Digging for holes Wednesday February 29th, 2012 9:59:01 PM
Having shaken off their Sealegs with a good neighborly brawl that could have included a mud wrestling match, the WLA'ers settle down for a night of planning for hunting for holes as seen in the vision of the magical wrench.
Dawn arrives and the WLA'ers awaken to the crows of a rooster that rules a chicken pen a block away, part of an enterprising couple's start in Rum as owners of an eating establishment. The rooster crows again and again and if the WLA'ers wanted to sleep in, the noise was going to keep them awake.
However a piercing scream suddenly splits the chill morning air and a rumbling noise of chaos of panicked people washes away any last sleepiness that may have been lingering in the party's eyes.
OOC: I've received a map of the WLA compound. I'm assuming everyone has also. You are split into a couple tents, unless you like co-ed living arrangements, it'll be assumed the ladies in one tent and the men in others.
Mere seconds pass from the moment the WLA'ers are fully aware of the chaos in the distance and screams errupt so close it sounds like you could reach out and touch it. It would appear that scrambled eggs are not on the menu this morning.
Bralin the Stonesinger(AC 21, 25/25 hp, CMD 15/19 v BR and Tr)) Wednesday February 29th, 2012 10:06:41 PM
Bralin goes to sleep in expectation of the group setting out to explore the ruins, but the way the morning has begun, a change of plans are in order.
The dwarf pauses long enough to don his armor before heading off to investigate the screams.
Harvest Moon (AC17/T17/F14; HP18/18; CMD 18) - Al d20+11=31 ; Thursday March 1st, 2012 8:19:05 AM
It is curious, the manner in which the planners of the League Adventurers provide two tents and designate one for women and one for men. Had they not already spent many days living together within a boat? So far, none of the men have show the signs of ones who would be rapists. Harvest Moon is very certain of that. It is one of the very first things that she made sure to determine.
So, why segregate the men from the women in such a way? Curious.
The first thought on the following morning is a mild awareness that the aches she received while grappling Libscomb of Domi, today are gone. It is a pleasant realization to waken to. Today she would explore more of the magic that she now finds herself gifted with. Would not Thelonious be surprised?
Harvest Moon sits bolt upright in her bedroll at the scream that comes from outside. She rolls to her feet and rushes out through the tent flap completely and absolutely stark naked. Harvest Moon's thin and deceptively frail body crouches in the dim light of morning. With a quick movement of her head she clears the single long lock of hair from her eyes and casts about with her keen senses for what might have caused the commotion.
DM Note: oops, I didn't mean to impose morality laws on the WLA. :) I was just stating that there were several tents set up for you guys n gals and it was my assumption, not the WLA's, that you'd not be co-ed. Gulp. I feel like a polititian appologizing for some anti-woman's lib cutting remark. HAH!

As more screams fill the air, he realizes something else is going on, and hops out of bed. Ignoring his armor for the moment, he grabs axe and shield and follows Barratore from the tent. "right behind you horn head. Let's see what this is all about."

CO-DM JonathanT - Digging for holes Thursday March 1st, 2012 10:51:33 PM
OOC: well, I've wasted an hour trying to upload the camp map to google docs. It's an excel file and it just won't load no matter what I try. :( I'll see if Stephen can send it to y'all.
IC: The WLA compound encompasses a very large lot, such that it looks like a small block in itself with narrow streets on all sides. The WLA'ers awaken and hustle outside their tents alarmed at the noise of confusion and chaos.
A quick glance and it would appear that the whole settlement has errupted. However the loud scream you heard nearby came from the street on the opposite side of the one shared with Sculliy's Heroes.
The first thing you notice is a gaping hole in the ground uncannily like the one in the vision of the previous day! The other thing you notice are what appear to be very large spiders the size of ponies scurrying out from the hole!
While the WLA'ers gather their wits, it is seen that one spider vanishes back into the hole, carrying someone!
There are four other spiders visible out and about at this point and any one of them can be reached within one round (two moves). These four are attemping to grab someone.
To Harvest eyes only: Highlight to display spoiler: {Your keen eyes, or the fact you are so close to one, reaveal the shocking horror of these spiders. For are they true spiders? They have the body of spiders but where the head should be a humanoid torso extends, much like that of a centaur, but unlike the human-like centaur torsos, these torsos are of various races, including a goblin!}
The entire time (that is the few seconds of time that the party has to observe the chaos first hand), these spiders seem to be screeching, or howling in pain as they attempt to grab people.
SteveK: I'm comfortable with Excel, but it doesn't upload to google docs. What I have been doing is taking a .jpg of the battle each day and then uploading that!

OOC: here's the battle map for Round 0. It is what you see when you scramble out of your tents. The tent entrances face the center of the compound.
I don't know what spells were used in the street brawl, but if you've depleted your repertoir, I don't want to penalize you for it by not giving you a chance to use them in this battle, so it's up to you to decide what spells you have available. ie. Hey, I always wake up before the rooster crows... etc.
I don't have grid coords here but I wanted to get it up tonight. So place your guys using the numbers in the toolbar, or like "5' from Red spider in square between Red Spider and Hero Tent 1".
We can adjust later if necessary.
I'll get back here tomorrow when you've placed your guys and update the post.

