Aftermath

Co-DM Cayzle

Alphonse asks for the full tale. Dilantar wants to look into this box. Yel'kno drops off the sack and listens to the tale.

Jozhur arrives, with the story of what he saw. Seeing his wounds, Engev and Lansel use their magic.

OOC: Everyone should put their hit points at max now.

Once healed, Spire's careful streak inspires him to check out Lansel, but he senses no sign of magical influence.

Before he tells you his tale, Lansel asks for the details of the party's adventures. He nods at whatever Engev and you say, as if what he hears confirms his own knowledge.

Lansel tells you that his story starts long ago. Engev interrupts. "Is it necessary to reveal all your privacy, my old friend?" Engev's tone makes it sound like Lansel is going to take off all his clothes or something.

Lansel nods. "It is time to tell all of my story, even though it may be painful. These good folk have risked their lives, so it is my obligation."

It seems Lansel suffers from an affliction, maybe magical, maybe just mental. Sometimes he is someone completely other than who he usually is. In his other self, he has gone to sea, even signing on to the orc vessel you saw.

"It took me a long time to come to this realization, but when I confronted Captain Nakresh, the things he said made me understand."

What's more, as his other self, Lansel learned secrets that Nakresh does not want known, Lansel deduces. That's why the barbarians kidnapped him. They hoped to intimidate him into revealing the secrets. However, as Lansel, he could not tell them a thing. The barbarian leader, a shaman, had been trying to find ways to force him to remember, or to bring the other side of Lansel to the fore.

That is the heart of it.

In the meantime, Lansel tells you that the box contains the barbarian's hoard. When you open it, you find sacks of coins, silver and gold, worth at least 3,000 gold. In a pouch you find about two dozen pearls, each of great worth.

There is also a magical flag.

==========

OOC on game tone: I want to respond to this comment: "I wasn't aware that The Wold was based more on epic/heroic values than realistic ones." I think this speaks to the central tension of this Bonetown game. Is Bonetown dangerous, unruly, disorganized, and frankly evil? Can you buy foul addictive things to chew and drink? Can you buy the contract of an indentured servant, almost the next thing to slavery? If you cut down an enemy in the street, canyou get away with it? The answer to all these is YES.

But at the same time, you all are constrained to be heroes. That's the tension. How can you be heroes in a place like this? There will be gritty realism. There will be danger and betrayal. But you do not have to worry about what to do with defeated foes. There are plenty of other, more interesting gritty challenges ahead.

Hope that helps!

(Joel) Dilantar Krenwae'afein AC 15/13/12 - CMD 13 - HP 8/8()
Thursday March 8th, 2012 10:32:25 AM

Disgusted with his performance with the falchion, Dilantar decides to add it to the general pool of loot to be taken for sale. He does decide to keep his dagger and looks at the rest of the items in the general pool. Dilantar allows someone else to tell their story while pondering what Lansel has told them. This sounds similar to the stories I have heard about alchemists who take their mutagen experimentation too far, thus creating a second personality. While thnking this through Dilantar will stay silent, playing absent-mindedly with the pages in his formula book.

((I move we split the coinage and loot in the following manner:

*the money(3000gp from the box) be split between us and Lansel, us for saving him and him as reparations from the barbarians for being kidnapped.
the loot that Yel'kno found be put in the selling pool as long as no one wants any of it

*the pearls placed in the group loot, to be used as material components or what have you(I believe that identify requires a pearl of a certain worth as a component)

*The flag, once identified, can be placed in the group loot to eventually be placed on the ship or as a battle standard, or if the enchantment is to vile, to be sold/harvested for raw materials for crafting/enchanting

*The selling pool is to be split between the party, with the members who took expensive loot(i.e. the amulets/masterwork items) getting less than the others(at a rate to be determined(I would go with something like minus half market value of whatever they took, since generally we wont get full price in selling items, however that is up for debate and critiquing of course)

Any suggestions/ideas/corrections to be made are of course welcome :D All those in favor say "Aye"))

(Josh) Alphonse AC 17/13/14 CMD 13 HP 6/6
Thursday March 8th, 2012 10:44:46 AM

"I see," says Alphonse, examining the flag, "I wonder if perhaps we can find someone to help cure you of this malady."

After a minute of thought, Alphonse puts the flag back in the crate, "I can't tell much about this today, but I can perform a thorough examination tomorrow. Spire, would you care to try your hand?"

(Ian) Spirysn'rar Kilarn AC 14/14/10 - CMD 14 - HP 6/6  d20+9=26 ;
Thursday March 8th, 2012 11:47:18 AM

Spire listens carefully to Lansel's story, and goes over to look at the flag without a word when Alphonse is done with it. His eyes glow the soft blue again as he looks it over, and puts it back down slowly. (Kn: Arcana 26) "I have... a few questions for you, Lansel, if you don't mine answering them." His eyes return to normal as he sits down to face Lansel. "First, do you have any connection ot the temple of Wardd in town? We paid a priest there for a scrying of you, and he informed us you were dead. Clearly... that is not the case. Second... the Captain Nakresh. He didn't seem overly hostile towards you when we encountered him. He seemed almost apathetic towards you." During this tirade, Spire stands up and begins pacing, stroking his chin as he does so. "While I don't think it should be taken off the table, I do not believe that he hired these men to kidnap you."

