A Visit With Goodie Bess

Co-DM Cayzle
Thursday February 2nd, 2012 7:12:02 AM

Spire wants to consult with a witch first, then raid the warehouse.

Dilantar agrees, and adds further thoughts about how to blow open a door or trick a guard into opening it.

Alphonse agrees, and invites the group to continue planning as they walk.

Baird also hopes to get good info from the witch, and thinks it is premature to plan before knowing more.

Giada is happy to keep to the group's consensus.

Yel'kno reminds his friends that the barbarians attacked without mercy. That's the kind of enemy you are facing.

You have heard that the witch lives in a swamp several miles out of town. With no roads or even paths outside of Bonetown, the easiest way there is to walk along the beach. At first, the sandy beautiful beach is as soft on your feet as a feather bed. Soon it grows wearying to walk across sand. Maybe you stroll down to the surf, and walk on the wet hard sand, sometimes getting splashed by waves. But after a couple miles, the beach ends, and a tangle of trees marches down from inland crashes into the sea, roots leaping into the surf like lemmings off a cliff.

Here is a link to follow for a bunch of images to give you the idea: https://www.google.com/search?q=mangrove+swamp&hl=en&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=Od8qT4_MDu3FsQKagqGuDg&ved=0CD4QsAQ&biw=1155&bih=871

It is a mangrove swamp, and you decide that the best way to go forward is to wade out into the surf and go around. The trees extend well into the ocean, so you will have to wade at least waist deep, if you are a human. It takes some effort, and maybe some swimming.

About a mile or two further on along the coast, into the swamp, you see a stream of rising smoke. As you struggle on through surf and roots, you eventually reach a place where the trees have drawn back from the ocean. It does not look as if they have been cleared, but more like they have chosen to withdraw, making a small beach. Here it is that you meet the witch, you think, tending her big iron pot as it bubbles over a fire above the high tide mark.

Is this the witch? How could it be otherwise? Is her nose long and hooked and warty? Why, yes. Is her back humped and broken, so that she moves slowly? She does. Is she missing a finger? An ear? Several teeth? Indeed, she is. And as she stirs the concoction in her cauldron, do her hands seem strong and powerful? Of course.

The witch straightens up, and she calls out, as if to someone in the swamp behind her, "We have guests!"

Upon reaching the clearing, Dilantar breathes a huge sigh of relief and takes a moment to rest. After catching his breath, Dilantar looks with interest at the cauldron and tries to determine what is in it. (Craft(Alchemy) Check of 24) After satisfying his curiosity, Dilantar then turns to the witch and says, "Greetings, I am called Dilantar Krenwae'afein, how are you called? Also, do you live out here alone? What is that like?" (Sense motive check of 3 for truth verification, ouch)

Rogar catches his breath. The trip out here was far worse than he thought it would be. Especially the swimming. Waist deep on a human is considerably higer on a dwarf. With all the dense muscle he doesnt swim so well either. Yet he survived which was a bonus.

ooc: I'm glad I checked. I was waiting for some type of notice that the wold was up but never recieved one.

Rogar has no real knowledge of magic or mystical things. Dilantar seemed to know more so Rogar was quite happy to let the man handle the initial introductions. He never shied away from a good brawl but something about this woman just creeped him out.

Yel'kno slogs through and lets Dilanter take the lead, glad for the chance to rest and chance his breath. He looks up at the sky, trying to judge what time it is and how long it will take to make the trek back. He'd have rather asssaulted the warehouse before nighttime when the cultist were there in force.

Dilantar greets the witch and introduces himself. He asks a couple questions and takes a peek in the cauldron. Mustering his deep alchemical knowledge, he determines with as much accuracy as he can muster that the most likely identification of the bubbling concoction is some sort of a fish stew.

Rogar sighs with relief to be out of the pounding surf. It was not easy to pass through the pounding waves, but thank goodness that, unlike many of his kin, he wears no armor. But his relief is short-lived. The witch's foul visage, her obvious deformities, and, perhaps, the prospect of further violations of nature and health lurking under her black shapeless robes, all conspire to freak the dwarf out a little more than somewhat.

Alphonse takes it all in and watches carefully.

