DM Jim Tuesday November 22nd, 2011 10:08:27 PM
As you may know by now, I'll be your new DM :)
I would like a short statement, either here in a private post, or via email, about one short and one long term goal you have for your character.
Also, what you would like to do next--continue on with the Ring or pursue something else of my devising?
Thanks all and it's great to be back :)
Assistant DM James Tuesday November 22nd, 2011 11:25:55 PM
ooc: Obtaining Steel Grass was actually the goal I had when Jim first was DM for this campaign, although I was able to get an upgrade at the conversion. Bosk's father was wrongly put to death for the murder of his mother. Although his father's name was later cleared thanks to a Grim, it left him with a constant need to bring honor to his families name. You can expect Bosk to be drawn to things that may elevate his reputation, stature, and cause him to stand out.
Jim Let me know if you need anything from me. I'll be shooting you an email tomorrow after class, after my exam. Over the Holidays I will be checking over everyone's Character Sheets (We just switched to APG upon exiting the ring) and hope to spend some time updating the wiki.
Beriothian (Will)-- AC:22/16/16 HP:57/57 CMD = 22 Wednesday November 23rd, 2011 12:37:53 AM
ooc: we have one new player and at least one player building a new character for APG, so it may be worth considering putting off the final (and assumedly most difficult) ring challenge until we get a feel for our current party makeup. Also, who wouldn't jump at the chance for something of your devising?
Goals coming...
Zane Stormfront AC 25 CMD 22 HP 48/50 Wednesday November 23rd, 2011 12:44:55 AM
OOC: Zane, never knew his parents. He was found as a child drifting on the stern of a ship named Stormfront, it is the name he took when he became old enough to make the decision. He would like to eventually know why he was brought this far from the Taur Islands as a babe. His goal is to explore his magical heritage. How he came to have Dragon blood running through his veins. Were his parents even aboard the ship when it was demolished. Was it even a real ship, where did he come from, it's all a mystery to him.
As for other things, he wants to expand his magical and physical prowess, as it comes to dealing with his new friends, and hopefully his new family. He is decidedly unTaur in his views and morals, he has a lot to learn yet.
For DM info, he's following the path of the Dragon Disciple, with ideas to go in a different direction eventually.
Tap Tap Tap... This Thing On?
Rude Awakening -- DM Jim Wednesday November 23rd, 2011 4:43:18 PM
The day had passed rather enjoyably, it was in fact a "shopper's sky" outside the tower, in the confines of Hook City's walls--which was like every other day within the seemingly perfect environment of the magically enhanced city. The buzz of flies were non-existent; there wasn't a bird in the perfectly blue sky above to soil any part of the city with it's droppings; and the air was as fresh as it was after a lightning storm that had cleared away all the awful smells that people and animals could raise--everyday, every hour, every minute. Paradise.
Outside the walls; in the streets the children screamed, the lovers cried, and the poets dreamed--rogues and villians stood at every corner, if you weren't a victim, you were a mourner. The plight of the people went unheard, gold and jewels passed them by, and the thin line between living and surviving became quickly blurred. Who would save these people, who would make a difference? No one. No one. No one.
It was warm, comfortable, luxurious almost, but what was that strange tapping? Tap. Tap. Tap. As Zeoll rose from his deep sleep, in the faint light he could see the dim outline of the two Lost Girls that haunted the tower. Each had scornful looks upon their faces as they stared down at a sleepy-eyed Zeoll.
"Why haven't you found him?"
"Yes, why? We asked you a long time ago, did you forget?"
"I bet he did. All he does is play music when we try to talk to him."
"You're right, Mary. Why haven't you done what you said you would do, Zeoll?"
"Yeah, answer Claire and me, why haven't you found our killer, the man who sold you this tower?"
"Mother weeps all the time, she doesn't see the rest of your friends and you all the time like Mary and I do. When she does she thinks she's being robbed, that people have broken into her home."
"Do we need some Tea Time?!"
"Remember last time we had Tea Time?"
"Yeah, fun fun fun!"
"If you don't want to play, you'll pay, Zeoll."
"Fix this. Fix it now!"
"Now!"
"NOW!!!"
The last image of the girls the liontaur remembers before they fade away were of their bulging eyes--the white expanse of each with a minute pinprick of blood in the center.
Zeoll (HP35 of 35, AC22, CMD17) Wednesday November 23rd, 2011 9:45:52 PM
Zeoll leaps up and hastens to retell this story to all his comrades.
He uses his own [memory subdomain] Recall power to jog his memory.
Standing in front of the now closed door were two little identical twin girls who were human and looked about eight years old each, but they were as beautiful as any elvish princesses the pair had ever seen. "Tea time!" both said in unison as they rushed Valla and Zeoll. There was no time to reaction (malevolence, no AoO) as both girls rushed the pair of Iron Adventurers and disappeared into their respective hosts. It was a strange feeling, like being three feet thick and being able to look at your body from the inside looking out, but not being able to affect said body. Before the pair realized their bodies, which included their ability to speak, were not under their control, they were moving upstairs to a series of rooms--one in particular, the twins room. For nearly the next ten hours they had a tea party. Both Valla and Zeoll were dressed in bonnets, their hair had been done up in curls and nearing the end of their ten hour ordeal, each were wearing copious amounts of makeup, in particular, blue eyeshadow--"You can never wear too much blue eyeshadow, right sis?" To which the twin sister concurred and added, "Or red lipstick." The pair was ghastly to look upon in the near mirror and as they felt the power of the twins beginning to lessen their hold over them both, one sister said to the other, "I think it's clobbering time." They both rose up in unison, moved away from the tea table they had elaborately set up and began pummeling each other senseless. After several blows, Valla's body succumbed to the non-lethal beating and passed out. Zeoll's body stood triumphant over the elf's and then he began beating his head against the wall. All it took was a couple of blows and he too was out like a light. how much time passed was uncertain, but as each were about to regain consciousness, they could feel the twins once again slip into them. "Tea time!" This went on again and again until Zeoll managed to force back the twin that was trying to enter his body. With swift legs, Zeoll took up Valla--who had yet again succumbed to his twin entity, and fled downstairs to the front door to escape. "Don't come back!" yelled the twin as she chased behind him. Then as he opened the front door, Valla turned to him, looked him straight in the eyes and said in a little girls voice, "If you come back, we'll roast your eyes and eat your flesh." Then the ghost left Valla's body and the pair exited the tower--the door swiftly slamming shut behind them. As he stood there panting, Zeoll's faithful dog came around the corner and barked at his return--his dog's head did go sideways when he saw his master in so much makeup holding an elf in his arms, but hey, what happens in Hook City stays in Hook City. After a few minutes and looking about and asking what day it was from a few passersby, who of course laughed heartily, the pair of intrepid adventurers learned about two days had passed. Zeoll's head was pounding from the lack of food and the beatings the wall had given him, but he had his life and so too Valla.
..........
Alistair can tell you much about the place, as he has been here for quite some time. "It was thought to be an accident. The girls were found dead on the floor of the main dining room. Their bodies tangled up in the enormous chandelier that once adorned the place. Some think they somehow climbed onto the suspended wrought iron structure filled with glass baubles for illumination, when the supports broke, dashing them to the cold, stone floor. Yet, no one knows how they might have climbed up the twenty feet for this to happen."
"This is all that is known on the subject. The single widower, the last of his family now dead, moved away to never be seen again. Defeating them is somewhat easy, but it's keeping them away the following nights, that will prove difficult. Unless some form of communication can be established, it will take very powerful magic to forcible remove the duo."
Zeoll tries to remember what they could mean when they say, "You're right, Mary. Why haven't you done what you said you would do, Zeoll?" and "Yeah, answer Claire and me, why haven't you found our killer, the man who sold you this tower?"
He does not remember telling the girl spirits that he would do anything! Or does he?
Bosk AC: 20/11/18 CMD:20 HP 61 of 61 Spells Wednesday November 23rd, 2011 11:43:59 PM
Bosk shrugs his shoulders. I don't remember promising them anything, but I'm sure we have discussed their murder and looking for the killer while in the tower. Perhaps they were listening when we weren't aware. These are preadolescent girls we're talking about. I'm not sure that humans girls are the same as young minotaurs, but if they are I would expect them to be very emotional, read too much into comments they over hear, and to exaggerate and add to them as they replay them in their minds. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if they heard us talking about investigating the murder and took that as saying we would find the killer.
More importantly, they have given us a new lead...they said "why haven't you found our killer, the man who sold you this tower?" This is the first I remember anyone implicating the man selling the tower and directly saying he did it. I think we need to follow up on it. Besides, how can we call ourselves hero's if we let such injustice remain in our own tower.
Alexi AC 25 Tch 12 Ffted 22 HP 66/66 CMD 22 Wednesday November 23rd, 2011 11:49:42 PM