OOC :: The amulets are valuable to any melee character. I can't remember if it's a swift action or a free action, but they give you a +1 bonus to any melee attack once per round, which is incredible. Spire will probably give his up to anyone who needs it, because he's never going to get into melee range. I'm all for splitting everything as Joel suggested, but I can't seem to find a spell with pearls as the material component, so I think we should just sell them for more loot.

(Josh) Alphonse AC 17/13/14 CMD 13 HP 6/6
Thursday March 8th, 2012 12:29:52 PM

ooc: yeah, the only spell I know of that uses pearls is sympathy, which is an 8th level spell, so I vote we sell 'em (identify requires wine sitrred with an owl feather ftr). My thoughts:

The total monetary value of all our loot (less what we gave to the witch and Engev) is 7,172 gp. This is not including the 23 pearls, the magic flag, the pelts, and the new falchions, whose prices were not given.

If we split this 9 ways (Yel'kno, Dilantar, Alphonse, Rogar, Spire, Jozhur, Giada, Engev, and Lansel), that entitles us to an 11.11% cut each. Thus, each person's share would be 796 gold, 8 silver, and 8 copper, plus 11 percent of whatever the pearls, furs, and falchions are worth (assuming we keep the flag for group use and it doesn't factor into the whole thing). I move that each person gets this much worth of treasure and coins.

Alphonse has spent time figuring all this out, since his goal is basically to become a merchant who trades largely in magic, so he suggests it when the subject comes up.

Yel'kno (Jon) AC 17/14/13 CMD 16 HP 10/11
Thursday March 8th, 2012 10:17:28 PM

Yel'kno gasps as the crate is open and the wealth spills out of it. He's never seen that much coin in one place before, at least not and been able to touch it. With a shake of his head he tears his gaze away from the gold and gems to look back at the group, "I agree that Nakresh probably didn't send the barbarians after Lansel... it seems more like the shaman somehow found out that he learned things from Nakresh and figured Lansel would be an easier target than the Captain. The pirate and his crew seemed like they would have been more than a match for these cultist."

OOC: Where the amulets fate items that can't be sold? With Spire giving up his, Jozhur and Rogar should both take one.

We should take some of the money to buy a wand of CLW as a group item too.

We don't know what we can get for selling rates in Bonetown, but if we manage to get to the Catacombs the rate is 90% value... so I'm for

value of goods * 0.9 + coins and gems - group purchases / number of people.

Items can be purchased from the "to sell" pile using individual shares at the 90% rate

Jozhur's jaw drops at the contents of the spoils. He quickly looks over the items (appraise checks for falchions, furs, pearls, and flag).

"I'm sure we haven't seen the last of those thugs, we'd better arm up and be ready for them."

ooc: Jozhur would be happy to take any unwanted loot, especially if it can't be sold.

Dilantar thinks that Lansel's tale of a split personality sounds vaguely familiar, but he does not speak up.

Alphonse wonders if the party can help Lansel find a cure.

Spire has some wise questions, about the Temple of Wardd, and who got the barbarians to kidnap Lansel. Probably not the orc captain.

Yel'kno agrees that Nakresh was not likely behind it.

Jozhur has no insight into the mystery, but he urges caution nonetheless.

Lansel reveals some more of his history. He did indeed go to the Temple of Wardd. He had hesitated because Wardd and Pantheon are not allied, but Wardd is known to be the god of insanity, and he hoped the priests there would be able to help. It was a Rev. Moller he met, and Moller urged him to seek out Nakresh. He thought that exposure to the orc ship and captain would help him to integrate his separate sets of memories. It did not work.

It was after he left Nakresh that the barbarians kidnapped him. They and their shaman wanted him to reveal Nakresh's secrets, but Lansel did not know them.

==========

Do you mention your plan to build a wood house on a vacant lot to Lansel? And/or Engev?

==========

Engev wants no part of the loot. "It is I who should be rewarding you!" he says. Lansel is willing to take an equal share. "That seems fair to me, and it still leaves me in your debt."

Alphonse ponders the shares and forgets to include Baird. The gentle healer "ahems" and thinks it is only fair that he get a share too.

More details on loot appraisals and xp to come this weekend.

Lansel, do you perhaps follow the path of alchemy? Because what you suffer from sounds a lot like a tale I heard from my mentor, cautioning the excessive use of mutagens, for altering your body that much could cause another 'entity' was how he worded it, to appear. This entity could control your body for a time, and while it was aware of you did, you were not necessarily aware of it would be doing. I only ask because I have not heard tell of what your profession is, not that you had any reason to let us know that bit of information, and it might help if I was right. Otherwise I know of no way of helping this situation sadly. Turning to address everyone, Dilantar speaks about lodging, Upon arriving in town, I had originally intended on doing odd jobs and various other activities to earn money for to build my initial home here. However, the past few days have supplied the lot of us with some amount of coin, which I believe would be enough to build at least a small, serviceable home. Does anyone know of where I might inqire about procuring a carpenter or other tradesman to build my home? Dilantar is excited at the prospect of finally having a place to call home in this town.

