Co-DM Jonathan - time to reel 'em in... Sunday December 4th, 2011 10:29:44 PM
A sailor returns with a couple of meat hooks and the dingy gets lowered to just above the water surface. Fortunately the seas are mild and the sailor in the dingy receives the meat hooks and waits for the fish to get close. The third sailor stays ready to bring the little boat up.
Harvest Moon seems to have gotten the hang of fishing. Patient and determined she has the fish quite near the boat now.
Crag's fish switches direction and throws the dwarf off a bit and he looses much of what he originally gained. Brom reaches over to help but Crag manages to prevent that and keep himself in the competition. The dwarf manages to gain some of the line back.
Brom's not too happy at Crag and doesn't care if the dwarf looses money, he just wants a good fish gumbo.
Crag's not too happy at Brom for trying to interfere.
Barratore continues bringing his fish in as well. It'll be close to see who gets it in the boat first, he or Harvest.
Gerox and Peza are both sure they are glad it's not them down there with the fishing and keep an eye out for shadows in the water that might indicate what has been caught.
DM OOC: I made a list of some open ocean game fish but to keep it short i've got A, B, C, D, E, F. To make things interesting, Harvest, Crag, and Barratore need to roll a d6. a 1= A, 2 = C, etc. The mystery fish will then be determined, heh.
Brom is not very keen on his friends' ribbing and reels his hook in and goes asking for a harpoon and kitchen leftovers to attract more fish, the line thing just not catching on with him.
OOC: with another good DC10 STR check from the three and the d6, we'll know what's the 'catch of the day'.
Sorry for the delay. I think my PC is normal now.

It is understandable that a fish would not wish to be eaten. But such is the way of things that some things must eat others in order to live. Such is the way it has been explained to Harvest Moon, and from her experience it has proven very much true. One must always fight for one's right to live. It is the way of things.
More than the desperate pulling of the fish, it is more difficult to fight the desire to look up to the crows nest where Peza calls down her words of encouragement. One look away, though, might provide this fish with its chance to escape.
"I will bring this fish for dinner, Peza!" calls Harvest Moon without lifting her eyes from the rope, without pausing in the task of moving down the rope and then drawing it back foot by foot by foot.

Gerox climbs down from the crows nest and rushes over to the rail. He hops and hops and finally grabs a bucket to stand on so he can see into the water. "I can smell the chowder already! Come on and pull them in! I want to see what kind of fish it is. It might be better in steak form."
Co-DM Jonathan - time to reel 'em in... Tuesday December 6th, 2011 12:36:33 PM Crag regains his advantage over his catch. The fish fights back hard and to the surprise of all, it leaps out of the water jerking violently trying to dislodge the hook.
It is long, slim, with a thin fin on it's back. On its snout protrudes a long apendage that ends in a very sharp point.
The fish splashes back into the water and Crag continues his fight.
Harvest Moon's fish breaks the surface near the dingy. It is weird looking, like some mongrel fish. It is flat and instead of having one eye on each side of its flat body both eyes are on one side, the top side.
The sailor quickly snags it with a meat hook and with Harvest's help they get it into the dingy. The dingy sways violently as the huge fish flops around. The sailor hangs onto the dingy rope for dear life as the fish nearly fills the boat. The small boat is immediately hauled up.
Barratore also experiences the exhiliration of seeing his catch breach. It flings itself high and behaves much like Crag's. It looks very similar to the dwarf's too, but its dorsal fin runs the length of its back and looks much like a sail.
It splashes back into the water with a great boom. It looks like he's got a good fighter on his hands.
The excitement gets the best of Gerox and he leaves the crow's nest to watch the fight close up.
Lemick reels his line in and joins the other sailors to watch the excitement.
Brom seeks out a sailor who knows some woodcraft. This is a wooden ship so that's not hard to find. The sailor says he can drill a hole in his javelin as the barbarian asks, but it still won't have a barbed point like a harpoon. Better than nothing, though.
Sailors scuttle to the dingy and haul the several hundred pound fish onto the deck, its flopping body a hazzard.
Cheers of excitement errupt every time Crag or Barratore's fish breach. The battle though seems to be going to the adventurers.

Co-DM Jonathan - fish fry party! Wednesday December 7th, 2011 11:22:19 PM Harvest is amazed at her fish and not the least undaunted by its oddness, having no idea what kind it is. She braves the flapping thing and bonks it on its head, which diminishes its flapping but its mouth slowly opening and closing for a 'breath' indicates its quick demise now that it's out of the water.
Barratore pulls his fish in. The dingy now lowered once more repeats the process of bringing it up. Harvest's fish is shoved asside to give room for the second flapping fish. This one slashes out with it's long pointy protrusion.
Crag Continues to bring his in and when the dingy is ready again, his fish is also brought up.
Artus confirms the catch: A halibut, a sailfish, and a swordfish. The cook makes an appearance and smiles widely, ear to ear. "Now ye get to clean them," he laughs. But he does not trust the adventurers' skill in cleaning fish so he sets a few sailors to the task.
"Good job, my friends," Artus exclaims. "Good thing this doesn't happen everyday, though." Then he yells to the rest of the crew to get back to work.

It is important to know how to prepare the meat of animals. If done incorrectly, the meat can be ruined. It can be a matter of survival.
Harvest Moon squats nearby as the sailors work upon the fish. The technique with which they use their blades to open and cut at the flesh of the fish is important. So too is it to note the parts of the fish that the sailors discard and where within each fish these things are located.
After the fish preparations are complete, Harvest Moon retrieves her book of maps from within its waterproof sack. With the book she climbs the mast to the crowsnest. While taking the watch for danger, she studies the map of Yrth that she had copied at the inn in Southport. Upon it are marked the locations of the Huaydo wemics and the town of Chessford. Surely they could not have come so far as to have passed the western shores of Yrth. That looks very far in comparison to the distance from Southport to Chessford. And, if they have not passed the western coast of Yrth ...
Harvest Moon looks in the direction that she knows from intuition must be the north. There would lie the land.

Before each fish is cut up, it is measured and weighed. Gerox had volunteered to be the judge of the contest and stands watch over the procedures, not that anyone would try anything devious.
The halibut measured 7ft 5in and weighed 600lb. The Sailfish measured 8ft 1in and weighed 135lb. The swordfish measured 12ft 5in and weighed 800lb.
OOC: I got these from wickipedia and rolled some random numbers according to each fish max size and weight.
Gerox studies them and makes a decision on the winner. To the winner goes a scrimshaw piece f moderate quality showing the Sea Sprite in the ocean with seabirds flitting about.
The prize also included a pair of shoes crafted by Peza and Gerox had offered 5gps for the biggest edible fish by weight and 5gps for the most edible fish. Since each one only caught one, it's up to Gerox to decide what he wants to do about the last one.
The night festivities go by with music from various instruments like harmonicas and a hand-zided accordion and lots of dancing. The two sharp bills from the sailfish and swordfish are presented to Crag and Barratore respectively as trophies.
The next day, Peza happens to be in the crow's nest when she spots a thin trail of smoke on the horizon.

The thought is brief as the warrior is far more rooted in the now.
After trying each, Barratore decides that the swordfish is the most to his liking, though the others are tasty enough.
"Well fought all, he pats Crag and Harvest." with such a successful fishing expedition, Barratore sees no need to conserve and eats his fill of fish. Then it is off to a spot on the stern where he can stretch out a bit and drift off to sleep.

The party is lively and everone enjoys the fish. Much is still left over, only portions of them were cooked, and the remainder of the fish were prepared for sun-drying.
The next day, when Peza points out some smoke on the horizon, the deck is lined with salted fish filets hanging on ropes.
Artus makes his way to the prow to get a better view. He returns and directs the pilot to steer the ship in the direction of the smoke. Smoke on the open ocean isn't a good thing. "Where there's smoke, there's wood to burn. It's worth looking into," he tells the crew.
The sailors hop to it and get the Seasprite's sails adjusted and the ship is quickly pointed in the right direction.

From the crow's nest, the thin smoke trail looks just that, even after the Seasprite gains dozens of nautical miles towards it.
Harvest Moon finally is able to make out that it is not a ship. It may have been a ship but right now it is a floating wooden raft of sorts with the smoke seeming to come from the middle of it. There are some specks on it but it is hard to tell at that distance what those specks are.