Concentrate your attacks on one, kill it and move on to another. We don't want a whole bunch of injured ones getting away, healing up and coming back again!"
Gerox follows his own advice and waits to see if Barratore's spider falls. If it doesn't fall, he will magic missile it doing 4 points of damage to it. Combat Round 1:
Harvest, who pops out of her tent the closest to one of the spiders, notices that where the 'head' of the spider should be there is a humanoid torso extending out. Yelling out Go Away!, she tries to emphasize her point by rushing up to the closest one and trying to smack it hard. All she accomplishes is to get the spider-goblin's attention.
Crag, dedicated cleric as he is, was already up and had spent time in meditation to his deity. (OOC: see DM note in your second post). He instinctively casts his Enlarge Person spell on Barratore when he sees what they are up against.
OOC: Good time to remind all to update your headers if you are not going to take the time to put on armor. Look at Equipment-doning armor table to see if your type takes 1 min or 4 min, or less if donning on hastily.
Barratore instantly increases in size as he spies a spider-oid and charges it, issuing a great bellow as he rushes forward. His mighty swing slices a big gash clear across the torso from top to bottom, humanoid guts spilling out. The spider creature tries to hold them in with one hand.
Bralin rushes a spider-oid that's about to grasp a Rumanite, axe poised to lop off something. DM note: I'm going to assume you ran around the 'long way' and used up two moves. :}
Lemick tries an indirect approach at dealing with the problem and tries to scare the abberrations into leaving by casting Cause Fear. He could target the one right in front of him (pink) but that one's already holding his guts in, so he targets the only other one in range of the spell, the green one that Bralin is menacingly waving his axe at.
Peza does what she does best, points her crossbow at the first one she sees and pulls the trigger. The bolt goes wide this time, though.
Brom sees he can reach the same spider-oid that Bralin went after and does the same. The Spider-oid, already alerted by Bralin, manages to dodge the barbarian's swing just in time and avoids the blade. (OOC: I'm assuming BAS is a sword?)
Gerox wisely suggests concentrating attacks, if possible, to bring any individual one down as fast as possible to keep them from scurrying away and healing up. Seeing that Barratore's opponent is on the verge of expiring but still alive, he fears that it may manage to scurry into the hole since it is very close to it, so he casts his Magic Missile spell at it. The little energy orb smacks it in the bloody split chest and it collapses with an agonizing scream.
With everyone now out of the tents and into the street engaging a swarm of spider abberrations, the WLA'ers can see more of their surroundings and... more of them, of course.
Just as your compound and Sclully's compound have tents, the lots around you also have tents, and the spider-oids are either chasing individuals that were already out-and-about or trying to rip a tent from its pegs and get to who's inside. One is coming out of the hole.
They easily recognize the death-scream of one of their own and turn their attention to you. Ooops.

Green Spider-oid is overcome by the Cause Fear and does what such creature would do when overcome by fright. He tries to get away as fast as possible using the best means available to it. Instinctively it rears up and points a small protrusion from his bulbous rear and shoots a glob of webs at Bralin.
Range Touch Att hit AC19-2=17. If this beats your Touch AC, then your are Entangled: The character is ensnared. Green Spider-oid then makes a hasty retreat to his hole. Brom, Bralin, and Barratorre get AOO on it as it leaves their threatened squares. Harvest Moon (AC17/T17/F14; HP14/18; CMD 18) - Al d20+6=16 ; d20+10=18 ; Tuesday March 6th, 2012 8:42:39 AM
Her rashness is now apparent. She had come out of the tent without her equipment. She had rushed to repel the invader in the same way she would have at home, in the Contested Kingdoms, where surprise and bravado and sheer fierceness of appearance might have saved her from a serious fight. This place is different. Here, she must work with her fellow League Adventurers as they had done on the ship, as they had done in the land of the Wemics, as they had done at South Port. In an instant this is all quite apparent to Harvest Moon.
The dark poison invades Harvest Moon's blood, but even without conscious direction, her body fights. Her body fights the poison. And it wins.
Harvest Moon herself growls at the two spiderkin who have come to attack her. The voice of Peza from behind is a comfort. She would stand against these spiderkin. She would protect Peza. But there is a better way.
The spry half-elfish girl feigns to her left before springing into a backwards roll that brings her up beside her friend Peza. She will call upon the power she had used just the day before. The spiders will be divided. They will be stopped from carrying anyone else down into their hole. They will be stopped from emerging to attack.
"We will send them away, Peza," says Harvest Moon just before she calls upon the fury of the plants. The grasses rise up. They rise up to grasp anyone in their midst. It is good to have allies. It is good to have friends.

Round 2:
Barratore wrangles with a glob of pesky webs and manages a feeble swing with his sword that the spider-oid easily avoids by ducking under it.
Peza takes aim once more with her crossbow. Her aim is better this time but the second spider-oid must have spoiled her shot. The bolt grazed off the back of the middle body segment of her target and went rickochetting into a tent across the street. She also calls out to any WLA camp servants to go over to Scully's. A rather brave cook's assistant darts off across the street while the cook stands firm at the Dinning Tent, meat cleaver at the ready.
Gerox's ball of fire manages to zip through eight scrambling legs and miss them all ending up bursting into the tent across the street leaving a circle of smoldering scorched canvas. (OOC: at least 1pt of damage didn't catch the tent on fire.)
Crag blesses all and moves closer to the fight.
Harvest manages not only to shake off any poison effects, she nimbly tumbles and rolls out of their grasp, for now. She then casts a her own version of entanglement. Grasses and such that have not been cleared or trampled into mulch suddenly reach out in revenge to ensare those cruel feet that dare pass by. DM note: I always thought they grew, but according to the spell description, there has to be vegetation already there for this to work. Not a problem here as I'm sure there's enough shrubbs and grasses and such. Just thought i'd throw that out to ya.
Brom also shrugs off the poison effects and brings his BAS around slicing off a spider leg or two. It still stands, though. DM Note: i forgot the DR so you did ok in subtracting it yourself.
Lemmick feels immense joy in seeing the creatures fall about him and tries to add his own sweat to the frey but his weapon gets caught in a tent rope and needs to roll a STR check DC10 or have his weapon knocked out of his hand.
Bralin despite the sticky goo he is in, mangages to drag himself forward and take a swing at Grey Spider-oid. The spider webs covering him slow his swing down enough that Grey Less-Two-Legs Spider-oid avoids his axe and saves a leg.
Despite horrendous losses in the first round of combat, anger, or pain, or both, or neither, keep the spider-oids pressing their attacks.
Their turn: Grey Less-Two-Legs Spider-oid tries to avoid the barbarian and scuttles around putting the webbed Bralin between him and that sharp blade. Red Spider-goblinoid attemps to avoid being entangled, Ref DC15= 22, avoiding the tree and tries to outmaneuvre the two females by going around the tent and coming up from behind, whereas he finds a third enemy coming to help the two females.

She could escape. The spiderkin are all around. She avoided them before, she could do it again. But Peza would be alone. Peza would be trapped. She will not leave Peza. Even if it means her own death.
"Come, Peza. We must withdraw," urges Harvest Moon. The impulse to turn and tug at her friend's sleeve is nearly overwhelming. But that would mean turning her back on the spiderkin.
Tucked into a defensive crouch, Harvest Moon inches her way backwards to a more defensible position next to Crag Hammerfist. Growling all the while, she lashes out at the spiderkin to the south of them (RED), hoping to distract it and provide Crag Hammerfist with advantage. In her concern, however, for Peza and their defense, though, the distance from the spiderkin is unclear. Harvest Moon does little but wave a naked arm through the air.

