Her body relaxes instantly.

He speaks, There, she is numb. Now the hard part. I need Tahni to keep her stabilize spell on the area I am cutting constantly.

He takes an insanely sharp scalpel and slowly and methodically places it right under the sternum.
Guy gulps as beads of sweat drop from his face.
Tally cuts, Guy almost passes out. Blood begins to exit the cut, but Tahni's hands keep it from flowing freely. Blue energy glows around the four.
He continues the cut down to the dark grey of her abdomen. Tina's veins are black and clogged.
He opens her abdominal cavity, and within you can see her very womb, dark, grey, and necrotic.
Tally says to Guy, "I must remove her uterus and ovaries, they have been corrupted. She will not be able to bear children."

Tally nods to Tahni, saying I need your hands
He requires you reach inside her cavity as he continues to cut. In 10 minutes, he pulls, and places Tina's organs on a stone slab. Then he says, "Read the scroll"
As Tahni chants the incantation, the blue glow radiates outward, and Tina's internal organs begin to look pink and red, her veins lighten and begin to flow blood normally, color returns to her face.

Then, Tally seals the cut with a very fine stitching and a final casting of Cure Light Wounds.

Devlin appears in the temple just as Tahni and Tally finish their surgery and are exiting. (Please use the rules for Designing a trap and craft to get your works to the point that they could be set within a turn or two in the field. So, what kind of traps do you want to have prepped?))

Guy looks absolutely sick. Tally says, "Let her rest. Meet at the DrunkButtom tavern." as he takes the necrotic organs to a back room.

Meanwhile, Braugh begins to help BlackAxe hammer a shoulder-plate to a suit of armor into a wonderful and ornate shape. Then BlackAxe says, "Ye do have skill, I've been thinking of creating a clock to keep track of the passage of time under ground."
Soon though, Deldrid shows up, takes a large piece of iron, and begins crafting both delicate and ornate pieces and cogs. The speed and ease at which he takes each piece, fires, shapes, and puts it together is absolutely amazing.

BlackAxe laughs, "Ha! Well then, it seems the art of creation has not been lost with the generations. Let us go drink."

Meanwhile, Jarga flirts with the braided-black haired woman, who gasps with impress at Jarga's fire skillz.
She smiles broadly and says, "My name is Girtha Stromstroud, currently the best cook in MountainBurrow!" you notice her bustyness shaking as she speaks.
To this, the patrons all cheer and nod in agreement.
Then she looks at Jarga's baby blues and says, "You, sir Hero dwarf, can get to refilling the troughs for the horses outside.... and I'll have a little surprise for you when you return." she winks.

THe Fire Sorcerer sees Blackaxe, Braugh, Deldrid, Tahni, Devlin, Guy and Tally walking into the bar.

Sam contemplates alone about demons as the group enters, he probably joins.

When you sit, Girtha brings you a cabbage, turnip and lentil soup that tastes absolutely amazing.

As the adventure began in a tavern, the next phase shall as well. You sit at a large table.

BlackAxe speaks first, "Deldrid, by great Domi's hand, you are a craftsman with nearly no equal....
Alas, tis a shame we dwarves are reduced to borrowing gnomish forges for our crafts.
Drakesmead has a great foundry and forge where many epic and legendary armaments were created.
It lies at the junction of two great mountain ranges, deep below the fortress, where there is great natural magic."

Then he pauses for a long time and speaks slowly, "I believe with your help, now is the time to strike back at the Duergar and retake our birthright. We are having a conclave with the Gnomish leaders to assess our power and ability to do so. Will you stand with me?"

She doesn't respond straight away though. Yes, the Duergar and Dwarves have been at each others throats since time began. But are the Duergar really the biggest threat? The duergar that she met in Riddleport seemed equally surprised by the devestation. Is there a common enemy? And who is this brotherhood?

