DM - JC The Inbetween Time

It's just another day in WatcHaven, it had rained during the previous afternoon and into the night, a rain that was well timed for the growing of crops. Speaking of Crops, it was time to harvest the early crops and yet a month or more away from the main harvest.
Tishe` once again woke up and promptly forgot the dream that jerked her awake.

Mouse has been busy over the past few weeks, canning various vegetables and preserving meats for the leaner times during the up coming seasons. Knowing that fresh food would be hard to come by, and keeping up his reputation was important to him.
Breakfast this morning was his normal fare and was delicious.
About an hour after breakfast, before everyone split for the day to do their own thing, one of the stable boys appears at the tower and is escorted to the general room, which doubles as a dining hall.
The boy, not much older than 11 or 12, stands in front of the group.
"S-s-s-sirs and M-m-madams, ah ah ah horse sh-sh-showed up this morning in th-the st-st-stable. It has wo-wounds and wa-wa-was covered wi-with sweat. I-I-I don't know wa-wa-what to do."
He manages to get it stuttered out, and he is in full bloom for blushing a deep red.

Caedmon trots out to the stable and checks what is going on. He has never had much to do with horses as he couldn't ride so he isn't sure how to calm the animal down. If someone else calms the animal he will attempt to bind and clean its wounds.

Thar joins Caedmon in his trek and helps examine the horse in order to find out what happened to it and where the injuries originated.. His early years as a ranger gave him some valuable some experience working with equines, so he whispers calming words in its ear and gives it an apple to calm its stomach... If needed, he can cast a few healing spells to cover it's injuries.

Snafu spent most of the past five months uncharacteristically alone... that is if you don't include his pet owl Hoot. Most of the time he was in the lab dilligently working and experimenting with his alchemy. The lab itself was a complete mess; beakers were spread out across tabletops, spashes of liquid were hardening on the walls and broken glass was sprinkled across the floor. Immersed in his work, Snafu hardly seemed to notice.

Glossy eyed and hair standing on end, Snafu arrived in the general room just as Caedmon and Thar opened the door to go out to investigate. For the first time in weeks Snafu felt fresh air wash over him. It was revitalizing and left him thirsty for the outside world.

"Wait! I'm coming with you!" he said as he ran after his friends.

Revi, the owner of the Twin Tankards will gladly buy the excess beer and ale, but he can't afford to pay very much. You need to remember WatcHaven is a very poor town, where a lot of services are "traded" for. The only money comes from the Group and people who pass through that stop in town. He can offer to pay a very small portion, though he does offer drinks on the house, and a some meals as well. He offers 68 gold as well, that's all he has to spare at this time.

"A wounded horse? This bears looking into. Thar, we may need you to read any track or spoor of battle." The witch flies (figuratively) from the room to the stable to make inspection of the beast. The witch casts Death Watch to see how close to death the horse is standing. She is particularly concerned on if she has seen the horse before. "Don't horses go back to stables they are used to? Why come here to WatcHaven?"

The mercurial woman only has thoughts for the animal and what it may mean, to see if there are any saddle, bags, or other identifying marks.

Everyone but Caedmon Int roll DC 14 Highlight to display spoiler: { The Horse is Kahlan's Warhorse}

The horse is not near death, but it looks completely exhausted, like it's been run hard for a few days. It has a bridle, war saddle and saddle bags. There are a few cuts into its limbs and body, but as stated, it's not close to death, just close to collapsing for exhaustion.

Searching through the saddle bags doesn't revile very much out of the ordinary, except for a partially burned map.

Thar checks out the horse, fixes its wounds and (Int = 10 ) doesn't recognize it at first, since he's so busy trying to find out where the wounds originated..

He takes quick look at the map and can't read the writing... However, he does cast "Comprehend Languages" to understand the wording on the map. He also sees the writing on the back and tries to find out where that "Woods Edge" can be on the map... He tells the others about what he finds and takes Tishe's suggestion and says, "I think we should check this workshop out... I'll see if I can backtrack the horse's spoor and path back to the shop and see what we find..."