Round 3: Barratore feels slightly weaker due to the poison of one of the spider-oids. A wild swing shows the wold that he needs to practice combat while in a net. Good thing Scully wasn't watching.
Effects: web and poison x1 (1/4 rnds.)
Peza keeps trying to peg a spider-oid with her crossbow. She seemed to have not yet gotten the feel of solid ground and is used to compensating for a rolling ship as her bolt catches another tent. She then steps back to be in line with Harvest.
Harvest steps back to prevent herself from getting flanked and tries to distract the Spider-oid to give Crag a better chance to hit. A good idea, but she needs a bit more practice. On the other hand, she concentrates more on not getting hit rather than hitting.
Crag manages to swat some air as the spider-oid lifts a leg out of the way of his swing.
Bralin's dwarven constitution easily shruggs off the poisen effects of the spider-oid and by a dwarven's hair of his chin manages to connect with his axe ending it's miserable hiddeous existence. A loud horrible screech verberates through the morning chill as it falls in a bloody heap.
Effects: web
Gerox finds it easier to aim his little ball of fire at two attackers in hopes of hitting one of them and smacks one square in the chest. Burnt flesh and hair permeate the air.
Brom skips by Bralin now that that one is dead, evades a few twicthing legs, and goes to help Barratore, booting the Blue dead spider thing out of the way. His swing misses.
Lemick has a tough time with a tent rope and looses his weapon. Knoing that trying to pick it up will expose him to a free attack on him, he opts to give a Bit of Luck to Barratore instead, hoping the minotaur will roll a 20 next round.
The heros continue to dwindle them down but have a bad time with combat this early in the morning. It seems it would have been better if the cook called a time-out and passed some coffee around.

Round 4:
Gerox plays it safe, sending a Magic Missile that can't miss. The energy orb stings the Spider-oid but does not fell it.
Crag tries in vain to aleviate their situation. It's hard to hit those legs! Any eight of them!
Bralin drags himself to a position right behind Brom. Note: don't forget you can try to break the webs with a Str check as a Move, DC12.
Barratore manages to fend off the effects of the poisons swiming in his blood veins, but still hasn't mastered fighing in webs yet.
DM Note: BTW, they are AC16.
Lemick takes the opportunity to heal Barratore some, making sure he does so discretely and not provoking an AoO. He succeeds marvelously in this, giving the minotaur some much needed healing.
Blood and guts from all the dead spider-oids hamper Brom and he misses. Sooo close...
Harvest tries to get her two friends to form a better defensive perimeter by moving to the 'alley' between tents 2 and 3 so Peza can get behind her and Lemick and use her crossbow with less danger to herself.
Peza however, missunderstands the monk's intent and instead tries to gain the other side of Violet spider-oid. (OOC: Note, I'm rolling for AoO on its turn, however in your next post, if you roll an Acrobatics check and beat my CMD+5, then we ignore these results.)
DM Note: The Move to H12 is a Move action, the cranking of crossbow is a Move action, thus you cannot shoot it. Also, don't forget that missile fire within a threatened square provokes AoO.
The heros still struggle (I can't believe the bad rolls you guys are getting!) and the fight continues. A yell from the cook's aid alerts the company that Scully's guys are just as busy as you are with their own spider-oids.
Their turn: Yellow spider-oid attempts to squirt Brom with webbing again, Range Touch Att Hit AC22 engulfing the barbarian in webbing. The character is ensnared. Being entangled impedes movement, but does not entirely prevent it unless the bonds are anchored to an immobile object or tethered by an opposing force. An entangled creature moves at half speed, cannot run or charge, and takes a --2 penalty on all attack rolls and a --4 penalty to Dexterity. You may try to break the webs with a Str check as a Move, DC12.
Yellow then move 5' closer to Brom ready to munch on him next round.
Brown is fearful of that big blade swinging over its head knowing any moment it'll finally connect, so it bites at Barratore, Hit AC 15, dmg 2 and: Poison effects: save Fort DC 14; frequency 1/round for 4 rounds; effect 1d2 Strength damage; cure 1 save. Loose 2pts of strength on failed Save.

Unlike the others, though, the tent walls form an anchoring surface, effectively pinning Peza in place.
Red strikes out at Crag, a no-brainer there, hitting AC18, for 4 pts damage and: Poison effects: save Fort DC 14; frequency 1/round for 4 rounds; effect 1d2 Strength damage; cure 1 save. Loose 2pts of strength on failed Save.
Lastly, Cyan tries to break free from the tree, STR Chk DC15 = 16, he finally wiggles his way free from the grasping branches and moves behind Purple to back him up.

Gerox is terrified of being carried away. He doubts he would even make a good snack for the big spider nasties. Still he has to do something to help his friends, so he faces his fears sort of. He tries to crouch low against the tent so they won't see who is killing them and launches another beam of flames at the pink one hitting touch ac of 14 for 3 points of damage. He then ducks back breathing heavy wondering what he should do if Barratore falls.

No! Aghast. Simply aghast. Through her foolish advice, Peza is now in trouble. It seemed like such a good idea. "I am coming, Peza," calls Harvest Moon.
The small half-elfish girl calls upon the power of the Wold and her fists harden, her nails become sharper. She springs from between the tents and fetches up beside Crag Hammerfist.
"Foolish Spiderkin, you cannot attack me," she taunts. "Try to attack me. I dare you. You cannot do so. You will miss."

What a twist of luck, first a fumble with his morningstar with the tent, and now the frayed and loosened ropes save him from poison.
Still, there is no need to temp fate. Retrieving his morningstar would now be tempting such fate. Reaching into the tent to grap his javelin would be tempting fate. This forces him to draw a short dagger in the hopes of slicing a leg off.