"I agree that taking back Drakesmead is in the best interest of all dwarves. I only suggest that we proceed cautiously, and avoid a full assault if possible. The devestation of Riddleport has taken its toll, and we have many depending on us for their survival. We cannot afford to recklessly lose lives." she quickly looks to BlackAxe, realising how her words may be interpreted "I mean you no disrespect or insult, BlackAxe. If you have any plan of attack that would minimise casualties, I would be happy to do whatever I can for the cause" (Diplomacy: 11)

Then, with the money you have been alotted (which was like what 9kish since you started with 13k, and you purchase items. It arrives in a parcel at your local inn in The FOrged

RobC: You certainly can, and as you pointed out - the difference in price is what it will cost you. It's a good way to get the basics early on and upgrade them as you go :)

Delrid - 12/12/10 - CMD13 - HP 29/29  d20+14=16 ;
Thursday November 24th, 2011 9:12:28 AM

Delrid is very intrigued by the prospect of utilizing the Drakesmead forge. The words of BlackAxe hammer at his heart: no dwarf should need a gnomish forge.

The words clang in his chest like a fallen inget, and ring through the chambers of his chest. They stoke the fire of his Dwarven pride, burning hot in his belly. The heat rises, and begins to form those cold words into an idea. As those words become malleable, Delrid forms them from a cold, hard block of shame to the ambition of Dwarven craftsmanship. That ambition pulses through his veins. It flows over those words, and sets the new shape. The vapors and smoke rise, swelling in his throat. Like a chimney, that smoke flows from his throat and out of his mouth...

"No Dwarf should need a Gnomish forge. I will make us a forge before we depart. It will show our Dwarven pride, our burning passion, our stone resolve, our indomitable spirit. This forge, like we brothers and sisters, will travel with us and provide strength, hope, and all we need to defeat our foes!"

Delrid conceptualizes a mobile forge, providing a reliable option for crafting while on the move. Now, to the catacombs for some essential items...

OOC: I plan to battle the black genie bureaucracy. I just saw the rules from Rob's e-mail. It looks... daunting?

Zach R: It's not so bad Ben. I did it in my first couple of months here and got a Prestige Class approved. Just remember the most important this is... Why is it Woldian. If you can get that, the rest falls into place.

OOC: DMs, can Delrid retrain his Scribe Scroll feat for Fast Forge? I haven't scribed a scroll yet. Also, the prerequisite is 4 ranks in spellcraft, but that seems like a 3.0/3.5 number. Any opinions?

This would give the party access to a mobile forge...

Addison: Scribe Scroll is given to Wizards for free at level 1, so you shouldn't have spent one of your feats on it anyways. You can't replace free feats from class features. It seems you chose Skill FOcus Craft and Craft Wondrous Item

OOC: Actually, only the person with the feat could use the Fast Forge. In addition, you'd require the special stylus - which can only be found in game. If only the party were headed somewhere where crafting and legendary forges were found, and perhaps multiple stylus's could also be found *cough* Drakesmead *cough* ;)

As for the prerequisites, they were reduced during the Pathfinder conversion. If memory serves, it used to have a prerequisite of 2 item creation feats. Ouch. Based on Cayzle's email, we (the Forged players) could certainly make a reasonable argument in the BGC for improving the Fast Forge time of non-magical items. As for the prerequisites though, couldn't hurt to try?

OOC: I'll also be putting to the BGC that that Cooperative Crafting feat from the APG should also work with the Fast Forge Feat - that is, if two characters have Fast Forge, and one has cooperative crafting, they can work together. So hypothetically...
- both Tahni and Delrid had Fast Forge
- Tahni takes the Cooperative Crafting Feat
- Delrid goes the Fixer rout
- Tahni would be able to assist Delrid in the Forge by providing access to divine spells, as well as "doubling the gp value of items that can be crafted each day."
Just a thought

Loot Split

Hi all, well, the loot has finally been processed and the value approved. Taking into account the sale of the broken sword, Tahni's awesome appraise of the diamonds, compound interest calculated daily, etc, etc and so forth, the loot allocation is as follows:
Siv.........14278.34gp + Starting Wealth (13k)
Bruagh...16298.34gp + Amulet of Natural Armor+1 + Addy Breastplate
Sam.......19628.34gp + Ring of Force Shield
Jarga.....24278.34gp + Starting Wealth (3k)
Tahni.....24564.84gp + Ring of Protection+1 + Mithral Buckler
Delrid.....27278.34gp
Devlin....27278.34gp

This puts everyone on the same wealth: a whopping 27278.34gp!!!

