Pen's Office Tuesday April 3rd, 2012 9:17:49 AM
Ellie discovers the flute is a Pipe of the Sewers. The Mace still eludes the group.
Pen continues writing and his son enters to deposit severl ledgers on the table next to him and then exits.
The group heads to the tavern to clean up relax and decide what to do next.
Insert the needles and head into the Catacombs to sell, buy and or identify any of the items and treasure found so far? Head to the lift and descend to the jungle with the supplies given by Pen? Look to see if Risca or Haggard would be willing to assist? Something completely different?
(Ezra, the Second) Yngvar Hefnd AC 14/14/12 -- CMD 12 -- HP 15/16 Tuesday April 3rd, 2012 11:40:03 AM
Yngvar turns the pipes over and looks at the others, "I don't expect us to be traveling through sewers all that much, sell it?" He pulls the muleback cords off the pile and holds them out to the bull, "If ye are willing, these will reinforce your arms and allow you to carry the entire tree."
"The mace may be of use yet, we can just leave it here and study it some more, I have a few ideas for discerning it's true nature. Does anyone have anything they believe is of dire need, or shall we press on?"
(Sean) Toregan Dondarin AC 17/14/13 -- CMD 18 -- HP 8/14 Tuesday April 3rd, 2012 11:45:54 AM (The campfire bead and the muleback straps will be useful here, but I'm not so sure about the pipes. The mace is as of yet unidentified and could or could not be useful. We could always have someone hit a volunteer party member with it see if it has any special effects. We frustrated our DM with that one in my home group.
With the 10% markoff for selling items to catacombs, selling the pipes would get us 517.5gp. Combine that with the loot we already have 12gp, 22sp, 7cp, we would then have 529gp 27sp and 7 cp. Split between 5 people (RobC being our DM at the time, not a player, Sorry Rob!) would give each of us 105gp 5sp and 1cp each with 4gp 2sp and 2cp leftover. Once we figure out what the mace does, I'll update the numbers.
Also, when it was said that there were TWO leather cords, is that one or two muleback straps?
Toregan finishes packing his new bag and leaves the tavern with his twisted bow. "I'll be back later. I need to find someone to repair this." Toregan goes to find Patterson, hoping that the ingenious halfling can do something to fix his bow.

The Muleback Cords I would keep for the moment as well as the Campfire Bead, which is why I didn't include those. "Over there is Leragris" Ellie points out to the rest of the party as they walk towards the store "She runs the general store here. Anything non-magical you need to buy, that's the place to do it"

"Good day to you all. Leragris, owner and proprieter of the General Store. A pleasure to make your aquaintances." The woman is long and thin, if a strong wind came up you might think she would blow away. She invites the group into the store and you find that it is well supplied with dried foodstuffs and equipment for forays into the jungle. A scale on the counter and some appraisal equipment lies on the counter and Leragris does say she will purchase nearly any non magical things the party comes across. "From dinosaur teeth and scales, to wild and exotic roots and wood." She pauses and then leans in closer. "And of course gold ore."
Toregan heads into the chapel and does indeed find Patterson. The old halfling is sitting under a great stained glass window, wrapped in a blanket and sipping some hot beverage. Still feeling under the weather Patterson forces a smile to Toregan "Well it looks as though I'm not done yet." Patterson looks over the twisted bow and his face falls. The group is at the inn, Meranus ready to head out immediately and Ellie asking Rexxan about the rumors passing about the post about Anna. Is there truth to the stories of a possible budding romance. In a such a small area with only about 20 people, word and actions spread quickly. Meranus has also begun work on a new diggerdoo (sp?). He leaves his old bow and arrows in his room, and takes one of the light crossbows offered by Pen, as well as some bolts. "I'm ready to go. If everyone else is prepared as well, we can get started."
(Luckily Toregan can still use his current feats with a crossbow, Its just not as effective. Also, Toregan took the 4 pulleys, the 2 block and tackle sets, 200ft of rope, 20 bolts and one of the MW light crossbows. Since they can all fit inside his haversack, he can carry them with no penalty. Also, asked on the Rules Board but they said to ask you Dan. Ellie is startled by the great winged dinosaur hurtling past her and while still holding onto a guide rope she starts to lean out to visually locate the thing
Toregan cursing as he loads his crossbow, something he should have done before warns the group that the other may attack from above.
Meranus remains ready
Ellie finds herself leaning further and further to get an eye on the creature, before she does so. About 200' below the lift it levels out its dive and speeds straight out over the tree tops and away from the mesa
The other drifts on the thermals and seems to be maintaining its position of 300-350 feet up
The third dinosaur appears out of nowhere having plunged from the sky in an arc kept the sun directly behind it. At the last moment Toregan spots it and fires, his bolt striking. Meranus is also able to strike the creature. The living missile hurls by the edge of the platform snapping for the leaning Ellie [Hit AC 7] The great beak filled with hundreds of needle-like teeth miss by a wide margin and the dinosaur continues speeding towards the valley floor to follow the first over the trees