Just let us know whether Alexi and Zane are now legal or not. :)
Happy Thanksgiving y'all!

Beriothian listens to the group discussing things around the breakfast table. The man that sold us the tower? Now I see why Valla got it so cheap... aside from the spectral occupants that is. Unfortunately I don't know if I ever even met that guy, does anybody know if anyone besides Valla directly talked to him?

Having heard the full story of the girls for the first time, Kyan cannot help but shake his head and speaks up with his mouth half full of a bite of a breakfast and a sausage waving about on his fork, "This possession... seems like it was a bit more serious that I was led to be believe. Just having you put on some make up and sip some tea is one thing... but threatening to roast and eat you? That's a bit more than a prank."
OOC: Kyan has favored enemy in Race: Halfing and Class: Bard so his eventual goal should be pretty evident. =)

Restlin (Carl) -- AC: 14/12/12 CMD: 15 HP:43/43 (Spells) - Wand charges: 41 Thursday November 24th, 2011 11:16:46 PM
A soft whistle floats down the hall as Restlin returns from an early morning supply run. Pausing briefly to make a squinchy face at Kyan's deplorable table manners, the wizard places 5 vials and a wand on the table.
"Anti-toxin, potions of restoration, and another wand like Kyan's. Do we have an armory of any kind to keep these in? If not, let's let Bosk hang on to them. He's usually in the front line getting eaten anyway...why does everyone look so serious?"
Restlin sits and listens as he's filled in on the details.
"Well, I guess that was coming to head sooner or later." He looks to Zeoll. "Any chance we can just exorcise them and be done with it? There are ways to handle poltergeists. Surely he <points to Bosk> has some knowledge of sending departed souls to where they're supposed to be."

OOC: 1 wand of CLW, 2 potions of lesser restoration, 3 vials of anti-toxin.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
Shoddy Furniture -- DM Jim Friday November 25th, 2011 6:06:54 AM
Not shortly after Restlin suggests exorcism, than does one of the legs of his chair he is sitting in, breaks--sending him to the floor suddenly.
Zeoll (HP35 of 35, AC22, CMD17) d20+18=34 ; Friday November 25th, 2011 9:57:33 AM
Zeoll nods at Bosk's wise words, and scowls at Alexi and Restlin. "Come now, frriends! Have some compassion. These girrls are just kids, and it is not theirr fault that they arre trrapped in the Wold. And who among us would ignorre the pleas of murrderred childrren crrying out forr justice?"
Then Zeoll proceeds to talk about the tower, and its past occupants, and the murderer. But really, he is using his bluff skill to send a complex message to his friends. Zeoll has to make a DC20 Bluff check to do this, and his friends do not need to do anything to understand, if Zeoll makes the DC20 check. His Bluff with the Guidance spell is a +17, and he rolls a 33. [OOC: Sorry, put +18 instead of +17 when I rolled.]
Zeoll's hidden message is this: Lots of kids use bluff, bluster, and bravado to get their way. Kids can be cruel. So what? And these ghosts are confused. Maybe time passes oddly for them. But we know the right thing to do -- bring this murderer to justice. Who's in?
Bosk AC: 20/11/18 CMD:20 HP 61 of 61 Spells Friday November 25th, 2011 2:18:07 PM
Bosk does his best to hold back a slight laugh as Restlin's chair topples over, but then addresses the topic of exorcism in a most serious tone. The girls need not worry, I am not a fan of exorcisms and typically save them for spawned and evil-aligned undead who have been corrupted and now choose their unlife. Exorcisms are not my specialty. Grims find lost souls, and figure out what binds them, and then free them. I am what you might call a specialist in this area. A union of the will of the gods Gargul and Janacssis. I help those who cannot cross over due to some grievous wrong, some offense that gnaws at the person's soul like a cancer, preventing them from moving on until their vengeance has been carried out. It is nearly impossible to explain the hunger of the wronged for justice to be carried out, or the anger and guilt of the surviving soul, and the consuming hatred of those who still bleed. The gods have chosen me to maintain the balance of life and death, right and wrong, and justice and injustice that these souls may find peace.......even if this justice is a little "rough around the edges".
Given the amount of records and paperwork required in this city, it shouldn't be too hard to track down the man who sold us this tower. I suggest we spend the rest of the day researching everything we can track down on the man, but lets try not to be too obvious so that work doesn't get back to him that we are investigating the matter. If we hit a dead end I know of magic spell names Nemesis Insight that may be able to help us track him down. It is a little beyond my level, but I should be able to cast it if I get someone from the catacombs to scribe it to a scroll for me first.

Obviously Mr. Dimplewhimple neglected to use lost-soul proof materials in the construction of our furnishings. I could have sworn I warned him...
Anyway, as I was saying, we have two sweet, charming little girls who obviously need our help. I've lived in Hook City my whole life. Zeoll and I can start in the bureaucracy district. Between that gilded tongue of yours and my ability to sort through paperwork, we should be able to get a lead.