*Note: Sam, you got assigned the ring on your absence, however if you choose to sell it, it will put you on equal footing/net worth with everyone else.

Also, the only party items NOT sold were: 8 x Cure Light Wounds potions, 2 x Cure Moderate Wounds potions, and a jewelled scepter that applifies your voice (possible use for our bard friend, Sam?)

So, where to from here? Why, to the Catacombs of course! :)

@Devlin: Generally speaking - yes. One would be the scabbard, and the other could potentially be called a leather grip around the hilt of the weapon, or some other thing you come up with. Note that multiple of the same effect will not stack - ie: you can't have a scabbard of vigour & a slotless scabbard of vigour for the same weapon. But you could have a scabbard of vigour and a slotless scabbard of stanching.

Sunday November 27th, 2011 6:34:36 AM

OOC: Crafting types -

We don't have access to Gillan's Fast Forge Feat, nor an Ishgara Stylus.

I'm looking into creating a forge, and purchasing a portable hole. I've got tools, and I plan to cobble together some essentials for crafting (magical heat source, anvil, raw materials, work bench). However, the Fast Forge only allows one person to enter, and a portable hole could have 2-3 folks working together.

I'm guessing the portable hole and supplies will run a little over 24K, so if you're interested please let me know. I also plan to purchase a ring of sustenance, so Delrid will gain an extra 6 hours of productivity every day.

From that perspective, we could have two people crafting all day:
1) Crafters share a portable hole
2) We have an inexpensive wagon or sled
3) We put the extradimensional space on the floor of the wagon
4) Either we assist one another, or work simultaneously on separate projects, and stuff gets made swiftly

For the rest of the party, if you look long term at not only wondrous items in which you're interested, but also potentially arms and armor (we'll get to 5th level someday, but it might be 2013). We can stock up on supplies now and look to create everything for the entire party with dwarven hands.

Delrid plans to take at least the following item creation feats:
Scribe Scroll (already got it)
Craft Wondrous Item (already got it)
Craft Magic Arms and Armor (5th Level)
Craft Construct (5th Level bonus)

For 7th and beyond, Delrid will propose some of the crafting acceleration feats to the Wold. 3.0/3.5 had crafting feats allowing for more swift or less expensive crafting.

I'm thinking Bruagh and Tahni at least would be interested...

Tahni -- AC18/14/15 -- CMD 10 -- HP 35/35 -- Rob C
Sunday November 27th, 2011 7:32:18 PM

OOC:

One slight problem with that plan....
From the Portable Hole listing: "It contains enough air to supply one Medium creature or two Small creatures for 10 minutes."
Now, there are ways to get around that, but I'm wondering if we're over complicating things. Also, for wondrous items - we don't need a forge/heat source :) Granted, for armor, weapons and rings we do - but for wondrous items & constructs, we don't.

Why not just an item that grants the Fast Forge Feat? Plenty of other items grant the equivalent of a feat, and from memory, they cost around 20k. The big bonus of the fast forge is to be able to craft things twice as quick, and that is enough to steer me away from the portable hole approach.

Fyi, Tahni's plans are as follows:
Level 5: Fast Forge
Level 7: Cooperative Crafting. This will allow Delrid to craft things for half the gp and half the time, as well as having Tahni there to provide spells.

So just with those two alone (and who knows what other perks you could throw in there should Delrid go the fixer route), Delrid & Tahni would be crafting things for half the gp and one quarter the time :)
Example 1: Mirror of Life Trapping. Normal cost to buy: 200,000gp. Normal Cost to build: 100,000gp. With this approach, cost to build is 50,000gp, so 25days crafting, reduced to 13 days in the fast forge with Tahni's help.
Example 2: +9 Weapon (+1 Holy Keen Vorpal Sword?). Normal cost to buy: approx 160,000. Normal cost to build: 80,000. With this approach, cost to build is 40,000gp, so 20days crafting, reduced to 10 days in the fast forge with Tahni's help.

*************************************************************
Devlin, Deldrid, Tahni, and Braugh say they will support a retaking of the ancient dwarven fortress, the Oracle adding the caveat that it should not be done recklessly.

BlackAxe nods, "Aye, it's decided then. I shall raise the issue. Eat and sleep well. On the morrow we shall convene."

