Toregan looks around, not noticing anything out of the ordinary, and seeing Meranus doing fine work on the litter, he begins to set up a camp. He takes out his bedroll and iron pot, as well as his flint and steel. He then leaves the rest of his gear, except for his bow, handaxe, and armor, and begins to wander around the immediate area looking for any loose firewood, or trees that seem dead and dry enough to chop into firewood. He also looks around for anything that could be edible, knowing that they may be stuck here for some time, and saving as much food as they could, could only help in the long run. He also looks what little sky he can see, the temperature of the air, and the dampness of the air, trying to figure out what time it was and if there was any inclement weather approaching them.
IF Henrix decides to tell the rest of us what he can see/hear/percieve then if it seems hostile in nature, Toregan will take out his bow, find a good place to hide, and ready an action to shoot the first target that performs a hostile action (ie. charge, attack, grapple) if i am allowed to be that specific. If not, then he'll just hide and not prepare an action. After a few minutes all of the sounds of the jungle go back to normal.
Meranus makes a fine litter and the group is able to get Artrius on it. He is stable, but without treatment, it's uncertain how long he will last.
Camp is cleared and set up.
It's late afternoon. Please post the watch order (if there is one.) along with perception checks.

Toregan does his best to fix up Artrius, but without a healer's kit, there isn't much he can do for him. "I'll try to tend to Artrius' wounds as best I can, but I'd need a healers kit to actually fix him up effectively. We need to get to the Trading post as soon as possible. They probably have someone that can help him. In the meantime, I'll just keep him in as little pain as possible." He then looks up to the sky and notes the angle of the sun through the trees. "It'll be starting to get dark soon. Might want to just rest here for a day or so. See if we can do anything for Artrius. I'll take the last watch so that I can patch up Artrius for awhile. I'll try to do the same for you Songsteel. You still seem to be hurting from our last fight." Henrix and Heckle return from foraging without much success. When the ranger finishes speaking, Henrix approaches him and places a gloved hand on the man's arm. He stares at him seriously, though not urgently. The raven speaks in a level voice as compared to his normally effusive tones. "The jungle is a dangerous place. This area is not safe. There is something nearby that makes everything else go quiet. We should not stay here." Henrix then removes his arm and his expression again becomes blank.
The effect is ruined as Heckle begins to snicker.
At some point while out of earshot of the others, Henrix will whisper to Tack a question the halfling has probably heard from him a hundred times: "Are yyyou surewecannn truuuuust... thessep-p-people?"
Henrix watches as Toregan clumsily attempts first aid on the Wayfarer, feeling that his current magical knowledge is quite incompetent. Toregan listens intently to Henrix, feeling that whenever the young mage actually said anything, it was something important. He nods as Heckle informs him of the situation. "I agree with you completely Henrix. It's not safe here. I didn't notice the forest going quiet though. Good job noticing that. That usually means a predator, or some hostile entity is nearby. If we can get a fire going, that might discourage whatever is out there. Here in the jungle, its most likely an animal, and they don't generally attack large groups of 'prey' or approach fire willingly." Toregan looks around the camp carefully, his face contorting into an expression of deep thought. "We should leave in the morning. The sooner we get to safety the better. I don't like our odds of surviving here for a long period of time. still, no use worrying about it now. Just try to relax and get some sleep. We'll need all our strength to get to the CTP."

Meranus immediately volunteers for first watch, although he will look confused when people start taking about fourth, fifth and sixth watches - "Why so many? Are they in fashion among your people?" He also votes in favor of fire, both for warmth and for light for the watchpeople. He isn't exactly sure what clearing the camp is, but not doing it seems like the weaker course, so - "Of course we're going to do it!" When the option of sleeping in trees is raised, Meranus looks up at the branches, down at his body, and returns a firm "No."
Meranus fulfils his watch obligations admirably, then immediately retreats into his tent. The snores emanating from it are interspersed with occasional curses at the guide that needed his sleeping bag.

The first moon sets dropping the jungle under the canopy into utter darkness. It does not last overly long, but for Henrix it might be the longest t20 minutes of his life. First Dawn Monday October 24th, 2011 8:42:49 PM
The centipedes are quite dead and Leonan makes extra sure as Toregan helps the pair of poisoned heroes. The poison seems to have already run its course, at least it is getting no worse. In a day or two the affects should be completely gone. Ability damage heals tat the rate of 1 point per day. this attack occurred just before sunrise
Tack feels the venom is likely worth something but has no idea how to get any, where the glands or sacs or whatever a centipede has as an internal organ storage or what they would look like if he were looking at them even if they randomly just started cutting into them.
An hour passes before the sun begins to brighten the sky and it takes nearly another 2 before any real light gets through to the canopy floor. Other than, gnats, no-see-ums, flies and mosquitoes though the group is unmoleseted. Just as light shies through the thick cover above a mighty, yet distant trumpet, like that of an elephant of amazing size calls out and the distant echoes roll through the trees. The local insect and small animal life seem to take no notice and the sounds of birds and small animals moving about above and in the leaves upon the floor continue uninterrupted. Artrius' condition has improved, though he is still unconscious.

He stops and looks around as the trumpeting noise washes over the group and relaxes slightly as he notices that the other creatures have paid it no heed. He looks over the bloodied/ichored bodies of the ferocious vermin that attacked them in the night with a disdainful look on his face. "Tch. These hides might've been useful. Too bad we have to leave them here to rot, but we really should get going." The group makes quick work of breaking the camp and getting ready to travel, following Toregan's direction towards the mesa he saw yesterday that is hopefully the one with the trading post. Artrius is secure and Meranus has no issues carrying the wounded man. the heat and humiditiy of the day seem to increase at a constant rate yet somehow it is not actually raining. Within an hour of sunrise it feels as if it is well over 100 and oppressive is about the best term any can think of to describe the conditions. The insects are ever present and how they know the precise level of every party members face regardless of race or movement is a mystery, but minor cloud of gnats seem guided by the gods on that specific mission. The canopy above seems in constant motion with small animals and the occassional glimpse of something larger such as a monkey and even a jaguar for a brief moment as the big cat gauged the party some 70' below.
Birds fly about, bright colored macaws and small anonymous black and brown ones. Food and water are certainly in abundance, but as Toregan and others with survival skills point out, much of it is not suited for consumption. The heat continues to climb and as the day moves towards its apex several more thunderous trumpets are heard from far to the east, rolling into the the thicker jungle. The creatures who are the cause must be large indeed to be heard from such a distance and into such an environment as the group now moves.
High noon passes and aftera short rest to refill water skins at a clear stream the party is moving again and the humidity has finally spiked. The sky open and the group soon finds themselves in a deluge. All sound, save that of water striking broad leaves and the ground about them ceases. Visibility retracts instantly to a mere few feet....

Even with the horrible, boggy humidity, the annoying, pesky gnats, and even the threat of giant beasts in the jungle, at the sight of the panther, Toregan has never felt more at home. Once the rain begins though, Toregan begins to see problems. Calling out for the group to stop, he gathers them in the driest area he can find. He begins talking with a neutral expression on his face, "While I am usually fairly confident in my abilities to find my way through all kinds of wilderness, this rain is making it quite difficult for me." Toregan pauses a second, and breathes a short sigh. "If we continue on, I cannot promise that we will not veer off from our destination by accident. However, we could also manage to stay on track and not lose any of our precious time. If I had to choose, I'd say we press on, but what do the rest of you think?"

Meranus may be the best off of the party, with a ranger-sized obstruction to duck his head under. He does not, however, appreciate the mud under his feet. Slipping in this mud and in this company... "We need to do what's best for the weakest of us. Right now, that's this one," Meranus says, as he prods the underside of the stretcher with one horn. "I'm fine with pressing on. Is he?"

