DM - JC ------- The Door, but no Door knocker ---------

It takes about an hour for everyone to reach the top, either by levitation, flight or tieing themselves off to those who can carry them.
The top is a tight narrow winding twisting path that eventually comes out behind a very large shale rock formation. The group exits into bright sunlight, about a mile and a half higher up the mountain than where they went in. There is a path that leads upwards, it's not very clearly marked, but the remains of it can be seen, Thar follows it easily, leading the rest upwards even further.

OOC: 5500 xp for each, nice way to avoid the climbing challenge.

There is a cave again, but the group is now easily 2.5 to 3 miles up the face of Shadow Mountain now, the cave is only 15 feet or so deep, it ends abruptly with a very solid door, it's either locked or it's extremely stuck. The Door is made of worked iron, with bandings of more iron riveting together.

"If noone wants to pick it, I could summon something to break it down if you like? Or I could go ethereal and have a peek on what's on the other side first?" Lia offers. She scratches a little nervously at her elbow. It doesn't feel the same without her eidolon around "But let me check for anything magical warding it before anyone touches it"

She keeps her eyes and ears open, looking for clues as to what may have travelled this way, any indications as to what may be on the other side, and using arcane sight, anything magical in the immediate area. (Perception: 47. Nat 20, and possibly my highest ever perception roll)

If they find nothing, then he steps back and says, "I'm not an expert at disabling these things, but I can at least find traps or related problems... Who wants to open it?"

Taking an hour for everyone to get to the top, the Alter Self and Reduce Person spells expire. Tishe' looks around to make sure that Caedmon and Snafu can fit at the top being as big as they are. If not, it is easy as Reduce Person again to cause the two taurs to be Medium sized.

The witch has nothing to help with opening a door, but cautions Lia from going etheral immediately. "How many times can you do that, and would you be able to quickly get back here in case of trouble?"

No traps are located, it really appears very tightly wedged in, even though there is a spot to insert a large key into the door.
Nudging and pushing on the iron door reviles that the Iron Door is very solid indeed.

"I'll be ok" Lia responds to Tishe with a grin "I'll just take a peek on the other side to make sure its safe before we make any commotion in knocking it down"

Lia will stand by the door and cast Ethereal Jaunt. Once in effect, she will lean forwards to poke her head through the door to see what is on the other side, but if possible, keeping the remainder of her body on this, the "safe" side of the door.

Thar waits patiently while Lia inspects the other side of the door, hoping that she's safe in this risky maneuver. He looks over at Caedmon and other burly types and says, "If we pool our strength, we should be able to open this up using brute force, unless anyone's skilled at picking locks. My skills are more towards nature and healing, not thievery."

Tishe' then looks at the map once more, trying to see if TWO _,I,_,_,E,S could possibly talk of a lock or key. She finally shakes her head. They are going to have to go through the door the hard way...

Tishe' stands back and lets the others set up how to get through the door.

you can get two people side by side if not large and then 1 large person aiding from behind them, just so you can figure out who helps who.

With only one person pushing against it, you couldn't tell if it moved, it seemed really solid, but a small amount of dust/rust escaped from the top.

Revi asks for some help, but before any offers, she throws her shoulder against the door, with a screeching that would wake the dead the door slowly opens up to revile a a carved and worked hallway that leads slightly uphill, as if to allow stuff to "drain" out of the doorway. It leads in about 50 feet and then opens wider than the hallway itself. There is no light from the inside, just what is coming in through the now open doorway.

ooc: we have a few gold mines around here, one in Hatcher Pass about 20 miles north of me and was as described above--ice in the middle of summer at the mine exit.

Pulling her Staff of Fire from her Efficient Quiver, Tishe' casts Light upon the tip, allowing the group to see shadowy light for forty feet.

As Caedmon and Snafu are both 'medium' sized from Tishe's spell, the witch thinks that maybe they can walk two abreast? Revi, Caedmon, Snafu, Lia, Tishe', Thar.

Shortly after the door is forced open by Revi, a wave of stench rolls out the now open entrance. (it stinks greatly)

There are water and waste tracks leading from the room or rooms above to the door, behind it is some waste, but it looks to be two or three months old, not fresh.

Lia nods at Tishe's suggestion to walk two-by-two, and falls in line next to Snafu. Seeing past Revi and Caedmon will be difficult, but at least she is shielded.

The smell is indeed strong. Fearing disease, Lia takes a moment to take a small scarf from her pack and ties it around her head, covering her nose and mouth like a bandana. "Its been some time since I wore one of these" she says with a hidden smile. She walks as carefully and as quietly as she can with the group.

