The party seem exhausted from the battle, with blows failing to land and damage just not being done to the cythnigots.

Meranus has a rare miss with his horns, Rexxan swings wide with his warhammer, Toregan swings his rapier wildly in the air. Tel lands a sling bullet, but no damage seems to be done.

(Sorry. I caught something from my little brother and it had me out of it for the last 16 hours. Also, if Rexxan doesn't take the Aid another I will. It'll let me hit that thing. But even if I do hit, no damage. I really hate Damage reduction. It makes everything a lot harder.)

OOC: I'm sure there is a house rule that we reroll Natural 1s when healing. I can't find reference to it on the wiki though. I'll ask over in the rules board for confirmation, but until then: rerolling Rexxan's healing: D6=2. Not much better I guess. Everyone note that you are healed for 2pts, not 1.

Meranus gores another cythnigot, its vile blood spilling before the party. Hissing, it tries to retaliate, only to find itself skewered on the taur's massive horn

The rest of the party rally around, flanking the remaining cythnigot from all sides (Everyone gets flanking bonuses)

Toregan lunges again, but his attack merely scrapes against the creatures hide. He then fakes a strike at it to draw its attention, providing an opening for Meranus to strike.

The last cythnigot finally succumbs to Meranus' attacks, dropping from the air and landing on the rocky floor with a splat.

Save for the sound of running water, there is silence once again.

In the light, you can see the water seemingly running clean and freely from the other side of the cavern. It streams its way along the middle of the ground, but as it makes its way through the cythnigot nest, it turns a sickly brown colour.

Four cythnigots lie dead. One is unconscious.

What to do now?

Toregan looks around making sure they are all that's left down here before nodding at Meranus. "Yes, these thing are quite foul. I understand why I was warned never to go near the area these things inhabited. By rapier barely scratched them." He goes back to where he dropped his bow, hoping to salvage whatever he could from it. "So what should we do about their nest? I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't think touching with our bare hands it would be the best idea. After all, it is whats making everyone sick up there."

Lowering his warhammer to rest his arm and ripping the dead cythnigot's tentacles with his other hand, Rexxan says, "That was tougher than I thought. These things are hard to kill."

Then he once more emanates positive energy to heal his friends. Then he goes around checking on everyone and bandaging whoever needs it.

Tel has a closer look at the nest, and gives it a slight nudge with his foot. Without the cythnigots there, it appears there is far less reason to be concerned. The nest smells horrid, and looks to be constructed of rocks, sticks, slime, fungus, and the bones and carcasses of some small animals - all nicely packed together.

Moving it away from the stream without getting too dirty (and with the least risk of possible infection) is an awkward process consisting of a lot of kicking, prodding with sticks, and the end of weapons.

The following is found throughout the nest during its move:
12gp, 22sp, 7cp. a bell, a glass bottle, 4 fishhooks, a piton, a set of music pipes, a small yellow glass bead, 2 thick leather cords in surprisingly good condition, and a very nice looking heavy mace.

Once the former nest has been moved aside, the clean water passes uninterrupted through the cavern towards the well.

The question now posed is what to do with the nest? Yngvar suggests purification by fire, which Tel's knowledge of such things confirms would be the wise solution. Placing the corpses on the nest and setting it alight would certainly destroy the foul fungi and likely kill off any remnants of disease. Once the mini pyre is set though, the cavern may quickly fill with smoke. Best take care of anything you feel you need to before starting the fire and making your way out.

Tel grins at the discovery and starts to pick the items of interest, using the end of his sling staff, as they move the nest out of the stream and the items out of the it's brambles. After the items are recovered, he washes off the end his staff and what items he can. "Does anybody have any Art to check this stuff before we pack it away?" he adds as he reaches into his pouch and pulls out his flint and steel. "I can start it burning once were done in here."

Re: the Purify Food & Water orision
You can purify 2cu/ft per round and you want to purify a well 15ft wide by 4ft deep, plus the stream that feeds is.
You could elect to come back down tomorrow morning, but Tel's nature check tells you that with the clean water now running through and draining "somehow", it should naturally fix itself up.
Good thought though.

Oh, and in answer to Meranus' question: 500xp points, plus 60xp from earning a hero point, for a total of 560xp.

The group decides it best to spend some more time in the cavern, much to Meranus' disappointment. Save for where the water appears to be flowing shallowly from under the far side of the cavern, the only other possible point of entry found is a smooth, round hole barely big enough to squeeze a human arm into. It too is located on the far side of the carvern. Shining light down there does not give any indication of any more creatures. For all intents and purposes, the cavern seems safe and secure now.