Ellie instinctively ducks as the third bird passes her by. "Can't this lift go any faster?" she looks about, frustrated at the lack of places to hide. She moves away from the edge and kneels down next to Rishka, using the prone big cat for cover.

The two birds below the lift continue out over the jungle, but are bearting thier great wings and banking back. It looks like while these dinosaurs can come down in a hurry, gaining altitude and turning are not thier strong suits. They are currently about 100' below the lift and 150' away to the left over the jungle.
The dinosaur still above the lift makes a slight turn to take it in a path away from the directly overhead and drops in altitude about 100'. This still leaves him over 200' away. He screeches loudly several times looking back at the lift
The lift continues it's descent, at too slow a pace for Ellie, who inquires about speed control. As she takes cover by her other worldly cat, who questions her motives. The rest, Meranus,Toregan and Rexxann, reload and ready for the next pass.
The lift is now 300' from the jungle floor

The group readies, Toregan calling out the distances to the dinosaurs below and over the jungle. No one decides to take a shot at them. Meranus chastises the other a bit for thier use of such things in the first.
The tow dinosaurs over the jungle contiue out ward, but are slowly turning and gaining some alttitude. They have completed a 135 degree turn and climbed a little. They are currently about 90' below the lift and 170' away to the left over the jungle and still banking back.
The dinosaur circling above dips and folds his wings into a power dive coming back at the lift at about a 30 degree angle. Streaking form the sky, rockets past one of the outer corners at a , coming within only a foot or so. Bolts and horns fly. As it shoots past it snaps at the corner tie, severing the rope nearly in two and causing the lift to rotate some. The single dinosaur is 70 past the lift and slightly down

The minotaur spends a few moments in thought. [b]"The only safe way is to leave me in the jungle when you return. I weigh a bit over a ton myself, so the lift will hold all of you. Yngvar has been busy clearing low lying foilage from around the base of the lift, stacking it between trees to form a simple wall. While it wouldn't be anything more than an annoyance to large creatures or intelligent ones, it would provide some warning and deterence.
Once the first tree is felled, Yngvar will start working on cutting stakes from the branches cleared from the trunk.

If the lift can't hold the weight of the tree and everyone else, we'll just cut the tree into section that can be lifted up. I doubt we were going to be able to fit a whole tree on the lift anyways. Besides, if those "birds" are still around they might try and go for the lift again, and they would only need to hit it once more to destroy it. Best choice is to send a small group up with the wood and use the rope to tie them to the supports of the lift so that even if the rope gives they don't fall to their deaths. Of course if Yngvar has a Mending prepared, that would solve the rope problem."