Yel'kno looks at the sun and consults his inner time sense. He figures that the trip here took three hours, and it is now mid-morning. He thinks about how it would definitely be better to get to the warehouse during the day, when there are fewer cultists about.

Spire casts detect magic and finds that the woman is wearing or carryiong several magic items. Nothing of extraordinary power. He senses most clearly the auras of conjuration and transformation.

Baird and Giada come up last, struggling out of the surf and coming up behind. They too see the witch and hear her response to Dilantar.

"Well met, Dilantar Krenwae'afein," she says, cackling. "Now that's a mouthful of vowels, isn't it?"

She bows low to the group. "I am Goodie Bess, young man. And why do you ask if I live here alone? Would you take advantage of an old lonely woman? Of course, there are a dozen stout warriors hiding within range of my voice, and I urge you to think twice before attacking me!" She giggles as she says this.

"Come on out!" she calls behind her, as if to invite another person to join her on the beach.

Dilantar has no idea if she is telling the truth or not.

She turns back to Dilantar. "So, why do you come all this way to visit old Goodie Bess? Surely not just for chit-chat? Maybe you seek a love potion, a good luck charm, or some other trinket of mine?"

Sighs sighs, his hand moving to that familiar place to pinch the bridge of his noise and thinking, Great, the woman's gone mad out here all alone. This will be painful... He drops the Detect Magic spell and steps forward, lowering said hand. He then says, "Miss Bess, I am Spirysn'rar Kilarn. We do not wish for any potions or trinkets, we have no need for them. However, we have been lead to believe that you are a skilled scryer, and we require those services of you to locate our friend."

(Brock) Jozhur Derile
Monday February 6th, 2012 5:46:17 PM

"Hello!" a voice calls out from the trees to the left of the group.

A young human, maybe 20 years old, clad in leather armor emerges from the treeline. The man is of about average height and somewhat slightly built for a human, yet he appears very athletic. He has shaggy jet black hair that falls on his eyebrows and moves very gracefully as he picks his way out of the vegetation.

"Name is Jozhur Derile, I work with Goodie here. You've all come quite a ways, who is you are looking for?"

OOC: Hello everyone, my name is Brock. I live in the Columbus, Ohio area. I've been here about a year and I'm growing tired of living in the city, as I'm a bit of an outdoors person. Not a ton of nature to be had here without a bit of a drive. I recently graduated from college with a criminal justice degree. I'm working nights at a hotel while I look for a law enforcement job and contemplate going back to the military (or maybe not with the cutbacks). I look forward to getting to know you all!

Smiling a little at her remark, Dilantar stays quiet while Spire announces the groups purpose. Dilantar also adds at the end, "It certainly is a lot of vowels for those unaccustomed to my native tongue. If it helps, you may shorten it however you want." Turning to address the newcomer, Dilantar speaks, "Greetings Ser Derile, we happen to be looking for our friend Lansel, but we seem to have conflicting information that we hoped Miss Bess would be able to help us with." Dilantar looks hopeful of receiving assitance. Dilantar is a very dark skinned drow, who has silver eyes and short spiky hair that is also silver. He wears clothing in winter colors(dark blues, grays some black) has a backpack that is stuffed with many different things and seems to be festooned(love this word :) ) with vials of various different liquids and substances.

OOC: Hey Brock! I am Joel, affectionally called many different things(very laid back, don't generally care what I am called as long as I am aware you are addressing me) and I live with my beautiful, sickness prone wife here in Arlington Tx. I was also attempting to be the Assistant DM but I don't seem to be able to handle that, my wife, and my desk job, while still getting iin some time for martial arts and studying what feels like everything under the sun(going for a Master's in business and trying to get licence to practice acupuncture), so I will have to drop the ADM position.

"A pleasure to meet you Goodie, my name is Alphonse," Alphonse cuts in, "recently my companions and I have been involved in a scuffle, and wish to track the whereabouts of the brutes that attacked us. You've got something of a reputation as a diviner back in town, so we thought we'd drop in and see what you could do for us."

From his leather valise, Alphonse pulls a bottle of fine wine.

"Take this as a gift, freely given," says Alphonse," and consider our request."

Alphonse is a slightly tanned youth with long red hair and a small, but bushy red beard. He smiles at the old woman as he hands her the wine, the sleeves of his green linen robes still caked with dried salt from the journey. A parrot sits on his shoulder, fidgeting occasionally and looking around.