Title Company -- DM Jim Friday November 25th, 2011 7:27:09 PM
Restlin thinks about it a bit and remembers something he had heard before:
A deed is a legal document used to transfer ownership of land and property. Examining all of the deeds concerning your home or other property is a big step toward learning more about its history. In addition to providing the names of property owners, deeds can also provide information on construction dates, changes in value and use, and even plot maps. Begin with the deed for the current owners of the property and work your way back from one deed to the next, with each deed providing details on who conveyed the property to whom. This list of property owners in succession is known as the "chain of title." Though often a tedious process, a title search is the best method for establishing a chain of ownership for a property.
The title company that was used for Valla's and Zeoll's initial purchase is located on this side of town and is called Sargrass Equities.
Alexi AC 25 Tch 12 Ffted 22 HP 66/66 CMD 22 d20+1=14 ; d20+1=2 ; Friday November 25th, 2011 9:48:38 PM
"Don't look at me like that," Alexi blurts back at Zeol. "I've known kids to lie, I was just wondering if ghosts would. I don't know that much about ghosts."
Alexi listens to the others discuss the issue and then adds, "I agree with Bosk in that exorcism is not the answer. Justice served should suffice. I know so little of this but I volunteer to visit the gates and see if such person has left the city or is still registered as a citizen."
With the full name of the person who sold them the tower written on a note, Alexi heads to the closest city gate and asks if such person has left the city, calculating that his name would be entered in an Exit ledger just as names are written in an Entry ledger.
HIs reason for asking, if pressed, is "I owe him some money and the due date is nigh. I need to find him before he can start charging interest."

Alexi, I know you have yet to really meet the girls. We have no reason to distrust them, especially when we are giving them what they want. What interests me is mention of their mother, it sounds like she may not even realize she's dead.

Zeoll strongly thinks that splitting up the party is the wrong thing to do. "If we apprroach this Sarrgrrass Equities, forr example, and they take exception to us nosing arround, do we want to be at less than full strrength in a confrrontation?"
"Morreoverr, why arre we going into this situation blind? We need morre inforrmation firrst!"
Zeoll preps his spells for the day: lvl 0 - Innocence, Silent Image lvl 1 - Suggestion, Heroism, Deep Slumber, Jester's Jaunt; Comp Lang lvl 2 - Hold Person, Divination; Memory Lapse
[His bard spells are spontaneous and need no prep.]
He thinks hard about what he may have heard Valla mention about this Sargrass Equities, or what he may have heard on the street: Knowledge Local: a 17. Hmmm. He uses his Recall Memory Domain power to reroll that Knowledge check at +6. Knowledge Local: a 34, better!
Then Zeoll casts a Divination spell to see if he can gain some divine insight. He thinks about visiting the offices of Sargrass Equities to find out more about the person who is responsible for the deaths of the two little girls, Claire and Mary. His chance of success is 73%, and he rolls an 87. The spell fails, alas.
Finally, he suggests going out to gather some information before going there directly. Zeoll will take 1d4 hours in the morning (1d4 = 2) to ask discreetly around. Gather Info (Diplomacy) check is a 27.
THEN it will be time to go visit the offices.

Not having the liontaur's gilded tongue, Bosk will spend the morning shopping in the Catacombs and will rejoin the party when they visit the offices.
I agree with you that we should not go into this blind, and that we should collect as much information as discretely as we can, but I think that the odds of a confrontation here are minimal. If you remember, we were the first people to be placed in the detention center in over a hundred years, and that was for just spitting in someone's general direction. I would be more worried about a confrontation occurring outside the city walls. I am also afraid if we have too many people we might be drawing excessive attention to our selves and increasing the likely hood that it gets back to the murder.
At the very least, I think we need to make an effort to look as if we are not worried about a confrontation. Perhaps it would be best if trace the tower's history back much farther than the murder in order to obscure our purpose. If asked we could say we are looking into the tower's history for pride reasons. You know, other people are bragging of their places proud histories and that we want to be able to respond with something.
Alexi AC 25 Tch 12 Ffted 22 HP 66/66 CMD 22 Monday November 28th, 2011 12:36:25 PM
Alexi disagrees on spliting the group. "You have a good point, Zeoll if we expect a confrontation of force. However, being this a bureaocracy, you may incure a confrontation of wills by showing up in force. These people tend to see groups 'in numbers' as an afront to their authority and go on the defensive immediately. Going in two or three small groups means that if the first one fails, the second or third one may succeed if they play their hands right and time it right.
"On the other hand, we could all wait outside, inconspicous, just in case."
Alexi goes with Restlin and waits outside with Kyan for a name. If Restlin fails to get a name through bureocratic stubborness, then the two can go in about an hour later and try.
When they do have a name, he and Kyan will make a tour of the gates to see if their is a record of his departure.

Restlin scratches his head at all these words being thrown back and forth.
"Gentlemen, I expect we're making a big deal over nothing. This is a simple title search we're talking about here. There are a number of perfectly valid reasons for us to want to know the chain of ownership of home here in Hook City. I asked Zeoll to join me not because we need to fast talk our way into this place, but because sometimes bureaucracy needs a few nice words to move things along. If you all want to help me wade through paperwork, by all means come along. Attacking us within city limits, however, is absolutely suicidal. We're in far greater danger of drawing eyes to us than of being caught unaware.
"Unless I'm missing something...and that's possible...I see no reason to assume any blame or conspiracy lies with the title company."
Alexi AC 25 Tch 12 Ffted 22 HP 66/66 CMD 22 Monday November 28th, 2011 5:17:31 PM

Zane Stormfront AC 25 CMD 22 HP 48/50 Monday November 28th, 2011 5:51:45 PM "I don't believe they allow urchin inside the city boundaries. You'll only find them out here in Mudtown. If you aren't in need of me I suppose I will join Bosk in some shopping in the catacombs.
For what it's worth, I think you are just asking for our visit to be repeated by saying we are asking out of pride. Sargrass Equities -- DM Jim Tuesday November 29th, 2011 1:17:24 PM
Zeoll thinks about it a bit and just can't come up with anything in his memories about Sargrass Equities, so he gets serious about it and meditates momentarily and snippets of things he's heard and seen come to him easily. From what he can surmise, this Sargrass Equities is know to grease a few wheels to cut through a lot of the red tape that burdens the process, any process, of Hook City. To make sure he remembered correctly, the aged liontaur takes to the streets for a few hours to gather some information he may have missed on the business in question and basically confirms what he already knows.
With Zeoll's return the group in unison heads out to the title company. Along the way a beggar is seen in the streets asking for "alms for the poor" and "help a veteran out." Such an occurence is very rare here, in fact, unheard of along the wealthy streets of Hook City. When Bosk passes by the beggar, the wizen old man says, "He must be returned to the tower alive." When questioned, the man simply says "Squirrels are messengers from the gods, hehe." Any attempt to interrogate the beggar is cut off swiftly as the city street patrols cart the man off, asking him how he got into the city again and that he needs to return to Mudtown and stay there.
When Sargrass Equities is finally reached, the group--not all of them, head inside and first speak to the receptionist, who of course asks if they have an appointment. When it's indicated they do not, they are asked to wait, which doesn't happen to be very long. A tall thin man with an even thinner moustache comes out to greet them. He is the owner, a Mr. Kebi Vorkov, and from you initial reaction a rather disreputable looking person--somewhat akin to a used cart salesman. After you explain your needs, he excuses himself to go get the papers and asks you to wait momentarily. Minutes pass by. Five minutes pass by... Ever inquisitive, someone rises to go check out his office to politely inquire what is taking so long, but when the door is opened, they see that the room is empty. There is another door in the room and when the receptionist protests you barging into Mr. Vorkov's private office, and further says she's doesn't know where her boss is since the other door leads out into the alleyway, you all come to the inevitable conclusion that Mr. Vorkov has fled the scene.
Outside, Alexi and others mill about talking about this and that--perhaps the sighting of a beggar on the streets of Hook City. They see a tall thin gentleman walk out of a side alley carrying a rather expensive looking briefcase. He pauses a moment and heads in the opposite direction of Alexi and the others, further into the heart of the town. Minutes pass by as the group converses some more outside to pass the time--the faint static buzz of the weather control tower in the background is almost unheard except for those new to Hook City.
Zeoll (HP35 of 35, AC22, CMD17) d20+17=30 ; Tuesday November 29th, 2011 3:14:32 PM
Zeoll makes sure to communicate all he knows about Sargrass Equities to his friends.
On the way, the encounter with the begger leaves Zeoll's seer instincts buzzing! "A messengerr frrom the gods, maybe?" he speculates with his fellow Iron adventurers. "Telling us to brring the murrderrerr back to the towerr?"
At the offices, Zeoll is one of those who enters and greets Vorkov. When it is clear that the man is gone, Zeoll puts his grey head on the man's chair, breathes deeply, and then leads the group out the door.
"Come on, frriends! Maybe we can find this fellow! A liontaurr's nose is a hunterr's nose!"
Zeoll takes out his lens of perception, casts a Heroism spell, a Taur's Try (centaur) spell, and sets off after Vorkov, tracking him by eye and nose.