"Oh! Sorry Baird! My deepest apologies!" says Alphonse, feeling sheepish, "well, if you don't want any Brother Engev, then that keeps the math consistent at least. As far as housing, Dilantar, I believe what we have here is enough for a rather large and comfortable dwelling, and I think I might know where we can find a carpenter who won't rob us blind in the night."

One Amulet of Combat (value roughly 1,000 gp)
One regular dagger (value roughly 2 gp)

Selling things in Bonetown: If you want to sell things in Bonetown, you can simply roll a diplomacy check to represent your skill at haggling. Add that to 40, and that's the percent of value you get on a sale. If you roll a 21, you get 61% of book value. Gems and coins are as good as currency, and can be used at 100%

Selling things in the Catacombs: You have to get to Rum, and in the Wold's magic shop, the exchange rate is 90%.

===== ===== ===== =====

Spire looks at the magic flag. His knowledge of arcane suggests that the tattered edge of the flag is important. He notes that the flag shows the Jolly Roger, but it is magical writing, not woven into the fabric. [OOC: IIRC, it takes a spellcraft check and Det Magic or Identify or similar to get more details on a magic item. I'll let it slide for today.]

Flag of the Captain: If a captain of a ship tears a strip off the edge of the flag and carries it on his or her person, AND flies the flag above all others, he or she gains a +3 competence bonus to Diplomacy and Intimidate checks he makes while on board the ship. The captain can mentally change the emblem on the flag once per day. OOC: This is not stock magic item, and may not be bought or sold in the Catacombs. It takes up no slot. Its value is about 4,000 gp.

===== ===== ===== =====

Amulet of Combat: This stone amulet on a rawhide cord bestows upon the wearer a +1 sacred bonus to one attack and to the damage roll made (if that attack succeeds) each round in combat with a melee weapon or natural weapon. OOC: This is not stock magic item, and may not be bought or sold in the Catacombs. It takes up the necklace/amulet slot. Its value is about 1,000 gp.

===== ===== ===== =====

Dilantar mentions to Lansel his theory on alchemical substance abuse. He is also keen to build a small house.

Alphonse is enthusiastic about a residence, and tries to think of a local carpenter.

Jozhur and Spire express suspicions and deep reservations concerning the Rev. Moller at the Temple of Wardd.

Lansel finds Dilantar's ideas interesting, but he cannot answer them. "So many of my memories are lost now," he laments. "And who knows what experimental substances I may have tried while not in my right mind."

Both Lansel and Engev are very interested in the new house. "I am awfully cramped here," says Engev. "And I am tired of the shopkeeper from whom I rent, to say the least," says Lansel. "Moreover, I cannot help but worry about those barbarians. If it would not be an unwelcome intrusion, might there be room for two worn clerics in your abode?"

(Brock) Jozhur AC16/14/12--CMD 16--HP 1/9
Monday March 12th, 2012 9:25:58 AM

Jozhur looks at Lansel and Engev. "I would see no problem with it, it'd be nice to have someone to keep an eye on the place while we are out."

He then picks up the dagger from the pile of loot. "I could always use a spare I guess. That amulet also catches my eye, if no one will take it I would give up most of my share of the gold for it, whatever everyone agrees is fair."

(Josh) Alphonse AC 17/13/14 CMD 13 HP 6/6
Monday March 12th, 2012 11:23:57 AM

"Perhaps we should pay this high priest a visit once we've had a good night's sleep and hidden this loot away safely," suggests Alphonse to the group, "and I'd be happy to have you both in any home I help build," says Alphonse, turning to Lansel and Engev.

"Now, factoring in the value of these pearls and this flag, I'd say the total market value of our loot comes to roughly 13,877 gold pieces. Not that we'll get anything close to that for it in a pit like Bonetown, mind you."

Alphonse paces, his brow furrowed in thought.

"If we were to split that 9 ways, we would each be entitled to a share of 1,541 gold pieces, 7 silver pieces and... let's see... 3 copper pieces if my math is correct. This is all not counting the two potions which I believe we agreed we would keep for group use in the future. I suggest whoever wants to lay claim to anything in this hoard do so now, up to the amount of their share, then we sell the rest here in Bonetown and distribute it as closely as we can to even things out."

Turning to the group, he adds, "What do you all think of that?"

Regarding lodgings, as long as I have room for my alchemy lab and a small room to myself, I do not mind others staying in the home. Perhaps we can have a communal room that includes a kitchen and dining area, and each person has a small room to themselves? Dilantar sets thinking about the new home in the back of his mind for later perusal.

((OOC: Would I be able to do some "drug testing" on Lansel with my alchemy kit and a Craft(Alchemy) check using some of his blood? I don't think there is a way of doing something like that and figured Craft(Alchemy) would be the best way to do that. If not that's cool, I will finish the rest of Dilantar's actions after I get a response on this :D ))

===== ===== =====

The party discusses constructing a house of some sort. Dilantar, Alphonse, and Jozhur are all happy to accommodate the two clerics.

Dilantar determines that alchemy is probably a contributing agent to Lansel's disorder, but not its root cause. However, it seems likely that in his other personality, he tended to abuse substances that contributed to keeping him that way.