"Not to mention that anybody who lives this far out and alone has to be able to know a thing or two. I dont believe this is a kind forgiving land." Rogar comments.

Appearance: Rogar stands 4' 6" tall and a muscular stocky build as all dwarves tend to have. He wears sandals, loose brown pants, and a white sash around his waist. A long scarf starts at one wrist and coils up his arm. The scarf then criss crosses his chest several times before coiling down the other arm ending at the wrist. Rogar's head is bald and covered with the symbols of his order. His beard is trimmed into a neat gotee instead of the long traditional dwarven beard. Despite his unusual appearence his most unique feature is the stone grey coloring of his hands.

OOC to Spire: Sorry, your DM made a mistake last turn -- the witch's cauldron is definitely magical, too!

Speaking kindly, Spire explains that the group seeks to divine someone who is lost.

The witch's friend, Jozhur, greets you all and asks who you are looking for.

Dilantar says that the group seeks information about their friend, Lansel.

Alphonse introduces himself and asks the witch for information on the attackers, as well. He offers her a gift.

Rogar is impressed with the witch's ability to live out here in the wilds.

Bess laughs like a crow. "Oh, I get along," she tells the dwarf.

She accepts the wine and draws out a leather pouch, likely the cured stomach of some beast. She shakes it, and you hear a clacking. She asks each of you to reach in and draw out a token.

Within the bag are wooden disks, each twice as big as a copper, each carved with a glyph on each side. She asks you to stand in a circle, each with one hand in the center of the circle, palm up, with your token facing the sky.

Goodie Bess speaks, in a hollow voice, "The friend you seek ... I see a priest ... He is also a scribe. ... He loves books."

Her voice deepens, and she touches each wooden token with a scrawny wrinkled finger. "He is in danger ... He needs you ... You have an idea where he might be ... You must follow your intuition, wherever it leads ... You must be true to him, and go to his aid ... Those who attacked you are involved ... "

She spins around to stare at Jozhur. "You could use assistance! Take Jozhur with you, and your chances will improve!"

She pauses as if to rest, and she steps back. "Well, I hope that helps, dearies. Would you like some stew before you go? The eyes are just about done."

"I'd be delighted to stay for a bit of stew, especially after the trek out here," replies Alphonse, "and well-met indeed Jozhur. Your aid comes at a time of great need. I am Alphonse the Conjurer."

Alphonse pulls two small tufts of hair from his robes.

"Goodie, if you would be so kind as to scry on these two locks of hair, we would be most indebted. One of these men is likely in the place we're looking to go, and I'd like to see if we can get a look inside the building before we enter."

"And if you had your choice, would you scry on your friend directly, rather than on your enemies? Do you have any possession that your friend has touched or owned, or a lock of his own hair? I cannot help but think that something you could put to use would be better payment to you out here than metal coins." Yel'kno says before reaching into his pouch to pull out his Ioun Torch (worth 75 GP bought) and tosses it in to the air to spin about his head, putting out a soft pale light.

"I'll offer you this stone in payment with whatever else my companions are willing to give. As you can see.. it helps you see in the dark, but keeps your hands free. If that's acceptable, I think we want to look on Lansel himself, if possible to see his current state and location in the building he's being held in"

Yel'kno is a tall, bean pole thin half-elf with dark, jet black skin. Not like the deep purple black of a drow, but the dark black of some humans. You offer some small amount of coins, and Rogar offers a service. The witch frowns. "You are adventurers, no? You have magic items? I would take a magic item from you as a part of the price. A service would be good too, but how can I know if you will return? Maybe you will die battling your enemies. Give me a magic item as a surety of your intent to return and perform a service, and if you do not, I will take the item as my payment."

She looks around at you. "But what of the other part of my price? Do you have any possession that your friend has touched or owned, or a lock of his own hair? OOC 2: Sorry, your DM's hideous computer woes put him way behind in posting this week.

Goodie Bess doles out cups of stew in wooden mugs. As the party has a quick lunch, the question of how to pay remains.

Rogar has offered a service on behalf of the party, although the witch seems uncertain you will return.

Yel'kno has offered a glowing magical torch, of small value.