When the group exits the building through the alley isntead of the main entrance, Alexi is keenly aware that something has gone wrong.
"Don't tell me you've managed to irritate the clerks and insult them to the point we are on the run," he whispers as he rushes to join them.

Restlin doesn't like being wrong.
"This doesn't make any sense," Restlin ponders as he follows the liontaur's nose. "If he wanted to throw us off he could easily bury us in Hook City paperwork or just falsify records. Now we know he's up to something."

Kyan waits outside with Alexi, making small talk mainly about any passing women of interest. He figures Alexi, as a former soldier and not one of the stuffy Hook City natives, might at least appreciate such things. While they wait, he keeps an eye out for anything unusual, but isn't necessarily expecting it.
When the others emerge from the alley, Kyan frowns and, upon hearing what happens, does his best to point in the direction the man went. (Perception 28 to notice shifty tall man leaving)
And he moves off with the rest, Azrael as his heels, keeping his eyes out for the man in question. (Perception 21 to spot the man again if possible)

Having far more experience in covering his own tracks than detecting those left by others Beri takes the momentary disruption to glance around the office for any clues regarding the tower or the location that the man has fled to. Once the others are out the door Beri attempts to work some magic on the receptionist. I'm sorry for the excitement we caused, I have no idea why your boss fled like that. I'm sure that to be trusted in a position in such an important office you would have a very deep understanding of the city's record keeping, I don't suppose you would know where else we could find the details we are looking for? Would the previous owner be listed on a tax form or an official appraisal record maybe? I'd be much obliged if there was anything you could think of.

Highlight to display spoiler: {Beri has a watch that grants +1 on his next seduction attempt that I'd like to use (it becomes mundane at the end of the year). I can't find anything in the book about seduction in the book, so I wasn't sure if it would stack with diplomacy.}

Bosk joins the others outside and starts going over a mental list of what needs to be done for his latest crafting project and soon finds himself oblivious to the comings and goings of the world about him. It isn't until Zeoll begins to sniff out the fleeing man that the idea of tracking down the shady paper pusher occurs to him. Immediately he does what he can to assist Zeoll, but for the most part he finds the liontaur's nose knows best.

Vorkov -- DM Jim Wednesday November 30th, 2011 12:33:51 PM
It's not hard to follow the scent of the smarmy businessman--his cologne is a heady musk akin to two savage halflings in rut fighting for the leftovers of a pineapple upside down cake.
"If you wanted a date, all you had to do is ask, handsome," was the exceptionally unattractive receptionists reply to Beri's query. But as he was about to continue his line of inquiry, he notices out the front window that the group is moving at a quickened pace down the road.
Zeoll follows the scent trail like a bloodhound; passing one alleyway and doubling back, then another. The group eventually winds up at a private residence down a narrow corridor filled with other residences. As the liontaur confirms the area is where the scent ends, a muffled cry can be heard coming from said residence--the name plaque on the door says, "De Rais".
Alexi, the Mailed Fist have no presence here in the South Continent.

Bosk, Zane, Alexi you want to help me cover the exits while the other guys knock on the door? He quickly casts a cantrip. "We should all be able to talk to each other covertly except for Restlin and Kyan. Restlin, can you cover that?"
He moves off to the rear of the residence, trying to remain hidden from the view of the windows and tries to keep an eye out for anything unusual. De Rais .... De Rais.... it sounds so familiar, haven't I heard that name before?

Restlin bravely knocks on the door three times and soon hears the clacking of shoes on tile, or perhaps flagstone, quickly approaching. The small barred port in the door opens and a woman, dressed like a maid, asks, "Yes, how may I help you?" Restlin can see behind her a small courtyard with a circular waterfountain in it's center and a well manicured garden about it. Estimating it's size to be about 40' x 40', Restlin sees that the main house starts beyond it and more than likely takes up the space of the other house on the otherside of this block--which had no door to it. Alleyway -- DM Jim Tuesday December 6th, 2011 12:04:19 PM
The alleyway you're currently in is about 10' wide--making it difficult to pass by those Taurs that are in it. Normal traffic through one of these are pretty light, usually only the owners of the homes in this area travel through here, so a large number of strangers, such as yourselves, are unusual. Although not exactly the same, when I envision the alleyway, I think of it something like THIS.

Whispering to try to keep the conversation quiet, Beltrin proposes an alternate plan. "Well in that case, I can get myself over the wall while invisible and unlatch the door. I'll scout around inside and see what's going on and alert you all if there's anything amiss."
If no one objects, Beltrin speaks some mystical words and vanishes from sight. Another incantation comes from the vacant space where Beltrin once stood and then he is heard from no more for a little while.... ----------------- Beltrin casts Invisibility and Fly on himself and floats over the wall. He'll examine the grounds briefly and if he doesn't see anything, he'll head inside the house. He tries to be mindful of the duration of his spells (5 minutes) and get back to his companions by the time that they appear.

Bigger than it looks -- DM Jim Tuesday December 6th, 2011 7:03:02 PM
Beltrin casts his spells with a strong voice (FYI, you cannot whisper or cast spells in a subdued voice unless using metamagic) and takes off invisibily over the 30' high wall and into the well manicured 40' x 40' courtyard of Mr. De Rais. The first thing the wizard notices is that the house proper is bigger than it looked from the outside. On each side, other than the front door, there are arched walkways and doors into other parts of Mr. De Rais' home. The home looks to take up the same size as six homes in this area would occupy. The main foyer is directly ahead of Beltrin, just opposite the front door. It's glass-paned double doors are closed, but the wizard can see inside that the furnishings are opulent with many silks and objet d'art tastefully placed about the interior--he see's no one inside, but does see a winding staircase leading to the second level.
Try to break in quietly, or head back?