Round 5: that would be only half a minute of combat so far...
Gerox continues to whittle away at Pink Spider-oid, this time with another burp of flame. He does not stay to see the effects, but ducks away. The little guy has been able to stay well out of harms way. Pink spider-oid is looking pretty bad, and smelling very singed.
Harvest is aghast at having left her friend to fight the spider-things alone due to the fog of battle. She calls forth super-natural power to harden her fists and springs forth to engage them again.
Crag, perhaps bolstered by his hardy blood fighting a winning battle with the poison, finally manages to connect his axe blade with something fleshy of his enemy. Badly wounded, it still stands.
DM Note: Start advertising on the L&B for someone to play Crag while you are gone. That'll give whoever time to make sure he/she can see your ChrSh and ask any pertinent questions.
Lemick tactically draws his dagger and takes a jab at Pink spider-oid, but it must have jerked back at being hit by flames and Lemick slices air.
Peza, now firmly stuck in webbing, tries first to break loose but fails. DM Note: I made a booboo, I stated that it was a Move action to break out of the web. Correction: It is a Move to break out Entangle, but a Standard Action to break out of Web (as per the Univeral Monster Rules: Web. So from now on it'll be a Stand. Act.
Peza, unable to break out of the web, decides to shoot the darn spider despite being too close for comfort. (Missile attack within a threatened square provokes AoO). Her bolt imbeds deeply into the Purple spider-oid's chest. It burps blood.
Brom, feeling that the battle has lasted way too long already, goes into a rage, breakes the webs with a mighty heave (See note above for breaking the webs after this round), and swings his sword around with vehemence. However his move was anticipated and the barbarian vehemently missed.
Barratore feels the healing course through his taur body. Invigorated by that, he takes out his frustration on Brownie, splitting its skull.
Bralin also manages to burst his bonds and puts some more healing into the minotaur.
DM Note: there was a clause way back at the beginning: ... Attempts to burst a web by those caught in it suffer a --4 penalty. but i've ignored it due to the fact A) the webs only have 2hp and you guys have been wrestling around in them now for several rounds, which probably has broken a number of strands, and B) I forgot to keep adding the clause as a reminder, and C) I'm such a nice guy. :)
Their turn: time to get mean again... :P The spider creatures continue fighting as if in a crazed rage, screaming and howling in anger and pain, bitting and mauling and dribbling poison, and some blood from wounds.
Crag and Harvest from an impenetrable wall and Red and Cyan spider-oids just lash out. Red, injured, decides to shoot webbing at Crag, Range Touch Att AC19 and the dwarf becomes encased in webs. Updated webbing rules from Pathfinder: An entangled creature can escape with a successful Escape Artist check or burst the web with a Strength check. Both are standard actions with a DC 12. Attempts to burst a web by those caught in it suffer a --4 penalty.
Cyan Spider-oid takes advantage of Crag's new predicament and ignores the nude female chomping down of the dwarf, Hit AC 18 for 8 dmg and: Poison effects: save Fort DC 14; frequency 1/round for 4 rounds; effect 1d2 Strength damage; cure 1 save. Loose 2pts of strength on failed Save.

The Purple spider-oid's own webbing keep it from bitting poor Peza. It presses its attack, though. Hit AC 7. The bolt sticking out of its chest is just too painful for it to bend over and bite down. How sad. Sniff.
Pinko, smouldering, ignores the puny dagger and lays into the giant minotaur, Hit AC 18 for 3 points and: Poison effects: save Fort DC 14; frequency 1/round for 4 rounds; effect 1d2 Strength damage; cure 1 save. Loose 1pts of strength on failed Save.
Yellow lurches at Brom hit AC 18, doing 8 points of damage and: Poison effects: save Fort DC 14; frequency 1/round for 4 rounds; effect 1d2 Strength damage; cure 1 save. Loose 2pts of strength on failed Save.

Round 6: Harvest Moon lashes out to protect her friend. Her hardened foot penetrates the spider shell and damages an internal spider organ. It's death a surprise to itself, it doesn't even have time to screech before it crumbles.
Gerox heroically launches another magic missile at Pink. It smacks the creature in the burnt flesh of it's chest. It reels in anguish and pain. Somehow, it still stands, albeit on eight wobbly legs. Gerox then moves to the end of the narrow 'alley' to see how his other friends are doing.

It is good to see Peza now out of immediate danger. The task now becomes to drive away these spiderkin. With bullies, first strike the biggest and the others will lose heart. With many undifferentiated enemies, one must inflict harm upon as many as possible as quickly as possible in order to give them collective pause.
Harvest Moon sacrifices accuracy for speed. She ignores the one who had just lunged at her, and with a quick flurry of punches she attacks the wounded spiderkin who had just bitten Crag Hammerfist. If this one might be brought down, the lone remaining spiderkin might find its nerve shaken without its fellows to stand beside it.
The first quick punch sweeps through nothing but air. The second, however, strikes the spiderkin's hard shell with force. Whether it will be enough to penetrate and bring down the creature, however, is yet to be seen.

Round 6: finishing up. Lemick takes advantage of the collapsed Pink Spider-oid (OOC: it had 0hp when it struck Barrator) and finishes it off with his dagger.
Round 7: Lemick takes a step back and looks around. The Pinko does not move, so he does not need to throw his dagger.
Crag unleashes his fury and knocks the Red Spider-oid a slash that sends it reeling.
Bralin sees it is futile to chase after Yellow and heads to the other sounds of battle.
Peza, now free from the webs, and free to use her crossbow safely, sends a bolt into Cyan's back. Man, that smarts!
Barrator fends off another bout of poison. Now, with no attackers on him, he tries to break free from the webs but the sticky goo is just all over him and sticking to his fur and what a mess! He then wades through a pile of dead spider-oids towards the wrangling mass of vines and weeds that surround the hole in the ground. Note: I moved you 15', your 1/2 move rate. If it is more, I'll adjust.
Brom also wisely does not chase after Yellow and heads over to aid his friends.
Gerox takes a few steps closer and is startled by Brom rushing between two tents right at him. "Haha!" laughs Harvest Moon, and is near to throwing an admonition at the retreating back of the spiderkin, when it occurs to her that this is very mysterious. What are such creatures as these? Who have the bodies of both spiders as well as creatures of many other races? The hole at the corner is there, just as in the vision shown by the Fixers. There is another battle here. It is a battle against a mystery. And, perhaps, if they were to capture one of these spiderkin alive, it might be questioned. It might have answers. And these answers might dispel the mystery.
The laugh of Harvest Moon turns into a charge. Tucking her head, she flies at the entangled spiderkin. Harvest Moon skids to a stop just before the edge of her writhing plants, and throws a punch loaded with the momentum of her movement. This punch, however, strikes only a spot of soft flesh. It is designed to bruise without breaking. It is designed to drive the spiderkin into unconsciousness where it might later be waken and asked many questions.