Once the lookouts realize the size of the floating wooden platform, roughly 20x20, the Seasprite seems to approach much quicker.
Artus orders the sails to be trimmed and the Seasprite begins to slow down. All hands are curious and anxious to find out who may be on the raft. Due to the slow swells, the raft bobs up and down gracefully, being hidden for a time before it rises on the next swell.
As the Seasprite closes, Crag arms himself and explains to Harvest why someone might want to burn his raft. Seth confirms the dwarf's assesment. "Perhaps they saw us first, being our mast way up hight, and then lit their fire. Otherwise, how would we know they were there? A tiny speck in this huge ocean?"
Barratore seems unconcearned with the caution the others are taking.
Lemick has the idea that whatever caused the ship to break up might pose a threat to the Seasprite and goes to the railing looking for underwater rocks.

"I think this is wrong!" Harvest Moon calls down. "Navigator Artus Morindim, I think that we should go faster! The raft, I think, is not a raft."
"We should go down, Peza. Now." Harvst Moon's voice is filled with alarm. "I do not like the feeling of this," she adds before scrambling down the ropes to the deck below.

The Sea Sprite closes within half a mile, and the crew cranes their necks, wondering what's up.
Harvest Moon perceives something odd about the figures sitting on raft and conveys her fears to the others while scrambling down from the crow's nest.
Gerox tries to get a better view by starting up the ratlines to the crow's nest.
Peza agrees with Harvest's assessment and suggests the Sea Sprite keep it's distance until they can observe the scene further.
Crag casts a Blessing on everyone. One can't be too cautious!
Barratore is confused by Harvest's excited exclamations.
Lemick Notices that the sea color is slightly different and points this out to a nearby sailor. The sailor shouts out to Artus that the depth has changed and is shallower.
Right about then Peza sees a grey fin breach the surface near the raft and start circling it. A second fin breaches the surface opposite the first and starts circling also. The two fins circle the raft in the same direction.
The crew voices their concern at the new developments and Artus gets a team to ready the dingy for a rescue attempt.
The Sea Sprite then suddenly lurches and pulls hard to portside throwing everybody off.
OOC: Peza and Gerox need to roll Dex check DC15 or risk tumbling down (Peza from the crow's nest and Gerox from halfway up)
Everone else needs Dex check DC15 to remain standing, else be prone.
IC: The helmsan shouts curses as he fights the helm to no avail! Artus starts shouting orders to try to keep the sails with wind as the Sea Sprite starts on it's journey of a wide circle.

OOC: sorry, but i could not keep from chuckling with Crag's post. :)
Harvest seems to have accessed the situation as a lure into more shallow waters. She does an exotic hulla dance to keep her feet.
Crag promptly kisses the deck. His senses tell him that they didn't actually 'hit' anything but something has taken contol of the ship, somehow, and caused the Sea Sprite to make a hard left.
Brom's hulla dance is not quite at par with Harvest's and he lands on his but. His observations are that the Sea Sprite seems to have begun a wide circle to the left.
Barratore keeps his feet with panache. His observations are similar to Brom's
Peza barely keeps her grip on the crow's nest rigging. Good thing she doesn't have vertigo.
OOC: don't have Lemicks and Gerox's but moving on. Shouldn't affect anything much.
Artus and the pilot fight for control of the ship but something seems to have locked the rudder making the Sea Sprite go in a leftward circle. Not knowing if the shallow waters will reveal a reef and with no control over the steering of the Sea Sprite, Artus orders all sails to be put up in order to bring the ship to a halt.
The crew quickly gets to work on bringing the sails in and by the time the Sea Sprite has completed a full circle the anchor is dropped and the ship comes to a full stop a mere 50 yards from the floating raft.
The shark fins are gone and it is evident that the figures sitting no the raft are dummies. The fire on the raft sits on a flat stone slab so not to burn the raft and with no additional fuel is only putting out a thin whisper of smoke.
Then suddenly from the water comes an aquatic figure and clambers upon the raft.
A hoars voice, one not used to be used above water, calls out to the Sea Sprite in a heavily accented Common.
"You, Ship! Humans! You surrender or else die! You surrender, let us plunder ship you live! You say?"
He cups his hands and dips them in the water letting some trickle out.

I've seen pictures of Crow's Nest where it looks much like a 'bucket' with the mast going up the middle, other pictures show a platform with a rail to hang onto but no 'walls' like a bucket kind has. The third kind is just a platform, that's it, the only thing to hang onto is the mast itself.

Round 3
Brom gathers himself and makes his way to the railing to get a look at the aquatic figure, his javelin ready to toss, but holds his fire.
At this distance, the adventurers can make out that the creature is reptilian-like with fins along the arms and back. Sharp teeth line its jaws and it holds a trident.
Anyone wanting to roll a Knowledge (Aquatic creatures) may do so.
Harvest Moon calls to the creature calling it a thief and looks out for others that may be, or probably are, present. She notices some vague forms swiming below the surface but is it one of the same or sharks? There may be at least half a dozen, but it is hard to tell.
Crag is offended at being considered 'human' and casts Enlarge on Barratore. Always answer Yes if asked if you are a god, unless being asked BY a god, eh? The dwarf warns Artus the possibility of them putting a hole in the ship.
Peza hunkers down on the crow's nest, the flat platform bottom the only true cover, but considering her hight up the mast, any attack from below except area spell would have a hard time getting to her.
Barratore now enlarged, posses an impressive sight. Looking out, he sees at least one vague shape swim under the ship. Did it go out the other side or is that one coming out the same one or a different one? He's ready to attack no matter how many there are.
Gerox, from part way up the ratlines towards the crow's nest, looses his grip when the ship lurches and comes tumbling down to the deck. please roll your Acrobatics DC15 to ignore the 1st 10ft.
Lemick continues to keep an eye out and prepared for combat.
Artus makes his way to the front of the ship and angrily shouts out to the creature, "We'll not give up our mops and buckets for the likes of YOU! You'll have to come and fight for it!"
The lizard-type aquatic creature sneers and hisses then replies, "FOOLS! You all die! You make good eating at feast tonight!" then dives into the water.

OOC: to answer Harvest, from the picture (see link from Dec 17, Sea Sprite), it looks like there is something like 5' at lowest point. The picture says the centerboard is 13' deep, so by eyeing the span from the waterline to the railing at it's lowest point in the center of the ship, i'll guess it at 5' feet. That seems shallow so I'm open to your eyeballing it and making a quess.
Meanwhile I'll wait for Lemick and Brom's post, as combat is emminent. If they get one in tonight I'll get one in late, otherwise I'll post in the morning.
I know that at this time things get hecktic with shopping and family arriving so if you know you'll be pressed to post, pop something to that effect so we know what's up. Co-DM Jonathan - the demands to surrender. (no one wants to parley?) Tuesday December 20th, 2011 10:33:42 PM
OOC: ah, I googled 'draft of boat' and found this: In specifications for boats, when the term "draft" is used, it refers to the vertical distance from the water to the lowest part of the vessel.
The picture says the draft is 8ft and the centerboard is 13ft. So the amount of hull under water (8ft) minus the total depth (13ft) = 5!
Cool, huh?

Round 4
The adventurers take up defensive positions when 'negotiations' go sour with Artus and the aquatic bandito.
Crag points out the high chance the aquatic bantitos may just opt to sink the ship instead of boarding it.
Artus replies to the dwarf's question, "Looks like we'll have to dive to get a look at the rudder before we can get her moving again, I'm afraid."
Artus sends the cook down below to the bilge and to give a warning if he sees a water spout.
Artus yells up to Peza asking if she sees any signs of rocks or reefs nearby. (DM OOC: using a previous Perception roll) Peza informs him she does not see any obvious signs of a reef or rocks.
Artus then orders the sailors in the rigging to lower the sails again. "Even if we can only go in circles, it is better than staying put," he tells Crag. Artus knows the the draft is much shallower than the heavier war vessels and is gambling on missing any underwater rocks, if there are any.
Gerox manages flop unceremoniously to the deck and joins Harvest at the rear of the ship to help repel boarders going for the tiller.
Peza asks Artus about what weapons he has at his disposal. Unfortunately they don't have any nets. The fish hooks would work if nothing else, but the sailors have daggers and Artus is well equiped.
They were two potions of Cure Light Wounds.
Barratore Stands firmly at the bow leaving little room for anyone else in his enlarged form. The ship dips slightly. (just kidding!) Not far away is Lemick also watching the waters. OOC: I've adjusted BRTR and got is as close to a 3x3 I can. :}
Brom takes up a position midship to give him freedom to move to whichever sides needs it most.
Crag also takes up a position midship and Peza remains crouched in the crow's nest ready to ping anything trying to board.
Seconds tick by after the aquatic creature dived into the water, but only mere seconds passed before eruptions from the water surround the ship.
From the stern (back side) on both port (left) and starboard (right) an aquatic creature pulls himself up out of the water enough to toss a net. The same occurs midship on both sides and also at the starboard bow (front).
Congruent with the net attacks, an aquatic creature climbs the ship on the stern portside and starboard bow.