You are all given rooms and bath.

Towards the end of the night, Girtha passes by the table and whispers to Jarga's ear, "Come, let me show you the royal suite.", her hand guides yours....

---------------The world seems to rest-------------

In the middle of the night, Tahni tosses and turns, visions blind her mind's eye
Your running across a dark lava-encrusted landscape
A flash of light in the distance.
THe earth shakes

The Oracle awakens and feels a deep pressure on her chest.

-----------The morning----------------

BlackAxe, in full military regalia, stands waiting, "Come, we meet within the hour."

Then you are marching through the city of MountainBurrow.
Gnomes move here and there farming, crafting, and building into the very mountainside.
One excited little guy runs from a far tunnel jumping for joy. A small crowd gathers and you hear a lot of Oooooo and Ahhhh
He holds a very pretty amythest gem.

Dende runs from the group and gives Tahni a big hug, he joins the caravan.

BlackAxe leads you to the fortified stone wall that is the fortress at the center of the city.

You enter and look about the immediate courtyard where gnome and dwarves alike train with blade and bow.

You see Roger RedForge, the elderly, yet muscled red-bearded dwarf standing shirtless in a circle drawn in the dirt with a shield and wooden axe.
Across from him is an older gnomish man with a white gotee, holding an odd hook-hammer double weapon.
A ref says, Begin

axe swipe, duck, block, hammer donk, reposte, shield bash, sidestep, duck.

The gnomish man ducks and tumbles on the ground around RedForge, knocking him on the knees twice with hammer.
RedForge grunts in pain, and counters by bull-rushing his gnomish counterpart, pushing him out of the circle.
The onlookers shout in approval.

RedForge wipes his face with towel and says, "Always more than one way to claim victory.", and he helps the gnome up.

They both begin to put on loose-fitting clothes, stretching their old yet fit muscles, the Gnomish man moves to shake the hand of Braugh, "Marquin Luecraft, general of the MountainBurrow defense corps, and it appears brute strength trumps superior skill yet again?"

RedForge scoffs as the pair join you on the walk.

Tally is seen blessing the heads of several soldiers that are about to go on a scouting mission.
A light blue hue surrounds the three gnomish and one dwarven scouts as Tally hums a tune to Flower.
They each thank the cleric and give alms before leaving on their mission. They nod with smiles on their faces at each of you.

Tally says to BlackAxe, "As you ordered Sir, they are off to gather intel on DrakesMead. With any luck, we should hear back from them via a Whispering Wind spell in 3 days."

BlackAxe nods, and Tally joins.

You enter the center fortress, walking through a large torch-lit, tapestry-decorated hall.

A large room, with a huge table and many ornate chairs lies before you.
On the table are many maps and tablets with numbers and figures on them.

BlackAxe says, "Please sit, we have many things to discuss."

In the room you see Mr. GoodButtom eating grapes who waves you at you. Next to him, Mrs. GoodButtom types frantically into a type-writer like device.

There is also a very young gnomish man in a blue coat and orange straw hat, who smiles and waves at you, "Hi, I'm Alchy, CEO and founder of Alchy-mist, the potion for your notion brand. Pleasure to be a part of the decision-making process! May all our endeavors be prosperous."

Sitting next to him are a veeeeerrrryyy old gnomish couple. Their hair and skin are both dingy and grey, as the stones themselves. Somehow you hear their names in the back of your head, as if echoed from the cave walls around you ,Titinia and Oburon. They smile at you.

BlackAxe speaks, "And so begins the fourth convene since RiddlePort's destruction.
With the partial destruction of the bridge into The Scab and happenings of RiddlePort, it seems we may be the last foothold for our people to establish our home in this land.
We don't know when reinforcements will arrive... if ever.
It is obvious that some forces are working against us, so we must work harder to prepare ourselves.
We know how safe a fortress such as DrakesMeade is. And we also know the treasures that lie within.
With our current strength and with the help of these heroes, it is possible to retake DrakesMeade from Duergar forces and shift the balance of power in our favor. We can then use the forge to create what we need to protect what we have and eventually conquer the Scab! We must show our rivals we are strong and not to be trifled with!"