She responds to the idea of Crag Hammerfist with a nod, and then kneels at the side of the spiderkin and drives her fist once again into its flesh, ensuring that it will not come awake at any soon time.
"I think that we must soon follow the spiderkin down their hole," Harvest Moon opines. Her words are for anyone who might hear. Her eyes roam over the body of this incredibly curious creature unconscious before her. How can such a creature be? She examines the torso of the spider, the torso of the other creature, and then she examines the juncture between. "They have captured some of our people. We must follow and free them," she adds.
Harvest Moon stands, thin and white in her nakedness. Her body has filled with the abundant food provided daily by the Woldian League, but her form remains thin, a sign of her elfish heritage. She lifts an arm to wave away the field of angry plants. But the spell ends by itself, and, with caution, she approaches the hole from which the spiderkin had come.
Had they tunneled to this spot? They must have. There were many. They were well prepared. They seemed to know very well what it was that they wished to do. The spiderkin did not casually come upon this hole.
Crouching at the lip of the hole, Harvest Moon examines the ground, the hole itself, and the interior of the hole lit by the growing light of the morning sun. Did the spiderkin leave behind digging tools? Or do they have the hearty claws to dig as the animals do? How far did they come? Did they dig far? Or are there natural caves nearby below?
It is dangerous to enter a hole even when it is not occupied. To enter the lair of the spiderkin will be very dangerous indeed.

CO-DM JonathanT - We have a hole, now what? Friday March 16th, 2012 9:11:19 PM Lemick's deep concern for his friends safety compels him to send a healing burst to all around. However, just looking at a colapsed enemy to determine whether it is dead or not is not the same as checking for a pulse.
The healing burst also heals the lone survivor enough to bring it back to consciousness. Quick action by Harvest and the fact it is still caught by the tree, keep it from scampering away. It's brief moment of consciousness was only long enough to enable a horrible screech to be sent across the town.
Eventually the Eentangle spell wears off and the menacing tree reverts to its normal placid nature, safe once more for birds to find shelter and build nests. The Spider-humanoid thing remains unconscious on the ground near the first tent.
While some of the WLA'ers go looking for Scully's group, others head off to offer their assistance to the rest of Rumtown.
As much of Rumtown was under siege, the fact that most of Rum's new residents are used to hard life, adventure, danger, and such, otherwise they'd not have come at all. So as bad as it may have seen when Chaos reigned, Rumtown as a whole, did not fare too bad. Not that that is any consolation to those who lost family members.
Scully's group seemed to have fared much the same as the WLA'ers. Their tales, of course, are of great heroic deeds and that these spider monstrosities were no match for their prowess. Believe what you will, but at least they are all alive to tell their tale.
Harvests' assessment of the hole reveals some interesting facts. It is clear that the spider-oids do not have the digging capabilities like a badger or mole, or bullette, but the tunnel portions that she can see have clearly been dug, although rather crudely and not with the expertise of dwarven miners.
It is also clear that from the hole, the tunnel runs two ways. That is to say, the hole is not the end of the tunnel. Inspection of the other holes reveal the same thing. Also, by the look of it, from the dwarven perspective, these tunnels are not new. It would appear that the network of tunnels have been here a while and Rumtown just happened to be founded right over them.
The mystery of the holes becon the WLA'ers into its depths. Are they game to plunge into that darkness and search for the answers to the puzzle?

Besides we are a mercenary group." He starts waving his hands at Harvest's look, "Of course we only fight for just causes but why don't we allow the leaders of this town to hire us to go trekking into that tunnel. "I think that Gerox Shale is right, Brom," calls Harvest Moon as she crabs around the edge of the hole, peering down into the tunnel below. "We must remain in order to discover what the captured spiderkin will say. I think it best also to know what the Fixers might say of this as well."
"But why, Gerox Shale, would not the Spiderkin have treasure. I do not believe them to be animals. I think that they were created. Perhaps from magic. Someone or something must have created them. They will have treasure." Or so says Harvest Moon with a naive certainty. Then, "Are we mercenaries? I do not think that I would like being a mercenary."
Before receiving an answer, however, the naked girl hops down into the hole and begins an examination of the tunnel floor. It would be good to be able to present to the Fixers more than the single spiderkin. With the age of these tunnels, surely other creatures have left their tracks. Or, at the very least, the tracks might reveal the numbers of the spiderkin or the direction of their travel. With eyes to the ground, Harvest Moon begins a thorough examination of the floor.

CO-DM JonathanT - We have a hole, now what? Tuesday March 20th, 2012 11:16:36 AM
OOC: sorry for the missed post yesterday. We had storms coming through and power outages. It's been raining and thundering since 6pm last night. Didn't want to turn on the PC and get something fried. :}
IC: People are out and about everywhere. Healers and Fixers searching for the wounded and the holes in the ground sealed up. During all this, our WLA'ers have a philosophical discussion on Mercenary vs Non-Mercenary and armored vs non-armored.
Harvest Moon promply jumps down into the hole and studies the surroundings with what little light manages to eek down. The rubble from the collapsed ceiling provides easy access to and out of the hole.
Harvest is joined by a couple of her companions concerned about her safety. Who knows what else is waiting in the darkness beyond the entrance?
The tunnel, going in two directions from the hole, is wide enough for a medium sized person/creature to comfortably navigate, a squeeze for two. Harvest's investigations reveal tracks that are obviously from the spiderkin, but mixed in there are also some smaller prints, shape and size akin to goblinoids. Neither appear to have a specific direction, as all tracks seem to be both coming and going from the perspective of the hole.
A call from above brings the investigation to a momentary pause.
"Ahoy down there!"
Torian's head pops over the rim. "Get your group together. We have something to discuss."
While the three climb out of the hole and the others begin to gather, Torian inspects the unconscious but still untied spider-oid.

After climbing out of the hole, Harvest Moon informs the other League Adventurers of the small goblin-like footprints. After that, she retires to the tent that she shares with Peza to clothe herself.
The trouble with her newly redesigned clothing is that they must be tied and adjusted about herself. The old robe, from which she had constructed them was so much easier. It need only be slipped over her head.
Harvest Moon sighs. After dressing she emerges once again, bringing with her, this time, the new polearm.
"Pardon me, Torian." The rope might as well be of some use. Crag moves in on the unconscious body of the spider-thing. Not a natural creature. So Harvest had said. Now, up close to the thing, it wasn't difficult to believe.
"Let me tie this one up, eh? Wouldn't want this beasty waking all a sudden and running amok again."

