Throughly checking the armoire, there is one serrated knife that doesn't want to be remove from the pegged backwall. Twisting it however, releases a latch that causes the armoire to slightly spring toward Beri, unsealing it from the stone wall. Opening it carefully, the group can see that it opens into a working sewer tunnel. The river of wastewater runs right and left and there is a small ledge on either side to avoid the waste.

Medium characters can squeeze to avoid the sewer water, larger creatures cannot.

"Blast it." Restlin fumes. "Always a catacomb, or a jail cell, or a dirt tunnel. Is it asking too much for a bad-guy to have a tastefully decorated escape tunnel?"

Restlin falls in line while casting a quick prestidigitation spell to take care of any future cleaning.

"I don't know what you're complaining about, you can mostly keep to the small ledges to move in there. Some of us are gonna have to trudge through that crap." Zane says bluntly as he looks through the opening.
He spots the blood that Restlin pointed out.
"Shhh.....
he says, then a few moments later, "They went that a way, I heard some small sounds of movement. Maybe one of those kids stepping in a small puddle of water." Zane indicates the direction as to the right, where he heard the noise.

Taking a clue from Restlin, he also casts Prestidigitation. Restlin may want to clean up, Zane is going to need to clean up before this is over.

The liontaur bard takes a look around: nat 20! HE confirms what Zane has said.

Zeoll says, speaking softly, "Hold on a second, everryone! They have abandoned the house. They arre clearrly up to no good. But we have no idea if these people arre the ones we seek -- the killerrs of the girrls and theirr family. Since they have abandoned the house to us, maybe we can seal the exit door and spend some time looking thrrough this entirre house, top to bottom, to figure out what the heck is going on herre. As opposed to blindly rrushing into an ambush, I'm thinking."

"If the house has been abandoned it will be here when we get back. I'd rather not lose De Rais while we have his trail. Even if he doesn't have anything to do with the girls in the tower, he's obviously up to something and now knows that we're on to him." Kyan adds in, taking the rear position once again with Azrael. He makes no effort to squeeze onto the pathway and occasionally sloshes in to the sewer muck with his boots.

Just look at the cells and the blood scattered all over. He knows we have discovered at least this much, if we let him run loose, we risk him going further into the shadows where we may not be able to find him again. Even in my weakened condition, I recommend we continue the chase, rather than give him time to vanish."[/b]

This is the most any of the group has heard the minotaur say at one time, and while he was talking, he reached up and drew his hood back, allowing those in the group to see the feelings behind his words....

Alexi belts out a laugh that echoes down the sewer tunnel.

"You gonna smell 'em in here?" he slaps Zeol on the shoulder. "Good luck!"

Alexi takes the lead and tries to stay 'dry' but before he heads further down he turns and says, "You do realize the only one we really are after is that guy that ran from the records office, right? He's the one that knows about the house, right? All this DeRais stuff is just for fun right?"

He turns and starts down the direction Zane pointed.

Beriothian looks at the bloody sewers. An uncomfortable feeling washes over him as nightmares of animated skeletons creep into his memory. He pushes these thoughts out of his head as he listens to the group talk.

They almost certainly took the guy we are looking for with them. They wouldn't want to leave any witnesses, and from the looks of it this is where they take... well, I don't really know who they take down here, but they are in pretty poor shape at that point. Let's try to hurry, but keep an eye out for traps.

The Sewers -- DM Jim

After some contemplation, the group trudges into the depths of the sewer in pursuit of De Rais--if in fact he is De Rais. The smell is horrible; bits of this and that in the wastewater cling to the fur of the Taurs--it'll take magic, lots of it, to get the smell out.

Soon the group comes to an intersection that opens into a large 50'x50' room; a huge deluge of wastewater pours out from a tunnel high above into the center of this room. There are three other tunnels that lead out of this room. All the water from the tunnels are heading into this room, so the water must be escaping somewhere in the middle of the room, as the level of the water is fairly constant. The ledge around this room has widened to accomodate a medium sized person, so the Taurs could squeeze onto the ledge if they wanted too. Also, the pull of the water is strong here at the opening of the current tunnel.