He points at DrakesMeade on his Map of the Scab

....Then, there is a moment of silence...

The incredibly Old Gnomish woman, Titinia, speaks soft like the wind, "War results in death. We are few."

Mrs. GoodButtom then perks up from her typing and shows a piece of parchment on the table, "There are currently 6,499 Gnomish and 1,042 Dwarven lives dependent on MountainBurrow for sustainment. 812 Gnome and 398 Dwarves are military-trained. A few hundred more are of able-bodied age and could be drafted."

Then Alchy says looking at the , "Indeed the investment may be profitable, but a march across the Mangrove Flats is not a pleasant journey." he states, pointing to the large expanse of sandy-looking planes that rest between the three eastern mountain ranges.

RedForge looks to his Gnomish friend, Marquin and nods, "The Duergar have held DrakesMeade for nearly a century now. They are swift to tunnel and dig in defenses. The place was meant to withstand assaults from Giants! It would take most, if not all of our forces to even make success a possibility. MountainBurrow will be vulnerable, and left more weak than we currently are win or lose!"

BlackAxe looks to Braugh, Devlin, Deldrid, Tahni and the rest of the heroes with a raised eyebrow.

OOC: Nice post, Addison! Oh, and if Jarga catches any sort of disease he has to cure it himself :)

Tahni awakens during the night from her restless sleep. The visions she has started to see during the day feel clearer in her dreams, but are still confusing. Something is happening in the Scab, and whatever it is, it makes her feel uneasy. She lies back in bed and stares at the ceiling until she is enveloped by sleep again.

In the morning, Tahni reciprocates Dende's hug. For such a young boy who has been through so much, he certainly has matured. But such is the nature of the dwarves. Once he is out of earshot, Tahni has a word with Bruagh "I believe our young friend here wishes to be a paladin, and has decided to model himself on you. He could do worse I suppose." she says with a smile and chuckles as they walk.

It is Tally though that Tahni has been wanting a word with, so is grateful when the cleric joins the procession. "Good morning to you Tally. Have you checked in on Tina and Guy this morning? If I can be of assistance with any other patients here, please let me know"

Once in the convene, Tahni feels compelled to give a nod of her head to the two gnome elders, then listens intently to the discussions. "Nearly a century? No doubt the Duergar have a tight grasp of DrakesMeade." Not being the most military minded, she waits to see what suggestions the group may have.

OOC: Question to DM: The 3 days for the scouts to return - can we assume we have 3 days crafting? :)

Delrid is extremely appreciative. He has never had the opportunity to witness, let alone partake in, any social or noble ongoings. As he sees the very old couple, his fingertips instinctively reach for the ring in his pocket. He catches himself, then scans the room to see if anyone else noticed. He feels tears of shame and rejection start to form, and focuses more intently on the words of Alchy.

Delrid is very hesitant to speak at the council, but if asked he will pose the following question: "What of a diplomatic envoy? Huddled alone and separately, noble races fear the scab and the mountains. Together could they share prosperity?"

For those who have yet to meet me, I am Sam, the group's bard and self-proclaimed, fledgling tactician. I have a few questions. What is the estimate on the numbers of Duergar forces? Is there anyway we can lure any number of them out for an ambush? Lastly, do we have any knowledge of secret entry into their caves by which a small force could enter and surprise them?

He keeps an eye out for a vendor that might sell flowers or sweets that he might buy on the way back. He knows his stay here is likely temporary but why not make the most of a small glint of joy in an otherwise dark few years.

He settles in to listen to the council and, on hearing Delrid talk of peace he agrees:

" Aye, what of diplomacy? Words can often end wars in lieu of slaughter... " he pauses, and looks to the floor ashamed for a moment before looking back up " ... and so can a well placed dagger in the dark. "

I'm all fer being that dagger, we tried diplomacy with a small band we caught. It only got us escaped prisoners and more headaches. If I know the darkbloods they will use any sign of diplomacy as a means ta get an assasin close ta our leaders. They have no reason ta talk with us, they have a fortified position and means to hold out against a long siege.

Devlins voice has been steadily raising while he speaks. He takes a second to clear his thoughts and calm his voice before continuing.

