Rowhouses --- Jim C
Thursday March 22nd, 2012 6:05:30 PM

The group sets off for the address given to them by Ed. Once it's learned that it's another one of a set of rowhouses much like most in Hook City, Zeoll goes to work. First he observes the birds and see's a falcon kill a pigeon in midair and carry it off. With that tidbit of info, he takes Beltrin and Yondrim with him as he goes door to door asking about the inhabitant of the address they were given. All he finds out after three hours is that the lady that lives there is very quiet, never bothers anyone and never has any callers. As the hours pass by during his interviews, nothing happens on the lane in question as the rest of the group stake it out. Smoke from nearby chimneys puff here and there--probably getting ready to cook the evening meal, or in the case of Halflings, supper, which is just two hours before dinner.

Zeoll returns to share his findings, which are meager, and the lane remains quiet except for a few travelers who do not stop at any of the doors along the lane.

"Well, we could stake it out, but if their neighbors say they're quiet and rarely have visitors it's unlikely we'll learn much in a few hours. Who's for just knocking and asking some questions?"

"I'm not surprized that nothing's occured in three hours. A good stakeout is no less than 24 hours, and a bag of donuts," Alexi quips.

"Interesting to know that a lady lives here. Yet I was under the impression that the one that left the address with Ed was not a lady. If no one has seen anyone but a lady here, yet someone else is handing out this address nilly-willy, then the address is a decoy, or something is fishy about this lady."

Well, Zeoll is not convinced that knocking on the door is the best answer, and usually he is in favor of being the one to knock, but since he is flying and invisible, he figures he has an opportunity.

So no dilly dallying!

If someone else goes to knock on the door, Zeoll will fly up to peek in the windows. He also keeps back enough so he can keep the door in sight and see who answers it.

Looking up the chimney, Beltrin see's nothing unusual. Restlin looks about the downstairs and can't seem to find anything in the mess that piques his attention. All the while Bosk climbs up to the edge of the roof, the steep pitch up to the chimney looks very perilous and with all his weight, the clay shingles could break very easily--sending him falling to his death, or at least in a lot of pain. The upstairs still remains unsearched.

Checking the upstairs, and totally not trying to be stealthy about it, Beri and the rest find that there are two bedrooms and a bathroom. Both bedrooms have been trashed, but the bathroom is fairly untouched. Paintings have been taken off the walls and all have been scraped to reveal the canvas below--some have even been cut.

In the bathroom, a small dish sits near the commode. In it are twelve beads, all nearly identical to the bed found in Heather Brody's house. A black thread, snapped in half, sits on top.

I think that we should all go together to the auction. Alexi's note is a good start, perhaps we can find a runner as well."

"...when the storage unit is opened, you have 5 minutes to inspect the contents. You cannot go into the unit; you cannot touch anything in the unit and there is no spellcasting alllowed on the storage grounds. If you are caught spellcasting or using a magic item, you will be escorted off the premises by security. Gold is king, chits work too, highest bidder wins it all!" The auctioneer then motions to one of the guards, of which there are three, to open the gates. The group along with about 30 other bidders enter the grounds and go to the first row of storage units--it is not unit 13a. A red lock and wire is wrapped around the locking clasp. The wire is cut and the lock is removed with a master key. When the door is opened upwards, it reveals a plethora of household goods and boxes. This unit and the several after it are all pretty much the same--the lives of people on a downward spiral that couldn't even afford to keep their common items from being taken from them.

When unit 13a is opened, it's contents viewable from the outside look to be: a bed and frame; dresser drawer; chest drawer; 5 chairs and a dining table; two chests; several boxes and more in the back under sheets that cannot be determined at this time. Bidding starts at 100gp and rapidly rises to 400gp and falters, with the highest bid so far going to a man wearing all black clothing. "Do I hear 450gp?"

Bosk has enough cash to front the money. We can decide via email if the group wants to split the cost, reimburse the cost when we next get loot, or if Bosk is the sole owner of whatever he just bought.

The taur opens up his massive hand and reveals a small pile of brightly colored chits. Let's see, an orange (1500gp), two red (500gp each) and two white chits (100 gp each) should cover it. So what is the process, can I go through the stuff now, and do I need to hire someone to bring this back to my tower, or can you deliver it for me later?

The Lady --- Jim C
Wednesday April 11th, 2012 1:26:08 PM

The Lady carefully checks the chits to see if they're counterfeit. When satisfied, she gives Bosk as receipt. "New at this eh? Well, the way we handle it is thusly. First, you have 24 hours to decide what to do with the contents of that unit. You can take it out now, or later, but it'll be unlocked unless you lock it yourself. If you don't have a lock, they sell them for the normal price up at the front office. After 24 hours you have the option of renting out the unit or making sure it's empty and unlocked. If it's still locked after 24 hours and you haven't rented it out for the month, which is 50gp a month, then your lock is cut off and everything is thrown out. 24 hours starts now and the time has been recorded on your receipt. They do not deliver anything, they just rent out the unit, it's your responsibilty to take care of the contents. Any questions?"