The party continues to discuss the loot. OOC: Please do keep in mind that the coins and gems are valued at 100%, and can be split at will. All other loot will have to be shared as is and/or sold and the proceeds divided. If you want to do the sale here in Bonetown, we can handle that over the next couple days. If you want to make a trip to the Catacombs and Rum, that will be an adventure.

Alphonse recalls seeing a carpenter's shop in town, and a quick inquiry suggests that a rough estimate of a gold piece per square foot will suffice to build a simple but sturdy wood building with interior walls and 8-ft-high ceilings. Furnishings, windows, and locks are extra, but cheapie doors are free. So if you want a 10x10 room or your own, that will set you back 100 gp. The price would be quite high on the mainland, but here, well, there you go. If you have any way to contribute labor etc, that could get you a discount.

Spire finally speaks up, saying, "I, too, would be willing to pay in part for a house. I would require my own room, but otherwise I have no qualms with brothers Engev and Lansel staying with us. If we're to get this built, I suggest we do it soon, make it a priority. Sell only what we need to cover the costs, and then sell the rest once we have a roof over our heads."

Dilantar ponders over some of the possible causes for Lansel's disorder, and cannot seem to establish a root cause. He can think of several different substances that could contribute to continuing such a condition, but none that would be strong enough to seperate memories as such. Dilantar explains as much to Lansel, and gives him his word that he will help with what he can, but Dilantar cannot promise anything. After this quick discussion, Dilantar un-equips his falchion and throws it in the pile of things to be sold with great disgust, I should have never picked that thing up, next chance I get I am buying a decent rapier. Addressing the others, Dilantar speaks about the future lodgings, I think those of us who want to have our own room should pay for our room, and use the group loot to pay for the main area of the home. I do agree that we should use some of the loot money to buy a wand of Cure Light Wounds, and perhaps a few other items, but I also agree that the house should be our first priority. I have an extract that would help with the construction, but I would have to be the one utilizing said extract. Maybe it can get us a decent discount on the construction fees. Dilantar waits to see if anyone else has an idea for the new home.

((OOC: So, upon gaining a level, do you want us to just stat it up according to the Woldian house rules or RP it out on this board? I am a little unclear as to the precedent :) ))

OOC :: I'm thinking we should spend some downtime levelling and making checks that we need to craft and whatnot. I know Spire would like to make some scrolls, and I'm sure Alphonse wants to as well. It'll take a bit for the house to get built anyways, so we can spend that time in game making the various checks we need.

"I'd have to agree with Dilantar," says Alphonse, "in that we need a place to call our own. I'll pony up the 100 gold for my own room, as well as another 200 for a small 10' x 20' shop attached to the side. After all, the rent at my old shop was unbearable. Of course I'll chip in for the main room as well, and I don't mind springing for decent locks - on my own doors anyway."

Alphonse mulls over the math on the loot once again.

"Okay now, how about whoever needs an item, feel free to take it, since it's for the benefit of the group anyway. Apart from that, we sell the rest and divvy up the spoils once we know how much we've actually got. Sound good? We can talk about buying group items after that, though I agree about the wand, it would come in quite handy."

ooc: okay, all leveled up. I agree about the downtime thing, it would give us time to sell loot, build the house, go shopping, and scribe some scrolls.

"You can take 100gp out of my share of the gold for my room. Also, I would not be opposed to chipping in for better locks on the outer doors. We have a good bit of coin between us now, perhaps we should wait to accumulate more goods before we make a trip to Rum."

Jozhur has claimed the dagger and will take the amulet if no one else does. He will agree to whatever everyone else decides on for wealth distribution, as he was not much of a part in this adventure. He is certainly willing to pay for the amulet.

OOC: I'm assuming everyone leveled, not sure what experience I was supposed to start at. Also, rolled an 8 in the loot n booty for hp, +1 constitution and +1 favored class=+10hp. Let me know if I didn't do that right.

"Sounds like a solid plan. Use the spoils of war to fund a portion of the building (ie group loot) and each of use chipping in for whatever personal space we want. A hundred gold is steep up front but in the long run it should save us a bit of gold. Plus it would allow Brother Engev to convert his building into a true church."

OOC :: So once everything gets sold, we use the money for a communal area (ie. kitchen, dining room etc) and then split the loot from that. Then we can use our individual money to pay for our rooms, however we want them. I can get a basic mock-up of what it could look like up later today. Either way, we should get around to selling this stuff so we don't spend a week just talking about how we want to sell it.

(Joel) Dilantar Krenwae'afein AC 15/13/12 - CMD 13 - HP 8/8()
Wednesday March 14th, 2012 1:48:34 PM

OOC: Dilantar is also willing to spend some downtime crafting and brewing potions and poisons. He is also willing to brew a potion for which he knows the spell(Crafters Fortune, Cure Light Wounds, Disguise Self, Endure Elements, Identify, Shield, Touch of the Sea, Ant Haul) for another character, or Lansel and Engev, at cost(25 x spell level x caster level) provided the material costs(using the previous equation)

Also, regarding selling the loot, Cayzle has mentioned that the pearls are as good as gold, with no value lost during trade, and considering we have 3000+gp already, with another 3000gp worth of pearls, we can easily build a home, furnish it, and have Lansel and Engev be the caretakers while we go on a "loot run" to the city of Rum, getting a better return on our less liquid assets. Just an option tho, I am fine with whatever.