Zane, upon reaching the conflagration room, for a better lack of a term, stops near the edge and listens for any sound other than that of the falling water, anything out of place will draw his attention. They couldn't have gained too much on the group, but with the kids, and only the one or two larger people, they would move quicker than the group doing the pursuing group with the larger taurs in it.
With the cantrip he cast earlier, he'll try and add a fresh mowed alfalfa scent to the air around him, trying to mask a bit of the smell. (cast Prestidigitation earlier will recast as it fades, unless in combat)

Kyan lets out a grunt of disgust, though whether it's at the sewer smell or the attempts of his companions to cover it up is hard to say. However, once in the large room the ranger puts in sword away and takes out his bow before scanning the room to look for some sign of De Rais or any other danger with an arrow set ready to fly.

Bosk pulls himself up onto the ledge the best he can and wipes himself off with his enchanted scarf (permanent clean cantrip) . I think we should split up and each check one of the tunnels to see if there are wet foot prints or hand prints indicating they used on of the other tunnels. If not, we might all be going for a swim. As he prepares to move forward he glances up and checks for enemies or possibly another tunnel.

OOC: DM, am I correct in that, to circle around this room and stay dry you'd have to jump across the water flow when crossing the tunnels? That is, how wide are these sewer rivers. Need to know the width in case I want to jump from one side of a tunnel to the other without getting my boots wet.

Alexi looks for the tell-tale whirlpool that should exist if sewer water is, in fact, going down, even if slowly. Such as 'debri' circling around the midle of the room, etc.

Comes the scream from above the opening of the tunnel as the seven children, all having climbed up the rough walls and lying in wait, descend rapidly on their prey--weapons poised to strike the hearts of the Iron Adventurers.

Kyan, with your perception roll and readied action, you get one free shot on one of the kids before they attack you.

Beltrin feels the sting of a dagger's blade in his shoulder and the burning of poison trying to weaken him.
Take 4hp damage and must make a DC14 Fort save vs poison or take 2pts of Strength loss. Attacked by #2

Kyan also feels the pain of a venom-laced dagger cutting across his ribs.

Restlin winces as the girl connects with her staff. He feels the magic working on his muscles, but remembers his training and wills it away (Will save 16. Save the will saves for the warriors next time, little girl).

"You kids are all up WAY PAST YOUR BED TIME," the wizard roars before casting a sleep spell on the immediate area, being careful to avoid any more swings from the kids (defensive casting - 34...I need a 2, but hey, I'll take a natural 20).

The ranger reacts by instinct at the first yell and his bow his raised and aimed at a decending figure in an instant and he lets an arrow fly.

He lets out a curse as realizes it's the children and lets his bow drop to the sewer floor with a clatter. His arm raises to draw his sword, but he stops himself and lashes out with fists instead, aiming to render his attacker unconscious as he feels the poison start to sap his strength.

Azrael lets out a snarl and launches himself against child 1.

ooc: Can I get some more information on the depth of the water, if we can tell, to decide if it is worth staying on the ledge and taking the -4 penalty to AC and atk rolls for squeezing, or do you consider it only a loss of a dex bonus as listed under acrobatics for crossing a ledge?

Bosk waits until the sleep spell takes hold and then throws the the closest boy still awake into the sewer, if all the boys are asleep he will throw one of the girls in. Glaring at Beri he says, How can you ask me to kill them and then choose your sap over your sword? Still, these guys could use a bath.

CMB check to throw child into the sewer = 25
(21 if Bosk has a -4 penalty for squeezing, but my understanding is that it only applies to cramped spaces and not ledges.)

Zane hears the kids attack,"Foolish children, you avoided me. Your mistake." He turns towards one of the brats and not really caring that they are kids, he knows evil comes in all forms, he unleashes a flurry onto one of them.
He channels some energy into his limbs, (activate Arcane strike) and then he strikes out with a hand chop, and follows it up with a snap kick to the brats head.

Zeoll puts away his magic lens, not wanting to drop it into the nasty water.

Firing as they fall, Kyan's arrow does little more than fly upward into darkness, piercing some unseen area above. His blades are also ineffective as he counterattacks the little foe in front of him as Restlin puts to sleep the quarterstaff wielding little girl squaring off against him.