(OOC - OK, I'm a little confused... Is Thar at point like he posted or do you want him guarding the rear? He was scouting but then Tishe' put him in the rear... He's more skilled at scouting ahead and with his elven vision, he's good at looking for threats (+26 Perc)... I'd prefer him up front but I'll go with what the group wants...)

After the slight climb up to the main room, well it appears to be a main room at least, the group discovers an area that had been well used. It hadn't been a mine in years, but something or someone had lived here. All around the walls are sconces that supported torches. You can tell that due to the carbonized areas on the walls where the torches burned. There are 6 big wooden beams going from the floor to the ceiling. There is also the remnants of a large fire near the middle. There is one other door leading out of the room, it is barely hanging on to the hinges, which are mostly bent. As the group nears the door, the stench gets worse, if that's possible....

OOC: Thar can take my place if he likes. I am a ranged combatant and can still get full attacks even from the rear of the party. Also with 120ft base land speed I can get to the front quickly if need be.

Lia is alert for danger. She looks at the ceiling for some sort of chimney. Had a fire been lit here, it makes sense that there would have been a way for the smoke to exit. She will nudge the ash and the remains of the fire with her foot - was this a campfire, or was someone trying to dispose of something? Assuming nothing of interest is found, she follows behind Revi and Thar

Tishe' doesn't like the smell. She is also confident that, although this is a trap, the group will be able to bust it out from the insides!

The witch follows 10 feet behind Revi as they move towards the fire, and Readies a Scorching Ray spell against any monster that rushes out of the opposing door.

That swaps places with Caedmon and when he smells the rank odor, he pauses, trying to identify it... Is it rotted food, the scent of unwashed bodies or a corpse or undead creature like a zombie... (Not sure what to roll on this... Nature?14)

He also takes a further look at the room's interior and walls, making sure that there aren't any traps they've missed... Perc = 30

IF everything checks out, he moves to where he can get a glimpse of what lies beyond the door... If it's too dark, he takes out a sun rod and tosses it in that direction...

Nothing is heard and nothing seems to come rushing out at the group either. There are some small piles of junk and garbage in various piles about the room.
Caedmon, during his searching about he discovers a well worn hatchet/axe.
Lia digging about in the fire pit (there is no chimney by the way, whomever lived here wasn't very smart) locates another hand axe , that while covered in ash, seems not to be damaged by any fire that had burnt in the pit since it was put there.
Thar decides that the stench is from defecating "people", rotted food and just general uncleanliness.

15 minutes have passed since the door was opened.

Lia pickups up the handaxe, and holds it between her thumb and forefinger - as if she doesn't want to get any germs from it. She does a quick examination of it (Arcane Sight to detect magic. Spellcraft to ID if magical: 29) before offering it to the party "Anyone want an axe?"

"Let's try and wrap this up. The smell here is awful. We'll probably get a disease just from looking at things"

With a close look at the axe she is holding, Lia does in deed discover that it is magical. With a closer inspection, it is a +1 axe. It's crude looking, but it is serviceable enough.

Moving carefully, Thar gets to the point where he can look into the first room, it turns out to be a 20 x 20 room that has been used as a den or sleeping quarters. If anything it's even filthier than the big main room, with heaps of skins and blankets strewn about in piles for sleeping.
Further down at the end of the hallway past where it opened up, a well built door can be seen, there is something metal attached to the door, but it's too far away to make it out.

Caedmon searches the north rooms, another searches the south rooms. Combined they find 500 sp and 225 gp. Caedmon also finds a small hidden cubbyhole, inside it he finds a Heavy Crossbow.
No one but the group seems to be anywhere in this smallish complex. The Heavy door at the end of the hallway has a small 15 square foot area in front of it.
The door is of very hefty, dense wood, stained with age and what was probably along time ago was blood. There are words and pictures drawn on it with charcoal, probably from sticks used for a came fire. Also, there is a bronze plate riveted to the door with words inscribed into it. There seems not to be a handle or latch on the door to open it.

Careful examination of the area around the door, reveals that if pushed, one of the edge stones should open the door, or at least unlatch it. Searching of the floor, shows that the door was opened the for last time somewhere about a month ago.
There is no magic to be seen on the door or about the door.
You now have the choice of opening the door, or returning back through the filthy warren this well crafted place has become.