A sense of accomplishment starts to fill the party. Have they just completed their first task in making the Cthonia outpost better?

Items gathered and all the area inspected. A quick discussion about the second small hole is had and uniformly comes to the conclusion of have someone come back and patch it with something as permanent as can be. The group prepares themselves to exit and sets the remains of the nest and bodies alight and heads out. The move to the rope and then back to the sunlit world above is easily accomplished.

Toth, Patterson and Nudge are all being cared for in the church - the alchemist shop just not being big enough nor the most comfortable place. Anna though, is nowhere to be found. Gazzy informs the party that Anna had simply overreacted to a case of indigestion and that she sent her home where she is 'resting'. Gazzy gives Yngvar a small wicker handbasket with a number of vials in it. "My way of saying thank you." she says in a pleasant voice. "I believe Pen would like to see you when you have a chance to freshen up."

The vials in the basket are clearly inscribed through acid etching in a beautiful script...1xPotion of Vanish, 1xPotion of Enlarge Person, 1xPotion of Reduce Person, 2xPotion of Ant Haul, and 2xVials of Alchemist Fire

The group agrees quickly on a couple things, they could use some time to relax and they could use a place to call home and store gear and such. Gazzy smiles and excuses herself, "A few concoctions still brewing to check on." and enters her shop and goes through to the back.

Currently the tavern/Inn is the groups home so to speak. Several rooms, suites really, are in permanent reserve. Rexxann finds no contagion or signs of any disease upon anyone. The day seems to be yours to do with as you will, save a request to stop by Pen's office for a debriefing of what was discovered.

OOC: In the interest of less slow pbp, the GM is welcome to aassume that Yngvar, having detect magic as a memorized cantrip, will generally activate it after any combat and make any necessary spellcraft checks to identify magical items. Here are a couple of rolls for this instance.

Yngvar grins at Meranus when he accidentily knocks into the wall. His head perks up at Tel's mention of loot, "Let me take a look at it..."

Yngvar takes the items one by one and turns each item in his hand a few times, pulls out his spellbook and flips through the pages to reference a spell before turning to the next item. He occasionally mumbles arcane phrases during the process.

Meranus staggers off for his suite. Five minutes later, though, the taur comes running back, his face contorted in fear. His right arm is held awkwardly in front of him, crossing to the left side of his body. His left arm is engulfed up to his shoulder in a haversack. "I was going to store some stuff in my room, and I was using this ugly thing the company had foisted on us, but I opened it, and it was bigger on the inside! It was BIGGER on the INSIDE! There's no way this should be happening! This violates every rule of reality! I should be able to feel my arms on each other right now. Why can't I feel my arms? WHY CAN'T I FEEL MY ARMS?!"

Toregan sees Meranus run to the group with his arm half absorbed by the haversack and sighs, shaking his head. "Looks like it's up to Yngvar and me to explain this to him." He turns to Rexxan and shakes his head. "I'm going to have to stay here and help with Meranus'..... problem. I might be awhile." He then goes over to Meranus and tries to calm him down. "Meranus, listen. The reason that that exists is because magic exists. God's aren't the only ones with magic, though you could say that they are the ones who gave mortals magic. But it does exist. Yngvar can vouch for me on this. He's a wizard. He's trained for his whole life on the theories of magic." This continues for quite some time, or until Meranus is convinced.

(Honestly, I completely forgot about the haversacks. And his reaction? Typical Meranus. Funny and completely justified with his form of logic. I would also love to RP this out, if it didn't involve one post a day.)

Back in the room Yngvar's detect Magic shows the flute, the small red bead, the leather cords and the mace to be magical. After consulting some of his books he is able to determine the following; The Flute is indeed magical, the small bead posses a faint aura of evocation, the leather straps glow with faint transmutation magic and the mace would hurt if it hit you.

Meranus bursts into the room screaming about his missing arm, currently inside his Haversack. Interrupting the conversation about going to see Pen.

"Many wizards have a few basic spells that can be reproduced through simple slight of hand. More powerful wizards have spells that cannot be reproduced by normal means. Yngvar, if you could, a Mage Hand spell or a Message spell from a long distance would probably be enough. Dancing Lights also might do the trick if you know it."

It leaves no trace of anything solid after it hits, it can veer around obstacles to unerringly strike its target, and it has no basis on the caster's strength."