Yngvar begins clearing the area around the lift and to the tree for a good drag route. The work is hard as nearly everything he tries to pull or grab is living with roots and vines about it. He does make some progress however.
Rexaan keeps watch, though the stinging and biting insects distract her greatly
Toregan and Meranus begin the 'obvious logic' of Meranus remaining behind as the wood is taken topside
The lift has been damaged, can it be repaired? Does it Need to be and how much can it safely hold? The platform is certanly large enough at nearly 30x30.
Soon enough the tree falls with a resounding crash of splintering branches and tearing foliage. The work of segmenting it into sections the group can move now begins. The work is completed and the party now has a massive pile of branches from as thick at Meranus' arms and smaller. The main trunk lies in multiple sections and if the party would like they could certainly keep going to clean off and prepare more of the tree
DM has halted work at the main trunk and the lowest branches. Consider the trunk quartered and halved in length creating 8 logs of approximately 10' long and 3' in diameter The party also has about 50 2' long 6" diameter logs from the branches. This constitutes about 50% of the possible wood and your original target goal You can of course continue
(Ezra, the Second) Yngvar Hefnd AC 14/14/12 -- CMD 12 -- HP 15/16 Thursday April 26th, 2012 2:13:49 PM
While the fallen tree is being prepared for travel, Yngvar will be busy working on adding some stops to the platform to keep the logs from shifting. In addition, he will work on adding some protection to the lift. He adds posts in the four corners, and a framework of beams about 12' high above the platform. It's not solid, but it should be enough to deter the fliers from getting too close. Especially with the sharpened stakes placed along the ridge lines.

Toregan starts to load some of the smaller logs onto the lift, and helps anyone who is moving the large logs. He uses the rope to bundle up the logs so that they are easier to manage on the lift. After loading up the logs he sits down by the lift to catch his breath, more used to the far less backbreaking work of tanning and stitching animal hides. "So how should we do this? We could try to bring this all up as one load and come back for the rest, bring up what we have in multiple loads and either keep chopping or leave the rest of the tree." Toregan glances at the mass of the tree that still remains. "We should probably not leave the tree uncollected for long. It'd probably start to rot and make it useless after a few days, so I'm for collecting the entire tree. I also say that until the rope is fixed we should load up the lift with only a portion of the wood we collected and all go up together. The more of us there are the less likely those birds are to try and go after us again."

Torregan and Meranus continue to discuss brining the lumber to the Trading Post and Meranus calls up the side of the mesa. A few minutes pass without answer, likely there is no one near the lift or the distance perhaps was too great even for the minotaurs booming voice. Yngvar sets himself to somehow creating some stops to prevent the logs from shifting, but without nails or glue or something along those lines, perhaps magic, there is no real way to do so to the platform. A similar issue exists wth attaching any beams that might be crafted from the lumber to the guide ropes. Converstation continues about the weight capacity of the lift and Ellie reminds the group of the magical tie the lift has. Perhaps the ropes are magically strentghed for lifting....

(as seen in this attachment, top left and right: https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1iwUKxSvHLCUgS9MgebbkZQB5Ygrx3uyDzxP6LSb2ukY/edit The bottom right shows how a couple of pieces of rough cut planks could be used to create a no-nails holder to keep the lumber from shifting. While the image shows something like 2X4's, any shape would would be fine, and using rope to tie the top and bottom pieces on each side would keep any rough handling from upsetting the contraption (the green circles represent the ends of logs) If the Amish can build without nails... unintelligent wild animals don't need much of a barrier to keep them out of an area (not that in the US, a 6'-8' fence that is inclined in will keep animals that can clear a 10' jump from attempting the jump because when the animal walks up to teh fence, they see the fence over their head from the incline. /ooc
Yngvar sighs, though not in any surprise that they could go more than a couple of hours without SOMETHING trying to eat them. Neither Yngvar nor Nipper sees the second raptor as Yngvar follows Ellie's example and casts mage armor on himself.