Your comprehend languages causes the writing to shift and move, but it ends up looking exactly the same at the end of the spell. You do find out it is Ancient Woldian, a Runic writing that was used many years ago, that once written, remains as it is unless destroyed, It was used when something was put in writing that was meant to last. (FYI: it's part of the puzzle)

Tishe' nods at Revi. "Yes, and that means Kahlan must be in trouble!" The witch finds the map and spreads it out for others to see, absently explaining to Caedmon who Kahlan is. "We were trying to break up a mysterious slaving ring when Thar, Snafu, and I first arrived in Cinnamon Valley. The search led us to a cleric of the northern god, Marteus, who was using the captured for his vile experiments. Kahlan was on an independant search because her lover, who was also a paladin, was kidnapped. We met at Skalipy's lair and was able to foil his plans and kill his second in command who was an insane werewolf, but Skalipy got away. Soon after Revi arrived, Kahlan couldn't stand us not being able to find Skalipy and so went off on her own."

The witch sits back on her haunches, not thinking about her stream of consciousness answer to the Rattledam Monk, and looks at the map and words. "I think Kahlan found Skalipy, but has been delayed." She uses her knowledge of geography from poring over the Witches maps at Witchspawn and comes up with a lead.

"We need to go to Witchspawn and consult some maps to be sure", she says, "but this looks like Mount Bone and the rivers around it that I have seen on a map of the Elennian Penninsula."

It is obvious that it is a portion of a map that's been burned in a fire, no matter what magic you try to use, the map will not decipher into common or any other language for that matter. Something is causing it to maintain the Old Runic language.
It does appear to show the region around and to the east of Shadow Mountain. The markings seem to indicate various areas, but you'll have to decipher it manually if you wish to know exactly what it has written on it.

"Well, if that is Shadow Mountain and that is Blackbird Lake", begins Tishe' as she writes each symbol beside the Woldian alphabet, "then we can use this cipher to find out the rest of the letters and words!"

It only takes a little bit of brain power before Tishe' has the three words to the east of the mountain listed as "Wind_ Hills", "Witchs_awn", and "Cul_erwood". South of Blackbird Lake reads "Acid Cit_" and south-east is "Tears Oathe Woods". West of the mountain is "Ilthmar".

And then the three arrows are labelled right to left as

"I must have made some mistakes, but I think it is clear Kahlan has found Skalipy's hideout on the slopes of Shadow Mountain." Tishe' has a light in her brown eyes; anticipating and vengeful. "I think we need to pack for a trip and go to Witchspawn to confer with the witches there before going to Shadow Mountain."

Revi was happy for some action right about now, these last months were calming--soothing in a way, but there was always that itch she couldn't scratch; Now it would be.

Witchspawn, where the Witches are that Tishe` wants to go and converse with are in the same city where you went for Catacomb's purchases, almost straight north, where as the woods obviously mentioned on the back of the map are to the south and south west. The "Great Shadow" (Shadow Mountain) is barely Visible on a clear calm day, and that is just the very tip of it, from the very top of your tower home. It is a few days journey at best, from your home.

Do you intend to go to Witchspawn or back track the horse?

Tishe' completely misses the horse's motion, and thankful that her packmates are more sharp-eyed than she. "That's right! A Paladin's horse is more like a familiar or druidic companion than a normal horse. And the wounds are fresh, so this may be a rescue and not a revenge!"

"Get your gear and let's go! Thar, backtrack Tyris' trail and we'll follow."

"Almar! Mouse!" shouts the witch and impatiently looks for the hobgoblin custodian of WatcHaven Tower. She quickly lines up the situation and where they are going. "Tell Dulcet (the resident witch of WatcHaven) and get a messenger to Kayleigh in Witchspawn (the local representative to the Pictchfork Council) to tell them the situation. We are likely to be gone for a couple of weeks."

"Mouse, some travelling provisions if you please. I know I would rather eat your food even weeks old than to rely on my own cooking!"