@Ian(Spire) & Josh(Alphonse): Alchemists can learn spells from Wizard spell books(also scrolls but not as applicable atm) with a Spellcraft check, provided the spell is also on the Alchemist spell list, so if there is a particular spell that you would like in potion form, at the above mentioned price, that I do not know, and you also don't want to make a scroll for it, Dilantar would be willing to learn from you your arcane secrets to become the potion master :D Just throwing that out there

@Anyone interested in poisons: Dilantar is going to be a poison maker, so if anyone is willing to pay for material costs, Dilantar will not charge anything to make you a dose or two, just keep in mind, that for Drow Poison(Dilantar's preferred poison) it takes a little less than 7 days to make 1 dose, as the rules are written, so you might be waiting a little bit to get it. Of course depending on how long we will have for downtime, it might not matter much, just something to keep in mind.

OOC: You can upgrade your PC sheets howsoever you like. You can also role play out things like learning new spells and skills if you like. Feel free to assume a week or two goes by without major incident. That is also time you can use to craft items ... once you buy the things you need to make them. You can't just spin gold into items. Lansel has some sources for scroll fixin's, though. Potion parts you have to either source locally in game or get at the Catacombs.

OOC to Brock: Assume you started with 350 xp and a hero point. Add the 1850 you have earned, and you are up a level.

Spire avidly pursues the prospect of house-building, and is happy to include the two clerics of Pantheon.

Dilantar explains what he can to Lansel and offers help. The priest is clearly grateful. Dilantar also offers some magical assistance with house-building. He thinks that should come first.

Yel'kno's skill in working wood will certainly come in handy as well!

Alphonse is willing to pay for his own room and a workshop. He also suggests that you should claim items you will use, and then sell the rest and then figure out group expenditures such as the house and group items.

Jozhur is happy enough with the house and loot ideas presented.

Rogar agrees too, and mentions that Brother Engev can expand his chapel if he has living quarters at the group house.

"That is exactly my plan," Engev exclaims. "I'll stay at the new house for my residence, and make my existing chapel space much bigger."

With Brother Engev's assistance -- because he does have a good feel for who controls what in Bonetown, even if he still naively hopes to convince them all to follow the rule of law -- an empty unclaimed lot is found, closer to the inland side of the port than to the bustling harbor. A local woodworker -- one Teransse Carpenter, he names himself -- is found who is willing to run the construction.

Each hero, please give the dimensions of your own private space. Also give your choice on the dimensions of the common areas. I'll create a consensus around that. Also state your preferred use of the common space. Here are two examples.

Br. Engev wants a modest 5x15 space for his own quarters. He thinks you need a 10x10 kitchen, a 20x20 common room, and 5x5 storeroom.

Br. Lansel wants a 10x10 bedroom and a 10x10 workroom for his scribe and scroll business. He also wants an outer door from the side yard of the building into his workroom so customers do not have to walk through the common area to conduct business. He also wants a sign above that outer door. He also intends to pay for the outer door to be iron-bound, with a decent lock. He agrees with Br. Engev on the common areas, but maybe a bit bigger.

What would you like for your building?

Regarding other matters ... Lansel has a source for scroll supplies and spellbook paper and ink. It'll cost 10 percent over book price for those things, however, so a scroll for a first level spell at caster level 1 will cost 13.6 gp to make, rather than the usual 12.5 gp. In the future, the price may fluctuate, so ask me or Tanner the current price.

Dilantar asks around town and comes to the conclusion that the witch who lives in the Mangrove Swamp is likely your best source for alchemical ingredients. But if you go out there, I need a swim check ... and who is going with you?

Jozhur requests a magic amulet from the loot hoard and values it at the best rate the group could have gotten otherwise.

Spire shares his spellbook and takes the time to scribe a couple scrolls. He draws out some plans for the house -- with two floors.

Yel'kno puts his muscles into it, working with the carpenter.

Alphonse is happy to share his workshop. Perhaps the best thing of all would be to have one common workshop for all sellers? He contributes to the plans, starts a garden, and shares spells.

The party finds that default "windows" are holes in the walls with shutters to close at night or rain. If you want glass or oiled paper, that will be more. Many people just use curtains for privacy.

In the midst of the construction, Three Touch Young Fellows arrive on the site, wielding saps and looking intimidating.

"Hey! Who says you can put a building up here? Did you get permission from the Red Foam Gang? No, you did not, and Humble Tom ain't too leased about it." The big guy looks pretty angry. Who chooses to be on the scene, and what is your response?

The biggest one is wearing chain mail. The other two have on studded leather, and great clubs are lashed to the backs of all three.

Dilantar, happy with the progress of his poison making and the way the house is shaping up, raises an eyebrow at the announcement from the three tough young fellows. Maybe i will get a chance to test out the efficacy of this poison sooner than I thought Out loud, Dilantar addresses their leader, Thank you for the message gentlemen, I am sure we are all shaking in our boots. If you would go back to our good friend Humble Tom and let him know message received that would be most courteous on your collective parts. Dilantar then opens the front door and lets everyone hear, Good friends, of whom there are quite a few of, we have a message from Humble Tom that he is not happy with our conduct. Shall we show his messengers our hospitality to his messengers in typical Bonetown fashion? As he says this last bit, Dilantar loads his hand crossbow with a poisoned crossbow bolt and keeps it in plain view.