(Andrew) Henrix Sharpsword AC 12/12/10 -- CMD 11 -- HP 10/10 Thursday October 27th, 2011 10:00:48 PM
Henrix makes no contribution to the discussion. It's unclear whether he simply can't hear the party over the downpour or if he's just so focused on his spellcasting that he can't be bothered. He's spent his day alternating between trying to Prestidigitate an impenetrable bubble against insects (with little success) and trying to concentrate on researching a new spell to do something similar (with even less success). He gave up this endeavor when, while walking and reading, he tripped over a rock and fell rather comically into a patch of mud. Heckle thought it was hilarious, and has begun to refer to him as "mud mage" for the last hour. Now Henrix is angrily using the same cantrip to try to keep his garments dry, though they are being soaked faster than he can dry them.
Heckle is nowhere to be seen, safely tucked into an inside pocket of Henrix's robe.

Toregan pulls the group under a large monkey pod tree, which offers at least some relief from the pouring rain to discuss the groups thoughts on continuing. Toregan believes he can maintain the groups course and if the rest feel satisfied with that he will push on.
Yngvar is concerned with being tired after pushing through the weather and having issue finding a good camp
Meranus expresses some concern over the Wayfarer, Artrius. What might become of the human he currently uses to shield himself from the rain?
Leonan leaves the final decision to Toregan, but does believe moving blindly through an unknown jungle to be a dangerous proposition. There is obviously something about that is quite large and has no issue with the weather's downturn.
Henrix is quite absorbed in his own issues to care about where the group gets soaked to the bone
and so the party confers under the partial protection of a monkey pod tree. The Wold extends about 20' before being completely lost in blinding sheets of rain, which is about 15 further than anyone could see while not under the tree. Other than rain and their own shouting voices, there is nothing to hear. Nothing save another trumpeting blast from somewhere far to the east.

When finished, he will start doing the same for the others, assuming they let him. He seems to be waiting for Toregan to make a decision, whom he watches expectantly.

"With Artrius wounded we should get there as fast as possible, but this rain can't be good for his condition." He looks around the group, nodding at Yngvar before continuing. "We press on, and if we manage to find an area with decent shelter from the rain, we'll camp there." With that, Toregan once again leads the group out into the rain, continuing in the direction the were headed before, and moving at a slower pace so that no one would be separated from the group. The down pour continues for the entire day. Toregan locates a suitable site to rest overnight that at least keeps most of the rain off. A rain which is still coming down hard as the day turns to twilight and then becomes night. Artrius's condition is hard to tell, possibly worse possibly better, definitely unconscious with numerous broken bones and a fever.
With the rain the land beneath the trees is very dark, but hopefully it will also keep the unwanted critters in for the night as well. Occasionally the sky high above lights up with a brilliant flash of lightning and rolling thunderclap. It looks to be another beautiful night of rest in the jungle

Toregan makes sure Artrius is placed in the driest area of their camp. He picks up Meranus's comment and replies somewhat distractedly, "Yes, but the moisture can cause infections in a person, and reduce their body's ability to heal and recover. With his wounds something like that can be a death sentence." Toregan feels Artrius's forehead and shakes his head gravely. "He's got a fever, which probably means an infection. I don't have the supplies to heal him properly here. We leave early in the morning, and rain or not we'll travel the whole day. We need to make up on lost time." He then begins to search around the camp for any wood that may be dry enough for a fire. "A fire would probably help him stay dry, but I really doubt that there will be enough dry wood for a fire." Toregan sighs while slowly going around camp, carefully inspecting each branch and tree limb on the ground for its dampness. "This storm couldn't have come at a worse time. I wonder..." Toregan looks up at the massive trees that this jungle consists of. "Is the forest testing us? Is this place akin to the Crying Woods?" An involuntary shiver runs through his body at the thought. The Crying Woods had always given him a feeling of danger and hostility, a feeling not present in him right now, but what if? He pushes these thoughts from his mind. "If this is the jungle's will, then I shall overcome it. Artrius will be saved." Toregan volunteers for the last watch, and attempts to treat Meranus in addition to Artrius and Leonan this night. While his attempts to ease Meranus' and Leonan's wounds were as successful as his previous attempts, He seemed to make progress with Artrius, a welcome development in this hostile land.

The rain finally relents about mid way through the second shift. Insects roar to life and may perhaps even be more abundant then they were before the rain. A fire was impossible save what may have been an hour at most by burning the staff like object Meranus has. Night deepens, the moons rise and pale silver streams break through the great jungle canopy and with the clearing of the storm clouds the Ning begins to take on a nearly pleasant outlook. Nocturnal animals emerge both upon the ground and above on the canopy and sky
This night no creatures find the resting party by design or accident. A. Few tense moments occur as a pair of jaguars stalk about the camp for about an hour before deciding to move on and not come after Meranus
Leonan spies several tiny lizard creatures leaping through the canopy much like squirrels and he witnesses a hawk sized bat shoot through the canopy in a failed attempt to catch one
Torregan's sharp eyes catch movement on the ground nearly 90' up and in the thicker tree branches a small biped and perhaps was the reflection of light off of an object just below the head. "Our luck seems to be turning. Maybe this jungle isn't such a bad place after all." As his gaze falls over the area he saw the creature his grin fades from his face, and is replaced by a concerned look. "What could that have been? It could have been a sentient being, but to be able to get up there so stealthily and disappear from my sight..... Is there really a beast in this jungle with those skills?" Morning arrives and the group prepares to move out. Yngvar managed a crude but functional piece of headgear for any who wants it and a shelter or really a blanket like covering for Artrius. The Wayfarer is still unconscious and with fever though the fever is not dangerously high
With Toregan leading the way, the group pushes on. The ranger finds himself unable to identify much of the flora and fauna about. The Cthonian jungle is an an ancient and primitive jungle. A botonists dream come true. There are though familiar and common features that Toregan can identify and basic rules of the wilds seem to apply. Bright reds and purples are warnings of toxins, large broad leaf plants are edible and their stems hold water and other such truths. Shortly after beginning the days trek, a canopy break confirms the Mesa is still where it should and that by mid morning of the next day the group should be standing at it's base
Midday break after four hours of hacking through the jungle is a much welcomed rest. Sunlight glitters high above and the heat and humidity has everyone thoroughly soaked and covered in sweat. Insects and small birds buzz and call out and Artrius is the same as he was.

Heckle spies a lone figure nearly 100' up in the a tree about 40 behind the group. It is small and dark in coloration and humanoid

Toregan eyes the movement to their right warily, stowing his axe in his belt and taking out his longbow. He warns the rest of the group of their apparent stalkers. "Watch your right. Something's there." However, with Heckle's alerting cry, Toregan tries to look back at the trees, but can't seem to succeed in pinpointing the figure. After he fails at locating the figure he softly asks the group their next course of action as they continue along the path. "I can't see whatever is following us, but I'm pretty sure it would be whatever I saw in the trees lats night. It appears we are garnering a decent amount of attention. Unfortunately, if they're hostile, we may end up getting ambushed. We could call out to them and see if they respond. That might end the problem here, but it also might call more creatures to our position. Thoughts?"

Turning to the right of the group, Meranus bellows in a deep voice. "HELLO, ALL OF YOU SMALL ONES. We are the brave clan of Stormhorn and our protected. We seek safe passage to the Cthonian clanhome called Tradingpost. We also have injured. Medicine and a direction would be most welcome. What say you?!"

Meranus has had enough of the jungle. He thinks the human in the bar that told him about the wonders of Cthonia might have been overstating things a bit. The minotaur thinks it's time to share some of his own impressions, and leave a few besides.
Pulling the darts out of his arm with contempt (Fort save 20), Meranus stalks into the bush with a roar about twice as loud as his greeting. He keeps going unless he sees, hears (Perception 18), or runs into whoever threw those barbs at him. Truly angry for the second time since leaving his island, his first blow is intended to kill.
If he happens to see an armed, unfortunate enemy walk, shoot, or run within his reach (10', AoO), Meranus will attempt to hook his horn around the enemy's weapon and pin it to the ground (Disarm, CMB = 21), taking the opportunity to roar into that enemy's face.