And with that, Tishe' dashes for her own gear. "Be ready in half a candlemark!", she calls to her packmates. The Cinnamon Protectors are ready to protect one of thier own and perhaps make the Valley and the Wold much safer if they can beard Skalipy once and for all!

As people rush about getting gear and supplies for the up coming hunt for Kahlan, it dawns on people that the wounds on Kahlan's mount are at least a week old. It made it's way here to the last "home" he knew to find help, both for itself and for his friend.
Even after healing, if it's done, he'll need at least a full days rest before being ready to go, that's how close he is to collapse, only his pure stubborn will is keeping him from dropping to the floor of the stable exhausted.

Mouse looks up as he's called and gets right busy packing up food for the travelers.

The Horse's tracks do indeed lead back to the southwest, he should be easy to track, for at least a few days, unless there's a rain storm, because one of his legs is a bit lame from his injuries.

Tishe` gain 1 hero point for deciphering the map, and keep your translations handy, it may be useful at some point. either in this module or in future modules. I have a full note book full of characters written up years ago in Runic for one of my local games. It kept people from figuring out what I had.

Thar leads the group down the path, crouching every few feet looking at the trail and not losing track of it..... He also is curious about if any other creatures seemed to be following the horse or where it might have been wounded at along the trail... He watches the sun closely, trying to get in as much daylight tracking as possible too and hopefully he'll avoid any rain...

The first day of tracking goes fairly easily, it's not super fast, but you keep a decent pace and cover about 30 miles. Making camp goes well, and Kahlan's mount has slowed the group a bit, he is still suffering from the wounds, but the rest he got has refreshed him to the point where he's not completely exhausted, even after a full day of traveling.

Please set a watch rotation, or let me know of you wish to not post a watch during the nights.

Tishe' settles into the ground eating pace of overland travel with a veteran's panache. Around camp, she weaves sleeping mats, collects firewood, washes and sews... in short, anything except cooking!

"We'll break the watch up evenly, and I'll take last watch, being a morning person anyways." An hour and a half watch each gives them nearly 8 hours of rest to start the day right.

Most of the night passes quietly, along towards dawn Tishe` catches the fire light reflecting from some animals eyes as it stares at those in the camp. After a few minutes it must have moved on, because the eyes vanish during the time when Tishe` blinked her eyes once.
In the morning after collecting the traps and alarms he'd set up, Thar finds a paw print from a big cat in the general area Tishe` had pointed out as having seen the eyes.

The Day is another fairly long day in the saddle, or on foot, depending on what race the group member is. About mid-afternoon the smell in the air changes and the slight breeze picks up to a steady wind. A couple hours later Thunder can be heard in the distance, and the occasional flash of lightning. The storm is rolling in, and it's coming in at the group in a hurry.
You might have 15 minutes before the storm rolls over the group, maybe 15 minutes.....

Snafu studied the cloud formation to try to get a better sense of what was coming.

"Revi is right... bad weather brewing. We need shelter sooner rather than later."

"Does anyone have a spell that will let us communicate at a distance? Perhaps if we all went in different directions and searched... we might have a better chance of finding shelter?"

Tishe' digs her hands through her Pants O Plenty and looks at her scrolls before making a face. "Piggies!", she says in disgust, "I knew I should have kept that Secure Shelter spell scroll for just such an emergency."

The Witch looks at her companions, a barbarian woman, an elven cleric/ranger, a monk centaur, and an liontaur alchemist. Another thought crosses her mind. "My few spells are the best we have for arcane magic. I will have to be more prudent!"

"Revi, Thar, it looks like it is up to you to find us some shelter before the storm hits. For experienced adventurers, we certainly ran off half-cocked on this one! I'm hoping that we'll get to a fair sized town where we'll at least be able to purchase a tent before we get to Shadow Mountain..."

