The Mermaid's Corpse

Co-DM Cayzle
Friday December 9th, 2011 7:23:46 AM

The general consensus, such as it is, is to keep looking for information. The harbor seems like a natural place to find a captain, and the party heads that way. With some simple poking around and an inquiry at the harbormaster's office, you find out that Captain Nakresh is an orc, and his ship, The Mermaid's Corpse, is an orcish privateer. The ship is still at berth, in fact.

OOC: Laptop died. I'm using the old laptop, but that needs a look-see at the shop too. So both laptops are headed to the shop today. I'll use my wife's desktop later, but posting may be scattered for me for the next few days.

Koz'Um Dawl and Yel'kno urge the group to head for the orcish pirate ship. You can see its ratty rigging up ahead as you stand dockside in Bonetown. How will you approach? What time of day? It is late afternoon now, after a busy morning at the shopkeepers and a busy afternoon at the Temple.

Dilantar suggests, "Perhaps we should send a message to the captain to see if he would like to meet up somewhere, maybe a neutral ground. I would rather not be on his ship, with his crew backing him up, if he decides we are asking too many questions." Dilantar waits patiently for a response. "Or, we could call it a day and report back what we do know and contact the captain tomorrow."

"Let's just go talk to him. It probably is more dangerous but he's more likely to ignore a message if he's getting ready to set sail. Harder to ignore all of us. Feels wrong though, going to talk to an orc for help." Rogar says.

"Somehow I doubt we could convince him to come off his ship and meet us if we asked... but I'm not sure I like the idea of going on his ship either. He's a pirate and could just have likely have helped Lansel as killed him. I think our best bet might be stake out the dock near by and see if he frequents a tavern near by. In my experience, a captain isn't too hard to pick out from his crew so if he leaves we should be able to spot him." Yel'kno adds in, looking out towards where the ship is berthed.

The consensus seems to be that the party would prefer to speak with Captain Nakresh on some neutral spot. The trick is to arrange such a meeting. You spend a little time tying to get some information, and you learn that all the sailors on the Mermaid's Corpse have been sticking very close to their ship, which is unusual. Usually sailors come ashore to carouse. But these have stayed on board. The Captain has been on shore looking for someone, you don't find out who.

Failing to find the captain, you decide to go to the ship.

At the Corpse, there are orc sailors in studded leather armor standing guard with spears. You would have to brave those reach weapons to walk up the gangplank to get on board.

"Well, since we were unable to establish a suitable meeting place, there is nothing for it but to go aboard. However I will see if the Captain would be kind enough to meet with us peacefully." Dilantar approaches the guards with his hands in plain view and not making any threatening motions. "Good day, may we speak to Captain Nakresh regarding a missing person? We were sent by Brother Engev to look for a missing friend of his. Is there somewhere we can meet that is a neutral ground to both parties? Any help you can give us regarding this matter is appreciated." Dilantar waits patiently for the guards to respond.

Spire, who has been unusually quiet in this search for the captain, finally speaks up as Dilantar goes to speak with the guards. "Why aren't we doing this a bit more... diplomatically?" He looks at Baird and says, "You've got the silver tongue, pretty boy, get us on board."

Rogar follows Dilantar, standing behind him and off to the side. His nunchaku were concealed at the small of his back, under the sash that wrapped around his arms and torso. Not that he needed them. It was good he wasnt doing the talking because he didnt like orcs. Yeah some orcs were even civilized, more or less, but his dwarven blood didnt care.

Yel'kno cannot help but feel that something in off when he hears that most of Nakresh's crew have stayed onboard the ship. That just wasn't natural for a group of sailors in port. He knew from experience that sailors with coins to spent went to port as soon as able, it was as natural as the tides ebb and flow.

"Nakresh is either hiding something or wants to be able to leave quick. Or both." the dark skinned sailor voices his opinion to the group as they make their way towards the ship.

Once within earshot of the guards however, he keeps his lips sealed and takes a good look at the guards and the ship, looking for anything out of the ordinary other than sailors stay on board, but only manages to catch sight of the glare off the water.

With a nod and a slight smile at the introduction as "pretty boy" Baird steps up to the orcs and looks directly into their eyes. "May the luck of Wardd be with you. We wish to speak to Captain Nakresh about a business venture. I believe he will want to speak to us personally." As he waits for the guard to respond or fetch the captain Baird rejoins the group. "I don't want to go on his ship but refusing may be seen as a sign of weakness. I don't want to show orc pirates any weakness at all."

Rogar has a natural disinclination to deal with these orcs, and the somewhat more rational Yel'kno says that something is not right.

With Spire offering "encouragement," Dilantar and Baird make compelling speakers, and the orcs do not immediately attack you.