Henrix and Heckle may or may not see the assailants, depending on Toregan's circumstance bonus, but their actions are straightforward either way. Heckle takes off and flies upwards; he will spend as many rounds as it takes to find a safe, high spot in the trees where he can remain out of danger and also perhaps get an eagle (raven) eye view of the situation. Henrix, meanwhile, noting the imminent danger mutters and waves a piece of cured leather, casting Mage Armor on himself. He then positions himself roughly in the middle of the party, as far as he can in all directions from any enemies.

These things looked like they were a form of short reptilian humanoids, about the size of a halfling. They all had brown and tan scaled skin, snouts filled with tiny teeth, and long, viper-like tails. And from what we've seen, they use poison, stealth and weak ranged weaponry. Since they prefer stealth and ranged weapons I'd hazard a guess to say they they aren't very strong." Instead, he keeps looking for the little guys with the poison pointy sticks. What did you think he'd do? Henrix keeps his eyes on the trees even as his companions study the poison they found; he lashes out telekinetically at the first kobold he sees (attack 19 vs touch, damage 4). Henrix ducks the first pellet and the second lands harmlessly in the dirt; Heckle takes off once more for the trees, giving a warning squawk too late to help the others.
The mage is not prepared for the two kobolds to charge him at once and so he takes a full blow to the chest, though the other club skids harmlessly off a transparent barrier.
1) If Leonan is within 30 feet and there is a square adjacent to him from which Henrix can safely cast, he will withdraw from the kobolds and cast Magic Weapon. "Hollllld outyour s-s-sword!" he chokes out, gasping for breath and clutching his chest. (If the DM determines that Henrix cannot touch the sword safely this round, he will hold the charge.)
OR
2) If not, he will back up a bit to try to avoid any flanking (though TK does not provoke AoO, if I'm reading this right) and once again, gasping for breath and clutching the wound hidden underneath his robes, lash out telekinetically - this time, at the kobold who clubbed him. (Attack = 20 vs touch, damage = 2.)
The red-haired mage's eyes widen as he sees the minotaur fall and his allies surrounded by foes. He looks quite out of place: a novice spellcaster seeking magical knowledge, a freckled young apprentice bookmaker terrified of the little creatures which are not much smaller than him, and a man desperate for this not to be his end.

The group somehow manages to stay on its feet.
Most of the group is doubled over, nauseated from the smoke. Leonan fights defensively and nearly takes off the head of a kobold, but his defensive stance cause the attack to go high, missing the creature.
Henrix is able to make his way to Leonan and cast Magic Weapon.
Then the remaining Kobolds (the ones using slings last round) move in, effectively surrounding the group. They begin clubbing away.
Leonan strikes as the kobolds approach but misses.

Toregan finnally loses the contents of his stomach, but that action probably saved his life, as a kobold's club flys over his head. The other kobold however, had a hard time even swinging the club in his general direction. As Toregan lifted his head, he saw that almost everyone had been felled, but the kobolds were..... saving them? Toregan sees the swarm and knows that the time has come. "I was always the hunter..... now it seems I am the prey. At least I can try to protect the others." With his stomach still turning, Toregan calls out for Leonan to surrender. "Songsteel.... Yngvar, Meranus and Henrix are all stable because the Kobolds stopped attacking to stabilize them. It is obvious to Toregan and Leonan that they want you guys as prisoners.

Darkness is the only thing each of you know. For a few moments each of you come to at various times, realizing you are hanging upside down, hands and feet lashed to a pole. There are two Kobolds, one at each end carrying most of you. Meranus has the rest of the Kobolds carrying him.
You all continue your lapses into and out of consciousness and soon find yourselves in a sturdy looking bamboo vine wrapped cage. Each of your hands are individually bound above your heads. There are two other people in the tent with the group.
A lizardman and an elf. Both have been cut on and are missing various body parts. The lizardman is missing part of his shoulder and a calf. The elf is missing most of a hamstring. Both are alive, evident by their ragged breathing, but only barely. Both are unconscious. Artrius is tied up as well, though it is obvious his being tied up is doing nothing to help his condition.
It's been several hours and by now each of you are back to 1hp.
The group can hear much celebrating, drums beating, and high pitched yipping as the glow of fire dances through the holes in the building from the darkness outside. It is obvious there is much celebrating going on. From the voices outside you guess there is quite possibly more than 50 kobolds in the village, not including young.

Some notes, Any weapon or shield or object in hand at the time of unconsciousness is nowhere about. Everyone IS still wearing clothes, armor, packs and such.
Several Characters struggle against the vines that bind them within the bamboo cage and Meranus is successful. The minotaur somehow manages to wriggle one hand and then his second free of the binding vinerope and in a moment is completely free. With a slightly better view he can see dozens upon dozens of warriors dancing about several massive bonfires 60' away.
Hoots and chirps echo through the jungle and gold 'ash' is thrown into fires with other liquids causing minor smokey explosions. All of the creatures are brown and tan with the long serpant like tails and hold bamboo tubes. None are apparently paying much attention to the cage or those held inside, but the entire tribe seems to be about 'celebrating'.

Meranus escapes his boonds and unties everyone else in the cage. The minotaur scoops up Arrius the Floating City Wayfarer and looks to the others.
Toregan, once freed, moves quickly to the lizardman and elf. Both are in a bad way, but he can see where thier wounds have been tended to prevent infection and too much blood loss. These kobolds apparently like thier meat fresh. Both are unconscious and the Lizardman weighs in close to 350 pounds even in his emanciated state. The elf is practically two dimensional he is so thin. Toregan tests the bamboo bars and they flex nicely. Perhaps enough for the smaller prisoners to even slip through, but he Leonan, Meranus and the Lizardman would never be able to. The bars are three bamboo poles lashed together and then lashed to the trip of poles next at multiple six points from top to bottom. The door open towards the firs and the dancing kobolds.
Toregan's sharp eyes and ears can easily pick up the kobolds, none are overly focused on the cage, but if the entire group were to exit carrying three others, it would seem they would surely be noticed before eing able to get around the cage and into the safey of the jungle some 20' away.
Henrix spies something quite different. Moving from a tree further in to a tree with a limb just above the cage is a kobold. This one, does not appear as the others do. He is colored with dark black scales with green highlights and a brown crest running from the bridge of his nose, over his head and all the way to the tip of his tail. Visibly equipped with a recurving short bow, a decorative hilt peaks from a scabbard at his hip and a pair of pouches on his belt. Henrix is positive the creature in the tree only 15' away at this point has seen him, but this black kobold makes no signs of caring for the obviously out of place bird.
The black kobold then steps off th branch and rockets to the ground where the party now see him land near the back of the cage in a crouch. He sheathes the his rapier as he stands and places a large purposefully rolled leaf upon the ground. Before any words can be exchanged, he launches himself into the jungle and the black beyond. As almost an afterthought, two of the poles fall away from the back of the cage, the six vine bonds cleanly cut. The last pole remains only because it happens to balance itself.

Leonan pauses for a moment, as the others are making their way into the jungle. He looks at the two people caught in the cage. The elf can possibly be rescued -- he looks pretty light. The lizardman -- obviously so heavy there's no way they can drag him out of here and make an escape. Leonan, having already contemplated the pure horror of being eaten alive, has no intention of leaving *either* of them behind to face that fate.
Tears well up, blurring his vision. He mutters a clumsy prayer to Gargul in the Celestial tongue.
He unslings a javelin and jams it sharply between the ribs of the Lizardman. He leaves the javelin there.
As swift as he's able, he hoists up the frail elf and exits the cage. He places the elf over the back of the mule and crouches.
He unhobbles the mule and tries to sneak off into the jungle behind the others.