Caedmon looks at the approaching storm with a little disdain. 15 minutes huh. I'm pretty fleet of foot. Give me a few minutes and I'll run ahead and see if I can find any shelter. Thar hears the thunder and sees the oncoming storm... After about 10 minutes of searching Caedmon finds a spot, while far from perfect, the small grove of trees a short distance to the east will probably keep most of the rain off the adventurers.
Thar finds a good amount of kindling and the others gather up some other wood for a camp fire, between them, there should be enough to keep a fire going all night.

Traveling to the spot Caedmon had located, the group gets a bit wet, but the canopy of trees does indeed let only a bit of water through to the ground. The campfire is built, people settle in, avoiding the spots that the rain comes through.
The night passes, the rain continues on into the morning, the gray clouds seem to hover just above the tree tops, making the Wold seen to shrink in on the group, in there mostly still dry campsite.

Finding the tracks proves impossible, but Tyris indicates the way. Following his indications you begin to see the woods in greater detail, the small copses of trees have vanished, most likely swallowed up by the true forest you have been headed towards for the past couple days.
About 3 hours past mid-day you come to the unofficial boundary of The Culverwood. Tyris again indicates that you should enter, but you remember that the larger woods of the Wold are not exactly normal....

The group decides that the forest is indeed alive and that killing creatures and probably hurting the trees would be bad. How bad, that's yet to be determined.
After about a half mile, the tracks of Tyris are once again picked up and followed, even with the heavy rain, the canopy of leaves protected the ground below.
There is very little undergrowth, but there are some very large trees as the group making up the old growth of the forest. There is also quite a few boulders and a few fallen trees, now timber and slowly it is being reclaimed by those trees that are still living.
The tracks seem to follow a small stream running from some where further into the Culverwood. After a couple more hours of traveling, a building can be see amongst the trees. A closer look, reveals a pair of doors that have been shattered outwards from the inside, but they still manage to keep the group from looking inside, at least until they get much closer.

I've supplied a map.... Please give me locations, and remember your character sizes. Also remember that I may need to adjust your location if you enter the building.

Revi, draws a weapon, but is not on the map because no location was given. (at most you will have 1/2 your move if you enter the map)
Thar, carefully circles the building, he sees Tyris' tracks heading towards WatcHaven, but on the west side of the building, he spots Tyris' tracks both coming and going from the direction of Shadow Mountain, far off to the west. He also spots a lot of bear tracks and some tracks from a very large, very clawed four footed creature of some sort he doesn't ever remember having run into. There is also more horse tracks and a set of wagon tracks heading to the west. There is also some sort of huge shambling tracks that seems to have brushed away most of it's tracks as well.
Getting a closer look at the doors, some of the bear tracks and the big clawed tracks as well come out of the wrecked doors and still others seem to go in and out, it may have been weeks since the horse tracks headed west.

The air and the branches as well as the leaves on those same branches have seemed to all stop making any noise, then suddenly as Thar gets back to his original position, the wind picks up and it again sounds as if the storm from the night before is again closing in, but without the rain.

It's likely that something is living in the warehouse and it's probably not going to like being disturbed.. There don't seem to be any other ways in aside from the front door...

He's a bit unnerved by the air and branches changing motion and he asks Tishe' what she knows about it...

Revi sheaths her sword digs for something out of her backpack. Shortly she produces a set fake moose-type antlers made of rough fabric, "I traded for these in a contest I attended at the Giggling Ghost a while ago and well, when I wear them I can cast Charm Animal once a day. It's not super powerful, but I could try it--and if anyone laughs, the charmed bear will make you into a snack, capice'?"

Surprising everyone, the group all gets into the warehouse and nothing as of yet attacks you. All that is seen inside the building, is a wall to the north side of the building and a couple dead carcass' in the South West corner. Whatever may have been living in here, isn't alive any more. There are remnants of some cages along the south wall, and a destroyed series of work tables, which seem to have been smashed, shredded and burnt, maybe not in that order.

The wall to the north is 10' from the outside wall, the door is 5' from the west wall. The south wall is lined with cage wreckage out to 10' or so from the wall.