Just thought you might like to know... also, don't spit on judges here. They don't appreciate it.
Beltrin (Keith) AC: 18/15/18 HP: 56/56 CMD: 20 Spells Tuesday December 6th, 2011 8:31:41 PM
Beltrin takes advantage of his temporary flight to cruise past the upstairs windows to see if he can see anything interesting up there. If he doesn't see anything of interest, he'll risk the front door, opening it slowly as if it was blown by a gust of wind and then closing it behind if he enters unobserved. He'll examine the upstairs first and exit through an unobserved window if possible.
The whole time he alternately thinks to himself.... What are you doing!?! You're a semi-respectable land-owner in Hook City now, you could lose it all! and In a few weeks I've gained a lot by taking risks, keep your head and you'll come out just fine
------------------------------------
Was Beltrin able to unlock/unbar the door in the wall so that his friends could come to his rescue if necessary?
B&E -- DM Jim Tuesday December 6th, 2011 9:32:48 PM
Before looking upstairs from the outside, Beltrin heads back to the front door and unbolts the three seperate locks--apparently two are only accessible from the inside. Then the wizard flies back and up to spy through some of the upper level windows. What he first see's is a large open room that the winding staircase empties out into. In that luxuriously appointed room he see's a man unknown to him--but more than likely De Rais from his manner of dress and comfortable sitting position in an ornately crafted chair. At the strangers feet is Vorkov, on his side, crying.
A blazing fire roars in the background--which is very odd since the weather requires no such source of heat at this time of day. As the Iron Adventurers enter the courtyard, the man in the chair turns to look out the window. There is no way he can see anyone coming through his front door or in his courtyard, and in fact he isn't, his eyes are solidly locked on Beltrin floating in midair--the man cocks an eyebrow and purses his lips, thinking of his upcoming reaction.

Bosk AC: 20/11/18 CMD:21 HP 55 of 55 Spells Wednesday December 7th, 2011 12:53:47 PM
Bosk is somewhat relieved when Beltrin call out to them. While it may be next to impossible to scare the cleric in battle, the waiting and anxiety were driving him crazy. The constant urge to cast a spell held off by the fear that the noise will give away their location. Wanting to ask Beltrin a question, but not wanting to alert others to his presence. He could swear people across the street could hear his heart beating in his chest, thank god the waiting was over.
He tries his best to think of what the scream could have been. Did Vorkov attack De Rais, or is De Rais punishing Vorkov, or is yet another person involved? Well, I suppose this is De Rais place and Vorkov was running from us. Our best chance of avoiding legal action is to act like we are concerned for his welfare, we are a protection group after all.
As Beltrin heads back towards the group the Cleric calls to him. "Well? Is everyone all right in there? Who screamed? Is De Rais ok?"

Bosk AC: 20/11/18 CMD:21 HP 55 of 55 Spells Wednesday December 7th, 2011 9:38:05 PM
It takes Bosk a second to realize the full meaning of Kyan's nod. Although he is trying to avoid trouble, he also believes that De Rais was the most likely person to have called out in distress, any of the other scenario he could come up with seemed less less likely to be accurate. He begins to say something about actually believing what he said, but then decides to let the ranger think he did some quick thinking to come up with a plan.
For the moment Bosk holds his position, not wishing to aggravate the situation. He figures the telling the truth is the group best bet. They were following a man, heard a cry of distress, and were investigating it. De Rais is clearly the most likely victim at this point.
ooc: Remember that Bosk still doesn't know Vorkov was curled up on the floor crying while De Rais watched from a comfy chair. Vorkov attacking De Rais seems like the most likely situation to the taur. The next most likely was that Vorkov was warning De Rais, but then the cry of distress doesn't make a ton of sense (at least not without knowing that it was Vorkov who screamed). Vorkov being punished seemed the least likely of the scenario to the taur.

OOC to DM: Is there a glass pane or panes in the window? If someone looks out the window, will such a pane, if it is there, block spellcasting? If so, Zeoll will not cast a spell he knows will not work.
OOC: Will Save DC 20. The medium range spell covers a 20-ft.-radius spread, so Zeoll is hoping it will affect even those within the window who he cannot see.

"Oh, thanks a lot, Berothian. Now you tell me!" he whispers.

Everyone pretty much stays where they are, at the front door. Beltrin and Zane are at the back of the group, with the latter trying very hard to squeeze into a tight corner and look like a rain spout. Alexi is the only one that sprints forward across the courtyard--which has many different varieties of roses, but he does not stop to smell them. He waits cautiously by the side of the double glass-paned doors for the first person to exit; he does not have to wait for long. Both doors open inward and two very well dressed children step out. Alexi springs to the attack and sweeps the leg of the closest child, sending him face first, screaming, into the flagstone.
Shocked at the sudden attack, the other child--a male about 8 years old it would seem, dressed in an ornately embroidered navy blue jacket with ruffled shirt, high collars, and matching leg wear, draws two daggers from behind his back and lunges to the attack on Alexi as he draws his sword. The childs dagger plunges into Alexi's leg as he was righting himself and burns with toxic poison.
Alexi, please make a Fort DC14 save or lose 2pts of Strength.
You also take 3hp damage
Five more children rush out the door and set up a defensive line. All are dressed as equally well as the prior two children and in fact two of the five that just exited the house are girls in very beautiful dresses. The three new male children all pull out daggers from behind their backs; one female child in a beautiful yellow dress pulls out two whips from under her dress and the other girl, who is wearing a stunning red dress, pulls out a light mace from under hers and wields it in both hands. All the human looking children seem to be anywhere from eight to ten years of age.
At the double doors appears a very well dressed man, the same one sitting in the chair upstairs as seen by Beltrin. His light blue gold thread embroidered jacket is made of the finest silk; In his right hand he has a cane with a silver tiger's grip and in his left a fine lace handkerchief which he pats his lips with. "Well, well, what do we have here? Common thieves trying to rob me? Be off with you, Mudtown scum, before I teach you a lesson in manners."

He makes no threatening actions, but reaches a hand down to pet the back of Azrael's head to be in a position to quickly order the cat to act if needed.
Otherwise, he offers Restlin a grin, "Can't have that. Do you have any water? If this goes south, I'd hate to end up before a judge with a dry mouth."

Snubbed by the brat boy Alexi retreaves his hand, perplexed that the youngster would refuse a helping hand to get up. More perplexed at the girl's use of her whips. At least until Zeoll drops his concentration on the spell that held Aexi at bay.
Of course, Alexi had no intention of attacking kids anyway, but their sudden exit did not give him any time to retract his leg before the brat accidentally tripped over it.
Alexi bows slightly to De Rais, "Sorry to have disturbed your party, Sir," and backs away from the man towards Bosk and ending up right in front of Bosk. "What kinda winnie hides behind a bunch of kids," he asks Bosk out the side of his mouth and under his breath.