Peza has her crossbow loaded and can fire, choose any side to fire at. Barratore has a 15' reach and can choose either side to swing his sword as the creature climbs over the railing.
Harvest Moon (AC17/T17/F14; HP10/10; CMD 18) - Al Thursday December 22nd, 2011 4:03:07 AM
OoC: Climbing requires two hands to accomplish. Can we consider these sea creatures to be unarmed until they attain deck and draw their weapons?
Also, Climbing is at one quarter speed. That means that climbing the five feet onto the deck should take up twenty feet of virtual movement. Would that not give Barattore an AoO vs one of his opponents at the bow for moving through threatened space?

From Harvest: OoC: Climbing requires two hands to accomplish. Can we consider these sea creatures to be unarmed until they attain deck and draw their weapons?
DM: correct. They have a trident strapped to their backs and those that have not thrown their nets have a net wrapped around an arm (requiring 'draw weapon' action).
Also, Climbing is at one quarter speed. That means that climbing the five feet onto the deck should take up twenty feet of virtual movement. Would that not give Barattore an AoO vs one of his opponents at the bow for moving through threatened space?
DM: correct. Their move is 30', moving at 1/4 speed it would take 40' of move to climb the (roughly) 10' of hull at the stern and bow and then hop over the railing, thus taking up their full move. Barratore gets at least one AoO (or more depending on feats etc.) as they climb over the railing.
I didn't give Artus an AoO because he was busy giving orders to the sailors in the rigging and he'd have to take a 5' step. But he's ready for bear now. :)
Help any?
P.S. dang, I see the confusion. I wrote OOC: round!
Sorry, I meant AoO: round. DOH!

End Round 4 (posted so far): Gerox suggests to Harvest that they concentrate on the same enemy and sends a ball of fire at Sh7 (OOC: I'm assuming the 19 is your Range Touch Attatck) hitting it in the face (only part above water right now) for 5hp damage.
In anger, Sh7 starts climbing the hull (Climb: 9) but falls back into the water as the pain of the fire momentarily overwhelms it.
Harvest doesn't want to waste any time (OOC: DM's guess) and quickly moves to I10 delivering a punch worth 3hp damage to Sh4
Barratore's flashing steel finally connects with flesh and the momentum of the anger at having missed three swings in a row plow the blade clean through, splitting skull down to scaly chest of Sh6.
Crag: please note that Sl1 is a sailor! :) The Red Sh's are the enemy. Sh8 is still in the water. Please change your action, I think the sailor will appreciate your axe better aimed at the enemy instead of him.
Options: The enemy still in the water may or may not try to climb aboard. A held action will give you first attack as they climb up, and probably an AoO when they go over the railing to the deck. Example: See Barratore's actions.
Waiting for Brom and Lemick and I believe Peza gets to Load (Move Action) and Fire (Standard) her crossbow again this round. Peza's view of the battle shows many targets but several of them would be shooting into melee, which may or may not be a problem for her. Targets in the water offer a better choice as they are not adjacent to anyone yet. Your choice.

End Round 4 pt 2: Crag moves to the railing to repel boarders so Sailor 1 can help Sailor 2 get untangled. He's ready to chop down on anything coming up the sides.
Brom flings his javelin at the nearest opponent (Sh2). The fish-like humanoid is in melee with Lemick making the enemy harder to hit without endangering his friend. The javeling sails wide.
DM OOC: Since Richard can't see the picture I'm going to have him move next to Sailor 3. I think Brom would see that Barratore has things well in hand at the bow and no one to help Sailor 3. If this seems wrong, let me know.
Brom then moves to Sailor 3's aid.
Peza quickly reloads her crossbow and pings the fish-like humanoid again for 8hp damage!
Sailor 4 makes a 5' step to J10 and tries to cut his way out with his dagger, Hit AC4, but apparently his weapon arm is caught in the net.
Sailor 3 does the same as Sailor 4, taking a 5' step to Q10, Hit AC17, dmg 3pt to net. Net is damaged but he's still entangled.

Round 5 (their move): Oblivious of Sh6's demise, the fish-humanoids press on:
Sh4 sneers are Harvest, it's sharp teeth looking very sharp. Although having a trident strapped to his back, he lashes out with two claw attacks and snaps at her. Sh4 hit AC16, 23, 10, one claw hitting doing 4hp damage.
Sh3 gives a good yank on the net's trailing rope. *Grapple Check, CMB +14 vs CMD +12 = 16 vs 13 Sh3 uses his weight and with a mighty yank pulls Sailor 4 over the railing! A yell is followed by a loud Splash.
Sh5 tries to do the same to Sailor 3. *Grapple Check, CMB +14 vs CMD +12 = 22 vs 30. The mighty pull from the enemy is foiled by the sailor as he manages to reach a hand out from the cut he made in the net and grab hold of a rigging pin near the railing.
Sh2 pulls his trident out as he steps 5' to Z12 and jabs the three points at Barratore and snaps at him. Sh2 hit AC20, 19, hitting with both trident and a good bite for 4 + 3= 7hp damage.
Hearing combat on deck above him, Sh1 makes his way up the hull (Climb 18) to help his partner.
Sh8 realizes he's lost his net as the tension goes slack. Unwilling to climb and face who-knows-how-many alone, he pushes away from the hull and swims 30' feet away from the ship while bringing his crossbow to around. He takes a pot-shot at Sailor 2. Sh8 hit AC22 doing 5hp damage, possible crit: confirm 9/no.
Sh7 tries to climb up the hull once more (Climb 6) but his eyesight has been damaged (temporarily at least) and falls back into the water.
Sh9 suddenly appears on deck right behind the tiller! No one had seen him due to the angle of the stern and the yawl boat!
Alas, only one more enemy left to go, the fish-humanoidy thing that had challenged the Sea Sprite rears his ugly head and takes a shot at Peza. ShL1 (range and cover penalty) hit AC16 (-2, -4)=10. Does Peza notice the crossbow bolt zinging by?