The Man in Black --- Jim C

The man in black doesn't seem to react to the name of Lowd, "Get yer ass out of the way, horsey." The man's hand strays to his sword. You think perhaps with what little room you've given him, he doesn't want to squeeze by you or get close to your posterior where you may kick him.

Unit 13a--- Jim C
Wednesday April 11th, 2012 1:34:52 PM

Tightly packed, Beri manages to start looking through some of the items, but it'll require them to be pulled out and spread out on the stone floor to be inspected--which is what others have done after winning their units. In his cursory scan, it looks like these items are used, but not badly so--perhaps they were replaced by the nicer items in her house.

Working towards the back, Beri pulls loose the bedsheet covering some paintings. They don't look like they're rare or anything (need an appraise check), but one painting stands out. It is of a woman holding a baby while sitting in front of two men. Behind them is an inn, it's name unreadable in this light. Beri slowly comes to recognize the woman as Heather Brody--perhaps 20 years younger.

Alexi is not worried about getting lost. Somehow, by asking enough people, he can find his way back. What does concern him is the lack of concern for the nature of this MIB by his friends, so focused on the items they just bought.

Alexi lets out a muted growl when he realizes he's lost track of the man in black. Had he not taken the time to become invisible, this would not have happened. But then he risked being seen. If he was visible, he could easily ask someone on the street if they noticed the MIB, but to do so invisibly would be awkward, if not frightening to the inquiree.

So Alexi is faced with a dilema. Wich way to go? The odds are that any one way is only a 33% chance of being the right way. Any calculations after that are meaningless. However he hadn't seen him ahead so he most likely took a left or right, making his next choice only a 50% chance hit or miss.

Alexi quickly decides to take a left at the intersection. At the next one he tries to outhink his quarry. If his first choice was correct, going straight would be wrong as he still does not see the MIB. So he's still left with a 50% or correctly guessing which way to turn. Taking a Left, then a Right, might be a logical way of outfoxing a trailer, however if the trailee was heading away from his destination and desired to reach it quickly to give his master the news of the sale, then he'd turn left again.

So Alexi turns Left.

By the time Alexi reaches the next intersection he still does not see his quarry so he must have turned again. Of course, the MIB could have ducked into a shop anywhere along the way. This he'd have to find out by retracing his path once the Invisibility potion wears off. But for now, again, he is faced with a Left or Right direction. He'd like to toss a chit, but if people saw a chit suddenly appear out of thin air there's no telling what chaos would insue.

This is a mind game, with a little luck. However, a candle light suddenly appears above his head, causing some excited comments from passerby's. He's not seen up ahead so that rules out going straight. If he turns left again, then he's right back near the street they were on before and could be spotted by any of the other members trying to catch up with Alexi. So the only other logical path open is to the right.

Alexi turns Right.

It's possible he'll come to us. We'll want to keep a watch these next few days. The next logical target would be us."

Recollecting what he knows, Zeoll believes the inn in question is just outside the city limits of Heranmar and has been there for some fifty years. Not a posh place to rest for the night, but neither a dive.

Alexi on the otherhand has no luck with tracking down the Man in Black. If he was following him back, he would never know.

Meanwhile the rest of the group waits patiently for Alexi's return. It has been almost half an hour.

Restlin taps his foot impatiently while waiting for Alexi's return. "I haven't been out of the city much, to be honest; however, even I know the plains are no place for an idle stroll. Maybe we should look into securing passage down at the docks."

...is that guy off in the distance Alexi? I wonder where he's been.

"Geography around here are more like the wind and water than stone, but I think we could get passage to Heranmar easily enough. But what Beri says may be true, if our competitor was the assassin, he may come after us next. I think we should retire for the evening. Our next logical destination is the inn at Heranmar, but our plans may be way-laid before then."

OOC - XP Notes from Cayzle

Here is a recap of xp awards so far this module:
24 Feb 12
Death of Heather B - part 1
1,430

17 Mar 12
Death of Heather B - part 2
1,500

19 Apr 12
Death of Heather B - part 3
1,450

Because I am an idiot who did not do the math at the time, although Zeoll actually leveled to 7th on March 12, I only just now noticed. :-) I have now leveled him up, and his PC sheet is almost up to date, except for loot adjustments for this module. To whom do I owe some auction cash, and how much?

Idiot that I am, I also note that my current hp total max, listed in my header as 35, is two levels out of date! It should have been 38 two levels ago, and 44 until today! Now, adding a d6 (roll in this post) ... a 3 ... Zeoll's new hp max should be 49!

Also, I vote a hero point to Alexi for chasing the man in black.

I will be out of town from Saturday to the end of the month. I have an alternate arranged to post for me.