De Rais grimaces as he fights off Zeoll's suggestion spell, even as Alexi retreats, and the rest attempt to stop any impending fight. Obviously angered by the second use of a spell against him, De Rais says vehemently, "Do you think you can break into my home and leave unscathed?! You may all leave except for the liontaur--Kill him my children!" The children are quick to the attack, but just as they move into position, a Stinking Cloud spell erupts in their midst. From behind Bosk, squeezed up against him, Beltrin has unleashed the spell targeted directly on De Rais himself--unfortunately it also covered Zeoll.
Zeoll, Fort DC18 save to avoid becoming Nauseated
In response to the spell, both little girls and three of the five boys become nauseated and can do nothing but double over in anguish. De Rais, who is unaffected, casts a Dispel Magic on the Stinking Cloud, but he fails miserably to unweave the spell and it persists. One of the boys unaffected (#1) takes up a defensive position and another also unaffected (#4) stabs at Zeoll with one of his daggers and bloodies the bard whatchamacallit's leg.
Zeoll, you take 3pts of damage.
Please make a Fort DC14 save against Poison to avoid a loss of 1 Strength

Restlin squeezes past Alexi in an obviously foul mood. "We just wanted some paperwork!" he screaches just before casing grease at the horde of attacking children (affects Q14-R15).
OOC: The roll was a knowledge local to figure out how screwed they were with the law, but with moving and casting a spell, I doubt Restlin has time to figure anything out.

Grease info:
A grease spell covers a solid surface with a layer of slippery grease. Any creature in the area when the spell is cast must make a successful Reflex save or fall. A creature can walk within or through the area of grease at half normal speed with a DC 10 Acrobatics check. Failure means it can't move that round (and must then make a Reflex save or fall), while failure by 5 or more means it falls (see the Acrobatics skill for details). Creatures that do not move on their turn do not need to make this check and are not considered flat-footed.

Bosk yells to Restlin, He knows Celestial. Tell him to get Vorkov and bring him to us. With no further explanation the cleric says a quick prayer and a Dire Celestial Bat (Large Sized) appears 55ft up and North, as close to the window as possible. The cleric hopes the large creature will have an easier time carrying the man and draw any attacks away from Restlin.

Zeoll uses his natural divination to get a +6 on his save. He also adds +2 for heroism. That's +8 to his base +4, or +12 total. He rolls a 24, and escapes the stinking cloud's effect. However, if he stays in it, he'll be sorry!
Zeoll takes a five foot step back to 17-18-S. He casts Silent Image to cause a curved stone wall to spring up, exactly following the edge of the stinking cloud, so that if it were a real wall, it would not allow anyone within the cloud to escape on this side. If anyone interacts with the wall (touches it?), the Will Save to understand it is an illusion is a DC16.
Zeoll whispers to his friends via Message spell and bluff check to send a hidden message that the stone wall is an illusion and can be walked through. Bluff 34.
Zeoll has a second or two left, and he ponders who it is he is fighting. What race? What features? What weaknesses? [OOC: This is preparatory to Zeoll using his Naturalist ability as an archivist bard: "An archivist who has identified a creature with a Knowledge check appropriate to its type can use performance to share strategies for defeating it with allies in combat."]
Raw unmodified Knowledge check is a 12. For Know nobility, that's a 17. For everything else, it's at least a 21. For some checks, it runs as high as 25 for Know nature, 23 for Know Arcana. Is that high enough to use the naturalist ability next round? Thanks!

But, these kids may have True Seeing rings? (a la Order of the Stick) :)
IC: Alexi has never seen children act in this manner and is suspicious of their true nature. "Children of such age that can fight this well against experienced adults? When did they start, the minute they popped out of the womb?" Alexi blurts.
He wants to study them but a cloud of noxious fumes errupts around them, then a wall. "Er, so much for that," he says to no one and digs into his pack, retrieves a potion and drinks it.

Unsure as to the clear letter of the law here, he wasn't looking to put an arrow in one of the kids, but De Rais is another story. If that fellow presents himself as a target outside of the cloud and the illusionary wall he'll send an arrow his way for any further hostile actions.

Retreat! -- DM Jim d20+4=18 ; d20+4=12 ; d4=2 ; d20+7=27 ; Wednesday December 14th, 2011 1:38:13 PM
Yelling out that the group only wanted some paperwork, Restlin moves past Alexi and casts a grease spell on an area occupied by the children.
Bosk yells over to Restlin to instruct something to get Vorkov and bring him to the group, then the large minotaur begins summoning a monster from the dark recesses of another plane.
Via the group Message spell, Zeoll lets the others know that the solid wall he is putting up is an illusion and not to be fooled by it. He casts the spell and the wall takes shape.
Zane moves forward slightly and with his extended reach, tries to strike one of the children through the illusionary wall, but fails to hit his target.
No longer invisible, Beltrin flies at break-neck speed and expertly crashes through the upper level window in which he spied DeRais and Vorkov minutes ago. Yelling out for Vorkov, he finds himself alone in the large 40' x 40' well furnished room.
Beltrin takes 2pts of damage flying through the window
There are several windows in the room, all are closed except for the one you busted out. The only exit seems to be the winding staircase to the lower level that is blocked by a Stinking Cloud.
Commenting on the nature of the children, Alexi downs an anti-toxin potion in case of future attacks.
Ordering his lynx to stay by his side, Kyan draws his bow and waits for the opportunity to pin-cushion De Rais if he comes out of the Stinking Cloud.
Stating that they're not here to cause trouble and will gladly waiting for the city guard, Beri pulls out a unique device and orders it to sing--which is does!
Restlin, Alexi and Bosk's second action do not occur this round. The Dire bat doesn't show up until the end of the round after the bad guys turn, so Restlin can't say anything to the bat.
"To me my children, inside now!" De Rais commands. Those children on the edge of Stinking Cloud move further into the cloud toward their masters voice and the group loses sight up them.
Near the upper level window that was broken by Beltrin, a very furry, squeeky Dire Bat appears out of nothingness.

Perception +5 to notice anyone withing seeing distance in the cloud: 8 Fort +14 for passing through the Stinking Cloud: 27
Alexi wonders what he'll do but his main goal is not to stop them but observe where they go, but if he overtakes anyone (any affected creature gets only one Move action) he decides he'll tell them: Stay put and stay out of the way and you, De Rais, and your friends will not suffer harm.
Intimidate +10 for above bolded statement: 24
OOC: So Double Move: to the door and beyond until seeing the fleeing children and De Rais or until prevented by an oponent blocking the way; Defend Self if still have a Standard Action left Free action: tell nauseated ones he comes by the above bold statement.
I hope all that was clear. :}
DM Jim: a few things-- movement is hampered through poor visibility areas, so each 5' square counts as 2 squares. Most Perception checks are reactive, made in response to observable stimulus. Intentionally searching for stimulus is a move action; so if you're actively searching in the cloud, then it's a move action. If you happen to run into something, then it's not. In this case I think you're actively searching--correct me if I'm wrong.
Alexi AC 25 Tch 12 Ffted 22 HP 63/66 CMD 22 Wednesday December 14th, 2011 11:12:01 PM
OOC: I just wanted to be clear that if something was in his path he'd not just barrel past it and cause an AOO. So he's not actively searching. But his double move would be at 2 sq. while in the cloud. So that would be 40' (8sq.) It looks like it would put him where '1' is on the De Rais2 map.
Next round I'll roll the save again.