Dilantar has nothing to offer, it seems.

Giada offers an even smaller value, 25 gold pieces, but the witch smiles, as if suspecting the paladin has little more.

Spire urges haste, Jozhur dashes to grab his things, and the spotlight turns to Alphonse.

The witch scowls. "A priest in a temple would charge you hundreds of gold coins, and toss you out if you failed to pay." Those of you who were recently tossed out of the Temple of Wardd can sense the truth of her words.

But then her face breaks in a toothy grin. "But you are lucky that my temple is only a mangrove swamp, and not as expensive to keep up as a fancy house of cards and dice!"

"I will take your coins and your magic torch and your promise of a favor, and cast your spell, because I like your faces!"

She grins at Alphonse, who is already rolling up his sleeve. She draws a glass dagger and grabs his hand with her rheumy claw. "That iron is unclean," she says. She pulls him over to the cauldron, and starts casting a spell. Those of you with sufficient Spellcraft note that it is Divination, and when the spell calls for divine tokens, prayer beads, or dice, the witch cuts Alphonse with the glass dagger instead and drips the blood into the cauldron. Alphonse: you lose 1 hp.

She peers into the cauldron. The contents change into clear still water. Peering into the water you see the interior of a warehouse. Inside, a man is sitting in a chair, tied up. It is Lansel. His guards are drinking and playing cards. Two of them fall over and go to sleep. The point of view pulls back, out of the building, and you see that the sky is blood red at sunset. Actually, it is just the blood in the cauldron you see.

The magic-savvy among you know that this is not how divination spells are supposed to work.

"You have given me wine and blood," she says to Alphonse. "I like you. Try to be the one who survives and returns to tell me the tale."

"Now get there by sunset and it may still work out fine!"

Yel'kno downs the stew and makes no effort what so ever to determine what it is that's floating in it.

He watches the divination with interest and then looks to the others. "So he's alive... we should hurry back and strike before night fall."

Baird offers a further way to compensate the witch. Indeed, his repaired weapon would cancel out the party's need to return for a service. The witch accepts and cackles. "You would rather part with this fine blade than have to come back and talk with Old Bess?" She finds this hilarious. .

Spire is dumbfounded by the witch's blood magic. Alphonse is much less surprised, it seems. He tells the witch that he will come back anyway.

Yel'kno finishes his cup and calls for the group to head back to Bonetown.

Giada has a goal and is eager to be off.

Jozhur too is ready to depart

Dilantar feels his blood get hot, and he is eager to assault the warehouse.

It takes much of the afternoon, but the tide is lower, and you have no real problems. Come an hour before sunset, you are at Bonetown

OOC: Okay, whatcha gonna do?

Rogar wasnt looking forward to the long trek back but he would manage just fine. It may not be the underground tunnels of his youth that stretched for miles upon miles but the result is the same. "Let's make haste."

"I'm in favor of a stealthy approach," says Alphonse as they reach Bonetown, "I have an Illusion prepared that we could use to draw the guards into an alleyway to dispose of quietly."

"Crackerjack," he says, turning to the parrot dozing on his shoulder, "fly over the warehouse and see how many guards there are."

"Quite a journey that was back to town, surprised you all ventured out to see Goodie."

"As for these captors, stealth is fine by me, if there's a dark corner I can slip into in said alleyway, I'll put a dagger in one of their backs."

OOC: Trying the character sheet link, see if this works.

OOC: Guess not, can someone please tell me how to make that a hotlink and change the text. Thought there'd be an option if I right clicked on it. For now, that can just be copy+paste works for that url.

"We can try for stealth, but I'm thinking we'd be better serve going with the disguise and blind plan we had earlier.. and if all else fails, make ourselves a door. But whatever we do, we need to be quick about it. If our captured islander was telling the truth if we wait another hour we'll have twice as many guards to worry about" Yel'kno says after making the trek back to Bonetown.

"Let's do this quickly then. Dilantar," Spire turns to the Drow. "How long will it take you to rig up that explosive? I'll help in any way I can to speed things along. If we're going the disguise route, we'll need that potion of yours to disguise ourselves. Alphonse and I can create a distraction with our magic if necessary."

[b] rigging the bombs wont take more than a minute, are we going that route? I am up for either but we should decide quickly."