It isn't until Alexi strikes that any of the children are actually struck in combat--and a critical strike it is! Even though he is weakened by poison, the warrior stabs the boy in front of him right through his chest. The small boy lets out a groan and manages to say before he dies, "For my master."

BOOM!

In a spray of blood, guts, sinew and bones, the entire area is covered in gore as Alexi's foe explodes in a miasma of flesh and green corrosive carnage.

Each child detonates as they succumb to their mates accursed affliction, showering everyone numerous times in a horrific soup of acidic flesh and bones.

As the explosions clear, the Monk is still standing and surprisingly, he has no bits-o-kids on him, they all seemed to miss him. (thank you Evasion)
He looks around to see who has been less lucky than himself. He'll start at the nearest and begin pulling them towards the ledge, to get them to some type of safety so they don't drown in sewage.

ooc: Does (+4 due to all the water getting kicked up in the area) mean we get a +4 bonus to our save. Either way Bosk made all his saves and is clinging to life with -10 HP, but I will have used a few Hero Points if not. Also, since Bosk is squeezed on a ledge Acrobatics requires a save after each hit or he falls off the ledge. Since the blasts are in succession and not at once, would falling into the water keep Bosk from taking some additional damage.

As the darkness closes in around him the Horned Cleric prays to Gargul for the group's souls, but out of the corner of his consciousness he sees his shadow and a shiver runs down his spine. He hadn't seen his shadow since it was nailed in the throne room of Gargul, truly this was an ominous sign. But how can he carry out gods will and achieve the destiny he foretold if he were to die? Silently he hopes the shadow was a figment of his imagination, but already he thinks he can hear his master calling...

What the...
The rogue starts jumping and dodging. Bloody water flies through the air as he bobs and weaves away from the shrapnel. When all the children are gone Beri looks over his bloody body in terror. It takes him a moment to realize the the blood and half a spleen sliding down his torso don't actually belong to him. Thanks to his quick reflexes the rogue finds he is completely unscathed.

The rogue quickly thrusts his wand of CLW into Bosk's hand and tells him to make good use of it.
(Bosk doesn't run the risk I have of use magic device failing)

The sound of multiple explosions would normally make a person head in the opposite direction, but not this centaur. Yondrim waded through the filth, his head still hurting from a possible kidnapping attempt gone awry, which also left him down here in the sewers trying to find his way out. When he exited the tunnel he was in, he found the source of the explosions--and it was ghastly. Flesh and bone was splattered upon the walls of the sewer like crazy--somewhat akin to a psychopathic giant who loved fingerpainting with gore. Yondrim wasn't sure if they were good or evil, but he did spy a large minotaur cleric of Gargul and they were not usually evil--and healing was happening and that's something evil people usually didn't do for the nearly dead.

As bits and chunks of flesh float away, so too does Kyan's body. It has succumbed to the vortex in the middle of the room that is sucking away all the debris in the water, and the water itself (Kyan can play in another campaign using the cheat death rule--the tunnels will carry him away). Any attempt to save him at this point would be lethal.

Barely hanging onto life, the rest of the Iron Adventurers slowly begin to stabilize everyone that fell to the carnage. Zeoll, on the edge of consciousness, brushes aside one of the children's ear that is stuck to the side of his face. It's pointy tip tells him something, but he's far to much in pain to make the connection and flicks it aside.

Everyone gets half their level in Hero Points (rounded down) and 1403xp's.

Alexi's sense return quickly as he hears others talking. Watching the bits of friend and foe swirl down the sewer pipe he numble says, "Burial at sewer, what a way to go."

He spits some goo that got wedged in his mouth towards the vortex. "What kind of vile thing would brainwash children to sacrifice themselves so, and what kind of magic causes such self-destruction? I've seen undead explode upon death, and an Ice Demon blast sharp chards of ice, but living, breathing, humanoids? I'll need to research this."

Hearing some sloshing coming their way, he quickly fetches a potion of CLW from his mucked up backpack. Trying not to gulp anything more than the healing potion, he downs it.

Zeoll groans as he is brought back to consciousness. (Has someone brought Zeoll back to consciousness?)

Zeoll speculates that the "children" were some kind of diseased halflings in disguise. Maybe undead with make-up on.