(Logic. Destroying your world one step at a time. Except in Meranus' case where he legitimately thought everything out, without the possibility of magic.)

The Debate

The debate and reasoning continues and likely for some time and at some point simply ends. One can only argue for so long no matter how stubborn anyone might be. Any conclusions or long term realizations made will still come very slowly. Eventually the group goes to see Pen and they find the quartermaster have a light fare of fruit and vegetables with a very attractive brunette woman whose features reveal an elven heritage.

Pen and the woman stand and head to the meeting room in the back. Pen beckons you all to sit around the large wooden table that seems almost too big for the room. Pen sits in a chair where some papers are already waiting with a quill and ink. The woman sitting to his left.

Pen begins with a smile "I want to of course hear a brief on the well, but first I would like to introduce to you to Ellorah Dorwynn. She arrived about a a month ago on the last good transport I guess you could say and was recently discussing with me about employ here or setting up some type of something or other." Pen waves and waggles his fingers as he talks. "But those are not my decisions and we were rather at a stand off as I knew Mr Randolph was working on that particular problem." Pen stops to take a drink of wine sitting near him and to look at his papers, running his stubby ink marked finger along the parchment for a bit. A small tug at his beard, he continues, "She has shown me in our conversations that she is capable and resourceful and I believe a good fit" Pen looks down at his notes again and then nods, "Yes I do indeed."

Pen sits back and gestures to the woman he introduced as Ellorah Dorwynn, "It is now up to you m'lady."

There are several ways the dog could have just popped into existence, but the taur had to admit, having him name the animal first was a very good trick... perhaps it was some sort of subliminal suggestion? This mystery is certainly more deserving of his time than some new small one hanging around to get caught underfoot...

"Gentleman" she greets the party with a large smile and an outstretched hand, but then withdraws slightly "My word, that is a powerful smell! Pen mentioned you were assessing the water situation. I can only assume you 'got your hands dirty', so to speak" She has a small chuckle as she picks up nearby bottle of wine, topping up everyones cups.

"I am not here to step on anyone's toes or to get in the way. In terms of what I bring to the table, master halfling... " she says addressing Tel with a smile"... is a knack for working well with both people and, shall we say, otherwordly creatures"

Toregan gives Ellie a small smile and nod of his head. "Name's T-toregan, M-miss Elie." He'd see how this new member would hold up. She seemed likable enough, and even said that was her strength. "Probably a wizard or sorcerer then." Toregan thought to himself, noting her comment of 'otherworldly creatures'.

Pen simply sits back and lets the introductions and pleasantries take their course, making some notes on the paperwork in front of him. At Meranus's declaration his head pops up and he gives the minotaur an odd stare. "Done? We really haven't even started. We have a couple pretty big problems still to sort out. we are cut off and on our own pretty wholly and entirely. With that fun fact comes a host of issues which I will get to in a moment and some of them you all brought up yourselves. First though, I have these for you." Pen opens a drawer at his end of the table and extracts a set of silver needles.

Pen gets out of his chair and hops up on the table to be more even most and asks the group to gather about. "These are Attunement needles to the Catacombs. This post has a gate to the Catacombs but is only accessesible by one bearing an Attunement needle. I was under strict orders from quite a few of the big folk to only allow the group with Artrius from Mr Randolph to have them. So I have decided with what you've shown upon your arrival that you are what you appear and say and so I am handing them over. You simply insert them completely and voila, Attunement accomplished. that done, you will find the Catacomb entrance directly through that wall." Pen points to the brick wall to the left of the rooms fireplace.

"I'm sure you have some equipment you wish to purchase and or sell as I heard you came up with a few things. I still want to record all that you can tell me about what happened sown there and there are the other matters I mentioned as well, so I leave the order in which you want to proceed entirely up to you."

OOC: From what I've seen in the other games here, the best way to divy the loot is to do an even split for the loot and if anyone wants an item they subtract that much from the loot they were going to get. If that item is more than that, they sacrifice a portion of the loot the next time loot is divied up, and if it still isn't covered, the process goes on until they are free of debt. Seems to have worked in the games I've seen.

Toregan nods and speaks up. "The w-well was....infested. Cythnigots h-had set up a n-nest.... Burned the nest, k-killed the b-b-beasts. The water.... should be f-fine now. S-still need.... to patch t-the hole they.... made to g-get in." Turning to Yngvar, he asks, "Were any of the items we found in the nest magical? I've heard that the Catacombs can identify them for us, but they charge for it. I might be able to help out with that."