Thar presses the stone that he determined was the door latch, there's a loud "click" and the door swings open. Beyond the door is an are 10 x 20 feet and then there's runes carved into the floor, forming a grid. The overall size of the room is 20 wide by 50 deep.

As Lia's magical abilities fade from her, she lets forth a quiet curse riddled rant that roughly translates as "may the inbred person who made this room lay with a diseased goblin and wake to find an appendage missing".

"Ok, so my magical abilities have been surpressed. I won't be able to cast anything while we're in here"

The symbols on the floor look very similar to those on the map. Distracting herself from both her missing abilities and eidolon, she tries to reconcile the symbols with their known values.

She takes some paper from a pocket, and start scribbling some notes. When done, she shows the rest of the party "What do you think? It also takes into account what I thought was an accidental misspelling of the word "safety", though that would now seem deliberate"

OCC: Anyone know where Snafu went to? or was he going on leave?

ok, here's what the DC breaks down to. Each tile is small, declaring a base of DC 8, there is small pieces of stone (gravel) that's +1, and each tile moves down about a 1/2 inch and it rocks side to side and forward and back that's a +1 so a DC 10 Acrobatics roll is needed for each 8 steps following the letter pattern to get across the room, that's 4 acrobatics checks as a DC 10. If you fail one I will inform you of the results.

The first time Revi touches the first step the door behind the group, leading out to the dirty living area, slams shut tight. Also Revi can feel a click as the tile reaches the bottom of it's movement.

As Revi takes each successive step, the sound of the clicks gets louder and louder. As she passes half way there is suddenly a build up of static electricity. The hair on everyone begins to lift it's self up away from their heads, it can only be moments before something triggers the built up charge.
Revi catches herself before she puts her foot down with a swirling arm motion to keep her balance. As she reaches the final step, a door right in front of her seems to snap open with a bang and she can then step into a short hallway of only 10 feet before it turns into a spiral stair case down. Further than she can see down....

Thar finally breathes a bit easier as Revi reaches the other end....

He tries to think of an easier way to cross but says, "Well, it let's see if we can anchor the rope above the ground somehow and then someone could crawl across using their hands and feet, and avoid touching the floor? On the other hand, I'm nimble enough that I could use the tiles too and avoid touching the wrong ones... I'll go next..."

WIth that, he'll say a quick prayer, cross himself and then step gently from square to square...

As Tishe` begins to cross the floor, she makes it almost all the way through the second word and mistakenly steps on the "D" rather than the "H". As she does so, those with magical detection sight see the room flare with magic only momentarily. During that flare everyone not on the spiral staircase takes 1% of their hit point maximum in electrical damage. Then as Tishe` corrects her mistake, getting through to the misspelled Safety steps from the "F" she steps on a "Y" by accident. The room once again flashes with magic and everyone takes 2% of their maximum hit points in electrical damage. (now a total of 3% damage)

Tishe`, need 1 more Acrobatics check please (I should have made it more clear, forgive me please)

Everyone else (anyone know where Snafu's player went?) is waiting in the short hallway watching Tishe` make her way across the puzzle.

As everyone gathers on the stair side of the puzzle room they all seem to exhale a somewhat held breath.
Now the question will be, when it's time to leave how does the group get across the room from this side....

At the other end of the short hallway, is the top of a spiral stair case. It can be seen going down about 10 feet before it vanishes out of sight as it circles back around.

Exp award is 29,000 each and Lia gets 1 hero point for taking the time to decipher the puzzle map. (max xp for the puzzle was 30k, you came close to maxing it, gratz)

Thar again takes the lead with Revi and tosses his sun rod down the stairs, aiming at the far wall so that it rebounds and goes down the opposing stairs...

Then, he'll touch Tishe on the shoulder, healing her of some of her damage, saying with a grin, "Let's see if we can fix some of those burns. Next time we have a vacation, maybe consider taking dance or ballet lessons."

Then, he'll go down the steps slowly, staying near the wall. At the bottom, he'll use his mirror to look around the corner to see what lies below... His sun rod should give him illumination...

The stairs go down another 200 feet before they flatten out to a hallway 15 feet long. The door here looks like solid oak, well kept and the hinges are on the inside. The life bar is solid iron and it must pivot or something in the width of the door and it's reinforcements.
The hall is just a little under 10 feet wide and not quite 10 feet high, there is very little dust on the floor, due to looking like it's well used, or was up until recently.

Lia initially recoils from Thar, but accepts the cleric's healing touch "Uh.. thanks" she says in a somewhat confused tone. "They seem to be genuinely good folk" she notes to herself.