None questions the turn of events outwardly and haste is made to get away from the area. Meranus carrying Artrius and Leonan the elf prisoner. With a heavy heart, Leonan also does what he feels must be done. To die in such a way, eaten a piece at a time is no death for any being. With that thought, Leonan slips his javelin through the lizardman. The mule is rescued and soon all are, as quickly and quietly as can be, moving into the darkest night of the jungle.
Wounded and weakened from poison and a lack of food or water, the group moves away from the kobolds. The light of the bonfire fades behind trees and with distance and soon enough the only light is the feeble glow that filters from the moons and stars above through the thick jungle canopy. Thus far no cries have been heard that might indicate the group's disappearence has been noticed.

To be further away from those flesh eating monsters would be significantly more desirable, but he doubts he'd be able to continue for more than another few minutes. After awhile of walking, Toregan calls for the group to stop. "I thinks we're done for now. If we keep running, I'm going to pass out." He sits down and takes out his only trail ration and divides it amongst the group, providing them with at least a little nourishment. "We'll rest until morning at the least. The group collapses in several heaps. Toregan hands out some food, knowing the importance of eating even over sleep. The great leafy plants low to the ground are quite pleasantly soft when you'r this tired. the monkeypod trunks and deeprooted trees lend themselves to the general comfort of the area. The only thing missing is a mossy bed.
Sleep has not quite taken all, when a flare of light appears in the darkness about 40' away. From the orange glow, it is obvious a torch that has just been lit. The halfling tells of how he came to be lost in the jungles of Cthonia, his wounds tell of how all has not been peaceful during his stay. Giant vermin, the kobolds, raptors and a multitude of other nasty creatures has pursued and occasionally caught Tel. Were it not for a certain black colored kobold, Tel would be dead several times over. At this point in the story, a dark small shape disengages from a near by tree, a black scaled kobold with a deep green colored fin from snout to tail. A sword at his side and recurved bow on his back and most importantly, a small Bundle made of leaves in an outstretched hand to Toregan
He closes several paces and stops. It is the same creature Tel knows and the same creature Toregan remembers from the cage as freeing them. The kobold stands motionless but very much at ease, arm extended with the leaf bundle.

An alarm goes up, but is quickly quieted and the kobold makes no moves as the Raven squawks and then quiets down. When Toregan bows and takes the bundle, the black scaled kobold steps back a couple paces and regards the human with his head slowly leaing to his left as he does so. If he understands the ranger is hard to tell, the kobold makes no sign it. His black tongue flicks out, much like a snake and he rights his head with a quick look to the others about the fire. Tel speaks, conveying to Toregan how he had also been assisted quite unexpectly by the kobold and again the kobold makes no sign of acknowledgment or understanding.
With a last partial side long look at Toregan, the kobold retreats a few paces and then darts into the black quickly vanishing from sight.
Within the bundle are 12 small gourds with a wooden peg stopper. Each only slightly larger yet lighter than a potion vial from the city. No lables exist on any and the scent of each is identical, a light honey with perhaps hint of underlying rose.
The fire creackles on and morning arrives. Still and sore but much better than before the pary rouses in the early moring rays streaming through the dense canopy.

Artrius remembers some of what happened, but can offer no reason or historic context of such a thing having ever happened before. "The Teucri devices in Floating City and elsewhere are very powerful, I am at a lost as to what other power could cause such a malfunction." Artrius will test he new found strength by slowly getting to his feet. His knees buckle and he groans with new found pain, but he does eventually gain a standing position. Artrius holds up a hand and deflects any additional effort at using another gourd. "I am well enough to walk, but could not assist in our defence even at full strength. As much as Leonan would like to just give up, it seems that Toregan has enough survival instinct to keep them moving. As the plod through the jungle, Leonan goes over recent events.
Was persuaded into accepting an insulting business deal. Got beaten nearly to death by gangsters. Nearly died in a magical disaster. Ended up lost in a murderous sentient jungle. Nearly eaten by prehistoric vermin. Overwhelmed by alchemical weapon wielding stealth-monk midget lizard folk. Woke up in a cage with two half-eaten fellow prisoners. Couldn't take both the prisoners -- had to murder one in cold blood to keep him from suffering more. Was "rescued" by a stealth-monk midget lizard man with different colored scales. Bumped into a halfling who seems even more clueless than the rest of them. Caught in a rain storm.
Well, at least this rain storm seems to be the least of their worries, all things considered. Leonan keeps his feet moving by focusing on getting out of the jungle and putting this whole "adventuring career" behind him once and for all.

Toregan urges the party forward and manages to keep them together. The rain has seased from its initial rate to a steady hard warm rain. Visibility extends to about 60 feet though the banging of water off broad leaves makes shouting still a neccessity. What appears to be an easier trail opens to the left, but the ranger keeps to the more difficult terrain and pushes even further right with the group. The mesa was not far and the group was moving slightly uphill, two maybe three more hours at this snails pace in the rain. "Should we not take what seems like a trail just over there!" Artrius shouts over the thundering rain. In the moments it takes the sound to reach Toregan and for him to turn to answer, the jungle of Cthonia supplies it better than anything he could have said.
A flash flood rips down the 'trail', an instant literal river Another appears further to right making the party travelling on the only real safe section of jungle floor.

The party keeps moving with Tel spotting the bird creatures and givin his travelling companions a heads up on them. Meranus heads over to the fast moving stream with the intent of filling his water skin. The saturated ground near the fast water is far softer than the harder ground Toregan had been leading them along and Meranus's adds nearly 2000 pounds more weight than the ground can take. The ground gives away and falls into the raging torrent. Luckily the stream is not very large, about 4' across and perhaps 3' deep. Still it is a great deal of water and moving very fast.

Meranus hits the water as Tel informs the group that the creatures he saw, the three nasty meat eating dinosaurs he saw are Velociraptors. Known for cunning, pack style hunting and gneral deadliness.
Most in the party have no hope in helping the large minotaur and they do what they can. Yngvar reaches out with one of the bamboo poles from a prone position while Leonan and Toregan leap into the fast moving water. Henrix begins looking about through the continuing rain for Tel's deadly dinosaurs.

The group manages to get Meranus out of the water. The rain continues and after a short breather, the party makes ready to head towards the mesa. Toregan assumes is position in the lead and the party falls in behind him. Artius shakes his head slightly, but keeps any verbal comments to himself and with a sweep of his hand over his head he readies to lead the elf. A few quite stesps into the renewed journey and Artius speaks up, "Does anyone have a spare weapon. A hammer, or short sword or something i could borrow. Henrix snaps back to reality and shakes himself, shuddering in the cold. He and his raven whisper to each other, quietly discussing what they know of velociraptors. If they know anything more than Tel, Heckle will announce the knowledge to the party, likely in a humorous or obnoxious fashion. The pair will then continue to follow the group silently, careful to keep at least one other person between them and the jungle in all directions.

Tel and Henrix can and do both confirm that Raptors such as the ones spotted moving along the party's right flank and now lie ahead of them, do indeed use such tactics as ambushes. The group stands about. Artrius accepts the handaxe from Toregan and thanks him as well as Tel for the offered weapon. He takes a few measured swings with it to get a feel of the weapon in his hand when he arches an eyebrow at the minotaur and his voice takes on a bit of an edge and he snaps back at Meranus.
"Yes, Domi did indeed, but he also saw fit to give me a brain. The dinosaurs looking to eat us have talons and teeth and only a fool would purposefully enter a fight less armed than his opponent. I am no fool." Looking a bit annoyed, Artrius turns to Toregan, who seems to be the leader of the party and traises his hands slightly to either side. "So what is the plan? Tell me you have something in mind beyond fleeing as they eat the minotaur and gnome?"
The rain continues, the jungle is relatively quite saved the gentle warm rain on great broad leaves and the fast moving stream on either side of the party about 20' each direction. The velociraptors are nowhere to be seen or heard.
The elf still merely stands with a vacant stare and a body that looks as if a strong wind would be the end of him.