((Did they mean to say "leased" or was it supposed to be "pleased"? If the former, Dilantar probably would have made a crack about poor grammar and vocabulary usage, however if it is the latter, of course no such thing would occur :P ))

OOC: Sorry for the typos in posts lately. The three young fellows are tough, not touch. Humble Tom is not pleased, not not leased. Your weary DM is tired these days, and it shoes.

OOC regarding spellcraft and adding spells to a spellbook. Per the rules, No matter what the spell's source, the wizard must first decipher the magical writing (see Arcane Magical Writings). Next, he must spend 1 hour studying the spell. At the end of the hour, he must make a Spellcraft check (DC 15 + spell's level). A wizard who has specialized in a school of spells gains a +2 bonus on the Spellcraft check if the new spell is from his specialty school. If the check succeeds, the wizard understands the spell and can copy it into his spellbook (see Writing a New Spell into a Spellbook). The process leaves a spellbook that was copied from unharmed, but a spell successfully copied from a magic scroll disappears from the parchment. If the check fails, the wizard cannot understand or copy the spell. He cannot attempt to learn or copy that spell again until he gains another rank in Spellcraft. If the spell was from a scroll, a failed Spellcraft check does not cause the spell to vanish. Moreover, per the rules on skills, When your character is not in immediate danger or distracted, you may choose to take 10. So yes, you may take 10 on these checks.

Dilantar takes a lead role in addressing the three gangers. His witty rejoinders both defuse and, after a moment in which the toughs can consider, exacerbate the situation. OOC: Yes, Diplomacy / Intimidate checks are always welcome in these kinds of situations.

Yel'kno puts down his saw and draws his sword, keeping his own council. He thinks maybe he has heard of this gang before.

Spire is distracted from spell lore by the ruckus out front. He listens and recalls that the Red Foam Gang is one of the more powerful factions in Bonetown.

Alphonse also looks up from his study, casts a couple spells, and watches from the second floor. He too thinks he has heard of the Red Foam Gang.

Rogar is a peacemaker, and calms the situation down with his gentle words.

Jozhur adds his own wise words to Rogar's efforts, and as he speaks, the toughs relax a little.

"Now we're talking sensible like," the leader, in chain mail, says. "Humble Tom is like the weather. He gets angry, like a storm, and then he is sunny."

"Yeah, he farts rainbows! GaHAW!" bellows one of the other thugs.

"Shut up, Jens," the leader says, not smiling. "Well, Humble Tom will shine happy indeed if you just follow the usual procedure. There's the matter of the building permit, and the monthly insurance payment. And the late fee. But those will depend on what kind of business you plan to run here. So tell Dead-eye Dirk your plans, goodfellows."

Alphonse asks Dirk what kind of insurance he intends to provide. He also wants to know how the party can even be sure that Dirk is from this so-called Red Foam Gang.

Dirk grins. "It is clear to me that you are fresh meat. Anyone in Bonetown knows you don't lie about being in the gang unless you want to wake up dead one morning. We got no badges. You want the law? Go live in Rum or swim home to mommy and daddy. The insurance we give is to keep you safe from us burning down your nice new building. We also look out to stop other gangs from poaching. So everybody gets to keep their nice new buildings."

Yel'kno has a few similar questions. Dirk laughs. "You ask around. You ask people who has the tattoo of the dead eye. That's me." He shows you a tattoo on his arm of a cloudy pierced eye, leaking. He adds, "You think you can stand up to the meanest bunch of marines in Bonetown? You try to be "self-insured" and see how far that gets you. And what are your plans for guarding your building 24/7?"

Dilantar remains quiet and watchful.

Rogar asks for assurances, and says, "Everything here is allowed within the limits of the law, isn't it?"

At that Jens issues another huge belly laugh. "HU-HAW! He thinks we got laws!"

This time Dirk just turns and hits Jens in the head, wordlessly, As Jens rubs his head, Dirk says softly, "What are you even talking about, dwarf? You pay your insurance, which insures that we don't beat you down. Is this hard to understand? And since you pay to us, in our territory, if some other gang moves in, we beat them down. Got it?"

He adds, "You give us gold, we do not give you gold, ever."

Jozhur ihad some similar questions.

Dirk answers as he has before, trying to be patient. "We're not muggers. We don't even want your gold now, though a good faith down payment would make Humble Tom happy. We can come back, with a good 20 men, to collect in a few days."

"Now, how much will we need to collect? How many people are living here? Is it a flop house? Are you selling anything at all? It's a pretty big building. Probably cost you a pretty coin. What do you fellows do, and how do you make your way in this wild Wold. You don't have the look of buccaneers to me. Nor mercs, though you are armed well enough."

"Gu-HAW!" laughs Jens. "Maybe they be HEROES!"

This time even Dirk chuckles at the jest.

[OOC: Drow in Bonetown? You have not seen any. The population varies as ships pull in and out, and you have not even really begun to explore the town. There may be one or two.]

Jozhur asks for a tally on how much the gang wants to extort. Alphonse adds some detail and also asks for an accounting.