Torian is amazed that one of the spiderkin was captured and congratulates all of them for their excellent work done in protecting Rumtown from these strange creatures. He states that the leaders will be very pleased to have one to interrogate.
"These things may have something to do with that evil feeling the diviners have been having. We certainly need to investigate these tunnels and find out where they lead and the source of these creatures."
Torian states that the leaders will be getting with the rest of Rumtown to investigate all the tunnels. "It will be up to you and Scully to investigate this one. One group go one way and the other group go the other way," he states. "I'll have fixers cover up the hole for the time being so you have a day to recover and rest. Tomorrow the fixer will uncover the hole for your scouting party. Although the holes will be covered, I'd advise have sentries out tonight just in case. Y'a never know."
The WLA'ers may ask Torian any questions and may even want to heal the spiderkin enough to interrogate it themselves. In the end, though, several Rum authorities show up and teleport the spider-oid to their new headquarters on the island in the bay for futher interrogation.

Then she tips her head to one side, a look of consternation coming over her face.
"Will you harm it?" she asks when her head rights itself and she once again looks up into the elfish face of Torian Silverleaf. "I do not know whether it ... he ... is a thinking creature. But I think that it is not born as others are. Perhaps it would be best to destroy it. But quickly. And with mercy."
Then, after mulling the things that she knows of this strange incident, Harvest Moon asks, "Also, please, Torian Silverleaf, could you enquire of Bard Pursis as to what creatures with small feet as those of goblins, might live underground in such tunnels as these. Barratore finds something to drink and then a spot in the shade. Everything that will happen from now til morning is not really of interest to him. His concern is the tunnels, the tight spaced cramped tunnels. There was little room to move let alone to fight. He would almost certainly need to play rearguard. Else no one would be able to see anything. With a shrug he mentally accepts the less the exciting role, who knows perhaps Sculley mercanaries would try something. Barratore tips his tankard, he could only hope so...

Crag wisely ties up (taking 10 or 20 or whatever he needs) and then casts a healing spell to affect all around him including the spiderkin.
The Spider-kobold combo awakens with the healing effects. It immediately realizes it is tied tight. Wide-eyed, it sends out a sickening ear-splitting screech.
Crag's interrogation techniques seem rather innefctive for the moment. Either the kobol-spider can't understand Crag or isn't inclined to speak. It struggles against its bonds then lets out another screech.
Lemick has about as much luck as Crag. It looks up at Lemick with big kobold eyes in some form of supplication before it screeches.
For those familiar with kobolds: Highlight to display spoiler: {These screeches are pretty much the same you heard from the other ones despite being of different humanoid races. Rather odd for a mix of humanoid speech types.}.
Harvest is assured by Torian Silverleaf that the treatment of the spiderkin will be as humane as possible. "But Harvest, some creatures are just too far gone for us to help. Either they've lost their minds or they are totally corrupted to evil. However, you do understand the importance to Rum to find out who or what is doing this. Kobolds don't naturally breed with spiders, you know." He says the last with a worried smile.

Torian Silverleaf agrees with Peza. "That is the plan, dear Peza. Tomorrow at daybreak, all the adventuring groups will enter the tunnels together, in pairs, and head in opposite directions. Those that meet each other will return to the their respective openings and the fixers will then collapse that tunnel section, knowing there is nothing else there to see."

Two small words that catch the sharp elf-born ears of Harvest Moon. Inconceivable. See hopes that these words do not mean what she thinks they mean.
"Torian Silverleaf?" Her question is tentative, and she is not entirely certain that she wishes to know the answer. "You do not mean that you wish one of us to pair with one of the Leaper men and enter the tunnels the two of us alone. Do you?"

"Alright. Alright, quit your crying there." Crag takes a new tack with the half-kobold half-spider. His voice becomes more gentle, more patient, more diplomatic. "Listen, we'd like to know who did this to you. I'm sorry, for all I know it's too late for you. But we could stop this from happening to others of your people. Light rope weapons, but so so cramped, Barratore grunts and hurls the tankard away from him. If he didn't do something resembling productive or at least busy over the next 14 hours he would drive himself insane. Giving himself some room, the minotaur draws his near 10' blade and begins moving through an aggressive routine against foes only he can see. A feinting straight ahead jab where the blade is pulled back quickly at half stroke and looped back over his head to strike from the shoulder. Ending straight out where he began, he lets go with his right hand trailing the weapon out to his side as he thrusts his horns down and to the right, finishing in a roll. Completing the somersault to his feet, he grips the weapon again with both hands while trying to get his feet back under him to block a low thrust followed by an overhead block.
Barratore continues the highly mobile routine even though his movements slow, his hands slip on the weapon and his feet have an increasingly hard time finding their way. Finally covered in sweat and panting he simply collapses onto the ground in exhaustion

As Crag tries something else an idea occurs to Lemick. He moves towards the kitchen area and returns quickly holding an assortment of foods (raw meat, cooked meat, some fruits, veggies, etc.). "Can you speak common?" Lemick inquires as each type of food is waved near the creature to get it's attention.

Crag steps away from the spider and observes the interaction with the cleric if Waard. "I think you might have hit on something there, Lemick. Look at him. I don't think this one's much more than an animal."
"I wonder what magic could have done such a thing," the dwarf ponders.
"Well, best get prepared for tomorrow. Light. Yeah, you'll need light, Peza. And rope, for certain. But don't forget food and water too. Who knows how long we'll be down there. And caves can turn you around if you're not careful. If we get lost ... " The dwarf leaves that to the human girl's imagination as he goes off to prepare. Crag goes off to secure rations, water, and several sticks of chalk.
Relief visibly floods the body of Harvest Moon. "I do not mind going alone to seek out the Spiderkin, Torian Silverleaf," she says. "But I do not think that I would wish to have to watch any one of the Leaper men at the same time."
The half-elven girl ponders the nature of the spiderkin just as Crag Hammerfist does. It is an interesting idea, that these things are now little more than animals. She studies it for a moment, seeking to determine what it wishes. This, however, is not an easy thing with something so strange as this half-kobold spiderkin.
Finally, Harvest Moon goes off to do her own preparations. She tests the magic lightstone that she had purchased in Chessford. She releases it above her head, and it begins orbiting her crown, giving off a pleasant light in the manner of a torch. She also prepares the chalk board from her map making kit. With this she will be able to make quick notes and drawings.
Tomorrow they would go underground. It will be very exciting.