End Round 5: Harvest frantically calls out Man Overboard before getting a punch in where it hurts on fishlike-man Sh4. He's bruised but still has a lot of fight in him.
Peza issues a warning to Barratore of more coming up to the deck near him then sees the pilot in danger and takes a quick shot at the new arrival, but her aim is too rushed and she misses. Her good eyes spot the source of the crossbow bolt, though.
Brom, unable to reach sh5 directly, wisely severs the lead rope to the net entangling sailor 3.
DM OOC: The creatures that threw the nets did so from the water, the distance from the surface to the deck only 5' to 10', the range of a thrown net.
Barratore ignores the enemy right before him and reaches over it to strike the newcomer. His mighty swing lops off its head which bounces a few times and rolls to a stop at Crag's feet.
Gerox DM OOC: it would be easier just tell me the coordinates, if you can. As is, moving 10' from the railing puts you where the tiller is or Sh9. I think Gerox is wise enough not to bonk his head on the tiller, or run into Sh9, so I'll move him to J12, next to the pilot, so he can cast his ball of fire and not incure an AoO and be far enough away from the railing from Sh7.
Gerox scoots over next to the pilot so he can peek under the tiller and toss a fireball at Sh4 threatning Harvest. Despite his target being in melee with the monk, his aim is true and Sh4 gets burned for 2hps dmg.
Crag sees that the stern is in more danger than the prow and moves as quick as he can that direction.
Sailor 4, being entangled in the net, hits the water and goes under.
Sailor 3, now free from having to fight the pull on the already damaged net, manages to finish scrambling out of it and be totally free.
Sailor 2 moves over to Lemick's side to help get him untangled. Between the two they managed to cut the net and free Lemick.
Sailor 1 crouches down, weary of the fishman in the water with the crossbow, but watching in case it tries to board the ship again.
Artus contiues making his way to the stern.
The Pilot, seeing that fighting the tiller is futile decides to help out Harvest by watching her back (not literally), and instead of heading Peza's call attacks Sh9 with a dagger, hit AC3 missing horribly but at least keeping the monk from being flanked.
The sails now unfurled and being tied down, they catch what breeze they can and the Sea Sprite moves forward a foot or two.
The enemy still feels like they have the upper hand, at the stern at least, and continue to fight.
Sh4, still with his claws, tries to give some payback on Harvest, Hit AC9, 7, 9. Apparently, Gerox is an expert at targeting the eyes as Sh4's two claw attacks and bite attack miss horribly.
Sh3 tries climbing aboard, Climb 14 and makes it over the rail. However this gives Harvest an AoO against it.
Sh5, having lost his net, decides not to confront steel head on and pulls back 20' to take a shot at Brom with his crossbow. Hit AC8. The bolt is blocked by the railing!
At the prow, Sh2 finds himself alone with a huge minotaur who's already gruesomely dispatched two of his comrades. However, he has drawn blood and feels the honor he will receive from his clan for killing this huge minotaur far more valuable than his life. He strikes out with his trident and teeth again. Hit AC13, 6. If he was wearing boots, he migjht be shaking in them now. :(
Sh8 looks for targets while he loads his crossbow.
Sh7 sees head vanish and makes a gamble, hoping that the fight on the other end has drawn the defenders away. He tries climbing up once more, Climb 14, this time succeeding.
Sh9 draws his trident to fend of the pilot's dagger and jabs its three prongs at him and bites. Hit AC17, 3, dmg 11. The pilot takes the three prongs in the chest like a man, not that he really wanted that, but manages to dodge the bite.
ShL1 is determined to knock out the sniper in the crow's nest and reloads his crossbow.

A quick look over the rail shows Harvest Moon the head of the sailor as it sinks beneath the surface. He must be rescued soon or he will drown. But he cannot be rescued while these Shark Men are here.
"YOU! GO AWAY!" shouts Harvest Moon at Shark Men, who's numbers appear to be growing rather than shrinking.
She makes a swift kick to the hip of the Shark Man climbing on the boat before delivering a solid kick to the groin of the one who had previously clawed her.
"Come," she says to the Tiller Man as Brom arrives. "Let us face them as a line together." Then she draws back five paces to a place next to Brom.

End Round 6: OOC: BTW, anyone heard from Lemick player lately? I've not had time to check the LnB in a while, nor GG.
Back to the combat:
Whether it was fear or intimidation, Barratore lets out a minotaurian roar (whatever that sounds like) as he puts all his huge frame into his next swing. Scales, bone, blood, guts, eyeballs, teeth, and bits of flesh explode in front of him leaving him sopping wet with goo and gore.
Perhaps another one had intended to climb aboard the prow, perhaps not. The sound of flesh splattering and blood spraying would probably detered any new attempt to gain the prow. Either way, Barratore stands there, snorting, watchful.
OOC: I pitty the poor sailor that's gonna have to swap that part of the deck. :}
Lemick is left speechless and dumbfounded, rooted to the deck, having just witnessed, right before his eyes the dissintegration of a living, breathing, flesh-n-blood, creature. He to is covered in bloody slime and gore. It is doubtful he'll sleep well anytime soon.
Brom, after giving the fishman off the starboard a stare, heads to the stern to help out, passing Artus by and stops short of the newest fishman pirate. OOC: Perception wise (Perception DC23), the battle is what it is. The prow has been cleared of enemies at this point, two remain off the starboard shooting crossbows, the stern is getting hot.
Harvest Moon's proving more of a match with her martial arts skills as she catches the newest pirate to board the ship with a swift kick. He seems pretty fresh but now has a bruise. She then clobbers her nemesis again. This one is looking really banged up, including slightly charred scales on his face.
She then steps back to join Brom.
Crag DM OOC: I don't see any reason why you couldn't Charge. The waters are relatively calm, very little if any swaying. The dwarf charges fishman Sh7 swinging his mighty axe, but the enemy has ample time to dodge the swing.
Peza makes herself scarce to enemy sniping and snipes at Sh9 herself. Despite firing into melee, her bolt imbeds itself in the enemy's chest, a good payback for hurting the pilot of the Sea Sprite. Taking so much damage with one shot, the enemy staggers a bit, the bolt deep in his flesh.
Gerox uses his spell that is guaranteed to hit as Crag misses his swing and a little energy ball scars Sh7's hide. He's got wounds but not too serious, yet.
Sailor 3 is about to obey Brom and head to the prow when something explodes in a shower of blood and entrails and... He decides to step back from the rail and crouch instead.
Sailor 2 throws up, not helping the situation any and giving Lemick more food for thought at what could happen to someone in battle.
Sailor 1 immitades Sailor 3 knwoing that once the ship gets under way, even if in a circle, it will be easier to defend.
The pilot ducks under the tiller and steps back 5' feet.
Artus, in desperate defense of his best pilot, interposes himself between Sh9 and the pilot and jabs his short sword in its general direction. Hit AC6. The enemy, having bled all over the spot causes Artus to slip and miss.
All but the biggest sails are now tied and the Sea Sprite can easily be seen slowly edging forward.
Start Round 7: The fight, which had started out so promissing to the fishmen (OOC: BTW, anyone know what these things are yet?) seemed to have reached a turning point, having lost the bow, against them.
Nevertheless, these aquatic creatures are known for their viciousness and determination.
Sh3 forgoes getting his trident and lashes out at Brom with his two claws and snaps at him. Hit AC10, 16, 7 with one claw raking the barbarian for 3hp damage.
Sh4, having had enough of a woman's fist and foot, steps forward to engage the little guy, a hafling, perhaps one not quite so tough. Hit AC23, 23, 19. The hafling is unable to dodge the onslaught of calws and jaws taking 10 hp damage.
Sh7 sneers at Crag and also lashes out with claws and jaws. Hit AC14, 23, 20. (OOC: ignore the d3, i hit it accidentally going for the Roll button). The dwarf sustains a rake and a bite for 7 hp damage.
Sh9, encouraged by his comrade's attack, continues on despite his heavy wounds, attacking Artus. Hit AC22,10. His bite misses Artus but not his trident. Artus takes another 10 points of damage!
The hafling is bloodied but still has a lot of fight in him.
Sh5 loads his crossbow keeping an eye on Brom.
Only decent target for Sh8 is Barratore and he shoots at the minotaur. Hit AC4. Not a good angle and he misses.
ShL1 curses as his target, Peza, gets smaller but he fires at her anyway. Hit AC16 (-2, -4)=10. Not having much luck here. :P. He decides to swim a bit closer.

The bolt whistles into the railing and Barratore looks out to the cause. Barratore glances about, he was in trouble as an exposed target and he had no where to go. Returning fire was possible, it just would not be very effective likely. But he saw no other option and so Barratore draws and hurls a javelin towards Sh8. The result of the wide sailing and short throw does not surprise him.
He had killed three of them and that would be enough, Barratore stares out into the water at death...
Co-DM Jonathan - ok, so you are fighting...and maybe winning... Thursday December 29th, 2011 9:45:15 PM
Correction from Previous round: I mentioned there were two off the starboard side shooting crossbows. It should read two off the port side shooting heavy crossbows and one off the starboard.
End Round 7: (so far) Peza certainly has her target pegged. Another shot like her previous one puts a bolt right next to the first one. With a girgle, the fishman toples bakwards and crumples at the base of the stern railing.
Harvest takes a peek over the railing to see if she can spot the fate of the sailor that went overboard but she cannot see the water near the hull.
OOC: post your change when you can.
Gerox plugs Sh7 again for 2 more points of damage. He still seems very capable of sticking it out.
Brom gets his first chance to make them eat steel and misses.
Crag tries to finish Sh7 off but misses with his axe again. Sh7 is still alive and well, or somewhat well.
Barratore DM OOC: I hadn't looked at your previous AC to realize you hadn't deducted the Enlarged penalty from your header.
The minotaur chooses to scare the fishmen by flopping a javelin towards Sh8.