Yel'kno sees some orcs with slings in the rigging. It was not hard to see them since they are swinging their slings in a somewhat threatening manner.

An orc in chain mail comes up from below. He listens and then shouts down, "Captain's not here! Come back at second moonrise!"

"They seem none too friendly. I'd rather not be trapped below decks having to fight our way out of a crowd of angry brutes." He looks at the group, his eyebrow raised quizzically. "Are we seriously going to consider this?"

Again, once outside of ear shot of the orcs, Yel'kno will add in his dissent. "I have to agree with Spire. Some of you can see in the dark, but I'm not among you." and he nods his head towards the ship, "We know the Captain isn't on board and there is only one way for him to get back. The group backs away from the orc ship, faced with a conundrum. No one wants to come back to a fully armed orc ship at night. So you decide to wait for the captain. You are careful to avoid looking like an ambush. You leave lots of room for walking by. You do not have your weapons drawn.

You are watched carefully from the orc ship, but you are left alone.

And after sunset, three orcs approach the dock and walk towards you. One calls out, "What is this?" the three orcs draw weapons. "Who are you, and what do you want?"

On the way to the tavern Baird hags to the back sullenly. "I thought we were going to find somewhere else to sleep, I don't like that place. Brother Engev I bear no ill will, but that that temple gives me no peace and some headache."

Baird seems to draw himself out of his foul mood as the Sea Shanty comes into view, hoping that there might be a game of dice or other gambling that he might be able to increase the fund available to him and possibly his friends. After being directed to the booth Baird orders some mead for himself and indicates that he will cover the first round of any who wish to partake. Sitting down casually and extending his hand in a firm handshake common among those who work hard for a living, Baird introduce himself and the others gesturing at each in turn sparing a nod to the man and a lopsided smile for the woman. On the way to the Tavern, Rogar says to the others, "Brother Engev has no head for coin. He doesnt have very much. Certainly not enough for what he wishes to do in this town."

After waking up, Dilantar spends some time with his kit preparing materials for bombs and his mutagen, which is slightly green in color. He then prepares a formula for healing wounds, just in case of an emergency. Dilantar seems hesitant to accept the coin, but takes it in the end. "While I do not wish to deprive you of money, I will take the reward to further my research." Dilantar follows the rest of the group to the Sea Shanty and approaches the two strangers that were pointed out to them. "Good day to you, I am Dilantar Krenwae'afein, how are you called?" Dilantar waits patiently for a response before sitting down.

At the tavern, the party finds the indicated table occupied by two humans. Alphonse is unarmored, and is feeding his parrot. The female is wearing scale armor.

Yel'kno sees that the female has a longsword, a dagger, and a steel shield.

Spire notices magic. Does he take the time to stare intently and obviously?

Baird, more friendly, buys a round of drinks.

Rogar's thoughts remain with poor Brother Engev.

Dilantar actually introduces himself! [OOC: At least one of you did! LOL!]

Perhaps a conversation will ensue?

Giada is an attractive young human female who appears to be in her early 20's. She wears clean scale mail and a blue tunic. She has long blonde hair, bright blue eyes and the fairest of skin. There appears to be an aura of wealth and privilege about her. She wields a long sword which she has secured to her side and a large metal shield on the floor leaning against her bench. The shield dawns a symbol of a golden falcon. She stands when the others approach to greet them properly.

ooc: Im so sorry everyone. Im new to this and didnt know how to post. Im a "virgin PBEMer". And that's not pronounced "virgin Plumber" :)