IC: The bodies seemed to be 'fused', as opposed to 'stitched'. What magic would do such? As the dwarf ponders the question he watches the minotaur go through his combat routine.
Torian ponders out loud, "Well, Minotaurs and Centaurs are only a drop in the bucket for creatures with features of different creatures. Merfok being another. But powerful magic either way."
So far you've deduced that it is either crazed or can't undersand you. Being of kobold brain, it might understand Kobold. Being part spider, it might undersand Spider talk, whatever that is. Or the process may have just jumbled it's cognizance too much to understand anything more than 'hungry', 'food', 'kill', etc. But they did come out in an organized fashion and they were interested in taking 'prey' back.
So comunicating with it would not seem an impossibility, but for now, barring a Vulcan Mind Meld, there's more important things for the group to do. Get ready for the trip down under the next day.
Torian is soon joined by others that whisk the captured creature away, with the assurances that no scalpels will be used, no waterboarding techinques either.
The rest of the day the group spends preparing for some tunnel delving. Gathering torches, ropes, oil flasks, and whatever else seems advisable for underground adventuring. And of course, rest.

He will move up and down the street, visiting the other folks on the street besides Scully's band and trying to get to know them better after what he learned at the feast. He is curious is this is more a residential area or commercial. If commercial, what kind of commerce will be local. He keeps an eye out for taverns, inns and the like for a variety of food.
He also goes looking for a bathhouse. He suspects he will want a good bath after exploring the tunnels and fighting any beasties they might find. He will try a lunch out if possible but makes sure to eat dinner back at the WLA outpost and to be in the compound before dark.
CO-DM JonathanT - We have a hole, now what? Saturday March 24th, 2012 8:55:20 PM Gerox (and anyone else who wants to) explores his neighborhood to get an idea of what is going up around him and what will be available in terms of food, drink, social life. He finds that because of the WLA and Scully's group, a number of businesses have taken up prime spots in hopes of their patronage. This includes what may someday be decent restaurants, a number of pubs (now just a tent and a board across two sawhorses and some benches), a bakery, a smithy, and a number of smaller shops to cater to the everyday needs of the residences.
There are plenty of 'homes' though, and Gerox makes a point to visit as many of the Heads-of-Households as are home at the moment.
A Bathhouse is in the works. Water is not easy to come by as there is no stream. There are plans for a well and a large water tower is starting to go up. A brick furnace is starting to take shape also. A circular pit is being marked out for what will be a sauna room, so says the exuberant proprietor.

Before the spiderkin is taken, Harvest Moon extracts a promise from Torian Silverleaf, that he will return tomorrow, before the League Adventurers depart for the underground, and tell them of what the Fixers have discovered about the spiderkin.
Then, Harvest Moon spends the rest of the day with Bralin Ston ... Bralin the Stonesinger. His strange language in the midst of conflict is perplexing. In the midst of his musings, an idea comes to the dwarven cleric. Crag abandons his preparations and seeks out the elf that's been assigned to them as liaison.
"Torian," he begins, "I've been thinking. Do you think you can convince the Fixer leadership not to collapse the tunnels? At least not all of them. The tunnels are 10x10 so I don't think anyone will be squeezed unless an enlarged spell is used. In AD&D, there use to be restrictions for polearm weapons and t-h swords in such confined spaces but I don't recall anything like that in Pathfinder. I'll look and see.

OOC: DM NOTE: I'm gonna make a big apology here to start out with. All this time, for whatever reason, I had thought that the PC minotaur was medium size. With the question as to whether Barratore would be squeezed in the tunnels, I looked up PC Minotaur in the Woldipedia and to my great surprize I found that the PC Minotaur is Large, like the monster.
Now, in retrospect with the two battles we fought, I don't think that would have changed much. I would have just had the monsters' positions adjusted appropriately.
But now I know, so beware. :)
The tunnels are 10x10, the exact size of the Minotaur so he's not squeezed, but any PC trying to get passed him would be squeezed for those 2 sqrs. and of course, all vision past a large creature will be obscured. So use this info as you choose your marching order.
That said...
IC: The day passes as each members prepares for the underground jaunt the next day. Some explore the local surroundings getting to know the neighbors. Others gather up equipment for underground exploreation, which will be new to most of them. Some even test their battle skills in the tunnel itself, a very wise idea, considering the cramped quarters for some.
Barratore realizes that he fills up the whole width of the tunnel, so he hopes no Enlarge spell gets cast on him this time. With that realization, he is aware that any light source behind him will not do much for those in front, and any in front of him will not do much for those behind. Missile weapons shot past him will also be a challange to not hit him.
Things suddenly just became more dangerous.
The night passes uneventfully and early morning the rooster crows again. Yeah, the rooster survived. A good breakfast sets the mood of a good early morning hike but it will be anything but that.
Torian reappears about the time Scully's group joins up at the hole. As per Harverst's request, Torian informs the group that not much was gleaned from the captured spider-taur, as Torian called it, (and why not, it fits), but they were able to glean that they were sent by The Great One to capture prey, although for excactly what the 'prey' was to be for was not clear.
Torian asks the groups if all is set. If they are, then he has a Fixer reopen the hole (it have been sealed during the night for security purposes). Once that is done, he wishes everyone Good Luck.
OOC: preliminary map here. Give me your marching order, remembering that large members take up a 2x2 space. That is, each sqr is 5'x5'. You can pick wich way to go. Just say Left or Right, then give me your co-ords for the marching order.

As he walks over to the others, he says, I pretty much can cast light whenever we need it. It doesn't last long, only 20 minutes but it could help. I could cast it on someone's shield or helm or something. I should be next to that person to recast it as necessary. So I am guessing I should be in the second row. They gather just past the rubble from the collapsed roof, Scully's group on the other side, then with Scully's group heading one way, the WLA'ers go the other. It's a bit spooky and eerie as they move along cautiously. Due to the uneven excavation, done by a number of crude digging implements, that the tunnel runs traight, however an expert caver can tell slight bends here and there, so by the time you've moved several hundred feet, only one with a compass can tell which direction you are heading.
One thing does seem fairly certain, the tunnel inclines downwards a bit. Whereas at the beginning there was the occasional tree root visible, after several hundred feet, none are. And the dirt smells old and musty.