Raptors Round 2 Tuesday May 1st, 2012 9:40:47 PM
Meranus moves at the Raptor, but misses with his horns. Torregan spins and fires, but his quick shot sails high Ellie sicks her otherworldly cat Rishka the it lands several viscious cuts into the raptor. Ellie casts Mage Armor as does Yngvar.
The Raptor has already had enough and withdraws into the the deeper jungle. Meranus gets an AoO as it leaves
The jungle is quiet, very quiet.
That makes sense to me on the lift. I just wasn't getting it :)

Rishka looks to Ellie for permission to pursue the fleeing beast, but Ellie only shakes her head. The cat takes a lingering look towards the jungle before returning to Ellie's side. "We should load the wood on to the lift quickly before that critter attracts even bigger things here"

Meranus snorts, "Animals." He picks his axe back up and returns to work
(Ezra, the Second) Yngvar Hefnd AC 14/14/12 -- CMD 12 -- HP 15/16 Wednesday May 2nd, 2012 5:39:40 PM
tngvar makes note of which route the raptor took to leave the clearing. "Anyone see which way it came from? I understand they are territorial. If we, or anyone else, is going to be using this left at all, we should consider beefing up the defense here at the bottom.
And, since we forgot to ask the lift capacity, we should probably only take a light load up first."
(OOC: More on lifts, while having four ropes going all the way to the top sounds simple, it actually drastically complicates the winch mechanism. Having those four ropes combine above the lift, into a single rope cable of four strands, would actually be stronger, and only need one winch at the top instead of 4. That would also probably need some sort of frame work that keeps the ropes separated until high enough to clear everyone standing (think mine elevator).
(Sean) Toregan Dondarin AC 17/14/13 -- CMD 18 -- HP 8/14 d20+6=19 ; d20+7=22 ; Wednesday May 2nd, 2012 7:15:46 PM
Toregan reloads his crossbow and moves to pick up more wood, keeping a wary eye on the woods. "I agree. A half ton load with everyone on it should be a good test. I doubt that Pen would have sent us to collect a ton if the lift wasn't capable of holding us and the wood, but the that frayed rope, we should take it easy. I have to say, I prefer the flying raptors that we can see to these ones that we can't." Once the wood is loaded, Toregan will take out his crossbow again and ready to shoot at anything threatening that gets within a decent firing range.
Reload crossbow Load wood onto lift Perception (+6): 19 Ready action to fire at anything within 240ft (within 3 range increments of my crossbow. No larger than a -4 penalty) Attack (+7): 22 (24 if beast, -2 for every range increment after first)
Just writing it out to make sure. 0-80ft = -0 81-160ft = -2 161-240ft = -4
Get a load up Wednesday May 2nd, 2012 10:11:53 PM
Ellie keeps Rishka from pursuing the wounded raptor into the dense jungle. Rarely has she heard of a single raptor. With the raptor gone, Meranus gets back to work. Yngvar is a bit concerned that the bottom of the lift area, the main supply chain to the mesa, could be within the claimed territory of that particular raptor. A problem that would need to be dealt with if it is. There is also the rather disturbing evidence of how stealthy those things are. Torregan retrieves and reloads his crossbow before resuming loading wood to the lift.
The lift is loaded with half of what the group has cut up, which is what Torregan feels they should all ride up with.
DM is looking for a quick consensus and Ezra is correct on the lift. it makes sense to have four rope come straight up and join into a single entwined rope that goes all the way to the top. That said there would be some sort of upper frame to make that possible. To be honest I did not give the lift so much thought that way. :) For now we will say a crude barrier is up about the upper frame where the ropes come together.
Also i received an email from Bruno, aka Rexxan, he is stepping out. I am going to ask him that I put Rexxan on temporary leave for a while in hopes he changes his mind. Additional encouragement to his email would only help in that manner.

Who knows, we may even be able to scout out the local area while the lift rises" Ellie steps aboard the lift, then looks to Meranus "You coming, big fella?"