Decisions, decisions -- DM Jim Thursday December 15th, 2011 12:58:02 PM
As most the group discusses what to do, Zane starts climbing the West (left) wall, but just can't get a good hand and foot hold to make any progress.
Need a DC25 for the lower level and DC21 for the upper level
Restlin gives his Dire Bat instructions to retrieve Vorkov, but the bat says he only see's Beltrin (after he describes him).
Beltrin on the other hand is calling out for Vorkov after pulling out a net. His cursory search of the room yields no secret doors, or Vorkov--but it is unusually warm in the room due to the logs burning in the fireplace.
Moving into the Stinking Cloud, Alexi successfully holds his breath, squints his eyes enough and with help of the anti-toxin avoid the effects of said cloud. Moving slowly once in the cloud, for fear of tripping over something, the fighter see's no one in sight, but does hear the shuffle of many feet coming from inside the house.
De Rais calls to his minions, "Further children, out of the cloud, this way."

OOC: Q. for the Grease spell on Q14/R15, Kidds 3,4,5,6,7 would have had to roll saves. We wouldn't have seen the effects, but if one or more fell, at least once, they would have lost at least one round of Move. Right?
Just asking because if they did loose a round or two, and some are only getting 1 Move, Alexi should be getting very close to one.
That's his reasoning and what he's looking for, passively, at least. :)
Alexi AC 25 Tch 12 Ffted 22 HP 63/66 CMD 22 Thursday December 15th, 2011 9:07:17 PM
OOC: forgot to mention, and glad Bosk mentioned it, Alexi also has Blind Fight so it would seem he does not suffer the Move penalty to move through the cloud.
Is that right?
Since I didn't think of it before, I'm assuming Alexi slowed down when entering the cloud as he held his breath and waited to see if he'd throw up or not before continuing through.
Zeoll (HP32 of 35, AC22, CMD17) d20+18=27 ; Thursday December 15th, 2011 11:08:38 PM
Zeoll decide that with the enemy in retreat and the stinking cloud obscuring vision, there is no need for the illusion of the wall. He stops concentrating, and the wall fades away.
So this round he uses his Bardic Archivist Naturalist ability to give his friends some help in battle against this foe. [OOC: Knowledge Nature check already rolled on Dec 11 was a 27]
Anyone who can see and hear Zeoll within 30 ft gains a +1 to attacks, AC, and Saves!
Zeoll whispers his plan indirectly to his friends. The Stinking Cloud will dissipate soon. I will create an illusion of a cloud next round directly over it so that when it dissipates, it will look like it is still there. We, entering it, will be able to see through it because we know it is an illusion. The enemy, looking in, will not be able to see us. Bluff check for a complex hidden message: 27.
OOC: Jim, are there any other windows at all? Alleys on either side of the house? What's in this courtyard? plants? Anything else? ALSO, how many rounds left in the Cloud?
DM Jim: small windows upstairs, about 4 on each side. One alley on the right side, about 60' down from the door. Plants and water fountain. Dead bodies buried under the flowers. Ask the guy who cast the spell :)

Hold on there-- DM Jim Saturday December 17th, 2011 9:00:16 PM Bosk follows closely behind Alxei as they run through the Stinking Cloud, but narrowly miss well coordinated furnishings that cover this opulent parlor.
Beri and Restlin's dire bat floow after Bosk into the Stinkiong Cloud
Both make DC18 Fort saves or become nauseated
Zane tries to give it a go and just can't seem to get up that wall.
Dropping his illusionary wall, Zeoll yells out some tactical information and takes a careful look around.
Thinking something suspicious with the fire, Beltrinconfirms his thoughts and finds that one of the pokers near the fire radiates magic.
As both Alexi and Bosk near the far edge of the Stinking Cloud, they can see the outlines of the children receding into a room behind the winding stairs.
Bosk needs to make two Dc14 fort saves or become nauseated. Alexi needs only one more if he exits the cloud (5') this round.

As he begins to smell the putrid vapors he starts coughing and covers his mouth with his scarf (Enchanted with a permanent clean cantrip) hoping to breathe a little easier. Despite his coughing he keeps moving forward as fast as he is able, although his pace is slowed by his constant coughing. (Bosk only use a move action this round due to nausea)

Zeoll (HP32 of 35, AC22, CMD17) Monday December 19th, 2011 9:32:49 AM
Zeoll ponders. By my count, this is the last round of the cloud. So I'll cast an illusion of the cloud directly superimposed over the actual cloud. When the spell ends, the illusion will replace it. We can walk through it and use its total concealment for free as we peek through easily, maybe getting the jump on the enemy. If some scent lingers, it will reinforce the illusion. If no scent lingers, I'll be able to track by scent."
Zeoll gets out his lens to help him track once the cloud is gone. He maintains his bardic performance (2nd round) to continue giving his friends their bonuses. Then he takes a five foot step forward (not into the cloud) and casts Silent Image of the cloud over the cloud.

----------------------------- On the 3rd round of Detect Magic (next round) Beltrin should be able to analyze the aura, here are Knowledge (Arcana) and Spellcraft checks for the poker:
Side out -- DM Jim Monday December 19th, 2011 7:37:34 PM Restlin decides not to chance the Stinking Cloud and it's vomitous effects and instead casts Detect Magic and begins scanning the area around him. He immediately see's the Stinking Cloud is magical and that's about it out here in the courtyard.
Joining Restlin's side, Kyan also stands watch, keeping a wary eye for anything out of the usual.
Deciding to guard the courtyard along with the others, Zane pulls a shrub out of the ground and stands behind it in the corner.
Bosk due to immediately succumbing to the effects of the Stinking Cloud, finds himself still within it, just a few feet away from it's edge and from Alexi.
Please make one more DC18 Fort save before exiting the cloud next round
Zeoll surmises that the Stinking Cloud will fade almost immediately, but is he right? He takes the chance and casts a Silent Image of the same cloud overlayed on it. Since none of those in the cloud or beyond the cloud can see, yet can hear the bard's inspiring words, they do not benefit from them.
Following Bosk, Beri reaches his side, but they're still in the cloud. He's never seen a minotaur puke until now and hopes it's the last time he ever does.
Please make one more DC18 fort save before exiting the cloud.
His curiosity getting the better of him, Beltrin goes to the magic poker and picks it up. As he notes that it's not a poker, but a branding iron--a small circle with a corrupted high woldian glyph in it's center, Beltrin feels a searing pain shoot up his arm and stab at his heart, it's all he can do to not cry out in pain like a little girl.
Beltrin, you have -1 character level while you hold the brand.