Leonan doesn't bother drying off, the rain soaked him to the bone long before he jumped into the water. He spends a moment acquiring his shield back from Henrix, and slings it, drawing his sword next.
Leonan examines the tactical situation for a moment. Then he shrugs a bit.
"I'll be protecting the elf -- I have a feeling they're here for him. He's walking wounded, and they're hungry for what they think is going to be an easy snack. We didn't rescue him from those gods forsaken cannibals to have him eaten alive by a pack of lizard-birds. Over my dead body."

It also means that the path clears up ahead. And beasts are never mindless. The fact that these ones are that intelligent," Toregan lets a grin break through on his face, "That is the very reason I came to this place. Now, I could try to appease them. I know a few tricks on how to deal with animals or I could just shoot them from over here and we will avoid an ambush. Thoughts?" As he talks he takes out his bow and nocks an arrow, .

There, Heckle will follow the group from overhead and try to keep a lookout for the raptors. [Feel free to roll Perceptions for Heckle at +6 and for Henrix at +5.] Then the wizard draws a thin piece of cured leather from a hidden pouch and utters an incantation, casting Mage Armor on himself.

With the thought and assumption of an ambush imminent, the group pauses to consider thier options. Try an corss one of the fast moving streams and hope to avoid the ambush ahead or move into it knowing it is there and hopefully being able to spring it without being caught in it.
Heckle takes to the air as Henrix casts Mage Armor. Aside from the jungle and rain Heckle does not see any signs of the carnivours.

Artrius looks a bit quizzical at Meranus's comment as if he is not understanding the minotaur. He opens his mouth a couple times, but words fail to come out. Finally he simply shakes his head and nods towards Toregan to continue on. Leonan stays in close guard to the elf with Artrius taking up a position a few paces back from there. Henrix has the rear.
With much of the group silent, the travails of the past few days possibly more than could be born weighing on them, Toregan takes point and moves slowly forward, Meranus directly behind him. Heckle remains aloft, flitting from branch to branch in the lowest part of the canopy about 70' overhead.
Toregan leads the group about 150' further down the trail, the rain has all but stopped, but the twin fast moving streams are still quite full. Ahead, about 40', a piece of something catches the hunters eye. In dark recesses of a monkeypod tree, a darker shadow shifts. Peering out over a thick root is a raptor. It regards the ranger for the breifest of moments and then its beak dips several times. Once, twice, seven times in all. The Raptor emits seven high toned chirps as it leaps from its hiding place and moves away from the group, further down the trail and out of sight.
The entire party gets a good view of the raptor as it flees, It is about the sized of a halfling with feathers about the head and its arms. The rest is covered in green and brown speckled scales. Even when the raptor moves, it is very difficult to follow. That Toregan noticed it in the first place is a miracle.
The jungle is quiet, the party stands in a single file line. Toregan, Meranus, Tel, Leonan, the elf, Artrius and Henrix. 20' to either side is a fast moving 4-5 foot wide stream. 40' ahead and to the right by the stream, is a large monkeypod tree where the raptor emerged. The root system of the tree is 15' across.

Mumbling to himself about dinosaurs that count and how in the shadow realm he ended up in such a predicament. Over 100 trips to the Post and now this, to be eaten alive. The group files past the tree, and as the seventh member passes, the raptors strike.
The first comes from the roots and dark are of the monkeypod tree. It leaps at the screaming Artirus. But miraculously as the man flails the hand axe before him, the creature misses with its talons.
The second lunges from a concealing tree nearly 60' in front of Toregan. It charges closing rapidly, leaping the last 5' into him. Razor sharp talons, teeth and claws tear at Toregan. [Hit AC 9/23/18/12/6 2 hits Dmg 7
Artrius swings the hand axe as he backs away screaming for his life. The axe passes harmlessly past the Raptor

Taking a few steps back, Toregan aims an arrow at the raptor, but his pain caused him to overlook a root sticking out of the ground, which he promptly stumbles over, making his shot go wide. 5 ft step away from the raptor Attack (+5+2 from favored enemy): 8 (Nat 1)

Henrix circles around Leonan to keep the raptor at a distance. Then, for the second time during this jungle adventure, he utters a word and gestures powerfully, white light streaming from his fingertips. He reaches forward and softly taps the hilt of Leonan's sword, which shimmers briefly.
Meanwhile, Heckle gives a belated warning squawk from high above. His beady eyes scan the foliage for more enemies.

The Raptor hops a couple times as Toregan falls and seems to squeel with delight. that is until it sees the other raptor collapse after Leonan pulls his sword from its crumpling body. The Raptor hisses violently at Leonan, turns and withdraws to the west. Vaulting the 5 foot steam by nearly 15' more is quickly dissappears into the jungle.

The Cthonia Jungle Raptor Attack - over? (DM RobC) Monday January 9th, 2012 9:03:12 PM
One raptor seems to have made a successful escape, and can no longer be seen. A small trail of blood heads off to the west - the same direction as the raptor - and could be followed easily enough by those trained in such things.
Meranus and Henrix go to their fallen comrades side, plying him with the remaining healing salve. Toregan will live to fight again it seems. Tel and Yngvar stay alert for further trouble.
Artius still looks about frantically, both hands now gripping the axe tightly. Leonan shakes droplets of blood from his sword and readies himself for more battle.
Noises in the undergrowth ahead draw the parties attention, as you see a young human man come running down the path from the north towards the party - shield in one hand, warhammer in the other. The elf positions himself behind Leonan for protection.

Yngvar manages a weak smile, his crossbow is resting across the top of a tree root that is also supporting Yngvar. His once pristine leathers are no coated with mud, dried blood, and splotches of various types of ichor, most not worth thinking about too hard. Leonan was happy enough to let the other party members handle the talking. He silently hoped that one of Domi's Bravest didn't stumble on them by accident but rather was part of an organized search party. I mean, the outpost people surely must have been expecting their arrival right? Someone must have known that something went terribly wrong.