Lemick recovers his senses, somewhat, but enough to toss Barratore one of the potions of Cure Light Wounds gotten from the Vargouille encounter. A Move Action this round to grab it, then drink it next round if you choose.

Harvest Moon looks about for a rope. But the only one is at the front of the ship with Barratore. Her own rope is down below with her pack. If only there had been a way to care all of her things with her at all times! Going into the water now, without being secured by a rope would be suicide, and Harvest Moon's instinct for survival will not allow her to do so.
Instead, she aims a quick flurry of punches at the nearest shark man before scuttling back five feet. In her throat is a growl, but in her eyes are tears of frustration.

A dying character immediately falls unconscious and can take no actions.
A dying character loses 1 hit point every round. This continues until the character dies or becomes stable.
So, starting next round Crag needs to start rolling to become stable or loose hit points, unless someone else stablizes him first.

Dead: The character's hit points are reduced to a negative amount equal to his Constitution score, his Constitution drops to 0, or he is killed outright by a spell or effect. The character's soul leaves his body. Dead characters cannot benefit from normal or magical healing, but they can be restored to life via magic. A dead body decays normally unless magically preserved, but magic that restores a dead character to life also restores the body either to full health or to its condition at the time of death (depending on the spell or device). Either way, resurrected characters need not worry about rigor mortis, decomposition, and other conditions that affect dead bodies.
ooc: i think it did change , here is what i found
Co-DM Jonathan - ok, so you are fighting...and maybe winning... Saturday December 31st, 2011 10:44:29 PM
OOC: What she said.
Yes, it did change. In 3.5 it was -10, in Pathfinder, it is your Con score as a negative number. Ex: Crag has Con 16, so he dies when his hit points reach -16. Or, as said above, a Disintegrate spell could do it outright.
You loose 1 hp each round until you stabilize. For Crag, it would be DC20 Con check, DC10+(10)=20.
Go to the Combat page in Pathfinder and scroll down to Injury and Deah section, about half way down.
A DC15 Heal Check will stabilize a dying character. Any sort of healing, even of 1hp, stabilizes a PC (good way to use that 0-level healing spell).

Harvest Moon is then about to join herself in the fight against the last shark man remaining upon the deck when her sharp eyes note the absence of one of the heads that had, until but a moment ago, floated off the port.

Gerox summons his arcane energy and hits Sh7 for the fourth time. The fishman is starting to look pretty bad.
Harvest issues orders to the sailors to help Brom and rescue Crag them moves towards midship to head off any new boarders. DM OOC: moving Harvest to S9 as per best quess on instructions.
Crag tries to stablize but continues bleeding. DM Note: he fell this round. At beginning of next round he looses 1hp first, then he rolls to stablize again.
Sailor 1 rushes over to aid Brom in his fight against Sh7. Combat Aid Another (Sailor's Standard Action for Round 9): DC10 = 13
DM Note to Brom: add +2 bonus to your attack roll in Round 9.
Artus rushes over to Crag's bleeding form and manages, with a strugle (hafling dragging an armored dwarf) 5' away from the enemy.
Sailor 3 and Sailor 2, remaining crouched, decide to move to the railing and ward off boarders again. The Pilot crouches behind an equipment locker waiting for the boarder too.
Round 9: Sh7 is in a pickle. An attempt to jump overboard would mean his two foes would get free swipes at him. Better to die fighting than running away, he chooses to attack Brom his biggest threat. His two claws and his bite hit AC:8, 14, 10. His many wounds impeded his attacks and they all miss.
Sh8 attempts to climb aboard, Climb 13, but his claws slip and plops back in the water. Perception Roll DC15 to pinpoint location. He's at Highlight to display spoiler: {U15}.
ShL1 attempts to climb aboard, Climb 8 (hahahahaha), and with a back-flop hits the water too. Perception Roll DC15 to pinpoint location. He's at Highlight to display spoiler: {U7}.
Sh5 cranks his heavy crossbow.
DM OOC: Good Luck guys. I had great rolls to finish out 2011 and lousy rolls to start 2012. :)
Harvest Moon quickly peeks over the rail. It is quite easy to spy where the two shark men attempted to climb aboard by the wet marks against the side of the hull. She points to the place where the shark man had attempted to board on the port side, then she moves quickly to the starboard side and peeks to see where this one tried to board.
Not it is a matter of waiting. Ducking behind the rail, Harvest Moon readies to punch the shark man when he tries again. Should he make it anywhere near the rail, she will be there to knock him down.

End Round 9:
Harvest locates the spot on either side fo the ship the two fishmen tried to climb. They'll probably try again, although the ship is moving now, so they may not be in the same spot where they fell.
Sh7 ducks Brom's swing, despite being distracted by the sailor, his life spared for 6 more seconds.
Peza, not willing to shoot into melee and possibly hit a friend, and knowing that two more are poised to climb aboard, holds her crossbow steady waiting for a head to pop over the railing.
Crag sinks a little further down the long dark tunnel towards Gargul's domain.
Gerox 'slips' over to the port side when he hears a splash but sees nothing.
Lemick bounces into action and heads towards Crag to try to pull him back from Gargul's domain. DM OOC: putting Lemick at L13, a Double Move. You are now close enough to heal him without expending a Move Action. BTW: Welcome back!
Barratore repositions himself to deal out death from midship if any of the fishmen get so unlucky as to manage to climb aboard.
DM OOC: Since you take up a 3x3, T13 would be your center and Harvest would be in your way. I'll put your center at T12, standing upon one of the closed deck hatches.
Artus manages to drag Crag a little more further away from combat.
Sailor 1 attempt to distract the fishman again to give Brom an advantage. Combat Aid Another (Sailor's Standard Action for Round 10): DC10 = 8. This time the fishman has smartened up to the sailor's tactics and the sailor's diversion does not work.
The pilot and the other two sailors continue to wait for a boarder.
The Sea Sprite begins to pick up a few knots of speed, albeit in a circle.
Round 10: Sh5 keeps up with the ship's pace and sees a huge target lumber towards midship. He fires his heavy crossbow at Barratore, Hit AC4 (a N1). His Crossbow string snaps sending spray in his eyes, the bolt sinks towards Davy Jone's Locker. Disgusted, he dives under water.
Sh7 believes its god is pulling strings with Fate for him as he still is alive. His sharp claws and teeth try to draw blood. Hit AC7, 12, 7, all three mising again!
Sh8 tries to climb aboard again, Climb 15, this time managing to get over the railing. Note: due to the movement of the ship, his positioned changed (as he did not move in order to try to climb).
Peza is quick to notice the fishman coming up and fires her bolt (Readied Action) hurting him severely.
If that was not bad enough, the pilot jumps up to stab the fishman (AoO) with his dagger, Hit AC14, which, due to the fishman not being able to dodge the dagger (ie., loss of his Dex due to climbing) the dagger imbeds itself in scales, dmg 4, next to a bolt.
This fishman is vewy, vewy angwy, and bloody.
ShL1 also makes another attempt to board, Climb 8, but fails again. Gerox easily sees the larger than normal fishman angrily grasp at the slippery hull and splash back into the water.
Note: Harvest and Barratore were too far away for their AoO. sorry