Dirk grins. "The brass tacks, then? We like to make it easy for those who have a hard time with counting. Building fee is 100 gold. Late fee is another 100 gold. After that, it's 10 gold a month, or a silver out of every gold you do in trade, whichever is higher."

He folds his arms over his chest. "For that, you get the friendship of the Read Foam Gang, as well as the friendship of all your neighbors. That's no little thing in a town of thieves and firebugs."

Dilantar offers the friendship of his own Drow House and suggests that such a thing would be valuable.

Dirk smiles and says, "Sure, Humble Tom is a humble man. He would be please to talk business with a friend, especially lucrative business. But why don't you make friendly like and pay up, like all your neighbors do, first? That's a good way to win Humble Tom's ear."

Yel'kno makes a reasonable point about avoiding bloodshed, although he leavens it with an insult.

"BuhHWAW!" laughs Jens. "He says I'm slow!"

Dirk's fist lashes out at Jens -- and the blow lands. "He's right," says Dirk. "You are slow."

Rogar, however, steps up the rhetoric, and threatens Dirk with humiliation.

Spire puts the arrow he had drawn away, pulling out two small pouches clanging with gold. He smiles as best he can, and hands them to Dirk. "There you have it, sirs, two hundred gold as a building fee and a late fee. If that is all, I'll ask that you leave now, as we are rather busy with building our abode. We shall see you in one months' time to pay our... shall we say, rent." Spire drops the smile, as it was making his face sore, and instead attempts to look as non-threatening as possible. Yel'kno, Dilantar and Jozhur wait to see what will happen. Jozhur thinks they probably are who they say they are. He thinks that impersonating a known gang is a mostly foolhardy thing to do.

We can pay now and get our money back later when we get even with the gang, but we cannot fight them yet. We need more information on them before we fight back, for "To fight with no information is to willingly turn one's back on the armed enemy" so my mentor used to say. Should they decide to do evil with the money, we can make what reparations are required, help out where we can, but we are not strong enough to fight them yet. You have seen how we have been faring in combat recently, we always have at least 2 people down in every fight. All I am asking is you think through and meditate on wether we can feasibly stand up to this gang and keep our lives intact. Heroes who foolishly stand up to a much stronger force are dead heroes. All that said, I don't think we should have paid them either but what is done is done, and it gives us more time to become stronger and find out more about Humble Tom. Dilantar hopes to see Rogar stay but having said this, he is tired of seeing people join them only to leave as the atmosphere of Bonetown takes it's toll.

So please consider if you know anyone who would like to join, as well as if you know any message board or other online communities where you could post recruiting enticements. If you need help crafting a good recruitment pitch, email me -- I have a few saved up we could tweak.

OOC: What did the price per sq ft end up being with the party members helping in building? Did Yel'kno receive any info such as cost/time for passage to Rum?

Rogar sighs. "Brother Engev they are not my friends. They do not care about doing good only lining their pockets with coin."

ooc: the wold is too class handicapped. for example no neutral alignment, which makes no sense whatsoever because of the problems it causes. if Rogar was neutral good then there wouldnt be an issue with paying protection money but he has to be lawful good. There are few Lawful good pc's in groups, at least the ones I've been in, and its always a problem. So that eliminates paladins and monks. This has become one huge headache and when posting becomes a chore then what's the point? Also I don't see how Rogar can function in this group. He won't live with them. He doesnt want to talk to them and believes they are just a step away from joining one of the gangs and taking protection money from people. There has only been words from the others and those aren't to be trusted. So I wish everybody luck. I see no reason for me to stay.

Jozhur would make the trip with Dilantar and Alphonse to visit the witch, asking her if there is anything she needs help with. He mentions to the group that Goodie Bess saved his life when his ship wrecked off the shore near Bonetown.

ooc: Sorry about not posting for awhile, it's been the most hectic week I've had in a long time.

(Josh) Alphonse AC 17/13/14 CMD 14 HP 10/10

ooc on money: So if we split the spendable loot 9 ways as discussed, we'd each get 667 gold, 7 silver, and 7 copper. Subtract 200 apiece (from the seven of us - six plus lansel) for the common areas of the housing (1400 square feet of common area divided by 7), and that leaves each person with a share of immediately spendable money equal to 467 gold, 7 silver, and 7 copper minus whatever they spent on their personal rooms.

As for my part, I think all three shops should be merged for ease of access. This makes my costs come to 200 gp for my room and my portion of the shop. I'll also spend the following:

- an adamantine ring for his bonded object (60gp, assuming it costs the same as an adamantine arrowhead would)
- two guard dogs (50 gp)
- 5 light detectors (5gp)
- small tent (10 gp)
- smelling salts (25 gp)
- the following scrolls: mage armor(4), Unseen Servant (1), Crafter's Fortune(2), comprehend languages(1) for a total of 100gp

The scrolls will all be listed for sale in the shop for 25gp apiece, though Alphonse keeps them in his room until they are asked for. His services are also for hire at a rate of 20 gp for 1st level spells cast or 10 gp for 0th level spells cast.

This leaves him with a total of 17 gold, 7 silver, and 7 copper, plus his existing 204 gold, six silver, and six copper. If there is market fluctuation for Bonetown, feel free to take the difference out of what I've got left.