Once in the tunnel, she sets her mind to the task at hand. The spiderkin had proven dangerous. It would pay to be vigilant. There were also the other goblin-like footprints that she had found. Who knows what might have left those? Then, there is the Great One.
The Ioun Torch proves to work quite well. It is good magic, allowing sight quite a goodly distance away. It must be odd, thinks Harvest Moon in an off moment, to see as humans do. What would it be like to be unable to see clearly out to the furthest extent of the light? Perhaps like being within mist or fog?
She puts the thought aside, turning her mind back to the tracks. Harvest Moon searches for the goblin-like footprints, and also attempts to pick out ones that might have been left by as of yet unidentified creatures.
OoC Note: Harvest will be watching the tracks as well for signs that something might be different. This will reduce her speed to half. But, then again, we have to reduce speed for dwarves and gnomes anyway.

"By the by, I've got one of those Ioun Torches too, if anyone wants to borrow it? Dwarves don't need that sort of thing, you know." He takes it out and offers it to Peza walking next to him.

The dwarf nods agreement with Crag's assessment, but notes something else. "The tunnel was dug out by hand. Thus, took a great deal of time. Thus, whoever abides here has been here a long time as well."
With Barratore's remark, Bralin's memory flashes back to a half-elf he once knew. This bodes ill. The dwarf turns, and fixes the taur with a stare.
"Breathe easy Barratore," he states calmly. "And I am the Stonesinger. My abode is the earth and stone. Tis my air, my sky, my sun, my food, and my drink. And I tell you, this tunnel will hold.

Lemick watches that last of the light get blocked out of sight as soon as Barratore begins following the rest of the group. It's an eerie feeling, but Lemick mood is high, eager for some thought provoking exploration, real decisions, and maybe a small skirmish to free some of the captured villagers that were taken -- preferably still alive, but at the very least prevented from being changed into unnatural, unwanted half-breeds.
As the roots disappear, something obvious Lemick can actually notice in this dark earth tunnel, he offers a question, "Are we moving towards the ocean, or deeper inland?"
CO-DM JonathanT - We have a hole, let's go down Wednesday March 28th, 2012 10:36:21 PM
The path is creepy. The tunnel, mostly through dirt, has rocks and boulders here and there and the tunnel has to make various jigs as the tunnelers did not want to tackle a rock. The ground is also rather uneven. Old wooden beams across the ceiling, held up by two wooden posts are passed occasionally, but certainly not spaced enough to privide surety of stability. What would it take to bring it all down is anyone's guess and a fool's dare.
The going is slow as Harvest takes her time looking at the floor for tracks and other signs of passage through the tunnels. Echoes of echoes of clinking and scraping noises are heard occasionally. Is it the party as they bump a protruding rock or stub a booted toe? Is it something else in the darkness that can easily see a bright light approaching?
For Harvest, the distinction between the spider tracks and the goblinoid tracks is easy but not other 'different' tracks are found.
Finally, after several hours of the slow going in the cramped, stale air, creepy crawlies here and there, tunnel, more stone is visible in the tunnel walls and the floor seems more 'packed'.
OOC: no change in map yet. just picture that old mine in the good ol' western movies.

"Look at this one. No one's going to be living here. And where does it go? No branches off of it. Looks to go only one place. To Rum."
"I think this Great One has been watching the settlement for a long time."

Harvest Moon halts abruptly and without word.
"I am sorry," she whispers her apology when those behind her come quickly up on her bumping and jostling. "The tunnel has changed. I think that more people live here. I think we should go now with greater caution."
"I will go ahead," she says while catching her orbiting Ioun stone and stowing it back into her pouch. "I will be forward at the outside edge of your light, Brom. I will go quietly, and I will stay near the wall."
"I do not think that we will need to read the footsteps any longer."
With that, she creeps ahead of the others. The light dims at twenty feet, but that presents little in the way of difficulty to Harvest Moon. At forty feet out in front of Brom and Bralin the Stonesinger, however, the darkness closes to a pitch blackness. Along this edge, Harvest Moon leads. With her hearing she probes the way ahead as she moves carefully and silently along. Now separated from the noises of her fellow League Adventurers, there is a better chance that she might catch the sounds made by creatures ahead.

The others, some dozen feet back, also notice the change as two who were easily traveling abreast now seem to be rubbing elbows and Barratore who was brushing against the walls ocasionally, now is scraping them.

The narrowing of the tunnel is readily apparent to Harvest Moon. She stops, and begins gesticulating to those behind her, pointing to the walls, attempting to communicate the increasingly cramped conditions to them without the use of sound.
Even more than before, it will be important to have prior warning of danger. They may need to flee, or to draw back to where it is more convenient to fight.
With her silent message sent, Harvest Moon continues on, remaining forty feet in the fore at the front edge of the light.
OoC on Wand:" ... non-priest, non-fighter ... That means stealthy type ... " That sounds like Harvest Moon. One more piece advantage of giving the wand to Harvest Moon (in addition to having a class that can trigger the wand), she can carry it and still fight.
BTW, Stealth check from everyone, how about? Even if it sucks, it's better than not to try at all.
"I think you're right, Lemick," the dwarf replies. Then Crag remembers to keep quiet and lowers his voice. "But it may not be a trap. Why do you humans make some of your streets so narrow and twisted? To slow down invaders. This may be as simple as that. But that means at some point someone expected foes to be coming back down their tunnels."
"Still, couldn't hurt to look." Crag turns an eye to the workmanship of the tunnel as the WLA underground scouting party gets moving again. The age of the workmanship. Is that human thinking that this might have been done overnight? Typical human thinking. Still, an underground deadfall would be a nasty surprise. With these thoughts, Crag eyes the way ahead with care, his dwarven vision penetrating even to the dark ahead.
"Er, 'scuse me. If you don't mind." Crag takes the place in front of Peza as the tunnel narrows. "I can see further than you can down here, Miss Peza," is his excuse. "This staying quiet thing is harder than it looks.

Lemick actually finds some comfort in the trap being found; clearly someone beneath has some intelligence.
With the narrow tunnel, Lemick is pretty stuck in position. "Any idea what would happen if we just set the trap off from a distance? We could have Barratore toss a weighty rock onto it from down the tunnel?"
"As for climbing over the trap, that wouldn't go well for me." he who wears chainmail states.

Brom pauses and looks down behind him. "Cut the wasted chatter." He whispers. He immediately looks back forward.
"It could collapse the tunnel." He responds to Lemick's suggestion. "Dwarves, any ideas. Underground is your department."