Toregan keeps his bow out and looks at the path of blood, letting the others do the talking. "Meranus must've done a good deal of damage to it. We could still hunt it down." Looking down at his wound ridden body he decides that they aren't in a good position to hunt this creature down. Instead he goes over to the corpse of the raptor that was felled, takes out his dagger and begins to cut away at the beast's hide. No sense in leaving good leather and meat behind.
DM's judgement on this one. What check should I make to skin and butcher a good portion of the raptor?
Description: Toregan is a human of a fair height and fair build. He has brown hair, brown eyes, and tan skin with a full scraggly beard. He sports three scars on the left side of his face, coming down at a 45 degree angle from his temple to his jaw, with one going over his left eyelid. His armor is covered in fresh blood and has a number of gashes torn through it. As way of thanks, he dips his head briefly. Otherwise, he remains motionless, expressionless, and pensive. Inwardly, he is fascinated. Three "guides" thus far have failed to properly transport groups of mercenaries to their intended location, which is by admission of our great host dangerous and in need of our defense, and whose very existence hangs on the word of a strange businessman... what have we gotten ourselves into? More importantly, how do we get ourselves out? Is this "trading post" really- ah, well, if all the "guides" used the same transportation magic, perhaps its creator sabotaged it or failed to properly draw the runes... The Cthonia Jungle Raptor Attack - Meetings & Meat (DM RobC) Tuesday January 10th, 2012 8:53:18 PM Toregan prepares to attack, but quickly notices the mark of Domi - guardian and protector - and lowers his weapon, calling for others to do the same. Yngvar is quite the sight - his gear having seen better (and cleaner) days Leonan watches on in silence. Unneccessary noise may only attract further danger.
The man reveals himself to be Rexxan, a fellow traveller whose guides have recently been devoured by dinosaurs. Despite the attitude shown to him by Meranus, Rexxan does his best to heal the wounded party. Atrius and the elf both seem noticeably better.
The elf watches as Toregan goes to skin the raptor. "Please. Allow me" The elf takes the knife from Toregan and deftly goes to work skinning the raptor, cutting out some of its teeth, removing its claws and finally cutting what little meat he can from the animal. "It's not just the hide that has value on these creatures" he explains as he works "Most of these things can be traded". Finally two small piles remain - a pile of unusable remains, the other a neatly stacked pile of bloodied parts. "Do you have anything to put them in?". (48gp worth of raptor parts were recovered)
Henrix is curious as to why Heckle didn't alert him to the approaching man. His curiousity is felt by his familiar who descends and lands on a nearby branch. "I was just having a look over the tree tops. I can either fly below the trees and see if anything is nearby, or up high and see what's further away. I can't do both." the raven says with a hint of exasperation to his genius master "If it helps, I didn't notice anything nearby, and while I was up there I did see that big rock we're all heading towards. Looks like we'll reach it easily before it gets dark" The raven swoops down next to the raptor carcass and takes a few hops closer "Is anyone going to eat this?" he asks hopefully, looking to his master.
Everyone receives 636xp from surviving the raptor attack
------------- OOC: The party can attempt to take trophies/parts from any dinosaur kill. These will include hides, teeth, claws, and meat for food. (Erik) Leonan Songsteel AC 21/13/18 -- CMD 19 -- HP 13/13 Wednesday January 11th, 2012 9:25:14 PM
Leonan watches Heckle do what dark birds of that ilk do with corpses. Except Heckle can talk and is apparently a wizard's best magical buddy. It's kind of creepy. With that sharp pointy beak and those claws. Hey, in fact, there are a lot of similarities between those dinosaur monsters and a bird. Nah, its probably nothing.
Leonan also offers a slight, almost unnoticeable smile to Rexxan. He was raised to respect men of the faith (more than mercenaries like himself anyway, but that's an entirely different tale of self-loathing). For a moment, Leonan speculates that Rexxan's arrival at this time and place was arranged by Domi as a blessing -- but that thought quickly fades when he realizes that would mean that Domi was also responsible for getting Rexxan's guides eaten by dinosaurs and that doesn't seem a very favorably sort of thing to think about a god you were raised to honor.
Leonan peels his attention away from the new travel companion and back to the Elf, for whom he feels personally responsible. He moves to the Elf's side and wordlessly takes his position as the wounded hunter's (?) bodyguard -- for now anyway.
The Cthonia Jungle Raptor Attack - Decision Time (DM RobC) Wednesday January 11th, 2012 9:58:45 PM
Heckle helps himself to the raptors soft eyeballs, while the party decide what to do next.
Rexxan is anxious for a fight against the dinosaurs and suggests the party use the raptor blood for bait. Toregan seems inclined to make for the Trading Post sooner rather than later. A view shared by Meranus Leonan stays his silent self. Studying and assessing the party, and considering other implications.
What will the party be doing next? You suppose it is around noon - though it is hard to tell in such a dense jungle. Will the party try their luck with another fight, make their way to the outpost, or something else entirely?

Where's the Trading Post? - (DM RobC) Thursday January 12th, 2012 7:35:03 PM
The party continue their travel in a north westerly direction that soon becomes straight west. Heckle seems confident that is the direction the party should be heading and Henrix begins to feel a growing sense of curiosity from his companion the closer the party get to their destination. Though you hear noises from nearby bushes and calls simililar to that made of the raptor earlier, no more creatures are seen. By early afternoon the party finally emerges from the dense jungle.
This is the location where the Trading Post is supposed to be, however instead of a welcoming village full of star-struck maidens, you find yourselves staring up at the edge of a mountain. The sides of the mountain appear very steep - almost vertical in fact. The red and orange rocks contrast with the green jungle. It's amazing how close the jungle is to the mountain face. It's as if the trees grew and fought for every piece of land that they could take hold of.

Henrix snaps out of his reverie and beckons Heckle to his shoulder, thanking him for his dutiful report. He whispers to Heckle for a moment, informing the bird that he would prefer for him to stay within his sight and therefore underneath the canopy. Heckle then chows down on raptor eyeball while Henrix pointedly keeps his gaze away from the spectacle.
On his way back up to the trees, Heckle swoops low over Meranus, barely avoiding clipping the minotaur's horned head. "Oy, Fatty! You smell worse than that, that, uh revocloptor I just ate!" He ascends far out of Meranus's reach, snickering ["heckling"] in his way as he goes.
As they continue toward the trading post, Henrix considers his suspicions. Upon reaching the mesa, he decides to act upon them. He approaches Toregan, tapping him on the shoulder and indicating that the ranger look forward. Then, with an index finger, he reaches in front of Toregan and begins to draw shapes in the air, leaving behind streams of glimmering light which are multicolored and immobile. It takes him quite a while - at a rate of perhaps one or two words per round - but eventually it is clear to all who watch that he is literally writing in the air [using Prestidigitation]. His writing is neat, the cursive of a professional scribe. It takes him several minutes, but when he is finished, the message says:
"I have reservations regarding our destination. This voyage has been nothing if not mortally dangerous. Our mysterious employer's purposes for sending us here are vague and his description of our actual imperatives upon arrival at the present location was suspiciously and - perhaps intentionally - misconstrued. The very same night that we received the job, an arrogant gang attacked us in plain view of the public, then fled. Additionally, at least three mercenary groups, including our own, have failed to properly arrive at their intended destinations, ostensibly by mistake. However, given the unlikely possibility that all of the teleportation devices - of which there were presumably at least three - were dysfunctional by accident, I suspect foul play, though I do not know whether sabotage or setup. I do know that we are insufficiently informed about the location we are traveling to and about the consequences of arriving at said location. I would therefore suggest extreme caution."
When Toregan and the others have finished reading it, he waves his hand and the message disappears.

Where's the Trading Post? - (DM RobC) Friday January 13th, 2012 9:56:45 PM Rexxan looks at the mountainside. If there is an outpost in there, then logic says there should be a door.
Artrius watches as Henrix writes in the air and looks at the wizard with a quizzical look "You a mute or something?" Looking back to the party he continues "Toregan has the right of it. The outpost is up there. Well, that's where I remember it being anyway. Strange, where's the lift?"
Heckle nests atop a branch approximately 80ft above the party, with a clear view of the proceedings and out of Meranus's reach. Leonan suggests sending Heckle up top to look for the outpost - if it even exists.
Toregan and Tel notice what Artrius may have been referring to. A set of ropes hang from the cliff nearby to the right of where you stand - maybe 50ft off the ground. Approximately 400 feet up seemingly connected to the ropes is some sort of platform perched at an angle. You are fairly confident that you can see some humanoid figures atop it. They don't look to be in distress of any kind. In fact, it almost appears as if they have seen you too. After what appears to be an animated discussion, they go back to whatever it was they were doing. They are moving around the platform slowly doing something to it.
"Aye - that's the lift" Artrius confirms "Though why is it halfway? Now what?"
In the boxes you find a number of mundane items - some pitons, rope, hammers and nails. Judging by their position, it is likely they fell from the platform and smashed when they hit the ground.
Tel's keen eyes also notice broken twigs, crushed grass, and the kinds of signs one would expect to find along an unmarked trail. It heads to the left towards a set of hedges and bushes.

I suppose that a sharp sword does not a dull mind make. Now, where is that bird...? He then tugs on a strap around his neck and unearths a whistle, which he blows once. When Heckle descends, the wizard will whisper him instructions to fly up to the top of the mesa to see what's there and then immediately report back.
At this point Henrix notices the lift, and stares at it blankly, deep in thought.