End Round 10: DM OOC: on the assumption Lemick will take his Standard Action to heal Crag, I'm going to go ahead and post the round as that won't change any of the combat stuff, I don't think.
With about as much blood and gore as can be blasted from a fishman, Brom finally connects his sword to scales and puts an end to Sh7's miserable ballance between life and death. DM Note: you do realize this was Max Damage to one who was already near death, right? :p
Brom and Sailor 1 are now covered in guts 'n brains 'n stuff. There isn't gonna be a sailor sleeping well for many nights.
Crag hears the celestial train toot it's whistle and sees a distant bright light in the vacuous darkness of unconsciousness begin to approach.
Somewhere here Lemick will do some healing, my guess. Either the other CLW potion, spell, or Heal Check.
Harvest moves to engage Sh8 and tries unsuccessfully to distract it some.
On the other hand, that didn't turn out to be necessary as Peza, shooting from above, finds it easier to shoot into melee when looking down and manages to send her bolt into the fishman's chest, imbedding itself just above the chestbone and going down through the heart and stomach. The Sniper watches for more 'Incoming'.
Gerox moves to L9 (L8 is technically in the water) and Readies a small fireball for a Boarder's Surprise.
DM Note: you think playing 1st level sorcerer in Pathfinder frustrating? Try playing 1st level Anything in AD&D 1st Edition. :)
Barratore 'gently' shoves Sailor 3 aside and positions himself to clobber anyone trying to climb up. DM Note: you cover area P8-R10, O9-P9 being an equipment chest.
Artus looks about him and signs of relief are barely visible as the wrinkles around his strained face slacken a little.
Sailor 1 spits something gross out of his mouth and tries to keep himself steady.
Sailor 2 quickly checks the water on the starboard side but sees nothing.
Sailor 3 gives Barratore a wide berth and stays crouched, watching the minotaur's blade more than the water.
The pilot stabs Sh8 just for good measure. The ship creates waves as it moves in a lazy circle. (Thats what those squigly lines are, btw)
Round 11: Peza sees a fishman emerge from the water right in front ot Gerox and try to climb up the hull (at M8). Gerox hits him with his pebble of fire. Seriously hurt he still tries to climb up. Bluff Climb 22!
However it was a ruse! DM Note: the N20 was pure happenstance. OOC: Gerox, you may try a Sense Motive DC27 to see the ruse. I can explain the high DC later if you wish. If you make it, you notice the larger fishman coming up from behind and attack it instead.
To make matters worse, Peza, Barratore, and Gerox, of course see the other, larger fishman pop up and toss a net at Gerox! Range Touch Attack Hit AC25. Gerox finds himself Entangled.
Note: ShL1 is still in the water some 5-6' down, as well as Sh5. Sh5 looks pretty badly scarred, ShL1 is undamaged.
Note2: This is when I would say Danger! Danger, Will Robinson! but that's probably very obvious: The next round and Entangled victim can be pulled over the side with a successfull Grapple Check.
OOC: If I missed anything let me know.

Harvest Moon rushes to the opposite rail to repel the shark man boarders. "Hoy!" she cries as Brom cuts down upon the rope holding Gerox Shale. This last Shark man is big. He is likely the leader. He is likely the one who challenged the SeaSprite from the false raft. At the moment, while in the water, Barratore Steelwind is the only one aboard with the reach of arms to attack this shark man. But the rope holding Gerox Shale now cut, the shark man will surely try to board.
Harvest Moon scuttles down the rail towards the aft. She will hide here, crouching behind the rail, and surprise him when he tries to climb up.

End Round 11:
Brom barely makes it to Gerox's side and in a desperate swing severs the lead rope of the net entangling the gnome.
Peza's aim at the leader fishman is hampered by numerous friends at the railing and she misses.
Lemick provides some healing to Crag, his wounds close up and he no longer hears that celestial train.
If my memory is correct, and sometimes it is, we re-roll 1's when healing. I've posted the question on the LnB. Good RoT (Rule of Thumb) is when rolling for healing, roll each die seperately so if one is a 1, you know it. ie: CMW is 2d8+2 or (1d8) + (1d8) +2; thus you know if one is a 1.
It would also help to say which spell/potion you are casting/using. :)
Harvest lets her joy resound but still worries about the fishman leader.
Gerox holds his breath, either waiting to scream in terror or go in the water. :) Answ: the net is as described in the Equipment. I'm picturing the webbing to be too narrow to get your hands through for anyone larger than Tiny.
However his friend comes to his aid and cuts the lead rope, so the danger of being pulled over into the water has past, for now. But the gnome is still tightly wrapped in the net.
Options: Escape Artist check DC20; Strength check DC25; or, if you already have a small blade in hand you can try to cut it at -2 Att rolls. It has 5hps.
Barratore scrambles over a toolbox and loose rigging rope to take a swipe at the leader but his unsure footing hampers his swing and the fishman leader ducks under water.
Round 12:
The leader and his last pirate push away from the ship in anger, the leader sneering "You no go anywhere. We come back! We take ship, eat you!", then the two dive out of sight.
The Seap Sprite continues it's circular journey, Artus issueing orders to the sailors in the the rigging to trim as needed. Even though moving in a circle, the ship has enough speed to make any more boarding difficult, not to mention the heroes waiting for any foolish enough to try.
Artus finally gives the order to slow the ship down to a crawl to see what can be done about the rudder.

"I do not swim well. But I have practiced a little while in Chessford. I think that it would be best to enter the water with a rope tied about us. This, in the same way we did during the storm. If we are terribly hurt then, we may be pulled back aboard by those who remain on the deck."

Looks like pretty much everyone but Sailor 3 and Peza get's healed 3pts, but they didn't get hurt either.
Also, the LnB verified that you get to re-roll 1's when healing. So, the 2d8=2 means that both d8's were 1's. Now I'm not sure what potion of healing it was but it could be two CLW or one CMW. Either way, they should be re-rolled.
And, a CLW is 1d8+1, a CMW is 2d8+2, per spell description.
So, Lemick re-roll for the healing potion.

Round X:
As the Sea Sprite circles, the WLAers discuss who's gonna go for a swim.
Peza volunteers to remain in the crow's nest watching out for danger.
Harvest volunteers to go under the boat and so does Barratore and Brom. The monk comes back with her rope. Barratore ties himself to the rail. The knot looks good around himself but pathetic on the railing. That is quickly fixed by a sailor.
DM OOC: There's no limit as to how many can go. From what I gather, Harvest, Barratore, and Brom are going. With everyone healed 3pts by Lemick, I highly suggest at least one more of that Channel Pos Energy before you go into the water. If we don't hear from Lemick by Sunday, I'll go ahead and roll the d6. Once the brave gather to take a swim, Lemick calls forth all that are wounded to within 30'. He then channels another aura of positive energy. (Everyone gains 5 more hit points).
"I'll stay topside. Give the ropes two good yanks if you need to be hauled up quick. I'll be ready with some healing, but hopefully you won't need any."
OOC: Aura used twice

After the healing, Gerox feels much better and is thinking about helping with the rudder but realizes without his spells (used up) and his element being fire he won't be very good under water. He fingers the net he was wrapped up in and an idea comes to him. He turns to the others and asks, "Is it possible to somehow screen the rudder off with nets or something else to at least give the divers some form of protection? If nothing else it would at least slightly slow down the fishmen or channel the way they can attack. Maybe we can sew some of these nets together and put them under the rudder to keep things from attacking from below. Then our spotters from above can hopefully see them coming, shoot arrows and warn the divers?"
Gerox using his mending spells will start putting the captured nets (don't know how many?) together to form a larger net.

DM OOC: just a quick Q&A for now: I counted 6 nets thrown. However one went down with the sailor that got eaten by the sharks, and one that missed Harvest was pulled back into the water. So that leaves 4 nets on deck.
For the net to encompass a medium creature, i'd say it would cover close to a 10x10 area laying flat.
The problem of 'sewing' the nets together is more Time than skill. Any of the sailors can do that and together they can probably do so to a satisfactorily degree for the purpose suggested.
How practicall it will work will be a good test. Tell me how you want the shape, 20x20 or 10x40, etc.
As far as the Underwater Combat, let's use Pathfinder for now. I'll post the question on the LnB in the meantime.

Brom grabs a rope and ties it off (d20 = 17 plus whatever skill is needed) then calls a sailor over to double check the knots.
He then looks to Barratore and Harvest "We gonna do this?"

While the Sea Sprite continues its slow journey in a circle, the party prepares to go into the water and under the ship to find out what's up with the rudder.
Lemick and Crag use their powers to heal everyone up and ropes are brought forward and tied to the ship as safety lines for those taking a dip. Four nets are gathered and sailors start tying them together, although the practicallity of the idea proposed escapes them. (OOC: worth a try, it may work).
DM OOC: I'm going to try to escape family duties and read up on both Pathfinder and Woldian underwater rules and see which ones is the easiest to deal with.

With the dagger itself and some lashings cut from the end of her rope, Harvest Moon cuts a groove in the butt end of her polearm. With the dagger in place, she binds the hilt to the polearm's butt. Once finished, she presents the weapon to Brom.
"It is best that you wield this," She says. "I will watch. And I will defend you in the near distances. Let us go."