Thar heads into the warehouse and heads towards the back wall, looking at and over the workbenches.
Tishe` turns towards the cages that are mangled, and sees the remains of a dead bear amungst the wreckage.
Caedmon stands between Thar and Tishe` finding the building is smaller than it looked, then again, he is larger than than he looks as well.
Snafu heads inside and finds a still shut and locked door and a subwall inside splitting the warehouse into at least two parts.
Revi stands just inside the doorway.

The first thing that is heard is a crashing sound, but no one is quite sure which area crashed first, the rear wall or the left wall (rear is west, left is south). Whichever it was, really doesn't matter, all that matters is that a pair of Land Sharks crashed through the walls, in mid-air, and one mugged Caedmon and one mugged Thar. Almost at the same time, the dead bear decides it's time to attack Tishe`. Almost as an after thought, this really big rock come crashing through the roof. (land sharks should be 15x15, I'll fix next round, west one goes north another 5 feet, south goes west 5 more feet.)

Caedmon gets pounced on, and the Land Shark rakes it's claws at him, but only gets hit two times. 12 + 13 damage
Thar has the same thing happen, he also gets raked two times. 15+ 15 damage
Tishe` is clawed at two times (crit confirmed) for 13 damage. She also managed to avoid being pulled into a bear hug, by the skin of her teeth.
The rock that comes crashing through the roof od the building knocked a good 5 foot hole in it, but managed to miss Snafu. For some reason, you don't think that it was resting on the roof and crashed through because the building shook when the 2 land sharks came crashing through the walls. Plus, you don't remember seeing it up there from back by the stream.

Letting the red rage wash over her like a hot lover's kiss, Revi took a step to her left (5' step to N8) and unleashed powerful blow after blow into the Landshark(O8) with her mighty greatsword.

"Bulettes!" shouts Tishe', "watch out for it's mighty jaws!" and then the Witch has troubles of her own as the bear nearly snares her in its embrace.

"Wart, I need a shield!", and the Cauldron at her hip hums happily as it casts Shield on Tishe'.

"Keep fighting in here", she tells her packmates, "I'm going to see who or what is throwing rocks at us!"

Her Broom of Flying still in hand, she defensively casts a Dim Door spell to appear 200 feet straight up (trusting her broom to keep her there), but as she reaches for a Ley Line, it moves and the spell fizzles!

Worried, Tishe' instead ducks behind Revi and trots back out the destroyed doors to get out of the trap.

Tishe` tries to cast her spell and it fizzles, so she attempts to escape the clutches of the bear and the bulette. The bulette hits her,(crit confirmed)It carves a big gouge with it's claw as it swipes her. (21 damage)The bear takes a swipe and misses her. She then makes it outside and sees the other shoe drop, more dead bears, a lot more. (Tishe` Perception DC 22 please)

Revi's sword bites into the Land Shark, and , it fails to bleed at all, although some stinky puss begins to flow from the cut.

Caedmon attacks the Land Shark in front of him with his bow... (rolled off line to keep stuff straight) He hits 3 times, (1 crit, not confirmed) Damage 26,37 and 28.

Thar, with his short sword out, attacks the Land Shark as well. He misses both times he tries to hit the armored beast.

Snafu ducks out the door after going invisible and as he rounds the corner of the building, he spots even more already dead bears.

Another large rock (boulder actually) crashes through the roof, landing where Tishe` had been standing, missing everyone.
The Land Shark having just been slashed by Revi, attacks her unflinchingly. Hitting her for 17 damage.
The bear that had been attacking Tishe` with it's target gone, and unable to hit Revi, just attacks Caedmon, mainly because he's in the way. missing by a large margin. The Land shark attacks Caedmon again, also ignoring the puss spouting wounds the arrows had caused. The Land Sharks bite hits (crit, not confirmed), both of it's claws miss. 18 damage.

Tishe' isn't the most perceptive person at all, and fails to notice anything amiss. Well, anything than suddenly a whole bunch of dead bears all over the place!

She pulls her Staff of Fire from her magical quiver, and, using her skill at activating magical devices, creates a Wall of Fire that encloses her and the warehouse, blocking her packmates from having to deal with lots of dead bears all at once!