OOC: As our illustrious DM has been saying this last week or so: Things slow down over the holidays so don't worry about missing a day here and there. You'll have time to get up to speed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yel'kno moves up the occupied table with the others in the group, but doesn't sit or get too close. He doesn't want to make the two sitting to feel either crowded or surrounded by the sudden attention they're getting. Instead, he just offers a friendly smile in greeting, but otherwise remains quiet.
OOC: Excellent description, Giada! Yel'kno (and everybody else) what do people see when they look at you?
((OOC: First off, don't worry about not knowing how to do something, we are always ready to help :), mostly anyways, I do have wife/hospital things going on so I may not be able to respond all the time, but someone else in the group surely will))
Seating himself accross from the two individuals, Dilantar is a slender, dark-skinned drow that has very short hair done up in spikes. He wears leather armor, along with a belt that is festooned with pouches and vials. He also has a backpack that is clinking with the sound of glass and other items gently knocking against each other when he moves. Lastly, a side pocket in the backpack has a journal poking out of it, with various loose leafs of parchment sticking haphazardly in it. He has silver eyes and a kindly smile. "Perhaps after my friends make their introductions, we can hear your names?" Dilantar slides his backpack off his shoulders with an audible sigh and places it on the ground next to him, checking first to ensure that he isnt setting it in the way of anyone, and also being careful not to disturb it.
Yel'kno is a tall, lanky human with dark, jet black skin and barely an ounce of fat on him so that his skin is stretched tight over a lightly muscled frame. He wears a faded suit of leather armor with a bow of his shoulders and a sword, knife and quiver at his waist. HIs eyes are sea foam green and his infectious smile of perfect, brilliant white teeth sticks out in contrast to his ebony skin.
Spire, content that the man isn't just a con artist, blinks and dispels Detect Magic. The tall elf sits down across the table from the man in the robes. He has rather dark blonde hair, that could even qualify as a very light brown. His eyes are a bright green that almost seem to glow in contrast to his pale skin. In his left hand his carries a longbow, intricately carved with what look like tribal markings and arcane symbols. On the palm of his left hand you can see a tattoo of a spitting viper, the rest of it coiling up his arm to his elbow. He also sports a thin pink scar, running down his left cheekbone to his throat. Looking as the magician, he nods and says, "Hello, fellow spellslinger. I trust you are the one called Elfonce."
"It's pronounced Alphonse," says Alphonse. He shifts into a more relaxed posture and pulls a pipe from the folds of his robes.
"You're quite a group," he says, pulling out a pouch of tobacco and stuffing some in the end of the pipe, "Do you need a spell cast? Or perhaps you have need of a scroll?"
*Prestidigitation to light the pipe*
Alphonse snaps his fingers, sending a few blue sparks into the pipe, then inhales deeply.
"Or are you looking for something else, perhaps?" Smoke pours from his nose, the smell of tobacco and ozone filling the air.
Baird leans forward resting both hands on the table the left of which has a 4 inch scar visible through a matching rip in his shirt. "Someone else actually. We are assisting Brother Engev in locating his friend and assistant, Lansel. We were told that he was trying to find you."
Baird is a few inches taller than the average human and has short cropped wavy blond hair with a strawberry blond goatee and light blue eyes. Lightly tanned skin and a muscular frame from his years spent as a sailor. Though not overly handsome people seem drawn to his witty remarks and sarcasm delivered with a friendly smile to remove any insult.
As you talk and make introductions, the business of the tavern goes on uninterrupted. Patrons go in and out. A barmaid takes your orders and brings out drinks. Four especially burly fellows come in and sit at the table next to you.
[OOC: Regular posting resumes Tuesday morning with an early post from your DM.]
(Walter) AC 17/17/14 -- CMD 19 HP 11 / 11 Rogar Stonefist
Friday December 30th, 2011 11:28:10 AM
Rogar stands 4' 6" tall and a muscular stocky build as all dwarves tend to have. He wears sandals, loose brown pants, and a white sash around his waist. A long scarf starts at one wrist and coils up his arm. The scarf then criss crosses his chest several times before coiling down the other arm ending at the wrist. Rogar's head is bald and covered with the symbols of his order. His beard is trimmed into a neat gotee instead of the long traditional dwarven beard. Despite his unusual appearence his most unique feature is the stone grey coloring of his hands.
Rogar gives a tired nod to the newcomers and orders an ale with some bread and cheese. He sits down with a sigh, problems heavy on his shoulders. Problems with no solutions.
"Lansel? Is he missing?" asks Alphonse, a look of concern spreading across his face, "I last saw him a few days ago. He was very excited to talk to some Orcish pirate. I tried to talk him out of it, but Lansel... so bloody-minded that one. He kept saying he was 'so close.' I wasn't sure what he meant, but perhaps the pirate did him in."
Alphonse take another long drag from his pipe.
"I'd hate to think Lansel had sunk to piracy, but then again, he always was a bit of an odd fellow. I didn't really know him that well - we had more of a professional relationship, you understand."
Alphonse furrows his brow in thought and absent-mindedly feeds another slice of mango to the green macaw on his shoulder.
"Were you hired by this Brother... Engrev, you said? Or are you doing this out of the kindness of your own purses?"
Yel'kno (Jon) AC 16/13/13 CMD 15 HP 12/12
"It is more of a favor for Brother Engrev than employment. The good Brother tended to some of our wounds after we got into a scrap when we first arrived to the city.. for me, this search is a way to repay him."
Yel'kno lets out a sigh then and looks to the others in his group, "It would seem we have two possibilities.. either Lansel visited Captain Nakresh as the Captain said and then something happened to him on the way back to meet Alphonse here or Captain Nakresh did something to him."
He didn't mention the third option of Alphonse lying, but figured that was best since the magician was sitting right there.