--------------------------------- That accursed Stinking Cloud should dissipate after Beltrin's turn.
DM Jim: Let me know if Beltrin still has the negative level if he's not holding the poker, but has it stowed away. Either way, he'll hold onto it for the moment.
Yucky -- DM Jim Wednesday December 21st, 2011 11:34:45 AM Beri and Bosk make their way through the Stinking Cloud--the former faring much better than the latter who is now emptying the last remains of his stomach on the floor to mingle with the vomit of the small children that made their way through this same area. Both see Alexi hunkered at a side door beside the winding stair, listening carefully.
Hearing the spellcasting sound as if it were receding, Alexi thinks maybe this is the door to a basement.
Upstairs, Beltrin hangs onto the cursed brand, putting it in his backpack--the pain remains and slowly worsens.
Outside in the courtyard several are keeping an eye out for the city guard, but they usually take their time to respond to anything--when seconds count, the city guard are minutes away.
After several moments, the Stinking Cloud looks like it's still there--or maybe it's just Zeoll's Silent Image. The sound of De Rais and the children can no longer be heard.

Down into darkness -- DM Jim Tuesday December 27th, 2011 1:14:47 PM
With the marching order set, Alexi leads the way down the winding steps. The staircase is cold and damp, as is usual, and the Taurs in the group soon find their pelts matted and covered with lichen and other gross growths that are hard to make out in the dim light.
Those with sharp ears hear another door locking tight far below--perhaps another 50'. At this depth, the sewers of Hook City should be near, but no smell of their presence can be discerned. A few mintues later the group stop at an iron bound door. It's metal reinforcements rusted due to the humidity. With Beri unable to move past Bosk to check the lock, there is no way to pick it and only one person, Alexi has access to it. The scuffle of feet can be heard beyond the doorway.

As he casts his spell(s) the cleric tries to determine if anything stands out in the wardrobe. Are the items for healing or torture, and if they could have a magical or ritualistic or religious meaning to them. Using what little he has learned as an avenger he also tries to determine if any of the items could be used in crafting the poison the children were using. If anything looks useful for stitching up a comrade or crafting / curing poison the cleric will take it, worried what might be awaiting them on the other side.
If the group is unsuccessful in finding a passage and no one objects Bosk will try to rip the wardrobe from the wall / floor. If unsuccessful he will then attempt to break through the back and floor.

Throughly checking the armoire, there is one serrated knife that doesn't want to be remove from the pegged backwall. Twisting it however, releases a latch that causes the armoire to slightly spring toward Beri, unsealing it from the stone wall. The Sewers -- DM Jim Tuesday January 3rd, 2012 11:56:34 AM
After some contemplation, the group trudges into the depths of the sewer in pursuit of De Rais--if in fact he is De Rais. The smell is horrible; bits of this and that in the wastewater cling to the fur of the Taurs--it'll take magic, lots of it, to get the smell out.
Soon the group comes to an intersection that opens into a large 50'x50' room; a huge deluge of wastewater pours out from a tunnel high above into the center of this room. There are three other tunnels that lead out of this room. All the water from the tunnels are heading into this room, so the water must be escaping somewhere in the middle of the room, as the level of the water is fairly constant. The ledge around this room has widened to accomodate a medium sized person, so the Taurs could squeeze onto the ledge if they wanted too. Also, the pull of the water is strong here at the opening of the current tunnel.

Comes the scream from above the opening of the tunnel as the seven children, all having climbed up the rough walls and lying in wait, descend rapidly on their prey--weapons poised to strike the hearts of the Iron Adventurers.
Kyan, with your perception roll and readied action, you get one free shot on one of the kids before they attack you.
Beltrin feels the sting of a dagger's blade in his shoulder and the burning of poison trying to weaken him. Take 4hp damage and must make a DC14 Fort save vs poison or take 2pts of Strength loss. Attacked by #2
Kyan also feels the pain of a venom-laced dagger cutting across his ribs. take 4hp damage and must make the same save as Beltrin or lose 2 pts of Strength. Attacked by #3
Beri is also struck by a dual daggerwielding child, who's eyes glare with intense anger. Take 6hp damage and make above save or lose 1pt of Strength. Attacked by #4
Restlin finds a quarterstaff trying to knock a few of his teeth out, then a flash of light that quickly accompanies it. Take 4hp damage and make a Will save DC15 or be under the effects of a SLOW spell.Attacked by #7

Restlin winces as the girl connects with her staff. He feels the magic working on his muscles, but remembers his training and wills it away (Will save 16. Save the will saves for the warriors next time, little girl).

Sleep:
A sleep spell causes a magical slumber to come upon 4 HD of creatures. Creatures with the fewest HD are affected first. Among creatures with equal HD, those who are closest to the spell's point of origin are affected first. HD that are not sufficient to affect a creature are wasted. Sleeping creatures are helpless. Slapping or wounding awakens an affected creature, but normal noise does not. Awakening a creature is a standard action (an application of the aid another action). Sleep does not target unconscious creatures, constructs, or undead creatures.
Will save is DC15

Firing as they fall, Kyan's arrow does little more than fly upward into darkness, piercing some unseen area above. His blades are also ineffective as he counterattacks the little foe in front of him as Restlin puts to sleep the quarterstaff wielding little girl squaring off against him.
It isn't until Alexi strikes that any of the children are actually struck in combat--and a critical strike it is! Even though he is weakened by poison, the warrior stabs the boy in front of him right through his chest. The small boy lets out a groan and manages to say before he dies, "For my master."

What the heck? -- DM Jim Friday January 6th, 2012 12:50:43 PM
The sound of multiple explosions would normally make a person head in the opposite direction, but not this centaur. Yondrim waded through the filth, his head still hurting from a possible kidnapping attempt gone awry, which also left him down here in the sewers trying to find his way out. When he exited the tunnel he was in, he found the source of the explosions--and it was ghastly. Flesh and bone was splattered upon the walls of the sewer like crazy--somewhat akin to a psychopathic giant who loved fingerpainting with gore. Yondrim wasn't sure if they were good or evil, but he did spy a large minotaur cleric of Gargul and they were not usually evil--and healing was happening and that's something evil people usually didn't do for the nearly dead.
As bits and chunks of flesh float away, so too does Kyan's body. It has succumbed to the vortex in the middle of the room that is sucking away all the debris in the water, and the water itself (Kyan can play in another campaign using the cheat death rule--the tunnels will carry him away). Any attempt to save him at this point would be lethal.
Barely hanging onto life, the rest of the Iron Adventurers slowly begin to stabilize everyone that fell to the carnage. Zeoll, on the edge of consciousness, brushes aside one of the children's ear that is stuck to the side of his face. It's pointy tip tells him something, but he's far to much in pain to make the connection and flicks it aside.

He spits some goo that got wedged in his mouth towards the vortex. "What kind of vile thing would brainwash children to sacrifice themselves so, and what kind of magic causes such self-destruction? I've seen undead explode upon death, and an Ice Demon blast sharp chards of ice, but living, breathing, humanoids? I'll need to research this."