Meranus gathers the tools in a pile and examines them whilst Toregan tries to make a clear area lest anything else fall - intentionally or otherwise - from the platform. Only the rope seems to be in good condition. The rest looks used, but the quality seems sound. Meranus takes a piton and drives it into the mountainface to test that it will support his weight. A capable climber, he is confident he could reach the top by nightfall.
Yngvar decides not to expect anything, and to take the world as it comes.
Tel's examination of the bushes, meanwhile, proves more fruitful. He discover a trail cut into the side of the mesa. It is old, appears to be partially collapsed in places, and seems to rise curving around the circumference of the plateau. It is a switchback trail and impossible to see where it goes or if it continues all the way to the top.
Rexxan tries to get the attention of the humanoids above, but either they can't hear him or they are ignoring him. They seem to be waving at something and then can no longer be seen.
Henrix then feels an overwhelming sense of terror and panic from his familiar. Heckle cannot be seen in the sky anymore, but his emotions are clear. Looking up you finally see a small black dot getting larger and larger. Heckle is in a dive - straight down towards you. It looks to be controlled. He pulls up at the last moment to land behind Henrix"Big... birds!" the raven pants "Next time... you fly!"
Once he regains his breath, Heckle explains as best he can "I was flying up, minding my own business. Saw a trail and a big nest nearby too. Anyway, I'm flying higher and higher - the guys on that bit of wood started waving at me, and then started to run away. I couldn't work it out, so I kept going. Heckle stays within arms reach of Henrix keen not to encounter any more big birds.
It is a relatively even slope that zig-zags along the south-eastern side of the mesa. As the party climbs higher, and can finally see above the treeline, you see something unexpected (to all bar Yngvar who has decided anything can be expected). An ocean to the south. The jungle and mesa stop short at what looks to be a sudden edge - a cliff perhaps?
The climb continues until Tel halts the party.
Ahead, a 15' section of the trail seems to be missing - fallen away to the ground below. The trail seems to continue on the other side, but this gap could be an issue.

Meranus quickly runs back down to the base of the mesa. Travel is so much faster without the little ones slowing him down. He looks for the nearest tree that could (a) provide wood that would support his weight, (b) be cut down with as little fuss as possible, and (c) hopefully not draw too much attention. Rather than chopping down an entire tree, the taur decides to simply lop off some of the branches that he can reach. With the branches under his arm, he also stops to grab the wooden remnants of the fallen crates that may aid in construction of his makeshift bridge.
Whilst Meranus has gone for wood, Rexxan readies his grappling hook and looks at the mountain above him. With the zig-zag pattern of the trail, it could be possible to catch the above section of trail with the hook and continue the journey from there. It looks to be around 30ft above you.

Meranus keeps working on the bridge. Hooves were not intended to dangle in the air. (craft: woodworking 14, 16 with Leonan's aid)
It's a long trail - (DM RobC) Thursday January 19th, 2012 11:05:26 PM Toregan twirls the grapping hook and rope, and casts it up. With his first throw he manages to secure the hook on the ledge above. A quick pull on the rope to test it, and it seems secure.
Once done, he then gives Meranus some assistance by constructing a makeshift bridge. Interlocked branches, a few planks of wood from the crates, and the rope found earlier all tie together nicely. In fact, the bridge is so secure, everyone can walk over it with ease. (OOC: Even with all sorts of difficulty modifiers applied, it still works out that no acrobatics check is needed. Nice survival roll there Toregan!)
Leonan expertly leads his pack mule across the bridge. The animal seems reluctant to follow, but your coaxing convinces it to follow (used your D20 roll for Handle Animal to guide the mule over the bridge)
Rexxan, however, shows off his prowess and starts climbing up the rope to the ledge above. He makes it in good time, and rests on the ledge while he awaits the rest of the party to join him.
Tel spots the birds in the sky, but at this distance he cannot be sure what they are.
Henrix looks at the "birds" indicated by Heckle. He is quick to deduce that they are not in fact birds, but pteranodons - large, flying, carnivorous reptiles. Fortunately they seem to be leaving the immediate area.
The group press on, continuing their upward journey. You guess you have made it to around 600ft now, and the view is quite clear. A lush green jungle, a calm blue ocean. If it weren't for the ever-present dangers, this land would be quite nice.
"Uh oh" says Heckle, the raven's eyes looking skyward. The pteranodons look to have returned back to the mesa. They don't seem to have spied the party, and instead continue their journey to the mesa. You have quite a clear view of them from this height - you guess only a few hundred feet away, maybe less? It is unclear whether they notice you or not, but they don't head towards the party.
"Phew" says Atrius with a smile of relief.
A small pebble drops from above onto his head.
A few stones then follow, falling around you.
The stones start getting larger.
A rockslide?!?
Make reflex saves vs DC12 quick to avoid getting hit!

Henrix admires Toregan's handiwork as he follows the party across the "bridge."
He and Heckle stare up at the pteranodons, paralyzed with fear. If a pair of man-sized land-based raptors could give the party trouble, then two giant flying dinosaurs would make of the party a quick snack. He looks down in surprise and manages to react in time to back against the side of the mesa and hold over himself and Heckle tent-like folds of his cloak, which absorb the impact of some of the smaller stones.

Weaving and dodging around the rocks, Toregan manages to avoid the worst of the rockslide. He looks to make sure everyone is okay and not in danger. If they are, He will assist them in any way he can. If not, the he will look up and try to spot what caused the rockslide.

After narrowing avoiding the falling rocks, Tel reaches for the rope and proceeds to climb, barely making it across due to his still frazzled state of narrowly becoming flattened by falling boulders. Once across he takes a position on a nearby boulder and tries to locate the flying birds once again.

It's a long trail - (DM RobC) d8=7 ; Sunday January 22nd, 2012 10:43:36 PM OOC: No trouble at all
The party brace themselves against the mountainface as rocks rain down from above, but finding room for nine people in such a small space is tough. Toregan sees what is about to happen but is unable to react in time to save both himself and his friend. Yngvar is slow to react, and looks up to see what is coming as a large chunk of rock hits him squarely on the face and knocks him towards the edge of the trail Yngvar takes 7pts damage!.
Reflex save Yngvar to not fall off the edge - and anyone else who wants to try and help him!
Atrius and the elf remain huddled against the rockface.
Rexxan and Toregan catch signs of large leathery wings beating far up the mountainside. When the wings can no longer be seen, the rocks cease falling. Surely this is just a coincidence...

Staggering back with blood streaming from his broken nose, Yngvar realizes that he is balancing on the edge of the cliff just as his foot came down to find no more mountain under it. His arms were extended, waving back and forth frantically while trying to maintain his balance. Nipper, his familiar weasel, pops out from under his jacket pocket and scampers down the arm that was waving over the trail. This slight redistribution of weight was just enough to bring Yngvar back to the trail.
With his fingers grasping at air, Yngvar finally latches onto Toregan's outstretched hand and pulls himself to the mountainface.
"Than's"

The outpost - (DM RobC) Tuesday January 24th, 2012 8:39:36 PM Toregan reaches out and grabs hold of Yngvar helping to steady him and keep him from falling. Rexxan calls on Domi's blessing to heal Yngvar and does quite a good job of it yet again. This party seem to require assistance, perhaps Rexxan's path lies with them?
The party continue their ascent relatively easily. No more predators seem to be hunting the party for the time being, though you cannot shake the feeling that perhaps they are just waiting for an opportune moment.
When you reach the top of the trail you are standing on the eastern side of the mesa, and the sight is truly something to behold. To your east you can see the vast, lush green jungle below the mesa, with the occaisional small pocket of what look to be open, grassy fields. "Well, I'm not saying I'd like to build a summer home here, but the trees are actually quite lovely" notes the elf.
To the north-west you se the almost perfectly flat land atop the mesa. Copses of tress, thick brush with fields of wild, waist high grasses - you even note a couple of animals (antelope, perhaps?) grazing in the distance. To the west you can see the sun start to go down behind the mesa.
To the south east you notice a vast field of golden grain. A stony trail leads through the field and heads towards a large wooden structure. The fence of the outpost.
"At last" sighs Atrius.
The party, eager to finally reach their destination head towards the outpost. The palisade style fence is constructed of large wooden logs and appears capable of keeping most kinds of trouble out. You note manned towers rising above the corners of the square, fenced outpost. Watchtowers most likely. The large double gates to the outpost are open and you continue to walk towards them. Getting closer, you notice each man in the watchtower appears armed with a bow of some kind. Their weapons aren't pointed at you yet, but you certainly have been noticed by the men.
A dozen or so people stand inside the gated area. You notice most are holdings things such as clubs, pitchforks and the odd sword or two. They don't seem to be holding them threateningly, nor are they trying to hide them. A few start to backstep as the party approach. One man calls out as the party nears "State your business!"