Barratore points to one of the tridents the fish men were using. "A bit undersized for me, but might be quite deadly down there in yours. Grab one yourself girl." Barratore directs towards Harvest
DM Note: Kudos for Barratore for spoting the tridents. Give yourself 50xps for that. They would be better than the improvised longspear. :)
If you have the D&D 3.5 book, there's a good picture of the Net. They are already weighed down a little by the many little hooks sewed into the mesh (see description in the Pathfinder equipment page). Any unused tridents and/or the quisarm can be quickly tied to the underside of the length of net wall. Two should do, one near each end.

Gerox helps tie the nets together (does mending cantrip help?) and then adds weights to the bottom so they don't just float. (ooc We have 6 nets but I am not sure how big they are. Not finding the description in Pathfinder) He then ties the two ends onto poles which can be dipped into the water to act as a screen for the workers.
Gerox asks the brave swimmers, "Which part of the rudder do you want screened? Also you seem to be gearing for war to fight the fishmen but do you have a plan on fixing the rudder? Make sure you bring some tools with you. We can lower them in a bag from the side of the boat so they don't weigh you down. I suggest some sharp knifes to cut with, a hatchet, a hammer, some rope, and some grease.
I would suggest having a couple chosen for guard duty and others whose job it is to fix the rudder. That way you don't waste time. Finally I can cast a light spell on something of one of the workers to help you see but it might also attract attention. Your choice."
DM Note: I had counted 4 nets, but not all threw nets, and those were not counted. So 6 sounds right enough. Mending will help the torn nets. Previous post I calculated the nets to cover a 10x10 area laying flat. The rudder is not far below the surface, see picture, at max depth of 10', so light is not a problem.

"Hopefully they just jammed the rudder with something that can be pulled free without tools, but best to be prepared." Says the Dwarf as he positions himself at a rope, planning on being one of the people to quickly be hoisting someone from the water should things go bad.
Co-DM Jonathan - to the rudder!.... 4d8=13 ; Tuesday January 10th, 2012 4:26:32 PM
Preparations to fix the rudder are made by piecing the nets together to form a netting wall 30' long and 20' deep. Two sailors climb into the yawl boat and are lowered to just above the surface and the net is dropped into the water. The two tridents strapped to the bottom of the length of net insure the net will sink and not just float around. The sailors also take with them some carpentry tools that they can hand over to the Rudder-fixer-uppers if they need them.
Peza keeps an eye out from the crow's nest for the tell-tale sign of sharks or sharkmen. He keen eyes do not spie anything, yet.
Lemick watches the waters from the deck. The angle is not good to spie out underwater critters but he's there just in case.
Crag comes to with a lot of devine healing and checks himself for all his parts. He then casts more healing on all the wounded that gather around him.
Gerox lines the railing with Lemick and Crag, ready to pull up on the ropes of their friends at their signal of panic.
Lastly, when things look about as prepared as can be, sailors lining the railing and standing by to pull on ropes, Artus orders the last tiny bit of sail wrapped up, the anchor dropped, and the Sea Sprite comes to a stop once again.
Harvest, Brom, and Barratore climb over the rail, tied to ropes, with trident or javelin in hand. They take several big breaths then in unison, jump in.
Their momentum takes them 10' deep before they straighten out and start swimming toward the rudder. The water is comfortable enough and the visibility is good at that depth, 130'. (OOC: this is the 4d8x10 Woldian underwater visibility rules).
DM Note: I calculate the ideal spot for jumping in the water as being the G, H, I squares, that is, G is 5' from the stern rail proper, H is the next square over, and I the next. The ropes would be tied to the rail further forward where the distance from rail-to-water level is less, so less distance to climb back aboard.
Swiming: a character without a Swim Speed can move 10' on a successful Swim check DC10. You are already at the right depth, so all you need is two (20' of move) successful Swim checks to make it to the rudder.
Oh, and check your hit points in your header. Crag healed you guys some more. AND, don't forget any Armor Check penalties for armor worn, weapons carried in hand. Treat any weapon carried in hand as the same Armor Check penalty for shield, ie -1.

Underwater Round 1: The three Rudder-fixers spot the rudder readily and swim towards it. The net wall comes into view as they approach the rudder. The net wall blocks off one side, the ship itself blocks off another, the surface is another side, but three sides remain open, to the left, right, and from below.
The problem with the rudder is quickly seen. A net has been wrapped and tied around it in such a way to pin it, forcing the ship to go in a circle. A few moments with a sharp edge should do the trick to free the rudder.
A few moments, though, is a looooong time underwater with danger lurking about.
The leader of the Sahuagin pirates has his honor at stake and will never be able to recover his position in his tribe unless he takes something back, like a hero's head.
Through a signal only known or heard by sharks and Sahuagin, the command to attack is given. The shark strikes upward from the depths at such speed as to make the jaw drop! For only a brief second a blur is seen and then it hits.
DM OOC: it occured to me that the 'visibility' would not apply depth-wise the same as 'visibility' at same level. That is, the deeper one goes, the less visibilty, so looking down, one would not see as far as if looking straight ahead. My wild guess would be that visibility looking down would be only half as much.

The crewmates gasp in horror as blood spreads, staining the pistine waters. Only those directly in the water and the two on the yawl boat know what's going on.
Those holding the lines wait tense seconds hoping the signal to pull one up won't be too late.
Brom, knowing danger lurked, tried to fight back, but bubbles and blood obscure his vision and the impact jar him so his trident misses his attakcer.
OOC: BTW, the shark's AC is 2 worse this round but an 8 is still a miss. Sorry.
DM Note: Brom, if that was a N1, make a Dex Check DC10 to keep hold of the trident, use reg bonuses for Dex, no penalties.
Lemick tries to think how he could be of help in using his Channel Energy ability. At first he thinks of running down into the bowls of the ship but realises that the ship itself would imped his positive energy from reaching the swimmers. However, he could jump into the yawl boat, or slither down the ropes to the yawl boat and do it from there.
DM Note: Jump would be DC10, but staying in the rocking boat after the jump would be a Dex DC15 to all in the boat. A Slither down Rope would be a simple climb DC10 but but would take 1 whole round, whereas the Jump is a Move, leaving you with a Standard still to use. :)
If you choose one of these options, or another daring action, post it first to cover this round, then post your actions for the current round. Note: if you fall in the water, that'll be another Move.
Barratore continues to poke the shark with his javelin. Two nasty holes are now spewing shark blood. But you know sharks, they take a licking and keep on ticking.
Harvest Doesn't want to have to come back down to free the rudder and trusts the other two to feed, er, fend off the shark so she starts cutting the net with her knife.
OOC: You still haven't updated your HPs in header, right?
DM Note: don't need a To Hit, but do need damage. A dagger does 1d4, I'd say a good hunting knive would do 1d3. Would your Utility knife be smaller than a hunting knife? if so, 1d2 damage sound about right? When posting next round, roll dmg twice, once for this round, then for the current round.
Shark's turn: Sharks like to bite and rend and shake their heads back and forth ripping flesh to tiny bits, busting bones and just making a gory mess of things. Worse still, the smell of blood in the water can attrack shars from dozens of leagues away!

DM Note: makes sense, though, as the rope would be pressed up against the side of the ship due to Harvest having pulled it up against the hull when she went under it, so a good grip would be hard. :)
Brom's unconscious bleeding body starts to sink. Not only that, drowning is a REAL possibility, as unconscious things don't tend to be able to hold their breath.
OOC: Don't have any action from Lemick yet. Depending on what he does the past two rounds, Brom may not be all that bad off. But the shark is just listing in the water right now.

It is free! Harvest Moon turns from her labors to signal to Brom and Barratore Steelwind that the rudder is free. Brom, however, through the cloud of blood, is disturbingly still.
She tags Barratore Steelwind upon the leg and makes a gesture of grabbing, she points to Brom, and then makes a motion that is the tugging of a rope. She then, herself, fastens one hand around the netting that once wrapped the rudder and tugs upon her own rope. If all goes well, the netting should be drawn to the surface with her and drawn completely away from the rudder.