Description of Toregan for Rob: Toregan is a human of a fair height and fair build. He has brown hair, brown eyes, and tan skin with a full scraggly beard. He sports three scars on the left side of his face, coming down at a 45 degree angle from his temple to his jaw, with one going over his left eyelid. His armor is bloodstained, worn, and sports a series of large gashes. His weapons sport not a single speck of rust. His longbow is also well maintained with the exception of a number of notches on it.

Also, Rob, when the cythnigots warped my bow, was that like a wood warp spell or was it a temp effect?

At the table, Ellie listens patiently to Toregan, smiling and nodding along politely as he speaks "Cythnigots? Interesting. I wonder if.... no, nevermind". She shakes her head as if dismissing a thought.

Standing up, and still smiling, Ellie gives Meranus a friendly jab to the arm "Can't fault this one for being keen, eh?" then looking up - all the way up - at the taur "My word, I'm glad you're on our side"

Torregan gives an account of the problem and the groups solution, as Pen scribbles furiously and nods. "Well let's hope you got them all then." he states. "As to the Catacombs, yes they can certainly identify any items of mundane or magical nature. Before you try and walk through that wall though, you'll want to insert that pin I gave you." Pen stops and stares at the group for a moment or two and when to him it seems no one else has questions and input he lights a pipe and then continues.

"Seems we are all settled that Ellie will be considered part of the team and will from this point on enjoy the full rights and priveledges there of. As to the hole, not much we can do about it, nothing pernament for certain. Trading post not only has no stonemason, it's got no stone or stone working tools. Patterson is a pretty good hand with wood and has an engineers mind, so we can see if he can work something out down there. Certainly shouldn't be anything dangerous for a bit heh?"

"Which brings me to the next topic. Which is dangerous. That of securing a supply of lumber. Nothing up here is very strong or large and so not worth the risk. We need real wood and the Monkey pod trees on the jungle floor are just that. With the lift back in non manual mode, down and up should be pretty smooth. We have some stores and they are at your disposal of course and here." Pen slides a rolled parchment across the table, "Is an accounting of those supplies."

Opening the scroll lists the following in a fluid and practiced script
4 x Handaxes, Silver Dagger, Cold Iron Dagger, 2 x Master Work Cold Iron Longswords, Master Work Darkwood Spear, Master Work Light Mace, 2x Master Work Light Crossbows, 60 Crossbow Bolts, 2 x double bladed long handled axes, double handed long saw, 350' rope, 2 x blocks and tackle, 4 x pulleys

"As much as can be secured safely, I figure we could use a ton or two, others have different ideas. Questions?"

Turning back to the party she addresses the group "I have no need to visit the catacombs at the moment. Perhaps a good nights rest, and we head out tomorrow?"

DM -mis read the detect magic spellcraft of Pathfinder. The party knows thebead is a Campfire Bead and the leather ties are Mule Straps

Pen chews on his lip as he ponders Rexxan's question, "Help besides yourselves you mean? If you don't need the crossbows and bolts you could ask Haggard and or Risca. I don't think anyone else knows how to shoot. Or at least with any chance of hitting something. I'm the Post administrator. No one here holds any allegiance or fealties to me or Mr Randolph. They are here for thier own reasons, I would say most are for the excitement of a new business, frontier and freedom that comes with it."

"You're ability to get help outside of your group depends on you. I will assist where I can and fighting flying dinosaurs or any other kind is not where I can help. Frankly I suggest you get yourselves to the Catacombs, sell what you can and gear up knowing what your to face. And get those needles inserted before you try walking through that wall."

Looking over the gear Pen has made available, Yngvar smiles, and replaces his light crossbow with the finely crafted one on the rack, he also stows half the bolts into his quiver. "Never can have too many of these."

Ellie's eye briefly change to a glowing blue as she examines the items Yngvar has placed on the table. (Cast Detect Magic and use Spellcraft checks to identify: 23 & 12). She passes on any information she learns to the party.

She continues smiling, particularly with Rexxan and Meranus' banter about the wood, but doesn't weigh in on either side.

(Unfortunately, I just remembered that since I can't detect magic, I can't identify magic items. I can however aid another on the checks.)

When Ellie checks the items, Toregan adds little bits of advice for checking the specifics of their properties. He then nods at Pen and leaves for the inn, cleaning up his gear and packing them carefully away in the Mexican Bag of Holding, I MEAN Handy Haversack.