While visiting Goodie Bess he asks her to teach him about brewing potions (this is RP setup for him taking Brew Potion at third level).

Alphonse's room is a small square room with a heavy bolt that can be slid across the door, and another that can be put across the heavy oak shutters (if this costs extra, that's fine, just let me know how much). He's got a small, but comfortable bed and a bookshelf next to a desk he uses for his studies. Hanging from the ceiling are a number of drying herbs and various small animal bones. At the end of his bed is a foot locker that he keeps all but 50 gp of his money in, as well as any valuable items he might come across, and his scrolls that are for sale at the shop.

ooc: Had some time to look things over, so I'll just make another post now. After contributing 370gp, 8sp, and 4cp towards the house/workshop, and payment to Alphonse and spire, Jozhur is left with about 326gp. He would then like to spend 175gp on masterwork studded leather armor. He sells his leather armor at 62% of value (6gp).

Jozhur gives Alphonse 10gp and Spire 40gp to cover part of what was extorted by the thugs. "I'm glad the two of you paid them, I sure wasn't going to."

Spire spends a good chunk of his time locked in his room, pouring over his spellbook. His room is fairly simple, with his bed shoved in a corner and the door heavily bolted. There is a small window on the wall opposite the door that he can be seen looking out of occasionally, lost in his own thoughts. He gladly accepts the money Jozhr gives him, and thanks him for it.

Spire also visits Goodie Bess (Swim 19) when the others go, simply out of curiosity. He talks to the old woman for a bit about various arcane magicks before returning, planning on going back in the future.

Very happy at the news that the bulding is done ahead of schedule, Dilantar moves his new things into his freshly made room. At his request, his room has no windows, and has a single bed in the corner, that looks comfortable, but not overly so. His room is mostly taken up by his table, which contains his alchemical regeants, and his new chalkboard, which have various formulas written on them. Also, a rather large chest is under his table, and has a good lock on it, in which he keeps his valuables when not carrying them. He wears the key on some twine around his neck under his shirt. Taking a day that he thought would be spent building, Dilantar brews up a few potions of Cure Light Wounds(3, 75gp cost for the materials), which takes roughly 6 hours. Writing down a list of potions that he can make, and handing it to Lansel, should anyone come by while he is out and about running various errands and want a potion he is able to create, and also lists off a few prices for them.(Dilantar will sell potions at 75% market value, he isn't really in it for the money, as long as he makes enough to continue to fund his research)

[OOC to Walter: I really hate to see you go. PLEASE talk to Jerry about other options in other Wold games.]

[OOC: The price for the buildings is 10 gp per square foot, but the work you are doing reduces that by 10 percent on the total -- especially after Brother Engev offers healing when they have injuries in the future. They also throw in two iron-bound solid wood doors and wooden bars on the windows, plus a simple door for every room.]

[OOC: Rum is five days away safe sailing. You can cut that to two if you are willing to risk the Hullscraper Route. Passage might set you back 1 gold each, or 100 gold each, depending on the captain and the ship.]

[OOC: If you go shopping, no problem, but you may want to make a Diplomacy check to represent haggling. If you are at all Diplomatic.]

Alphonse, some of your purchases are fine, but the dogs cost double. The light detectors are not available, unless you can craft them yourself. The scrolls are all available, at a 10 percent over book mark-up, and Brother Lansel, if you tell him about it, thinks you are very lucky to have found them. Goodie Bess is pleased to give you a few pointers for potion making.

Goodie Bess is pleased to see Jozhur as well as Dilantar, Spire, and Alphonse. She offers some of her special cat-tail soup. You are not sure if it is made of the plant or the animal. She says she is doing well, thanks. Later, Jozhur goes shopping, and gets his armor at only 10 percent over book-price.

Dilantar continues his researches.

[OOC to all magic shop sellers: To simulate commerce at your magic shop, please make a spellcraft roll and a diplomacy roll for each week you spend doing business.

[OOC: DM Tanner tells me all your PC sheets are set -- many thanks! Module update ... Jerry has given us some feedback and we are working super fast to get it approved. Tomorrow may be the first post of the new module, and thank you all very much for your patience.]

Sorry, I should have been more specific; I'm crafting the scrolls, not buying them, it just costs materials to make them, which you said Engev had for sale.

Double for the dogs is fine, and no light detectors is fine too.

Spellcraft of 21, and a nat 20! on Diplomacy for this week's sales.

Spells prepared for next scene: Mage Armor, Shield, Unseen Servant, Comprehend Languages. Cantrips: Acid Splash(C), Mage Hand, Light, Prestidigitation, Detect Magic.

Didn't realize how expensive traps were, 333gp cost for a CR1 trap. It will be awhile before I can make anything very useful.

ooc to Jozhur: yeah, I don't know who wrote the rules for trap costs, but they're without a doubt the worst thing about Dnd/pathfinder. I mean, it would cost you a minimum of 250 gold to make a punji pit out of wood and dirt. That's absolutely ludicrous. A simple snare might end up costing 500 gold. That's 500 times more than the average peasant makes in an entire year. Conversely a magical trap (which seems to me like it should be more expensive) can cost as little as 50 gold.