(Back from vacation - thanks for watching over Thar while I was gone ;) )

IN the midst of battle, Thar is in no mood to slug it out with a big thing like a land shark... He's not sure exactly what type they are (Int = 15)...

As he sees the dead bears rise up, he's not sure if they're undead or not either... (DM - What do you want me to roll on this? Nature? Planes? Religion? My intent is to try to turn them if they're undead bears...)

Deciding to get some space, he'll take a 5' step to K6 up against the wall and then as a standard action use his boots of levitation, rising up 20' (DM - How tall is the building? He's not going to go higher than the ceiling since he doesn't want to make himself a target for the stones...)

OOC: sorry, meant to get it posted about 6, but new video card arrived and was distracted by SW:TOR

Revi carves into the Land Shark again, along with Snafu, and the beast splits wide open almost exploding with puss and vile colored insides. (Everyone within 20' of the dead land shark fort save DC 17 or become sickened, and a fort save DC 12 if with in 10' or become nauseated)

Not spending the time looking, Snafu hears another boulder hit the building, but fails to notice where it came from.

Tishe' grabs a staff of fire and creates a wall of fire, hopefully warding the group.

Thar steps back and then floats upwards 15', putting him right at about the maximum height of the building.

Caedmon fills the land shark in front of him again with arrows. Doing some serious damage, but the creature is still active, although it is leaking puss and vile stinky stuff from around the arrows, almost as if the insides were under pressure.

With a target outside the building, a rock comes crashing in on Tishe`, it hits her, causing some real damage. (32 points damage)

With one land shark dead, the other continues to attack, one of the targets moved away, but the other was still there.

The land shark has little effect on Caedmon, it seems to just miss him, by very little.

Tishe` also realizes that the wall of fire isn't having the best of effects, the bears are walking through it, and seemingly ignoring the wall of fire, and the one almost upon her is also on fire, and it keeps coming....

Bear 1 also misses Caedmon.

Revi grimaces as she's covered in goo, but nothing fazes her and decides that the bear to her right is just out of reach, but she quickly remedies that. Taking a potion of Enlarge Person from her belt, she glugs it down and doubles in size instantly (move action due to drunken brute archetype).

Yelling in anger, she reaches out with her weapon and savagely attacks the bear (used hero point to reroll attack).

Attack vs Bear1: Hit AC49, crit conf 53
Damage: 122 (vital strike, power attack, large weapon, cold energy)

If the bear still lives, it must make a DC24 Fort save or be stunned for 3 rounds. If it saves, it will automatically be staggered for 2 rounds.

Thar continues staying levitated against the wall, trying to keep just under the roof so the rocks flying in won't be able to hit him based upon their trajectory from the outside...

Hoping this will work, he decides to channel some good and holy energy in order to damage the dead bears....

Channel Energy = 30' radius from Thar, At least affects Dead Bears 1, 4 and 7 (DM - He can't see 5 or 6, even though they're within the 30'... do they get affected anyway?) - Does 18 damage, ST Will DC 16 for 1/2 dmg

The stench that filled the air did not slow the invisible Snafu (fort save 25), as he made a 180-turn and launched into a powerful attack sequence to the bear on his flank.

"You're going down... again!" Snafu spat as his weapons did their work.

Tishe' reels from the thrown stone, but steels herself to further delaying the approaching bears.

Tishe' tries to count the numbers of undead bears trying to get through her Wall of Fire as she takes a step back and casts Wall of Thorns, replicating the semi-circle and putting the wall right next to the 'cool' side of the firewall. Keeping the wall of thorns 10 feet thick, she hopes it will take a couple of rounds (and damaging thorns) before the bears can get through.

The witch then stumbles back into the shelter of the building, hoping at least the stone-thrower can't target her as she tells her packmates what is waiting for them right outside the door!

Action

Cast Wall of Thorns divine spell, no failure. 140 foot long semi-circle, 10 foot thick, 10 foot high.
Move back into the barn.