A brave jump by Lemick brings healing to Brom and the shark, bringing the barbarian out of the grasp of Davy Jone's Locker. Not so much for the shark, as the damage done was just too much.
A mad scramble ensues as the three ropes are pulled up and all four hauled out of the water. The sailors in the yaw boat snag the floating shark and hawl the 10' Brom Eater into the boat, which is then quickly hoisted up.
As a Spit-in-your-face act, while the sails are getting released and set, Artus sends sailors in the yawl boat to the floating platform that had served as a decoy with orders to destroy it. They pour oil on the dummies and platform then set them on fire.
Once the yawl boat is back in place, Artus is about to give orders to the pilot when Peza still up in the crow's nest sees something like masts with sails heading in their direction.

It is very much a relief to see the Fixer Fleet. Though, Harvest Moon, all this while, had absolute confidence that with the direction of Navigator Artus Morindim, they, aboard the SeaSprite, would have been able to find Rum on their own.
Her robe - the only garment in the Wold that she owns - still dripping wet with seawater, Harvest Moon examines the bits of jewelry captured from the shark men. She gingerly lifts a neck chain from the pile with the tips of two fingers and holds it at arm's length away from her. With something of a lost and doubtful look, Harvest Moon turns to her friend Peza.

Relief washes over crew, navigator, and many of the young heroes as the Fixer Fleet hoves into view. With the pirate shark-men fled and their 'fishing' platform destroyed, Artus Morindim shouts out commands and the SeaSprite is away! A good wind blows quarterly and the sloop picks up speed, enough that a foamy white bow wake sprays the bow. Obstacles and victory, the feeling of LIFE for those who remain surge through veins.
Many of the heroes have gathered to look over the jewelry of the Sahaugin and the strange jewel that the sailors found on the 'fishing' platform. The jewelry is of many shapes and styles and show differing amounts of wear. (Know Geography DC10: Highlight to display spoiler: { there are Elennian, Alisidurian, dwarf, elf, and Tauric styles represented in the jewelry, no aquatic style.}
One chain that holds a black obsidian stone is so obviously dwarf-made that it attracts the eye immediately. And the stone is large, fully the size of a cherry. An apricot. An child's ball... It grows larger and larger and larger until the black volcanic stone is a six foot sphere on the deck of the ship!! A humming begins, like voices, and then the sphere of rock splits open while waves of heat pour fourth. A figure falls forward while words, grating like boulders crashing together come from the stone. (Linguistics DC 10 Highlight to display spoiler: { It is Terran, but the words make no sense to anyone.}, and Perception DC 10 Highlight to display spoiler: { The newcomer obviously understands what is being said. }.
And then, in the space of a breath, the stone reverts to its original form, only leaving the form of an armored dwarf sitting up on the deck...

Harvest Moon backs away. The alarm on her face is clear in the widening of her exotic elf-born eyes. Her hands come up to protect her face against the wash of heat that comes from the stone. And, when the heat subsides along with the size of the growing stone, she peeks from around those hands, alarm now replaced by curiosity.
The glimpse that she had received of the dwarf had touched as with a finger of memory. Now she looks upon him to understand why.
"Who are you?" she asks of the dwarf. No questions about the incredible, barely believable, method of his coming. A simple question of identity. She lowers her warding hands and tips her head to one side, the wisp of hair that so typically hangs down from her forehead, now partially dry, falls down into her eyes. She blows it from her face with a sharp puff of air before adding, "Who are you? And how is it that I think that I know you?"

The dwarf curls into a fetal position and lies motionless on the deck for several moments, except for his dark, inset eyes, which flick about erratically. He wears dull black banded mail and carries a steel shield encased in a black cover with the blue triangle of the WLA stitched upon it. A dwarven waraxe is wedged between his armor and backpack, and a light mace is tied to his side.
After a few moments, his eyes refocus, and he registers the presence of the group. His hand jerks toward the axe handle, but stops just as suddenly.
Instead of pulling his weapon, the dwarf slowly climbs to his feet. Unsteady on the rolling ship, he grabs the nearest solid object to balance himself, and looks about.
"I am Bralin Stone..." He begins, trails off, starts agains only to stop mid-breath as he spots Harvest Moon. His eyes linger over her form as confusion plays over his brow and features. He starts again, distractedly, "Bralin, The Stonesinger. I seek permission to join your quest."

Her vision blurs. One SeaSprite separates into two SeaSprites one imposed upon the image of the other. One Bralin splits, attempting to become two. The sun above. The many persons around. A frown drops onto Harvest Moon's face and she bears down as she shakes her head, and tries to clear her sight.
Memories. Curious memories touch her as from far away. She feels a man. He is kindly and warm. She remembers his stories. The feeling is as of warm sun and green grasses. In this feeling she knows that the Wold is alive, and the aliveness is all around. She remembers his stories. But she cannot remember what they are about.
The twoness, the sense of twos, it relaxes, relenting in its struggle. The twos accept their oneness and all things in her vision come together once again. The SeaSprite is again one. The sun. The sea. The people. They are all as they were. The twoness is gone. The memories are gone. But the feeling still remains. It is a curious feeling, but it is a good feeling.
"I am Harvest Moon," she says to the dwarf, Bralin the Stonesinger. And, in saying the words, she knows them to be true with a strange certainty that she had never felt before. She is Harvest Moon.

Young the warriors may be, but in their long trip across the seas they have learned caution. It takes several minutes of careful words from the seven heroes and the dwarf stranger before a hand is extended, names exchanged. The fact of the Woldian Badge prominent on this Bralin's shield seems to put many at ease, and a collected sigh is heard when Crag offer his hand.
Bralin and the other heroes can look around and see the dozen sailors that are left on the ship heave a collective sigh of relief. There isn't going to be another fight! A weatherbeaten halfling with a barritone voice calls from near the rudder. "So, a rescue or a sending, and a WLA member already, eh? Master Bralin, you are on MY ship and owned by the Woldian League of Adventurers. The SeaSprite is sailing with a whole fleet of Fixers and other hangers-on from Elennia to establish a new trading town to open the west of the continent of Yrth. The group that is before you is the scouting team for the WLA to get on the ground floor of this new city. As you have no where else to go, why don't you set up with them and the WLA hospitality until we arrive?"

By the time heroes, sailors, and the navigator, Artus Morindim get fully moving, the SeaSprite has merged once more with the Fixer Fleet. The Fixers aren't completely trusting, and a couple Fixers with 3 tough looking armsmen Teleport to the SeaSprite!
Once they verify the SeaSprite is who they say they are, the Fixers get to work, fully healing everyone, and mending ship and sails from the effects of the storm and battles. A scribe comes over later by a small boat and asks for a history. And finally, the junior Fixer stays to help.
"I'm Bertold", he begins over the evening meal, "and we should be only days from Rum. How exciting! We'll be looking for land every day now, and I'm to support this ship as the captain decrees." He looks around at Artus who only nods at the adventurers. Shrugging, Bertold continues. "So... is there anything you would like me to do to help?"

And yet, she is with friends that can heal with light, that can cause men to become unconscious by producing colors, and they have encountered lion men and shark men. (One of their very own is a bull man!) Yet, one must surely become accustomed to such things. The armed men seemed little disturbed by the manner of their own coming. And, after the armed men are revealed to come from the Fixer Fleet, Harvest Moon comes out, exhibiting very great curiosity.
She fetches her book when Scribe Bertold asks for a history, and Harvest Moon points to the places upon her map as she speaks of the storm, the Island of the Batwinged Heads, and the false Raft of the Sharkmen. Of course, she explains, the locations on her map are not exact, as there was no way of knowing how far they had been blown by the storm.
"Could you speak of the history of the Fixer Fleet," asks Harvest Moon of Fixer Bertold at the evening meal, "from the time we were separated until now? Did we lose ships? Which ones?"
"And ... " Her eyes roam to Peza, who has explained so many things to her. "We have captured jewelries from the sharkmen we have encountered. We must sell them," she says. "Do you know of anyone in the fleet interested in buying such things?"

He starts at Harvest's question of the Fixer, Bertold, and then joins the conversation. "Fixer Bertold, can ye provide a portal to The Catacombs?"
Bralin goes on to explain the wondrous store to his new found companions - a place accessible by magic from almost any city in the Wold that buys and sells gold, gems, jewelry, and magical items of every description.