Yngvar turns and looks at Atrius, "it's all you buddy."
Yngvar looks around, a frown on his face as he takes in the palisade and watch towers. The palisade and watchtowers on top of a mesa with a very narrow, damaged trail up it. The palisade and towers that are not defensively placed along the edge of the mesa, or the top of the trail, but far enough back to allow an enemy to gain a foothold before laying siege.
Yngvar mutters low enough for his companions to hear him, "no wonder this place needs help, their security wouldn't keep toddlers out of cookie jars."
(Derek) Tel Longstride AC 19/14/14 -- CMD 15 -- HP 11/11 Wednesday January 25th, 2012 6:13:12 PM

"...representing the Longstride Trading Company." he motions to the rest of the party. They have their own reasons to come here, but I vouch for them on behalf of my company's contract."
(Erik) Leonan Songsteel AC 21/13/18 -- CMD 19 -- HP 13/13 Wednesday January 25th, 2012 6:26:27 PM "I'll pay for a bath and a shave. Get me a damned hot bath and alert the barber!" Leonan booms as he strides past the welcoming committee.
"I'll fill you in on every sordid circumstance of our ill-fated arrival while I soak."
(Sorry for the unannounced absence. I had a bad stomach flu and just totally forgot to alert anyone here.)
The outpost - (DM RobC) Wednesday January 25th, 2012 10:43:36 PM "You're not going anywhere boy until we know what your intentions are" a stocky, older dwarf steps in front of Leonan, blocking his path. He holds an axe that appears very well used.
"Put it away Risca, before you hurt someone" Artrius speaks, stepping forward and placing a hand on Leonan's shoulder, lest the fighter do something rash "This is the group that Mr Randolph has hired. They're here to help"
The dwarf squints at Leonan but lowers his axe.
The onlookers start whispering amongst themselves as they inspect the group
"By the gods, Artrius, we were expecting you days ago!" a small well-dressed gnome who had been 'hiding' at the back of the group steps forward and goes to greet Artrius with a handshake "We had feared the worst"
The mood seems to change as the townsfolk relax and start asking questions. There is a growing sense of excitement...
"Are they here to stay, Pen?" "An adventuring group? Here to help us? About time!" "Do you think they can protect the trails?" "Better maps of the area would help too" "And the well. That water tastes foul!" "And don't forget about taking care of some of those bullies that keep coming around" "We need better security everywhere, not just in the town" "That big guy there -" pointing at Meranus " - looks like he could rip them in two with his bare hands" "I think that one -" pointing at Rexxan " - is cute. I wonder if he'd let me touch his warhammer?" "Keep it in your pants, Anna. I'll just be glad if someone can get the bleedin' lift fixed!" The last call is met by cheers from the crowd.
"People, people, please!" the gnome gestures for the group to calm down. "There will be plenty of time to go over such details. For the time being though, these people look like they could use some food and rest." he turns to address the party "Forgive the excitement, but you bring hope to us. My name is Penfold Pwent, but people just call me Pen" he goes to shake each persons hand. "I've been assigned to administer this outpost. Anything you need you just let me know. A room at the inn has been prepared for you all to share. We thought having one large room for you as a group would allow you more privacy, a kind of base of operations if you will. Please, please. Follow me"
As the townfolk disperse, you catch a beautiful blonde half-elf woman giving a wink to Rexxan as she skips away. The dwarf that had stepped in front of Leonan looks him up and down before slowly walking away.
The large gates of the outpost are shut behind you.
Pen leads the group through the outpost to the tavern "Haggard would you be so kind as to have Hope prepare a meal for our guests? Oh, and if you could open up a barrel of Bast's finest to help wash it down" Pen directs his request to the barkeep before turning back to the party. "Your room is upstairs if you would like to freshen up. Please join me back here for supper, and I would happy to give you a quick status report of the outpost before we turn in. Artrius, if you wouldn't mind, I would like a word as to why the blazes you are so late in arriving!" You sense the point to Artrius is said with humour and not ill-intent.
Artrius and Pen adjourn to a large table in the tavern.

The outpost - (DM RobC) Saturday January 28th, 2012 1:24:33 AM OOC: Thanks for reminding me about Rexxan. He did send me an email and I'd completely forgotten about it. We'll have to see how he responds to the half-elf when he gets back
The chairs all seem a bit small for Meranus but fortunately a small table nearby looks just about right to double as a chair for him. He pulls it up to the table with ease, and then settles down awaiting the drinks.
Toregan too is keen to sample some fare, and joins the forming group at the table. Tel secures a seat at the corner of the table by the wall. Experience has taught him that it will be more difficult for anyone to sneak up on him this way.
Leonan takes a moment to excuse himself to freshen up. On the second level of the tavern you find the room that has been set aside for the party. You also find a communal washroom at each end of the floor. A beautiful young woman holds a door open for you, gesturing for you to enter. "I've readied a bath for you as requested sir, though you might want to make it brief" The woman smiles politely and leaves, heading back downstairs. The water in the bath appears hot. It also appears brown and smells quite bad. Your call if you still wish to bathe before reuniting with the party downstairs...
Artrius and the elf are no longer in the tavern. Pen mentions that they have gone to see the herbalist for some further aid to completely heal the elf.
The tavern keeper brings out a round of drinks - Lost Hall's Porter. The taste isn't the dilluted swill you'd expect from a backwater outpost. This dark beer is full flavoured and potent - obviously brewed by a professional. Large trays of food are placed in the middle of the table - fruits, vegetables, breads and cakes of various descriptions. No meat or dairy however.
Once all are seated at the table, Pen stands to address the group. "Thankyou all for coming here. I understand that the journey was not as smooth as planned but let us hope that the difficulties are behind us. To better times!" he holds his mug aloft as a toast before taking a small sip. "I will be brief. You no doubt would like some time to rest, and you will likely need it. You see, this is the third time an outpost has been established in Cthonia. The last two did not survive, and I fear we may be heading down the same path" he looks solemnly into his mug "You name it and we need it. Stable trade routes, better protection, why, even a means to come and go from here would be a start! Yes, the lift will be first thing to be addressed. Tomorrow I will give you a personal tour of my outpost. You will see that the people here are dedicated, and more than capable of turning this into a veritable hub for trade. All they require is a little assistance to get there. So please, rest tonight. There will be much to do in the morning. I'll leave you now to be with my family, but Haggard our tavern owner will be here to meet your needs through the night" Pen then goes to shake each persons hand before leaving "Oh and Haggard, be sure to send a bill for all food and drinks consumed by these travellers to my office. I will cover any expenses they may incur"

"Tainted water can be filtered and cleaned, and the fact that there is a brewmaster here means they won't lack for clean drinking water as he would know how to clean the water. However, the lift is what allows them to gather resources from the forest below. Seeing as the path we came up has broken for the time being, I agree with Pen.