I don't know much about large battles but I do know how ta enter a place unseen and cause mayhem. If the others agree I will lead them into the hold and attack a key position or target of opportunity. This should draw off some of their forces and cause confusion allowing Blackaxe and Redforge to lead the main group in a suprise attack.

Sheesh I sound like the morons from the tales my sister used ta tell me. I know how those really ended. Not with the hero victorious but with him in chains or worse.

Devlin sits and listens to the others ideas quietly contemplating if this will work or not.

Bruagh speaks as an advisor and diplomat rather than a friend. "I've had dealings with the Duergar of the Scab in the past. The have proven themselves less than honorable and completely untrustworthy. They were, after all, the force that destroyed the bridge at Riddleforge. I vote that we forgo any attempts at resolving this with diplomacy as doing so will only give away our most valuable asset. Surprise. If we know a way to enter with a small yet powerful force, gaining entry through hidden passages or the like, we might save countless lives. However, I am not naive enough to think that dedicated ourselves with anything less than our all will do anything aside from be our downfall. I say we go hard, go with our all, and retake Drakemead."

Having heard other members of the party speak, Tahni then chooses to provide her input "Reluctantly, I must agree with Bruagh and Devlin. Whilst I would prefer to choose a diplomatic route, I see no argument or barter we could offer that would make the Duergar give up DrakesMeade. If taking back Drakesmeade is necessary, then I also agree that if possible, a small party should try to infiltrate the fortress first. If timed correctly, they may be able to cause enough disruption to the defences - perhaps even open the entrances - to allow other forces to enter." Tahni sighs and looks around the room "What concerns me though is this new type of weapon the Duergar appear to be in possession of. We encountered such a device on the bridge, and that one device alone destroyed it. It is possible a similar weapon was used in Riddleport. If the Duergar have this kind of weaponry at their disposal, then we must consider any kind of assault against them carefully"

OOC:
Hey Ben (Delrid),

Sorry, I still can't see the value of having the mobile forge at this level.

Use of a Forge
The forge would only be required for crafting rings, armor or weapons - and noone has those feats yet. Creating wondrous items does not require a forge or heat source. Creating non-magical items takes so long due to the broken PF rules, that they really cannot be done without the Fast Forge feat (and then some!)

Ability to Craft on the Road
If it's a matter of crafting items "on the road", then the rules already allow for that: "If the caster is out adventuring, he can devote 4 hours each day to item creation, although he nets only 2 hours' worth of work. This time is not spent in one continuous period, but rather during lunch, morning preparation, and during watches at night. If time is dedicated to creation, it must be spent in uninterrupted 4-hour blocks."

So given we have no need for a forge, heat source, or dedicated crafting area, I can't see the point of the portable hole approach. You may have something different in mind that I haven't considered though.

cheers!

ooc-demon slaying holy crossbow purchased for a whopping 18,335 gp.

Could use a little guidance on the remaining 8,943.34 gp. (dropped the shield ring)

What exactly in game terms does the scepter do and what is it worth?

Addison: Try it and find out. =)

ooc1: Huh, I have to post in the Catacombs? Well.... I'll go do that then.

ooc2: Does our little group have a name?

Siv listens quietly to the words of wisdom from her companions. During a lull, she clears her throat and speaks, directing her words to Blackaxe. "The duergar will hold the fortress as tightly as Ffloy's purse strings. Motivating them to relinquish or abandon the installation would be very difficult. General Blackaxe, I would share in your knowledge, if you would let me. What intelligence do we currently have regarding their troop strength and disposition, general equipment, fixed armaments, divine and arcane spellcasters, provisions, supply lines, communication, local area traffic, patrol routes, and current officers?"

ooc3: Using aid another to boost Bruagh's Diplomacy roll.

ooc: Can Tahni make Wondrous Items for other party members? Could I just purchase the crafting materials from the Catacombs and Tahni can whip it up while we travel? It would just be some Strength enhancers so there wouldn't be much of a hurry.

OOC:

@Sam - What about some utility type items? Wands, scrolls, potions, those sort of things that might come in handy.

@Siv - Sure can :) Jarga has asked for a few things too, but Tahni is happy to setup a "to craft" list and take it in turns to craft for different people. And Delrid may be happy to do the same as well
